These boys are setting off on the Tough Kids Challenge. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
It's a gruelling test of endurance, a battle between the body | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
and the mind, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
on one of the most extreme obstacle courses in the country. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
It's known as the Tough Guy Challenge. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
Each year, over 5,000 adults flock to Wolverhampton | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
to try to complete the 16-kilometre course. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
It's so demanding that many of them don't make it to the finish line. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Hang in there, man. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
This legendary race has never been attempted by children - until now. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:55
120 schoolboys will be put to the test like never before. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:00
Running the course are three 12-year-old boys - Jordan, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Sam | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06 | |
and Daniel. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Each has their own battle to fight. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
'It was like a sledgehammer hitting my leg, breaking all my bones.' | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
It's a time of change, a rite of passage. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
I couldn't face the fear. I looked down and that's what doubted me. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
They will come to understand what it really means to be tough. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
You don't have to be tough like with muscles. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
You can be tough in your mind. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
By taking risks and facing their fears, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
these boys will prove to each other and to themselves | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
they have what it takes to become men. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
This is Woodlands school for boys in Coventry. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
It's a specialist sports college | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
but the Tough Guy Challenge is not just a physical test. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
It's also a test of the mind. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
It's gonna be tough, it's gonna be hard, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
there'll be lots of things you don't want to do. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
But you need to make sure that you overcome your fears | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
and that you do the best that you can do physically and mentally. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
Go! | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16 | |
TEACHER SHOUTS ENCOURAGEMENT | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
There's just one week to go before the race. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Head of Sport, Boyd Young, is putting Year 7 through their paces. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
They've got to get fit if they're to get through the race. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
The course will be run by 120 boys aged 11 and 12. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
It's a competition between the six different houses in the school. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
For Sam, one of the smallest boys in the group, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
it's all about trying your best. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Everyone who takes part is just the winner. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Like, say for instance my friends, they try really hard | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
so it's not about winning or losing, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
it's the taking part. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
Superb! This is where it starts to hurt! | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
Daniel is also one of the smallest boys in the year. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
And he has a bad leg. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
But he's determined to try his hardest for his house. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
Sometimes you can get really tired and you want to give up. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
Your body's aching and you've got cuts and bruises. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
But you don't want to let your team down so you push on and help them. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
Jordan is favourite to win the race. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
He won't settle for anything less. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
People always think I'm the strongest in Year 7 | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
cos when I play rugby and they try and tackle me, it's impossible. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
TEACHER: Catch him up! Come on! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
I think pushing yourself to the limit can transform you | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
by making you realise you can conquer that course. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
You, your friends, can look to that day and say, "I remember that day." | 0:04:00 | 0:04:05
Off you go. Go and get changed. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Sam is 12 years old. He lives alone with his mum | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
but sees his dad at least twice a week. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Since his parents split up, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
Sam has become the man of the house. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
Being like the right-hand man in the house | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
is just - I've never done it before - so I'm like a beginner. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:31
But I'm doing quite well. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
Me and my mum are like a team | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
and whatever my mum goes through, I'll stick up for her all the way. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
I'm willing to do that for the rest of my life if it has to. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
'Sam may be small, but he's very tough. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
'He's tough emotionally | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
'and he's tough physically.' | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
-What he's got to watch out is not to go too fast too soon. -Yeah. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:59
You may not win, but hopefully you'll complete it. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
-May the best man win. -Absolutely. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
You'll have fun doing it, I think. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
I'm a bit nervous of various things, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
that you don't hurt yourself and don't fall off anything | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
or you don't get burnt feet! | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
But I'm sure it'll all go really well. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
My mum, say, if I got in trouble, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
she'd be like, "Oh, Sam, no! Sam!" | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
And if I hurt myself, she'd be all wimpy | 0:05:25 | 0:05:30
but I'm fine with that, cos mums are mums, aren't they? | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
'Sam and I are really close. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
'We look after each other, amuse each other occasionally.' | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
-Yeah. Definitely. -And he does the odd driving me mad | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
-with his beat boxing. -Beat boxing. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
-That's me. -But, um, yeah, he's been a real support | 0:05:47 | 0:05:53
when times have been tough | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
and you don't expect that of your own son, especially one so young. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:03
-But you've been brilliant. -Thanks, Mum. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
You're welcome. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
MAN CALLS TO HORSES | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
The Tough Guy Challenge was invented by Billy Wilson, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
otherwise known as Mr Mouse. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
He used to be a sergeant major in the army with the Grenadier Guards. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
Mr Mouse thinks people are too soft on kids these days. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
Throughout history, boys have gone through tests of pain and endurance. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
These are called rites of passage, or initiations. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
He thinks boys become men by taking risks. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
We had to go into the army | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
which taught you how to be a man. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
In my day, we did assault courses, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
we did army discipline. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
This has been used for centuries. Centuries. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
And I haven't invented it. I've recreated it. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
The race starts with a one-kilometre warm-up run | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
down the entire length of the course. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
They pass through Great Bear woods | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
and then on to the first major obstacle | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
known as "The Tiger's Teeth". | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
It consists of two giant A-frames covered in wooden beams | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
and cargo netting. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
The boys must climb 15 metres to the top | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
and then scramble down the other side. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
They're gonna be thrilled. They'll be full of adrenaline. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
They're gonna fly up it. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
That's the start of their adventure. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
They know there's more beyond it. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
This is where it all gets high, high in the mind. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
Coming off the tail of The Tiger is the Somme Surprise. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
This is followed by the Stalag Escape, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
a 20-metre crawl under a tangled web of barbed wire | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
just inches above their heads. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
Its name comes from a terrifying prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag 17, | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
run by the Germans in World War II. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
It gives you a feeling of what it was like | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
in those days with trenches and barbed wire | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
and getting out of these prisons. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
They've got to get down on their belly and crawl, snake crawl, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
elbow after elbow. Blood on your bum and blood on your belly. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
The boys then enter an area known as The Killing Fields. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
This is the heart of the Tough Guy course. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
The main obstacle here is a 15-metre-high rope walkway called | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
The Behemoth. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
Up there, without hook-up wires, without a helmet, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
without anything except their capability, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
their risk-taking, to hold on and grip those ropes | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
because if they let them go, where will they fall to? | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
The boys will run through fire and water. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
They'll crawl through the pitch-black tunnels of the Vietcong | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
then make one final exhausting push uphill to the very last obstacle | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
at the highest point on the course, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
known as Paradise Climb. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
The finale is the one where we'll be gritting our teeth | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
and biting our nails to see them passing over the top of the big one. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:14
This will find out how much strength of character is in the boys | 0:09:14 | 0:09:20
because when you're up there you're either gonna walk it | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
or you're gonna crawl it, or you're gonna cry it. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
12-year-old Daniel has a personal battle to fight in the race. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:35
Four years ago, he was diagnosed with Perthes' Disease, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
a rare illness that affects your bones, making them grow differently. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:44
He had two operations on his left leg when he was ten. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
He was in a wheelchair for six months | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
and then on crutches until just a year ago. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
Now he's facing the toughest physical challenge of his life. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
I'm a bit nervous. I don't think he can do it cos of his leg. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
Some days he can walk OK and some days he's in absolute agony. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
He's suffered this week with cramp | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
so I think he's trying to overdo it before. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
I'm a bit apprehensive. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
'I have been confident, funnily.' | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
I have tried to stay strong and have been quite chirpy. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
But sometimes I do think, "Why me?" | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
Everyone that sponsored him knows what he's been through. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
Even if he just does two obstacles, they're prepared to pay up. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
They know he'll do his best. They know he's a fighter. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
That's Daniel. Always has been, always will be. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Where he got it from, I don't know. It's not in my genes! | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
I'm gonna try and do the best I can. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
Not overdo it, nor under. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
I'm gonna try my best and give it all I've got. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
With the big day approaching, | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
the boys are getting special coaching from a tough guy expert. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
Welcome this morning. We are very lucky to have James Appleton here, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:13
who was the winner of the Tough Guy race you're going to do | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
as Tough Kids. So a big round of applause for James Appleton. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
The first thing to know about Tough Guys is it's not a race. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
It's an obstacle course designed to test you | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
and your limits and push you to them. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
So it's about survival. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
But not in a way that you think, "That was easy." | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
If you do, you've not tried hard enough. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
It's about crossing the finish line with nothing left. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
James gives the boys a taster of the challenges they'll face. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
This film is all about his epic victory | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
in the 2009 Tough Guy Challenge. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
The reality of the race is suddenly looming large. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
It's dangerous and demanding. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
When he reached the end of the race, James collapsed on the finish line. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
He had to be taken away for treatment by paramedics. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
There'll come a point where your body says, "I've had enough. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
"I'm tired, cold, wet, muddy. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
"I've been bashed about a bit." | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
But you then have to decide if you're gonna walk for a bit | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
and not try any harder, or if you're gonna crack on | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
and toughen up. You have to work that out for yourselves. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
That's what it's about, it's about that moment | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
when you find out whether you've got grit inside you | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
or whether you're made of lesser stuff. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
Don't let it beat you. You have to beat the course. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
OK? Good luck with that. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
James's pep talk has got the boys worried. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
Pre-match nerves are starting to kick in. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
Now that I've seen the actual video, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
it's got me thinking and I'm scared. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
It's got me thinking if I'm really fit to do it | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
or if I'm really not fit. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
Cos I haven't been training much and it's got me a bit nervous. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
Getting me scared is like barbed wire and stuff like that. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
And being stuck under those tunnels, that gets me quite scared. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
I'll probably be gasping for breath cos I've got asthma | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
so that might be an issue like holding my breath and stuff. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
I don't really like tight spaces cos I'm quite claustrophobic. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:40
And crawling through small places is still kind of nerve-wracking. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:45
I took some tips from the guy that won it last time. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
He said you've got to be fit and try and when your body says no, | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
you say yes. I'll try and push on as hard as I can. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
12-year-old Jordan comes from Zimbabwe in South Africa. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
Two years ago, Jordan's dad died. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
He and his 16-year-old brother, Nicholas, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
left Africa and came to live with their mum here in Coventry. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:12
Jordan's a very strong-willed boy. He takes a lot of that from his dad. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:17
Some of it from me, I guess! | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
He's very motivated. If he's gonna do something, he'll do his best. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:24
I couldn't find what I wanted. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
They desperately miss their dad. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
His dad passed away, it's almost two years now. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
But, in saying that, I think he's doing really well. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
He continually tells me he's gonna be like his dad. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:42
So I'm not worried in that department. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
He'll make a very good man. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
My dad died in 2006. He was sick for quite some time. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:51
He was sick for about two years. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
And then I knew something bad was gonna happen | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
when he went into hospital for the sixth or seventh time. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
And then the day I was meant to go and see him, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
I got the bad news that he had passed away. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
So I wasn't really shocked or really emotional | 0:15:10 | 0:15:16
cos I'd expected that to happen. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
He was buried on Christmas Day, which is the worst thing ever! | 0:15:18 | 0:15:24
Jordan and his family are on their way to chapel. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
They go at least twice a week, sometimes more. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
# I know who I am # | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
Jordan says his belief in himself | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
comes from his belief in God. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
# I know who I am | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
# I am yours... # | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
My faith helps my strength cos sometimes when I feel really down | 0:15:44 | 0:15:48
when I'm doing cross country | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
I like singing the church song or start praying or something | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
and then I get that energy boost to carry on going. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
# Jesus, you are mine. # | 0:15:57 | 0:16:03
It's the day of the race and there's a buzz of excitement in the air. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
Really nervous, but really up for it. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
Mum's coming to see me today. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
We were getting ready this morning and she was all nervous and that. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
But she'll cheer me on and encourage me to get through the race. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:40
I think it'll be really good. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Success would be a great honour to have, | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
and failure would be a big disappointment | 0:16:45 | 0:16:50
and I'll have to come and do the course again | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
to overcome my fears, if I have any. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
I do get asthma sometimes bad | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
but I've been taking these tablets and they've been helping me | 0:16:58 | 0:17:03
for a couple of years now. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
So I might get a bit asthmatic, | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
but I'll just see how I go. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
I'd imagine they're a bit nervous. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
The journey was longer than expected. A few turns now and then. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
One boy's been sick on the bus, so he's really scared. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
Jordan's looking to be the main man. He's trying to get up there. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
I think he'll be pushed hard by quite a few of them. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
There's a group of them going off for it right from the start. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
Fortunately, I haven't got to keep up with them! Good! | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
Slide down on your bottoms because the grass is a bit wet. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:48
And take it easy at all points. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
Less accidents when you're taking it easy. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
Are we ready? | 0:17:54 | 0:17:55
-Are we ready? -ALL: Yes! | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
Are we ready? Wooooo! | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
120 boys and 36 staff and sixth formers | 0:18:03 | 0:18:08
are on their way to becoming Tough Guys. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
Keeping an eye on all the action is head marshal, Mr Mouse. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
Up the hill! Up the hill! | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
We're at the bridge. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
We're at the bridge. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:27
As they move on to the first obstacles, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
the boys are settling in to their rhythm. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
The group is starting to spread out and Jordan is speeding up. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
As I was running along, I was enjoying it. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
I didn't care that I was behind | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
cos I knew that people would tire out sooner or later. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:51
I paced myself, making sure that I didn't cause myself any harm. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
Work as a team. Good. Well done! | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
Jordan has made it to the front, | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
but behind race leader, Bradley. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
They're neck and neck as they approach The Tiger's Teeth. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
It's the first major obstacle on the course. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
A 15-metre scramble up and over two massive wooden A-frames. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:21
I think it helped to have the pair of us. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
If you have someone there, you fight against them | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
and try your hardest and push on and be strong. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
-DANIEL: -It feels amazing cos you don't really feel anything, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
you just run and you don't want to stop. You can't stop. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
Even if you're hurting, got a stitch or something, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
you still keep running cos you don't want to let your house down. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
You want to do the course. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
SAM: When I went up those really high obstacles, | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
I thought, "I've never done this before" | 0:19:59 | 0:20:01
and to go up so high and look at the countryside is an amazing feeling, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:07
but also really scary. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
When you climb up, people were struggling. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
You want to get past and carry on | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
but you have to stay behind until they get over. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
So it's a bit frustrating. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
The boys are half-way through the course. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
But most of the toughest challenges are ahead. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
While Jordan and Bradley take on the Behemoth, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:45
Sam and Daniel are not far behind. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
They're crawling in the mud at the Stalag Escape. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
SAM: I thought, "I've got to do this a certain way. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
"I've got to keep my head down and do the race and not worry." | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
You could look up any time | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
and have a bit of barbed wire sticking in your head. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
More and more runners are entering The Killing Fields. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:13
The obstacles are pushing them to their limits | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
and separating the men from the boys. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
Get in. Here's another. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
The first casualties are taken by ambulance to be checked over. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:27
But most of the boys are finding their stride, taking risks | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
and pushing themselves to the max. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
Mr Mouse is enjoying the heat of the battle, | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
watching the boys become men before his very eyes. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
The kids have done something unusual. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
It's something that when they get home they'll say, | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
"Marvellous! I did that! | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
"I did that. Marvellous!" | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
They certainly will feel that they're a man, completing this. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
They did a man's Tough Guy. That's what they did. Fabulous. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
They'll be smiling and happy when they finish. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
The front runners, Jordan and Bradley, | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
are coming to the end of the course. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
They're about to approach Paradise Climb. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
It's the final and most formidable obstacle on the course. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
A series of single planks suspended 15 metres in the air. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
They're still neck and neck as they start the climb. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
Nice and steady! | 0:22:26 | 0:22:27
Jordan's doing fantastic. I hope he keeps the pace. He's doing so well. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
But suddenly Jordan freezes in fear at the highest point on the course. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:37
Bradley streaks ahead towards the finish. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
But Jordan's legs give way completely. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
He has to sit down to steady his nerves and get across. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:47
Sam is back in The Killing Fields, battling with the elements, fire | 0:22:49 | 0:22:53
and water. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
The water was so cold! I was freezing, all my body. | 0:22:55 | 0:23:00
I was like, "I can't do this. I can't do this." | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
It was like a sledgehammer hitting my legs, | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
breaking every bone in my body. Horrible! | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
Daniel's height and his bad leg are working against him on the Behemoth. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:16
He's at full stretch on the ropes. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
Jordan's hesitation has lost him the race. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
Bradley has won and Jordan is only just on his way down. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:31
As Mr Mouse predicted, | 0:23:44 | 0:23:46
the final obstacle is proving to be the biggest test of all. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
Some boys simply can't face it and had to walk round. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
Others are finding an inner strength and battling with their fears. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:59
Now they find out what it really means to be tough. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
It's just scary because you wouldn't know if you went onto another plank | 0:24:02 | 0:24:08
that it was gonna be stable or not. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
You just had adrenaline in your head all the way through it. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
And the height was just ridiculous! | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
Well done! You're doing really well! | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
At the end, I plucked up my courage and I absolutely went for it. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
And I'm really glad I did it. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:29
Keep going! | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
Sam finishes ninth in the race. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
Daniel's not far behind on Paradise Climb. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
His leg is getting more and more painful. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
Come on, mate, you can do it! You've done so well! | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
I'm so proud of you, mate! | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
My mum was encouraging me on, so I couldn't really stop. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
I was trying to go as fast as I can | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
but it's really hurting. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
It felt like somebody kept stabbing me in different places | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
on my legs and arms. It feels like sharp pins and it really hurts. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:05
You kind of have to carry on. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
I'm so overwhelmed, I really am. Sorry. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
I didn't expect that he could do this. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
A year ago he was on crutches. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
I didn't think he could do this. I'm so... Oh... | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
I'm just speechless. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
I'm so happy for him. So chuffed to bits. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
He is really one tough kid. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
He really is one tough little cookie. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
He's in a lot of pain. I can see it on his face. But he'll finish it. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
Crossing the finish line was like a dream come true. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
It was amazing cos I was looking forward to that moment | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
like for six weeks. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
And when I crossed, my mum gave me a cuddle and I got a medal | 0:25:45 | 0:25:50
and I felt so chuffed that I had got a medal for doing it. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
My mum was very emotional at the end | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
because she knew I had a bad leg | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
and I got all the way through this course. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
I felt it was quite embarrassing, really. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
For me, it's been absolutely fantastic. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
The boys have conquered their fears of heights, going through water, | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
pushing themselves to the limit. Can't fault them. Brilliant. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
As the boys thaw out with a hot drink, | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
it's time for the prize-giving, to find out which house won. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
You've been fantastic completing that course. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
The team that has won overall | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
is Ellis. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
They're at the top of the tree. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
'Tough Guy has really changed my life. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
'It's caused me a lot of pain | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
'but now I know I can do it again.' | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
It's made me a tougher person | 0:26:46 | 0:26:48
cos I can go to somebody and say, "Have you done that Tough Guy race?" | 0:26:48 | 0:26:52
And they'll say, "No", and I can tell them about it. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
So I think it's a really good thing. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Jordan's moment of fear may have cost him the race, | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
but it's taught him an important lesson. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
'As I got to a place where there was just single planks, | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
I looked down and I think that's what doubted me. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
I couldn't overcome one fear that I've been overcoming the whole race. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
One thing, by looking down, just doubted me and then I just lost it. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
Next time I'm here, I've got something to achieve, to beat. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:25
I think my dad would be really proud | 0:27:25 | 0:27:27
and I think he'd be like, "Don't worry about what's just happened. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:31
"Just carry on and train and become a better person | 0:27:31 | 0:27:37
"even though you never came first. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
"You win some, you lose some. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:41
"Life isn't always about winning." I think he'd be really proud. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
'I was a 12-year-old boy, | 0:27:46 | 0:27:48
'a normal 12-year-old. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
'But then I became a 12-year-old man, a strong man, | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52
'cos I completed the course.' | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
