Hi, my name is Jersey and this is my school.

:01:54.:01:58.

Everyone gets nervous starting a new secondary school, but it can be

:01:58.:02:02.

harder for those of us who stand out from the crowd. I remember

:02:02.:02:08.

being really nervous. I'm awe autistic which makes me different

:02:08.:02:12.

from most kids. I find it it difficult being around lots of

:02:12.:02:17.

people. I can be sensitive. In this programme, I'm going to find out

:02:17.:02:21.

about how some of you feel about moving up into secondary school and

:02:21.:02:26.

hear some amazing stories about how other kids coped with it.

:02:26.:02:32.

On the first day of my school, I was worried I would get bullied.

:02:32.:02:36.

I was worried that I would be quite lonely.

:02:37.:02:42.

I was thinking, "How am I going to get through this this?" It was OK

:02:42.:02:47.

in the end, I I loved it. Come with me and discover, whoever

:02:47.:02:51.

you are, this huge moment which you might have been dreading can be the

:02:51.:03:00.

best thing ever. No one likes to admit it, but

:03:00.:03:04.

everyone has worries about going to secondary school. In Scotland, the

:03:04.:03:09.

new term started a few weeks ago. These guys know how the first day

:03:09.:03:12.

feels. I couldn't sleep at all last night.

:03:12.:03:17.

I was really excited, but a little nervous in case I get lost.

:03:17.:03:21.

There is a lot of people, more than primary.

:03:21.:03:25.

I didn't really fit in at my last school.

:03:25.:03:31.

Pretty scary. I am now in year ten, but it can be

:03:31.:03:35.

nerve-wracking if you are different. Sometimes because of my autism I

:03:35.:03:39.

can't concentrate and sometimes even worse, the teachers think I am

:03:39.:03:44.

being rude and they get alangry. However, -- angry. However since

:03:44.:03:49.

they know it is not the the case. So it is best to tell people about

:03:50.:03:53.

yourself straightaway. When I was standing outside the

:03:53.:03:58.

gates of high school, I was thinking, "How am I going to get

:03:58.:04:01.

through this?" The children are bigger than in primary school. I

:04:01.:04:07.

thought, "This is going to be bad.". My name is Daniel. I am 12 and I

:04:07.:04:16.

have restricted growth. I am 1.2 meters tall which is under

:04:16.:04:20.

four foot. At primary school, there were a lot younger children and

:04:20.:04:25.

they don't understand. They just used to wit per to their friends or

:04:25.:04:30.

something -- whisper to their friends and call me nastly names

:04:30.:04:35.

like a midget and laugh at me. I felt really sad and upset.

:04:35.:04:40.

When I was going to move up to high school, I thought it would be the

:04:40.:04:45.

same with people making fun of me. I was trying to say I didn't want

:04:45.:04:50.

to go to school to my dad. My feign fears he was a small

:04:50.:04:55.

person going into a big world. That's why we did the letter for

:04:55.:05:05.
:05:05.:05:05.

the school. Because of his size children and adults might treat

:05:05.:05:08.

Daniel as though he is younger than he is.

:05:08.:05:10.

However, there will be occasions when he will need help.

:05:10.:05:14.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping all our children

:05:14.:05:20.

to have a happy and fulfilling life at school and beyond.

:05:20.:05:25.

I felt very pleased about sending the letter, but when I was standing

:05:25.:05:29.

outside the gates of high school, my dad had just dropped me and I'm

:05:29.:05:33.

really nervous. I don't know what to do. I don't know where to go. I

:05:33.:05:40.

was wrig and was crying and I held on to my dad, "I don't want to go.

:05:40.:05:47.

I don't want to go." I thought it was going to be as bad as I thought,

:05:47.:05:51.

but it was OK in the end. Since they sent that letter, all the

:05:51.:05:55.

people, they understand about my condition. They don't mind helping

:05:55.:06:02.

me at all. A lot of children in the upper years were given him high

:06:02.:06:06.

fives saying, "We'll look out for you." I thought he might be a bit

:06:06.:06:11.

different, but once you get to know him, he is another friend.

:06:11.:06:14.

He is funny. You can trust him.

:06:14.:06:18.

A good player at hide-and-seek. He is a really good friend.

:06:18.:06:27.

I don't want to be tall. I love my condition. I loved it. It has been

:06:27.:06:34.

great. Daniel were very worried -- like

:06:34.:06:39.

Daniel my mum and dad were worried about me moving up into secondary

:06:39.:06:41.

school. We had to say goodbye at the door.

:06:41.:06:47.

That was hard because I walked you down to school.

:06:47.:06:54.

You stalked me! But you spotted me in the hedgerow!

:06:54.:07:03.

Once I was at school, I believed everybody told the trust and meant

:07:03.:07:05.

what they said, but that wasn't always the case.

:07:05.:07:12.

Because of my autism, students sometimes treat me like a baby

:07:12.:07:15.

which can be frustrating, but some kids who stand out, can have a

:07:15.:07:20.

tougher time than I did. Secondary school can be a scary prospect and

:07:20.:07:23.

one of the biggest worries is bullying.

:07:23.:07:28.

On my first day of going to high school, my worry would I get

:07:28.:07:31.

bullied because I was different. I didn't think I would make any new

:07:31.:07:34.

friends. This is Calum, he is 12 years old

:07:34.:07:38.

and and like me, he looks like any other kid his age. But problems

:07:38.:07:45.

with his eyesight made life at school difficult. I have got a

:07:45.:07:55.
:07:55.:07:59.

number of conditions. My eyes are bad because of the

:08:00.:08:05.

connection with the brain from the eye. If you like show me like a

:08:05.:08:10.

busy picture with a cat in the middle, I probably wouldn't see it

:08:10.:08:15.

or I would see it, but as something different. Before I went to high

:08:15.:08:20.

school, I did worry about standing out because if I got bullied

:08:20.:08:24.

because I wouldn't be able to see if I approached people and if they

:08:24.:08:28.

were coming to bully you or coming to be your friend or something. It

:08:28.:08:35.

was just a blur of colour. Calum settled in in well on his first day,

:08:35.:08:42.

but his poor eyesight soon caused him problems outs of the classroom.

:08:42.:08:46.

People take advantage of my eyesight. It makes me feel singled

:08:46.:08:49.

out. 123450 when he had difficult

:08:49.:08:54.

situations at school, it makes him stressed and he gets angry and

:08:54.:08:59.

sometimes doesn't want to go to school. It has been like quite

:08:59.:09:03.

upsetting because it is me, like they have been doing it at me and

:09:03.:09:07.

they used to do it a lot. Thankfully the school stepped in

:09:08.:09:13.

and sorted out the bullying. Since then, things have been better

:09:13.:09:19.

for Calum and he has got confident enough to cycle through the park to

:09:19.:09:22.

school, with a little help from his friends.

:09:22.:09:27.

When I was diagnosed with my eye conditions, the doctors told my mum

:09:27.:09:32.

I wouldn't be able to cycle. My mum pushed me to cycle when I was young.

:09:32.:09:38.

My friends help me out by telling me if there is someone in front of

:09:38.:09:42.

me or telling me where we are going, rather than leaving me with no clue

:09:43.:09:49.

with where we are going. I'm not going let my eyesight hold me back.

:09:49.:09:54.

Life Life can be tough for kids who are zirch and I should know. -- all

:09:54.:09:59.

the kids in my family stand out for one reason or another. My brother

:09:59.:10:05.

has autism, while my sister has a rare condition which means she has

:10:05.:10:08.

physical problems and learning difficulties.

:10:08.:10:12.

I was born into a family with special needs and I didn't think it

:10:12.:10:16.

was that big a deal until I realised that not everybody lives

:10:17.:10:21.

with these disabilities. I love them. I love love them very much,

:10:21.:10:26.

but for families like us, even going out for a meal meal can bring

:10:26.:10:33.

a set of problems. People look at Daisy and Lenny and

:10:33.:10:38.

they point like they haven't seen a disabled person before and it

:10:38.:10:41.

really hurts his feelings. It can be tough when you stand out

:10:41.:10:47.

in public. And one of the most public public places in the world

:10:47.:10:57.
:10:57.:10:57.

is school. Meet Aya, she has cerebral palsy. A

:10:57.:11:02.

condition that affects her co- ordination and movement.

:11:02.:11:12.
:11:12.:11:12.

I was born premature. My head got squashed when I was born and that

:11:12.:11:22.
:11:22.:11:23.

damaged my control system and I have cerebral palsy and I'm 13.

:11:23.:11:32.

I feel frustrated that I can't run about and jump and skip and do most

:11:32.:11:41.

things that a normal 13-year-old can do. When I'm getting about and

:11:41.:11:47.

not in my chair, I tend to crawl on the floor like a soldier when they

:11:47.:11:57.
:11:57.:11:59.

are trying to sneak up on someone. I went to a special school in which

:11:59.:12:06.

I made quite a few good friends. But because she was doing so well

:12:06.:12:13.

in special school, Aya left many of the friends behind, making the move

:12:14.:12:17.

to secondary school. Before I went to high school, I had

:12:17.:12:22.

a number of good friends. The amount of homework I was going to

:12:22.:12:28.

get, the amount of children, whether I was going to fit in or

:12:28.:12:34.

not because of the way I look. I was worried that socially I was

:12:34.:12:44.
:12:44.:12:47.

going to be quite lonely. They don't have have the facilities that

:12:48.:12:53.

special schools have and in a way, by throwing her into the cold

:12:53.:12:59.

water... Thanks. By throwing her into the cold water,

:12:59.:13:09.
:13:09.:13:12.

sometimes you would be surprised of the ability that she does have..

:13:12.:13:17.

first day, I was a mixture of excitement and nervous. One of the

:13:17.:13:22.

staff came up and gave me a big hug. I remember she she came back home.

:13:22.:13:28.

She had a big smile on her face. So that was a good thing. There was a

:13:28.:13:35.

smile of, "OK. It is not that scary as I thought it was. I'm still

:13:35.:13:45.
:13:45.:13:46.

alive. I'm still here." At school everybody was a bit wary.

:13:46.:13:55.

They were talking to me. It's still difficult, but I thought it would

:13:55.:14:05.
:14:05.:14:07.

be a lot worse. I think the ice is breaking. I get

:14:07.:14:17.
:14:17.:14:17.

a lot more "hi" I'm not scared. I'm a normal person and they're

:14:17.:14:27.
:14:27.:14:30.

beginning to like me which I'm happy about. I'm happy about that.

:14:30.:14:35.

Life in a new secondary school can be tough, but the good news is most

:14:35.:14:37.

problems disappear after just a few days.

:14:37.:14:41.

It has been a week since I started secondry school and it has been

:14:41.:14:48.

very good. I am happy to go to school every morning.

:14:48.:14:52.

The night bifer started second the night before I started secondary

:14:52.:14:56.
