This charming village behind me may be full of life today,

0:00:020:00:04

but a poignant story

0:00:040:00:06

of self-sacrifice is written into its history.

0:00:060:00:09

Find out exactly what happened and where I am in just a moment.

0:00:090:00:12

On today's show, I help a couple

0:00:320:00:34

looking for a rural escape somewhere with

0:00:340:00:36

a strong village community.

0:00:360:00:38

But it seems that size is going to be a struggle.

0:00:380:00:41

Interesting, to say the least.

0:00:410:00:43

-Yeah.

-Looks a bit small on the front.

0:00:430:00:46

But it's fortunate some houses in our line-up do measure up.

0:00:460:00:49

Oh, this is big.

0:00:490:00:51

-This is big.

-This is much...

0:00:510:00:52

I thought it would be low roofs.

0:00:520:00:54

Wow, that's fantastic.

0:00:540:00:55

Today, I'm in Derbyshire, and this is the village of Eyam,

0:00:570:01:01

where in 1665, a cloth-bound package infected with the bubonic plague

0:01:010:01:06

arrived from London.

0:01:060:01:08

Once the disease had started to claim the lives of the villagers,

0:01:080:01:12

the entire community made an extraordinary decision,

0:01:120:01:15

to quarantine themselves to stop the disease from spreading.

0:01:150:01:19

Around 260 people lost their lives as a result,

0:01:190:01:23

affecting over 70 families.

0:01:230:01:26

Today, Eyam still remembers the courage of its ancestors

0:01:260:01:30

and the industries that contributed to the revival

0:01:300:01:33

of this beautiful village.

0:01:330:01:35

Derbyshire is located at the heart

0:01:370:01:39

of Britain and shares its borders with seven other counties,

0:01:390:01:43

with Nottinghamshire to the east and Staffordshire to the west.

0:01:430:01:46

A county of striking and varied landscapes,

0:01:480:01:51

its windswept moors give way to

0:01:510:01:53

exposed limestone dales, where miles

0:01:530:01:55

of dry-stone walls snake through lush fields and wooded valleys.

0:01:550:01:58

And the crowning glory is

0:02:000:02:01

undoubtedly the Peak District National Park,

0:02:010:02:04

which lies predominantly in Derbyshire.

0:02:040:02:06

Ancient towns like Ashbourne provide gateways to the region,

0:02:070:02:11

attracting house-hunters and visitors alike,

0:02:110:02:13

who come to admire its many Georgian buildings,

0:02:130:02:16

historic almshouses and the main attraction,

0:02:160:02:19

the 14th-century St Oswald's Parish Church, featuring a 212-foot spire.

0:02:190:02:24

The region is also peppered with picturesque villages, like Thorpe,

0:02:250:02:29

home to a stout Norman church dating back to the 12th century,

0:02:290:02:33

and pretty residential properties made from stone.

0:02:330:02:35

When it comes to industry,

0:02:360:02:37

look no further than the World Heritage Site

0:02:370:02:40

of the Derwent Valley Mills.

0:02:400:02:42

Home to Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mill,

0:02:420:02:45

a cotton factory which became famous in 1769, when Arkwright

0:02:450:02:48

successfully harnessed the power of the river to run it.

0:02:480:02:53

Today, his legacy lives on,

0:02:530:02:55

as the mill houses one of the

0:02:550:02:56

finest collections of working textile machines

0:02:560:02:58

in the UK, now open to the public.

0:02:580:03:01

So, with industrial history, architecture, and wonderful scenery,

0:03:030:03:07

it's no wonder Derbyshire remains popular with those looking for their

0:03:070:03:11

ideal rural home.

0:03:110:03:12

Derbyshire can be great value for money

0:03:140:03:18

with the average detached house price coming in at an impressive

0:03:180:03:21

26% below the national figure.

0:03:210:03:24

Having said that,

0:03:240:03:25

proximity to the Peak District can

0:03:250:03:27

inflate prices in historic market towns

0:03:270:03:30

such as Bakewell and Ashbourne, with their very attractive housing stock.

0:03:300:03:34

However, further from the National Park,

0:03:340:03:38

Wirksworth is a fine example of a town

0:03:380:03:39

where you'll get that little bit more for your money.

0:03:390:03:42

Mindful of this, let's meet today's

0:03:440:03:46

buyers and find out what has attracted to them to this county.

0:03:460:03:49

Research scientist David and his wife Sarah,

0:03:490:03:52

an occupational therapist, currently live in Dartford in Kent.

0:03:520:03:56

Their first encounter was some three

0:03:560:03:59

decades ago in the Cumbrian countryside.

0:03:590:04:01

We first met in the Lake District

0:04:010:04:04

in a church up there I had been going to for several years.

0:04:040:04:09

I went along to this church one Sunday morning

0:04:090:04:11

and we were introduced.

0:04:110:04:12

We didn't fall in love at first sight

0:04:120:04:14

but gradually over the years we did.

0:04:140:04:16

We've been together for 29 years.

0:04:160:04:20

A long time but,

0:04:200:04:21

a great time.

0:04:210:04:23

Together they have three children

0:04:230:04:25

who are now grown up and the youngest is

0:04:250:04:27

about to leave for university.

0:04:270:04:29

After years of moving around for David's work,

0:04:290:04:32

they've decided the time is right

0:04:320:04:33

for both of them to take early retirement,

0:04:330:04:36

leave their busy local area

0:04:360:04:37

and head back to somewhere more peaceful again.

0:04:370:04:41

It's a lot sort of busier and

0:04:410:04:44

sort of faster, life down here.

0:04:440:04:46

Probably time for looking for a change

0:04:460:04:48

and something a little bit quieter.

0:04:480:04:50

Well, we're thinking of moving to Derbyshire

0:04:500:04:52

which is sort of central to the country.

0:04:520:04:54

And it's a beautiful area.

0:04:540:04:55

And then it will have the Peak District on the sort of doorstep,

0:04:550:04:59

which is a place we haven't really explored before.

0:04:590:05:02

-No.

-We like the outdoors and we want to go and explore it.

0:05:020:05:06

Alongside a busy job, David is also a churchwarden.

0:05:080:05:12

They both attend regularly,

0:05:120:05:13

so a local church and a new community will be

0:05:130:05:16

important considerations for their next move.

0:05:160:05:19

As will a space for their hobbies.

0:05:190:05:21

Sarah would like more time to enjoy

0:05:210:05:23

cooking and knitting, whilst David would like somewhere

0:05:230:05:26

to continue his hobby of model-making.

0:05:260:05:29

I've got marquetry,

0:05:290:05:31

sort of making pictures out of wood veneers,

0:05:310:05:35

and also model-making with wood as well.

0:05:350:05:38

Moving will mean leaving their four-bedroom chalet bungalow,

0:05:390:05:43

where they've lived for 16 years.

0:05:430:05:45

But whilst it has served them well, the plot no longer suits Sarah.

0:05:450:05:49

We've a lovely garden, about one third of an acre

0:05:490:05:51

on different levels,

0:05:510:05:53

which is becoming more difficult for me

0:05:530:05:55

because I have arthritis in one of my hips,

0:05:550:05:57

and David's having to do all the gardening really now.

0:05:570:06:00

Working as well as doing all the garden is quite a lot for him to do.

0:06:010:06:04

Saying goodbye to the family home

0:06:060:06:08

will be an emotional upheaval but

0:06:080:06:10

the benefits of more free time and a

0:06:100:06:12

brand-new location will far outweigh this.

0:06:120:06:15

I think I'm excited that we will be doing something together.

0:06:150:06:18

We haven't done that for a very long time.

0:06:180:06:21

-Yeah.

-I'm excited about that.

0:06:210:06:22

Now is the time for ourselves to enjoy

0:06:220:06:25

and having that time together to do whatever we want.

0:06:250:06:28

For David and Sarah's move to Derbyshire,

0:06:330:06:36

they're hoping to find a country home

0:06:360:06:37

somewhere between the towns of Derby and Bakewell.

0:06:370:06:40

So we are concentrating the search in this area.

0:06:400:06:43

And I'm meeting up with them in the county to find out more about their

0:06:430:06:47

property wish list.

0:06:470:06:48

Well, Sarah and David, welcome to Derbyshire.

0:06:480:06:51

-BOTH:

-Thank you.

-With three grown-up

0:06:510:06:54

-children that have left home...

-They have.

0:06:540:06:56

..this is the next chapter, isn't it?

0:06:560:06:58

It's just about the two of you, for most of the time.

0:06:580:07:00

The house really that we're in at the moment

0:07:000:07:02

is too big now that it's just the two of us.

0:07:020:07:04

So talk us through what you'd like for your next property.

0:07:040:07:07

Well, I think we'd like a detached house.

0:07:070:07:10

Ideally at least three bedrooms so

0:07:100:07:12

when the family come, they can come and stay.

0:07:120:07:15

Flat garden so that Sarah can do more gardening

0:07:150:07:18

and not be bothered too much about her hip.

0:07:180:07:21

We do know, don't we, that Derbyshire is very hilly.

0:07:210:07:23

It is, but as long as the house itself is on the flat.

0:07:230:07:26

-I think that's the important thing.

-OK.

-We'd love a social kitchen.

0:07:260:07:29

For the moment we've got a kitchen and other people have to sit in a

0:07:290:07:32

different room. Can't really talk to them while you're cooking.

0:07:320:07:35

So we'd love a social kitchen when the family are home.

0:07:350:07:37

We do own a caravan and it would be

0:07:370:07:39

lovely to have room on the property to keep it.

0:07:390:07:42

Or perhaps be able to store it but nearer.

0:07:420:07:45

So you're both pretty flexible when

0:07:450:07:47

it comes to location, but I'm guessing

0:07:470:07:49

you want to be close to a community, the edge of a village.

0:07:490:07:52

Church is very important to us so to be able to be a member of a local

0:07:520:07:56

church involved in the community is...

0:07:560:07:57

-That would be great...

-It would be great for us.

0:07:570:08:00

It does sound wonderful.

0:08:000:08:01

Let's remind ourselves of how much you've got to spend with this

0:08:010:08:04

-move to Derbyshire.

-Right, we've got £380,000.

0:08:040:08:06

Well, we do have some splendid properties to show you.

0:08:060:08:10

You don't know the county very well so I think it's going to be an

0:08:100:08:13

interesting few days but an exciting one.

0:08:130:08:16

Good budget. Let's see how we get on. Let's go.

0:08:160:08:19

With a budget of £380,000,

0:08:210:08:24

David and Sarah are looking for a detached home with three bedrooms.

0:08:240:08:28

They'd like a large kitchen diner as

0:08:280:08:30

the hub of the house and an even accessible garden.

0:08:300:08:33

A place to park their caravan close by will be important to them,

0:08:330:08:37

as will a strong village community

0:08:370:08:39

and a local church.

0:08:390:08:42

We found three fantastic properties for them to look at and at each one,

0:08:420:08:46

I'll be asking them to guess the price at the end of the tour.

0:08:460:08:49

Our final stop to the Mystery House

0:08:490:08:51

will certainly give them a new outlook to consider.

0:08:510:08:55

So taking this lovely early retirement,

0:08:580:09:00

it does give you so many options, doesn't it?

0:09:000:09:04

It does, yeah.

0:09:040:09:05

One of the things I want to do is to

0:09:050:09:07

sort of look at doing something voluntary.

0:09:070:09:09

Cos it's important for our faith to do things for other people.

0:09:090:09:12

To be able to give back something is important for us.

0:09:120:09:16

I think this will be a very

0:09:160:09:17

different way of life, perhaps slower.

0:09:170:09:20

But doing more things together.

0:09:210:09:23

We're starting off our tour within their search area in a small village

0:09:270:09:31

called Fritchley.

0:09:310:09:32

Set within lush and endless scenery,

0:09:330:09:35

Crich is the nearest town to

0:09:350:09:37

Fritchley, lying just a short three-minute drive away.

0:09:370:09:40

A former market town,

0:09:400:09:42

Crich has all the amenities you could ask for,

0:09:420:09:44

a thriving community and no less than three churches.

0:09:440:09:48

A further Congregational Church can be found back in the centre of

0:09:480:09:52

Fritchley, which also hosts other

0:09:520:09:54

community events that Sarah and David might enjoy.

0:09:540:09:57

And just a short walk away from it,

0:09:570:10:00

we come to the first house in our selection.

0:10:000:10:02

Well, this is it, our first property.

0:10:020:10:05

I'm going to get you to turn round.

0:10:050:10:07

-Wow.

-It's this wonderful old cottage.

0:10:070:10:10

Interesting. It is old.

0:10:100:10:11

-Yeah.

-And it's got an archway, I love archways.

0:10:110:10:14

So first impressions?

0:10:140:10:17

-Interesting.

-Yeah?

0:10:170:10:18

To say the least. Yeah, not quite sure really.

0:10:180:10:21

Bit hard to say. Looks a bit small on the front.

0:10:220:10:24

It does look a bit small but...

0:10:240:10:27

I'm really intrigued.

0:10:280:10:29

It does have a certain charm, doesn't it?

0:10:290:10:31

-Definitely.

-Let's step inside, see what you make of it.

-OK.

0:10:310:10:35

Originally starting life as two cottages and now knocked into one,

0:10:350:10:39

this property dates back some 400 years.

0:10:390:10:42

It is semidetached and may appear to compact

0:10:420:10:45

from the front but there is a new extension to the rear

0:10:450:10:48

which really has added to the space inside.

0:10:480:10:51

We're starting off with the kitchen.

0:10:510:10:53

So, step inside.

0:10:530:10:55

Oh, lovely kitchen.

0:10:560:10:58

It's beautiful. Lovely table,

0:10:590:11:01

I can see the family round that, can't you?

0:11:010:11:04

-Yeah.

-And the range.

-It is a country kitchen, isn't it?

0:11:040:11:07

-It is.

-Yeah, it is.

-Lots of wood, lots of character, lots of charm.

0:11:070:11:10

A reasonable size as well.

0:11:100:11:11

Yeah. Now this is the oldest part of the house.

0:11:110:11:15

You can see just by the thickness of those walls.

0:11:150:11:17

I was going to say how thick the walls are.

0:11:170:11:19

-Yeah.

-There's a bit more room over there as well.

0:11:190:11:22

-That's the extension.

-Right.

-So you've got a big utility room.

0:11:220:11:25

-OK.

-With underfloor heating.

0:11:250:11:27

-OK.

-Very nice.

0:11:270:11:28

And then beyond that you've actually

0:11:280:11:31

-got a downstairs cloakroom with a shower.

-Oh, useful.

0:11:310:11:34

Initial reactions outside were...

0:11:340:11:36

Might be on the small side.

0:11:360:11:38

What do we think as we step in?

0:11:380:11:39

This is bigger than I expected it was going to be.

0:11:390:11:42

Good. Well I'm hoping you're going

0:11:420:11:43

to be equally impressed with what's next door.

0:11:430:11:46

Let's have a look.

0:11:460:11:48

So this is your sitting room.

0:11:500:11:52

What a lovely floor.

0:11:520:11:54

All reclaimed from a local pub.

0:11:540:11:56

It was going to be thrown out so the owners found it, brought it in here.

0:11:560:11:59

-What fun.

-I know - it's beautiful, isn't it?

0:11:590:12:01

-Very cosy.

-Nice big fire.

0:12:010:12:03

-Yeah.

-Wood burner.

0:12:030:12:05

Yeah, it's cosy, it's small.

0:12:050:12:07

Is the character a little bit off-putting, this charm that it has?

0:12:070:12:11

I'd love to holiday here.

0:12:110:12:13

Not sure all the time.

0:12:140:12:15

So if this side is old,

0:12:150:12:17

let me show you what's next door because that might change your mind.

0:12:170:12:21

Just through here.

0:12:210:12:23

This side, this is far more contemporary.

0:12:230:12:26

Wow. Look at this. Beautiful.

0:12:260:12:28

Nice and light, very light.

0:12:280:12:29

And that would be more room for the family to spill out into relaxing.

0:12:290:12:33

-Summer or winter.

-Exactly.

0:12:330:12:35

-Beautiful.

-To the side of us you've got the garage.

0:12:350:12:38

There's no room there for the caravan.

0:12:380:12:40

However, the owners keep their caravan at a local farm.

0:12:400:12:45

-Oh, OK.

-In actual fact there are two caravan parks, one three miles away,

0:12:450:12:49

one five miles away if you wanted to look at something more permanent.

0:12:490:12:52

-That would be amazing.

-That's useful.

0:12:520:12:53

-Good options.

-That would be a lot better than what we've got now.

0:12:530:12:56

-I take it that we are loving this room?

-Definitely. Lovely. Beautiful.

0:12:560:13:00

-Let's head upstairs and see what you make of that.

-OK.

0:13:000:13:02

It's a great start to the first property, and the modern extension

0:13:050:13:09

has really helped boost the space downstairs.

0:13:090:13:12

I just hope the four bedrooms upstairs will also appeal.

0:13:120:13:16

Two are neutrally decorated,

0:13:160:13:18

large enough for doubles and another

0:13:180:13:20

smaller bedroom is set up as a study.

0:13:200:13:23

There is also the family bathroom

0:13:230:13:25

and last to see is the final bedroom.

0:13:250:13:27

So, let me show you the master bedroom.

0:13:300:13:33

-Right.

-OK.

-Nice and bright.

0:13:330:13:36

Slightly small but lovely.

0:13:360:13:38

I love the window. It's lovely to

0:13:380:13:40

see that depth of the wall looking out.

0:13:400:13:42

-Yes.

-And then it's all countryside.

0:13:420:13:45

We really are in the heart of it here, aren't we?

0:13:450:13:49

So overall, not a bad reaction to upstairs.

0:13:490:13:51

-Definitely.

-And I think it's time to head outside, see what's there.

0:13:510:13:55

-OK, great.

-That would be lovely.

0:13:550:13:57

Once out in the garden, it will be

0:13:570:13:59

time for them to guess the price and I just hope they can see

0:13:590:14:03

the value in this charming cottage.

0:14:030:14:06

They may be feeling the squeeze

0:14:060:14:07

upstairs but the outlook of the garden could make up for it.

0:14:070:14:11

See, this is why you want to move, isn't it?

0:14:130:14:16

-Those country views.

-Beautiful views.

0:14:160:14:18

-Amazing.

-Lovely.

0:14:180:14:19

So we do have a flat garden here.

0:14:190:14:22

-Yes.

-Although, Sarah, there are some quite steep steps to get up here but

0:14:220:14:25

I'm thinking that would be worth

0:14:250:14:27

landscaping and you could just soften it.

0:14:270:14:29

Yes, you could. This is lovely and flat.

0:14:290:14:31

And if the lawnmower was in the shed, that would be fine.

0:14:310:14:34

I can put my feet up.

0:14:350:14:38

So, I wonder what's going through your mind now.

0:14:380:14:41

And how good you are going to be at guessing the price.

0:14:410:14:44

I'm no good at these things, so I'll go first.

0:14:440:14:47

I think it's on the market for 360,000.

0:14:470:14:51

-OK.

-Pounds.

0:14:510:14:53

Not knowing the area really, 370,000.

0:14:530:14:56

OK, you're both under the asking price.

0:14:560:14:59

It's actually on the market for £379,950.

0:14:590:15:04

-Oh, right. OK.

-So I can give you £50 change from your top budget.

0:15:040:15:09

You've done well. Lovely first property.

0:15:090:15:11

All right. Well have another look around on your own this time and

0:15:110:15:14

I'll catch up with you when you ready.

0:15:140:15:16

Lovely. Thanks very much.

0:15:160:15:17

Thank you.

0:15:170:15:19

On the market for just under £380,000,

0:15:210:15:24

the space in this semidetached

0:15:240:15:26

character cottage is really deceptive.

0:15:260:15:29

For it comes with four bedrooms, a modern extension,

0:15:290:15:32

a lovely country kitchen- breakfast room for Sarah

0:15:320:15:35

as well as options for David's modelling.

0:15:350:15:38

And whilst it doesn't have a huge garden,

0:15:380:15:40

there is a thriving church community right on the doorstep.

0:15:400:15:44

Initial thoughts for this house,

0:15:460:15:48

bigger than it looked from the outside.

0:15:480:15:50

And for just the two of us,

0:15:500:15:52

there's plenty of space around.

0:15:520:15:54

A little bit concerned probably

0:15:540:15:56

about the sort of parking space at the front.

0:15:560:15:59

Quite small.

0:15:590:16:00

And the garden, probably a little

0:16:000:16:02

bit on the smaller side than we were expecting.

0:16:020:16:05

What really works for me is the kitchen.

0:16:050:16:08

A lovely farm kitchen and I can

0:16:080:16:09

imagine the family sitting around chatting

0:16:090:16:12

whilst teas, coffees, meals are being prepared.

0:16:120:16:15

Really lovely, lovely warm...

0:16:150:16:17

That's what we were looking for.

0:16:170:16:19

Well, that's our first house tour done.

0:16:220:16:25

-Lovely.

-Charming cottage.

0:16:250:16:27

-Beautiful.

-Good start, I think?

0:16:270:16:28

-Very good start.

-Yeah. Very good.

0:16:280:16:30

-Thank you.

-Right, let's keep going.

-Right.

0:16:300:16:32

Derbyshire's deep clay enriched soil

0:16:380:16:40

holds the history of its industrial past

0:16:400:16:42

in pottery making.

0:16:420:16:44

200 years ago and in its prime,

0:16:440:16:46

there were 69 different potteries at work in the area,

0:16:460:16:50

only a few of which are still in business.

0:16:500:16:53

And it's to one of the most well-known, Denby Pottery,

0:16:530:16:56

that David and Sarah have come today.

0:16:560:16:58

To understand more about the heritage of the county,

0:16:580:17:01

they're meeting company historian Linda Salt.

0:17:010:17:04

How was the Denby Potteries established and how long ago?

0:17:050:17:09

In 1806, as you can imagine the

0:17:090:17:12

Industrial Revolution was well underway,

0:17:120:17:15

people needed roads to take the

0:17:150:17:17

goods to market and the road builders were busy.

0:17:170:17:20

They got as far as Denby and they discovered this magnificent,

0:17:200:17:23

enormous seam of clay.

0:17:230:17:25

The local potter, William Bourne,

0:17:250:17:28

was called to have a look at the seam of clay.

0:17:280:17:30

He recognised its attributes straightaway.

0:17:300:17:33

In 1809, he put his youngest son, Joseph,

0:17:330:17:37

on the site of the clay bed to get underway with the pottery.

0:17:370:17:41

What were they making?

0:17:410:17:42

Stoneware. Bottles and jars -

0:17:420:17:44

to basically hold liquid commodities of the day.

0:17:440:17:48

Glass was around but it was very expensive.

0:17:480:17:51

So everything basically contained in a fluid came in a ceramic bottle.

0:17:510:17:55

If we look just behind us,

0:17:550:17:57

the bottles also included hot water bottles.

0:17:570:18:00

Oh.

0:18:000:18:02

And there were the more functional-looking ones.

0:18:020:18:05

But they were some interesting shapes.

0:18:050:18:07

-Oh, wow.

-And it was intended for gentlemen.

0:18:070:18:10

-For in the bed to keep it warm.

-Yes.

0:18:100:18:13

The brand is traditionally known for its brown salt glaze,

0:18:130:18:16

an effect achieved by throwing salt into the kilns.

0:18:160:18:19

When the salt vapours combine with the clay,

0:18:190:18:21

it creates a shiny brown coating.

0:18:210:18:24

After the Second World War,

0:18:240:18:26

the company moved on to tableware

0:18:260:18:28

and whilst the glazing methods moved on,

0:18:280:18:30

some of the original processes are still done today.

0:18:300:18:34

In the factory, Sarah and David are meeting head of manufacturing,

0:18:340:18:37

Dean Barlow, and dipper Joe Pearson.

0:18:370:18:40

-Hello, guys.

-Hello there.

-Joe's dipping a teapot.

0:18:400:18:44

So basically you've got to cover

0:18:440:18:45

your thumb over the spout, otherwise the glaze flows into

0:18:450:18:49

the inside and you've got the wrong glaze inside.

0:18:490:18:51

-Yeah.

-And then you've got to dip it,

0:18:510:18:53

get the top of the handle to the top of the spout without going inside.

0:18:530:18:56

And you've got to do it fairly

0:18:560:18:57

quickly, otherwise the glaze becomes too thick

0:18:570:18:59

and it will run off the pot when it's fired.

0:18:590:19:01

-OK.

-If you want to have a go so...

0:19:010:19:03

These biscuit-fired teapots are

0:19:030:19:05

still porous and, when dipped, soak up the water

0:19:050:19:08

from the solution leaving just the glaze on the surface of the pot.

0:19:080:19:12

Then they're dried before a final firing.

0:19:120:19:14

-Very good.

-So you've missed the top of the handle slightly.

0:19:160:19:20

With 25 pairs of hands involved in the process,

0:19:200:19:23

over 150,000 pieces are made each week.

0:19:230:19:26

Using skilled craftsmanship, they are still

0:19:260:19:29

made from the original seam of Derbyshire clay discovered

0:19:290:19:32

all those years ago.

0:19:320:19:34

Once the pots are fired, finishing touches

0:19:340:19:37

are applied before a final check is made.

0:19:370:19:39

Every single piece is hand inspected.

0:19:410:19:43

So they look around the outside of the piece,

0:19:430:19:46

they check for any visible flaws and then every piece is tapped to make

0:19:460:19:51

sure that it's not got any internal cracks.

0:19:510:19:53

-Right.

-And you get a dull thud rather than that nice ring.

0:19:530:19:56

Oh. OK.

0:19:560:19:58

From the potted history to the

0:19:580:20:00

complex skills involved in making them,

0:20:000:20:02

the legacy of these ceramic pieces lives on.

0:20:020:20:05

But for now, we're turning our

0:20:050:20:08

attention back to the business of house-hunting.

0:20:080:20:14

For our next property, we are staying right in the

0:20:140:20:18

centre of their search area, this time in the village of Middleton.

0:20:180:20:21

This pretty farming hamlet grew up alongside the nearby market town of

0:20:210:20:25

Wirksworth, where there was a

0:20:250:20:27

prosperous lead mining industry in the 17th and 18th centuries.

0:20:270:20:31

Today, its period limestone buildings

0:20:310:20:33

and picturesque alleyways play host to many cafes and shops.

0:20:330:20:37

In the centre sits the grand

0:20:370:20:39

St Mary's Church, which dates back to the seventh century

0:20:390:20:42

and is associated with the Methodist church back in Middleton.

0:20:420:20:46

Again just a short stroll away from the church lies our next house.

0:20:460:20:51

Let me introduce our second property.

0:20:510:20:54

-That's nice.

-Bigger.

0:20:540:20:56

-Nice front garden.

-Really nice.

0:20:560:20:57

Lovely front garden.

0:20:570:20:59

-Pond.

-Yes.

-We've learned something on that first property,

0:20:590:21:03

never judge it by the front door.

0:21:030:21:04

-By the outside, yeah.

-Yes.

0:21:040:21:06

It's nice, I like it.

0:21:060:21:07

Makes it look bigger because you've got space in front.

0:21:070:21:10

-Yeah.

-Which I like.

-Right, I think we should

0:21:100:21:12

start having a look around our second property, don't you?

0:21:120:21:14

-Definitely.

-Yeah, sure.

0:21:140:21:16

Approached by a flagstone pathway,

0:21:160:21:18

this symmetrical cottage was built

0:21:180:21:21

in the 1760s with an added 100-year-old

0:21:210:21:24

extension at the back that perfectly blends the old and new together.

0:21:240:21:28

We are starting off in the original sitting-room.

0:21:280:21:31

Let's start off with...

0:21:330:21:36

Well, I'm going to say the first reception room.

0:21:360:21:39

OK, lovely open fire.

0:21:390:21:41

Yeah. Lovely big window.

0:21:410:21:44

Look at that stone sill.

0:21:440:21:45

-That's amazing.

-Fun.

0:21:450:21:47

-Yeah.

-Lovely.

-Got character, which is nice...

0:21:470:21:50

-And the deep...

-Little recesses.

0:21:500:21:52

Lovely having a bookcase in...

0:21:520:21:54

Set in the wall. I have lots of books, don't I?

0:21:550:21:57

Yeah. Too many.

0:21:570:21:58

So you've got this reception room and then you've got another one

0:22:000:22:03

-the other side of the hallway.

-Yes, OK.

0:22:030:22:06

Leaving behind two of the three

0:22:080:22:10

receptions in the oldest part of the house, a small doorway brings you to

0:22:100:22:13

the more modern extension at the back

0:22:130:22:15

and straight into the kitchen diner.

0:22:150:22:17

-Wow, what lovely kitchen.

-This is nice, nice and open.

0:22:170:22:22

-Yeah.

-Lots of room.

0:22:220:22:23

Now somebody wanted a large kitchen, I seem to remember.

0:22:230:22:27

-I do, yes.

-Yes.

-And?

-And a massive range.

0:22:270:22:31

I love it. It's a little bit more quirky

0:22:310:22:33

and different than I expected and lovely.

0:22:330:22:36

I really like it.

0:22:360:22:37

Yeah, lot bigger than I expected. I didn't expect a kitchen this size.

0:22:370:22:41

See, I think you want quite a large house in actual, fact.

0:22:410:22:44

I think we probably do, don't we?

0:22:440:22:45

I think for when the family come, we're all together.

0:22:450:22:48

And even for church events, meals and meetings and things.

0:22:480:22:50

Yeah, inviting people round.

0:22:500:22:52

So you've all this space here,

0:22:520:22:53

remember you've got three reception rooms.

0:22:530:22:56

The third one is just behind us next door and that leads also into a

0:22:560:22:59

utility room and downstairs cloakroom.

0:22:590:23:01

-Wow.

-OK.

-That's a lot downstairs, isn't it?

0:23:010:23:04

-That's good, yeah.

-See, you do want a big house, don't you?

0:23:040:23:06

-You do.

-Looks like it.

0:23:060:23:07

-Probably bigger than we thought.

-I think so.

0:23:070:23:10

-I think so. Well, let's see what you make of upstairs, shall we?

-OK.

0:23:100:23:14

Reconfigured to maximise space,

0:23:140:23:16

this downstairs extension has made a real impact and the four upstairs

0:23:160:23:21

bedrooms benefit as well.

0:23:210:23:23

One is a bright blue double with a washbasin.

0:23:230:23:26

A smaller double is presented with a single bed.

0:23:260:23:29

And another double is set up as a study.

0:23:290:23:33

Then, next to the family bathroom,

0:23:330:23:35

we come to the largest of the bedrooms.

0:23:350:23:37

-Oh, this is big.

-This is big.

-This is much larger...

0:23:390:23:41

I thought it would be low roofs and small rooms up here.

0:23:410:23:45

Wow, that's fantastic.

0:23:450:23:47

So, master bedroom, wonderful.

0:23:470:23:49

-Yeah.

-Lovely, fantastic.

0:23:490:23:52

-We've always...

-And wardrobes, look - fitted wardrobes.

0:23:520:23:54

That's even bigger than it even looks.

0:23:540:23:56

Yep. It's huge as it is.

0:23:560:23:58

Let's take a look at the garden because it is unusual.

0:23:580:24:01

And we're going to have to talk about that price as well.

0:24:010:24:04

-Yeah.

-Let's see how we get on.

-OK.

0:24:040:24:05

As well as a patch at the front,

0:24:080:24:10

the garden also spreads out to the side of the property

0:24:100:24:13

where pockets of lawn and flowerbeds sit alongside a number

0:24:130:24:16

of sheds as well as a large veggie plot.

0:24:160:24:19

So you've got that wonderful front garden.

0:24:200:24:23

This is yours.

0:24:230:24:25

Now, the beloved caravan could live here.

0:24:250:24:28

However, there are areas around here that actually currently rent out

0:24:280:24:32

spaces for caravans and extra cars.

0:24:320:24:35

-Lovely.

-Now what about you, Dave?

0:24:350:24:37

I sense a little bit of reticence.

0:24:370:24:39

I think although there's three reception rooms downstairs,

0:24:390:24:42

they're a bit on the small side, each of them.

0:24:420:24:45

If we have visitors and friends coming around

0:24:450:24:48

to stay and things, it...

0:24:480:24:50

Sort of end up in different rooms.

0:24:500:24:51

What do we think it's on the market for?

0:24:510:24:54

You go first this time.

0:24:540:24:55

I think it's probably over budget and I'm going to say 395.

0:24:550:24:59

OK. I was going to go for £400,000.

0:24:590:25:02

Oh, you're very close, aren't you?

0:25:020:25:04

I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised,

0:25:050:25:08

because the asking price is £364,950.

0:25:080:25:14

-Really?!

-£15,000 under budget.

0:25:140:25:19

I can't enlarge those reception rooms

0:25:190:25:21

but I'm going to send you back.

0:25:210:25:23

I want you to have another look at them now.

0:25:230:25:25

-OK, yep.

-Tell him the kitchen outweighs those reception rooms.

0:25:250:25:28

-Go on.

-I will.

-Everyone lives in the kitchen.

0:25:280:25:32

On the market just shy of £365,000,

0:25:320:25:36

this detached home gives our buyers four bedrooms,

0:25:360:25:40

one an impressive master.

0:25:400:25:41

Whilst the receptions aren't vast, there are three of them,

0:25:410:25:45

topped off with a great kitchen diner.

0:25:450:25:47

The property also boasts a level cottage garden and there are

0:25:470:25:51

opportunities to keep the caravan close by.

0:25:510:25:54

My impression of this house when we got inside,

0:25:540:25:58

the layout is bigger than you'd

0:25:580:25:59

expect and the bedrooms upstairs and the heights of the rooms...

0:25:590:26:03

I was just amazed. I love the kitchen.

0:26:030:26:05

That probably does feel like the hub - the middle of the building.

0:26:050:26:09

A nice big kitchen with plenty

0:26:090:26:11

of room for the social aspect of it as well.

0:26:110:26:15

Nice big main bedroom, which I like.

0:26:150:26:18

The outside works well. Perhaps the downside being, for me anyway,

0:26:180:26:23

although there are three reception rooms, they are on the small side.

0:26:230:26:27

This really is a splendid garden - just looking at it.

0:26:290:26:32

It is, with the sunshine and everything.

0:26:320:26:35

Even bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside.

0:26:350:26:38

I wonder if you've convinced him.

0:26:380:26:40

You're going to have to sleep on this one, Dave.

0:26:400:26:42

-I think so, yeah.

-Positive vibes for those reception rooms.

0:26:420:26:46

Guess what? That's it.

0:26:460:26:47

-Oh, OK.

-But I do have one more house to show you tomorrow.

0:26:470:26:50

-Looking forward to it.

-Good.

-Yes.

-Let's go.

-Thank you.

0:26:500:26:53

It's the start of our second day with David and Sarah,

0:27:040:27:07

from the town of Dartford in Kent,

0:27:070:27:08

who have a budget of £380,000 to spend on a rural idyll,

0:27:080:27:13

near a village with a church and strong community.

0:27:130:27:16

Still to come... At the mystery house,

0:27:160:27:18

a different taste in styles become apparent.

0:27:180:27:22

A little bit olde-worlde for me.

0:27:220:27:24

-You're learning things about him, aren't you?

-I love it!

0:27:240:27:27

And I get a real taste for the county.

0:27:270:27:29

Can't go wrong with that.

0:27:310:27:32

Well, it's been a fair start to our house search

0:27:350:27:37

but there is still room for improvement.

0:27:370:27:39

Clearly Dave and Sarah want to live in the heart of a

0:27:390:27:43

community with a good church nearby.

0:27:430:27:46

I wonder how they're going to feel if we slightly remove them from that

0:27:460:27:50

but show them a delightful Mystery House with views to match.

0:27:500:27:54

Our Mystery House is the most

0:27:570:27:59

northerly location, in Lower Lumsdale.

0:27:590:28:01

On the fringes of the Peak District,

0:28:010:28:03

it's just a five-minute drive away of the county town of Matlock.

0:28:030:28:07

A former spa town,

0:28:070:28:09

its vibrant centre is now full of

0:28:090:28:10

all the amenities and luxuries you might need,

0:28:100:28:14

plus a number of churches.

0:28:140:28:16

Nearby in the village of Tansley,

0:28:160:28:18

two further churches can be found -

0:28:180:28:20

both beautifully built from locally quarried stone.

0:28:200:28:23

Here there's also an active village hall

0:28:230:28:25

with a number of community events

0:28:250:28:27

that might suit our couple.

0:28:270:28:29

And it's just a short drive away

0:28:290:28:31

from the action in a truly rural

0:28:310:28:33

setting where we find the mystery package.

0:28:330:28:35

So a new day, our final property.

0:28:370:28:40

It's got to be the Mystery House, hasn't it?

0:28:400:28:43

-Here she is.

-Beautiful.

0:28:430:28:46

-Lovely.

-Any idea what this used to be?

0:28:460:28:49

Some sort of farm building?

0:28:490:28:50

It's actually a stable block to the big mill house.

0:28:500:28:54

It begs the question, why have we picked this?

0:28:540:28:57

It's the location.

0:28:570:28:58

This location is probably a bit further out than the other two.

0:28:580:29:02

You do have a village quite close by but we are a little bit more remote.

0:29:020:29:06

The way we came in - that's your entrance

0:29:060:29:08

and you also have an alternative

0:29:080:29:09

private entrance at the side.

0:29:090:29:11

I think we should start the tour of the house first.

0:29:110:29:14

Yes, what a good idea.

0:29:140:29:15

Come on.

0:29:150:29:17

Whilst our Mystery House is semi-detached

0:29:170:29:19

and takes us out of a central village location,

0:29:190:29:22

this character conversion, dating back to the 1800s,

0:29:220:29:25

has an ideal layout.

0:29:250:29:27

It was sympathetically extended in the 1990s

0:29:270:29:30

to provide well-proportioned rooms

0:29:300:29:32

without losing any of its original charm.

0:29:320:29:34

Right, as you walk through, you've got a small hallway.

0:29:360:29:38

-Right.

-It leads straight into

0:29:380:29:40

-our sitting room.

-Beautiful fire.

0:29:410:29:43

-It's really nice.

-This is where they would have been stabled.

0:29:430:29:46

You'd have had three horses along,

0:29:460:29:48

they'd have been tethered up against that wall.

0:29:480:29:51

-Right.

-That's why the ceilings are so high.

0:29:510:29:53

Again, the original beams have been painted white.

0:29:530:29:56

-I like that.

-A lot of character in it.

0:29:560:29:59

This is your sitting room and then

0:29:590:30:01

they've added this wonderful sunroom/conservatory.

0:30:010:30:04

A strong start, hasn't it?

0:30:050:30:06

-Very much so.

-Let's see what you make of the kitchen next door.

0:30:060:30:09

OK.

0:30:090:30:10

That's beautifully done, isn't it?

0:30:170:30:18

A place to sit, social kitchen.

0:30:180:30:21

Beautiful. Lovely and light, lot of windows.

0:30:210:30:23

We're used to lot of windows in our kitchen at home, aren't we?

0:30:230:30:27

Beautiful view overlooking the garden.

0:30:270:30:28

You don't have a separate dining room.

0:30:280:30:31

It's all rather integrated here.

0:30:310:30:34

Dave, does it work for you or would you change anything?

0:30:340:30:36

The layout's good.

0:30:370:30:40

I'm not so sure about the finish to the kitchen units.

0:30:400:30:43

It looks a little bit olde-worlde for me.

0:30:430:30:45

More cottagey, not quite the sort of thing for me, anyway.

0:30:450:30:50

You're learning things about him, aren't you?

0:30:500:30:52

-I love it!

-Perhaps you'll be changing

0:30:520:30:54

this kitchen to suit your needs.

0:30:540:30:56

-Possibly.

-We'll see, we'll see.

0:30:560:30:58

It hasn't worked its magic on you.

0:30:580:30:59

Let's see if the rest of the property does.

0:30:590:31:02

With differing tastes becoming ever more apparent,

0:31:030:31:06

I hope the three upstairs rooms give them a meeting of minds.

0:31:060:31:10

The first is a beamed country style bedroom.

0:31:100:31:13

The second, a comfortable single.

0:31:130:31:15

There is a heritage suite in the family bathroom

0:31:150:31:18

and then we come to the last room.

0:31:180:31:20

-Pretty!

-You've got this wonderful master bedroom.

0:31:220:31:24

This is the main bedroom but you've also got this little dressing area -

0:31:240:31:28

-this vanity area.

-Beautiful.

0:31:280:31:30

-Nice and light and lots of light coming in.

-Beautifully done.

0:31:300:31:33

And they've kept the wooden beams.

0:31:330:31:36

You've also got an en suite.

0:31:360:31:38

-Yeah!

-This is a beautiful room.

0:31:380:31:41

-It's got character and...

-You like what you see so far up here?

0:31:410:31:45

Lovely.

0:31:450:31:47

Well, let's head outside.

0:31:470:31:49

Dave, if you wouldn't mind leading the way for me.

0:31:490:31:51

Thank you.

0:31:510:31:52

With both parties warming to the mystery property,

0:31:540:31:56

I feel encouraged to show them the garden.

0:31:560:31:59

With just a few shallow steps,

0:31:590:32:01

it takes full advantage of its rural position,

0:32:010:32:04

benefiting from beautiful far-reaching views.

0:32:040:32:07

And here you can really appreciate the stable cottage.

0:32:090:32:14

-Yeah.

-They've laid it out beautifully.

0:32:140:32:17

Roses, different places to sit.

0:32:170:32:20

It's full of character.

0:32:200:32:22

You've got your summerhouse.

0:32:220:32:25

We're trying to be mindful of your hip.

0:32:250:32:28

Would this be OK for you?

0:32:280:32:29

It would. I could do little bits at a time.

0:32:290:32:31

What else have I got to mention?

0:32:310:32:34

-The caravan.

-The beloved caravan.

0:32:340:32:37

The good news is, there's a farm about a mile away and two campsites.

0:32:370:32:42

-Oh, OK.

-Two miles away.

0:32:420:32:44

Plenty of options.

0:32:440:32:47

-OK.

-Let's see what you make of the price.

0:32:470:32:51

I'll let you know it's only just gone on, by a week.

0:32:510:32:55

-OK.

-I'm thinking it's over budget because of its location.

0:32:550:32:59

I think it's £410,000.

0:32:590:33:04

I'm thinking probably a bit less than that.

0:33:040:33:06

£399,050.

0:33:060:33:08

The asking price for this property is...

0:33:080:33:11

I'm being mean. £320,000.

0:33:120:33:15

-Really?

-Wow! That's a lot less than the others.

0:33:150:33:19

I'm really surprised.

0:33:190:33:20

For the final time,

0:33:200:33:22

I'm going to send you two off to have a look together on your own.

0:33:220:33:26

-Please do. I'll catch up with you later.

-Thank you.

0:33:260:33:29

Now, it's not often you can show someone such a splendid property in

0:33:340:33:38

a prime location £60,000 under their budget.

0:33:380:33:43

I'm going to leave them on their own and see if Sarah can convince Dave

0:33:430:33:47

that this could be their future home.

0:33:470:33:49

Considerably under budget,

0:33:520:33:53

the Mystery House has just come on the market for £320,000.

0:33:530:33:58

A former stable block, it has a large and light kitchen/diner.

0:33:580:34:02

There are three bedrooms and a sunroom.

0:34:020:34:05

Whilst it may be more rural and a short drive from the local village,

0:34:050:34:09

it does come with spectacular, uninterrupted views.

0:34:090:34:12

I have to say, I think I've slightly

0:34:130:34:15

fallen in love with the Mystery House probably over

0:34:150:34:18

the other two houses that we've seen.

0:34:180:34:20

This living room is so warm and welcoming and lovely and bright.

0:34:200:34:25

The kitchen is very much to my taste.

0:34:250:34:27

It's country, comfortable and I'd love to be in that kitchen.

0:34:270:34:31

What I really like is the master bedroom.

0:34:310:34:34

It's a good size and lots of light in it.

0:34:340:34:37

Also the views from the

0:34:370:34:38

windows upstairs across the valley are amazing.

0:34:380:34:41

It would be great to wake up to those every morning.

0:34:410:34:44

Hello. Happy?

0:34:460:34:48

Yes, very happy. A beautiful house.

0:34:480:34:50

Considering you didn't know this county very well,

0:34:500:34:53

we've certainly done some miles, haven't we?

0:34:530:34:55

-We have.

-Three properties, varying degrees of enthusiasm for them.

0:34:550:35:00

I think you two need some time on your own and then we'll have a chat.

0:35:000:35:03

Come on.

0:35:030:35:05

With miles of meadows of lush green grass,

0:35:120:35:15

livestock flourished in Derbyshire

0:35:150:35:16

and from their plentiful supply of milk,

0:35:160:35:18

its cheese industry thrived.

0:35:180:35:21

Many villages like Hartington have a long tradition in cheesemaking.

0:35:210:35:26

The original factory, dating back to 1875,

0:35:260:35:29

became renowned when George V

0:35:290:35:31

granted it a royal warrant to supply blue Stilton to court.

0:35:310:35:35

But due to closures,

0:35:350:35:36

cheese production was set to cease in the village until five dedicated

0:35:360:35:40

locals clubbed together and took up the cause.

0:35:400:35:44

They converted rural barns into a

0:35:440:35:46

creamery and kept Hartington Stilton firmly on the map.

0:35:460:35:49

I've come to meet one of the founders,

0:35:490:35:52

Alan Salt, to find out about the present-day production.

0:35:520:35:55

I'm looking forward to hearing about

0:35:570:35:59

your new business tucked away behind this farm.

0:35:590:36:01

-Let's go through.

-Thank you.

0:36:010:36:04

What's going on in here?

0:36:070:36:08

This is curd.

0:36:080:36:10

How do we get curd?

0:36:100:36:12

This was milk... This time yesterday this would be liquid milk and we've

0:36:120:36:15

converted it into curd.

0:36:150:36:17

We're preserving the milk, we've got to get the solids out of the milk.

0:36:170:36:20

This is the fat and protein and

0:36:200:36:21

that's what we're going to make the cheese with.

0:36:210:36:23

This liquid here - is this what you're trying to drain away?

0:36:230:36:26

That's mostly water. We don't need all that.

0:36:260:36:29

What we actually producing here?

0:36:290:36:31

We're making blue Stilton cheese.

0:36:310:36:33

Stilton is a protected product and

0:36:330:36:35

we can only make it in Nottinghamshire,

0:36:350:36:38

Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

0:36:380:36:40

Derbyshire, and this area of Hartington,

0:36:400:36:42

is renowned for its cheese production.

0:36:420:36:44

There's a long history of cheesemaking in Derbyshire and we

0:36:440:36:47

are unfortunately the last one, but we're keeping it going.

0:36:470:36:50

You say you're the last one, but it did stop at one point, didn't it?

0:36:500:36:54

Yes, the oldest cheese factory in the country was three miles away.

0:36:540:36:57

That closed down in 2009, leaving no cheesemaking in Derbyshire.

0:36:570:37:01

It's incredible to think, though, if Derbyshire is one of the few

0:37:010:37:05

counties not only in this country but the whole world, that can

0:37:050:37:08

-produce something as fine as Stilton and they stop producing it.

-Yep.

0:37:080:37:11

You've turned it around and proved there is a huge market.

0:37:110:37:14

We've turned it around and there is

0:37:140:37:16

a niche for artisan cheese made on a small scale.

0:37:160:37:19

The process continues by breaking up the curd to release the

0:37:190:37:23

excess whey from the milk.

0:37:230:37:25

Next, salt and a mould culture is added.

0:37:250:37:27

It's finely milled and packed into that cylindrical moulds and left to

0:37:270:37:31

settle for three days before the next process can begin.

0:37:310:37:34

Now I'm going to show you one of the other stages in the cheesemaking

0:37:350:37:39

process, putting the crust on the cheese.

0:37:390:37:41

This is the binding process.

0:37:410:37:43

That's the cheese and I'm going to take this plastic mould off

0:37:430:37:46

that makes the cheese shape.

0:37:460:37:47

You called it a blue Stilton.

0:37:490:37:51

I can't see any blue at the moment.

0:37:510:37:53

The mould seeds are in there to make it go blue later

0:37:530:37:56

but we don't want it to go blue now - it is too soon.

0:37:560:37:59

I'm going to seal up the cheese.

0:37:590:38:01

-Yes.

-Get a bit of a cheese and put it on...

0:38:010:38:04

and put it back on the next bit.

0:38:050:38:07

Just fill the holes in.

0:38:070:38:09

In a way, it's like sealing the sides.

0:38:100:38:13

-Do you want to have a go?

-I'd love to.

0:38:130:38:14

Thank you. This is the crust that we recognise.

0:38:140:38:17

That will dry out and form the crust that everyone recognises is on a

0:38:170:38:20

piece of Stilton. That's pretty good

0:38:200:38:22

for your first time you've ever done it.

0:38:220:38:25

-This all has to be done by hand.

-All done by hand, yeah.

0:38:250:38:27

Whilst I'm getting the hang of the binding process,

0:38:280:38:31

it will take weeks of storage before it's ready for eating.

0:38:310:38:34

So to get a taste,

0:38:340:38:36

I'm parting company with Alan and heading to the centre of Hartington.

0:38:360:38:40

At The Old Cheese Shop, I'm meeting

0:38:400:38:42

another of the Creamery's owners, Claire Milner.

0:38:420:38:45

-Hi, Claire.

-Pleased to meet you.

0:38:450:38:48

-Welcome to The Cheese Shop.

-When you say, "cheese shop",

0:38:480:38:51

I wasn't expecting so many different varieties of cheese!

0:38:510:38:55

You can see my eyes have just lit up, haven't they?

0:38:550:38:58

Do you want to try some now?

0:38:580:39:00

I would love to, but will mine taste like this?

0:39:000:39:03

It should do in about eight weeks' time, yes.

0:39:030:39:06

That is delicious!

0:39:100:39:12

It's not overpowering.

0:39:120:39:13

It's got a subtle taste, doesn't it?

0:39:130:39:15

Who needs crackers?

0:39:150:39:16

Get straight to the cheese.

0:39:160:39:17

That flavour is incredible.

0:39:170:39:19

It's quite sweet, isn't it?

0:39:190:39:21

It doesn't leave the bitter taste in your mouth afterwards.

0:39:210:39:23

-Thank you very much indeed.

-Thank you. It's been a pleasure.

0:39:240:39:28

You can't go wrong with that.

0:39:280:39:30

Although these crumbs mark the end of my tour,

0:39:300:39:33

they signify a remarkable revival led by a passionate local group,

0:39:330:39:37

championing delicious Derbyshire cheese for generations to come.

0:39:370:39:41

Well, I'm feeling pretty confident that we've shown David and Sarah

0:39:420:39:46

the merits of living in glorious Derbyshire,

0:39:460:39:49

but have we found them their perfect property?

0:39:490:39:52

Let's find out.

0:39:520:39:53

Sarah and Dave. Derbyshire, do you still want to live here?

0:40:000:40:03

You've definitely sold Derbyshire to me.

0:40:030:40:06

Yes, I think it's a really nice countryside and really nice area.

0:40:060:40:10

-It's won you over.

-It has.

0:40:100:40:12

I wonder if our houses do the same because...

0:40:120:40:15

Very interesting before we the talk about the houses,

0:40:160:40:19

watching the relationship as we go through.

0:40:190:40:22

It would be fair to say, Sarah, that you've loved some of the properties,

0:40:220:40:26

-haven't you?

-Yes, I have.

0:40:260:40:28

Certainly the second house, the Georgian building,

0:40:280:40:31

had lots of room and the bedroom

0:40:310:40:33

there and the garden was just really for us.

0:40:330:40:36

The Mystery House had all those lovely elements of warmth and

0:40:360:40:41

comfort and I felt very at home there,

0:40:410:40:44

really in the kitchen and the living room.

0:40:440:40:47

I thought that you two would be quite united looking around.

0:40:470:40:51

The same ideas and demands of a property but in actually fact,

0:40:510:40:55

your views are quite different.

0:40:550:40:57

Has it surprised you?

0:40:570:40:58

It has, yes, it surprised me.

0:40:580:41:01

Perhaps seeing the different things that we like, it has surprised me.

0:41:020:41:07

Like all things, we accept there is going to be compromises.

0:41:070:41:10

It's just deciding what is best for this stage in our lives.

0:41:120:41:17

We need to think a bit further about what we want from a home

0:41:170:41:21

and what we're looking for.

0:41:210:41:22

Have any of our three properties that we've shown you

0:41:220:41:25

got close at all?

0:41:250:41:26

Probably the third house is probably the one that's closest.

0:41:260:41:31

-Is it?

-Whether it's close enough is the next question.

0:41:310:41:35

It's got lovely views but it's the little things we need to think about

0:41:350:41:40

and make sure it's right.

0:41:400:41:43

There were churches nearby that looked hopeful -

0:41:430:41:46

in the village and the town nearby.

0:41:460:41:48

What is the next logical step for you both?

0:41:480:41:51

I think the area of Derbyshire...

0:41:510:41:53

For me, it's confirmed this is the right place to be looking.

0:41:530:41:56

-That's super.

-Yes, we've agreed on that.

0:41:570:41:59

It's getting that match.

0:41:590:42:02

Derbyshire is a truly beautiful county, isn't it?

0:42:020:42:05

I'm going to be honest,

0:42:050:42:06

I'm slightly frustrated because I thought we might have done it!

0:42:060:42:10

I'm sorry, we haven't quite joined up some dots,

0:42:100:42:13

-but it is a process, isn't it?

-It is.

0:42:130:42:16

We've got you that little bit closer.

0:42:160:42:18

We wish you all the best.

0:42:180:42:20

It's been such a wonderful few days.

0:42:200:42:22

Thank you very much. We've really, really enjoyed it.

0:42:220:42:24

Yes, we have. It's been great.

0:42:240:42:26

Although we didn't find David and Sarah their perfect property,

0:42:310:42:35

it hasn't been a wasted exercise.

0:42:350:42:38

We've cemented their desire to move to this gorgeous county and,

0:42:380:42:43

with a little bit more research into the local communities,

0:42:430:42:46

I'm sure they'll be making Derbyshire their new home.

0:42:460:42:49

We wish them all the very best.

0:42:490:42:52

See you soon.
