Eight anglers embark on a global adventure... | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
This is just the most incredible place I think I've ever been. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
..that will test them in every kind of water. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
-I suppose this is what we call extreme coarse fishing. -It really is. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
They will compete in punishing weather... | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Oh! This is getting dangerous. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
..and extraordinary environments. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
That is why I go fishing. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
And face some of the toughest places to fish in the world. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
We are going down here. I've got a pretty major leak in the boat. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
They will be judged by international fishing expert, Matt Hayes, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
and by fishermen from all over the planet, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
who will decide which of them stays on to the next location. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
I'm quite conscious I think I'm the only one that hasn't had a hook up. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Last time, the anglers fished the white water | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
of the widest rapids in the world. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
I've never ever fished anything like this in my life. It's ridiculous. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
And got to know the Mekong River better than they expected. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
Oh, I'm in. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Jo and Dan stood out. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
That fish instinct that I've got is working well again. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
But the extreme heat... | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
..proved too much for Emma. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Absolutely wilting. I feel faint. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
And sadly, she left the expedition. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Good innings, girl. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
This time, there is no shortage of fish... | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
I've lost count how many fish I've had now. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
..as the remaining five anglers... | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Heads up, Joey! | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
..explore the Pacific coast... | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
Wow! | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55 | |
..of Costa Rica. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Doing this is going to be the greatest experience of my life. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
A land of rainforest, volcanoes and oceans. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
Costa Rica is home to a greater density of species | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
than anywhere else on the planet. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
A quarter of the country is made up of protected forests and reserves. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
So the jungles hum with life. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
But the land is not what the anglers are here for. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Bordered by both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
the seas are teeming with fish. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
There is no better arena than Costa Rica. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
They have been protecting the fish here for decades | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and it's really paid off. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
We're talking here about some of the biggest fish in the ocean. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
People have got to start to perform. They are going to get chances. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
The question is, will they take them? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
That was absolutely crazy. I have been in bigger cars than that! | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
What an experience. What a way to come to Costa Rica. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
Matt will be judging alongside local expert Todd Staley, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
named Sportsman of the Year for his work on conservation in Costa Rica. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
Costa Rica is probably one of the best places in the world to fish. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
Just being on the water is like being in a different world. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
These fish are real adrenaline pushers. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
They are going to make you shake. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
Don't fall in with the crocodile, Pete! | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
There are ants everywhere. On the board, in the trees. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
There is a monkey up there. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
So much wildlife. Vultures everywhere, lizards. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
It is a really beautiful place. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
I'm a country bumpkin from Wales. I'm used to seeing cows and sheep. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
If there's as much fish in the water as there is animals in the jungle, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
then we are in for an epic week. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
This week, I think potentially the fishing could be off the charts. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
I'm hoping so. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
This week in Costa Rica is all about speed and the anglers will have | 0:04:02 | 0:04:07
to learn quickly to catch some of the most extraordinary fish in the ocean. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
Welcome to Costa Rica. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
This is one of the most extraordinary habitats | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
and it translates to "rich coast". | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
As the name suggests, these waters are teeming with fish. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
For the first part of your Costa Rican expedition, | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
you're going to be going after the world-famous roosterfish. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
It's an inshore species. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
It's only found in the eastern tropical Pacific. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
They grow up to over 100 pounds. They are a very powerful fish. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
Sometimes they will take to the air when you hook them. Sometimes they will run. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
You are going to have a choice between trolling with dead baits | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
and using spinning equipment. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
How you actually deploy that equipment is going to be up to you. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
We are looking for the angler who catches the greatest combined length of roosterfish. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
So the more you catch and the bigger fish, | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
the more likely you are to win this challenge. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
Good luck. Go fish! | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
-Thank you. -Cheers, guys. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Rooster fish action, guys. Very nice too. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
With the help of local guides, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
the anglers will have five hours fishing inshore | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
to catch as many rooster fish as they can. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
See you at the other side, mate. All the best. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Although they will be fishing side by side, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
they will be competing against each other. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
-Tight lines, guys. -Have a good one. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
Costa Rica in Central America. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
The Osa Peninsula on the Pacific coast is where lush rainforest | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
meets the ocean in the most biodiverse region of the country. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
The anglers' first test will be fishing from boats close to the shore | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
where the volcanic ridge provides rocky reefs | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
just beneath the water surface, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
creating the perfect habitat for a huge variety of fish, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
including the rock star of the ocean, the rooster fish. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
Rooster fish have a striking appearance, | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
with stripes along their body and a massive collapsible dorsal fin. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
They hunt in packs, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
looking for schools of bait fish not far off the beach. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
The rooster fish is one of the fishes that has been | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
top of my bucket list for a long, long time, so I'm pretty excited. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
I'm going to be like a kid in a sweet shop all day today. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
-This looks like a good spot. -Yes. It looks fishy, doesn't it? | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
-Look at that! -Let's go. Let's get some bait out. -Come on, rooster. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
IMPERSONATES A ROOSTER | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
As the anglers start fishing, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
they have a choice of two techniques - popping and trolling. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
This spot looks pretty good. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
We've got the rainforest dropping right down onto the beach. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
There is a reef here. We're going to be trolling along the edge of the reef so perfect rooster territory. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
Trolling is a technique which uses lures or baits. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
These are dragged at a constant speed behind a boat either at or | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
just beneath the surface, provoking attacks from predatory fish. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
When a fish takes the bait, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
it's up to the angler to set the hook at exactly the right time. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
We are going to bounce dead sardines on the surface | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
but because it's moving, you have to give it time to eat. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
So if you are too quick you are going to lose it. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
It's all about quick reaction and timing. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
When you get a take, the line will take off and let the fish run. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
You have to wait five to six seconds and then switch it on, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
tension and set into it. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
Because it gives the fish time to get the bait in its mouth. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
If you set too soon it might just have the tail end, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
whereas you give it time to get hold of the whole fish. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
There we go. He hit it. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
Something just touched the bait. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Something keeps hitting the bait, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
but it's not actually taking them down properly. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
Another drop take. We're just going to bring this in and check the bait. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
The fish are grabbing them and then letting go. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
They're not swimming away with them, which is what we need them to do. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
Have you seen the state of that? | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
We're going to do a bit of lure fishing. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:12
With a lure you get better action and it looks more alive. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
It's got a bib on the front so it will do that behind the boat. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
That won't get damaged. It's just a different technique to what we are using there. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
Trolling with dead bait or lures | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
is attracting some interest from the fish. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
But it isn't the anglers' only option. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
So we've got two rods at the back, trolling. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
One with a deep diving lure | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
and one with a dead bait on which is trolling along the top | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
and then we'll do some popping off the front here. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
So we're covering all bases, really. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
My goodness, I feel like a drunk person, stumbling around everywhere. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
Jo looks like she's popping off the front of the boat. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
Popping uses a lure with a concave face | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
to create the maximum commotion on the surface. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
But instead of being dragged behind the boat, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
it's cast with a lighter spinning rod | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
and retrieved quickly in a jerky motion to imitate a small fish. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:04
So the popper makes lots of commotion, | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
the fish comes up, grabs it and I catch my rooster. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
-Exactly. -Simple. -Rooster fish like it fast. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
They are smart and if it's moving too slow they will figure out it's not real and they won't eat it. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
It's more exciting, popping. It's active. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
I don't know what to do, whether to give it a bit of time and then once you've caught a fish, try popping. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
There's a lot to keep an eye on. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
Are our anglers more likely to catch something on the popper or the dead sardines? | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
-Nothing is written in stone in fishing. -Which is why you double up. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
-I might give it a go with the popping. -Be careful, James. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
-Your cast is good. Your retrieve is too slow. -Too slow? | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
Can they actually reel in the popper too fast? | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
For these fish, I don't think they can. I guess if you were Superman you probably could! | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
The key is to try and keep tension | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
and just create as much disturbance as possible on top of the water. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
It's dangerous this, mind. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
-Is that a fish? Fish on. -We've seen a fish. Is it on? | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
It's not. The hook must have got caught and it created tension | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
against the water when you were dragging it. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Who do you think is going to excel in this task? | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
I think Sam has got the most relevant experience. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
He's done more world travelling, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
he's probably dealt with fish like this before. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
Dan's going to have the kind of general feel for the water, | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
he learns very quickly. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:38
Jo's really tenacious, she has those zonal moments | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
where she really concentrates and then you see her come out fighting. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
James is really good with technique, | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
I can see him casting the poppers and working them well. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
Ripon, well, he might struggle a little bit. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
This will be so new to him, and there's so much to take in. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
But who knows? | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
Oh! Here we go! Here we go! | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
Yeah, we're in, we're in, we're in, we're in. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
We got something on here. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
After just an hour on the water... | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
Oh, this is some fish. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:07
..Costa Rica lives up to its reputation. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
You got one, mate? | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
Got a fish on, mate? | 0:11:12 | 0:11:13
If it's a rooster it's going to be a pretty good-sized one. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
-Look at that thing. -What is it, a Spanish mackerel? -Mackerel, yeah. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
-It's not a rooster. -It's not a rooster. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
A jack from the Pacific of Costa Rica. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
Releasing it nose-first gets the oxygen flowing through their gills. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
OK, fish on! | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
Ooh! | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33 | |
Oh! | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35 | |
It's gone. Shame. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
Bye, jack! | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
Fish on! | 0:11:39 | 0:11:40
Hey, James has got one on now. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
-Are you in, James? -Yeah. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
The fish are coming thick and fast. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
What is it? Oh, a massive needlefish. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
But still no sign of the roosterfish. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
Look at the size...! | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
That's the most amazing fish I've ever seen. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
-What a fish! -Yeah! One each. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
Everyone except Jo has caught a fish. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
Just not the right kind. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
We're getting hit by these small jacks. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
We're not coming into touch with roosters. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
The captain reckons he knows another spot where we might do better. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
Roosterfish patrol the coastal areas, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
seeking out river mouths and submerged rocks | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
in their hunt for food. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:24
Their distinctive dorsal fin stands up on end | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
as they speed after their prey. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
-This expedition is all about speed. -Yeah. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
They're totally streamlined, and when they're swimming, | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
quite often they fold back their fins so there are no projections. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
It's a little bit like a cyclist, you know - | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
the high speed thing where everything is smooth. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
Every fish has its own personality, | 0:12:45 | 0:12:46
and these roosterfish, they're real powerful fish. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
Even the little guys are powerful. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
You have to work the fish to the boat, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
and the fish is going to see the boat | 0:12:53 | 0:12:54
and he's going to say "Adios!" and take off again. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
We're off, we're off, we're off, we're off, we're off. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
Yeah, got him. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
What is it? | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
He's off! | 0:13:05 | 0:13:06
Oh, he's on the surface. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
-Oh! What have we got? -Rooster? | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
Did look like a rooster to me. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
Look at that run! Oh, yes. We got a rooster. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
They don't half pull some. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
Beautiful. What a fish. Woohoo! | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
Don't they hang on?! | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
He's in the boat. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
That...is what we came here for. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
The roosterfish. Look at the dorsal on it. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
What a beautiful fish. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:33
Straight down. I'm over the moon. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
Chuffed to bits. Muchas gracias! | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
Good move. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:39
Sam's the first angler to catch the target species. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
And the others change tack, too. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
There's a load of frigatebirds circling in a certain area. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
The birds eat sardines, which is what the roosterfish feed on. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
So where there's birds, there's fish. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:52
Where there's fish, there's hopefully roosterfish. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
That is it, back! | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
You got it. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
Roosterfish! | 0:14:04 | 0:14:05
Get in. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:06
James took a fish as well. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Do you think that's because we suddenly went over a school? | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
We came into this patch of clean water. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
Colour change is one of the things that often brings fish together, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
and that's what we've got going right here. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
-You've got a fish on! -Rooster? -Yes! -Rooster! | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
Oh, look at him! | 0:14:22 | 0:14:23
Probably the best-looking fish I've ever seen in my life. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
I'm over the moon. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
You got a bite! | 0:14:28 | 0:14:29
Oh! | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31 | |
OK, buddy, you're OK. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
Woo! That was amazing! | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
Yeah! | 0:14:35 | 0:14:36 | |
Get in! They don't half run, them roosterfish. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
It's like a completely different power. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
Yeah. Aah! | 0:14:41 | 0:14:42
Oh! | 0:14:42 | 0:14:43 | |
Look at me! I'm a mess! | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
I can't believe the others got just about everything - needlefish, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
roosterfish, jacks. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
We haven't got anything. | 0:14:58 | 0:14:59
Come on, fishies! | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
Rooster! | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
-Roo-ooster! -There we go. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
We're on, we're on, we're on. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:06
-Can you see what that is? -I think it's another little rooster. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
Nice. He's doing all right. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:11
Rooster number two! | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13
Sam and Jo take the lead, | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
whilst Dan still has none. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
Thanks, buddy, off you go. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
Roosters often travel in schools, | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
so the faster the anglers can retrieve their lure | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
and cast it again, the more chance they have of catching. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
There we go. It's another rooster, another rooster. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
Here he comes. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:31
-Another rooster! -Aww... | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
Roosterfish! Hee hee hee! | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
Yes, rooster three. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
Yes! Look! | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
Ladies and gentlemen, we're fishing! | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
So Dan's the only one that hasn't caught roosters now, | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
which, if you know anything about his personality, Todd, | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
he's slightly grumpier than you! | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
So he's not going to be happy, man, I tell you. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
I do get stubborn when it comes to fishing. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
I have thrown the odd tantrum when things haven't gone my way. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
I am not a very good loser at all. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
I do get very grumpy if I'm not winning. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
Even at home, fishing can make or break Dan's mood. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:08
Family comes first with Dan. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
But he does love his fishing, | 0:16:11 | 0:16:13
and without his fishing, he's a grumpy Dan. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
When Dan's grumpy, you'll know. You can see the frown in his eyebrows, | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
you can see by his face. Doesn't even have to open his mouth. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
All of a sudden, Jo's gone on a monster run. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:25
Fair play for her. Personally, I want to catch some fish. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
I changed my lure, I saw the lure she used, | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
just having a bash and see what happens. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
Time is running out to catch as many roosterfish as possible. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:42
He's on, he's on! | 0:16:44 | 0:16:45
Wahey! We're off again! Number four. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
He might not be winning on numbers, | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
but James is keen to impress with his technique. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
Trying to keep your balance and do this at the same time, | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
and not get taken... I can't even speak! Just worn out. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
Oh, God, you had a bite! | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
Dan finally gets his chance. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:06
Roosterfish! | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
Giving me a great battle. Giving me a great, great battle. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
Fish on! | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
Yes, come on! | 0:17:15 | 0:17:16
Got to keep the line tight. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
Come on! Get in! | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
Get in. Yes! | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
I was getting worried, then. I didn't think today | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
was going to be my day. But my coil reached the fish. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
And I'm so, so happy. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:32
I'm determined to get one on this. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:35
Sometimes you just get that fish you need. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
I'm on! | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
I'm on. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:17:41 | 0:17:42
Whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
Oi, oi, we're off! Whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Nice. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:52 | |
The hook didn't pull. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:53
Completely different feeling on this rod. It's so light. | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
And hopefully, it's a roosterfish. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
What is that? Is it a bonito? | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
Ah! | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07 | |
OK? | 0:18:07 | 0:18:08 | |
I'm actually glad it wasn't any bigger, because | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
that was a hell of a fight. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:15
On the popper! | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
Whoo! Oh! | 0:18:17 | 0:18:18
Wow! | 0:18:20 | 0:18:21 | |
I got one popping. That was all I wanted to do. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
Wasn't a roosterfish, but just glad I stuck at it. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
If this is anything to go by, I can't wait for the rest of the week. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
Ripon finishes the challenge with one, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
James and Dan two, | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
Jo three | 0:18:39 | 0:18:40
and Sam four. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:41
But the winner will be the angler with the longest total length. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
What a difference a week makes. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:54
Had a positive storm of fish today. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
All of you have caught something or other. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
Todd, do you want to give some feedback | 0:18:59 | 0:19:01
on how you think Dan did? He obviously caught the sun! | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
Now, the first time I went past you today, | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
you looked bored, you looked frustrated. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
You were definitely more preoccupied with what Jo was catching. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
We know how grumpy you can be, but you did get your act together. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
You caught a couple of roosterfish so it was a great recovery. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
On to James now. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:22
What impressed me was, you chose probably the most difficult | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
type of fishing, is throwing the popper | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
and you stuck with it for a long time and you made it successful. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
You caught several different species of fish, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
used the popper well. You did OK. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
How did Jo get on? | 0:19:36 | 0:19:37
You were throwing the popper. You were working it hard. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
You did actually get quite a lot of chances. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
You converted a number of them | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44
and ended up with a very good tally of fish. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
Sam, I believe, caught four roosters. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:49
I was a little disappointed that you didn't use the popper more. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
I think it was a mistake not to try it, but, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
with such a good tally of fish, it was a strong performance. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
-Ripon, it looks like you've been hugging roosters. -We had a moment. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
The statistics don't lie. You didn't catch a lot of roosterfish. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
But generally, with the equipment, you looked comfortable. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
You played the fish well. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
Well, they say size isn't everything, but in this case, | 0:20:09 | 0:20:11
we were looking for total length of the roosterfish. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
Ripon, you sadly came last. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
James, you came fourth. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
In any other week, you really could have won this. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
You got such a variety of species. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
Sadly, you didn't today. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
So the overall winner with a total length of 252cm | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
goes to... | 0:20:29 | 0:20:30
..Sam! Very good. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
Sam, your prize for winning today | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
is that you get to choose your team for tomorrow. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
-Cheers, guys. -See you in the morning. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
Goodbye. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
-Ah-ha-ha! Muchas gracias, senor! -Mucho gusto! | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Good day fishing. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:57
Come out on top, so pretty chuffed with today. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
I knew myself that this morning wasn't good enough. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:02
And I got a lot better. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:03
So, yeah, justified comments. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
Coming bottom is never nice, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:07
but it's obviously put me behind, so the next two, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:11
I've really got to smash them. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:12
Looking forward to tomorrow. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:13
Get a good night's sleep tonight. Someone's got to go, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
and it's getting harder because everyone's good. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
Ah, fantastic! | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
Pura vida! Pura vida! | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
For their second test, the anglers will be staying on the same | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
stretch of coastline, but this time, they'll be on land. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
The Osa Peninsula forms one side of the Golfo Dulce, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
and it's through the mouth of the gulf that vast numbers | 0:21:41 | 0:21:45
of fish migrate, sheltering in the jagged, volcanic reefs. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:50
The Guaymi are the earliest inhabitants of the Osa Peninsula, | 0:21:50 | 0:21:54
and fish here the traditional way. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
Whilst commercial netting has been banned, | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
the Guaymi are allowed to use nets for subsistence fishing. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
Behind us is the Golfo Dulce, which means "sweet gulf". | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
This is a rich habitat for all sorts of marine life. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
In my hand, I have a cast net that you will all remember from Laos. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
And the yo-yo, also known as a hand line, that you all used in Cuba. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:25
You're going to fish like the local people today. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
It's subsistence living. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
They're allowed to use nets to catch their bait. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
And then, they generally fish with hand lines. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
You will use the bait that you catch to try to catch some fish to eat. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:37
The further you can cast with the hand line, | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
the better chances you have of a nice fish, and the secret | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
to that is getting the momentum, like a lasso, and turning it loose. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
You're going to be judged on what you catch with your hand line, | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
but, of course, if you don't catch some bait first, | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
then that's not going to really be very effective. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
So remember those skills that you learned in Cuba and Laos | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
and get them into action very quickly. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:03
Sam, you won yesterday. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
As your prize, you win your choice of team. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
Based on Cuba and the hand lining skills, | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
I'd like to choose James and Ripon to be in my team today. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
OK, first off, you need to go and get your cast nets to catch your bait. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:19
-Go fish! -Cheers, guys. See you later. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
I think Jo and Dan are quite a formidable team, actually. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
I'm not so sure that was the wisest choice. I would have picked Jo. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
What have we got here? | 0:23:29 | 0:23:30
Ooh, look at these. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
Going to be a different style to what we did in Laos. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
Interesting, the little drawstring, parcel. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
How hard is this? | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
For someone that's grown up with a rod and reel in their hand, | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
it's very difficult. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
The idea here is that the anglers get to use some of the skills | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
they've already acquired. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:48
In Cuba, they learned how to use traditional hand lines. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
In Laos, they learned how to use cast nets. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
In this particular challenge, | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
they'll use the throw net to catch some bait and then use | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
it as dead bait on hand lines, hopefully to catch bigger fish. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:03
So it's going to test the skills that, hopefully, they've retained. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
Yeah, technique is to hold the net at the top, like that, | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
get a weight, make it look like a bit of a skirt. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
Not going to wear them, and try to make a circular movement. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
And it doesn't land quite right! | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
The hardest thing about these type of nets is getting the spread | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
because what you don't want to do is launch a net out, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:30
it land like a like an absolute bullet through the water, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
scares all the fish and then you've got to move to another area. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
Pretty happy with that. Hopefully, we're going to catch ourselves | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
some bait because if we don't get any bait, we're in trouble, really. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
Throw that. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:42
Wonderful! | 0:24:43 | 0:24:45
It's a different technique to the one we used in Laos, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
but it's the same idea - perfect circle is what we're after. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
-Whilst Jo is quick to learn these new skills... -Hey! | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
-..Dan, the traditional netsman, is a little slower to adapt. -Ah! | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
Nice and smooth, Dan, don't force it. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
-This is judges back-seat driving now. -Yeah. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
I think he feels the pressure | 0:25:06 | 0:25:07
because he's obviously the nets man, so he feels like | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
he should be automatic straightaway and that's not the case, is it? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
It's completely different to what he does. But he'll get there. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:16
Close but no cigar. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
All right. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:19
Having practised their casting, it's time to take the plunge. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:23
-We're ready to go. -When you look at the surf behind us, | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
it seems impossible that there are fish anywhere near all of that. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
You need to try and get it out a little bit further than where | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
the wave's breaking and then, of course, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
it's going to move with the current | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
and once it moves so far, you've got to bring it in and do it again. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:40
The thing about this kind of rough surf is that predatory fish | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
look for an advantage. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
They're always looking to beat up on the small fish, so when the water's | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
a little bit coloured and stirred up | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
and when the bait fish are getting thrown around a little bit, | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
that's when the predatory fish, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:54
with their superior eyesight and speed, have got the advantage. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
Oh. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00 | |
SHE YELPS | 0:26:02 | 0:26:03
SHE LAUGHS | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
The conditions are shocking! | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
In a way, it's good fun but there's a little danger element. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
You've just got to have your wits about you | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
and keep an eye on the waves. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:38
You can see the locals there with their nets. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
They're not going to give up because of the conditions. If these guys can do it, surely we can. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:44
It's pretty rocky out there. I'm like a wounded soldier now. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
It takes a lot to faze me. It's only a wave, it's only a cut. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
Distance is going to be the key. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
Obviously, the net's got to land open | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
but you've got to get beyond that surf | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
and, in Laos, they were fishing from boats, | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
so the fish are underneath them. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:01
Here, they're going to be away from them, so they've got to be able | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
to throw the net open and at distance. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
Heads up, Joey, heads up, Joey. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
Finally managing to work with the waves, | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
the anglers have just 30 minutes to catch the bait fish they need. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
With the throw nets, | 0:27:14 | 0:27:15
I don't think anybody could catch in these conditions. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:19
I've got a fish! | 0:27:19 | 0:27:20
-I tell a lie! -I've got a bloody fish! I got a fish. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
-That is an absolute whopper. -Yes. Whoa! -There you go. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:30
You got any yet, Rip? | 0:27:30 | 0:27:31
-They're there. -Look at that for a haul. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
-Whoa! 14. -I've got loads of fish. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
That was a good shot, look at that. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
I have a fish! | 0:27:39 | 0:27:40
It's one of the tiniest fish in the world. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:42
A tiny, tiny fish. Right, back out there. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
Even at home, Jo has a determined streak. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
I am quite a competitive person, | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52
I don't like to be made to look like I'm a wuss. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
So if there's an instance where, you know, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
there's something that I'm a little nervous about doing, | 0:27:57 | 0:27:59
if everyone else is doing it, then I have to do it too. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
Oh, oh, oh! I've got two. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
I'm coming round to your patch. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:06
James has had a few, I don't think Ripon's had any, bless him. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:09
I did have one in the net but it just slipped out. Just really small. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:14
Can't believe you have to go through all this just to get the bait. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
Fish. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:19 | |
And Dan finally gets one in the net. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:23
Oh, come on! | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
Got another fish. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
There, my friend, is a little bit of bait. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:32
That's only half the job, isn't it? | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
We've got to go and catch the big fish now. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:36
OK, everyone, that is time for you to all come in. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:41
That's my meagre little catch. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:48
Yeah, it'd look a bit bad | 0:28:48 | 0:28:50
if the nets man didn't catch anything | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
while we were doing a challenge. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:53
-Where's your bait? -Oh, no, I didn't catch any. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
That's all right. We're sharing all these, anyway, mate, | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
so it doesn't matter. We're all in this together. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:00
Beautiful, ain't they? Well done, boys. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
So 36-6. This team is the winner in terms of the bait fish. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:14
Go out there and try and get those bigger fish, guys. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:18
The anglers will have to use the bait they've caught to catch | 0:29:18 | 0:29:21
the bigger fish by hand line. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:23
The team with the heaviest haul wins. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:26
I've seen hand lines used from a boat, | 0:29:27 | 0:29:30
you just lower it down the back. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:31
How do you use one from the beach, though? | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
It's kind of like lassoing a steer, you've got to get it going | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
and whip it out. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
The weight and bait at the end of the hand line are thrown out | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
using a lasso action to reach as far as possible. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
More line should then be spooled out from the yo-yo, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
allowing the current | 0:29:49 | 0:29:51
to take the bait to the predatory fish lying just beyond the surf. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:55
It's obviously the right time to be fishing because the locals | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
are out there now. The pelicans are diving out there too. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
The good thing is that the pelicans are starting to work the water now, | 0:30:01 | 0:30:05
bombing into the schools of bait fish. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
The pelicans start working, the other fish come in for the buffet. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
Right, yeah, we're ready. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:12
-Come on, you little ripper. -Here we go. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:14
Watch out, James! | 0:30:15 | 0:30:17
Surely they're going to have to be out quite deep in that water | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
with the big surf all around them. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:22
When they're throwing, they're off balance, and the wave hits them | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
but when you're fishing, you can time the wave break, | 0:30:25 | 0:30:28
throw over it and then back away from it, spooling more line out. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
If you look at the local guys fishing, they're very adept | 0:30:32 | 0:30:35
at dodging between the waves - they can read the water really well. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:38
This is a very fast learning curve. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:40
We said we'd push them, we said we'd challenge them, | 0:30:40 | 0:30:43
we've certainly done that. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:45
I know the locals are here so obviously there's fish here. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:48
I'm going to stay here where they're catching fish. | 0:30:48 | 0:30:50
Our feet are buried. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
Yeah, feet slowly get buried, I've got boots full of gravel, | 0:30:52 | 0:30:56
you've got to fight the surf every time, | 0:30:56 | 0:30:58
your bait's rolling around everywhere so you've got to... | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
-Face-fulls of water. -Face-fulls of salt water as well. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
-This doesn't happen when you're coarse fishing. -No. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
I'm sitting in my nice little chair, minding my own business. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:12
Ripon lives with his family in Bedfordshire. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
He learned to fish with his two brothers. | 0:31:17 | 0:31:20
Fishing means everything to Ripon. When he sleeps, he dreams about it. | 0:31:20 | 0:31:24
He's woken me up before and said, | 0:31:24 | 0:31:26
"Raju, give me the reel, give me the reel!" | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
Stuff like that. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:29
Yeah, it's his life, pretty much, at the moment. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:33
Fishing is a massive part of my life. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
Even on Christmas or anything like that, birthdays, I go fishing. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:41
Sometimes, my lunch breaks, I pop down for a quick half an hour | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
to see what I can pluck out - come back to work stinking of fish. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:47
All right, Joey? | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
-I'm going further out again. -I can't go out that far. -Fair enough. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:01
-Jo, how are you doing? -Struggling with the waves a bit. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
I need to be taller. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:06
I think I need to be a bit heavier to deal with the waves. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:08
They totally beat me. | 0:32:08 | 0:32:10
So you take some line off for this? | 0:32:10 | 0:32:12
-Like that, you see? -Timing, isn't it? -It is all about timing. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:15
Jo's action, start to finish, is really smooth. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
Yeah, she's pure technique and she's got it. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:21
Jo! Is that the first time you've been doing this? | 0:32:21 | 0:32:24
Yeah, this kind of hand line, definitely. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
Just an hour left of daylight. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:37
Jo might have caught the least fish for bait | 0:32:38 | 0:32:41
but her technique is finally paying off. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:43
Woo-hoo! We have a snapper! | 0:32:43 | 0:32:46
Whoop-whoop! This one's for tea. | 0:32:46 | 0:32:48
Whilst Jo has found the depth that suits her, the boys' team | 0:32:49 | 0:32:53
are sticking to the deep waters where the locals are fishing. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:56
Ripon never manages to stay on his feet. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:02
James has moved up there a little because the waves seem to be a little less violent. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:06
I'm going to move up there with him. I wondered if you fancy joining us. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:10
Move the whole team up. It's pretty full-on here. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:13
15 minutes left and Jo is the only angler to have caught. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:26
I've got fish. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:29
Small, but perfectly formed. A little snapper. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
It's not massive but the way the locals fish | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
is purely for sustenance. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
I wouldn't personally take a fish that small but for them that's perfectly fair game. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:40
No! | 0:33:41 | 0:33:42 | |
-Five minutes to go! -Five minutes. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:46
A lucky bit of bait. Here goes nothing. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:49
Hey, this is a snook. | 0:33:53 | 0:33:55
This is a fish people actually come out here to catch. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:58
I'm stoked with that. That's a nice big fish, that is. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
Yay! | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03 | |
I've got a little snapper. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
Really hard work, to be honest. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:08
OK, fisher folk, lines out of the water! | 0:34:12 | 0:34:16
Come and dry your wellies out! | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
Battered. | 0:34:24 | 0:34:25
That was hard. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
To stand out here all day, every day, doing this for their dinner, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:31
fair play, I have got a lot of respect for them. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
-OK, Danny? -Nothing. -Nothing? It's hard, isn't it? -It was hard. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
-Well done, you got two. -Yeah, I'm quite pleased with that. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:40
Welcome back. How are you all feeling? | 0:34:56 | 0:34:58
-All right. Hanging in there. -Pretty tired. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:00
Finishing in the dark on a Costa Rican beach. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:03
We have to find out which one of you is the overall winner. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:06
James, would you like to show us how many fish you caught? | 0:35:06 | 0:35:10
-It's still in the sea, mate. -Still in the sea? None? -None. -Dan? | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
-I'm in the same boat as James. -No fish? -No fish. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
-Sam, what's in your bag? -One little snapper. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
-On to Ripon. -One little snapper. -One little snapper. | 0:35:19 | 0:35:23
-Jo? -I've got a very nice little snapper | 0:35:23 | 0:35:26
and I've got a lovely little snook. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:28
-Very nice. -I thought you were really gritty today. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:31
Your performance was head and shoulders above everyone else. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
Thank you. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:35
As you know, the winning team is that that has the greatest average weight. | 0:35:35 | 0:35:39
Sam's team, you had an average weight of 57 grams. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:44
Jo and Dan, you had an average weight of 285 grams. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:49
Well done, Joey. Thanks for digging me out of a hole there, love. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:53
Jo, you are today's winner. Well done. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
Well done, Joey. Good job. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:58
Last woman standing. It was a tough challenge today | 0:35:58 | 0:36:01
but I stuck with it and won the challenge. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
I am over the moon. Absolutely over the moon today. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:06
As they get the fire going, | 0:36:06 | 0:36:08
the Guaymi women prepare the anglers' catch. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:11
There's nothing like a fire on a beach after a long day. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:18
I think I recognise your fish there, Jo. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
This is a Costa Rican cookery lesson. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:33
I have experienced the highs and today is one of the lows. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:36
I have got to make sure I don't finish at the bottom tomorrow. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:40
-This place is amazing. This has been the best place so far. -Really? | 0:36:40 | 0:36:43
-By a mile. -It's like paradise, isn't it? It's just so rich. | 0:36:43 | 0:36:46
Anything that lives here thrives. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:48
You know, the wildlife, the fish, everything is just amazing. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:52
On their third day of fishing, | 0:37:05 | 0:37:08
the anglers face their greatest test of nerve - | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
fishing for one of the strongest and fastest fish in the ocean. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:14
I think it'll be billfish. You come all this way, you're not going to be | 0:37:14 | 0:37:18
fishing for something you can catch anywhere else. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
The problem is, sometimes you get one opportunity | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
and if you mess up... | 0:37:24 | 0:37:26
Yesterday, same for you, James, | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
-it was a major disappointment not to get one. -Yeah. | 0:37:30 | 0:37:32
Really nervous. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:34
Today, I'm feeling the pressure more than I have on any day for the whole | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
competition, just because of not catching anything yesterday. | 0:37:37 | 0:37:40
So the pressure's on today. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:43
My performance has been up and down. | 0:37:44 | 0:37:46
I need to land something that will keep me in the competition | 0:37:46 | 0:37:49
because at the moment I'm probably sitting quite near the bottom. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:52
Good morning. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:55
Today, for the final part of your Costa Rican adventure, | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
you are all after the big one. | 0:37:59 | 0:38:01
One of the fastest fish in the world. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
The sailfish. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:06
Get in! | 0:38:06 | 0:38:07
This really is one of the most revered fish in the oceans | 0:38:07 | 0:38:11
and you're going to be part of a unique conservation project that | 0:38:11 | 0:38:15
is ensuring that we understand more and protect this incredible fish. | 0:38:15 | 0:38:20
-Are you ready for it? -Yes. -Can't wait, mate. | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
The biggest sailfish wins. Go fish! | 0:38:22 | 0:38:26
Let's go. Sailfish, OK. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:28
-See you later. -Good luck. -Have a good one. -Good luck. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:39
Good luck. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:40
Hello. I'm good. How are you? I'm Jo. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
Let's go and get a big one. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
The anglers have just one day on the ocean using the most difficult | 0:38:45 | 0:38:49
technique yet. | 0:38:49 | 0:38:50
Super-sized fly fishing for oceanic game fish. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:54
Doing this is going to be the greatest experience of my life. | 0:38:56 | 0:39:00
There's people who fish for these fish all their lives | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
and don't catch them so catching one today is going to be like winning the lottery. | 0:39:03 | 0:39:06
Hopefully today, if we do catch a sailfish, we will tag it, | 0:39:06 | 0:39:10
which, to me, is really really exciting to be part of a conservation | 0:39:10 | 0:39:14
project for these really awesome fish, to preserve them. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:19
For the first time in their global expedition, the group leave | 0:39:19 | 0:39:23
the coast completely and head almost 20 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:28
The volcanic mountain range seen on land continues beneath the ocean. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:35
And is home to some of the most exciting game fish in the world. | 0:39:35 | 0:39:39
Sailfish are the fastest fish on the planet, capable of reaching | 0:39:41 | 0:39:44
speeds of up to 68mph. | 0:39:44 | 0:39:47
Their dorsal fin stretches the length of their body, | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51
stabilising them during acrobatic moves. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
They can hunt in groups, often shepherding prey | 0:39:55 | 0:39:58
with their sails into bait balls before swimming | 0:39:58 | 0:40:02
through the middle and stunning them with their bills. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:04
Sailfish is a member of the billfish family, it has that big long | 0:40:04 | 0:40:07
spike on the end of its nose along with swordfish and marlin. | 0:40:07 | 0:40:11
Marlin and swordfish are extremely strong. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:14
They are like bulls in terms of their aggression and power. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:17
The sailfish is more of a ballerina. It loves to dance. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:21
Sometimes it will make flat greyhounding-type jumps, other times | 0:40:21 | 0:40:26
it will just go up on its tail and perform beautiful pirouettes. | 0:40:26 | 0:40:30
So, from the angler's point of view, you have to react to the | 0:40:30 | 0:40:32
movement she makes. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:34
This is unlike anything I've ever done. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:37
Yeah, learning about the bait | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
and working together to attract the fish is quite interesting. | 0:40:39 | 0:40:44
For oceanic fly fishing, sailfish are attracted to the surface by | 0:40:44 | 0:40:48
lures called teasers which are trolled behind the boat to imitate fish. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:54
They have no hooks so if a sailfish shows interest, | 0:40:54 | 0:40:58
the teaser is quickly reeled in and a fly cast out to try and hook the fish. | 0:40:58 | 0:41:03
It is like something out of a horror movie, isn't it? | 0:41:04 | 0:41:07
These are used to tease the sailfish in so there are no hooks. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:11
If the fish goes for it, it will aggravate it, | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
it can't get hold of it, and then I cast and start popping | 0:41:13 | 0:41:17
and popping and the fish will turn, ignore those and take the fly. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:21
Can you show me the technique of how to cast fly? | 0:41:23 | 0:41:27
An accurate cast is crucial. They may only get one chance. | 0:41:27 | 0:41:32
-So, it is wise to spend time practising. -A little more, more. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:35
More power? | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
Despite being one of the most experienced fly-fishers left, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
Jo is keen to get to grips with the new equipment. | 0:41:40 | 0:41:43
I've never cast a rod quite that large so I had a couple | 0:41:43 | 0:41:46
of practices so I'm hoping I will be able to do it if the time comes. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:50
I am going to act like a fish is coming | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
and I want you to watch me very carefully. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:56
Ripon has the least experience fly-fishing. | 0:41:56 | 0:41:59
So, he is paying close attention to his guide. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:02
OK, watch. Pop, pop. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:04
He takes it, you set, when he's going to take it, as I stop, | 0:42:04 | 0:42:09
you stop popping. This, very critical. | 0:42:09 | 0:42:12
Pop, pop. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:15
The anglers are over halfway through the day | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
and they are feeling the pressure to use their time wisely. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:28
Change the lure again. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30
Bigger lure but it's going to swim differently, | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
this one has a concave mouth and this one has a slanted head here. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:36
Try to make more of a disturbance to entice the fish in. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:40
You can be waiting around for these fish for quite some time | 0:42:40 | 0:42:43
so it's best to keep chopping and changing. | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
When I think about bluewater fishing, | 0:42:45 | 0:42:47
I often think about long periods of nothing happening interspersed | 0:42:47 | 0:42:51
with short periods of adrenaline pumping moments. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:55
Unfortunately right now we are in an El Nino period. | 0:42:55 | 0:42:58
The water temperature's raised, the fish are lazier and lethargic. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:04
-You never know, it can change in a second. -And reel! | 0:43:04 | 0:43:08
OK, still coming, still coming. Get ready. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:11
Come on, baby. Come on. Get ready. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
Strip it down, strip it down. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:16
He is down there. Here, here. Cast! | 0:43:16 | 0:43:18
Right here. The short cast now! | 0:43:18 | 0:43:21
-Oh, he jumped in the back. -Sorry, I didn't even see it. | 0:43:24 | 0:43:28
Cast again, yes! | 0:43:28 | 0:43:29
Was that my mistake? | 0:43:31 | 0:43:34
No. He was not really hot, not really hungry. | 0:43:34 | 0:43:37
Do you think he will come back? | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
-OK, let him have it! -Set it. Set it. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
-And again. -Set it, set it! | 0:43:44 | 0:43:48
Aw! You're shaking. | 0:43:50 | 0:43:54
Yeah. What a way to fish, man. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
-He had it twice, I felt it. -I know. -I felt it but it didn't set. | 0:43:57 | 0:44:00
Set. Remember what we talked this morning. | 0:44:02 | 0:44:04
Set, you are setting with the rod, I want you to set with your hands. | 0:44:04 | 0:44:07
Set with my hand, right. I'll never live that one down. So annoying! | 0:44:07 | 0:44:11
They are out of time. And no-one has caught anything. | 0:44:13 | 0:44:16
We have certainly seen no action today. | 0:44:18 | 0:44:20
It's been a really fishless day. | 0:44:20 | 0:44:23
Very frustrating, waiting and waiting and waiting and no luck. | 0:44:23 | 0:44:27
As the disappointed anglers head back to shore, | 0:44:27 | 0:44:30
the judges have to make a decision. | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
We are out in this bountiful ocean and no sailfish. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:37
It was a tough day out there. They didn't get many chances. | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
That is why it's called fishing, not catching! Sometimes it is like this. | 0:44:40 | 0:44:45
I had one, right, ten foot from the boat, struck with the rod | 0:44:45 | 0:44:49
at the same time I did that and then I felt the bang and that was it. | 0:44:49 | 0:44:55
See you later, mate. | 0:44:55 | 0:44:56
-MATT: -Probably the best thing to do is give them a bit more time tomorrow. | 0:44:56 | 0:45:00
The only technical hitch, slightly selfish, I have to go. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:04
I will have to leave you guys to deal with the whole process on your own. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:08
-I think you're capable. -We will get by! | 0:45:08 | 0:45:10
OK, guys. This is it. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:26
The judges have given you one more chance, go, go, go. | 0:45:26 | 0:45:30
Go, guys. Go, come on. | 0:45:30 | 0:45:31
Catch a big one. Sorry I won't be here to see the end. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:34
We are going to catch some sailfish, yeah. Good man. | 0:45:34 | 0:45:38
OK, guys. You need to set sail now. You don't have very long to fish. | 0:45:38 | 0:45:43
-Cheers, Ben. -Bye, Ben. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
The anglers head back out onto the Pacific for one last chance to | 0:45:45 | 0:45:50
catch a sailfish. | 0:45:50 | 0:45:52
Today, they can use any method they like to catch any fish they like. | 0:45:54 | 0:45:58
The biggest fish still wins but they have just three hours to find it. | 0:45:58 | 0:46:04
That is a total of 11 rods. | 0:46:04 | 0:46:06
Ready, rigged, all the guns are out and blazing today! | 0:46:06 | 0:46:10
I am feeling a lot better than yesterday. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:12
We have four baits in the water with hooks. | 0:46:12 | 0:46:15
Teasers all over the place. | 0:46:15 | 0:46:17
It is like a Christmas tree, there's stuff going on all over the place! | 0:46:17 | 0:46:20
Conditions seem really different today. | 0:46:20 | 0:46:22
What do you think that means for their chances? | 0:46:22 | 0:46:24
The fish here, especially the sailfish, seem to be more | 0:46:24 | 0:46:27
active with a flat ocean and a clear sky. It is ideal. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:32
Dan, Ripon and James, they are in the danger zone. | 0:46:32 | 0:46:36
You could see it in their faces when they were leaving this morning. | 0:46:36 | 0:46:40
They all knew they had to have a big day. | 0:46:40 | 0:46:42
And in these waters that are teeming with life... | 0:46:42 | 0:46:45
-Fish jumping! -Fish coming this way! | 0:46:45 | 0:46:47
..the anglers are competing with something else. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:51
There's dolphins, dolphins, dolphins! | 0:46:51 | 0:46:53
Look, look! Fricking awesome! Dolphins everywhere. | 0:46:53 | 0:46:56
-Where there's dolphins, there's tuna. -Amazing, loads of them. Wow. | 0:46:56 | 0:47:00
Ha-ha-ha! | 0:47:00 | 0:47:03
What a sight, there's dolphins everywhere. Right at the boat. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:07
Ha-ha! Wow! | 0:47:07 | 0:47:09
They are right under the boat here. Amazing. | 0:47:11 | 0:47:14
Ha-ha! | 0:47:14 | 0:47:17
How cool is that?! | 0:47:17 | 0:47:20
Hopefully there's a pod of bait the dolphins are chasing | 0:47:20 | 0:47:23
and we are going to trawl through it and get a fish. | 0:47:23 | 0:47:26
Hopefully. | 0:47:26 | 0:47:27
Ha-ha! | 0:47:28 | 0:47:30
It's a turtle! Oh, man. That's so cool. | 0:47:30 | 0:47:34
Go on, son! Ha-ha! | 0:47:34 | 0:47:36
Man, that's awesome. | 0:47:36 | 0:47:38
Massive turtle. | 0:47:38 | 0:47:40
With so much resting on today, | 0:47:40 | 0:47:42
there's a lot of pressure to reach the ocean for clues. | 0:47:42 | 0:47:45
Cos there's no features on the surface for miles we | 0:47:45 | 0:47:48
have to keep our eyes on the horizon today for absolutely anything. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:52
There's a bit of floating... looks like half a tree. | 0:47:52 | 0:47:56
Any structure like that causes the habitat underneath. | 0:47:56 | 0:47:59
It's like its own ecosystem so what we are doing now is | 0:47:59 | 0:48:02
circling around it because there will be lots of bait fish | 0:48:02 | 0:48:06
underneath there because that's the only bit of shade they can get. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
But he's not the only one who's spotted it. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:12
It's amazing what a tiny piece of wood in a big ocean can do. | 0:48:12 | 0:48:16
Ripon is trolling with small lures. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:19
Nice bit of commotion. Ha-ha-hah! | 0:48:19 | 0:48:22
Whilst James is trying several techniques. | 0:48:22 | 0:48:25
This is the sporting side of us coming out. | 0:48:25 | 0:48:27
I've never caught any saltwater fish on a fly rod before, | 0:48:27 | 0:48:30
so I'm going to today. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:32
Ooh, yeah. | 0:48:32 | 0:48:34
Look at him, look. | 0:48:39 | 0:48:41
My first bonito. | 0:48:41 | 0:48:43
With no-one catching a big fish yet, Ripon and James are steaming ahead. | 0:48:43 | 0:48:47
That's a yellowfin tuna. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:49
It is just a tiny one but I'm getting him straight back in | 0:48:49 | 0:48:51
because I want to catch another one. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:53
Just seen James catching fish over there. It's not a good thing for me. | 0:48:53 | 0:48:57
I need to be beating him and Ripon today. | 0:48:57 | 0:48:59
-Another 50. -Fantastic. Amazing. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:06
-Whee! -I've lost count how many fish I've done now! | 0:49:07 | 0:49:11
Ha-ha-ha. Get in! It is a little bonito but on the fly rod. | 0:49:14 | 0:49:19
That's amazing. Fly fishing in Costa Rica. | 0:49:19 | 0:49:22
There's only an hour left and Jo has not seen any fish at all. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:41
It's a waiting game. | 0:49:41 | 0:49:42
Any minute now I keep expecting to see a sail pop | 0:49:42 | 0:49:45
up behind one of the lures. With fishing it can happen at any moment. | 0:49:45 | 0:49:48
Got to keep positive. | 0:49:48 | 0:49:50
All of a sudden it will be all hands on deck, heart beating, | 0:49:50 | 0:49:52
adrenaline pumping. | 0:49:52 | 0:49:55
Fish on! Fish on! | 0:49:56 | 0:49:59
Dorado, dorado! Yes! | 0:49:59 | 0:50:01
Look at that thing go. Oh, yes. | 0:50:01 | 0:50:03
That's what they are famous for. | 0:50:03 | 0:50:05
Beautiful fish, the colours on it. | 0:50:05 | 0:50:08
Hee-hee. | 0:50:08 | 0:50:10
In it comes. It is in the boat. | 0:50:10 | 0:50:13
Fantastic. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:15
There we go. Mahi-mahi. | 0:50:15 | 0:50:18
Hee-hee! Check that out! The dolphin fish, what a beautiful fish. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:22
What a beautiful specimen. | 0:50:22 | 0:50:24
-I am getting it back in the water straight away. -He is ready to go. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:27
Hee-hee! Releasing a special fish like that is just magical. | 0:50:27 | 0:50:32
So, we've got about 20 minutes left. Urgh! | 0:50:34 | 0:50:38
Where are the fish?! | 0:50:38 | 0:50:40
With time running out, | 0:50:40 | 0:50:42
the anglers are desperate to catch the biggest fish they can find. | 0:50:42 | 0:50:46
-There, what's that? -That is a killer whale. Dorsal fin. Three of them. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:51
Wow. Orcas. Amazing. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:53
Will there be any fish where the killer whales are? | 0:50:56 | 0:50:59
-No, they eat fish. -So, why are we going that way? | 0:50:59 | 0:51:03
It is getting busy out here. Maybe something is going to happen, man. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:07
Oh, yes, yes. We've got a sailfish on the surface. Oh, yes. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:15
Right here, look at the sailfish. | 0:51:15 | 0:51:16
It sails out of the water, beautiful creature. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:20
-I've never seen anything like it. -Whoa! Still there. Come here. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:25
Come on, come on. This way, this way, this way! | 0:51:26 | 0:51:29
Sam and Dan's boats quickly reposition. | 0:51:29 | 0:51:32
Each hoping the teasers at the back of their boat will draw | 0:51:32 | 0:51:35
the sailfish to them. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:36
-It's going to his boat. -Come on. Come on. Take a bait, take the bait. | 0:51:38 | 0:51:43
-Ha-ha! -Argh! | 0:51:43 | 0:51:45
He's just not interested. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
This place is nuts. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:52
-It's there, it's there. -There it goes. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:56
-I'm hooked into a sailfish. -Nice and easy, nice and easy, buddy. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:02
I am absolutely bricking it at this moment in time. | 0:52:07 | 0:52:10
If I lose this fish, I am going home. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:13
I am just, at the moment, I'm petrified. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:16
I'm petrified something is going to go wrong. There it is. Come on! | 0:52:16 | 0:52:20
Come on! | 0:52:20 | 0:52:22
I am just really, really scared at the moment | 0:52:22 | 0:52:23
that I am going to lose this fish. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25
Like nothing I've experienced in my life before. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:28
There's a lot at stake. | 0:52:28 | 0:52:30
Here comes the fish. Come on, baby. It's coming towards the boat. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:33
I'm over the moon, I just want to get in and see this fish! | 0:52:35 | 0:52:38
This is one of the greatest achievements of my life, | 0:52:43 | 0:52:45
catching this fish! | 0:52:45 | 0:52:47
After my kids and my wife, this is one of the greatest moments. | 0:52:47 | 0:52:52
192 centimetres. | 0:52:52 | 0:52:55
We are going to tag this fish, I am going to be able to look up | 0:52:55 | 0:52:57
online and see where my fish is in the world. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:00
The fish that I helped to tag, my bit of conservation. | 0:53:00 | 0:53:04
My best fishing moment by far! | 0:53:04 | 0:53:06
That is just mind-blowing. The power in that fish... | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
With ten minutes to go. | 0:53:18 | 0:53:20
I might as well forget playing the lottery from now on | 0:53:20 | 0:53:22
because I've just won the lottery, there. | 0:53:22 | 0:53:24
That was my winning ticket. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:27
We've got to go. Argh! | 0:53:43 | 0:53:45
That is it, game over. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:49
The judges discuss the anglers' performance with their guides. | 0:53:57 | 0:54:01
From the fly-fishing yesterday to all the techniques used today. | 0:54:01 | 0:54:06
Welcome back, what a difference 24 hours makes. | 0:54:13 | 0:54:17
So, if we kick off with you, James, can you tell us what you caught? | 0:54:17 | 0:54:21
I caught 12 bonitos, one tuna and five jacks. | 0:54:21 | 0:54:26
Five on the fly, a mixture of the lot. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:28
-I appreciate that you stuck with the fly so I congratulate you. -Cheers, Todd. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:33
-Jo? -Well, I caught a great big...nothing. | 0:54:33 | 0:54:37
-I know that's very disappointing but that happens in bill fishing. -Sam. | 0:54:37 | 0:54:42
I was fortunate enough to catch a beautiful dorado. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:44
Sam, you've got into a good habit of making the most of your chances. | 0:54:44 | 0:54:48
-Ripon. -14 bonitos, four amberjacks and two tunas. | 0:54:48 | 0:54:53
Yesterday, the stakes were so high | 0:54:53 | 0:54:56
-and then suddenly you get a hot sailfish. -UNCLEAR RESPONSE | 0:54:56 | 0:55:00
I have total sympathy for you, | 0:55:00 | 0:55:02
I know what the pressure is like but that's the game we are in. Dan? | 0:55:02 | 0:55:08
I had one bonito and one sailfish. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:12
I am over the moon. | 0:55:12 | 0:55:14
-I could never tell by looking at you! -I don't smile often. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:17
Dan, I think you've had an amazing day. | 0:55:17 | 0:55:20
You lived the dream. So, we have a winner today. Dan. | 0:55:20 | 0:55:24
APPLAUSE Danny boy! Get in. Cracking fish, mate. | 0:55:24 | 0:55:28
Well, everyone. | 0:55:28 | 0:55:30
We've got to think about your fishing early on with the roosterfish | 0:55:30 | 0:55:33
and the performance on the beach so this one is really going to be close to call. | 0:55:33 | 0:55:38
-Let's start with Sam, then. -Sam's got some good angling skills. | 0:55:45 | 0:55:48
I think he uses his head. | 0:55:48 | 0:55:50
If you look at his consistency, I think | 0:55:50 | 0:55:52
we can pretty much discount Sam. | 0:55:52 | 0:55:54
Jo had a decent day on the first day, | 0:55:54 | 0:55:56
she was right behind Sam with three roosters. | 0:55:56 | 0:55:58
I'll tell you what clinches it for me, | 0:55:58 | 0:56:00
-she went out on that beach and... -Took first. | 0:56:00 | 0:56:03
And I think there was a lot of pure fishing skill there. | 0:56:03 | 0:56:06
Dan scored some big points today with the sailfish. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:09
His big day today may have carried him over. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:12
So, Ripon. | 0:56:12 | 0:56:13
He goes out on the sailfish challenge, | 0:56:13 | 0:56:15
he had a chance to win it. He makes a mistake by not striking correctly, | 0:56:15 | 0:56:19
he raises the rod and then the same fish comes back round, | 0:56:19 | 0:56:23
gives him another chance and he did exactly the same thing again. | 0:56:23 | 0:56:27
Surprisingly, James is in the frame to go home. | 0:56:27 | 0:56:30
You've to give him points for the popper fishing. | 0:56:30 | 0:56:32
If we had been judging this yesterday, | 0:56:32 | 0:56:34
we would have had James, Ripon and Dan. | 0:56:34 | 0:56:37
Dan hauls himself out of it so it comes down to Ripon and James. | 0:56:37 | 0:56:42
What progress have they made as fishermen this week? It is | 0:56:42 | 0:56:46
-such a tough decision. -It is real, real close. | 0:56:46 | 0:56:48
Well, everyone, you've given myself and Todd a lot to think about. | 0:57:00 | 0:57:08
Had we been asked to make the decision yesterday, | 0:57:08 | 0:57:10
three of you would have been in danger of going home. | 0:57:10 | 0:57:15
James... | 0:57:15 | 0:57:16
..Ripon...and Dan. | 0:57:17 | 0:57:20
However, Dan, you pulled yourself out of trouble. | 0:57:20 | 0:57:25
So, the person going home is... | 0:57:25 | 0:57:28
..Ripon. Sorry. | 0:57:33 | 0:57:37
-The journey ends. -Sorry, Rip. -That's it. Journey ends. | 0:57:37 | 0:57:41
-It's been amazing though. -It has been a blast. -Some good memories, guys. | 0:57:42 | 0:57:48
It has broadened my horizon big-time. | 0:57:48 | 0:57:50
It has been absolutely amazing. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:52
I will miss you, mate. | 0:57:52 | 0:57:54
I am up because I am through to the next round | 0:57:54 | 0:57:57
but I've lost a best mate. It is hard. I'm trying not to cry! | 0:57:57 | 0:58:01
You need a bit of luck in this competition so hopefully that | 0:58:01 | 0:58:03
doesn't run out and carries on straight through to the final. | 0:58:03 | 0:58:06
Four weeks in, it gets better and better. | 0:58:06 | 0:58:08
We are going somewhere new next week. | 0:58:08 | 0:58:11
Next time, the anglers journey to Canada... | 0:58:11 | 0:58:14
Anything could be thrown at us this week. | 0:58:14 | 0:58:16
..where they will be dropped in at the deep end. | 0:58:16 | 0:58:18
It looks like you need a degree to use this thing here. | 0:58:18 | 0:58:21
And everything is super-sized. Even the fish. | 0:58:21 | 0:58:25
I think I've caught the Loch Ness monster! | 0:58:25 | 0:58:28 |
