We've been cleaning the barn for animals.

Lots of animals make excellent pets and we love meeting yours.

Today we're in Surrey to meet Sophie and her guinea pigs.

I absolutely love guinea pigs

because they're so cuddly. Shall we go and find them? Come on.

THEY SQUEAK

-Hello.

-Hi, Rory.

-Hi, Sophie. Hi, Mum.

-Hello, how are you?

I'm good. How are you guys?

-These are my guinea pigs.

-They're very lovely.

-What are their names?

-Lolly and Ben.

Oh, they're so cute.

Now, which one is which? We've got one in a tunnel here.

That one's Lolly. That one's Ben.

Oh, they're very, very sweet.

Now, are they brother and sister?

-How do they know each other?

-They're mummy and baby.

-Oh, mummy and baby?

-Yeah.

-But wait a minute. One's called Ben.

-Yeah.

-Ben's a girl?

We thought he was a boy, but he had a baby,

so we found out he was a girl.

Hello. Hello, guys.

They're too busy.

Now, I tell you what, these guys must like playing.

What games do they like to play?

They like to go through some tunnels, like that one.

-So they like playing and hiding in tunnels?

-Yes.

That's not a surprise because guinea pigs are prey animals,

which means, in the wild, there are other animals that try and eat them.

Now, I would like to pick the guinea pigs up.

-Do you think we can do that?

-Yes.

We have to be careful, cos they're prey animals -

they get a fright if you swoop down from above.

You've got to carefully pick them up with your hands from beneath.

Oh, there we go. Look at these two.

-They're lovely, aren't they?

-Yes.

-So, I've got Ben and you've got Lolly there. Is that right?

-Yes.

Listen to them chattering away.

Can you hear them? THEY SQUEAK

-Yes.

-What is your favourite thing about your guinea pigs?

-I like holding them and looking after them.

-Do you?

-Do you like giving them strokes and cuddles?

-Yes.

-Lovely, isn't it?

Have you seen how shiny the coats are? Look at that.

Look at how shiny it is.

It means your guinea pigs are very healthy.

-That's good, isn't it?

-Yes.

What do you think of their little feet?

-Have you seen? Look here.

-Yeah.

-What's on the end of those?

-Sharp nails.

-They can dig and move around with those, can't they?

-Yes.

-That helps them crawl through tunnels and hide.

-And they're very quick at running.

-Are they?

-Yeah.

-Faster than you?

-No.

-You must love them very much. Do you?

-Yes.

Ferne, can you give us some fun facts about our furry friends here?

MOO! MEOW!

A female guinea pig is called a sow,

and a male guinea pig is called a boar.

Guinea pigs are cautious little creatures

and they approach new things carefully.

They use their whiskers first, so they can run away if they need to.

They can also freeze very quickly

if they are scared or worried about anything.

Guinea pigs are very chatty and they love to make lots of noise.

THEY SQUEAK

There we go.

Guinea pigs are very cute,

and they need lots of looking after, just like all pets do.

How do you look after your guinea pigs?

We give them nice food, make sure they don't run off,

-and make sure nothing scares them.

-That's very good, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-Do you keep the hutch nice and clean?

-Yeah.

Shall we give theirs a clean now? Yeah, come on.

We'll leave the guinea pigs to exercise in the run

while we clean out the hutch, where they sleep and eat.

THEY SQUEAK

We need to take everything out.

Everything? All this dirty stuff out?

We'll take them out the way.

'We have to give my guinea pigs fresh hay every day,

'and clean them out completely every week.

'Guinea pigs need a nice big hutch,

'with room for them to run about and stretch up.

'We put in newspaper and pet-safe wood shavings...

'..and then hay for their bed.

'They can eat the hay too.'

-Hey, that reminds me.

-Yeah.

-Looking at this hay -

did you know that guinea pigs' teeth grow for ever?

They keep growing so they need to have hay

-so they can grind them down so they're short. Did you know?

-Yeah.

They sleep on it but also chew it to rub down their teeth.

Imagine if we had teeth like that.

Can you imagine how big our teeth would go?

-They'd be huge, wouldn't they?

-Yeah.

-THEY SQUEAK

-This is looking nice and clean. Are we all done?

-No, look.

-We need to empty out the old food and give them new food.

-Yes.

Tip out this old food.

-Got it.

-Oh, you're very strong.

-There we go.

-That's enough food for them.

Pop that in there.

OK, let's take this off.

Right, let's go.

THEY SQUEAK

'Guinea pigs need fresh water every day.

'Guinea pigs mostly eat grass and hay.'

There we go.

'They also eat fresh fruit and veg, like broccoli and kale.'

THEY SQUEAK

So, we've got the fresh water here. I'll pop that in first.

-And we also have here some fresh vegetables.

-Yeah.

It's a good idea to give guinea pigs fresh veg every day,

so they get the vitamins they need.

It's a treat, so don't give them too much,

and their main diet is grass and hay.

-Shall we pop a couple of bits in?

-Yeah.

-We've got broccoli here.

-Do you want to put that in?

-Yeah, good idea.

It's a good idea to hide vegetables around the cage

so guinea pigs can explore and find them,

but don't forget where they are.

Look out for them so they don't go rotten.

THEY SQUEAK

It's looking fantastic.

-I think it's time we put the guinea pigs inside, don't you?

-Yes.

It's OK. That's it.

Right, I'm going to pop Ben in now. OK, there we go.

Ben's straight in there. Right, let's do all this up.

And the bottom ones.

-There we go. All done. Look. Do you think they're happy?

-Yeah.

Look, somebody pinched that bit of broccoli.

-Who was that?

-Ben.

Was it Ben?

Well done, Sophie. Those guys look very happy.

High-five.

-Sophie, Ben and Lolly are very chatty, aren't they?

-Yeah.

Now, if Ben and Lolly could do anything at all,

what do you think they would do?

DRUMROLL

If my pets could do anything,

-they could be in an orchestra.

-CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYS

They would play the recorder,

and the guitar,

and they would sing.

# La la la la la... #

And they would play in big concert halls to big audiences.

Me and my family will all go and watch them

and at the end we'll give them big claps and cheers.

Sophie, what's your favourite thing to do with your guinea pigs?

I like to play with them and I like to build them a maze.

-That sounds great. Shall we build one now?

-Yeah.

-We've got some food here for them to look for.

-Yeah.

I bet they'll love that. Let's get started.

They can run this side of the run, like that.

Now, remember, it's a treat, so we won't give them too much.

Lolly's found some parsley. Look, it's disappearing.

Yeah.

I think they've just got a one-track mind. They're chasing the food.

Jellybean is having a bit of a cuddle at the minute.

He looks very happy. Pets are brilliant,

but don't touch an animal unless the owner says it's OK.
