We've been cleaning the barn for the animals.

Today, we're in Rugeley to meet Thomas and his goldfish.

Shall we go and find them? Come on.

-Hi.

-Now, I hear that you've got a goldfish. Is that right?

-Yes.

-Come inside and I'll show you.

-Let's go then.

Wow. So, these are your goldfish.

What are their names?

-Tails, there, and Sonic and Boggles.

-Boggles.

I think I could have guessed which one was Boggles

because look at that fish.

Now, he is called a bubble eye fish and it's easy to see why.

They've always got those funny eyes. Can you do an impression of one?

With bulgy eyes.

THEY LAUGH

That was very good.

And did you know that goldfish don't have eyelids,

so they can't close their eyes? It's amazing, isn't it?

That means they sleep with their eyes open.

-Can you imagine doing that?

-No.

It's important that you make sure it gets dark

at some point during the day.

Do you do that for your goldfish?

-Yep, and I've got a night light.

-Oh.

-Turn that on.

-Oh, perfect.

So, you can change the colour of the light for evening.

I like that a lot. That's very fancy.

So, we've got Sonic as well. Why is Sonic called Sonic?

-Because he's really fast.

-Oh, I thought that might be why.

And he looks like a common goldfish.

And we also have our friend Tails. Why's he called that?

-Because he has two tails.

-Oh, I see.

And he looks like a very special kind of goldfish

called a fantail goldfish.

They're very beautiful with those big,

-long tail fins, aren't they?

-Yes.

-How long have you had your goldfish for?

-One year.

-Just one year?

Hopefully you'll have them for many more

because goldfish can live over ten years, if you look after them.

I'm glad to see that you've got three in the tank

-because goldfish love to live in little groups.

-Yeah.

People think that goldfish can't remember very much,

but that is not true. Actually, they can learn things.

If you feed your goldfish at the same time every day,

they'll remember and wait for you.

What is the best thing about your goldfish?

-Watching them swim around.

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-Yeah.

It's very relaxing watching them.

Ferne, can you give us some facts about goldfish,

just like Boggles, Sonic and Tails?

Of course, Rory.

One.

A goldfish's teeth are not in their mouth, but, actually,

in the back of their throat, and these teeth help them to crush food.

Two - a group of goldfish is called a troubling.

That's a funny word, isn't it?

Three -

goldfish have a coating on their scales that helps

keep them healthy, so it's important we don't touch them.

We don't want to rub it off.

-WOOF

-Care Time!

A lot of people think goldfish are easy to keep,

but they do need to be cared for, just like any other pet.

Cos they live in a tank, they're entirely reliant on you to

make sure everything is just right.

-So, Thomas, how do you look after your goldfish?

-Clean them out.

Oh, that sounds very important because goldfish eat a lot,

which means they poo a lot.

They do. So, that means that every single week you have to clean

out your goldfish, don't you?

What do we have to do to clean them out?

-Wipe the sides.

-What do we use for that?

-We get this big sponge.

Wow.

Sponge on a stick. Great.

Right, I'll have a go first and you can tell me what to do.

-Cleaning inside there.

-OK.

And I need to be very careful not to touch any of the fish

because that could hurt them.

Good work.

OK, that's looking good. What do we need to do next?

Take this out and then we'll have to change the filter.

There's one...

..and there's two.

Goldfish need a tank with a filter to keep the water clean

so they can stay healthy. Right, that's the filters. What's next?

-You have to take some water out.

-OK.

How much water are we taking out?

-To that line.

-OK. That line, right.

This is a lot of water we're taking out, isn't it?

There we are.

There we go. That's it. It's down to that line now.

-OK, what do we need to do now?

-Get some clean water.

-OK, let's go.

OK.

'When changing the water, it must be treated first and then left to

'reach room temperature before pouring it back into the tank.'

-So, Thomas, what have you got in here?

-A plant,

so they can eat and hide in them.

-Eat and hide in them?

-Yep. They like doing that.

-Yeah.

It's important you get the right plants for goldfish

because they should be safe for them. And what else is in there?

There's this big barrel, so that they can sleep in it and hide.

Oh, sleeping and hiding. It's good to have lots of interesting things

in your tank to entertain your goldfish.

OK. That's the tank all filled up.

-And now we have to put the filters in.

-OK.

There we go. What's next?

-And we have to feed them.

-How much do you have to feed them?

A little, tiny bit.

-Just a pinch?

-Yeah.

-And what are you feeding them, Thomas?

-Fish flakes.

Fish flakes, hmm.

And then they should come up now.

'It's a good idea to wait a while after changing the water before

'you feed the fish, so we'll just give them a little treat for now.'

-Great. Do you think they're very happy now?

-Yes.

-What do we need to do?

-Wash our hands.

-We do.

-MEOW

-Wash your hands!

-What are your goldfish doing, Thomas?

-Swimming up and down the glass.

They're having a great time.

If your fish could do anything, what do you think they'd do?

If my pet could do anything, they would be acrobats in the circus.

They would do backflips and go on the high trapeze,

and go on the seesaw. They would make a tall tower, with Sonic at the

bottom, Tails in the middle and Boggles at the top.

-All the crowd would cheer.

We've come on a special trip to the local aquarium to see some

-other fish and underwater creatures. Shall we explore?

-Yeah.

-Let's go.

Do you know what these big, flat fish are, sitting on the bottom?

-Rays.

-Yes, that's right.

It looks like they're flying through the water.

Sometimes they like to sit on the bottom. You see that one?

They're quite different to your goldfish.

Do you know that rays are the same family as sharks?

And they have a special skeleton.

It's not made of bones, it's made of cartilage,

which your ears are made of.

Can you touch your ear? What does that feel like?

Quite bendy, isn't it?

Yeah. That's what their skeletons are made of. Oh! Here comes a ray now!

-Oh.

Oh, look. Look at these guys.

What are they?

These ones are called sunstars. You can see one up here, a little one.

Penguins are birds, but they're not very good at flying.

They're very good at swimming, just like fish, though.

-It's like a penguin show.

-It is like a penguin show, isn't it?

Oh, they're very fast, aren't they?

-Whoa.

-Wow.

Are they not beautiful? Look at them. Look at the jellyfish.

Do you know how old they are? How long they've been on the planet?

They were around before the dinosaurs. 650 million years.

Wow.

-Look at all these fish here.

-They're swimming up on top of us.

Over our heads.

-Look at that big turtle.

-He's huge, isn't he?

-He's almost as big as you. Do you know what his name is?

-What?

It's Molokai and he is almost 40 years old.

That's even older than me.

Look at the sharks. Do you know what these black and white stripy ones

-with the yellow on top are called?

-No.

-Sergeant majors.

You should give them a salute. Yes, sir.

-Look at that ray and his big, smiley face.

-It's coming, look!
