The rugged, timeless beauty of the Isle of Mull.

0:00:080:00:12

This is the setting for a soaring wildlife success story

0:00:150:00:19

about our most magnificent bird of prey...

0:00:190:00:23

..the white-tailed sea eagle.

0:00:250:00:28

More than a third of all British sea eagles

0:00:290:00:31

live on this one island.

0:00:310:00:35

So just what is it that makes Mull an eagle paradise?

0:00:350:00:41

My name is Gordon Buchanan.

0:00:490:00:51

As a wildlife cameraman, I've travelled the world

0:00:510:00:54

filming some incredible animals.

0:00:540:00:57

But Mull is my home.

0:00:590:01:01

This is where I grew up and learned to love watching wildlife.

0:01:020:01:07

Lying off the west coast of Scotland, Mull is part of the Inner Hebrides.

0:01:210:01:26

The twisting and turning coastline stretches for an amazing 300 miles.

0:01:320:01:38

And all along the coast

0:01:390:01:41

we'll find sea eagles.

0:01:410:01:44

These fantastic birds are thriving in Mull,

0:01:460:01:49

and I'm so pleased to see just how well they're doing here today.

0:01:490:01:53

Because when I was a boy, there were no sea eagles here at all.

0:01:540:01:58

By the 19th century, eagles had become public enemy number one.

0:02:000:02:04

Blamed for lost livestock, these beautiful birds

0:02:040:02:09

were shot and poisoned,

0:02:090:02:12

with ruthless efficiency.

0:02:120:02:14

The last, lonely bird was shot dead in 1918.

0:02:160:02:21

They had become officially extinct in Britain.

0:02:230:02:27

The sea eagle's miraculous return

0:02:320:02:35

is one of the great British conservation stories,

0:02:350:02:38

and it begins, not on Mull, but the neighbouring island of Rum.

0:02:380:02:42

In the late '60s, a group of daring scientists chose Rum,

0:02:450:02:48

an island nature reserve, for a revolutionary plan.

0:02:480:02:51

They would bring young eagles from Norway and release them here,

0:02:510:02:55

hoping that they might be the pioneers of a new population,

0:02:550:03:00

a chance to bring the phoenix back from the flames.

0:03:000:03:04

This was truly groundbreaking conservation.

0:03:150:03:19

But the plan would take patience and dedication.

0:03:190:03:23

Over three decades, 140 birds were released.

0:03:230:03:26

And happily for the scientists, they settled quickly into their new home.

0:03:280:03:33

These noble lords of the sky aren't above a little common theft.

0:03:410:03:45

But they're more than capable of catching their own dinner.

0:03:510:03:54

And that's when you can enjoy them at their spectacular best.

0:04:120:04:16

The birds were doing well, spreading out to other islands.

0:04:190:04:23

But there were no eagle babies.

0:04:230:04:25

The whole project would fail miserably,

0:04:250:04:28

if the eagles couldn't raise a new generation.

0:04:280:04:30

Finally, in 1985, the great day came.

0:04:370:04:42

And it was here on Mull

0:04:420:04:43

that the first precious bundle of feathers came into the world -

0:04:430:04:48

the first sea eagle raised in Scotland for 70 years.

0:04:480:04:53

But why choose Mull?

0:04:550:04:57

What is it about this place that's helped them do so well here?

0:05:000:05:04

Well, for starters, there's loads of ideal places

0:05:060:05:09

for them to build a nest, high up where the chicks are safe.

0:05:090:05:14

But the parents must provide the chicks with food as well as lodging,

0:05:170:05:21

and Mull has an abundant, if rather unexpected,

0:05:210:05:24

source of prey for the sea eagles...

0:05:240:05:26

Rabbits.

0:05:280:05:29

The eagles aren't fussy feeders, and rabbits, along with the odd hare,

0:05:330:05:39

are a favourite here on Mull.

0:05:390:05:42

CHICKS CHEEP

0:05:590:06:01

They'll even take the occasional lamb,

0:06:010:06:04

a fact that local farmers have learnt to live with.

0:06:040:06:07

All in all, there's plenty of food here,

0:06:090:06:12

which gives the adults a great chance of raising chicks.

0:06:120:06:16

But what makes Mull really special

0:06:160:06:18

is the way the local people have taken them to heart.

0:06:180:06:21

Each Spring, Mull's Eagle Watch swings into operation,

0:06:250:06:29

and the whole island works together to keep an eye on THEIR eagles.

0:06:290:06:33

It's such a great scheme,

0:06:330:06:35

with so many different individuals and organisations working together.

0:06:350:06:39

With all this help from the community,

0:06:430:06:45

sea eagles are now doing so well,

0:06:450:06:47

they've become a major tourist attraction,

0:06:470:06:49

and no-one more than Mull's very own eagle A-list...

0:06:550:06:59

..Skye and Frisa.

0:07:040:07:06

Skye's the female.

0:07:080:07:09

She's on the right, with Frisa the male sat next to her.

0:07:090:07:12

They've been together for ten years now.

0:07:120:07:15

I've got to know them like old friends.

0:07:150:07:17

And millions tuned in to watch the pair

0:07:210:07:23

when the BBC Springwatch team visited Mull in 2005.

0:07:230:07:27

I think they make an exceptional couple.

0:07:310:07:33

They seem such caring and attentive parents,

0:07:330:07:36

and successful ones

0:07:360:07:38

despite the sometimes harsh conditions

0:07:380:07:41

that Mull can throw at them.

0:07:410:07:43

In nine years, they've managed to raise an incredible 16 chicks.

0:07:520:07:56

Undoubtedly, Mull's most prolific pair of sea eagles.

0:07:570:08:01

EAGLES SQUAWK

0:08:010:08:03

With plenty of food, places to nest and the friendly locals,

0:08:060:08:10

the future's bright for these magnificent birds.

0:08:100:08:14

Over time, they'll continue to spread beyond Mull and the Hebrides,

0:08:140:08:18

and I hope that wherever they go,

0:08:180:08:20

they'll find the acceptance and the success that they've found here.

0:08:200:08:25

For me, Mull will always be paradise.

0:08:270:08:30

It's great to know the eagles love it here just as much as I do.
