It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:00:070:00:10

just...click of your fingers and everything just changes in one go.

0:00:100:00:13

We're here to help a man struck down by a devastating stroke.

0:00:130:00:18

It's very, very hard, yeah.

0:00:180:00:20

You don't appreciate what you've got till it's gone.

0:00:200:00:23

It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless

0:00:230:00:26

and then seeing my mum get upset and sometimes, it just gets to you

0:00:260:00:31

and...oh, I'm so sorry.

0:00:310:00:34

It's hard, isn't it? It is hard.

0:00:360:00:38

Once again, we're going to need the whole community to come

0:00:390:00:42

together for a fellow tradesman.

0:00:420:00:44

He's kind of one of us, you get to change life for him,

0:00:440:00:47

his wife and the two girls, so are we all up for this?

0:00:470:00:51

THEY CHEER

0:00:510:00:52

We have all your favourite members of the team,

0:00:520:00:54

and Charlie Luxton the environmental designer,

0:00:540:00:57

but where are we going to find people to do this in just nine days?

0:00:570:01:00

Maybe we should shout, "Help!"

0:01:000:01:02

ALL: Help!

0:01:020:01:03

Yes, this is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:030:01:08

This 1930s three-bed semi in Warrington, Cheshire,

0:01:200:01:24

is home to electrician Dave, his wife Anna

0:01:240:01:27

and their two daughters, 22-year-old Emma and Amy, who's 19.

0:01:270:01:31

They've lived here since the girls were born and both Dave

0:01:310:01:34

and Anna worked hard to make a loving family home.

0:01:340:01:37

You look after your family, you're providing for them,

0:01:390:01:41

you've got a home for them to stay -

0:01:410:01:43

you've got to try your hardest, you can't give up.

0:01:430:01:46

A healthy, fit man with no history of illness,

0:01:460:01:48

when Dave woke up one morning complaining of a headache,

0:01:480:01:51

Anna had no reason to suspect it was anything sinister.

0:01:510:01:55

Next minute, I got this phone call saying he'd just

0:01:550:01:58

collapsed at work, so it was a real shock.

0:01:580:02:02

At just 47, Dave suffered a massive stroke and was rushed to hospital.

0:02:060:02:12

To relieve the pressure on his brain,

0:02:120:02:14

Dave underwent emergency surgery,

0:02:140:02:16

where doctors removed a third of his skull.

0:02:160:02:19

Luckily, he woke up, and then it was a matter of whether we could

0:02:200:02:25

communicate with him, and the first thing he did was we made him

0:02:250:02:28

put his thumb up

0:02:280:02:30

and that was he did, he put his thumb up, yeah.

0:02:300:02:34

But the road to recovery has been a long one.

0:02:340:02:37

It's like being in a shell - you know what's happening,

0:02:370:02:41

but you can't do anything about it.

0:02:410:02:44

I mean, I've got some movement in my leg and I'm made up for that

0:02:440:02:47

and my arm, but with my thoughts and that,

0:02:470:02:50

it's like...you can't seem to get out

0:02:500:02:53

what you want to say, it's very frustrating.

0:02:530:02:55

It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:02:550:02:59

just...like, at the click of your fingers, someone can just

0:02:590:03:02

suffer that, sort of, massive impact on their life

0:03:020:03:05

and everything just changes in one go.

0:03:050:03:07

After five months in hospital, Dave is now back at home.

0:03:090:03:13

For the past year, he's been confined

0:03:130:03:15

to the family's old dining room

0:03:150:03:16

where a hospital bed has been shoehorned in.

0:03:160:03:20

It's here he eats, sleeps and washes,

0:03:200:03:22

and is now a virtual prisoner in his own home.

0:03:220:03:26

He can't even get around his garden, that was once his passion.

0:03:260:03:31

The world Anna knew has now been completely shattered -

0:03:330:03:37

she's been forced to give up work as Dave needs round-the-clock care.

0:03:370:03:40

Right, just put your feet on the floor.

0:03:400:03:42

She's pretty much his carer 24/7, like, she's such a loving and caring

0:03:420:03:47

person and the way she's dealt with everything that's gone on

0:03:470:03:50

and how she's looked after my dad, it's just unbelievable.

0:03:500:03:54

I do think that there's not a lot of people

0:03:540:03:56

that could do as much as she does.

0:03:560:03:57

She puts such a brave face on and I just think she's amazing.

0:03:570:04:01

It's very, very hard, yeah.

0:04:030:04:06

But it's not Dave's fault and I don't want him

0:04:060:04:08

ever to feel as though he's a burden, if you know what I mean, he's not.

0:04:080:04:13

It's clear the family have rallied round to do the best

0:04:150:04:18

they can for Dave, but now the simplest of everyday tasks

0:04:180:04:20

have become a gruelling ordeal.

0:04:200:04:24

The family's only bathroom is upstairs,

0:04:240:04:26

so with Anna's help, Dave has to resort to using

0:04:260:04:28

a commode in the kitchen, which is far from ideal.

0:04:280:04:33

I would say that would be the part for me, that, the toilet

0:04:330:04:36

because it's...

0:04:360:04:38

The word you use is the right word, dignity, it's...

0:04:380:04:42

To ask you...like...

0:04:420:04:46

..Anna to do that sort of thing don't come natural to me,

0:04:460:04:49

I don't think it should happen, and I do feel...not ashamed

0:04:490:04:55

but just to take that burden away from her would be fantastic.

0:04:550:04:59

It's a tragic situation that has affected the whole family.

0:05:010:05:04

Emma and Amy have seen their world turned upside down

0:05:040:05:06

and are doing everything they can to support their mum and dad.

0:05:060:05:10

I don 't want to put myself before my dad

0:05:100:05:13

because my dad is very important to me,

0:05:130:05:15

and, erm, sorry...

0:05:150:05:17

I just think that they deserve something back for a change

0:05:220:05:26

and I try my hardest to help them out with that.

0:05:260:05:30

Sorry.

0:05:300:05:32

If that means me putting my life on hold for a little while, I don't mind.

0:05:320:05:35

For such a loving family struck down in a moment of tragedy,

0:05:380:05:41

it's simply not right for them to face a future living like this.

0:05:410:05:45

It's a situation we just couldn't ignore,

0:05:450:05:47

which is why we're here to help.

0:05:470:05:50

So what's the main overarching theme, then,

0:05:530:05:55

in what we try and do with the house?

0:05:550:05:57

Well, for me, it's for getting a bedroom for Dave and a bathroom

0:05:570:06:01

so we can have the kitchen back and we can eat as a family.

0:06:010:06:04

We sit in there, and Mum sits in there with my dad, cos there's no space,

0:06:040:06:07

cos obviously it's, like, the bed and then, like, a chair,

0:06:070:06:10

so unless we're all sat around the bed...

0:06:100:06:12

It is a bit of a squeeze, so, it would be nice

0:06:120:06:14

just to have that extra space so we could spend time as a family

0:06:140:06:17

again and not have to be as separated.

0:06:170:06:20

So, as a couple,

0:06:200:06:22

what do you miss most that the house is stopping you doing?

0:06:220:06:25

Dave sleeps downstairs and I sleep upstairs.

0:06:250:06:27

You miss cuddling up to him? Yeah, I miss cuddles, yeah.

0:06:270:06:30

So we want to try and get that back together.

0:06:300:06:32

SHE LAUGHS

0:06:320:06:33

Yeah.

0:06:330:06:35

Look at his face, "Yeah"!

0:06:350:06:36

HE LAUGHS

0:06:360:06:37

All right, we'll do our best, again...

0:06:390:06:41

All right, smashing - let's get you under way, then, shall we?

0:06:410:06:44

Right, we've had a fantastic turn-out this morning,

0:06:460:06:48

there must be 40 builders here already,

0:06:480:06:50

but make no mistake - even with all this manpower,

0:06:500:06:53

the pressure is on to get the job done,

0:06:530:06:55

because, as usual, we've only got nine days.

0:06:550:06:57

Here we go, so we thought we'd bring the family over to say hello.

0:06:570:07:00

How you doing, mate? Not so bad.

0:07:000:07:02

All right, how are you?

0:07:020:07:04

Are you an electrician as well?

0:07:040:07:06

Yeah, yeah.

0:07:060:07:08

So you're going to be pointing the finger at everything that we do.

0:07:080:07:11

Just get me over there if you want my help.

0:07:110:07:13

You've got a good one here with Ray, he's a good electrician.

0:07:130:07:15

Lovely! Nice to know there's at least one on-site.

0:07:150:07:18

THEY LAUGH

0:07:180:07:19

Right, we'd better get you off or we can't start work.

0:07:190:07:22

Lovely to see you all. Thanks very much.

0:07:220:07:24

The lad you met there, Dave, was a sparkie,

0:07:280:07:31

working as an electrician, so he's kind of one of us.

0:07:310:07:34

You get to change life for him, his wife and the two girls,

0:07:340:07:38

so are we all up for this?

0:07:380:07:39

THEY CHEER

0:07:390:07:41

Lovely, thank you ever so much, thank you, guys.

0:07:410:07:44

It's a real squeeze just to get everyone in through the front door.

0:07:480:07:51

A bit claustrophobic.

0:07:510:07:53

We've got to make this small house bigger for the family

0:07:530:07:56

and this means extending out at the rear.

0:07:560:08:00

To keep the build on-track,

0:08:000:08:01

we've had to get these foundations in beforehand.

0:08:010:08:05

Basically, Colin turned up and did all the groundwork for us.

0:08:050:08:07

Ah, lovely, thank you very much. And the drainage.

0:08:070:08:10

Got all this sorted for the timber frame.

0:08:100:08:11

Very good of you to come in and do this for us, we've got

0:08:110:08:14

half a chance now, haven't we? Top man.

0:08:140:08:16

We've only been here five minutes

0:08:180:08:20

and we've already knocked seven bells out of the place.

0:08:200:08:23

At this stage, you can really start to see

0:08:230:08:25

the huge task we've set ourselves.

0:08:250:08:28

It's going to be a massive challenge to get the house working better for the family,

0:08:280:08:32

and that's down to our designer, Charlie Luxton.

0:08:320:08:34

Handsome, isn't he?

0:08:340:08:36

Charlie's background is in architecture and it will

0:08:360:08:38

take all his expertise to get the house working better for Dave's

0:08:380:08:41

medical needs, whilst retaining the feel of a loving family home

0:08:410:08:45

for Anna and the girls.

0:08:450:08:46

But that's why he's here - to get the balance right.

0:08:460:08:48

So what's your plan? Basically, the issue is at the moment...

0:08:480:08:52

Well, up until now, Dave has been, as you know, having to live

0:08:520:08:55

in the sitting room and kitchen area,

0:08:550:08:57

that's where he's spending all his time.

0:08:570:08:58

And the truth is we haven't got the room to put a lift in

0:08:580:09:01

so he's got to stay down here, hasn't he? Yes.

0:09:010:09:03

We've got to make this like a proper living area.

0:09:030:09:05

The big issue is it's not a big house -

0:09:050:09:07

wheelchair access has been a real problem,

0:09:070:09:09

so we're having to knock a lot of stuff out just to get a wheelchair around.

0:09:090:09:13

We're ripping out the old kitchen

0:09:140:09:16

and building a new timber frame extension to the rear

0:09:160:09:18

to create a kitchen-dining area that the whole family can use.

0:09:180:09:22

This extension will also house the downstairs bedroom and wet room

0:09:220:09:27

Dave so desperately needs.

0:09:270:09:29

The whole ground floor is going to be levelled

0:09:290:09:31

and the doorways widened so Dave has access throughout.

0:09:310:09:36

Upstairs, we're completely re-doing Emma and Amy's rooms

0:09:360:09:39

and the third bedroom is going to become a space where mum, Anna,

0:09:390:09:41

can retreat to.

0:09:410:09:43

Along with all this, we're renovating the family bathroom.

0:09:430:09:46

At the front, we're building in a new, level driveway

0:09:460:09:49

so Dave will have access in and out of the house in his chair - crucial.

0:09:490:09:54

That just leaves the rear. We're creating a fully accessible

0:09:540:09:57

space as Dave loves gardening and it's Charlie's aim to get him

0:09:570:10:00

back out there, which will help maximise his recovery.

0:10:000:10:04

Because he's very much based at the house

0:10:050:10:07

and getting out is very difficult for him,

0:10:070:10:09

what we want to try and do is give him a destination within the home,

0:10:090:10:12

so we're getting rid of this garage here

0:10:120:10:14

which has sort of seen better days.

0:10:140:10:16

That's his man cave. Yeah, but we're replacing the man cave, you see.

0:10:160:10:19

We're building him a new man cave down the back garden

0:10:190:10:22

that's properly insulated, double-glazed windows,

0:10:220:10:24

so he can come down from the house, across this kind of yard,

0:10:240:10:27

which is going to be a Japanese-inspired yard,

0:10:270:10:29

to...man cave here with greenhouse, and then raised beds down one side.

0:10:290:10:35

Then his Acer collection running down this side here,

0:10:350:10:38

so he can really experience his plants.

0:10:380:10:40

Nice. Chelsea next year?

0:10:400:10:43

I don't think so, unless someone invites me.

0:10:430:10:46

Well, who knows?

0:10:460:10:47

HE LAUGHS

0:10:470:10:49

Available for Chelsea and pantomime, I should imagine,

0:10:490:10:52

still even at this late date.

0:10:520:10:54

With Dave's old man cave off to the skip,

0:10:550:10:57

there's no turning back now,

0:10:570:11:00

but the rear of the house is almost as rickety as Dave's shed.

0:11:000:11:03

This wooden lintel is nowhere near strong enough to hold

0:11:030:11:06

the weight of the new extension.

0:11:060:11:08

We need to replace it with a steel one,

0:11:080:11:10

and there's no room for error.

0:11:100:11:11

And let's be honest, Mark can't measure for toffee.

0:11:110:11:14

No, no, no, let somebody else measure it.

0:11:150:11:18

No, Nick, I can do it. Let somebody else measure it.

0:11:180:11:20

No, I can do it. Why are you called "Hundred Millar"?

0:11:200:11:23

Would you mind going and measuring this?

0:11:230:11:25

Because he's always 100 mil out.

0:11:250:11:27

Don't touch that tape! Rip it off him. I can do it!

0:11:270:11:29

No, rip it off him.

0:11:290:11:31

'Measure once, cut twice - that's Mark's motto.

0:11:310:11:34

'Now, people say talking isn't crucial.'

0:11:340:11:36

Rotate that side in, that side out slightly and go out towards you.

0:11:360:11:39

'See? Crucial - made it work.'

0:11:390:11:43

Went like clockwork that, poetry in motion.

0:11:430:11:47

When it comes to smashing things up,

0:11:500:11:51

there's no better man for the job than Jules.

0:11:510:11:54

Just don't let him near your garden -

0:11:540:11:55

not so much as green fingers as red mist.

0:11:550:11:58

Rather than hand dig them all,

0:11:580:12:01

why don't we just cut them all off at the bottom

0:12:010:12:03

and then rip all the roots out with the machine?

0:12:030:12:06

Did you ask Charlie?

0:12:070:12:08

Too late now, ain't it?

0:12:080:12:10

Charlie, the front garden - sorry to interrupt.

0:12:120:12:14

Can we rip all those shrubs out at the front?

0:12:140:12:16

Can I come and have a look? Why?

0:12:160:12:18

Well, in case we save some. Let's go, let's go, let's go.

0:12:180:12:20

You've got a real sensitive touch

0:12:240:12:26

with the living...with living things, haven't you, Jules?

0:12:260:12:29

Well, this is the best way to do it, prune them, and then, erm...

0:12:290:12:32

Regrowth, they'll regenerate...in the skip.

0:12:320:12:36

I think calling that "pruning"

0:12:360:12:38

is incredibly loose use of the word "prune".

0:12:380:12:42

I think the word "massacre" might be...

0:12:420:12:45

No, "prune" as in "it will shrivel up".

0:12:450:12:47

It will shrivel up pretty small... And die. Yeah!

0:12:470:12:49

LAUGHTER

0:12:490:12:51

Hey, look! Dead!

0:12:510:12:53

In Jules's defence, we do need this area

0:12:530:12:56

for access to the front of the house.

0:12:560:12:57

He's not just devastating wildlife.

0:12:570:12:59

The shrubs in the front garden are not the only thing heading for the skip -

0:12:590:13:02

the plaster downstairs is as dead as Jules' veg patch.

0:13:020:13:06

Chris will be busy, then.

0:13:060:13:08

It's tired, right? It's given up.

0:13:080:13:10

The sparkies have put the cables in,

0:13:100:13:12

the plumbers have been, so they've cut little holes in,

0:13:120:13:15

and normally, you can get away with patching it.

0:13:150:13:17

But with this age of house,

0:13:170:13:19

you're better off taking it back to the beginning and starting again.

0:13:190:13:22

And upstairs is no better - it's like a bag of old biscuits.

0:13:220:13:27

I think all the plaster's gone in all the rooms.

0:13:270:13:30

All the plaster's gone in all the rooms?

0:13:300:13:33

We weren't supposed to be doing upstairs that much.

0:13:330:13:35

Says who? Well, that was the plan. Whose plan? THE plan.

0:13:350:13:40

You'd think a programme like this would be planned months in advance

0:13:400:13:43

and that there'd be incredibly intelligent people

0:13:430:13:46

at the BBC doing it. This is it!

0:13:460:13:48

No, no! It's not even this good! It's Mark.

0:13:480:13:52

Yeah, that's it!

0:13:520:13:53

Let's pray for no more surprises,

0:13:550:13:57

and we've got someone who's turned up this week

0:13:570:14:00

to give us a hand with that.

0:14:000:14:02

So, I've often thought it might be a good idea

0:14:020:14:04

to have somebody in touch with God on our jobs.

0:14:040:14:07

I believe so, I've seen your work!

0:14:070:14:09

Nice to see a man of the cloth. Yeah, yeah, happy to help.

0:14:100:14:14

It's just what I used to do in a previous life, so...

0:14:140:14:16

You were a builder first?

0:14:160:14:17

Fitter-welder I started off as at a company in Stockport,

0:14:170:14:20

which is where I come from.

0:14:200:14:22

What do you make of this? Church is all about community,

0:14:220:14:24

and bringing the community together

0:14:240:14:26

and working with the people in the community.

0:14:260:14:28

That's what we get on these sites - community coming together.

0:14:280:14:31

It's fantastic to see a community coming together to support someone -

0:14:310:14:34

having heard about Dave's story, what he's gone through

0:14:340:14:36

and it relates to a friend of mine who had a stroke at 40,

0:14:360:14:39

it really resonates.

0:14:390:14:40

It's nice that we can help his guy

0:14:400:14:42

and it's good to see the community get together.

0:14:420:14:44

Yeah. Really good community.

0:14:440:14:45

What will you be throwing you hand into doing?

0:14:450:14:47

I'll just labour and whatever you want me to do, I'll do it.

0:14:470:14:50

I'm not bad at making tea. Really? Yeah, yeah.

0:14:500:14:52

All right, well, that will put Billy out of the job

0:14:520:14:55

cos that's all he's allowed to do on-site these days.

0:14:550:14:58

It's not just spiritual support we're relying on today.

0:14:590:15:02

Thankfully, the new steel has arrived to replace the old wooden lintel

0:15:020:15:05

so we can start to put some much-needed strength

0:15:050:15:08

back into the rear of the house,

0:15:080:15:09

and get the extension up and attached.

0:15:090:15:12

Not too far out, are we?

0:15:120:15:13

No, it's all right, that.

0:15:130:15:15

It's gone in like a hand in a glove,

0:15:150:15:18

which is always a surprise when Mark's been the one measuring it.

0:15:180:15:21

It's been a full-on first day -

0:15:240:15:26

just look at the expression on their faces.

0:15:260:15:28

But also, look at what we've achieved already.

0:15:280:15:31

It's late, but nonetheless, people are still working,

0:15:310:15:34

all the electricians working in there.

0:15:340:15:36

An opening's been made at this end,

0:15:360:15:37

the steel's gone in up here, loads of plumbing's gone in.

0:15:370:15:40

Over this side, we've taken the chimney out,

0:15:400:15:42

which has made loads of room, and if you follow me,

0:15:420:15:45

we have another opening, two more steels,

0:15:450:15:48

and out here, an extension already.

0:15:480:15:50

Isn't it amazing what people can do

0:15:500:15:52

when they all get together and help each other? Lovely.

0:15:520:15:55

What we've done today is nothing short of a miracle.

0:15:560:15:59

I've heard it said, "He works in mysterious ways" -

0:15:590:16:02

Billy, that is.

0:16:020:16:04

Has it been good working with a man of the cloth?

0:16:040:16:06

You've got to apologise every time you swear - not that I swear,

0:16:060:16:09

but some people swear, and they've had to keep apologising.

0:16:090:16:13

I think he's takes it very well overall. Not a problem. It's OK.

0:16:130:16:16

Let's face it, when He made the world in seven days,

0:16:160:16:19

He must have sworn a few times when He was putting the world together?

0:16:190:16:22

He must have hit a few snags along the way? Got a few sizes wrong?

0:16:220:16:27

"That pine tree I put on the side of that mountain is far too big.

0:16:270:16:31

"I can't see over that roof window."

0:16:310:16:33

There's a lot of building in the Bible, isn't there?

0:16:330:16:35

Jesus was a carpenter. No, he weren't! Yeah, he was!

0:16:350:16:39

He went around the country in his sandals and his robes.

0:16:390:16:42

He was Joseph's apprentice.

0:16:420:16:44

Yes. No!

0:16:440:16:45

Yeah, he was! He was!

0:16:450:16:48

If you can get hold a Jesus cabinet, it's worth a fortune now, honestly!

0:16:480:16:52

LAUGHTER

0:16:520:16:54

Yeah, but not many around, though!

0:16:540:16:57

ALL LAUGH

0:16:570:16:59

Morning, day two.

0:17:030:17:04

There's certainly no going back now,

0:17:040:17:07

we've pretty much taken the whole house back to bricks and mortar.

0:17:070:17:11

I haven't really had a look around upstairs,

0:17:110:17:14

but we're cleaning all the various rooms up

0:17:140:17:17

and we weren't supposed to be touching them,

0:17:170:17:19

but as you can see from this room in here,

0:17:190:17:21

plainly, there has been a lot more going on up here than we thought.

0:17:210:17:24

As Chris said, it's kind of doubled the amount of plastering

0:17:240:17:27

that we were going to do.

0:17:270:17:28

That's the nature of the job, though.

0:17:280:17:30

We'll just have to get plasterers in, and more plaster

0:17:300:17:33

and more plasterboard and go for it.

0:17:330:17:35

I'm usually a glass-half-full sort of bloke,

0:17:370:17:39

but looking around, there's far more work than we thought.

0:17:390:17:42

It's bad news and there's plenty more to go around this morning.

0:17:420:17:45

We have an issue already.

0:17:450:17:47

You know your garden room,

0:17:470:17:49

your insulated man cave that you were going to build? Yeah.

0:17:490:17:53

Not happening. Why?

0:17:530:17:54

Cos the guy that was going to build it has pulled out. Really?

0:17:540:17:59

I'm not even winding you up.

0:17:590:18:00

We've just had a message through that he's not turning up.

0:18:000:18:03

He was going to come and build that and he's not going to do it now.

0:18:030:18:06

You're not winding me up? That's what's happened.

0:18:060:18:08

You're very suspicious of me!

0:18:080:18:09

But the truth of the matter is it is bad news for you

0:18:090:18:12

and bad news for the build, because it is an important part of the build

0:18:120:18:15

that he has that sort of man space to operate in.

0:18:150:18:17

But at the moment, it's looking like it's not going to happen.

0:18:170:18:20

It's a blow.

0:18:200:18:22

We all know how vital these features are going to be for Dave.

0:18:220:18:25

No-one more so than his best mate, Garry,

0:18:250:18:28

who's helping us out this week with the electrics.

0:18:280:18:31

The long and short of it is

0:18:310:18:32

you've known Dave for a long time, haven't you?

0:18:320:18:34

I have. I've known him since '92.

0:18:340:18:36

I first knew him working alongside him as an electrician.

0:18:360:18:40

We got to become good friends, really decent lad.

0:18:400:18:43

I was majorly shocked when I got the phone call

0:18:430:18:45

to say he'd dropped down in work,

0:18:450:18:47

and the first thing I did was went over to Anna to Arrowe Park

0:18:470:18:50

to see her at the hospital

0:18:500:18:52

and the biggest shock, as you can imagine.

0:18:520:18:54

How have they managed as a family, do you think?

0:18:540:18:57

I think that Anna's done marvellous,

0:18:570:18:59

the girls, being involved the way they are and everything else.

0:18:590:19:02

I'm just glad that he's going to get what he deserves.

0:19:020:19:06

For you, as his mate, to see all these people turn up

0:19:060:19:09

and get stuck into the house.

0:19:090:19:11

It is dramatically going to turn his life around,

0:19:110:19:14

so I can't wait to see his face.

0:19:140:19:16

Aw... I can't wait to see his face.

0:19:160:19:19

You know, the fact that Dave was an electrician has really hit home

0:19:210:19:25

for everybody on-site and they're all there to give a fellow tradesman

0:19:250:19:28

the helping hand he desperately needs -

0:19:280:19:31

which is lucky, as Dave's all-important man cave

0:19:310:19:33

in the garden fell through earlier.

0:19:330:19:35

Maybe the team who put up our timber frame could step in

0:19:350:19:38

and do us one last favour.

0:19:380:19:39

PHONE RINGS

0:19:390:19:41

John, we've got a problem, I hope you might be able to help us.

0:19:410:19:44

We were having a garden room built at the back of the house,

0:19:440:19:47

and the gentlemen who was doing it

0:19:470:19:48

has to pull out off the job because his wife's taken really ill.

0:19:480:19:52

And we're wondering if there was any chance

0:19:520:19:54

you could make a frame up for it?

0:19:540:19:55

Basically, could you make us another tiny timber-frame house for the back garden?

0:19:550:19:59

You are a gentleman. Thank you very much indeed.

0:20:000:20:03

Briefly, what we're talking about - 8-9 metres...

0:20:030:20:05

It's been cut... What's happened, Charlie?

0:20:050:20:08

It was somebody else with a similar name!

0:20:080:20:11

Oh, John!

0:20:110:20:12

LAUGHTER

0:20:120:20:15

It's all on. It's all all right, don't worry, mate.

0:20:150:20:18

The guy's back on. It was someone with the same name

0:20:180:20:20

that pulled out of the job.

0:20:200:20:22

Flipping 'eck.

0:20:220:20:23

You know, with so many trades turning up on these jobs,

0:20:250:20:28

I'm amazed things like that don't happen more often.

0:20:280:20:31

But it is a relief as the man cave

0:20:310:20:33

is going to give Dave a chance to claw back

0:20:330:20:35

some of the independence he's lost.

0:20:350:20:38

For a man as active as Dave, who was so passionate about gardening,

0:20:380:20:41

and loved to go out dancing with Anna,

0:20:410:20:43

it must be all the harder to come to terms with his situation.

0:20:430:20:47

I'm not sure how you begin to get your head around it,

0:20:470:20:50

but I do know he takes great solace with his weekly meetings

0:20:500:20:52

at a local support group who have helped him to try and find a way

0:20:520:20:55

of dealing with life since the stroke.

0:20:550:20:58

Being that man who provided and looked after the family,

0:21:000:21:03

it must be that much harder then to come to terms

0:21:030:21:05

with the situation you're in now?

0:21:050:21:07

I've come to terms with the stroke.

0:21:070:21:09

I'm just glad I had the chance to have some life,

0:21:110:21:14

if you know what I mean, because last year,

0:21:140:21:16

there was a possibility I might not be here,

0:21:160:21:21

and if you've got that situation there

0:21:210:21:25

where you're going to completely miss everything,

0:21:250:21:28

to what you are now, with maybe a few disabilities,

0:21:280:21:33

I'd take that every time.

0:21:330:21:35

I've got to think to myself, "I've had a stroke."

0:21:350:21:40

It is...how can I say?

0:21:400:21:42

It's a massive thing in my life,

0:21:420:21:45

but I've got to push on.

0:21:450:21:47

I know you're a man who takes a great deal of pride

0:21:470:21:49

in his independence.

0:21:490:21:51

How tough is it that Anna has had to become your carer?

0:21:510:21:54

I think she's been brilliant.

0:21:540:21:56

I feel, sometimes, I wish I could do more for her

0:21:560:21:59

because she deserves it, she works so hard, and, um...

0:21:590:22:03

Hell of a girl you've got there.

0:22:050:22:06

I have. I've got the best, and that's the truth, that.

0:22:060:22:08

I've got the best.

0:22:080:22:11

I mean, next year, 25 years' marriage.

0:22:110:22:14

Who could ask for more?

0:22:140:22:15

For a fantastic woman,

0:22:150:22:17

you know, a good friend,

0:22:170:22:19

good family friend to the kids,

0:22:190:22:21

always done provide for them and all that,

0:22:210:22:24

you can't ask for more.

0:22:240:22:26

I know you know some of your mates are working on the site

0:22:260:22:28

but it's full of people who don't know the family.

0:22:280:22:30

What are you hoping to see when you come back?

0:22:300:22:32

Do you know, not meaning anything, don't take this the wrong way,

0:22:320:22:36

I'm not bothered about seeing anything, really.

0:22:360:22:39

It's...as long as things are all right for Anna,

0:22:390:22:43

they'll be fine for me.

0:22:430:22:45

Cos at the end of the day, I know you're saying it's all about me,

0:22:450:22:48

but it's all about me wife, and if that can help her

0:22:480:22:53

to keep us going, and our relationship,

0:22:530:22:55

that would be great, that would be fantastic.

0:22:550:22:58

I know Dave struggles with the fact

0:23:010:23:02

Anna has had to become his full-time carer.

0:23:020:23:05

Through it all, I think this is the hardest thing he's had to accept.

0:23:050:23:09

That's why we're working into the night -

0:23:100:23:13

to give Dave, Anna and the girls

0:23:130:23:14

a house that is going to work far better for them

0:23:140:23:17

in all the hard years ahead.

0:23:170:23:19

What a perfect end to the day.

0:23:190:23:21

Floor going in, plasterers all gathered in the front room

0:23:210:23:24

discussing what point of action they're going to do tomorrow.

0:23:240:23:27

Over ten tonnes of concrete is going into the new kitchen and bedroom

0:23:290:23:33

to create a level floor area throughout the downstairs.

0:23:330:23:37

You know, every aspect of the build is designed to relieve

0:23:370:23:40

some of the pressures the whole family are under every day,

0:23:400:23:43

a situation Dave's friend

0:23:430:23:45

and fellow electrician, Ray, knows only too well.

0:23:450:23:48

What do you think he'll make of this?

0:23:480:23:50

He'll be made up, cos he can get access

0:23:500:23:52

to all the parts of his house now,

0:23:520:23:54

into the garden and into this room, as well.

0:23:540:23:57

99% of the people that's on this build

0:23:580:24:01

don't know David, Anna and the girls.

0:24:010:24:04

It will hopefully get them back up and running, quick as possible.

0:24:040:24:08

When he knows that people from out of town who don't know him

0:24:090:24:13

have spent two weeks on the build helping out,

0:24:130:24:15

he will get a bit emotional, I think.

0:24:150:24:18

Inspiring, isn't it?

0:24:230:24:26

That's it. It's in the bag, isn't it?

0:24:260:24:27

Floor's in and levelled out. Isn't it mad?

0:24:270:24:30

Tomorrow, we're boarding and skimming all this area,

0:24:300:24:33

and then, the following day,

0:24:330:24:35

there'll be a kitchen exactly where I'm standing.

0:24:350:24:38

Proper job. Proper job.

0:24:400:24:42

We're at the halfway point now,

0:24:450:24:47

the whole house is being boarded from top to bottom

0:24:470:24:50

so we can start to get some plaster on the walls.

0:24:500:24:53

And in the garden, the team have started on Dave's awesome man cave.

0:24:530:24:56

Now, Charlie tells me he's never designed a garden before,

0:24:560:24:59

and although it doesn't look much yet,

0:24:590:25:02

if Charlie pulls this off, it really could propel his career

0:25:020:25:05

to the stratospheric heights of Titchmarsh and Beardshaw.

0:25:050:25:09

Dare to dream, Charlie! Dare to dream.

0:25:090:25:11

Do you know what I want in life?

0:25:110:25:13

I want a giant pair of scissors and I want to open a supermarket.

0:25:130:25:16

Do you really? Yeah, have you ever opened a supermarket?

0:25:160:25:18

No-one's ever asked me. I'd quite like to open a...

0:25:180:25:20

Not sure there's so much supermarket opening going on, these days. Seems a shame, though.

0:25:200:25:24

Let's see if we can find a pair of giant scissors and a ribbon to cut,

0:25:240:25:27

you could open this garden before we show it off.

0:25:270:25:29

I'd love to - anything with a giant scissors and ribbons,

0:25:290:25:32

I'd be happy. Made up.

0:25:320:25:33

BOTH LAUGH

0:25:330:25:36

Anything to make you happy, Charlie.

0:25:360:25:38

Outside, Billy's involved in a meeting of minds.

0:25:380:25:42

CHILD: Thank you for your help, Billy.

0:25:420:25:44

Oh, thank you very much.

0:25:440:25:47

Oh, were these made at the weekend? Yes. Ta, princess. Thank you, kids.

0:25:470:25:52

Right, guys, what have we got to say to all of the builders?

0:25:520:25:55

Why have you come down? Thank you.

0:25:550:25:58

Thank you very much. Pardon? Thank you!

0:25:580:26:02

Sorry? THANK YOU!

0:26:020:26:05

Oh, thank you! Who's got a skateboard? Not me.

0:26:050:26:10

I got on my grandson's a skateboard the other day,

0:26:100:26:13

and I come down the path,

0:26:130:26:15

and I hit some steps and I fell into a load of rubble.

0:26:150:26:18

When I went to the doctor's,

0:26:180:26:21

I told him it hurt when I touch there, it hurt when I touch there,

0:26:210:26:24

and it hurt when I touch there.

0:26:240:26:26

Do you know what he said?

0:26:260:26:27

I broke me finger.

0:26:270:26:28

LAUGHTER

0:26:280:26:30

Tough crowd, Billy. Tough crowd.

0:26:300:26:33

Inside, Chris has got some crowd control issues of his own.

0:26:330:26:36

You know where all the kit is? Where all the gear is? Yeah.

0:26:360:26:40

Excellent Nice one, cheers.

0:26:400:26:41

There's eight plasterers upstairs.

0:26:420:26:44

Chris and his team are getting some plaster on the walls

0:26:440:26:46

to transform this building site into a home, which is good to see.

0:26:460:26:50

We've got to hit these key stages to keep the build on target,

0:26:500:26:53

otherwise, everything simply unravels.

0:26:530:26:55

Working under such tight timescale

0:26:550:26:57

is certainly not good for our blood pressure.

0:26:570:27:00

Jane from the Stroke Association is here to give us the once over.

0:27:000:27:04

You've got the best blood pressure out of all of them. Yes!

0:27:040:27:07

Isn't that just cos he is low? No, it's nothing to do with that.

0:27:070:27:11

He's smaller so he wouldn't have as much pressure, would he?

0:27:110:27:14

You've come to do some blood pressure tests on us

0:27:140:27:17

to make sure that we're all healthy,

0:27:170:27:19

but it was you that wrote in to get us to come to do this.

0:27:190:27:21

When David got discharged after having a devastating stroke,

0:27:210:27:25

I came to do home visits to his house.

0:27:250:27:27

David was sleeping in a hospital bed

0:27:270:27:30

with a hoist there, with a commode there, you know.

0:27:300:27:33

If Anna was doing cooking and he needed to use the commode...

0:27:330:27:36

It's just his dignity, it's his self-esteem. It was everything.

0:27:360:27:40

I've been working for the Stroke Association for ten years,

0:27:400:27:43

and I've noticed people are getting younger and younger,

0:27:430:27:46

and it's happening younger and younger and devastating.

0:27:460:27:49

Because, as I say, with David, he had a great life.

0:27:490:27:52

He was working, Anna was working,

0:27:520:27:53

had a lovely life with their two daughters -

0:27:530:27:55

danced, he was an excellent dancer.

0:27:550:27:57

Then, all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, it's all changed.

0:27:570:28:01

What's becoming clear is just how much disability

0:28:050:28:08

affects the whole family.

0:28:080:28:10

Anna has taken on so much to become Dave's full-time carer

0:28:100:28:13

and I know how much Emma and Amy worry about their mum, too.

0:28:130:28:16

Talking to your mum, probably the most difficult thing

0:28:180:28:21

was going from wife and mum to a carer for your dad.

0:28:210:28:25

I think it is hard for her to deal with sometimes, like,

0:28:250:28:29

cos you've got to think - every morning,

0:28:290:28:31

she's up early and she goes downstairs and she sees to my dad

0:28:310:28:34

and she with trying to move me dad about and stuff.

0:28:340:28:37

It affects her health and she gets tired out and things like that.

0:28:370:28:40

She's still taking care of me and Amy

0:28:400:28:42

cos she doesn't want us to feel like anything's different...

0:28:420:28:45

Like she's not there for us any more.

0:28:450:28:47

We're always saying to her, "We'll stay in with Dad",

0:28:470:28:49

cos we're the only other help there that can let her go out

0:28:490:28:52

and have some time with her friends.

0:28:520:28:54

She doesn't do that very often, does she? No.

0:28:540:28:57

She doesn't like putting on us, but we don't mind,

0:28:570:28:59

but she says, "Oh, no! You're only young".

0:28:590:29:01

She's just being a mum, isn't she?

0:29:010:29:04

Your mum tries very hard to protect you.

0:29:040:29:07

She tries not to show us,

0:29:070:29:08

but she does have her down days, doesn't she?

0:29:080:29:11

She doesn't know who else to speak to, sometimes,

0:29:110:29:14

but we don't mind that, because we're here for her.

0:29:140:29:16

Is that the hardest thing, seeing your mum cry? Yeah.

0:29:160:29:20

Sorry...

0:29:200:29:21

It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless,

0:29:250:29:29

and then seeing my mum get upset.

0:29:290:29:31

Sometimes, it just gets to you and..

0:29:310:29:34

Oh, I'm so sorry. It's all right,

0:29:350:29:37

There's nothing to be sorry about.

0:29:400:29:43

It's a tough thing, it's a lot for you to take on

0:29:430:29:45

at the ages that you are, to deal with these things,

0:29:450:29:48

and at the same time,

0:29:480:29:49

I know that your mum's trying so hard to protect you.

0:29:490:29:53

She's incredibly strong, isn't she? She is amazing, to be honest.

0:29:530:29:56

I don't know how she does it.

0:29:560:29:58

The trouble is, if she doesn't get some time off,

0:29:580:30:00

it's going to wear her out, isn't it? It would be nice

0:30:000:30:02

if you and your mum could get a day out or something.

0:30:020:30:06

And that's the thing I miss most, spending time with Mum.

0:30:100:30:14

BOTH SOB

0:30:140:30:16

Obviously, I'm glad to be healthy and well,

0:30:170:30:20

but we're really close -

0:30:200:30:21

close to Dad, but really, really close to Mum

0:30:210:30:24

and it's just changed, you know what I mean?

0:30:240:30:27

It's hard, isn't it? It is hard.

0:30:290:30:31

If we can get the house sorted out

0:30:330:30:34

and it's a good space for him to move around

0:30:340:30:36

and somebody can come and sit with him,

0:30:360:30:39

I think she might be able to do that, you know?

0:30:390:30:41

If I have one hope, it's for every element of this build

0:30:450:30:48

to enable Dave to do more for himself,

0:30:480:30:50

to take away some of the enormous pressure

0:30:500:30:53

Anna clearly puts herself under.

0:30:530:30:55

I'm starting to see just how vital

0:30:550:30:57

features like the new garden room will become.

0:30:570:31:01

Very lovely, it's like a proper man cave, ain't it? Yeah, yeah.

0:31:010:31:04

So, are we fully insulated? Yeah, this part is fully insulated

0:31:040:31:08

and you've got a double-glazed door leading into that bit there,

0:31:080:31:11

which is going to be a greenhouse, going to put shelving in for him.

0:31:110:31:15

We've got French doors coming tomorrow and we'll ramp it up,

0:31:150:31:18

low threshold, so he'll be able to get in and out, no problem. Lovely.

0:31:180:31:22

The sheer amount of detail going into every aspect of the build

0:31:240:31:27

is a real credit to the Warrington trades -

0:31:270:31:30

every one of them intent on giving one of their own, and his family,

0:31:300:31:34

a chance for a better future.

0:31:340:31:37

So, why did you decide to come and join in and help out?

0:31:370:31:40

Me? Yeah. Um, well...

0:31:400:31:42

I've always wanted to do something.

0:31:420:31:45

My son, he passed away, like, five years ago...

0:31:450:31:50

Oh, I'm sorry. Cancer and that, yeah.

0:31:500:31:52

And when I come in here and I seen the wheelchair and the hospital bed,

0:31:520:31:55

it really, you know, brought home.

0:31:550:31:57

Cos my son became paralysed a few months before he passed away,

0:31:570:32:01

and we had him at home in a hospital bed, you know?

0:32:010:32:04

And we were waiting for an extension to be done,

0:32:040:32:07

but, sadly, you know, the plans got passed after he passed away.

0:32:070:32:11

So, when I came here to meet everybody a few weeks ago,

0:32:110:32:15

that's what made me want to give something back, you know?

0:32:150:32:17

And how are you finding it? Are you finding being involved with this

0:32:170:32:21

and joining in is like giving you something back?

0:32:210:32:23

Course it is, yeah. Very much so.

0:32:230:32:25

Cos lots of people, lots of family and friends helped me and my family

0:32:250:32:29

when we were in need of help, so...

0:32:290:32:31

I'd like to do something for somebody else that's in need, you know?

0:32:310:32:34

Fantastic, thank you very much, mate. Appreciate you coming on.

0:32:340:32:37

Everyone on this build has their reasons for helping,

0:32:390:32:41

but hearing Mick's story is truly humbling.

0:32:410:32:44

Morning. Just a couple of days to go now

0:32:540:32:56

and the deliveries keep on coming in.

0:32:560:32:58

These bricks have just turned up,

0:32:580:33:00

so we can start to lay the front driveway.

0:33:000:33:03

They assure me they can do it in record time,

0:33:030:33:05

but it's not the only record we're breaking today.

0:33:050:33:07

Never has a room been skimmed so fast!

0:33:070:33:10

These guys rocked up two days ago,

0:33:100:33:12

they've plastered the house top to bottom.

0:33:120:33:14

They're stood around. "Is there anything else we can do?"

0:33:140:33:17

I said, "Yeah, there's a shed to do."

0:33:170:33:19

And they wouldn't split up,

0:33:190:33:20

so I said, "We'll all have it, then",

0:33:200:33:22

Look, they've got that on in about three minutes.

0:33:220:33:25

I truly have never seen Chris so proud!

0:33:250:33:28

The plasterers of Warrington have played a blinder this week,

0:33:310:33:34

and we've had so many in,

0:33:340:33:35

they've been almost tripping over each other.

0:33:350:33:37

And talking of treading on toes...

0:33:370:33:39

Dave and Anna were keen ballroom dancers.

0:33:390:33:42

You ever done any dancing? Terrible. I'm a really bad dancer.

0:33:420:33:45

But you're quite light on your feet for a big fella. I am,

0:33:450:33:48

but I haven't got no rhythm.

0:33:480:33:49

I've got medals for ballroom dancing.

0:33:490:33:52

I used to do... NICK LAUGHS

0:33:520:33:54

What? You haven't! I have!

0:33:540:33:56

What, just like you had it for horse riding?

0:33:560:33:58

Just like you did for boxing? Just like you did for cake-making?

0:33:580:34:01

Billy, the Belle of the Ball, they called me.

0:34:010:34:03

You look into their eyes and guide them around the floor.

0:34:030:34:05

You're too short. You'd be looking into their chest.

0:34:050:34:08

Better, even better!

0:34:080:34:09

ALL LAUGH

0:34:090:34:11

Sorry, Your Grace. Sorry. Sorry, yeah...

0:34:110:34:13

Dave and Anna are getting back together with their ballroom friends

0:34:160:34:20

later this afternoon - I wondered whether you three...

0:34:200:34:22

I'm thinking Strictly, do you know what I mean?

0:34:220:34:25

It might be worth finding out whether you've still got it.

0:34:250:34:28

You don't lose it. Whether you might have it? I've never had it.

0:34:280:34:31

And whether, well...whether you've ever had it. Well, yeah.

0:34:310:34:34

I'm up for that.

0:34:340:34:35

Well, it certainly sounds like Billy knows his way

0:34:350:34:38

around a dance floor. We'll see.

0:34:380:34:39

With the whole house plastered,

0:34:400:34:42

we can now start to see how the new layout

0:34:420:34:45

is going to work for the family.

0:34:450:34:47

The kitchen-diner is looking the business now

0:34:480:34:50

and the tiling is coming along in the new wet room.

0:34:500:34:53

And just look at this!

0:34:530:34:54

Much to my amazement, Charlie's garden is really taking shape!

0:34:540:34:58

I'm a bit nervous, cos it seems to be going all right.

0:34:580:35:01

You're doing very well.

0:35:010:35:02

People said you couldn't pull it off, but I thought...

0:35:020:35:04

In fact, I said you couldn't pull it off, it wasn't "people".

0:35:040:35:07

I was led to believe he was a garden designer,

0:35:070:35:10

a professional garden designer, and he's not. I'm not.

0:35:100:35:13

I never said I was a garden designer,

0:35:130:35:16

I don't know where you got that from, I do buildings.

0:35:160:35:19

We thought we'd give him a go at garden designing -

0:35:190:35:21

what do you think? He's done a very good job.

0:35:210:35:24

There you go. Hey, there you go! Thank you.

0:35:240:35:26

I've put me card in for the next job

0:35:260:35:27

if you get any in Cheshire-Merseyside area.

0:35:270:35:30

You'd do it again? I would, I'd love to.

0:35:300:35:32

Why? Cos you know you're not making any money here.

0:35:320:35:34

No, I know I'm not making anything,

0:35:340:35:36

but it's nice to give something to the community

0:35:360:35:38

and it's nice to get involved.

0:35:380:35:40

I love it, I really do love it. It's great.

0:35:400:35:42

It never fails to amaze me, people's generosity.

0:35:420:35:45

And now, it's the big boys' chance

0:35:460:35:49

to see whether they've got what it takes

0:35:490:35:51

in the world of ballroom dance,

0:35:510:35:54

so I've sent them along to Anna and Dave's old dance class.

0:35:540:35:57

Well, who steers? You do. I do.

0:35:590:36:01

Julian, she's not a tractor!

0:36:010:36:03

Well, Jules has certainly got poise.

0:36:040:36:06

Ooh, with that sway, Chris would be better at sea, I think.

0:36:090:36:12

ALL LAUGH

0:36:120:36:14

Jules isn't the only one who should be wearing the steel toecaps.

0:36:140:36:18

APPLAUSE

0:36:180:36:19

Well, those two certainly ain't got it. We've got one last hope.

0:36:220:36:26

Let's see if the Belle of the Ball can live up to all the hype.

0:36:260:36:29

WALTZ PLAYS

0:36:290:36:34

Holy mackerel! He can actually dance!

0:36:340:36:37

Check out the moves.

0:36:370:36:39

That's a first! Billy can actually do something he says he can!

0:36:400:36:43

ALL APPLAUD

0:36:470:36:49

He's doing his own thing.

0:36:530:36:55

The man always leads!

0:36:550:36:56

MUSIC ENDS, CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:590:37:02

Strictly, we await your call!

0:37:080:37:11

It's the final day and it seems like

0:37:190:37:21

the whole of Warrington has turned up to help.

0:37:210:37:23

The problem is getting everything in and out of the house.

0:37:230:37:27

It's causing a nightmare for the lads laying the driveway.

0:37:270:37:30

You've got me worried, mate. Have I?

0:37:300:37:32

You have got me worried. You don't have to be worried.

0:37:320:37:35

No? You don't think I should be worried? It does you no good.

0:37:350:37:37

I know it does me no good, but 4 o'clock,

0:37:370:37:41

do you think we'll be out of here by then?

0:37:410:37:43

You told me 8 o'clock. I didn't tell you 8 o'clock!

0:37:430:37:45

You did! I didn't tell you 8 o'clock, I told you 4 o'clock!

0:37:450:37:48

I want you out by 4 o'clock, and that's it, OK?

0:37:480:37:52

What time are you going to be out at? OK, I'm dying!

0:37:520:37:55

There's no point in shouting. Maybe you've just got to tickle people.

0:37:570:38:00

Call that man management?

0:38:000:38:02

Despite the chaos, you can start to see the house coming together now

0:38:020:38:05

and it's a credit to the Warrington trades.

0:38:050:38:07

Up here is buzzing.

0:38:070:38:09

Do you remember when you here

0:38:090:38:10

and there was loads of plasterers up here in every room?

0:38:100:38:13

Well, it's exactly the same, but they're a bit cleaner.

0:38:130:38:15

There's painters everywhere.

0:38:150:38:17

Painters in here, we've got painters in here,

0:38:170:38:19

we've got plumbers down there, look!

0:38:190:38:22

There's another one.

0:38:220:38:24

You're not coming out until it's finished!

0:38:240:38:27

Over the last nine days,

0:38:300:38:31

no corner of this house has been left untouched,

0:38:310:38:34

as it's got to work not just for Dave,

0:38:340:38:36

but the girls and Anna, too.

0:38:360:38:38

Over the course of the week, I've started to realise

0:38:390:38:42

just how much Anna has taken on, caring for Dave,

0:38:420:38:46

and it's been worrying me,

0:38:460:38:48

cos I honestly think she'll burn out if she's not careful.

0:38:480:38:51

What would people not understand about how life changes?

0:38:520:38:58

They just don't. I didn't understand how much is involved

0:38:580:39:02

when somebody takes poorly, and how much it affects your life

0:39:020:39:05

and how much it...affects everybody's life,

0:39:050:39:08

and Dave's and the girls' and how much you have to do.

0:39:080:39:10

Everything's completely opposite to how it used to be,

0:39:100:39:13

I just try and keep things going.

0:39:130:39:16

I'm hoping that he'll get better,

0:39:160:39:18

you've just got to keep hoping, but it is very, very hard.

0:39:180:39:21

I just don't tell anybody. Nobody?

0:39:230:39:25

Well, now and then, when I'm upset, I speak to my friends,

0:39:250:39:29

but I don't let Dave know,

0:39:290:39:30

cos I don't want him to feel like he's a burden.

0:39:300:39:33

Because he's been struck with disability,

0:39:330:39:35

it doesn't mean that you have to close your life down as much as his

0:39:350:39:38

and you don't have to match his disability by creating your own.

0:39:380:39:42

And he obviously loves you a lot. No, I know...

0:39:420:39:45

And if he loves you a lot, then he wouldn't want that either.

0:39:450:39:48

Just sometimes feel guilty, that's all.

0:39:480:39:51

About what? Feel guilty about what? Cos you can go and he can't? Yeah.

0:39:510:39:55

What is it you miss the most?

0:39:580:40:00

SHE GULPS

0:40:030:40:05

SHE SIGHS

0:40:070:40:10

Just the normality.

0:40:100:40:12

You don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone, that's all.

0:40:160:40:19

That's the only way I can explain it. You just don't...

0:40:190:40:23

You just take things for granted - everyone does, I did, everyone does.

0:40:230:40:26

And then, when it's turned upside down, you're like, "Oh, my God!"

0:40:260:40:31

Mm...but we'll be fine.

0:40:340:40:37

You have to find some room for a life of your own, as well.

0:40:370:40:39

I know we can't turn the clock back for Anna,

0:40:440:40:47

but we can give her a home which will give Dave more independence.

0:40:470:40:50

In doing this, I'm hoping Anna can find a way of living her own life,

0:40:500:40:54

with the girls, without the feelings of guilt she's tormented with.

0:40:540:40:58

There's one last feature being fitted

0:41:000:41:01

which will make a massive difference.

0:41:010:41:03

We always make a big deal when these toilets go in,

0:41:060:41:08

because they are a big deal for the people involved.

0:41:080:41:10

And for Dave, in particular, his thing was having that dignity,

0:41:100:41:13

and Anna having to be a carer for him,

0:41:130:41:15

and it makes a big change in their relationship

0:41:150:41:17

that she's having to do all this kind of thing for him now.

0:41:170:41:20

Having the freedom to actually come in and use the loo himself -

0:41:200:41:24

this will wash him and dry him, as well -

0:41:240:41:27

is a huge deal. So, erm...

0:41:270:41:30

One thing this toilet is not is bog-standard -

0:41:300:41:33

it does everything.

0:41:330:41:36

It cleans and dries, and so on, and so forth,

0:41:360:41:38

so it's an amazing thing to go in.

0:41:380:41:40

We're sprinting to the finish now.

0:41:430:41:45

Everything's really starting to come together.

0:41:450:41:47

This wood-burning stove is going in

0:41:470:41:49

to make the living room nice and toasty

0:41:490:41:51

and Charlie's adding some finishing touches to Dave's man cave.

0:41:510:41:54

Earlier on in the week, you said to me you had a dream.

0:41:570:42:00

It was almost like that very famous speech by Martin Luther King.

0:42:000:42:04

His dream was to unite black and white,

0:42:040:42:06

yours was to open a supermarket at some stage. Yeah.

0:42:060:42:09

Well, we thought we might be able to get this dream to come true.

0:42:090:42:12

You wanted a big pair of scissors and a tape.

0:42:120:42:14

Gentlemen, would you like to step across?

0:42:140:42:16

So, what are we opening?

0:42:160:42:18

Your garden.

0:42:180:42:20

Now, all you need now is a big pair of scissors,

0:42:200:42:23

I just happen to have on me - big pair of scissors.

0:42:230:42:26

This means a lot, guys. I'm tearing up here.

0:42:260:42:28

Thank you, guys. You're welcome. Thank you, team.

0:42:280:42:31

We couldn't have done it without you. You've been amazing.

0:42:310:42:34

I now declare this garden...

0:42:340:42:36

SNIP! ..open!

0:42:360:42:38

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:380:42:40

Come in!

0:42:400:42:43

We arrived here in Warrington to find a family

0:42:580:43:00

trying to make the best of a tragic situation.

0:43:000:43:03

At just 47, Dave's massive stroke had left him living in one room

0:43:030:43:07

with devoted wife, Anna, becoming his full-time carer.

0:43:070:43:10

It isn't right for this once hard-working family

0:43:100:43:13

to live like this.

0:43:130:43:14

It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:43:140:43:17

just, like, at the click of your fingers,

0:43:170:43:20

someone can just suffer with that, sort of, massive impact

0:43:200:43:23

on their life and everything just changes in one go.

0:43:230:43:26

There's just no way we could ever have attempted

0:43:260:43:30

this amount of work alone

0:43:300:43:31

and it's only due to the monumental effort of the local trades

0:43:310:43:35

that we've done it.

0:43:350:43:36

In just over a week, we've turned this once dysfunctional house

0:43:400:43:43

into the home that will now work far better for the family.

0:43:430:43:47

With Dave trapped downstairs, we've pushed out to the rear

0:43:490:43:52

to give him the living space he so desperately needs.

0:43:520:43:56

The old dining room where Dave was forced to live,

0:43:560:43:58

has been opened up to create this beautiful kitchen-diner

0:43:580:44:02

which is now a space in which the whole family can get together.

0:44:020:44:06

The Shaker-style galley kitchen

0:44:060:44:08

combines simple, elegant lines with a lowered work surface

0:44:080:44:11

to make cooking as easy for possible for Dave to join in.

0:44:110:44:14

This custom-made shelving unit with built-in seating area

0:44:160:44:20

is now the room's magnificent centrepiece.

0:44:200:44:22

The new extension has allowed us

0:44:240:44:26

to create a master bedroom suite for Dave and Anna,

0:44:260:44:29

giving them a chance to sleep in the same bed together

0:44:290:44:32

for the first time since the stroke.

0:44:320:44:35

The bed is fully adjustable for Dave and we've put in these double doors

0:44:350:44:38

for Dave to look out over his garden.

0:44:380:44:41

Above all else, the aim of this build

0:44:410:44:43

was to solve the problem of Dave

0:44:430:44:44

having to wash and use a commode in the kitchen.

0:44:440:44:47

To do this, we've created a wet room with a disability access shower

0:44:470:44:51

and the specialist toilet, which now means

0:44:510:44:53

he doesn't need help from Anna to use the loo.

0:44:530:44:56

The old lounge has been transformed into a relaxing space

0:44:570:45:00

with a cool retro feel where the family can come and relax.

0:45:000:45:04

We've widened the doorway,

0:45:040:45:06

so Dave now has easy access from the kitchen.

0:45:060:45:09

The super-efficient wood burning stove and improved house insulation

0:45:090:45:12

will give the family added warmth through the winter months.

0:45:120:45:16

Emma's room has a classical, yet relaxed, feel,

0:45:180:45:20

which is very much in keeping with the period of the house,

0:45:200:45:24

whilst Amy's room is finished in soft green tones,

0:45:240:45:28

offset with simple, but timeless, bedroom furniture.

0:45:280:45:32

Charlie told me to say that.

0:45:320:45:34

And the third bedroom has been designed as a place for Anna

0:45:340:45:37

to come to relax when she needs a moment on her own.

0:45:370:45:40

The old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished

0:45:400:45:43

with these cool subway tiles.

0:45:430:45:45

Dave was cut off from his old garden

0:45:480:45:51

which has now been completely re-designed,

0:45:510:45:53

and I must say, Charlie's done a brilliant job.

0:45:530:45:57

The new space is totally wheelchair-friendly,

0:45:570:45:59

so he can move around independently.

0:45:590:46:02

We've put in this raised bed to grow veg,

0:46:020:46:04

and it's finished off with the stunning cedar-clad room

0:46:040:46:08

with greenhouse area for Dave to potter to his heart's content.

0:46:080:46:11

The real challenge of this build was to give the family

0:46:110:46:15

a home in which he has more independence,

0:46:150:46:17

which, in turn, will take the pressure off his wife -

0:46:170:46:21

somewhere which will allow Dave to face the future with dignity,

0:46:210:46:24

and give Anna the space she so desperately needs.

0:46:240:46:27

OK, so, if you're ready. Yeah.

0:46:300:46:32

One, two, three! Look up!

0:46:320:46:35

Oh, my God...

0:46:350:46:38

God...

0:46:380:46:40

It's unusual for us to show you the outside of a house first,

0:46:400:46:43

but the important thing is about access,

0:46:430:46:46

so we wanted to make sure that you could drive in,

0:46:460:46:48

that you could get out,

0:46:480:46:50

and as you can see, the ground very gently leads up to the front door.

0:46:500:46:54

It's a new front door which is wider than it was,

0:46:540:46:56

so you don't have the problems getting in and out.

0:46:560:46:58

It's just unbelievable, it's very nice. It's brilliant, yeah.

0:46:580:47:01

Shall we go and have a look? Oh, my God, it's just so easy.

0:47:010:47:04

God...

0:47:070:47:09

It really, really is beautiful. Oh, my God.

0:47:090:47:12

From the moment you come in through the front door and off the pathway,

0:47:120:47:15

everything is level throughout.

0:47:150:47:17

That first day, I was wrestling you around the corner.

0:47:170:47:19

I struggled getting him through the doors. I had to lift the wheelchair

0:47:190:47:23

and it hurt me back and that, but, yeah, it's a...

0:47:230:47:25

It's part of the reason you ended up in one room,

0:47:250:47:28

because you just couldn't move. I couldn't do it, yeah.

0:47:280:47:30

Oh, it's lovely. Thanks very much.

0:47:300:47:32

So, shall we go in and see the front room, first of all? Yeah.

0:47:320:47:35

Oh, God. Yeah. Here we go.

0:47:350:47:38

There we go. In you come.

0:47:430:47:45

I don't believe it!

0:47:450:47:47

Oh, it's just...my God! Dave!

0:47:470:47:49

You like it? Yeah, I love it, I love it!

0:47:510:47:53

It's just so different, it's unbelievable.

0:47:530:47:55

HE SIGHS

0:47:550:47:56

Brilliant. Dave, look! How did you know I wanted one of them?

0:47:580:48:02

You got your fire. I have. You didn't even know, did you?

0:48:020:48:07

That's beautiful, that, just in the right place and all.

0:48:070:48:09

Have we done all right with the room?

0:48:090:48:11

Oh, it's beautiful, thank you. Really is.

0:48:110:48:13

I couldn't ask for anything more, it's fantastic.

0:48:130:48:15

We've got another room to show you,

0:48:150:48:17

so we'll turn you around in here

0:48:170:48:19

and then get you out through that door.

0:48:190:48:21

DAVE LAUGHS

0:48:250:48:26

Oh, my God...

0:48:260:48:28

It's fantastic. Can't believe it.

0:48:310:48:34

Beautiful, ain't it? It is. It's lovely, it really is.

0:48:350:48:38

OK, let's move on down through your kitchen space here.

0:48:400:48:44

I just can't believe I can get you about so easy!

0:48:440:48:47

If you just push on a little bit further,

0:48:470:48:50

you can tuck underneath there.

0:48:500:48:52

Oh, yeah, you can do some cooking! Oh, yeah!

0:48:520:48:55

You'll be able to do chopping, get involved with the cooking.

0:48:550:48:58

Cos you like doing that, don't you?

0:48:580:49:00

You can prep stuff and have somebody else chef,

0:49:000:49:02

so you're involved with it.

0:49:020:49:03

You've got two doors in front of you

0:49:040:49:06

and the door to your right is where I think we should go next.

0:49:060:49:09

What do you reckon is through there? Um, bedroom.

0:49:090:49:12

Yeah. Ready to see this? Yeah. Right, let's go.

0:49:160:49:19

Gosh. Is this my bedroom?

0:49:270:49:30

I don't believe it!

0:49:300:49:33

Oh, it's beautiful.

0:49:330:49:35

It really is.

0:49:350:49:36

It really is. You're not in the kitchen any more. No.

0:49:380:49:43

You're not in the kitchen no more.

0:49:430:49:44

It's really, really nice.

0:49:440:49:46

Thank you, it's beautiful. It just doesn't seem real. It just...

0:49:460:49:50

I knew you was good, but I didn't know you was this good.

0:49:500:49:54

I really didn't.

0:49:540:49:55

It's all the builders and suppliers around here that are this good.

0:49:550:49:59

There's enough room for you to get the chair around the side there,

0:49:590:50:02

this side of the bed is a hospital bed,

0:50:020:50:05

this side, a standard bed.

0:50:050:50:07

You want it to be effective,

0:50:070:50:09

it's got to work for you with a disability.

0:50:090:50:11

But you don't want it to look like a hospital bed

0:50:110:50:14

and you don't want it to look like a hospital room, or a disability room.

0:50:140:50:17

It doesn't look like that. There is nothing about this...

0:50:170:50:19

No, it doesn't look like it at all. It's beautiful.

0:50:190:50:21

I can't wait until my first night's sleep in there, you know?

0:50:210:50:25

I really can't. So, we need one more thing. What are we missing?

0:50:250:50:29

Bathroom. Yes.

0:50:290:50:32

Toilet. OK, let's go and have a look.

0:50:320:50:34

God...

0:50:420:50:43

Oh, you've got a toilet, Dave.

0:50:460:50:48

More than a toilet, if you don't mind me saying so.

0:50:480:50:51

This is the all-singing, all-dancing look-after-yourself toilet.

0:50:510:50:54

Once that you're on it, you can be left alone.

0:50:540:50:57

So I don't have to ask for my wife to come and...? Fantastic!

0:50:570:51:01

Honestly...

0:51:010:51:03

HE SNIFFLES

0:51:030:51:05

It's brilliant, that.

0:51:050:51:06

That is fantastic.

0:51:080:51:09

As a man, you don't want your wife to do any of that, you really don't.

0:51:120:51:17

It's just not right. So what you've done is fantastic.

0:51:170:51:21

This room seems to have hit you more than any of the others, really.

0:51:210:51:25

Yeah, because I was doing things that I shouldn't be doing,

0:51:250:51:30

if you know what I mean - I appreciate everything,

0:51:300:51:33

but this, this was hard...

0:51:330:51:35

I know it sounds really awful, but it was really hard.

0:51:350:51:38

To go from husband and wife to carer is the toughest thing...

0:51:380:51:43

And not get it back, that's the thing,

0:51:430:51:45

you can't pull it back.

0:51:450:51:47

I think, with what you've done here, you've pulled it back for us

0:51:470:51:50

to give us another chance.

0:51:500:51:52

Not "another chance", but just to live life a bit better now.

0:51:520:51:56

That's what I mean, if that makes sense? Yeah.

0:51:560:51:59

And I think that's what you've done, and I can't thank you enough.

0:51:590:52:02

Plainly, we've made access all areas downstairs really easy for you.

0:52:050:52:11

But we can't access you upstairs

0:52:110:52:13

and we've done a bit for the rooms upstairs for the girls as well.

0:52:130:52:15

So I want to show the girls but not on their own,

0:52:150:52:18

And we talked about getting Mum and daughters together.

0:52:180:52:21

So, I wondered if I borrowed Anna? Yeah, sure.

0:52:210:52:23

But I don't want to leave you downstairs. No, I'll be fine here.

0:52:230:52:26

I'm not leaving you on your own,

0:52:260:52:27

so we thought we'd get some company for you. In you come, lads.

0:52:270:52:30

I don't know if you know these two at all, but, um...

0:52:300:52:33

Absolutely fantastic. How you doing?

0:52:330:52:36

Can't thank you enough, Garry. Don't worry, mate.

0:52:390:52:41

HE SOBS

0:52:440:52:46

Shall we leave him with Garry and Ray? They can catch up,

0:52:490:52:51

and we'll go and get the girls and see what they think.

0:52:510:52:54

What do you think, mate? It's fantastic!

0:52:570:52:59

There's a bit of a change here,

0:53:060:53:08

cos we've changed the rooms around a little bit.

0:53:080:53:11

But also, I know you're going to need, occasionally,

0:53:110:53:14

to not be downstairs and have a space away, so what we've done

0:53:140:53:17

is we've made the room in front of you an extra room,

0:53:170:53:21

either as a guest room

0:53:210:53:22

or a room that you can stay in, sometimes, if you need to. OK.

0:53:220:53:25

So, we're going in through that door next.

0:53:250:53:27

Oh, that's really nice.

0:53:300:53:32

God...

0:53:320:53:33

It is relaxing in here, isn't it?

0:53:340:53:37

So, it's a little room, it was always going to be a little room,

0:53:370:53:40

but it's a...if you want an escape, room.

0:53:400:53:44

It's lovely, isn't it, Mum? Yeah.

0:53:440:53:47

I like the colours. Don't! You'll set me off, stop it!

0:53:480:53:52

Thank you. No, it's fine.

0:53:520:53:54

No, it's just, for understanding, really.

0:53:540:53:56

You know, cos it's very hard when you're not involved in it all,

0:53:590:54:03

and I try to put a brave face on all the time...

0:54:030:54:05

Well, we've talked about that.

0:54:050:54:07

We've talked about you feeling guilty when you go out and enjoy yourself,

0:54:070:54:11

and you've got to stop, because you should go out

0:54:110:54:13

and everybody thinks that.

0:54:130:54:14

The girls think that. It was a lot of what we were talking about?

0:54:140:54:18

We've told him how we try and tell you,

0:54:180:54:20

but you just don't listen, so maybe you'll listen to Nick.

0:54:200:54:23

ALL LAUGH

0:54:230:54:25

Oh, my God...

0:54:290:54:31

It's really lovely.

0:54:310:54:33

Sorry!

0:54:350:54:38

It's really, really lovely.

0:54:380:54:39

Oh, it's really nice! Beautiful, isn't it? Yeah.

0:54:470:54:50

Everyone's gone the extra mile

0:54:550:54:56

to make sure that every part of it is finished off beautifully.

0:54:560:54:59

A lot of that is due to the fact that there's guys that know your dad

0:54:590:55:02

and know what a great guy he is and wanted to do this for him,

0:55:020:55:05

and for the family, too.

0:55:050:55:06

And a lot of other people who know you as a family,

0:55:060:55:08

and you're well-loved as a family, it's a great community around here.

0:55:080:55:11

It's overwhelming, really. Yeah.

0:55:110:55:13

Come on, let's get you downstairs to your dad, then.

0:55:130:55:16

I don't believe it, it's fantastic.

0:55:220:55:26

Wow. I wasn't expecting this.

0:55:260:55:29

Oh, Dave, and your bedroom.

0:55:290:55:31

I know. Cos you've always said you wanted a view from your room.

0:55:310:55:34

It's fantastic.

0:55:340:55:36

Oh, you can grow your own things. Oh, yeah.

0:55:360:55:40

Oh, that's lovely.

0:55:400:55:41

Like a summer house, I think. Yeah.

0:55:410:55:44

It's kind of more than a summer house.

0:55:450:55:47

It's insulated, it has electricity in here, there's an area to work,

0:55:470:55:50

there's a TV, so you can be out here, if you want.

0:55:500:55:52

That's fantastic, that.

0:55:520:55:54

It's a potting shed on the end that you can grow things.

0:55:540:55:56

You've got some herbs at the moment.

0:55:560:55:58

This is fantastic - you should take it up.

0:56:000:56:03

Is that right? It's not me.

0:56:030:56:06

Let's go and meet some of the people who put the work in

0:56:060:56:08

and see if you can say a few words to them? I can, yes.

0:56:080:56:11

Come on, then, let's go.

0:56:110:56:13

APPLAUSE

0:56:170:56:19

Thank you.

0:56:190:56:20

Cracking job.

0:56:290:56:30

What I'd like to say is, it's...

0:56:330:56:35

With me stroke, it's been hard for me,

0:56:350:56:39

but I've got to say, what you've done for us in this house

0:56:390:56:43

over these nine days, is fantastic.

0:56:430:56:46

Each one of you, I want to shake you by the hand

0:56:460:56:49

cos you've done a fantastic job - I'm proud to know you as my workmen.

0:56:490:56:54

Any time you want to knock on the door

0:56:540:56:57

for a cup of tea, just knock on.

0:56:570:56:58

I think there's about 200 of them! LAUGHTER

0:56:580:57:01

Have you got enough mugs?

0:57:010:57:02

It's fantastic, and again,

0:57:020:57:04

I can't put it into words what you've done for us.

0:57:040:57:06

I'd also like to mention whilst I'm here to all the...

0:57:060:57:09

All the people who looked after me over the last 18 months,

0:57:090:57:13

cos I can tell you, if it wasn't for them, I might not be here now,

0:57:130:57:16

because it was that close.

0:57:160:57:18

And, um...

0:57:180:57:20

I really can't thank you enough.

0:57:200:57:22

But I say, to all you workers here,

0:57:220:57:26

you all deserve a ten.

0:57:260:57:28

And I mean that from the bottom of my heart, you all need ten.

0:57:280:57:31

APPLAUSE

0:57:310:57:33

Thank you.

0:57:410:57:42

Come and say hello.

0:57:490:57:50

CHATTER

0:57:550:57:57

When a family member comes down with an illness this serious,

0:58:040:58:08

it puts unimaginable pressure on the family unit.

0:58:080:58:12

And it seems unfair to me that those people who are trying

0:58:120:58:14

to battle their illness are also becoming isolated and imprisoned

0:58:140:58:18

in their own homes for want of better facilities.

0:58:180:58:20

As a nation, we should be able to do something about that

0:58:200:58:24

so that they can concentrate on getting well.

0:58:240:58:26

These people thought it was unfair for Dave and his family to have

0:58:260:58:29

to deal with all that, so they came and did something about it.

0:58:290:58:32

Maybe you know somebody who needs your help.

0:58:320:58:35

Thanks for doing the electrics.

0:58:400:58:43

ALL LAUGH

0:58:430:58:46

It's amazing, yeah.

0:58:460:58:48

..can get about downstairs.

0:58:480:58:49

I did the driveway for you. Did you?

0:59:000:59:02

You're welcome.

0:59:050:59:06

Did the 1966 World Cup

0:59:100:59:11

mark the birth of modern football?

0:59:110:59:14

Would we starve without bees?

0:59:140:59:16

Why do Buddhists meditate?

0:59:160:59:18

Is rocket science easier than you think?

0:59:180:59:21

Well, BBC iWonder is full of great questions
