Today, we are in Yorkshire to meet Felix and Hugo.

I'm surrounded by farms here

and I think they live on this one here with their pet.

I wonder what it could be? Let's go and find out, shall we?

-I'm looking for Felix and Hugo.

-They're on their way.

-Ah, so they don't live here.

-No, they don't.

-But does their pet live here?

-He certainly does.

Oh, look, here they come now.

-Oh, is that your sister?

-Yeah.

-We're going to see our pet, do you want to come?

-So, you still haven't told me what your pet is.

-It's a pony.

A pony, amazing! I love ponies. Can I have a shot of riding him?

-No, you're too big.

-I'm too big?! Well, where is it?

-He's behind you.

-There's no pony there.

Wow, look at this little guy!

Oh, wow, I'm going to go and say hello.

-So, what's his name?

-Jake.

Jake, that's a lovely name. Why is he so small?

-Because he's a Shetland pony.

-That's right, he's a Shetland pony.

Shetland ponies are one of the smallest breeds of pony.

They're also one of the strongest for their size.

They can pull something about twice their weight!

They're named after the Shetland Isles in the north of Scotland,

where they're originally from, long before Jake was born.

-How old is Jake?

-14 years.

-14, oh, wow.

Look at his dark brown coat, isn't it nice?

Shetland ponies have short legs and long,

shaggy coats that change thickness depending on the season.

Shetland ponies are interesting for all sorts of reasons.

Ferne, can you give us some pony facts?

Of course, Rory!

Shetland ponies eat grass and other plants

and they love apples as a special treat.

Some Shetland ponies grow a double coat in winter to help

protect them from the rain and snow.

Some Shetland ponies love to roll in the sand. What fun!

Shetland ponies come in lots of different colours.

Brown, beige, black, grey, and a mix of colours.

We all love our pets and it's important to show them just how much.

We can do that by caring for them and making them very happy.

How do you care for Jake, Felix?

I brush him, I clean out his stable,

I feed him, I give him water.

That all sounds very important,

shall we do some of it now?

So, how often do you brush him?

Every day before he goes out to ride.

Oh, so he looks nice and clean and tidy before you go for a ride?

Ponies love being brushed and groomed

and it's a great way to bond with your pet as well.

It keeps them looking good,

and nice and clean and healthy. It's very good for their skin.

Well, I think Jake is looking fantastic. What do we need to do now?

-Clean out his stable.

-Brilliant, let's do it then.

What do we need to do first?

First, we need to clean up the poo

and to do that, we need to use these rakes.

OK.

-Right. That looks good, what now?

-Hang up the bag of food.

Very heavy, well done. Let me give you a hand. OK.

-There you go. What do you think, will Jake like that?

-Yes.

He likes his food, doesn't he? Some water, lovely.

-I think we should get Jake in to see if he likes it.

-Yeah, we should.

Let's go and get him, come on.

-I think he likes it.

-Me too, he seems very happy, doesn't he?

-Yeah.

What do we do after we've cleaned out our pets' mucky beds?

-Wash our hands.

-That's right, let's go and do it.

Look at Jake over there, he's really enjoying his food. What is he eating?

-Grass.

-Mmm, grass.

-Plants.

-Plants as well. That's called forage, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-What else do you give him to eat?

-Dry food.

That sounds perfect and with this apple as well, as a treat,

-that's the perfect balanced diet, isn't it?

-Yes.

-Shall we see if he wants an apple now?

-Yes.

-Right, let's call him over.

-Jake!

-Jake, come and get your food.

-Jake, come and get some apple.

-Come on. Jake, come on. Good boy.

-Jake!

Playing with your pet and giving them

plenty of exercise is really important.

I can't wait to see Jake showing off his skills in this pony playground.

And look! Auntie Charley's giving a helping hand.

Wow, Jake's looking very smart.

You are too, Hugo. That's it, Jake, are you ready? Oh, one! Number two...

Oh, did it!

Well done, Jake. All three, no problem.

Yeah, look at that.

Horses and ponies need a paddock just like this one to get

plenty of exercise with other horses as often as possible.

Well done, Hugo. I'm coming to get you.

-Well done, Jake, you'll be great at the pony show.

-Pony show?

-You're going to a pony show? Can I come?

-Yes.

-Oh, brilliant.

-Will I just wear these clothes?

-No, it's a fancy dress.

-What are we going to wear?

-It's a surprise.

-Oh, OK.

Well, let's go and get ready then.

Well, howdy, partners. What do you think?

-Good.

-Good?! You mean fantastic!

Well, I think cowboys are the perfect outfits for riding on horses,

aren't they? I'm only sad that I'm just too big to ride on Jake.

-You can ride on the bigger horses.

-Yes! That's great.

Well, come on, let's go.

This is great fun, I love being dressed up as a cowboy.

-It looks like Jake's having loads of fun as well, doesn't it?

-Yes.

Now, if Jake could do anything or go anywhere, what do you think he'd do?

Erm...

If my pet could go anywhere,

he would go to Mars in a black flying saucer.

So that no-one could see a pony flying a spaceship.

Jake would wear a space suit for horses

and play catch with Pluto, the dwarf star.

-This show is great, isn't it?

-Yes, and there's lots of people.

And they're in all sorts of different costumes!

We'd better go and get ready

because the competition's about to begin. Come on.

So, all you've got to do is walk round the ring

and the judges will give you points, OK? Do you think you can do that?

-Yes.

-OK, all the best. You can do it, Jake! Off you go.

They're doing very well.

Felix is doing a great job on Jake.

Oh, here come the other riders. Some great costumes out there.

It was amazing, wait till I tell you all about it.

Today, I met Felix and Hugo and the Shetland pony, Jake.

Felix showed me how to brush him, then we cleaned out where he sleeps.

We took Jake out to the field and watched him forage.

We went riding round the paddock. Then, we dressed up as cowboys

and went for a ride along the lane,

then to the pony show.

That sounds wonderful, and you made some great friends.

Yeah, pets are great.

Before you touch any animal,

make sure it's OK with the owner first.

That's right, but, one pet you can play with is ours!
