-but this is the Brecon Buff Goose.

-A fortnight ago, she won

-at the biggest show in Britain.

-It was the National

-Championship Show at Telford.

-The breed originates from Wales

-and was devised by Rhys Llewelyn.

-He lived near Swansea and

-discovered a goose of this colour.

-Her beak and feet

-contain a shade of pink.

-He bred with a goose from Brecon and

-is the only Welsh breed of goose.

-I won five awards in the show.

-She was first in her class and beat

-the best ganders in their classes...

-..and beat all 42 geese in the show

-for a place in the champions...

-..and beat another eight to

-ten breeds in the champions line-up.

-She's named as the best waterfowl

-in Britain for 2017.

-in the heart of the village.

-They've been immortalized there

-and are the backdrop to his stories.

-The book is a longing for the past

-and the loss of our innocence.

-The village bridge

-has always been part of my life.

-The bridge is one of three

-meeting places in the village.

-The village has a square at each end

-and the bridge is in the middle.

-Nobody would cross the bridge

-without chatting to a passer-by.

-They left their mark on the bridge

-as the bridge left its mark on them.

-The bridge was the physical

-and emotional centre for the locals.

-It both bound

-and separated the village.

-We didn't realize that it was a part

-of our lives.

-You didn't have to pick players

-for your football team...

-..because it was one side

-of the bridge against the other!

-Yes, the bridge is a record

-of the village's history...

-..and the influx of evacuees

-to the Irish workers of the 1960s.

-It was an exciting time.

-You had the Investiture and the Free

-Wales Army was rife in the area.

-Cayo lived in Lampeter

-and we were great friends.

-I was at the Red Lion Hotel and an

-Irishman, Eddie gave me a paper bag.

-I thought it was a fish they caught

-with gelignite in the water.

-It would explode and kill the fish

-and Eddie would give me some.

-That night, I opened the bag

-and found a stick of gelignite.

-I saw him afterwards.

-"Did you get it?" he asked.

-"It's something for the cause!"

-Today is about paying tribute

-to old friends.

-John Wyn Hughes or Jack and I were

-friends until we went to college.

-We were blood brothers.

-I remember a film when an Indian and

-cowboy made a cut in their thumbs...

-..and pressed them together

-to share each other's blood.

-We were underage and drank

-flagons of cider under the bridge...

-..and chatted about football

-and women.

-You mentioned women

-so need to explain JJ.

-We would secretly write down the

-initials of the girls we fancied.

-JJ has been my wife for almost 50

-years and she was Jane Jones then.

-Both Lyn and his father

-are on the bridge...

-..but the mark left by his uncle

-is the most tragic.

-I had an uncle in Ffair Rhos called

-Dai Williams or Dai Bach Ty Cefn.

-The initials DW are on the bridge

-and the nearby war memorial reads...

-..David Williams, Ty Cefn, Ffair

-Rhos killed at Bethune aged 19.

-He was buried there so doesn't

-have a grave in the village...

-..but his name is on the bridge

-and the war memorial.

-I've been obsessed by him all my

-life so he's important in this book.

-Do you hope that you've done justice

-to these spirits?

-By writing about these people, I

-feel as if I'm writing about myself.

-They are still speaking

-and their names exist...

-..but only a few of us

-are left to hear them.
