Last time we were in Manchester, we took on the challenge of a lifetime,

0:00:020:00:05

all to help veterans,

0:00:050:00:06

like triple amputee Lamin Menneh...

0:00:060:00:08

I was devastated, because I thought, "I'm gone."

0:00:100:00:14

..and John Borge, who daily deals with post-traumatic stress syndrome.

0:00:140:00:18

Nothing prepares you for seeing children just...

0:00:180:00:21

..being hit by an IED and stuff like that.

0:00:230:00:25

It's just... Nothing prepares you for it.

0:00:250:00:27

What ex-servicemen like these needed was a community to feel secure

0:00:270:00:31

and supported. So, we started to build one that could last, here.

0:00:310:00:36

This street in Manchester will soon become the biggest build DIY SOS

0:00:360:00:39

has ever taken on, because we're here to turn empty houses

0:00:390:00:43

into homes for veterans.

0:00:430:00:44

It was a truly epic build,

0:00:460:00:47

so important that it even received a royal seal of approval.

0:00:470:00:50

We've got the same name.

0:00:510:00:53

Tell them what our name is.

0:00:530:00:55

-Prince of Darkness.

-There you go.

0:00:550:00:57

But it tested us like never before.

0:00:580:01:00

OMG!

0:01:000:01:01

In fact, it almost beat us.

0:01:020:01:05

This is the first time, ever,

0:01:050:01:07

that we've gone over the allocated time for us, in the 16 years we've

0:01:070:01:10

been doing this.

0:01:100:01:11

But through sheer persistence, the plan succeeded in transforming

0:01:110:01:15

this old, unloved street into the first stage of a

0:01:150:01:18

vibrant veterans' village, bringing the street back to life,

0:01:180:01:22

creating new homes for John and his son, Noah,

0:01:220:01:27

and Lamin and his family.

0:01:270:01:28

-Wow!

-Oh, my goodness.

0:01:300:01:33

Since our last visit, veterans' charity Haig Housing

0:01:330:01:36

has renovated another 15 empty properties, leaving just one home.

0:01:360:01:41

So, we're back to finish the job and build the very last home

0:01:420:01:47

for disabled veteran Simon and his children.

0:01:470:01:50

I don't want my kids living like this. It's just...

0:01:500:01:53

It's heartbreaking.

0:01:530:01:54

It's going to have some special challenges.

0:01:560:01:58

You don't run cable to it, you run cable from it.

0:01:580:02:00

'Course, it's a dynamo, ain't it?

0:02:000:02:02

Oh, I know, I know now.

0:02:020:02:04

But we are all pumped up for this and it feels like we're back

0:02:040:02:07

amongst friends, because we're back in the Veterans' Street.

0:02:070:02:10

This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:02:100:02:13

Simon Flores is a veteran and a single dad

0:02:270:02:30

to three lively children, Kobi, Lilly-Anne and Damaso.

0:02:300:02:34

Having separated from the kids' mother,

0:02:370:02:39

Simon has them four nights a week.

0:02:390:02:41

What we'll do now, we'll go home and have our tea,

0:02:410:02:44

but first things first, let's put these on the right feet.

0:02:440:02:47

-Mine's on the right feet.

-Yeah.

0:02:480:02:49

I'm on my feet, running around after them, you know.

0:02:490:02:52

Do you want it spiked? No.

0:02:520:02:55

Up and down the stairs, make sure they're fully dressed,

0:02:550:02:58

make sure they're fully fed.

0:02:580:03:00

They keep me busy all the time, which I love.

0:03:000:03:02

-Love you.

-CHILDREN:

-Love you!

0:03:020:03:05

SIMON GIGGLES

0:03:050:03:07

Apart from his kids, one of his biggest passions is cooking.

0:03:070:03:10

Come and have a taste for Daddy.

0:03:110:03:13

And this doting dad won't compromise on the food he feeds his family.

0:03:130:03:18

I just love cooking. It's a big part of my life.

0:03:180:03:20

I like to make sure the kids are eating proper home-cooked meals,

0:03:200:03:23

you know instead of frozen meals or frozen nuggets.

0:03:230:03:27

-Are you enjoying that?

-Yep.

0:03:270:03:30

It actually de-stresses me.

0:03:300:03:32

It's like I can forget all the troubles or any everyday problems

0:03:320:03:38

and I'm in my element in the kitchen.

0:03:380:03:42

I love it.

0:03:420:03:43

If being a single parent wasn't hard enough,

0:03:430:03:45

Simon has other challenges to contend with.

0:03:450:03:48

Who wants to take daddy's leg off?

0:03:480:03:50

-Me!

-Me!

-We'll have a look at it, see if it's sore.

0:03:500:03:52

OK, go on, then. They argue about who's taking my leg off.

0:03:520:03:55

They help out a lot.

0:03:550:03:57

-Oh!

-What?

0:03:570:03:58

Oh, look at that red.

0:03:580:04:01

-That's sore, ain't it?

-Aw! Yeah.

-Ow.

0:04:010:04:03

They understand that I get sore every now and then, it gets painful.

0:04:030:04:07

Aw, are you giving kisses?

0:04:070:04:09

SHE GIGGLES

0:04:090:04:10

Simon was injured on active duty in Iraq.

0:04:100:04:14

Having always dreamt of serving his country, he signed up, age 21,

0:04:140:04:18

but his dreams turned sour during his second tour

0:04:180:04:21

of the country in 2006.

0:04:210:04:24

The patrol was going fine, you know.

0:04:240:04:26

And as we were coming back, we were about 2K away from camp...

0:04:260:04:29

..and the next minute, explosion had happened.

0:04:310:04:33

LOUD EXPLOSION

0:04:330:04:35

You know, I thought this was it.

0:04:350:04:37

"They've got me. The swines have got me."

0:04:390:04:41

I felt a pain in my foot, which I thought was shrapnel or something.

0:04:440:04:49

You know?

0:04:490:04:50

As I went down to pull it out,

0:04:500:04:53

because I was going to pull that shrapnel right out

0:04:530:04:55

of my foot because it was...

0:04:550:04:57

the pain was excruciating.

0:04:570:05:00

As I went down...

0:05:000:05:01

..I was like...

0:05:020:05:04

"..hang on, where's my, where's my...?"

0:05:050:05:07

"I've got no foot."

0:05:070:05:09

I had my foot in my hand.

0:05:090:05:11

They literally blew my foot off.

0:05:110:05:13

Despite his devastating injury, Simon refused to let it

0:05:150:05:18

break his spirit.

0:05:180:05:19

After my second day in the field hospital, I was over it.

0:05:210:05:24

"It's happened.

0:05:250:05:27

"Deal with it now.

0:05:270:05:29

"It's not going to grow back.

0:05:290:05:31

"So, let's stop dwelling on the past, and move forward."

0:05:310:05:35

I love in the mirror and I see a man who's evolved from losing

0:05:390:05:44

half his leg,

0:05:440:05:46

to a man who's got three beautiful kids.

0:05:460:05:50

So, they do keep me sane,

0:05:500:05:53

even though they stress me out sometimes.

0:05:530:05:55

But they keep me firmly on the ground.

0:05:550:05:57

Home for Simon is this two-bed council house.

0:05:590:06:03

But the house really isn't helping this amputee,

0:06:030:06:06

as he's in almost constant pain with his leg injury.

0:06:060:06:08

When I'm cooking dinner or anything like that, you know, I get fatigued.

0:06:100:06:15

Say, like, ten minutes,

0:06:150:06:16

because I'm constantly on my foot and I'm putting pressure

0:06:160:06:19

and it just gets so tired.

0:06:190:06:21

The upstairs bathroom isn't designed to make everyday tasks,

0:06:210:06:25

like washing, easy, and with no downstairs bathroom,

0:06:250:06:28

it's a struggle to go to the toilet.

0:06:280:06:30

I would love to have a downstairs loo, you know.

0:06:300:06:35

It's going up them stairs.

0:06:350:06:36

I mean, they are quite steep, I think, and I do find it difficult,

0:06:360:06:39

you know, to walk up and down the stairs.

0:06:390:06:41

Pick them up, please and put them away now.

0:06:420:06:45

It's my pony!

0:06:450:06:46

With only two bedrooms, Simon has to share his bed

0:06:460:06:49

with two-year-old Damaso.

0:06:490:06:51

He just isn't getting enough rest, and the house work is getting

0:06:510:06:54

on top of him.

0:06:540:06:56

I don't want my kids living like this. It's just...

0:06:560:06:59

It's heart breaking.

0:06:590:07:00

But when the children are at their mum's,

0:07:020:07:04

Simon is left alone and isolated.

0:07:040:07:07

I have a handful of friends here.

0:07:070:07:09

But I can't speak to them like I can with veterans and ex-servicemen.

0:07:090:07:15

It would be so good just to get back into that community again.

0:07:160:07:19

His sister, Amanda, knows just how much it affects his morale.

0:07:220:07:26

I know he comes off as he's got so much confidence,

0:07:260:07:28

he's a bit of a likely lad.

0:07:280:07:30

But actually, he's just such a sensitive soul, and life,

0:07:330:07:38

when it's hit him, it's hit him hard, but he hides it so well.

0:07:380:07:41

This decorated war hero feels forgotten.

0:07:420:07:46

That one's from when daddy got hurt.

0:07:460:07:48

That belongs on there.

0:07:480:07:49

And he's struggling with Civvy Street.

0:07:490:07:52

-Do you want these?

-Why, do you want them?

0:07:520:07:55

-Yeah.

-Maybe when you're older.

0:07:550:07:57

Love you.

0:07:570:07:58

It's hard for somebody to admit that they need help.

0:07:580:08:01

But...

0:08:010:08:02

..there's that time and there's that point where you just say...

0:08:040:08:07

"..I need the help."

0:08:090:08:10

Yeah, I need the help.

0:08:130:08:14

So, we're going to move Simon and his kids into the last house

0:08:190:08:23

on Canada Street...

0:08:230:08:25

There we go.

0:08:250:08:26

..one year after we started the project.

0:08:260:08:28

So, this is going to be your house.

0:08:280:08:30

-It's big, isn't it?

-Do you like it?

-Yeah.

0:08:320:08:34

I mean, difficult to imagine, I know, as a house at the moment,

0:08:340:08:36

-but you're right, there's quite a bit of space.

-Yeah, there is.

0:08:360:08:39

It's just what, you know, the kids need, as well.

0:08:390:08:41

-And then through here is going to be the kitchen area.

-Kitchen area.

0:08:410:08:45

Yeah! Wow.

0:08:450:08:47

How will it be, being in an environment and a street

0:08:470:08:49

where you know that a lot of the other families living here

0:08:490:08:52

have similar experiences to you?

0:08:520:08:53

It'll be fantastic because, you know, where I live,

0:08:530:08:57

there's not many people I can talk to about

0:08:570:08:59

my past experiences and stuff, and not many people understand

0:08:590:09:03

what veterans or, you know, people like myself

0:09:030:09:06

have actually been through.

0:09:060:09:08

Well, there's an army of trades and volunteers here today

0:09:080:09:11

who do understand, and they're here to rebuild Simon's life.

0:09:110:09:15

APPLAUSE

0:09:150:09:17

-Morning everyone.

-Morning.

0:09:170:09:19

I just want to say, you know, all the people that are volunteering,

0:09:200:09:23

this means a lot to me.

0:09:230:09:25

It's... Wow.

0:09:250:09:26

It's...

0:09:260:09:28

Thank you. Erm...

0:09:280:09:29

Er...

0:09:310:09:33

-Has it kind of hit you a bit?

-Yeah, it has actually.

0:09:350:09:38

I didn't think it would.

0:09:380:09:39

You know, I'm just overwhelmed, you know,

0:09:390:09:42

the amount of volunteers that are here, it's brilliant.

0:09:420:09:44

As you look around, a lot of familiar faces,

0:09:440:09:46

a lot of people who came and helped us the first time around.

0:09:460:09:49

So, in ten days, you're going to walk back into

0:09:490:09:51

a fully finished house, and that means that, effectively,

0:09:510:09:53

that'll be the end of the mission we started out on.

0:09:530:09:55

-Are we up for this? ALL:

-Yeah!

0:09:550:09:58

There you go.

0:09:580:09:59

And, as ever, Manchester hasn't let us down.

0:09:590:10:02

What a great turnout we've got.

0:10:020:10:03

It's lovely to be back.

0:10:050:10:06

It's nice that we're going to be finishing it.

0:10:060:10:08

Are we happy, boys?

0:10:080:10:10

Shaun was here last year,

0:10:100:10:12

Sam was here last year, and Simon's coming up later and him and Sam

0:10:120:10:16

will run the job, and I'll just sit in the Winnebago,

0:10:160:10:19

you know what I mean.

0:10:190:10:20

It's really nice to see everybody back.

0:10:210:10:23

It's amazing the pull that the military have.

0:10:230:10:25

You know, they just come in here...

0:10:250:10:27

It's just lovely, lovely.

0:10:270:10:28

Lovely to see you again.

0:10:280:10:30

What's your vibe on this one? How are you feeling about this one?

0:10:300:10:32

Great, great. Lots of old faces, yeah. It's like...

0:10:320:10:35

..we're finishing the job.

0:10:360:10:38

We started together, we'll finish together.

0:10:380:10:40

But, unfortunately, one of our family members is missing today.

0:10:400:10:43

Poor old Chris has got a terrible migraine.

0:10:430:10:46

So, we've lost him for the day.

0:10:460:10:47

I hope it's only just today, because I need him back here, ASAP.

0:10:470:10:51

Yeah, too right. These boys don't mess around.

0:10:510:10:53

The internal walls should hopefully be up by the end of the day.

0:10:530:10:57

-First window in.

-See, we've only been here an hour

0:10:570:10:59

and we've already got the windows in, but there's lots to do,

0:10:590:11:02

and our designer, Gabby, has got big plans for this old house.

0:11:020:11:07

What specific things are you going to be piling into this house

0:11:070:11:10

for him and his family?

0:11:100:11:12

Well, the tricky thing about Simon is, despite the fact he's had

0:11:120:11:16

this horrific injury, is that he just wants to crack on.

0:11:160:11:19

You know, he's a proper soldier. He doesn't want complicated equipment.

0:11:190:11:23

He doesn't want anyone feeling sorry for him.

0:11:230:11:25

-So I've got to...

-Stairlift or...?

0:11:250:11:27

No, he doesn't want it. He does not want it, and it's actually bad,

0:11:270:11:31

I think, for his morale. He is really, really upset

0:11:310:11:35

at even the thought of it.

0:11:350:11:36

So what I've got to do is put lots of, kind of...

0:11:360:11:38

I suppose in military terms, like, covert ops assistance.

0:11:380:11:41

So I've got to put lots of things that are going to help him.

0:11:410:11:45

He can lean on things.

0:11:450:11:46

There's lots of spaces for him to sit down.

0:11:460:11:48

We just have to really think our way round it.

0:11:480:11:50

It's invisible, but it's there to help him.

0:11:500:11:53

Right, pay attention, you horrible lot! This is what we're up to.

0:11:530:11:56

Downstairs, the family lounge at the front will give

0:11:560:11:58

Simon and his kids space, but it could also act as

0:11:580:12:00

a breakaway sanctuary if Simon needs to rest.

0:12:000:12:03

In the kitchen, at the back,

0:12:030:12:04

a huge centre-piece table will help draw the family together.

0:12:040:12:08

They'll be able to bond over Dad's delicious home-cooked meals.

0:12:080:12:11

Importantly for Simon, we'll be installing a downstairs bathroom,

0:12:110:12:16

easily accessible through the large utility space

0:12:160:12:19

and specially-widened doors.

0:12:190:12:20

It's upstairs where the advantage of having a double width house

0:12:200:12:23

really shows. Three generous bedrooms means that Dad

0:12:230:12:27

will get his own room,

0:12:270:12:29

and the kids will have plenty of their own space

0:12:290:12:31

in which to play and grow into.

0:12:310:12:33

And the bathroom will be bespoke for Simon,

0:12:330:12:35

designed to support him in subtle ways

0:12:350:12:37

that means this proud ex-soldier retains his dignity.

0:12:370:12:41

Problem is, Gabby's big plans for the bathroom

0:12:410:12:44

are going to put a strain on the fabric of this old house.

0:12:440:12:48

So, my worry is - these walls are rubbish.

0:12:500:12:54

And they're really old and crumbly, and I'm trying to hang

0:12:540:12:58

a cantilevered bench off this.

0:12:580:13:00

Not just for fluffy design reasons, but because we need a dry zone,

0:13:000:13:03

then moving into the wet zone, so he can remove his foot,

0:13:030:13:06

scooch along the bench and then have a lovely shower and then come back.

0:13:060:13:11

This bench needs to take a lot of weight,

0:13:110:13:13

so these walls must be ply lined.

0:13:130:13:17

And the same throughout this house,

0:13:170:13:18

there are various sections that we have to have lined,

0:13:180:13:21

so they can take the strength of what's going to hang on them.

0:13:210:13:24

She's very good, isn't she?

0:13:240:13:25

Now, I've left Jules in charge of the garden,

0:13:250:13:27

which may have been a mistake.

0:13:270:13:29

You don't mind me saying? What the hell is going on?

0:13:290:13:32

I walked out of here with a perfectly flat garden...

0:13:320:13:35

and you've made holes all over it.

0:13:350:13:36

Well, what we've done - you know we like to do things properly.

0:13:360:13:40

-Yes.

-We didn't like the look of the drainage.

0:13:400:13:42

It was really old-fashioned, everything would've blocked

0:13:420:13:45

-and hung up in it.

-You reckon?

-And the thing is, now is the time

0:13:450:13:48

to do it, innit? You don't want to, like, set a patio

0:13:480:13:50

and then start having problems with the drains and have to rip it

0:13:500:13:53

all up, so we've replaced everything.

0:13:530:13:56

Taken the whole system out?

0:13:560:13:58

The whole system. So everything's...

0:13:580:14:00

Yeah, everything's going to be brand-new.

0:14:000:14:02

You quite like a bit of drainage, don't you?

0:14:020:14:04

Yeah, I don't mind a bit of drainage.

0:14:040:14:05

It's all about laying pipes, really.

0:14:050:14:07

-And over the years...

-Yeah.

0:14:070:14:09

-..you've laid a bit of pipe, haven't you?

-I have.

0:14:090:14:12

Well, he seems happy enough, I'm going back inside.

0:14:120:14:14

You know what that is up there? That's a Flanagan.

0:14:150:14:17

-I know, the Flanagans are back.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-Let's go up.

0:14:170:14:20

I'll go up and say hello. Come on, I'll introduce you.

0:14:200:14:23

Mr Flanagan, thank you.

0:14:230:14:25

Mr Flanagan is actually a councillor, who worked with us

0:14:250:14:27

all the way through the last one. From the council's point of view,

0:14:270:14:30

last year, fantastic job of everybody joining in.

0:14:300:14:33

Is it something that's ongoing?

0:14:330:14:35

Has it changed how people think about things?

0:14:350:14:37

It sure has. I mean, the vets that have come into the area

0:14:370:14:40

have engaged with the community and we've had them involved in

0:14:400:14:43

various events, but the community around them as well,

0:14:430:14:45

it's really lifted them.

0:14:450:14:47

As you can see, the street, it wasn't just the vets' house

0:14:470:14:49

that you did, you did the whole street, and from what was

0:14:490:14:52

a very rundown street, there's a real energy now.

0:14:520:14:54

Take an image of what you first came to and what you did.

0:14:540:14:57

Amazing, amazing job.

0:14:570:14:59

Being back on the street to finish it off is proof

0:15:010:15:03

that the real legacy is the birth of a special community.

0:15:030:15:07

And it's one that's helped veteran and PTSD sufferer Mark,

0:15:070:15:11

who has moved onto the street.

0:15:110:15:13

One of the best things is, even if you're having a really bad week,

0:15:140:15:18

it's easy for other people to identify that much more

0:15:180:15:21

than in, say, a normal community, where you haven't got...

0:15:210:15:24

a high percentage of veterans,

0:15:240:15:26

all kind of suffering from similar conditions, and types of disorders.

0:15:260:15:30

So, if I'm kind of in the house,

0:15:300:15:32

and people will notice that much more easily here,

0:15:320:15:34

that I'm not being as kind of sociable as I normally have

0:15:340:15:37

and they'll kind of make more of an effort to dig me out

0:15:370:15:39

and cheer me up. And it's the same with people, like John

0:15:390:15:41

and other guys on the street. If I notice they're struggling,

0:15:410:15:44

I'll be able to identify that really easily and help them out.

0:15:440:15:47

It's all a part of that bigger community picture, really.

0:15:470:15:50

It's great.

0:15:500:15:51

It's clear the street is working, and someone who knows just

0:15:510:15:54

how much Simon and the kids will flourish here

0:15:540:15:57

is his older sister, Amanda.

0:15:570:15:59

You can never quite understand what these guys have been through,

0:15:590:16:02

and having residents that he'll befriend

0:16:020:16:05

and being part of a community.

0:16:050:16:08

I've heard the residents here are just so close knit.

0:16:080:16:11

I think it's exactly what he needs,

0:16:110:16:13

because he needs support around him, a social support,

0:16:130:16:16

you know, that he hasn't got right now.

0:16:160:16:19

-So, it's perfect.

-When you talk to him about it, he's like...

0:16:190:16:21

-He does his cheeky chappy thing, doesn't he?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:16:210:16:24

He's like, "Ah, no, everything's all right, everything's all right, everything's all right."

0:16:240:16:28

But you can see actually underneath, everything's not all right...

0:16:280:16:31

-No.

-..and he's fluffing over it.

0:16:310:16:32

-A lot of bravado.

-Yeah.

-He's struggled to find a way to deal with

0:16:320:16:35

everything that he needs to deal with, that most of us do in life,

0:16:350:16:38

whilst feeling very disabled.

0:16:380:16:40

-It's a challenge for him, isn't it?

-Of course it is.

0:16:400:16:42

You know, nobody ever sets out to be a single parent

0:16:420:16:44

and that's really effectively what he is.

0:16:440:16:46

It really is a challenge.

0:16:470:16:49

I think having three kids is a challenge for anyone.

0:16:490:16:52

I don't have three of them at any one time!

0:16:520:16:55

I can handle them quite well,

0:16:550:16:57

-but he's amazing with them, with those kids.

-Is he?

0:16:570:17:01

Yeah. Oh, God, yeah.

0:17:010:17:02

How he does it, I do not know.

0:17:020:17:04

With one leg, no idea.

0:17:040:17:06

The patience of a saint.

0:17:060:17:07

-Do you think he can grow in place like this?

-Absolutely, yeah.

0:17:070:17:10

Having that community spirit and having what will feel

0:17:100:17:13

like an extended family, it'll just give him that support that he needs.

0:17:130:17:18

So, this build is all about building a home that works for Simon,

0:17:180:17:22

with neat and subtle touches that will help him.

0:17:220:17:24

Trouble is, Gabby's still adding extra bits and pieces to her design,

0:17:240:17:28

which isn't good for Mark, but hilarious for us.

0:17:280:17:30

Can I open that fireplace up?

0:17:300:17:32

Yeah. Yeah. So you're putting a fire in there as well?

0:17:320:17:34

-Yeah.

-Oh, yeah, that's nice.

0:17:340:17:36

So I'm putting a fire that you don't know about in there.

0:17:380:17:41

In a hole that he doesn't know about.

0:17:410:17:42

In a hole that you don't know about, and I'm panelling the room.

0:17:420:17:46

And I'm doing brick slips in there on the wall.

0:17:460:17:49

Brick slips on what?

0:17:510:17:52

On two walls in the kitchen.

0:17:520:17:54

You're putting brick slips in the kitchen?

0:17:540:17:56

He's about to go.

0:17:560:17:58

He's about to go!

0:17:580:17:59

I told him to be nice, but he's about to go.

0:17:590:18:02

NICK LAUGHS

0:18:020:18:03

How is anyone going to clean brick slips?

0:18:030:18:06

Really? How is anybody going to clean brick slips?

0:18:060:18:09

We knew it couldn't last.

0:18:090:18:10

You can't put brick slips on a wall in the kitchen, can you?!

0:18:100:18:14

What's so funny?

0:18:140:18:15

Are you mad? Are you absolutely mad?

0:18:150:18:18

She's not putting brick slips on anything in the kitchen,

0:18:180:18:20

-she just wanted to see how far she could push it.

-I am, I am.

0:18:200:18:23

-You can't really put brick slips in.

-I am. It'll be fine.

0:18:230:18:26

Well, there's in point in arguing with Gabby

0:18:260:18:28

when she's got an idea in her head, but, to be fair, she has put a lot

0:18:280:18:30

of thought into the kitchen.

0:18:300:18:32

This massive space will become the heart of the house.

0:18:320:18:34

It's where Simon will be able to cook,

0:18:340:18:36

and we know how important that is to him in his mental health,

0:18:360:18:39

as well as his physical health, and feeding the kids.

0:18:390:18:43

As you can see, we're making progress downstairs

0:18:430:18:45

and upstairs, too.

0:18:450:18:46

All the partitions are happening, so we're starting to see

0:18:460:18:49

separate rooms. This is the bedroom, this is another bedroom.

0:18:490:18:51

Another bedroom over here, and then finally,

0:18:510:18:53

the big family bathroom in this area.

0:18:530:18:55

All the electrics are in, the plumbing's starting to go in.

0:18:550:18:58

It's been a pretty good day and there's a great vibe on site.

0:18:580:19:01

In fact, there's a great vibe on the street.

0:19:010:19:04

There's my mate, Lamin.

0:19:040:19:05

These three are Lamy's kids.

0:19:080:19:10

And there's more over there. Hello!

0:19:100:19:11

-How are you doing?

-Fine, fine.

0:19:130:19:15

-Nice to see you.

-Nice to see you, too!

0:19:150:19:17

How's your house?

0:19:170:19:19

-Fine.

-Do you like it?

0:19:190:19:20

-Love it!

-Your bedroom still good?

0:19:200:19:23

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:19:230:19:24

Isn't that lovely? Kids hanging out of the windows, chatting,

0:19:240:19:27

kids playing in the street, family looking out the window.

0:19:270:19:30

It's just how it should be.

0:19:300:19:32

Love it, love it.

0:19:320:19:34

It's day two of the build.

0:19:370:19:39

Morning.

0:19:390:19:40

And look who's back.

0:19:400:19:42

Morning. Are you all right, chaps?

0:19:420:19:44

Here we are, look.

0:19:440:19:46

The last one.

0:19:460:19:47

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:19:470:19:50

Return of the Chris!

0:19:500:19:52

Yes, he's back, and not a moment too soon.

0:19:520:19:54

Billy and his boys have been going like, well, billyo.

0:19:540:19:58

This is now finished up here.

0:19:580:20:00

We can give it to the plasterers,

0:20:000:20:02

and we can now go downstairs and concentrate on the kitchen area.

0:20:020:20:05

Well done, Bill, I think he deserves a little treat.

0:20:050:20:08

Bill, Bill, Bill, wait, wait, I have some news for you.

0:20:080:20:11

What sport do you love most in the world?

0:20:120:20:14

-Well, football.

-Yeah, thanks.

0:20:170:20:19

Why was that such a long time to say...?

0:20:190:20:21

Because sometimes you get disillusioned with the way

0:20:210:20:24

some of the players react and act, but football is my passion.

0:20:240:20:28

But you live for the big games, don't you?

0:20:280:20:30

-The massive games.

-There's actually quite a big game on in Manchester,

0:20:300:20:33

-isn't there, today?

-I know.

-I've actually managed to get two tickets.

0:20:330:20:36

You.. Is he having me on?

0:20:360:20:38

"Two tickets will be left on City home reception

0:20:410:20:44

"at the Etihad Stadium for collection at 4.30pm by Billy.

0:20:440:20:47

"Thanks for doing what you're doing in our community."

0:20:470:20:50

INDISTINCT

0:20:500:20:51

It's amazing.

0:20:540:20:56

Oh, Bill!

0:20:560:20:58

To see it live, one of the top games you're going to see in the football.

0:20:580:21:02

-You know...

-You've gone and welled up, haven't you?

0:21:020:21:04

Yeah, cos you don't get chances like that, do you?

0:21:040:21:07

Two tickets. Two!

0:21:070:21:08

-Two tickets!

-Who can I take?

0:21:080:21:11

Well, you could take like one of your best friends.

0:21:110:21:13

Yeah, cos they've go the time to get up from Welwyn Garden City,

0:21:130:21:16

-haven't they?

-Or you could choose somebody that's

0:21:160:21:18

really close to you, maybe...

0:21:180:21:20

Chris likes football now, because since he's been working with us...

0:21:200:21:24

Chris has got to work late tonight. It's a plastering day,

0:21:240:21:27

he's doing a lot of prep around here, so Chris can't make it,

0:21:270:21:29

your mates can't make it from Welwyn. Who could you possibly...?

0:21:290:21:32

-Jules, Jules.

-Jules doesn't even like football!

0:21:320:21:34

Who else might you be able to ask?!

0:21:340:21:36

I'll have to ask one of my sparks.

0:21:360:21:38

Man City aren't the only generous people around here, of course.

0:21:420:21:45

These plumbers have not only given up their time,

0:21:450:21:47

but they've paid for the materials out of their own pockets.

0:21:470:21:50

Aren't people magnificent?

0:21:500:21:52

So, are you ex-forces yourself?

0:21:520:21:54

-I am.

-You are.

-Yeah.

0:21:540:21:55

Is that why you really wanted to get involved and go the extra mile?

0:21:550:21:58

Well, to be honest, being ex-forces doesn't really come into it.

0:21:580:22:02

It's just about giving something back a little bit.

0:22:020:22:04

When a situation comes along or you're given the opportunity for you

0:22:040:22:08

to do something, using your skills, to help somebody,

0:22:080:22:10

that clearly that has helped us,

0:22:100:22:13

we're all over that and make sure it happens for him.

0:22:130:22:16

Brilliant. Brilliant.

0:22:160:22:17

I'm really chuffed. Thank you, lads, I really appreciate it.

0:22:170:22:20

We'll get out of your way and let you get along with doing it.

0:22:200:22:22

Thank you. Amazing, lads, eh?

0:22:220:22:23

And elsewhere, the commitment to the cause is evident in the garden.

0:22:230:22:26

Now, we don't have Chelsea gold medal designer Adam Frost

0:22:260:22:29

this time round, we've got Gabs.

0:22:290:22:31

Less green finger, more gold finger.

0:22:310:22:33

The main thing is that she keeps it simple.

0:22:330:22:35

Yeah, well we've got loads to fit in here.

0:22:370:22:39

Simon wants to be a personal trainer.

0:22:390:22:41

-OK. Good.

-And so we're going to put some amazing outdoor gym equipment,

0:22:410:22:45

that we've tailored specifically to his needs, and also

0:22:450:22:48

will be really fun for the kids.

0:22:480:22:50

I think Manchester's the ideal place to have outdoor gym equipment.

0:22:500:22:52

It's not known for its weather at all.

0:22:520:22:54

Darling, it'll be fine, he's a soldier.

0:22:540:22:56

So we're trying to build an environment in which it will

0:22:560:22:59

be difficult for him to train because he's a soldier?

0:22:590:23:02

There's an army saying, my love, "skin is waterproof", it'll be fine.

0:23:020:23:05

-Is that right?

-Yeah. And then we're going to plant loads of fruit,

0:23:050:23:08

loads of veg, cos Simon's also really keen on healthy eating.

0:23:080:23:12

He loves cooking for his kids. He really prides himself.

0:23:120:23:15

-OK. That's very lovely.

-Yeah.

0:23:150:23:16

So, we're keeping some high-end design loveliness...

0:23:160:23:20

-Of course.

-..in amongst what is actually a fruit and veg garden

0:23:200:23:23

with a gym in it.

0:23:230:23:25

You just ruin everything, don't you?

0:23:250:23:27

-Here's your mate from last year.

-Paul.

-Paul, come over.

0:23:270:23:31

Paul, come here.

0:23:310:23:32

If I bring you over here and she talks to you,

0:23:320:23:34

-do you promise not to get emotional?

-I won't cry, no, not this time.

0:23:340:23:37

-Are you sure?

-Are you going to cry, you look a bit serious?

-I might cry.

0:23:370:23:40

-I'm just tired.

-So, how is it to be back then?

0:23:400:23:42

Finishing off a street, knowing that there'll be 17 families

0:23:420:23:45

in it now, that didn't have homes before?

0:23:450:23:47

It's great. It is.

0:23:470:23:48

-It means a lot.

-Has it changed things for you?

0:23:480:23:50

Has it changed your life being involved in this?

0:23:500:23:53

-If I could do it every day now, I would do.

-Would you?

-I would.

0:23:550:23:57

I find this better than putting my hand in my pocket

0:23:570:24:01

-and putting some money in a jar, if you know what I mean.

-Yeah.

0:24:010:24:03

Because you see the result of what you've done.

0:24:030:24:06

And nowhere is that more keenly felt than with our first two residents,

0:24:070:24:11

Lamin and John.

0:24:110:24:12

When we first met triple amputee Lamin,

0:24:150:24:17

he was struggling to be a father to his five children and just wanted to

0:24:170:24:20

be able to get upstairs and read his kids a bedtime story.

0:24:200:24:23

I can give them what they want. I can be there for them.

0:24:240:24:27

And PTSD sufferer John, that experienced such severe flashbacks

0:24:280:24:32

that he was barely able to leave his house.

0:24:320:24:35

It's just like living in, like, a constant fear of being haunted

0:24:350:24:39

by the things that you've seen and done.

0:24:390:24:42

A year on and the difference in these two men

0:24:420:24:45

is nothing short of incredible.

0:24:450:24:47

Nice to see you two boys in here together.

0:24:520:24:53

And, of course, from the moment that you became neighbours,

0:24:530:24:56

-you also became buddies.

-Yeah.

0:24:560:24:58

So, as a project, we were hoping it was going to work,

0:24:580:25:01

but it was your lives that were experimented with.

0:25:010:25:05

-We're the guinea pigs.

-Kind of, yeah.

0:25:050:25:07

Has it worked for you guy, individually?

0:25:070:25:10

In 12 months there's been a massive improvement in me, definitely.

0:25:100:25:14

You can see it.

0:25:140:25:15

You know, the man that I met 12 months ago when we first came up

0:25:150:25:17

to do the project was a different man altogether.

0:25:170:25:19

I think the best thing for me was before I didn't have

0:25:190:25:22

no social network whatsoever or no friends

0:25:220:25:25

cos I wasn't from this area, really.

0:25:250:25:27

Since that build, I've become really good friends with a lot of the volunteers

0:25:270:25:31

that worked on the project and I've build an awesome social network.

0:25:310:25:36

Going back over a few moments from last year as well,

0:25:360:25:38

one of the things that a lot of people talked about was Lamin.

0:25:380:25:43

When I talked to you about the difficulties you were in,

0:25:430:25:45

you were very strong and in control

0:25:450:25:47

and yet when you finally walked down the road and saw the house...

0:25:470:25:51

LAMIN LAUGHS AND SOBS

0:25:510:25:53

..that was like a massive emotional release for you.

0:25:530:25:56

What was it that you saw that suddenly made you emotional, do you think?

0:25:560:25:59

When I was walking along, there were so many people

0:25:590:26:01

putting some effort just to make this happen.

0:26:010:26:04

As a human being, it was overwhelming,

0:26:040:26:09

so much so that I can't contain it.

0:26:090:26:10

-So it was about the fact that people care.

-Yeah, people care.

0:26:100:26:13

It's just so overwhelming the amount of people that are here

0:26:130:26:17

to actually support this.

0:26:170:26:19

At the time I was thinking that nobody cared about you at all.

0:26:190:26:22

And, again, I felt so alone and isolated,

0:26:220:26:24

but then to see everybody there coming together

0:26:240:26:27

was just unbelievable.

0:26:270:26:29

It's so important to show our veterans that people do care

0:26:290:26:32

and everyone on site is pushing hard

0:26:320:26:34

to get this final house completed in time.

0:26:340:26:38

It's like theatre.

0:26:380:26:40

They're all working in unison, lovely.

0:26:400:26:42

Well, it's not Shakespeare, but they are shaking a leg,

0:26:420:26:45

and it's starting to look like a front room.

0:26:450:26:47

I'm hoping, right - don't told me to it -

0:26:480:26:50

that all the plastering will be done by tomorrow evening.

0:26:500:26:53

The house, finished.

0:26:530:26:55

That's where I want to be.

0:26:550:26:57

Hallway, hallway all skimmed out up here.

0:26:570:26:59

Look, whoosh.

0:26:590:27:01

Beautiful.

0:27:010:27:04

And in here all plastered out, ready for tiling now.

0:27:040:27:07

We can clean this out.

0:27:070:27:09

We've got the shower tray in.

0:27:090:27:10

Hold on, we have got the shower tray in.

0:27:100:27:15

And it's not the only shower.

0:27:150:27:16

The weather's taken a turn for the worst.

0:27:160:27:19

Well, it is Manchester.

0:27:190:27:20

Still, this hasn't stopped a very special little visitor coming

0:27:200:27:23

to check up on your progress.

0:27:230:27:25

It's Noah. Hasn't he grown?

0:27:260:27:29

Hello, young man.

0:27:300:27:32

What do you think to this back garden then, do you like it?

0:27:320:27:34

-Yeah.

-It'll be nice when it's finished.

0:27:340:27:37

You're going to have some new neighbours, aren't you?

0:27:370:27:39

-Yeah.

-Yeah. Another young family moving in?

0:27:390:27:42

Yeah. You need a hat for bricks doesn't fall on you.

0:27:420:27:47

Oh, I should have a hat on.

0:27:470:27:48

Yeah, I should have a hat on,

0:27:480:27:49

but lucky I'm outside and there's no scaffolding above me.

0:27:490:27:52

-Yeah.

-THEY LAUGH

0:27:520:27:54

Looks like we've got ourselves a little health and safety expert there.

0:27:540:27:57

-Well, Noah, it's lovely to meet you again. I'll say goodbye.

-Bye.

0:27:570:28:01

Bye-bye. Lovely to meet you.

0:28:010:28:02

-See you tomorrow, John.

-Yeah, see you later.

0:28:020:28:04

All right, I'm going to go and plaster these walls up.

0:28:040:28:06

-Yeah, no worries.

-See ya.

0:28:060:28:07

Yeah, let's get you out of the rain.

0:28:070:28:09

So it's a nice hot bath and a mug of cocoa for Noah,

0:28:090:28:12

several hours of plastering for Chris,

0:28:120:28:14

and for me, it's a night at the footie.

0:28:140:28:16

Yeah, Billy finally saw sense and invited me!

0:28:160:28:19

Morning. Morning.

0:28:230:28:25

Morning. Morning. Morning!

0:28:250:28:27

Oh, he's like a little cockerel.

0:28:280:28:30

I said cockerel.

0:28:300:28:32

Bacon sandwiches all round and the vibe is good on site.

0:28:320:28:35

The enthusiasm that was generated last time inspired some, like Paul Matson,

0:28:350:28:40

who wanted to do his own version of the project in Hull.

0:28:400:28:43

-Nice to have you all here and...

-Yeah, of course.

0:28:430:28:45

..you were with us a year ago,

0:28:450:28:47

and it made such a profound difference on you,

0:28:470:28:49

-that you decided to try and make a difference where you live, so tell us about that?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:28:490:28:53

Well, basically I went back to Hull, having done what we'd done here,

0:28:530:28:56

and realised that lots of veterans are in need.

0:28:560:28:59

Cos I really didn't know that lots of veterans was in need.

0:28:590:29:01

I fell down a little bit when I went out of the army,

0:29:010:29:04

and then came here, seen what we was doing here,

0:29:040:29:07

then went back to Hull and seen some derelict houses and thought - why not?

0:29:070:29:10

Paul enlisted the help of some mates,

0:29:120:29:14

and together they renovated a number of houses for veterans.

0:29:140:29:17

But having now become a registered charity,

0:29:170:29:19

along with the local council,

0:29:190:29:21

they've got big plans to create brand-new homes

0:29:210:29:23

on this patch of land for veterans and their families.

0:29:230:29:27

The people of the city of Hull were straight on board.

0:29:270:29:30

We got 16,000 people on our Facebook group within a week, which was phenomenal.

0:29:300:29:35

And then as soon as that happened, we started talking to the council,

0:29:350:29:38

the council straight away backed us.

0:29:380:29:40

It was...

0:29:400:29:42

I went with a big argument, I wanted a big fight and we never got one,

0:29:420:29:45

we just got backed straight away which was absolutely fantastic.

0:29:450:29:48

So the city of Hull, the people of Hull, we can't go wrong.

0:29:480:29:52

Brilliant. And it's that amazing commitment to the cause

0:29:520:29:55

that's driving this build onwards.

0:29:550:29:57

This is really exciting -

0:29:570:29:58

the kitchen's going in.

0:29:580:30:01

I know you think - why is that exciting?

0:30:010:30:04

I'm telling you, it's exciting

0:30:040:30:05

cos I know we've only got four days to go when the kitchen goes in.

0:30:050:30:08

Yeah, I think you need to get out more, Mark.

0:30:080:30:11

And whilst Gabby's design is being realised on site,

0:30:110:30:13

she's gone off to commission some bespoke ceramics,

0:30:130:30:16

enlisting the help of Simon's kids. Kobi, Lilly-Anne, and Damaso.

0:30:160:30:20

They are, after all, designers in the making,

0:30:200:30:24

and they love their dad.

0:30:240:30:25

It's going to be a Batmanbile.

0:30:250:30:27

-A Batmanbile!

-Yes.

0:30:270:30:29

If your daddy was going to be a superhero,

0:30:290:30:31

what kind of superhero would he be?

0:30:310:30:33

He'll be Superman.

0:30:330:30:35

Yeah, I think he's superman.

0:30:350:30:36

Because he's nice and he's kind.

0:30:360:30:40

That's a pretty good reason.

0:30:400:30:42

And is it cos he's brave and strong?

0:30:420:30:44

Yeah. I love my daddy.

0:30:440:30:47

What do you think your new house is going to be like?

0:30:480:30:51

Are you excited about moving house?

0:30:510:30:53

Yeah.

0:30:530:30:54

And it's the best house.

0:30:540:30:57

Would it be nice for you to have a bit more room to play at home?

0:30:580:31:03

-Yeah.

-And do you think...

0:31:030:31:05

Do you have any place to play where you're living at the moment, Kobi?

0:31:050:31:09

-No.

-So you can't play outside?

0:31:090:31:11

No, because when Dad's foot is hurting,

0:31:110:31:16

when I'm at my new house,

0:31:160:31:19

then I can get to play out every day.

0:31:190:31:21

That would be really cool, wouldn't it?

0:31:230:31:26

Isn't it interesting what kids think is important in the new home?

0:31:260:31:30

Back on Canada Street, the gym equipment for Super Dad has arrived.

0:31:300:31:34

It is state-of-the-art stuff, although a little bit hi-tech.

0:31:340:31:38

-What's that?

-Hand bike.

0:31:380:31:41

-It's a hand bike.

-It's outdoor gym equipment.

-Right.

0:31:410:31:44

With a motor and a generator in it which will actually provide power,

0:31:440:31:47

so you can run some lighting from it,

0:31:470:31:49

or you can just plug your phone in and charge your phone while you're exercising,

0:31:490:31:52

so you're not wasting your not wasting the energy.

0:31:520:31:55

-Nice!

-You're putting your own energy to good use.

0:31:550:31:57

Blimey, what's Billy going to make of this?

0:31:570:32:00

I happen to notice there's an electrical cable in there.

0:32:000:32:02

It's amazing. It's the first time we've ever put one of these in, isn't it?

0:32:020:32:05

Apparently they stick them in parks and stuff

0:32:050:32:07

so that people can come up and plug their phone in

0:32:070:32:09

and sit just there pedalling on the thing.

0:32:090:32:11

If your phone runs out whilst you're out, you can go and plug it in and pedal it.

0:32:110:32:14

But if they put them in parks,

0:32:140:32:16

I mean, that must be such a long cable run.

0:32:160:32:19

It must be, mustn't it?

0:32:190:32:20

They're not on battery, are they?

0:32:200:32:22

So, if you put one in a park and we've got to run cable to it, it's got to be a massive cable run.

0:32:220:32:26

You don't run cable to it. You run cable from it.

0:32:260:32:28

-When you...

-Of course it's a dynamo, innit?

0:32:280:32:32

Oh, it's like them old push bikes we used to...

0:32:320:32:34

Oh, I know, I know now.

0:32:340:32:36

LAUGHTER

0:32:360:32:38

And welcome back.

0:32:380:32:40

It's nice of you to catch up finally,

0:32:400:32:41

after we've been talking about this all week.

0:32:410:32:43

You don't run cable to it, you run cable from it, Bill.

0:32:430:32:46

Which then generates electricity for what?

0:32:460:32:49

Low-voltage lights or anything.

0:32:490:32:52

You could charge your phone up on it, couldn't you?

0:32:520:32:55

Oh, I tell you, it's so funny.

0:32:560:32:58

He just keeps you laughing all day, doesn't he? You know that.

0:32:580:33:01

-How does this work, then?

-LAUGHTER

0:33:010:33:03

Did you hear that in the background there - "How does this work, then?"

0:33:050:33:08

18 years this.

0:33:100:33:11

18 years!

0:33:110:33:14

You see this, this is the downstairs loo.

0:33:140:33:16

No more traipsing up and down the stairs for Simon.

0:33:160:33:18

It's rather nice in here.

0:33:180:33:20

Everywhere else is cluttered with loads and loads of stuff

0:33:200:33:22

and yous have got a lovely peaceful little room to be on.

0:33:220:33:25

-And is this the last one, is it?

-Last one, yeah.

-All done now.

0:33:250:33:29

So all the plastering will be done today?

0:33:290:33:30

-All done.

-Thank you very much, gents.

0:33:300:33:33

-Thank you.

-You've done a cracking job.

0:33:330:33:35

And the good work continues upstairs, too.

0:33:350:33:38

So here we are in the fabulous bathroom.

0:33:380:33:41

Amazing cantilevered bench is in,

0:33:410:33:44

and Ollie and the guys are tiling around it.

0:33:440:33:47

And luckily I've chosen some really small tiles for a lot of wall.

0:33:470:33:50

So, Ollie, are you OK down there?

0:33:500:33:52

Yeah, yeah it's all good.

0:33:520:33:54

There's just so much stuff, just in this one room.

0:33:540:33:56

I could be freaking out just about finishing this one room alone,

0:33:560:34:00

but we've got many more rooms to do.

0:34:000:34:03

And many more to freak out in.

0:34:030:34:06

Well, Gabby we did try to warn you,

0:34:060:34:07

but you did want your own way and it usually works out in the end.

0:34:070:34:10

Your brick slips are going on in the kitchen, by the way.

0:34:100:34:12

I still don't think they're a good idea,

0:34:120:34:14

but there you go what can we... Oh, no, what's going on there? That doesn't look good!

0:34:140:34:17

Spud, seriously, what's happening?

0:34:170:34:20

There's been a bit of a mess up.

0:34:200:34:22

HE LAUGHS

0:34:220:34:24

What's happened here is the opening is bang on

0:34:240:34:28

and there's only about 2 or 3ml play in the frame.

0:34:280:34:32

So what we've got to do is we've got to put one side of the frame in so we can swing it round.

0:34:320:34:36

To be able to swing it round like that, you've to cut that wall back, really, really tight.

0:34:360:34:42

It means we've got to do a load of plastering to sort it out tomorrow

0:34:420:34:45

and tomorrow's supposed to be the last day of the build.

0:34:450:34:48

Spud, we'll let you tell Chris about the replastering job.

0:34:480:34:52

Right. We're at this end.

0:34:520:34:53

Just one minute, boys.

0:34:530:34:56

Take the bottom in a bit.

0:34:560:34:57

How many builders does it take to fit a bifold door?

0:34:570:35:01

-It's in!

-CHEERING

0:35:050:35:07

Obviously that many.

0:35:070:35:09

Come on, let's go for the pint.

0:35:090:35:11

We could all do with pint but everyone on site wants to stay and get the job done.

0:35:110:35:17

So, we've still got quite a lot to do and it is dark,

0:35:170:35:20

but we have lights, we have a good attitude

0:35:200:35:22

and we have 24 hours to get this finished.

0:35:220:35:25

I think we're going to do all right on this one.

0:35:250:35:27

It's the last day of the build and I'm waltzing in,

0:35:300:35:33

literally waltzing in.

0:35:330:35:36

Ha-ha!

0:35:360:35:38

Oh, look at the state of that. Chris doesn't look happy.

0:35:380:35:40

-Morning.

-What's going on?

-I think everyone is ahead.

0:35:400:35:44

We are ahead at the moment.

0:35:440:35:45

The garden's ahead of the schedule that we usually are.

0:35:450:35:48

Downstairs is ahead. Decorator's been in.

0:35:480:35:50

I think by this afternoon people will be moving furniture.

0:35:500:35:54

Gabs' cantilevered bench is getting its stone top.

0:35:540:35:57

That looks lovely, doesn't it?

0:35:570:35:59

And with toilets being installed both upstairs and downstairs,

0:35:590:36:02

life should be a lot easier for Simon in this house,

0:36:020:36:04

especially in the kitchen, where he spends most of his time

0:36:040:36:07

and we're putting in some pretty special things.

0:36:070:36:09

So these guys are actually putting in what we're calling a rising hob,

0:36:090:36:13

which is an interesting thing, so that you can sit down and cook,

0:36:130:36:15

for people, obviously, with wheelchairs,

0:36:150:36:17

but people, obviously, like Simon, who has a leg injury.

0:36:170:36:20

It's sore for him to stand up for any length of time

0:36:200:36:22

and if he spends a lot of time cooking, which he likes to do, sitting will be better.

0:36:220:36:26

So we have a rising hob,

0:36:260:36:27

which is going to go up and down on these things here.

0:36:270:36:30

They're fairly complicated.

0:36:300:36:32

They're great when they work,

0:36:320:36:34

and we're hoping that that will be the case by the end of today.

0:36:340:36:37

-Yes, no?

-Definitely.

0:36:370:36:39

Great, a positive mental attitude.

0:36:390:36:41

So at this point I need to ask you what exactly are you up to?

0:36:410:36:46

Well, we're testing it, aren't we, Richard?

0:36:460:36:48

Have you built this off site?

0:36:480:36:50

Yeah, we've been in Leeds, building this one.

0:36:500:36:52

And what do you make of the whole project?

0:36:520:36:54

I think it's amazing, what they've done, what we've all done.

0:36:540:36:57

My grandad served way back in the Royal Engineers,

0:36:570:37:01

and I think he'd be really proud of what's going on now, so...

0:37:010:37:04

I think he'd be really proud you for the work you're doing as well.

0:37:040:37:08

He passed in August, so just gone now

0:37:080:37:12

and I think if he was still here now and could see at all, he'd love it.

0:37:120:37:17

I think he'd be very proud of you.

0:37:170:37:18

-Beautiful work, by the way.

-Thank you.

0:37:180:37:20

-And thank you very much, I really appreciate it, thank you.

-Yeah, no problem.

0:37:200:37:23

By giving Simon a bedroom to himself,

0:37:230:37:25

he should be able to get a decent night's sleep,

0:37:250:37:28

possibly for the first time in years.

0:37:280:37:30

Not much to ask for an injured hero.

0:37:300:37:33

-Did you like soldiering?

-I loved it. Yeah, I did.

0:37:330:37:36

You get to make new mates from different parts of the UK

0:37:360:37:39

and just have a real good bond.

0:37:390:37:41

How difficult is it, then, to find yourself removed from all that

0:37:410:37:44

and back in Civvy Street and trying to find a place?

0:37:440:37:47

It is hard.

0:37:490:37:51

You know, I've said before, you know, not many...

0:37:510:37:56

No civvy understands what we've been through, what we've seen.

0:37:560:38:00

For us, you know, to come out of a job where we're working 24/7,

0:38:000:38:04

to come out of all that and try and get your head around it,

0:38:040:38:08

you know, it really is hard.

0:38:080:38:10

You know, I'd always have to keep myself busy, because...

0:38:100:38:14

it would be like a constant just...

0:38:140:38:17

You'd just end up being lazy and that's not a British soldier.

0:38:170:38:21

British soldiers ain't lazy.

0:38:210:38:22

So what does the future hold? What are you going to do with yourself?

0:38:220:38:25

I do want to have a career in personal fitness

0:38:250:38:27

and help other people with physical disabilities.

0:38:270:38:30

So if we could set up something like, I don't know,

0:38:300:38:32

to help you with your physical training, that would be handy.

0:38:320:38:35

Yeah, I'd like to...

0:38:350:38:37

You know, cos I don't see many people with physical disabilities in gyms these days, you know.

0:38:370:38:43

And that's something that's missing,

0:38:430:38:44

because, you know, just because they've got a physical disability

0:38:440:38:47

doesn't mean that they can't do it.

0:38:470:38:49

Exactly right. I mean, we've seen that from the Paralympics, haven't we?

0:38:490:38:52

So instead of sitting down, you know, come and find me,

0:38:520:38:55

and I'd be more than happy to help you train, yeah.

0:38:550:38:58

I might be a bit strict about it, but at least it gets it done.

0:38:580:39:01

You're going to beast people, aren't you?

0:39:010:39:03

-THEY LAUGH

-Yeah.

0:39:030:39:05

You seem to be jolly, easy-going about things and not much of one for feeling sorry for yourself.

0:39:050:39:10

No, not really. Well, I do, but I keep it all to myself.

0:39:100:39:14

But when we walked out of the house the other day and met all the guys waiting to get started on the house,

0:39:140:39:18

-that was actually very emotional for you.

-It just caught me, you know.

-Why?

0:39:180:39:21

Because it's people taking time out of their normal day lives

0:39:230:39:26

to earn money for themselves for their families,

0:39:260:39:29

and helping somebody they've never known, never known before,

0:39:290:39:33

and, you know, they're helping them build a home.

0:39:330:39:36

You know, and to me, that's just...

0:39:360:39:38

If the world had more people like them,

0:39:400:39:43

I think it would be a better place.

0:39:430:39:44

-What's the most important thing in your world?

-My kids.

0:39:440:39:47

I'd do anything for them, you know, I make sure they get the best.

0:39:470:39:51

They give me a reason to wake up of a morning.

0:39:510:39:53

They give me a smile when I go to bed,

0:39:530:39:56

especially when I've got Damaso beside me all the time.

0:39:560:39:58

You know, they...

0:40:000:40:01

They make my life complete.

0:40:030:40:05

Well, let's hope that we can actually give you a house which will make it that little bit easier

0:40:070:40:11

to go forward and develop those relationships,

0:40:110:40:13

-because that's what you're doing, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:40:130:40:16

-You're making memories for the kids now.

-Yeah, it's all about the kids.

0:40:160:40:18

Back on site it's all hands on deck as we get the house finished

0:40:180:40:22

and ready to hand over to Simon and his kids tomorrow morning.

0:40:220:40:25

I tell you what, look how bright that is!

0:40:260:40:29

-The lights are on...

-Look what he's done.

0:40:290:40:32

..but no-one's home.

0:40:320:40:34

I've tightened it up cos it was too easy for me.

0:40:340:40:37

I'm absolutely knackered.

0:40:370:40:40

I'm not surprised, you've been working with Billy all week.

0:40:400:40:43

Simon Flores joined the Army at 21

0:40:450:40:47

because he wanted to make a difference.

0:40:470:40:49

But during a tour of Iraq, a roadside bomb took away his foot.

0:40:490:40:54

I had my foot in my hand.

0:40:540:40:56

They literally blew my foot off.

0:40:560:40:58

But Simon is not a man to be afraid of what would get most of us down.

0:40:580:41:02

He rebuilt his life and became Dad to three gorgeous kids.

0:41:020:41:06

-Who wants to take daddy's leg off?

-Me.

-Me.

0:41:060:41:08

Yeah, we'll have a look at it, see if it's sore.

0:41:080:41:10

OK, go on, then.

0:41:100:41:11

But he's found working difficult because of his devastating injury.

0:41:110:41:15

Oh, look at that red.

0:41:150:41:17

-Aww.

-It's sore, isn't it?

0:41:170:41:19

And the house he shared with his children was small,

0:41:190:41:22

un-homely and difficult for him to use as an amputee.

0:41:220:41:25

I do find it difficult, you know, to walk up and down the stairs.

0:41:250:41:28

I would love to have a downstairs loo.

0:41:300:41:32

Thanks to our amazing volunteers, we've turned this empty shell

0:41:320:41:36

into a family home fit for a hero.

0:41:360:41:39

The living room has been transformed.

0:41:400:41:42

What was bricks and mortar is now a warm, inviting escape for Simon,

0:41:420:41:45

somewhere he can relax after looking after the kids all day.

0:41:450:41:49

It was hard to imagine what the kitchen would look like ten days ago,

0:41:500:41:54

but now it's a cooks' paradise for Dad.

0:41:540:41:56

He'll love the hob that goes up and down

0:41:560:41:58

to take the weight off his feet.

0:41:580:42:01

And, yes, Gabs was right, even the brick slips on the wall look great.

0:42:010:42:05

Before the garden was a blank canvas,

0:42:050:42:07

but now it's a multi-zone area for rest and play,

0:42:070:42:11

and somewhere that Simon can work out and start a new career.

0:42:110:42:15

Upstairs, the boys get to share a room perfect for little explorers.

0:42:160:42:21

Lilly-Anne's room is a starlit haven away from the chaos of the boys.

0:42:210:42:25

And Dad finally gets a room of his own,

0:42:250:42:28

complete with a beautiful bespoke four-poster bed.

0:42:280:42:32

And simple design features in the bathroom

0:42:320:42:34

mean that finally Simon can bathe as easily as anyone else.

0:42:340:42:39

Ready?

0:42:410:42:42

Open your eyes.

0:42:430:42:45

Whoa.

0:42:470:42:48

Wow.

0:42:490:42:50

Whoa.

0:42:570:42:58

This is... Look at it, it's beautiful.

0:43:000:43:02

It's all about family time. This is the area, the relaxing area, the family place.

0:43:040:43:07

Wow, it's brilliant. Wow, thank you.

0:43:090:43:11

Oh, man. Look at it!

0:43:130:43:15

This is just... This is amazing.

0:43:160:43:18

Come through and have a look around.

0:43:180:43:20

This is your new family living room.

0:43:200:43:22

Oh.

0:43:220:43:23

Storage, plenty of places to sit,

0:43:230:43:25

nice big chair for you to take the weight off.

0:43:250:43:27

And actually as we go around the house,

0:43:270:43:29

you'll see a lot more of this - somewhere to take the weight off.

0:43:290:43:31

-The other really important thing, though, for you is cooking, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:43:310:43:35

SIMON LAUGHS

0:43:400:43:42

Wow!

0:43:430:43:45

It's like... Wow! This is... Yes, man!

0:43:520:43:55

This is brilliant!

0:43:550:43:57

-Copper-top table.

-Oh.

0:43:570:43:59

Captain's chair at the end and it's got wheels on it,

0:43:590:44:02

so if you're cooking and you want to stand that's fine,

0:44:020:44:05

but I know with your leg and the prosthetic,

0:44:050:44:06

-every now and then it gets too much.

-Yeah.

0:44:060:44:08

What you can do is go over there... Come here, you're going to love this. Come over here.

0:44:080:44:12

So what you do is you take...

0:44:120:44:14

-..the cooker down.

-Look at that!

0:44:150:44:17

But if you want to do it standing...

0:44:170:44:18

..you take the cooker up.

0:44:200:44:22

-No way!

-Yeah.

-That is ama...

0:44:220:44:25

Wow, I've never seen anything like that before!

0:44:250:44:27

So, basically, when you get tired of standing up,

0:44:270:44:30

you can actually do your cooking sitting down.

0:44:300:44:32

This is more than what I expected.

0:44:320:44:35

This is... Oh, again, come here.

0:44:350:44:39

This is amazing!

0:44:390:44:40

It's absolutely brilliant.

0:44:400:44:42

It is kind of beautiful, isn't it?

0:44:420:44:44

This is the type of home I've always wanted,

0:44:440:44:47

and for yous to do this for me is...

0:44:470:44:49

You know, you've made my dream come true.

0:44:510:44:54

And I can't wait to see the kids again, we're going to love this.

0:44:540:44:58

Thank you very much.

0:45:000:45:01

Oh, mate, it's not me, it's the huge number of people

0:45:010:45:04

who've turned up from all over the country

0:45:040:45:06

to do this and build the whole road,

0:45:060:45:08

and you're the last piece in the jigsaw as far as they're concerned,

0:45:080:45:11

to actually make this community come together.

0:45:110:45:14

But that only works if your family works.

0:45:140:45:16

So you just needed a space where you can make that happen,

0:45:160:45:19

where you're not climbing all over each other.

0:45:190:45:21

So that's what the guys here wanted to give you,

0:45:230:45:25

they didn't do it for a thank you, they did it so you could

0:45:250:45:29

start to go back in the direction you needed to go.

0:45:290:45:31

-Yeah.

-Build that family time.

0:45:310:45:34

We're going to be... We'll be a happier family now.

0:45:340:45:37

We've got all this to enjoy together and, um...

0:45:370:45:42

There's another room over there, I'll just show you that.

0:45:420:45:45

Let's go, let's go and have a look at the rooms.

0:45:450:45:48

Downstairs loo, really important.

0:45:490:45:51

Yes, when I take my leg off sometimes and it's...

0:45:510:45:54

You know, having to put it on and go up the stairs,

0:45:540:45:56

you know, a downstairs loo is essential.

0:45:560:45:59

Yeah.

0:45:590:46:00

You've only seen half of it, do you want to have a look upstairs?

0:46:020:46:05

-Wow!

-SIMON LAUGHS

0:46:080:46:10

This is brilliant.

0:46:100:46:11

I wanted a room like this when I was growing up.

0:46:110:46:14

Wow.

0:46:150:46:17

I might actually come and stay in this room instead of the kids.

0:46:180:46:21

They can go into mine.

0:46:210:46:23

Well, wait till you've seen yours before you make that decision.

0:46:230:46:26

-I can't wait.

-Happy with it?

0:46:260:46:27

I can't wait to see their faces, they're going to love it so much.

0:46:270:46:30

So that's the boys done. Who else do we need to look after?

0:46:300:46:32

Lilly-Anne.

0:46:320:46:34

Right, let's go and have a look, come on.

0:46:340:46:36

This is Lilly's room.

0:46:370:46:38

-Oh, my God!

-SIMON LAUGHS

0:46:380:46:41

Oh, wow!

0:46:430:46:44

Bless, she's going to love it!

0:46:440:46:46

Oh, look at the bed.

0:46:470:46:49

-Yeah.

-It's all tucked away.

0:46:490:46:51

Oh, may I?

0:46:510:46:53

Yeah.

0:46:530:46:54

You don't have to keep asking me permission

0:46:540:46:56

to sit down on places, it's yours.

0:46:560:46:58

It's just force of habit, force.

0:46:580:47:01

Oh, she's going to absolutely love this.

0:47:010:47:04

Come here, thank you very much.

0:47:060:47:08

Wow. She's going to... As long...

0:47:110:47:15

It's mainly for the kids, you know?

0:47:150:47:16

I want to see them happy

0:47:160:47:18

and be able to come and bring their friends to stay over, sleepovers.

0:47:180:47:24

Even though it will kill me having sleepovers -

0:47:240:47:26

that many children -

0:47:260:47:28

they can finally have a home to be proud of,

0:47:280:47:31

to say, "Come to mine, come and have dinner at mine."

0:47:310:47:34

And that's all I want,

0:47:350:47:37

for my children to be happy and to enjoy their home.

0:47:370:47:41

But it's not just about the children.

0:47:410:47:44

Your room.

0:47:440:47:45

SIMON LAUGHS

0:47:470:47:49

Oh, wow.

0:47:510:47:52

This is beautiful, Nick, this is really beautiful.

0:47:540:47:57

Still want to swap with the boys?

0:47:570:47:59

No. They can have their room now.

0:47:590:48:01

SIMON LAUGHS

0:48:010:48:03

The idea of the four-poster is not just because it's a four-poster,

0:48:030:48:06

it means that when you come in the room,

0:48:060:48:08

should you not have the leg or whatever,

0:48:080:48:11

or when you take the leg off,

0:48:110:48:13

you've got something to hold on to, so you sit down.

0:48:130:48:15

And the same thing in the morning, when you get up in the morning,

0:48:150:48:18

you can actually swing yourself round

0:48:180:48:19

and you've got something to hold on to, to get yourself up.

0:48:190:48:23

Tried to think of everything every way around

0:48:230:48:24

to make sure that you've got seating opportunities everywhere.

0:48:240:48:28

The plan is that whenever you feel that you need to,

0:48:280:48:30

without having to make a big deal of it - "I'm sorry, kids, I can't do this,

0:48:300:48:33

"I can't go in there, just leave me, I'll stay here."

0:48:330:48:35

There's always something there for a bit of aid.

0:48:350:48:37

Always somewhere where you can sit down and take the weight off.

0:48:370:48:39

And nowhere more than in the bathroom,

0:48:390:48:41

with Gabby's cantilevered bench.

0:48:410:48:43

-This is a little bit important, isn't it?

-This is cool. I like this.

0:48:480:48:51

I like this. And look at the size of the bathtub.

0:48:510:48:54

When you actually bath the kids,

0:48:540:48:55

what we've done is we've brought a bench in,

0:48:550:48:57

so that you can pull a bench over and you can sit with them

0:48:570:49:00

-so you're not having to stand.

-Oh, yes.

0:49:000:49:01

You can sit with them comfortably, not having to stand on that leg,

0:49:010:49:04

that painful leg all the time,

0:49:040:49:06

difficult for you to sit down on the floor with it.

0:49:060:49:08

But you can actually come here and sit next to them and be with them,

0:49:080:49:10

put this next to the bath.

0:49:100:49:12

The other thing important for us was for you, for when you shower,

0:49:120:49:15

-cos, of course, when you shower, you actually have to take the prosthetic off.

-Yeah.

0:49:150:49:18

-And then you're on a slippery surface...

-Yeah, that's right.

-..on the one foot.

0:49:180:49:21

What you do is - go and sit over in the corner.

0:49:210:49:25

So you sit down, take the prosthetic leg off.

0:49:250:49:29

-And slide along.

-Slide yourself along.

0:49:290:49:31

Stand if you want to, shower, you've got somewhere to sit,

0:49:310:49:33

slide yourself back over, dry in the dry area...

0:49:330:49:36

-This is...

-..leg back on.

0:49:360:49:38

Nick, this is amazing.

0:49:380:49:40

-The handles there as well.

-Yeah.

-In case.

0:49:400:49:42

That's right, handle to help you there.

0:49:440:49:46

And push away.

0:49:460:49:47

-The towel rail is actually a grab handle as well.

-OK.

0:49:470:49:50

It's made solid so you can stand up and get there.

0:49:500:49:52

And the same, you've got one over by the bath

0:49:520:49:54

so that if you're leaning over with the kids

0:49:540:49:55

and you start to feel unbalanced you can go for that one as well.

0:49:550:49:58

They've all been built solidly into the wall so they won't come off,

0:49:580:50:01

you can use them as handrails.

0:50:010:50:03

When I use the shower, it made me feel...

0:50:030:50:05

..incapable.

0:50:080:50:10

You know, and so just to have this, you know,

0:50:100:50:14

I can still feel capable and just getting in the shower,

0:50:140:50:17

and even not that far from the bath either.

0:50:170:50:19

But it's in the garden where we've given Simon the tools

0:50:200:50:23

to push his capabilities even further.

0:50:230:50:26

Wow!

0:50:270:50:29

You realised you said that a lot when you walked into rooms.

0:50:320:50:35

-NICK LAUGHS

-Because I'm...

0:50:350:50:37

I'm...

0:50:380:50:40

..breath taken.

0:50:400:50:42

Cos I remember what this looked like.

0:50:420:50:44

-When you came out here and met the builders.

-Yeah.

0:50:440:50:47

-SIMON LAUGHS

-This is amazing!

0:50:470:50:51

Absolutely amazing.

0:50:510:50:52

-Plainly fitness was the key.

-Yeah.

0:50:520:50:54

We wanted a garden where you could be active, the kids could be active.

0:50:540:50:57

Sorry to interrupt, what's that?

0:50:570:51:00

Ah, very good point. Do you want to go and have a look? Have a wander over there.

0:51:000:51:03

Oh, right!

0:51:030:51:04

I know, it's like a cycling machine but with your arms.

0:51:040:51:07

Very good. Sit yourself down.

0:51:070:51:09

-Didn't, um...

-See how many watts you can power up.

0:51:090:51:12

I'm in a blazer here.

0:51:120:51:15

OK.

0:51:150:51:16

-Oh, no way!

-SIMON LAUGHS

0:51:180:51:21

That's so cool.

0:51:210:51:23

Oh, wow, that's brilliant!

0:51:260:51:28

Monkey bars on the other side there, basically you can run fitness classes here.

0:51:280:51:31

-Yeah, I can, from home.

-Mm.

0:51:310:51:33

I'm literally... I am literally lost for words now.

0:51:370:51:39

Look what yous have done to this place.

0:51:390:51:42

You've made it a home, made a home for me and my children.

0:51:420:51:46

Right. Shall we show the family?

0:51:460:51:48

Let's do that, let's see their faces.

0:51:480:51:50

Open.

0:51:530:51:55

KOBI GASPS

0:51:550:51:57

My bed!

0:51:570:51:59

-What did you do with my bed?

-Which one's yours?

0:51:590:52:01

-Which one do you want?

-I think I want...

0:52:010:52:05

-KOBI GASPS

-My new car!

0:52:050:52:06

That's brilliant. What do you think of your room?

0:52:060:52:09

-Choo-choo!

-I like all that and I like Dam's bed.

0:52:090:52:12

-Like it, Dam-Dam?

-Yeah!

0:52:120:52:14

-This is your room!

-SHE LAUGHS

0:52:160:52:18

SIMON LAUGHS

0:52:180:52:20

-And that frilly dress.

-Frilly, yes. A tutu.

0:52:200:52:24

Look at where your bed is.

0:52:240:52:25

-Do you like it?

-Yeah!

0:52:250:52:27

Want to lie in it? Jump in it!

0:52:270:52:29

-Isn't that cool?

-Yeah!

0:52:310:52:33

Come here, give me a cuddle.

0:52:330:52:35

-Thanks, Dad!

-It wasn't me.

0:52:350:52:38

We've got to thank the people later.

0:52:380:52:40

-Yeah!

-Yeah.

-Ready?

0:52:400:52:42

-He's gone.

-Go.

-Go, go, go.

-Look at him.

0:52:420:52:44

-Look at him!

-Go, go, go!

0:52:440:52:47

-Kick!

-Wow.

0:52:470:52:48

One hand.

0:52:500:52:52

Go.

0:52:520:52:53

What do you reckon?

0:52:540:52:56

I can't, I can't describe how happy I am.

0:52:560:52:59

I'm actually almost tearful, I've got a big lump in my throat.

0:52:590:53:02

It's a great fresh start for him, a great new life.

0:53:020:53:06

I think the children are going to be so happy here as well,

0:53:060:53:09

and there's so many great kids on the street,

0:53:090:53:11

I think it's just wow.

0:53:110:53:13

-You know what we're going to do now?

-What?

0:53:130:53:15

We're going to thank the people

0:53:150:53:17

for making this house possible for us, for us to live in,

0:53:170:53:20

and then I'm going to let you run wild on them

0:53:200:53:23

and give them big hugs and kisses and say thank you, yeah?

0:53:230:53:26

-Yeah!

-Cool. Let's go then.

-Let's go. Come on.

0:53:260:53:29

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:53:330:53:36

Look at all these people.

0:53:470:53:50

I'd like to say, you know, on behalf of me and my children,

0:53:500:53:54

you've turned this house into a dream house for me and my kids.

0:53:540:53:58

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

0:53:580:54:01

Yous don't know me and I don't know you.

0:54:010:54:04

For yous to volunteer and do all this

0:54:040:54:07

for me and my children is amazing.

0:54:070:54:09

Um, I never...

0:54:090:54:11

I never thought that there was that many people out there

0:54:130:54:16

who was willing to do stuff

0:54:160:54:17

for people like myself and other veterans.

0:54:170:54:20

Thank you very much. I love you.

0:54:200:54:21

APPLAUSE

0:54:210:54:24

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:54:250:54:28

Thank you, Dave. Thank you!

0:54:280:54:30

OK, John, a year ago you were walking out the front of your house

0:54:320:54:35

and talking to people in the same way,

0:54:350:54:37

and as you were stood here, I saw you getting emotional.

0:54:370:54:40

Is it cos it was bringing back memories,

0:54:400:54:41

-or you knew what he was going to do or...?

-Yeah, I just, oh...

0:54:410:54:46

I'm proper struggling.

0:54:460:54:48

But, no, it's just like...

0:54:480:54:50

Knowing everything that Simon's going through today,

0:54:500:54:52

I felt really, really happy for him.

0:54:520:54:55

It helped change my life around

0:54:550:54:58

and now it's going to change his life around.

0:54:580:55:00

He can build this community.

0:55:000:55:02

-Is it working, the street?

-Yeah, yeah, definitely.

0:55:020:55:05

My door is open for you any time, kids,

0:55:050:55:07

you want to go and mess around, just bring them to us.

0:55:070:55:09

I'll send them your way as soon as I can.

0:55:090:55:11

LAUGHTER

0:55:110:55:12

Last year the people that were here, you know that it was hard,

0:55:120:55:15

it was really, really tough what we took on last year,

0:55:150:55:18

but everybody that I've spoken to this week

0:55:180:55:21

is telling us that it's working, and not only that,

0:55:210:55:23

but it's actually branching out across the country.

0:55:230:55:26

Help For Heroes are helping here, they're doing amazing things

0:55:260:55:28

and we know that other parts of the country are doing it

0:55:280:55:30

and other parts of the country are looking at it.

0:55:300:55:33

And by coming in and joining in, not only have you built the homes in the street,

0:55:330:55:36

you've built awareness for people around the country,

0:55:360:55:38

so they have a better idea of what's going on.

0:55:380:55:40

You've done that yourselves. It's actually all of you that have made that happen.

0:55:400:55:43

This week, rather than it being a tough build like it very often is,

0:55:430:55:47

this week has felt like a celebration, hasn't it?

0:55:470:55:49

It's felt like people, friends, coming back together and really having an amazing time.

0:55:490:55:53

We're really, really proud to work with you, so thank you very much.

0:55:530:55:56

This is Lilly, this is Damaso, and this is Kobi.

0:56:030:56:06

Hello, you all right, sweethearts?

0:56:060:56:08

Our veterans don't want charity, what they want an opportunity.

0:56:100:56:13

A year ago, we set out on a project to build not just homes,

0:56:130:56:16

not even a whole street, it was actually to build a community,

0:56:160:56:20

and it's here and it's working, and how do I know it is?

0:56:200:56:23

Because I see people with two cups of teas, going knocking on the door,

0:56:230:56:26

having a brew in the street, seeing the kids riding around on bicycles, kicking a football around.

0:56:260:56:30

This is how it was 100 years ago.

0:56:300:56:31

These people did that.

0:56:310:56:33

You know, I've said it before and I'll say it again.

0:56:330:56:36

You can't help everybody, but everybody can help someone.

0:56:360:56:41

Isn't it fantastic?
