I like frogs. Ribbet, ribbet!

And snakes. Ss-ss-ss!

And I love hamsters and their big cheeks.

I do love hamster cheeks but I have to admit I really, really like dogs.

They're so much fun and I love it when they run after their tails.

-Oh, me too, it's great fun.

-Really quickly!

-Whoa!

Some animals can make brilliant pets and pets are great.

We really like meeting you and your pets.

There's a few things that almost all pets need.

Care, exercise and playtime.

Speaking of playtime, what fun are you going to have today?

Today, I'm in Bristol to meet Daisy and her mum, Donna.

I wonder what their pet is.

Let's go find out.

Hi, Ferne, we're over here.

-Hello, Daisy.

-Hello.

-And you must be Donna?

-Yes, hi, Ferne.

Who's this? Is this your pony? He is, isn't he?

He's very nice.

Daisy! Is this his name?

-Yes!

-Is this Frankie? This is Frankie, your pony.

-Yeah!

Wow! I love ponies.

-Daisy communicates using sign language.

-There you go!

Frankie and his neighbour here are ponies.

And that is the name of a type of a small horse.

You can tell the difference quite easily

because ponies' manes and tails are thicker.

Their necks are thicker, and their faces and legs are shorter.

'Daisy doesn't actually own Frankie, he and the other ponies

'are part of a riding school

'that allows everyone to come and ride on a pony.'

-How old is Frankie?

-He's actually 16.

-Do you help look after Frankie?

-Yes, she does.

-Brilliant.

-How long has she been looking after him for?

-For a year now.

-She rides him every Thursday morning for half an hour.

-That is fantastic.

And it's really good exercise for Frankie, too. Ponies love exercise.

Daisy, I love his pink nose and he's got lovely long eyelashes, as well.

And isn't this great because, with the layout of the stables,

Frankie can have a look about and all his friends are here.

Cos horses are very curious and so are ponies.

And they love to have a good look at what's going on.

Ponies are interesting for all sorts of reasons.

Rory, can you tell us some more pony facts about our new friend here?

Of course, Ferne.

Ponies are herbivores. That means they only eat plants.

Boy ponies are called stallions.

Girl ponies are called mares and baby ponies are called foals.

Ponies like to live in groups.

A group of horses or ponies is called a herd.

Ponies can sometimes live up to 30 years or more!

Pets can be cared for in all sorts of ways.

Looking after a pony can be very rewarding and also great fun.

Daisy and I get to watch Toni, who looks after Frankie, clean his feet.

-Do you know what their feet are?

-Yeah.

-They're hooves, aren't they?

That's what ponies and horses' feet are called, hooves.

Do you think his feet are going to be very clean?

Frankie isn't wearing shoes but some horses wear shoes

to protect their feet when they walk on hard surfaces like roads.

But he's OK because he walks in a paddock and around a field

and in a forest, so the ground tends to be quite soft.

So he doesn't need shoes.

Good job, Daisy!

His feet are looking very clean, aren't they? How about we brush him?

Make sure he's nice and soft and get rid of all the old hair.

-I think he likes this.

-Yeah.

Should we give Frankie some food?

Yes. Let's go.

Look at all of this, it's yummy.

These pellets are perfect for ponies.

They're full of vitamins, soya, grains and even some oats.

How about some apple? Daisy, shall we put some apple in as a treat?

Yeah. And what about some carrot?

Carrot.

Perfect.

This looks yummy, doesn't it? A nice little bit of food.

Yum, yum, yum. And we can give this to Frankie later.

-You ready?

-Yeah!

-Yeah.

-You ready? Shall we clean?

-Yeah.

Get rid of all of this.

'Time to clean out Frankie's stall.'

-Is it good? Is that all right?

-Yeah.

-Right, Daisy. Do you want to put all of this on the floor?

-Yeah.

How about here?

Good job.

And it's nice, fresh, clean wood chippings for Frankie, isn't it?

Good for his bed, aren't they?

You do that and I'll get this ready.

It's all clean, isn't it?

Yeah, this is the horse's house.

-It's almost finished, shall we get his food?

-Yeah.

Yeah, we'll get his food and water.

Look at that!

Wow!

It's important for ponies to nibble all the time. It's called grazing.

So, we're just replacing Frankie's old hay net with a new one

with some nice fresh hay for him. All right. Water next.

-Think it's good? Is it good?

-Yeah!

Come on, Frankie, look at your house!

He likes his food.

'When mucking out your pet's bed, or touching your pet,

'it's important to wash your hands, isn't it, Daisy?'

Playtime with your pets is really important

and ponies like Frankie need plenty of exercise.

He's getting lots in his manege, which is similar to a paddock.

Paddocks are a nice big fenced-off areas

where ponies and horses can exercise, play and be safe.

Do you think he's having fun?

Yeah.

Lunging is a name given to a type of exercise

that ponies and horses do as a way of training.

Frankie's really good at it

and it helps him to control his walk in a circle

but also control the speed at which he walks and runs.

It's really good to keep him fit and he really likes it.

Trot on, Frankie.

He's definitely good at lunging. Well done, Frankie.

Oh, here he comes. He's coming for some cuddles.

Cuddle time with your pet is really important

and Daisy just loves cuddling Frankie.

And what about the noise of a horse?

And what about the sound of a horsey's feet?

If Frankie could go on any adventure, what would he do?

Daisy thinks if Frankie could do any job

he would be in charge of making pizzas.

And then delivering all the pizzas on his scooter

to all the children who come to play in the swing park with her.

Daisy and I are going to go for a trek in the woodlands now.

I'm very excited. And this is Barney, he's my horse for today.

I really like him, he's very handsome and I love his colours.

Today, I met Daisy at her riding school

and she introduced me to Frankie the pony.

Daisy has riding lessons on Frankie every week,

and she loves helping to brush him and to wash him.

We also laid out some fresh food and water

and put down some fresh bedding, too.

Then we watched as Frankie was lunging in the manege.

Daisy and I went on a lovely ride through the trees.

That sounds amazing! And you've made some great new friends, too.

Oh, I did, it was wonderful.

It's really important to remember to ask the owner's permission

before you touch any pets.
