The Earth's wildest rivers,

0:00:020:00:05

lakes...

0:00:050:00:06

..and oceans...

0:00:080:00:09

..are home to some incredible fish.

0:00:120:00:14

Yes. Hit it, hit it, hit it!

0:00:160:00:18

-The power is just unbelievable.

-Yes.

0:00:180:00:21

I think I've got Jaws on here!

0:00:210:00:23

Eight anglers embark on a global adventure...

0:00:230:00:26

This is just the most incredible place I think I've ever been.

0:00:260:00:30

..that will test them in every kind of water.

0:00:300:00:33

-I suppose this is what we call extreme coarse fishing.

-It really is.

0:00:330:00:37

They will compete in punishing weather...

0:00:370:00:40

Oh! This is getting dangerous.

0:00:410:00:43

..and extraordinary environments.

0:00:430:00:45

That is why I go fishing.

0:00:450:00:47

And face some of the toughest places to fish in the world.

0:00:470:00:50

We are going down here. I've got a pretty major leak in the boat.

0:00:500:00:54

They will be judged by international fishing expert, Matt Hayes,

0:00:540:00:58

and by fishermen from all over the planet,

0:00:580:01:01

who will decide which of them stays on to the next location.

0:01:010:01:04

I'm quite conscious I think I'm the only one that hasn't had a hook up.

0:01:040:01:08

Last time, the anglers fished the white water

0:01:080:01:12

of the widest rapids in the world.

0:01:120:01:14

I've never ever fished anything like this in my life. It's ridiculous.

0:01:140:01:19

And got to know the Mekong River better than they expected.

0:01:190:01:23

Oh, I'm in.

0:01:230:01:25

Jo and Dan stood out.

0:01:250:01:27

That fish instinct that I've got is working well again.

0:01:280:01:31

But the extreme heat...

0:01:310:01:33

..proved too much for Emma.

0:01:340:01:36

Absolutely wilting. I feel faint.

0:01:360:01:38

And sadly, she left the expedition.

0:01:380:01:41

Good innings, girl.

0:01:410:01:43

This time, there is no shortage of fish...

0:01:430:01:47

I've lost count how many fish I've had now.

0:01:470:01:49

..as the remaining five anglers...

0:01:490:01:51

Heads up, Joey!

0:01:510:01:52

..explore the Pacific coast...

0:01:520:01:54

Wow!

0:01:540:01:55

..of Costa Rica.

0:01:550:01:57

Doing this is going to be the greatest experience of my life.

0:01:570:02:00

A land of rainforest, volcanoes and oceans.

0:02:130:02:17

Costa Rica is home to a greater density of species

0:02:190:02:21

than anywhere else on the planet.

0:02:210:02:23

A quarter of the country is made up of protected forests and reserves.

0:02:280:02:32

So the jungles hum with life.

0:02:320:02:35

But the land is not what the anglers are here for.

0:02:360:02:39

Bordered by both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean,

0:02:420:02:46

the seas are teeming with fish.

0:02:460:02:48

There is no better arena than Costa Rica.

0:02:480:02:51

They have been protecting the fish here for decades

0:02:510:02:54

and it's really paid off.

0:02:540:02:56

We're talking here about some of the biggest fish in the ocean.

0:02:560:02:59

People have got to start to perform. They are going to get chances.

0:02:590:03:02

The question is, will they take them?

0:03:020:03:05

That was absolutely crazy. I have been in bigger cars than that!

0:03:050:03:08

What an experience. What a way to come to Costa Rica.

0:03:080:03:11

Matt will be judging alongside local expert Todd Staley,

0:03:110:03:15

named Sportsman of the Year for his work on conservation in Costa Rica.

0:03:150:03:20

Costa Rica is probably one of the best places in the world to fish.

0:03:200:03:24

Just being on the water is like being in a different world.

0:03:240:03:28

These fish are real adrenaline pushers.

0:03:280:03:30

They are going to make you shake.

0:03:300:03:32

Don't fall in with the crocodile, Pete!

0:03:320:03:34

There are ants everywhere. On the board, in the trees.

0:03:340:03:37

There is a monkey up there.

0:03:370:03:39

So much wildlife. Vultures everywhere, lizards.

0:03:390:03:42

It is a really beautiful place.

0:03:420:03:44

I'm a country bumpkin from Wales. I'm used to seeing cows and sheep.

0:03:440:03:48

If there's as much fish in the water as there is animals in the jungle,

0:03:480:03:52

then we are in for an epic week.

0:03:520:03:54

This week, I think potentially the fishing could be off the charts.

0:03:540:03:57

I'm hoping so.

0:03:570:03:59

This week in Costa Rica is all about speed and the anglers will have

0:04:020:04:07

to learn quickly to catch some of the most extraordinary fish in the ocean.

0:04:070:04:11

Welcome to Costa Rica.

0:04:110:04:13

This is one of the most extraordinary habitats

0:04:130:04:17

and it translates to "rich coast".

0:04:170:04:19

As the name suggests, these waters are teeming with fish.

0:04:190:04:23

For the first part of your Costa Rican expedition,

0:04:230:04:26

you're going to be going after the world-famous roosterfish.

0:04:260:04:30

It's an inshore species.

0:04:310:04:33

It's only found in the eastern tropical Pacific.

0:04:330:04:36

They grow up to over 100 pounds. They are a very powerful fish.

0:04:360:04:40

Sometimes they will take to the air when you hook them. Sometimes they will run.

0:04:400:04:44

You are going to have a choice between trolling with dead baits

0:04:440:04:48

and using spinning equipment.

0:04:480:04:50

How you actually deploy that equipment is going to be up to you.

0:04:500:04:53

We are looking for the angler who catches the greatest combined length of roosterfish.

0:04:530:04:58

So the more you catch and the bigger fish,

0:04:580:05:00

the more likely you are to win this challenge.

0:05:000:05:03

Good luck. Go fish!

0:05:030:05:05

-Thank you.

-Cheers, guys.

0:05:050:05:07

Rooster fish action, guys. Very nice too.

0:05:070:05:10

With the help of local guides,

0:05:170:05:19

the anglers will have five hours fishing inshore

0:05:190:05:22

to catch as many rooster fish as they can.

0:05:220:05:25

See you at the other side, mate. All the best.

0:05:260:05:29

Although they will be fishing side by side,

0:05:290:05:31

they will be competing against each other.

0:05:310:05:34

-Tight lines, guys.

-Have a good one.

0:05:340:05:37

Costa Rica in Central America.

0:05:410:05:43

The Osa Peninsula on the Pacific coast is where lush rainforest

0:05:430:05:47

meets the ocean in the most biodiverse region of the country.

0:05:470:05:52

The anglers' first test will be fishing from boats close to the shore

0:05:520:05:55

where the volcanic ridge provides rocky reefs

0:05:550:05:59

just beneath the water surface,

0:05:590:06:01

creating the perfect habitat for a huge variety of fish,

0:06:010:06:05

including the rock star of the ocean, the rooster fish.

0:06:050:06:09

Rooster fish have a striking appearance,

0:06:100:06:13

with stripes along their body and a massive collapsible dorsal fin.

0:06:130:06:17

They hunt in packs,

0:06:170:06:19

looking for schools of bait fish not far off the beach.

0:06:190:06:22

The rooster fish is one of the fishes that has been

0:06:220:06:24

top of my bucket list for a long, long time, so I'm pretty excited.

0:06:240:06:28

I'm going to be like a kid in a sweet shop all day today.

0:06:280:06:31

-This looks like a good spot.

-Yes. It looks fishy, doesn't it?

0:06:310:06:34

-Look at that!

-Let's go. Let's get some bait out.

-Come on, rooster.

0:06:340:06:38

IMPERSONATES A ROOSTER

0:06:380:06:40

As the anglers start fishing,

0:06:420:06:44

they have a choice of two techniques - popping and trolling.

0:06:440:06:47

This spot looks pretty good.

0:06:470:06:49

We've got the rainforest dropping right down onto the beach.

0:06:490:06:53

There is a reef here. We're going to be trolling along the edge of the reef so perfect rooster territory.

0:06:530:06:58

Trolling is a technique which uses lures or baits.

0:06:580:07:01

These are dragged at a constant speed behind a boat either at or

0:07:020:07:07

just beneath the surface, provoking attacks from predatory fish.

0:07:070:07:10

When a fish takes the bait,

0:07:120:07:14

it's up to the angler to set the hook at exactly the right time.

0:07:140:07:17

We are going to bounce dead sardines on the surface

0:07:190:07:21

but because it's moving, you have to give it time to eat.

0:07:210:07:25

So if you are too quick you are going to lose it.

0:07:250:07:27

It's all about quick reaction and timing.

0:07:270:07:30

When you get a take, the line will take off and let the fish run.

0:07:300:07:33

You have to wait five to six seconds and then switch it on,

0:07:330:07:37

tension and set into it.

0:07:370:07:39

Because it gives the fish time to get the bait in its mouth.

0:07:390:07:41

If you set too soon it might just have the tail end,

0:07:410:07:44

whereas you give it time to get hold of the whole fish.

0:07:440:07:46

There we go. He hit it.

0:07:470:07:49

Something just touched the bait.

0:07:490:07:51

Something keeps hitting the bait,

0:07:540:07:56

but it's not actually taking them down properly.

0:07:560:07:59

Another drop take. We're just going to bring this in and check the bait.

0:07:590:08:03

The fish are grabbing them and then letting go.

0:08:030:08:05

They're not swimming away with them, which is what we need them to do.

0:08:050:08:09

Have you seen the state of that?

0:08:090:08:11

We're going to do a bit of lure fishing.

0:08:110:08:12

With a lure you get better action and it looks more alive.

0:08:120:08:15

It's got a bib on the front so it will do that behind the boat.

0:08:150:08:18

That won't get damaged. It's just a different technique to what we are using there.

0:08:180:08:22

Trolling with dead bait or lures

0:08:220:08:25

is attracting some interest from the fish.

0:08:250:08:27

But it isn't the anglers' only option.

0:08:270:08:30

So we've got two rods at the back, trolling.

0:08:300:08:32

One with a deep diving lure

0:08:320:08:34

and one with a dead bait on which is trolling along the top

0:08:340:08:37

and then we'll do some popping off the front here.

0:08:370:08:40

So we're covering all bases, really.

0:08:400:08:42

My goodness, I feel like a drunk person, stumbling around everywhere.

0:08:420:08:46

Jo looks like she's popping off the front of the boat.

0:08:460:08:48

Popping uses a lure with a concave face

0:08:480:08:51

to create the maximum commotion on the surface.

0:08:510:08:54

But instead of being dragged behind the boat,

0:08:540:08:57

it's cast with a lighter spinning rod

0:08:570:08:59

and retrieved quickly in a jerky motion to imitate a small fish.

0:08:590:09:04

So the popper makes lots of commotion,

0:09:040:09:06

the fish comes up, grabs it and I catch my rooster.

0:09:060:09:09

-Exactly.

-Simple.

-Rooster fish like it fast.

0:09:090:09:11

They are smart and if it's moving too slow they will figure out it's not real and they won't eat it.

0:09:110:09:16

It's more exciting, popping. It's active.

0:09:160:09:19

I don't know what to do, whether to give it a bit of time and then once you've caught a fish, try popping.

0:09:190:09:23

There's a lot to keep an eye on.

0:09:230:09:25

Are our anglers more likely to catch something on the popper or the dead sardines?

0:09:250:09:29

-Nothing is written in stone in fishing.

-Which is why you double up.

0:09:290:09:33

-I might give it a go with the popping.

-Be careful, James.

0:09:330:09:36

-Your cast is good. Your retrieve is too slow.

-Too slow?

0:09:380:09:42

Can they actually reel in the popper too fast?

0:09:420:09:44

For these fish, I don't think they can. I guess if you were Superman you probably could!

0:09:440:09:48

The key is to try and keep tension

0:09:480:09:51

and just create as much disturbance as possible on top of the water.

0:09:510:09:55

It's dangerous this, mind.

0:09:550:09:57

-Is that a fish? Fish on.

-We've seen a fish. Is it on?

0:09:570:10:00

It's not. The hook must have got caught and it created tension

0:10:020:10:05

against the water when you were dragging it.

0:10:050:10:07

Who do you think is going to excel in this task?

0:10:240:10:26

I think Sam has got the most relevant experience.

0:10:260:10:30

He's done more world travelling,

0:10:300:10:32

he's probably dealt with fish like this before.

0:10:320:10:34

Dan's going to have the kind of general feel for the water,

0:10:340:10:37

he learns very quickly.

0:10:370:10:38

Jo's really tenacious, she has those zonal moments

0:10:380:10:42

where she really concentrates and then you see her come out fighting.

0:10:420:10:45

James is really good with technique,

0:10:450:10:47

I can see him casting the poppers and working them well.

0:10:470:10:50

Ripon, well, he might struggle a little bit.

0:10:500:10:52

This will be so new to him, and there's so much to take in.

0:10:520:10:56

But who knows?

0:10:560:10:57

Oh! Here we go! Here we go!

0:10:570:11:00

Yeah, we're in, we're in, we're in, we're in.

0:11:000:11:02

We got something on here.

0:11:020:11:04

After just an hour on the water...

0:11:040:11:06

Oh, this is some fish.

0:11:060:11:07

..Costa Rica lives up to its reputation.

0:11:070:11:10

You got one, mate?

0:11:100:11:12

Got a fish on, mate?

0:11:120:11:13

If it's a rooster it's going to be a pretty good-sized one.

0:11:130:11:16

-Look at that thing.

-What is it, a Spanish mackerel?

-Mackerel, yeah.

0:11:160:11:20

-It's not a rooster.

-It's not a rooster.

0:11:200:11:22

A jack from the Pacific of Costa Rica.

0:11:220:11:25

Releasing it nose-first gets the oxygen flowing through their gills.

0:11:250:11:29

OK, fish on!

0:11:290:11:31

Ooh!

0:11:310:11:33

Oh!

0:11:330:11:35

It's gone. Shame.

0:11:350:11:37

Bye, jack!

0:11:370:11:39

Fish on!

0:11:390:11:40

Hey, James has got one on now.

0:11:400:11:42

-Are you in, James?

-Yeah.

0:11:420:11:45

The fish are coming thick and fast.

0:11:450:11:47

What is it? Oh, a massive needlefish.

0:11:470:11:49

But still no sign of the roosterfish.

0:11:490:11:52

Look at the size...!

0:11:520:11:54

That's the most amazing fish I've ever seen.

0:11:540:11:56

-What a fish!

-Yeah! One each.

0:11:560:11:59

Everyone except Jo has caught a fish.

0:12:030:12:07

Just not the right kind.

0:12:070:12:09

We're getting hit by these small jacks.

0:12:090:12:11

We're not coming into touch with roosters.

0:12:110:12:13

The captain reckons he knows another spot where we might do better.

0:12:130:12:17

Roosterfish patrol the coastal areas,

0:12:170:12:20

seeking out river mouths and submerged rocks

0:12:200:12:23

in their hunt for food.

0:12:230:12:24

Their distinctive dorsal fin stands up on end

0:12:240:12:28

as they speed after their prey.

0:12:280:12:30

-This expedition is all about speed.

-Yeah.

0:12:300:12:33

They're totally streamlined, and when they're swimming,

0:12:330:12:36

quite often they fold back their fins so there are no projections.

0:12:360:12:40

It's a little bit like a cyclist, you know -

0:12:400:12:42

the high speed thing where everything is smooth.

0:12:420:12:45

Every fish has its own personality,

0:12:450:12:46

and these roosterfish, they're real powerful fish.

0:12:460:12:49

Even the little guys are powerful.

0:12:490:12:51

You have to work the fish to the boat,

0:12:510:12:53

and the fish is going to see the boat

0:12:530:12:54

and he's going to say "Adios!" and take off again.

0:12:540:12:57

We're off, we're off, we're off, we're off, we're off.

0:12:570:12:59

Yeah, got him.

0:13:010:13:03

What is it?

0:13:030:13:05

He's off!

0:13:050:13:06

Oh, he's on the surface.

0:13:080:13:09

-Oh! What have we got?

-Rooster?

0:13:090:13:12

Did look like a rooster to me.

0:13:120:13:14

Look at that run! Oh, yes. We got a rooster.

0:13:140:13:17

They don't half pull some.

0:13:170:13:20

Beautiful. What a fish. Woohoo!

0:13:200:13:23

Don't they hang on?!

0:13:230:13:24

He's in the boat.

0:13:240:13:26

That...is what we came here for.

0:13:260:13:29

The roosterfish. Look at the dorsal on it.

0:13:290:13:32

What a beautiful fish.

0:13:320:13:33

Straight down. I'm over the moon.

0:13:330:13:35

Chuffed to bits. Muchas gracias!

0:13:350:13:38

Good move.

0:13:380:13:39

Sam's the first angler to catch the target species.

0:13:390:13:42

And the others change tack, too.

0:13:420:13:44

There's a load of frigatebirds circling in a certain area.

0:13:440:13:47

The birds eat sardines, which is what the roosterfish feed on.

0:13:470:13:51

So where there's birds, there's fish.

0:13:510:13:52

Where there's fish, there's hopefully roosterfish.

0:13:520:13:55

That is it, back!

0:13:590:14:02

You got it.

0:14:020:14:04

Roosterfish!

0:14:040:14:05

Get in.

0:14:050:14:06

James took a fish as well.

0:14:060:14:08

Do you think that's because we suddenly went over a school?

0:14:080:14:11

We came into this patch of clean water.

0:14:110:14:13

Colour change is one of the things that often brings fish together,

0:14:130:14:16

and that's what we've got going right here.

0:14:160:14:18

-You've got a fish on!

-Rooster?

-Yes!

-Rooster!

0:14:180:14:22

Oh, look at him!

0:14:220:14:23

Probably the best-looking fish I've ever seen in my life.

0:14:230:14:26

I'm over the moon.

0:14:260:14:28

You got a bite!

0:14:280:14:29

Oh!

0:14:290:14:31

OK, buddy, you're OK.

0:14:310:14:33

Woo! That was amazing!

0:14:330:14:35

Yeah!

0:14:350:14:36

Get in! They don't half run, them roosterfish.

0:14:360:14:39

It's like a completely different power.

0:14:390:14:41

Yeah. Aah!

0:14:410:14:42

Oh!

0:14:420:14:43

Look at me! I'm a mess!

0:14:430:14:45

I can't believe the others got just about everything - needlefish,

0:14:510:14:55

roosterfish, jacks.

0:14:550:14:58

We haven't got anything.

0:14:580:14:59

Come on, fishies!

0:14:590:15:01

Rooster!

0:15:010:15:03

-Roo-ooster!

-There we go.

0:15:030:15:05

We're on, we're on, we're on.

0:15:050:15:06

-Can you see what that is?

-I think it's another little rooster.

0:15:060:15:10

Nice. He's doing all right.

0:15:100:15:11

Rooster number two!

0:15:110:15:13

Sam and Jo take the lead,

0:15:130:15:15

whilst Dan still has none.

0:15:150:15:17

Thanks, buddy, off you go.

0:15:170:15:19

Roosters often travel in schools,

0:15:190:15:21

so the faster the anglers can retrieve their lure

0:15:210:15:23

and cast it again, the more chance they have of catching.

0:15:230:15:27

There we go. It's another rooster, another rooster.

0:15:270:15:30

Here he comes.

0:15:300:15:31

-Another rooster!

-Aww...

0:15:310:15:33

Roosterfish! Hee hee hee!

0:15:330:15:35

Yes, rooster three.

0:15:350:15:37

Yes! Look!

0:15:380:15:40

Ladies and gentlemen, we're fishing!

0:15:400:15:43

So Dan's the only one that hasn't caught roosters now,

0:15:430:15:46

which, if you know anything about his personality, Todd,

0:15:460:15:49

he's slightly grumpier than you!

0:15:490:15:51

So he's not going to be happy, man, I tell you.

0:15:510:15:53

I do get stubborn when it comes to fishing.

0:15:530:15:56

I have thrown the odd tantrum when things haven't gone my way.

0:15:560:15:59

I am not a very good loser at all.

0:15:590:16:02

I do get very grumpy if I'm not winning.

0:16:020:16:04

Even at home, fishing can make or break Dan's mood.

0:16:040:16:08

Family comes first with Dan.

0:16:080:16:11

But he does love his fishing,

0:16:110:16:13

and without his fishing, he's a grumpy Dan.

0:16:130:16:15

When Dan's grumpy, you'll know. You can see the frown in his eyebrows,

0:16:150:16:18

you can see by his face. Doesn't even have to open his mouth.

0:16:180:16:21

All of a sudden, Jo's gone on a monster run.

0:16:230:16:25

Fair play for her. Personally, I want to catch some fish.

0:16:250:16:28

I changed my lure, I saw the lure she used,

0:16:280:16:31

just having a bash and see what happens.

0:16:310:16:33

Time is running out to catch as many roosterfish as possible.

0:16:370:16:42

He's on, he's on!

0:16:440:16:45

Wahey! We're off again! Number four.

0:16:450:16:48

He might not be winning on numbers,

0:16:480:16:51

but James is keen to impress with his technique.

0:16:510:16:54

Trying to keep your balance and do this at the same time,

0:16:540:16:57

and not get taken... I can't even speak! Just worn out.

0:16:570:17:00

Oh, God, you had a bite!

0:17:030:17:05

Dan finally gets his chance.

0:17:050:17:06

Roosterfish!

0:17:060:17:09

Giving me a great battle. Giving me a great, great battle.

0:17:090:17:13

Fish on!

0:17:130:17:15

Yes, come on!

0:17:150:17:16

Got to keep the line tight.

0:17:160:17:18

Come on! Get in!

0:17:220:17:25

Get in. Yes!

0:17:250:17:26

I was getting worried, then. I didn't think today

0:17:260:17:28

was going to be my day. But my coil reached the fish.

0:17:280:17:31

And I'm so, so happy.

0:17:310:17:32

I'm determined to get one on this.

0:17:320:17:35

Sometimes you just get that fish you need.

0:17:350:17:37

I'm on!

0:17:390:17:41

I'm on. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:17:410:17:42

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:17:420:17:44

Oi, oi, we're off! Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:17:460:17:48

Nice.

0:17:510:17:52

The hook didn't pull.

0:17:520:17:53

Completely different feeling on this rod. It's so light.

0:17:570:18:00

And hopefully, it's a roosterfish.

0:18:000:18:03

What is that? Is it a bonito?

0:18:030:18:05

Ah!

0:18:050:18:07

OK?

0:18:070:18:08

I'm actually glad it wasn't any bigger, because

0:18:120:18:14

that was a hell of a fight.

0:18:140:18:15

On the popper!

0:18:150:18:17

Whoo! Oh!

0:18:170:18:18

Wow!

0:18:200:18:21

I got one popping. That was all I wanted to do.

0:18:260:18:29

Wasn't a roosterfish, but just glad I stuck at it.

0:18:290:18:31

If this is anything to go by, I can't wait for the rest of the week.

0:18:310:18:34

Ripon finishes the challenge with one,

0:18:340:18:37

James and Dan two,

0:18:370:18:39

Jo three

0:18:390:18:40

and Sam four.

0:18:400:18:41

But the winner will be the angler with the longest total length.

0:18:410:18:45

What a difference a week makes.

0:18:530:18:54

Had a positive storm of fish today.

0:18:540:18:56

All of you have caught something or other.

0:18:560:18:59

Todd, do you want to give some feedback

0:18:590:19:01

on how you think Dan did? He obviously caught the sun!

0:19:010:19:04

Now, the first time I went past you today,

0:19:040:19:07

you looked bored, you looked frustrated.

0:19:070:19:10

You were definitely more preoccupied with what Jo was catching.

0:19:100:19:14

We know how grumpy you can be, but you did get your act together.

0:19:140:19:17

You caught a couple of roosterfish so it was a great recovery.

0:19:170:19:21

On to James now.

0:19:210:19:22

What impressed me was, you chose probably the most difficult

0:19:220:19:25

type of fishing, is throwing the popper

0:19:250:19:27

and you stuck with it for a long time and you made it successful.

0:19:270:19:31

You caught several different species of fish,

0:19:310:19:34

used the popper well. You did OK.

0:19:340:19:36

How did Jo get on?

0:19:360:19:37

You were throwing the popper. You were working it hard.

0:19:370:19:40

You did actually get quite a lot of chances.

0:19:400:19:42

You converted a number of them

0:19:420:19:44

and ended up with a very good tally of fish.

0:19:440:19:47

Sam, I believe, caught four roosters.

0:19:470:19:49

I was a little disappointed that you didn't use the popper more.

0:19:490:19:52

I think it was a mistake not to try it, but,

0:19:520:19:54

with such a good tally of fish, it was a strong performance.

0:19:540:19:57

-Ripon, it looks like you've been hugging roosters.

-We had a moment.

0:19:570:20:01

The statistics don't lie. You didn't catch a lot of roosterfish.

0:20:010:20:05

But generally, with the equipment, you looked comfortable.

0:20:050:20:07

You played the fish well.

0:20:070:20:09

Well, they say size isn't everything, but in this case,

0:20:090:20:11

we were looking for total length of the roosterfish.

0:20:110:20:14

Ripon, you sadly came last.

0:20:140:20:16

James, you came fourth.

0:20:160:20:18

In any other week, you really could have won this.

0:20:180:20:20

You got such a variety of species.

0:20:200:20:22

Sadly, you didn't today.

0:20:220:20:24

So the overall winner with a total length of 252cm

0:20:240:20:29

goes to...

0:20:290:20:30

..Sam! Very good.

0:20:320:20:34

Sam, your prize for winning today

0:20:360:20:38

is that you get to choose your team for tomorrow.

0:20:380:20:41

-Cheers, guys.

-See you in the morning.

0:20:410:20:44

Goodbye.

0:20:440:20:46

-Ah-ha-ha! Muchas gracias, senor!

-Mucho gusto!

0:20:530:20:56

Good day fishing.

0:20:560:20:57

Come out on top, so pretty chuffed with today.

0:20:570:21:00

I knew myself that this morning wasn't good enough.

0:21:000:21:02

And I got a lot better.

0:21:020:21:03

So, yeah, justified comments.

0:21:030:21:06

Coming bottom is never nice,

0:21:060:21:07

but it's obviously put me behind, so the next two,

0:21:070:21:11

I've really got to smash them.

0:21:110:21:12

Looking forward to tomorrow.

0:21:120:21:13

Get a good night's sleep tonight. Someone's got to go,

0:21:130:21:16

and it's getting harder because everyone's good.

0:21:160:21:18

Ah, fantastic!

0:21:180:21:20

Pura vida! Pura vida!

0:21:200:21:22

For their second test, the anglers will be staying on the same

0:21:310:21:34

stretch of coastline, but this time, they'll be on land.

0:21:340:21:38

The Osa Peninsula forms one side of the Golfo Dulce,

0:21:380:21:41

and it's through the mouth of the gulf that vast numbers

0:21:410:21:45

of fish migrate, sheltering in the jagged, volcanic reefs.

0:21:450:21:50

The Guaymi are the earliest inhabitants of the Osa Peninsula,

0:21:500:21:54

and fish here the traditional way.

0:21:540:21:57

Whilst commercial netting has been banned,

0:21:570:21:59

the Guaymi are allowed to use nets for subsistence fishing.

0:21:590:22:02

Behind us is the Golfo Dulce, which means "sweet gulf".

0:22:070:22:12

This is a rich habitat for all sorts of marine life.

0:22:120:22:15

In my hand, I have a cast net that you will all remember from Laos.

0:22:150:22:20

And the yo-yo, also known as a hand line, that you all used in Cuba.

0:22:200:22:25

You're going to fish like the local people today.

0:22:250:22:27

It's subsistence living.

0:22:270:22:29

They're allowed to use nets to catch their bait.

0:22:290:22:31

And then, they generally fish with hand lines.

0:22:310:22:33

You will use the bait that you catch to try to catch some fish to eat.

0:22:330:22:37

The further you can cast with the hand line,

0:22:370:22:40

the better chances you have of a nice fish, and the secret

0:22:400:22:44

to that is getting the momentum, like a lasso, and turning it loose.

0:22:440:22:48

You're going to be judged on what you catch with your hand line,

0:22:480:22:53

but, of course, if you don't catch some bait first,

0:22:530:22:56

then that's not going to really be very effective.

0:22:560:22:58

So remember those skills that you learned in Cuba and Laos

0:22:580:23:02

and get them into action very quickly.

0:23:020:23:03

Sam, you won yesterday.

0:23:030:23:05

As your prize, you win your choice of team.

0:23:050:23:09

Based on Cuba and the hand lining skills,

0:23:090:23:12

I'd like to choose James and Ripon to be in my team today.

0:23:120:23:14

OK, first off, you need to go and get your cast nets to catch your bait.

0:23:140:23:19

-Go fish!

-Cheers, guys. See you later.

0:23:190:23:21

I think Jo and Dan are quite a formidable team, actually.

0:23:220:23:25

I'm not so sure that was the wisest choice. I would have picked Jo.

0:23:250:23:29

What have we got here?

0:23:290:23:30

Ooh, look at these.

0:23:300:23:32

Going to be a different style to what we did in Laos.

0:23:320:23:34

Interesting, the little drawstring, parcel.

0:23:340:23:36

How hard is this?

0:23:370:23:39

For someone that's grown up with a rod and reel in their hand,

0:23:390:23:42

it's very difficult.

0:23:420:23:44

The idea here is that the anglers get to use some of the skills

0:23:440:23:47

they've already acquired.

0:23:470:23:48

In Cuba, they learned how to use traditional hand lines.

0:23:480:23:52

In Laos, they learned how to use cast nets.

0:23:520:23:54

In this particular challenge,

0:23:540:23:56

they'll use the throw net to catch some bait and then use

0:23:560:23:59

it as dead bait on hand lines, hopefully to catch bigger fish.

0:23:590:24:03

So it's going to test the skills that, hopefully, they've retained.

0:24:030:24:08

Yeah, technique is to hold the net at the top, like that,

0:24:090:24:12

get a weight, make it look like a bit of a skirt.

0:24:120:24:15

Not going to wear them, and try to make a circular movement.

0:24:150:24:19

And it doesn't land quite right!

0:24:190:24:22

The hardest thing about these type of nets is getting the spread

0:24:220:24:25

because what you don't want to do is launch a net out,

0:24:250:24:30

it land like a like an absolute bullet through the water,

0:24:300:24:32

scares all the fish and then you've got to move to another area.

0:24:320:24:35

Pretty happy with that. Hopefully, we're going to catch ourselves

0:24:350:24:38

some bait because if we don't get any bait, we're in trouble, really.

0:24:380:24:41

Throw that.

0:24:410:24:42

Wonderful!

0:24:430:24:45

It's a different technique to the one we used in Laos,

0:24:450:24:48

but it's the same idea - perfect circle is what we're after.

0:24:480:24:52

-Whilst Jo is quick to learn these new skills...

-Hey!

0:24:520:24:55

-..Dan, the traditional netsman, is a little slower to adapt.

-Ah!

0:24:550:25:00

Nice and smooth, Dan, don't force it.

0:25:000:25:03

-This is judges back-seat driving now.

-Yeah.

0:25:030:25:06

I think he feels the pressure

0:25:060:25:07

because he's obviously the nets man, so he feels like

0:25:070:25:09

he should be automatic straightaway and that's not the case, is it?

0:25:090:25:12

It's completely different to what he does. But he'll get there.

0:25:120:25:16

Close but no cigar.

0:25:160:25:18

All right.

0:25:180:25:19

Having practised their casting, it's time to take the plunge.

0:25:190:25:23

-We're ready to go.

-When you look at the surf behind us,

0:25:230:25:26

it seems impossible that there are fish anywhere near all of that.

0:25:260:25:29

You need to try and get it out a little bit further than where

0:25:290:25:32

the wave's breaking and then, of course,

0:25:320:25:34

it's going to move with the current

0:25:340:25:36

and once it moves so far, you've got to bring it in and do it again.

0:25:360:25:40

The thing about this kind of rough surf is that predatory fish

0:25:400:25:43

look for an advantage.

0:25:430:25:45

They're always looking to beat up on the small fish, so when the water's

0:25:450:25:48

a little bit coloured and stirred up

0:25:480:25:50

and when the bait fish are getting thrown around a little bit,

0:25:500:25:53

that's when the predatory fish,

0:25:530:25:54

with their superior eyesight and speed, have got the advantage.

0:25:540:25:58

Oh.

0:25:580:26:00

SHE YELPS

0:26:020:26:03

SHE LAUGHS

0:26:250:26:27

The conditions are shocking!

0:26:300:26:32

In a way, it's good fun but there's a little danger element.

0:26:320:26:35

You've just got to have your wits about you

0:26:350:26:37

and keep an eye on the waves.

0:26:370:26:38

You can see the locals there with their nets.

0:26:380:26:40

They're not going to give up because of the conditions. If these guys can do it, surely we can.

0:26:400:26:44

It's pretty rocky out there. I'm like a wounded soldier now.

0:26:440:26:47

It takes a lot to faze me. It's only a wave, it's only a cut.

0:26:470:26:50

Distance is going to be the key.

0:26:510:26:53

Obviously, the net's got to land open

0:26:530:26:55

but you've got to get beyond that surf

0:26:550:26:57

and, in Laos, they were fishing from boats,

0:26:570:26:59

so the fish are underneath them.

0:26:590:27:01

Here, they're going to be away from them, so they've got to be able

0:27:010:27:04

to throw the net open and at distance.

0:27:040:27:06

Heads up, Joey, heads up, Joey.

0:27:060:27:08

Finally managing to work with the waves,

0:27:080:27:10

the anglers have just 30 minutes to catch the bait fish they need.

0:27:100:27:14

With the throw nets,

0:27:140:27:15

I don't think anybody could catch in these conditions.

0:27:150:27:19

I've got a fish!

0:27:190:27:20

-I tell a lie!

-I've got a bloody fish! I got a fish.

0:27:200:27:24

-That is an absolute whopper.

-Yes. Whoa!

-There you go.

0:27:260:27:30

You got any yet, Rip?

0:27:300:27:31

-They're there.

-Look at that for a haul.

0:27:310:27:34

-Whoa! 14.

-I've got loads of fish.

0:27:340:27:37

That was a good shot, look at that.

0:27:370:27:39

I have a fish!

0:27:390:27:40

It's one of the tiniest fish in the world.

0:27:400:27:42

A tiny, tiny fish. Right, back out there.

0:27:420:27:45

Even at home, Jo has a determined streak.

0:27:470:27:50

I am quite a competitive person,

0:27:500:27:52

I don't like to be made to look like I'm a wuss.

0:27:520:27:54

So if there's an instance where, you know,

0:27:540:27:57

there's something that I'm a little nervous about doing,

0:27:570:27:59

if everyone else is doing it, then I have to do it too.

0:27:590:28:02

Oh, oh, oh! I've got two.

0:28:020:28:05

I'm coming round to your patch.

0:28:050:28:06

James has had a few, I don't think Ripon's had any, bless him.

0:28:060:28:09

I did have one in the net but it just slipped out. Just really small.

0:28:090:28:14

Can't believe you have to go through all this just to get the bait.

0:28:150:28:18

Fish.

0:28:180:28:19

And Dan finally gets one in the net.

0:28:210:28:23

Oh, come on!

0:28:230:28:25

Got another fish.

0:28:250:28:27

There, my friend, is a little bit of bait.

0:28:270:28:32

That's only half the job, isn't it?

0:28:320:28:34

We've got to go and catch the big fish now.

0:28:340:28:36

OK, everyone, that is time for you to all come in.

0:28:370:28:41

That's my meagre little catch.

0:28:460:28:48

Yeah, it'd look a bit bad

0:28:480:28:50

if the nets man didn't catch anything

0:28:500:28:52

while we were doing a challenge.

0:28:520:28:53

-Where's your bait?

-Oh, no, I didn't catch any.

0:28:530:28:56

That's all right. We're sharing all these, anyway, mate,

0:28:560:28:58

so it doesn't matter. We're all in this together.

0:28:580:29:00

Beautiful, ain't they? Well done, boys.

0:29:000:29:02

So 36-6. This team is the winner in terms of the bait fish.

0:29:100:29:14

Go out there and try and get those bigger fish, guys.

0:29:140:29:18

The anglers will have to use the bait they've caught to catch

0:29:180:29:21

the bigger fish by hand line.

0:29:210:29:23

The team with the heaviest haul wins.

0:29:230:29:26

I've seen hand lines used from a boat,

0:29:270:29:30

you just lower it down the back.

0:29:300:29:31

How do you use one from the beach, though?

0:29:310:29:34

It's kind of like lassoing a steer, you've got to get it going

0:29:340:29:37

and whip it out.

0:29:370:29:39

The weight and bait at the end of the hand line are thrown out

0:29:390:29:43

using a lasso action to reach as far as possible.

0:29:430:29:46

More line should then be spooled out from the yo-yo,

0:29:460:29:49

allowing the current

0:29:490:29:51

to take the bait to the predatory fish lying just beyond the surf.

0:29:510:29:55

It's obviously the right time to be fishing because the locals

0:29:550:29:58

are out there now. The pelicans are diving out there too.

0:29:580:30:01

The good thing is that the pelicans are starting to work the water now,

0:30:010:30:05

bombing into the schools of bait fish.

0:30:050:30:07

The pelicans start working, the other fish come in for the buffet.

0:30:070:30:10

Right, yeah, we're ready.

0:30:100:30:12

-Come on, you little ripper.

-Here we go.

0:30:120:30:14

Watch out, James!

0:30:150:30:17

Surely they're going to have to be out quite deep in that water

0:30:170:30:20

with the big surf all around them.

0:30:200:30:22

When they're throwing, they're off balance, and the wave hits them

0:30:220:30:25

but when you're fishing, you can time the wave break,

0:30:250:30:28

throw over it and then back away from it, spooling more line out.

0:30:280:30:32

If you look at the local guys fishing, they're very adept

0:30:320:30:35

at dodging between the waves - they can read the water really well.

0:30:350:30:38

This is a very fast learning curve.

0:30:380:30:40

We said we'd push them, we said we'd challenge them,

0:30:400:30:43

we've certainly done that.

0:30:430:30:45

I know the locals are here so obviously there's fish here.

0:30:450:30:48

I'm going to stay here where they're catching fish.

0:30:480:30:50

Our feet are buried.

0:30:500:30:52

Yeah, feet slowly get buried, I've got boots full of gravel,

0:30:520:30:56

you've got to fight the surf every time,

0:30:560:30:58

your bait's rolling around everywhere so you've got to...

0:30:580:31:01

-Face-fulls of water.

-Face-fulls of salt water as well.

0:31:020:31:05

-This doesn't happen when you're coarse fishing.

-No.

0:31:050:31:08

I'm sitting in my nice little chair, minding my own business.

0:31:090:31:12

Ripon lives with his family in Bedfordshire.

0:31:140:31:17

He learned to fish with his two brothers.

0:31:170:31:20

Fishing means everything to Ripon. When he sleeps, he dreams about it.

0:31:200:31:24

He's woken me up before and said,

0:31:240:31:26

"Raju, give me the reel, give me the reel!"

0:31:260:31:28

Stuff like that.

0:31:280:31:29

Yeah, it's his life, pretty much, at the moment.

0:31:290:31:33

Fishing is a massive part of my life.

0:31:340:31:37

Even on Christmas or anything like that, birthdays, I go fishing.

0:31:370:31:41

Sometimes, my lunch breaks, I pop down for a quick half an hour

0:31:410:31:44

to see what I can pluck out - come back to work stinking of fish.

0:31:440:31:47

All right, Joey?

0:31:550:31:57

-I'm going further out again.

-I can't go out that far.

-Fair enough.

0:31:580:32:01

-Jo, how are you doing?

-Struggling with the waves a bit.

0:32:010:32:04

I need to be taller.

0:32:040:32:06

I think I need to be a bit heavier to deal with the waves.

0:32:060:32:08

They totally beat me.

0:32:080:32:10

So you take some line off for this?

0:32:100:32:12

-Like that, you see?

-Timing, isn't it?

-It is all about timing.

0:32:120:32:15

Jo's action, start to finish, is really smooth.

0:32:150:32:18

Yeah, she's pure technique and she's got it.

0:32:180:32:21

Jo! Is that the first time you've been doing this?

0:32:210:32:24

Yeah, this kind of hand line, definitely.

0:32:240:32:26

Just an hour left of daylight.

0:32:350:32:37

Jo might have caught the least fish for bait

0:32:380:32:41

but her technique is finally paying off.

0:32:410:32:43

Woo-hoo! We have a snapper!

0:32:430:32:46

Whoop-whoop! This one's for tea.

0:32:460:32:48

Whilst Jo has found the depth that suits her, the boys' team

0:32:490:32:53

are sticking to the deep waters where the locals are fishing.

0:32:530:32:56

Ripon never manages to stay on his feet.

0:32:590:33:02

James has moved up there a little because the waves seem to be a little less violent.

0:33:020:33:06

I'm going to move up there with him. I wondered if you fancy joining us.

0:33:060:33:10

Move the whole team up. It's pretty full-on here.

0:33:100:33:13

15 minutes left and Jo is the only angler to have caught.

0:33:210:33:26

I've got fish.

0:33:280:33:29

Small, but perfectly formed. A little snapper.

0:33:290:33:32

It's not massive but the way the locals fish

0:33:320:33:34

is purely for sustenance.

0:33:340:33:36

I wouldn't personally take a fish that small but for them that's perfectly fair game.

0:33:360:33:40

No!

0:33:410:33:42

-Five minutes to go!

-Five minutes.

0:33:430:33:46

A lucky bit of bait. Here goes nothing.

0:33:460:33:49

Hey, this is a snook.

0:33:530:33:55

This is a fish people actually come out here to catch.

0:33:550:33:58

I'm stoked with that. That's a nice big fish, that is.

0:33:580:34:01

Yay!

0:34:010:34:03

I've got a little snapper.

0:34:040:34:06

Really hard work, to be honest.

0:34:060:34:08

OK, fisher folk, lines out of the water!

0:34:120:34:16

Come and dry your wellies out!

0:34:190:34:21

Battered.

0:34:240:34:25

That was hard.

0:34:250:34:27

To stand out here all day, every day, doing this for their dinner,

0:34:270:34:31

fair play, I have got a lot of respect for them.

0:34:310:34:33

-OK, Danny?

-Nothing.

-Nothing? It's hard, isn't it?

-It was hard.

0:34:330:34:36

-Well done, you got two.

-Yeah, I'm quite pleased with that.

0:34:360:34:40

Welcome back. How are you all feeling?

0:34:560:34:58

-All right. Hanging in there.

-Pretty tired.

0:34:580:35:00

Finishing in the dark on a Costa Rican beach.

0:35:000:35:03

We have to find out which one of you is the overall winner.

0:35:030:35:06

James, would you like to show us how many fish you caught?

0:35:060:35:10

-It's still in the sea, mate.

-Still in the sea? None?

-None.

-Dan?

0:35:100:35:13

-I'm in the same boat as James.

-No fish?

-No fish.

0:35:130:35:16

-Sam, what's in your bag?

-One little snapper.

0:35:160:35:19

-On to Ripon.

-One little snapper.

-One little snapper.

0:35:190:35:23

-Jo?

-I've got a very nice little snapper

0:35:230:35:26

and I've got a lovely little snook.

0:35:260:35:28

-Very nice.

-I thought you were really gritty today.

0:35:280:35:31

Your performance was head and shoulders above everyone else.

0:35:310:35:34

Thank you.

0:35:340:35:35

As you know, the winning team is that that has the greatest average weight.

0:35:350:35:39

Sam's team, you had an average weight of 57 grams.

0:35:390:35:44

Jo and Dan, you had an average weight of 285 grams.

0:35:440:35:49

Well done, Joey. Thanks for digging me out of a hole there, love.

0:35:490:35:53

Jo, you are today's winner. Well done.

0:35:530:35:56

Well done, Joey. Good job.

0:35:560:35:58

Last woman standing. It was a tough challenge today

0:35:580:36:01

but I stuck with it and won the challenge.

0:36:010:36:03

I am over the moon. Absolutely over the moon today.

0:36:030:36:06

As they get the fire going,

0:36:060:36:08

the Guaymi women prepare the anglers' catch.

0:36:080:36:11

There's nothing like a fire on a beach after a long day.

0:36:140:36:18

I think I recognise your fish there, Jo.

0:36:270:36:30

This is a Costa Rican cookery lesson.

0:36:310:36:33

I have experienced the highs and today is one of the lows.

0:36:330:36:36

I have got to make sure I don't finish at the bottom tomorrow.

0:36:360:36:40

-This place is amazing. This has been the best place so far.

-Really?

0:36:400:36:43

-By a mile.

-It's like paradise, isn't it? It's just so rich.

0:36:430:36:46

Anything that lives here thrives.

0:36:460:36:48

You know, the wildlife, the fish, everything is just amazing.

0:36:480:36:52

On their third day of fishing,

0:37:050:37:08

the anglers face their greatest test of nerve -

0:37:080:37:11

fishing for one of the strongest and fastest fish in the ocean.

0:37:110:37:14

I think it'll be billfish. You come all this way, you're not going to be

0:37:140:37:18

fishing for something you can catch anywhere else.

0:37:180:37:21

The problem is, sometimes you get one opportunity

0:37:210:37:24

and if you mess up...

0:37:240:37:26

Yesterday, same for you, James,

0:37:270:37:30

-it was a major disappointment not to get one.

-Yeah.

0:37:300:37:32

Really nervous.

0:37:320:37:34

Today, I'm feeling the pressure more than I have on any day for the whole

0:37:340:37:37

competition, just because of not catching anything yesterday.

0:37:370:37:40

So the pressure's on today.

0:37:400:37:43

My performance has been up and down.

0:37:440:37:46

I need to land something that will keep me in the competition

0:37:460:37:49

because at the moment I'm probably sitting quite near the bottom.

0:37:490:37:52

Good morning.

0:37:540:37:55

Today, for the final part of your Costa Rican adventure,

0:37:550:37:59

you are all after the big one.

0:37:590:38:01

One of the fastest fish in the world.

0:38:010:38:04

The sailfish.

0:38:040:38:06

Get in!

0:38:060:38:07

This really is one of the most revered fish in the oceans

0:38:070:38:11

and you're going to be part of a unique conservation project that

0:38:110:38:15

is ensuring that we understand more and protect this incredible fish.

0:38:150:38:20

-Are you ready for it?

-Yes.

-Can't wait, mate.

0:38:200:38:22

The biggest sailfish wins. Go fish!

0:38:220:38:26

Let's go. Sailfish, OK.

0:38:260:38:28

-See you later.

-Good luck.

-Have a good one.

-Good luck.

0:38:350:38:39

Good luck.

0:38:390:38:40

Hello. I'm good. How are you? I'm Jo.

0:38:400:38:43

Let's go and get a big one.

0:38:430:38:45

The anglers have just one day on the ocean using the most difficult

0:38:450:38:49

technique yet.

0:38:490:38:50

Super-sized fly fishing for oceanic game fish.

0:38:500:38:54

Doing this is going to be the greatest experience of my life.

0:38:560:39:00

There's people who fish for these fish all their lives

0:39:000:39:03

and don't catch them so catching one today is going to be like winning the lottery.

0:39:030:39:06

Hopefully today, if we do catch a sailfish, we will tag it,

0:39:060:39:10

which, to me, is really really exciting to be part of a conservation

0:39:100:39:14

project for these really awesome fish, to preserve them.

0:39:140:39:19

For the first time in their global expedition, the group leave

0:39:190:39:23

the coast completely and head almost 20 miles out into the Pacific Ocean.

0:39:230:39:28

The volcanic mountain range seen on land continues beneath the ocean.

0:39:290:39:35

And is home to some of the most exciting game fish in the world.

0:39:350:39:39

Sailfish are the fastest fish on the planet, capable of reaching

0:39:410:39:44

speeds of up to 68mph.

0:39:440:39:47

Their dorsal fin stretches the length of their body,

0:39:490:39:51

stabilising them during acrobatic moves.

0:39:510:39:54

They can hunt in groups, often shepherding prey

0:39:550:39:58

with their sails into bait balls before swimming

0:39:580:40:02

through the middle and stunning them with their bills.

0:40:020:40:04

Sailfish is a member of the billfish family, it has that big long

0:40:040:40:07

spike on the end of its nose along with swordfish and marlin.

0:40:070:40:11

Marlin and swordfish are extremely strong.

0:40:110:40:14

They are like bulls in terms of their aggression and power.

0:40:140:40:17

The sailfish is more of a ballerina. It loves to dance.

0:40:170:40:21

Sometimes it will make flat greyhounding-type jumps, other times

0:40:210:40:26

it will just go up on its tail and perform beautiful pirouettes.

0:40:260:40:30

So, from the angler's point of view, you have to react to the

0:40:300:40:32

movement she makes.

0:40:320:40:34

This is unlike anything I've ever done.

0:40:340:40:37

Yeah, learning about the bait

0:40:370:40:39

and working together to attract the fish is quite interesting.

0:40:390:40:44

For oceanic fly fishing, sailfish are attracted to the surface by

0:40:440:40:48

lures called teasers which are trolled behind the boat to imitate fish.

0:40:480:40:54

They have no hooks so if a sailfish shows interest,

0:40:540:40:58

the teaser is quickly reeled in and a fly cast out to try and hook the fish.

0:40:580:41:03

It is like something out of a horror movie, isn't it?

0:41:040:41:07

These are used to tease the sailfish in so there are no hooks.

0:41:070:41:11

If the fish goes for it, it will aggravate it,

0:41:110:41:13

it can't get hold of it, and then I cast and start popping

0:41:130:41:17

and popping and the fish will turn, ignore those and take the fly.

0:41:170:41:21

Can you show me the technique of how to cast fly?

0:41:230:41:27

An accurate cast is crucial. They may only get one chance.

0:41:270:41:32

-So, it is wise to spend time practising.

-A little more, more.

0:41:320:41:35

More power?

0:41:350:41:37

Despite being one of the most experienced fly-fishers left,

0:41:370:41:40

Jo is keen to get to grips with the new equipment.

0:41:400:41:43

I've never cast a rod quite that large so I had a couple

0:41:430:41:46

of practices so I'm hoping I will be able to do it if the time comes.

0:41:460:41:50

I am going to act like a fish is coming

0:41:500:41:53

and I want you to watch me very carefully.

0:41:530:41:56

Ripon has the least experience fly-fishing.

0:41:560:41:59

So, he is paying close attention to his guide.

0:41:590:42:02

OK, watch. Pop, pop.

0:42:020:42:04

He takes it, you set, when he's going to take it, as I stop,

0:42:040:42:09

you stop popping. This, very critical.

0:42:090:42:12

Pop, pop.

0:42:120:42:15

The anglers are over halfway through the day

0:42:210:42:24

and they are feeling the pressure to use their time wisely.

0:42:240:42:28

Change the lure again.

0:42:280:42:30

Bigger lure but it's going to swim differently,

0:42:300:42:32

this one has a concave mouth and this one has a slanted head here.

0:42:320:42:36

Try to make more of a disturbance to entice the fish in.

0:42:360:42:40

You can be waiting around for these fish for quite some time

0:42:400:42:43

so it's best to keep chopping and changing.

0:42:430:42:45

When I think about bluewater fishing,

0:42:450:42:47

I often think about long periods of nothing happening interspersed

0:42:470:42:51

with short periods of adrenaline pumping moments.

0:42:510:42:55

Unfortunately right now we are in an El Nino period.

0:42:550:42:58

The water temperature's raised, the fish are lazier and lethargic.

0:42:580:43:04

-You never know, it can change in a second.

-And reel!

0:43:040:43:08

OK, still coming, still coming. Get ready.

0:43:080:43:11

Come on, baby. Come on. Get ready.

0:43:110:43:14

Strip it down, strip it down.

0:43:140:43:16

He is down there. Here, here. Cast!

0:43:160:43:18

Right here. The short cast now!

0:43:180:43:21

-Oh, he jumped in the back.

-Sorry, I didn't even see it.

0:43:240:43:28

Cast again, yes!

0:43:280:43:29

Was that my mistake?

0:43:310:43:34

No. He was not really hot, not really hungry.

0:43:340:43:37

Do you think he will come back?

0:43:370:43:40

-OK, let him have it!

-Set it. Set it.

0:43:400:43:43

-And again.

-Set it, set it!

0:43:440:43:48

Aw! You're shaking.

0:43:500:43:54

Yeah. What a way to fish, man.

0:43:540:43:57

-He had it twice, I felt it.

-I know.

-I felt it but it didn't set.

0:43:570:44:00

Set. Remember what we talked this morning.

0:44:020:44:04

Set, you are setting with the rod, I want you to set with your hands.

0:44:040:44:07

Set with my hand, right. I'll never live that one down. So annoying!

0:44:070:44:11

They are out of time. And no-one has caught anything.

0:44:130:44:16

We have certainly seen no action today.

0:44:180:44:20

It's been a really fishless day.

0:44:200:44:23

Very frustrating, waiting and waiting and waiting and no luck.

0:44:230:44:27

As the disappointed anglers head back to shore,

0:44:270:44:30

the judges have to make a decision.

0:44:300:44:33

We are out in this bountiful ocean and no sailfish.

0:44:330:44:37

It was a tough day out there. They didn't get many chances.

0:44:370:44:40

That is why it's called fishing, not catching! Sometimes it is like this.

0:44:400:44:45

I had one, right, ten foot from the boat, struck with the rod

0:44:450:44:49

at the same time I did that and then I felt the bang and that was it.

0:44:490:44:55

See you later, mate.

0:44:550:44:56

-MATT:

-Probably the best thing to do is give them a bit more time tomorrow.

0:44:560:45:00

The only technical hitch, slightly selfish, I have to go.

0:45:000:45:04

I will have to leave you guys to deal with the whole process on your own.

0:45:040:45:08

-I think you're capable.

-We will get by!

0:45:080:45:10

OK, guys. This is it.

0:45:240:45:26

The judges have given you one more chance, go, go, go.

0:45:260:45:30

Go, guys. Go, come on.

0:45:300:45:31

Catch a big one. Sorry I won't be here to see the end.

0:45:310:45:34

We are going to catch some sailfish, yeah. Good man.

0:45:340:45:38

OK, guys. You need to set sail now. You don't have very long to fish.

0:45:380:45:43

-Cheers, Ben.

-Bye, Ben.

0:45:430:45:45

The anglers head back out onto the Pacific for one last chance to

0:45:450:45:50

catch a sailfish.

0:45:500:45:52

Today, they can use any method they like to catch any fish they like.

0:45:540:45:58

The biggest fish still wins but they have just three hours to find it.

0:45:580:46:04

That is a total of 11 rods.

0:46:040:46:06

Ready, rigged, all the guns are out and blazing today!

0:46:060:46:10

I am feeling a lot better than yesterday.

0:46:100:46:12

We have four baits in the water with hooks.

0:46:120:46:15

Teasers all over the place.

0:46:150:46:17

It is like a Christmas tree, there's stuff going on all over the place!

0:46:170:46:20

Conditions seem really different today.

0:46:200:46:22

What do you think that means for their chances?

0:46:220:46:24

The fish here, especially the sailfish, seem to be more

0:46:240:46:27

active with a flat ocean and a clear sky. It is ideal.

0:46:270:46:32

Dan, Ripon and James, they are in the danger zone.

0:46:320:46:36

You could see it in their faces when they were leaving this morning.

0:46:360:46:40

They all knew they had to have a big day.

0:46:400:46:42

And in these waters that are teeming with life...

0:46:420:46:45

-Fish jumping!

-Fish coming this way!

0:46:450:46:47

..the anglers are competing with something else.

0:46:470:46:51

There's dolphins, dolphins, dolphins!

0:46:510:46:53

Look, look! Fricking awesome! Dolphins everywhere.

0:46:530:46:56

-Where there's dolphins, there's tuna.

-Amazing, loads of them. Wow.

0:46:560:47:00

Ha-ha-ha!

0:47:000:47:03

What a sight, there's dolphins everywhere. Right at the boat.

0:47:030:47:07

Ha-ha! Wow!

0:47:070:47:09

They are right under the boat here. Amazing.

0:47:110:47:14

Ha-ha!

0:47:140:47:17

How cool is that?!

0:47:170:47:20

Hopefully there's a pod of bait the dolphins are chasing

0:47:200:47:23

and we are going to trawl through it and get a fish.

0:47:230:47:26

Hopefully.

0:47:260:47:27

Ha-ha!

0:47:280:47:30

It's a turtle! Oh, man. That's so cool.

0:47:300:47:34

Go on, son! Ha-ha!

0:47:340:47:36

Man, that's awesome.

0:47:360:47:38

Massive turtle.

0:47:380:47:40

With so much resting on today,

0:47:400:47:42

there's a lot of pressure to reach the ocean for clues.

0:47:420:47:45

Cos there's no features on the surface for miles we

0:47:450:47:48

have to keep our eyes on the horizon today for absolutely anything.

0:47:480:47:52

There's a bit of floating... looks like half a tree.

0:47:520:47:56

Any structure like that causes the habitat underneath.

0:47:560:47:59

It's like its own ecosystem so what we are doing now is

0:47:590:48:02

circling around it because there will be lots of bait fish

0:48:020:48:06

underneath there because that's the only bit of shade they can get.

0:48:060:48:10

But he's not the only one who's spotted it.

0:48:100:48:12

It's amazing what a tiny piece of wood in a big ocean can do.

0:48:120:48:16

Ripon is trolling with small lures.

0:48:160:48:19

Nice bit of commotion. Ha-ha-hah!

0:48:190:48:22

Whilst James is trying several techniques.

0:48:220:48:25

This is the sporting side of us coming out.

0:48:250:48:27

I've never caught any saltwater fish on a fly rod before,

0:48:270:48:30

so I'm going to today.

0:48:300:48:32

Ooh, yeah.

0:48:320:48:34

Look at him, look.

0:48:390:48:41

My first bonito.

0:48:410:48:43

With no-one catching a big fish yet, Ripon and James are steaming ahead.

0:48:430:48:47

That's a yellowfin tuna.

0:48:470:48:49

It is just a tiny one but I'm getting him straight back in

0:48:490:48:51

because I want to catch another one.

0:48:510:48:53

Just seen James catching fish over there. It's not a good thing for me.

0:48:530:48:57

I need to be beating him and Ripon today.

0:48:570:48:59

-Another 50.

-Fantastic. Amazing.

0:49:030:49:06

-Whee!

-I've lost count how many fish I've done now!

0:49:070:49:11

Ha-ha-ha. Get in! It is a little bonito but on the fly rod.

0:49:140:49:19

That's amazing. Fly fishing in Costa Rica.

0:49:190:49:22

There's only an hour left and Jo has not seen any fish at all.

0:49:360:49:41

It's a waiting game.

0:49:410:49:42

Any minute now I keep expecting to see a sail pop

0:49:420:49:45

up behind one of the lures. With fishing it can happen at any moment.

0:49:450:49:48

Got to keep positive.

0:49:480:49:50

All of a sudden it will be all hands on deck, heart beating,

0:49:500:49:52

adrenaline pumping.

0:49:520:49:55

Fish on! Fish on!

0:49:560:49:59

Dorado, dorado! Yes!

0:49:590:50:01

Look at that thing go. Oh, yes.

0:50:010:50:03

That's what they are famous for.

0:50:030:50:05

Beautiful fish, the colours on it.

0:50:050:50:08

Hee-hee.

0:50:080:50:10

In it comes. It is in the boat.

0:50:100:50:13

Fantastic.

0:50:130:50:15

There we go. Mahi-mahi.

0:50:150:50:18

Hee-hee! Check that out! The dolphin fish, what a beautiful fish.

0:50:180:50:22

What a beautiful specimen.

0:50:220:50:24

-I am getting it back in the water straight away.

-He is ready to go.

0:50:240:50:27

Hee-hee! Releasing a special fish like that is just magical.

0:50:270:50:32

So, we've got about 20 minutes left. Urgh!

0:50:340:50:38

Where are the fish?!

0:50:380:50:40

With time running out,

0:50:400:50:42

the anglers are desperate to catch the biggest fish they can find.

0:50:420:50:46

-There, what's that?

-That is a killer whale. Dorsal fin. Three of them.

0:50:460:50:51

Wow. Orcas. Amazing.

0:50:510:50:53

Will there be any fish where the killer whales are?

0:50:560:50:59

-No, they eat fish.

-So, why are we going that way?

0:50:590:51:03

It is getting busy out here. Maybe something is going to happen, man.

0:51:030:51:07

Oh, yes, yes. We've got a sailfish on the surface. Oh, yes.

0:51:110:51:15

Right here, look at the sailfish.

0:51:150:51:16

It sails out of the water, beautiful creature.

0:51:160:51:20

-I've never seen anything like it.

-Whoa! Still there. Come here.

0:51:200:51:25

Come on, come on. This way, this way, this way!

0:51:260:51:29

Sam and Dan's boats quickly reposition.

0:51:290:51:32

Each hoping the teasers at the back of their boat will draw

0:51:320:51:35

the sailfish to them.

0:51:350:51:36

-It's going to his boat.

-Come on. Come on. Take a bait, take the bait.

0:51:380:51:43

-Ha-ha!

-Argh!

0:51:430:51:45

He's just not interested.

0:51:470:51:50

This place is nuts.

0:51:500:51:52

-It's there, it's there.

-There it goes.

0:51:520:51:56

-I'm hooked into a sailfish.

-Nice and easy, nice and easy, buddy.

0:51:580:52:02

I am absolutely bricking it at this moment in time.

0:52:070:52:10

If I lose this fish, I am going home.

0:52:100:52:13

I am just, at the moment, I'm petrified.

0:52:130:52:16

I'm petrified something is going to go wrong. There it is. Come on!

0:52:160:52:20

Come on!

0:52:200:52:22

I am just really, really scared at the moment

0:52:220:52:23

that I am going to lose this fish.

0:52:230:52:25

Like nothing I've experienced in my life before.

0:52:250:52:28

There's a lot at stake.

0:52:280:52:30

Here comes the fish. Come on, baby. It's coming towards the boat.

0:52:300:52:33

I'm over the moon, I just want to get in and see this fish!

0:52:350:52:38

This is one of the greatest achievements of my life,

0:52:430:52:45

catching this fish!

0:52:450:52:47

After my kids and my wife, this is one of the greatest moments.

0:52:470:52:52

192 centimetres.

0:52:520:52:55

We are going to tag this fish, I am going to be able to look up

0:52:550:52:57

online and see where my fish is in the world.

0:52:570:53:00

The fish that I helped to tag, my bit of conservation.

0:53:000:53:04

My best fishing moment by far!

0:53:040:53:06

That is just mind-blowing. The power in that fish...

0:53:110:53:14

With ten minutes to go.

0:53:180:53:20

I might as well forget playing the lottery from now on

0:53:200:53:22

because I've just won the lottery, there.

0:53:220:53:24

That was my winning ticket.

0:53:240:53:27

We've got to go. Argh!

0:53:430:53:45

That is it, game over.

0:53:470:53:49

The judges discuss the anglers' performance with their guides.

0:53:570:54:01

From the fly-fishing yesterday to all the techniques used today.

0:54:010:54:06

Welcome back, what a difference 24 hours makes.

0:54:130:54:17

So, if we kick off with you, James, can you tell us what you caught?

0:54:170:54:21

I caught 12 bonitos, one tuna and five jacks.

0:54:210:54:26

Five on the fly, a mixture of the lot.

0:54:260:54:28

-I appreciate that you stuck with the fly so I congratulate you.

-Cheers, Todd.

0:54:280:54:33

-Jo?

-Well, I caught a great big...nothing.

0:54:330:54:37

-I know that's very disappointing but that happens in bill fishing.

-Sam.

0:54:370:54:42

I was fortunate enough to catch a beautiful dorado.

0:54:420:54:44

Sam, you've got into a good habit of making the most of your chances.

0:54:440:54:48

-Ripon.

-14 bonitos, four amberjacks and two tunas.

0:54:480:54:53

Yesterday, the stakes were so high

0:54:530:54:56

-and then suddenly you get a hot sailfish.

-UNCLEAR RESPONSE

0:54:560:55:00

I have total sympathy for you,

0:55:000:55:02

I know what the pressure is like but that's the game we are in. Dan?

0:55:020:55:08

I had one bonito and one sailfish.

0:55:080:55:12

I am over the moon.

0:55:120:55:14

-I could never tell by looking at you!

-I don't smile often.

0:55:140:55:17

Dan, I think you've had an amazing day.

0:55:170:55:20

You lived the dream. So, we have a winner today. Dan.

0:55:200:55:24

APPLAUSE Danny boy! Get in. Cracking fish, mate.

0:55:240:55:28

Well, everyone.

0:55:280:55:30

We've got to think about your fishing early on with the roosterfish

0:55:300:55:33

and the performance on the beach so this one is really going to be close to call.

0:55:330:55:38

-Let's start with Sam, then.

-Sam's got some good angling skills.

0:55:450:55:48

I think he uses his head.

0:55:480:55:50

If you look at his consistency, I think

0:55:500:55:52

we can pretty much discount Sam.

0:55:520:55:54

Jo had a decent day on the first day,

0:55:540:55:56

she was right behind Sam with three roosters.

0:55:560:55:58

I'll tell you what clinches it for me,

0:55:580:56:00

-she went out on that beach and...

-Took first.

0:56:000:56:03

And I think there was a lot of pure fishing skill there.

0:56:030:56:06

Dan scored some big points today with the sailfish.

0:56:060:56:09

His big day today may have carried him over.

0:56:090:56:12

So, Ripon.

0:56:120:56:13

He goes out on the sailfish challenge,

0:56:130:56:15

he had a chance to win it. He makes a mistake by not striking correctly,

0:56:150:56:19

he raises the rod and then the same fish comes back round,

0:56:190:56:23

gives him another chance and he did exactly the same thing again.

0:56:230:56:27

Surprisingly, James is in the frame to go home.

0:56:270:56:30

You've to give him points for the popper fishing.

0:56:300:56:32

If we had been judging this yesterday,

0:56:320:56:34

we would have had James, Ripon and Dan.

0:56:340:56:37

Dan hauls himself out of it so it comes down to Ripon and James.

0:56:370:56:42

What progress have they made as fishermen this week? It is

0:56:420:56:46

-such a tough decision.

-It is real, real close.

0:56:460:56:48

Well, everyone, you've given myself and Todd a lot to think about.

0:57:000:57:08

Had we been asked to make the decision yesterday,

0:57:080:57:10

three of you would have been in danger of going home.

0:57:100:57:15

James...

0:57:150:57:16

..Ripon...and Dan.

0:57:170:57:20

However, Dan, you pulled yourself out of trouble.

0:57:200:57:25

So, the person going home is...

0:57:250:57:28

..Ripon. Sorry.

0:57:330:57:37

-The journey ends.

-Sorry, Rip.

-That's it. Journey ends.

0:57:370:57:41

-It's been amazing though.

-It has been a blast.

-Some good memories, guys.

0:57:420:57:48

It has broadened my horizon big-time.

0:57:480:57:50

It has been absolutely amazing.

0:57:500:57:52

I will miss you, mate.

0:57:520:57:54

I am up because I am through to the next round

0:57:540:57:57

but I've lost a best mate. It is hard. I'm trying not to cry!

0:57:570:58:01

You need a bit of luck in this competition so hopefully that

0:58:010:58:03

doesn't run out and carries on straight through to the final.

0:58:030:58:06

Four weeks in, it gets better and better.

0:58:060:58:08

We are going somewhere new next week.

0:58:080:58:11

Next time, the anglers journey to Canada...

0:58:110:58:14

Anything could be thrown at us this week.

0:58:140:58:16

..where they will be dropped in at the deep end.

0:58:160:58:18

It looks like you need a degree to use this thing here.

0:58:180:58:21

And everything is super-sized. Even the fish.

0:58:210:58:25

I think I've caught the Loch Ness monster!
