This is Madagascar, it's a vast island in the Indian Ocean | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
off the east coast of Africa. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:12
Incredibly, 80% of the wildlife here exists nowhere else on Earth. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
But it's a paradise under threat. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
So I've sent eight ordinary kids from the UK... | 0:00:30 | 0:00:36
..to have the deadly adventure of their lives. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Whoo! Hoo-hoo. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
They'll face the toughest challenges... | 0:00:45 | 0:00:53
..and discover for themselves how to save this lost world... | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
before it's too late. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Last time on Deadly Mission Madagascar, the team's first | 0:01:36 | 0:01:41
mission started with a bang, or should we say a cuddle. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
Have you ever been hugged by a lemur before? | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
I can't say that I have. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
But they soon dug themselves into a whole heap of pain... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
It actually peels all your skin off and it's hurting now. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
..and realised the answer to Madagascar's problems is | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
far from easy. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
The problem is, you can either save the rainforest and the lemurs | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
or save the people and you have to make the right balance. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
The team are still in Kianjavato in the southeast of the island. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:15
It's a small patch of jungle bordered by chopped | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
down areas of forest. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
The basic camp they're staying in is surrounded by wildlife, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
unfortunately that includes nibbly mosquitoes. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
I've got one on my cheek here, and then I've got loads on my legs. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
Oh, it's awful. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
I got bitten on there. It's itching! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
But, itch or no itch, they've got a job to do. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
The team have decided that educating the next | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
generation of kids about the forest might be the answer to fixing | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
Madagascar's problems, so Suzy from Conservation Fusion has | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
offered to take them to a local school. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
The kids here have started learning about the importance | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
of the rainforest, and it's already having a positive effect. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
Here in Kianjavato, conservation or the protecting of the forest | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
and the lemurs has changed the lives of... | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
of many of the people that live here. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
And the best bit is that the kids get to have fun | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
while they're learning about conservation. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
Bamboo lemur! Whoo-oo! | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
CHILDREN SING | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Next door, seeing the children's enthusiasm for school is | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
an eye-opener for the team. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
You take it for granted, yeah, but when you see it like this, | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
it shows how lucky we are to go to school every day. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
They all seem really grateful that they're, like, here | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
and, like, really happy and smiley. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
Coming on this trip has made me realise, like, how much, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
how much we have and how much they don't have. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
And Henry can see that it's this poverty that's made saving | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
the forest so difficult. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
I think the main problem is it's hard for families to provide | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
enough food for themselves and have enough money, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
while preserving the forest at the same time, cos they need... | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
they get their money by cutting down the trees and making | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
bamboo houses, it's how they live, they have to live off the forest. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
Henry's right, money's tight in Madagascar, | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
this school's been on strike for the last few months, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
and the kids have missed terms worth of conservation lessons. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
Like, when we have a strike back at home, we're like, "Yes, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
"whoa, teachers!" and we take school just, like, for granted, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
we just go to school cos we have to, not that we really want to. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
All these people here would love to be in a position like me, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
they'll give their everything just for that little | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
bit of education to get a job when they're older. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
I feel really privileged to be here. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
The team had a plan to save Madagascar's forest | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
by educating children about conservation, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
but it's clear that poverty can make this really difficult. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
If they can find a way for people to value the wildlife | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
they might find a solution. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
Today, they're going back to the forest to see some of the most | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
remarkable critters this island has to offer, and a species | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
that could be an answer to some of Madagascar's problems. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
Bats! | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22 | |
Bats are incredible creatures, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
they're the only mammal that can truly fly. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Many bats use something called echolocation to | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
find their way around and to locate their prey. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
They make high pitched noises that you or | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
I can't hear, which bounce off the prey | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
and then they can figure out exactly where it is and swoop in to grab it. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:47
And there's one unique type of insect-eating bat | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
the team are here to see. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
We're on our way to try and find some sucker-footed bats. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
They have these suckers on the end of their toes and their thumbs which | 0:06:00 | 0:06:08
Hopefully, we'll be successful. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Just hold onto that one, that's a strong one. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
The trouble for Gwen and the team is that the bats live | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
predominately in ravenala trees, and in the last few decades, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
90% of those have been chopped down through deforestation. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
Is that the tree? | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
MAN: Don't know, shall we go and find out? | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
Yeah, I think that's the tree down there. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
So it's taken a tough hour of hiking just to find | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
the tree where the bats are roosting. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
This versatile tree is only found in Madagascar, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
and it's also known as a traveller's palm. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
It serves as home and kitchen to many critters. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
It's a particular favourite food source for ruffed lemurs, | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
who, in return, spread the seeds and pollen through the forest. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:02
But probably the weirdest creature to use it comes out at night, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
the aye-aye. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
They love the sticky nectar that drips off the ravenala's | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
spiky flowers. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:13
But ravenala trees are also extremely tall, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
and the bats live right at the top. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
Oh! Wow! | 0:07:24 | 0:07:25
How's he do that? | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
Luckily, Madagascar's answer to Tarzan has come along to help. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
He's a lemur, in disguise. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
It's scary up there. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Look how fast he's up that tree! | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
Do not try this at home. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
Lekely's got years of experience, but it's still super dangerous! | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
He's throwing old leaves out of the tree. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
I think he's not holding onto anything, | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
he's holding on with his knees. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
The conservationists have been monitoring the bat population, | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
today they're going to be bringing some back to their HQ to | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
check on their health. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
They live wrapped up in the palm leaves, so the leaf is coming too. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:06
How clever is that?! | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
Must be quite heavy. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
To get the bats down from the tree, they're going in this bag to | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
keep them calm. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
Oh, the bats are coming down! | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
It may look a bit uncomfortable for the bats, but don't worry, | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
they're safe and secure. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
It's a less comfortable descent for Lekely. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
Wow! Oh, that must burn. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
You'd have really tough feet from this. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
Oooh! | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34 | |
Oooh! | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38 | |
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
The team are going to examine the bats later, and are hoping that | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
they can play a vital and surprising role in helping Madagascar's people. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:49
If they conserve the trees and the bats, for a start they'd have | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
less mosquitoes because the bats... one of their favourites to... | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
things to eat is mosquitoes and that means there'd be less risk of having | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
malaria and other mosquito-related diseases around the area. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
Malaria is a deadly parasite that's spread | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
by the bite of infected mosquitoes. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
It kills a million people in the developing world every year. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
There's no cure and the drugs to prevent catching it are too | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
expensive for the average Madagascan person. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
It's a simple equation - more bats should mean less mosquitoes, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
which could mean less malaria. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
But Gwen can see that the local families here have a more | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
immediate need. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:37
The trees are important to the local people, cos they use them to build | 0:09:37 | 0:09:46
It's this battle between humans | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
and wildlife that they keep coming back to. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
So the team have decided to send Charlie and Okechuku to visit | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
the local village, to see how people use the trees. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:02
and he's invited them to his house. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:07
Home is a small wooden house he shares with his grandmother. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
It borders the rainforest | 0:10:14 | 0:10:15
and like everyone else here, they rely on the trees to survive. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:19
Fabrice, what's your house made of? | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
SPEAKS MALAGASY | 0:10:21 | 0:10:22
Ravenala trees. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
Do you know how many ravenala trees it takes to build this room? | 0:10:25 | 0:10:30
Around 300...just for the kitchen. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
All that wood, and the house still doesn't give him protection from | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
malaria. He sleeps under a mosquito net to avoid getting bitten. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
Fabrice, did you draw all of this? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
Yes. You're a really good drawer. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
Yeah, you're really good. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
Fabrice's artwork is a reminder of how hard life can be here. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:57
He lives in this two-room house with his grandmother, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
and is busier than the average teenager. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
Have you always went to school, Fabrice, or is it only recently? | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
SPEAKS MALAGASY | 0:11:27 | 0:11:28
How old are you now? | 0:11:33 | 0:11:34
SPEAKS MALAGASY | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
Same as us. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
He's younger than me. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
They may be the same age, but life in the UK is very different | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
for a kid like Charlie. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
Oh, shut up, get that camera out of my face, yeah? | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
He's lucky enough to have his own private den. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:12
But his first love is animals. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
This is our oldest one. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
Madagascar's problems. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:28
what you're doing is harming other places and countries and animals, | 0:12:28 | 0:12:40
strike for the last three months, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
so he hasn't been able to learn anything. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
When the teachers had a strike, how did you feel? | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
SPEAKS MALAGASY | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
I was really sad. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
What do you want to do when you're older? | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
SPEAKS MALAGASY | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
He wants to be a doctor. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
The team are starting to realise it's not just the wildlife in | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
Madagascar that has a tough time of it. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
Poverty is everywhere. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
Most of the rivers we've seen have been polluted and brown | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
and it's not nice and people have been washing in them. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
And Henry, in particular, is finding this side of the trip | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
really difficult. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
I was a bit shocked by the fact that the villages were so poor. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
I didn't expect them to be that poor, you know, villages just | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
made out of bits of bamboo and it is quite shocking to think about. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
so this trip is only going to get more difficult for Henry. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
Other members of the team are getting inspiration, though, | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
from being in such a contrasting and challenging place. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
Overall, the school has been my favourite part of the whole trip | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
cos it really did, like, we really felt like we was making an impact. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
Seeing the kids and what they do is just, it's just amazing | 0:13:55 | 0:14:00
and it just shows, although again they haven't got much money, | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
they're really bright kids and they really, like, make an effort | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
like there's all posters on the wall saying, erm, like, "Clean water, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
"malaria," and it just shows that, and they understand it all. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:15
But despite that understanding, the wildlife is still disappearing. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:19
They need action, fast. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
Back in the forest, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
the team are with the bat conservation group again. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
Hello! ALL: Hello! | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
They're checking and tagging the sucker-footed bats they got from | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
the precious ravenala tree. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
Henry and Gwen are finding out the role these bats are playing | 0:14:40 | 0:14:44
in saving the forest. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
It's the cutest thing. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
Thank you. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:52
It's really tiny, so small, super light, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
it feels like there's nothing in there. | 0:14:56 | 0:15:03
they really are precious cargo. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
These bats help keep mosquito numbers down. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
I've got five and you've got... | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
One...two...three...four. I've got four. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
That's nine bats from just one palm leaf. That's some cramped living! | 0:15:15 | 0:15:20
These bats have a cool feature, which gives them their name. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
CONSERVATIONIST: So, you can see the most amazing feature of this | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
bat is the pads here and this allows them to attach to the leaf, | 0:15:28 | 0:15:33
both in the wrist and the feet, so they produce a sticky substance. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:40
It feels a bit like, you know, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:41
when you get those toys that you like stick at the window | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
and then it flops down, it feels a bit like that, sticky. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
Yeah, quite squishy. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
It's also nice to feel here... | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
Oh, it's nice, that is very good. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:57
The first job is to weigh and measure them to check | 0:15:57 | 0:15:59
if they're healthy. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
28.8. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04 | |
10, 11, 12. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
I think that's about 12?. Yeah. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:18
weigh it is like this, but don't try this with your pets, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
these scientists are experts... | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
and there's a good reason they're | 0:16:25 | 0:16:26
doing this, these little guys have got an important mission. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
Why do you need to weigh them? | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
We are going to select the individual that weighs the most, | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
so that it would be able to fly with the tag attached to its back. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:43
see where the bats go and what they do, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
which could help save them from extinction. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
It's important to make people aware that they are not these evil | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
creatures that are going to suck their blood, | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
they're really not, anyhow. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Bats get a bad reputation for being monsters from horror movies, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
but these sucker-footed bats are as harmless as they come. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:10
They're one of the only bats that hang upright. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
And they love eating insects like moths and mosquitoes. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
But people in Madagascar don't realise this about bats, | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
and their habitat's disappearing fast. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
So, the conservationists have had to step in to help. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
The whole team want to get close to the bats and it's Jamie | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
and Yoran's turn. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
So what are we doing? | 0:17:36 | 0:17:37
So now we have selected the biggest, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
healthiest bats, then we want to attach some radio tags to them. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
But how do you put a radio transmitter on something that | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
only weighs the same as a pencil? | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
With a bit a bit of glue and a pair of scissors, it seems. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
It is non-toxic. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
It's important to get accurate information with the transmitters. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
So each radio tag has its own ID, | 0:17:58 | 0:18:03
like 1-46 and 1-42, | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
so this will allow us to monitor them when we, the movements | 0:18:05 | 0:18:09
of the bat throughout the night, and know which one is which. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
We've just cut the bat's fur and now we put this glue on | 0:18:12 | 0:18:18
and it's on, like, the thin layer of fur that he still has left and | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
that helps to, erm, when you put the radio on it helps it stick. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:28
And we can put the finger... | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
The back's really soft, but their wings are quite bony. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
It's really cool and you can feel its heart beat. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
It's going pretty fast. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
See how it's, yeah, so we have radio-tagged bats. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:49
They'll release the bats later, with their new tags. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
This will enable us to, like, monitor the behaviour, how, just how they're | 0:18:52 | 0:18:58
doing, everything so then we can, we know how to conserve them better. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
Thank you. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
And with the benefits to the human population, | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
they really are worth saving. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
Back at camp, Yoran's still feeling blown away by the little | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
winged wonders. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
That was amazing, it's just amazing to hear their heart beat and, | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
like, help them out and look at such an amazing creature up close, like, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
something I've never done before and might never get to do again. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:25
I didn't have a clue what a sucker-footed bat was, not one clue. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
If someone said, "What's a sucker-footed bat?" | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
I would have gone a bat that's got suckers on its foot, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
as a guess, just taking that from their name. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
But I learned so much about them, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
like their thumbs and where they live in the ravenala trees. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
I didn't even know what a ravenala tree was before I came here, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
but now I've definitely started to appreciate them more. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
And it's that feeling of wonder that the team hope to pass on to | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
the children of this beautiful island. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
Our team can't do anything about the poverty in Madagascar, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
but they can try and inspire the local school children to | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
care about protecting its wildlife. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
And they're going to do it using a simple idea | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
they think everyone will really love. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
They've roped in Suzy from Conservation Fusion to help. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:19
We're back at the same school that we came to and we're going to, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
we're painting a mural for all the kids | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
and we're going to include, like, all the animals and incorporate the | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
biodiversity of this amazing place, which should be pretty good. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
And it means that even if the school's on strike, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
the children will have a reminder of their incredible wildlife. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
If people see it here, they'll wonder, "Oh yeah, I know where that, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
"I know where that sort of tree is, so I can, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
"and I can see it up there, so if I go up there maybe I'll see these | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
"animals and I know, now I know where they are so I won't go | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
"and chop down those trees," so it will be really good fun, it's going | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
to take a long time, though, and it's quite hot, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
but it'll be worth it. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:57
It's a hot day, it's the hottest day so far. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
The team are struggling in the heat, | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
and with the whole school watching, the pressure's getting to them. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
HEATED DISCUSSION | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
We have to put a ladder. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:10
Yeah, I know, I'm just putting this bit in first. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
..At the end, cos there's the house there where you | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
Yeah, I know I'm just putting this bit in for now, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
so that I know, like, where everything comes from. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
It's needs to branch out at least to that bin. I know. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
Well what's the point in doing it then? | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
Stop the arguments just for painting! | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
It's all going wrong, but it'll be fine, I think, well, I hope. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:35
Yeah, they just need a ladder and a pen. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
And once they get going, there's no stopping them. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Yoran's even running his own class. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
That one? Antana. Antana, cool. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
While we're here, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
I'm trying to learn a little bit of Madagascan from, Malagasy, from | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
the kids here, as well as trying to teach 'em a little bit of English. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:03
It's going all right, I think they're probably learning quicker | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
than I am, but we're getting there, we're getting there. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
They certainly are, and Suzy's thrilled. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:14
I think it's fantastic and I think it's really great to really want | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
to give something back to the people here, and these kids don't get | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
an opportunity to actually even have, like, paintbrushes or markers and so | 0:22:21 | 0:22:33
It's incredible what you can achieve with a bit of teamwork, | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
and a lot of love. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:37
Oh, no, it smudged! | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
Yeah, it smudged bad. Big time! | 0:22:41 | 0:22:50
So will the mural, hopefully inspiring the schoolchildren | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
to protect animals like sucker-footed bats. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
I'm really proud of myself, cos we've achieved quite a big thing, | 0:22:57 | 0:23:04
getting them all involved and every time they look at it that it'll | 0:23:04 | 0:23:11
And that now they know that all those animals on there can be | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
found in there, so they're going to keep that more safe than | 0:23:14 | 0:23:24
The team's time in Kianjavato is almost at an end, but before | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
they leave there's one more thing to do - release the tagged bats. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:40
It feels amazing, it's all wrinkly, but you can really | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
feel like all the bones and everything and it's vibrating and | 0:23:44 | 0:23:53
One, two, three. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
I can't do this. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
Come on, go fly about! | 0:24:10 | 0:24:11
THEY LAUGH | 0:24:11 | 0:24:16
That was amazing. Thank you so much. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
Thank you. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
Thank you. Thanks very much, that was really cool. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
It was amazing. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
It's unbelievable, cos they were, like, you know, like, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
that big and then we eventually | 0:24:28 | 0:24:29
let go, like, the wings just made the bat look massive and I've never | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
saw or held one that close and it's just, like, breathtaking. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:37
And hopefully those transmitters will feed back vital | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
information to protect the bats. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
It's been quite a week for the team. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
Their time here in Kianjavato has been hugely successful. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
They've learnt a lot, | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
and really gelled as a team to move their mission forward. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
But there's been tough times, too... | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
and Henry, in particular, has been | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
finding his time here really hard, because of the poverty they've seen. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
I was a bit shocked by the fact that the villages were so poor, | 0:25:06 | 0:25:10
I didn't expect them to be that poor. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
So, back at camp, Henry's come to a brave decision. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
Guys, you have to listen. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
Guys, shut up! | 0:25:24 | 0:25:25
I'm not staying. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
Oh! | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29 | |
You're out of it? | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
You all right, OK? | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
Come on, mate. Stay strong. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
It's been good though, ain't it, when you've been here, | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
so think of it like that. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
Are you sure you want to go? Yes. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
Sure? | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45 | |
I'll miss you. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:46
As dawn breaks, the team are still trying to take in the news | 0:25:50 | 0:25:54
that eight have become seven. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
I think the whole group will miss him, | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
cos he's been quite a big part of the group, | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
yeah, but we'll miss him. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:04
But Charlie can understand Henry's decision. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
Yeah, it's pretty sad that Henry's leaving, like, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
but the poverty we've seen here is quite hard to deal with, cos | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
even just driving to base camp here you can, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
you just see it everywhere, but yeah, it's quite upsetting. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:20
Wicked, bro. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:21
Saying goodbye is never easy, especially | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
when you've bonded like the team have. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:28
GENERAL CHATTER | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
Bye, Henry! | 0:26:31 | 0:26:32
Yeah, I'm glad I've come out and done this, it's a good experience | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
and it'll help me travel in the future and be ready for things. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:45
And for the rest of the team, it's time to leave | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
Kianjavato for their next adventure. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
They've made a real impact here, and it's left a mark on them, too. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:01
What are you crying for? | 0:27:01 | 0:27:02
I'm happy and sad at the same time, | 0:27:02 | 0:27:04
yeah, it's happy, cos we've, like, done something good. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
I don't know why I'm crying. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:09
It's sad cos we've got to say bye. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
So, I guess in the next village... | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
Next time on Mission Madagascar... | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
the new boy arrives... | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
The guy there has got a flick a little bit like mine, | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
but mine's better. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:31
..and causes a splash. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:32
Woo! Ha-ha-ha. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:34
And the team go animal crazy. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
They're really close to us, it's amazing. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
Subtitles by Red Bee Media Ltd | 0:27:56 | 0:27:58
On Deadly 60, I've had loads of incredible animal encounters. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
And here's just one of my many favourites. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
This is Deadly 60 Bites! | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
Whoa! | 0:28:13 | 0:28:14 | |
'We're in a bustling market town in Ethiopia | 0:28:19 | 0:28:22
'to have a bizarre but brilliant midnight feast | 0:28:22 | 0:28:25
'with a pack of spotted hyena.' | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
Bouki! | 0:28:29 | 0:28:30
OK, we've got our first shape lumbering out of the darkness now. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:33
Graham, over there. Just here. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:36
Bouki! | 0:28:36 | 0:28:38
Oh, my life! | 0:28:38 | 0:28:39
Er...OK, I wasn't expecting that. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
That was rather quicker than I expected. Kuti! | 0:28:43 | 0:28:47
Juggie! | 0:28:47 | 0:28:48
This is totally freakish. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:53
This goes against everything I've ever learned about spotted hyenas. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:59
This is a totally wild animal. | 0:28:59 | 0:29:01
And this is one of the most feared, | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
in some cases, despised animals in Africa. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:08
STEVE SMIRKS NERVOUSLY | 0:29:08 | 0:29:10
Though hyenas have a reputation for being scavengers, | 0:29:11 | 0:29:15
it is an animal that is without doubt a predator. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
I just can't get used to this at all. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:25
Can you imagine any other situation where you could come nose-to-nose | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
with a predator this powerful... | 0:29:28 | 0:29:32
and not get savaged? | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
He's just got his nose in the trough! | 0:29:37 | 0:29:40
This is a bit much for me, I have to say. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
Amaria! | 0:29:44 | 0:29:47
Spotted hyenas are animals that can drive lions away from their prey, | 0:29:47 | 0:29:52
with one of the strongest jaws in the whole animal kingdom. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:55
Listen to that crunching. | 0:29:57 | 0:30:00
And that sound is why spotted hyenas have to go on the Deadly 60. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:05

Get set, go for the weekend... | 0:30:16 | 0:30:18
Hello! Hello! | 0:30:18 | 0:30:19
And welcome to Sam Mark's Sport Showdown! | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
..with Friday fun and games... | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
Yeah! | 0:30:25 | 0:30:26 | |
Awesome! | 0:30:26 | 0:30:28
..and mischief and mayhem in brand-new All At Sea. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
We need to buy 1,000 eggs. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
Last thing I need is one of your stupid wind-ups. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
Charlie! | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38 |
