It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
just...click of your fingers and everything just changes in one go. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
We're here to help a man struck down by a devastating stroke. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:18
It's very, very hard, yeah. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
You don't appreciate what you've got till it's gone. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
and then seeing my mum get upset and sometimes, it just gets to you | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
and...oh, I'm so sorry. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
It's hard, isn't it? It is hard. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Once again, we're going to need the whole community to come | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
together for a fellow tradesman. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
He's kind of one of us, you get to change life for him, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
his wife and the two girls, so are we all up for this? | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
THEY CHEER | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
We have all your favourite members of the team, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
and Charlie Luxton the environmental designer, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
but where are we going to find people to do this in just nine days? | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
Maybe we should shout, "Help!" | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
ALL: Help! | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Yes, this is DIY SOS: The Big Build! | 0:01:03 | 0:01:08
This 1930s three-bed semi in Warrington, Cheshire, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
is home to electrician Dave, his wife Anna | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and their two daughters, 22-year-old Emma and Amy, who's 19. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
They've lived here since the girls were born and both Dave | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
and Anna worked hard to make a loving family home. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
You look after your family, you're providing for them, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
you've got a home for them to stay - | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
you've got to try your hardest, you can't give up. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
A healthy, fit man with no history of illness, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
when Dave woke up one morning complaining of a headache, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Anna had no reason to suspect it was anything sinister. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Next minute, I got this phone call saying he'd just | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
collapsed at work, so it was a real shock. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
At just 47, Dave suffered a massive stroke and was rushed to hospital. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:12
To relieve the pressure on his brain, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Dave underwent emergency surgery, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
where doctors removed a third of his skull. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
Luckily, he woke up, and then it was a matter of whether we could | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
communicate with him, and the first thing he did was we made him | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
put his thumb up | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
and that was he did, he put his thumb up, yeah. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
But the road to recovery has been a long one. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
It's like being in a shell - you know what's happening, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
but you can't do anything about it. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
I mean, I've got some movement in my leg and I'm made up for that | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
and my arm, but with my thoughts and that, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
it's like...you can't seem to get out | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
what you want to say, it's very frustrating. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
just...like, at the click of your fingers, someone can just | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
suffer that, sort of, massive impact on their life | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
and everything just changes in one go. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
After five months in hospital, Dave is now back at home. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
For the past year, he's been confined | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
to the family's old dining room | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
where a hospital bed has been shoehorned in. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
It's here he eats, sleeps and washes, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
and is now a virtual prisoner in his own home. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
He can't even get around his garden, that was once his passion. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
The world Anna knew has now been completely shattered - | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
she's been forced to give up work as Dave needs round-the-clock care. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
Right, just put your feet on the floor. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
She's pretty much his carer 24/7, like, she's such a loving and caring | 0:03:42 | 0:03:47
person and the way she's dealt with everything that's gone on | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
and how she's looked after my dad, it's just unbelievable. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
I do think that there's not a lot of people | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
that could do as much as she does. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:57
She puts such a brave face on and I just think she's amazing. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
It's very, very hard, yeah. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
But it's not Dave's fault and I don't want him | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
ever to feel as though he's a burden, if you know what I mean, he's not. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:13
It's clear the family have rallied round to do the best | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
they can for Dave, but now the simplest of everyday tasks | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
have become a gruelling ordeal. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
The family's only bathroom is upstairs, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
so with Anna's help, Dave has to resort to using | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
a commode in the kitchen, which is far from ideal. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
I would say that would be the part for me, that, the toilet | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
because it's... | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
The word you use is the right word, dignity, it's... | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
To ask you...like... | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
..Anna to do that sort of thing don't come natural to me, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
I don't think it should happen, and I do feel...not ashamed | 0:04:49 | 0:04:55
but just to take that burden away from her would be fantastic. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
It's a tragic situation that has affected the whole family. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
Emma and Amy have seen their world turned upside down | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
and are doing everything they can to support their mum and dad. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
I don 't want to put myself before my dad | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
because my dad is very important to me, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
and, erm, sorry... | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
I just think that they deserve something back for a change | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
and I try my hardest to help them out with that. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
Sorry. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
If that means me putting my life on hold for a little while, I don't mind. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
For such a loving family struck down in a moment of tragedy, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
it's simply not right for them to face a future living like this. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
It's a situation we just couldn't ignore, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
which is why we're here to help. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
So what's the main overarching theme, then, | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
in what we try and do with the house? | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
Well, for me, it's for getting a bedroom for Dave and a bathroom | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
so we can have the kitchen back and we can eat as a family. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
We sit in there, and Mum sits in there with my dad, cos there's no space, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
cos obviously it's, like, the bed and then, like, a chair, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
so unless we're all sat around the bed... | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
It is a bit of a squeeze, so, it would be nice | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
just to have that extra space so we could spend time as a family | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
again and not have to be as separated. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
So, as a couple, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
what do you miss most that the house is stopping you doing? | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
Dave sleeps downstairs and I sleep upstairs. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
You miss cuddling up to him? Yeah, I miss cuddles, yeah. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
So we want to try and get that back together. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
SHE LAUGHS | 0:06:32 | 0:06:33
Yeah. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35 | |
Look at his face, "Yeah"! | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
HE LAUGHS | 0:06:36 | 0:06:37
All right, we'll do our best, again... | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
All right, smashing - let's get you under way, then, shall we? | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
Right, we've had a fantastic turn-out this morning, | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
there must be 40 builders here already, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
but make no mistake - even with all this manpower, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
the pressure is on to get the job done, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
because, as usual, we've only got nine days. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Here we go, so we thought we'd bring the family over to say hello. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
How you doing, mate? Not so bad. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
All right, how are you? | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Are you an electrician as well? | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
Yeah, yeah. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
So you're going to be pointing the finger at everything that we do. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
Just get me over there if you want my help. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
You've got a good one here with Ray, he's a good electrician. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
Lovely! Nice to know there's at least one on-site. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
THEY LAUGH | 0:07:18 | 0:07:19
Right, we'd better get you off or we can't start work. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
Lovely to see you all. Thanks very much. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
The lad you met there, Dave, was a sparkie, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
working as an electrician, so he's kind of one of us. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
You get to change life for him, his wife and the two girls, | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
so are we all up for this? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:39
THEY CHEER | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
Lovely, thank you ever so much, thank you, guys. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
It's a real squeeze just to get everyone in through the front door. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
A bit claustrophobic. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
We've got to make this small house bigger for the family | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
and this means extending out at the rear. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
To keep the build on-track, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:01
we've had to get these foundations in beforehand. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
Basically, Colin turned up and did all the groundwork for us. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
Ah, lovely, thank you very much. And the drainage. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
Got all this sorted for the timber frame. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:11
Very good of you to come in and do this for us, we've got | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
half a chance now, haven't we? Top man. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
We've only been here five minutes | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
and we've already knocked seven bells out of the place. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
At this stage, you can really start to see | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
the huge task we've set ourselves. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
It's going to be a massive challenge to get the house working better for the family, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
and that's down to our designer, Charlie Luxton. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
Handsome, isn't he? | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
Charlie's background is in architecture and it will | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
take all his expertise to get the house working better for Dave's | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
medical needs, whilst retaining the feel of a loving family home | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
for Anna and the girls. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:46
But that's why he's here - to get the balance right. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
So what's your plan? Basically, the issue is at the moment... | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
Well, up until now, Dave has been, as you know, having to live | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
in the sitting room and kitchen area, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
that's where he's spending all his time. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:58
And the truth is we haven't got the room to put a lift in | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
so he's got to stay down here, hasn't he? Yes. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
We've got to make this like a proper living area. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
The big issue is it's not a big house - | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
wheelchair access has been a real problem, | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
so we're having to knock a lot of stuff out just to get a wheelchair around. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
We're ripping out the old kitchen | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
and building a new timber frame extension to the rear | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
to create a kitchen-dining area that the whole family can use. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
This extension will also house the downstairs bedroom and wet room | 0:09:22 | 0:09:27
Dave so desperately needs. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
The whole ground floor is going to be levelled | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
and the doorways widened so Dave has access throughout. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:36
Upstairs, we're completely re-doing Emma and Amy's rooms | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
and the third bedroom is going to become a space where mum, Anna, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
can retreat to. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
Along with all this, we're renovating the family bathroom. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
At the front, we're building in a new, level driveway | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
so Dave will have access in and out of the house in his chair - crucial. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
That just leaves the rear. We're creating a fully accessible | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
space as Dave loves gardening and it's Charlie's aim to get him | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
back out there, which will help maximise his recovery. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
Because he's very much based at the house | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
and getting out is very difficult for him, | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
what we want to try and do is give him a destination within the home, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
so we're getting rid of this garage here | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
which has sort of seen better days. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
That's his man cave. Yeah, but we're replacing the man cave, you see. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
We're building him a new man cave down the back garden | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
that's properly insulated, double-glazed windows, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
so he can come down from the house, across this kind of yard, | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
which is going to be a Japanese-inspired yard, | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
to...man cave here with greenhouse, and then raised beds down one side. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:35
Then his Acer collection running down this side here, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
so he can really experience his plants. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
Nice. Chelsea next year? | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
I don't think so, unless someone invites me. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
Well, who knows? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:47
HE LAUGHS | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
Available for Chelsea and pantomime, I should imagine, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
still even at this late date. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
With Dave's old man cave off to the skip, | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
there's no turning back now, | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
but the rear of the house is almost as rickety as Dave's shed. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
This wooden lintel is nowhere near strong enough to hold | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
the weight of the new extension. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
We need to replace it with a steel one, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
and there's no room for error. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:11
And let's be honest, Mark can't measure for toffee. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
No, no, no, let somebody else measure it. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
No, Nick, I can do it. Let somebody else measure it. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
No, I can do it. Why are you called "Hundred Millar"? | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
Would you mind going and measuring this? | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
Because he's always 100 mil out. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
Don't touch that tape! Rip it off him. I can do it! | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
No, rip it off him. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
'Measure once, cut twice - that's Mark's motto. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
'Now, people say talking isn't crucial.' | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
Rotate that side in, that side out slightly and go out towards you. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
'See? Crucial - made it work.' | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
Went like clockwork that, poetry in motion. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
When it comes to smashing things up, | 0:11:50 | 0:11:51
there's no better man for the job than Jules. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
Just don't let him near your garden - | 0:11:54 | 0:11:55
not so much as green fingers as red mist. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
Rather than hand dig them all, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
why don't we just cut them all off at the bottom | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
and then rip all the roots out with the machine? | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
Did you ask Charlie? | 0:12:07 | 0:12:08
Too late now, ain't it? | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
Charlie, the front garden - sorry to interrupt. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
Can we rip all those shrubs out at the front? | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Can I come and have a look? Why? | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
Well, in case we save some. Let's go, let's go, let's go. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
You've got a real sensitive touch | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
with the living...with living things, haven't you, Jules? | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
Well, this is the best way to do it, prune them, and then, erm... | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
Regrowth, they'll regenerate...in the skip. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
I think calling that "pruning" | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
is incredibly loose use of the word "prune". | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
I think the word "massacre" might be... | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
No, "prune" as in "it will shrivel up". | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
It will shrivel up pretty small... And die. Yeah! | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
LAUGHTER | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
Hey, look! Dead! | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
In Jules's defence, we do need this area | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
for access to the front of the house. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:57
He's not just devastating wildlife. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
The shrubs in the front garden are not the only thing heading for the skip - | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
the plaster downstairs is as dead as Jules' veg patch. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
Chris will be busy, then. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
It's tired, right? It's given up. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
The sparkies have put the cables in, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
the plumbers have been, so they've cut little holes in, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
and normally, you can get away with patching it. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
But with this age of house, | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
you're better off taking it back to the beginning and starting again. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
And upstairs is no better - it's like a bag of old biscuits. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
I think all the plaster's gone in all the rooms. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
All the plaster's gone in all the rooms? | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
We weren't supposed to be doing upstairs that much. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
Says who? Well, that was the plan. Whose plan? THE plan. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
You'd think a programme like this would be planned months in advance | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
and that there'd be incredibly intelligent people | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
at the BBC doing it. This is it! | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
No, no! It's not even this good! It's Mark. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
Yeah, that's it! | 0:13:52 | 0:13:53
Let's pray for no more surprises, | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
and we've got someone who's turned up this week | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
to give us a hand with that. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
So, I've often thought it might be a good idea | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
to have somebody in touch with God on our jobs. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
I believe so, I've seen your work! | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
Nice to see a man of the cloth. Yeah, yeah, happy to help. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
It's just what I used to do in a previous life, so... | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
You were a builder first? | 0:14:16 | 0:14:17
Fitter-welder I started off as at a company in Stockport, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
which is where I come from. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
What do you make of this? Church is all about community, | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
and bringing the community together | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
and working with the people in the community. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
That's what we get on these sites - community coming together. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
It's fantastic to see a community coming together to support someone - | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
having heard about Dave's story, what he's gone through | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
and it relates to a friend of mine who had a stroke at 40, | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
it really resonates. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:40
It's nice that we can help his guy | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
and it's good to see the community get together. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
Yeah. Really good community. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:45
What will you be throwing you hand into doing? | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
I'll just labour and whatever you want me to do, I'll do it. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
I'm not bad at making tea. Really? Yeah, yeah. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
All right, well, that will put Billy out of the job | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
cos that's all he's allowed to do on-site these days. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
It's not just spiritual support we're relying on today. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
Thankfully, the new steel has arrived to replace the old wooden lintel | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
so we can start to put some much-needed strength | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
back into the rear of the house, | 0:15:08 | 0:15:09
and get the extension up and attached. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
Not too far out, are we? | 0:15:12 | 0:15:13
No, it's all right, that. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
It's gone in like a hand in a glove, | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
which is always a surprise when Mark's been the one measuring it. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
It's been a full-on first day - | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
just look at the expression on their faces. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
But also, look at what we've achieved already. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
It's late, but nonetheless, people are still working, | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
all the electricians working in there. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
An opening's been made at this end, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:37
the steel's gone in up here, loads of plumbing's gone in. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
Over this side, we've taken the chimney out, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
which has made loads of room, and if you follow me, | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
we have another opening, two more steels, | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
and out here, an extension already. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
Isn't it amazing what people can do | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
when they all get together and help each other? Lovely. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
What we've done today is nothing short of a miracle. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
I've heard it said, "He works in mysterious ways" - | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
Billy, that is. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
Has it been good working with a man of the cloth? | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
You've got to apologise every time you swear - not that I swear, | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
but some people swear, and they've had to keep apologising. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
I think he's takes it very well overall. Not a problem. It's OK. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
Let's face it, when He made the world in seven days, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
He must have sworn a few times when He was putting the world together? | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
He must have hit a few snags along the way? Got a few sizes wrong? | 0:16:22 | 0:16:27
"That pine tree I put on the side of that mountain is far too big. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
"I can't see over that roof window." | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
There's a lot of building in the Bible, isn't there? | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
Jesus was a carpenter. No, he weren't! Yeah, he was! | 0:16:35 | 0:16:39
He went around the country in his sandals and his robes. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
He was Joseph's apprentice. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
Yes. No! | 0:16:44 | 0:16:45
Yeah, he was! He was! | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
If you can get hold a Jesus cabinet, it's worth a fortune now, honestly! | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
LAUGHTER | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
Yeah, but not many around, though! | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
ALL LAUGH | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Morning, day two. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:04
There's certainly no going back now, | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
we've pretty much taken the whole house back to bricks and mortar. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
I haven't really had a look around upstairs, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
but we're cleaning all the various rooms up | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
and we weren't supposed to be touching them, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
but as you can see from this room in here, | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
plainly, there has been a lot more going on up here than we thought. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
As Chris said, it's kind of doubled the amount of plastering | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
that we were going to do. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:28
That's the nature of the job, though. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
We'll just have to get plasterers in, and more plaster | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
and more plasterboard and go for it. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
I'm usually a glass-half-full sort of bloke, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
but looking around, there's far more work than we thought. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
It's bad news and there's plenty more to go around this morning. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
We have an issue already. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
You know your garden room, | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
your insulated man cave that you were going to build? Yeah. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:53
Not happening. Why? | 0:17:53 | 0:17:54
Cos the guy that was going to build it has pulled out. Really? | 0:17:54 | 0:17:59
I'm not even winding you up. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:00
We've just had a message through that he's not turning up. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
He was going to come and build that and he's not going to do it now. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
You're not winding me up? That's what's happened. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
You're very suspicious of me! | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
But the truth of the matter is it is bad news for you | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
and bad news for the build, because it is an important part of the build | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
that he has that sort of man space to operate in. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
But at the moment, it's looking like it's not going to happen. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
It's a blow. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
We all know how vital these features are going to be for Dave. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
No-one more so than his best mate, Garry, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
who's helping us out this week with the electrics. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
The long and short of it is | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32
you've known Dave for a long time, haven't you? | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
I have. I've known him since '92. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
I first knew him working alongside him as an electrician. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
We got to become good friends, really decent lad. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
I was majorly shocked when I got the phone call | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
to say he'd dropped down in work, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
and the first thing I did was went over to Anna to Arrowe Park | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
to see her at the hospital | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
and the biggest shock, as you can imagine. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
How have they managed as a family, do you think? | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
I think that Anna's done marvellous, | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
the girls, being involved the way they are and everything else. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
I'm just glad that he's going to get what he deserves. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
For you, as his mate, to see all these people turn up | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
and get stuck into the house. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
It is dramatically going to turn his life around, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
so I can't wait to see his face. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
Aw... I can't wait to see his face. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
You know, the fact that Dave was an electrician has really hit home | 0:19:21 | 0:19:25
for everybody on-site and they're all there to give a fellow tradesman | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
the helping hand he desperately needs - | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
which is lucky, as Dave's all-important man cave | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
in the garden fell through earlier. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
Maybe the team who put up our timber frame could step in | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
and do us one last favour. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
PHONE RINGS | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
John, we've got a problem, I hope you might be able to help us. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
We were having a garden room built at the back of the house, | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
and the gentlemen who was doing it | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
has to pull out off the job because his wife's taken really ill. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
And we're wondering if there was any chance | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
you could make a frame up for it? | 0:19:54 | 0:19:55
Basically, could you make us another tiny timber-frame house for the back garden? | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
You are a gentleman. Thank you very much indeed. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
Briefly, what we're talking about - 8-9 metres... | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
It's been cut... What's happened, Charlie? | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
It was somebody else with a similar name! | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
Oh, John! | 0:20:11 | 0:20:12
LAUGHTER | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
It's all on. It's all all right, don't worry, mate. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
The guy's back on. It was someone with the same name | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
that pulled out of the job. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
Flipping 'eck. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:23
You know, with so many trades turning up on these jobs, | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
I'm amazed things like that don't happen more often. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
But it is a relief as the man cave | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
is going to give Dave a chance to claw back | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
some of the independence he's lost. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
For a man as active as Dave, who was so passionate about gardening, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
and loved to go out dancing with Anna, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
it must be all the harder to come to terms with his situation. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
I'm not sure how you begin to get your head around it, | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
but I do know he takes great solace with his weekly meetings | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
at a local support group who have helped him to try and find a way | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
of dealing with life since the stroke. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
Being that man who provided and looked after the family, | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
it must be that much harder then to come to terms | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
with the situation you're in now? | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
I've come to terms with the stroke. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
I'm just glad I had the chance to have some life, | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
if you know what I mean, because last year, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
there was a possibility I might not be here, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
and if you've got that situation there | 0:21:21 | 0:21:25
where you're going to completely miss everything, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
to what you are now, with maybe a few disabilities, | 0:21:28 | 0:21:33
I'd take that every time. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
I've got to think to myself, "I've had a stroke." | 0:21:35 | 0:21:40
It is...how can I say? | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
It's a massive thing in my life, | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
but I've got to push on. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
I know you're a man who takes a great deal of pride | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
in his independence. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
How tough is it that Anna has had to become your carer? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
I think she's been brilliant. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
I feel, sometimes, I wish I could do more for her | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
because she deserves it, she works so hard, and, um... | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
Hell of a girl you've got there. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:06
I have. I've got the best, and that's the truth, that. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
I've got the best. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
I mean, next year, 25 years' marriage. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
Who could ask for more? | 0:22:14 | 0:22:15
For a fantastic woman, | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
you know, a good friend, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
good family friend to the kids, | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
always done provide for them and all that, | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
you can't ask for more. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
I know you know some of your mates are working on the site | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
but it's full of people who don't know the family. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
What are you hoping to see when you come back? | 0:22:30 | 0:22:32
Do you know, not meaning anything, don't take this the wrong way, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
I'm not bothered about seeing anything, really. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
It's...as long as things are all right for Anna, | 0:22:39 | 0:22:43
they'll be fine for me. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
Cos at the end of the day, I know you're saying it's all about me, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
but it's all about me wife, and if that can help her | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
to keep us going, and our relationship, | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
that would be great, that would be fantastic. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
I know Dave struggles with the fact | 0:23:01 | 0:23:02
Anna has had to become his full-time carer. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
Through it all, I think this is the hardest thing he's had to accept. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
That's why we're working into the night - | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
to give Dave, Anna and the girls | 0:23:13 | 0:23:14
a house that is going to work far better for them | 0:23:14 | 0:23:17
in all the hard years ahead. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
What a perfect end to the day. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
Floor going in, plasterers all gathered in the front room | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
discussing what point of action they're going to do tomorrow. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
Over ten tonnes of concrete is going into the new kitchen and bedroom | 0:23:29 | 0:23:33
to create a level floor area throughout the downstairs. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
You know, every aspect of the build is designed to relieve | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
some of the pressures the whole family are under every day, | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
a situation Dave's friend | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
and fellow electrician, Ray, knows only too well. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
What do you think he'll make of this? | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
He'll be made up, cos he can get access | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
to all the parts of his house now, | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
into the garden and into this room, as well. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
99% of the people that's on this build | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
don't know David, Anna and the girls. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
It will hopefully get them back up and running, quick as possible. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
When he knows that people from out of town who don't know him | 0:24:09 | 0:24:13
have spent two weeks on the build helping out, | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
he will get a bit emotional, I think. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
Inspiring, isn't it? | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
That's it. It's in the bag, isn't it? | 0:24:26 | 0:24:27
Floor's in and levelled out. Isn't it mad? | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
Tomorrow, we're boarding and skimming all this area, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
and then, the following day, | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
there'll be a kitchen exactly where I'm standing. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
Proper job. Proper job. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
We're at the halfway point now, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
the whole house is being boarded from top to bottom | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
so we can start to get some plaster on the walls. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
And in the garden, the team have started on Dave's awesome man cave. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
Now, Charlie tells me he's never designed a garden before, | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
and although it doesn't look much yet, | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
if Charlie pulls this off, it really could propel his career | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
to the stratospheric heights of Titchmarsh and Beardshaw. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
Dare to dream, Charlie! Dare to dream. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:11
Do you know what I want in life? | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
I want a giant pair of scissors and I want to open a supermarket. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
Do you really? Yeah, have you ever opened a supermarket? | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
No-one's ever asked me. I'd quite like to open a... | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
Not sure there's so much supermarket opening going on, these days. Seems a shame, though. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
Let's see if we can find a pair of giant scissors and a ribbon to cut, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
you could open this garden before we show it off. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
I'd love to - anything with a giant scissors and ribbons, | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
I'd be happy. Made up. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:33
BOTH LAUGH | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
Anything to make you happy, Charlie. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
Outside, Billy's involved in a meeting of minds. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:42
CHILD: Thank you for your help, Billy. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
Oh, thank you very much. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
Oh, were these made at the weekend? Yes. Ta, princess. Thank you, kids. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
Right, guys, what have we got to say to all of the builders? | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
Why have you come down? Thank you. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:58
Thank you very much. Pardon? Thank you! | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
Sorry? THANK YOU! | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
Oh, thank you! Who's got a skateboard? Not me. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:10
I got on my grandson's a skateboard the other day, | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
and I come down the path, | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
and I hit some steps and I fell into a load of rubble. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
When I went to the doctor's, | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
I told him it hurt when I touch there, it hurt when I touch there, | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
and it hurt when I touch there. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
Do you know what he said? | 0:26:26 | 0:26:27
I broke me finger. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:28
LAUGHTER | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
Tough crowd, Billy. Tough crowd. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:33
Inside, Chris has got some crowd control issues of his own. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
You know where all the kit is? Where all the gear is? Yeah. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
Excellent Nice one, cheers. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:41
There's eight plasterers upstairs. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
Chris and his team are getting some plaster on the walls | 0:26:44 | 0:26:46
to transform this building site into a home, which is good to see. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
We've got to hit these key stages to keep the build on target, | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
otherwise, everything simply unravels. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
Working under such tight timescale | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
is certainly not good for our blood pressure. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
Jane from the Stroke Association is here to give us the once over. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
You've got the best blood pressure out of all of them. Yes! | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
Isn't that just cos he is low? No, it's nothing to do with that. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
He's smaller so he wouldn't have as much pressure, would he? | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
You've come to do some blood pressure tests on us | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
to make sure that we're all healthy, | 0:27:17 | 0:27:19
but it was you that wrote in to get us to come to do this. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:21
When David got discharged after having a devastating stroke, | 0:27:21 | 0:27:25
I came to do home visits to his house. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:27
David was sleeping in a hospital bed | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
with a hoist there, with a commode there, you know. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
If Anna was doing cooking and he needed to use the commode... | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
It's just his dignity, it's his self-esteem. It was everything. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:40
I've been working for the Stroke Association for ten years, | 0:27:40 | 0:27:43
and I've noticed people are getting younger and younger, | 0:27:43 | 0:27:46
and it's happening younger and younger and devastating. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
Because, as I say, with David, he had a great life. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
He was working, Anna was working, | 0:27:52 | 0:27:53
had a lovely life with their two daughters - | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
danced, he was an excellent dancer. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:57
Then, all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, it's all changed. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
What's becoming clear is just how much disability | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
affects the whole family. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
Anna has taken on so much to become Dave's full-time carer | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
and I know how much Emma and Amy worry about their mum, too. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
Talking to your mum, probably the most difficult thing | 0:28:18 | 0:28:21
was going from wife and mum to a carer for your dad. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
I think it is hard for her to deal with sometimes, like, | 0:28:25 | 0:28:29
cos you've got to think - every morning, | 0:28:29 | 0:28:31
she's up early and she goes downstairs and she sees to my dad | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
and she with trying to move me dad about and stuff. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:37
It affects her health and she gets tired out and things like that. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:40
She's still taking care of me and Amy | 0:28:40 | 0:28:42
cos she doesn't want us to feel like anything's different... | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
Like she's not there for us any more. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:47
We're always saying to her, "We'll stay in with Dad", | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
cos we're the only other help there that can let her go out | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
and have some time with her friends. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:54
She doesn't do that very often, does she? No. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:57
She doesn't like putting on us, but we don't mind, | 0:28:57 | 0:28:59
but she says, "Oh, no! You're only young". | 0:28:59 | 0:29:01
She's just being a mum, isn't she? | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
Your mum tries very hard to protect you. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:07
She tries not to show us, | 0:29:07 | 0:29:08
but she does have her down days, doesn't she? | 0:29:08 | 0:29:11
She doesn't know who else to speak to, sometimes, | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14
but we don't mind that, because we're here for her. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:16
Is that the hardest thing, seeing your mum cry? Yeah. | 0:29:16 | 0:29:20
Sorry... | 0:29:20 | 0:29:21
It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless, | 0:29:25 | 0:29:29
and then seeing my mum get upset. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:31
Sometimes, it just gets to you and.. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
Oh, I'm so sorry. It's all right, | 0:29:35 | 0:29:37
There's nothing to be sorry about. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:43
It's a tough thing, it's a lot for you to take on | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
at the ages that you are, to deal with these things, | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
and at the same time, | 0:29:48 | 0:29:49
I know that your mum's trying so hard to protect you. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:53
She's incredibly strong, isn't she? She is amazing, to be honest. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
I don't know how she does it. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
The trouble is, if she doesn't get some time off, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
it's going to wear her out, isn't it? It would be nice | 0:30:00 | 0:30:02
if you and your mum could get a day out or something. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:06
And that's the thing I miss most, spending time with Mum. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:14
BOTH SOB | 0:30:14 | 0:30:16
Obviously, I'm glad to be healthy and well, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
but we're really close - | 0:30:20 | 0:30:21
close to Dad, but really, really close to Mum | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
and it's just changed, you know what I mean? | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
It's hard, isn't it? It is hard. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
If we can get the house sorted out | 0:30:33 | 0:30:34
and it's a good space for him to move around | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
and somebody can come and sit with him, | 0:30:36 | 0:30:39
I think she might be able to do that, you know? | 0:30:39 | 0:30:41
If I have one hope, it's for every element of this build | 0:30:45 | 0:30:48
to enable Dave to do more for himself, | 0:30:48 | 0:30:50
to take away some of the enormous pressure | 0:30:50 | 0:30:53
Anna clearly puts herself under. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:55
I'm starting to see just how vital | 0:30:55 | 0:30:57
features like the new garden room will become. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:01
Very lovely, it's like a proper man cave, ain't it? Yeah, yeah. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:04
So, are we fully insulated? Yeah, this part is fully insulated | 0:31:04 | 0:31:08
and you've got a double-glazed door leading into that bit there, | 0:31:08 | 0:31:11
which is going to be a greenhouse, going to put shelving in for him. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:15
We've got French doors coming tomorrow and we'll ramp it up, | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
low threshold, so he'll be able to get in and out, no problem. Lovely. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:22
The sheer amount of detail going into every aspect of the build | 0:31:24 | 0:31:27
is a real credit to the Warrington trades - | 0:31:27 | 0:31:30
every one of them intent on giving one of their own, and his family, | 0:31:30 | 0:31:34
a chance for a better future. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
So, why did you decide to come and join in and help out? | 0:31:37 | 0:31:40
Me? Yeah. Um, well... | 0:31:40 | 0:31:42
I've always wanted to do something. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
My son, he passed away, like, five years ago... | 0:31:45 | 0:31:50
Oh, I'm sorry. Cancer and that, yeah. | 0:31:50 | 0:31:52
And when I come in here and I seen the wheelchair and the hospital bed, | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
it really, you know, brought home. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
Cos my son became paralysed a few months before he passed away, | 0:31:57 | 0:32:01
and we had him at home in a hospital bed, you know? | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
And we were waiting for an extension to be done, | 0:32:04 | 0:32:07
but, sadly, you know, the plans got passed after he passed away. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:11
So, when I came here to meet everybody a few weeks ago, | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
that's what made me want to give something back, you know? | 0:32:15 | 0:32:17
And how are you finding it? Are you finding being involved with this | 0:32:17 | 0:32:21
and joining in is like giving you something back? | 0:32:21 | 0:32:23
Course it is, yeah. Very much so. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:25
Cos lots of people, lots of family and friends helped me and my family | 0:32:25 | 0:32:29
when we were in need of help, so... | 0:32:29 | 0:32:31
I'd like to do something for somebody else that's in need, you know? | 0:32:31 | 0:32:34
Fantastic, thank you very much, mate. Appreciate you coming on. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:37
Everyone on this build has their reasons for helping, | 0:32:39 | 0:32:41
but hearing Mick's story is truly humbling. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:44
Morning. Just a couple of days to go now | 0:32:54 | 0:32:56
and the deliveries keep on coming in. | 0:32:56 | 0:32:58
These bricks have just turned up, | 0:32:58 | 0:33:00
so we can start to lay the front driveway. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:03
They assure me they can do it in record time, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:05
but it's not the only record we're breaking today. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:07
Never has a room been skimmed so fast! | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
These guys rocked up two days ago, | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
they've plastered the house top to bottom. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:14
They're stood around. "Is there anything else we can do?" | 0:33:14 | 0:33:17
I said, "Yeah, there's a shed to do." | 0:33:17 | 0:33:19
And they wouldn't split up, | 0:33:19 | 0:33:20
so I said, "We'll all have it, then", | 0:33:20 | 0:33:22
Look, they've got that on in about three minutes. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:25
I truly have never seen Chris so proud! | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
The plasterers of Warrington have played a blinder this week, | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
and we've had so many in, | 0:33:34 | 0:33:35
they've been almost tripping over each other. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:37
And talking of treading on toes... | 0:33:37 | 0:33:39
Dave and Anna were keen ballroom dancers. | 0:33:39 | 0:33:42
You ever done any dancing? Terrible. I'm a really bad dancer. | 0:33:42 | 0:33:45
But you're quite light on your feet for a big fella. I am, | 0:33:45 | 0:33:48
but I haven't got no rhythm. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:49
I've got medals for ballroom dancing. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
I used to do... NICK LAUGHS | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
What? You haven't! I have! | 0:33:54 | 0:33:56
What, just like you had it for horse riding? | 0:33:56 | 0:33:58
Just like you did for boxing? Just like you did for cake-making? | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
Billy, the Belle of the Ball, they called me. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03
You look into their eyes and guide them around the floor. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:05
You're too short. You'd be looking into their chest. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:08
Better, even better! | 0:34:08 | 0:34:09
ALL LAUGH | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
Sorry, Your Grace. Sorry. Sorry, yeah... | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
Dave and Anna are getting back together with their ballroom friends | 0:34:16 | 0:34:20
later this afternoon - I wondered whether you three... | 0:34:20 | 0:34:22
I'm thinking Strictly, do you know what I mean? | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
It might be worth finding out whether you've still got it. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:28
You don't lose it. Whether you might have it? I've never had it. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:31
And whether, well...whether you've ever had it. Well, yeah. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:34
I'm up for that. | 0:34:34 | 0:34:35
Well, it certainly sounds like Billy knows his way | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
around a dance floor. We'll see. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:39
With the whole house plastered, | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
we can now start to see how the new layout | 0:34:42 | 0:34:45
is going to work for the family. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
The kitchen-diner is looking the business now | 0:34:48 | 0:34:50
and the tiling is coming along in the new wet room. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
And just look at this! | 0:34:53 | 0:34:54
Much to my amazement, Charlie's garden is really taking shape! | 0:34:54 | 0:34:58
I'm a bit nervous, cos it seems to be going all right. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:01
You're doing very well. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:02
People said you couldn't pull it off, but I thought... | 0:35:02 | 0:35:04
In fact, I said you couldn't pull it off, it wasn't "people". | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
I was led to believe he was a garden designer, | 0:35:07 | 0:35:10
a professional garden designer, and he's not. I'm not. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
I never said I was a garden designer, | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
I don't know where you got that from, I do buildings. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
We thought we'd give him a go at garden designing - | 0:35:19 | 0:35:21
what do you think? He's done a very good job. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
There you go. Hey, there you go! Thank you. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:26
I've put me card in for the next job | 0:35:26 | 0:35:27
if you get any in Cheshire-Merseyside area. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:30
You'd do it again? I would, I'd love to. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:32
Why? Cos you know you're not making any money here. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:34
No, I know I'm not making anything, | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
but it's nice to give something to the community | 0:35:36 | 0:35:38
and it's nice to get involved. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:40
I love it, I really do love it. It's great. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:42
It never fails to amaze me, people's generosity. | 0:35:42 | 0:35:45
And now, it's the big boys' chance | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
to see whether they've got what it takes | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
in the world of ballroom dance, | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
so I've sent them along to Anna and Dave's old dance class. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
Well, who steers? You do. I do. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:01
Julian, she's not a tractor! | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
Well, Jules has certainly got poise. | 0:36:04 | 0:36:06
Ooh, with that sway, Chris would be better at sea, I think. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:12
ALL LAUGH | 0:36:12 | 0:36:14
Jules isn't the only one who should be wearing the steel toecaps. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:18
APPLAUSE | 0:36:18 | 0:36:19
Well, those two certainly ain't got it. We've got one last hope. | 0:36:22 | 0:36:26
Let's see if the Belle of the Ball can live up to all the hype. | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
WALTZ PLAYS | 0:36:29 | 0:36:34
Holy mackerel! He can actually dance! | 0:36:34 | 0:36:37
Check out the moves. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
That's a first! Billy can actually do something he says he can! | 0:36:40 | 0:36:43
ALL APPLAUD | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
He's doing his own thing. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
The man always leads! | 0:36:55 | 0:36:56
MUSIC ENDS, CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
Strictly, we await your call! | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
It's the final day and it seems like | 0:37:19 | 0:37:21
the whole of Warrington has turned up to help. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
The problem is getting everything in and out of the house. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:27
It's causing a nightmare for the lads laying the driveway. | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
You've got me worried, mate. Have I? | 0:37:30 | 0:37:32
You have got me worried. You don't have to be worried. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:35
No? You don't think I should be worried? It does you no good. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:37
I know it does me no good, but 4 o'clock, | 0:37:37 | 0:37:41
do you think we'll be out of here by then? | 0:37:41 | 0:37:43
You told me 8 o'clock. I didn't tell you 8 o'clock! | 0:37:43 | 0:37:45
You did! I didn't tell you 8 o'clock, I told you 4 o'clock! | 0:37:45 | 0:37:48
I want you out by 4 o'clock, and that's it, OK? | 0:37:48 | 0:37:52
What time are you going to be out at? OK, I'm dying! | 0:37:52 | 0:37:55
There's no point in shouting. Maybe you've just got to tickle people. | 0:37:57 | 0:38:00
Call that man management? | 0:38:00 | 0:38:02
Despite the chaos, you can start to see the house coming together now | 0:38:02 | 0:38:05
and it's a credit to the Warrington trades. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:07
Up here is buzzing. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:09
Do you remember when you here | 0:38:09 | 0:38:10
and there was loads of plasterers up here in every room? | 0:38:10 | 0:38:13
Well, it's exactly the same, but they're a bit cleaner. | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
There's painters everywhere. | 0:38:15 | 0:38:17
Painters in here, we've got painters in here, | 0:38:17 | 0:38:19
we've got plumbers down there, look! | 0:38:19 | 0:38:22
There's another one. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
You're not coming out until it's finished! | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
Over the last nine days, | 0:38:30 | 0:38:31
no corner of this house has been left untouched, | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
as it's got to work not just for Dave, | 0:38:34 | 0:38:36
but the girls and Anna, too. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:38
Over the course of the week, I've started to realise | 0:38:39 | 0:38:42
just how much Anna has taken on, caring for Dave, | 0:38:42 | 0:38:46
and it's been worrying me, | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
cos I honestly think she'll burn out if she's not careful. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
What would people not understand about how life changes? | 0:38:52 | 0:38:58
They just don't. I didn't understand how much is involved | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
when somebody takes poorly, and how much it affects your life | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
and how much it...affects everybody's life, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
and Dave's and the girls' and how much you have to do. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:10
Everything's completely opposite to how it used to be, | 0:39:10 | 0:39:13
I just try and keep things going. | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
I'm hoping that he'll get better, | 0:39:16 | 0:39:18
you've just got to keep hoping, but it is very, very hard. | 0:39:18 | 0:39:21
I just don't tell anybody. Nobody? | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
Well, now and then, when I'm upset, I speak to my friends, | 0:39:25 | 0:39:29
but I don't let Dave know, | 0:39:29 | 0:39:30
cos I don't want him to feel like he's a burden. | 0:39:30 | 0:39:33
Because he's been struck with disability, | 0:39:33 | 0:39:35
it doesn't mean that you have to close your life down as much as his | 0:39:35 | 0:39:38
and you don't have to match his disability by creating your own. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:42
And he obviously loves you a lot. No, I know... | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
And if he loves you a lot, then he wouldn't want that either. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:48
Just sometimes feel guilty, that's all. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
About what? Feel guilty about what? Cos you can go and he can't? Yeah. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:55
What is it you miss the most? | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
SHE GULPS | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
SHE SIGHS | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
Just the normality. | 0:40:10 | 0:40:12
You don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone, that's all. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:19
That's the only way I can explain it. You just don't... | 0:40:19 | 0:40:23
You just take things for granted - everyone does, I did, everyone does. | 0:40:23 | 0:40:26
And then, when it's turned upside down, you're like, "Oh, my God!" | 0:40:26 | 0:40:31
Mm...but we'll be fine. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:37
You have to find some room for a life of your own, as well. | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
I know we can't turn the clock back for Anna, | 0:40:44 | 0:40:47
but we can give her a home which will give Dave more independence. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
In doing this, I'm hoping Anna can find a way of living her own life, | 0:40:50 | 0:40:54
with the girls, without the feelings of guilt she's tormented with. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:58
There's one last feature being fitted | 0:41:00 | 0:41:01
which will make a massive difference. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
We always make a big deal when these toilets go in, | 0:41:06 | 0:41:08
because they are a big deal for the people involved. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:10
And for Dave, in particular, his thing was having that dignity, | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
and Anna having to be a carer for him, | 0:41:13 | 0:41:15
and it makes a big change in their relationship | 0:41:15 | 0:41:17
that she's having to do all this kind of thing for him now. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:20
Having the freedom to actually come in and use the loo himself - | 0:41:20 | 0:41:24
this will wash him and dry him, as well - | 0:41:24 | 0:41:27
is a huge deal. So, erm... | 0:41:27 | 0:41:30
One thing this toilet is not is bog-standard - | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
it does everything. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:36
It cleans and dries, and so on, and so forth, | 0:41:36 | 0:41:38
so it's an amazing thing to go in. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:40
We're sprinting to the finish now. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:45
Everything's really starting to come together. | 0:41:45 | 0:41:47
This wood-burning stove is going in | 0:41:47 | 0:41:49
to make the living room nice and toasty | 0:41:49 | 0:41:51
and Charlie's adding some finishing touches to Dave's man cave. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
Earlier on in the week, you said to me you had a dream. | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
It was almost like that very famous speech by Martin Luther King. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:04
His dream was to unite black and white, | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
yours was to open a supermarket at some stage. Yeah. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:09
Well, we thought we might be able to get this dream to come true. | 0:42:09 | 0:42:12
You wanted a big pair of scissors and a tape. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
Gentlemen, would you like to step across? | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
So, what are we opening? | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
Your garden. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
Now, all you need now is a big pair of scissors, | 0:42:20 | 0:42:23
I just happen to have on me - big pair of scissors. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
This means a lot, guys. I'm tearing up here. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
Thank you, guys. You're welcome. Thank you, team. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:31
We couldn't have done it without you. You've been amazing. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
I now declare this garden... | 0:42:34 | 0:42:36
SNIP! ..open! | 0:42:36 | 0:42:38
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:42:38 | 0:42:40
Come in! | 0:42:40 | 0:42:43
We arrived here in Warrington to find a family | 0:42:58 | 0:43:00
trying to make the best of a tragic situation. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
At just 47, Dave's massive stroke had left him living in one room | 0:43:03 | 0:43:07
with devoted wife, Anna, becoming his full-time carer. | 0:43:07 | 0:43:10
It isn't right for this once hard-working family | 0:43:10 | 0:43:13
to live like this. | 0:43:13 | 0:43:14
It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone, | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
just, like, at the click of your fingers, | 0:43:17 | 0:43:20
someone can just suffer with that, sort of, massive impact | 0:43:20 | 0:43:23
on their life and everything just changes in one go. | 0:43:23 | 0:43:26
There's just no way we could ever have attempted | 0:43:26 | 0:43:30
this amount of work alone | 0:43:30 | 0:43:31
and it's only due to the monumental effort of the local trades | 0:43:31 | 0:43:35
that we've done it. | 0:43:35 | 0:43:36
In just over a week, we've turned this once dysfunctional house | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
into the home that will now work far better for the family. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:47
With Dave trapped downstairs, we've pushed out to the rear | 0:43:49 | 0:43:52
to give him the living space he so desperately needs. | 0:43:52 | 0:43:56
The old dining room where Dave was forced to live, | 0:43:56 | 0:43:58
has been opened up to create this beautiful kitchen-diner | 0:43:58 | 0:44:02
which is now a space in which the whole family can get together. | 0:44:02 | 0:44:06
The Shaker-style galley kitchen | 0:44:06 | 0:44:08
combines simple, elegant lines with a lowered work surface | 0:44:08 | 0:44:11
to make cooking as easy for possible for Dave to join in. | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
This custom-made shelving unit with built-in seating area | 0:44:16 | 0:44:20
is now the room's magnificent centrepiece. | 0:44:20 | 0:44:22
The new extension has allowed us | 0:44:24 | 0:44:26
to create a master bedroom suite for Dave and Anna, | 0:44:26 | 0:44:29
giving them a chance to sleep in the same bed together | 0:44:29 | 0:44:32
for the first time since the stroke. | 0:44:32 | 0:44:35
The bed is fully adjustable for Dave and we've put in these double doors | 0:44:35 | 0:44:38
for Dave to look out over his garden. | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
Above all else, the aim of this build | 0:44:41 | 0:44:43
was to solve the problem of Dave | 0:44:43 | 0:44:44
having to wash and use a commode in the kitchen. | 0:44:44 | 0:44:47
To do this, we've created a wet room with a disability access shower | 0:44:47 | 0:44:51
and the specialist toilet, which now means | 0:44:51 | 0:44:53
he doesn't need help from Anna to use the loo. | 0:44:53 | 0:44:56
The old lounge has been transformed into a relaxing space | 0:44:57 | 0:45:00
with a cool retro feel where the family can come and relax. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:04
We've widened the doorway, | 0:45:04 | 0:45:06
so Dave now has easy access from the kitchen. | 0:45:06 | 0:45:09
The super-efficient wood burning stove and improved house insulation | 0:45:09 | 0:45:12
will give the family added warmth through the winter months. | 0:45:12 | 0:45:16
Emma's room has a classical, yet relaxed, feel, | 0:45:18 | 0:45:20
which is very much in keeping with the period of the house, | 0:45:20 | 0:45:24
whilst Amy's room is finished in soft green tones, | 0:45:24 | 0:45:28
offset with simple, but timeless, bedroom furniture. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:32
Charlie told me to say that. | 0:45:32 | 0:45:34
And the third bedroom has been designed as a place for Anna | 0:45:34 | 0:45:37
to come to relax when she needs a moment on her own. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:40
The old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished | 0:45:40 | 0:45:43
with these cool subway tiles. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
Dave was cut off from his old garden | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
which has now been completely re-designed, | 0:45:51 | 0:45:53
and I must say, Charlie's done a brilliant job. | 0:45:53 | 0:45:57
The new space is totally wheelchair-friendly, | 0:45:57 | 0:45:59
so he can move around independently. | 0:45:59 | 0:46:02
We've put in this raised bed to grow veg, | 0:46:02 | 0:46:04
and it's finished off with the stunning cedar-clad room | 0:46:04 | 0:46:08
with greenhouse area for Dave to potter to his heart's content. | 0:46:08 | 0:46:11
The real challenge of this build was to give the family | 0:46:11 | 0:46:15
a home in which he has more independence, | 0:46:15 | 0:46:17
which, in turn, will take the pressure off his wife - | 0:46:17 | 0:46:21
somewhere which will allow Dave to face the future with dignity, | 0:46:21 | 0:46:24
and give Anna the space she so desperately needs. | 0:46:24 | 0:46:27
OK, so, if you're ready. Yeah. | 0:46:30 | 0:46:32
One, two, three! Look up! | 0:46:32 | 0:46:35
Oh, my God... | 0:46:35 | 0:46:38
God... | 0:46:38 | 0:46:40
It's unusual for us to show you the outside of a house first, | 0:46:40 | 0:46:43
but the important thing is about access, | 0:46:43 | 0:46:46
so we wanted to make sure that you could drive in, | 0:46:46 | 0:46:48
that you could get out, | 0:46:48 | 0:46:50
and as you can see, the ground very gently leads up to the front door. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:54
It's a new front door which is wider than it was, | 0:46:54 | 0:46:56
so you don't have the problems getting in and out. | 0:46:56 | 0:46:58
It's just unbelievable, it's very nice. It's brilliant, yeah. | 0:46:58 | 0:47:01
Shall we go and have a look? Oh, my God, it's just so easy. | 0:47:01 | 0:47:04
God... | 0:47:07 | 0:47:09
It really, really is beautiful. Oh, my God. | 0:47:09 | 0:47:12
From the moment you come in through the front door and off the pathway, | 0:47:12 | 0:47:15
everything is level throughout. | 0:47:15 | 0:47:17
That first day, I was wrestling you around the corner. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:19
I struggled getting him through the doors. I had to lift the wheelchair | 0:47:19 | 0:47:23
and it hurt me back and that, but, yeah, it's a... | 0:47:23 | 0:47:25
It's part of the reason you ended up in one room, | 0:47:25 | 0:47:28
because you just couldn't move. I couldn't do it, yeah. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:30
Oh, it's lovely. Thanks very much. | 0:47:30 | 0:47:32
So, shall we go in and see the front room, first of all? Yeah. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:35
Oh, God. Yeah. Here we go. | 0:47:35 | 0:47:38
There we go. In you come. | 0:47:43 | 0:47:45
I don't believe it! | 0:47:45 | 0:47:47
Oh, it's just...my God! Dave! | 0:47:47 | 0:47:49
You like it? Yeah, I love it, I love it! | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
It's just so different, it's unbelievable. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:55
HE SIGHS | 0:47:55 | 0:47:56
Brilliant. Dave, look! How did you know I wanted one of them? | 0:47:58 | 0:48:02
You got your fire. I have. You didn't even know, did you? | 0:48:02 | 0:48:07
That's beautiful, that, just in the right place and all. | 0:48:07 | 0:48:09
Have we done all right with the room? | 0:48:09 | 0:48:11
Oh, it's beautiful, thank you. Really is. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:13
I couldn't ask for anything more, it's fantastic. | 0:48:13 | 0:48:15
We've got another room to show you, | 0:48:15 | 0:48:17
so we'll turn you around in here | 0:48:17 | 0:48:19
and then get you out through that door. | 0:48:19 | 0:48:21
DAVE LAUGHS | 0:48:25 | 0:48:26
Oh, my God... | 0:48:26 | 0:48:28
It's fantastic. Can't believe it. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:34
Beautiful, ain't it? It is. It's lovely, it really is. | 0:48:35 | 0:48:38
OK, let's move on down through your kitchen space here. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:44
I just can't believe I can get you about so easy! | 0:48:44 | 0:48:47
If you just push on a little bit further, | 0:48:47 | 0:48:50
you can tuck underneath there. | 0:48:50 | 0:48:52
Oh, yeah, you can do some cooking! Oh, yeah! | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
You'll be able to do chopping, get involved with the cooking. | 0:48:55 | 0:48:58
Cos you like doing that, don't you? | 0:48:58 | 0:49:00
You can prep stuff and have somebody else chef, | 0:49:00 | 0:49:02
so you're involved with it. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:03
You've got two doors in front of you | 0:49:04 | 0:49:06
and the door to your right is where I think we should go next. | 0:49:06 | 0:49:09
What do you reckon is through there? Um, bedroom. | 0:49:09 | 0:49:12
Yeah. Ready to see this? Yeah. Right, let's go. | 0:49:16 | 0:49:19
Gosh. Is this my bedroom? | 0:49:27 | 0:49:30
I don't believe it! | 0:49:30 | 0:49:33
Oh, it's beautiful. | 0:49:33 | 0:49:35
It really is. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:36
It really is. You're not in the kitchen any more. No. | 0:49:38 | 0:49:43
You're not in the kitchen no more. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:44
It's really, really nice. | 0:49:44 | 0:49:46
Thank you, it's beautiful. It just doesn't seem real. It just... | 0:49:46 | 0:49:50
I knew you was good, but I didn't know you was this good. | 0:49:50 | 0:49:54
I really didn't. | 0:49:54 | 0:49:55
It's all the builders and suppliers around here that are this good. | 0:49:55 | 0:49:59
There's enough room for you to get the chair around the side there, | 0:49:59 | 0:50:02
this side of the bed is a hospital bed, | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
this side, a standard bed. | 0:50:05 | 0:50:07
You want it to be effective, | 0:50:07 | 0:50:09
it's got to work for you with a disability. | 0:50:09 | 0:50:11
But you don't want it to look like a hospital bed | 0:50:11 | 0:50:14
and you don't want it to look like a hospital room, or a disability room. | 0:50:14 | 0:50:17
It doesn't look like that. There is nothing about this... | 0:50:17 | 0:50:19
No, it doesn't look like it at all. It's beautiful. | 0:50:19 | 0:50:21
I can't wait until my first night's sleep in there, you know? | 0:50:21 | 0:50:25
I really can't. So, we need one more thing. What are we missing? | 0:50:25 | 0:50:29
Bathroom. Yes. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:32
Toilet. OK, let's go and have a look. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
God... | 0:50:42 | 0:50:43
Oh, you've got a toilet, Dave. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:48
More than a toilet, if you don't mind me saying so. | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
This is the all-singing, all-dancing look-after-yourself toilet. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:54
Once that you're on it, you can be left alone. | 0:50:54 | 0:50:57
So I don't have to ask for my wife to come and...? Fantastic! | 0:50:57 | 0:51:01
Honestly... | 0:51:01 | 0:51:03
HE SNIFFLES | 0:51:03 | 0:51:05
It's brilliant, that. | 0:51:05 | 0:51:06
That is fantastic. | 0:51:08 | 0:51:09
As a man, you don't want your wife to do any of that, you really don't. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:17
It's just not right. So what you've done is fantastic. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:21
This room seems to have hit you more than any of the others, really. | 0:51:21 | 0:51:25
Yeah, because I was doing things that I shouldn't be doing, | 0:51:25 | 0:51:30
if you know what I mean - I appreciate everything, | 0:51:30 | 0:51:33
but this, this was hard... | 0:51:33 | 0:51:35
I know it sounds really awful, but it was really hard. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:38
To go from husband and wife to carer is the toughest thing... | 0:51:38 | 0:51:43
And not get it back, that's the thing, | 0:51:43 | 0:51:45
you can't pull it back. | 0:51:45 | 0:51:47
I think, with what you've done here, you've pulled it back for us | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
to give us another chance. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:52
Not "another chance", but just to live life a bit better now. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:56
That's what I mean, if that makes sense? Yeah. | 0:51:56 | 0:51:59
And I think that's what you've done, and I can't thank you enough. | 0:51:59 | 0:52:02
Plainly, we've made access all areas downstairs really easy for you. | 0:52:05 | 0:52:11
But we can't access you upstairs | 0:52:11 | 0:52:13
and we've done a bit for the rooms upstairs for the girls as well. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:15
So I want to show the girls but not on their own, | 0:52:15 | 0:52:18
And we talked about getting Mum and daughters together. | 0:52:18 | 0:52:21
So, I wondered if I borrowed Anna? Yeah, sure. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23
But I don't want to leave you downstairs. No, I'll be fine here. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:26
I'm not leaving you on your own, | 0:52:26 | 0:52:27
so we thought we'd get some company for you. In you come, lads. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:30
I don't know if you know these two at all, but, um... | 0:52:30 | 0:52:33
Absolutely fantastic. How you doing? | 0:52:33 | 0:52:36
Can't thank you enough, Garry. Don't worry, mate. | 0:52:39 | 0:52:41
HE SOBS | 0:52:44 | 0:52:46
Shall we leave him with Garry and Ray? They can catch up, | 0:52:49 | 0:52:51
and we'll go and get the girls and see what they think. | 0:52:51 | 0:52:54
What do you think, mate? It's fantastic! | 0:52:57 | 0:52:59
There's a bit of a change here, | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
cos we've changed the rooms around a little bit. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:11
But also, I know you're going to need, occasionally, | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
to not be downstairs and have a space away, so what we've done | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
is we've made the room in front of you an extra room, | 0:53:17 | 0:53:21
either as a guest room | 0:53:21 | 0:53:22
or a room that you can stay in, sometimes, if you need to. OK. | 0:53:22 | 0:53:25
So, we're going in through that door next. | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
Oh, that's really nice. | 0:53:30 | 0:53:32
God... | 0:53:32 | 0:53:33
It is relaxing in here, isn't it? | 0:53:34 | 0:53:37
So, it's a little room, it was always going to be a little room, | 0:53:37 | 0:53:40
but it's a...if you want an escape, room. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:44
It's lovely, isn't it, Mum? Yeah. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
I like the colours. Don't! You'll set me off, stop it! | 0:53:48 | 0:53:52
Thank you. No, it's fine. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:54
No, it's just, for understanding, really. | 0:53:54 | 0:53:56
You know, cos it's very hard when you're not involved in it all, | 0:53:59 | 0:54:03
and I try to put a brave face on all the time... | 0:54:03 | 0:54:05
Well, we've talked about that. | 0:54:05 | 0:54:07
We've talked about you feeling guilty when you go out and enjoy yourself, | 0:54:07 | 0:54:11
and you've got to stop, because you should go out | 0:54:11 | 0:54:13
and everybody thinks that. | 0:54:13 | 0:54:14
The girls think that. It was a lot of what we were talking about? | 0:54:14 | 0:54:18
We've told him how we try and tell you, | 0:54:18 | 0:54:20
but you just don't listen, so maybe you'll listen to Nick. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
ALL LAUGH | 0:54:23 | 0:54:25
Oh, my God... | 0:54:29 | 0:54:31
It's really lovely. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
Sorry! | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
It's really, really lovely. | 0:54:38 | 0:54:39
Oh, it's really nice! Beautiful, isn't it? Yeah. | 0:54:47 | 0:54:50
Everyone's gone the extra mile | 0:54:55 | 0:54:56
to make sure that every part of it is finished off beautifully. | 0:54:56 | 0:54:59
A lot of that is due to the fact that there's guys that know your dad | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
and know what a great guy he is and wanted to do this for him, | 0:55:02 | 0:55:05
and for the family, too. | 0:55:05 | 0:55:06
And a lot of other people who know you as a family, | 0:55:06 | 0:55:08
and you're well-loved as a family, it's a great community around here. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
It's overwhelming, really. Yeah. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:13
Come on, let's get you downstairs to your dad, then. | 0:55:13 | 0:55:16
I don't believe it, it's fantastic. | 0:55:22 | 0:55:26
Wow. I wasn't expecting this. | 0:55:26 | 0:55:29
Oh, Dave, and your bedroom. | 0:55:29 | 0:55:31
I know. Cos you've always said you wanted a view from your room. | 0:55:31 | 0:55:34
It's fantastic. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:36
Oh, you can grow your own things. Oh, yeah. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:40
Oh, that's lovely. | 0:55:40 | 0:55:41
Like a summer house, I think. Yeah. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:44
It's kind of more than a summer house. | 0:55:45 | 0:55:47
It's insulated, it has electricity in here, there's an area to work, | 0:55:47 | 0:55:50
there's a TV, so you can be out here, if you want. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:52
That's fantastic, that. | 0:55:52 | 0:55:54
It's a potting shed on the end that you can grow things. | 0:55:54 | 0:55:56
You've got some herbs at the moment. | 0:55:56 | 0:55:58
This is fantastic - you should take it up. | 0:56:00 | 0:56:03
Is that right? It's not me. | 0:56:03 | 0:56:06
Let's go and meet some of the people who put the work in | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
and see if you can say a few words to them? I can, yes. | 0:56:08 | 0:56:11
Come on, then, let's go. | 0:56:11 | 0:56:13
APPLAUSE | 0:56:17 | 0:56:19
Thank you. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:20
Cracking job. | 0:56:29 | 0:56:30
What I'd like to say is, it's... | 0:56:33 | 0:56:35
With me stroke, it's been hard for me, | 0:56:35 | 0:56:39
but I've got to say, what you've done for us in this house | 0:56:39 | 0:56:43
over these nine days, is fantastic. | 0:56:43 | 0:56:46
Each one of you, I want to shake you by the hand | 0:56:46 | 0:56:49
cos you've done a fantastic job - I'm proud to know you as my workmen. | 0:56:49 | 0:56:54
Any time you want to knock on the door | 0:56:54 | 0:56:57
for a cup of tea, just knock on. | 0:56:57 | 0:56:58
I think there's about 200 of them! LAUGHTER | 0:56:58 | 0:57:01
Have you got enough mugs? | 0:57:01 | 0:57:02
It's fantastic, and again, | 0:57:02 | 0:57:04
I can't put it into words what you've done for us. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:06
I'd also like to mention whilst I'm here to all the... | 0:57:06 | 0:57:09
All the people who looked after me over the last 18 months, | 0:57:09 | 0:57:13
cos I can tell you, if it wasn't for them, I might not be here now, | 0:57:13 | 0:57:16
because it was that close. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:18
And, um... | 0:57:18 | 0:57:20
I really can't thank you enough. | 0:57:20 | 0:57:22
But I say, to all you workers here, | 0:57:22 | 0:57:26
you all deserve a ten. | 0:57:26 | 0:57:28
And I mean that from the bottom of my heart, you all need ten. | 0:57:28 | 0:57:31
APPLAUSE | 0:57:31 | 0:57:33
Thank you. | 0:57:41 | 0:57:42
Come and say hello. | 0:57:49 | 0:57:50
CHATTER | 0:57:55 | 0:57:57
When a family member comes down with an illness this serious, | 0:58:04 | 0:58:08
it puts unimaginable pressure on the family unit. | 0:58:08 | 0:58:12
And it seems unfair to me that those people who are trying | 0:58:12 | 0:58:14
to battle their illness are also becoming isolated and imprisoned | 0:58:14 | 0:58:18
in their own homes for want of better facilities. | 0:58:18 | 0:58:20
As a nation, we should be able to do something about that | 0:58:20 | 0:58:24
so that they can concentrate on getting well. | 0:58:24 | 0:58:26
These people thought it was unfair for Dave and his family to have | 0:58:26 | 0:58:29
to deal with all that, so they came and did something about it. | 0:58:29 | 0:58:32
Maybe you know somebody who needs your help. | 0:58:32 | 0:58:35
Thanks for doing the electrics. | 0:58:40 | 0:58:43
ALL LAUGH | 0:58:43 | 0:58:46
It's amazing, yeah. | 0:58:46 | 0:58:48
..can get about downstairs. | 0:58:48 | 0:58:49
I did the driveway for you. Did you? | 0:59:00 | 0:59:02
You're welcome. | 0:59:05 | 0:59:06
Did the 1966 World Cup | 0:59:10 | 0:59:11
mark the birth of modern football? | 0:59:11 | 0:59:14
Would we starve without bees? | 0:59:14 | 0:59:16
Why do Buddhists meditate? | 0:59:16 | 0:59:18
Is rocket science easier than you think? | 0:59:18 | 0:59:21
Well, BBC iWonder is full of great questions | 0:59:21 | 0:59:26 |
