-of Newport is this bridge...

-..the transporter bridge.

-To cross the bridge, you travel

-on a vehicle called a gondola.

-Xanthe and Mam are crossing

-the River Usk in the gondola.

-How exciting.

-The gondola will take us

-across the River Usk.

-A long time ago, iron and coal

-were exported from the docks.

-It's a large river. It's also brown

-because of the mud underneath it.

-I don't want to stand in the mud.

-Animals and birds

-enjoy walking along the riverbank.

-The transporter bridge

-was built in 1906.

-That was a long time ago.

-There's a another bridge in Newport,

-a footbridge.

-Dad worked on the construction

-of the footbridge.

-Dad's a welder.

-He helped weld the metal together.

-He didn't build the transporter

-bridge because he hadn't been born!

-Xanthe's father has been working

-away from home for some time.

-On her big day...

-..Dad will travel all the way home

-to see her and the family.

-Dad's working in Norway

-at the moment.

-I think he works on the ships.

-He comes home for three weeks before

-returning to Norway for five weeks.

-I'm exciting and happy

-because I FaceTimed him...

-..and he showed us

-the presents he'd bought us.

-There were T-shirts and chocolate.

-He also bought me a journal.

-A journal is a diary.

-I'm looking forward to receiving

-the gifts and to seeing Dad.

-When it's sunny, Xanthe and

-her sisters play in the garden.

-They're good friends.

-Layla is five and her favourite

-thing in school is drawing pictures.

-opportunity to practise her karate.

-called tang soo do.

-We do a form of combat

-called point sparring.

-A kick to the head

-A punch to the stomach is one point.

-A half-fist to the head

-is two points.

-This is what I wear -

-it's a karate suit.

-Tang soo do is a Korean martial art.

-This is the suit jacket.

-Dragons Tang Soo Do.

-I like wearing the jacket.

-It's very comfortable.

-These are the trousers.

-A belt.

-We start with a white belt.

-Then yellow, orange,

-then orange and green...

-..then green, then green and red,

-then green with two red stripes...

-..then red, then red and blue,

-then red with two blue stripes...

-..then black,

-then black with a yellow stripe...

-..and then a black belt

-with a red stripe.

-This is the sparring kit.

-Boots.

-A helmet.

-Hand pads.

-They're difficult to wear.

-Wearing the suit and special kit...

-..Xanthe practises

-her sparring moves.

-She does these in class.

-Mam takes her to the dojo,

-the tang soo do studio.

-First,

-they warm up with some high kicks.

-Tang soo do is a special form

-of karate.

-It's not combat that hurts people.

-It's a non-violent form of combat.

-It keeps Xanthe very fit.

-It's time for Xanthe

-to wear the sparring kit...

-..the helmet, the shoes

-and the soft gloves.

-Sparring is practising the moves.

-They wear the kit

-to make sure no-one is hurt.

-My legs feel light.

-I'm going to sleep now - I'm tired!

-Xanthe lives in Newport,

-a large town on the River Usk.

-Xanthe's father lives in Norway.

-Life goes on when he's working away.

-Xanthe practises her tang soo do

-every week...

-..and goes to school every day.

-Today is a special day.

-It's Wednesday today.

-because Dadi returns home today.

-I can't wait to see him

-because he's my dad!

-He's been working away since May.

-12 weeks.

-I think he'll look different.

-Since Dadi's been away,

-I've cut my hair.

-I think he'll like it.

-I'm having presents - a T-shirt

-and a journal, which is a diary.

-and I won't show it to anyone else.

-Mali is my best friend.

-She likes playing tennis

-and doing gymnastics.

-This is Ana.

-She likes doing gymnastics.

-A lot. And singing.

-She also likes dancing.

-She likes the monkey bars.

-We like doing this.

-After a long day at school,

-time to head home on the bus.
