Great to have you here. I've got the lot here. It is nice

to have somebody who has a record. Can I get it out and smell it?

have not seen this. I don't think any of us have. Oh, vinyl! Have a

sniff of this! That is a nice quality piece of vinyl. People can

see it, smell it, live it. It is the first record for 16 years. Why?

What inspired you to make it after all this time - 16 years - why?

discussed having a long history of recordings and albums and fans we

were not in touch with. It was our responsible to go out there and

reconnect with them. In that process, we decided, it is the most

fun thing, but since... Making new music is the most fun thing. There

are a lot of skulls here. And snow:. Correct me if I am wrong, but the

ancient Greeks would hang these on the buildings of the wooden temples

to ward off evil spirits. Is that what you were doing here? Exactly.

It is a great record. You are playing back together, do you have

a different atmosphere together after all this time? It makes 15

years seem like not that long. Music seems to transcend time, when

we are rehearsing a song we have not played in 25 years and we are

listening to the radio and why we arrange it that way and you

remember the room we were standing in and the discussion we were

having. What made you want to start in the first place? What made you

think, right I have to do music? are all big fans of music. I, for

one, believed if I was good enough and into music as a musician and

writer that the best band in the world would show up and beg me to

be in their band and that didn't happen. So you had to get there.

we had to invent our dream band and that's Soundgarden. You have done a

superb job of it. Others all coming from Seattle - is that an important

part of the city - did that play an important part in creating your

sound and what you were about? think we were part of a bigger

picture, which was the Indy scene, it was in the US, the UK, Australia,

Canada. That is what we wanted to participate in and all our friends

wanted to be part of that same thing. It is how it started out.

Johnnie Cash did one of your songs, Rusty Cage. Did you meet him?

was terrifying. He seemed to be 11 feet tall when he spoke. He had a

very deep voice. He was a gentleman, a very sweet person, but I was

afraid. Fantastic! He loved that song, he must have loved it to do

it. He was great. He is almost part of the unique, special club of

people who have recorded a James Bond theme, which is casino Royale.

Were you a fan before that? I was a huge ShaunConnery fan and a huge

fan of Paul McCartney, Live And Let Die. Did you know where the 007

comes from? No. Well Ian Flemming lived in Kent and the bus, from

Dover to London or Deal was 007. Is that true? As far as anything,

truish. Do you have any tools you take with you? Just a respirator.

Are there any gad goats you would like? The Aston -- any gadgets you

would like to have? The Aston Martin. I wanted it when I wrote

Martin. I wanted it when I wrote the song. It has been great having

you here. The band is sounding marvellous. Thank you for joining

And now, over at the piano, one of France's greatest artists, she has

just played at the Albert Hall last week. She has done a marvellous

record. I am delighted she is here, Patricia Kaas.

Welcome to the show. Fantastic that Welcome to the show. Fantastic that

you are here. , now we have this marvellous CD

here. You are hugely successful all around the world, which is

fantastic for a French-speaking artist. Was music a part of your

upbringing? Were your parents very musical? Not really. My father

liked to dance, but not a musician. What got you into the whole thing?

Listen to records, sing in front of a mirror and then suddenly you wish

to be on a stage. And never looked back. You made this album of Edith

Piaf. When did you first hear her? Maybe I was ten, because you had to

sing a song of Piaf. I was more interested in Piaf when

they tried to compare me to her because I wanted to understand. I

think it's, to understand her music, you need to have an experience of

life and knowing sadness and difficulties and.... It is like the

blues music. It is like poetry, but it is grown up music, somebody who

has lived a life. Of course you can listen to it when you are younger,

but I think you understand it better. Also I, when I sang it,

when I was younger, it was much different. Now I don't need to

think about the emotions and everything, I just think, because I

have more experience. In a moment, we're are going to do a song she

wrote, which is Hymne A L'Amour. What is that song about? It's the

end of love. Nothing can happen. Even God can't separate us - we'll

be always together. It doesn't matter what happens. Yeah. I will

introduce somebody over there and then I will be back hear and then I

look forward to have an Edith Piaf song with Patricia Kaas, ladies and
