The jaguar.

0:00:170:00:19

South America's most powerful, yet secretive, big cat.

0:00:190:00:25

Every single time I see a jaguar, it's kind of magical.

0:00:300:00:35

When people come here, what they really want to see is the jaguar.

0:00:420:00:46

So how do you get to know one of the world's most elusive animals?

0:00:480:00:52

In Brazil, a pioneering team is attempting to do just that.

0:00:540:00:59

And they're starting to reveal unique insights into their lives.

0:01:010:01:06

But now, Brazil's jaguars are under pressure.

0:01:160:01:19

Their world is colliding with ours.

0:01:210:01:24

In an urgent effort to help,

0:01:300:01:32

the team must try to teach two rescued orphans to live in the wild.

0:01:320:01:38

I'm struggling to believe that we're actually doing this.

0:01:470:01:50

This is unique. In Brazil, nobody has ever done this before.

0:01:530:01:57

To succeed, they will need to get closer to Brazil's

0:02:000:02:04

top predators than anyone before.

0:02:040:02:07

Away from Rio and Brazil's bustling cities,

0:02:220:02:25

there is a truly wild country.

0:02:250:02:28

At its heart lies the world's greatest wetland - the Pantanal.

0:02:340:02:40

Each year, seasonal rains create a haven for wildlife,

0:02:470:02:51

covering over 70,000 square miles.

0:02:510:02:54

The jaguar is the top predator here.

0:03:050:03:08

They're renowned for their hunting skill.

0:03:240:03:27

Jaguars stalk and ambush prey,

0:03:300:03:33

ranging from large deer to capybara.

0:03:330:03:37

Unlike most cats, they'll even catch and kill their quarry in the water.

0:03:450:03:50

But the Pantanal is no pristine wilderness.

0:03:570:04:00

Over 90% is privately owned.

0:04:020:04:05

Cattle ranching is big business.

0:04:070:04:10

And for jaguars, cattle are easy prey.

0:04:140:04:18

Conflict between these cats and local ranchers

0:04:240:04:27

is a real threat to the jaguar's future.

0:04:270:04:30

And with Brazil's urban population growing, there's a new problem.

0:04:350:04:39

Cities are spreading into the wetlands...

0:04:440:04:47

..which means that jaguars are being pushed into our world.

0:04:500:04:54

Dr Rogerio Cunha is from the carnivore research

0:05:060:05:09

and conservation team of the Brazilian government.

0:05:090:05:13

He is investigating an extraordinary incident,

0:05:210:05:24

where two young cubs and their mother ended up in the city.

0:05:240:05:29

This is the exact location where the accident happened.

0:05:430:05:46

This is all floating, it had water all over the place.

0:05:510:05:55

And the jaguar came.

0:05:580:06:00

She brought one cub, then went back to the other side of the river,

0:06:000:06:04

brought the other cub.

0:06:040:06:06

Water everywhere, so she climbed this tree with the two cubs.

0:06:080:06:11

So she was very tired.

0:06:120:06:14

And then people start coming so there was a big, big crowd.

0:06:160:06:20

The female had rescued the cubs from the rising flood,

0:06:230:06:27

but with so many people around, the local authorities had to act.

0:06:270:06:32

They decided to dart her with anaesthetic so they could move her.

0:06:350:06:40

But it didn't go to plan.

0:06:400:06:42

She fell from the tree into the water below.

0:06:440:06:47

The rescue team tried desperately to revive her, but she was beyond help.

0:06:540:07:00

Apparently, it was too late for the mother.

0:07:000:07:04

She was dead.

0:07:070:07:08

And her cubs, two little sisters,

0:07:110:07:14

were too young to survive without her.

0:07:140:07:17

What could we do about those two cubs?

0:07:190:07:22

They're very young, they're very vulnerable.

0:07:220:07:25

They're orphans already.

0:07:250:07:27

The cubs' situation highlights the problems facing Brazil's jaguars.

0:07:310:07:37

Brazil has more jaguars than anywhere else on Earth,

0:07:400:07:43

but the populations are fragmented

0:07:430:07:45

and scattered through this vast country.

0:07:450:07:48

Each year, as they lose natural habitat,

0:07:520:07:55

their numbers are dropping.

0:07:550:07:57

The jaguars in Pantanal are classed as vulnerable

0:08:000:08:04

but populations in the north-east and in the coastal rainforests

0:08:040:08:08

are critically endangered.

0:08:080:08:10

In Brazil, every jaguar counts.

0:08:130:08:16

The two orphaned cubs are now nine months old.

0:08:240:08:28

With only each other for company, they formed a close bond.

0:08:380:08:43

They're fit and healthy, and could help bolster wild populations.

0:08:490:08:54

But jaguars have never been successfully returned to the wild.

0:08:570:09:01

Rogerio wants to do the impossible

0:09:040:09:06

and try and get them back to the wild.

0:09:060:09:10

He knows of a pioneering new project in southern Pantanal,

0:09:100:09:14

which might be the lifeline these cubs need.

0:09:140:09:17

The jaguar's secretive nature means much of their lives are a mystery.

0:09:260:09:31

But one team is changing all of that.

0:09:330:09:35

The Oncafari Project

0:09:370:09:39

is coordinated by a field biologist, Lilian Rampim...

0:09:390:09:44

..and co-founded by Mario Haberfeld.

0:09:470:09:50

They've been following a group of wild jaguars,

0:09:520:09:55

and seen things completely new to science.

0:09:550:09:59

SHE SPEAKS PORTUGUESE

0:09:590:10:01

Including these surprising shots.

0:10:020:10:06

We don't know exactly why the jaguars use this tree,

0:10:090:10:12

but we believe that it's like a territory, actually,

0:10:120:10:16

because they came, they mark everything, they smell everything.

0:10:160:10:20

And they chew it a little bit, and then they climb down.

0:10:270:10:31

So I guess it's just an expansion of their territories.

0:10:310:10:34

The team are getting to know individual jaguars...

0:10:380:10:42

..and following them more intimately than ever before.

0:10:470:10:51

They're the first people to get cameras into a wild den.

0:11:010:11:05

Revealing astonishing views of six-day-old cubs.

0:11:100:11:14

They've seen that female jaguars are particularly diligent parents.

0:11:230:11:27

And discovered that the jaguar cubs here seem to have

0:11:350:11:39

a very high survival rate compared to other big cats.

0:11:390:11:43

Getting these extraordinary insights is a remarkable achievement.

0:11:530:11:57

This new-found knowledge will be essential for trying to return

0:12:030:12:07

the orphaned sisters to the wild.

0:12:070:12:09

Tonight, Lili and the team are heading out on an important mission.

0:12:150:12:19

They want to fit key jaguars with the latest radio collars

0:12:220:12:26

to track them more closely.

0:12:260:12:28

But first, they need to catch a cat.

0:12:290:12:33

THUNDER

0:12:330:12:35

They've laid foothold snares on jaguar trails and kills in the area.

0:12:370:12:43

And one has been activated.

0:12:460:12:48

For the team to get close, it needs to be sedated.

0:13:030:13:07

It's a large adult...

0:13:110:13:13

GUNSHOT ..and they recognise her.

0:13:150:13:17

It's Esperanza and this is great news for the team.

0:13:200:13:24

At eight years old, she is an experienced and successful cat,

0:13:270:13:31

who has raised several cubs.

0:13:310:13:34

It's an ideal chance to find out more

0:13:360:13:38

about the life of a wild jaguar.

0:13:380:13:41

There's just 30 minutes to fit her collar.

0:13:490:13:52

We are putting radio collars on these cats

0:13:560:13:59

because it's a really good way to follow them.

0:13:590:14:01

The collar is not a problem for a jaguar, they're quite light.

0:14:030:14:06

The jaguar's 100kg.

0:14:060:14:09

The collar weighs less than 1kg.

0:14:090:14:12

It's not the greatest technology,

0:14:140:14:16

but it's really, really efficient technology.

0:14:160:14:19

First, Esperanza gets a full health check.

0:14:230:14:27

Jaguars have the most powerful bite of any big cat.

0:14:340:14:37

One of her canines is broken.

0:14:390:14:41

It probably happened during a hunt.

0:14:410:14:43

The team vet has also noticed something very exciting -

0:14:470:14:51

an indication that she might be pregnant or even nursing cubs.

0:14:510:14:55

After only 20 minutes,

0:15:010:15:03

the anaesthetic is starting to wear off.

0:15:030:15:06

95kg of big cat is about to wake up.

0:15:110:15:15

JAGUAR GRUNTS

0:15:170:15:19

She's so strong that her body is fighting the drugs.

0:15:370:15:41

The collar will drop off after a year or so.

0:15:570:16:00

But before it does,

0:16:020:16:04

they will be able to follow Esperanza closely, hoping to

0:16:040:16:08

gather important new information, especially if she does have cubs.

0:16:080:16:12

The orphaned sisters from Corumba are now 16 months old.

0:16:370:16:41

The attempt to return them to the wild must start now.

0:16:430:16:47

Any older, and they'll become too reliant on being in captivity.

0:16:470:16:50

So Rogerio, Lili and the team have joined forces,

0:16:530:16:58

and they have an ambitious plan.

0:16:580:17:00

They're Pantanal jaguars, so if you're releasing them,

0:17:050:17:09

it would have to be in Pantanal.

0:17:090:17:11

Taking advantage of the dry season,

0:17:150:17:18

they're constructing a special enclosure, deep in the Pantanal.

0:17:180:17:23

The aim is to give them a taste of the wild

0:17:310:17:34

while they're still being looked after.

0:17:340:17:37

When you have an enclosure in the middle of this natural environment,

0:17:410:17:45

they have access to everything,

0:17:450:17:47

all kind of smells, prey and other jaguars.

0:17:470:17:50

The fencing needs to keep the orphaned sisters in

0:17:540:17:58

and wild jaguars out.

0:17:580:18:00

I definitely think that other jaguars will be very curious,

0:18:050:18:09

because it will be two different jaguars,

0:18:090:18:11

two different smells, new chemistry.

0:18:110:18:15

They will come to check, definitely.

0:18:150:18:17

Especially the males.

0:18:170:18:19

To stand a chance of success,

0:18:200:18:22

the team need to keep human contact to an absolute minimum.

0:18:220:18:27

They can't enter the enclosure once the cubs arrive.

0:18:290:18:32

Remote cameras will be vital to monitor how the orphans

0:18:330:18:37

progress over the coming year.

0:18:370:18:39

It's taken three months but at last the enclosure is ready.

0:18:440:18:49

The two orphans don't know it yet,

0:19:060:19:08

but their lives are about to change forever.

0:19:080:19:11

They have a nearly 20-hour drive ahead of them.

0:19:160:19:19

But first, there's a health check to pass,

0:19:200:19:23

and for that, they need to be tranquillised.

0:19:230:19:26

It's a good chance for Rogerio to see how they're doing.

0:19:370:19:40

A jaguar's teeth are the best indication of its age and health.

0:19:430:19:47

She's in great shape, great shape.

0:19:490:19:52

Meanwhile, Lili is making final checks to the enclosure.

0:20:150:20:20

I'm just thinking about the construction, if we miss something.

0:20:220:20:26

But I guess not. We always will feel like that, you know,

0:20:260:20:29

we always will feel that we miss something.

0:20:290:20:31

But, actually, we are ready.

0:20:330:20:35

As their journey starts, these two jaguars have suddenly changed

0:20:410:20:45

from being two lonely orphans

0:20:450:20:48

to becoming two of the most important big cats on the continent.

0:20:480:20:52

If this reintroduction works,

0:21:020:21:05

Rogerio knows it could be key to helping jaguars all across Brazil,

0:21:050:21:09

especially in areas where they're most under threat.

0:21:090:21:13

This experiment that we're doing here, it's going to teach us

0:21:150:21:19

how to rehabilitate cubs in order to release back in the wild.

0:21:190:21:26

And one of our goals is to learn this, to try and do this in

0:21:270:21:32

an authentic forest that the jaguars are extremely endangered.

0:21:320:21:38

They are very, very...

0:21:380:21:40

..few animals.

0:21:420:21:44

So by doing this, we could actually help the entire forest population.

0:21:440:21:50

The future of many other jaguars is now riding with these two sisters.

0:21:510:21:56

We made it! Yay!

0:22:350:22:38

After 1,240km

0:22:420:22:47

and 19 hours on the road,

0:22:470:22:50

we're exhausted.

0:22:500:22:51

Perhaps we're not as exhausted as the jaguars there,

0:22:520:22:56

shaking in the back of the van.

0:22:560:23:00

But we're all very happy

0:23:000:23:02

that we brought them finally to their new home.

0:23:020:23:07

They're coming.

0:23:070:23:09

This is the first time Lili has seen the orphans

0:23:190:23:22

she will care for over the next year.

0:23:220:23:24

I'm watching a jaguar crazy to leave this cage.

0:23:260:23:29

She is responding very well to the boys.

0:23:300:23:34

Aggressive.

0:23:340:23:35

They're pretty. They're so beautiful, jaguars.

0:23:440:23:47

Lili is determined to give these youngsters the very best

0:23:500:23:54

chance of a new life in the wild.

0:23:540:23:57

It's unfair for them.

0:24:010:24:03

They lose their mum so soon.

0:24:030:24:05

And it will be unfair on them to die in captivity.

0:24:070:24:10

They deserve to have a good life.

0:24:120:24:15

Their loss is something that Lili herself can relate to.

0:24:220:24:27

Unfortunately, this year, I had the same experience

0:24:270:24:30

that the jaguars did, losing their mum really soon,

0:24:300:24:33

and this year, I lost my mum as well.

0:24:330:24:36

And, for me, it's quite easy to understand right now what's

0:24:360:24:41

not having your mum around.

0:24:410:24:43

I am really lucky because my mum raised me.

0:24:510:24:54

They didn't have this opportunity to be with mum and learn.

0:24:550:24:59

And now they're suffering. They suffer every day.

0:25:010:25:04

So it's a really special project for me right now,

0:25:110:25:14

because I know the way that they're feeling.

0:25:140:25:17

Releasing them into the enclosure is a very special moment for them all.

0:25:270:25:32

SHE WHISPERS IN PORTUGUESE

0:25:370:25:39

The bigger and bolder sister

0:25:470:25:50

is the first to step into this strange, new world.

0:25:500:25:54

This is awesome.

0:26:120:26:14

To see them coming out...

0:26:140:26:16

..I have no words to say.

0:26:180:26:19

But it's so nice to see the two sisters exploring the new home,

0:26:300:26:35

very nice, very nice.

0:26:350:26:38

The orphans are back in the Pantanal, where they were born.

0:26:420:26:47

But there's months of work ahead

0:26:470:26:49

before they're ready for life in the wild.

0:26:490:26:52

THEY SPEAK PORTUGUESE

0:26:520:26:54

Now it's their turn.

0:26:560:26:57

Now it's the hard job.

0:26:590:27:00

No-one knows if this will work.

0:27:050:27:07

But at least now they have a chance.

0:27:070:27:10

The team will need to use everything they've discovered about jaguars

0:27:100:27:14

to try and help the orphans become truly wild cats.

0:27:140:27:19

As the orphans settle in,

0:27:310:27:33

the team turn their attention to another project.

0:27:330:27:36

They've had an innovative idea to see if they can get wild jaguars

0:27:400:27:45

to accept the presence of people and cars.

0:27:450:27:49

This is the first time where jaguars

0:27:540:27:57

are being habituated in Brazil to vehicles.

0:27:570:28:00

It's actually an old technique where they use in South Africa.

0:28:010:28:05

We adapt it to jaguars.

0:28:090:28:11

We adapt it to Pantanal.

0:28:110:28:14

They want tourists to come and see the jaguars,

0:28:140:28:17

giving them an economic value to the people who live here.

0:28:170:28:21

But basing a business on a notoriously elusive predator

0:28:210:28:25

seems, well, verging on the impossible.

0:28:250:28:28

They will need to work closely with individual cats

0:28:340:28:37

so collared females like Esperanza are key to the project.

0:28:370:28:42

Three months after her capture, they discover she's no longer alone.

0:28:460:28:52

Tucked against her side are two small cubs.

0:29:010:29:04

That night was really special.

0:29:100:29:12

We thought that she was going to be alone,

0:29:120:29:14

because we saw her a couple of times and she was always by herself.

0:29:140:29:18

So we weren't expecting two little cubs, all happy and jumping.

0:29:180:29:23

We were quite close, it was 20 metres away.

0:29:360:29:39

They were with their mum, the two tiny cubs.

0:29:410:29:45

At the time, we didn't know if they were male or female,

0:29:460:29:50

it was just two cubs, happy cubs.

0:29:500:29:52

Esperanza seems incredibly relaxed to have the team so close by.

0:29:540:29:58

She was laying down, they were starting to suck the milk,

0:30:000:30:04

until they fall asleep.

0:30:040:30:06

It's the sign to Lili and the team

0:30:160:30:19

that their plan to habituate wild jaguars might just work.

0:30:190:30:24

When they're old enough, Esperanza will teach her cubs to hunt.

0:30:440:30:48

But the two orphans don't have a mother to teach them.

0:30:510:30:54

And they won't survive unless they can catch prey by themselves.

0:30:590:31:03

So the team have to make a tough decision.

0:31:080:31:11

The project has been granted special licences

0:31:140:31:17

to capture wild prey for the orphans

0:31:170:31:20

but it doesn't make the job of feeding them any more comfortable.

0:31:200:31:24

To capture a live animal and offer it to these jaguars,

0:31:240:31:28

it's not the happiest job ever, obviously.

0:31:280:31:30

You need to face some demons to do this,

0:31:330:31:35

because you are responsible to finish their lives.

0:31:350:31:38

The reality is that the jaguars can't be released

0:31:400:31:43

unless they can fend for themselves.

0:31:430:31:47

It's the only way.

0:31:470:31:48

If I offered dead chicken or just a piece of meat,

0:31:500:31:53

they'll never understand that this animal over there means food.

0:31:530:31:58

If you're not offering live prey,

0:32:030:32:05

the chance of this whole project works is zero.

0:32:050:32:08

The sisters reveal their hunting instinct,

0:32:170:32:21

catching their own meal for the very first time.

0:32:210:32:23

It's a very huge step forward on their journey back to the wild.

0:32:250:32:29

The team believe jaguars prefer wild prey

0:32:380:32:42

but there's no denying that they also kill cattle.

0:32:420:32:45

This is Esperanza's territory.

0:32:520:32:55

And Lili's colleague, Leo, finds some intriguing evidence.

0:32:570:33:02

We have two marks.

0:33:020:33:04

The mum...

0:33:040:33:06

..and the little marks...

0:33:080:33:10

..the cubs.

0:33:110:33:12

Keen to see how they're doing,

0:33:270:33:29

they stake out the kill and wait for nightfall.

0:33:290:33:32

Slipping from the shadows, the family appear.

0:33:430:33:46

Once again, the jaguars allow the team to remain close by.

0:34:060:34:11

Now they can see first-hand

0:34:120:34:15

how an experienced mother teaches her cubs.

0:34:150:34:18

At six months old, the cubs are weaning.

0:34:220:34:26

Esperanza shows them what to do, but then she leaves them alone.

0:34:300:34:34

They must learn to work out things for themselves

0:34:370:34:39

to become independent.

0:34:390:34:41

Now, they just need to get on top of the situation.

0:34:440:34:47

The fact that jaguars kill cattle

0:34:580:35:00

is the greatest threat to their future here.

0:35:000:35:04

It's given these big cats a very bad reputation

0:35:060:35:09

with the people who work the land.

0:35:090:35:11

HE SHOUTS

0:35:110:35:15

Cattle ranching is one of the oldest industries of Pantanal.

0:35:150:35:19

Four million cattle are grazed across the region.

0:35:210:35:24

In some ways, cattle are Pantanal's saviour.

0:35:280:35:32

Ranching has stopped the land from being developed.

0:35:320:35:35

Killing jaguars here is illegal...

0:35:390:35:42

..but living alongside the predatory big cat isn't easy.

0:35:440:35:48

This ranch has stamped out hunting jaguars,

0:36:020:36:05

but, elsewhere in the region, it still goes on.

0:36:050:36:08

Reducing the conflict and changing attitudes towards these cats

0:36:390:36:43

is crucial for their future.

0:36:430:36:45

We need to find a way for farmers to understand that

0:36:470:36:51

you can have cows and jaguars in your property.

0:36:510:36:54

So we are showing them that the jaguar

0:36:590:37:01

is much more valuable alive than dead.

0:37:010:37:04

This is why the habituation plan is so important.

0:37:080:37:11

An ecotourism industry would show everyone here

0:37:130:37:16

that jaguars do have a value.

0:37:160:37:18

So far, the team's pioneering projects are going well,

0:37:230:37:27

but Pantanal is about to unleash a new challenge.

0:37:270:37:31

THUNDER ROLLS

0:37:370:37:40

The wet season breathes new life into the land.

0:37:420:37:46

But 80% of this vast wetland floods every year,

0:38:020:38:07

so following wild jaguars like Esperanza

0:38:070:38:10

becomes a lot more difficult.

0:38:100:38:13

This wet season is such a blessing to the environment,

0:38:180:38:23

to the jaguars, to all of the animals in the Pantanal.

0:38:230:38:26

And it's beautiful.

0:38:280:38:30

It's amazing to be here and see this landscape.

0:38:300:38:35

But, at the same time, it's awful for us...

0:38:370:38:41

cos it gets really more hard to find them.

0:38:410:38:45

And once you find them, through the GPS collar,

0:38:460:38:50

it's really hard to reach them and sometimes it's just impossible.

0:38:500:38:54

While the team try and find and habituate the wild jaguars here,

0:39:000:39:05

they are doing the exact opposite with the orphans...

0:39:050:39:08

and teaching them to become more elusive.

0:39:080:39:11

And, after seven months back in the Pantanal,

0:39:210:39:24

Lili is pleased with their progress.

0:39:240:39:27

The last time that I saw the jaguars was...

0:39:290:39:33

..seven days ago. Seven days ago.

0:39:340:39:37

They're healthy, bigger, with more muscle,

0:39:410:39:45

less belly.

0:39:450:39:47

Healthy, healthy jaguars, crazy to get out of here.

0:39:490:39:52

But they're not yet ready for life in the wild.

0:39:550:39:59

They need to prove that they can tackle

0:39:590:40:01

the most difficult prey of all.

0:40:010:40:03

A male capybara might look docile,

0:40:090:40:12

but they're expert swimmers with razor-sharp teeth.

0:40:120:40:15

This is one of the toughest quarries for any jaguar

0:40:170:40:21

and they must prove they can catch one.

0:40:210:40:23

-WHISPERING:

-The capybara is keeping really,

0:40:320:40:34

really still and that's the problem.

0:40:340:40:37

There's no sound, so the jaguars, they don't realise...

0:40:370:40:42

that there's a capybara over there.

0:40:420:40:44

The jaguars are now so secretive that the only way to see how

0:40:470:40:51

they hunt is with remote cameras.

0:40:510:40:54

We can see that the sisters are really, really different...

0:41:170:41:21

especially when it's the hunting time.

0:41:210:41:24

They show us that one is much more dominant,

0:41:240:41:28

she goes for it,

0:41:280:41:30

and the other one is more cautious.

0:41:300:41:32

But you can see that she is trying as well.

0:41:360:41:38

She's not laying down, looking to the sister to do all the jobs.

0:41:380:41:41

She's swimming, she's chasing the capybara.

0:41:410:41:45

They've never known life apart from one another

0:41:470:41:49

and seem to be figuring it out together.

0:41:490:41:52

They're helping each other, but obviously you can see that one

0:41:560:42:00

is much more dominant than the other.

0:42:000:42:02

They are still learning.

0:42:090:42:10

They didn't have their mum around to teach them.

0:42:100:42:13

It's not an easy position. They are becoming jaguars.

0:42:200:42:24

They are learning that.

0:42:260:42:28

Working as a team, they've passed this critical test,

0:42:380:42:43

but it's clear that one is a better hunter,

0:42:430:42:46

leaving the other to follow her lead.

0:42:460:42:49

They both need to be able to fend for themselves

0:42:500:42:54

if they are to survive in the wild.

0:42:540:42:56

Although the land is still inaccessible,

0:43:040:43:07

the team turn to the tree cameras

0:43:070:43:09

to see how Esperanza and her cubs are getting on.

0:43:090:43:13

At ten months old, the cubs are growing up fast.

0:43:210:43:24

Within the year, they will leave their mother

0:43:300:43:33

and they will have to be well-prepared.

0:43:330:43:36

They're not independent, but Esperanza taught them everything -

0:43:490:43:53

where to find food, where to live.

0:43:530:43:56

So I believe that, when these cubs leave the presence of the mum,

0:43:590:44:04

they will be just fine.

0:44:040:44:06

With such an attentive and experienced mother,

0:44:130:44:15

they're getting the best possible start in life.

0:44:150:44:19

As the wet season draws to a close, the team have made a decision -

0:44:290:44:34

the orphans will get their chance to live in the wild.

0:44:340:44:38

They need a final health check

0:44:410:44:43

and tracking collars to monitor their movements.

0:44:430:44:47

Fresh meat is used to lure them into the cells.

0:44:500:44:53

Then they back off and leave the jaguars alone for the night.

0:44:530:44:58

The next morning, there is worrying news.

0:45:160:45:19

One of the cats has injured itself.

0:45:190:45:22

It's an anxious wait until they can go and help.

0:45:240:45:28

-WHISPERING:

-I think it's going to be fine. It's just a matter of time.

0:45:280:45:32

But this waiting...

0:45:360:45:37

is killing me.

0:45:370:45:39

During the night, the bolder sister fought to get free and hurt

0:45:420:45:46

herself on the bars of the cage.

0:45:460:45:49

'They are so strong and they are so confident that they think,'

0:45:500:45:54

in their mind, they think that they're going to break the bar.

0:45:540:45:57

CHATTER

0:45:570:46:00

So they put - grr -

0:46:000:46:02

they are really, really strong and it's doing that...

0:46:020:46:06

happens to broke the teeth.

0:46:060:46:08

CHATTER

0:46:090:46:11

In a way, I guess it was better to happen with this one compared

0:46:120:46:17

to the other one...

0:46:170:46:19

because this one hunts so much better.

0:46:190:46:22

It is bad but I guess, in my opinion, could be worse

0:46:240:46:27

if it happens with the other one.

0:46:270:46:30

CHATTER

0:46:300:46:33

Esperanza has shown that a jaguar can still make a kill

0:46:330:46:37

with a broken tooth...

0:46:370:46:39

..but the smaller sister is showing signs

0:46:400:46:43

that she has had problems hunting.

0:46:430:46:45

These injuries are from difficult prey animals.

0:46:460:46:51

She's clearly struggled to take them down.

0:46:510:46:53

Despite these setbacks, the orphans are given a clean bill of health

0:46:570:47:01

and left to recover.

0:47:010:47:04

They have a final month in the enclosure to get used to the collars

0:47:100:47:15

before a very big step into the unknown.

0:47:150:47:19

The day has arrived.

0:47:470:47:49

After a difficult start in life, they're about to get their freedom.

0:47:510:47:56

Everything that Lili, Rogerio and the team have done

0:48:050:48:09

has built to this.

0:48:090:48:11

That moment of pulling up the cable...

0:48:120:48:16

..it was very, very...

0:48:180:48:20

I wouldn't say emotional, but a very strong moment, you know?

0:48:220:48:25

It's just like...

0:48:250:48:27

It's now.

0:48:270:48:28

Let's go. It's open now.

0:48:340:48:36

Now it's up to them.

0:48:360:48:37

I don't know how to describe this feeling.

0:48:390:48:42

I don't have words, actually.

0:48:420:48:43

I am struggling to believe that we are actually doing this, you know?

0:48:430:48:47

This is... This is unique in Brazil.

0:48:470:48:48

Nobody has ever done this before, so it's a huge responsibility.

0:48:480:48:52

We did our part outside, they did their best inside,

0:48:520:48:57

and what else we can do?

0:48:570:48:59

We just opened the door, my friend.

0:49:000:49:03

Yes, we did. We did open it.

0:49:030:49:05

We did open the door.

0:49:050:49:06

Any moment from now, they just can walk away.

0:49:060:49:09

-They have their life back.

-It's amazing.

0:49:100:49:14

I believe that both of them are going to live, I truly believe.

0:49:140:49:18

We underestimate nature.

0:49:180:49:20

We are always trying to protect them, protect them

0:49:200:49:22

and they just don't need that.

0:49:220:49:25

Good luck, girls.

0:49:250:49:26

They should be fine.

0:49:260:49:28

We need to trust on them, we need to believe them

0:49:280:49:31

and we need to believe that they're going to be fine.

0:49:310:49:34

Now to wait and hope that all the work they've done will pay off.

0:49:350:49:41

The remote cameras and data from their tracking collars

0:49:450:49:49

will reveal what happens next.

0:49:490:49:51

In the morning, the team gather,

0:50:130:50:15

anxious to see if the orphans have left the enclosure.

0:50:150:50:18

The first satellite points come in,

0:50:220:50:25

revealing where they are.

0:50:250:50:27

Oh!

0:50:270:50:29

Woo!

0:50:290:50:30

THEY SPEAK IN PORTUGESE

0:50:300:50:35

They're gone. They're gone.

0:50:350:50:37

-They're gone.

-They're by their own now.

0:50:370:50:40

We open the enclosure, we left the place

0:50:400:50:43

and they're gone...

0:50:430:50:44

You know? Just like that.

0:50:440:50:46

It was really fast.

0:50:460:50:47

The most interesting thing, when you look at the cameras,

0:50:530:50:58

the little sister came out to explore first...

0:50:580:51:01

..and she came out, like, without second thoughts.

0:51:030:51:07

Perhaps the smaller sister isn't so timid after all.

0:51:100:51:14

The other one was inside,

0:51:190:51:22

it was like trying to understand how she came out,

0:51:220:51:26

what she was doing outside.

0:51:260:51:28

It wasn't long before her bigger sister followed,

0:51:480:51:52

cautiously taking her first steps back in the wild.

0:51:520:51:56

From a small enclosure,

0:52:150:52:17

they now have hundreds of miles of wilderness at their feet.

0:52:170:52:21

The sisters will now need to find their own place

0:52:350:52:39

amongst the wild jaguars here.

0:52:390:52:41

The team's other project, habituating these wild jaguars,

0:52:470:52:51

is also proving a success.

0:52:510:52:53

A number of cats can now be watched closely from a vehicle...

0:52:580:53:02

..like this young female - Nuca.

0:53:040:53:07

For the project founders,

0:53:080:53:10

Simon Bellingham and Mario Haberfeld,

0:53:100:53:13

this is a sign their work is paying off.

0:53:130:53:16

As you can see, she doesn't even look at us.

0:53:160:53:19

She sees us almost every day and we don't represent any threat to her,

0:53:210:53:25

so she's very relaxed.

0:53:250:53:27

I think we're all very fortunate to be able to witness this.

0:53:290:53:33

There's not many people in the world

0:53:330:53:35

who have witnessed a wild jaguar by the car.

0:53:350:53:38

They're proving that, just like big cats in Africa,

0:53:400:53:44

Pantanal's jaguars really can be the foundation

0:53:440:53:48

of vehicle-based ecotourism.

0:53:480:53:50

And the cat that always steals the show...

0:53:550:53:59

..is Esperanza...

0:54:000:54:01

..and her two cubs, now 16 months old.

0:54:110:54:14

Jaguars like Esperanza are helping change hearts and minds

0:54:200:54:25

towards these predators,

0:54:250:54:27

even amongst the ranchers.

0:54:270:54:29

The cowboys nowadays realise the value of the jaguar...

0:54:300:54:34

..and they see the economic power that the jaguar has.

0:54:350:54:39

He still has his job as a cowboy,

0:54:410:54:44

but now his wife is working in the lodge as a cook,

0:54:440:54:47

his daughter is working, cleaning the lodge,

0:54:470:54:51

his son is becoming a guide...

0:54:510:54:53

..so now his whole family is employed,

0:54:550:54:58

thanks to this one animal.

0:54:580:55:00

CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS

0:55:010:55:03

It's a remarkable achievement

0:55:030:55:06

and one which will help many jaguars in the future.

0:55:060:55:09

Four days after the orphans' release,

0:55:200:55:23

the satellite collar reveals the smaller sister

0:55:230:55:26

has been staying in one spot.

0:55:260:55:28

The team wait for her to leave before venturing in to have a look.

0:55:330:55:38

To their great excitement, it's a kill.

0:55:420:55:46

'It was just amazing.'

0:55:520:55:54

We were there,

0:55:540:55:56

we saw this peccary, you know,

0:55:560:55:58

and I was impressed because it's a peccary.

0:55:580:56:02

Peccary is a dangerous animal.

0:56:020:56:04

She didn't waste any piece of meat - she ate everything.

0:56:070:56:11

She cleaned the carcass. There is nothing left.

0:56:110:56:14

It couldn't be better.

0:56:140:56:16

This success marks the final chapter in the two-year journey

0:56:190:56:24

of the orphans, from their dramatic rescue,

0:56:240:56:27

through their gradual re-wilding, to their release.

0:56:270:56:31

It's a journey that has been very personal for all those

0:56:350:56:39

involved from the start.

0:56:390:56:41

Having this opportunity of taking care of these two cubs

0:56:480:56:51

is a new hope, a new chapter...

0:56:510:56:53

..to protect jaguars.

0:56:540:56:56

It's a great honour.

0:56:560:56:58

I'm very honoured to be part of this team,

0:56:580:57:01

to be part of this project.

In the months that follow, the orphan sisters continue to thrive.

0:57:070:57:12

They both hunt wild prey successfully

0:57:170:57:20

and the camera traps reveal one of the sisters

0:57:200:57:23

has joined up with the dominant male in the area.

0:57:230:57:26

They have earned their place,

0:57:300:57:32

both in the hearts of Lili and the team and amongst the wild cats here.

0:57:320:57:37

For the first time, I can say that they are wild jaguars.

0:57:400:57:45

I couldn't say that when they are in captivity,

0:57:450:57:48

but, right now, they are wild jaguars.

0:57:480:57:50

This pioneering project has helped reveal the secrets of one of

0:57:540:57:59

the world's least-known predators.

0:57:590:58:01

And, with this knowledge, there is now new hope

0:58:080:58:11

for all of Brazil's supreme big cats.
