Reindeer.

0:00:030:00:05

A majestic symbol of winter.

0:00:050:00:08

These animals have been key to people exploring the frozen north...

0:00:120:00:15

..so I want them to help me on a very special journey of my own.

0:00:160:00:22

My name is Gordon Buchanan.

0:00:250:00:28

Over the years,

0:00:280:00:30

I've filmed in some of the wildest places on the planet.

0:00:300:00:35

Don't even think about it.

0:00:350:00:36

Now I'm heading to Lapland, inside the Arctic Circle,

0:00:380:00:43

to learn from the Sami -

0:00:430:00:46

who are known as the Reindeer People.

0:00:460:00:49

With their help, I'm going to try to earn the trust of my own reindeer.

0:00:530:00:58

Why have you got that suspicious look on your face?

0:00:580:01:01

And attempt to travel across this harsh wilderness...

0:01:010:01:04

Whoa-ho!

0:01:040:01:07

..to film the phenomenon the Sami most revere -

0:01:070:01:12

the northern lights...

0:01:120:01:14

Come on.

0:01:170:01:18

..but building a bond with a reindeer isn't easy.

0:01:180:01:22

Slightly stubborn at times.

0:01:220:01:25

Out here, we need each other to survive.

0:01:250:01:28

There's something moving over in the trees.

0:01:310:01:34

What is that, boy?

0:01:340:01:37

And as winter hits, our ultimate goal might be out of reach.

0:01:370:01:42

This is tantalisingly close to seeing what I've come here to see.

0:01:420:01:48

I'm in Lapland, in Finland's far north,

0:02:060:02:09

well within the Arctic Circle.

0:02:090:02:12

It might look like a winter wonderland,

0:02:150:02:17

but it is without a doubt one of the harshest places on earth to live.

0:02:170:02:21

I've come to this wilderness to try and film a natural phenomenon

0:02:220:02:27

that has always eluded me.

0:02:270:02:28

I've wanted to film the northern lights for over 25 years.

0:02:300:02:35

So now I've come to one of the best places in the world

0:02:350:02:39

to, hopefully, see nature's greatest light show.

0:02:390:02:44

Also known as the aurora borealis,

0:02:480:02:52

this magnificent light display

0:02:520:02:55

is caused by charged particles from the sun

0:02:550:02:59

colliding with our atmosphere.

0:02:590:03:01

The lights remain mysterious and unpredictable -

0:03:030:03:07

but what is known is that the particles are attracted

0:03:070:03:11

to the magnetic North Pole.

0:03:110:03:13

So I've travelled over 2,000 miles.

0:03:160:03:19

This far north, the lights are reported

0:03:190:03:21

to illuminate the sky regularly.

0:03:210:03:24

To maximise my chances of filming them,

0:03:280:03:31

I'm going to meet the people who have a special connection

0:03:310:03:34

with the aurora...

0:03:340:03:35

..and who know this region better than anyone else.

0:03:370:03:41

For thousands of years,

0:03:450:03:47

this unforgiving place has been home to a remarkable group of people.

0:03:470:03:52

They are the Sami.

0:03:520:03:53

Traditionally nomadic, the Sami have an unrivalled knowledge

0:03:560:04:00

of how to survive in this world of snow and ice...

0:04:000:04:03

..made possible thanks to their relationship

0:04:040:04:07

with one incredible animal.

0:04:070:04:09

The reindeer.

0:04:130:04:14

The Sami people and reindeer are inextricably linked.

0:04:160:04:20

They rely on them for everything - an entire way of life.

0:04:200:04:24

Food, clothing, shelter, transportation.

0:04:240:04:27

It is very true to say that if there were no reindeer,

0:04:270:04:31

the Sami would not have been able to survive in this part of the world.

0:04:310:04:34

Reindeer are still one of the best ways to access

0:04:390:04:42

the remotest parts of the tundra...

0:04:420:04:44

..so I want to drive a reindeer sleigh into the wilderness,

0:04:470:04:51

where the night sky is at its darkest,

0:04:510:04:54

and I'll have the best chance of filming the northern lights.

0:04:540:04:58

Oh, look at this!

0:05:000:05:02

Off the road! Off the road!

0:05:020:05:04

Coming through. Coming through.

0:05:040:05:05

There you go. That's an omen.

0:05:070:05:09

It shouldn't be surprising that the only other living thing

0:05:090:05:12

that I've seen on this entire drive so far

0:05:120:05:14

has been a herd of reindeer.

0:05:140:05:16

Off you go!

0:05:170:05:18

A Sami family has agreed to teach me everything they know

0:05:260:05:29

about the northern lights,

0:05:290:05:31

reindeer and surviving in the Arctic wilderness.

0:05:310:05:35

-Hello, hello.

-Oh, hello, hello.

0:05:350:05:38

You are the man I've come this far north to meet.

0:05:380:05:41

I'm Gordon. Lovely to meet you. Nice to meet you, Petri.

0:05:420:05:46

I read it's rude to ask someone how many reindeer they have -

0:05:460:05:49

is that correct?

0:05:490:05:50

I have no money in the bank at the moment!

0:05:530:05:56

I can see there is, sort of, 40, at least here.

0:05:560:05:58

-Yes, I have...

-I don't want to know.

0:05:580:06:01

If it's rude, I don't want to know.

0:06:010:06:02

I can count them.

0:06:020:06:03

Petri Mattus started looking after reindeer

0:06:060:06:09

when he was just two years old.

0:06:090:06:11

He comes from a long line of Sami reindeer herders,

0:06:140:06:17

and still follows the traditional ways.

0:06:170:06:21

So, your shoes, is that reindeer fur?

0:06:210:06:24

Yes.

0:06:240:06:26

Really?

0:06:260:06:28

Whoa! Really? So when it's down as low as -50,

0:06:370:06:41

you don't see reindeer shaking and shivering?

0:06:410:06:43

Reindeer evolved during the ice age.

0:06:510:06:54

There are reports of them living in temperatures as low as -70.

0:06:540:06:58

Petri leaves me in charge of feeding time,

0:07:030:07:07

so I can take a closer look at these incredible animals.

0:07:070:07:11

Hey, you. Over here!

0:07:110:07:14

There we go.

0:07:140:07:15

It is amazing to be eyeball to eyeball,

0:07:160:07:19

nose to nose, with a reindeer.

0:07:190:07:22

The first thing I'm struck by is their winter coat.

0:07:240:07:28

It's up to three inches thick.

0:07:280:07:30

Fur covers almost every part of their body.

0:07:310:07:34

It's almost impossible to sink my hand into this dense fur.

0:07:360:07:40

It is unbelievably thick.

0:07:400:07:42

You can't part the hairs and see the skin beneath.

0:07:420:07:47

Not only is the hair super thick,

0:07:470:07:49

but each one of these hair fibres is hollow.

0:07:490:07:52

So the animal is insulated and each individual hair is insulated

0:07:540:07:58

with that air void in the middle.

0:07:580:08:00

Everything about them, from their feet, to the tops of their antlers,

0:08:000:08:05

and the tip of their nose, to the end of their tail,

0:08:050:08:07

they've adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

0:08:070:08:13

I'm here as the Arctic braces itself for the toughest time of year.

0:08:190:08:24

Winter is coming.

0:08:260:08:27

Daylight hours are retreating by ten minutes every day...

0:08:290:08:33

..and soon, the sun won't rise for two months.

0:08:360:08:39

On my journey to film the lights,

0:08:420:08:44

I may face temperatures as low as -30.

0:08:440:08:48

So Petri wants to teach me how the Sami camp

0:08:520:08:54

in these extreme conditions.

0:08:540:08:56

I've got it.

0:09:020:09:04

Pretty tall.

0:09:040:09:07

So how many people could sleep in a lavvu this size?

0:09:070:09:10

This tepee style tent is called a lavvu.

0:09:130:09:18

For over a thousand years,

0:09:180:09:20

this simple shelter has helped the Sami survive in the Arctic.

0:09:200:09:25

When it was first - when it was just two sticks,

0:09:250:09:27

it was a bit wobbly, quite wobbly,

0:09:270:09:29

and then a third one, it was a little bit wobbly -

0:09:290:09:31

but with every additional stick, you see,

0:09:310:09:34

you get this really stable structure.

0:09:340:09:36

There's more to add.

0:09:360:09:37

The Sami leave lavvu poles at waypoints across the tundra.

0:09:390:09:45

This is great.

0:09:450:09:46

So all I'll need to carry with me on my journey is a canvas covering.

0:09:460:09:50

It's amazing how quickly the whole lavvu heats up.

0:09:520:09:55

My trousers are getting nice and dry here.

0:09:550:09:58

They're steaming.

0:09:580:10:00

It might be approaching -20 outside,

0:10:000:10:03

but thanks to the fire, I'm feeling very cosy...

0:10:030:10:06

..but as I'm getting comfortable,

0:10:090:10:11

Petri introduces me to a slightly unsettling Sami snack.

0:10:110:10:16

-Blood pancakes?

-Yeah.

0:10:220:10:23

-This is reindeer blood?

-Yeah.

0:10:230:10:26

-Is your blood in the flask?

-Yes.

-A flask of blood.

0:10:260:10:29

I'm glad that I didn't pick this up

0:10:310:10:33

and think, "Oh, a nice mug of coffee,"

0:10:330:10:35

and it's reindeer blood!

0:10:350:10:37

It might seem odd to us,

0:10:380:10:40

but over thousands of years,

0:10:400:10:42

the Sami have learned to use every part of a reindeer.

0:10:420:10:45

They value and respect these animals so much, nothing is wasted.

0:10:470:10:51

-Here you are.

-Thank you.

0:10:550:10:57

Whoa!

0:10:580:11:00

Mmm!

0:11:020:11:03

I think I was expecting the flavour to be much, much stronger.

0:11:040:11:08

-Mmm.

-But it's very mild.

0:11:080:11:11

-Kind of... Good winter food.

-Yeah.

-I like it a lot.

0:11:110:11:14

The only thing that's putting me off

0:11:180:11:20

is reindeer walking about outside

0:11:200:11:22

as I'm eating a reindeer blood pancake.

0:11:220:11:24

For the Sami, reindeer are a vital source of nutrients

0:11:460:11:49

over the harsh winter months.

0:11:490:11:51

That evening, Petri and his family

0:11:570:12:00

invite me to a traditional welcome dinner.

0:12:000:12:03

I have a strong suspicion about what will be on the menu.

0:12:030:12:06

Thank you so much. It's so nice to be here, thank you.

0:12:090:12:12

Petri's wife, Kirsi,

0:12:130:12:16

and his two sons Pietu and Penjami are dressed in the Sami outfits

0:12:160:12:21

that their family have worn for generations...

0:12:210:12:24

..and, yes, we're eating reindeer.

0:12:260:12:28

This time, it's salted, and served with potatoes.

0:12:300:12:34

A traditional festive meal.

0:12:340:12:36

This is very nice.

0:12:360:12:38

Please.

0:12:400:12:41

Do you think either of the boys will be reindeer herders

0:12:440:12:47

when they grow up?

0:12:470:12:48

Ehka.

0:12:480:12:49

OK.

0:12:520:12:53

That's good.

0:12:530:12:54

I suppose that's part of living in a beautiful part of the world.

0:13:070:13:10

Why would you live in somewhere that is quite so difficult

0:13:100:13:13

if you didn't love it?

0:13:130:13:15

This is arguably one of the best places in the world

0:13:240:13:27

to see northern lights.

0:13:270:13:29

So, the boys have grown up with that just a part of their life.

0:13:290:13:32

Did you ever, was there ever a point where you explained what they were?

0:13:320:13:37

Or did you kind of tell them the folklore of the northern lights?

0:13:370:13:41

It's great to learn more about Sami culture -

0:14:000:14:03

a way of life that is over 4,000 years old...

0:14:030:14:07

..and as a thank-you,

0:14:090:14:10

I brought a slice of Scottish culture to share with the family.

0:14:100:14:14

I have this - it's called a clootie dumpling.

0:14:140:14:17

It's like a fruit loaf. This is the sweet version of haggis.

0:14:170:14:21

If you don't like it, I won't be offended.

0:14:220:14:25

-Enjoy.

-Thank you.

0:14:250:14:27

It's definitely better hot.

0:14:350:14:36

Sunrise this morning is at 9:30.

0:14:510:14:54

On my journey to try and film the northern lights,

0:14:570:14:59

I'll have just a few hours of daylight.

0:14:590:15:02

To help maximise travelling time, I need a reindeer to pull me and my

0:15:050:15:11

equipment on a sleigh.

0:15:110:15:13

Not every reindeer can pull a sleigh.

0:15:150:15:18

It can take up to two years of training.

0:15:190:15:21

Here I come. Here I come.

0:15:210:15:24

Hello, boys.

0:15:240:15:26

Hello, boys. You remember me?

0:15:260:15:29

Hello.

0:15:290:15:30

Petri has two sleigh-pulling reindeer,

0:15:300:15:34

and the morning feed is the perfect time to get to know them.

0:15:340:15:38

Right. Let's try some following.

0:15:380:15:40

Come on, then.

0:15:400:15:41

I have the very difficult job of choosing between these two reindeer.

0:15:410:15:46

I need a reindeer to pull my sleigh.

0:15:460:15:49

That age-old problem!

0:15:490:15:51

I know how Santa feels.

0:15:510:15:52

But he was lucky, because he's got eight -

0:15:520:15:55

nine, if you include Rudolph.

0:15:550:15:57

Either way, however this decision goes,

0:15:570:16:00

one reindeer is going to be disappointed.

0:16:000:16:03

The first trial is,

0:16:030:16:06

can your reindeer walk at heel?

0:16:060:16:09

OK. Walk on.

0:16:090:16:10

Trot!

0:16:110:16:12

# I don't know what I've been told

0:16:120:16:16

# A reindeer's tootsies are mighty cold. #

0:16:160:16:18

Come on! Trot, trot!

0:16:180:16:20

Trot on. Trot on.

0:16:210:16:24

Reindeer have been domesticated for around 3,000 years.

0:16:260:16:30

They still have very distinct personalities...

0:16:310:16:34

..and I soon discover the differences between these two.

0:16:360:16:40

This one is definitely friendlier...

0:16:400:16:42

..and, er, yeah, it seems more interested in me than this one.

0:16:430:16:47

For me, this friendlier reindeer feels like the ideal companion -

0:16:490:16:54

but ultimately, Petri will decide which one is best.

0:16:540:16:58

All reindeer here eat the cladonia group of lichen -

0:17:000:17:05

a nutritious mix of algae and fungi.

0:17:050:17:08

It grows all over these northern forests...

0:17:130:17:15

..so finding food, at least for the reindeer, won't be an issue...

0:17:180:17:21

..but I'll have to take rations with me,

0:17:250:17:28

and Petri has offered to help me gather some food,

0:17:280:17:30

using a traditional Sami method.

0:17:300:17:33

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this is done,

0:17:370:17:41

cos I've seen ice fishing with a hook and line, but not with a net.

0:17:410:17:45

-Yeah.

-This is new. This is uncharted territory for me.

0:17:450:17:48

Net fishing on frozen lakes has been perfected by the Sami

0:17:520:17:56

over hundreds of years.

0:17:560:17:57

-So, we have to get the net from this hole..

-Over there.

-..to over there.

0:18:010:18:05

And I have not a clue...

0:18:050:18:06

..how that will be done without a submarine.

0:18:080:18:11

I don't have to swim, do I?

0:18:110:18:12

A towel and some speedos!

0:18:160:18:17

Petri may not have a submarine,

0:18:280:18:31

but he has the next best thing.

0:18:310:18:33

A uittolauta, made of wood and metal.

0:18:340:18:37

It will travel under the ice with a rope attached.

0:18:410:18:45

Ah!

0:18:450:18:47

This is the eureka moment!

0:18:470:18:49

That is very clever.

0:18:500:18:52

With each pull on the rope,

0:18:530:18:55

the spike on the uittolauta digs into the ice.

0:18:550:18:58

When released, it shoots forward.

0:19:000:19:02

No.

0:19:040:19:06

I've lost it.

0:19:060:19:07

As I'm discovering, keeping track of it isn't straightforward.

0:19:070:19:11

If there was no snow on top of the ice, it would be easy,

0:19:110:19:13

because you could just look through the ice

0:19:130:19:15

for a big yellow piece of wood -

0:19:150:19:18

but I'm having to listen out.

0:19:180:19:19

Go again.

0:19:210:19:22

Go.

0:19:260:19:27

I feel like a madman.

0:19:330:19:35

OK, here it is, got it.

0:19:350:19:37

It's right here. It's just moving about.

0:19:370:19:40

HE LAUGHS

0:19:400:19:42

Moving about, maybe kind of half a metre at a time.

0:19:420:19:45

It's very, very clever.

0:19:450:19:47

Once the uittolauta gets from one hole to the other,

0:19:490:19:52

we attach a 160-foot-long net to the rope, and pull it across.

0:19:520:19:56

The best part of fishing with a net, as opposed to a rod,

0:20:010:20:04

is that once it is deployed,

0:20:040:20:05

we can just go back to somewhere a little bit warmer and less exposed,

0:20:050:20:08

and leave this out for hours and hours, leave it overnight.

0:20:080:20:11

We'll check the net in two days' time, before I leave on my journey.

0:20:140:20:18

Today, sunset is around quarter past two in the afternoon.

0:20:220:20:26

It's the ideal time to try out a specialist camera

0:20:280:20:31

I've brought to film the northern lights...

0:20:310:20:34

..and I've got the perfect subject to test it on.

0:20:360:20:39

Hey, boys.

0:20:420:20:43

Watch, I'm coming through.

0:20:430:20:45

I've got my own version of antlers right here

0:20:470:20:49

Come on.

0:20:490:20:51

This is one of the most light-sensitive cameras

0:20:520:20:55

in the world.

0:20:550:20:56

I have to say that these images look beautiful in this light.

0:20:570:21:02

A short time ago, if you wanted to film in these light levels,

0:21:040:21:06

you'd have to film in infrared,

0:21:060:21:09

and then everything is seen in black and white,

0:21:090:21:11

but this camera picks up colour, and that's what I really want.

0:21:110:21:14

It's not just to see the northern lights

0:21:140:21:16

and the shapes they make in the sky,

0:21:160:21:18

and to see that there are lights in the sky,

0:21:180:21:20

but to actually see the richness of colour.

0:21:200:21:22

Hopefully, you can see colours that I can't even see with my own eyes -

0:21:220:21:26

and filming the reindeer

0:21:260:21:28

is a good way to actually just get a sense, at this time of night,

0:21:280:21:32

of what this camera can do.

0:21:320:21:34

And my favourite, friendlier reindeer, isn't camera shy.

0:21:350:21:39

Get your antlers out of my lens!

0:21:410:21:43

This is really exciting.

0:21:480:21:49

I'm really looking forward to the next stage of this adventure,

0:21:490:21:53

heading off into the wilds with my reindeer.

0:21:530:21:56

I've got one more day left with Petri

0:22:150:22:18

and today he wants to show me how to drive a reindeer sleigh.

0:22:180:22:21

I know which reindeer I'd like to use,

0:22:230:22:26

but I need to see what Petri thinks.

0:22:260:22:29

Hello, boys.

0:22:290:22:30

See, I quite like...I quite like this one. He seems friendlier.

0:22:310:22:37

This is a good one for pulling my sleigh?

0:22:370:22:40

It's a better one? Why's that?

0:22:420:22:43

Really? Because I was going for which one I liked the most!

0:22:470:22:51

HE LAUGHS The friendliest one.

0:22:510:22:53

It does make sense to take the bigger, stronger reindeer -

0:22:540:22:58

but he just puts me a bit on edge.

0:22:580:23:01

There's one thing I don't quite like about the reindeer -

0:23:020:23:06

I should speak a bit more quietly,

0:23:060:23:08

because I don't want him to hear me -

0:23:080:23:10

is that it's got quite an aggressive-looking...

0:23:100:23:13

..part of its antler, that comes straight out

0:23:130:23:15

and every time I'm close to it,

0:23:150:23:17

I think it's going to gouge my eye out -

0:23:170:23:19

but I suppose it's about selecting the best reindeer for the job.

0:23:190:23:23

The job is to pull a sleigh.

0:23:230:23:26

To get to grips with sleigh riding,

0:23:320:23:34

Petri wants me to follow him on a five-mile circuit of a frozen lake.

0:23:340:23:38

I'm positive I'm ready.

0:23:430:23:44

In which direction?

0:23:470:23:48

OK. 70km. Do you know where the hospital is?

0:23:490:23:53

Hopefully, we won't need that.

0:23:530:23:54

Ready?

0:23:590:24:00

Let's go. Come on. Come on. Come on.

0:24:020:24:06

Come on.

0:24:060:24:08

While he may be the strongest reindeer,

0:24:100:24:12

it seems he's also the most stubborn.

0:24:120:24:15

Come on.

0:24:180:24:19

Shoo, shoo!

0:24:190:24:20

I really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

0:24:220:24:24

Shoo! Shoo, shoo!

0:24:280:24:32

Shoo, shoo!

0:24:320:24:34

Shoo, shoo, shoo!

0:24:360:24:39

Once my reindeer does get going, I can enjoy the ride.

0:24:420:24:47

Come on.

0:24:480:24:49

There's something, very, very nice about being pulled along

0:24:510:24:55

through the snow by a reindeer.

0:24:550:24:57

You can see why Santa's done this all these years.

0:24:570:25:00

It's not something you grow tired of.

0:25:020:25:05

Shoo!

0:25:050:25:06

Reindeer make driving a sleigh easy.

0:25:080:25:12

A gentle tap with a rope is all that's needed to keep them going.

0:25:130:25:17

Their splayed hooves act like snowshoes...

0:25:190:25:22

Come on, boy.

0:25:220:25:23

..so they can pull hundreds of kilos in weight -

0:25:230:25:28

and if the conditions are right, they can cover 30 miles in a day.

0:25:280:25:32

It's quite...I suppose it's moving at a pace that I could walk out,

0:25:350:25:39

but the one thing it does do,

0:25:390:25:40

it gives me the opportunity to look around and enjoy...

0:25:400:25:45

..the world about me -

0:25:450:25:46

and it's beautiful. It is a winter wonderland.

0:25:460:25:49

Come on, boy. Ho!

0:26:060:26:09

You don't need a licence to drive a sleigh in Lapland

0:26:090:26:13

and after a day's practice,

0:26:130:26:15

I feel in good shape for my journey...

0:26:150:26:18

Fabulous. That's great.

0:26:180:26:21

It's quite something.

0:26:210:26:23

It's the way to travel round about here.

0:26:230:26:25

I could load up this sleigh, and just keep going,

0:26:250:26:28

heading off into the wilderness.

0:26:280:26:31

Keep going until we see the northern lights.

0:26:310:26:34

That's the plan.

0:26:340:26:35

..but I've got to admit, I'm still wary of this reindeer.

0:26:360:26:41

I'm just not sure he likes me.

0:26:410:26:43

That evening, my ambitions to film the northern lights

0:26:530:26:56

are dampened further by the Arctic weather.

0:26:560:26:59

No. This is not happening.

0:27:040:27:05

There's no chance of seeing the northern lights

0:27:050:27:08

while it's like this.

0:27:080:27:09

There's complete cloud cover. It's just grey -

0:27:090:27:13

and what makes it doubly frustrating

0:27:130:27:16

is that on this very clever aurora app that I have,

0:27:160:27:20

it shows you that there are spectacular northern lights

0:27:200:27:24

taking place right here, right now, in this location,

0:27:240:27:28

but they are happening, kind of,

0:27:280:27:30

up there, above the layer of cloud.

0:27:300:27:34

What it does also show me

0:27:340:27:35

is the best northern lights on the entire planet, right now,

0:27:350:27:39

are in Claremont, in Canada!

0:27:390:27:41

That's just 3,425 miles from this exact spot.

0:27:410:27:47

So if my reindeer could fly

0:27:470:27:49

with kind of Santa-like speeds across the world,

0:27:490:27:52

which would probably take us,

0:27:520:27:54

I would say, a couple of minutes, we could go off,

0:27:540:27:57

film the northern lights, and then be back in time for dinner.

0:27:570:28:00

It's the morning of my departure.

0:28:100:28:13

Petri and I are up early to check the fishing net.

0:28:130:28:16

It's been a couple of days,

0:28:180:28:20

so hopefully we've caught something for my journey...

0:28:200:28:23

Come on!

0:28:310:28:33

I say six, you say five.

0:28:330:28:35

-Oh, here we go, one white fish.

-Yeah.

0:28:350:28:38

-Whoa! Trout. Ah, wow! That's a nice fish.

-Yeah. One trout.

0:28:390:28:44

..but after the initial haul,

0:28:460:28:49

the net comes up empty...

0:28:490:28:51

..and I'm reminded how harsh this winter wonderland can be.

0:28:530:28:57

There is, kind of, one view of looking at this scene,

0:28:570:29:00

and it's all snowy and white.

0:29:000:29:02

It's very different just standing here.

0:29:020:29:05

It's freezing cold, my feet are cold, my hands are cold,

0:29:050:29:09

the wind is cutting through the clothing that I have on

0:29:090:29:12

and this is just the start of my journey.

0:29:120:29:16

It's a very daunting, the fact that things, undoubtedly,

0:29:160:29:18

are going to get a lot harder, a lot tougher, in the days to come.

0:29:180:29:23

I'm just worried that I'm not prepared for that.

0:29:230:29:25

I'm worried that I'm not quite tough enough for this place.

0:29:250:29:29

But I won't have to face this wilderness alone.

0:29:400:29:44

If I can make friends with him,

0:29:440:29:47

perhaps this reindeer WILL be a good Arctic companion.

0:29:470:29:51

Good lad.

0:29:510:29:52

Don't run away. Don't run away.

0:29:520:29:56

He may not be my first choice,

0:29:560:29:58

but I trust Petri's call that he's the best reindeer for the job.

0:29:580:30:03

Come on, you.

0:30:040:30:05

You know me. You know me.

0:30:060:30:09

Why have you got that suspicious look on your face?

0:30:110:30:14

Traditionally, the Sami don't name their reindeer,

0:30:140:30:17

but I'm beginning to think I should call this one Grumpy.

0:30:170:30:22

Things are starting off on a bad foot.

0:30:220:30:25

He knows that I'm up to something.

0:30:250:30:27

He knows I'm trying to catch him.

0:30:270:30:28

An important part of this is to bond with my reindeer -

0:30:320:30:37

which I want to do, but he has absolutely no desire whatsoever

0:30:370:30:42

to be anywhere near me.

0:30:420:30:44

Hey!

0:30:460:30:48

Right, I think I'm going to have to resort to bribery.

0:30:480:30:52

In my pocket, I have some lichen.

0:30:530:30:56

You know lichen. You love lichen.

0:30:580:31:01

Look. Oh, yes.

0:31:010:31:04

I've got you now. Look at it.

0:31:040:31:06

You cannot, you cannot resist it.

0:31:060:31:09

This way.

0:31:110:31:12

Putty in my hands.

0:31:130:31:15

Come on. Look at that.

0:31:150:31:18

I think we're making progress.

0:31:180:31:21

I would like to have not had to resort to bribery to get him,

0:31:210:31:26

but I think every moment that I spend with this reindeer

0:31:260:31:31

is valuable.

0:31:310:31:32

I think it's just kind of our friendship is growing

0:31:320:31:35

in sort of baby steps, one step at a time.

0:31:350:31:38

Let's go, pal. Come on.

0:31:380:31:40

HE MAKES CHIVVYING NOISES

0:31:400:31:42

Before I leave, Petri has a farewell gift for me.

0:31:450:31:49

They are great. Thank you very much.

0:31:550:31:58

So when you put yours on, you just keep them on for the whole day?

0:31:580:32:01

-Yeah.

-There we go.

0:32:010:32:03

-Oh!

-Is that good?

-They're brilliant.

0:32:050:32:08

They're so comfortable.

0:32:080:32:10

-Yes.

-My feet are already warm in them.

0:32:100:32:12

Don't worry. I'll look after the reindeer. Come on, you.

0:32:150:32:18

Time to go.

0:32:180:32:19

-OK. Bye.

-Bye.

0:32:210:32:22

Hup!

0:32:230:32:25

Shoo, shoo, shoo!

0:32:250:32:26

It's 11 in the morning and I've got a 12-mile journey ahead of me.

0:32:280:32:33

Good lad.

0:32:360:32:37

I need to make a good time, as the sun will set before two.

0:32:370:32:41

Petri has planned my route and today, I'm heading to a forest

0:32:470:32:50

where I should find my first camp.

0:32:500:32:54

Shoo!

0:32:540:32:55

It isn't long before I'm fully in the Arctic wilderness.

0:32:560:33:00

It's beginning to feel a little bit desolate.

0:33:020:33:04

Even when it's cold when you're in the forest,

0:33:040:33:07

it still feels quite comforting.

0:33:070:33:09

Out here, I feel a little bit more exposed -

0:33:090:33:13

like I feel the temperature has dropped quite considerably.

0:33:130:33:17

The first time since I've been here that I've felt really quite cold.

0:33:200:33:24

It's not only the environment that's challenging.

0:33:260:33:29

Walk on. Come on. Shoo, shoo, shoo!

0:33:290:33:33

My grumpy reindeer is still being difficult...

0:33:330:33:36

..and, as we approach the forest, he slows to a complete stop.

0:33:380:33:43

Good boy. Walk on. Come on. Shoo, shoo!

0:33:430:33:47

Come on, you.

0:33:470:33:49

Come on, lazybones.

0:33:490:33:50

He's really reluctant to go.

0:33:510:33:52

Come on, you. Come on.

0:33:520:33:54

I don't want to drag you. I'm not dragging you and a sleigh.

0:33:540:33:58

Baby steps. Come on.

0:33:590:34:01

Good fella. There you go. Shoo!

0:34:010:34:05

Come on. Right, come on.

0:34:050:34:07

I'm not going to do this.

0:34:080:34:10

Oh!

0:34:100:34:11

That's interesting.

0:34:120:34:14

Right here, there's some tracks - kind of faint here,

0:34:140:34:20

a bit better along here.

0:34:200:34:22

It looks like a very small wolf.

0:34:230:34:27

These are very fresh.

0:34:270:34:29

I reckon from this morning or maybe through the night.

0:34:290:34:34

Lapland has many predators.

0:34:390:34:42

WOLF HOWLS

0:34:420:34:45

Wolf packs regularly target lone reindeer...

0:34:450:34:48

..while ambush hunters like lynx lurk in the forests.

0:34:500:34:54

In Finland, it's estimated the Sami lose up to 20,000 reindeer a year

0:34:570:35:02

to predator attacks.

0:35:020:35:03

Is that a worried expression?

0:35:100:35:12

I haven't seen that before.

0:35:120:35:14

As we get to know each other, we get to know each other's ways,

0:35:140:35:17

each other's looks and that looks like a slightly...

0:35:170:35:20

..a slightly worried look that you've got.

0:35:200:35:23

Years of filming animals has taught me to trust their instincts.

0:35:240:35:27

I need to help him through this potential predator hotspot.

0:35:290:35:34

I'll go first. Come on.

0:35:340:35:36

I'll go first. Come on.

0:35:360:35:38

Walk on. HE CLICKS HIS TONGUE

0:35:380:35:40

Come on. That's a boy.

0:35:400:35:42

That's a boy. Come on.

0:35:420:35:43

Once we've passed the tracks, I can jump on the sleigh again.

0:35:510:35:55

But now, being in this remote forest is making me feel uneasy.

0:35:560:36:01

I was feeling quite confident and now I feel a little bit...

0:36:020:36:07

..mmm, kind of out of my depth.

0:36:070:36:09

I'm on my own without Petri's help and all I've got is a reindeer

0:36:090:36:16

to get me out of trouble.

0:36:160:36:17

Good boy. That's it.

0:36:250:36:27

Excellent.

0:36:270:36:29

Did that pretty well.

0:36:290:36:31

Made it look easy. Oh, hang on.

0:36:310:36:33

Whoa, my harness is coming off.

0:36:330:36:35

Whoa, boy.

0:36:350:36:37

Whoa! Whoa! That ain't good.

0:36:370:36:39

Why did that happen? Has it snapped?

0:36:410:36:44

It has snapped.

0:36:440:36:46

Right, stay, stay, stay there.

0:36:460:36:49

The harness, the halter part of it has just come off.

0:36:490:36:53

It's not broken. It's just come undone.

0:36:530:36:56

It's one thing to feel comfortable and confident

0:36:560:37:00

with something new like this,

0:37:000:37:03

but you don't want to be lured into a false sense of security,

0:37:030:37:06

thinking there's no potential problems

0:37:060:37:08

and there's nothing bad around the corner

0:37:080:37:10

and I think this is quite a good little reminder

0:37:100:37:14

that things can go wrong -

0:37:140:37:16

unexpected things can happen.

0:37:160:37:17

I'm starting to feel a lot more comfortable around this reindeer.

0:37:190:37:23

We are definitely bonding.

0:37:250:37:27

Shoo, shoo!

0:37:270:37:28

At least, I think we are.

0:37:280:37:30

Don't leave me. Don't leave me.

0:37:300:37:32

Don't leave me. Don't leave me, don't leave me.

0:37:320:37:35

Don't leave me. Keep going. Come on.

0:37:360:37:39

Sorry about that. That's not quite what I planned to do.

0:37:400:37:44

OK, right,

0:37:440:37:46

if you see me being dragged along through the snow,

0:37:460:37:49

I want you to stop. OK?

0:37:490:37:51

Shoo! Come on. Shoo!

0:37:510:37:53

I've got to be a little bit quicker.

0:37:530:37:55

Hoi! Here we go. That's it.

0:37:550:37:57

Good boy. Shoo.

0:37:580:38:00

Good lad.

0:38:010:38:03

Oh, chilly on the hands, chilly on the hands.

0:38:030:38:07

My first camp will be in this forest.

0:38:090:38:11

The Sami leave lavvu poles resting against trees

0:38:140:38:17

so they don't get hidden by thick snow.

0:38:170:38:19

Should be around here somewhere.

0:38:210:38:23

In fact, right here at the side of the track.

0:38:240:38:30

Perfect.

0:38:300:38:31

A little bit further. Good lad.

0:38:330:38:36

Whoa.

0:38:360:38:39

Whoa, boy. Good boy.

0:38:390:38:40

Stay there.

0:38:400:38:42

Right, let's tie you up.

0:38:430:38:44

Right.

0:38:490:38:50

This can be done by one man.

0:38:530:38:55

HE LAUGHS

0:38:550:38:56

But can it be done by THIS man?

0:38:560:38:58

I've got a little kind of idea of my own -

0:39:010:39:05

if I actually get that kind of basic structure up,

0:39:050:39:09

I think if I lash these three poles together, raise them up as one,

0:39:090:39:15

and then start to spread the legs out.

0:39:150:39:18

Right, let's see how this is.

0:39:180:39:20

I'm not sure my reindeer is impressed

0:39:230:39:25

with my lavvu building skills.

0:39:250:39:27

One out like that.

0:39:290:39:31

After all, he's watched the experts do this many times.

0:39:310:39:35

Oh!

0:39:380:39:39

But my reindeer has underestimated the persistence

0:39:430:39:48

of a very cold Scotsman.

0:39:480:39:50

It's good.

0:39:500:39:51

I'm very pleased with that.

0:39:530:39:54

With the poles up, all I need to do is wrap my canvas around

0:39:590:40:04

and I've got shelter for the night.

0:40:040:40:06

Mr Door, where are...? Oh, there we go.

0:40:060:40:08

Is that you, Mr door? Yeah, that's you.

0:40:080:40:11

Right, boy.

0:40:180:40:19

My reindeer might not give my lavvu top marks,

0:40:190:40:23

but I know how to win him over.

0:40:230:40:25

The way to a reindeer's heart is through his stomach

0:40:250:40:29

and while he can dig beneath the snow for lichen,

0:40:290:40:33

it also grows on trees.

0:40:330:40:35

This is what I'm looking for,

0:40:350:40:38

but there's a problem here. It's way too high up.

0:40:380:40:42

I need to find one that's lower down.

0:40:420:40:44

He'll love that.

0:40:440:40:46

This one here. I think I can get that.

0:40:460:40:49

This might be achievable.

0:40:490:40:51

It is positively festooned with lichen.

0:40:510:40:55

Do you see what I'm doing for you? Do you see what I'm doing?

0:40:590:41:02

Hup!

0:41:060:41:07

HE SPLUTTERS

0:41:090:41:10

Perfect.

0:41:160:41:18

Hey, Mr Reindeer, your digging days are over.

0:41:180:41:22

Well, this digging day is over!

0:41:220:41:24

Come on, you, look. Lookee, lookee!

0:41:240:41:28

What do you think of this?

0:41:280:41:29

This is like...

0:41:290:41:30

..delicious, fresh from the vine.

0:41:320:41:35

HE CHUCKLES

0:41:350:41:37

There you go.

0:41:370:41:38

Your lips are perfectly designed just to nibble the lichen off.

0:41:380:41:43

Here we go. Look at this bit. Have you seen Lady and the Tramp?

0:41:430:41:45

The famous scene?

0:41:450:41:46

Good boy.

0:41:510:41:53

That evening, yet again the Arctic clouds smother any chances

0:41:560:42:01

of me filming the lights.

0:42:010:42:03

It's -18, the same temperature as my freezer at home.

0:42:060:42:11

It's frozen solid.

0:42:130:42:14

But with a roaring fire,

0:42:170:42:19

the Arctic whitefish from Petri's lake cooks in minutes.

0:42:190:42:24

Oh, man, that is great.

0:42:240:42:27

Mmm! Mm-hm, mm-hm, mm-hm!

0:42:270:42:30

At six in the evening, I try to get some sleep...

0:42:340:42:37

..but after dark is when the forest wakes up.

0:42:420:42:46

Most predators here are nocturnal.

0:42:490:42:51

I do worry about the reindeer out there -

0:42:560:42:59

not because of the cold, but there's many predators around,

0:42:590:43:03

so I think that's kind of keeping me awake, as well.

0:43:030:43:05

This is when my reindeer is at his most vulnerable.

0:43:070:43:11

Normally he'd be with a herd,

0:43:120:43:16

so while he's on his own, I need to look out for him.

0:43:160:43:19

GRUNTING

0:43:190:43:20

Is that my reindeer grunting out there?

0:43:200:43:22

GRUNTING

0:43:240:43:26

OK.

0:43:310:43:32

There's something moving over in the trees.

0:43:340:43:36

I can hear it. What is that, boy?

0:43:400:43:43

BRANCHES MOVING

0:43:450:43:47

It's close, whatever it is.

0:43:510:43:53

This might be about...

0:43:530:43:55

GRUNTING

0:43:550:43:59

Ten metres.

0:43:590:44:01

What the hell is it?

0:44:010:44:02

GRUNTING

0:44:040:44:07

Oh, for God's sake - it's a reindeer!

0:44:070:44:11

Two reindeer, in fact.

0:44:130:44:15

What are you doing out here?

0:44:150:44:17

Scared the life out of me.

0:44:180:44:20

What are you doing, worrying a lonely traveller like me for?

0:44:210:44:25

Panic over. I didn't know what that was.

0:44:270:44:29

A lynx, at least.

0:44:320:44:35

A yeti, at worst.

0:44:350:44:36

Oh, God, it's freezing.

0:44:380:44:39

Freezing, freezing.

0:44:410:44:42

This morning, dawn is at 9:45.

0:44:470:44:51

I had a sleepless night worrying about my reindeer.

0:44:540:44:58

HE COUGHS

0:44:580:45:00

How was your night? Are you coming in here?

0:45:030:45:07

I don't think you'd like it in here. I think it's too hot for you.

0:45:070:45:10

Did you sleep OK?

0:45:100:45:11

Were you cold? Because I was blooming freezing.

0:45:120:45:16

I felt very thirsty at one point,

0:45:180:45:20

then I realised I made a schoolboy error and didn't put my water bottle

0:45:200:45:23

inside my sleeping bag with me, so it was frozen solid.

0:45:230:45:26

I have around four hours of daylight to reach the next camp.

0:45:340:45:38

Today, we've got to climb a big hill and drop down into the next valley.

0:45:410:45:46

In places, the snow is a few feet deep.

0:45:480:45:51

Come on. Shoo!

0:45:510:45:53

It's heavy going on my reindeer, but spending all this time with him

0:45:550:46:00

means I'm beginning to understand when he's struggling.

0:46:000:46:02

Come on. Walk on.

0:46:040:46:06

It turns out his stubbornness is his way of asking for help.

0:46:070:46:12

I'm not dragging you the whole way.

0:46:120:46:13

Come on. Come on, then.

0:46:130:46:15

Come on.

0:46:150:46:17

Good lad. Come on. Come on.

0:46:170:46:20

This makes me feel much less guilty walking up the hills.

0:46:220:46:26

I think sitting on the sleigh, being pulled uphill -

0:46:260:46:30

that is a little bit unfair.

0:46:300:46:31

Getting very attached to this reindeer.

0:46:340:46:36

He's actually very good company.

0:46:360:46:37

He doesn't say much.

0:46:370:46:40

He's very useful.

0:46:400:46:42

He's always there when I need him.

0:46:420:46:43

He's slightly stubborn at times.

0:46:450:46:46

Good lad. Come on. It's starting to level out.

0:46:480:46:51

There we go. There we go.

0:46:510:46:53

Come on. Good boy. Come on, you.

0:46:530:46:56

Up we go. Good lad.

0:46:560:46:58

Up we go. Good boy.

0:46:580:46:59

At the peak, I'm reminded how cold the Arctic can get.

0:47:090:47:13

Now that we're up higher,

0:47:180:47:20

the trees have thinned right out.

0:47:200:47:22

Instead of there being a tree every metre,

0:47:220:47:26

there's a tree every ten or so metres.

0:47:260:47:29

It's very, very different...

0:47:290:47:30

..and every single one of the trees up here is just laden -

0:47:320:47:36

not with snow, it's frost.

0:47:360:47:39

That would have just started with a little dusting of ice

0:47:390:47:42

on each one of these branches,

0:47:420:47:45

and before too long, it looks as if every single tree

0:47:450:47:49

has been dipped in sugar a hundred thousand times.

0:47:490:47:52

There's something kind of otherworldly about it.

0:47:570:48:01

At times, I feel like I kind of need to pinch myself

0:48:020:48:05

just to make sure that this is real, that I'm really here.

0:48:050:48:10

This is such a magical place -

0:48:130:48:17

but its greatest wonder is still eluding me.

0:48:170:48:20

I'm desperate to film the northern lights...

0:48:220:48:25

..but today, like every day I've been here, is cloudy...

0:48:260:48:30

..and I'm starting to lose hope I'll ever see them.

0:48:320:48:34

As much as I'm enjoying hanging out with the reindeer,

0:48:360:48:39

being in this place,

0:48:390:48:40

I do really worry, because with the northern lights,

0:48:400:48:43

there's absolutely no guarantee,

0:48:430:48:45

so despite the fact that I am in the best place,

0:48:450:48:47

at the best time of year, it's far from certain.

0:48:470:48:50

I think, when it comes down to it,

0:48:530:48:55

there is still a huge element of luck to seeing them.

0:48:550:48:59

So I think maybe I just need to enjoy as much of this experience

0:49:020:49:07

when I can, because my ultimate goal might not be achievable.

0:49:070:49:12

Good boy.

0:49:150:49:16

As we approach the downhill, my blues are quickly blown away.

0:49:200:49:25

Over. Over we go. Whoa-ho!

0:49:250:49:27

Good boy. Shoo!

0:49:290:49:31

# Dashing through the snow on a one-horse open sleigh

0:49:330:49:37

# Over the fields we go laughing all the way. #

0:49:370:49:41

Oh, my goodness. You are dashing through the snow.

0:49:410:49:44

Reindeer can reach speeds of up to 37mph,

0:49:460:49:49

and we're soon making up for lost time.

0:49:490:49:52

# Jingle bells, jingle bells jingle all the way

0:49:520:49:56

# Oh, what fun it is to ride on a one-horse open sleigh. #

0:49:560:50:00

It's not a horse. # Jingle bells, jingle bells

0:50:000:50:03

# Jingle all the way

0:50:030:50:05

# Oh, what fun it is to ride on a one-horse reindeer... #

0:50:050:50:08

No.

0:50:080:50:10

# Sleigh. #

0:50:100:50:11

Good boy.

0:50:110:50:12

Whoa, boy. Whoa.

0:50:160:50:18

Whoa.

0:50:210:50:22

Whoa. Good lad.

0:50:220:50:25

Well done. You're the best.

0:50:250:50:28

You're the best.

0:50:280:50:30

Boy, are you hungry?

0:50:300:50:32

After all that activity, my reindeer deserves a quick feed.

0:50:330:50:39

MUNCHING

0:50:390:50:41

Because the forest is so quiet,

0:50:410:50:43

you can hear a lot of strange noises that you wouldn't think a reindeer

0:50:430:50:47

would make. The noisy munching is one thing,

0:50:470:50:51

but all these kind of gurglings and garglings and rumbles

0:50:510:50:54

from his stomach are really quite peculiar...

0:50:540:50:57

..and that's because he's a ruminant.

0:50:580:51:00

He's ruminating on partially digestive food,

0:51:000:51:05

so he'll chew it on the first pass, swallow it,

0:51:050:51:08

and then that food will be regurgitated to be re-chewed.

0:51:080:51:11

MUNCHING

0:51:110:51:14

He can eat for the rest of the morning

0:51:140:51:16

without actually having to find any new food.

0:51:160:51:19

Four stomach chambers

0:51:190:51:21

allow reindeer to squeeze every bit of energy out of lichen.

0:51:210:51:26

MUNCHING

0:51:260:51:29

I can't believe that I was actually scared of you to begin with.

0:51:290:51:32

Not scared of you,

0:51:320:51:33

but scared of that big prong you have coming out of your head.

0:51:330:51:37

I think because you were a bit nervous with me initially,

0:51:370:51:40

you were moving your head around a lot more -

0:51:400:51:42

but now, you're calm...

0:51:420:51:45

..I'm calm.

0:51:450:51:47

Just a couple of buddies making their way through the forest.

0:51:470:51:50

Within hours, we arrive at the place Petri recommended...

0:52:000:52:04

..and it looks perfect.

0:52:060:52:09

One great thing about this place is there's a big wide-open area -

0:52:110:52:16

A lot of distance between me and the trees,

0:52:160:52:18

so the horizon stretches all the way round to there,

0:52:180:52:21

and if the lights appear maybe on that side,

0:52:210:52:24

I can go out further out into the lake -

0:52:240:52:27

but the one good thing today,

0:52:270:52:29

despite the fact that there's some low-lying cloud,

0:52:290:52:33

up above, it's looking a little bit blue...

0:52:330:52:36

..and that's a good thing.

0:52:370:52:38

Finally, with the skies completely clear,

0:52:500:52:54

I get a glimpse of the phenomenon I've been searching for.

0:52:540:52:57

It's not what I was expecting.

0:52:590:53:01

It's like a big sort of smear across the sky.

0:53:020:53:06

It stretches round in a kind of rainbow,

0:53:060:53:09

a sort of single colour of green,

0:53:090:53:10

all the way around to the horizon on that side.

0:53:100:53:13

What I'm really hoping for is that classic northern lights,

0:53:170:53:21

big flowing river of light, a big ribbon through the sky.

0:53:210:53:24

This is tantalisingly close to seeing what I've come here to see.

0:53:240:53:30

As quickly as they appeared...

0:53:350:53:36

..the lights vanished.

0:53:390:53:41

I've no way of telling when or if they will come back.

0:53:430:53:47

Without cloud cover, temperatures plummet to -25.

0:53:500:53:55

Oh, oh!

0:53:570:53:59

You might wonder why I'm standing in these conditions with no gloves on.

0:53:590:54:04

The simple fact is, that this hi-tech piece of equipment

0:54:040:54:09

needs the warmth of a human hand to function.

0:54:090:54:12

It's touch-screen, so as much as I want to keep my gloves on,

0:54:120:54:17

I can't actually operate the camera with them on.

0:54:170:54:20

As the hours pass, standing out in the Arctic begins to take its toll.

0:54:220:54:28

Oh, goodness me!

0:54:280:54:30

This level of coldness actually makes you really tired.

0:54:300:54:34

You're using up a lot of energy

0:54:340:54:36

just to stay warm without even moving around.

0:54:360:54:40

It's like everything is cold.

0:54:400:54:42

You feel the cold coming up from the ground.

0:54:420:54:44

It's coming in from all sides.

0:54:440:54:45

It's just all-consuming.

0:54:450:54:47

I'm just wondering if there is - if I have a cut-off point,

0:54:490:54:52

if it's going to get so cold

0:54:520:54:54

that it's not going to be possible to stand out here.

0:54:540:54:58

My eyes begin to play tricks on me,

0:55:010:55:04

and I start to question what I'm seeing.

0:55:040:55:07

There is something happening

0:55:090:55:11

in the sky

0:55:110:55:13

but neither my eyes nor my camera

0:55:130:55:15

can fully see it as the northern lights.

0:55:150:55:17

It's weird because at times it looks like...

0:55:170:55:20

..little clouds moving very fast and then, as it is at the moment,

0:55:210:55:25

look at that, it's just burst into life!

0:55:250:55:28

Holy smokes!

0:55:280:55:29

Gee whiz!

0:55:290:55:31

That is phenomenal!

0:55:310:55:33

It just changes in an instant.

0:55:350:55:37

Look at that.

0:55:370:55:38

My goodness, that is something else.

0:55:400:55:42

It starts off as a sort of...

0:55:450:55:47

almost an underwhelming cloud and suddenly it starts to shift

0:55:470:55:53

and take form and the lights start to dance

0:55:530:55:57

and flicker and move

0:55:570:55:59

and what is just a smear becomes this sort of rich texture

0:55:590:56:03

that's moving across the sky from horizon to horizon.

0:56:030:56:07

Every single second is precious,

0:56:180:56:20

and you get a sense, every moment you watch this,

0:56:200:56:23

that as far back in time, all those millions of years,

0:56:230:56:27

that this has been taking place,

0:56:270:56:29

it has never been like this before...

0:56:290:56:32

..and then it changes again.

0:56:330:56:35

After a couple of hours, the aurora builds to an incredible crescendo.

0:56:520:56:57

These particles from the sun have travelled nearly 93 million miles.

0:57:050:57:11

It's quite hard to take it all in.

0:57:130:57:15

It is just... It is so grand, so spectacular.

0:57:150:57:20

It is... It's mind-blowing.

0:57:210:57:23

I couldn't have filmed any of this without my reindeer's help.

0:57:350:57:39

After a bumpy start, I can't imagine being here with anyone else...

0:57:400:57:46

..and I want something special to remember our time together.

0:57:470:57:51

That's a boy. Handsome, handsome man.

0:57:520:57:55

You're a good fellow.

0:57:560:57:58

Who says reindeers don't like hugs?

0:57:580:58:01

Good boy. Right, OK.

0:58:010:58:03

Right...

0:58:030:58:05

We'll do a selfie. You know what a selfie is, don't you?

0:58:050:58:08

Everyone does. Even reindeer.

0:58:080:58:10

You've got to lift your head. Best smile.

0:58:100:58:12

Right, boy. Look this way.

0:58:120:58:14

HE CLICKS HIS TONGUE

0:58:140:58:16

Three, two, one...

0:58:160:58:18

This has been an incredible journey

0:58:210:58:24

and to top it off, I think I've got my Christmas card sorted.
