This is Madagascar.

0:00:010:00:02

A vast island in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa.

0:00:020:00:07

And home to some of the rarest animals on our planet.

0:00:070:00:12

ANIMAL HOWLS

0:00:120:00:14

Incredibly, 80% of the wildlife that lives here is unique.

0:00:140:00:18

They can only be found here, in Madagascar.

0:00:180:00:22

But there's a problem.

0:00:230:00:25

This island is in danger.

0:00:250:00:28

Can eight ordinary adventurers from the UK...

0:00:300:00:34

-ALL:

-Ohhhhhhh, Madagascar!

0:00:340:00:36

..explore this fragile paradise...

0:00:360:00:39

That did not just happen!

0:00:410:00:43

-..face the toughest challenges of their lives.

-SCREAMS

0:00:450:00:49

..to discover for themselves just what it'll take

0:00:490:00:52

to save the stunning wildlife of this threatened world

0:00:520:00:57

before it's lost forever.

0:00:570:00:59

After a 6,000-mile trip, the kids have made it to Madagascar,

0:01:370:01:40

but just to get to their first challenge means a two-day journey

0:01:400:01:45

across this huge island.

0:01:450:01:47

There's a lot of poverty in Madagascar,

0:01:470:01:49

and Henry's finding it a change from his home the Midlands.

0:01:490:01:53

There's lots of rice paddies.

0:01:530:01:56

All these mud houses and stuff.

0:01:560:01:58

It looks like they're mud-brick making, by the look of it.

0:01:580:02:03

It's a culture shock for Yorkshire lass Raina, as well.

0:02:030:02:07

You see these kind of things on TV

0:02:070:02:09

but seeing them in reality is totally different

0:02:090:02:12

because you're actually there and experiencing it for yourself.

0:02:120:02:17

But the adventure's only just beginning for this motley crew.

0:02:170:02:22

The team have arrived in Kianjavato

0:02:220:02:24

in the south-east of Madagascar.

0:02:240:02:27

And this basic camp will be home for the next five days.

0:02:270:02:30

This is the Kianjavato research centre where we're staying.

0:02:300:02:34

It's like a big warehouse, it's made of containers,

0:02:340:02:37

and we're sleeping at the top bit.

0:02:370:02:40

They're not exactly going to be living in luxury.

0:02:400:02:43

These are the holes we call toilets.

0:02:430:02:46

Oh, it's minging!

0:02:460:02:47

They're absolutely disgusting and they smell foul!

0:02:470:02:52

But there's a very good reason our team have been sent

0:02:520:02:55

to this wild and remote corner of Madagascar.

0:02:550:02:59

This part of the island used to be covered by jungle,

0:02:590:03:02

but only 10% remains.

0:03:020:03:04

Their first challenge is to understand why it's happened,

0:03:040:03:08

and how this has affected the wildlife.

0:03:080:03:11

And there's one species of animal

0:03:110:03:13

that's really been devastated by the loss of the forests.

0:03:130:03:16

This landscape is home to one of the rarest groups of primates on Earth,

0:03:200:03:25

and probably the island's most famous creatures - lemurs.

0:03:250:03:29

The team's first challenge is to find and observe the lemurs,

0:03:320:03:36

so they're joining conservationist Lee and his team,

0:03:360:03:39

who've been monitoring the lemurs for years.

0:03:390:03:42

Be careful on the bridge, it's a bit wobbly.

0:03:420:03:46

The team are split in two.

0:03:460:03:47

Raina's group will look for a species of lemur

0:03:470:03:50

-that live up in the treetops.

-Looking forward to it. It'll be good.

0:03:500:03:54

Henry's team will be in the undergrowth looking

0:03:540:03:58

for the greater bamboo lemur.

0:03:580:03:59

I'm really excited about seeing any lemur.

0:03:590:04:03

But it might be like finding a needle in a haystack.

0:04:070:04:12

Bamboo lemurs, in particular, are incredibly rare.

0:04:120:04:15

They're unique to Madagascar.

0:04:150:04:17

Their daily diet of bamboo shoots

0:04:170:04:20

contains enough cyanide to kill a human.

0:04:200:04:23

Scientists have no idea why these noxious nibbles don't affect them.

0:04:230:04:27

But with rainforests in Madagascar being destroyed

0:04:270:04:31

these sweet little critters

0:04:310:04:32

are one of the most critically endangered primates -

0:04:320:04:36

with less than 500 left in the entire world.

0:04:360:04:39

And only 30 in this patch of jungle -

0:04:390:04:41

and that's why the team are here.

0:04:410:04:44

Luckily, our kids have tools.

0:04:460:04:48

It may look like an old telly aerial but this system, called ATS,

0:04:480:04:52

is actually a weapon in the battle

0:04:520:04:54

to save these creatures from extinction.

0:04:540:04:57

Like, the lemurs wear a collar,

0:04:570:04:59

and they have, like, a chip in it that this can track,

0:04:590:05:03

so, like, it beeps.

0:05:030:05:04

I'm tracking a lemur with the ATS

0:05:040:05:08

and just a second ago the signal was really strong,

0:05:080:05:12

with loads of beeping, so we'll follow the path round

0:05:120:05:15

and hopefully there's more beeping.

0:05:150:05:19

BEEPS

0:05:190:05:21

It's a great start for the Bamboo team,

0:05:210:05:24

they're tracking a strong signal.

0:05:240:05:27

We're trying to spot a lemur

0:05:370:05:39

and we think it's in the trees really, really close

0:05:390:05:42

so everybody's just stopped.

0:05:420:05:44

And I think everybody... You can, like, hear the tension in the air.

0:05:440:05:49

At the moment we're tracking a bamboo lemur,

0:05:530:05:56

so now we're going down this bamboo track

0:05:560:05:59

to try and find it because it was beeping really loud on the ATS,

0:05:590:06:03

so hopefully we'll find a lemur.

0:06:030:06:06

It looks really tricky to get down.

0:06:060:06:09

Let's go forward.

0:06:090:06:11

If one person falls, they'll make everyone else fall.

0:06:110:06:16

Whoa.

0:06:160:06:18

But something's not right - there's a signal, but no sign of a lemur.

0:06:200:06:25

Where are the bamboo lemurs?

0:06:270:06:30

So, we want to be looking in the tops of the bamboo.

0:06:300:06:34

See where it's all green?

0:06:340:06:36

-Got quite a strong signal here.

-The beeps going up there, I think. Yeah.

0:06:390:06:43

BEEPING

0:06:430:06:46

What's the matter?

0:06:460:06:48

The collar's fallen off the animal.

0:06:480:06:51

CHUCKLES

0:06:510:06:53

See it? It's just behind that.

0:06:530:06:56

That's the radio collar.

0:06:560:06:58

We trekked down this big bamboo hill,

0:06:580:07:01

nearly killing ourself,

0:07:010:07:03

and we get to the location of the lemur

0:07:030:07:05

And the collar's off the lemur. Yeah!

0:07:050:07:09

This piece here is an antenna to send the signal.

0:07:090:07:13

So has that got caught on something and just ripped off?

0:07:130:07:16

Probably just a piece has broken.

0:07:160:07:19

-Yeah. Is that fur?

-That's fur.

-Yep. It's a bit of lemur fur.

0:07:190:07:24

They smell very musky.

0:07:240:07:27

Yeah. Can you smell it?

0:07:270:07:30

It smells a bit like ferrets.

0:07:300:07:32

Fair-do's. Just a really musky smell.

0:07:330:07:37

Aaah!

0:07:370:07:39

But actually this is really bad news.

0:07:400:07:42

A collar means someone can keep an eye on it.

0:07:420:07:45

They need to get that collar back on somehow.

0:07:450:07:48

Once you find them with the radio collar you can check their health,

0:07:480:07:52

see if they've got any diseases, and sort it out if they do.

0:07:520:07:56

Lemurs are endangered, so if you put the collar on,

0:07:560:07:59

you can count how many are in an area,

0:07:590:08:01

and know how well the population's doing.

0:08:010:08:04

The team are going to have to use

0:08:040:08:06

the old-fashioned method of finding the lemur by sight.

0:08:060:08:09

It may be a long day!

0:08:090:08:11

Over in Raina's team, things are looking up.

0:08:130:08:17

15 metres up, in fact!

0:08:170:08:18

-And it's jumped.

-Whoa!

0:08:180:08:20

Yeah, now you can see it.

0:08:210:08:23

This is a black-and-white ruffed lemur.

0:08:260:08:28

It's a special moment for everyone.

0:08:280:08:31

There's another... I think that one from over there is up there now.

0:08:310:08:36

Yeah, I can see the collar from here.

0:08:360:08:40

The bit sticking up from the lemur's head is the radio collar.

0:08:400:08:44

It's been put on the dominant animal in the group,

0:08:440:08:47

so they can track the whole family.

0:08:470:08:50

It also means that this lemur is a big cheese in his world!

0:08:500:08:54

Imagine being so high up, would be so, like, cool just...sitting up

0:08:540:08:59

in one of the tall branches.

0:08:590:09:01

That's a rebel, that one.

0:09:030:09:04

-Going upside down.

-Looks like a sloth!

0:09:040:09:07

The team are starting to realise just how lucky they are.

0:09:090:09:12

I feel privileged to be able to see one in the wild,

0:09:120:09:15

cos they're getting more rare.

0:09:150:09:17

No, I'm really interested in seeing more lemurs.

0:09:170:09:20

It's like a once-in-a-lifetime thing to be here and look at them.

0:09:200:09:25

It's quite cool that we've, like,

0:09:250:09:27

us four, have got to see these really cool lemurs.

0:09:270:09:31

How you doing guys?

0:09:340:09:36

Across the forest, the Bamboo team

0:09:360:09:38

have also had their perseverance rewarded.

0:09:380:09:40

-That's a lemur just up there.

-Oh, my God!

-See, just up there?

0:09:400:09:44

That's one of our animals - a greater bamboo lemur.

0:09:440:09:49

There's a lemur just...just in front of us!

0:09:490:09:52

This is one of the rarest primates,

0:09:520:09:54

and they're just sitting in a tree just there.

0:09:540:09:57

That's pretty special.

0:09:570:10:00

Unfortunately, it's not the lemur who lost his collar,

0:10:000:10:03

but it doesn't make the moment any less extraordinary.

0:10:030:10:06

Come in here, you see the head?

0:10:060:10:09

This is pretty special, seeing this.

0:10:120:10:15

Very privileged.

0:10:150:10:17

But it's a privilege that might not be around for much longer.

0:10:190:10:24

Why are lemurs so rare?

0:10:240:10:26

The habitat they live in is being encroached by human population.

0:10:260:10:30

They live in forests, so their habitat is ever shrinking

0:10:300:10:33

and therefore their population is shrinking.

0:10:330:10:36

So is it going to be a problem that 95% of the lemurs' diet is bamboo?

0:10:360:10:42

Yes. People are chopping this down for agricultural use because

0:10:420:10:46

human population, ever expanding, if the bamboo goes, they go.

0:10:460:10:49

Yeah.

0:10:490:10:51

So it's pretty dire,

0:10:510:10:52

the things that are going on with lemurs in Madagascar.

0:10:520:10:56

And it's this dilemma

0:10:560:10:57

that's the root cause of the lemurs' possible demise.

0:10:570:11:01

It's kind of a battle between the lemurs and the humans

0:11:010:11:05

and right now we don't really know who's going to win it.

0:11:050:11:11

But I think we should try all that we can to help them

0:11:110:11:15

because they're just... they're amazing

0:11:150:11:18

and this place is amazing

0:11:180:11:20

and it's really sad that it's in so much trouble right now.

0:11:200:11:27

It'd be amazing to grow up here.

0:11:300:11:32

Steep steps.

0:11:320:11:33

But to work out a plan to change this,

0:11:350:11:38

the team need to understand the issue from both sides.

0:11:380:11:42

Their guide Hery has offered to take some of them to his nearby village

0:11:420:11:45

to show them one of the biggest reasons forests are cut down.

0:11:450:11:49

Rice.

0:11:500:11:52

Rice is grown in flooded fields called paddies,

0:11:520:11:55

and is the main food source

0:11:550:11:57

for the 20 million people living in Madagascar.

0:11:570:12:00

Forests have been chopped down to make way for these paddy fields.

0:12:000:12:05

This is Hery's rice paddy field, which he farms to feed his children.

0:12:050:12:11

He wants to show the team

0:12:110:12:12

that it's not just hard for the wildlife to thrive,

0:12:120:12:15

it's also really difficult for families to get by too.

0:12:150:12:19

Everyone has to dig in.

0:12:190:12:21

How long does it take him to grow all of the rice?

0:12:210:12:25

SHE TRANSLATES

0:12:250:12:28

How much rice do you get from a field this size?

0:12:300:12:33

SHE TRANSLATES

0:12:330:12:37

And that's only just enough rice to feed his family,

0:12:520:12:55

without any profit on top.

0:12:550:12:57

Can you imagine if you had to put in this much effort

0:13:000:13:03

to get dinner on your plate?

0:13:030:13:04

Time for our kids to get stuck in and find out.

0:13:060:13:10

The field has to be ploughed,

0:13:130:13:15

but with no machinery, it's got to be done by hand.

0:13:150:13:18

Come on, Charles.

0:13:180:13:20

Imagine how that boy has to do it every single day

0:13:240:13:26

for like a hour on his own and we're just helping out, so...

0:13:260:13:31

I'll try and work as quickly and efficiently as I can.

0:13:310:13:35

We have to do so much for like not even that much food

0:13:400:13:44

and it's like more effort than what you get in return.

0:13:440:13:48

It's really difficult.

0:13:480:13:51

But, I mean, if they can do it then we can like give it a go.

0:13:510:13:55

Back home in Yorkshire, Raina is just as tenacious.

0:14:050:14:09

I'd describe myself as quite determined and motivated because

0:14:090:14:14

I don't give up easily and I like to keep going and get the job done.

0:14:140:14:18

This is a girl that likes to keep herself busy.

0:14:180:14:21

In my spare time I do netball, football, hockey, rugby,

0:14:210:14:26

ice skating, swimming, dancing, singing and acting...and that's it.

0:14:260:14:32

Wow!

0:14:320:14:33

But even Raina hasn't been able to keep up with the tough job

0:14:330:14:38

of tending the rice paddy.

0:14:380:14:39

Every time my finger went across it it rubbed

0:14:390:14:42

so it took the skin off and now it's sort of stinging.

0:14:420:14:46

All of the team are finding that their time in Madagascar

0:14:460:14:49

is harder than they expected.

0:14:490:14:50

It's so thick mud and the heat makes it like ten times worse.

0:14:500:14:54

But the hard work's not over. Back in the village, Hery's kids

0:14:560:15:01

have to help their parents by preparing the raw rice husks

0:15:010:15:04

they've picked from the field to be ready for cooking.

0:15:040:15:07

There are no convenient supermarkets round here.

0:15:070:15:11

So we're watching people pound the rice and then once they've

0:15:140:15:17

finished pounding the rice, they put it on to a metal plate

0:15:170:15:21

and search for stones and anything dirty

0:15:210:15:23

and then she'll put it back into the pot

0:15:230:15:25

to pound and pound and pound until she just gets white rice on its own.

0:15:250:15:29

Pounding the rice isn't as easy as it looks,

0:15:290:15:32

but if Hery's kids don't do it, there'd be no food to eat.

0:15:320:15:36

Okechukwu's having a go at pounding the rice but he's spilt most of it.

0:15:430:15:49

Compared to this, we've got an easy life.

0:15:490:15:51

Where they've got chores to do the rice,

0:15:510:15:54

we don't have chores as hard as that.

0:15:540:15:57

But despite this, Hery's kids still love to have fun, and they want to

0:15:570:16:02

make sure that's the lasting memory the team have of their village.

0:16:020:16:05

The two daughters have done a dance for us, just to say hello and that,

0:16:080:16:13

just to please us, just for a bit of fun.

0:16:130:16:16

It's quite funny.

0:16:160:16:18

-Are you going to join in?

-I'll pass.

0:16:180:16:21

She's such a good dancer and there's absolutely no way

0:16:220:16:25

I could match her, especially in these wellies.

0:16:250:16:29

But it seems that Okechukwu has brought his dancing boots with him.

0:16:290:16:34

LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

0:16:340:16:38

I think I might go and join him.

0:16:390:16:42

Oh, yeah!

0:16:510:16:53

LAUGHTER

0:16:530:16:56

The team have realised that maybe these kids are just like them,

0:16:590:17:03

just a little bit better at dancing.

0:17:030:17:06

I'm not as good as him.

0:17:060:17:07

That was so much fun.

0:17:070:17:09

Didn't even know your hips moved like that. That was impressive!

0:17:090:17:12

-He's still going, man.

-He was like, "Yay, go for it!"

0:17:120:17:15

But it's making them more confused than ever.

0:17:150:17:19

Back at camp, Henry's starting to realise that their mission here

0:17:190:17:23

isn't going to be simple.

0:17:230:17:24

The problem is you can either save the rainforest and the lemurs

0:17:240:17:29

or save the people, you have to make the right balance.

0:17:290:17:33

Cos they need all the trees, they need to cut it down and things

0:17:330:17:36

so that they can grow their own food, so that they can survive.

0:17:360:17:40

But in doing so, that endangers the forests and the lemurs.

0:17:400:17:43

But if we try and save one, the other will have a hard time of it.

0:17:430:17:49

It is all quite complicated, yeah.

0:17:490:17:52

-Night, guys.

-Good night!

0:17:520:17:54

With the odds so stacked against the lemurs,

0:17:580:18:01

the team have decided that they need to do something practical to help,

0:18:010:18:05

and as there's a lemur in the forest with a missing collar,

0:18:050:18:08

there's a real opportunity to make a difference.

0:18:080:18:10

They're joining back up with the conservation team,

0:18:100:18:12

and lemur expert Suzie has a vital role for them.

0:18:120:18:17

OK, so what we're going to do today is the dart team is going to

0:18:170:18:21

dart some lemurs, we're going to collar them with radio collars

0:18:210:18:24

so we're able to track these animals.

0:18:240:18:27

Will we get to hold the lemurs?

0:18:270:18:29

Yes, we're going to have to all put gloves on.

0:18:290:18:32

While the specialised darting team go off to catch the lemurs,

0:18:320:18:36

the kids stay in camp, and it gives them a chance to

0:18:360:18:39

think about getting close to one of the world's rarest primates.

0:18:390:18:42

-What do you think we're going to be doing?

-Collaring it.

0:18:420:18:45

-Yeah, we're putting a collar on it.

-Measuring it.

0:18:450:18:48

I can't believe that I'm going to get that close to a lemur

0:18:480:18:51

and be able to... It's a wonderful opportunity.

0:18:510:18:55

It's really exciting,

0:18:550:18:56

but I'm quite nervous cos I've never seen a lemur up close,

0:18:560:18:59

but I think it's going to be really exciting.

0:18:590:19:02

VOICES ON RADIO

0:19:020:19:04

We know the lemurs are coming so we're getting ready,

0:19:080:19:11

putting gloves on so we're ready when they come.

0:19:110:19:13

-Give us a two-minute warning.

-Gloving up.

0:19:130:19:16

Oh, here they come, here they come!

0:19:160:19:18

I see it, I see it! Aw, that is the cutest thing!

0:19:180:19:21

That is the cutest thing in the world.

0:19:210:19:25

First up is Raina's team.

0:19:250:19:27

It's looking at me!

0:19:270:19:28

This dazzling creature is a black-and-white ruffed lemur.

0:19:280:19:31

-Look at it breathing, look.

-Yep.

0:19:310:19:35

It looks like a toy - a cuddly toy.

0:19:350:19:39

It doesn't look real.

0:19:390:19:41

The lemur's sedated, so Suzie can check the radio collars,

0:19:410:19:45

and it may look strange seeing them like this,

0:19:450:19:47

but it's vital for collecting information

0:19:470:19:49

that might help save the species from extinction.

0:19:490:19:52

Wow!

0:19:520:19:54

And Charlie's team soon get their chance too...

0:19:540:19:57

Oh, God, we've got one.

0:19:570:19:58

..with this greater bamboo lemur that their guide Hery has darted.

0:19:580:20:03

Unfortunately, it's not the one with the missing collar,

0:20:030:20:06

but she still needs a check over.

0:20:060:20:08

It looks like you, Charlie.

0:20:080:20:09

When we've seen them, they've been up trees,

0:20:150:20:17

it seems a bit surreal to see one on a table.

0:20:170:20:21

It's interesting though.

0:20:210:20:23

First up, they need to check and replace the radio collar.

0:20:240:20:29

This is the old collar and it's all frayed like this

0:20:310:20:35

because some of the other lemurs have groomed the collar.

0:20:350:20:39

It's no wonder they're nibbling the collars away - look at those teeth!

0:20:390:20:43

Oh my gosh! Those teeth are impressive.

0:20:430:20:45

You see these...

0:20:450:20:47

Lemurs have this, the front teeth are fused together

0:20:470:20:50

and that is for grooming.

0:20:500:20:52

This wondrous lemur is unusual amongst primates.

0:20:550:20:59

Females don't carry their babies like most other lemurs do,

0:20:590:21:02

but leave them in nests made of leaves and twigs.

0:21:020:21:06

They're vegetarians, and are brilliant at spreading seeds

0:21:060:21:08

and pollen across the rainforest,

0:21:080:21:10

helping to grow the next generation of trees.

0:21:100:21:13

But sadly the lemurs live in habitats that are

0:21:130:21:16

highly desirable sources of wood for local populations

0:21:160:21:20

and that means these beautiful critters

0:21:200:21:23

are now seriously endangered.

0:21:230:21:25

With the radio collar back on,

0:21:250:21:28

hopefully this little fellow will be safe in the forest.

0:21:280:21:31

Feel their thick fur.

0:21:310:21:32

It's soon really clear why it's so important that Suzie

0:21:320:21:36

and her team are able to track these lemurs.

0:21:360:21:39

So we know that she's had this bad eye for some time,

0:21:390:21:43

because they monitor the lemurs and they said this is

0:21:430:21:48

an old injury from her fighting with other bamboo lemurs.

0:21:480:21:52

Without monitoring, an injury like this might mean the lemur

0:21:520:21:56

wouldn't survive.

0:21:560:21:57

-It feels so soft.

-Oh, look, she's awake.

-She's not.

0:21:570:22:00

When there are less than 500 left in the whole world,

0:22:000:22:03

that would be a disaster.

0:22:030:22:04

After the lemurs are weighed...

0:22:070:22:09

3,570.

0:22:090:22:11

..and the last of the data is recorded...

0:22:110:22:14

Look how big his tail is.

0:22:140:22:16

..it's time to release them back into the jungle.

0:22:160:22:19

But first, both teams are getting an incredibly special treat.

0:22:190:22:23

How about you, Eilidh?

0:22:230:22:25

OK, so we want to kind of hold her...

0:22:250:22:27

And you can feel her ribs moving as she breathes.

0:22:300:22:34

I never thought that I would get to be this close

0:22:350:22:39

to one of the most endangered primates in the world.

0:22:390:22:41

It's really bad that these guys are like critically endangered

0:22:480:22:51

cos it's...it's good for lots of people to see them

0:22:510:22:54

like we've seen them cos they're amazing creatures.

0:22:540:22:57

I can't stop smiling.

0:23:000:23:01

Aw, she's hugging you!

0:23:060:23:08

-That is cute.

-Have you ever been hugged by a lemur before?

0:23:080:23:11

Can't say as I have.

0:23:110:23:13

With the cuddles done, it's time to release the lemurs,

0:23:130:23:17

but there's an urgent radio call from the dart team.

0:23:170:23:20

They've found a lemur without a collar.

0:23:200:23:23

But it does have an identity chip implanted under its skin.

0:23:230:23:26

473...44761J4.

0:23:260:23:31

Charlie's got his suspicions about this lemur's origin.

0:23:310:23:35

I was just thinking, this one hasn't got a collar on it so that suggests

0:23:350:23:39

that it hasn't been caught before, they're still being chipped

0:23:390:23:42

but we found the collar

0:23:420:23:43

and it had been like ripped off so I just thought,

0:23:430:23:47

you know, it adds up that this could be the one that it came from.

0:23:470:23:51

Re-collaring the lemur is brilliant for the conservationists,

0:23:510:23:54

as they can now keep an eye on him

0:23:540:23:56

and it's great for our team to have left a lasting legacy.

0:23:560:24:00

Good job, guys.

0:24:000:24:02

So now we're just going back.

0:24:060:24:08

Once they've recovered from the drugs we'll go back and release them

0:24:080:24:12

back into the tree they were shot from.

0:24:120:24:14

This is what it's all about.

0:24:170:24:19

These majestic animals are meant to be in the wild,

0:24:190:24:22

and it's quite a moment for everyone.

0:24:220:24:24

Aw!

0:24:330:24:34

Bye!

0:24:400:24:41

-He's giving him the evils.

-It is, isn't it?

0:24:410:24:44

-Wow.

-Aw!

0:24:510:24:53

Whoa!

0:24:560:24:57

Until next time.

0:24:580:24:59

He's going to poo!

0:25:020:25:04

Look, there's another one.

0:25:040:25:06

Oh, yeah, I can see it.

0:25:060:25:08

Ah, this is so cute.

0:25:080:25:09

He's making some strange noises.

0:25:110:25:14

You have to look, there's one coming from there.

0:25:140:25:18

The re-collared bamboo lemur is back where he belongs,

0:25:200:25:23

and he'll help the conservationists in their fight

0:25:230:25:26

to save the rainforests.

0:25:260:25:29

-Is he just getting his bearings and then he goes off?

-Mm-hm.

0:25:330:25:38

To see the lemur that we've tagged and everything,

0:25:380:25:40

run off back to its natural habitat is really cool.

0:25:400:25:44

Bye, lemurs.

0:25:440:25:46

It's been an inspiring few days for the team,

0:25:520:25:54

and as night falls across Madagascar,

0:25:540:25:56

they're determined to find a way to save the magnificent rainforest.

0:25:560:26:01

It's going to be a really, really difficult problem to sort out

0:26:010:26:04

but we have to try.

0:26:040:26:06

But I think we need to, like, tell them to replant them and things.

0:26:060:26:10

I think that is the solution, actually.

0:26:100:26:12

-Like you was saying, just take one tree, add another.

-I think it is.

0:26:120:26:15

But that's what they don't, like, realise or know at the moment.

0:26:150:26:19

That's just what we need to keep saying.

0:26:190:26:21

It's hard, though, cos that's like their way of life

0:26:210:26:25

and at the same time we can't just, you know, show in over here

0:26:250:26:29

and say, "Don't chop down that, don't do this."

0:26:290:26:33

You can't just go up to people and say to them,

0:26:330:26:35

"You're doing this all wrong, you've got to do it this way,"

0:26:350:26:38

and not explain why. Like in the schools, teaching them

0:26:380:26:41

because in the future they'll think twice before they destroy something.

0:26:410:26:46

Those kids, they're the future generation of Madagascar

0:26:460:26:50

and if we teach this to them, they'll teach it to their kids

0:26:500:26:54

and soon the entire population of this entire country

0:26:540:26:58

will be thinking, you know,

0:26:580:27:00

"We've got to look after this, we can't let our country be destroyed."

0:27:000:27:04

Next time on Mission Madagascar...

0:27:070:27:09

It's a lemur...in disguise!

0:27:090:27:12

The adventurers are on the hunt for bats.

0:27:120:27:15

Oh, wow!

0:27:150:27:16

There's tension in the team.

0:27:160:27:18

ALL TALK AT ONCE

0:27:180:27:20

No, I'm just putting this bit in first.

0:27:200:27:22

And after shocking news, things will never be the same.

0:27:240:27:27

Really sad cos we've got to say bye.

0:27:270:27:29

-ALL:

-Ohhhhhhh, Madagascar!
