This impressive White Scout car

0:00:040:00:06

was built in 1943 during the Second World War

0:00:060:00:10

and is just part of one of the largest privately owned collections

0:00:100:00:13

of military equipment in the UK.

0:00:130:00:17

In just a moment, I will tell you where we are and why it has such

0:00:170:00:21

a special significance for where we are today.

0:00:210:00:24

Today, it's a love of the arts that is driving an imaginative twosome to

0:00:470:00:51

head south, and imaginations are allowed to run wild.

0:00:510:00:56

Simple, elegant, but functional.

0:00:560:00:59

-Yes.

-I thought he was talking about you for a minute there!

0:00:590:01:02

-LAUGHTER

-No.

0:01:020:01:05

And fortunately for our pair, when it comes to properties,

0:01:050:01:08

size doesn't matter.

0:01:080:01:10

Beams are rather nice.

0:01:100:01:11

Perhaps a little low, but we are only short.

0:01:110:01:13

Today I'm in Devon, at the

0:01:180:01:20

Cobbaton Combat Collection, which started off

0:01:200:01:23

as one man's schoolboy hobby and has grown to encompass over 50 military

0:01:230:01:29

vehicles and artillery pieces, as well as thousands of smaller items.

0:01:290:01:34

This Scout car behind me wears the colours of the local Royal Devon

0:01:340:01:38

Yeomanry Regiment based in nearby

0:01:380:01:41

Barnstable, and vehicles like this would

0:01:410:01:43

have followed the 2nd Battalion to Normandy for the D-Day landings.

0:01:430:01:48

Later on, I will be meeting the men behind this impressive collection

0:01:480:01:52

and seeing more of these magnificent machines.

0:01:520:01:55

The county of Devon sits in the South West of England.

0:01:570:02:00

It shares three county borders,

0:02:000:02:02

including Cornwall's, and meets the Bristol Channel to the north

0:02:020:02:06

with the English Channel to the south.

0:02:060:02:09

The southern coastline is dominated by both sandy beaches and fossil

0:02:090:02:12

cliffs, whilst the northern edge is characterised by sheltered coves,

0:02:120:02:16

fringed by rocky outcrops like those at Croyde and Woolacombe,

0:02:160:02:19

as well as the dramatic dunes on display at Saunton Sands.

0:02:190:02:23

Meeting the ocean in North Devon is Exmoor National Park,

0:02:240:02:27

which spills into neighbouring Somerset.

0:02:270:02:30

The 267 miles of hills here are home to wild Exmoor ponies,

0:02:320:02:36

of which there are fewer than 1,000 found throughout the world.

0:02:360:02:40

Moving inland, the historic market town of Barnstaple is the social

0:02:410:02:45

centre of North Devon and was an important trading centre

0:02:450:02:48

for wool and pottery in the 16th and 17th centuries.

0:02:480:02:51

In fact, Barnstable pottery has been found in archaeological excavations

0:02:530:02:57

as far away as Maryland in the USA.

0:02:570:03:00

So, with its natural beauty and quaint villages,

0:03:020:03:05

where pastel-coloured cottages are topped with thatched roofs,

0:03:050:03:08

Devon is a county that showcases England at its very best.

0:03:080:03:12

With miles of gorgeous coastline and wild moorlands that appeal to

0:03:160:03:20

tourists and locals alike,

0:03:200:03:22

you'd expect Devon to be an expensive place to live,

0:03:220:03:25

yet the average price of a detached

0:03:250:03:28

property here is only around £13,000 above the national figure.

0:03:280:03:33

Now, along with all this natural beauty,

0:03:330:03:35

one of the biggest draws for many people is the famous

0:03:350:03:39

Devon cream tea,

0:03:390:03:40

which is estimated to contribute

0:03:400:03:43

around £85 million a year to the local economy.

0:03:430:03:47

But after all the activities today's buyers

0:03:470:03:50

are planning with this move, will they have time

0:03:500:03:53

for this delicious delicacy? Let's find out.

0:03:530:03:56

Former art teacher Maggie and her

0:03:570:03:59

retired IT professional husband Martin

0:03:590:04:02

met at school and have been together for 46 years.

0:04:020:04:04

Maggie is very creative.

0:04:060:04:09

She is different to me in that she is a little less organised,

0:04:090:04:14

perhaps a little bit more of an artistic temperament, let me say...

0:04:140:04:18

..but we make a good couple.

0:04:190:04:21

Martin has got quite strong opinions, he can be very forceful,

0:04:220:04:27

but he also has a lot of charm.

0:04:270:04:30

After a lifetime of work,

0:04:320:04:33

they have decided to live the dream and leave the five-bedroom

0:04:330:04:37

Stockport semi they have shared for over 30 years.

0:04:370:04:39

As happy living in Stockport as we once were, we have both retired

0:04:400:04:45

so we don't have any particular reason to be

0:04:450:04:47

hanging around this area.

0:04:470:04:48

We live on a major road, which is busy.

0:04:480:04:52

And although it is not particularly noisy,

0:04:520:04:53

it does mean that we do not really have much of a community

0:04:530:04:56

on this stretch of the road.

0:04:560:04:58

It will be a terrible shame to leave the house but there are times

0:04:580:05:01

when you just have to move on.

0:05:010:05:02

And this doesn't give us, really, the life that we aspire to

0:05:020:05:07

going forward, I think.

0:05:070:05:08

And after visiting the region,

0:05:110:05:12

they have decided it's Devon that they would like to call home.

0:05:120:05:15

It has got the coastline, I love the coast, we want countryside.

0:05:150:05:22

It is warmer down there and I am getting a bit old,

0:05:220:05:25

so I don't really want to be enduring really cold winters.

0:05:250:05:29

So Devon seems to offer all the things we really like.

0:05:290:05:33

And when they move south,

0:05:330:05:35

they are keen to devote more time to their hobbies, both outdoors and in.

0:05:350:05:40

When I retired, just under two years ago,

0:05:400:05:43

I started to do some things that I had not done that I have always

0:05:430:05:47

wanted to. I took up pottery and I take a pottery class once a week.

0:05:470:05:52

I've always been interested in craft things so I took up peg looming.

0:05:530:05:58

And at the moment I tend to do peg looming in the winter.

0:05:580:06:02

I am a felt maker...

0:06:040:06:05

..but I am also a fine artist and I want to paint more.

0:06:070:06:11

So I would like to be able to go out with my paints and sit on a hillside

0:06:110:06:15

in Devon, and paint the sea and paint the things I can see around me.

0:06:150:06:19

So with their heads full of ideas, this creative couple can't wait

0:06:200:06:24

to get stuck in to their new country life.

0:06:240:06:27

From our perspective, when we are moving to an area

0:06:270:06:30

we want to feel part of that area, that community,

0:06:300:06:35

get engaged locally with people, with activities.

0:06:350:06:40

I think, when we finally do it,

0:06:400:06:42

then that will be the start of something new,

0:06:420:06:45

but also the end of a chapter and we will be able to close that book

0:06:450:06:49

and open the new book.

0:06:490:06:52

Maggie and Martin have decided

0:06:540:06:55

to plant their arty roots in the northern half of Devon,

0:06:550:06:58

so that's where we are focusing our search.

0:06:580:07:01

Ahead of our quest to find them their dream home,

0:07:010:07:04

I am meeting them in the county to discuss the finer details of

0:07:040:07:07

their requirements.

0:07:070:07:09

Martin and Maggie, welcome to Devon, the two of you.

0:07:090:07:12

-BOTH:

-Thank you very much.

0:07:120:07:14

Does Stockport feel a long way away for you now?

0:07:140:07:16

It certainly does feel a long way away.

0:07:160:07:18

Having made the break and made the decision, now this is the new life.

0:07:180:07:24

So you both love this county but does it feel like home?

0:07:240:07:27

It does. As soon as we got here to start looking around,

0:07:270:07:32

we just felt really comfortable.

0:07:320:07:33

Partial to a cream tea, I hope?

0:07:330:07:35

-Oh, yes.

-Unfortunately.

0:07:350:07:38

Me too.

0:07:380:07:39

There is a sense of urgency with this house-hunt

0:07:390:07:42

because I believe you got some good news yesterday.

0:07:420:07:45

We have exchanged contracts. The downside, slightly,

0:07:450:07:49

is that we have a completion date, which is only two weeks away.

0:07:490:07:53

So, we are homeless in two weeks' time.

0:07:530:07:57

Right.

0:07:570:07:58

I hope there is going to be something really good this week.

0:07:580:08:02

Nothing like being homeless in two weeks' time

0:08:020:08:04

to really focus the mind with our houses.

0:08:040:08:06

Yes, that's right.

0:08:060:08:08

What is it that you are after?

0:08:080:08:09

We want somewhere that is on the outskirts of a village,

0:08:090:08:13

because we'd like people to talk to.

0:08:130:08:15

We also want somewhere where we can have a studio.

0:08:150:08:18

-So you're after a workshop, for both of you, is that right?

-That's right.

0:08:180:08:22

So a workshop is up there as a priority,

0:08:220:08:24

but tell me about the actual house you are after, as well.

0:08:240:08:27

We want a garden, somewhere I can grow vegetables.

0:08:270:08:30

We want it to be light and airy. We have had a big Victorian house,

0:08:300:08:34

we don't want to be too claustrophobic moving to a smaller house.

0:08:340:08:37

We are fairly relaxed about styles.

0:08:370:08:41

We would like a bit of quirkiness.

0:08:410:08:45

How many bedrooms?

0:08:450:08:47

Three would be good.

0:08:470:08:48

What about views?

0:08:480:08:51

Views are important. It is such a beautiful county,

0:08:510:08:53

it would be a shame not to be able to see it from the house.

0:08:530:08:56

Hypothetically, if one or two of the properties don't have a workshop

0:08:560:09:00

already done, are you happy to take on a little bit

0:09:000:09:03

of a project and build one yourselves?

0:09:030:09:05

Yes, we would certainly do that.

0:09:050:09:07

We appreciate it is not always possible to find something suitable.

0:09:070:09:11

So, what is our top budget? Remind us again what we're working with.

0:09:110:09:16

Ideally it's going to be 350,000, but there is a bit of wiggle room.

0:09:170:09:24

If we can find somewhere with a good studio,

0:09:240:09:27

so we don't have to spend a huge amount of money on that,

0:09:270:09:29

I think we could probably run up to

0:09:290:09:32

around 380,000 for the right property.

0:09:320:09:34

Well, we do have some splendid homes to show you.

0:09:340:09:38

We know time is of the essence, so shall we get started?

0:09:380:09:41

-Let's go.

-Come on, then.

0:09:410:09:42

For their top budget of £380,000,

0:09:450:09:48

Maggie and Martin want a character home with three bedrooms.

0:09:480:09:51

The outside space is important and should offer options to grow fruit

0:09:510:09:56

and vegetables, as well as a workshop in which

0:09:560:09:58

to base their hobbies.

0:09:580:09:59

Location-wise, they would like a place

0:09:590:10:01

where they can get stuck in to the local community.

0:10:010:10:04

The properties we have chosen will provide Maggie and Martin with a

0:10:050:10:08

variety of styles, but it will only be after they have seen each one

0:10:080:10:12

that its price will be revealed.

0:10:120:10:14

The final visit to the Mystery House will require them to open their

0:10:140:10:17

creative minds but, if they do,

0:10:170:10:20

I think they will be very pleasantly surprised.

0:10:200:10:22

So, this is it now.

0:10:270:10:30

Got to search for this perfect home,

0:10:300:10:31

or as close to perfect as we can get it.

0:10:310:10:34

How long have you both been planning this move?

0:10:350:10:38

We've been talking about it for the last 20 years.

0:10:380:10:42

But planning it, probably about six months ago.

0:10:420:10:47

It's getting tantalisingly close now you've sold your home.

0:10:470:10:51

Yes, it's getting slightly scarily close but it's

0:10:510:10:54

so exciting as well.

0:10:540:10:55

We're heading to the small town of North Tawton in mid Devon.

0:10:590:11:02

It has a villagey feel with its centre providing all

0:11:030:11:07

the essentials and more, and it's surrounded by gentle hills.

0:11:070:11:11

There's plenty here to bring the community together, including

0:11:110:11:14

the town hall that gave North Tawton its town status.

0:11:140:11:17

At its heart is St Peter's Church, whose statuesque tower

0:11:190:11:22

is its oldest feature, dating back to the 13th century.

0:11:220:11:26

Standing in the shadow of the church is our first offering.

0:11:280:11:31

Thought to have been built in the late 1700s or early 1800s,

0:11:310:11:35

this charming stone cottage is topped with a slate roof.

0:11:350:11:40

Right. Interesting.

0:11:400:11:42

As you notice, it is semidetached.

0:11:420:11:45

-This little private road - you've got shared access to this road.

-OK.

0:11:450:11:48

So first impressions, Maggie?

0:11:480:11:51

It looks lovely. It really does.

0:11:510:11:53

Very traditional.

0:11:530:11:55

And a beautiful view with the church and everything here,

0:11:550:11:57

so, yes, fantastic.

0:11:570:12:00

Shall we step inside and start our first tour?

0:12:000:12:02

-Definitely.

-Yes, please.

0:12:020:12:04

-Follow me.

-Right.

0:12:040:12:05

The front door leads straight into a wide, bright entrance hall.

0:12:080:12:13

And to its left, the sitting room looks out to the front.

0:12:130:12:15

A stone fireplace houses an inviting wooden coal-burning stove.

0:12:170:12:21

Right, lovely.

0:12:220:12:23

This is lovely. Nice and cosy.

0:12:230:12:25

Yes, cosy is definitely the first word you'd use.

0:12:250:12:28

It's quite small but not claustrophobic at all.

0:12:280:12:33

This room is dominated by the fireplace, isn't it?

0:12:330:12:36

-Oh, I can certainly see our winter evenings in front of that.

-Lovely.

0:12:360:12:40

That would work well.

0:12:400:12:42

A good start to our first room.

0:12:420:12:44

Next door, you've got the dining room.

0:12:440:12:46

I'm going to lead you through and show you the kitchen.

0:12:460:12:48

Lovely.

0:12:480:12:50

The sunny dining room is sandwiched between the sitting room

0:12:510:12:54

and the traditional L-shaped kitchen.

0:12:540:12:56

It's dual aspect and features a Butler sink.

0:12:560:12:59

You probably guessed this is an extension

0:13:010:13:03

because that would have been the outside wall.

0:13:030:13:06

Believed to have been done around the 1950s, this kitchen.

0:13:060:13:09

-Right.

-Yes, it does have that look.

0:13:090:13:11

It does. Do you like it?

0:13:110:13:13

I do quite like it, yes.

0:13:130:13:15

I could see this working OK for us.

0:13:150:13:17

If you look out of this window, you can see you've got your

0:13:170:13:21

vegetable plot there, all ready for the new seeds to go in.

0:13:210:13:24

-Is that something you are keen on doing?

-Yes.

0:13:240:13:27

But I'm going to take you upstairs next.

0:13:270:13:29

This charming cottage is delivering so far and upstairs is just as cosy.

0:13:290:13:34

There is a beautifully finished family bathroom and three bedrooms,

0:13:340:13:38

all with added character from their position in the eaves.

0:13:380:13:42

There is one to the rear which overlooks the side of the home.

0:13:420:13:45

Another overlooking the front.

0:13:460:13:48

And next to that is the master.

0:13:500:13:52

-Cosy again.

-Yes.

0:13:530:13:55

Cosy, yes.

0:13:550:13:57

But enough space for the two of you?

0:13:570:13:59

Yes, the bedroom is not really an issue for us in terms of space.

0:13:590:14:03

Of course, there are two sides to this property search.

0:14:030:14:06

There is the house, which we want you to love,

0:14:060:14:08

but I would say nearly as important is the workshop or the space

0:14:080:14:12

outside for the two of you.

0:14:120:14:14

So let's see how we're doing with this first property.

0:14:140:14:17

If you wouldn't mind leading the way. Thank you.

0:14:170:14:19

Outside, the enclosed garden extends to around 100 feet,

0:14:230:14:27

and is divided into vegetable plots

0:14:270:14:29

and lawn with the added bonus of two outbuildings ideal for storage.

0:14:290:14:33

But when it comes to hobbies, there is even more.

0:14:330:14:36

It's a lovely little garden.

0:14:370:14:39

-It's obviously a sun trap.

-It's pleasant, actually.

0:14:390:14:41

It's a very reasonable outside space to spend some time in.

0:14:410:14:45

-Good.

-It doesn't have fantastically wide views

0:14:450:14:49

but for a more central location it is actually very reasonable indeed.

0:14:490:14:54

Good. As you come out of the door you can see what looks like a garage.

0:14:540:14:58

The actual owners have converted into a workshop.

0:14:580:15:01

There is a wood burner in there.

0:15:010:15:02

So it's all kitted out, it's whether it's big enough for the two of you.

0:15:020:15:06

But I'll let you explore that on your own.

0:15:060:15:08

But there is a workshop there.

0:15:080:15:09

So let's see how you get on with the price.

0:15:090:15:12

Maggie, do you want to go first?

0:15:120:15:14

Erm...

0:15:140:15:16

I think I'm going to go 340,000.

0:15:160:15:19

OK.

0:15:190:15:20

Yes, I think we would have a reasonable amount to do here.

0:15:200:15:25

I would probably go a little bit less than that, actually -

0:15:250:15:27

I'd probably go closer to 325.

0:15:270:15:30

Well, you're both out with your estimates.

0:15:300:15:34

The actual asking price for this property is...

0:15:340:15:37

£275,000.

0:15:370:15:39

-Oh, wow.

-OK.

0:15:390:15:41

Well, that gives us a bit more scope.

0:15:410:15:44

-It does.

-Exactly. Just over £100,000 left over.

0:15:440:15:49

We could get a nice workshop for that, couldn't we?

0:15:490:15:51

Yes, I like your thinking there, I like your thinking.

0:15:510:15:55

What about you, Maggie?

0:15:550:15:56

How do you feel about that price?

0:15:560:15:57

I think the price is fantastic.

0:15:570:15:59

It really does make you realise the potential

0:15:590:16:02

we could have to live here.

0:16:020:16:04

We could do so much stuff.

0:16:040:16:06

That's a very, very good starting point, I think.

0:16:060:16:09

OK, well, I'm going to send you off. I know where you'll go first -

0:16:090:16:12

you're going to go and have a look at that workshop.

0:16:120:16:14

And check out the piece of land to the side of it cos you could put

0:16:140:16:17

-an additional building on there if you wanted to.

-OK.

0:16:170:16:19

We'll certainly have a look.

0:16:190:16:20

-Be my guest. Thank you.

-Thanks.

0:16:200:16:22

Well, I think a really, really good start.

0:16:250:16:28

Way under their budget - £100,000 under their budget.

0:16:280:16:32

It is quite a small property - they're used to a larger house -

0:16:320:16:35

but it is a great indicator of what they can get in this

0:16:350:16:38

part of the county.

0:16:380:16:39

Coming in at a generous amount under Martin

0:16:410:16:43

and Maggie's top budget,

0:16:430:16:45

this semidetached 19th-century stone cottage offers

0:16:450:16:48

plenty of character along with three bedrooms, a multifunctional

0:16:480:16:53

garden, a workshop, and it sits in the heart of the community.

0:16:530:16:57

-Interesting.

-Yes.

0:17:000:17:02

It's not a bad space.

0:17:020:17:04

I could see it working for you.

0:17:040:17:06

Yes, it's nice and light and airy.

0:17:060:17:08

Yes, I'm not sure I fancy putting a kiln in here, though.

0:17:080:17:12

No, with the potter's wheel.

0:17:120:17:14

With the wheel as well, I think we would struggle.

0:17:140:17:18

-We be fighting for space, wouldn't we?

-Yes, I think so.

0:17:180:17:20

I think it's a really lovely little house.

0:17:230:17:25

It's quirky and has lots of character.

0:17:250:17:29

It's a very welcoming house.

0:17:290:17:31

I think it's a nice property.

0:17:310:17:33

With a little bit of work it could be very, very nice indeed.

0:17:330:17:36

-All right?

-Indeed.

0:17:380:17:40

Not a bad first property.

0:17:400:17:43

-Ready to hit the road?

-Oh, yes.

0:17:430:17:44

-I think so.

-Good, come on, then.

0:17:440:17:46

Devon's beautiful backdrop has provided inspiration to countless

0:17:530:17:57

craftspeople and has also proved a draw for our creative couple.

0:17:570:18:01

They are excited about indulging in their passion for the arts within

0:18:010:18:05

its boundaries.

0:18:050:18:06

They have come to meet Marek Drzazga,

0:18:060:18:08

who was also drawn to the county over 20 years ago

0:18:080:18:11

to base his bespoke architectural pottery business.

0:18:110:18:15

With 45 years as a potter behind him, he's happy to share his

0:18:150:18:19

love of the art and the skill he's acquired with Maggie and Martin.

0:18:190:18:23

They are meeting him at his studio on the outskirts of the village of

0:18:230:18:25

Chittlehamholt, south of Barnstaple.

0:18:250:18:29

What a beautiful place!

0:18:290:18:30

Fantastic. What got you into pottery in the first place?

0:18:300:18:35

Probably as a six-year-old kid

0:18:350:18:38

in Cookham on Thames, seeing dragon finials.

0:18:380:18:41

Wow.

0:18:410:18:42

I was always interested in

0:18:420:18:44

architecture and then when I discovered it at

0:18:440:18:46

art college in the early 20s, that was it.

0:18:460:18:49

Finials are designed to decorate the apex of a gabled roof.

0:18:510:18:55

Creations such as Marek's finely crafted examples were popular

0:18:550:18:59

in Gothic and Victorian times but date back much further.

0:18:590:19:03

What do you particularly love about clay and pottery?

0:19:030:19:06

Everything. I just immerse myself in it, I love it.

0:19:060:19:09

Absolutely love it.

0:19:090:19:10

And is there a strong sort of community down here of potters

0:19:100:19:14

and craftspeople generally?

0:19:140:19:16

You would find in the West Country,

0:19:160:19:18

being a sort of out-flung area, people work

0:19:180:19:22

together more closely than in town so there is a strong community,

0:19:220:19:26

arts community, and it works very, very well.

0:19:260:19:30

Although Marek's pottery is created in the Devonshire

0:19:300:19:32

countryside, the consistency of the local clay isn't suitable

0:19:320:19:36

for his work, so it is sourced from Stoke-on-Trent.

0:19:360:19:39

Unlike Martin's creations, Marek's designs are on a larger scale.

0:19:390:19:44

His motto is, "If you can imagine it, we can make it."

0:19:440:19:48

The sorts of things that you do - it's more of an architectural

0:19:480:19:52

-ceramics, really, isn't it?

-Absolutely.

0:19:520:19:55

It is basically

0:19:550:19:57

clay work for buildings -

0:19:570:20:00

ridge tiles, chimney pots, finials and bricks.

0:20:000:20:04

Marek has built up a global client list

0:20:060:20:08

and makes each detailed piece to order.

0:20:080:20:10

He is currently working on a collection of 16th-century-inspired

0:20:100:20:14

chimney pots for a private client.

0:20:140:20:16

When assembled, they stand at five feet tall.

0:20:160:20:20

He uses a combination of traditional methods with his own techniques

0:20:200:20:23

and is showing Maggie and Martin how to craft the top

0:20:230:20:26

of the monumental pots.

0:20:260:20:29

The method I've developed, basically I call it skimming,

0:20:290:20:33

and this is turning a round object into an octagonal.

0:20:330:20:37

It is basically pulling a template

0:20:370:20:41

through the form.

0:20:410:20:43

-OK.

-And skimming away...

0:20:430:20:47

..the clay. And progress all the way around, lightly at first.

0:20:490:20:54

Marek uses water to keep the clay lubricated.

0:20:580:21:00

After a short period of time, you actually get a very sharp edge

0:21:020:21:07

on the whole thing.

0:21:070:21:09

So, if you want to give it a shot.

0:21:090:21:12

Yes, please, because I'm all togged up.

0:21:120:21:14

Right, there you go. Over to you.

0:21:140:21:17

So, if you keep it firmly down and pull it towards you.

0:21:180:21:24

That's right. Just lightly with that and pull toward yourself.

0:21:240:21:27

If you get it locked down at the bottom, pull towards yourself,

0:21:270:21:31

nice and steady. Absolutely perfect.

0:21:310:21:34

Architectural ceramics have varied over the centuries

0:21:340:21:39

and presumably that'll mean choosing different clays,

0:21:390:21:43

different techniques and so on.

0:21:430:21:45

Not so much clays, more the various techniques.

0:21:450:21:50

-The techniques will come about because of the different shapes.

-OK.

0:21:500:21:54

So certain things, like in Edwardian times you would have more

0:21:540:21:57

rectangular, octagonal chimney pots,

0:21:570:22:02

as opposed to the round or whatever,

0:22:020:22:04

and so you have to make it differently.

0:22:040:22:07

-Can I have a go, then?

-All right, then.

0:22:070:22:09

-Thank you.

-Change places.

0:22:090:22:10

Right, you stand on that side and laugh at him!

0:22:100:22:14

OK, so holding on to here?

0:22:140:22:16

That's it. Get locked in,

0:22:160:22:18

pull through and then keep pressing it down.

0:22:180:22:21

What kind of clay is this?

0:22:210:22:23

That is buff clay -

0:22:230:22:25

15% of kiln-dried sand added to it.

0:22:250:22:28

Buff clay refers to the finished colour, which is a light cream.

0:22:290:22:34

Keep pressing down.

0:22:340:22:35

You start to get a feel for it after a while, don't you?

0:22:390:22:42

After around 15 minutes of sculpting,

0:22:420:22:44

the chimney top is a neat octagonal shape.

0:22:440:22:47

Marek takes the reins again for the final stage.

0:22:470:22:50

See the master at work.

0:22:520:22:54

We love seeing true craftsmen.

0:22:560:22:59

Right, there we go. I think you've got the gist of it.

0:22:590:23:01

-Absolutely.

-There are two put

0:23:010:23:03

-together and that is what they should look like.

-Wow, fantastic.

0:23:030:23:08

That is brilliant. Thank you so much for your time,

0:23:080:23:10

-that has been tremendous.

-My pleasure.

-Thank you.

0:23:100:23:14

Full of inspiration, Maggie and Martin are even more

0:23:140:23:17

determined to find a new place to call home,

0:23:170:23:19

where they can revel in their passions.

0:23:190:23:21

Our Devonshire property search is on its way to the village of

0:23:250:23:28

Morchard Bishop in the heartland of mid-Devon.

0:23:280:23:31

The village is overlooked by pastures green

0:23:310:23:33

and dominated by the tower of the 16th-century church

0:23:330:23:36

of St Mary's which, at 95 feet tall,

0:23:360:23:39

stands almost 600 feet above sea level.

0:23:390:23:43

There is a great sense of community here and a good selection of places

0:23:430:23:46

to get to know the locals, including a popular dining pub.

0:23:460:23:50

The car park here welcomes the Post Office van,

0:23:500:23:52

which visits weekly after the village Post Office closed.

0:23:520:23:56

Close to the centre of the village,

0:23:560:23:58

we find this rather interesting property.

0:23:580:24:01

Thought to date back to the 18th century,

0:24:010:24:03

it sits neatly amongst its neighbours.

0:24:030:24:05

Right, let's see what you make of this little offering.

0:24:070:24:12

-Oh, wow!

-Oh, this is interesting, isn't it?

0:24:120:24:14

-Yes.

-Fascinating.

0:24:140:24:16

This property used to be a piggery.

0:24:160:24:19

Now the reason this is yellow is

0:24:190:24:21

because it is actually part of this property.

0:24:210:24:23

This used to be the outside toilet

0:24:230:24:25

for that house and that one had one next door.

0:24:250:24:28

So you own the courtyard but they do have access and right of way.

0:24:280:24:32

OK.

0:24:320:24:34

Sum up this property for me, will you, before we step inside?

0:24:340:24:38

-Different.

-OK.

0:24:380:24:41

I was going to use the word quaint, but I properly shouldn't.

0:24:410:24:45

You can. We like that, quaint and different.

0:24:450:24:47

Right, let's see what you make of the inside.

0:24:470:24:50

This unconventional attached cottage is set out in an L-shape.

0:24:540:24:58

It has been tastefully renovated and the front door,

0:24:580:25:01

set beyond the courtyard,

0:25:010:25:02

leads us into the house where we find a snug dining room.

0:25:020:25:05

We're heading into the right-hand wing of the property.

0:25:070:25:10

This is really what I wanted to start off with, the kitchen.

0:25:100:25:14

It's lovely. I really like it.

0:25:140:25:15

It's not huge but it's got everything.

0:25:150:25:18

It's really nicely done.

0:25:180:25:20

-Beautifully finished, I have to say.

-When we were outside,

0:25:200:25:22

-you wouldn't think there was this much space, would you?

-No.

0:25:220:25:26

No, it's very deceptive.

0:25:260:25:27

-To your taste?

-Yes.

-Very much so.

-Lovely.

0:25:290:25:31

Simple, elegant, but functional.

0:25:310:25:34

I thought he was talking about you for a minute there!

0:25:340:25:37

THEY LAUGH

0:25:370:25:39

-No!

-Right, I'm going to keep going.

0:25:390:25:41

Heading out of the kitchen,

0:25:450:25:46

we're crossing through the dining room to a large sitting room with

0:25:460:25:49

windows to the back garden.

0:25:490:25:52

This is nice.

0:25:520:25:54

It is. This definitely counts as cosy, I would say.

0:25:540:25:57

Yeah. I can see you two sitting in this sitting room.

0:25:570:26:01

I think it's big enough to be properly usable

0:26:010:26:04

but still small enough to be cosy, even with the beams,

0:26:040:26:07

which bring the ceiling height down a little bit.

0:26:070:26:10

It doesn't feel oppressive or claustrophobic.

0:26:100:26:13

I do like it.

0:26:130:26:14

It is lovely. It's a really nice house.

0:26:140:26:17

Well, I've shown you the downstairs.

0:26:170:26:19

-I'm going to take us upstairs and see what you make of the bedrooms.

-OK.

0:26:190:26:23

Above the dining and sitting rooms are three bedrooms,

0:26:240:26:27

all served by a smart family bathroom.

0:26:270:26:30

There's a double with a sloped ceiling and a skylight,

0:26:300:26:33

another with a feature window to the front,

0:26:330:26:36

and the master benefits from garden views.

0:26:360:26:39

It's beautiful. It really is lovely.

0:26:400:26:42

So far, so good, I think.

0:26:440:26:45

Yeah. You happy?

0:26:450:26:47

I would be definitely very happy living in this sort of space,

0:26:470:26:50

so long as we have got some of the other things that we need.

0:26:500:26:53

Yes. So far, so good.

0:26:530:26:55

Let's see what we make of the

0:26:550:26:57

outside space and opportunities there.

0:26:570:27:01

Right, OK.

0:27:010:27:02

Outside, an arc of steps leads up from the house

0:27:040:27:07

to landscaped gardens, which include a large patio and a small pond,

0:27:070:27:11

a summer house and shed,

0:27:110:27:13

plus excellent views across neighbouring countryside.

0:27:130:27:17

I think quite a large garden,

0:27:190:27:21

considering from the front of the house it doesn't look like you have

0:27:210:27:24

-anything, does it?

-Exactly, that's right.

0:27:240:27:26

It's quite deceiving.

0:27:260:27:28

I can see your eyes searching.

0:27:280:27:30

They will have to search, I'm afraid,

0:27:300:27:32

because I don't have a workshop to show you, but this land is flat.

0:27:320:27:37

You could potentially build your own one here.

0:27:370:27:40

Yes. I think that's a possibility, certainly.

0:27:400:27:44

We've always felt that if there was the land available and it didn't

0:27:440:27:47

compromise the garden, that would be the right thing to do.

0:27:470:27:51

So, I'm now wondering if we can put a price on this former piggery with

0:27:510:27:56

its wonderful view and garden.

0:27:560:27:58

My feeling is we're probably about the top of the budget,

0:27:580:28:03

plus obviously we need to build the studio,

0:28:030:28:06

so I would guess probably about 350.

0:28:060:28:08

-OK.

-I'm going to be cheeky and hope it's a bit less, and say 340.

0:28:080:28:15

-Are you really hoping?

-I'm hoping.

0:28:150:28:17

I like it when you're cheeky because you could actually be a little bit

0:28:170:28:21

cheekier. The asking price is offers in excess of

0:28:210:28:24

£250,000.

0:28:240:28:28

How luxurious would you like your workshop to be

0:28:280:28:31

with that spare money?

0:28:310:28:32

-Wow!

-That is stunning.

0:28:320:28:35

That is amazing, yes.

0:28:350:28:37

Yes, I think that is quite a surprise.

0:28:370:28:40

Do you fancy now being cheeky and

0:28:400:28:42

having another look around on your own?

0:28:420:28:44

Oh, yes, definitely.

0:28:440:28:45

I love that smile!

0:28:450:28:47

I love that smile.

0:28:470:28:49

Be my guest. Go and take another look around the property and then

0:28:490:28:52

come back out, and really study this area.

0:28:520:28:55

I'm sure you will be drawing up plans in no time.

0:28:550:28:57

I'm going to keep everything crossed.

0:28:570:28:59

-Off you go.

-Thank you. Off you go.

0:28:590:29:01

This 18th-century cottage has rung in at £130,000 below budget.

0:29:040:29:10

It's beautifully renovated,

0:29:100:29:12

is full of character and has three bedrooms.

0:29:120:29:15

There is a large garden with views, plus the option to build a great

0:29:150:29:18

workshop, and it lies close to the village centre.

0:29:180:29:21

This is a lovely little room.

0:29:230:29:25

This is nice, actually.

0:29:260:29:27

-I have to say, I like the little skylight over the bed.

-Yes.

0:29:270:29:30

Lie in bed and watch the stars.

0:29:300:29:32

Yes, I could see this working

0:29:330:29:35

as a very, very nice spare room, actually.

0:29:350:29:37

Yes. It is, it's lovely.

0:29:370:29:40

This house is absolutely beautiful.

0:29:400:29:42

It has been restored really sympathetically

0:29:420:29:45

and with a sense of style.

0:29:450:29:47

It is stunning. A really fabulous place.

0:29:470:29:49

It's quite a stunning property, I have to say.

0:29:510:29:53

A real surprise.

0:29:530:29:55

You can't tell from the outside what you're going to find and it has just

0:29:550:29:59

been so beautifully done.

0:29:590:30:01

I think I was almost speechless, which for me is very, very unusual.

0:30:010:30:06

I think the price of this house is absolutely astonishing.

0:30:060:30:10

It's got so much and so much has been done to it.

0:30:100:30:14

I love it.

0:30:140:30:15

Have you seen enough?

0:30:190:30:20

Yes. A lovely, lovely house.

0:30:200:30:22

-It really is beautiful.

-You said it was different and it was quaint.

0:30:220:30:25

It seems to have delivered on all of those, doesn't it?

0:30:250:30:28

-Yes.

-It's quite a surprise.

0:30:280:30:29

Good. We like to do that to you. Let's hit the road.

0:30:290:30:32

It's a new day in Devon and we are about to embark

0:30:420:30:45

on the next leg of our journey,

0:30:450:30:47

searching out a country paradise for Maggie and Martin from Stockport,

0:30:470:30:51

where they can live the good life and let their creative juices flow.

0:30:510:30:55

Armed with a top budget of £380,000,

0:30:550:30:58

we are tasked with finding a characterful home

0:30:580:31:01

that has a garden fit for

0:31:010:31:02

the green-fingered as well as an artist's workshop.

0:31:020:31:05

There is still our marvellous Mystery House to come.

0:31:050:31:09

I'm pretty much bowled over by this, I have to say.

0:31:090:31:12

-Are you?

-Yes.

-And I will be finding out how one pocket of Devon is

0:31:120:31:16

safeguarding military memorabilia that tells the tales of the brave

0:31:160:31:20

and victorious British Army during the Second World War.

0:31:200:31:24

It is an extraordinary experience, just to stand here.

0:31:240:31:27

Well, yesterday went rather well with Martin and Maggie,

0:31:320:31:36

although there is nothing like being homeless in two weeks' time to help

0:31:360:31:40

focus the mind!

0:31:400:31:41

Today, we are going to show our crafty couple two properties,

0:31:410:31:45

one of which being the - what could it possibly be? - Mystery House.

0:31:450:31:49

Well, let me give you a clue.

0:31:490:31:51

It's rather gorgeous, in a rural location,

0:31:510:31:55

but will it give them everything they're after?

0:31:550:31:57

Well, we'll have to wait and see because first I'm going to show them

0:31:570:32:00

a property that could be the answer

0:32:000:32:02

to their creative and artistic dreams.

0:32:020:32:05

Our house-hunt is taking us to the mid-Devon hamlet of Oldborough.

0:32:070:32:11

Less than a ten-minute drive away is the village of Copplestone.

0:32:120:32:16

Sitting in a valley and cutting through the village

0:32:160:32:18

is the Tarka Line railway,

0:32:180:32:20

which runs from Exeter to Barnstaple and is named after

0:32:200:32:24

the 1927 novel Tarka The Otter.

0:32:240:32:26

In the scenic hamlet of Oldborough is this Grade II-listed cottage.

0:32:260:32:30

Right, may I present you your property?

0:32:310:32:35

-Wonderful.

-Thatch.

0:32:370:32:39

-Yes.

-But it's new thatch.

0:32:390:32:41

It's only finished last year.

0:32:410:32:44

So you've got... You keep an eye on it and make sure the ridge

0:32:440:32:47

is always intact, you've got about 25 years there.

0:32:470:32:50

It will probably see me out!

0:32:500:32:52

LAUGHTER

0:32:520:32:54

Before I take you inside, what is going through your minds?

0:32:550:32:59

-It's beautiful.

-It's a very, very pretty-looking place, I have to say.

0:32:590:33:04

-It is lovely.

-Right, shall we?

-Let's go.

-Super.

0:33:040:33:09

This enchanting semidetached

0:33:090:33:11

cottage is built from cobblestone and is thought to

0:33:110:33:14

have its origins in the 16th century.

0:33:140:33:16

So, through the stable door, which leads us into our sitting-room.

0:33:190:33:25

Lovely. Beautiful oak floor.

0:33:250:33:27

This is all new.

0:33:270:33:29

The house has had a massive overhaul over the last few years.

0:33:290:33:32

You can see a lot of work has been done on it.

0:33:320:33:35

The beams are rather nice.

0:33:350:33:36

Perhaps a little low, but we're only short.

0:33:360:33:39

What about that as a fireplace?

0:33:410:33:43

I think we could all walk through that fireplace, couldn't we?

0:33:430:33:45

-It's so high.

-It's lovely.

-It's beautiful.

0:33:450:33:48

This is a period piece,

0:33:480:33:49

you do feel like you're stepping back in history.

0:33:490:33:52

Does that feel like the right thing to do for you two?

0:33:520:33:56

I think, potentially, yes.

0:33:560:33:58

Super. Well, we'll keep going through.

0:33:580:34:00

Next-door is the kitchen...

0:34:000:34:01

..which is kept toasty-warm by the range.

0:34:060:34:10

Lovely. Oh, yes, oh, yes.

0:34:100:34:13

This is a nice area, though.

0:34:130:34:15

You have the kitchen and the dining area, so it is sociable.

0:34:150:34:19

And actually quite bright, as well, with the French doors.

0:34:190:34:25

It works well.

0:34:250:34:27

Overall, this kitchen is giving us a very good impression.

0:34:270:34:31

I'm going to head upstairs now with the two of you.

0:34:310:34:33

-OK, lovely.

-See what you think there.

0:34:330:34:35

The first floor has just as much charm as downstairs and offers

0:34:380:34:42

a compact bathroom with three bedrooms.

0:34:420:34:45

A narrow room at the back is in use as a study and then, at the front,

0:34:450:34:48

there is a beamed double...

0:34:480:34:50

..and next door is the master.

0:34:520:34:55

I think it would be fair to say this thatched house isn't huge but you

0:34:550:34:58

-still get your three bedrooms.

-Yeah.

0:34:580:35:00

This is the master.

0:35:000:35:02

It's beautiful. It really is well thought out and stylish

0:35:020:35:07

within the tradition.

0:35:070:35:09

Some issues...

0:35:090:35:11

The walls are fantastic but there's nowhere

0:35:110:35:13

we'd be able to hang a picture on a wall that shape.

0:35:130:35:16

That is very true.

0:35:170:35:19

It's such a wonderful curve.

0:35:190:35:21

It's certainly interesting.

0:35:220:35:24

We'll probably be in a better position to come to a view

0:35:240:35:27

-when we have seen a bit more.

-That's a good point.

0:35:270:35:29

Let's head outside and see what else there is on offer.

0:35:290:35:32

-I'll lead on, shall I?

-Yes, please, thank you.

0:35:320:35:34

The outdoor space here provides

0:35:340:35:36

everything Maggie and Martin have asked for.

0:35:360:35:39

There are beautifully landscaped gardens featuring endless

0:35:390:35:42

countryside views and it's ideally equipped for living the good life

0:35:420:35:45

and indulging in creative hobbies.

0:35:450:35:48

Wow!

0:35:480:35:50

That's what I wanted to hear.

0:35:500:35:52

A little bit of wow, yeah.

0:35:520:35:53

-That is definitely a view.

-That is wonderful.

0:35:530:35:56

Now, the garden itself is about a third of an acre.

0:35:570:36:01

And you've got areas - if you look all around, you can see seating

0:36:010:36:04

-areas, which they obviously love the afternoon sun.

-Indeed.

0:36:040:36:08

The vegetable patch behind you, plenty of space.

0:36:080:36:12

You've got a pond and you have even got your own well.

0:36:120:36:14

I'm really getting to the main part, which is the workshop.

0:36:140:36:19

-Yes.

-You might have noticed when we walked into the house and then came

0:36:190:36:22

round, it was to the side.

0:36:220:36:24

At the moment, it's a huge double garage

0:36:240:36:26

but the owners don't use it to store their car.

0:36:260:36:29

They use it for their hobbies.

0:36:290:36:31

It has water and it has electricity, and it is pretty large.

0:36:310:36:36

-OK.

-So, let's see how much this

0:36:360:36:37

thatched house is, with a beautiful garden, views to die for.

0:36:370:36:42

Let's see what the current asking price is, shall we?

0:36:420:36:44

Who wants to go first?

0:36:440:36:46

It's my turn.

0:36:460:36:47

We've been so wildly out and I'm

0:36:470:36:49

expecting to be still wildly out, but I'm going to say 300,000.

0:36:490:36:54

OK. Martin?

0:36:540:36:56

I suspect that we're probably around 345.

0:36:560:37:00

Oh, you're very close.

0:37:000:37:03

The asking price is £350,000.

0:37:040:37:08

-OK.

-And you are paying for being on the edge of a village...

0:37:080:37:12

-Yes.

-..with those views.

0:37:120:37:14

-OK.

-I think you should have another look, on your own.

0:37:140:37:17

-Yes.

-I don't know how long I'm going to give you in that workshop.

0:37:170:37:20

I might have to put a timer on because you might be in your element

0:37:200:37:23

as you're looking around there!

0:37:230:37:24

-Yes.

-And, well, I'll meet you by the front door.

0:37:240:37:27

-Lovely.

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much.

-See you in a minute.

-Let's go.

0:37:270:37:31

This Grade II-listed thatched cottage is not only

0:37:330:37:36

£30,000 under budget,

0:37:360:37:38

but it also comes complete with wonderful original features along

0:37:380:37:42

with its three bedrooms.

0:37:420:37:43

It's got character and style, a fabulous garden with raised beds,

0:37:430:37:48

country views, and that all-important workshop.

0:37:480:37:51

Oh, this is quite a reasonable size, isn't it?

0:37:560:37:59

It is, and it's quite light.

0:37:590:38:01

-This has potential.

-It really does.

0:38:010:38:03

It's a lovely house, it really is.

0:38:050:38:07

It's got so much character and the thatch is just beautiful.

0:38:070:38:12

I think the house is really nice.

0:38:120:38:15

I think it's fairly compact.

0:38:150:38:17

I think we would still struggle to get a lot of our stuff in here.

0:38:170:38:21

I'm very taken with the garden.

0:38:210:38:23

I think the garden is fabulous and the location is brilliant.

0:38:230:38:26

The workshop - I think there's definitely the embryo of something.

0:38:260:38:31

It's the right sort of size.

0:38:310:38:32

Needs a little bit of work, but we could really use that.

0:38:320:38:36

So I'm very, very positive about this

0:38:360:38:39

and I think there's probably enough left in the budget to give us a

0:38:390:38:44

chance to do what we need to do.

0:38:440:38:45

-OK, you two?

-Yes.

-Indeed.

-Finished here?

0:38:480:38:51

-I think so.

-Thank you for getting the door, Martin.

0:38:510:38:53

-I think we're going to hit the road.

-OK. Let's go.

0:38:530:38:56

Not far from Barnstaple,

0:39:040:39:06

the small village of Cobbaton is

0:39:060:39:07

home to the Cobbaton Combat Collection,

0:39:070:39:10

a display of military memorabilia

0:39:100:39:12

from British and Commonwealth countries

0:39:120:39:14

that dates to the period between

0:39:140:39:16

1939 and 1945, when World War II raged.

0:39:160:39:20

I've come to meet Preston Isaac,

0:39:220:39:23

who founded the museum on the family farm in 1981.

0:39:230:39:27

-Preston. Good to meet you, sir.

-Welcome to Cobbaton.

0:39:290:39:32

A beautiful, sunny morning.

0:39:320:39:33

It's always like this in Devon, isn't it?

0:39:330:39:35

-Every day. Every day.

-Blue skies, sunshine.

0:39:350:39:37

-Yes, always.

-But as you come in here,

0:39:370:39:39

I've already spied one of those tanks.

0:39:390:39:41

So impressed with that. I mean, how did it actually start?

0:39:410:39:45

Little boy collecting things.

0:39:450:39:46

A little boy collecting things and it has got out of hand, hasn't it?

0:39:460:39:49

-Literally, yeah.

-What about the military angle?

0:39:490:39:51

-When did that come in?

-That started...

0:39:510:39:53

Dad was in the Home Guard, and you used to hear bits and pieces.

0:39:530:39:57

It's just a natural progression.

0:39:570:40:00

Preston's father passed on militaria from his war days to help start his

0:40:000:40:04

collection and, with the thousands

0:40:040:40:06

of items ranging from a military button to a 50-tonne tank,

0:40:060:40:11

every piece tells a tale.

0:40:110:40:12

If you had a particular favourite - to put you on the spot -

0:40:140:40:17

what would it be out of the whole collection?

0:40:170:40:19

It's the Churchill tank, which is quite symbolic.

0:40:190:40:22

And how long, with a vehicle like that,

0:40:220:40:24

if it's constantly looked after and restored, how long will it last for?

0:40:240:40:29

The main hull will last forever.

0:40:290:40:32

You are talking about armour six inches thick.

0:40:320:40:35

Preston's collection has stood the test of time and now it's his son,

0:40:350:40:39

Tim, who is at the helm.

0:40:390:40:41

The father-and-son team welcome over 10,000 visitors a year

0:40:410:40:45

who share their passion for these military memories.

0:40:450:40:48

I knew the collection was going to be vast,

0:40:480:40:50

but I didn't quite appreciate

0:40:500:40:51

-it was going to be so many artillery pieces here.

-Well, yes.

0:40:510:40:55

It's been 40, maybe 50 years, of collecting.

0:40:550:40:57

I want you to show me some that you're particularly fond of

0:40:570:41:00

-but where do we start?

-We start with something small.

0:41:000:41:02

This was made by a German prisoner of war

0:41:020:41:06

who was working on a farm here in Cobbaton

0:41:060:41:09

and given to my father when he was a little child.

0:41:090:41:11

-Really?

-As you swing it around a little piece of string

0:41:110:41:14

will operate the pecking birds.

0:41:140:41:16

-And that was from a prisoner of war?

-Yeah.

-My goodness.

0:41:160:41:19

Was it something like this, do you think, which ignited that flame

0:41:190:41:22

-for your father?

-It must have done. Yes, it must have done.

0:41:220:41:24

A little boy not really understanding what was happening around him with the war

0:41:240:41:27

but that would have started his collecting, I suspect.

0:41:270:41:30

We are surrounded by tanks here.

0:41:300:41:32

When I spoke to Preston, your father,

0:41:320:41:34

he mentioned his particular favourite was the Churchill tank.

0:41:340:41:37

-The Churchill, yes.

-I mean, I don't think...

0:41:370:41:40

Am I allowed to touch it?

0:41:400:41:41

-Yeah.

-I don't think I've ever been close to a tank before.

0:41:410:41:44

You know, you get the impression that they are going to be huge,

0:41:440:41:47

but this is quite enormous.

0:41:470:41:49

It's also pretty intimidating to be standing next to it.

0:41:490:41:52

-It is.

-Named after then Prime Minister Winston Churchill's family,

0:41:520:41:57

Preston bought this tank in the 1970s for a few hundred pounds.

0:41:570:42:01

It weighs in at 44 tonnes.

0:42:010:42:04

There were several hundred of them all dumped in this scrapyard,

0:42:040:42:07

just waiting for the price of steel to go up after the war.

0:42:070:42:10

Preston may only have paid the scrap price for the tank,

0:42:110:42:14

but, just recently, Tim was offered over £100,000 for it by a private

0:42:140:42:18

collector. He said no.

0:42:180:42:20

Do we have any idea when it was actually built?

0:42:220:42:25

It was built in October 1944,

0:42:250:42:28

so it was built for the final thrust of World War II,

0:42:280:42:31

from D-Day further on.

0:42:310:42:33

So it would have seen some serious action?

0:42:330:42:35

-I would think so.

-And how many crew

0:42:350:42:38

would have operated a tank like this?

0:42:380:42:40

There's a five-man crew - the driver, the hull gunner in the front,

0:42:400:42:44

and then the commander, the loader gunner, and the radio operator.

0:42:440:42:48

So would the crew have spent hours upon hours in this tank,

0:42:480:42:52

working together as a close unit?

0:42:520:42:53

They did. We've in fact met a radio operator who worked in a Churchill

0:42:530:42:58

tank from D-Day onwards

0:42:580:43:00

and he became very close to the other four men in the tank.

0:43:000:43:04

They were a family.

0:43:040:43:06

It's pretty awe-inspiring standing amongst these vehicles of war,

0:43:060:43:09

but I'm lucky enough to be getting

0:43:090:43:11

the opportunity to hop on board

0:43:110:43:13

this self-propelled gun to get first-hand experience from up top.

0:43:130:43:18

So this isn't a tank?

0:43:180:43:19

It is an artillery gun,

0:43:190:43:21

which has been mounted onto a tank chassis

0:43:210:43:24

simply to propel itself around the battlefield.

0:43:240:43:26

It is brutally basic, standing here.

0:43:260:43:29

You get a feeling of being quite exposed.

0:43:290:43:31

There's no ceiling to it. Why would that have been?

0:43:310:43:33

Simply because we are slightly behind the front line,

0:43:330:43:36

firing a barrage of fire over the infantry onto the target.

0:43:360:43:39

-My goodness.

-So we've got armoured sides and maybe a canvas roof if it

0:43:390:43:43

-were raining.

-Well, I'd love to see it move, that's for sure.

0:43:430:43:46

-Thank you, Tim.

-OK.

0:43:460:43:47

You really do get a sense of what it must be like.

0:43:500:43:53

We're standing here, and it's an impressive piece of kit,

0:43:530:43:56

but to think this would have been operated

0:43:560:43:59

with shells coming overhead, men dying on either side.

0:43:590:44:02

It is an extraordinary experience just to stand here.

0:44:020:44:06

Built in Canada from steel, with an aircraft engine,

0:44:130:44:16

2,000 of these vehicles were used by

0:44:160:44:18

the British Army during World War II.

0:44:180:44:21

And this mighty mover weighs in at around 30 tonnes,

0:44:210:44:25

with top speeds of around 25mph.

0:44:250:44:27

The vehicles in the collection are often taken to military shows

0:44:290:44:32

and also feature in films.

0:44:320:44:34

One even starred alongside Hollywood icon Brad Pitt,

0:44:340:44:37

so I'm pleased to say I'm in good company!

0:44:370:44:40

But, for now, it's time to get back to my house-hunting companions

0:44:410:44:45

and continue with their property search.

0:44:450:44:47

So we are on our way to the mystery house.

0:44:530:44:55

Maggie, what do you think we're going to see?

0:44:550:44:57

I have no idea. We've seen so many different and unusual properties

0:44:570:45:01

already. For the mystery it's going to be something quite different.

0:45:010:45:05

It could be perhaps an old farrier's

0:45:050:45:07

or an old leather worker's cottage with workshop.

0:45:070:45:10

I have no idea.

0:45:100:45:12

What about you, Martin?

0:45:120:45:14

Any ideas?

0:45:140:45:15

My only thought really is that we've seen, up to now,

0:45:150:45:19

traditional cottage-style properties

0:45:190:45:22

and I'm wondering whether the mystery house

0:45:220:45:25

might be something a little more modern, perhaps.

0:45:250:45:28

Feeling confident as we make our way to the mystery?

0:45:280:45:31

Feeling anticipatory.

0:45:310:45:34

THEY LAUGH

0:45:340:45:35

Well, we've certainly gone through plenty of beautiful, little

0:45:350:45:38

-villages, haven't we?

-We have.

0:45:380:45:39

It's just such a beautiful county and such lovely buildings.

0:45:390:45:43

It is just a wonderful place to be.

0:45:430:45:45

I'm sure this is the place we want to live.

0:45:450:45:48

The North Devon hamlet of Churchill

0:45:500:45:52

is the final property stop on our house hunt.

0:45:520:45:55

It's our most remote location,

0:45:550:45:56

but just a few minutes' drive away is the village of East Down,

0:45:560:46:00

which provides a village hall to unite the local community

0:46:000:46:03

and a great gastropub.

0:46:030:46:05

Churchill sits in rural isolation,

0:46:060:46:08

with far-reaching views across agricultural land,

0:46:080:46:12

home to an abundance of wildlife

0:46:120:46:14

and the National Trust's Regency house, Arlington Court,

0:46:140:46:18

built in 1823, stands proudly in the distance.

0:46:180:46:22

Our mystery house may be remote,

0:46:220:46:24

but what it lacks in neighbours and community,

0:46:240:46:26

it makes up for in many other ways.

0:46:260:46:29

So, for our final time, in a way, here's your property -

0:46:290:46:34

our mystery house.

0:46:340:46:36

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:46:360:46:38

-Indeed!

-Two yeses! It's about 200 years old.

0:46:380:46:41

It looks a reasonable size, actually.

0:46:410:46:43

-Yes.

-I think...certainly an interesting location.

0:46:430:46:45

Well, I think you've hit the nail on the head there, haven't you?

0:46:450:46:48

Because, for our mystery house,

0:46:480:46:50

we have brought you much further afield.

0:46:500:46:52

-We've gone more north...

-Yes.

-..but much more rural.

0:46:520:46:55

Surrounded 360 by views.

0:46:550:46:57

There's a lot about this sort of location that appeals to me,

0:46:570:47:00

and the house, yeah, looks solid.

0:47:000:47:02

Great. Right, well, I think we should start, don't you?

0:47:020:47:05

Yes, please.

0:47:050:47:07

This delightful property was extended in 1998,

0:47:080:47:11

which doubled its size to create the sunny,

0:47:110:47:14

airy home we're about to discover.

0:47:140:47:16

Please come in.

0:47:160:47:18

Let's see what you make of our mystery house inside.

0:47:180:47:22

First impressions...

0:47:220:47:24

it's a lovely size.

0:47:240:47:26

-Yes.

-Beautiful-size room.

0:47:260:47:29

I find the internal windows intriguing.

0:47:290:47:32

This must have been two rooms and the outside wall.

0:47:320:47:37

-Yes.

-You'd be right. That's the exterior wall.

0:47:370:47:39

This probably was two rooms.

0:47:390:47:42

They've kept that as a feature when they've extended the house.

0:47:420:47:44

-Lovely.

-So, really bright, roomy, spacious.

0:47:440:47:49

Just off to our left, up those stairs, is a study,

0:47:490:47:52

a really good-sized study, with a dual aspect,

0:47:520:47:55

so you get plenty of light in there, and views.

0:47:550:47:57

This works. This does work for us.

0:47:570:47:59

Absolutely. I'm pretty much bowled over by this...

0:47:590:48:02

-I have to say.

-Are you?

0:48:020:48:04

Yes. It's got that sort of openness that you don't always get in the

0:48:040:48:08

cottages and...yes.

0:48:080:48:10

-Love it.

-Yeah?

-Absolutely love it.

-Oh!

0:48:100:48:13

Music to my ears. Let's keep going.

0:48:130:48:15

At the back of the house, and divided by an open stairway,

0:48:170:48:20

is the kitchen-diner.

0:48:200:48:21

-Oh, yes.

-I like the kitchen.

0:48:230:48:25

It's good. This is a great space.

0:48:250:48:27

-Yes.

-The kitchen's lovely, but also having the diner there, where...

0:48:270:48:32

OK, the staircase in between but it's sociable.

0:48:320:48:35

-Yes.

-You know, if you've got friends round or even one of us cooking,

0:48:350:48:40

and that is just a good sociable space.

0:48:400:48:42

-Yeah.

-Yes.

-It does work very, very well.

0:48:420:48:46

-Yes.

-So, we're liking the kitchen, we're liking the dining area,

0:48:460:48:49

we're liking everything we're seeing.

0:48:490:48:51

In addition to this, if you just

0:48:510:48:53

look past, you can see there's a doorway -

0:48:530:48:55

that leads outside - but also you've got your utility room there.

0:48:550:48:59

And I want you to remember that room

0:48:590:49:01

because it could prove quite important later on.

0:49:010:49:03

-Right.

-OK.

-That's a big hint, wasn't it?

0:49:030:49:06

I was going to say, that's subtle, yes.

0:49:060:49:08

-Yes.

-But you've seen enough downstairs?

0:49:080:49:10

-Yes.

-Yes.

-Let's go and have a look up.

-Lovely.

0:49:100:49:14

Above us, there's a surprise waiting for Maggie and Martin.

0:49:140:49:17

Along with a tiled family bathroom are four bedrooms,

0:49:170:49:21

meaning there are already options for a creative workplace.

0:49:210:49:24

At the back of the house there is a dual-aspect double

0:49:240:49:27

and at the front are two equally bright bedrooms.

0:49:270:49:30

Then there is the master, which is concealing another surprise.

0:49:320:49:35

Now, the downstairs is pretty spacious and you'll

0:49:370:49:41

be pleased to know the upstairs is equally as spacious.

0:49:410:49:44

-Wow.

-Yes.

0:49:440:49:46

-This is lovely.

-Yeah, this is your master.

0:49:460:49:49

It has an en suite.

0:49:500:49:52

I know you didn't ask for an en suite,

0:49:520:49:54

but do you like the idea of having one?

0:49:540:49:55

Yes, particularly when you've got guests.

0:49:550:49:58

It does make life a little easier.

0:49:580:50:00

I think it's always a bonus.

0:50:000:50:02

It's not something we would necessarily expect, but, you know,

0:50:020:50:07

any bonus is good.

0:50:070:50:08

Good. So, overall, how would you rate this property inside?

0:50:080:50:14

It's very, very good. Really, I think it's got

0:50:150:50:19

pretty much what we've been asking for,

0:50:190:50:22

so long as we can sort out workshop and...

0:50:220:50:24

So, definitely fingers crossed, this would be a goer for us, I think.

0:50:240:50:28

-Yeah.

-Now, we're going to head back downstairs,

0:50:280:50:31

but you two are creative.

0:50:310:50:33

I want your imagination to work with the next thing

0:50:330:50:36

-I'm going to show you.

-OK.

0:50:360:50:38

The outside space sits to the front with a lawn and a terrace -

0:50:410:50:44

perfect for enjoying the warmer months.

0:50:440:50:46

The house also enjoys spectacular views across Exmoor National Park.

0:50:460:50:50

Now, let's talk in a little bit more detail about the garden,

0:50:520:50:56

the property and also the potential for a workshop.

0:50:560:51:00

I think I've given it away there, haven't I?

0:51:000:51:02

-Yes.

-The potential for a workshop.

0:51:020:51:05

The way it's set up at the moment,

0:51:050:51:06

you do have a small barn at the side.

0:51:060:51:09

I'm guessing that might not be quite big enough for what you're after.

0:51:090:51:13

However, you've got a shed the other side of it,

0:51:130:51:16

but you have all that land that, in a way, is to the side of the house,

0:51:160:51:19

so it's not going to spoil the view,

0:51:190:51:21

it's not going to detract from the property.

0:51:210:51:23

There could be the potential there of putting a really big workshop in

0:51:230:51:28

and you could have it connected to the house, if you wanted to.

0:51:280:51:31

Yes, I think there is certainly the opportunity to put something there.

0:51:310:51:35

-There's somewhere to put it.

-Yeah. I do think it's a lovely,

0:51:350:51:38

lovely building that has the potential to work for us.

0:51:380:51:40

I think it could be a lovely home.

0:51:400:51:42

Well, let's see what price we're going to put on our lovely home.

0:51:420:51:46

What are we thinking?

0:51:460:51:47

Well, I've been way out every time that I've guessed so far,

0:51:470:51:51

but I'm going to go to the top of our budget.

0:51:510:51:53

-I think it's probably going to be about 375.

-OK.

0:51:530:51:57

Bearing in mind the fact that we do have to do some work for a workshop,

0:51:570:52:02

and we do need some budget, I'm going to hope around about 360.

0:52:020:52:07

You're both actually very close

0:52:070:52:09

cos the asking price is £369,000.

0:52:090:52:13

-OK.

-Yes.

-That's...

0:52:150:52:16

Yes. Squeezing it.

0:52:160:52:18

-Yes.

-But I guess we probably knew

0:52:180:52:20

-that we would be squeezing it at some point.

-Yes.

0:52:200:52:23

Would you like to take another look around?

0:52:230:52:26

-Yes.

-Yes.

-Yes, please.

-Please do.

0:52:260:52:28

The gardens, the potential for that all-important workshop.

0:52:280:52:31

And come and find me when you're ready.

0:52:310:52:33

-OK. Lovely.

-Good.

-Thank you.

0:52:330:52:35

This double-fronted cottage is

0:52:400:52:42

£11,000 under budget and offers a bright

0:52:420:52:44

and roomy living space, plus character features

0:52:440:52:48

and four bedrooms.

0:52:480:52:49

It has wonderful views from the

0:52:490:52:51

garden and there is also the potential to create a workshop.

0:52:510:52:54

The mystery house may be remote, but it's perfectly packaged.

0:52:540:52:58

This is a nice room.

0:53:010:53:03

-It's a good size.

-It is, actually.

0:53:030:53:06

I'm not sure whether this is your work room, or my work room.

0:53:060:53:09

It's promising.

0:53:090:53:12

I think this house is absolutely lovely.

0:53:120:53:14

It's been redeveloped in a sensitive way,

0:53:140:53:17

with a great sense of style.

0:53:170:53:20

It's light, it's airy and it's quirky.

0:53:200:53:23

It's lovely.

0:53:230:53:25

I think the house is great,

0:53:250:53:26

I really do. I think it's a big house,

0:53:260:53:29

there is room for what we need.

0:53:290:53:32

I think the location's good.

0:53:320:53:35

Because it's towards the top end of the budget

0:53:350:53:37

we're got to think quite carefully.

0:53:370:53:40

That would have to be factored in to the cost of building a workshop.

0:53:400:53:43

The garden's perhaps a little small

0:53:430:53:46

and we do have to do something with the workshop but I like it a lot.

0:53:460:53:50

It is so beautiful out here today.

0:53:520:53:55

-It's lovely.

-Oh, and the sun's shining.

0:53:550:53:58

-Glorious.

-Fabulous.

0:53:580:53:59

-Yeah.

-Amazing views, but I'm going to have to pull you two away now,

0:53:590:54:02

I'm afraid. Let's go somewhere where you two

0:54:020:54:04

can have a chat on your own first.

0:54:040:54:06

I'll join you and you can tell me what your

0:54:060:54:08

-next move's going to be.

-Right.

-OK.

0:54:080:54:10

Well, we know Martin and Maggie need to find a new home,

0:54:140:54:18

but will they be moving into any of our properties here in Devon?

0:54:180:54:21

Let's find out.

0:54:210:54:23

Well, Martin and Maggie,

0:54:290:54:32

I wonder how we've done here in Devon for you.

0:54:320:54:35

Have we found you your next home?

0:54:350:54:38

I think you might well have done.

0:54:380:54:40

Sharp intake of breath.

0:54:410:54:43

OK. But which one in particular took your fancy?

0:54:430:54:46

I think the one that is highest on our list

0:54:460:54:49

-is undoubtedly the mystery house.

-Yes!

0:54:490:54:52

We think it's a beautiful house.

0:54:520:54:54

-Yeah.

-We need to work out how we

0:54:540:54:56

would handle the workshop and we are also

0:54:560:54:59

a little bit uncertain about the location,

0:54:590:55:02

-because it is a little bit more remote.

-It is.

-Yes.

0:55:020:55:05

I'm going to need to go and walk round the area and see

0:55:050:55:09

how I'd be able to connect with

0:55:090:55:10

neighbours and what sort of community

0:55:100:55:12

-there is down the hill.

-Yeah.

0:55:120:55:13

It is a beautiful place and a beautiful, beautiful house.

0:55:130:55:17

Oh, I'm so delighted.

0:55:170:55:18

Did you get that feeling that you

0:55:180:55:20

-could be creative and have a lovely life at that property?

-Oh, yes.

0:55:200:55:24

It is a lovely house, lovely atmosphere in the house.

0:55:240:55:27

Well, it's all sounding very promising,

0:55:270:55:28

but what is the next important step for you two?

0:55:280:55:32

Well, we have had a quick chat with the owners.

0:55:320:55:35

-Already?

-Yes.

-Indeed.

0:55:350:55:38

And we are going to go back and have another look.

0:55:380:55:41

We're keen enough to get back and look at it in more detail.

0:55:410:55:46

-That's tomorrow.

-My goodness.

0:55:460:55:48

Well, that is delightful news.

0:55:480:55:49

I leave you literally for a couple of hours and this is what happens.

0:55:490:55:53

Well, I hope all your questions get answered,

0:55:530:55:55

that second viewing is as successful as the first.

0:55:550:55:58

-Thank you.

-And who knows?

0:55:580:55:59

In a few weeks, a few months' time, well,

0:55:590:56:01

we know you're going to be residents of Devon,

0:56:010:56:03

but you might be living in that splendid mystery house.

0:56:030:56:06

-Yes.

-You will let us know how you get on, won't you?

0:56:060:56:08

-Oh, we will.

-Of course.

-Delightful. Thank you both so very much.

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much, too.

Well, I think mentally both Maggie and Martin have left Stockport way

0:56:180:56:23

behind and physically are certainly a big step closer to a new life here

0:56:230:56:28

in Devon. They've loved all the locations that we've shown them,

0:56:280:56:32

but I am so happy that they've

0:56:320:56:34

already been in touch with the owners of our mystery house

0:56:340:56:38

and are having a second viewing very, very soon.

0:56:380:56:42

I so hope it works out for them

0:56:420:56:44

and I'll see you again on Escape To The Country.

0:56:440:56:47

Maggie and Martin did revisit the mystery house and, although they

0:56:500:56:53

still loved it, they've decided it was a little too remote for them.

0:56:530:56:57

But I'm happy to report that they've since had an offer accepted on a

0:56:570:57:01

detached cottage with a workshop in North Devon.
