As a parent, you want to do the best you can. And we're not in a position to do that. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:07
We're in Cumbria to help a family in desperate need... | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
You just can't see a way out of it. It's got to that stage now. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
We're getting emotional because it means a lot. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
..who have a little boy that wasn't supposed to survive. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:25
Because of his condition they told us he may not live. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
That's it. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
Noah has defied every expectation of him. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Amazing! | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
To think this little boy has been through | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
so much in his short life, and he's just so happy, so smiley. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
But now the family are trapped in a house that's hurting their son. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:51
I'd love for him to be, to be able to get from room to room. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
But you can't. It's horrible. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
It's an awful thing. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
It's a 280-year-old wreck. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Every single room has had a different problem. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
And it's going to push every one of us. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
It's like pulling a thread on a jumper, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
it just keeps on going. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
We have the usual suspects with us, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
but being so rural, are we going to find enough people to help us out? | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
That's handy. Are you doing anything? | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
ALL: No! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
-Can you help us out? -ALL: Yes! | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
This is DIY SOS: The Big Build! | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
THEY CHEER | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
Oh, beautiful boy. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Rob and Michelle Wall live in Cumbria with their 15-month-old son, Noah. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
Jumpy arm! | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
And Michelle's daughters Ali and Steph from a previous marriage. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Always wanted to be a dad, and this one saying "Dad" is just incredible. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:01
But this longed-for little boy has defied all the odds to be here. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:11
At their three-month scan, Michelle and Rob had news every parent dreads. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
The nurse was really nice very chatty, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
and then all of a sudden she started going quiet, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
and it was silence, and we looked at each other and we kind of... | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
My stomach churned. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
You know when somebody's like that and they've stopped talking, you know... | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
What's wrong? | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
"I'm just going to go and get someone," she said, "I need them | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
"to double-check something." | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
And then they confirmed what they saw, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
they said it was severe spina bifida. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
Spina bifida is a fault in the development of the spine | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
while the baby is in the womb. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
It meant Noah's spine was split open, and the prognosis wasn't good. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:06
Because of his condition they'd told us, "He may not live." | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
They couldn't say, you know, whether it be 20 seconds, 20 minutes, 20 years. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
We just wanted this baby so much. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
It was loved. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
We knew we would do whatever needed to be done for this baby to be happy. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
Because of the bleak prognosis, Rob and Michelle made a heartbreaking | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
decision no parent should have to face, plan their child's funeral. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
We sat in the funeral parlour, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Michelle pregnant with Noah inside, and Noah had hiccups. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
That's it. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:39
It's like I'm going back. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
Incredibly, Noah survived the birth and multiple surgeries, but | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
he's paralysed from the chest down and it's likely he'll never walk. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
That's Noah's scar. It goes quite... | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
goes to the top of his bum there, look. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
Shortly after his birth the family got even more devastating news. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
A cyst whilst he was in the womb had caused catastrophic damage | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
to his brain, and only 2% remains. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
Noah has only got a very tiny piece of brain which runs just at | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
the front here, and the rest of his head is actually filled with fluid. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
So to only have a really tiny piece of your brain, and do | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
the things that you do is pretty amazing. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:45
-IN BABY TALK: -Amazing. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
Yes. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49 | |
Despite this enormous hurdle, Noah is confounding all expectations. The | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
doctors can't say exactly how, but he can see, hear and communicate. | 0:04:54 | 0:05:00
He's just so curious about everything, it's fascinating. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
Light...light. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
He's saying, "Look, look light," it's just unbelievable. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
It's never a dull day with him around, he's always happy, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:14
he's always smiling. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
I love you! | 0:05:18 | 0:05:19
And the fact Noah's paralysed hasn't stopped him trying to move about. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
This is the latest thing that we're doing, isn't it? | 0:05:24 | 0:05:29
Excuse me, what are you doing? | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
But there's a huge threat that could halt Noah's development, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
there are only two rooms finished and habitable enough for him | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
to spend any time in. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
The bedroom he shares with his parents and the front room. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
The rest of the house is dangerous and no place for a child. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
Things fall down from the ceiling, you can | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
see down to bare plaster, there's open pipe work, no heating | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
in here whatsoever. Concrete falls, not a nice environment, really. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:59
We have to do this every day, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
The wall being bare brick, it just falls off. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Cleaning up is always tiring but it has to be done. Noah could | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
have breathing problems in the future. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
Rob and Michelle bought the house before Noah came along, | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
but a host of unexpected problems with the 280-year-old | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
property soon used up their savings. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Now with a severely disabled child to support | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
the dream of a family home has become a nightmare. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Things kind of ground to a halt, and this is sort of the stage | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
we're at now. It's not progressing, it's bogged down, we've no money. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:39
Without insulation, the kitchen got down to -19 degrees | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
centigrade in the winter and with Rob's modest income from working | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
in a factory, he's been forced to scavenge wood to heat the house. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Our main source of heating in the house is a wood-burner stove and an | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
open fire. It's not efficient, it's the option we have, really, because | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
we can't afford any different way of heating the house at the moment. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:06
But the most distressing thing for Rob and Michelle is the thought | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
that, as Noah will end up in a wheelchair, | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
he won't be able to live a full life in this house. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
There's no way he can get around. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
He'll become a prisoner in his own home. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
As a parent you want to do the best you can as a parent, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
and we're not in a position to do that. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
It's got to the stage now there's no light at the end of the tunnel | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
and, you know, what do you do next, where do you turn? | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
I suppose the main thing at this stage is to find out what | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
we can actually do for Noah, so what is it you need doing? | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
So when Noah's in a wheelchair he can access rooms, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
he can access the garden. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
Erm, just do the normal day-to-day stuff. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
-It's important for his development as well. -Yeah. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
We don't know what he's going to be capable of, the small | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
amount of brain he's got, we don't know.. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
-At the moment he's coming on fantastically. -He is, isn't he? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
Brilliant, he's bright, he's cheerful, he's always happy, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
but we don't know what the future holds, so we have to prepare ourselves for the future. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
-So who knows what you can achieve, little man. -I know. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
-All the guys will be outside, come and introduce Noah to them before... -Yeah. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
..before you head off. That be all right? | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
'So, we've got a load of trades...' | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
You all right, young man? | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
..'and, of course, a few familiar faces. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
'There's Chris, the prince of plaster. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
'Billy, the prince of darkness. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
'Jules, the man mountain. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
'And Mark, the molehill.' | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
We up for it, definitely? | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
ALL :Yeah. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
All right, let's go and do it, then, shall we? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
THEY CHEER AND CLAP | 0:08:48 | 0:08:49
'There's a wreck of a home that needs their help, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
'and the wreck of the team are getting stuck in already. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
'Look at the state of them. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
'We need a plan, what's the plan? | 0:08:56 | 0:08:57
'Designer and architect extraordinaire, Charlie Luxton, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
'is the man with the vision. Yes, Charlie looks like a hippy, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
'he's been known to hug a tree, and he's evangelical about green living.' | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
What's the key thing about this build when you come to design it? | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
There's two things. One is getting round the house, | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
I suppose that's the first thing that is very specific to this | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
family is to try and move around with Noah. As he gets older | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
and bigger, you know, the parents are going to struggle to get him around. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
So the idea of making a house that he can move around in, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
hopefully on his own, that's critical, | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
so the lift, the hoists, being able to get him to the loo | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
and stuff on the ground floor, that's really important. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
It's all about self-respect, isn't it? Yes, you've got | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
disabilities in the family, but if you can try and normalise | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
your existence that seems to be a reasonable aspiration, doesn't it? | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
The second thing is the house is just absolutely freezing. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
Making the house really warm is really important. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
'He's going to talk about insulation again, isn't he? I can feel it coming on. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
'The family have struggled on through winters with only the most | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
'basic of heating from an inefficient boiler and an old solar panel.' | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
This kitchen they had at -19 in there. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
It's what your freezer works at at home. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
So if you put the bread out on the side and went in to warm up, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
the bread would have been frozen by the time you got back. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
It was un-insulated, it's got three external walls and an un-insulated roof. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
So we're now trying to get a bit of a solar system which is | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
really old and weird, a bit of a boiler system tied into some other | 0:10:22 | 0:10:26
bits where they had nothing, so we're just trying to make it work. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
-Right. -And the main thing we're doing is actually insulating the roof, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
completely re-insulating all the loft area, because all | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
the heating they are producing is going straight out the roof. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
All right, so how much are we going to save them | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
by the time we've thermally insulated this thing, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
are we going to halve their bills, what we going to do? | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
We're not really going to save their bills, | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
because, and it's very important this, because they don't heat the | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
house, they heat it with firewood and they don't have a warm house. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
So what we're going to do is hopefully their energy bills | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
will stay the same, but they'll have a warm house. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
See, a lot of people would claim that they were going to save money, | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
not us, we'll tell the truth. We're not going to save them | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
any money at all, and we're proud of it. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
'Nothing like pride in your work, is there(?) | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
'What will make us proud if we can pull it off is what this | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
'house is aiming to look like in just nine days' time. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
'Right, here we go - the kitchen will become somewhere the family | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
'want to spend time. with safe space for Noah to enjoy. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:25
'All the floors will be levelled for wheelchair access. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
'And the new sensory playroom will have state-of-the-art | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
'technology for Noah to develop and flourish. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
'A new lift will lead upstairs to the fully accessible family | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
'bathroom, which will be just across the hall from Noah's new bedroom. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
'Now, up in the loft we're creating new bedrooms for the girls, | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
'and because Charlie Luxton is our designer, the whole | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
'building will be squeezed full of insulation to keep the family warm. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:56
'It's a massive amount to do in little more than a week, | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
'and we've rarely worked on a house as old as this, | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
'so who knows what antiquated horrors lurk beneath the surface? | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
'Oh, there's one.' | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
Hiya. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11 | |
This is Sandy, this is Alan. Sandy is going to take charge. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
Thank goodness for that. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:16
So are we going to get this done, you reckon? There's a lot to do | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
and the plasterers are going to be chasing you round. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Excuse me, can you tell him I've come up with a few ideas, | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
-haven't we, while we've been going round? -One. -One, one idea? | 0:12:24 | 0:12:29
I told a lovely joke, didn't I? I was walking down the street | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
and this guy threw a bottle of milk at me, and then | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
he started throwing grated cheese at me and I thought, "How dairy!" | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
"How dairy". | 0:12:38 | 0:12:39
HE LAUGHS | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
"How dairy". | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
Don't you understand it? | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
'We really shouldn't let him out in public, should we? | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
'Right, back to the job in hand. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
'Now, Charlie, as I've mentioned, loves insulation and he's got | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
'an enormous list of insulation to fit. He's going to need a wingman, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
'someone who'll really buy in into this eco malarkey. Yeah, not him.' | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
He's off. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
'Chris, believe it or not, a safe pair of hands.' | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
Give me that list, I will guard it with my life. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
Yes, that's...yeah... | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
As he dropped it... | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
In a puddle! Yeah, you guard it. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
I'll guard it with my life. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
"Yeah, what could possibly go wrong(?) | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
'That's warmth under way, now for the access. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
'But the problem is that when they built this | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
'house in the 1730s nobody was thinking about fitting a lift shaft.' | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
What's the problem? | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
The lift is going up in this corner... | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
-Yeah, it's... -..But this steel is in the way. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
The opening needs to be much bigger than that. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
What's that holding up? | 0:13:38 | 0:13:39
Well, obviously, these short ends of floor joists go onto this wall, so | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
really what we'd have to do is move that steel back that way. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:49
'Now, steels are put into buildings to support something important, | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
'even if they're rusty like this one. This tiny bit of metal is | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
'holding up the bathroom, so moving it is a huge deal.' | 0:13:56 | 0:14:01
We're going to have to literally rip out all the wiring, | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
all the plumbing, replace all the floor joists and take that steel. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
Take a line of bricks off the top of the wall so that you can get | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
a wall plate in because the joists are going to be deeper and you can't | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
make the ceiling any higher in the room above, so it has to come down. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
All because this steel is here, and if it was here we'd be fine. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
This could be a job breaker, this one. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
'We've got to figure out a solution for the lift, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
'and for a very good reason.' | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
We've got to make the house flow for Noah. We've got | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
to get him through all the downstairs of the house with his | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
wheelchair, and we've got to take him up in the lift. That wheelchair | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
has got to be able to move around on that top floor cos he's got | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
to have full use of the house. We don't want to just take him and | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
put him in one area in the house, we want him to be in the house | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
with his whole family, moving around and enjoying the company. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
But, a house this age, it's all on different levels, | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
it's all higgledy-piggledy, it's sank a wee bit that way, | 0:14:52 | 0:14:56
it's going a wee bit this way. It's an old house. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
I'd rather have this than a nice modern house. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
Look at the character and... it's beautiful. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
'Right now, it's pretty ugly. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
'Not the builder, the building, Well, both, really. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
'We're breaking this building apart | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
'and uncovering some nasty surprises along the way. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
The whole of the landing is slanted. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
Whole bottom chunk of that chimney is sitting on a 1½-by-1 baton. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:23
The floor level is lower than the soil outside, | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
so all this is being taken out and removed from the building | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
just to stop the building being damp inside. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
This big A-frame, effectively holding the roof up, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
is sitting on the tiny wooden lintel. It's a bit rotten | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
and a little bit undersized, I'd say. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
Something is nesting up there. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
Every single room has had a different problem. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
I'm not even joking, you can actually see next-door. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
Whoa! | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57 | |
I do love this idea that they used to build things really | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
well in the olden days. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
It's like no, no, no! | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
'But it's not only the bad stuff we're discovering. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
This is an 18th-century coaching inn, | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
'and some of the things we've found have been proper little treasures.' | 0:16:12 | 0:16:16
There's a very ancient abbey up the road from here, about 600 yards, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
and if you go in the entrance porch way, there's a whole | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
load of these exactly like this, and it's because when all of the | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
monastery that surrounded it sort of fell apart, everybody | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
in the village came and helped themselves to all the stonework to | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
build all these houses and gardens and everything else. Not recently. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
We're talking about over the last 400-500 years. It's beautiful. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:40
'We're trying to make the most of not only the garden | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
'but the surrounding views, so a little bit of surgery is required.' | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
The plan here is to take out all of the tree line along here | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
because there's a field of horses in the background here, which is | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
a much lovelier thing for Noah to look at rather than just | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
a hedgerow. So if we chop it back, they'll get a better view | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
and a nicer garden to sit in during the summer. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
'And, to make the most of that view, we're putting | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
'a window into the kitchen wall, although it's such | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
'a bag of old biscuits, I'm worried it's going to fall down.' | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
Nice. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:14 | |
'We're still scratching our heads about what to do to sort out this | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
'lift shaft situation so Russell, the building inspector, is happy. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
'Time for some bold creative flair.' | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
-We've got a steel here which we'd like not to move. -Yes. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
And we have a stairwell and lift to get in, so my view is, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
because the stairwell is narrower, we take the stairwell up, | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
the bottom of the stairwell up here and... | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
-Oh, no... -..Then we turn left, and we take that bit of wall out. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
Why don't we, cos that is probably strong enough? | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
If we put a wall in from here, a supporting stud into here, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
cos we're putting some stairs here anyway. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
But you can't run it to here, Charlie. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Yeah, but then the point is, if you put a wall to here, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
suddenly that beam is spanning, half of what it's doing, | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
something about an eighth-less load or whatever it is, | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
a quarter of the load, and suddenly it will be strong enough. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
That's a rubbish idea, the building inspector will never go for that! | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
What about this, what about this? | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
Structural stud wall half the span of this beam, and suddenly it's strong enough? | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
Yeah, fine. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07
'I knew he'd go for it. I hate it when Charlie's right. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:11
'But up in the loft, where the girls will have their new bedrooms, | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
'he's definitely messed up.' | 0:18:14 | 0:18:15
Can you see how dark it is in here? It's ridiculously dark. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
'And, having lost the last argument, I'm going to make | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
'the most of this. Charlie has now started to rip out perfectly | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
'good-looking plaster. Chris will not be happy. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
'What kind of eco madness is this?' | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Hang on a second, guys, just hold for a second. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
They've taken all the plasterboard, haven't they? | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
Well, that's the problem, all these houses done in the '80s, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
they look all fine, they've all got nice plaster, | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
but it's just not warm enough, so it's all got to be re-done. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
-Right. -Not enough insulation behind. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:43
You've sort of become Captain Insulation, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
-it's normally him doing this. -No, I'm with him all the way on this one, mate. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
You used to take the Michael out of him for all his thermal thingy whatsits. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:53
Never, never a cross word said against Charlie Luxton. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
Mate, it's a no-brainer, ain't it? The more insulation you put in, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
the less energy, the less heat you have to put into the property | 0:18:59 | 0:19:01
keeps your fuel costs down. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
Yes, but you're now taking down all the stuff that's already plastered... | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
They're professionals, they'll knock it through in no time! | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
-They'll eat it. -You're going to have all this done and thermally insulated and cleared out? | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
As long as we don't get in the way, basically. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
Well, you can't talk enough about insulation, could you? | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
The hours just fly by(!) | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
You see, what it's all about, the more you put in... | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
'No, you CAN talk too much about insulation, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
'and I've already had enough. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
'But there is a determination to make this work, | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
'and it's for a little boy who's pretty determined himself. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
'When physio, Jo, first met Noah a year ago, | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
'he could barely hold his head up. After intense work from Jo | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
'and his parents, Noah's potential has far exceeded what anyone thought | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
'was possible when they discovered he only had 2% of his brain. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:48
'It's really quite incredible.' | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
And he obviously loves his swimming. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
Did we kiss the fishy? He loves it, yeah. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:58
Considering the prognosis and the fact they said so little of | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
his brain was active, that he seems like a perfectly normal boy, up | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
to speed with any other kid of his age, it's extraordinary, isn't it? | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
His first scan was... yeah, wasn't very good. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
-Catastrophic, really, wasn't it? -It was. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
He seems entirely with it and awake | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
-and aware and engaging and sings and communicates and... -Absolutely. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
Yeah, he does. He smiles and then | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
everybody's with him, aren't they, really? He's just lovely. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
-Aren't you? -There he is, exactly on cue, very well done. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
How suited to his development was life at home? | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
It was getting more difficult cos as he develops, his needs increase. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:39
Noah's now, he's just beginning to explore a little bit, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
he's just getting a bit of independent mobility | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
with his rolling and pulling himself along, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
so very soon that was going to be impossible in the house as it was. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:56
Do you have a wish list for the house, what would be ideal for Noah? | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
A house that's completely geared | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
so he can independently get himself around, so he can access everything | 0:21:01 | 0:21:07
that any other child of his age would need to. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
So if we give him flat floors throughout, a lift between floors, | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
how much does that make a difference to Noah going forward? | 0:21:15 | 0:21:19
A huge, a huge amount. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:20
If those things weren't done now, then he would be stuck. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
You seem entirely at home in the water, | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
but then with a name like Noah, you ought to be, really, I suppose. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
You should be, shouldn't you? You should be. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
'So we know what Noah needs - | 0:21:32 | 0:21:35
'safe space to develop and continue confounding expectations.' | 0:21:35 | 0:21:40
And with all these wonderful blokes to help, | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
we're leaving no stone unturned. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
It might seem like a lot of effort, | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
but everybody wants to go the extra mile for Noah, | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
and for one of our boys, this is personal. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
Bill, you love at the beginning when you get a chance to meet the family. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
What did you make of them this time round? | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
I was very surprised, I was very surprised | 0:21:59 | 0:22:01
because I know about spina biferous children, and I know about... | 0:22:01 | 0:22:06
Well, my niece had a funeral for her spina bifida baby | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
because it was so bad, | 0:22:09 | 0:22:10
and I was worried and thought, "Oh, this baby is going to be just..." | 0:22:10 | 0:22:14
-Struggling a lot. -A lot, really bad, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
I thought, "Is it worth it when she had the chance to lose it?" | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
But when I met little Noah, | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
I thought, "Yeah, I can see why she fought..." | 0:22:23 | 0:22:25
..why she fought and said to the doctors, "I want my baby," | 0:22:30 | 0:22:34
cos he's absolutely bonny, and he's responded to everything. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
You're going to be a mess when we show this off, aren't you? | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
-You're going to be in bits. -It's, erm... | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
Well, that's what we're here for, ain't it? | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
That's what we're here for, to help people who really need us. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
We're all starting to realise | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
how much Noah and his family have struggled in this house. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
It does kind of break your heart a little, you know, | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
to see...I don't know, people in that situation. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
Well, I've got four kids and they're all healthy | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
so I couldn't imagine how they've lived in this with a disabled child, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
so must be very, very difficult. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
And there's a lot of guys here who know how tough it is to be a dad | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
when you can't give your family what they need. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
I get quite emotional trying to understand | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
what this guy has gone through, | 0:23:24 | 0:23:25
and you don't get your time back with your children, | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
so for him to be stuck in here trying to do it all himself, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
I don't think you can quite imagine what it must be like. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
These magnificent builders have worked like Trojans today, | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
and the progress that's been made is astounding. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
Charlie Luxton's still deeply in conversation about insulation, | 0:23:44 | 0:23:48
lots of insulation already in, | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
new stud work, electric's in. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
Considerable changes here, obviously, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
with the old staircase coming out, the wall taken down, | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
change in the doorway there. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
Window turned into a door, door turned into a window, | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
all this room has been sorted out, | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
and we have this lovely picture window | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
now looking out into the garden. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:08
So, 350 man hours we've put in today. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
All the major structural stuff's done. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
Two days' worth of materials gobbled up today. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
-Problems found. -Problems solved. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:17
And we've even now got a garden and a view | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
onto ponies frolicking in the field. What more could you want? | 0:24:19 | 0:24:23
Good to finish the day on a high, | 0:24:23 | 0:24:24
especially when you start the next day on a low. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
No, not Mark's dancing. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:30
-Don't panic! -Who was panicking? | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
We've got the scaffolders turned up this morning, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
where one of the windows is going to come out, | 0:24:37 | 0:24:39
the wall's all collapsing, | 0:24:39 | 0:24:40
so this man here is going to build some scaffolding for us, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
so we can support the whole building. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:45
Aye, we'll build a 30-foot hold on the other side | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
then we'll beam onto the roof - well, not touch the roof, | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
but beam over them to get the extent of the window over for you. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
-Grand. -All right, pal? | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks, mate, for your help. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
That was last-minute. He just popped in at the last minute and sorted the whole thing out. | 0:24:56 | 0:25:00
That window up there has to go from there to there | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
and then like that, OK? | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
And the reason why, it's not design, it's for practicality, | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
because inside the bathroom, the bath is going to rise up and down, | 0:25:08 | 0:25:12
so we've had to move the window | 0:25:12 | 0:25:13
because the bath would have come up past the window. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
There's also going to be a hoist system to be able to move him across | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
the bathroom and set him down, | 0:25:21 | 0:25:22
changing mat, just, life is going to get a little bit... | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
All this is to make their life a wee bit easier. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
More than a wee bit easier - | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
it means Noah gets to have independence in his home. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
Charlie's other big improvement for the family | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
is keeping the house warm. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
The winter nights must just fly by for his wife. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
Anyway, he's got himself a disciple. Meet Thermo Fred. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:46
So what sort of, erm, insulation is this? | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
K18. Yes, this goes over the studs | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
to stop the split between your insulation. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:53
-Why do you have that? -It bridges timbers cos it's a cold spot. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
-Is that right? -Yeah. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
Fred, Fred! Stops you repeating thermal bridges. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
And it also stops you repeating thermal fridges. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
-Yeah. You've got to take it seriously if you're going to do it. -Oh, yeah. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
'I'm finding this very odd.' | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
Hang on, what's he doing up here? | 0:26:13 | 0:26:14
Coming to join in with the saving of the planet. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
-How is it going with the saving of the planet? -It's going very well. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:20
There's a lot of, a lot of insulation. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
It's like being in a space shuttle. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
I've never, there's half a lorry load of insulation | 0:26:24 | 0:26:27
gone into this lot, seriously. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
I think your love for insulation is waning. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
-It started out very... -No, no! -How many different types of insulation | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
are we using in the building? | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
We're using a sheet material at 75 mil, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
a sheet material at 100 mil, | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
a sheet material at 40 mil, | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
insulated plasterboard, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:44
two different types of rolled insulation... | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
-Three different types of rolled. -Three different types | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
-of rolled insulation... -And the multi-foil, and the multi-foil. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
-Four! -No, and I've just ordered some space therm for behind the pipework | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
-in the kitchen. -No! No! | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
-Why not? -Because it's really, really expensive, it's £90 a sheet. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
Just lag the pipes. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
We're getting about a third of a sheet. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
But who can afford that? | 0:27:07 | 0:27:08
This is my ongoing problem with the whole saving-the-planet stuff, | 0:27:08 | 0:27:12
right, seriously, only rich people can afford to cut their costs | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
by putting all the expensive insulation in. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
-Lag it! -Lag it with cheap stuff! -Lag it. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
What happened to Thermo Fred? | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
No, I'm with you! | 0:27:24 | 0:27:25
LAUGHTER | 0:27:25 | 0:27:26
I'm there. Mate, I'm there. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
You're on the wrong side of the fence at the moment. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
Look, I agree with you it's a good idea to save money | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
by insulating your place and saving fuel and saving the planet, | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
-but nobody can afford it. -Can I just make a point? | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
Can I just say, can I just say... | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
We're not paying for it, it's been donated. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:42
Yeah, but that's not the point. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
Because you need to follow what we do, | 0:27:44 | 0:27:46
and we're encouraging you to do stuff, and can you afford it? | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
The answer is no. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:50
Only rich people can afford to cut their bills. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
Hear, hear! | 0:27:53 | 0:27:54
Thank you! That's from a builder over in the corner, "Hear, hear"! | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
-What do you reckon? -Fair comment, yes. -What do you reckon? | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
-Aye... -He's just come for the lunch, so... -Yeah, yeah. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
LAUGHTER | 0:28:03 | 0:28:05
The problem is, right, the whole thing is a mess, | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
and the people that are going to sort it out are going to be builders | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
understanding it, builders getting better, builders really knowing | 0:28:11 | 0:28:14
what they're doing, like these guys here, they're doing a fantastic job | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
insulating all through here, an amazing job, and they understand it. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:20
You're the dinosaur now, Nick. That's the problem, mate. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:23
APPLAUSE | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
Well put, Charlie. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:26
Thanks, but I need to, I need to lie down now. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
Charlie Luxton for president. | 0:28:31 | 0:28:33
Dinosaur, what did he mean by that, dinosaur? | 0:28:33 | 0:28:36
His heart is in the right place, though. It's insulated, too. | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
This house needs that kind of TLC. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
Getting Noah back into a really warm environment is important, | 0:28:43 | 0:28:47
but not just for Noah. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
She hides it well, but Michelle is also disabled. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
She's struggled with lifelong painful arthritis | 0:28:52 | 0:28:55
which makes looking after Noah... | 0:28:55 | 0:28:57
That hurt. | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
..even more difficult. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:01
I've got arthritis in my left hip, both ankles. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
That's got a replacement elbow in there, | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10
and I've had three knee replacements as well. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
Steph and Ali do everything they can to help. | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
The support from the girls has been incredible. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:20
I couldn't wish for better. | 0:29:20 | 0:29:22
But day-to-day tasks with Noah in a house as bad as this... | 0:29:23 | 0:29:27
Ow! | 0:29:27 | 0:29:28 | |
..are increasingly difficult. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:31
She doesn't complain about her pain, | 0:29:31 | 0:29:33
but a lot of the time you can see she's in pain, and you can see | 0:29:33 | 0:29:36
she does limp more on certain days. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:38
She's got a bad limp cos she's got the new knee in there, | 0:29:38 | 0:29:41
and it's not going to get any better, | 0:29:41 | 0:29:45
so she may well end up in a wheelchair herself. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
But there's always that thing in the back of your mind, | 0:29:48 | 0:29:50
well, what about the future? | 0:29:50 | 0:29:53
Someone who knows that well is family friend Tara. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:58
I've got arthritis too and I don't know how she does it. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
I mean, I struggle to lift my little girl. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
Thankfully, my little girl can walk and Noah can't. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:05
Well, there's that as well, isn't it? | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
But with us doing all this work, what difference do you think | 0:30:07 | 0:30:09
it will make for their lives going forward and for the future? | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
This is their future. They need this house for Noah, | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
because they don't know what he's going to need when he's older, | 0:30:15 | 0:30:18
and it makes me really, really emotional, | 0:30:18 | 0:30:20
because this cannot happen to a nicer family. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:23
And I'm not allowed to paint so I thought I'd bring cake. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:27
-Oh, that's lovely, thank you. -Sorry. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
It all helps. No, it all helps. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:31
Tara didn't only bring treats, though. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
She also brought the sunshine. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:37
How's your thermal levels doing? | 0:30:38 | 0:30:39
Oh, mate, everyone's up there naked, it's that hot. | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42
Yeah, let's not see that. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
Though not these guys, | 0:30:44 | 0:30:45
they're helping to bring the sunshine inside. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:48
What a difference that makes, look at that. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
And we're going to have another one over there. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:55
Ah, there's something about the sunshine that's sent | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
everyone into a silly mood of loveliness. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:02
One, two, three, hup! | 0:31:05 | 0:31:07
Could do with that, couldn't I? | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
Can you see anything? | 0:31:16 | 0:31:18
I can, yeah. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:20
Whoo! | 0:31:28 | 0:31:29 | |
There's a lot of love in the room, a little bit too much for my liking, | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
but there is still work going on. Inside, Jules has got on top | 0:31:32 | 0:31:35
of that lift shaft that was causing us so many headaches yesterday. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:40
Above it is where the new bathroom will be, | 0:31:40 | 0:31:43
and the good news is that the new window is in, | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
so everything else is bad news. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:47
So, what, there's a difference of about three inches in the floor? | 0:31:47 | 0:31:50
This side's higher, that side's lower. | 0:31:50 | 0:31:52
Three inches? | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
The boys have got to rip all this floor out to try | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
and get it level, cos we're putting a semi-wet room up here, | 0:31:57 | 0:32:02
so we've got to get the floor as level as possible, cos we don't want | 0:32:02 | 0:32:04
a big puddle in the corner. There's three inches difference in the floor. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:08
You've had your work cut out, this room, haven't you? | 0:32:08 | 0:32:10
It's been a nightmare from start to finish, this room. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:12
First it started as a window, | 0:32:12 | 0:32:14
then we dropped the ceiling cos the joists were running the wrong way. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
So they were running the wrong way, | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
cos we had to get these big joists here in. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
-To take the hoist. -To take the hoist in. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
So this joist and that one means that the hoist can run | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
across the room to the bath. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:29
Yes. So the floor is next, it's plaster boarding. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:31
-Plasterers are in tomorrow. -Are they? | 0:32:33 | 0:32:35
-Yeah. -Nice | 0:32:35 | 0:32:37
Good. Well done. Keep smiling. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:39
I'm trying. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:40
Downstairs, Charlie's ignored all my advice | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
and put in that fancy insulation behind the pipework. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:47
Nick was having a go at me | 0:32:47 | 0:32:48
saying what are you getting this in for, that's a waste of time, | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
but this is the most important bit to lag, isn't it? | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
Anything that's on an external wall, that's not on a cavity wall, | 0:32:53 | 0:32:56
there's no insulation in between the two. | 0:32:56 | 0:33:00
So getting it in behind that pipework is absolutely spot on. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:03
Plainly, you cannot get enough insulation. | 0:33:03 | 0:33:05
Yes, but it's still too expensive. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
With this new heating system, though, the family won't have | 0:33:08 | 0:33:11
to scavenge wood and freeze in the winter any more. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:14
But we're also giving them wood burning fires | 0:33:14 | 0:33:17
and Charlie is concerned about exactly what's going | 0:33:17 | 0:33:21
to go up in smoke. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:22
So this is your parents' house? | 0:33:22 | 0:33:24
This is my mum and dad's house, I was born here. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:26
-Brought up here. -Yep. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:28
-Wow. -48 years ago. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:30
-OK, family home. -Yeah, family home. | 0:33:30 | 0:33:33
So where's the wood? Round the back, is it? | 0:33:33 | 0:33:35
-Yeah, down in the back garden. -Let's have a look. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:37
Now the big problem with open fires is they're just, | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
A, they're so inefficient. | 0:33:40 | 0:33:41
They're sort of 15-20%, something like that efficient, | 0:33:41 | 0:33:45
and then you've got a great big hole, | 0:33:45 | 0:33:47
and when it's not got smoke going up it, | 0:33:47 | 0:33:49
it's got all the hot air of the house. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:51
Stripping all the air out of the house, yeah. | 0:33:51 | 0:33:53
But a lot of this doesn't look like great burning wood, does it? | 0:33:53 | 0:33:55
I mean, this has got varnish on it. Are you burning all of it? | 0:33:55 | 0:33:59
Yeah, it will all get burnt. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:00
Anything with paint or varnish on, we've got an open fire | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
so we burn it on there. Wood burners, the metal pipes | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
really get messed up with all the treated stuff, | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
so anything without treatment on, we'll burn on the wood burners. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:14
But if you're burning this on an open fire, you know, | 0:34:14 | 0:34:17
some of the fumes is going into the house. | 0:34:17 | 0:34:20
-Yeah. -That's not great, is it? | 0:34:20 | 0:34:22
No, it's not. It's needs must at the moment. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
You don't really feel you have an option other than to burn that? | 0:34:25 | 0:34:28
No, you do what you've got to do. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:30
Heat is the main thing for us at the moment. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:34
If there was a way of making it easier or better, | 0:34:34 | 0:34:36
it would be very much appreciated. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
I tell you what, I'd be really happy if we could do this for you | 0:34:38 | 0:34:42
and you don't burn anything with paint. | 0:34:42 | 0:34:45
You only burn virgin wood. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:46
That would be a deal I'd really like to make with you. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:50
Well, I'll make that deal. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:51
OK, we get a warm house, you only burn untreated wood. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:54
Brilliant. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:55
But that's not the easiest promise to keep. | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
We're over halfway through the build | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
and there's an enormous amount to do. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:04
Tomorrow is going to be crunch day. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:06
Morning! Beautiful, sunshiny day in Cumbria. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:15
We're loving being here and it's plastering day. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
This weather is absolutely ideal for it, | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
but how many plasterers will turn up? | 0:35:19 | 0:35:21
Well, there's an easy answer to that. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:22
There's a swarm of them, or is it a spread? | 0:35:22 | 0:35:25
We've got about 16 plasterers and not enough area for them ready, | 0:35:25 | 0:35:30
so I need to run around today and feed plasterboard | 0:35:30 | 0:35:34
for the guys to plaster. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:35
Brilliant. | 0:35:35 | 0:35:37
We thought we were going to have a nice little easy day today, | 0:35:37 | 0:35:40
didn't we, Tone, but all of a sudden, the plasterers have turned up | 0:35:40 | 0:35:45
and it's mayhem. | 0:35:45 | 0:35:46
Yep, they've started at the top of the house in the lofts | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
and are headed downwards fast, | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
straight towards the choke point in the build. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
Hive of activity here, this is the kitchen, | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56
and this has to be plastered this afternoon. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:58
Are we happy, boys? | 0:35:58 | 0:36:00
Yeah. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:01 | |
Are we going to have it or what? | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
Definitely. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:04
That's what we like to hear. Positivity. | 0:36:04 | 0:36:06
Outside, the weather is getting hotter, which means with all | 0:36:06 | 0:36:09
the insulation, inside is getting hotter too, | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
but everyone's sticking to it. | 0:36:11 | 0:36:12
Everyone's staying there and getting on with the work. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
Well, almost everyone. | 0:36:15 | 0:36:16
Our little brother Charlie Luxton. | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
Rumour has it that the reason you're out here | 0:36:18 | 0:36:21
is cos it's too warm in the house. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:25
It's not, it's cos I tried to get up the stairs, right? | 0:36:25 | 0:36:28
Yeah, and you couldn't get between the walls.. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:30
-Stop stirring! -And you couldn't get between the walls | 0:36:30 | 0:36:32
-because there was so much... -Cos it was so hot, | 0:36:32 | 0:36:35
I couldn't break through the heat layer! | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
Luckily, the Cumbrian tradesmen are made of stronger stuff. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
The very sweaty plasterers have made it all the way down to the kitchen. | 0:36:43 | 0:36:47
This is where we wanted to be, kitchen skimmed today, | 0:36:47 | 0:36:50
kitchen fitters in tomorrow. | 0:36:50 | 0:36:51
And despite the impressive heat and the bouncy music, | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
the brilliant tradesmen of Cumbria have sweated their way through it. | 0:36:57 | 0:37:01
Good, innit? | 0:37:01 | 0:37:02
Excellent job, thank you very much, gentlemen. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
APPLAUSE | 0:37:05 | 0:37:07
It's a sunny weekend in the British countryside, | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
yet we've got a building site full of trades working for free. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:15
The local community's come out in force here. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:18
Some of them turned up just for a couple of days | 0:37:18 | 0:37:20
and they've stayed the whole time. For me, that's just great. | 0:37:20 | 0:37:22
Salt of the earth, these people, and I'm very proud to be part of them. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:26
Do you know what, Mark? So are we all. | 0:37:27 | 0:37:29
You've got friends that you'll probably get for life now. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
It's not just about this here, it's about in the future | 0:37:32 | 0:37:35
for us lads and all. You know, if somebody needs a bit of something, | 0:37:35 | 0:37:38
we can say, "We can help you with that." | 0:37:38 | 0:37:39
It's a completely different vibe than any other site | 0:37:39 | 0:37:42
you'll ever work on. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:43
Oh, yes. The best building site we've been on. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:45
-Really? -Yeah, definitely. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:48
You think about doing your job for a completely different reason | 0:37:48 | 0:37:51
-than everyday work. -Yeah. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:55
Cos a lot of us, we knew there were problems, | 0:37:55 | 0:37:58
but you know, we didn't know how many problems they actually had, | 0:37:58 | 0:38:01
so the more that you get to know a little bit about the family, | 0:38:01 | 0:38:03
the more that you want to sort of get stuff done for them and that. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:06
People always say that there's no community left any more, | 0:38:06 | 0:38:09
but you only have to look around at what's going on here, | 0:38:09 | 0:38:11
and this will have been done by not us, but by you lot. | 0:38:11 | 0:38:14
This is her community coming together around her, and doing this. | 0:38:14 | 0:38:19
As the week's progressed, | 0:38:19 | 0:38:21
the pride in what I'm doing has become more apparent, | 0:38:21 | 0:38:24
because you know that you're going to make a difference to this family. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:28
And it's a family that's had a lot to deal with. | 0:38:30 | 0:38:33
As well as looking after Noah, Michelle spends a lot of time | 0:38:33 | 0:38:36
campaigning for spina bifida awareness, | 0:38:36 | 0:38:39
in the hope that other families don't have to face | 0:38:39 | 0:38:42
the same situation. | 0:38:42 | 0:38:43
It's clear she's carrying a huge weight on her shoulders. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:47
You're an incredibly driven person, aren't you, with Noah | 0:38:49 | 0:38:53
and with the charity work that you do. Why is that? | 0:38:53 | 0:38:56
Someone should have told me and they didn't. | 0:38:56 | 0:39:00
Told you what? | 0:39:01 | 0:39:03
That I should have taken folic acid three months before pregnancy | 0:39:03 | 0:39:07
and I could have reduced Noah's spina bifida by 72%. | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
So you feel responsible? | 0:39:10 | 0:39:12
Yeah, I do. I feel really guilty that Noah is like that. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
But millions and millions and millions of people have been born | 0:39:17 | 0:39:21
before people knew about folic acid. | 0:39:21 | 0:39:23
I'm not saying that you're wrong, and if it's a fact, it's a fact, | 0:39:25 | 0:39:29
but it's not your fault. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:30
I won't ever get a chance to make it right... | 0:39:30 | 0:39:36
so then I've got to tell everyone every day. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:41
But there has to come a point where you have to stop blaming yourself, | 0:39:44 | 0:39:47
because it doesn't benefit in any way at all, does it? | 0:39:47 | 0:39:50
It will get easier. Time. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:54
You have the most beautiful boy. | 0:39:56 | 0:39:58
Thank you. | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
But you do, don't you, and you know you do. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:02
He's gorgeous. I love him so much. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:05
Which is why he's doing so well. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
Well, I'll make you a deal then. We will hand you back a house | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
that will have all the things you need to go forward | 0:40:13 | 0:40:15
and to give Noah every opportunity, if you'll stop blaming yourself | 0:40:15 | 0:40:20
for something that you couldn't have done anything about | 0:40:20 | 0:40:24
in the first place, cos you've got to stop doing that. | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
It seems like a fair deal. | 0:40:31 | 0:40:34
Can I have a day off then? | 0:40:34 | 0:40:36
Having this house finished will hopefully let Michelle and Rob | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
look forward to a brighter future with Noah. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
And it's a really good sign that the kitchen fitters have made it in. | 0:40:49 | 0:40:53
Even our Achilles heel is on the mend. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
We are in the bathroom, | 0:40:59 | 0:41:02
which has been probably the most difficult room in the house | 0:41:02 | 0:41:05
to complete. Boys have been in here, I won't tell you how long, | 0:41:05 | 0:41:08
but you're nearly on your way out now, aren't you? | 0:41:08 | 0:41:10
The doorway's there and I'm working that way. | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
And good old Charlie, he's come up with a really simple solution | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
to tile the bathroom really quickly. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:18
Thanks, Charlie! | 0:41:19 | 0:41:21
Yeah, good luck with that, mate! | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
It's going to be a long night | 0:41:24 | 0:41:25
but this house is about to start looking like a home again. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:29
Morning! | 0:41:39 | 0:41:41
Hard to believe he's 64, isn't it? | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
Where better to be than sitting here kicking my heels | 0:41:45 | 0:41:48
on a dry stone wall in Cumbria admiring the countryside, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
and pondering the fact that we can turn up to somewhere | 0:41:50 | 0:41:52
as rural as this, and sparsely populated, and stick our hands up | 0:41:52 | 0:41:56
and say, "Can anybody help us?" | 0:41:56 | 0:41:57
And 60 people turn up every day to perform a minor miracle | 0:41:57 | 0:42:01
and turn this house around for a very lovely family, | 0:42:01 | 0:42:04
and do you know what? | 0:42:04 | 0:42:05
I think we're in with a very good chance of pulling this one off. | 0:42:05 | 0:42:08
The thing that will turn this from a house into a home | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
is a little splash of colour. | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
I wonder what scheme the eco-warrior will go for? | 0:42:15 | 0:42:18
Yeah, green. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:19
Of course it's green, it's always green. | 0:42:19 | 0:42:21
Charlie, where are you? Charlie. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:23
-Here. -Charlie, where are you? | 0:42:23 | 0:42:25
I'm sorry, I lost you against the wall then. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:28
So this is the colour for the wall here, is it? | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
Why can't we just, for once, just go for a like a proper out there... | 0:42:33 | 0:42:36
Ooh. That's loud, isn't it? | 0:42:36 | 0:42:37
It's a colour. | 0:42:40 | 0:42:41
Look at that hot pink. | 0:42:41 | 0:42:44
There's quite a lot of memories of this kitchen | 0:42:44 | 0:42:46
as being cold and inhospitable, | 0:42:46 | 0:42:48
so we're trying to move away from that as much as possible, | 0:42:48 | 0:42:51
so you've got the hot, warm red on this side, | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
and if you actually look, these are warm greys. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
There's a little bit of pink and warm grey and all of the colour, | 0:42:55 | 0:42:58
so it does feel like a really nice, warm, inviting room. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:00
There's quite a feminine side to you, isn't there? | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
You're in touch with your colours and your emotions and things. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:07
Are you a man who cries in a rom-com? | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
Yeah, I do. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:10
And now you love him even more, don't you, ladies? | 0:43:10 | 0:43:13
And all the blokes are going, "What a wuss." | 0:43:13 | 0:43:15
We're sprinting to the finish now - well, wheezing towards the finish - | 0:43:18 | 0:43:22
and out the back our outstanding and creative garden designers | 0:43:22 | 0:43:26
have come up with an ingenious way to make the outside | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
wheelchair friendly, too. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:31
-It's all-weather.. -It's artificial grass, | 0:43:32 | 0:43:35
and it's nice and soft for a little kid to go on. | 0:43:35 | 0:43:37
Do you get that sort of, if you fall on it, do you get those burns? | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
You don't. You do on the short stuff, but on this you don't. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:44
-So Noah will be all right crawling round on this. -Yeah. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
-A few thousand plants over there as well. -Aye. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:50
And I hear you've gone off the colour of the shed. | 0:43:50 | 0:43:53
Yeah. A bit bright, | 0:43:53 | 0:43:55
so I think they're going to match it with the reveals on the windows. | 0:43:55 | 0:43:58
All these people that have volunteered to come and do the work, | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
have come and done the work and then gone, | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
"That's not good enough," | 0:44:03 | 0:44:04
so they've asked us to get a different colour paint | 0:44:04 | 0:44:06
to do the reveals around the windows and to redo the shed. | 0:44:06 | 0:44:09
Yeah, so the reveals around the windows will match the shed, | 0:44:09 | 0:44:11
-just to try and link it in, it was just standing out... -Perfectionists. | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
-Yep. -It's not just doing it and getting away with it, is it? | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
No, you've got to do it right. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:18
You've got to do it right, cos at the end of the day, | 0:44:18 | 0:44:20
it's not our garden. | 0:44:20 | 0:44:21
These lot have got to live with it. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:23
We can walk away and not look at that, they have to live with it. | 0:44:23 | 0:44:26
It's a lovely thought, and they all go the extra mile. | 0:44:27 | 0:44:29
From the start, our aim has been to get this house warm. | 0:44:29 | 0:44:32
I think Charlie sorted that problem, | 0:44:32 | 0:44:34
and to give Noah and Michelle independence throughout the house. | 0:44:34 | 0:44:38
The lift is being wired up, the mechanical bath is here, and... | 0:44:40 | 0:44:44
Ta-da! | 0:44:44 | 0:44:46
Look at that. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:48
Now, see, the trick with this is, | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
despite the massive weight that's being held by this, | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
I can with one finger... | 0:44:54 | 0:44:58
Look, I can move him about, take him into the bathroom. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:03
And one thing we're really excited about | 0:45:07 | 0:45:10
is some cutting-edge technology for Noah's sensory playroom. | 0:45:10 | 0:45:15
Noah, when he's in here and playing on the floor, | 0:45:19 | 0:45:22
is able to interact with the floor | 0:45:22 | 0:45:24
and it will move and change as a result. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:27
Look, watch this, look. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:29
So we've got a swimming pool, look at that. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:31
In terms of child's development and the ability to play and engage, | 0:45:32 | 0:45:37
everything is possible. It's fantastic. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:40
And thanks to the hard work of a selfless local community | 0:45:40 | 0:45:43
of tradesmen, tradeswomen and suppliers, this is | 0:45:43 | 0:45:46
a stunning home purpose-built for Noah and his family. | 0:45:46 | 0:45:51
Nine days ago, this house was a crumbling wreck | 0:45:53 | 0:45:56
barely fit to live in. | 0:45:56 | 0:45:58
It was cold, dusty and making the family ill. | 0:45:59 | 0:46:02
For a little boy with a host of challenges, but a boundless spirit, | 0:46:03 | 0:46:08
it was seriously threatening his development. | 0:46:08 | 0:46:11
I just want to give him the best that I possibly can, and I can't. | 0:46:11 | 0:46:15
It's OK. | 0:46:16 | 0:46:18
It was one of the oldest houses we'd ever taken on | 0:46:18 | 0:46:21
and it threw up problem after painful problem. | 0:46:21 | 0:46:24
It's been a nightmare from start to finish, this room. | 0:46:24 | 0:46:27
But a remarkable team of trades... | 0:46:28 | 0:46:31
..buoyed by a pride in their community... | 0:46:34 | 0:46:37
We're all together for one reason, really. | 0:46:37 | 0:46:39
You know that you're going to make a difference to this family. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:42
..worked their socks off for a little boy in desperate need. | 0:46:42 | 0:46:46
And now this house is finally a home | 0:46:47 | 0:46:50
where Noah can live the life he deserves. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:53
The kitchen is now a bright and airy space, where the whole family | 0:46:59 | 0:47:03
can spend time together around the new handmade oak table. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:08
We've provided an ingenious snug area | 0:47:13 | 0:47:16
so Noah can play safely while his family are around him. | 0:47:16 | 0:47:19
The kitchen leads onto the new wheelchair friendly garden, | 0:47:23 | 0:47:27
with soft areas for Noah to play. | 0:47:27 | 0:47:30
And raised flower beds that Michelle and Noah will both be able to reach. | 0:47:34 | 0:47:38
The new sensory room is designed to make sure Noah has every tool | 0:47:43 | 0:47:48
he needs to flourish. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:50
From toys to aid him as he gets bigger, | 0:47:50 | 0:47:52
to cutting-edge interactive technology | 0:47:52 | 0:47:55
to encourage his continued development. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:58
Those rickety old stairs have been replaced. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:02
The new hi-tech lift means Noah and Michelle | 0:48:03 | 0:48:06
can have independence through the house. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
And it leads to the new fully accessible family bathroom. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:13
The girls both have their own grown-up rooms | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
where they get a bit of luxury and space to be independent young women. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:26
Oh, and Noah's new bedroom is waiting for him when he's ready. | 0:48:29 | 0:48:33
This house is now a beautiful and functional home | 0:48:36 | 0:48:39
where the whole family can blossom together. | 0:48:39 | 0:48:42
If you're ready, open your eyes. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:51
Oh, my God. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:53
Wow. | 0:48:55 | 0:48:56 | |
My God. | 0:48:56 | 0:48:58
Wow. | 0:49:00 | 0:49:02 | |
I've lost all sense of where I am. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:05
Kitchen, darling. | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
There's the beam, the old beam. | 0:49:07 | 0:49:09
All this for us. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:17
It's incredible. | 0:49:17 | 0:49:18
It's amazing. | 0:49:22 | 0:49:24
Not only do you have a window, you have a view. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:30
We'll be able to see the horses. | 0:49:32 | 0:49:36
Noah will love that. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:37
-It's absolutely beautiful. -It's amazing, it really is amazing. | 0:49:39 | 0:49:43
Handmade table made by a local craftsman, who specifically wanted | 0:49:43 | 0:49:47
to make you a table that your whole family can sit around for dinner. | 0:49:47 | 0:49:51
Christmas dinner in the kitchen at the table. That's all I wanted. | 0:49:51 | 0:49:56
Oh, that is gorgeous. | 0:49:59 | 0:50:03
I never have pictures up | 0:50:06 | 0:50:09
because we didn't have anywhere nice to put anything. | 0:50:09 | 0:50:13
If you come over this way, because it's all about... | 0:50:16 | 0:50:19
SHE GASPS | 0:50:19 | 0:50:20
..access, isn't it? | 0:50:20 | 0:50:21
And making the house accessible to everybody. | 0:50:21 | 0:50:24
Wow. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:26 | |
He's going to be so independent. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:32
Hiya. | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36 | |
See the giraffe. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:38
Oh, they're amazing! | 0:50:38 | 0:50:39
Noah is going to love them. | 0:50:39 | 0:50:42
Oh, my. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:47
It's a full wet room. | 0:50:49 | 0:50:50
-It is. -Oh, no way. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:53
You obviously have a hoist. | 0:50:57 | 0:51:00
It's really easy, and there's different types of slings. | 0:51:00 | 0:51:03
You can get walk slings, carry slings, bathing slings. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:07
It's just perfect. | 0:51:07 | 0:51:09
Yeah, it's a standard bath, but if you want to give Noah a bath... | 0:51:09 | 0:51:12
..then that goes up all the way to the height | 0:51:16 | 0:51:18
-so you don't have to bend over. -That's unbelievable. | 0:51:18 | 0:51:21
It's incredible, isn't it? | 0:51:21 | 0:51:24
When you have a bath, if you can't be bothered to get out yourself, | 0:51:24 | 0:51:27
you just hoist yourself out of the bath. | 0:51:27 | 0:51:28
I can't get out of baths. | 0:51:28 | 0:51:30
You can't get out of baths? You can now. | 0:51:30 | 0:51:32
You can now, darling. You can have a proper bath now. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:36
It's not about me, it's about Noah. | 0:51:38 | 0:51:40
No, it is about you. You're the main carer for Noah | 0:51:40 | 0:51:44
so it is about you. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:46
I've never been in the bath with Noah. I'd love to sit in the bath. | 0:51:46 | 0:51:50
It seems simple, but it means a lot | 0:51:51 | 0:51:55
to just do things like other people do. | 0:51:55 | 0:51:59
Yeah. | 0:51:59 | 0:52:00 | |
Oh, this is so beautiful. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:07
It's stunning. | 0:52:12 | 0:52:14
It's absolutely stunning. | 0:52:15 | 0:52:17
What you could do is you could come in here | 0:52:17 | 0:52:19
and we have a day bed alongside as well, | 0:52:19 | 0:52:21
so that one of you can stay in here or both stay in here and... | 0:52:21 | 0:52:24
-Yeah, it's beautiful. -Kind of important, really. | 0:52:24 | 0:52:26
I'll nip out and get Noah. There's one more important room | 0:52:28 | 0:52:31
I want to show you and it's back downstairs. | 0:52:31 | 0:52:33
What's that, Noah? | 0:52:36 | 0:52:38
Oh, my goodness. Oh, Noah, look. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:42
It's a sensory room and a playroom for Noah. | 0:52:42 | 0:52:45
Try and put him face down in the pond. | 0:52:48 | 0:52:50
Let's switch the lights out. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:53
There you go. Every movement he makes has a reaction. | 0:52:55 | 0:52:58
Oh, wow. | 0:52:58 | 0:52:59
What's that, Noah? | 0:52:59 | 0:53:01
Light. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:02
Light, good boy. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:04
And if he works hard enough... | 0:53:04 | 0:53:06
We have a little pod he can sit in. | 0:53:10 | 0:53:13
This track will also take you through that door there, | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
would you like to have a look? | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
It's one of the big things Michelle wanted was a toilet | 0:53:28 | 0:53:31
-downstairs for him so he could be... -Independent. | 0:53:31 | 0:53:33
Independent, so we don't have to rush up and downstairs with him. | 0:53:33 | 0:53:37
Do you like it, Noah? What do you think? | 0:53:38 | 0:53:41
-Good? -Yay! | 0:53:41 | 0:53:42
In the loft, daughters Steph and Ali | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
have well deserved space of their own. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:49
In you go. | 0:53:51 | 0:53:53
It's gorgeous. | 0:53:55 | 0:53:57
Check it out. Handmade oak bed specifically made for you | 0:53:57 | 0:54:02
to fit into that space. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
New York skyline. You're a bit fond of New York, aren't you? | 0:54:04 | 0:54:08
I'm a bit of a fan. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:10
Oh, my God. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:13
Oh, my God. | 0:54:17 | 0:54:19
I can't believe it. This is amazing. | 0:54:21 | 0:54:25
Look at your view. | 0:54:25 | 0:54:27
I love it. | 0:54:32 | 0:54:34
It's a weight lifted off my shoulders, | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
off everyone's shoulders, cos it's done, | 0:54:38 | 0:54:42
and there's no worrying. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
I'm crying. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:47
And do you know what? Downstairs the house is already | 0:54:48 | 0:54:52
making a huge difference to Noah. | 0:54:52 | 0:54:54
This is the first time he's ever moved himself independently. | 0:54:56 | 0:55:00
Where are you going? | 0:55:00 | 0:55:01
Keep going. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:05
That's it. Clever boy, what a clever boy. | 0:55:05 | 0:55:08
Wow. | 0:55:12 | 0:55:14 | |
That is absolutely stunning. | 0:55:23 | 0:55:25
That's a whole new garden. You can see out into the horses | 0:55:25 | 0:55:28
and the fields, and you've suddenly got this beautiful view. | 0:55:28 | 0:55:32
And cos I know you like to do the gardening, | 0:55:32 | 0:55:34
that's why we've done it as raised beds so it's easy to get to. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:37
I can perch on there, it's a fab height. | 0:55:37 | 0:55:39
Wheelchair access as well for Noah. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:41
Oh, yeah, it's all accessible. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:43
That's the most important thing, you know, to be independent. | 0:55:43 | 0:55:46
It doesn't matter where. | 0:55:46 | 0:55:47
So nice to just come out in the garden and relax. | 0:55:47 | 0:55:49
Wow. | 0:55:53 | 0:55:54 | |
So we made a couple of deals. | 0:55:54 | 0:55:57
What is it that you're going to do or stop doing? | 0:55:57 | 0:56:00
Beating myself up about it. | 0:56:00 | 0:56:02
Yeah. Promise? | 0:56:02 | 0:56:05
I promise. | 0:56:05 | 0:56:06
Or at least to start. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:07
Today. Start today. | 0:56:07 | 0:56:09
And you need to stop burning wood that's got paint on it. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:12
Yeah, that was the deal I made. | 0:56:12 | 0:56:14
Really? | 0:56:14 | 0:56:15
You won't need as much oil and you won't need as much wood | 0:56:15 | 0:56:18
to heat the place because the place is so insulated now. | 0:56:18 | 0:56:21
This should now be the place to go forward. | 0:56:21 | 0:56:23
So would you like to meet the amazing people who did this? | 0:56:24 | 0:56:27
-Oh, God... -Yes, please. | 0:56:27 | 0:56:29
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:56:30 | 0:56:34
Wow. | 0:56:50 | 0:56:51 | |
You've got huge, huge, huge hearts, | 0:56:57 | 0:57:00
and I can't believe you've done all this for... | 0:57:00 | 0:57:04
for us as a family. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:06
Noah will be independent right the way through the house, | 0:57:06 | 0:57:12
and you have done this for us. | 0:57:12 | 0:57:16
We were just in a place where we couldn't see | 0:57:17 | 0:57:20
the light at the end of the tunnel, | 0:57:20 | 0:57:21
so I really can't express how much it means to us. | 0:57:21 | 0:57:25
I really can't. | 0:57:25 | 0:57:26
APPLAUSE | 0:57:26 | 0:57:30
-Do you like it? -Yeah, I love it. | 0:57:38 | 0:57:40
-Do you like the colours? -I love it, yeah. | 0:57:40 | 0:57:43
It's amazing. | 0:57:43 | 0:57:45
-Thanks very much. -No, thank you, mate. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:48
For us, this is just... | 0:57:48 | 0:57:50
I can't really express it. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:52
-We're going to be warm. -You are. | 0:57:52 | 0:57:55
They say we're only limited by our own imaginations, | 0:57:58 | 0:58:01
and if you think about it, if Michelle had given up on Noah | 0:58:01 | 0:58:03
at any stage, we wouldn't now have this amazing, | 0:58:03 | 0:58:06
flourishing little boy, who is confounding expectations | 0:58:06 | 0:58:09
at every level, and that's what these guys have done, too. | 0:58:09 | 0:58:12
Confounded expectations in what's possible in nine days. | 0:58:12 | 0:58:16
And the other thing they've done is not only made a beautiful home, | 0:58:16 | 0:58:20
they've taken away the limitations the house was setting on the family, | 0:58:20 | 0:58:23
and with that freedom, | 0:58:23 | 0:58:24
who knows what this amazing little boy can achieve? | 0:58:24 | 0:58:28 |
