A brutal attack on a 76-year-old woman as she walked | :00:08. | :00:13.
I spun round and when I looked up he had the hammer in his hand. | :00:14. | :00:19.
He hit my shoulder with that and then my head. | :00:20. | :00:21.
The fugitive hunters tracking down criminals wanted abroad. | :00:22. | :00:25.
You're under arrest on a European Arrest Warrant | :00:26. | :00:27.
for an offence of illicit immigration/ human trafficking. | :00:28. | :00:29.
And I'll be finding out how police are cracking down on smugglers | :00:30. | :00:32.
using small planes like this to dodge the law. | :00:33. | :00:36.
Hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. | :00:37. | :01:05.
As always, we need your help to solve the crimes | :01:06. | :01:07.
The modern-day slaves exploited and living in squalor. | :01:08. | :01:17.
I put up with this suffering to help out my family. | :01:18. | :01:23.
And Emma Caldwell's body was found in a wood in South Lanarkshire. | :01:24. | :01:26.
12 years on, a new appeal to find her killer. | :01:27. | :01:33.
Today the team haved moved on to Sherburn | :01:34. | :01:35.
It's a beautiful morning here and I'm going to be finding out why the | :01:36. | :01:49.
police and the National Crime Agency are keeping a close eye on the many | :01:50. | :01:52.
thousands of small airfield like this one across the country where, | :01:53. | :01:56.
increasingly, they are being exploited by criminals bringing in | :01:57. | :01:59.
illegal goods, drugs and even people. | :02:00. | :02:02.
First, to Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire where an elderly | :02:03. | :02:06.
woman was subjected to a vicious attack in broad daylight. | :02:07. | :02:15.
Sheila and Ian Meskimmon have lived in Cleckheaton for 28 years. At 76 | :02:16. | :02:24.
years old, Sheila has always enjoyed her independence, especially when | :02:25. | :02:29.
Ian is off with his friends. Ian Bell is on a Monday and Thursday so | :02:30. | :02:33.
usually, he goes off at lunchtime and I wander down to the shops in | :02:34. | :02:37.
Cleckheaton and I've been doing that for years. I only lead a simple | :02:38. | :02:45.
life, really, nothing exciting. Just wander round the shops, not very | :02:46. | :02:50.
many, then come back up on the Greenway and take the same route | :02:51. | :02:57.
when I'm coming back. The Greenway is a cycle path used by many locals | :02:58. | :03:04.
as a short cut. One afternoon last month, Sheila had been shopping and | :03:05. | :03:13.
was walking her usual route home. That this time, she was being | :03:14. | :03:19.
watched. I was just walking down and I heard these footsteps coming | :03:20. | :03:23.
behind me so I just moved to the one side. Somebody touched me on the | :03:24. | :03:32.
shoulder. To her horror, Sheila realised her attacker had a weapon. | :03:33. | :03:37.
I spun round and saw him left the hammer and he hit my shoulder with | :03:38. | :03:46.
the hammer. And my head. Get off! Then he looked where my bag was, saw | :03:47. | :03:51.
the purse on top, so I grabbed the hammer off him and bent down, | :03:52. | :03:58.
grabbed my purse out of my bag, set off up the Greenway, and that was | :03:59. | :04:02.
the last time I saw him. It was over in such a short span of time. I | :04:03. | :04:07.
think if he hadn't seen a person, we wouldn't have let go of the hammer. | :04:08. | :04:11.
I think he would have hit me again so he could get my bag but seeing | :04:12. | :04:18.
the press, it saved me from getting a lot harder beating. Blood was | :04:19. | :04:29.
pouring out from my face. I had two shoes, everything wet through. I | :04:30. | :04:36.
thought, I need to get home. Sheila was in shock. The hammer had hit an | :04:37. | :04:41.
artery in her head, a passer-by called an ambulance and he was taken | :04:42. | :04:49.
to hospital for a brain scan. The man who put the stitches in comedy | :04:50. | :04:52.
pulled my hair apart like that and there was blood everywhere and they | :04:53. | :04:57.
looked like a punk rocker with red hair! A policeman took me to Leeds | :04:58. | :05:06.
General where she was. And I could see what a horrendous mess she was | :05:07. | :05:12.
in. All covered in blood. Quite a shock. This was a violent attack on | :05:13. | :05:23.
a vulnerable person. The man used completely unnecessary force. She | :05:24. | :05:31.
was immediately struck with a weapon which caused serious injury. This | :05:32. | :05:34.
happened on a well-known and well used public area. On an afternoon. | :05:35. | :05:40.
The police are appealing for any information to help trace this | :05:41. | :05:45.
person involved. The attack has seriously affected Sheila's | :05:46. | :05:51.
confidence but she is determined to move on with her life. The biggest | :05:52. | :05:58.
problem at the moment is she's not sure what his going to be like if | :05:59. | :06:02.
she goes out on her own. But I would like to see her try to do it. I | :06:03. | :06:09.
shan't go down that path on the Greenway any more. Forget about that | :06:10. | :06:13.
now. I'll just come back up the road. You've got to get on with your | :06:14. | :06:19.
life or they have one, in the end. You got to carry on and just forget | :06:20. | :06:23.
about it if you can. Put it on the back of your mind. I hope they find | :06:24. | :06:29.
him so he doesn't do it to anybody else. I would hate anybody else to | :06:30. | :06:35.
be hit on the head with a hammer, although he hasn't got a hammer now | :06:36. | :06:37.
because I stole it off him! Well, it's really impressive that | :06:38. | :06:43.
Sheila managed to grab DC Kris Roberts from | :06:44. | :06:45.
West Yorkshire Police joins me now. This was a particularly | :06:46. | :06:48.
vicious attack, wasn't it? Fortunately, there haven't been any | :06:49. | :06:56.
other incident similar to this wonderful stop the violence used was | :06:57. | :07:01.
completely unnecessary. Tell us more about where it happened. It is | :07:02. | :07:08.
Monday the 8th of May in Cleckheaton, 2:20pm. The Greenway is | :07:09. | :07:12.
a busy area, popular with locals, dog walkers, joggers, runners, there | :07:13. | :07:16.
is a little track which leads off to an estate called Roydwood Estate and | :07:17. | :07:23.
it was there it happened. Sheila suffered some nasty injuries from | :07:24. | :07:28.
this attack. Yes, she had a serious wound to her head. It required | :07:29. | :07:32.
hospital treatment, bruising to her face and shoulder. What do we know | :07:33. | :07:35.
about the suspect, because she was able to describe him? Sheila did | :07:36. | :07:40.
very well considering the split-second she had face-to-face | :07:41. | :07:42.
with the attacker, she could give a good description. A white male | :07:43. | :07:48.
between 50-60, Paul and Slim, unshaven grey stubbly face, a black | :07:49. | :07:55.
woollen hat. You have brought Mohammed used. This is the hammer | :07:56. | :08:01.
Sheila took from him. It's a substantial hammer, quite heavy, in | :08:02. | :08:07.
a plastic bag because of the frantic examinations for has been found on | :08:08. | :08:10.
the hammer but unfortunately it goes back to Sheila. Today you're looking | :08:11. | :08:14.
for any information at all. If you do recognise that the man from bad | :08:15. | :08:22.
ethernet, make sure you get in touch with as. We will be standing by for | :08:23. | :08:24.
your calls. Next, do you recognise any | :08:25. | :08:26.
of today's criminals caught on CCTV? Just so you know, a couple of these | :08:27. | :08:30.
are pretty serious. A woman is returning home late on a | :08:31. | :08:38.
Friday night. Completely unaware she's been followed. As she parks in | :08:39. | :08:43.
her driveway, a group of men suddenly rushed towards her. | :08:44. | :08:47.
Terrified, she sounds her pawn for help. Her husband runs out from the | :08:48. | :08:53.
house and tries to fight off the robbers but he is easily | :08:54. | :08:57.
outnumbered. They struggle with his wife. Eventually grabbing her | :08:58. | :09:01.
handbag. And then they make a run for it. These lowlife thugs took | :09:02. | :09:08.
around ?3000 in cash and the woman's bank cards, but they also left her | :09:09. | :09:14.
badly shaken. Police want to speak to this man who they believe was | :09:15. | :09:18.
caught on camera using the stolen cards the next day. If you know who | :09:19. | :09:21.
they are, give us their names. It is the early hours of the morning | :09:22. | :09:34.
but the party is still going strong in this pub in Wolverhampton. A | :09:35. | :09:38.
group of colleagues are out celebrating and minding their own | :09:39. | :09:42.
business but one unruly punter in the bobble hat is about to ruin the | :09:43. | :09:47.
night out. A man is standing with his co-workers getting ready to | :09:48. | :09:52.
leave when, out of nowhere, the bloke storms over and swings for | :09:53. | :09:56.
him, punching him in the eye. The attacker is dragged off leaving the | :09:57. | :10:00.
victim in pain on the floor. He was later taken to hospital where he had | :10:01. | :10:04.
to have surgery for a fractured eye socket. Do you know who this brutish | :10:05. | :10:07.
bloke is? A house in Norfolk, but these three | :10:08. | :10:19.
don't live here. They have broken in and seemed to be making themselves | :10:20. | :10:23.
quite at home. This one spot something he likes and it is swiped. | :10:24. | :10:29.
Hunting through the house upstairs and down, what they couldn't count | :10:30. | :10:35.
on was the homeowner turning up. He signs his horn to scare them off. It | :10:36. | :10:42.
seems to do the job quite nicely. Can you name this thieving trio? | :10:43. | :10:47.
If you recognise any of that lot, get on the phone now. | :10:48. | :10:50.
You can call for free on 08000 468999. | :10:51. | :10:52.
Text CW, space and then your message. | :10:53. | :10:56.
Texts will be charged at your standard message rate. | :10:57. | :10:59.
Now, small airfields like this can be a gateway for criminals smuggling | :11:00. | :11:10.
Keeping an eye on this is very much part of your job, isn't it? | :11:11. | :11:21.
It is, yes. I'm a member of the special Branch intelligence unit and | :11:22. | :11:27.
as an example, in North Yorkshire alone we have just over 100 small | :11:28. | :11:32.
airfields like the one we are here at today. We have set up a training | :11:33. | :11:36.
exercise, an aeroplane landed earlier and the officers have no | :11:37. | :11:40.
idea where the plane has come from 08081 689 111 who was on board but | :11:41. | :11:42.
we can see the officers being briefed at the moment. What are they | :11:43. | :11:50.
being told? To support Project Pegasus, for the public to report | :11:51. | :11:54.
flying movements, today is an exercise based on a from that member | :11:55. | :11:57.
of the public from a phone call suggesting it was a low-level flying | :11:58. | :12:02.
aircraft could possibly from the continent, which has landed here | :12:03. | :12:05.
today. I have been told to speak to the occupants and possibly carry out | :12:06. | :12:09.
a search and find out whether anything untoward has happened. You | :12:10. | :12:13.
can see the pilot coming out with another person so what are the | :12:14. | :12:17.
officers trying to do is to not we have to find out where the aircraft | :12:18. | :12:21.
has come from and who are the people on board, so they will be looking at | :12:22. | :12:24.
things like passport, documentation, just to see what they have got, | :12:25. | :12:29.
really. What kind of documentation do need to have to fly in airfields | :12:30. | :12:34.
like this? From the continent, it would be reasonable to have | :12:35. | :12:38.
passports at the very least, but for an internal flight, you don't need | :12:39. | :12:42.
anything. It's like using a car. That's what they are doing now, | :12:43. | :12:48.
speaking to the people. Thank you very much, interestingly, an | :12:49. | :12:50.
important part of this investigation is the dog searches. I'm joined now | :12:51. | :12:57.
by Noel Hancock, the dog handler for this lovely dog, so we will head | :12:58. | :13:00.
over to the scene because the dog would carry out a search but what is | :13:01. | :13:07.
she looking for? Drugs, cash and firearms. Talk me through exactly | :13:08. | :13:12.
what she will be sniffing out because it has the power of sent. | :13:13. | :13:20.
That's correct. Off she goes. Straightaway she is sniffing all the | :13:21. | :13:21.
areas to try and detect something. She's heading into the back hatch | :13:22. | :13:36.
here. OK, she has identified something. She's not moving, is she? | :13:37. | :13:43.
If you look closely, it looks like she has found a gun and also some | :13:44. | :13:49.
cash in there? That's what it looks like, yes. That's pretty impressive, | :13:50. | :13:56.
but we have been led to believe by some intelligence previously there | :13:57. | :13:59.
were drugs in this aeroplane as well, so this investigation is far | :14:00. | :14:03.
from over so join us later to see what happens next. Thanks, Michelle. | :14:04. | :14:06.
So clever, aren't they. As festival season begins, | :14:07. | :14:09.
we'll have some tips to stop music And can you name and shame this thug | :14:10. | :14:12.
who viciously attacked two But first, it's been 12 years | :14:13. | :14:17.
since Emma Caldwell's body was discovered in a wooded area | :14:18. | :14:29.
near Roberton in South Lanarkshire. The identity of the 27-year-old's | :14:30. | :14:36.
killer remains a mystery. This morning, police and Emma's | :14:37. | :14:38.
family are making a new appeal to Crimewatch Roadshow viewers | :14:39. | :14:41.
to help them finally We just had a great time, we just | :14:42. | :14:56.
loved each other so much. She meant an awful lot to me. It is something | :14:57. | :15:00.
no mother should have to deal with, the murder of a child. For Margaret | :15:01. | :15:05.
called well, the pain of losing her daughter Emma 12 years ago has been | :15:06. | :15:10.
made worse by the fact that her killer has never been caught. I need | :15:11. | :15:17.
this person to be found. I need him to tell me why he would take my | :15:18. | :15:22.
daughter's life from her and leave the whole family feeling as they do. | :15:23. | :15:30.
We miss her so much. We miss her every day. On the 4th of April 2005, | :15:31. | :15:36.
shortly before 11pm, Emma left the hostel where she was living in the | :15:37. | :15:41.
centre of Glasgow. She was captured on CCTV as she walked along Ingle | :15:42. | :15:46.
feel Street. It was the last time she was seen alive. A month later, | :15:47. | :15:57.
her body was found in woods near Tabak two, 40 miles outside the | :15:58. | :15:59.
city. Going to going to Robertson was just an | :16:00. | :16:12.
unbelievable experience. You just thought, how terrified must she have | :16:13. | :16:19.
been, what did she go through before this? At the time of her death, Emma | :16:20. | :16:26.
was involved in prostitution, and in April this year, police conducted a | :16:27. | :16:32.
new search of the area. They have issued an appeal to anyone involved | :16:33. | :16:39.
in prostitution at the time who may have been taken to the woods by a | :16:40. | :16:43.
client to get in touch. Someone please come forward, that's all we | :16:44. | :16:49.
need. If you are out there, you know this man is a danger to other women. | :16:50. | :16:59.
He must be found. He must be brought to justice. He must be brought to | :17:00. | :17:03.
justice for Emma. Well, I'm now joined in the studio | :17:04. | :17:07.
by Detective Superintendent David Heartbreaking. You can see from the | :17:08. | :17:18.
video, Emma's death has had a massive impact on her family, and | :17:19. | :17:21.
the fact it has gone for 12 years now without us finding out who was | :17:22. | :17:25.
responsible, we haven't been able to get any closure. We saw how | :17:26. | :17:30.
desperate they are for answers. What is the investigation like for you at | :17:31. | :17:35.
the moment? I have been reinvestigating the case for two | :17:36. | :17:40.
years now. The last sighting of Emma was just before 11pm on the 4th of | :17:41. | :17:47.
April 2005. Her body was found over a month later down in Roberton, and | :17:48. | :17:52.
the investigation has been trying to establish who she met that night and | :17:53. | :17:56.
who she was in contact with. We have been going back to the witnesses | :17:57. | :18:00.
from the original case, re-enter viewing them, looking at more CCTV | :18:01. | :18:03.
opportunities, and forensics as well. We can see a map of the area. | :18:04. | :18:10.
Roberton is where she was found, it is some distance from Glasgow. It is | :18:11. | :18:15.
70 miles from the city centre, and that is the crux of this | :18:16. | :18:19.
investigation. How did a girl who was living in Glasgow, handed her | :18:20. | :18:24.
body end up so far from the city centre? We know it was unusual for | :18:25. | :18:29.
women who were involved in restitution to go that far from the | :18:30. | :18:35.
city, so quite significant. It is definitely significant. We mentioned | :18:36. | :18:38.
that she may well have been involved in prostitution. You will also like | :18:39. | :18:43.
to hear from other people who were involved in that as well, because | :18:44. | :18:47.
they may have been taken by some distance by someone as well, and | :18:48. | :18:50.
they may hold the clues. That is the crux of the appeal today. I'm | :18:51. | :18:54.
certain there are women out there who have been taken to that location | :18:55. | :18:58.
or excessive miles outside Glasgow whilst involved in prostitution | :18:59. | :19:04.
either back in 2005 or maybe still today, and my plea is, you can see | :19:05. | :19:09.
the impact Emma's death has had on her family, and I would ask anybody | :19:10. | :19:12.
with any information to please get in touch with us. And it is the | :19:13. | :19:16.
closure the family haven't got, that is heartbreaking. You are doing | :19:17. | :19:22.
everything you can, and someone out there might hold that vital piece of | :19:23. | :19:24.
information, so you just urge people to get in touch with you today. | :19:25. | :19:27.
Thank you very much for coming in. As David says, if you have any | :19:28. | :19:31.
information that could help this Or you can contact | :19:32. | :19:33.
Crimestoppers anonymously. Now, we've heard how small airfields | :19:34. | :19:41.
like this one can be abused by smugglers of all kinds, | :19:42. | :19:49.
including people traffickers. These criminals often operate | :19:50. | :19:52.
in several countries, disappearing across borders | :19:53. | :19:55.
when police get on their tail. Some try and hide out in the UK but, | :19:56. | :19:57.
as we can see now, Yorkshire is no Cities like Leeds, Bradford and | :19:58. | :20:14.
Wakefield attracts their fair share of foreign offenders on the run. In | :20:15. | :20:20.
the last year alone, West Yorkshire Police's extradition unit has | :20:21. | :20:25.
arrested around 100 fugitives. Hello! Police! | :20:26. | :20:29.
All of them wanted for offences in other European countries. Other than | :20:30. | :20:37.
the Metropolitan Police, we in West Yorkshire have executed more | :20:38. | :20:40.
European arrest warrant stand any other force in the country. That is | :20:41. | :20:44.
done on purpose to protect our communities. Today, DC Dave Lockwood | :20:45. | :20:52.
is on the trial of a man wanted for human trafficking. And Iranians born | :20:53. | :21:01.
British national was convicted in another lens and sentenced to 18 | :21:02. | :21:05.
months, but he fled to the UK. Police believe he is living in this | :21:06. | :21:15.
lock of flat in Wakefield. Dave checks to see if anyone's in. Hello? | :21:16. | :21:26.
Female. Can you open the door, please, love? It's the police. I can | :21:27. | :21:32.
see you, you are going to have to open the door. It's the police. If | :21:33. | :21:37.
you don't open the door, force will be used. Omar, I will talk to you | :21:38. | :21:45.
once you open the door. OK, don't be playing silly games. Let's go into | :21:46. | :21:49.
your living room and have a chat. Come on, then. What is your name? | :21:50. | :21:58.
Omar Mahmoudi. The Netherlands police and Holland have issued a | :21:59. | :22:02.
warrant for your arrest related to an offence that occurred on the 30th | :22:03. | :22:06.
of December 2015 where they say you have driven a truck through the | :22:07. | :22:09.
Netherlands with five illegal immigrant is on board. So they want | :22:10. | :22:13.
you extradited to go back to the Netherlands. | :22:14. | :22:29.
OK, what we'll do is, because this warrant has been issued, I can't do | :22:30. | :22:36.
anything other than arrest you and put you before the court, but if you | :22:37. | :22:40.
have other information, you can take that with you and show it before the | :22:41. | :22:45.
court. So any medication, anything you need, any medication you want to | :22:46. | :22:51.
take with you, I am going to arrest you and I will bring you. I can come | :22:52. | :22:56.
on my own. No, you are coming with me. I will make that decision | :22:57. | :23:00.
depending on how you act in the next five minutes. You are under arrest | :23:01. | :23:07.
on a European Arrest Warrant for the offence of illegal immigration or | :23:08. | :23:15.
human trafficking. I didn't do anything. I have noted your reply. | :23:16. | :23:24.
I'm not happy with you. So for that reason, you are going to be | :23:25. | :23:29.
handcuffed, OK? Firstly you didn't open the door, and I have asked you | :23:30. | :23:32.
to keep your hands out of your pockets, and you haven't. I have | :23:33. | :23:37.
never met you before, and I'm not taking a chance. Yes, we are keeping | :23:38. | :23:40.
those on, I'm not happy. It's back to the police desh and, | :23:41. | :23:52.
where Mahmoudi spends the night in the cells. His cases later heard at | :23:53. | :23:59.
Westminster Magistrates' Court, and he has now been extradited to the | :24:00. | :24:02.
Netherlands to serve his sentence. Paddy Kerr is here from | :24:03. | :24:12.
the National Crime Agency. He has special responsibility | :24:13. | :24:15.
for policing airfields in the North. We saw a case there | :24:16. | :24:24.
of people trafficking. There are 3,500 small | :24:25. | :24:26.
airfields in the UK. How on earth to you keep | :24:27. | :24:28.
tabs on them all? It is not easy, but together with | :24:29. | :24:34.
Border Force and our law enforcement partners, here and overseas, and | :24:35. | :24:38.
more importantly with the public and private sectors, we collect, analyse | :24:39. | :24:44.
and disseminate intelligence in relation to organised crime groups | :24:45. | :24:48.
abusing the general aviation processes and policies. How do you | :24:49. | :24:55.
guard against that threat? With 3500 airfields, just in the North of | :24:56. | :25:01.
England, probably up to 500 airfields, we can't have law | :25:02. | :25:05.
enforcement at every airfield, so we are reliant on the public and our | :25:06. | :25:07.
partners to give us the intelligence so we can prioritise the highest | :25:08. | :25:12.
threat, and as I said, through the collection and analysis of that | :25:13. | :25:15.
intelligence, try to be as intelligence led as we can, and then | :25:16. | :25:19.
picking and choosing the types of airfields and criminality that we | :25:20. | :25:23.
are going to attack. There was a major incident at a small airfield | :25:24. | :25:27.
not far from their not so long ago. There was, it has recently gone to | :25:28. | :25:32.
trial, three people have been convicted in relation to that | :25:33. | :25:36.
airfield. It is only 15 miles from here. There was a general aviation | :25:37. | :25:44.
pilot called Andrew Wright, he had the nickname Biggles. He was | :25:45. | :25:48.
responsible for bringing in 34 kilos of cocaine into North Yorkshire, and | :25:49. | :25:51.
together with his associates from London they received 66 years' | :25:52. | :25:59.
imprisonment. So it goes to show that the smuggling activities are | :26:00. | :26:04.
real problem? Yes, the availability of aeroplanes on the access is key, | :26:05. | :26:07.
but I would take the opportunity to make the appeal in relation to an | :26:08. | :26:12.
investigation the National Crime Agency are conducting in relation to | :26:13. | :26:16.
seven kilos of cocaine which was recovered from a briefcase within a | :26:17. | :26:19.
light aircraft at Bagby airfield in October 20 15. The pilot of that | :26:20. | :26:26.
aircraft was arrested, but we are seeking a gentleman by the name of | :26:27. | :26:31.
Jason Stephen Waterman in his early 30s from the north London area. We | :26:32. | :26:37.
believe he frequents boxing clubs and gyms in the Watford area, and | :26:38. | :26:41.
the National Crime Agency would like to speak to Mr Waterman in | :26:42. | :26:43.
connection with that seizure of cocaine. | :26:44. | :26:47.
Any info, as Paddy says, please do get in touch using | :26:48. | :26:51.
Now, if you're a music lover, you'll know that Glastonbury's | :26:52. | :26:55.
about to start, and that means the beginning of this year's | :26:56. | :26:58.
Live music events aren't cheap, with the average festival ticket | :26:59. | :27:03.
Not surprising, then, that fraudsters want to get their hands | :27:04. | :27:09.
DI Mick Dodge from City of London Police is here again. | :27:10. | :27:14.
last week you were telling us about holiday fraud, | :27:15. | :27:16.
And Darren Griffin is here, too, who sadly fell victim | :27:17. | :27:20.
Last summer my daughter and her friend wanted to go | :27:21. | :27:31.
to the Boomtown Fair - which is a big music and arts | :27:32. | :27:34.
There were only three days to go, so the ticket office was sold out. | :27:35. | :27:44.
My wife saw tickets being advertised on Gumtree, said it was a local | :27:45. | :27:47.
seller so thought we could collect in person, thought | :27:48. | :27:49.
And of course when we turned up to the festival, the tickets had been | :27:50. | :28:00.
presented several times. So what did you feel when you realise that this | :28:01. | :28:05.
was a scam? Just sick, I thought I knew a scam and had taken a | :28:06. | :28:10.
precaution to make sure that it was valid. And so many genuine things | :28:11. | :28:15.
are eating it these days. Yes, you just turn up on the event on the | :28:16. | :28:23.
day. And Mick, unfortunately this is a typical experience, isn't it? | :28:24. | :28:29.
Sites like Gumtree and other classifieds sites are popular places | :28:30. | :28:33.
In the last three years, more than 21,000 people have | :28:34. | :28:38.
reported falling victim to ticket fraudsters, losing | :28:39. | :28:40.
Criminals target sold-out events. And to show the scale of this, you | :28:41. | :28:50.
came up with an experiment yourselves where you set up a | :28:51. | :28:53.
fraudulent website to show people how easy it would be. | :28:54. | :28:56.
In April, we worked with Action Fraud and made a fake | :28:57. | :29:00.
We advertised sold-out concerts like Bruno Mars or a Dell. We targeted | :29:01. | :29:18.
towards areas where people lived near sell-out concerts. When people | :29:19. | :29:21.
progressed through to where they were trying to buy tickets for us. | :29:22. | :29:25.
And that is the point where you say, if this had been a real fraudster's | :29:26. | :29:30.
website, you would have lost your money by now. Absolutely, they | :29:31. | :29:33.
didn't get their tickets but they also didn't lose any money. What | :29:34. | :29:38.
they did get was sand crime prevention advice to try to protect | :29:39. | :29:43.
themselves. And ?300 you lost, and 1500 people could have done the | :29:44. | :29:47.
same, so a lot of money if it was good advice. Where did you get the | :29:48. | :30:00.
name from? It is an anagram of fraudsters. Always try to buy | :30:01. | :30:04.
tickets from the official box office or reputable sellers. By their | :30:05. | :30:13.
members of the industry body? Never respond to unsolicited e-mails, and | :30:14. | :30:16.
never pay by direct bank transfer, you should always be using a credit | :30:17. | :30:21.
card or debit card, and when you put any information into the Internet, | :30:22. | :30:25.
look for the padlock in the address bar, that tells you that the | :30:26. | :30:32.
transaction is secure. Great advice, thank you. You will be back later in | :30:33. | :30:36.
the series with more advice, and Darren unfortunately it is too late | :30:37. | :30:39.
to you, but thank you for sharing your story, you will certainly be | :30:40. | :30:40.
helping other people. There's lots more advice on the | :30:41. | :30:49.
Action Fraud website. Michelle, back to you. | :30:50. | :30:50.
Next, Humberside Police are appealing for help finding a man | :30:51. | :30:54.
who assaulted at least two other men in the seaside town of Bridlington | :30:55. | :30:57.
It happened on tested in Bridlington on Sunday the 15th of December. A | :30:58. | :31:19.
gentleman was assaulted at the offender walked towards the takeaway | :31:20. | :31:23.
and from that incident, he crossed over the street and walked back away | :31:24. | :31:30.
from the seafront. Let's talk about the first attacker, exactly what | :31:31. | :31:34.
happened there. The mail was walking along the street when the offender | :31:35. | :31:38.
said something. He turned around to see what he said and, with that, the | :31:39. | :31:41.
offender punched him very hard to his jaw. The second incident was | :31:42. | :31:49.
caught on CCTV, wasn't it? That's right, he comes out of the takeaway | :31:50. | :31:52.
and head-butt the victim twice to the face extremely hard and follows | :31:53. | :31:58.
him with a volley of punches knocking him unconscious onto the | :31:59. | :32:02.
floor. This is a horrible attack and he suffered serious injuries. Yes, | :32:03. | :32:07.
the first man suffered a broken jaw and had to have plates and stitches | :32:08. | :32:13.
put inside his mouth. He cracked his elbow and had a bruising with a lot | :32:14. | :32:18.
of pain. The second man was knocked unconscious and had concussion and | :32:19. | :32:20.
is suffering with pain to his head and shoulders. It's just awful but | :32:21. | :32:24.
thankfully you have some clear footage of the attack. Yes, the | :32:25. | :32:29.
footage inside the takeaway shows the man fulfil his five foot six, | :32:30. | :32:33.
light brown short hair, wearing a white shirt. There was also a lady | :32:34. | :32:38.
in a red dress their outside and we would love to speak to her in | :32:39. | :32:43.
relation to this incident. Is a local person or someone from outside | :32:44. | :32:48.
the area? We believe he is outside the area. We've done some research | :32:49. | :32:52.
and a couple of Facebook appeals and with it being a tight-knit | :32:53. | :32:58.
community, we have not had the information we believed we would get | :32:59. | :33:01.
so we believe that someone from out of town. You are appealing for any | :33:02. | :33:07.
information today? Hopefully you can help. If you do recognise this man, | :33:08. | :33:10.
please get in touch with it using the numbers on the screen. We will | :33:11. | :33:14.
be standing by for your calls all day. Rav. Let's hope someone can | :33:15. | :33:18.
name him. Now it's time for a look | :33:19. | :33:21.
at today's Wanted Faces. He was arrested by officers | :33:22. | :33:23.
from Devon and Cornwall police in connection with the supply | :33:24. | :33:27.
of class A drugs. He was released on police bail, | :33:28. | :33:29.
but has failed to return Domi is from Albania and it's | :33:30. | :33:31.
thought he could be working He was arrested in connection | :33:32. | :33:35.
with a sexual assault on a woman and released on bail, | :33:36. | :33:41.
but he's failed to return Originally from Bangladesh, | :33:42. | :33:44.
31-year-old Islam now has links to Leicester, | :33:45. | :33:47.
London, Bristol and Hastings. He was jailed for three and half | :33:48. | :33:51.
years for burglary and theft He's failed to stick | :33:52. | :33:57.
to the conditions of his release, though, and is now wanted | :33:58. | :34:02.
back in prison. He has a number of tattoos, | :34:03. | :34:04.
including a Tasmanian devil on his chest and a black panther | :34:05. | :34:06.
on his back. He has links to West Yorkshire, | :34:07. | :34:11.
Lincolnshire and Oxfordshire. Finally, do you recognise | :34:12. | :34:15.
Cecil George Courtier? Although you may know him as Thomas | :34:16. | :34:18.
or George Enright, Patrick, Paul or Thomas Mullins or even John | :34:19. | :34:22.
Purscell. Detectives at the Met Police | :34:23. | :34:26.
would like to speak to him in connection to numerous burglaries | :34:27. | :34:29.
at businesses and The 68-year-old may also be wearing | :34:30. | :34:31.
glasses, as in this picture. As well as London, he has links | :34:32. | :34:38.
to Devon, Salford and Manchester. If you know where any of these faces | :34:39. | :34:40.
are, make sure you get in touch Earlier on, we saw how dogs searched | :34:41. | :34:47.
the plane that's just landed at Sherburn airfield here in North | :34:48. | :34:56.
Yorkshire. The dog identified some cash on the | :34:57. | :35:06.
plane as well as a gunner. So that was the start of the | :35:07. | :35:20.
investigation but we did also have some intelligence that there were | :35:21. | :35:23.
traces of drugs on the plane but we didn't actually find them is, so | :35:24. | :35:28.
what we think that happened? We think whilst the plane was circling, | :35:29. | :35:33.
flying low, a package has been discarded somewhere on the grassy | :35:34. | :35:38.
area within the airfield. Our intention is to set out to Billy to | :35:39. | :35:43.
do an area search to see if he can locate a package which has been | :35:44. | :35:47.
discarded. OK, let's see Billy in action. Talk be through how this | :35:48. | :35:52.
will happen is it similar to what happened earlier, isn't it? She will | :35:53. | :35:57.
set up from a thick start, send him on his way, and he will work on a | :35:58. | :36:03.
cent, workers were into a package or anything which contains drugs, cash | :36:04. | :36:08.
or a firearm so hopefully come at the end of it, we would get a | :36:09. | :36:13.
result. He is watching Linda. Ready for his cue. She's about to set. | :36:14. | :36:19.
That's correct. He will work the area. Limbo world cordoned off the | :36:20. | :36:27.
area, but is onto something now. They cover a fair distance. They are | :36:28. | :36:34.
a great asset when the art coming to open a searches. It so much less | :36:35. | :36:38.
manpower intensive. Billy has found something there. He has gone | :36:39. | :36:44.
somewhere else now. He's working his way back. He is doing what we call | :36:45. | :36:54.
the freeze. The dog will stare and stare at the object. It looks like | :36:55. | :36:59.
he has identified the package. That's exactly what he has done. | :37:00. | :37:06.
Lets see exactly what did happen earlier, because the plane came over | :37:07. | :37:10.
and dropped off the drugs package exactly as he said. Fantastic. A | :37:11. | :37:15.
successful mission. Thank you very much. Looks like he's having a great | :37:16. | :37:22.
time now. It's all one big game for them. | :37:23. | :37:35.
Also be good trafficking is a big problem. It's a problem on a massive | :37:36. | :37:43.
scale. It's happening in car washes, male bars and on farms. Spotting the | :37:44. | :37:50.
signs of exploitation is a priority for police. On this farm near | :37:51. | :37:57.
Newport in South Wales, officers rescued Daryl. A man with learning | :37:58. | :38:01.
difficulties. He'd been kept as a slave for 13 years. And forced to | :38:02. | :38:10.
live in appalling conditions. The man responsible, David Daniel Doran, | :38:11. | :38:21.
was jailed for 4.5 years. In South Yorkshire, reported cases of | :38:22. | :38:23.
exploitation rose fivefold last year. It can involve forced labour, | :38:24. | :38:30.
it can involve domestic servitude, sexual exploitation. People don't | :38:31. | :38:37.
know what the signs and indicators are or if they do, they may not see | :38:38. | :38:40.
them because it's not happening right in front of you and it's not | :38:41. | :38:44.
there on the street so it can happen to anyone. To tackle this growing | :38:45. | :38:50.
problem, South Yorkshire Police as a dedicated anti-slavery unit. | :38:51. | :38:56.
Detective Sergeant Nicola Leach is briefing the team for this morning | :38:57. | :39:02.
's operation. Intelligence indicates hand car washes are places where | :39:03. | :39:05.
people are found in exploitative situations. We are going to gather | :39:06. | :39:09.
information about each identified worker via the use of safeguarding | :39:10. | :39:14.
questionnaires, all workers encountered will be treated as | :39:15. | :39:18.
potential victims of human trafficking and less specific | :39:19. | :39:20.
intelligence or behaviour suggests otherwise. Nicola and gone ahead to | :39:21. | :39:30.
the location. -- Donna. Gaining the trust of victims can often be | :39:31. | :39:36.
difficult. Naturally, if you don't know anyone, and you don't know who | :39:37. | :39:39.
you can turn to, then you are not naturally going to speak out and you | :39:40. | :39:43.
will become dependent on the person who might be the person who is | :39:44. | :39:48.
exploiting you. This isn't just a police operation. Team me to | :39:49. | :39:51.
immigration officials, charity workers and interpreters. The | :39:52. | :39:55.
information the police hold is nothing to suggest anyone is holding | :39:56. | :40:04.
any weapons or be harmed today. At the car wash, the workers and | :40:05. | :40:07.
employers are separated and interviewed. At the minute, they are | :40:08. | :40:13.
talking to the three people working here too tried to do safeguarding | :40:14. | :40:16.
questionnaires and make sure they are safe. The gentleman I spoke to | :40:17. | :40:22.
was quite happy with the work he is getting. Is quite forthcoming with | :40:23. | :40:26.
the details of what's happening, which usually indicates that things | :40:27. | :40:30.
are as they should be. He has his national insurance number and is in | :40:31. | :40:33.
possession of various documentation and he is happy with his conditions | :40:34. | :40:40.
at the moment so it's a good result. The police are satisfied the | :40:41. | :40:43.
situation at this car washes fine. But modern slavery is a real | :40:44. | :40:49.
problem. When Daniel, not his real name, came to the UK from Eastern | :40:50. | :40:53.
Europe, the new life he had been promised became a nightmare. | :40:54. | :40:59.
TRANSLATION: When I first came to England, I slept on the floor in | :41:00. | :41:02.
squalor for two months until I managed to get money together to | :41:03. | :41:05.
write myself a mattress. I wasn't even eating, I would eat once a day | :41:06. | :41:12.
to send money back. As well as poor living conditions, he was exploited | :41:13. | :41:15.
by the boss of a car wash where he worked. My employer held onto my ID | :41:16. | :41:21.
card so I could not leave. I was working seven days a week from 7am | :41:22. | :41:26.
until 7pm. He would treat us like animals. I would put up with this to | :41:27. | :41:33.
help my family. One guy wanted to get away and he was beaten up very | :41:34. | :41:37.
badly. I stayed because of the poverty in my country. I stayed to | :41:38. | :41:41.
