This is Madagascar.

0:00:020:00:03

It's a vast island in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa.

0:00:030:00:07

And it's home to some of the most unique and rare creatures

0:00:070:00:10

on the planet.

0:00:100:00:11

Incredibly, 80% of the wildlife here exists nowhere else on earth.

0:00:110:00:15

But it's a paradise under threat.

0:00:190:00:21

So I've sent eight ordinary kids from the UK

0:00:240:00:28

to have the deadly adventure of their lives.

0:00:280:00:30

They'll face the toughest challenges

0:00:310:00:35

and discover for themselves how to save this lost world...

0:00:350:00:38

..before it's too late.

0:00:390:00:40

Their first challenge has come to an end.

0:01:190:01:21

They've seen that once the forest is lost, the animals disappear too.

0:01:230:01:27

Can they ever come back if the forest is allowed to regrow?

0:01:290:01:32

And as they move to their next location,

0:01:340:01:36

to face their next set of challenges,

0:01:360:01:38

they're all still reeling from having lost one of the gang.

0:01:380:01:42

This was never going to be easy.

0:01:440:01:46

Bit sad, cos we've got to say bye.

0:01:460:01:48

And there are even harder things to come.

0:01:500:01:52

To get to their next destination,

0:01:550:01:57

where their new challenge awaits, is going to take teamwork.

0:01:570:02:00

A 12 kilometre journey down a twisting river

0:02:020:02:05

that will lead them into the heart

0:02:050:02:07

of one of Madagascar's most beautiful rainforests.

0:02:070:02:10

But this challenge is already being seen as a competition.

0:02:110:02:15

It's going to get a bit competitive even though it's not a race.

0:02:150:02:18

But I'm really looking forward to spotting some wildlife

0:02:180:02:21

as we go through the rainforest.

0:02:210:02:23

Gwen's going to get it going and then we'll probably end up racing.

0:02:230:02:26

I've kayaked quite a bit, and canoed.

0:02:260:02:28

And I've also done canoe slalom and stuff like that, so...

0:02:280:02:32

I think we're going to take it quite casual, you know, not go too fast.

0:02:320:02:36

This is just going to be chaos.

0:02:360:02:38

Ah!

0:02:380:02:39

Stop, stop, stop, stop.

0:02:390:02:40

No, we're going into the rapids.

0:02:400:02:43

Yes!

0:02:430:02:45

Have it! Woo!

0:02:450:02:47

Come on! No, you've overdone it. No, Okechukwu! No.

0:02:500:02:53

Ah!

0:02:560:02:57

Ow, that was painful! That hurt.

0:02:570:02:59

They're entering a national park called Ranomafana.

0:03:020:03:05

It's huge, covering an area about the same as 40,000 football pitches.

0:03:090:03:13

And it's home to creatures found nowhere else on the island,

0:03:130:03:17

or, in fact, the world.

0:03:170:03:18

Almost straightaway, they start throwing themselves at the crew.

0:03:200:03:24

Oh! It's a frog. It's only a frog.

0:03:240:03:27

Although some are not as welcome as others.

0:03:270:03:30

Spider!

0:03:300:03:32

These are Darwin's bark spiders.

0:03:360:03:38

They spin massive webs right across the river.

0:03:380:03:40

In fact, they spin the longest spanning webs in the world,

0:03:400:03:44

catching bugs that use the river as a highway.

0:03:440:03:48

But they're not to everyone's taste.

0:03:480:03:50

Ah!

0:03:500:03:52

Come on!

0:03:520:03:53

Don't put that here!

0:03:530:03:56

Ah!

0:03:560:03:58

Someone get it, then!

0:03:580:04:00

It's on his neck!

0:04:000:04:01

'I don't mind spiders, but when I moved it off

0:04:010:04:04

'and it went next to Charlie he screamed like a little girl.'

0:04:040:04:07

Where's it gone?

0:04:070:04:09

It's on my back still.

0:04:090:04:10

'Jumped into the back of the kayak with Jamie and they both sat

0:04:100:04:14

'at the back screaming, while me and Okechukwu had to paddle.'

0:04:140:04:17

I'm doing all the work here, as usual.

0:04:170:04:20

While these sissy boys scream about a spider this big.

0:04:200:04:23

I wasn't screaming!

0:04:230:04:24

Away from all the chaos,

0:04:280:04:29

the girls are captivated by the enchantment of the place.

0:04:290:04:33

I feel like I could be in a movie.

0:04:360:04:37

At the half way point, the guys take a break.

0:04:420:04:45

Just going to sit and wait now until the other guys come.

0:04:450:04:48

-Yeah.

-Wait and laugh.

0:04:480:04:49

No, sit and wait, and then when they get past, we'll point and laugh.

0:04:490:04:52

Don't even talk, please, don't talk, don't laugh. It's not funny. No.

0:04:520:04:56

Tempers on the other boat are close to boiling point.

0:04:560:04:59

No, please, just, please.

0:04:590:05:00

What have you done?

0:05:000:05:01

I said please. Please just don't, don't talk.

0:05:010:05:06

But it's Raina that decides to cool off.

0:05:060:05:08

Yeah!

0:05:100:05:12

Get in quickly, get in, get in!

0:05:160:05:19

Ha-ha-ha!

0:05:190:05:20

Get on, get on!

0:05:260:05:28

Pretty soon the boys get stuck again, though.

0:05:280:05:30

And the girls power on ahead.

0:05:320:05:34

Girl power!

0:05:340:05:36

Woo!

0:05:360:05:37

After five hours of hard kayaking, the end is in sight.

0:05:430:05:46

Yes!

0:05:550:05:57

At last, dry land!

0:05:570:05:59

Well, almost.

0:05:590:06:01

Ha-ha-ha!

0:06:010:06:03

She's done that three times!

0:06:030:06:04

Even the girls who made it look effortless are feeling it.

0:06:060:06:09

Right, I feel like I'm going to die. Aching so bad.

0:06:090:06:12

Yeah, we won, but it's not about the competition. Seriously.

0:06:160:06:19

It wasn't even a competition.

0:06:190:06:20

Seriously, it isn't. I'm not only saying that now.

0:06:200:06:23

But literally it wasn't.

0:06:230:06:24

See, that's why she's not talking now.

0:06:240:06:26

No, honestly, I didn't know I said anything wrong.

0:06:260:06:29

But I really don't care.

0:06:300:06:31

But anyways, it's over, so now we can just forget about.

0:06:310:06:34

Yeah, now we can just be friends.

0:06:340:06:36

It falls to the wettest of them all, Raina, to get them to hug it out.

0:06:360:06:41

Tired, cold and a little grouchy,

0:06:440:06:46

they finally arrive at the Centre ValBio,

0:06:460:06:49

a state-of-the-art research station in the heart of the forest.

0:06:490:06:53

But they're not staying here.

0:06:550:06:57

They have to hike to get to their camp.

0:06:570:06:59

We've just kayaked and canoed for ten miles,

0:07:010:07:03

or something ridiculous like that.

0:07:030:07:05

We're freezing, we're in swimming costumes.

0:07:050:07:08

We just want to have a shower and now they're saying,

0:07:080:07:10

"Oh, yeah, we have to hike to the place where we're staying,"

0:07:100:07:13

and we're all going, "Nooooo!"

0:07:130:07:15

And there's another surprise in store for them.

0:07:160:07:19

A new member of their team has arrived.

0:07:190:07:21

He's got the Justin Bieber hairstyle.

0:07:220:07:24

The guy there has got a flick a little bit like mine,

0:07:240:07:28

but mine's better.

0:07:280:07:29

New boy, Oak, had very little time to prepare.

0:07:290:07:32

Pretty strange, though, to get a phone call one day

0:07:320:07:35

and then be here just a few days later.

0:07:350:07:37

The next day.

0:07:370:07:38

Once together, they're keen to fill Oak in on what he's already missed.

0:07:400:07:45

I love kayaking.

0:07:450:07:46

No, but you didn't want to go kayaking.

0:07:460:07:48

-I love it!

-No, but no.

0:07:480:07:50

At 14, outdoor enthusiast, Oak, is the eldest member of the group.

0:07:510:07:55

I love nature. I'm always outside.

0:07:570:08:00

I do photography most of the time because it's just my passion.

0:08:030:08:08

Perhaps Oak's biggest strength is his fitness.

0:08:080:08:11

I'm good at running, up hills and things.

0:08:110:08:15

I love it.

0:08:150:08:17

I would say I'm very active in the outdoors world.

0:08:180:08:21

And as they make their way to camp,

0:08:230:08:25

Oak's energy levels will certainly come in handy.

0:08:250:08:27

I've never done anything like this, really, like camping outside,

0:08:360:08:39

so it's a new experience for me.

0:08:390:08:41

Oak doesn't seem phased at all.

0:08:410:08:44

I actually quite like it, and I like camping.

0:08:440:08:47

With Oak completely at ease, the team settle in to a place

0:08:470:08:50

that will be their home for the next four days.

0:08:500:08:53

Their first challenge is to find as many animals as they can

0:09:000:09:03

in this beautiful forest.

0:09:030:09:05

This is known as a bio blitz.

0:09:080:09:10

But there's a twist.

0:09:130:09:15

They'll split into two teams.

0:09:190:09:21

Oak's team are heading to a remote area of forest.

0:09:230:09:25

It's some of the most unspoilt rainforest in Madagascar,

0:09:290:09:32

and should be stuffed full of animals.

0:09:320:09:34

Whereas Raina's team are going to

0:09:360:09:38

a completely different patch of forest.

0:09:380:09:40

It might look the same, but it's spent the last 20 years

0:09:410:09:44

recovering from people living off it.

0:09:440:09:46

Question is, which of the teams will find the most animals?

0:09:480:09:51

What your task is to do today is to document and take pictures

0:09:530:09:57

of as many animals as you can see.

0:09:570:10:00

And not just mammals.

0:10:000:10:01

Bugs, snakes, reptiles.

0:10:010:10:04

Aliens.

0:10:040:10:05

Aliens, everything.

0:10:050:10:07

Every single thing you see,

0:10:070:10:08

we want you to take pictures of it and make a note of what it is.

0:10:080:10:11

What about spiders, Doug?

0:10:110:10:12

Spiders, tons of spiders.

0:10:120:10:14

I want to find a pygmy chameleon.

0:10:140:10:16

A bio blitz is a simple way to check the health of a forest.

0:10:180:10:22

So, in theory, there should be fewer animals in Raina's area.

0:10:220:10:26

But surprisingly, helped by Loret, the local guide,

0:10:260:10:29

it's not long before they notch up their first animal.

0:10:290:10:33

-Here.

-Butterfly.

0:10:330:10:34

And the photos are collected

0:10:350:10:37

for comparison with the other team later.

0:10:370:10:39

Bugs.

0:10:390:10:40

Oh, spider.

0:10:400:10:41

Oh, a worm.

0:10:430:10:44

I'll just call it a bug.

0:10:440:10:46

I'll change it to insect.

0:10:460:10:47

Crayfish.

0:10:490:10:50

Yeah.

0:10:500:10:51

At the moment, I've just written down frog under amphibians,

0:10:520:10:57

but I'm not sure what type of frog it is,

0:10:570:10:59

so we've taken pictures and we're going to find out later.

0:10:590:11:02

Meanwhile, the other team are halfway up the mountain,

0:11:060:11:10

and getting rather soggy.

0:11:100:11:11

I think we look quite cool.

0:11:110:11:14

Well, I like it.

0:11:140:11:15

Nevertheless, they're still spotting animals.

0:11:170:11:20

Oak and local guide Emile

0:11:200:11:21

have just found

0:11:210:11:22

their first reptile of the day,

0:11:220:11:24

a nose-horned chameleon.

0:11:240:11:26

So the chameleon's using its tail to hold on whilst it's...

0:11:260:11:28

Yes.

0:11:280:11:29

-Wow.

-Look at this.

0:11:310:11:32

Is he trying to wobble like that?

0:11:320:11:34

-Yeah, he's trying to move up.

-Wow!

0:11:340:11:36

Guys, guys, guys, come over here, there's a sifaka in the tree.

0:11:390:11:42

Come and have a look.

0:11:430:11:45

Can you see the tree right at the back?

0:11:480:11:50

It's hanging off it. Can you see?

0:11:510:11:53

No.

0:11:530:11:54

-Where's Emile? Can you see it?

-Yeah.

0:11:550:11:57

-There.

-Oh, yeah.

0:11:580:12:00

There's another one up here. It's really close.

0:12:010:12:03

He's looking at us, he's coming towards us.

0:12:030:12:05

He's coming down, look, he's coming down.

0:12:050:12:08

OK, he's coming now. He's coming now.

0:12:080:12:10

This family group of lemurs are called Milne Edwards sifakas.

0:12:120:12:16

A great discovery for the kids.

0:12:170:12:19

But then again, this pristine forest is exactly where lemurs like this

0:12:210:12:25

should thrive, as it's full of their natural food.

0:12:250:12:29

And in the protected national park, there's no fear of being hunted.

0:12:290:12:32

But surprisingly,

0:12:400:12:42

lemurs are not restricted to just this kind of forest.

0:12:420:12:45

Even in the recovering forest where Raina's team are, there are lemurs.

0:12:480:12:52

Loads of them. Loads.

0:12:560:12:58

I'm seeing, we've just found some red bellied lemurs,

0:13:010:13:04

and at first we thought there was only two,

0:13:040:13:07

but then we found like a whole pack

0:13:070:13:09

and, whoa, just seen that one jumping.

0:13:090:13:11

And they're really close to us as well, so it's amazing.

0:13:110:13:14

Red bellied lemurs are more common than sifakas,

0:13:200:13:23

but are still only found in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar.

0:13:230:13:26

They feed on fruit, leaves and the occasional millipede.

0:13:280:13:31

Even in the recovering forest, there's enough food to support them.

0:13:400:13:43

It was a really amazing thing to see a lemur this close to you.

0:13:480:13:51

Deeper into the national park,

0:13:550:13:57

the other team are wearily winding their way up the mountain

0:13:570:14:00

through the unspoilt forest.

0:14:000:14:02

They spot another couple of chameleons.

0:14:020:14:05

That's three so far in an hour.

0:14:050:14:07

But it's hard going in the tropical heat.

0:14:080:14:11

I'm hot!

0:14:110:14:12

At the front of the group,

0:14:130:14:14

Oak seems to have more energy than anyone, even the crew.

0:14:140:14:19

Camera's getting heavy.

0:14:190:14:20

Are we there yet?

0:14:210:14:22

I'm strong as an ox.

0:14:250:14:26

WHISTLE

0:14:270:14:29

Emile's spotted something,

0:14:290:14:31

and Oak's the first of the group to try and get a clearer view.

0:14:310:14:34

I've found it, I've found it.

0:14:340:14:36

You see, you see the light.

0:14:390:14:40

So Emile's tracking, talking to a bird.

0:14:420:14:44

Trying to get any answers.

0:14:450:14:47

The gang join in, to help call the bird closer.

0:14:480:14:51

ALL WHISTLE

0:14:510:14:54

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I can see it.

0:15:020:15:04

You have to get exactly there.

0:15:060:15:07

Look, look.

0:15:070:15:08

With everyone looking up, no one's looking where their feet are.

0:15:090:15:13

Do you want me to...?

0:15:150:15:17

It could have been a lot worse.

0:15:190:15:21

Are you OK?

0:15:210:15:22

I was deep in concentration.

0:15:220:15:23

Let's move on.

0:15:250:15:26

In the recovering forest, they're still finding animals.

0:15:280:15:32

The teams are almost neck and neck.

0:15:320:15:34

Leaf tailed gecko is under...

0:15:350:15:36

Reptiles.

0:15:360:15:38

Leaf tailed geckos are unique to Madagascar,

0:15:380:15:40

and absolute masters of camouflage.

0:15:400:15:43

He is like, "I am not animals, I am dead leaves."

0:15:430:15:45

Without Loret, our team would have would walked right past it.

0:15:450:15:49

Especially as right now, all they can think of is food.

0:15:490:15:53

I would love to have a roast, with all three meats

0:15:530:15:56

and some huge Yorkshire.

0:15:560:15:58

They're so hungry,

0:15:580:15:59

they're even starting to see food all around them.

0:15:590:16:02

Looks like an apricot.

0:16:020:16:04

It's obvious they're going to need a quick break

0:16:060:16:09

to get them back on track.

0:16:090:16:10

But Raina's feeling pretty confident.

0:16:100:16:13

I'm excited to compare it to the other team.

0:16:130:16:16

But, all in all, it was a good morning.

0:16:160:16:18

Up in the unspoilt forest,

0:16:210:16:23

Oak and his team get their own chance for a break.

0:16:230:16:26

Welcome to the campsite, everybody!

0:16:260:16:28

Wahey!

0:16:280:16:30

There's just time for a quick snack before they must set up camp.

0:16:300:16:33

Bring it on.

0:16:330:16:35

I'm going to go try and find the toilet because, you know,

0:16:460:16:49

it's quite important.

0:16:490:16:50

Ugh!

0:16:540:16:55

It stinks!

0:16:560:16:57

I think I'd rather hold it in, to be honest.

0:17:020:17:04

Both teams have been really successful.

0:17:090:17:11

But there's one kind of creature that has so far eluded each of them.

0:17:130:17:16

A real Madagascan oddity, the tenrec.

0:17:170:17:21

Tenrecs come in all shapes and sizes.

0:17:250:17:28

There's spiky ones, streaky ones, even underwater ones.

0:17:290:17:33

But even though they look like other animals we're familiar with,

0:17:330:17:36

they're completely unique, and can only be found in Madagascar.

0:17:360:17:39

As tenrecs tend to come out at night, both teams are going to have

0:17:410:17:45

to set some traps if they're going to have any hope of finding one.

0:17:450:17:50

-I've never fished.

-You have not lived, either!

-Never fished.

0:17:500:17:53

Down at the river on the edge of the recovering forest,

0:17:530:17:56

Raina and her team have set their sights high.

0:17:560:17:58

The aquatic or water tenrec is one of the hardest-to-find animals

0:18:000:18:04

in Madagascar.

0:18:040:18:05

I thought we were looking for normal tenrecs,

0:18:050:18:07

but a water tenrec sounds much cooler.

0:18:070:18:11

And amazingly, they've never been filmed by the BBC before.

0:18:110:18:14

In order to set the traps, they have to get down to the water's edge.

0:18:150:18:19

This is slightly tricky terrain.

0:18:190:18:21

More than slightly.

0:18:210:18:22

That is some crayfish!

0:18:220:18:24

I've got a crayfish in my hand.

0:18:240:18:26

This is one of the baits we're using to catch the water tenrec.

0:18:260:18:29

It's not actually that wriggly, I thought it'd be jumping around,

0:18:290:18:33

but it's fine.

0:18:330:18:34

They usually fish for food in shallow waters,

0:18:350:18:39

and he's just blocked that way off so they can't get past it,

0:18:390:18:42

so it'll probably go straight into the trap, so we can get it out.

0:18:420:18:45

They're putting out two traps to maximise their chances

0:18:470:18:50

of catching the aquatic animal.

0:18:500:18:52

Raina and Okechukwu are in charge of the first.

0:18:520:18:55

Charlie and Gwen, the second.

0:18:550:18:57

We're going now, and we're going back up,

0:18:580:19:01

and then we're going to come back in the morning,

0:19:010:19:04

check the traps, and hopefully we'll have a water tenrec.

0:19:040:19:07

Oak's gang in the unspoilt forest are going to set

0:19:100:19:13

a totally different kind of trap for a very different kind of tenrec.

0:19:130:19:17

On the way, as they hunt for a likely spot,

0:19:200:19:22

they can't seem to stop adding creatures to their bio blitz list.

0:19:220:19:26

This is the silk moth.

0:19:260:19:28

A chameleon, there. Oh, wow!

0:19:290:19:30

Put some welly into it!

0:19:390:19:40

With Emile's local knowledge, they find the perfect place.

0:19:400:19:44

They're building a pit fall trap.

0:19:460:19:47

Well done.

0:19:490:19:51

Thank you.

0:19:520:19:54

I take it all back, macho-man.

0:19:540:19:56

So, we're just putting some soil on the edge of the plastic,

0:19:580:20:04

so that when the animals hit the plastic,

0:20:040:20:07

they can't just go straight under it, they have to go round

0:20:070:20:11

and then they'll hopefully fall in the bucket.

0:20:110:20:14

Job well done!

0:20:140:20:17

And now, all they can do is eat, sleep, and wait until morning.

0:20:170:20:20

Their day starts with a surprise animal visitor.

0:20:300:20:33

A ring tailed mongoose.

0:20:380:20:40

It's beautiful, and he's got like a rusty kind of reddish colour.

0:20:440:20:47

Ring tailed mongoose are found in the east of Madagascar.

0:20:480:20:52

They're always on the move so are a very lucky spot.

0:20:520:20:55

It's another creature for the list.

0:20:570:20:59

Meanwhile, the aquatic tenrec team

0:21:020:21:04

return to their trap site with mixed expectations.

0:21:040:21:07

We just came back to the river where we put the traps in last night.

0:21:070:21:12

And me and Gwen are feeling,

0:21:120:21:13

and Okechukwu, are feeling quite positive that we've found one.

0:21:130:21:17

I think Raina is a bit, you know, not sure, but I'm well excited.

0:21:170:21:21

Raina wades in to check her trap.

0:21:270:21:29

I can't see anything from here.

0:21:320:21:34

It's not looking good.

0:21:350:21:37

The crayfish we used as a bait last night,

0:21:370:21:39

it managed to escape from the actual trap, so I think that's why

0:21:390:21:42

we didn't catch the tenrec, because there was no food inside.

0:21:420:21:46

But there does seem to be a buzz around Charlie and Gwen's trap.

0:21:480:21:52

It's a snake or something.

0:21:520:21:54

It's not a snake, it looks like an otter.

0:21:540:21:56

There's something inside, but they aren't sure what.

0:21:560:21:59

It's a mouse!

0:21:590:22:00

It's not a mouse.

0:22:000:22:02

Up the mountain, the other team head off to check their trap.

0:22:050:22:08

Jamie Rose encounters some wildlife she'd rather not.

0:22:100:22:14

Eurgh, leech, leech, leech, leech! Get it off me!

0:22:140:22:17

Oh, shrew, shrew, something like a shrew in there, definitely.

0:22:230:22:26

That's a tenrec.

0:22:260:22:27

What have you found, guys?

0:22:270:22:29

A tenrec or shrew.

0:22:290:22:31

It's kind of both, really - a striped shrew tenrec.

0:22:310:22:35

Oh, no, it's going, "Where am I?"

0:22:350:22:37

-It is cute but I think we should let it out.

-Yeah.

0:22:370:22:40

And would that be a fully-grown tenrec,

0:22:400:22:42

or would that be particularly small?

0:22:420:22:44

That is the full size of the adult, yes.

0:22:440:22:47

Ahhh!

0:22:510:22:53

What do they eat?

0:22:540:22:56

They eat insects, lots of different kinds of insects.

0:22:560:23:01

Is it biting you? Does it hurt?

0:23:010:23:03

No.

0:23:030:23:04

Ah, tenrec!

0:23:040:23:05

It just remains to take a photo

0:23:060:23:08

and put striped shrew tenrec on their bio blitz list.

0:23:080:23:12

Bye-bye. Bye, tenrec.

0:23:120:23:14

Back down at the river,

0:23:170:23:18

will the other team be able to add a tenrec to their list?

0:23:180:23:22

This is mine and Gwen's trap, the winners' trap.

0:23:230:23:27

Yeah.

0:23:270:23:29

But they're still not quite sure what they've caught.

0:23:290:23:32

Is it a tenrec?

0:23:320:23:34

It looks different.

0:23:360:23:37

Very careful.

0:23:370:23:38

It looks a bit like a mole.

0:23:400:23:41

A rat, a mouse.

0:23:430:23:45

Whatever it is, one thing's for sure, it's a feisty little customer.

0:23:450:23:49

Loret, do you want two gloves on, man?

0:23:490:23:52

He's got it, he's got it.

0:23:520:23:54

It's biting him, it's biting his shirt.

0:23:550:23:58

God, they're strong teeth!

0:24:010:24:02

Does anybody have another glove?

0:24:020:24:04

Aquatic tenrec.

0:24:060:24:08

Phenomenal! It's an aquatic tenrec. All their patience has paid off.

0:24:080:24:12

I was thinking it would be more like an otter,

0:24:120:24:15

but it's actually quite like a shrew.

0:24:150:24:17

It's a bit rat-like.

0:24:170:24:19

Very little's known about these truly surprising animals.

0:24:220:24:25

They don't even know exactly how many there are in the world.

0:24:270:24:30

What we can see is that they're specially adapted

0:24:320:24:35

to life in the river, with webbed feet, strong back legs for swimming,

0:24:350:24:39

and a keeled tail they use like a rudder.

0:24:390:24:42

And don't forget sharp teeth, for cracking open crayfish shells.

0:24:420:24:46

-Shall we put this guy back, then?

-Yeah.

0:24:470:24:49

Yeah!

0:24:560:24:57

To come that close to such a rare animal, yeah, it was pretty wicked.

0:24:590:25:03

But I think that's mission accomplished now.

0:25:030:25:05

ALL: Go, tenrec!

0:25:050:25:08

It's been a remarkably successful 24 hours.

0:25:130:25:16

The gang meet up back at base to count up and identify

0:25:160:25:19

some of their trickier creatures.

0:25:190:25:21

But which team's found the most?

0:25:230:25:25

I think I've found a possibility for our first chameleon.

0:25:270:25:31

Between them, in the two areas of forest,

0:25:310:25:33

they've notched up over 35 species,

0:25:330:25:36

including some of the rarest animals in Madagascar.

0:25:360:25:39

That's brown and that's green.

0:25:390:25:41

Chameleons change colour, Raina!

0:25:410:25:44

Yeah, but that looks nicer than that.

0:25:470:25:50

What's incredible is that Raina's team in the recovering forest

0:25:500:25:54

have discovered slightly more animals.

0:25:540:25:56

It has to be that one, surely.

0:25:560:25:58

A real surprise, because this forest once had people living off it,

0:25:580:26:02

chopping trees, gathering food and hunting.

0:26:020:26:05

One animal they didn't find in their bio blitz is a snake.

0:26:070:26:10

However, John Cadle from the research centre

0:26:120:26:14

has a surprise for them.

0:26:140:26:15

So I happen to have a live snake with me.

0:26:150:26:19

This species was close to the research centre,

0:26:200:26:23

so it counts as another animal found in the recovering forest.

0:26:230:26:27

So it's quite fast.

0:26:270:26:28

Can I?

0:26:300:26:31

You want to hold it? Hold it firmly but gently.

0:26:310:26:35

Oh!

0:26:350:26:37

That stinks! Had a poo on me!

0:26:390:26:42

Urgh!

0:26:440:26:46

You love snakes, but snakes really don't love you.

0:26:460:26:49

All part of the job, I'm afraid.

0:26:490:26:51

This snake is just one of the many animals that are protected

0:26:550:26:58

within the Ranomafana National Park.

0:26:580:27:00

And the bio blitz has proven to the gang that conservation does work.

0:27:020:27:06

What this challenge has shown them

0:27:100:27:11

is that protecting forests can have a profound effect.

0:27:110:27:15

With a helping hand, damaged forests can recover,

0:27:160:27:20

and once again support some of Madagascar's most dazzling wildlife.

0:27:200:27:23

Yeah!

0:27:250:27:26

With only a couple more days left in the national park, the guys

0:27:280:27:31

are going to get hands on working with the locals

0:27:310:27:34

and the scientists...

0:27:340:27:35

It's a lemur.

0:27:350:27:36

..to see how protecting these forests can play a vital role

0:27:360:27:40

for people as well as the animals.

0:27:400:27:43

And they'll get a surprise call from their friends at Kianjavato,

0:27:430:27:46

a chance to encounter one of the strangest animals on earth.

0:27:460:27:50

Oh, I see it!

0:27:500:27:52

It's right up there.
