Fish! Oh, wow.

They are beautiful.

How many different kinds of fish have we got in here?

Can you tell me what they're called?

Neon tetras and black neon tetras.

-And there looks like a stripy one there, too.

-Yes.

-Is that a zebra danio?

-Yes.

-Very handsome fish, indeed.

What is your favourite?

The neon tetra?

-It's very bright and colourful, isn't it?

-Yes.

And it's good that they're bright colours

cos that means they can see each other in the water.

How many fish have we got in total?

-Ten.

-Ten fish.

That's great that you've got quite a few fish in here.

-Do you know what a group of fish is called?

-Erm...no.

It's called a shoal.

It's great to be in a shoal

because it means that you can look out for danger together

and you can also find food together.

What else have you got in here, apart from fish?

I can see a little creature here. What's that?

A water snail.

A water snail! What is the water snail doing against the glass?

-He's eating some algae.

-Eating algae!

So, these snails help to clean the tank?

-Yes.

-That's really handy.

And that snail does, as well.

Oh, a big one, too.

So you've got some small ones and big ones?

Yeah, two big ones and I don't know where the other one is.

It's hiding from you, just now.

-Could be in the shark's mouth.

-In the shark's mouth?

That seems dangerous. Have you got a shark in there?

-It's not real.

-Phew!

I was a bit worried you had a real shark in your tank.

And it was going to try and eat all the fish. Phew!

Well, I love your fish, Paddy.

They're very beautiful. I like them a lot.

Ferne, can you tell us fishy facts

about our lovely, colourful new friends here?

'Of course, Rory.

'Fish come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes.

'Some are very small, like this little clownfish.

'And whale sharks, like this one, are the biggest fish in the world.

'Tropical fish can be really colourful, like these ones.

'Wow! Aren't they beautiful?

'Some fish can glide above the water. It looks like they're flying.

'Wowee!'

Fish, especially tropical fish, like Paddy's,

can be tricky to look after, so it's important that you know

what you're doing before you get them.

Paddy, what do we have to do to look after the fish?

We have to clean the tank.

OK, what do we need to do first?

We have to take the water out.

Yes, we're going to take a bit out and put some fresh water in.

Tap water is not great for fish, so we need to put

some of this special stuff in to make it right for them.

You keep me right here, Mum. I'm going to put a few drops in.

-I put a little bit in the lid. Is that right?

-Some in the lid.

Okey-doke.

There we go. Place that down there.

I'm going to use this little thing, it's called a syringe,

to take out two millimetres.

There we go.

I'm going to pop this into our water from the tap

to make it safe for the fish.

OK, we'll just leave that there.

What do we do next, Paddy?

We take some of the old water out.

-How many jugs?

-Three.

Three jugs? Right. Will you help me count?

These are tropical fish, of course, aren't they?

And this water is nice and warm, just right for them.

OK, what do we do now, Paddy?

Clean the sponge.

OK, the sponge out of this filter here.

Let me take this out.

-Are we cleaning it in here?

-Yes.

-Do you want to give me a hand?

-Put your hands in there.

-Yes.

Squeeze that out. That's it.

Get all the dirt out of it.

-You've done this quite a few times, haven't you?

OK. Give that a wee squeeze out.

You've got to put the new water in.

What do we do now, Paddy?

-We feed the fish.

-What do we feed them?

-Fish food.

Yes, fish food, because it's got all the nutrients

-and good stuff that the fish need to stay healthy.

-Yes.

Right, you tip some of that into my hand.

Take a pinch of that.

And how many times do you feed them a day, Paddy?

Once a day.

-They're enjoying that.

-Yeah, I think they love it!

That's been a very successful feed.

I've got fish fingers.

-Oh, we better wash our hands, then.

It is difficult to have play time with a fish

because they're in a tank and you can't really take them out,

and you can't even get them a cuddle.

But what's really interesting is watching them

as they swim because they're very beautiful

-and so colourful, don't you think?

-Yeah.

I think we should try and match the fish,

get nice and colourful and have a bit of a neon party.

-What do you think?

-Yeah!

Yeah, they're super speedy!

So, if your fish could do anything, what would they do?

If my pets could do anything, they'd be racing car drivers.

They would have cars with neon stripes on the side.

They would drive all around the world.

They would win all the big racing competitions.

They could be so fast.

They're go faster stripes.

Paddy's fish are special tropical fish,

so they couldn't live in the wild in this country.

But our ponds and rivers are full of small fish,

so it's worth having a good look for them.

We've come to this lovely pond today to do just that.

This is a special pond-dipping platform and it is perfect for us

to find some fish and other creatures in the pond here.

Now, Paddy, shall we get going?

-Yes!

-Nets at the ready!

Let's start pond-dipping.

Give it a good sweep.

because they spend a lot of time in the water when they're young.

When they're adults, they spend more time out of the water.

But they always have to be close to the water

because they are amphibians.

Yes, we always put wild creatures back where we found them.

Today, I met Paddy and his tropical fish.

Together, we cleaned their tank and gave them some food.

We had a groovy neon tetra disco,

then we went pond-dipping and Paddy caught a newt!

That sounds wonderful and you made some great friends as well.

Yeah, pets are great.

But, remember, before you touch any animal,

make sure it's OK with the owner first.

That's right, but one pet you can play with is ours.
