Eight anglers travelled the globe... | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
-Is he stuck? -Has he got it? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Wow! This place is nuts. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
..in search of the world's most extraordinary fish. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:16
-I think I've got Jaws on here. -Wow! | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
And only three have made it to the final. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
It's like a boyhood dream being here, man. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
One thing I've always wanted to do. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
My, my! Check that out. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
I've never experienced anything like this in my life before. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Which will test everything they've learned... | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
The conditions are shocking! | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
It's days like this that make you realise your true love of fishing. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
It is definitely as hot as it looks. I'm not going to lie, it's brutal. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
Now it's their last destination, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
and their final frontier - Zambia. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
Zambia in southern Africa. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
This is Africa at its wildest. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Local people live side-by-side with dangerous animals on land | 0:01:16 | 0:01:23
and in the river. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
The Zambezi stretches over 1,500 miles. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
Gentle rapids give way to the thundering waters of Victoria Falls. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:36
The Zambezi is amazing. It's one of the great rivers of the world. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
It's absolutely huge. There are hippos all over the place. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
There's elephants wandering around on the banks | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
but you've got to put all that aside, put it out of your mind, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
because in the water there are some magnificent fish, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
and some of them have got really, really sharp teeth. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
We're down to the last three. It's going to be tough | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
but they've got to concentrate on what they have learned, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
put it to good use, because there can only be one winner. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
-This is outstanding, boys. Look at where we are, Jimbo! -I know, mate. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
For the final, Matt will be joined by Charles Tembo, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
an experienced sport fishing guide | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
who's grown up fishing on the banks of this immense river. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
I started fishing when I was about six years old. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
It's going to be tough. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
I'm just looking forward to see them using their skills | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
to face the challenge they are going to find on the river. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
Oh, ho-ho! This place is just amazing, man. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
Being in the final is totally amazing. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
You need to pinch yourself. Your head's going 100mph, thinking, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
"What am I going to be catching? What am I going to be seeing?" | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
I'm a bit overwhelmed, to be honest! | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
The fish here have adapted to survive in these dangerous waters. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55
The anglers have just one week to prove they have the courage | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
and the skills to do the same. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
For me, fishing is very much a mental challenge | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
as much as a skill-based, physical challenge, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and now I've actually got a chance of becoming the champ, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
being here, I'm going to take that chance | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
and give it a really good shot this week. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
I never thought I'd see the final but here I am, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
we're all in with an equal chance of winning it | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
and hey, why can't it be me? Why can't it be that netsman from Wales? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
Welcome to the final. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Well done, guys. You have come a long way. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Six countries, four continents | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
and it all comes down to this last expedition. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
Now, for the first part of this journey | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
-you're after the mighty vundu catfish. -Yes! | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
Like all catfish species, vundu are mainly caught on bait. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
Vundu can grow up to 100 pounds and it's going to fight quite a lot | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
and you have to be strong enough to bring it in. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
We are looking for the fisherman to catch the biggest vundu. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
-Are you ready for it? -Yeah. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
-Go fish. -Cheers, guys. -Good luck. -Cheers. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
-Good luck, mate. -Good luck, mate. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
-Good luck, Danny boy. -Good luck, son. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
The anglers have just six hours with a guide, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
who will be the judges' eyes and ears | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
as they explore this intimidating stretch of river. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
-The adventure starts now. -Ho-ho! | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
The Zambezi runs through six different countries | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
before spilling into the Indian Ocean. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
The anglers are fishing in the Lower Zambezi National Park, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
so they will be releasing everything they catch. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
This part of the river is one of Africa's unspoiled wildernesses | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
and underneath the surface | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
this murky river is home to a vast number of fish, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
including the vundu catfish. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
Charles, we've obviously got quite a big river here. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
-Where are they going to find these catfish? -Normally with the catfish | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
we tend to fish in non-moving water, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
so it's just a matter of reading the water. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
How are they going to know they've got a vundu on their line? | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
A vundu won't even try to nibble on a bait. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
A vundu will just grab it one time and start moving. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
There's a lot of distractions for our anglers here. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
-Their senses are going to be in overdrive. -We have crocodiles, | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
we have hippos as well on the river. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:38
This is so fascinating, you know, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
because where we come from, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
the worst thing that can happen on a bad fishing trip | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
is that you get really wet, | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
but the chances of getting eaten by a crocodile in Dudley or something | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
are pretty slim. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
It's so quiet here. Everywhere we've been there's been boats | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
whizzing round or other things, planes going over. It's so... | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
You've just got to remember what's in the water. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
Everyone's a novice to this river and this species, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
but Sam was absolutely buzzing | 0:06:08 | 0:06:09
when he heard about what we're fishing for today. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
He is a very clever, clever man | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
and he knows a lot about species and locations. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
From my gut instinct, thinking we're going to be fishing for vundu, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
a catfish, I would be looking for somewhere off the main current, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
somewhere the water's a bit slower. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:24
They're lazy fish at the end of the day, aren't they? | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
-They don't want to expend energy unless they have to. -Yeah, for sure. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
Water moves fast on the outside of bends, and slower on the inside. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:34
Obstructions in the water | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
also distort the speed and direction of the current, | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
creating seams or creases. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
It's here, where fish find shelter, | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
that the fishermen will do best to cast their bait. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
You can see there's a current line | 0:06:51 | 0:06:52
coming off the end of this bank here, the current obviously | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
hits the bank and you can visually see it looking down there, | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
there's a line in the water. | 0:06:58 | 0:06:59
You got the slower water to the right-hand side of it | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
and the faster water to the left, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:03
and it's these current lines and seams which are where the fish sit. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
It's like the highway, you know, | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
they know they can sit just off the main highway, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
everything else is going past them. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
When they want to, they can dive in to feed. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
With a background in course and lure fishing, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
Sam has consistently done well in the rod and line challenges. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
My legs are shaking, my heart is pounding. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
Dorado! Dorado! | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
Look at that! | 0:07:25 | 0:07:26
Sam has been fishing since he was a young boy, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
having been taught to fish by his grandparents. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
-Oh, Sam, I didn't know you'd still got this. -Yeah, there you go. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
That belonged to my father. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
It's very, very thrilling to us... | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
Well, I know it was to my husband, and to me, to think that | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
he's still doing something that we started him off on. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
Oh, I'm so proud. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
You couldn't understand... | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
Sorry... | 0:07:50 | 0:07:51
He's my boy. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
It looks quite sedentary and sedate, what we're doing, which it is, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
but I can assure you, my brain is ticking over, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
constantly watching the water, thinking about what I'm doing. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
To make the most of their time, they need to be proactive, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
seeking out the very best places to fish... | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
The big bait has been out for a long time. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
-I think it's time we had a little wander. -I'd agree with that. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
Go and have a look somewhere. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:24
I would definitely try to find another spot. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
-..and manage two different rods at once. -There was a take there. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
But the fish dropped it. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:33
That's the problem with having two rods and too much going on, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
you've got to concentrate. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:37
Unless it was a hippo. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
The thing to do is not to panic. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
It's a competition but you've got to enjoy it. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
That's what fishing is about. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
Throughout the expedition, James has shown technical skill | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
and a real passion for all kinds of fishing. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
Boyhood dream come true. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
And all kinds of fish. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
That's the most amazing fish I've ever seen. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
But there is no fishing like home, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
where he is a proud member of the local fishing club | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
that he joined as a boy. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
I've known James for at least 20 years now. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
He joined the club as a junior. He was coming into my shop | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
and asking me, "Oh, I've got this and I was doing this." | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
I just gave him a little bit of advice | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
and we'd be standing like idiots in the shop | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
pretending we were casting rods and he just picks it up naturally. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
He's naturally gifted that way. If James wins, I'll be very proud | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
and I know he's got it in him to do it. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
He could definitely do it without a doubt. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:38
Two hours in, and no fish have been caught. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
HIPPO GRUNTS | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
I know, my thoughts exactly. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
Yeah, you've got to be patient. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
Hold your nerve, that's what it's about in this game. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
But holding their nerve isn't always that easy. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
I wanted to go over there because you could see feeding birds, | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
both fish-eating birds. The only problem is that | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
Mr Crocodile has now gone and sat in between those. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
80% of the crocodile's diet is fish, | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
so that croc has just chased off our fish. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
The best thing to do is move from here | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
and then I can set the rod up over the other side. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
We're off. We've got a good one. Let's get away from this snag. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
We've got some action. Fantastic. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
We've got a catfish! | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29
Here we go. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
Look at that. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:35
He's in the net. Fantastic! We've got a catfish. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
There we go. Vundu catfish. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
Quite a bizarre-looking fish. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:44
Very, very ugly, but all the same, | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
it's the first vundu of the day so I'm chuffed to bits with that. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
I think we'll get this one back, then try and catch another one, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
maybe go for Plan C by that other snag. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
OK. There you go. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
Ha-ha! Fantastic! | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
Just over an hour left to catch the biggest vundu of the day. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:05
And Dan is still competing with the locals. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:10
Now, that croc has just been up and sunned itself here. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
I think it's time for us to move on to another patch. I'm a croc magnet. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:17
Dan comes from a traditional net-fishing background | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
and has the least experience with rod and line, | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
but he's managed to catch some of the biggest fish of the competition, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
often in the final moments. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
I've seen big fish before, but nothing like this. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
This is one of the greatest achievements of my life. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
After my kids and my wife, you know, this is one of the greatest moments. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
I think fishing now has become even more a part of his life. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
He's learnt so much in the process. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
I'm really proud of Dan, I really am. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
He's done so well. Yeah, really proud. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
I'm slimming my bait down, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
because it might be that I'm fishing with too big a bait. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:57
It's a lot more open here but there's a nice patch of quiet water | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
over there, which my bait is going to go into straightaway. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Had a bite? | 0:12:06 | 0:12:07
Definitely got one here. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Come on, my man, get this catfish into the net. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
It's not the biggest catfish in the world but it's a catfish. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:23
Proud moment, caught a vundu, my biggest catfish to date. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
I'm going to put him back in the water now, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
-so just let him go back in? -Yeah. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
And off he goes. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
If there's one thing I've learned | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
through my whole time on this adventure, it's never give up. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
How many times have you seen me catch a fish late on in the day? | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
How do you think you'd sum up our fishermen? | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
Heart, mind and soul for me. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
I look at Dan, he's got a latent talent | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
and now he's starting to develop it, | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
so fishing's in his soul, if you like. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
Then I look at someone like James. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
He's about heart, he's really loved this experience. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
Wow, look at the size of him! Ho-ho! Prehistoric! | 0:13:00 | 0:13:05
Let's get away from him! | 0:13:05 | 0:13:06
Different environments, types of fish, techniques, | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
and he's absolutely loving it. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
-Could we have a go near, guys? -There's another croc there. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
Oh, crocodiles. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:15
The mind part is Sam. Sam is very technical. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
This looks like it's worth a drop. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
Yeah, there's a great big snag in the river here, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
but they like hanging out in the snags, the vundu. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
That sounds like playing with fire, that does. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
He does as much research as he can, so he does everything by the book. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
Let's see what we can do. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
And then there's the element of luck and whichever way you hang it... | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
-Oh, oh! -Yeah, yeah, that's a bite. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
I think you've missed your chance. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
That's because... I told you not to talk to me now, Matt! | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
-How many times did I tell you? -Yeah. -I can't multitask. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
I'm so sorry, I just thought that you were now so experienced | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
-that a moment like that would not... -Do you know how big that fish was? | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
Just 30 minutes left. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
Just trying a bit above that tree and I'm not going to cast, | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
we're just going to throw it in, cos that looks like another good spot. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
James is the only finalist not to have caught a vundu... | 0:14:11 | 0:14:14
We need to catch one today. I need to catch one today. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
There's nothing going on here at all. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
It looked like a fantastic spot but nothing. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
..whilst Dan and Sam have landed one each. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
Coming back to the spot we had some success at earlier. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
What did we have? One fish and two good bites, | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
so come back here to see if there's still a few more vundu at home. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
Everyone is desperate to catch the biggest of the day. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
I really want to catch a bigger one. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
Really, really, really do want to catch a bigger one! | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
This is proper shaded, we've got a lovely little back area here. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
I'm going to stick the smaller rod just out there | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
where there's hardly any flow at all | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
and we're going to catch a big catfish. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
See, this is where we were getting the bites earlier, you know, | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
where there's a lot of reeds, | 0:15:00 | 0:15:01
and it just seems, I don't know, safer or... | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
-Oh, fast, fast! -Dodging hippos for fun. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
Today has been tough. My brain has been going overtime. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
You've got the pressure of the competition and the time as well. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
It's not like a fishing holiday. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
When this is all over, I'm booking myself a fishing holiday! | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
It's the last few minutes, you are on edge, you go, | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
"I don't want to miss this!" | 0:15:24 | 0:15:25
That's it, time up, everyone! Rods up. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:30
HE SIGHS | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
Hey, guys. You look a bit like three naughty schoolboys! | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
That's how we feel! | 0:15:49 | 0:15:50
Matt, how do you think they did as a group? | 0:15:50 | 0:15:53
Generally, I think you did fairly well. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
I would like to have seen a few more vundu catfish caught, | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
-if I'm brutally honest. -Charles, how do you think Sam got on today? | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
Sam, for the fishing, was great. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:04
Your choosing of the spot, it was perfect. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:08
You came out with a very nice vundu catfish that weighed 17.5 pounds. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
There was one moment that summed up for me that you were at home. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:16
You flicked a bait close to the bank and it was very precise | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
and very deft, and it showed that you were totally comfortable | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
-with the tackle that you were using. Well done. -Thanks, Matt. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
I think, James, the fishing went fairly well. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
You certainly selected some sensible spots. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
-Unfortunately, you didn't catch a vundu. -No. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
One thing which I also noticed is that his cast, | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
he wasn't too far away, then on that, maybe you have to improve. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:40
-On to Dan. -Yeah, I thought it was an interesting performance from you. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:44
Certainly, your choice of spots | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
instinctively was pretty good. You genuinely embraced the challenge. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
You caught a vundu that weighed five pounds. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
It wasn't an enormous vundu, but nonetheless, | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
it was the target species. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
So, I thought it was a good performance, Dan. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Thank you very much. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
Well, as you probably worked out, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
-the winner of today's fishing expedition is Sam. -Well done, buddy. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
-Congratulations, Sam. -Thank you so much. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
Because this is the final, you don't get to choose a team for tomorrow. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
From now on, it's each man for himself. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:16
Get some sleep after that - early start tomorrow. Shall we go? | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
Well done. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
To start like that in the final | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
and have comments like that, pretty cool. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
It's been a good day. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:35
It's nice not to finish bottom of the pile. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
It's going to be an interesting couple of days, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
I'm looking forward to it. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
I know it's irritating, but all you can do is take each day as it | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
comes and see what tomorrow brings. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
It's an early start for the anglers, | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
as they journey an hour and a half upriver | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
to the area where Charles grew up. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
This village is outside the National Park. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:11
For the local people, the Zambezi is a powerful lifeline - | 0:18:11 | 0:18:16
for cooking, cleaning, watering crops and, of course, catching fish. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:22
But with it comes risks. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
The locals are used to facing | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
the dangers of this river on a daily basis. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
Women tend to fish from the banks, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
where the men use these mokoro canoes. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
I'm not going on one of them! | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
There is not a chance in hell I'm going on one of them! | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
That's exactly what you're going on, I'm sure of it. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
I'm nervous. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
I just don't want to be in any little boat in that water, like! | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
-Morning. ALL: -Morning. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
Welcome to the village. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
On the way down the Zambezi this morning, | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
I'm sure you saw plenty of locals. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
For them, they have to face the dangers of this river | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
on a daily basis, and today, you will be braving it, | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
too, as you join the locals in their dugout mokoro canoes. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
You are going to do the traditional way of fishing. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
So, you are going to fish with the long bamboo fishing rod. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:19
There is something very pure about fishing with a pole | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
and a simple line, and I think this challenge is going to tell us a lot. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
The angler who brings back the most fish is the winner. Ready for it? | 0:19:27 | 0:19:32
-Yep. -Please stay in the boats! | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
THEY CHUCKLE | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
-Go fish! -Good luck, guys. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
The one thing I don't want to do! | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
-Let's go! -Good luck, mate. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
-That croc there, watch him, James! -Whoa! | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Stripped of all the modern fishing kit | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
that they are used to, the finalists have just an hour and a half | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
-to catch as many fish as they can. -Are you stable? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
Yeah, I'm OK. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
Fishing here is a survival skill. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
The locals must learn to catch fish to feed their families. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
So, the bigger, the better. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
But the bigger fish are tough to catch and land | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
on such light equipment. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
Right, mate, let's catch some fish. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
The set-up we've got here is about as simple as you could | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
possibly get, it's very Huckleberry Finn-esque, this sort of fishing. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:28
When you get back to the basics of fishing, with a pole and line, that | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
is quintessentially the most pure form of sport fishing that there is. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:39
I grew up in this area, you know, most local people go to the river | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
and try to fish, like, chessa, kupi and even tiger fish. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:47
It would be more interesting to see them fishing in our local | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
tradition type of fishing. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
A fishing line is attached to a simple branch or pole. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
A float is made from the pith of a reed, | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
which can be moved | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
up and down the line | 0:21:01 | 0:21:02
to set the bait at a chosen depth. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
Sitting on the surface of the water, | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
it will dip to indicate a bite from below. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
It's all quite close quarters, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
but a couple of metres can make a hell of a difference. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
The main thing with this sort of fishing is, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
just be patient, wait and watch. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
As soon as that float goes down, strike into the fish. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
The float is just an indicator to tell you you've got a bite, | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
otherwise you are fishing blind, totally. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
You can't see the fish - they are definitely there. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
Well, deep down, you hope they are there! | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
HE CHUCKLES | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
The judges are looking for pure fishing skills - | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
watercraft, delicate presentation of the bait and stealth. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:41
You have to be quiet, though. Ssh! | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
Important, yeah? Come on, fish! Oh, little twitch, did you see that? | 0:21:43 | 0:21:49
Tch-tch! | 0:21:49 | 0:21:50
-Lots of small fish down there. -Smaller. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
Yeah. Come on, fish! | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
Aha! That's weed. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
That's the problem with fishing here, | 0:22:00 | 0:22:02
you're fishing in a lot of weed. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
But that's where the fish are feeding and hiding. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
Just changing spots, because it was a little bit shallow there. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:11
-Oh, he's got one. -Yes! | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
Coming through. How are we getting on, Dan? | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
-Not as good as him over there. -Any bites? -No, just small ones. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
Just mosquitoes! | 0:22:23 | 0:22:24
Half an hour gone and only Sam has caught a fish. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:29
Well, Ben is out there fishing, look, paddling down in his canoe. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:34
In the history of British seamanship, | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
you've got people like Sir Francis Drake, Horatio Nelson... | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
-and there he is, the latest, Admiral Fogle! -Exactly. -I can hear that! | 0:22:40 | 0:22:46
THEY CHUCKLE | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
Just waiting for that flow to go under. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
Ah! | 0:22:52 | 0:22:53 | |
Tried to bite there, didn't get a good hold, though. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
Oh! | 0:22:58 | 0:22:59 | |
They're tormenting me! | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
Sometimes, just twitch the rod very slightly and the worm moves in | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
the water and it gives it a kick and sometimes that can induce a bite. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
Oh! Oh-ho-ho! Missed that one! | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
-Oh, yes! That's a fish! -Whoo! | 0:23:11 | 0:23:15
-That's a tiger! -Tiger fish. -Good job! | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
Oh, me first ever tiger fish! Ohh! Get in! So happy. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:25
That's a great catch for a worm. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
(There is fish here. Ssh! Stay here!) | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
These margin areas are where the smaller species, | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
like this tilapia, this is where they hang out, in the vegetation, | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
because you've seen the tiger fish that are in this river. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
James just caught a small one, there are huge shoals of marauding | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
tigers in here that chomp their way through all sorts of small fish, | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
so they stay in the margins, where they are hidden | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
and out of sight, just in the cover, because they feel safe and secure. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
I'm just not moving much, I think | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
that's the key to staying balanced in these boats. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
If you move around too much, there is | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
every chance it is going to tip over. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
But if you are going to be a traditional fisherman, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
you really should do it properly. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:06
Or at least try to! | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
Mm-hm. Can you hold my hand? | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
OK. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16 | |
Then you do it like this. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
-This, come, come on a bit. -Through there? | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
Fish from there, where there is good stuff. Now... | 0:24:21 | 0:24:27
OK. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:28 | |
-How's that? -Well, I can see better. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
It is a bit risky, but, you know, live on the edge. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
If the crocs want a bit of Welsh rump, fair play to them! | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
-CHARLES: -I saw him standing in the mokoro, | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
meaning that it is more comfortable, you know, fishing on this river. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
Back in Wales, he fishes from this coracle boat, they are quite | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
unstable, actually, so it is a great skill to steer the... | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
I think he feels at home. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
-Halfway... -Ohh! Oh-ho-ho! | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
..and Dan is the only one not to have caught. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
Time to go for a move now. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
There is no fish where I was there, so we're going to go up, | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
-we are prospecting! -Let's go down a bit. Just after that bent tree. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
-Hey, how is it going? -Here's me good luck charm! | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
How much pressure is there on you now? | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
A lot of pressure, because I didn't catch a vundu yesterday, | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
and obviously, the two guys did, so there is always pressure on. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:30
How are you getting on with the mokoro? | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
It's fine, I'm just getting a bit numb. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
It's just making sure that you are nice and steady. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
-There we go. -There is a fish! Yes, fish! | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
-There is a fish! -Ah! What was I saying? Good luck charm, mate! | 0:25:40 | 0:25:46
You can fish with me any day! | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
With two big fish in the boat, James is going for quality... | 0:25:48 | 0:25:55
Got fish! | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
-..whilst Dan... -I've just had two fish | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
-straight after each other. -..is all about quantity. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
But while Calvin was having a look round, I just decided to put | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
my worm in here, and as you can see, that's three fish within 30 seconds. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:10
Instincts, you know, just do what you're here to do. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
If your line is not in the water, you're not going to catch any fish. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
-How's it going, Sam? -I got a tilapia, fairly early on. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
Oh, a little bite there as well! Oh, nearly missed a bite right there! | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
What do you think is teasing you there? | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
There is a lot of smaller fish around, | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
-so I'm getting a lot of bites. There we go. -Oh! Does that count? | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
-That definitely counts, it's heads of fish today, isn't it? -Hold it up. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
-They all count today. -Sorry, I shouldn't laugh! | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
That's one of the smallest fish I've ever caught. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
But, boy, does it count today, huh? | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
Time is running out in their last traditional challenge. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
No, I don't say that I've had a fantastic day today, | 0:26:49 | 0:26:53
but I've got three fish in the boat, small fish, | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
-but it's headcount, it's not size today. -Is it the last five minutes? | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
-It's flown by! -A lot of small fish under here. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
When you saw the size of that last one I caught, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
I would love to catch another fish right now | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
in the last few minutes, that would be fantastic. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
I think it will be a close run thing today, that's for sure. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
I think we are in the last 30 seconds, so come on! | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
I think that's five times I've had them drop off! | 0:27:17 | 0:27:21
Oh! That was unlucky. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
Time, anglers! Lines up. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:28
That's it. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:29
I've caught fish, we'll just see how the guys have got on. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
Being a traditional fisherman myself, | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
I've come out and I've caught fish traditionally again. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
I didn't catch many, but, hey, I'm not going back empty-handed, | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
I've got something to chuck in the pot tonight. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:42
It would be fantastic to win the first two | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
challenges in the final, you know, that would be going | 0:27:45 | 0:27:47
into the last challenge totally confident, that would be fantastic. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:51
The anglers return to the village | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
to find out which of them has caught the most fish for dinner. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:58
All right, boys? | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
Lovely. Hey, buddy. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
-Afternoon. ALL: -Afternoon. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
First of all, I want to thank you for not becoming crocodile lunch! | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
You all stayed in, I thought you were great in the mokoros. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
Dan, your coracle experience obviously shone through, | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
I think you were the only one to stand up. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:17
Yeah, I had a little bit of help with my balance, so it was good. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:20
-Sam, can you show us how many fish you caught? -Certainly. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
I caught two fish. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:26
I think I need to be issued with a microscope to see one of them! | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
Um, you were obviously using the equipment quite well to | 0:28:29 | 0:28:33
present the bait, you were pretty deft at flicking out your float, | 0:28:33 | 0:28:36
-I think it was a pretty neat performance. -Thanks, Matt. -James? | 0:28:36 | 0:28:40
-I caught two. -Very nice. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:42
I know that you took the result with the vundu pretty hard, | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
but you picked yourself up and you caught two nice fish there, | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
they are both visible to the naked eye, seriously, that is | 0:28:48 | 0:28:52
pretty impressive, to land them on that light equipment, good for you. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
-Cheers. -Dan, can you show us what you caught? -I had three fish today. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
It's a little bit embarrassing... | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
-THEY LAUGH -..because that is what I caught! | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
-Can you confirm there were three for us? -Yeah, there are three in there. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:08
We did ask, you know, for the number. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:10
Even though they are quite small fish. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:12
What would your wife say if you brought that back for the table? | 0:29:12 | 0:29:16
My wife would say that, | 0:29:16 | 0:29:17
you know, for even one person, it won't be enough! | 0:29:17 | 0:29:19
On any other day, it may have come down to weight, | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
but Charles and Matt set it as the greatest quantity of fish. | 0:29:22 | 0:29:26
And on that basis, Dan, you are today's winner. Well done. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:31
-Sorry, lads! -Good job. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
I'm just going to double-check, is there definitely... | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
Yeah, it is definitely a fish! Cheers, Matt, thank you. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
Thank you all very much. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
'All of the fish caught, both large and very small, | 0:29:41 | 0:29:46
'are prepared for dinner.' | 0:29:46 | 0:29:48
A little bit embarrassing on the size of the fish, | 0:29:48 | 0:29:50
but they said it was down to count, and I had the most. | 0:29:50 | 0:29:53
So, even though it's a little bit of a cheeky one, I'll take it. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
Does your husband bring back fish this small? | 0:29:56 | 0:29:59
THEY LAUGH | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
So close, again! | 0:30:03 | 0:30:04
When I'm saying so close, that was the size of the fish that beat us! | 0:30:04 | 0:30:07
-Thank you very much. Are you ready? Ta-da! -Oh, yeah. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:11
I've made a really good start in this final competition here in | 0:30:11 | 0:30:14
Zambia, so I've just got to go out there and sock it to 'em tomorrow. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:17
That's lush. | 0:30:17 | 0:30:19
-I don't know if that's going to last me the whole day, but... -No, no. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
I think I need to pull it out the bag tomorrow, | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
if I can win, that means each one of us will have won a task. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:30
If you want to win this, you've got to have a big day tomorrow. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:33
And I'm hoping that I can have a big day tomorrow | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
and be in with a shout at the end of it. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:39
HIPPOS GRUNT | 0:30:46 | 0:30:47
It's the final challenge of their worldwide expedition. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50
The remaining three anglers must use all the skills they've learnt | 0:30:55 | 0:30:59
in one last chance to impress the judges, | 0:30:59 | 0:31:02
who have been watching their techniques closely. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:06
All three of these guys have got different qualities. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:09
In Dan's case, I've seen huge progress. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
But it's his sheer instinct that's actually his biggest asset. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:18
What Sam's really good at is the tactical side of things. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:21
He's strong on the bait fishing side, | 0:31:21 | 0:31:24
strong on the lure fishing side, if he's got a weakness, | 0:31:24 | 0:31:27
it's probably his fly fishing, but he masks it very, very well. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:32
I knew that James would be good at fly fishing. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
I think spin fishing has become something | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
he's very much at home with, | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
the bait fishing may still be a little bit of a chink in his armour. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:43
But he has learnt a lot, amazingly fast. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
I'm looking for the complete angler. But I know it's going to be tight. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:51
Good morning. | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
-ALL: -Morning. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:54
Well, for the final part of your worldwide fishing marathon, | 0:31:54 | 0:31:58
you are after one of the most ferocious game fish here in Zambia. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:03
It is often described as Africa's piranha. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
It's the tiger fish. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:09
I knew it! | 0:32:09 | 0:32:10
Because our judges are looking for the complete all-rounder, | 0:32:10 | 0:32:14
we are looking for the fisherman | 0:32:14 | 0:32:17
who can catch the tiger fish on the fly... | 0:32:17 | 0:32:21
..on bait, on the lure. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
-Are you ready for this? -Absolutely. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:28
You will be fishing over the next two days for your chance to be | 0:32:28 | 0:32:32
crowned our fishing champion. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:34
-Go fish! -Cheers, mate. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:36
-Let's go, boys. Good luck, gentlemen! All the best. -Good luck. | 0:32:46 | 0:32:49
Good luck, guys. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:51
I'm really, really excited about today. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
There we go, we are off. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
The anglers face the biggest test so far, to combine everything | 0:32:57 | 0:33:02
they've learnt across six countries and 17 challenges, | 0:33:02 | 0:33:07
to catch one of the most fearsome fish in Africa. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:11
Got it all to play for today! | 0:33:11 | 0:33:13
Big day, big day. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:15
Tiger fish are powerful swimmers. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
With sharp, interlocking teeth, they are highly effective predators. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:26
I've always felt an affinity with tiger fish, | 0:33:26 | 0:33:28
because they have got a dentistry like me! | 0:33:28 | 0:33:29
But they are seriously the fish of your nightmares. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
They've got a mouth like a steel trap. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
It's a fish which can tend to fight and jump when you catch it. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:40
Making it about three disciplines really opens it up, | 0:33:40 | 0:33:43
because it is harder to get lucky three times. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:46
If you can catch a fish on each method, for me, that's | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
a bigger achievement than just getting one big fish on one method. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:52
They have learned quite a lot, it's whether they have learned enough. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:55
I'm looking to cast around this submerged structure. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:58
This is where the small fish are hanging out and where the tiger fish | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
are laying, waiting to pounce on their prey. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03
It really is about getting as tight in as you can to the structure. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
Got to draw them out from their lair. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:08
The first tactical decision to make is which method to start on. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:14
I'm most comfortable with the lure fishing equipment. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:16
I'd rather get one on the lure first, | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
then change to fishing with the fly. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:20
Not worried about what everyone else is up to, you just get distracted. | 0:34:20 | 0:34:23
I'm going to stick to my game plan. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:25
-Look at that, right into the bank. -Perfect casting! | 0:34:25 | 0:34:28
Thank you, mate. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:29
I feel at my most confident when I've got a fly rod in my hand. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:32
Just being active, covering new water, | 0:34:32 | 0:34:34
trying to entice these tiger fish. Where's the tigers? | 0:34:34 | 0:34:37
Whilst James and Sam have both chosen to start with their strongest | 0:34:37 | 0:34:40
method, Dan has other ideas. | 0:34:40 | 0:34:43
I'm just having a few practice casts, you know, | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
so I can see the fly, see how it's moving. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
I think I'm going to surprise a few people. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
I'm fly fishing first, | 0:34:49 | 0:34:50
which I consider to be my weakest discipline. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
Fly fishing, it's the most difficult one. | 0:34:53 | 0:34:55
You know, to tell you the truth, if I see someone, you know, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
catching a big tiger fish on a fly rod, it's like the most challenging. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:02
For me, I'd be thinking about a tiger fish in the shade, | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
down near the bottom, so you've got to put it close to him, | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
you've got to do that quickly, you've got to do it quietly | 0:35:08 | 0:35:11
and you've got to do it efficiently. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:13
Oh, we're into a snag. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:15
We're fishing with sinking lines - | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
if the fly's not coming up every now and again with weed on it, | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
then you know you're not in the right place. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:22
I'm trying to cast over towards the bank over there. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:30
I'm hoping there's some prey fish or something going to be there. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
Something to switch the tiger fish onto. | 0:35:33 | 0:35:35
Oh, fish, fish! Oh, it's dropped it! | 0:35:37 | 0:35:39
It was a tiger, I saw it. Tiger fish. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:41
Exciting stuff! | 0:35:41 | 0:35:42
That's why I love fishing. | 0:35:42 | 0:35:44
The net, please. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:47
It's not the biggest fish in the world, | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
but that it is a tiger fish on the fly. | 0:35:50 | 0:35:52
-Got it! -And there you have it. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:54
That's probably 250 grams. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56
Who's to say I can't win this with a tidy fish? | 0:35:56 | 0:35:58
That must really surprise you about Dan. | 0:35:58 | 0:36:00
It's not a big tiger fish, but, um, superb achievement. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:03
And, really, he's got the most difficult thing out of the way. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:06
Fly fishing is James' thing. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:07
Dan will be doing it cos he feels | 0:36:07 | 0:36:09
he wants to get the difficult bit out the way. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
James will probably be embracing it | 0:36:11 | 0:36:13
and thinking, "Well, this is my best shot." | 0:36:13 | 0:36:15
But he hasn't caught one yet, | 0:36:15 | 0:36:17
and, I mean, Dan has totally put the cat among the pigeons, totally. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
I've caught a fish | 0:36:20 | 0:36:21
on what I consider to be my weakest discipline. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
I'm going to give it another 20 minutes | 0:36:24 | 0:36:26
to see if we can get a bigger one. | 0:36:26 | 0:36:28
Two hours gone, | 0:36:28 | 0:36:31
and Dan's tiny tiger has put him in the lead. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:36
That's Jamesy boy coming on, there. | 0:36:40 | 0:36:43
Why, aye, man! How are you getting on? | 0:36:43 | 0:36:45
Er, not too good. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:47
Have you caught a tiger fish on the fly yet? | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
No. Have you? | 0:36:49 | 0:36:50
-Aye. -You've had one? | 0:36:50 | 0:36:52
-Good luck, anyway, pal. -Cheers, mate. | 0:36:52 | 0:36:54
I'm happy with me casting, it's in the right spot. | 0:36:57 | 0:37:00
I think I'm using the right fly, | 0:37:00 | 0:37:01
I think I'm using the right technique. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:03
I'll get one when I deserve one, when I'm ready for one. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:06
Can we go to the far side? It's too shallow here. | 0:37:06 | 0:37:09
Right, then, boys and girls, let's go lure fishing. | 0:37:09 | 0:37:12
There's a bit of a back eddy there, looks perfect. | 0:37:17 | 0:37:20
Oh, there we go! There we go! | 0:37:20 | 0:37:22
-There's a tiger? -Yeah. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:24
That's a good fish, that. Oh, please! | 0:37:24 | 0:37:26
Fight is unreal, and very acrobatic. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
Oh, no, no, no. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:30
Whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:37:32 | 0:37:33
Idea is just to let the rod do all the work. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:35
Perfect - if he wants to take the line, he can take it. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:38
What a fight on this rod! | 0:37:38 | 0:37:39
Oh, he's a beautiful fish. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:40
Please don't come off, please don't come off, please don't come off. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:45
Yes! What a fish! | 0:37:45 | 0:37:47
What a fish. Oh, my God. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:49
-If you can actually hold that... -Hold it... | 0:37:49 | 0:37:53
and then by the tail? | 0:37:53 | 0:37:54
-Yeah. -Under like that? Oh, my God. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:58
Look at that for a fish! I'm over the moon! | 0:37:58 | 0:38:00
Oh, my God, I've always wanted this - what a cracking fish! | 0:38:00 | 0:38:03
A proper tiger fish. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
It's a great fish to catch on a fly rod, | 0:38:05 | 0:38:08
it's miles bigger than Dan's. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:10
Yeah, it's a massive, you know, tiger fish. | 0:38:10 | 0:38:13
So, on my opinion, it's like he has just, you know, hit on the target. | 0:38:13 | 0:38:18
-JAMES: -A take like that, acrobatic jumps, | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
is totally amazing. | 0:38:21 | 0:38:22
I'm absolutely lost for words. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
Already halfway through their first day of tiger fishing, | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
and all three finalists are now using a lure... | 0:38:31 | 0:38:33
I'm just going to chuck a couple of spinners in there, | 0:38:33 | 0:38:36
just cos of the trees and the water and stuff, and it just looks... | 0:38:36 | 0:38:39
it looks quite nice. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41
Yeah, where there's fish eagles, there's fish. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:43
Oh, there was a take. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
First hit of the day - about time, too. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:48
..but, for Sam, it's still his first method. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:52
How are you getting on, Sam? | 0:38:52 | 0:38:53
I'm all right. I've had one hit, but nothing to the boat yet. | 0:38:53 | 0:38:56
Still using the lure, spinning? | 0:38:56 | 0:38:58
Yeah, I'm starting with the lure rod, I'm going | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
to try and get one on the lure, move on to the fly, and then the bait. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
I've got my strategy, just going to work my way through it, | 0:39:03 | 0:39:06
rather than chop and change all the time. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:08
-It's been pretty tough so far. -OK. Fingers crossed. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
-Good luck, Sam. -Cheers, Ben, thank you. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:13
On a river with so many ways to get their line snagged... | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
Need to get tight to that bank, underneath the cover. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
..casting a lure accurately is key. | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
My casting's pretty spot on. | 0:39:22 | 0:39:24
It's just practice - it's something I've done most of my life. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
If you practise it, you get good at it, | 0:39:27 | 0:39:29
and you get good at placing the spot and working out how much | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
effort you need to put into the cast and what have you. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:36
-DAN: -There's little grooves in the bank. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
We're just trying to get them in those little grooves. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:42
I didn't do a very good cast, there, | 0:39:43 | 0:39:45
I need to be a bit more accurate with my casting. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:47
Needs to be right in those Vs. | 0:39:47 | 0:39:48
-The spinning, it's all about precision. -Yeah. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
Right in that eddy. | 0:39:54 | 0:39:55
In a way, I feel in my element. | 0:39:55 | 0:39:56
I don't know, it's nice - I'm on a river. | 0:39:56 | 0:39:58
I sometimes spin for salmon when the water's too high, | 0:39:58 | 0:40:01
so it's not too far away from what I do, in a way. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
With James and Dan already off the mark, | 0:40:04 | 0:40:07
they're feeling pretty confident. | 0:40:07 | 0:40:09
We're in. Oh, it's off, it's off, it's off. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
Fantastic spot here. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:14
Yeah, yeah, fish on. Definitely. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:17
Oh, it's come off! | 0:40:17 | 0:40:19
Definitely my fault. I need to keep my rod down. | 0:40:19 | 0:40:21
-I keep my rod up too high. -Yeah, that's it. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:23
That's weed. | 0:40:23 | 0:40:25
Oh, no, it's a tiger fish! | 0:40:25 | 0:40:26
Oh, it's off. Oh, no! | 0:40:27 | 0:40:31
So, the plan is to go downstream. | 0:40:31 | 0:40:33
We've hammered this three times, so, I think, | 0:40:33 | 0:40:35
trying to find some new bits. | 0:40:35 | 0:40:37
We're going to stay in this area for a little while now. | 0:40:39 | 0:40:41
I know I'm doing the right technique to catch them, | 0:40:41 | 0:40:43
I just need to get the technique right to land them. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:45
This area here looks spot on. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
James might be at the perfect spot, | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
but he's not the only one that thinks so. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:53
Oh... Looks like we've got a bit of an audience now, so... | 0:40:53 | 0:40:56
Are they going in? | 0:40:56 | 0:40:57
Cheers, guys. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:00
Absolutely ruined me fishing. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:02
HE CHUCKLES | 0:41:04 | 0:41:05
Whilst James and Dan persist with the lures, | 0:41:09 | 0:41:13
Sam reluctantly moves on. | 0:41:13 | 0:41:15
Decided to change and have a go with some bait fishing. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:17
Got a nice little spot here, | 0:41:17 | 0:41:19
we're going to soak the bait for a little while while we're down here. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
Give it a try, see if that is a successful tactic today. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
I think it looks like a very good spot for bait fishing, | 0:41:25 | 0:41:27
-but, so far, Sam hasn't caught a fish. -Yeah. | 0:41:27 | 0:41:29
He was convinced he was going to catch some spinning, | 0:41:29 | 0:41:32
he knows he's still got the fly fishing mountain to climb - | 0:41:32 | 0:41:35
that's his hardest discipline. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:36
I think he could be very frustrated. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:38
One thing which I've also noticed, | 0:41:38 | 0:41:40
the sinker he's using is quite heavy. | 0:41:40 | 0:41:41
-Yeah. -That sinker will... -You think that's too heavy... -Yeah. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:45
..and the fish will actually feel the weight of the sinker | 0:41:45 | 0:41:47
-and maybe drop the bait. -Exactly. | 0:41:47 | 0:41:49
Sam's done quite a lot of course fishing, | 0:41:49 | 0:41:51
-and should be very familiar with the concept... -Yeah. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
-..of balancing the size of the sinker with the current. -Yeah. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:57
So, actually, that's quite a surprising error. | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
90 minutes left of their penultimate day of fishing. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:03
In their epic quest to catch on all three methods, | 0:42:03 | 0:42:07
Sam is the only one not to have caught a tiger fish at all. | 0:42:07 | 0:42:11
Oh, you've always got to be optimistic, as a fisherman. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:14
Eternal optimists. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:15
James and Dan are still on their second method. | 0:42:15 | 0:42:19
-Yeah... -Got something. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:23
-Oh, a tiger fish! -Just got to get it in the net. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
It's... It's pulling all right. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:29
Yeah. | 0:42:29 | 0:42:31 | |
Oh, I missed it again. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:32
Kept the rod tipped down, that time. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:34
With these tiger fish, you will lose more than you'll catch. | 0:42:34 | 0:42:36
Ohh... | 0:42:36 | 0:42:38
Gutted. He was on for a second. Look at that - minced. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:42
Let's have another cast, see if there's any more down there. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:46
There we go - we're on. We're on. Get the net, quick! | 0:42:46 | 0:42:50
Get in! Yes! | 0:42:50 | 0:42:51
Push on - here it comes. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
Yes, come on! | 0:42:53 | 0:42:54
They look like something you'd find in a sci-fi movie. | 0:42:54 | 0:42:57
Best feeling ever, that's totally amazing. | 0:42:57 | 0:42:59
That's one on the fly, one on the spinner. | 0:42:59 | 0:43:01
We're going to put him back in the water. | 0:43:01 | 0:43:03
That's a great relief - I've had one on the fly, now, | 0:43:03 | 0:43:05
I've had one on the lure. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:06
Doing a little bit of lure fishing, as well, | 0:43:06 | 0:43:08
with the bait soaking there. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:10
Just to get anything right now would be fantastic, you know? | 0:43:10 | 0:43:13
Yep, fish on. | 0:43:21 | 0:43:23
Oh, thank goodness for that, we got one. | 0:43:25 | 0:43:27
About time, too! There we go. | 0:43:27 | 0:43:29
First one I've ever caught - pretty chuffed with that. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:33
Beautiful fish. | 0:43:33 | 0:43:34
Couldn't have come at a better time, huh? | 0:43:34 | 0:43:36
-Yeah, very fine. -Fantastic. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:37
Right, now let's go and catch one on the lure. | 0:43:37 | 0:43:39
Phwoar! It's hard work! | 0:43:39 | 0:43:42
Last cast. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:43
Gap there. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:45
Game over. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:48
Day one. | 0:43:48 | 0:43:50
The finalists have put everything they have | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
into getting to know this enormous river... | 0:43:54 | 0:43:58
and for James, the novelty still hasn't worn off. | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
Look at this! Doesn't get much better than this. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:04
You've got hippos, crocodiles - | 0:44:04 | 0:44:06
look how close we are to this elephant. | 0:44:06 | 0:44:09
That is absolutely amazing. | 0:44:09 | 0:44:11
What an end to a perfect day. | 0:44:13 | 0:44:15
Does it get any better? | 0:44:15 | 0:44:17
Oh, my God. | 0:44:18 | 0:44:19
Cheers, guys. See you tomorrow. | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
-Danny boy. -How's it going, guys? | 0:44:33 | 0:44:35
-Jamesy boy. -How did yous get on? | 0:44:35 | 0:44:37
Two out of three ain't bad. | 0:44:37 | 0:44:39
-Good job. -Same here. -Fly and spinner. -Same here! | 0:44:39 | 0:44:42
-Nothing on the bait. -Any good? | 0:44:42 | 0:44:45
-One of them. -Just the one? -Just the one. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:48
-Yeah. It's... -It's been a hard day. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:50
There's not many places you can go in the world | 0:44:57 | 0:44:59
and have wild elephants, hippos, crocs... | 0:44:59 | 0:45:01
-Yeah. -Outside your back door. It's surreal. -Oh, yeah. | 0:45:01 | 0:45:03
-Really. -You're continually pinching yourself. -Yeah. | 0:45:03 | 0:45:06
-So, a toast... -Cheers! -..to all of you - | 0:45:06 | 0:45:08
your final night in Africa. | 0:45:08 | 0:45:10
-Good luck tomorrow. -Cheers, guys. | 0:45:10 | 0:45:12
-Good luck tomorrow, guys. -Thank you very much. -Cheers. | 0:45:12 | 0:45:15
Their final day in Zambia - | 0:45:21 | 0:45:23
and on their global expedition. | 0:45:23 | 0:45:26
Here we go again. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:33
-Good luck. -Good luck, mate. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:35
-Good luck. -Good luck, guys. | 0:45:35 | 0:45:36
-See you later, boys. -Are you ready for this? -Yeah. | 0:45:36 | 0:45:39
Pressure's on today, man. | 0:45:39 | 0:45:40
Got to play catch-up. | 0:45:40 | 0:45:42
Just half a day remains to catch a tiger fish on all three methods... | 0:45:42 | 0:45:48
All right, let's do it. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
I really need to mix it up today with the fly and the lure, | 0:45:51 | 0:45:53
so I'll be using both. | 0:45:53 | 0:45:54
The other boys are probably going straight onto their bait, | 0:45:54 | 0:45:57
seeing as they caught with lure and fly already. | 0:45:57 | 0:45:59
What I'm going to do is double my chances, | 0:45:59 | 0:46:01
set up two rods. Both with bait. | 0:46:01 | 0:46:02
At the moment I'm just thinking about bait, bait, bait. | 0:46:02 | 0:46:05
..but the judges know it's going to be a close race... | 0:46:05 | 0:46:09
This is a crucial moment, really, | 0:46:09 | 0:46:11
and this is about finding the complete package. | 0:46:11 | 0:46:14
These three guys have fished their hearts out. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:18
We owe it to them to debate every cast, | 0:46:18 | 0:46:20
every fish to the nth degree, until we are satisfied | 0:46:20 | 0:46:24
that the person that we crown as champion is the best fisherman. | 0:46:24 | 0:46:28
-SAM: -I'm not panicking, | 0:46:28 | 0:46:30
just going to fish as best I can. | 0:46:30 | 0:46:33
A few months ago, | 0:46:33 | 0:46:34
I would have said bait fishing is my weakest out of the lot, | 0:46:34 | 0:46:37
but I do enjoy it, I know how to rig up... | 0:46:37 | 0:46:39
Yeah, just pushing the bait down, he is. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:41
That's his tactic this morning. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:43
We've tied up, James is drifting. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:45
You always want to keep a look | 0:46:45 | 0:46:46
and see what's happening with the rest of the guys. | 0:46:46 | 0:46:49
Dan looks like he's anchored up. | 0:46:49 | 0:46:51
You'll know when you've got a bite. | 0:46:52 | 0:46:55
Literally, you'll know when you've got a bite. | 0:46:55 | 0:46:58
That looks like a bite there. | 0:46:59 | 0:47:01
Obviously, sometimes, with the static bait, | 0:47:01 | 0:47:03
it's easier for the fish to home in on it, | 0:47:03 | 0:47:05
but you're covering a lot more fish here. | 0:47:05 | 0:47:06
..and it's not just James that Dan's keeping an eye on. | 0:47:06 | 0:47:09
With him spinning, I'd say he still hasn't had one on the lure, | 0:47:09 | 0:47:12
which, for me, is not a bad thing. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:14
The clock is ticking, and I know I'm doing everything right, you know. | 0:47:14 | 0:47:18
That's the frustrating thing - I'm in the right places, | 0:47:18 | 0:47:21
I'm landing that lure exactly where it needs to land. | 0:47:21 | 0:47:23
Sometimes you do these casts and you're like, | 0:47:23 | 0:47:26
"Oh, yeah, that deserves a fish." | 0:47:26 | 0:47:28
I kind of feel like I deserve a fish. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:29
I've fished so hard for two days now. | 0:47:29 | 0:47:31
Two hours gone. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:38
Heart is going ten to the dozen at the moment. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:44
Dan and James have just one method left to catch on - | 0:47:44 | 0:47:48
bait. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:50 | |
Yep. There's a tiger. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
He's coming up, this time. Are you ready? | 0:47:53 | 0:47:55
He's coming up. Whoa, whoa, whoa! | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
Oh, yes! | 0:48:01 | 0:48:03
Yes. | 0:48:03 | 0:48:05 | |
Oh, right, that's the hat trick done. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:07
Gorgeous fish - we'll get him straight back in the water, though. | 0:48:07 | 0:48:10
Yes! | 0:48:10 | 0:48:12 | |
Ohh! | 0:48:12 | 0:48:14 | |
The pressure just feels like it's gone. | 0:48:14 | 0:48:16
It's not over yet, though. | 0:48:18 | 0:48:19
So, they've got just under and hour to go. | 0:48:19 | 0:48:22
I can't imagine the pressure they must be under. | 0:48:22 | 0:48:24
James is obviously out on top right now. | 0:48:24 | 0:48:26
He's already caught his three fish, one on each technique. | 0:48:26 | 0:48:29
He's marched up that mountain, put his flag up there | 0:48:29 | 0:48:32
and said to the others, "OK, now come and get me." | 0:48:32 | 0:48:35
And then we've got Dan - still to catch one with bait, | 0:48:35 | 0:48:38
but nonetheless, he's still in there with a shout. | 0:48:38 | 0:48:40
And then we've got Sam - very methodical. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:42
He's been a really consistent performer | 0:48:42 | 0:48:45
through all the other rounds - | 0:48:45 | 0:48:46
however, the wheel's fallen off a little bit, | 0:48:46 | 0:48:49
and that happens in fishing, | 0:48:49 | 0:48:50
because sometimes you get the luck factor, | 0:48:50 | 0:48:53
or was it some bad decisions? | 0:48:53 | 0:48:54
Be under no illusions, he will fish till the very last second. | 0:48:54 | 0:48:58
This is still wide open. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:00
-SAM: -Still not hooking up. | 0:49:00 | 0:49:02
And that's just the way it is - I've got to keep casting. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:05
It's all I can do, really, is just keep doing what I'm doing. | 0:49:05 | 0:49:09
Sam is throwing everything he has into catching on the lure and fly. | 0:49:09 | 0:49:15
It's just that positive hook-up is all we need. | 0:49:15 | 0:49:18
Ooh! Might've been a tap. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:20
Here we go. Something's on. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:25
Yep. Yes! Ooh... | 0:49:25 | 0:49:27
It's a tiger on the lure. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:29
Oh, thank God for that! | 0:49:31 | 0:49:32
I worked so hard for that fish, and I knew I was doing everything right. | 0:49:32 | 0:49:36
I'm so, so relieved to have got one on the lure at last. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:39
Fantastic. I'm happy with that, I tell you. | 0:49:39 | 0:49:41
Right, let's get it back - I've got to get one on the fly, now. | 0:49:41 | 0:49:45
I'm on a level par with the boys when they left this morning. | 0:49:45 | 0:49:48
If I can take one on the fly as well, then... | 0:49:48 | 0:49:50
I think I'm still in with a good chance. | 0:49:50 | 0:49:53
Sam's now only one catch behind James - | 0:49:53 | 0:49:56
and he's not the only one. | 0:49:56 | 0:49:58
I'm going to do a bait fishing, but it's going to be free lining, | 0:49:58 | 0:50:02
where you just throw a bait over the side on a sinker | 0:50:02 | 0:50:04
and let that drift down with you. | 0:50:04 | 0:50:06
See if we can try and get a take that way. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:09
There's only 30 minutes left of the whole expedition. | 0:50:14 | 0:50:18
There's not long left. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:20
I keep thinking about the other guys, but then I think I'm just... | 0:50:20 | 0:50:23
I've done what I set out to do - I just wanted to top, | 0:50:23 | 0:50:26
and now I want to get more fish on the boat. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
Aware things could change in the blink of an eye, | 0:50:29 | 0:50:32
James is trying everything he can. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
I've put one of the bait rods down, left one out, | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
and I've put me spinner ordinary out again, | 0:50:36 | 0:50:39
just to try and get numbers on board. | 0:50:39 | 0:50:41
I'm hoping that, you know, | 0:50:41 | 0:50:42
maybe with a bigger chunk it'll sink down to the bottom a little bit. | 0:50:42 | 0:50:45
I haven't managed to catch on the bait fishing today. | 0:50:45 | 0:50:48
We'll see what happens now. | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
Had some action on the bait here yesterday - | 0:50:51 | 0:50:53
it's a nice little spot with a feeder stream - worth a try. | 0:50:53 | 0:50:55
At the moment, you know, time is the problem, | 0:50:55 | 0:50:58
we're down to the last 15 minutes, | 0:50:58 | 0:50:59
so just got to keep fishing hard and hope for that pull. | 0:50:59 | 0:51:02
Bait the trail up a little bit. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:03
Hopefully try and get something interested. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:06
I'm covering water - if there's a hook in the water, | 0:51:06 | 0:51:08
you've got a chance. Might get lucky, you never know. | 0:51:08 | 0:51:11
If I could pull a bit of last-minute luck out the bag, | 0:51:11 | 0:51:14
that'd be fantastic. | 0:51:14 | 0:51:15
Just need one bit of luck. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
Yeah, got a fish on here. | 0:51:21 | 0:51:22
True to form, | 0:51:23 | 0:51:24
Dan hooks up in the last few minutes. | 0:51:24 | 0:51:27
I think it's a catfish. | 0:51:27 | 0:51:29
It's a catfish. | 0:51:29 | 0:51:31
You know, it's the way it goes. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:33
But, you know, I also did catch on bait - | 0:51:33 | 0:51:34
so, I've caught on all three methods. | 0:51:34 | 0:51:36
Two minutes to go, got a bit of a tangle blowing up in the wind, here. | 0:51:36 | 0:51:40
There's no point in panicking. | 0:51:40 | 0:51:42
One last cast, fishermen! | 0:51:42 | 0:51:44
All this time's come down to this. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
Come on, guys. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:49
Come on! | 0:51:51 | 0:51:53
Three we go - that's it. | 0:51:53 | 0:51:56
That's the competition over. | 0:51:56 | 0:51:58
-Time's up. -Time is up. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:00
-All right. -Yeah, I'm sorry, man. | 0:52:00 | 0:52:02
What an epic, epic journey. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:03
One of us gets crowned champion - I hope it's me. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:06
You know, I've put my heart and soul into this. | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
The anglers' final test is over. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:13
Welcome back, anglers. | 0:52:22 | 0:52:24
-Hello. -How's it going? | 0:52:24 | 0:52:25
What a competition you made this, | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
with the efforts of the last two days. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:30
You can all be proud of making this a terrific final. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:32
It was an epic challenge, you know, for you, | 0:52:32 | 0:52:36
you know, for the past few days, so I say congratulations, guys. | 0:52:36 | 0:52:39
We asked for each of you to try and catch a tiger fish | 0:52:39 | 0:52:43
using the three different techniques. | 0:52:43 | 0:52:45
Sam, the fish that you caught were on lure and on bait, | 0:52:45 | 0:52:49
and they were very nice fish. | 0:52:49 | 0:52:51
It's just the fly-caught fish that prevented the perfect sheet - | 0:52:51 | 0:52:55
but nonetheless, it was a fair old effort. | 0:52:55 | 0:52:58
Thank you, Matt. Cheers. | 0:52:58 | 0:52:59
James, you went out there and you did it. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:02
Fly, spinner and bait. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:04
The fish that you caught on the fly was not far off eight pounds, | 0:53:04 | 0:53:08
and that's a belting tiger fish. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:10
I'm actually quite jealous. | 0:53:10 | 0:53:12
Boyhood dream, mate. | 0:53:12 | 0:53:13
Dan, you scored very early with a fly-caught tiger fish. | 0:53:13 | 0:53:17
-It wasn't a big tiger fish... -No. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
..but it was a tiger fish on the fly. | 0:53:19 | 0:53:21
You had a nice two pound-plusser, on a lure - | 0:53:21 | 0:53:24
-unfortunately, the fish you caught on a bait was a catfish. -Yeah. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:28
That's a shame. | 0:53:28 | 0:53:29
Well done, anglers. | 0:53:29 | 0:53:30
I really know how much effort you put into this - | 0:53:30 | 0:53:33
but the judges wanted the angler | 0:53:33 | 0:53:35
who could perform in all three techniques, | 0:53:35 | 0:53:38
so the winner of this last challenge here is James. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:42
-Eventually. -Well done. | 0:53:42 | 0:53:43
-Cheers, guys. -Congratulations. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:44
You've done an amazing, amazing job, guys. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:46
-We'll return shortly. -Thank you very much. | 0:53:46 | 0:53:48
-Cheers, guys. -Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:53:48 | 0:53:50
What a few days it's been out here! | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
Three very different challenges, and each of them has a win. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:08
It's been an incredible final. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:10
It's got everything we need in it. | 0:54:10 | 0:54:12
All the fishing skills have been on show, | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
and we've got a really hard choice to make - | 0:54:14 | 0:54:17
but we have enough information to make that choice. | 0:54:17 | 0:54:20
Charles, what about Dan, then? | 0:54:20 | 0:54:22
On the vundu challenge, he caught a five-pounder catfish, | 0:54:22 | 0:54:26
and for the second day, he caught some small, small tilapia. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:31
But I actually think he was fishing a very pure, stealthy technique. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:35
I think it's every bit as good as catching a big vundu. | 0:54:35 | 0:54:39
And then, of course, on Dan's third and final challenge, | 0:54:39 | 0:54:41
he caught fish - not necessarily the fish we wanted him to catch. | 0:54:41 | 0:54:46
Unfortunately, a vundu catfish came in on bait. | 0:54:46 | 0:54:48
On the fly rod, he managed to land, you know, a tiger fish, | 0:54:48 | 0:54:53
but that was, you know, about one-pounder. | 0:54:53 | 0:54:55
But it was on the fly rod - | 0:54:55 | 0:54:57
you're always impressed catching them on the fly rod. | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59
I was impressed, but, you know, I'm trying to look | 0:54:59 | 0:55:04
and maybe make the judgment. | 0:55:04 | 0:55:06
James, you know, for the first day, he didn't land any vundu at all. | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
Then, when we went to the village, the second day, | 0:55:10 | 0:55:13
he landed, you know, some decent fish. | 0:55:13 | 0:55:15
He did start quite slowly, but then all of a sudden, | 0:55:15 | 0:55:17
when he gets to the two-day event, | 0:55:17 | 0:55:19
he puts in a meteorically strong performance at the end. | 0:55:19 | 0:55:22
He managed to land that big tiger fish - eight-pounder - | 0:55:22 | 0:55:26
on a fly, you know. | 0:55:26 | 0:55:27
It's something which, you know, it makes me proud. | 0:55:27 | 0:55:31
Sam came into this week, Mr Consistent - | 0:55:31 | 0:55:33
won the first challenge. | 0:55:33 | 0:55:35
Yes, 17.5-pound vundu - it was the biggest fish by a mile. | 0:55:35 | 0:55:39
And then what about with the local challenge? | 0:55:39 | 0:55:42
He landed a decent, you know, tilapia, and also a small one. | 0:55:42 | 0:55:45
It wasn't so bad. | 0:55:45 | 0:55:47
And then we come into the third challenge - failed on the fly. | 0:55:47 | 0:55:50
-Bit of an -Achilles -heel. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:51
Three great contenders - | 0:55:51 | 0:55:53
none of them should reproach themselves for what they've done. | 0:55:53 | 0:55:56
They have given it their all. | 0:55:56 | 0:55:58
What a journey we've all been on! | 0:56:20 | 0:56:22
It began all those weeks ago in the rain and hail of Iceland, | 0:56:22 | 0:56:27
and it finishes here on the banks of the Zambezi under the African sun. | 0:56:27 | 0:56:32
Our judges had a really, really tough decision. | 0:56:32 | 0:56:36
They haven't taken it lightly, | 0:56:36 | 0:56:39
but based on this incredible week's fishing here in Zambia, | 0:56:39 | 0:56:44
the winner of our worldwide fishing adventure... | 0:56:44 | 0:56:51
is... | 0:56:51 | 0:56:52 | |
-..James. -Yes! -Well done, sir. -Well done. | 0:57:05 | 0:57:08
Well done, well done. | 0:57:08 | 0:57:10
-How do you feel? -Shocked. -Well done. | 0:57:10 | 0:57:13
-Extremely well done. -Thank you. -Congratulations. -Thank you. | 0:57:13 | 0:57:16
Well done. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:17
The champion - hold it up! | 0:57:17 | 0:57:19
THEY LAUGH | 0:57:19 | 0:57:21
Crying like a big baby! | 0:57:21 | 0:57:24
Oh-h! | 0:57:24 | 0:57:26 | |
Still trying to take it all in. | 0:57:26 | 0:57:27
I'm lost for words. | 0:57:29 | 0:57:30
I can't believe it. | 0:57:33 | 0:57:36
CORK POPS | 0:57:36 | 0:57:37
Whoo-hoo! | 0:57:37 | 0:57:38
-Here's to an incredible experience. -Cheers! | 0:57:38 | 0:57:41
I was close, but no cigar - | 0:57:41 | 0:57:43
but I'm really, really pleased for James. | 0:57:43 | 0:57:45
He's a good guy. Good, good guy. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:47
He's become a very, very good friend of mine. | 0:57:47 | 0:57:49
Cheers, champ! Nicely done. | 0:57:49 | 0:57:52
Being given this fantastic opportunity | 0:57:52 | 0:57:54
to come and see all these amazing places, | 0:57:54 | 0:57:56
and to experience the things we have, | 0:57:56 | 0:57:58
that's it - really, really lucky bloke. | 0:57:58 | 0:58:01
I've always loved fishing, but taking part in this, | 0:58:01 | 0:58:04
it just grabs hold of you, | 0:58:04 | 0:58:06
and reminds you of what fishing is about. | 0:58:06 | 0:58:08
Taking part, making friends, | 0:58:08 | 0:58:10
experiencing things like we've gone through - | 0:58:10 | 0:58:13
it's been one hell of a journey, | 0:58:13 | 0:58:15
but it's something I'll remember for the rest of my life. | 0:58:15 | 0:58:18
-Well done, mate. -Yeah, well done. -Cheers! | 0:58:24 | 0:58:26
Really pleased for you, dude. | 0:58:26 | 0:58:27 |
