-Even though Cardiff -is a modern city... | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
-..its history stretches back -centuries. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
-Cardiff Castle was built -by the Normans... | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
-..in 1086. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:51
-The castle is one of the -city's main attractions... | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
-..and is very popular -with tourists. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
-A small town grew around -the castle... | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
-..and that's how Cardiff was -for centuries. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
-A small market town -where people sold their produce. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
-But that changed suddenly... | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
-..and the small town became -a large busy city. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
-What was that reason? | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
-Simply, it was coal... | 0:07:21 | 0:07:22
-..and the fact Cardiff -lay by the sea. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
-In the 19th century, -South Wales produced more coal... | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
-..than anywhere else in the world. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
-Most of the coal was transported -to Cardiff for export. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
-Huge docks were built here -in 1839. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
-Ships carried coal to the four -corners of the world every day. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:53
-Before long, Cardiff became -the world's largest coal port. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00

-..that offered mass employment. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
-It became an important centre -for banks. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
-Before long, it became obvious -that nearly everything... | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
-..that was important in Wales -was controlled from Cardiff. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
-Then the town -was even more important... | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
-..when it became the capital. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
-The village where my parents -come from... | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
-..seems a million miles away -from the busy city... | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
-..even though it's only 40 miles -really. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
-My mother and father were born -in Ystradgynlais... | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
-..and that's -where they were raised. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
-They moved to Cardiff -when they were young... | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
-..but Mam-gu still lives there -and I visit her quite often. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
-You weren't long. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26

-..but I wouldn't want to live here -all the time. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
-But Dad loves it here. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
-I think he'd prefer to live here -than in Cardiff. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
-I left Ystradgynlais because my job -was in Cardiff. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:59
-Also, since the children -were born... | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
-..I think there are more facilities -available in Cardiff. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
-They see Cardiff as their home... | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
-..and so that's why we've stayed -in Cardiff. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
-By living in Cardiff, I think the -children have missed out on... | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
-..living in a village environment, -like Ystradgynlais. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
-It's a close knit community, -everyone knows each other... | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
-..and you can't find that -on any scale in Cardiff. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
-On the one hand, -I'm sorry about that... | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
-..but on the other, -we're glad we live in Cardiff. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
-My mother lives with us -most of the time... | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
-..so I don't have to worry about -the children. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
-We can come and go, -to a great extent... | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
-..quite independently -without worrying too much... | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
-..about the children coming back. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
-There are plenty of advantages -in living in the city... | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
-..especially with three daughters. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
-They enjoy the shops -and the fashions... . | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
-.that are to be had in the city. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:31
-But we also recognize -there are disadvantages... | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
-..to city life. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
-Dangerous things can happen... | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
-..which doesn't happen in a close -community like Ystradgynlais. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:47
-We don't have any problems in being -a Welsh family... | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
-..in an Anglicised city. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
-We make the effort to move out -of the Welsh circle... | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
-..every now and then. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
-We've joined the tennis club... | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
-..the children have joined Brownies -and Guides... | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
-..where they mix with -English-speaking children. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
-I find they have plenty of friends -from both communities. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:20
-Hi, Sara, it's Luned. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
-Do you want to come -over this afternoon? | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
-'Believe it or not but living -in a city can be very lonely. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:34
-'I know some of the children -who live nearby... | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
-'..but most of my school friends... | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
-'..live in other parts of Cardiff. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
-'So spending an afternoon with my -friends takes a lot of arranging. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
-'I have to ask Mam or Dad -to drive us.' | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
-OK. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:52 | |
-See you later. Ta-ra. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:54

-More than 250,000 people -live in Cardiff. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
-With such a large city, -there's plenty of things to do. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:17
-There are leisure centres, -clubs and lessons... | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
-..where you can enjoy yourselves -or learn anything new. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
-One of my favourites is the centre -where you can to learn to ski. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
-I've only started to learn -and it's quite easy. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
