Summer has come to the mountain.

0:00:020:00:04

The midges are brutal today.

0:00:090:00:11

Welcome to Scotland.

0:00:120:00:13

THEY LAUGH

0:00:130:00:14

HE SCREAMS

0:00:150:00:16

This is beautiful.

0:00:160:00:17

HE SCREAMS

0:00:170:00:18

Whee-hee!

0:00:180:00:21

It's been a long, hard winter.

0:00:210:00:23

But the summer season brings thousands of visitors

0:00:250:00:28

to Scotland's top adventure playground.

0:00:280:00:31

THEY SCREAM

0:00:310:00:32

And for the people of Cairngorm, that brings new challenges.

0:00:330:00:37

We've just discovered a gas leak.

0:00:400:00:43

Woooo!

0:00:430:00:44

Stop. Stop, stop, stop, stop.

0:00:440:00:46

In this episode,

0:00:480:00:49

we discover what it takes to make a living from the mountain,

0:00:490:00:52

as Nick puts his team through their paces...

0:00:520:00:55

Got to keep the guys fresh and on it.

0:00:550:00:58

..Ruairi leaves the hill to take on paramedic duties...

0:00:580:01:00

A bit wobbly on your legs.

0:01:000:01:03

We'll get you sitting in the back here.

0:01:030:01:06

HE IMITATES HORN BLOWING

0:01:060:01:07

..and a strange herd of wild animals descends on Aviemore.

0:01:070:01:11

-We're on safari!

-SHE LAUGHS

0:01:110:01:13

Welcome to summer on the mountain.

0:01:130:01:17

Whoa! Windy up here.

0:01:170:01:20

On Cairngorm, summer is well under way.

0:01:340:01:36

The ski lifts may be closed but the adventure-seekers still come.

0:01:370:01:41

It's just beautiful. When it's like this, it's amazing.

0:01:450:01:48

Absolutely love it.

0:01:480:01:49

Mike Gale first came to the mountain for the skiing,

0:01:490:01:52

but like so many others, once here, he couldn't leave.

0:01:520:01:56

Yeah, coming from Yorkshire originally,

0:01:560:01:58

living next to a city in Leeds -

0:01:580:01:59

when you compare it to this, I mean, there is no comparison.

0:01:590:02:02

This is just amazing, you know?

0:02:020:02:04

Mike's not alone in enjoying all that Cairngorm can offer.

0:02:040:02:08

Most people who come to live here do so for the lifestyle,

0:02:080:02:11

and the freedoms of the great outdoors.

0:02:110:02:14

Quite lucky to live and work up here,

0:02:170:02:19

despite the weather being bonkers.

0:02:190:02:21

Enjoying the lifestyle is one thing

0:02:450:02:47

but making a year-round living from the mountain

0:02:470:02:49

takes ingenuity and determination.

0:02:490:02:52

That was a bit bumpy!

0:02:540:02:56

Fresh air doesn't put bread on the table.

0:02:570:03:00

The plan now is to pack up and go back to the office and do some work.

0:03:020:03:06

That was basically an extended lunch break. Good, eh?

0:03:060:03:09

15 years ago, Mike and his partner Nick Etheridge turned their hobby

0:03:110:03:14

into a business and started a winter adventure sports company.

0:03:140:03:19

They quickly found they needed to diversify

0:03:190:03:22

to see them through the summer.

0:03:220:03:23

Now rafting, canyoning and kayaking are where they make their money.

0:03:250:03:29

I think almost the early years we had, it was hard finding the work.

0:03:300:03:35

Now the work is coming to us,

0:03:360:03:38

so it's keeping up to the work that's probably the hardest thing.

0:03:380:03:41

We're having to work like crazy through summer, nowadays.

0:03:410:03:44

Oh, man, look at it. Stonking out there.

0:03:440:03:46

Busy is good, but a fully booked summer does mean

0:03:480:03:50

they don't have much time for their children and families.

0:03:500:03:54

Holidays, when the kids are all off...

0:03:540:03:56

And the wife works at the school

0:03:560:03:58

so when she's on holidays, we're busy, so unfortunately, you know,

0:03:580:04:01

the kids are never going to go on holiday with us.

0:04:010:04:03

We're never going to take time off.

0:04:030:04:05

BUZZING

0:04:050:04:08

BLEATING

0:04:080:04:10

BIRDS CHIRP

0:04:120:04:14

Elsewhere in the valley,

0:04:160:04:18

another small business is working hard to keep up with demand.

0:04:180:04:22

The summer has been exceptionally busy this year.

0:04:220:04:24

We've seemed to just not really had our feet on the ground at all.

0:04:240:04:30

Polly and Ross Cameron run a self-catering business

0:04:300:04:33

and offer weddings and workshops as well.

0:04:330:04:36

We've taken on a lot and I think in some respects

0:04:360:04:38

maybe a little bit too much, this year.

0:04:380:04:40

We're starting to realise it's best to develop

0:04:400:04:43

as you have the time to take new things on.

0:04:430:04:45

Running a business from home sounds idyllic, but does mean

0:04:450:04:49

it's difficult to separate work from bringing up their two young boys.

0:04:490:04:52

'It's really hard because we're developing a business'

0:04:520:04:54

which needed a lot of investment.

0:04:540:04:57

Just always looking at -

0:04:570:04:58

what money we've got to spend on the next stage.

0:04:580:05:01

So we're finding that, right now, the boys ain't getting what they

0:05:010:05:04

need and the business isn't getting fully what it needs.

0:05:040:05:07

As part of their business, the couple are also involved in organising

0:05:070:05:11

the Insider, a very local music festival.

0:05:110:05:14

It's bringing brilliant music to beautiful places

0:05:140:05:19

with great things to drink and eat. Basically.

0:05:190:05:25

But it's also consistently run at a loss.

0:05:250:05:28

This year, Polly and her fellow organiser, Gordy Riley,

0:05:280:05:32

are taking an ambitious gamble.

0:05:320:05:34

They plan to hold the festival in not one

0:05:340:05:37

but five different locations across the Spey Valley.

0:05:370:05:40

They've been planning it for six months.

0:05:400:05:43

I think it's going to be great.

0:05:430:05:44

I just love the fact that no-one really knows what they're in for.

0:05:440:05:47

-Including us.

-Including us, yeah.

0:05:470:05:50

Now there's just 24 hours to go.

0:05:510:05:54

Got a bit of a carload but should fit it in.

0:05:540:05:57

Polly's still got a lot to do.

0:05:570:05:59

Sausages for the barbecue.

0:06:010:06:04

OK. Perfect.

0:06:040:06:06

Thanks for the chips!

0:06:060:06:07

Thank you.

0:06:100:06:11

Because of this multiple-venue thing, the logistics are just a brain ache.

0:06:110:06:16

About where everything should be and what needs to be there.

0:06:170:06:22

Gordy and fellow organiser Ray Baker are off to dress the village hall,

0:06:240:06:28

just one of the five venues.

0:06:280:06:31

Window!

0:06:310:06:32

Once you get to this stage, decorating stuff's a distraction.

0:06:320:06:35

It's kind of fun.

0:06:350:06:37

It's just nice not to be staring at a computer for a while.

0:06:370:06:40

Ross is back at home, decorating their woods for the final location.

0:06:400:06:45

Being organised, that's something we need to get better at.

0:06:450:06:49

Like not getting to the top of the ladder with a lantern that

0:06:490:06:52

doesn't have a hook on it. That's just not organised, is it?

0:06:520:06:56

I've got to go to Mountain Cafe, who've loaned me a deep-fat fryer.

0:06:580:07:04

-That is a life-saver.

-All in working order.

0:07:040:07:08

And then I have to drop beer off to One Pot Borrowed.

0:07:080:07:12

And then I have to go up to Inshriach with 200 sausages and maybe some backup cider.

0:07:140:07:20

I think they're going to need a bit more than I've given them already.

0:07:200:07:24

Tick.

0:07:280:07:29

Where next?

0:07:300:07:32

The kitchen of the village hall.

0:07:320:07:34

Hello?

0:07:340:07:36

Drop off the deep-fat fryer...

0:07:360:07:38

Smells delicious!

0:07:380:07:39

Oh!

0:07:410:07:42

..and grab a moment with the children.

0:07:440:07:46

Gordy takes care of the beer delivery.

0:07:500:07:53

Cleaned you out.

0:07:530:07:55

Did we mention that the festival theme is a jungle safari?

0:07:550:07:58

It looks great.

0:07:580:08:01

I think once everything else is in place

0:08:010:08:03

it's going to look pretty jungley. Which is the plan.

0:08:030:08:05

All the stuff will pretty much be done tomorrow, now,

0:08:050:08:08

all the little bits. The little snags.

0:08:080:08:10

So hopefully we're going to go out for dinner now.

0:08:100:08:13

LAUGHTER

0:08:130:08:17

Aaaargh!

0:08:260:08:28

Whee-hee!

0:08:280:08:30

It's been four years since Mike and Nick opened the Zip Trek Park -

0:08:350:08:39

an adrenaline junkie's version of a stroll in the forest.

0:08:390:08:43

It's proved a major money-earner for them.

0:08:430:08:46

But with success comes the problems of keeping it fully staffed,

0:08:480:08:52

and keeping the staff fully trained.

0:08:520:08:54

The enjoyment used to come from going out and being on the coalface,

0:08:540:08:57

so to speak - taking the clients out, interacting with them,

0:08:570:09:00

having a really good time.

0:09:000:09:01

Now the enjoyment is any staff training or, you know,

0:09:010:09:04

working with the guys that have been with us for a few years,

0:09:040:09:07

and helping them develop.

0:09:070:09:09

Wheee!

0:09:110:09:12

Conner Black has spent a couple of summers helping out.

0:09:140:09:17

That's rather special. Well done, buddy!

0:09:170:09:19

Just braking him, so as the rope comes in,

0:09:190:09:23

I'm just going to use my hands to gauge how much to grip it.

0:09:230:09:25

That's how it works.

0:09:250:09:26

He's learning the ropes on the zip lines

0:09:260:09:29

and getting trained up to become a full-time instructor.

0:09:290:09:32

OK to go, Conner.

0:09:340:09:36

Whoops.

0:09:360:09:37

RADIO BLEEPS

0:09:370:09:39

Was that a "ugh" or a "yeah" or a "no"?

0:09:390:09:42

'Yeah.'

0:09:420:09:43

Yeah.

0:09:430:09:44

He's changing the craic.

0:09:460:09:48

-RESEARCHER:

-And what happens if you're not here?

-They hit the trees.

0:09:510:09:55

To work full-time for the company, Conner needs to be able to

0:09:570:10:01

take clients safely through a wide range of adventure sports.

0:10:010:10:04

He's off to the river with Nick to hone a few more skills.

0:10:040:10:09

Nick's a Level Three instructor with over 12 years' rafting experience.

0:10:090:10:13

You couldn't get any better, I don't think.

0:10:130:10:16

I think I'm probably at the top of my game in every respect,

0:10:160:10:19

you know, physically as well as mentally.

0:10:190:10:23

I'm just basically on it all the time.

0:10:230:10:25

Conner's in the best possible hands.

0:10:270:10:30

Conner, with us, has done a couple of summers now,

0:10:300:10:32

and he's just slowly getting better.

0:10:320:10:34

He just recently did his first raft guide training course.

0:10:340:10:36

To start with, I'm keen for Charlie and Conner

0:10:360:10:39

to guide the first section, if you can.

0:10:390:10:42

Just get us in, get us warmed up, get us practised,

0:10:420:10:45

and then we'll talk about how we run this first rapid, eh?

0:10:450:10:48

In one week's time, Conner has a rafting assessment.

0:10:480:10:52

Nick's working on his technique.

0:10:520:10:54

So, you need to think, you know, shouting at various people

0:10:540:10:57

in the boat, to stop paddling or paddle more, to correct the angle.

0:10:570:11:01

'We just try to get them

0:11:010:11:03

'a little bit more aware of the current doing the work for them.

0:11:030:11:07

'So, a lot of the time,'

0:11:070:11:09

we're trying to work against nature,

0:11:090:11:11

and trying to work against the current to manoeuvre the boat,

0:11:110:11:14

and lots of effort, lots of paddling,

0:11:140:11:16

whereas I'm trying to get these guys a bit more subtle

0:11:160:11:18

with their manoeuvres, to allow the current to do a lot of the work.

0:11:180:11:21

It makes it a lot easier on yourself, and on your client.

0:11:210:11:24

You're not shouting at them to paddle hard all the time.

0:11:240:11:26

It makes it a bit easier, unlike that.

0:11:260:11:28

If Conner gets through his assessment,

0:11:320:11:34

he'll become a fully qualified rafting instructor.

0:11:340:11:38

'Aye, there's a bit of experience there,'

0:11:380:11:40

but they could have a lot more experience

0:11:400:11:43

and be a little bit better.

0:11:430:11:44

'The guys did really well. They're on it.

0:11:480:11:50

'They're managing to get the raft were they need it to go.'

0:11:500:11:53

Just honing their skills before the assessment next week.

0:11:530:11:56

They've done really well.

0:11:560:11:57

MUSIC: Jungle Boogie by Kool And The Gang

0:12:010:12:03

# Get down Get down

0:12:030:12:05

# Get down Get down... #

0:12:050:12:07

Outside a local watering hole, a rare group of animals is gathering.

0:12:070:12:11

It's Polly's big day - the start of the Insider Festival.

0:12:120:12:16

Here we go.

0:12:160:12:17

So, I've pieced an outfit together.

0:12:170:12:19

Erm, that's the main thing, really.

0:12:190:12:21

# Ah... #

0:12:210:12:23

We're taking people on buses around little stops in Strathspey

0:12:230:12:27

and then we're popping them on a steam train

0:12:270:12:28

which we've chartered just for our guests.

0:12:280:12:30

200 music lovers are paying between £50 and £450

0:12:300:12:34

for this eclectic Highland safari,

0:12:340:12:37

so Polly and Rae need it all to go smoothly.

0:12:370:12:40

# Jungle boogie... #

0:12:400:12:42

We've been working on it since about February,

0:12:420:12:45

so it's been a lot of work, but I'm glad that we're past

0:12:450:12:47

the spreadsheet stage and onto the fun bit.

0:12:470:12:50

And I keep forgetting I'm dressed like a lion.

0:12:510:12:54

# Jungle boogie... #

0:12:540:12:55

With previous Insider Festivals failing to make a profit,

0:12:550:12:59

Polly needs to make sure they sell plenty of beer tokens.

0:12:590:13:02

This is the starting point for the safari,

0:13:020:13:04

and, erm... Yeah, beer tokens.

0:13:040:13:07

-Hi, how are you? You look wonderful.

-I'm great. I'm Georgina's husband.

0:13:070:13:10

-I know.

-You know?

-I can't really miss you.

0:13:100:13:13

I knew you were coming as a meerkat.

0:13:130:13:15

Meerkats, lions, hunters and hunted -

0:13:150:13:18

they're up for the first leg of the safari.

0:13:180:13:21

HE MAKES A TRUMPET NOISE

0:13:210:13:24

All aboard!

0:13:240:13:26

I need a shifty up.

0:13:260:13:27

All aboard! Are you OK?

0:13:270:13:30

I think so.

0:13:300:13:32

# Whoa. #

0:13:320:13:35

On the mountain, the team are building new fence lines

0:13:450:13:48

for the winter ski runs, and for once, the weather is playing ball.

0:13:480:13:52

It's about the first good day we've had in...

0:13:520:13:56

ten years or something like that, I think.

0:13:560:13:59

The weather's been really brutal, aye.

0:13:590:14:02

This summer, it's just been...

0:14:020:14:04

It's one of the worst I can remember.

0:14:040:14:06

CHEERING Ruairi is back from his wedding,

0:14:060:14:08

and despite the honeymoon accommodation,

0:14:080:14:12

still happily married.

0:14:120:14:13

The wedding all went well.

0:14:130:14:16

The honeymoon was a blast. Had loads of diving. Oh, it's good.

0:14:160:14:19

It progresses nicely into the winter, really.

0:14:190:14:22

In the winter, Ruairi works as a ski patroller on the mountain,

0:14:220:14:25

but like most of his colleagues,

0:14:250:14:27

he needs to take on a number of jobs to survive year-round.

0:14:270:14:30

'I think, to make a living, you need to be pretty flexible,

0:14:320:14:36

'and you kind of need to work around the seasons.'

0:14:360:14:39

Seasonal work isn't as reliable, but it does mean you can

0:14:390:14:43

do for your work what you would like to do in your spare time,

0:14:430:14:46

which is be in the wild, and in the mountains

0:14:460:14:48

or in the glens.

0:14:480:14:50

I'm up here on Thursday.

0:14:500:14:53

I'm out counting the deer on the estate on the Friday with my dad,

0:14:530:14:57

and then the Saturday and Sunday,

0:14:570:15:00

I'm working with the medical side of things, with Ian.

0:15:000:15:03

This weekend, there's

0:15:130:15:14

a cross-country mountain bike championship in the valley.

0:15:140:15:17

150 riders are racing a tough 40km circuit through the forest.

0:15:170:15:22

Ruairi's providing medical cover,

0:15:220:15:24

along with fellow ski patroller Ian Cornfoot

0:15:240:15:27

and operations manager Colin Matthew.

0:15:270:15:29

We're doing the medical cover for

0:15:290:15:32

the cross-country event at Badaguish.

0:15:320:15:36

It's a team that knows each other's strengths and weaknesses.

0:15:360:15:39

'It's a good team.

0:15:390:15:41

'It's a lot of the same guys we have up the hill in the winter,

0:15:410:15:43

'so we, you know, all get on great.'

0:15:430:15:46

We're in the tent for the day,

0:15:460:15:48

so we will have walk-in casualties or,

0:15:480:15:51

if the guys pick anyone up on the course,

0:15:510:15:53

we'll deal with them in here.

0:15:530:15:56

Ian and Simon have taken up position at a tricky section of the course.

0:16:050:16:09

Should be able to get the line there, look.

0:16:110:16:13

She'll ride it properly. There you go.

0:16:130:16:16

Phew.

0:16:160:16:17

It's not long before they get a potential client...

0:16:180:16:21

BIKE CRASHES AND SHE GROANS

0:16:260:16:28

..but the paramedics can't intervene

0:16:300:16:32

until the rider withdraws from the race.

0:16:320:16:35

So, a quiet morning so far.

0:16:380:16:40

Well done. Good.

0:16:430:16:45

The Insider crowd are off on safari.

0:16:530:16:56

For Polly and Rae, this is the first big test of

0:16:560:16:59

whether it's all going to work.

0:16:590:17:01

Gordy has gone ahead to set up the first location

0:17:010:17:04

and soon hits a wee snag.

0:17:040:17:06

There's problems with the speaker.

0:17:060:17:09

Not working. I think we've been given a dodgy cable.

0:17:090:17:11

One, two, one, two, one, two. Yeah.

0:17:110:17:14

-I think we have a miracle.

-Yes! We have a gig.

0:17:140:17:16

Go again, before... And then I'll never touch it again.

0:17:160:17:18

One, two, one, two, one, two, one, two.

0:17:180:17:20

That's my song called One Two One Two.

0:17:200:17:22

-It's one of my favourites.

-LAUGHTER

0:17:220:17:24

Three Four is quite good but this is one...

0:17:240:17:26

It's definitely one of the better ones.

0:17:260:17:28

# One two one two One two one two... #

0:17:280:17:30

'We've done all the prep.

0:17:300:17:31

'We've done everything we can do, so..'

0:17:310:17:33

It's just fun. Hopefully.

0:17:330:17:35

Hopefully nothing goes wrong. Fingers crossed.

0:17:350:17:38

I've just jinxed it, haven't I?

0:17:380:17:39

Oops, so you have.

0:17:390:17:41

I shouldn't have touched it. It worked.

0:17:410:17:43

We should have left it at that.

0:17:430:17:45

Just stick your thingummy in the what's-it-called.

0:17:450:17:49

-Right?

-Sorry.

0:17:490:17:50

So, it's now a fully acoustic set.

0:17:500:17:53

# The night before we always die

0:17:530:17:56

# The morning light We survive

0:17:560:17:59

# Cos we've lived a lot And loved a lot... #

0:17:590:18:03

A rare moment of reflection for Polly.

0:18:030:18:06

# ..Cos you were my friend... #

0:18:080:18:10

Ross has been left back at home,

0:18:100:18:13

making sure the stage is set for the final location.

0:18:130:18:15

It's been a busy afternoon, you know? Just piecing bits together.

0:18:150:18:18

It's the first time, and it's different,

0:18:180:18:20

and hopefully they're having a wicked time.

0:18:200:18:22

Not to be outdone, Ross is following his own animal instincts.

0:18:220:18:26

I'm going as a rhino.

0:18:260:18:30

Erm, a Highland rhino...

0:18:300:18:33

or a rhinoce-ROSS.

0:18:330:18:34

At the lochside, the hunting is starting in earnest.

0:18:350:18:38

Right, stay.

0:18:380:18:40

Don't kill anyone, or I'll shoot you.

0:18:400:18:43

-You know what happened to your mother.

-LAUGHTER

0:18:430:18:46

Ruairi's day has suddenly got busier.

0:19:030:19:06

Yeah, Ian, we've got reports of a rider,

0:19:060:19:09

about 100 metres up the course, that's needing some attention.

0:19:090:19:14

Colin's en route.

0:19:140:19:16

Breathing difficulties?

0:19:160:19:18

-Just up here?

-First corner.

0:19:180:19:19

Yeah, I'm with the casualty.

0:19:210:19:23

He'd collapsed. He had breathing difficulties. Asthmatic.

0:19:230:19:26

He's got an active thyroid - overactive thyroid condition.

0:19:260:19:29

Nah, we'll get a Jeep up and he can sit in.

0:19:290:19:31

At the medical tent,

0:19:310:19:32

Ruairi's dealing with the rider who had the earlier crash.

0:19:320:19:34

OK, do you want to pop that ice pack on and then I'll just...

0:19:340:19:38

Just get you a plaster for the wee graze there.

0:19:380:19:40

It's not too... Not too bad.

0:19:400:19:42

I was pushing too hard,

0:19:420:19:43

so I wasn't in full control of my bike.

0:19:430:19:46

I was more about going fast,

0:19:460:19:47

and then I just went over my handlebars onto the ground.

0:19:470:19:51

Well, I was just a bit shaken up, so then I kept crashing

0:19:510:19:53

after that as well - just little crashes.

0:19:530:19:56

Colin's out on the track at the moment, with this gentleman,

0:19:560:19:59

so we're going to go out and pick him up,

0:19:590:20:00

and then we're going to bring him back to the medical tent,

0:20:000:20:03

where we can better assess what's happening with him.

0:20:030:20:07

Erm...

0:20:070:20:09

I just collapsed.

0:20:090:20:11

Breathing difficulty, cos I had... I've got asthma. Hyperthyroid.

0:20:110:20:15

-A bit wobbly on your legs.

-A wee bit.

0:20:150:20:17

Well, we'll you get you sitting in the back here,

0:20:170:20:20

and then just rest your bum against it.

0:20:200:20:22

We'll spin you round, and then when you feel OK, we'll get your legs up.

0:20:220:20:26

Slide right back, if you like, to be more comfortable.

0:20:310:20:35

So, you've got plenty oxygen there.

0:20:350:20:37

-Second place, I was sitting.

-Aw...

0:20:370:20:39

However, that's life.

0:20:410:20:43

The day has brought a bit more action than Colin was anticipating.

0:20:430:20:47

Don't you ever, ever say, "It's quiet."

0:20:470:20:50

Aye, we could do with some action again.

0:20:500:20:53

You were on top of it, Colin.

0:20:530:20:54

I didn't mean that kind of action,

0:20:540:20:56

I meant, like, some croissants or something.

0:20:560:20:58

For the intrepid explorers, it's off to the next location.

0:21:000:21:03

How can we not be having fun?

0:21:030:21:05

We're on safari.

0:21:050:21:07

-And it's not raining.

-Yay!

0:21:100:21:13

# I woke up next to my favourite lover

0:21:130:21:17

# And her hair was... #

0:21:190:21:21

-Beers or ciders?

-What about the gin?

0:21:210:21:23

All about the gin.

0:21:230:21:25

Having some sausage malfunctions.

0:21:260:21:29

# Told her that I would soon be leaving

0:21:290:21:33

# To wander on down that long last journey... #

0:21:330:21:37

I love all this animal print. Everyone looks wonderful.

0:21:370:21:40

I just went out to shoot some breakfast and got on a bus.

0:21:400:21:42

# Out of her upstairs window... #

0:21:420:21:46

The beer tokens are coming in fast.

0:21:460:21:49

The bar's busy, and the sausages are going down well.

0:21:490:21:52

They're just too good. Demand is outstripping supply.

0:21:520:21:56

The Insider balance sheet is looking up.

0:21:560:21:58

CHEERING

0:22:070:22:09

SHEEP BLEAT

0:22:130:22:15

-Right, we're good? You got your kit?

-Yeah.

-Good to go?

0:22:150:22:18

At last, Mike has managed to break away from the office to spend

0:22:180:22:22

a bit of quality time with his son.

0:22:220:22:24

-Are we good, Harris?

-Yeah.

-Come on, then, mate, let's go.

0:22:240:22:27

-How do you clap like that?

-Eh?

-I can only clap like that.

0:22:290:22:32

Mike is keen to pass on his climbing skills to Harris.

0:22:340:22:38

He's only 11, and he's a teen ninja climber, you know? It's great.

0:22:380:22:41

Except, I'm getting old and past it,

0:22:410:22:43

so he could take over the reins.

0:22:430:22:45

Oh, we might just go straight onto the hard VS, Harris,

0:22:490:22:51

if these guys are up here.

0:22:510:22:53

My parents used to take me up to the...

0:22:530:22:55

We used to have a caravan in the Lake District.

0:22:550:22:57

You know, dragging me out and making the effort to

0:22:570:23:00

get me out in the outdoors.

0:23:000:23:01

That's a great gift you can give your kids, so...

0:23:010:23:03

You know, he wouldn't know that at the moment,

0:23:030:23:05

but you know, when he's...

0:23:050:23:06

In another 10-15 years' time, he might be going,

0:23:060:23:08

"Oh, yeah, that's why we do it."

0:23:080:23:10

So, yeah, maybe. So why not?

0:23:100:23:12

-Shall we get a rope on there, mate?

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:23:140:23:16

MUSIC: Hey Brother by Avicii

0:23:160:23:18

A little lesson in knots for Harris.

0:23:180:23:21

-Erm...

-Just try it, and see what happens.

0:23:210:23:24

That's probably not...

0:23:240:23:26

Unless it is.

0:23:260:23:27

Start with a figure of a nine,

0:23:270:23:28

so you'd put an extra twist in that, mate.

0:23:280:23:32

That's it. Get a bit more length.

0:23:320:23:35

-OK, are you good?

-Yeah.

0:23:350:23:37

# Hey, brother

0:23:370:23:40

# Do you still believe in one another?

0:23:400:23:45

# Hey, sister,

0:23:450:23:49

# Do you still believe in love...? #

0:23:490:23:51

Is this meant to be hard?

0:23:510:23:53

At the moment, he's learning so much from climbing.

0:23:530:23:55

He says he wants to take on my business.

0:23:550:23:57

He's learning how to climb. He's learning how to canyon.

0:23:570:24:00

He's learning how to kayak.

0:24:000:24:01

He's got the skills there already, so I think it's really important.

0:24:010:24:05

'The first thing I probably ever climbed was my pouch,

0:24:050:24:08

'and then it would have gone to the bed,

0:24:080:24:10

'and then it would have been the shed.'

0:24:100:24:12

I climbed a shed at 18 months,

0:24:120:24:14

but then my dad had to climb up and get me.

0:24:140:24:17

'We do things the same.

0:24:170:24:19

'He likes climbing and I like climbing.

0:24:190:24:21

'As a parent, you're just petrified watching him.' Well done, mate.

0:24:210:24:24

That's the worry of being a parent.

0:24:240:24:26

You just don't know what your kids are going to get up to,

0:24:260:24:28

so at least I can keep an eye on him here, and maybe make him safe.

0:24:280:24:31

Just go right up to the top, over the edge.

0:24:310:24:33

Good, mate. Well done.

0:24:330:24:35

That's a good lad.

0:24:380:24:39

Have a sit down, and then you can untie yourself, all right?

0:24:390:24:42

Grr. Half of them in your belly.

0:24:420:24:45

That's... There's three sweets left,

0:24:450:24:47

and you've left the milk ones, which are...

0:24:470:24:49

It's time like this that reminds Mike why it's worth putting

0:24:490:24:52

the effort into the business.

0:24:520:24:54

-Right, are you good, mate?

-Yeah.

0:24:540:24:56

-Did we get the water?

-Yeah.

0:24:560:24:58

TRAIN RUMBLES AND WHISTLES

0:25:000:25:03

The jungle has come to the Strathspey Railway,

0:25:040:25:07

as the Insider Festival arrives at its next venue.

0:25:070:25:11

It's kind of hard, when you're in the middle of these things,

0:25:110:25:14

because everyone... You're running around doing work

0:25:140:25:16

and it's quite hard to judge what it's like as a punter,

0:25:160:25:19

but everyone seems... everyone seems happy.

0:25:190:25:22

Perhaps not everyone.

0:25:220:25:24

I'd say something else is coming off these coaches today,

0:25:270:25:31

I'll tell you that.

0:25:310:25:32

CHEERING AND YELLING

0:25:320:25:35

Yeah, I'm just glad I'm at this end of the train, I think.

0:25:370:25:40

You're no fun.

0:25:420:25:43

It's different, I think, is how you describe it, isn't it?

0:25:430:25:46

I mean, I've heard of hipsters but...

0:25:460:25:48

If I could actually maybe be on the train,

0:25:480:25:50

and enjoying it with them, then I think I might be a bit different.

0:25:500:25:53

I'm stuck here still drinking tea, so...

0:25:530:25:56

LOUD CARNIVAL MUSIC PLAYS

0:25:560:25:58

At last, Polly can begin to relax.

0:25:580:26:00

CHEERING

0:26:180:26:22

TRAIN WHISTLES

0:26:220:26:25

Might as well join in the rocking.

0:26:250:26:28

TRAIN RUMBLES

0:26:320:26:39

# Lines have been broken

0:26:400:26:44

# Oh... #

0:26:480:26:50

It's back home for the final stop on the wildlife safari.

0:26:500:26:54

# I watch from silent flames

0:26:550:26:58

# The colours turn And you

0:26:580:27:01

# You are sad like a fire... #

0:27:010:27:04

Polly can finally catch up with her rhinoce-Ross...

0:27:060:27:09

-Where's my husband?

-..if she can find him.

0:27:090:27:12

# Another metre on the kite

0:27:120:27:14

# Flying higher and higher... #

0:27:140:27:18

So how do you cuddle a rhinoceros?

0:27:180:27:20

-Hi.

-Hi.

-Where do I have to stand?

0:27:200:27:22

I don't know. I haven't figured that out yet.

0:27:220:27:24

-Here's the best.

-Hi.

0:27:240:27:26

How's it going?

0:27:260:27:28

TRAIN WHISTLES A whistle-stop tour,

0:27:280:27:31

five locations,

0:27:310:27:33

200 customers, a single rhinoce-Ross,

0:27:330:27:36

1,500 pints of ale and cider,

0:27:360:27:38

and 200 sausages sold.

0:27:380:27:41

You're hoping to achieve this vibe, with everybody bouncing

0:27:420:27:45

and enjoying it. You look around and you think,

0:27:450:27:47

"Yeah, we did it."

0:27:470:27:50

For the first time in its seven years,

0:27:500:27:52

the festival has made a profit.

0:27:520:27:54

# Ooh. #

0:27:540:27:57

CHEERING AND WHISTLING

0:27:570:28:00

Next time on The Mountain...

0:28:040:28:06

-All right?

-No.

-What's up with you?

0:28:060:28:08

Johnny's having some problems at Loch Insh.

0:28:080:28:10

-My two numpties never opened up two chalets yesterday...

-Oh, no.

0:28:100:28:13

..because I didn't have it on the list.

0:28:130:28:16

Adam sets a linguistic challenge...

0:28:160:28:18

Richt ticht, they need a good clart o' grease.

0:28:180:28:22

..and summer ends with a splash.
