Well, that's Samson and Goliath over there,

and they can lift 900 tons each,

but they weren't here during Titanic's time.

This was what was known as

a steam crane, and they could have lifted a five-ton load,

bringing steel plate down to the slipways

for the platers to start building the Titanic.

Well, I started here in February of 1948.

You weren't allowed a cup of tea in the morning.

You'd fill the can with water and you'd nip aboard the crane,

and you knew the crane driver,

so he let you boil your water in the boiler.

And he kept his eye out for you

to make sure no manager came on the scene.

Back in the old days, in the Titanic time, they had to do the same,

they had to sneak away to the crane.

There must have been 30, 40, maybe even 50,

steam cranes about the different yards.
