Across the UK, there are many people who would love to do something

0:00:020:00:05

they think will enhance their community.

0:00:050:00:07

Let's not leave the beach as we found it.

0:00:070:00:08

Let's leave it a little nicer.

0:00:080:00:10

But what they're lacking is the money to get their bright ideas off the ground.

0:00:100:00:14

My project needs your vote.

0:00:140:00:17

We're giving individuals the chance to kick-start their venture

0:00:170:00:20

with donations from their own communities.

0:00:200:00:22

Brilliant. Come on in, then. Come on.

0:00:240:00:27

But to win that pot, and to make dreams a reality,

0:00:270:00:29

they first need to win over an audience of locals

0:00:290:00:32

who will be voting for their favourite idea.

0:00:320:00:34

Is it going to be open for 24 hours a day?

0:00:340:00:37

Would this be sort of an annual event?

0:00:370:00:39

What are your running costs likely to be?

0:00:390:00:41

All across the country,

0:00:410:00:42

there are local heroes prepared to go the extra mile to make our

0:00:420:00:45

communities better places to live.

0:00:450:00:48

It's a very... Sorry.

0:00:480:00:49

Unusual from me. Very emotional.

0:00:500:00:52

They just need a helping hand to get their ideas up and running.

0:00:520:00:56

The champion who you have voted for is...

0:00:560:01:00

OK. I know it's not the summer but, come on,

0:01:140:01:17

who could resist an ice cream by the seaside?

0:01:170:01:19

I can't. Today,

0:01:190:01:21

we are at one of the most famous seaside resorts in Wales.

0:01:210:01:24

Welcome to Barry.

0:01:240:01:25

If you live in south Wales, and are of a certain age,

0:01:290:01:33

chances are you've had many happy holidays on Barry beaches.

0:01:330:01:36

However, as foreign travel became more affordable in the '60s and '70s,

0:01:360:01:41

Barry, like so many British seaside resorts, saw visitor numbers tumble.

0:01:410:01:47

But this is a community that is fighting back.

0:01:470:01:49

There's a seaside regeneration project under way and a passion in the local community

0:01:490:01:54

determined to put Barry, and its blue flag beach, firmly back on the map.

0:01:540:01:58

Our home for today is Barry's Memorial Hall.

0:02:060:02:08

Or, if you're local, it's the Memo.

0:02:080:02:10

I've had my ice cream, I've had my chips.

0:02:100:02:12

Let's get started.

0:02:120:02:13

The four locals hoping to make their dreams come true today are...

0:02:200:02:25

former soldier and local resident Sean,

0:02:250:02:27

who wants to create family-friendly exercise boot camps.

0:02:270:02:31

-What - last-minute preparations?

-Yes. Having a little run-through.

0:02:310:02:34

-If you don't know it now, you'll never know it.

-Very true. Very true.

0:02:340:02:37

I'm sure we'll be all right. It's just coasting over things, make sure we're all right.

0:02:370:02:41

Keen gardener Nicky, who's hoping to smell success for her outdoor passion.

0:02:410:02:45

I'm going to really try my best and try and put it across.

0:02:450:02:48

And that's all you can do, isn't it?

0:02:480:02:50

Yeah. Hopefully, I'm going to smash it tonight.

0:02:500:02:52

The young mum, Aoife, who's on a mission to clean up the beaches.

0:02:520:02:56

You literally have got your hands full, haven't you?

0:02:560:02:58

Absolutely. He's my lucky charm tonight.

0:02:580:02:59

-This is Brecon.

-Hello, Brecon.

0:02:590:03:01

-You nervous?

-Er, yes.

0:03:010:03:03

I think there's a lot of adrenaline pumping around as well as anything,

0:03:030:03:06

but I'm hoping that we can just get the message out there.

0:03:060:03:08

And keen archaeologist Karl, who wants to reveal Barry's medieval secrets.

0:03:080:03:13

I feel that the pitch itself will be enough to get the funds that we need for the project.

0:03:130:03:20

Each of the four community champions have an idea

0:03:200:03:23

they believe could enhance life in their local area.

0:03:230:03:26

But to get the money to make it happen,

0:03:260:03:29

first they have to win over the community in this historic building.

0:03:290:03:32

The Memorial Hall is aptly named because the walls are lined with the

0:03:330:03:37

names of more than 1,800 Barry men

0:03:370:03:40

who died serving in the two Great Wars and most recent conflicts.

0:03:400:03:45

Our people's champions are over there. They're ready.

0:03:480:03:50

And our audience sound like they're ready.

0:03:500:03:53

Shall we bring them together? Let the show begin.

0:03:530:03:55

Hello, everybody. Hello. Hello. Good day. Come on in!

0:03:570:04:01

Local people have been invited to hear what our community champions

0:04:030:04:07

have to say, and will later vote for their favourite pitch.

0:04:070:04:10

As they come in, they can make a cash donation towards the community fund.

0:04:100:04:17

I'm just looking forward to seeing what they've got to offer

0:04:170:04:20

for the community, you know? See what different...

0:04:200:04:22

..things are happening.

0:04:230:04:24

A great opportunity for local community groups to raise the money.

0:04:240:04:28

For the community it's really good. We're excited.

0:04:280:04:31

Wow! Wow! Wow!

0:04:360:04:39

We have some very impressive people backstage and they all have

0:04:390:04:42

one thing in common - they care about Barry.

0:04:420:04:46

In fact, they love Barry.

0:04:460:04:49

Your job today is to listen to our four people's champions pitch to you

0:04:490:04:53

their dream project.

0:04:530:04:55

All they ask you to do is to pick your favourite and vote.

0:04:550:04:59

The person that gets the most votes takes home the pot of money

0:04:590:05:02

which you have contributed to. It's as simple as that.

0:05:020:05:05

-Does that sound like a good plan? ALL:

-Yeah!

0:05:050:05:09

Well, shall we get a good thing going?

0:05:090:05:10

-ALL:

-Yeah!

0:05:100:05:13

Let's bring on our first people's champion, then.

0:05:140:05:16

Now, he's a former military man

0:05:160:05:18

and he thinks boot camps should be child's play.

0:05:180:05:21

-Please welcome Sean Molino.

-Right, let's do it!

0:05:210:05:24

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:240:05:27

-Good luck, Sean.

-Thank you.

0:05:280:05:29

Hello, everyone. My name is Sean Molino.

0:05:330:05:34

I'm a former serving soldier and physical training instructor

0:05:340:05:37

that served within the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards.

0:05:370:05:40

Off you go, big run round the park.

0:05:400:05:42

Right round the outside. You boys through the net.

0:05:420:05:44

Pull! Pull! Pull! Pull!

0:05:440:05:47

The majority of my life revolves around health and fitness.

0:05:470:05:49

I like to keep fit myself.

0:05:490:05:51

Between working my main role and trying to run the business at the same time,

0:05:510:05:55

there's a lot of hours eaten up in health and fitness.

0:05:550:05:57

But it's something I really enjoy.

0:05:570:05:59

Sean's love of fitness started when he was appointed as a PT instructor

0:05:590:06:04

in the Army, 12 years ago.

0:06:040:06:05

I was always a smiley PTI.

0:06:050:06:07

They know that. I used to... Smiling Assassin, maybe, they could call me.

0:06:070:06:11

But, no, I really enjoyed it.

0:06:110:06:12

My main role as a PTI there was to train the guys ready for operations,

0:06:120:06:17

whether it's Iraq, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Bosnia.

0:06:170:06:22

Whichever operations it was to go on, they had to be physically fit.

0:06:220:06:25

Sean now runs his own fitness and nutrition business in Bridgend.

0:06:250:06:29

And staying fit is an essential part of his everyday life.

0:06:290:06:33

While I'm training in the gym,

0:06:330:06:35

the kids like to swing round on the suspension trainers.

0:06:350:06:37

They really enjoy that. After that, basically, I tend to go for my run.

0:06:370:06:41

So, my run will be anywhere between 3, 5, 10K,

0:06:410:06:44

whatever I'm doing on the day.

0:06:440:06:46

Then I'll come back, I'll pick up Sarah and she'll do about 2-3K.

0:06:460:06:49

And then the last one, my little boy, he doesn't want to miss out.

0:06:490:06:51

He tends to do about 200 metres.

0:06:510:06:53

Sean's wife, Rhia, knows that for Sean to follow his dream,

0:06:530:06:57

sacrifices have to be made.

0:06:570:06:59

Sean is very, very busy.

0:06:590:07:02

In all fairness, as a family,

0:07:020:07:05

we don't get to do a lot because he is always working.

0:07:050:07:08

But he doesn't call it working, because it's his passion.

0:07:080:07:11

Wales, like the rest of the UK, has a growing obesity problem.

0:07:110:07:15

Almost 60% of Welsh adults are overweight

0:07:150:07:18

and 26% of Welsh children are overweight, or obese, too.

0:07:180:07:23

Go! Run. Stay there, boys. Run, run, run.

0:07:230:07:26

Sean thinks he has part of the solution by using his expertise

0:07:260:07:30

to offer free fitness classes for adults and children together.

0:07:300:07:34

This is a new initiative, and Sean would run these classes in his own time for free.

0:07:340:07:40

We've got parents and children exercising together,

0:07:400:07:43

learning about health and nutrition, first of all.

0:07:430:07:45

Then they're going to go into separate challenges.

0:07:450:07:47

But the main focus for me is they're having fun,

0:07:470:07:50

they're learning together,

0:07:500:07:51

and they're going to go away with a really positive attitude,

0:07:510:07:54

and, hopefully, give them some positive childhood experiences.

0:07:540:07:58

-ALL:

-Yay!

0:07:580:07:59

Let's take a look at some of the kit

0:08:000:08:02

we're going to using on the sessions.

0:08:020:08:04

Here we've got some tyres. OK.

0:08:040:08:05

I bet you're wondering what we're going to be doing with these tyres,

0:08:050:08:07

aren't you? You're not going to put them on your car.

0:08:070:08:10

You can roll them around, you can pull them.

0:08:100:08:12

You can attach them to the rope.

0:08:120:08:13

We can have some nice team relays with ropes and tyres.

0:08:130:08:16

OK. We can roll them around for the youngsters.

0:08:160:08:19

Moving on to our ropes. We can do a lot with ropes.

0:08:190:08:21

OK. We can jump over them, we can pull them.

0:08:210:08:24

Again, tug-of-war.

0:08:240:08:25

Think team games with the little ones.

0:08:250:08:27

Grandparents, parents involved all together.

0:08:270:08:30

Finally, we've got this. It's a cam net.

0:08:300:08:32

It's not for your car, if you go out in a forest, so you chuck it over

0:08:320:08:35

so no-one can see it when you're parking, all right?

0:08:350:08:37

What this is for is for you to crawl under,

0:08:370:08:40

to crawl up and crawl over. All right?

0:08:400:08:42

So, the main thing is it's all about fun, OK?

0:08:420:08:45

Youngsters from the age of six up to grandparents, parents,

0:08:450:08:49

brothers and sisters - all training together and having some fun,

0:08:490:08:53

exciting challenges ahead.

0:08:530:08:56

Let me tell a little bit how the idea come about.

0:08:560:08:59

Last year, I took it upon myself to deliver free sessions within schools across Wales.

0:08:590:09:04

I delivered over 60 sessions in schools.

0:09:040:09:07

The sessions have been educational.

0:09:070:09:09

We teach them about diet and nutrition.

0:09:090:09:11

So, it's a ten-minute snapshot about healthy tips.

0:09:110:09:14

What happened then,

0:09:140:09:16

we put them together as teams and they overcome challenges -

0:09:160:09:18

not just physical challenges but mental challenges as well.

0:09:180:09:21

It's not wholly physical, all right?

0:09:210:09:23

It's teaching. We have to engage the youngsters

0:09:230:09:25

to teach them to live a healthier lifestyle.

0:09:250:09:27

I really hope you vote for my family fitness sessions,

0:09:270:09:30

not just you, but for you and your family.

0:09:300:09:34

Thank you.

0:09:340:09:35

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:350:09:38

For his family fitness sessions, which he plans to put on free of charge,

0:09:400:09:44

Sean needs £50 for each three-hour venue hire.

0:09:440:09:48

Ideally, he's hoping for several months' worth of sessions.

0:09:480:09:51

Well, a great round of applause from the audience,

0:09:510:09:54

-but how does the family think... How do you think he did?

-We think he's done very well.

0:09:540:09:58

He spoke very confident. We're very proud of him.

0:09:580:10:01

-He's got a loud voice, hasn't he?

-He can be louder.

-I bet.

0:10:010:10:05

Right, well, it's time for a grilling now, I think.

0:10:050:10:08

Let's open the floor now. Who's got the first question for Sean, please?

0:10:080:10:11

-Yes, gentleman on the end.

-You said a lot about outdoor stuff,

0:10:110:10:14

is there indoor sessions as well?

0:10:140:10:17

Yes, for sure. 100%.

0:10:170:10:19

As we run through the winter months, it will all be indoors.

0:10:190:10:22

Again, that's what our funding is for, to take it indoors.

0:10:220:10:25

We've been very thankful to have a local school that we can do with the

0:10:250:10:29

facility, which has already been prepped, so it's all ready to go, basically.

0:10:290:10:33

Obviously, the elements outdoors...

0:10:330:10:35

Through the summer, we can take it on the beach,

0:10:350:10:37

we can take it outdoors to local parks,

0:10:370:10:38

but winter months it really has to be indoors,

0:10:380:10:40

especially when dealing with the youngsters as well,

0:10:400:10:42

and especially some of our older people that will be attending as well.

0:10:420:10:45

We don't want to... It's not like some of the military boot camps

0:10:450:10:47

you see and we're going to have you crawling through...

0:10:470:10:49

Commando crawling through tunnels and posting fake grenades and stuff, OK?

0:10:490:10:53

But, no, it will be fun and exciting

0:10:530:10:54

and it will be indoors in the winter months, is the answer to the question, Huw.

0:10:540:10:57

Another question from the audience, please.

0:10:570:10:59

Yes, man in the blue shirt.

0:10:590:11:01

What are the longer-term running costs of the project?

0:11:010:11:04

Well, for me, if we're lucky enough to secure funding, that's the key.

0:11:040:11:08

If we can secure 200, it'll run for two months.

0:11:080:11:10

Hopefully, off the back of it,

0:11:100:11:11

if it's seen to do well and the response is great with the local

0:11:110:11:14

community, I'm hoping to try and secure more funding through other

0:11:140:11:18

avenues, basically. Hopefully,

0:11:180:11:19

if we've got that proven test that it has worked,

0:11:190:11:22

we've got the testimonials off the local community, that yes,

0:11:220:11:24

they're enjoying it, yes, they're learning, and, hopefully,

0:11:240:11:27

there's some positive results with diet and nutrition and people making

0:11:270:11:30

healthier lifestyle changes,

0:11:300:11:32

-there should be no problem in securing further funding through other avenues.

-Thank you.

0:11:320:11:36

Round of applause, please, for Sean Molino.

0:11:360:11:39

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:11:390:11:41

All right. Yeah. I think it went pretty well, to be honest with you.

0:11:440:11:47

Some good questions, but hopefully I answered them as best I could.

0:11:470:11:51

Research suggests that working out together can transform families' dynamic.

0:11:510:11:56

As with adults, exercise puts children in a better mood because of the endorphins released.

0:11:560:12:02

We all know the joy that we get when we're tending to our garden.

0:12:030:12:06

We like to see our flowers flourish and grow.

0:12:060:12:08

Well, our next people's champion wants to share her garden,

0:12:080:12:13

but she has a very special garden.

0:12:130:12:15

Please welcome Nicky Vickery.

0:12:150:12:17

I'm really nervous. Hopefully it goes really well.

0:12:170:12:20

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:200:12:22

All right? Good luck.

0:12:250:12:26

Hello, everyone. My name's Nicky Vickery

0:12:300:12:33

and I'm part of Barry Community Gardens And Allotments.

0:12:330:12:36

I'm also a volunteer for Gibby Green Fingers.

0:12:360:12:40

Nicky moved from Cardiff to Gibbonsdown on the outskirts of Barry

0:12:420:12:47

six years ago, and she and daughter JC love living here.

0:12:470:12:51

It's quite a close-knit community.

0:12:510:12:53

From people who I've met up here, they're very nice,

0:12:550:12:58

and say hello in the mornings.

0:12:580:12:59

There's a lot of people round here who share the same interests.

0:12:590:13:03

As a single mum, most of Nicky's day revolves around JC.

0:13:030:13:07

My daughter JC's a proper little princess.

0:13:080:13:11

She's five going on 15, and she knows everything.

0:13:110:13:14

Two days a week, Nicky goes to the Barry community gardens,

0:13:180:13:22

where a group of volunteers, led by Nicky,

0:13:220:13:25

took over some council waste ground earlier this year.

0:13:250:13:28

The site was being shut down but Nicky formed Gibby Green Fingers,

0:13:280:13:33

Gibby being the affectionate name for Gibbonsdown,

0:13:330:13:36

and they secured a three-year lease to manage the site as a community gardening project.

0:13:360:13:41

The site today includes a pond,

0:13:460:13:48

vegetable beds, polytunnels, and fruit trees.

0:13:480:13:52

People that come and use it are local residents and they've all got

0:13:540:13:58

different skills. Some of them do gardening, some of them do woodwork,

0:13:580:14:02

some of them just like to sit down and make a cup of tea

0:14:020:14:04

and sit down and have a chat.

0:14:040:14:06

But we're open to anybody who wants to come here.

0:14:060:14:10

Dozens of local volunteers help out, and they get a lot more out of the

0:14:100:14:13

green fingers club than just gardening.

0:14:130:14:16

It does you good. It gets you out of the house.

0:14:160:14:18

It helps you mix with people.

0:14:180:14:20

I've lost a dress size in four months coming down here,

0:14:200:14:24

and it didn't cost me a penny.

0:14:240:14:26

So I saved on all the gym fees.

0:14:260:14:28

This is brilliant. And you're out in the open.

0:14:280:14:31

The green gym, this is, the green gym.

0:14:310:14:33

Nicky wants to enhance the site and has come up with a plan

0:14:370:14:40

to build a sensory garden. Already partially constructed,

0:14:400:14:44

she wants to turn this corner into a specific area

0:14:440:14:46

that will stimulate the senses,

0:14:460:14:49

so that visitors of all abilities can appreciate it.

0:14:490:14:52

Have some wheelchair access and height access containers,

0:14:520:14:56

where people can come and plant their own things.

0:14:560:14:59

Get a nice water feature fitted in.

0:14:590:15:02

Get some nice flowers that you can touch, smell, feel, taste.

0:15:020:15:07

It will be absolutely perfect.

0:15:070:15:09

But as Gibby Green Fingers is solely reliant on donations,

0:15:090:15:13

there are no funds available to finish turning this space into

0:15:130:15:17

the sensory garden that Nicky and her team of volunteers dream of.

0:15:170:15:21

It's so frustrating not being able to push forward from this garden

0:15:210:15:25

because there are lots of people round this area who need a space like this.

0:15:250:15:30

Gibby Green Fingers are a local resident group who want to make

0:15:320:15:36

a difference in the area.

0:15:360:15:38

Most of us are born with our five senses - touch, taste, smell,

0:15:380:15:44

sight and hearing.

0:15:440:15:46

If you've lost one of them senses,

0:15:460:15:48

a sensory garden would be a perfect place to go and relax.

0:15:480:15:52

It would have objects and plants

0:15:520:15:55

like lights, water, and different smells,

0:15:550:15:58

to heighten lost senses.

0:15:580:16:00

Most of you here today will benefit from this project.

0:16:000:16:04

The sensory garden will be open to any age and it will be open to any

0:16:040:16:09

groups. Maybe some of you here haven't got gardens,

0:16:090:16:13

or maybe some people who live in flats.

0:16:130:16:15

It will be fantastic for Barry to get this project up and running for

0:16:150:16:20

everyone to come and enjoy.

0:16:200:16:21

If we had £200 today,

0:16:230:16:25

we would be able to plant 33 different varieties of plants,

0:16:250:16:30

which would make this space really fantastic.

0:16:300:16:34

This project is so important for the people of Barry,

0:16:340:16:38

as it would be the first sensory garden that is in this area

0:16:380:16:42

and will be open to the public. Thank you very much.

0:16:420:16:45

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:16:450:16:47

For a sensory garden project,

0:16:500:16:52

Nicky wants £200 for plants and £250 for a water feature,

0:16:520:16:57

wind chimes and accessories.

0:16:570:17:00

We're going to open the floor now to the audience.

0:17:000:17:01

-Are you ready?

-Yes.

-Right, who's got our first question for Nicky, please?

0:17:010:17:05

Yes, the young lady there.

0:17:050:17:07

Would the garden be able to be used all year round?

0:17:070:17:10

Yes, it will.

0:17:100:17:11

Hopefully, with our volunteers that are here now,

0:17:110:17:15

we're hoping to open six days a week all year round for everybody

0:17:150:17:19

like yourselves to come in and enjoy the garden.

0:17:190:17:23

-Good luck.

-Thank you.

-Any more questions, please?

0:17:230:17:25

Yes, the lady in the black jacket.

0:17:250:17:27

There are two local schools in the area and a care home.

0:17:270:17:31

Would there be opportunities for those people to visit?

0:17:310:17:34

Yes, there would be all opportunities for any groups or any residents

0:17:340:17:38

from the Barry area and outside the Barry area to come and visit us.

0:17:380:17:44

-Thank you.

-Great questions, eh, Nicky?

0:17:440:17:46

Well handled, well handled.

0:17:460:17:48

-Thank you.

-A round of applause for Nicky, please.

0:17:480:17:51

-Thank you. Good luck.

-Thanks very much. Thank you.

0:17:510:17:56

Oh, that was very, very nerve-racking.

0:18:030:18:06

Sensory gardens can have a therapeutic value for visitors of all abilities.

0:18:060:18:11

They're credited with reducing stress and lowering blood pressure,

0:18:110:18:16

as well as offering a space to relax, meditate, contemplate, and talk.

0:18:160:18:21

Two down, two more to go.

0:18:210:18:23

But who is going to get a good thing going?

0:18:230:18:26

Well, Barry, I have to congratulate you because your beach is amazing.

0:18:260:18:31

Earlier today I had a lovely ice cream, I had a stroll along the beach, some chips, it was beautiful.

0:18:310:18:35

And our next people's champion's pitch is all about that beach.

0:18:350:18:40

Please welcome Aoife Blight.

0:18:400:18:42

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

-Wish me luck!

0:18:420:18:45

Hi, how are you doing? Thanks a lot.

0:18:470:18:49

Hi, everyone, I'm Aoife.

0:18:520:18:54

I moved to Barry three years ago with my husband and I absolutely love living here.

0:18:540:18:58

Aoife is originally from Dublin,

0:19:030:19:05

but after falling for the charms of Barry local James,

0:19:050:19:08

they married and made Barry their family home.

0:19:080:19:11

We're currently on Whitmore Bay.

0:19:120:19:14

This is the main beach of Barry Island.

0:19:140:19:15

This is where everybody who's ever watched Gavin and Stacey will know.

0:19:150:19:19

Barry's gorgeous.

0:19:210:19:23

I've always loved it, growing up here, but it's definitely improved

0:19:230:19:25

and it's just getting better all the time.

0:19:250:19:27

-Yeah.

-I think you get a sense of community here.

0:19:270:19:30

Really happy here.

0:19:300:19:31

Aoife and James have always been very environmentally aware.

0:19:350:19:39

And that didn't change when baby Brecon was born six months ago.

0:19:390:19:43

But they did see a big difference in the amount of household waste they were generating.

0:19:430:19:48

When Brecon was born, we were using disposable nappies and, all of a sudden,

0:19:480:19:52

our waste went from two bags every two weeks to six.

0:19:520:19:56

It was massive.

0:19:560:19:57

So, decided to go to cloth nappies and we saw an instant reduction in our waste, back to pre-baby times.

0:19:570:20:03

People tend to think, this is a lot of washing, it's a lot of work, but, actually, it's not so bad.

0:20:030:20:07

We do a couple of extra wash loads.

0:20:070:20:09

The nappies are all really colourful.

0:20:090:20:11

We think they're better, they're more absorbent,

0:20:110:20:13

and they do the job really well.

0:20:130:20:15

Aoife and James are eco-friendly in other ways, too.

0:20:150:20:19

I'm using conkers to do my laundry.

0:20:190:20:22

You chop them up, pour some water over them,

0:20:220:20:24

preferably hot to boiling water,

0:20:240:20:26

and leave them to soak for about half an hour,

0:20:260:20:28

or you can leave them overnight.

0:20:280:20:30

Then strain them and you can use them as a laundry soap.

0:20:300:20:34

We always thought we'd been quite eco.

0:20:340:20:36

We always try to recycle as much as possible.

0:20:360:20:38

But then we realised that recycling isn't necessarily the be-all and end-all.

0:20:380:20:44

Aoife is absolutely someone who will try to drive change herself.

0:20:440:20:48

She is like a dynamo. She is super-enthusiastic.

0:20:480:20:52

When she's got something in her teeth, she just goes for it.

0:20:520:20:56

Trying to reduce food miles,

0:20:560:20:58

Aoife has turned the back garden into a fruit and vegetable plot.

0:20:580:21:02

Nothing more Irish than that, now!

0:21:040:21:06

Didn't you say you can make something out of the leaves from the carrots?

0:21:060:21:08

-You can make pesto.

-Carrot leaf pesto.

0:21:080:21:10

They can be used as parsley, I think.

0:21:100:21:13

They're meant to be like the same kind of herby flavour as parsley.

0:21:130:21:16

-Let me try a bit of this.

-Oh. It's covered in mud.

0:21:160:21:18

Outside the home, the problem of litter on Barry's coastline

0:21:200:21:23

has been an issue for Aoife for some time.

0:21:230:21:25

The beautiful beaches in the summertime can be strewn with rubbish.

0:21:250:21:29

We're in a very windy place,

0:21:290:21:31

so litter gets blown out of the bins.

0:21:310:21:32

We have a lot of seagulls.

0:21:320:21:34

They take whatever they want out of the bins.

0:21:340:21:36

So rubbish ends up on the beach.

0:21:360:21:38

Aoife wants to reduce the amount of litter on Whitmore Bay by installing

0:21:380:21:43

a two-minute beach clean board that allows passers-by to safely pick up

0:21:430:21:47

litter as they're walking and dispose of it.

0:21:470:21:50

The two-minute beach clean is, at the end of your day on the beach or your walk on the beach,

0:21:500:21:54

bring away whatever you brought to the beach,

0:21:540:21:56

but then spend two minutes picking up anything that you see as well.

0:21:560:21:59

So, it's not just leaving the beach as you found it,

0:21:590:22:02

it's leaving it a little bit nicer.

0:22:020:22:03

My idea is based on the two-minute beach clean.

0:22:060:22:08

This is an incentive that started in Cornwall in 2013, and it's been

0:22:080:22:12

incredibly successful all over the UK and Ireland.

0:22:120:22:14

The idea is very simple.

0:22:150:22:17

You just go to the board and there will be a litter picker there,

0:22:170:22:20

and a plastic bag you can just take with you as you go and enjoy the beach.

0:22:200:22:24

Go on your walk, take your time, playing in the sand.

0:22:240:22:27

But while you're there, maybe just pick up any marine litter you come across.

0:22:270:22:31

Pick it up, pop it in the bag, simple as that.

0:22:310:22:34

Pick it up, straight back in the bag.

0:22:340:22:36

Then, when you're finished, go back up to the board.

0:22:360:22:39

Take a photo of your new collection and post it on social media.

0:22:390:22:42

That'll help us spread the word all over the world

0:22:420:22:45

and get the message out there that doing your little bit extra for the beach is a good thing.

0:22:450:22:51

In Bude, where this started,

0:22:510:22:52

they've seen a 61% decrease in the amount of litter that is left on the beaches.

0:22:520:22:56

61%. That's massive. That's over the course of just one year.

0:22:560:23:00

Whitmore Bay is incredibly popular during the summer, and that's great,

0:23:000:23:04

but what isn't great is the amount of litter that gets left behind.

0:23:040:23:08

Last year we made the headlines, but for all the wrong reasons.

0:23:080:23:13

There was so much litter on the shore,

0:23:130:23:14

it was just washing up in and around people's legs.

0:23:140:23:17

It was like paddling in a bin.

0:23:170:23:19

That's not what we want to get known for,

0:23:190:23:21

and it's not what we want for our beach. So, why do I need your vote?

0:23:210:23:25

I need your vote so that we can buy all of the equipment we need to get this operation going.

0:23:250:23:30

That includes this beautiful board, and all of the litter pickers

0:23:300:23:32

that we'll need to make sure that if there's any loss or damage

0:23:320:23:36

that we have some to spare on demand.

0:23:360:23:38

I think this is a really important project for Barry for loads of different reasons.

0:23:380:23:42

Obviously, I think it's good to have clean beaches,

0:23:420:23:45

but also I think it will encourage everybody to get out into the fresh air,

0:23:450:23:49

to get out and discover their beaches.

0:23:490:23:51

It will help them to connect with nature and the environment around them,

0:23:510:23:55

as well as getting a bit fitter.

0:23:550:23:57

I'd love your support so that we can make a real positive impact to our environment.

0:23:570:24:01

Let's not leave the beach as we found it,

0:24:010:24:04

let's leave it a little nicer. Thank you very much.

0:24:040:24:07

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:24:070:24:09

For her beach cleaning project, Aoife is asking for

0:24:140:24:17

£400 for a specially-designed A-frame board

0:24:170:24:21

and £8 for each litter picker.

0:24:210:24:23

OK. We're going to open it straight to the floor.

0:24:230:24:25

Who has the first question for Aoife, please?

0:24:250:24:28

Yes. Lady in the blue, please.

0:24:280:24:30

Where are you planning on putting the board?

0:24:300:24:32

Initially, we want to put a board at the entrance to Whitmore Bay.

0:24:320:24:35

There's some wonderful recycling bins there already.

0:24:350:24:38

Wonderful bins(!)

0:24:380:24:39

And there are some general waste bins there, too.

0:24:390:24:41

So we think it's a great place.

0:24:410:24:43

It gets the most footfall on the beach, and it's already got

0:24:430:24:47

the infrastructure in place to look after the litter that comes back up.

0:24:470:24:50

Thanks for your question. Another question for Aoife, please?

0:24:500:24:53

The costings of them boards and replacing them litter pickers, Aoife.

0:24:530:24:58

Have you looked into that?

0:24:580:25:00

Yes, absolutely. So, one of the boards costs about £400.

0:25:000:25:05

Beautiful quality. They'll stand up in hopefully most weather.

0:25:050:25:08

The litter pickers, we can get ten of them for £80.

0:25:080:25:12

And, my idea is to, depending on how much money we get,

0:25:120:25:15

to get one board and then spend the rest of the money on litter pickers,

0:25:150:25:19

so that we always have some backup.

0:25:190:25:20

But also, what I would love to do is set up some initiatives to raise

0:25:200:25:25

awareness. It's maybe not enough to just have it there and hope for the

0:25:250:25:29

best that people will see it, but to get like an event going.

0:25:290:25:33

We have a lot of beach cleaning clubs that go round on a monthly basis and they do a fantastic job,

0:25:330:25:37

so, to collaborate with them and get the whole community behind it -

0:25:370:25:41

not just a couple of volunteers, but the whole community -

0:25:410:25:43

to get out there and have a bit of fun with it.

0:25:430:25:46

So that's what I'd like to do if I had the extra money.

0:25:460:25:49

Thanks for that, Aoife. I'm going to go into the audience now and talk to

0:25:490:25:51

a few of your supporters, if that's OK, see how they thought you did.

0:25:510:25:54

So, how do you think Aoife did?

0:25:560:25:58

I think she did really well.

0:25:580:26:00

She obviously wants to make a positive difference to the environment

0:26:000:26:04

and particularly to Barry and the beaches.

0:26:040:26:07

And I applaud her effort and her energy and I think we should all support her.

0:26:070:26:12

Yeah. It's a great idea.

0:26:120:26:14

But it's down to you to decide who's going to get a good thing going.

0:26:140:26:17

But for now, please, ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for Aoife Blight.

0:26:170:26:21

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

-Thank you. Bye!

0:26:210:26:24

Ah! That was OK, I think.

0:26:270:26:31

Typical beach litter, such as plastic bottles,

0:26:320:26:36

takes 450 years to degrade.

0:26:360:26:38

And food trays made of Styrofoam will never degrade.

0:26:380:26:42

So, to protect the beach, removing the litter is the only solution.

0:26:420:26:46

Now, all you local residents may think you know Barry,

0:26:470:26:51

but how well do you really know it?

0:26:510:26:54

Well, our final people's champion today believes, and wants to share,

0:26:540:26:59

some secrets that have been left undiscovered for hundreds of years.

0:26:590:27:03

Please welcome our final people's champion today, Karl-James Langford.

0:27:030:27:08

I'm looking forward to this, so I'll see you soon.

0:27:080:27:11

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:110:27:13

-Good luck. Good luck.

-Thank you.

0:27:130:27:19

My name is Karl-James Langford.

0:27:190:27:20

I'm an actor, I'm an archaeologist,

0:27:200:27:23

and I have a love for the history and archaeology of our wonderful town.

0:27:230:27:27

No, you're not seeing things, there really is a pirate doing the garden.

0:27:290:27:35

Barry local and dad-of-two Karl uses costumes to bring colour and life to his personal passions.

0:27:350:27:42

# Hark, now, the drums beat up again. #

0:27:420:27:45

As well as being an actor and an archaeologist, Karl is also a teacher.

0:27:450:27:49

So a man of many talents.

0:27:490:27:51

I've got a very colourful life. I teach in the week, various classes.

0:27:510:27:56

On a Wednesday, every now and again, I do a ghost walk,

0:27:560:27:59

and I'm dressed up as a pirate with my little friend here,

0:27:590:28:03

who's called Poe - Pieces Of Eight.

0:28:030:28:06

I like to present the past and bring it alive.

0:28:060:28:09

We're walking through the site of a medieval village.

0:28:090:28:11

Karl is also the chairman of the Archaeology Cymru group and he holds

0:28:110:28:16

regular guided walks in the local area.

0:28:160:28:18

Today's walk is exploring the deserted village of Highlight,

0:28:180:28:22

two miles north of Barry.

0:28:220:28:24

Over on the right would have been the original site of a manor house.

0:28:240:28:27

So, we're going along this wonderful lane...

0:28:270:28:29

There are medieval ruins on the outskirts of Barry and,

0:28:320:28:35

apart from local archaeologists, very few people know about them.

0:28:350:28:39

Karl has studied the history of this village called Highlight and wants to share its past.

0:28:390:28:44

We've got the humps and bumps on the left and humps and bumps on the right.

0:28:440:28:48

What we've got, we've got this medieval lane.

0:28:480:28:51

It's a sunken lane and it goes through the deserted medieval village of Highlight.

0:28:510:28:57

In its heyday, 150 people lived in the village.

0:28:570:29:00

But the plague in 1349 killed 90% of the inhabitants.

0:29:000:29:05

And by the 1500s, the village was totally abandoned.

0:29:050:29:09

How can this be protected more? Nobody knows about this, do they?

0:29:090:29:12

I think the protection of the site is actually people coming out here and appreciating this is here.

0:29:120:29:18

I didn't know there was a church here.

0:29:180:29:20

I didn't realise there was a bit of village here.

0:29:200:29:22

He wants to share the secrets of this ancient ruined village with the

0:29:220:29:25

whole community by asking for funds to erect signs that explain to

0:29:250:29:30

passers-by what lies beneath their feet.

0:29:300:29:33

There will be information about the history of the landscape,

0:29:330:29:36

history of the sites they're actually visiting.

0:29:360:29:38

We've got volunteers on board as well,

0:29:380:29:41

that we don't need any money for.

0:29:410:29:43

But we've got volunteers on board to actually clear the route.

0:29:430:29:47

Along the coast, archaeological sites are being eroded every single day,

0:29:470:29:52

being lost into the sea. This is a site inland.

0:29:520:29:55

This can be saved and preserved.

0:29:550:29:57

Let's save what we've got before these sites are lost for ever.

0:29:570:30:00

A visit to Highlight will be enhanced by using

0:30:030:30:07

wonderful signs, such as this.

0:30:070:30:10

These signs will guide us to understand the rich tapestry underneath all our feet.

0:30:100:30:16

Highlight is one of those footpaths that you can tease out

0:30:160:30:21

interesting pointers to our past.

0:30:210:30:23

The route way led all the way to the sea,

0:30:230:30:26

all the way to the ancient village of Barry.

0:30:260:30:29

There is the ruins of a church there today.

0:30:290:30:32

This last sign that you would see

0:30:320:30:34

would be a description of the church itself.

0:30:340:30:38

The route is a footpath that can be

0:30:380:30:40

made into a footpath for people in wheelchairs.

0:30:400:30:44

It's a footpath for children.

0:30:440:30:46

It's for everybody. Barry is for everybody.

0:30:460:30:50

If I do win this pitch today, £200 may produce two or three signs,

0:30:500:30:55

500 - six or seven signs.

0:30:550:30:58

Let's keep this town alive,

0:30:580:31:01

because it's in the past that we can then go into our future.

0:31:010:31:07

Thank you very much.

0:31:070:31:08

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:080:31:11

For his walk to reveal Barry's hidden archaeology,

0:31:130:31:17

Karl wants £500 to make information boards

0:31:170:31:19

that will be erected along the route of the ancient past.

0:31:190:31:23

Very passionate pitch, I'm sure you'll agree, there.

0:31:230:31:26

So, we'll open up the floor straightaway, I think.

0:31:260:31:29

Who's got the first question for Karl, please?

0:31:290:31:32

Gentleman on the end there, please.

0:31:320:31:35

Hi, Karl. A quick question.

0:31:350:31:37

These ruins, could they be damaged if people are walking or cycling over them?

0:31:370:31:41

The footpath has been established for a long period of time.

0:31:410:31:45

The footpath went through the village.

0:31:450:31:47

The remains of the buildings, the humps and bumps,

0:31:470:31:49

are on the left and the right.

0:31:490:31:51

So, you wouldn't be doing any damage.

0:31:510:31:52

By seeing these sights, by understanding that they're there,

0:31:520:31:57

we can protect them.

0:31:570:31:59

If we don't know the past is there, then we can't protect it.

0:31:590:32:02

-A question from me, Karl.

-Go for it.

0:32:020:32:04

Why are we only finding out about this now?

0:32:040:32:07

I think Barry itself, since 1884,

0:32:070:32:10

has constantly moved forward and forward and forward.

0:32:100:32:14

And eventually we'll stop and then we'll realise what we've got.

0:32:140:32:17

It's not just about medieval sites and Roman sites.

0:32:170:32:20

It's about all those sites from the Tudor period,

0:32:200:32:23

all those wonderful layers of the past.

0:32:230:32:26

Everything is relevant and today is relevant.

0:32:260:32:29

This moment today will one day be history.

0:32:290:32:32

But it's important to all of us.

0:32:320:32:34

-Thank you.

-Round of applause, please, for Karl.

0:32:340:32:37

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Good luck.

0:32:370:32:41

Wow! That went really well.

0:32:470:32:49

Good reaction from the audience.

0:32:490:32:51

The fund that one of the people's champions will take home today is £523.20.

0:32:510:32:59

So, who gets the money?

0:32:590:33:03

Which project is going to benefit the community of Barry the most?

0:33:030:33:07

Well, let's have a little recap of our four people's champions.

0:33:070:33:11

Today, we've heard from Sean and his fun, family fitness sessions.

0:33:110:33:15

CHEERING Yes! Yes!

0:33:150:33:18

Nicky, who wants to create a sensory garden for the whole community.

0:33:210:33:26

CHEERING Yeah.

0:33:260:33:31

Aoife, with her beach litter clean-up campaign.

0:33:310:33:34

A round applause for Aoife. CHEERING Yes!

0:33:340:33:38

And Karl's walk to rediscover old ruins.

0:33:390:33:43

A round applause for Karl as well, please.

0:33:430:33:45

CHEERING Yes.

0:33:450:33:47

So, the question is very simple.

0:33:510:33:53

Which project do you think the community of Barry is going to benefit from the most?

0:33:530:33:58

Well, it's time to vote.

0:33:580:34:00

I think Sean did exceptionally well for our community here in Barry.

0:34:080:34:13

Our children need excellent role models and I think that the best

0:34:130:34:16

role models for our children are their parents.

0:34:160:34:19

There's some fantastic projects across the board, so, ultimately,

0:34:190:34:22

whoever wins, they're going to be a credit to the community.

0:34:220:34:25

Let's just see how people vote, really.

0:34:250:34:27

I've lived in Barry all my life and I've never heard of Gibby Green Fingers,

0:34:270:34:30

and I think they need to get out there and push the message a bit more, cos it's brilliant.

0:34:300:34:34

I thought the other pitches were great.

0:34:340:34:36

We've got four fantastic projects going, and everybody is just

0:34:360:34:40

brimming with enthusiasm and passion for their individual projects.

0:34:400:34:43

If we can get one of these going, that would be an incredible thing for Barry.

0:34:430:34:47

If we can get all of them going by collaborating together somehow, that would be just incredible.

0:34:470:34:53

It's not the best man who wins, it's the community wins.

0:34:530:34:56

Four great projects.

0:35:000:35:01

There was the beach clean-up, archaeology,

0:35:010:35:03

family free fitness, and the sensory garden.

0:35:030:35:05

All great. I don't know how it's going to go.

0:35:050:35:07

So, that's it. It's now time to reveal who you have chosen

0:35:140:35:19

to get a good thing going in Barry. But, first,

0:35:190:35:21

please welcome back our people's champions.

0:35:210:35:23

CHEERING

0:35:230:35:27

Well done.

0:35:280:35:30

CHEERING CONTINUES Yes!

0:35:300:35:35

Now, I don't know how you've done it

0:35:350:35:38

because these four fantastic projects

0:35:380:35:41

were probably really difficult to separate,

0:35:410:35:44

but your votes have been counted and verified.

0:35:440:35:47

Without further ado, it's time to announce the winner.

0:35:470:35:52

And the winner is...

0:35:520:35:53

..Aoife and the beach litter clean-up. Whoo!

0:35:580:36:00

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:000:36:04

-Well done!

-Thanks very much.

0:36:060:36:09

-Well done.

-Oh, my God!

0:36:130:36:16

I'm absolutely delighted. I'm ecstatic.

0:36:160:36:19

The competition was incredibly tough.

0:36:190:36:22

Like, the projects were amazing all round.

0:36:220:36:25

All four pitches are going to benefit the local community. And that's what it's about, 100%.

0:36:250:36:28

The projects are still going to go ahead a little bit. For me, we're going to see how it goes.

0:36:280:36:31

Fingers crossed, we can keep it going through other means,

0:36:310:36:33

but we're definitely going to go ahead with it anyway.

0:36:330:36:35

I thought all the presenters did exceptionally well.

0:36:350:36:38

Barry must be a stronger place as a consequence of all the effort that

0:36:380:36:42

they're all putting in.

0:36:420:36:44

-I really am so proud of you.

-Proud of myself!

0:36:440:36:46

Aoife can't wait to tell her husband, James.

0:36:460:36:48

Hi. I have some news.

0:36:480:36:50

We won.

0:36:510:36:53

-Oh, wow, that's amazing!

-I can't believe it.

0:36:530:36:56

That's incredible news. Well, I knew you could do it.

0:36:560:36:59

Thanks a million.

0:36:590:37:01

We became aware of all the different projects that were

0:37:010:37:03

going on in Barry anyway, that I didn't know existed.

0:37:030:37:06

This is not the end of the sensory garden, no.

0:37:060:37:09

We've had a couple of people in the audience tonight.

0:37:090:37:11

Some people actually came up and want to make donations to us,

0:37:110:37:15

and also we've had a couple of councillors who are local from the area,

0:37:150:37:19

who are going to come in and get mucked in.

0:37:190:37:21

Aoife's project, I'm really looking forward to seeing that in Barry.

0:37:210:37:24

Think it'll make a tremendous difference to the town.

0:37:240:37:27

There have been no losers today. Everybody has won.

0:37:270:37:31

It's been really positive.

0:37:310:37:33

You know, I want to say a deserved winner,

0:37:330:37:34

but it's difficult because everybody deserved to win because all the

0:37:340:37:38

projects were really, really strong, but I think what pipped it for Aoife

0:37:380:37:42

was everybody loves a beach.

0:37:420:37:44

Everybody loves a clean beach, and Barry, that's what they do here.

0:37:440:37:47

They're proud of their beach here

0:37:470:37:49

and I think that's what pipped it for Aoife.

0:37:490:37:51

And again, the community wins.

0:37:510:37:53

Four weeks later and the new board arrives.

0:38:080:38:12

Aoife is keen to get it set up on the beach at Barry Island.

0:38:120:38:16

I won £523.20 and I've been able to buy the board,

0:38:160:38:22

litter pickers for both adults and children,

0:38:220:38:24

and a whole set of gloves so everybody will be safe on the beach.

0:38:240:38:28

Since the pitch I've had loads of support from local businesses,

0:38:280:38:31

local people in general.

0:38:310:38:32

I've been in touch with the Friends of Barry Beaches,

0:38:320:38:35

who've been really happy that something like this is going ahead.

0:38:350:38:38

The Council, too, have been great,

0:38:380:38:40

they're delighted that people are trying to engage like this

0:38:400:38:44

and they've been able to support us.

0:38:440:38:46

Today the beach is looking pretty clean,

0:38:460:38:48

but it's amazing how you'll go out and you'll think -

0:38:480:38:50

"Oh, there's nothing here," but within about two minutes you'll find a lot of bits.

0:38:500:38:54

Once you get your eye in, you'll see it everywhere.

0:38:540:38:57

There's always litter on the beach and it always needs to be collected.

0:38:570:39:00

To officially launch the board in its new home,

0:39:000:39:03

Aoife has organised an inaugural beach clean.

0:39:030:39:05

We're hoping we can make a bit of noise and get other people

0:39:050:39:09

that are on the waterfront today having a go as well, or just asking questions.

0:39:090:39:13

I'm really happy that the board's finally up.

0:39:130:39:15

I've got the litter pickers in and the bags in,

0:39:150:39:17

and we're really looking forward to getting going.

0:39:170:39:20

Thank you so much for coming out and supporting this.

0:39:200:39:23

-Shall I cut the ribbon?

-OTHERS:

-Yay!

0:39:230:39:27

-Yay!

-APPLAUSE

0:39:270:39:30

We love spending time here with our family,

0:39:390:39:41

so we want it to be a really nice, clean, safe, environment

0:39:410:39:43

so we should do our bit to make that happen as well.

0:39:430:39:46

This sort of project is actually saying -

0:39:470:39:49

it's all our responsibilities to keep the beaches and the environment

0:39:490:39:53

-a lot cleaner.

-I think most people would be really behind the idea of

0:39:530:39:57

picking up just a little bit of litter off the beach,

0:39:570:39:59

but you don't always have the equipment to do it.

0:39:590:40:02

So you don't really want to put your hands in other people's rubbish.

0:40:020:40:04

So actually, just having these

0:40:040:40:06

gloves and these pickers easily available

0:40:060:40:08

as you walk onto the beach, it's going to make a massive difference.

0:40:080:40:11

See, things like this, this is possibly a lollipop stick,

0:40:130:40:16

but it's probably actually the stick of an ear bud.

0:40:160:40:19

You shouldn't find that on this beach,

0:40:190:40:21

but it's been washed up with the tides.

0:40:210:40:24

Such a brilliant idea. I can't believe no-one's thought of it before.

0:40:240:40:26

I'm really pleased and proud that we've got a two-minute beach clean board on Barry Island now.

0:40:260:40:30

Everybody moans about the rubbish on the beach,

0:40:300:40:33

but no-one really does anything about it.

0:40:330:40:34

This is going to push people to help out and to clean the beaches up.

0:40:340:40:37

Husband James and baby Brecon are backing Aoife all the way.

0:40:400:40:44

I'm really proud of Aoife.

0:40:440:40:45

I expected her to do well, she's really good at this kind of thing.

0:40:450:40:48

She's obviously won the funding from the event, and that's gone really

0:40:480:40:52

well, and today we've had plenty of people down here.

0:40:520:40:56

I'm really pleased.

0:40:560:40:57

A beach front chip shop is so impressed by Aoife's campaign

0:40:570:41:00

that they've offered to store the board overnight,

0:41:000:41:03

and they are inspired to be greener in other ways, too.

0:41:030:41:06

We've recently changed all of our packaging.

0:41:060:41:08

We've changed from polystyrene to recyclable cardboard.

0:41:080:41:11

So, we helped her out today,

0:41:110:41:12

just to make sure the beach was left clean and tidy.

0:41:120:41:16

By doing this we're getting people to get excited about the idea of looking after their own environment.

0:41:160:41:20

This is their beach. It's great.

0:41:200:41:23

It certainly is great, but what about the runners-up?

0:41:230:41:26

Sean wanted to set up free family fitness sessions

0:41:260:41:30

and he needed funds to hire indoor venues.

0:41:300:41:32

Even though I didn't walk away with the money,

0:41:320:41:34

the main thing for me was being there and trying to spread the word

0:41:340:41:37

about what I'm doing, and it's been fantastic.

0:41:370:41:39

I've had meetings with local councillors,

0:41:390:41:41

they're really keen to get something going now through the summer,

0:41:410:41:44

which is fantastic. A lot of my stuff is going to be done outdoors

0:41:440:41:46

and that way we can keep the sort of cost down on it as well, if we can,

0:41:460:41:49

which is great, so everybody can get involved.

0:41:490:41:52

No, it's going to be really fantastic.

0:41:520:41:53

Karl-James Langford wanted to put up signs around the site of medieval ruins on the outskirts of Barry.

0:41:530:42:00

People do care about Barry,

0:42:000:42:01

people do care about what's going on, and there are people who want to

0:42:010:42:05

help, and that help has come in our direction.

0:42:050:42:09

People wanting to not only give their time,

0:42:090:42:12

but there is funding out there, as well.

0:42:120:42:14

So, I'm not daunted by not winning the money,

0:42:140:42:17

I'm actually enthused by the fact there was enthusiasm in the room.

0:42:170:42:22

And Nicky wanted to create a sensory space within the Barry Community Garden.

0:42:220:42:27

It's been really good, people are getting involved.

0:42:270:42:30

There were some people in the audience who have come down and got involved

0:42:300:42:33

in the gardens. We had somebody come down and made a cash donation a few days later.

0:42:330:42:38

We're hoping to go out and to start us off to buy £100 worth of sensory flowers.

0:42:380:42:44

It's amazing, I'm so happy.

0:42:440:42:48

Great things happen when communities get together.

0:42:480:42:51

What are the possibilities for your area?

0:42:510:42:53

I think if you've got a community project that you're thinking about,

0:42:530:42:56

just go for it. Use social media, find your people.

0:42:560:43:00

They're out there, they're looking for you, you're looking for them.

0:43:000:43:02

If you think it's going benefit your community,

0:43:020:43:05

then don't let anything hold you back

0:43:050:43:06

because it's as easy as starting a conversation, and you can do it.

0:43:060:43:11

If I can do it, you can do it.
