Today, we're in County Antrim in Northern Ireland

to meet Sophia and her pet.

I think she lives just up this path.

What a beautiful farm you live on.

It's amazing! You're so lucky. I love farm animals.

So, where are your pets?

You just have to mo-o-ove around the corner.

Ruby.

Ruby. Hello, Ruby.

She's a calf, isn't she?

And a calf is a baby cow.

Hello. How old is Ruby?

Six weeks old.

She's very young, isn't she? She's so big.

How can you tell the difference

between Ruby and other black-and-white calves?

Well, it's because there's a diamond on the front of her face

and she's got a line on her back.

There are these tags, as well.

What are they for?

They're for whenever the cow goes to a different place...

..we've got this number still.

-OK. So, what's Ruby's mummy called?

-A cow.

-And her daddy?

-Bull.

-So, where is Ruby's mummy?

-Over in the milking parlour.

The milking parlour?

Shall we mo-o-ove over there and check it out? Come on.

Wow! Sophia, look at all these happy working cows!

-And who's that working over there?

-My daddy.

-That's your daddy? Hi!

So, does your daddy look after Ruby's mummy?

Which one is Ruby's mummy?

Hello. Their diamonds are kind of similar, aren't they?

And Ruby's mummy has a little stripe on her back.

-So, what is a group of cows called?

-A herd.

And why is your happy herd eating so much grass?

To make milk.

-You are going to get lots of milk from this herd, aren't you?

-Yeah.

Rory, can you tell us some mo-o-ore facts

about our happy cow friends here?

Of course, Ferne. One...

Cows like living in groups.

Two...

Some cows have long, thick hair

to keep them extra warm in the rain and snow.

Three...

Cows have a very good sense of smell

and can smell food from a long way away.

So, what do you have to do to look after little Ruby?

Clean out her bed, give her lots of milk and water, and feed her well.

Wow! That is a long list of things to do.

-Can I help you out today?

-Yeah.

-Shall we go and make Ruby a nice new bed?

-Yeah.

-Lift all the dirty stuff.

That's a really good idea, because Ruby's stall

isn't looking or smelling too good right now, is it?

Almost ready, Ruby.

Cows actually only have teeth on the very bottom of their mouth,

so they use their nice, long tongues to pull out the hay.

-Should we see if Ruby wants some milk?

-Yeah.

Oh, she loves that, doesn't she?

-She's drinking it really fast.

-She is. She's a thirsty cow.

-She also drinks water as well, though, doesn't she?

-Yeah.

Cows drinking a lot of water.

She's got a nice, clean bed, yummy hay and yummy milk. She's so lucky!

Mo-o-os flash!

Caring for your pet is very important,

but myself and Sophia have an extra special report.

Making sure they get plenty of exercise

and playing with your pet is just as important.

And it's fun.

Later on today, Ruby has been entered into a cow show

and we have to make her look pretty.

-How are we going to do that?

-Use lots of soapy bubbles.

-Sounds good.

Bath time.

She's going to smell nice, isn't she?

We have to wash these knees!

Make sure you're nice and clean.

-What should we do next?

-Brush her.

-I'll do the hooves.

-Are you sure? OK.

You're doing a really good job, Sophia.

She's really liking this.

It's almost like we're giving her a little massage.

Does she like cuddles?

Aw.

-I think she'd look really nice with a bow in her hair.

-Yeah.

-Shall we get her one?

-Yeah. She can borrow one of mine.

That is a brilliant idea!

-Shall we let her dry off, and then go get a bow?

-Yeah.

-OK.

-There. That's lovely, isn't it? I think she's ready.

-Yeah.

So, what do you have to do at the cow show?

Lead her around the ring slowly,

so that the judges can see me. OK.

-So, shall we have a practice?

-Yeah. Mummy and you can be the judge.

That sounds really good!

-Do you think me and Ruby did well?

-Definitely!

If eating grass will be Ruby's job,

-do you think she'd like to go on holidays?

-Yeah.

-Where would she like to go on holidays to?

-Somewhere sunny.

If my pet Ruby went on holiday,

she would enjoy being on the beach,

because she lies down a lot.

She will be on a towel wearing sunglasses and shorts,

and have a huge ice cream

that she can lick with her big tongue.

I love ice cream! Do you think there will be ice cream at the cattle show?

-Yeah!

-Shall we go and see?

-Yeah!

This place is great!

I've never seen so many different types of cattle before.

They come in all these different colours.

I've seen some big cows and tiny calves,

but I haven't seen any ice cream yet.

-I love your outfit, Sophia!

-Thank you.

-It's for shows.

-Do you think Ruby is a bit nervous?

-Yeah.

-Oh, I hope not.

I think she's going to do a great job.

-It's almost time for the show, isn't it? Should we go?

It's a shame she couldn't wear these bows, but she still looks good.

-It won't be long before Ruby's milk is making ice cream, will it?

Oh, it was so much fun! Let me tell you all about!

Today, I met Sophia and her calf Ruby.

Sophia showed me how she cleans and makes a new bed for Ruby.

We then gave Ruby a good wash for the cow show.

And Mum and I watched as Sophia practised her walking with Ruby.

At the cow show, we saw lots of different calves.

And Ruby and Sophia won a beautiful rosette.

Wow! That sounds amazing!

-And you made some great new friends, too.

-I did, indeed.
