These boys are setting off on the Tough Kids Challenge.

0:00:180:00:22

It's a gruelling test of endurance, a battle between the body

0:00:230:00:27

and the mind,

0:00:270:00:28

on one of the most extreme obstacle courses in the country.

0:00:280:00:32

It's known as the Tough Guy Challenge.

0:00:320:00:34

Each year, over 5,000 adults flock to Wolverhampton

0:00:360:00:39

to try to complete the 16-kilometre course.

0:00:390:00:42

It's so demanding that many of them don't make it to the finish line.

0:00:420:00:46

Hang in there, man.

0:00:480:00:49

This legendary race has never been attempted by children - until now.

0:00:490:00:55

120 schoolboys will be put to the test like never before.

0:00:550:01:00

Running the course are three 12-year-old boys - Jordan,

0:01:020:01:05

Sam

0:01:050:01:06

and Daniel.

0:01:060:01:08

Each has their own battle to fight.

0:01:080:01:10

'It was like a sledgehammer hitting my leg, breaking all my bones.'

0:01:100:01:14

It's a time of change, a rite of passage.

0:01:160:01:20

I couldn't face the fear. I looked down and that's what doubted me.

0:01:200:01:25

They will come to understand what it really means to be tough.

0:01:250:01:28

You don't have to be tough like with muscles.

0:01:280:01:31

You can be tough in your mind.

0:01:310:01:33

By taking risks and facing their fears,

0:01:330:01:37

these boys will prove to each other and to themselves

0:01:370:01:40

they have what it takes to become men.

0:01:400:01:42

This is Woodlands school for boys in Coventry.

0:01:500:01:53

It's a specialist sports college

0:01:530:01:55

but the Tough Guy Challenge is not just a physical test.

0:01:550:01:59

It's also a test of the mind.

0:01:590:02:01

It's gonna be tough, it's gonna be hard,

0:02:010:02:03

there'll be lots of things you don't want to do.

0:02:030:02:06

But you need to make sure that you overcome your fears

0:02:060:02:09

and that you do the best that you can do physically and mentally.

0:02:090:02:14

Go!

0:02:140:02:16

TEACHER SHOUTS ENCOURAGEMENT

0:02:200:02:24

There's just one week to go before the race.

0:02:240:02:27

Head of Sport, Boyd Young, is putting Year 7 through their paces.

0:02:270:02:32

They've got to get fit if they're to get through the race.

0:02:320:02:35

The course will be run by 120 boys aged 11 and 12.

0:02:420:02:46

It's a competition between the six different houses in the school.

0:02:460:02:50

For Sam, one of the smallest boys in the group,

0:02:510:02:54

it's all about trying your best.

0:02:540:02:56

Everyone who takes part is just the winner.

0:02:560:02:59

Like, say for instance my friends, they try really hard

0:02:590:03:04

so it's not about winning or losing,

0:03:040:03:08

it's the taking part.

0:03:080:03:09

Superb! This is where it starts to hurt!

0:03:090:03:12

Daniel is also one of the smallest boys in the year.

0:03:120:03:16

And he has a bad leg.

0:03:160:03:18

But he's determined to try his hardest for his house.

0:03:180:03:22

Sometimes you can get really tired and you want to give up.

0:03:220:03:26

Your body's aching and you've got cuts and bruises.

0:03:260:03:29

But you don't want to let your team down so you push on and help them.

0:03:290:03:34

Jordan is favourite to win the race.

0:03:360:03:39

He won't settle for anything less.

0:03:390:03:42

People always think I'm the strongest in Year 7

0:03:450:03:48

cos when I play rugby and they try and tackle me, it's impossible.

0:03:480:03:51

TEACHER: Catch him up! Come on!

0:03:510:03:54

I think pushing yourself to the limit can transform you

0:03:540:03:57

by making you realise you can conquer that course.

0:03:570:04:00

You, your friends, can look to that day and say, "I remember that day."

0:04:000:04:05

Off you go. Go and get changed.

0:04:050:04:07

Sam is 12 years old. He lives alone with his mum

0:04:110:04:15

but sees his dad at least twice a week.

0:04:150:04:17

Since his parents split up,

0:04:170:04:19

Sam has become the man of the house.

0:04:190:04:22

Being like the right-hand man in the house

0:04:220:04:26

is just - I've never done it before - so I'm like a beginner.

0:04:260:04:31

But I'm doing quite well.

0:04:310:04:33

Me and my mum are like a team

0:04:330:04:36

and whatever my mum goes through, I'll stick up for her all the way.

0:04:360:04:40

I'm willing to do that for the rest of my life if it has to.

0:04:400:04:44

'Sam may be small, but he's very tough.

0:04:450:04:49

'He's tough emotionally

0:04:490:04:51

'and he's tough physically.'

0:04:510:04:53

-What he's got to watch out is not to go too fast too soon.

-Yeah.

0:04:530:04:59

You may not win, but hopefully you'll complete it.

0:04:590:05:02

-May the best man win.

-Absolutely.

0:05:020:05:05

You'll have fun doing it, I think.

0:05:050:05:07

I'm a bit nervous of various things,

0:05:070:05:09

that you don't hurt yourself and don't fall off anything

0:05:090:05:13

or you don't get burnt feet!

0:05:130:05:15

But I'm sure it'll all go really well.

0:05:150:05:19

My mum, say, if I got in trouble,

0:05:190:05:23

she'd be like, "Oh, Sam, no! Sam!"

0:05:230:05:25

And if I hurt myself, she'd be all wimpy

0:05:250:05:30

but I'm fine with that, cos mums are mums, aren't they?

0:05:300:05:34

'Sam and I are really close.

0:05:340:05:37

'We look after each other, amuse each other occasionally.'

0:05:370:05:40

-Yeah. Definitely.

-And he does the odd driving me mad

0:05:400:05:45

-with his beat boxing.

-Beat boxing.

0:05:450:05:47

-That's me.

-But, um, yeah, he's been a real support

0:05:470:05:53

when times have been tough

0:05:530:05:57

and you don't expect that of your own son, especially one so young.

0:05:570:06:03

-But you've been brilliant.

-Thanks, Mum.

0:06:030:06:06

You're welcome.

0:06:060:06:08

MAN CALLS TO HORSES

0:06:080:06:11

The Tough Guy Challenge was invented by Billy Wilson,

0:06:130:06:16

otherwise known as Mr Mouse.

0:06:160:06:18

He used to be a sergeant major in the army with the Grenadier Guards.

0:06:180:06:23

Mr Mouse thinks people are too soft on kids these days.

0:06:230:06:27

Throughout history, boys have gone through tests of pain and endurance.

0:06:270:06:30

These are called rites of passage, or initiations.

0:06:300:06:34

He thinks boys become men by taking risks.

0:06:340:06:37

We had to go into the army

0:06:370:06:41

which taught you how to be a man.

0:06:410:06:44

In my day, we did assault courses,

0:06:440:06:47

we did army discipline.

0:06:470:06:49

This has been used for centuries. Centuries.

0:06:490:06:53

And I haven't invented it. I've recreated it.

0:06:530:06:57

The race starts with a one-kilometre warm-up run

0:06:580:07:01

down the entire length of the course.

0:07:010:07:03

They pass through Great Bear woods

0:07:030:07:05

and then on to the first major obstacle

0:07:050:07:08

known as "The Tiger's Teeth".

0:07:080:07:10

It consists of two giant A-frames covered in wooden beams

0:07:130:07:17

and cargo netting.

0:07:170:07:19

The boys must climb 15 metres to the top

0:07:190:07:22

and then scramble down the other side.

0:07:220:07:24

They're gonna be thrilled. They'll be full of adrenaline.

0:07:240:07:28

They're gonna fly up it.

0:07:280:07:31

That's the start of their adventure.

0:07:310:07:33

They know there's more beyond it.

0:07:330:07:36

This is where it all gets high, high in the mind.

0:07:360:07:39

Coming off the tail of The Tiger is the Somme Surprise.

0:07:430:07:46

This is followed by the Stalag Escape,

0:07:460:07:48

a 20-metre crawl under a tangled web of barbed wire

0:07:480:07:53

just inches above their heads.

0:07:530:07:55

Its name comes from a terrifying prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag 17,

0:07:550:07:59

run by the Germans in World War II.

0:07:590:08:02

It gives you a feeling of what it was like

0:08:020:08:06

in those days with trenches and barbed wire

0:08:060:08:09

and getting out of these prisons.

0:08:090:08:11

They've got to get down on their belly and crawl, snake crawl,

0:08:110:08:15

elbow after elbow. Blood on your bum and blood on your belly.

0:08:150:08:19

The boys then enter an area known as The Killing Fields.

0:08:190:08:23

This is the heart of the Tough Guy course.

0:08:230:08:26

The main obstacle here is a 15-metre-high rope walkway called

0:08:260:08:30

The Behemoth.

0:08:300:08:33

Up there, without hook-up wires, without a helmet,

0:08:360:08:39

without anything except their capability,

0:08:390:08:42

their risk-taking, to hold on and grip those ropes

0:08:420:08:45

because if they let them go, where will they fall to?

0:08:450:08:49

The boys will run through fire and water.

0:08:490:08:52

They'll crawl through the pitch-black tunnels of the Vietcong

0:08:520:08:56

then make one final exhausting push uphill to the very last obstacle

0:08:560:09:00

at the highest point on the course,

0:09:000:09:02

known as Paradise Climb.

0:09:020:09:05

The finale is the one where we'll be gritting our teeth

0:09:050:09:09

and biting our nails to see them passing over the top of the big one.

0:09:090:09:14

This will find out how much strength of character is in the boys

0:09:140:09:20

because when you're up there you're either gonna walk it

0:09:200:09:24

or you're gonna crawl it, or you're gonna cry it.

0:09:240:09:27

12-year-old Daniel has a personal battle to fight in the race.

0:09:300:09:35

Four years ago, he was diagnosed with Perthes' Disease,

0:09:350:09:38

a rare illness that affects your bones, making them grow differently.

0:09:380:09:44

He had two operations on his left leg when he was ten.

0:09:440:09:47

He was in a wheelchair for six months

0:09:500:09:53

and then on crutches until just a year ago.

0:09:530:09:56

Now he's facing the toughest physical challenge of his life.

0:09:560:10:00

I'm a bit nervous. I don't think he can do it cos of his leg.

0:10:030:10:07

Some days he can walk OK and some days he's in absolute agony.

0:10:070:10:11

He's suffered this week with cramp

0:10:110:10:14

so I think he's trying to overdo it before.

0:10:140:10:17

I'm a bit apprehensive.

0:10:170:10:19

'I have been confident, funnily.'

0:10:190:10:22

I have tried to stay strong and have been quite chirpy.

0:10:220:10:26

But sometimes I do think, "Why me?"

0:10:260:10:28

Everyone that sponsored him knows what he's been through.

0:10:290:10:33

Even if he just does two obstacles, they're prepared to pay up.

0:10:330:10:37

They know he'll do his best. They know he's a fighter.

0:10:370:10:40

That's Daniel. Always has been, always will be.

0:10:400:10:43

Where he got it from, I don't know. It's not in my genes!

0:10:430:10:47

I'm gonna try and do the best I can.

0:10:470:10:49

Not overdo it, nor under.

0:10:490:10:52

I'm gonna try my best and give it all I've got.

0:10:520:10:55

With the big day approaching,

0:11:010:11:04

the boys are getting special coaching from a tough guy expert.

0:11:040:11:08

Welcome this morning. We are very lucky to have James Appleton here,

0:11:080:11:13

who was the winner of the Tough Guy race you're going to do

0:11:130:11:16

as Tough Kids. So a big round of applause for James Appleton.

0:11:160:11:20

The first thing to know about Tough Guys is it's not a race.

0:11:240:11:28

It's an obstacle course designed to test you

0:11:280:11:31

and your limits and push you to them.

0:11:310:11:33

So it's about survival.

0:11:330:11:36

But not in a way that you think, "That was easy."

0:11:360:11:39

If you do, you've not tried hard enough.

0:11:390:11:41

It's about crossing the finish line with nothing left.

0:11:410:11:44

James gives the boys a taster of the challenges they'll face.

0:11:470:11:51

This film is all about his epic victory

0:11:510:11:54

in the 2009 Tough Guy Challenge.

0:11:540:11:58

The reality of the race is suddenly looming large.

0:12:020:12:06

It's dangerous and demanding.

0:12:060:12:08

When he reached the end of the race, James collapsed on the finish line.

0:12:080:12:12

He had to be taken away for treatment by paramedics.

0:12:120:12:16

There'll come a point where your body says, "I've had enough.

0:12:170:12:22

"I'm tired, cold, wet, muddy.

0:12:220:12:25

"I've been bashed about a bit."

0:12:250:12:27

But you then have to decide if you're gonna walk for a bit

0:12:270:12:31

and not try any harder, or if you're gonna crack on

0:12:310:12:34

and toughen up. You have to work that out for yourselves.

0:12:340:12:37

That's what it's about, it's about that moment

0:12:370:12:40

when you find out whether you've got grit inside you

0:12:400:12:43

or whether you're made of lesser stuff.

0:12:430:12:45

Don't let it beat you. You have to beat the course.

0:12:450:12:48

OK? Good luck with that.

0:12:480:12:51

James's pep talk has got the boys worried.

0:12:580:13:01

Pre-match nerves are starting to kick in.

0:13:010:13:04

Now that I've seen the actual video,

0:13:050:13:07

it's got me thinking and I'm scared.

0:13:070:13:09

It's got me thinking if I'm really fit to do it

0:13:090:13:13

or if I'm really not fit.

0:13:130:13:14

Cos I haven't been training much and it's got me a bit nervous.

0:13:140:13:18

Getting me scared is like barbed wire and stuff like that.

0:13:180:13:22

And being stuck under those tunnels, that gets me quite scared.

0:13:220:13:27

I'll probably be gasping for breath cos I've got asthma

0:13:270:13:31

so that might be an issue like holding my breath and stuff.

0:13:310:13:34

I don't really like tight spaces cos I'm quite claustrophobic.

0:13:340:13:40

And crawling through small places is still kind of nerve-wracking.

0:13:400:13:45

I took some tips from the guy that won it last time.

0:13:450:13:48

He said you've got to be fit and try and when your body says no,

0:13:480:13:52

you say yes. I'll try and push on as hard as I can.

0:13:520:13:56

12-year-old Jordan comes from Zimbabwe in South Africa.

0:13:580:14:01

Two years ago, Jordan's dad died.

0:14:010:14:04

He and his 16-year-old brother, Nicholas,

0:14:040:14:07

left Africa and came to live with their mum here in Coventry.

0:14:070:14:12

Jordan's a very strong-willed boy. He takes a lot of that from his dad.

0:14:120:14:17

Some of it from me, I guess!

0:14:170:14:19

He's very motivated. If he's gonna do something, he'll do his best.

0:14:190:14:24

I couldn't find what I wanted.

0:14:240:14:26

They desperately miss their dad.

0:14:260:14:29

His dad passed away, it's almost two years now.

0:14:290:14:33

But, in saying that, I think he's doing really well.

0:14:330:14:37

He continually tells me he's gonna be like his dad.

0:14:370:14:42

So I'm not worried in that department.

0:14:420:14:44

He'll make a very good man.

0:14:440:14:46

My dad died in 2006. He was sick for quite some time.

0:14:460:14:51

He was sick for about two years.

0:14:510:14:54

And then I knew something bad was gonna happen

0:14:540:14:58

when he went into hospital for the sixth or seventh time.

0:14:580:15:02

And then the day I was meant to go and see him,

0:15:020:15:06

I got the bad news that he had passed away.

0:15:060:15:10

So I wasn't really shocked or really emotional

0:15:100:15:16

cos I'd expected that to happen.

0:15:160:15:18

He was buried on Christmas Day, which is the worst thing ever!

0:15:180:15:24

Jordan and his family are on their way to chapel.

0:15:250:15:28

They go at least twice a week, sometimes more.

0:15:280:15:31

# I know who I am #

0:15:310:15:34

Jordan says his belief in himself

0:15:340:15:36

comes from his belief in God.

0:15:360:15:39

# I know who I am

0:15:390:15:42

# I am yours... #

0:15:420:15:44

My faith helps my strength cos sometimes when I feel really down

0:15:440:15:48

when I'm doing cross country

0:15:480:15:50

I like singing the church song or start praying or something

0:15:500:15:54

and then I get that energy boost to carry on going.

0:15:540:15:57

# Jesus, you are mine. #

0:15:570:16:03

It's the day of the race and there's a buzz of excitement in the air.

0:16:090:16:13

Really nervous, but really up for it.

0:16:130:16:16

Mum's coming to see me today.

0:16:280:16:30

We were getting ready this morning and she was all nervous and that.

0:16:300:16:34

But she'll cheer me on and encourage me to get through the race.

0:16:340:16:40

I think it'll be really good.

0:16:400:16:42

Success would be a great honour to have,

0:16:420:16:45

and failure would be a big disappointment

0:16:450:16:50

and I'll have to come and do the course again

0:16:500:16:53

to overcome my fears, if I have any.

0:16:530:16:56

I do get asthma sometimes bad

0:16:560:16:58

but I've been taking these tablets and they've been helping me

0:16:580:17:03

for a couple of years now.

0:17:030:17:06

So I might get a bit asthmatic,

0:17:060:17:10

but I'll just see how I go.

0:17:100:17:12

I'd imagine they're a bit nervous.

0:17:210:17:24

The journey was longer than expected. A few turns now and then.

0:17:240:17:27

One boy's been sick on the bus, so he's really scared.

0:17:270:17:30

Jordan's looking to be the main man. He's trying to get up there.

0:17:300:17:34

I think he'll be pushed hard by quite a few of them.

0:17:340:17:37

There's a group of them going off for it right from the start.

0:17:370:17:40

Fortunately, I haven't got to keep up with them! Good!

0:17:400:17:43

Slide down on your bottoms because the grass is a bit wet.

0:17:430:17:48

And take it easy at all points.

0:17:480:17:51

Less accidents when you're taking it easy.

0:17:510:17:54

Are we ready?

0:17:540:17:55

-Are we ready?

-ALL: Yes!

0:17:550:17:58

Are we ready? Wooooo!

0:17:580:18:01

120 boys and 36 staff and sixth formers

0:18:030:18:08

are on their way to becoming Tough Guys.

0:18:080:18:11

Keeping an eye on all the action is head marshal, Mr Mouse.

0:18:120:18:17

Up the hill! Up the hill!

0:18:180:18:20

We're at the bridge.

0:18:230:18:25

We're at the bridge.

0:18:250:18:27

As they move on to the first obstacles,

0:18:300:18:32

the boys are settling in to their rhythm.

0:18:320:18:34

The group is starting to spread out and Jordan is speeding up.

0:18:340:18:38

As I was running along, I was enjoying it.

0:18:420:18:45

I didn't care that I was behind

0:18:450:18:47

cos I knew that people would tire out sooner or later.

0:18:470:18:51

I paced myself, making sure that I didn't cause myself any harm.

0:18:520:18:56

Work as a team. Good. Well done!

0:18:590:19:02

Jordan has made it to the front,

0:19:020:19:04

but behind race leader, Bradley.

0:19:040:19:06

They're neck and neck as they approach The Tiger's Teeth.

0:19:060:19:09

It's the first major obstacle on the course.

0:19:130:19:16

A 15-metre scramble up and over two massive wooden A-frames.

0:19:160:19:21

I think it helped to have the pair of us.

0:19:280:19:32

If you have someone there, you fight against them

0:19:320:19:34

and try your hardest and push on and be strong.

0:19:340:19:37

-DANIEL:

-It feels amazing cos you don't really feel anything,

0:19:370:19:41

you just run and you don't want to stop. You can't stop.

0:19:410:19:45

Even if you're hurting, got a stitch or something,

0:19:450:19:48

you still keep running cos you don't want to let your house down.

0:19:480:19:52

You want to do the course.

0:19:520:19:54

SAM: When I went up those really high obstacles,

0:19:550:19:59

I thought, "I've never done this before"

0:19:590:20:01

and to go up so high and look at the countryside is an amazing feeling,

0:20:010:20:07

but also really scary.

0:20:070:20:10

When you climb up, people were struggling.

0:20:100:20:12

You want to get past and carry on

0:20:120:20:15

but you have to stay behind until they get over.

0:20:150:20:18

So it's a bit frustrating.

0:20:180:20:20

The boys are half-way through the course.

0:20:370:20:40

But most of the toughest challenges are ahead.

0:20:400:20:42

While Jordan and Bradley take on the Behemoth,

0:20:420:20:45

Sam and Daniel are not far behind.

0:20:450:20:48

They're crawling in the mud at the Stalag Escape.

0:20:480:20:51

SAM: I thought, "I've got to do this a certain way.

0:20:510:20:55

"I've got to keep my head down and do the race and not worry."

0:20:550:20:59

You could look up any time

0:21:010:21:03

and have a bit of barbed wire sticking in your head.

0:21:030:21:06

More and more runners are entering The Killing Fields.

0:21:090:21:13

The obstacles are pushing them to their limits

0:21:130:21:16

and separating the men from the boys.

0:21:160:21:18

Get in. Here's another.

0:21:180:21:20

The first casualties are taken by ambulance to be checked over.

0:21:220:21:27

But most of the boys are finding their stride, taking risks

0:21:270:21:30

and pushing themselves to the max.

0:21:300:21:33

Mr Mouse is enjoying the heat of the battle,

0:21:340:21:38

watching the boys become men before his very eyes.

0:21:380:21:40

The kids have done something unusual.

0:21:420:21:44

It's something that when they get home they'll say,

0:21:440:21:47

"Marvellous! I did that!

0:21:470:21:49

"I did that. Marvellous!"

0:21:490:21:51

They certainly will feel that they're a man, completing this.

0:21:510:21:55

They did a man's Tough Guy. That's what they did. Fabulous.

0:21:550:21:59

They'll be smiling and happy when they finish.

0:21:590:22:02

The front runners, Jordan and Bradley,

0:22:020:22:05

are coming to the end of the course.

0:22:050:22:07

They're about to approach Paradise Climb.

0:22:070:22:10

It's the final and most formidable obstacle on the course.

0:22:140:22:18

A series of single planks suspended 15 metres in the air.

0:22:180:22:22

They're still neck and neck as they start the climb.

0:22:230:22:26

Nice and steady!

0:22:260:22:27

Jordan's doing fantastic. I hope he keeps the pace. He's doing so well.

0:22:270:22:32

But suddenly Jordan freezes in fear at the highest point on the course.

0:22:320:22:37

Bradley streaks ahead towards the finish.

0:22:380:22:40

But Jordan's legs give way completely.

0:22:400:22:43

He has to sit down to steady his nerves and get across.

0:22:430:22:47

Sam is back in The Killing Fields, battling with the elements, fire

0:22:490:22:53

and water.

0:22:530:22:55

The water was so cold! I was freezing, all my body.

0:22:550:23:00

I was like, "I can't do this. I can't do this."

0:23:000:23:03

It was like a sledgehammer hitting my legs,

0:23:030:23:06

breaking every bone in my body. Horrible!

0:23:060:23:10

Daniel's height and his bad leg are working against him on the Behemoth.

0:23:120:23:16

He's at full stretch on the ropes.

0:23:160:23:19

Jordan's hesitation has lost him the race.

0:23:230:23:26

Bradley has won and Jordan is only just on his way down.

0:23:260:23:31

As Mr Mouse predicted,

0:23:440:23:46

the final obstacle is proving to be the biggest test of all.

0:23:460:23:50

Some boys simply can't face it and had to walk round.

0:23:500:23:54

Others are finding an inner strength and battling with their fears.

0:23:540:23:59

Now they find out what it really means to be tough.

0:23:590:24:02

It's just scary because you wouldn't know if you went onto another plank

0:24:020:24:08

that it was gonna be stable or not.

0:24:080:24:10

You just had adrenaline in your head all the way through it.

0:24:100:24:14

And the height was just ridiculous!

0:24:140:24:17

Well done! You're doing really well!

0:24:180:24:21

At the end, I plucked up my courage and I absolutely went for it.

0:24:220:24:26

And I'm really glad I did it.

0:24:260:24:29

Keep going!

0:24:290:24:31

Sam finishes ninth in the race.

0:24:340:24:36

Daniel's not far behind on Paradise Climb.

0:24:360:24:40

His leg is getting more and more painful.

0:24:400:24:42

Come on, mate, you can do it! You've done so well!

0:24:420:24:45

I'm so proud of you, mate!

0:24:450:24:47

My mum was encouraging me on, so I couldn't really stop.

0:24:470:24:50

I was trying to go as fast as I can

0:24:500:24:53

but it's really hurting.

0:24:530:24:55

It felt like somebody kept stabbing me in different places

0:24:550:24:58

on my legs and arms. It feels like sharp pins and it really hurts.

0:24:580:25:05

You kind of have to carry on.

0:25:050:25:07

I'm so overwhelmed, I really am. Sorry.

0:25:090:25:12

I didn't expect that he could do this.

0:25:120:25:14

A year ago he was on crutches.

0:25:140:25:17

I didn't think he could do this. I'm so... Oh...

0:25:170:25:20

I'm just speechless.

0:25:200:25:22

I'm so happy for him. So chuffed to bits.

0:25:220:25:24

He is really one tough kid.

0:25:240:25:27

He really is one tough little cookie.

0:25:270:25:29

He's in a lot of pain. I can see it on his face. But he'll finish it.

0:25:290:25:33

Crossing the finish line was like a dream come true.

0:25:370:25:40

It was amazing cos I was looking forward to that moment

0:25:400:25:43

like for six weeks.

0:25:430:25:45

And when I crossed, my mum gave me a cuddle and I got a medal

0:25:450:25:50

and I felt so chuffed that I had got a medal for doing it.

0:25:500:25:53

My mum was very emotional at the end

0:25:560:26:00

because she knew I had a bad leg

0:26:000:26:03

and I got all the way through this course.

0:26:030:26:05

I felt it was quite embarrassing, really.

0:26:050:26:08

For me, it's been absolutely fantastic.

0:26:080:26:11

The boys have conquered their fears of heights, going through water,

0:26:110:26:15

pushing themselves to the limit. Can't fault them. Brilliant.

0:26:150:26:18

As the boys thaw out with a hot drink,

0:26:180:26:21

it's time for the prize-giving, to find out which house won.

0:26:210:26:25

You've been fantastic completing that course.

0:26:250:26:28

The team that has won overall

0:26:280:26:32

is Ellis.

0:26:320:26:34

They're at the top of the tree.

0:26:340:26:37

'Tough Guy has really changed my life.

0:26:390:26:41

'It's caused me a lot of pain

0:26:410:26:43

'but now I know I can do it again.'

0:26:430:26:46

It's made me a tougher person

0:26:460:26:48

cos I can go to somebody and say, "Have you done that Tough Guy race?"

0:26:480:26:52

And they'll say, "No", and I can tell them about it.

0:26:520:26:55

So I think it's a really good thing.

0:26:550:26:57

Jordan's moment of fear may have cost him the race,

0:26:570:27:01

but it's taught him an important lesson.

0:27:010:27:04

'As I got to a place where there was just single planks,

0:27:040:27:07

I looked down and I think that's what doubted me.

0:27:070:27:11

I couldn't overcome one fear that I've been overcoming the whole race.

0:27:110:27:15

One thing, by looking down, just doubted me and then I just lost it.

0:27:150:27:20

Next time I'm here, I've got something to achieve, to beat.

0:27:210:27:25

I think my dad would be really proud

0:27:250:27:27

and I think he'd be like, "Don't worry about what's just happened.

0:27:270:27:31

"Just carry on and train and become a better person

0:27:310:27:37

"even though you never came first.

0:27:370:27:39

"You win some, you lose some.

0:27:390:27:41

"Life isn't always about winning." I think he'd be really proud.

0:27:410:27:45

'I was a 12-year-old boy,

0:27:460:27:48

'a normal 12-year-old.

0:27:480:27:50

'But then I became a 12-year-old man, a strong man,

0:27:500:27:52

'cos I completed the course.'
