Local legend has it that nearly 900 years ago,

0:00:020:00:04

the heir to the English throne was buried on this very beach.

0:00:040:00:06

I'll be back in just a moment to tell you where I am,

0:00:060:00:10

who he was and how he came to be here.

0:00:100:00:12

Today, it's a case of his versus hers.

0:00:290:00:33

In one corner, a giant man cave...

0:00:330:00:36

Wow, is this all mine?

0:00:360:00:37

This is just for you.

0:00:370:00:39

And in the other, a she-grotto.

0:00:390:00:42

I am going to turn this into a girl cave.

0:00:420:00:45

-Mine is bigger than yours.

-Oh!

0:00:450:00:47

But can we deliver their shared dream home?

0:00:470:00:51

-You're quite emotional.

-I am.

0:00:510:00:53

I am. That's amazing.

0:00:530:00:55

Today, I'm in Cornwall, in Falmouth.

0:00:580:01:00

And this is Gyllyngvase Beach, where William Adelin,

0:01:000:01:03

son of Henry I and grandson of William the Conqueror,

0:01:030:01:06

is said to be buried. Now, the story goes that on 25th November 1120,

0:01:060:01:11

William and his companions set sail from France on board the White Ship.

0:01:110:01:16

Disaster struck and the ship hit rocks

0:01:160:01:18

with only two of the passengers surviving.

0:01:180:01:21

Sadly, the future king wasn't one of them.

0:01:210:01:24

So this is believed to be his final resting place,

0:01:240:01:27

so much so that this beach takes its name from the legend -

0:01:270:01:31

Gyllyng - meaning William and vase - meaning grave.

0:01:310:01:36

I'll be back on this beach a little later in the show.

0:01:360:01:39

Not to hunt for his final resting place,

0:01:390:01:42

but to look for a very different kind of treasure.

0:01:420:01:45

The county of Cornwall is an English peninsula with the Celtic Sea off

0:01:450:01:49

its northern coast and the English Channel to the south.

0:01:490:01:53

The River Fal journeys for 11 miles through the county,

0:01:530:01:57

rising at Goss Moor near St Austell and flowing south to the sea.

0:01:570:02:01

The mouth of its estuary was once fiercely guarded against invasion

0:02:010:02:05

from France and the Holy the Roman Empire

0:02:050:02:08

by a pair of castles built under Henry VIII.

0:02:080:02:10

St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula and, a mile across the water,

0:02:100:02:15

Pendennis, near Falmouth.

0:02:150:02:16

This and other sites can be taken in along Cornwall's spectacular and

0:02:170:02:22

varied 300-mile section of South West Coast Path,

0:02:220:02:26

encompassing hundreds of beaches and rocky headlands.

0:02:260:02:30

Historically, the area's main sources of income were fishing,

0:02:300:02:33

farming and mining.

0:02:330:02:35

Many of Cornwall's pretty costal villages have lost large

0:02:350:02:38

fishing fleets from their harbours but at Portloe, two full-time

0:02:380:02:42

working vessels continue to bring in lobster and crab.

0:02:420:02:47

The county's soil and terrain is often unsuitable for growing crops,

0:02:470:02:51

making cattle and sheep farming a necessity.

0:02:510:02:54

From the 17th century, newly-developed breeds of sheep

0:02:540:02:57

helped support a successful wool trade,

0:02:570:03:00

and flocks in the fields remain a common sight to this day.

0:03:000:03:04

Disused copper and tin mines

0:03:040:03:06

have become an iconic part of the Cornish landscape.

0:03:060:03:10

Ore-bearing rocks provided an increasingly lucrative trade

0:03:100:03:14

from the Middle Ages until foreign competition sent the industry

0:03:140:03:17

into decline in the 19th century.

0:03:170:03:20

So, whether it's breathtaking coastal paths,

0:03:200:03:23

industrial heritage or rural landscapes you're looking for,

0:03:230:03:27

Cornwall is an incredible county to spend a few days or many years in.

0:03:270:03:32

Of course, every English county is special in its own way but Cornwall,

0:03:340:03:37

which was once a separate country,

0:03:370:03:39

is unique because it's never officially become part of England,

0:03:390:03:43

as there's never been a specific Act of Parliament to state that it has.

0:03:430:03:48

In fact, in a recent survey, 44% of the county's residents said

0:03:480:03:52

they consider themselves not British but Cornish.

0:03:520:03:56

Don't worry, though, because if you're thinking of moving here,

0:03:560:03:59

I'm sure you'll be welcomed here with open arms

0:03:590:04:02

and properties come with a fairly welcoming price tag too.

0:04:020:04:04

The average cost of a detached property here in Cornwall

0:04:040:04:08

is £277,000 -

0:04:080:04:10

that's around £23,000 less than the rest of England and Wales.

0:04:100:04:14

So, let's meet today's couple and find out why they want to move to

0:04:140:04:18

this terrific county. Or is it a country?

0:04:180:04:21

Today's house-hunting duo are actually divorcees,

0:04:220:04:26

but after splitting up with each other nearly a decade ago,

0:04:260:04:30

Nick and Julie from near Basingstoke, Hampshire,

0:04:300:04:33

rekindled their relationship for a second time,

0:04:330:04:36

following the death of a family pet.

0:04:360:04:39

The family dog died and Nick came to hold my hand

0:04:390:04:42

and, luckily, he's been there ever since.

0:04:420:04:45

It makes everything complete.

0:04:450:04:47

As much as anything can be perfect, it's perfect.

0:04:470:04:50

The pair are now planning on giving marriage another go,

0:04:520:04:55

but for Nick, starting again means moving away from the tough memories

0:04:550:04:59

of their former home.

0:04:590:05:01

As far as going back to the family home is concerned, after ten years,

0:05:010:05:04

it is mixed emotions, I think. It is somewhat strange, I must say,

0:05:040:05:07

to come back to the, I suppose, the matrimonial home again.

0:05:070:05:12

That's a slightly strange situation.

0:05:120:05:14

I'm coping with it, it's one of the reasons why I'd like to go move

0:05:160:05:19

somewhere different. I'd actually probably like to move to a different

0:05:190:05:23

house, even if it was relatively local.

0:05:230:05:25

But they're not staying local.

0:05:270:05:28

Instead, they want a fresh start in the countryside,

0:05:280:05:32

several counties away.

0:05:320:05:34

We'd like to move to mid-Cornwall,

0:05:340:05:37

between St Austell and Truro.

0:05:370:05:38

We've got a number of friends down there

0:05:380:05:40

and we just feel we could make a fantastic life for ourselves down there.

0:05:400:05:43

It's got natural beauty, its coastline is absolutely sensational.

0:05:430:05:48

We enjoy every moment we spend down there and just feel as though

0:05:480:05:53

it's the right location for us.

0:05:530:05:56

We've gone away to cottages together three times in the last year

0:05:560:06:04

and it's been fantastic.

0:06:040:06:06

To think that this could be every day of our lives is unbelievable.

0:06:060:06:11

It doesn't get any better than that, does it?

0:06:110:06:14

Losing a family pet may have brought Nick and Julie back together,

0:06:140:06:17

but their other canine companions are a big consideration in the move.

0:06:170:06:22

We've got two dogs to take with us down to Cornwall -

0:06:220:06:24

a nine-year-old Labrador and a nine-month-old English Pointer.

0:06:240:06:29

That's very much the sort of walking aspect of things and keeping us fit,

0:06:290:06:32

come rain or come shine.

0:06:320:06:34

I can't wait for the day when I actually get down there

0:06:340:06:36

to a lovely beach

0:06:360:06:38

where we just let the two dogs out and away they go.

0:06:380:06:40

That will be absolutely fantastic.

0:06:400:06:42

Relocating is the realisation of a dream that Julie thought was lost for good.

0:06:420:06:47

I would never be making this move on my own.

0:06:470:06:50

I thought that my dream had finished when the marriage finished

0:06:500:06:55

because I didn't think anyone else would ever come along in my life

0:06:550:06:59

that would want to fulfil our dream, my dream.

0:06:590:07:03

Moving to Cornwall and being with Nick will be the ultimate goal

0:07:030:07:08

and something that's going to make us so happy

0:07:080:07:12

and hopefully put all the sadness behind us.

0:07:120:07:15

For Nick, there's no time like the present.

0:07:150:07:19

It feels very much like a fresh start.

0:07:190:07:21

It's something I'm... I'm excited about it.

0:07:210:07:23

Our children, they're 20 and 22 so, to use a cliche,

0:07:230:07:26

we're going to be reaching empty-nest syndrome before too long

0:07:260:07:29

anyhow, and coupled together with what's happened to us on a personal

0:07:290:07:32

side, what a fantastic time to do it.

0:07:320:07:34

We are fit and healthy. We either get on with it or wait for the next

0:07:340:07:37

crisis to arrive. I don't want to do that.

0:07:370:07:39

Nick and Julie want to concentrate the property search in the coastal

0:07:430:07:48

area between St Austell and Truro.

0:07:480:07:50

But before I start showing them houses,

0:07:500:07:53

we're meeting in the county to discuss the move.

0:07:530:07:56

Well, Nick and Julie, welcome to Cornwall.

0:07:560:07:58

This is really exciting because this is a fresh start for both of you,

0:07:580:08:01

-isn't it?

-This is something we've always dreamed about and now it's

0:08:010:08:04

actually happening, against all the odds, really.

0:08:040:08:07

It's amazing.

0:08:070:08:09

So, when you were married for the first time, Nick,

0:08:090:08:11

was this something that you'd planned?

0:08:110:08:13

At the back of your mind, you imagined heading down to Cornwall at some point.

0:08:130:08:16

We hadn't got as far as planning it but we certainly imagined it

0:08:160:08:19

and, over and above that, we certainly hoped it would happen.

0:08:190:08:22

Now it's the opportunity to have fresh beginnings.

0:08:220:08:24

We think that's quite important.

0:08:240:08:26

The children now are 20 and 22 - they won't be around forever.

0:08:260:08:29

Let's go and do something that we want to do

0:08:290:08:31

and do it our way rather than what everybody else wants us to do.

0:08:310:08:34

How well do you know Cornwall, the pair of you?

0:08:340:08:36

Very well. Very well indeed.

0:08:360:08:38

Well, Nick's better at geography than I am.

0:08:380:08:40

Yeah, it's fair to say it's not an accident we picked on the area we picked on.

0:08:400:08:44

We have a number of friends and connections down here.

0:08:440:08:47

It's an area we know quite well. Lots of lovely rolling countryside.

0:08:470:08:50

Fantastic coastline. That's where we'd like to be if possible.

0:08:500:08:52

What about the house that you would like to live in down here?

0:08:520:08:55

-Tell me about that.

-A large kitchen.

0:08:550:08:57

We have two large dogs so they need somewhere to dry off and live.

0:08:570:09:02

Three bedrooms minimum.

0:09:020:09:05

Four if possible,

0:09:050:09:06

so all our friends and family can come and stay with us.

0:09:060:09:10

And a big garden for the dogs as well.

0:09:100:09:12

I understand, Nick, that you've got something quite specific on your

0:09:120:09:15

wish list. It wouldn't be a man cave by any chance, would it?

0:09:150:09:18

-Yeah, it could be, you know, Ginny.

-A man cave is essential.

0:09:180:09:21

I think the man cave often benefits both parties in the relationship.

0:09:210:09:24

-Doesn't it?

-Absolutely.

0:09:240:09:25

-Absolutely.

-And what about local village life?

0:09:250:09:29

Do you want anything specific about the local village?

0:09:290:09:31

Need a pub for the community, I think that's important.

0:09:310:09:34

That's where you get to meet people, isn't it,

0:09:340:09:37

and start to get involved in the community.

0:09:370:09:39

So a pub is good.

0:09:390:09:40

And what about doing any work to the property?

0:09:400:09:42

Are you prepared to get your hands dirty, knock a few walls down?

0:09:420:09:45

Nick's not very good at DIY.

0:09:450:09:47

I can't see that happening.

0:09:470:09:49

Generally, we'd like to have something we could move into now.

0:09:490:09:52

-We don't want a complete renovation.

-Now, let's talk about the budget.

0:09:520:09:55

Just remind me of what we're working with for this search.

0:09:550:09:58

We're working with a maximum of 750.

0:09:580:10:00

-And what timescale are we looking at?

-By the end of the week.

0:10:000:10:04

OK.

0:10:040:10:05

I know you've had lots of short breaks here in Cornwall,

0:10:050:10:08

but it's time to take those holiday hats off,

0:10:080:10:10

get your house-hunting hats on

0:10:100:10:12

-because we've got properties to show you. Ready?

-Fantastic.

0:10:120:10:14

Yep. Let's go.

0:10:140:10:16

For a maximum budget of £750,000,

0:10:170:10:21

Julie and Nick would like a large kitchen,

0:10:210:10:23

a dog-friendly boot room,

0:10:230:10:25

an enclosed garden,

0:10:250:10:27

as well as some private space for Nick.

0:10:270:10:29

They're not after a project

0:10:290:10:31

and would like to have a village pub nearby.

0:10:310:10:34

We've got a wonderful variety of houses to tempt them with.

0:10:340:10:38

And at each,

0:10:380:10:39

I'll be asking them to guess the asking price before I reveal it.

0:10:390:10:43

The final property is our Mystery House and it's one that could really

0:10:430:10:46

turn the search on its head.

0:10:460:10:49

So, Julie, what's this story about you and a fortune-teller?

0:10:510:10:55

So she said, "You've had a very unhappy last few years

0:10:550:10:59

"but all that's going to change.

0:10:590:11:02

"You will rekindle a relationship, all your problems will go away

0:11:020:11:05

"and you will live happily ever after."

0:11:050:11:07

I was nodding and she said, "Yes, so somebody you already know that's

0:11:070:11:11

"been in your life and you will end up moving and living by the sea."

0:11:110:11:16

So you're getting married again. Who proposed this time around?

0:11:160:11:20

I proposed. It was my turn to propose so, yes, I proposed to Nick.

0:11:200:11:26

Does this feel a bit like you are looking for your first home together again?

0:11:260:11:30

So, I was sort of out of the matrimonial home for ten years,

0:11:300:11:32

then coming back in, I don't like it terribly much.

0:11:320:11:36

It's a bit dead man's shoes, you know?

0:11:360:11:38

Whether we move to Cornwall or anywhere else,

0:11:380:11:40

we'd have to go and start somewhere else.

0:11:400:11:42

The next house will be our retirement home together.

0:11:420:11:46

-That's our view, I think, isn't it?

-That's the idea.

-Our forever home.

0:11:460:11:52

Our last home.

0:11:520:11:53

The village of Veryan

0:11:540:11:55

is the starting point for our Cornish property search.

0:11:550:11:58

Well-located for nearby towns,

0:11:590:12:01

this rural community with a 13th century church, a pub,

0:12:010:12:05

post office and stores,

0:12:050:12:07

and a parish hall hosting a range of activities, is also known

0:12:070:12:10

for its peculiar collection of thatched round houses.

0:12:100:12:14

There are five in total at the entrances to the village,

0:12:140:12:17

built by a 19th-century parson and local landowner.

0:12:170:12:21

And it is rumoured their circular design was to stop

0:12:210:12:24

the devil from hiding in the corners.

0:12:240:12:27

Our first house lies in the heart of the village

0:12:270:12:29

and dates from around the same time.

0:12:290:12:31

-So here we go. Very pretty thatched cottage.

-Wow.

0:12:320:12:36

-It is very pretty, isn't it?

-Chocolate box.

0:12:360:12:39

It's what you would see on a postcard.

0:12:390:12:42

Picture perfect. I love chocolate box houses.

0:12:420:12:46

I'm slightly nervous about the thatch,

0:12:460:12:49

only because you worry how often they need repairing or re-thatching.

0:12:490:12:56

Certainly for prettiness, it does look super.

0:12:560:12:59

Well, it's going to be looking absolutely pristine in just

0:12:590:13:02

a very short while because it's about to have a lot of repair work

0:13:020:13:05

done to it so that's all about to be done

0:13:050:13:08

so it will be looking as good as new pretty soon

0:13:080:13:11

and as long as you're regular with your upkeep and you take

0:13:110:13:15

care of it, then this thatch should outlast the two of you, I'm afraid.

0:13:150:13:19

That's encouraging. It's sort of encouraging.

0:13:190:13:24

-Why don't we go in and explore?

-Let's do that, yeah, great.

0:13:240:13:27

Originally built in the 19th century, a front porch

0:13:290:13:32

and kitchen were added in the 1970s.

0:13:320:13:35

Further extensions were made by the current owners in 2009.

0:13:350:13:39

Currently run as a holiday let, an entrance lobby

0:13:390:13:42

leads into the kitchen with an open-plan dining room.

0:13:420:13:47

Well, you said you wanted a nice kitchen.

0:13:470:13:49

-And this is certainly a nice kitchen.

-It's lovely, isn't it?

0:13:490:13:52

Room for a nice big table.

0:13:520:13:54

Yeah, timbers are nice, aren't they, as well? The cabinets.

0:13:540:13:57

The current owner has added on this lovely extension

0:13:570:14:00

and garden room that really opens it up.

0:14:000:14:02

-With all that beautiful green oak.

-Really, really nice.

-Yeah.

0:14:020:14:06

This sense of open-plan living,

0:14:060:14:08

-is this the kind of thing you were hoping to find?

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:14:080:14:12

-No complaints, that's for sure. It's very nice.

-It flows, doesn't it?

0:14:120:14:15

It's nice.

0:14:150:14:17

You can spill out and feel like that's your kitchen as well.

0:14:170:14:21

We haven't got the low ceilings. I'm not bumping my head, am I?

0:14:210:14:24

-It's not dark.

-It has that sort of character feel but not ancient.

0:14:240:14:29

-Shall we go and see if we can find you a man cave?

-Is there one?

0:14:290:14:32

-Is there one?

-Go and have a look. See what we find.

-OK.

0:14:320:14:36

Back across the entrance lobby,

0:14:360:14:38

we find the rest of the reception spaces.

0:14:380:14:40

-So, into the older part of the house and it's cosy.

-Isn't it just?

0:14:400:14:45

It's beautiful. Very cosy, very warm and inviting.

0:14:450:14:49

There's lots of windows. A cosy log burner.

0:14:490:14:53

Nick, we haven't got you a man cave so much as a man cupboard.

0:14:530:14:57

There you go. In you go. Go on, in your cupboard.

0:14:570:14:59

I'll go in here then.

0:14:590:15:02

-We'll see you later. Bye.

-Bye.

-See you later, then. Lovely.

0:15:020:15:06

And then we can just relax in here. Come on, Nick, let's get you out.

0:15:060:15:10

-So it's a cosy separate space.

-Yeah, it's nice.

0:15:100:15:13

-That's all you need, really, isn't it?

-That's room for me.

-That's good.

0:15:130:15:16

-No, it's lovely. It's nice.

-So, come on, guys, what do you think?

0:15:160:15:19

What's going on in your minds?

0:15:190:15:21

Outside, looking at the roof and everything I thought, oh, gosh,

0:15:210:15:24

but it's totally different inside to outside.

0:15:240:15:29

-It's very, very nicely finished inside.

-Yeah, it's beautiful.

0:15:290:15:33

I don't think anybody could say otherwise. Absolutely not.

0:15:330:15:36

I think there's a lot of flexibility with the space.

0:15:360:15:38

I know you were hoping for three bedrooms. Haven't got you three bedrooms. We've got you four.

0:15:380:15:42

-Oh.

-OK, we'll settle for that.

-Let's take a look.

0:15:420:15:46

The immaculate presentation inside this pretty period property has

0:15:480:15:51

come as a pleasant surprise to them both.

0:15:510:15:54

This floor is rounded off with a handy cloakroom,

0:15:540:15:56

then central stairs lead to the sleeping accommodation.

0:15:560:16:00

In the original part of the house, it's a large double with

0:16:000:16:03

en suite, and another guest room currently used as a twin.

0:16:030:16:06

Then, over the kitchen, the third bedroom is large enough for

0:16:070:16:10

a double or twin beds

0:16:100:16:12

and is situated next to the family bathroom.

0:16:120:16:15

Finally, the room that could be Nick

0:16:150:16:17

and Julie's makes bedroom number four.

0:16:170:16:20

-So the master bedroom.

-Lovely.

0:16:200:16:22

-Very pretty.

-Not that big.

-No, it's petite.

0:16:220:16:26

This has got a lovely en-suite bathroom.

0:16:260:16:29

I'm thinking, where does everything go?

0:16:290:16:31

If we were moving lock, stock and barrel with all our stuff

0:16:310:16:34

and entourage, I'm beginning to question where everything

0:16:340:16:38

-gets stored on a day-to-day basis.

-Are you referring to all my clothes?

0:16:380:16:42

-Well, amongst other things, dear.

-It could be all Nick's clothes.

0:16:420:16:45

-All mine.

-I do have three wardrobes at home.

0:16:450:16:49

Right then, OK. So that fourth bedroom/dressing room...

0:16:490:16:54

Chocolate box cottages tend not to come with huge amounts of space.

0:16:540:16:58

Yeah. I'm sensing fabulous

0:16:580:17:03

-but I'm also sensing perhaps it's a bit on the small side.

-OK.

0:17:030:17:07

Well, let's go and explore the garden. Have a chat about outside.

0:17:070:17:09

You've got a lovely view from that Juliet balcony so let's go

0:17:090:17:12

-and see what it is that we're looking down at.

-Lovely.

0:17:120:17:14

Thank you very much.

0:17:140:17:15

If Nick and Julie had been feeling the pinch over the sleeping quarters,

0:17:170:17:21

let's see what they make of the garden.

0:17:210:17:23

With areas of lawn and shrubs to the front and side,

0:17:230:17:26

there's also a nearby stream and a paved patio area with seating.

0:17:260:17:31

It's a no-nonsense garden. Not much upkeep on it.

0:17:320:17:35

It's not quite enough, I don't think, for us.

0:17:350:17:39

I think we need more space.

0:17:390:17:41

The conclusion is certainly it's got holiday house written all over it,

0:17:410:17:45

-the more we've looked at it.

-Nick and Julie, it's come to that time.

0:17:450:17:48

-Do you want to guess the price?

-Ladies first, of course.

-Go on, then.

0:17:480:17:52

I think this house is on the market, Ginny, for £610,000.

0:17:520:17:57

I'm actually going to go a little bit lower.

0:17:570:18:00

I'm going to go 575.

0:18:000:18:02

Wow, you're both under budget. OK!

0:18:020:18:05

You are correct, it is under budget.

0:18:060:18:09

It's on the market for £595,000.

0:18:100:18:14

Why don't you go in, have another look around

0:18:140:18:17

now you know the price, see if that changes things slightly?

0:18:170:18:19

Might just change our view somewhat.

0:18:190:18:21

Yes, we'll do that. Thank you.

0:18:210:18:24

Coming in at £155,000 below their top budget,

0:18:240:18:28

this Cornish thatched cottage provides...

0:18:280:18:32

I think the house looks so pretty

0:18:410:18:45

and as you would expect from a Cornish cottage.

0:18:450:18:49

The finishings on the inside are absolutely pristine.

0:18:490:18:52

It is beautifully presented.

0:18:520:18:54

I love the fact that the walls are clean and white.

0:18:540:18:57

I love the timbers.

0:18:570:18:58

It's beautiful, from that point of view.

0:18:580:19:00

I am slightly concerned where I'm going to put all of our things.

0:19:000:19:04

A beautiful holiday home, or a second home,

0:19:040:19:08

but not perhaps the main family retirement home.

0:19:080:19:12

We done?

0:19:170:19:19

We're done, I think. Yeah, lovely.

0:19:190:19:21

-More to see, come on.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:19:210:19:23

That's lovely, thank you very much.

0:19:230:19:24

The Cornish peninsula is resplendent with historical architecture,

0:19:320:19:36

microclimates supporting unique gardens, and farming traditions.

0:19:360:19:40

With Nick and Julie keen to enjoy everything the county has to offer,

0:19:400:19:44

we've lined up a visit to somewhere that combines all of these features.

0:19:440:19:48

Caerhays Estate on the coast near St Austell

0:19:480:19:51

includes a 200-year-old castle,

0:19:510:19:53

magnificent gardens and a working farm.

0:19:530:19:58

Estate manager Jamie Parsons is here to fill Nick and Julie in

0:19:580:20:02

on the origins of this grand location.

0:20:020:20:05

Fantastic place, Jamie. There's got to be so much history, tell us about it.

0:20:050:20:08

Yeah, the house here, this was built around 1810.

0:20:080:20:11

It was built by the Trevanion family

0:20:110:20:12

and the architect was Sir John Nash,

0:20:120:20:14

who is also the architect of Buckingham Palace.

0:20:140:20:16

It was the Trevanion family who had the house built,

0:20:160:20:19

but they went bankrupt in the 1840s and they fled to France

0:20:190:20:23

and the Williamses came here and purchased the property,

0:20:230:20:26

but unfortunately, all the roof... all the lead off the roof was taken

0:20:260:20:30

-to pay some of the Trevanion debts, so...

-Wow!

0:20:300:20:32

Yeah, so there was a lot of work for the Williams family to do

0:20:320:20:36

before they actually moved in and they do say there were actually

0:20:360:20:39

ducks swimming in the dining room when they got here.

0:20:390:20:42

It may have taken the Williams family four years

0:20:420:20:45

to fully restore the castle, but almost two centuries later,

0:20:450:20:49

it's still their descendants' family home.

0:20:490:20:51

Much of it remains just as it was in the 19th century

0:20:510:20:55

and can be seen by the public on weekday tours,

0:20:550:20:57

but it's the impressive gardens that attract the majority of visitors

0:20:570:21:02

and it's easy to see why.

0:21:020:21:04

Featuring camellias, rhododendrons

0:21:050:21:07

and one of only four national magnolia collections in the country,

0:21:070:21:11

with around 800 different specimens.

0:21:110:21:13

Oh, amazing!

0:21:150:21:16

Good gosh! Isn't it? Isn't it amazing?

0:21:160:21:20

So, how is it, Jamie, that we've got all these magnolias

0:21:200:21:23

at Caerhays in particular?

0:21:230:21:24

Well, it all really started around the 20th century,

0:21:240:21:27

with Ernest Wilson and George Forrest, the great plant collectors.

0:21:270:21:30

They went off to China, plant collecting.

0:21:300:21:32

Our first sort of rhododendrons came here in around 1905

0:21:320:21:36

from Ernest Wilson, so it really just all stemmed from there.

0:21:360:21:39

The Williams family directly sponsored

0:21:400:21:43

many of the plant-hunting trips to China,

0:21:430:21:47

to the tune of £300,000 in today's money.

0:21:470:21:49

The rich acidic soil at Caerhays,

0:21:490:21:51

along with its sheltered and wooded location bathed in sea mist,

0:21:510:21:55

makes the conditions here very similar

0:21:550:21:57

to the Chinese mountain habitat the plants were sourced from.

0:21:570:22:00

And how old is this one?

0:22:000:22:03

This one was planted around 1957.

0:22:030:22:06

Our oldest magnolia was Magnolia stellata

0:22:060:22:10

-and that was planted in 1897.

-Wow.

0:22:100:22:12

-They are a fair old age, some of the plants here.

-Aren't they just?

0:22:120:22:15

So, how do you look after them, to get them looking like this?

0:22:150:22:19

They pretty much look after themselves.

0:22:190:22:20

The only real problem we have is slugs and snails,

0:22:200:22:23

rabbits, they will completely ring-bark them, and deer.

0:22:230:22:27

Early spring may be prime magnolia season,

0:22:270:22:30

but it's also lambing time at the estate farm.

0:22:300:22:34

This year, as usual,

0:22:340:22:35

the flock of Dorset sheep is keeping farm manager Hamish Ross very busy.

0:22:350:22:40

So, how many are born here every year?

0:22:420:22:44

We have about 700 lambs a year, out of about 500 ewes.

0:22:440:22:49

500 ewes?! Gosh! 700 lambs!

0:22:490:22:52

And how old are they now?

0:22:520:22:54

These are about ten days old.

0:22:540:22:56

This one is a little bit older.

0:22:560:22:58

Why is it important for you to farm sheep here at Caerhays?

0:22:580:23:02

The sheep suit the ground.

0:23:020:23:05

It's quite harsh and we have a lot of clifftop ground,

0:23:050:23:10

which you can't do anything else with.

0:23:100:23:13

Right, OK.

0:23:130:23:14

So it's just the best way to manage the land.

0:23:140:23:17

Hardy animal, to cope with the climate.

0:23:170:23:20

How long does the bottle feeding process go on for?

0:23:200:23:22

-These will be weaned at about a month old.

-Yeah.

0:23:220:23:25

So they've got another couple of weeks to go yet.

0:23:250:23:28

When a ewe gives birth to more than one lamb,

0:23:280:23:30

she can struggle to feed all her offspring.

0:23:300:23:33

Since a number of triplets were born this year,

0:23:330:23:36

bottle feeding them reconstituted dried sheep's milk

0:23:360:23:39

ensures that all the lambs get enough.

0:23:390:23:42

And how often do you have to feed them?

0:23:420:23:44

We bottle-feed about four times a day.

0:23:440:23:47

Four times a day?!

0:23:470:23:48

You obviously need a few hands to help you.

0:23:480:23:51

I can't imagine.

0:23:510:23:52

As they get older, you feed them less

0:23:520:23:54

-and get them onto hay and...

-Solids.

0:23:540:23:58

Solids, yes.

0:23:580:23:59

Well, thank you, Hamish, I've really enjoyed it

0:23:590:24:02

and I think this lamb did too...

0:24:020:24:04

-No, pleasure.

-..and it's been a perfect experience.

0:24:040:24:09

Well, it's time to leave the lambs and this wonderful estate

0:24:090:24:12

as we continue our search for Nick and Julie's own home and garden

0:24:120:24:16

here in Cornwall.

0:24:160:24:17

Our house-hunting is heading to Lower Porthpean,

0:24:210:24:25

a Cornish coastal hamlet.

0:24:250:24:27

A little over a mile away,

0:24:270:24:28

the larger village of Charleston provides plenty

0:24:280:24:31

of traditional Cornish fare, from cream teas to pasties.

0:24:310:24:35

Built between 1790 and 1810, for the export of copper and clay,

0:24:350:24:40

30-40 shiploads of clay continue to depart from this harbour every year.

0:24:400:24:46

The rocky coastline has proved treacherous to seafarers

0:24:460:24:49

over the years but it's also the prime draw of the region

0:24:490:24:53

and a spectacular backdrop for the house we've come to see.

0:24:530:24:56

So, I've brought you straight to the

0:24:560:24:58

back of this lovely 1930s detached house. But this is the main event.

0:24:580:25:03

-Some view, isn't it?

-Some event.

0:25:030:25:07

It's stunning. It is stunning.

0:25:070:25:09

That little gate there takes you straight onto the coastal path.

0:25:090:25:13

-Does it, really?

-Wow.

-It does. So you can walk for as long as you want

0:25:130:25:15

to walk on there and you've got the spectacular views down over

0:25:150:25:19

St Austell Bay, the Gribben peninsula.

0:25:190:25:21

-Yeah.

-It's a beautiful setting.

0:25:210:25:22

It's gorgeous.

0:25:220:25:24

-I agree.

-I think it's a pretty house.

0:25:240:25:27

-Do you?

-Yeah.

0:25:270:25:28

Can I drag you away from the garden and the view?

0:25:280:25:31

-Already?

-Yes.

0:25:310:25:33

Wait till we see it from the inside.

0:25:330:25:34

Come on. Follow on.

0:25:340:25:36

This is impressive.

0:25:360:25:38

This 1930s property has been extended and altered over the years

0:25:380:25:43

with a rendered brick exterior and Cornish slate roof.

0:25:430:25:46

A hallway accessed via the rear terrace

0:25:460:25:48

takes us through to a semi- open-plan wing housing the kitchen,

0:25:480:25:53

dining room and sun lounge.

0:25:530:25:55

This is a good place to start.

0:25:550:25:57

Let's check out the views from in here as well.

0:25:570:25:59

-Lovely.

-That's a lovely room, isn't it?

0:25:590:26:01

Takes full advantage...

0:26:010:26:03

-It does, doesn't it?

-..of the location.

0:26:030:26:06

-Yeah.

-It's got that open-plan, airy feel.

0:26:060:26:09

And, as you say, really takes advantage

0:26:090:26:11

of this fantastic position.

0:26:110:26:13

-Yeah.

-And then if we do a quick swivel around...

0:26:130:26:15

here we have the kitchen.

0:26:150:26:18

So, this would be the main entrance into the house, actually,

0:26:180:26:20

the door back here, so you would be coming in

0:26:200:26:22

-through that entrance hall into the kitchen.

-Yeah.

0:26:220:26:24

What are your thoughts?

0:26:240:26:26

Yeah...

0:26:260:26:27

-Very big-size, usable area.

-Yes.

0:26:270:26:30

We'd probably want to play around with it a little bit,

0:26:300:26:33

try and make a bit more of it, maybe...

0:26:330:26:35

I don't know what opportunity there is

0:26:350:26:38

to open things out so that we've got one major room in here,

0:26:380:26:41

but certainly potential.

0:26:410:26:42

My mind's already racing as to what I can do and how I can play around

0:26:420:26:46

with this to make it right for us.

0:26:460:26:48

While this is a great space to live in, there is another one.

0:26:480:26:51

So let me just wander through here and I'll show you the main

0:26:510:26:54

-living space.

-That's great.

-Oh.

-OK. Fantastic.

0:26:540:26:57

A great start.

0:26:570:26:58

And across the hallway is even more reception space.

0:26:580:27:02

So here we are, in the cosy sitting room.

0:27:020:27:05

-This is lovely, isn't it?

-Yes, very nice.

0:27:050:27:08

Decent-sized room. Sizeable room, decent high ceiling.

0:27:080:27:11

Coal fire burning away in winter.

0:27:110:27:14

What we're lacking, Nick, so far is your man cave.

0:27:140:27:17

You're going to find me one, I've just got a feeling.

0:27:170:27:19

I've got an idea for one.

0:27:190:27:21

So just off the entrance hall is a little downstairs

0:27:210:27:24

toilet and utility room.

0:27:240:27:27

Behind this wall is an integrated garage.

0:27:270:27:30

I don't know how important the garage is to you.

0:27:300:27:32

If it's not that important, it would be a relatively simple job,

0:27:320:27:35

with the right planning permission, to convert that into your man cave.

0:27:350:27:40

OK. Well, if you can convince me of that, that will be good news.

0:27:400:27:43

My head is spinning in trying to work out a plan at the moment,

0:27:430:27:48

in terms of how to make it work for us, for modern contemporary living.

0:27:480:27:51

So you're imagining yourselves here?

0:27:510:27:53

-Well, yes...

-It... It's a curveball for me, to be perfectly honest.

0:27:530:27:57

It is, it is. I wasn't prepared for the view...

0:27:570:28:00

-So it's a curveball for you, as well?

-..the location. Absolutely.

0:28:000:28:03

The house is very pretty

0:28:030:28:05

and it's something we would never have considered.

0:28:050:28:07

There's something special about this house and I think it has a very,

0:28:070:28:10

-very nice feel to it.

-It does. It does.

0:28:100:28:13

Well, credit to you, you've achieved.

0:28:130:28:15

-You have.

-Great.

0:28:150:28:17

Shall we go upstairs and see if we can carry on with this momentum?

0:28:170:28:21

Let's go and investigate.

0:28:210:28:23

The incredible views and generous proportions of this 1930s home

0:28:230:28:28

have certainly opened Nick and Julie's eyes to its potential.

0:28:280:28:32

Stairs in the central hallway take us to the three bedrooms upstairs.

0:28:320:28:36

There is a good-sized guest room and another slightly smaller bedroom,

0:28:360:28:39

both with double aspect windows to take advantage of the views.

0:28:390:28:43

These rooms are served by a family bathroom but I think it's the large

0:28:430:28:47

master en suite that will really capture their imagination.

0:28:470:28:52

And here we are in the master bedroom.

0:28:520:28:54

-This is more like it.

-Nice size. A lovely-sized room, isn't it?

0:28:540:28:58

Plenty of light, windows on two sides.

0:28:580:29:00

-That's good.

-Another lovely view.

0:29:000:29:03

-A quick peep in there.

-Thank you very much.

0:29:030:29:05

-Ah, it's an en suite.

-En suite.

-Oh, yes.

0:29:050:29:07

Oh, it's much bigger than I expected.

0:29:070:29:09

This is doing the job as a bedroom, for sure.

0:29:090:29:11

-Very much so.

-So how are you feeling at this point, then?

0:29:110:29:14

I'm feeling as though the downstairs bit is still buzzing, in terms of...

0:29:140:29:19

I've got this floor space going around in my head and working out

0:29:190:29:22

what's going to happen.

0:29:220:29:23

Well, you'll have plenty of time to take it all in but let's just go

0:29:230:29:26

back outside to the garden

0:29:260:29:28

because it is definitely the big wow-point in this house.

0:29:280:29:31

And you're going to have to start thinking about what you think

0:29:310:29:34

-it's on the market for.

-It's a tricky one, this, isn't it?

0:29:340:29:37

Yes, it is.

0:29:370:29:38

So we've got approval for this home's generous interiors,

0:29:380:29:41

and the exterior certainly doesn't disappoint.

0:29:410:29:44

To the front of the property,

0:29:440:29:46

a drive providing parking for several cars leads to the

0:29:460:29:49

integral garage and is fringed with shrubbery.

0:29:490:29:52

There's a further area of garden to the side and then, of course,

0:29:520:29:56

the rear garden with those stunning sea views.

0:29:560:30:00

What about the size?

0:30:020:30:04

I know you wanted a big garden, but is it big enough?

0:30:040:30:06

Yes. Yes, it is.

0:30:060:30:08

I think taking some of the shrubs back, do a little bit of tidying up,

0:30:080:30:13

it would make it seem bigger.

0:30:130:30:15

And, of course, the joy is that you've got the coastal path there,

0:30:150:30:18

so your garden is extended to the beach, really, isn't it?

0:30:180:30:22

And you've got the best kind of garden in the world

0:30:220:30:24

because everything through that gate is beautiful,

0:30:240:30:27

-but you don't need to look after it. It's wonderful!

-Got to be good!

0:30:270:30:31

Now comes the tricky part.

0:30:310:30:33

We need to know what this house is on the market for.

0:30:330:30:36

I could be miles out here.

0:30:360:30:38

650.

0:30:380:30:40

I'm going to say 675.

0:30:400:30:43

You're both wrong, I'm afraid.

0:30:430:30:45

-Oh.

-Yes, you are. It was on the market for £750,000,

0:30:450:30:49

it's been reduced and is now on the market for £710,000.

0:30:490:30:53

-OK.

-I would say you would have enough left in the budget there

0:30:530:30:56

to do the things that you would potentially like to do.

0:30:560:30:59

Yeah. As I say, lots of vision on my part to be done.

0:30:590:31:02

-Yes.

-Off you go. Take a look.

-Can we not go that way?

0:31:020:31:05

No, I'm going to stay here and enjoy the view,

0:31:050:31:07

you go and look at the views from the house.

0:31:070:31:09

-OK.

-No problem. Thank you.

-Call me when you're ready.

0:31:090:31:12

At £40,000 below their top budget,

0:31:140:31:17

this 1930s house with coastal views provides...

0:31:170:31:21

This house has thrown the two of us because it's something that we would

0:31:320:31:37

never have normally considered,

0:31:370:31:38

we would have driven past not knowing what it was hiding

0:31:380:31:42

out the back here with the view and the location,

0:31:420:31:46

the size of the rooms.

0:31:460:31:48

Really, really good. It's all there.

0:31:480:31:51

I'd pretty much given up on the idea of front-line seafront and my head

0:31:510:31:55

is spinning at the moment. But, yes, I think we could do this.

0:31:550:31:58

Yes, we'd definitely have to do some work,

0:31:580:32:00

that would be important that we do that but, yes,

0:32:000:32:03

it's a distinct possibility.

0:32:030:32:04

You've come to tear me away from the lovely view, haven't you?

0:32:060:32:08

We have. We have, sadly.

0:32:080:32:10

-It's sensational.

-I hope this house has taught you that you should never

0:32:100:32:13

judge a book by the cover,

0:32:130:32:14

cos you wouldn't have looked at it and you'd have missed out on this.

0:32:140:32:17

-That's true.

-Come on. Time to leave it.

0:32:170:32:20

We're in the coastal county of Cornwall

0:32:340:32:37

helping Nick and Julie from near Basingstoke, Hampshire,

0:32:370:32:40

make a fresh start by the sea with their budget of £750,000.

0:32:400:32:45

So far, we've shown them some great property but there's more to see.

0:32:450:32:50

And I have very high hopes for our Mystery House.

0:32:500:32:53

So this is the topsy-turvy living space.

0:32:550:32:58

You really do get a panorama from here, don't you?

0:32:580:33:01

In line with the trees.

0:33:010:33:03

Yeah, it's a Mystery House, isn't it?

0:33:030:33:05

Plus, I rekindle a childhood passion

0:33:050:33:08

as I search for treasure in the sand.

0:33:080:33:11

It's great to do, isn't it?

0:33:110:33:12

-It is good fun.

-It's relaxing.

0:33:120:33:14

It's quite compulsive and kind of an addictive hobby, really.

0:33:140:33:16

It's the second day of our search here in Cornwall and we certainly

0:33:190:33:22

gave Nick and Julie plenty to think about yesterday,

0:33:220:33:25

but today is a whole new house-hunting day.

0:33:250:33:28

And while the weather may not be particularly kind to us,

0:33:280:33:30

we do have two fantastic properties lined up,

0:33:300:33:34

including the Mystery House,

0:33:340:33:36

which could quite literally turn Nick and Julie's world upside down.

0:33:360:33:40

But before that, we are off to the hamlet of Ruan High Lanes,

0:33:410:33:45

where our next house is located.

0:33:450:33:47

Nestled in the picturesque Roseland Peninsula,

0:33:470:33:50

the coastal village of Portscatho is around five minutes' drive away.

0:33:500:33:54

Here it's possible to enjoy a drink with a sea view

0:33:540:33:57

from either the cafe or public house,

0:33:570:33:59

and pick up provisions from the butcher's

0:33:590:34:01

or the bakery and delicatessen.

0:34:010:34:03

Back in Ruan High Lanes,

0:34:030:34:05

our next property is one of a cluster of converted farm buildings.

0:34:050:34:10

So, Julie, a little birdie told me you quite like barn conversions.

0:34:100:34:14

I love barn conversions.

0:34:140:34:16

Stunning, isn't it?

0:34:160:34:18

-What a building.

-It's beautiful.

0:34:180:34:20

It's five old farm buildings that were all converted in 1998.

0:34:200:34:25

This one right in front of us, the largest,

0:34:250:34:28

is the one I'm bringing you to see today.

0:34:280:34:30

Beautiful. It is an amazing building.

0:34:300:34:32

I'm getting over it just at the moment. It's just amazing.

0:34:320:34:35

Would you like to go inside?

0:34:350:34:37

-I'd love to go inside.

-Sooner rather than later, please.

-Come on.

0:34:370:34:40

Originally built as a stone barn in 1868,

0:34:410:34:44

a private front door leads into the home,

0:34:440:34:46

which is currently run as a holiday let.

0:34:460:34:50

So, straight in through this fantastic entrance hall

0:34:500:34:53

into just a rather small living space.

0:34:530:34:55

-Wow.

-That's a living room, isn't it?

0:34:550:34:58

It's lovely. It's huge.

0:34:580:35:00

It's full of character.

0:35:000:35:02

You've got the size, haven't you?

0:35:020:35:05

-It's imposing, isn't it?

-You've got lots of character in here,

0:35:050:35:08

which I know you were both keen on, but you have, quite unusually,

0:35:080:35:12

a lot of space as well.

0:35:120:35:13

It's fabulous.

0:35:130:35:15

-Is it too big? I mean...

-No, no!

-..is this a space you could use?

0:35:150:35:18

No. It depends if we've got 14 other rooms of this size!

0:35:180:35:20

That might be a problem!

0:35:200:35:23

Well, funnily enough...!

0:35:230:35:26

You might just need to follow me this way because...

0:35:260:35:29

-the man cave.

-You mean this isn't it?

0:35:290:35:31

Just... I'll explain. Lead on. Come on.

0:35:310:35:34

Lying to one side of this main reception room

0:35:340:35:38

is indeed a potential den for Nick.

0:35:380:35:40

It's a cave, it's a chasm, it's a cavern.

0:35:400:35:43

It's enormous, that's for sure.

0:35:430:35:45

Wowee, is this all mine?

0:35:450:35:47

This is just for you.

0:35:470:35:48

-A lovely room.

-Sign on the door, by invitation...

0:35:480:35:51

Only!

0:35:510:35:52

Wowee.

0:35:530:35:55

What another stunning reception room!

0:35:550:35:58

-We're doing very well, here.

-So far.

0:35:580:36:01

-Just say so good.

-It's a lot of space.

-So far, so amazing.

0:36:010:36:04

-We've got the man cave. Tick for that.

-Yes, big tick.

0:36:040:36:07

-Kitchen?

-Yes.

0:36:070:36:09

Thank you.

0:36:090:36:10

On the opposite side of the main reception

0:36:110:36:14

is a similarly vast kitchen-diner.

0:36:140:36:16

Now, Julie, I know you wanted the kitchen

0:36:180:36:21

to be the heart of the home...

0:36:210:36:22

Oh, my goodness!

0:36:230:36:26

More character...

0:36:260:36:28

More features, more ceiling.

0:36:280:36:31

-More space.

-More space!

0:36:310:36:33

That's beautiful, isn't it?

0:36:330:36:35

-You look quite emotional.

-I am.

0:36:350:36:37

I am. That's amazing.

0:36:370:36:39

This is a fabulous kitchen.

0:36:390:36:41

It's quite a sociable space, is this what you were looking for?

0:36:410:36:44

Yes, you could have parties in here, you wouldn't need to go into

0:36:440:36:47

the other rooms. Everything you need is here.

0:36:470:36:50

-It's really lovely.

-BIRDS CHIRRUP

0:36:500:36:53

We can hear the birds that are nesting in the eaves, I think.

0:36:530:36:55

Let's carry on with the animal theme

0:36:550:36:57

and talk about your four-footed friends.

0:36:570:36:59

At the back here we've got an absolutely enormous

0:36:590:37:02

boot room/utility, with a separate toilet as well.

0:37:020:37:06

And it's got a separate door.

0:37:060:37:07

So you can come in, get the muddy towels out the way,

0:37:070:37:10

clean the dogs off, let them dry.

0:37:100:37:12

And there's a big enough space there that you could keep them in there

0:37:120:37:15

-while they were drying off.

-Oh, that's really, really good.

0:37:150:37:18

-That's important.

-Well, let's talk about bedrooms.

0:37:180:37:20

-Go on, you can lead on.

-Thank you.

0:37:200:37:22

This is going really well.

0:37:230:37:25

Continuing the theme of generous spaces,

0:37:270:37:30

this barn conversion comes with a total of four bedrooms.

0:37:300:37:34

The first is located on the ground floor and is a large double,

0:37:340:37:37

next to which is a downstairs shower room.

0:37:370:37:41

Upstairs, another large guest room sits beside the family bathroom

0:37:410:37:45

with shower. And there's a further guest double.

0:37:450:37:49

Then, above the main reception room, is the impressive master suite.

0:37:490:37:53

I did warn you that the bedrooms were fairly big.

0:37:530:37:56

-Oh, my goodness!

-I wasn't exaggerating.

0:37:560:37:59

-Huge.

-Lovely.

0:37:590:38:00

-But lovely.

-Airy.

0:38:000:38:02

Ceilings, more beams.

0:38:020:38:04

Fantastic. Brilliant.

0:38:040:38:06

Full of character, cosy, warm, beams...

0:38:060:38:10

Yeah, we wanted a big master bedroom and you've got it. Tick!

0:38:100:38:14

Great, this is music to my ears!

0:38:140:38:16

Actually, just to top it off as well,

0:38:160:38:18

we've got an en suite behind us in here.

0:38:180:38:20

Just finish us off nicely.

0:38:200:38:23

Why don't we wander outside,

0:38:230:38:24

and then if you could start to think about the price, please.

0:38:240:38:27

We're doing that again?

0:38:270:38:29

We're there, we're at that point.

0:38:290:38:31

Outside, there's a communal courtyard,

0:38:340:38:36

as well as a private south-facing garden

0:38:360:38:38

with traditional Cornish stone hedging.

0:38:380:38:40

And patio seating located off the main reception.

0:38:400:38:44

The property also comes with its own garage

0:38:440:38:47

and a car port with log store.

0:38:470:38:49

Is this big enough for you?

0:38:500:38:52

-Yes.

-In garden terms, yes.

0:38:520:38:54

I mean, inevitably, I'd say if there was a bit more garden,

0:38:540:38:56

that would be nice.

0:38:560:38:58

But we understand it's all about compromise.

0:38:580:39:00

The house more than makes up for the garden.

0:39:000:39:03

The house is amazing. Amazing feature in itself, isn't it?

0:39:030:39:06

I'm getting a good feeling about you two in this one.

0:39:060:39:08

-It's nice.

-I love this house.

0:39:080:39:10

But I do need to know what do you think it's on the market for.

0:39:100:39:13

I think this house is on the market for £735,000.

0:39:130:39:18

I'm just thinking it must be close to our budget.

0:39:180:39:21

-I'm going to hit 650.

-650?

0:39:210:39:24

OK, so, your budget was 750,000.

0:39:240:39:27

Well, I'm very happy to say that, Nick,

0:39:270:39:29

you're not paying for the drinks in the pub later,

0:39:290:39:31

because you're actually bang on.

0:39:310:39:33

It's on the market for £650,000.

0:39:330:39:36

Wow!

0:39:360:39:37

That's... That's very good news.

0:39:390:39:41

I'm still smiling. You're smiling a hell of a lot.

0:39:410:39:44

Well, I'm sure this is a house you want to go back and take some time

0:39:440:39:47

-to look around again, isn't it?

-It certainly is.

-Absolutely.

0:39:470:39:50

Off you go, take your time. Come and find me when you're ready.

0:39:500:39:52

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-Lead on.

0:39:520:39:56

Well, as house tours go,

0:39:560:39:58

it just doesn't get better than that, does it?

0:39:580:40:00

At £100,000 below budget,

0:40:000:40:03

this period barn conversion seems to have won them over.

0:40:030:40:07

It has...

0:40:070:40:09

I have an idea for this room.

0:40:180:40:20

I'm going to turn this into a girl cave.

0:40:200:40:22

-Do they have that sort of thing?

-Maybe it's the first.

0:40:220:40:25

This could be the very first girl cave.

0:40:250:40:27

OK, I suppose I can't argue with that. Mine's bigger than yours.

0:40:270:40:30

THEY LAUGH

0:40:300:40:32

We might have to swap, then.

0:40:320:40:34

For me, it's the best house that I've seen

0:40:340:40:38

in six months of searching.

0:40:380:40:41

I got emotional coming in here because it is such a stunning room.

0:40:410:40:47

It's breathtaking.

0:40:470:40:48

It's a kitchen and yet it could be a great hall

0:40:480:40:54

with a kitchen, dining room, entrance, everything.

0:40:540:40:57

I've never seen a kitchen with so much character.

0:40:570:41:01

Overall, I'm really encouraged.

0:41:010:41:03

I think it's a lovely place.

0:41:030:41:05

It's in a fantastic location.

0:41:050:41:07

It ticks...

0:41:070:41:09

virtually all boxes.

0:41:090:41:11

I think this barn could definitely be my Cornish home.

0:41:110:41:15

Our Cornish home.

0:41:150:41:16

I'm sorry to drag you away but we do still have the Mystery House to go,

0:41:210:41:24

-you know.

-Well, one more.

0:41:240:41:27

-Come on.

-OK.

0:41:270:41:28

Cornwall boasts a truly magical coastline.

0:41:340:41:37

With over 400 beaches accessible by foot,

0:41:370:41:40

the county is a beachcomber's paradise,

0:41:400:41:43

and many rocky headlands make it a good spot for one treasure in

0:41:430:41:46

particular. Sea glass.

0:41:460:41:49

Smoothed and frosted by sand and sea,

0:41:490:41:52

broken glass that was once rubbish

0:41:520:41:54

is now a resource for artists such as Johnny Fuller.

0:41:540:41:57

I've come to meet him at his home and studio in Falmouth.

0:41:570:42:01

So, talk to me about sea glass, then.

0:42:010:42:04

Where is it found?

0:42:040:42:05

Well, it all...

0:42:050:42:08

comes from the bottling industry, mainly. Ended up in the sea.

0:42:080:42:11

Sometimes it could be cargo spills.

0:42:110:42:13

Generally, it's our littering which ends up in the ocean.

0:42:130:42:17

And it gets tumbled in the sand and it comes out with these lovely,

0:42:170:42:20

smooth shapes. And there's something very tactile about them all.

0:42:200:42:23

They're completely smooth.

0:42:230:42:25

Cos I can remember vividly as a child collecting this on the beach

0:42:250:42:28

and thinking it was treasure, my mum told me it was treasure.

0:42:280:42:31

How did your love affair with it first start?

0:42:310:42:33

From an early age, I always collected it.

0:42:330:42:36

We used to have it around the house in jars and pots.

0:42:360:42:38

Over the years, I collected so much,

0:42:380:42:40

I wanted to put it to a creative use.

0:42:400:42:42

This is why I started making pictures.

0:42:420:42:44

Johnny completed his Masters at the Royal College of Art in London

0:42:460:42:50

but returned to Cornwall to raise his family.

0:42:500:42:52

He tries to capture a love of the seascapes in pieces that are both

0:42:520:42:56

simple and striking.

0:42:560:42:59

A lot of what I make is based on the glass that I've found and where I

0:42:590:43:02

found it. So a lot of my inspiration is the tides.

0:43:020:43:06

So the circles obviously relate to the circular tide.

0:43:060:43:09

This particular colour is probably my favourite.

0:43:090:43:12

And is probably hardest to find.

0:43:120:43:14

You know, you get lots of white and brown and kind of bottle green

0:43:140:43:16

but not these kind of very subtle colours.

0:43:160:43:19

And are there better beaches than others to find it on?

0:43:190:43:22

Are some a treasure trove? Are there some good spots?

0:43:220:43:25

I've got some good spots but I'm not telling you where they are.

0:43:250:43:27

-Well, you will take me to one.

-I will do.

0:43:270:43:29

-Let me find the treasure of my childhood again.

-Yeah, absolutely.

0:43:290:43:32

Johnny may be keen to keep his hot spots under his hat

0:43:330:43:36

but if you've been paying attention,

0:43:360:43:38

you'll have a good idea of just where

0:43:380:43:40

this treasured hunting ground is.

0:43:400:43:42

And, of course, it always helps to bring a four-legged friend.

0:43:420:43:46

So, every day is a bring-your-dog-to-work day

0:43:460:43:48

-when you're doing this, isn't it?

-Absolutely.

0:43:480:43:50

Worldwide, the most common colour for sea glass is bottle green,

0:43:520:43:55

closely followed by frosted white.

0:43:550:43:58

Rarer finds include cobalt blue - only one in 500 pieces -

0:43:580:44:02

whilst pink accounts for just one in every 1,000 discoveries.

0:44:020:44:07

Straight away, I've spotted a bit.

0:44:070:44:09

A tiny bit. It's that amazing green colour.

0:44:090:44:12

It's really smooth. I often wonder where it's come from and how old is.

0:44:120:44:16

And how it got there.

0:44:160:44:17

How long do you reckon that's been in the sea, being bashed about,

0:44:170:44:20

-to get to that point?

-It could be years, I should think.

0:44:200:44:23

Sometimes, they have little letters and words on them,

0:44:230:44:25

and you can work out what bottling company it might have come from.

0:44:250:44:29

-I guess when you look...

-Look, there's a piece.

0:44:290:44:31

Oh, that's a lovely shape.

0:44:310:44:33

Oh, see, I can see a little theme happening there.

0:44:330:44:37

And is that how it happens?

0:44:370:44:38

Do you have the design first or do you find the glass,

0:44:380:44:41

find the colours, and then start to work it?

0:44:410:44:44

It's a bit of both, really. But I'm always looking for glass.

0:44:440:44:47

It doesn't always get used, but I can save it for another piece.

0:44:470:44:49

Do you take pleasure from the fact that you're recycling something?

0:44:490:44:53

Yeah, I do. I think it's nice to find it and remove it from the

0:44:530:44:57

beach, but then I'm reusing it in a kind of creative way, so...

0:44:570:45:00

One of the oldest man-made materials,

0:45:000:45:03

the main ingredient in glass is silica, which comes from sand.

0:45:030:45:06

So, perhaps it's fitting that some of it finds its way back to our

0:45:060:45:09

beaches. A good time to go sea glass hunting is the first low tide after

0:45:090:45:14

a storm. And don't forget to look underneath the pebbles

0:45:140:45:17

because that's where it's often lurking.

0:45:170:45:20

I'm struggling, Johnny.

0:45:200:45:22

I'm not finding much, either.

0:45:220:45:24

Yeah, you just don't know day to day what you're going to find, really.

0:45:240:45:27

It's...all about luck, I think.

0:45:270:45:30

I've got a few small pieces.

0:45:300:45:31

-It's great to do, isn't it?

-It's great fun.

-It's really relaxing.

0:45:310:45:34

It's quite compulsive. An addictive hobby, really.

0:45:340:45:37

I mean, I get e-mails from people from Hawaii, Australia...

0:45:370:45:40

What other things could you do with them?

0:45:400:45:42

Quite a lot of people make jewellery out of them, rings,

0:45:420:45:44

embed them into rings.

0:45:440:45:45

Or you could just put them in a jar and put them on the window.

0:45:450:45:48

Do you know what I'm going to do with them?

0:45:480:45:50

I have a little boy who's going to love some pirate treasure.

0:45:500:45:53

So this is Mummy's pirate treasure.

0:45:530:45:55

Absolutely. You know that's a stone there, don't you?

0:45:550:45:57

It's not, it's pirate treasure, Johnny! Come on, don't ruin it.

0:45:570:46:00

There are some members of your family we

0:46:040:46:06

-haven't talked about properly. The dogs!

-The dogs.

0:46:060:46:09

Yes, our fur babies.

0:46:090:46:11

You call them fur babies, love it.

0:46:110:46:13

So, finding the right place for them is important?

0:46:130:46:15

It is, very much so.

0:46:150:46:17

That's the beauty of having dogs, really.

0:46:170:46:19

You can take full advantage of the countryside.

0:46:190:46:22

When it comes to walks and exercise, dogs give you a good excuse,

0:46:220:46:25

that's for sure.

0:46:250:46:26

For our mystery offering,

0:46:280:46:30

we're heading to the hamlet of Pont-By-Fowey.

0:46:300:46:33

Just under two miles away is the ancient fishing village of Polruan.

0:46:330:46:37

Known for its boat-building heritage,

0:46:370:46:40

it's located on the banks of the Fowey Estuary.

0:46:400:46:43

A regular ferry takes five to ten minutes

0:46:430:46:45

and is still the fastest way to and from the other side of the water.

0:46:450:46:49

There are facilities here, including a grocery shop and cafes.

0:46:500:46:54

But we're two miles north-east

0:46:540:46:55

along a wooded creek that feeds into the Fowey Estuary.

0:46:550:46:59

This is the Mystery House.

0:46:590:47:02

Wowee!

0:47:020:47:03

You've got National Trust woodland at the back,

0:47:030:47:05

and amazing views over the creek,

0:47:050:47:07

which is low at the moment but when that's in full flow,

0:47:070:47:10

-it looks beautiful.

-Sensational place, isn't it?

-What a spot.

0:47:100:47:13

It's amazing.

0:47:130:47:14

I know that your dogs are very important to you.

0:47:140:47:17

-They are.

-And the dogs are catered for here.

0:47:170:47:19

They have their very own dog room, complete with a dog-grooming spa.

0:47:190:47:24

Wow!

0:47:240:47:25

So you can bring them back off their muddy walks, stick them in there.

0:47:250:47:29

Wow, if the dogs were choosing, it's probably this one.

0:47:290:47:31

So, I bet you're intrigued, if nothing else, aren't you?

0:47:310:47:34

Very much. I'd love to see it.

0:47:340:47:36

-Shall we go and explore?

-Yes, please.

-Thank you.

0:47:360:47:38

The twist is that whilst our Mystery House caters to their canines with

0:47:410:47:45

its dog spa and woodland setting,

0:47:450:47:47

it doesn't come with the garden they've asked for.

0:47:470:47:50

Originally built in the 1970s from converted pig sheds

0:47:500:47:53

but later extended,

0:47:530:47:54

the property has been extensively renovated by the present owners.

0:47:540:47:59

Currently run as a holiday let and arranged over three levels,

0:47:590:48:03

we're starting on the top floor,

0:48:030:48:05

where the kitchen and living space

0:48:050:48:07

take full advantage of the home's creek-side setting.

0:48:070:48:10

So, this is the topsy-turvy living space.

0:48:130:48:17

Top of the house - nice, big open-plan space.

0:48:170:48:20

You really do get a panorama from here, don't you?

0:48:200:48:22

-In line with the trees.

-Yeah, it's a Mystery House, isn't it?

0:48:220:48:26

I mean, it's nicely done as well, isn't it? Lots of nice timbers.

0:48:260:48:29

-Poshest log cabin in the world here.

-It is like that, it is!

0:48:290:48:31

It seems like a place that shouldn't have a man cave.

0:48:310:48:35

Maybe it is a man cave. Maybe it's a man treehouse.

0:48:350:48:38

Let's take a walk through.

0:48:380:48:40

Let's just wander around cos there are some fantastic views,

0:48:400:48:43

and it's all about being outside on the deck,

0:48:430:48:45

enjoying being amongst the trees. So, let's just wander through here.

0:48:450:48:48

Just off the large, open-plan kitchen and dining area

0:48:500:48:53

is a treetop-level conservatory.

0:48:530:48:56

Now, I don't know if either of you are bird-watchers but if you are,

0:48:560:49:00

this is definitely the house to buy, isn't it?

0:49:000:49:02

-You'd be in paradise, wouldn't you?

-Gosh, I should think so.

0:49:020:49:05

-Can you imagine how it changes through the seasons?

-Yeah,

0:49:050:49:07

there's going to be so much flying around out there, that's for sure.

0:49:070:49:10

-An amazing location.

-It is, it is amazing.

0:49:100:49:13

-It's gobsmacking.

-I've never seen anything like it!

0:49:130:49:16

Is it the kind of house that you would like to come and stay in,

0:49:160:49:19

or the kind of house you would like to live in?

0:49:190:49:22

Hmm, that's a very good point,

0:49:220:49:26

because, for a holiday, I'd find this incredibly different.

0:49:260:49:32

I'm not quite sure, with the dogs...

0:49:320:49:36

that they would enjoy just running around the decking.

0:49:360:49:39

It's wow in its own way, isn't it?

0:49:390:49:41

We're going to wander through and look at the two bedrooms up here.

0:49:410:49:44

They are a good size. And I think we could just have a chat about how you

0:49:440:49:47

could reconfigure the space here just to make it work a bit more for

0:49:470:49:51

what the two of you need from your home. So, let's go and have a look.

0:49:510:49:54

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:49:540:49:55

So, some questions over how they may live day to day in this home,

0:49:570:50:02

but with a total of five bedrooms

0:50:020:50:04

arranged over two of the three floors,

0:50:040:50:06

there's certainly a lot of versatile space on offer.

0:50:060:50:09

On the floor below are three guest bedrooms.

0:50:090:50:12

There is a large double with dual aspect.

0:50:120:50:14

A second bedroom with a door out to a decked veranda,

0:50:140:50:18

and then the smallest bedroom on this floor is currently fitted

0:50:180:50:21

with bunk beds.

0:50:210:50:22

These are all served by a beautifully appointed bathroom,

0:50:220:50:25

featuring a roll-top bath, and a separate shower.

0:50:250:50:28

Back on the top floor,

0:50:290:50:30

two further bathrooms provide keen twitchers

0:50:300:50:33

with bathtub bird-watching,

0:50:330:50:35

and serve additional bedrooms.

0:50:350:50:37

A double again has treetop views, and direct access to the deck.

0:50:370:50:42

And then there's the fifth and final bedroom.

0:50:420:50:45

So, it's a good size, isn't it?

0:50:450:50:47

-Yes, very generous.

-Yes, it is a good size.

0:50:470:50:50

It's almost a shame, though, to have all this space used as bedrooms.

0:50:500:50:53

And I think what you could do, potentially, is take that wall down,

0:50:530:50:57

join the two bedrooms together to have a nice, big living space.

0:50:570:51:01

This could become a cosy, separate lounge.

0:51:010:51:04

-Good.

-Let's take a look outside because it is all about the decking,

0:51:040:51:08

and being part of the trees.

0:51:080:51:10

And start thinking about the price for me as well.

0:51:100:51:13

-It's a tough one.

-Lead on, Nick.

-I've no idea.

0:51:130:51:15

If Nick and Julie were to go with my plan of converting the bedrooms up

0:51:180:51:22

here, they could also use the current study on this top floor as

0:51:220:51:25

a spare guest room, as it comes with an en-suite shower.

0:51:250:51:29

Outside, for even more panoramic views,

0:51:290:51:32

there are decked areas on a variety of levels,

0:51:320:51:34

as well as a car port and parking.

0:51:340:51:37

But it's the woodland surroundings that are the real highlight here.

0:51:370:51:40

-It's a view and a half, isn't it?

-It certainly is.

0:51:420:51:45

Even on a cold, grey day like this, it's spectacular.

0:51:450:51:48

-It is.

-Of course, there isn't a traditional garden,

0:51:480:51:50

but you do have a lot of these lovely decked seating areas.

0:51:500:51:53

From a gardening point of view, there's not much of that to be done

0:51:530:51:56

cos it's just a garden naturally all around you.

0:51:560:51:58

You wouldn't have to mow the lawn on a Sunday, would you?

0:51:580:52:00

-Look on the bright side!

-Certainly wouldn't.

0:52:000:52:02

There are advantages to that.

0:52:020:52:03

Now, I'm going to put you on the spot.

0:52:030:52:05

I'm going to ask you what you think this property is on the market for.

0:52:050:52:09

I'm going to have a bit of a stab in the dark, to be frank, Julie,

0:52:090:52:12

because I've never been anywhere like this before. So...

0:52:120:52:15

-700?

-OK.

0:52:150:52:16

For the uniqueness, 725, I think.

0:52:180:52:22

OK. That's interesting.

0:52:220:52:23

You're both quite close to budget. You're both wrong.

0:52:230:52:27

It is under budget.

0:52:270:52:29

By an AWFUL LOT more than the two of you have just said.

0:52:290:52:32

It's on the market for £545,000.

0:52:320:52:36

-OK!

-Really?!

0:52:360:52:38

I think it's rather a bargain.

0:52:380:52:40

I think we should buy it and have a holiday let or something.

0:52:400:52:43

Why don't you go off and have a wander? Why don't you go and explore

0:52:430:52:46

the dog cave, your doggie-grooming parlour

0:52:460:52:49

-that's downstairs.

-We'd better go and do that, hadn't we?

-I think so.

0:52:490:52:52

-Come and find me.

-Thank you, Ginny. Thank you.

0:52:520:52:54

With a guide price a staggering £200,000 below budget,

0:52:540:52:59

this three-storey creek-side house has...

0:52:590:53:04

-Wow!

-Oh, my goodness!

0:53:090:53:11

Doggie heaven.

0:53:110:53:13

Extraordinary.

0:53:130:53:14

All set up and ready.

0:53:140:53:15

The Mystery House is so spectacular, so unique, such a fabulous setting,

0:53:180:53:23

I've never seen anything like it.

0:53:230:53:26

I think this house is an absolute gem,

0:53:260:53:28

and whoever owns it is doubtless extremely proud of it.

0:53:280:53:30

In terms of practicality, I think it's somewhat specialist.

0:53:300:53:35

As a home, I think probably there are a few impracticalities.

0:53:350:53:38

There are gardens and there's gardens outside everywhere,

0:53:380:53:42

but for us, with the dogs, it's not quite what we envisaged.

0:53:420:53:46

I would love to come and stay here often,

0:53:460:53:49

it would be an idyllic place to take holidays and long breaks in.

0:53:490:53:54

Even on a cold, wet day like this,

0:53:540:53:57

Cornwall is still such a magical place to be,

0:53:570:53:59

particularly when you're up here in the treetops. It's beautiful.

0:53:590:54:03

-You're done.

-We are. We are, Ginny.

0:54:050:54:08

And that's us done. House tours over.

0:54:080:54:10

-So, it's time for us to go and have a chat, I'm afraid. Come on.

-Gosh.

0:54:100:54:13

Well, we've certainly shown our escapees some unique

0:54:210:54:24

and quite contrasting properties on our search here in Cornwall.

0:54:240:54:28

But will one of them have hit the mark?

0:54:280:54:30

Let's go and find out. Apparently, there's a warm fire in there.

0:54:300:54:33

I need it.

0:54:330:54:34

Well, you two have found the cosiest spot in town to chat, haven't you?

0:54:370:54:40

-Certainly have.

-So, we've seen all the properties.

0:54:400:54:43

Has anything stood out for you?

0:54:430:54:44

Yes. For me, the barn conversion did stand out.

0:54:440:54:48

The proportion of the place, the position of the place.

0:54:480:54:51

-Just what we want.

-It was a stunning house.

0:54:510:54:55

It really was. It was everything that I could want in a house.

0:54:550:54:59

What about the others? Was there a second runner?

0:54:590:55:01

I think there's massive potential in the coastal property with the view.

0:55:010:55:05

Surprised as I was,

0:55:050:55:07

and probably somewhere I'd never even dreamt of going to look at,

0:55:070:55:10

I'd have to say it's still in my mind as a contender,

0:55:100:55:14

-albeit perhaps second.

-Yes, yeah.

0:55:140:55:17

It's a perfect example of do not judge a book by its cover.

0:55:170:55:21

-Because there was that view at the back.

-Such a surprise.

0:55:210:55:24

Well, that's brilliant news. I'm absolutely thrilled there

0:55:240:55:27

are two properties that have sparked an interest in you.

0:55:270:55:31

I've got to ask, what next?

0:55:310:55:33

What I'd like to do in particular, I think, is,

0:55:330:55:35

bearing in mind that the barn conversion did involve an amount of

0:55:350:55:38

share element, shall we say, I'd actually like to meet

0:55:380:55:41

our neighbours, to be frank.

0:55:410:55:43

I actually think if you're going to share something or other,

0:55:430:55:45

it's very important you make the effort to do that.

0:55:450:55:48

I think it's really important.

0:55:480:55:49

So you're going to go back and knock on the doors and say hello?

0:55:490:55:52

Quite possibly. I'm not frightened to do that.

0:55:520:55:54

It certainly is going to be one

0:55:540:55:56

that we're going back for a second viewing.

0:55:560:55:59

Is it too soon to talk about offers?

0:55:590:56:01

Um...

0:56:010:56:02

No. For me, it's not.

0:56:020:56:05

No, I don't think it's too soon. But I suppose I'm somebody that

0:56:050:56:09

wants to go away and put my head down and get up again another day,

0:56:090:56:12

and then think exactly what that would be.

0:56:120:56:15

I think I should leave you in this corner with the fire,

0:56:150:56:18

mulling it all over.

0:56:180:56:19

And we really hope that we've helped you find the home you're going to

0:56:190:56:23

start your new life together once again here in Cornwall.

0:56:230:56:26

On behalf of us both, just thank you for helping us try to achieve this.

0:56:260:56:31

You're a lovely couple and we wish you lots of luck.

0:56:310:56:33

Thank you. Thank you, Ginny.

0:56:330:56:34

Well, the weather might be wild,

0:56:390:56:40

but we've had a great week house-hunting here in Cornwall.

0:56:400:56:44

And once they've had a chance to meet the neighbours,

0:56:440:56:46

I really hope that that barn conversion becomes Nick and Julie's

0:56:460:56:49

new home here in the county that they clearly love so much.

0:56:490:56:54

Join me next time on Escape To The Country.

0:56:540:56:56

Julie and Nick returned to the barn conversion

0:56:580:57:01

and met with the neighbours. However,

0:57:010:57:03

they decided to put an offer on another property in Cornwall,

0:57:030:57:06

and it's been accepted.

0:57:060:57:08

We wish them all the best with their move.
