Welcome to the show.

Good to see you here. Lovely to be here.

There's a bit of sparkly water, and some black fluid for me. Yes.

Sharpen our senses. No expense spent.

It's great to have you, because oft before when you've been on

it's been with Keane, and here you are on your own. Yes.

I mean, is it easy being on your own,

is it enjoyable being on your own?

It's very enjoyable.

I've realised what a big task it is, actually.

I think anyone who knows Keane will know

that obviously I was the singer in Keane,

and Tim, who played the piano, he was the songwriter.

So, you know, writing a record, this is the first time I've done it,

I've discovered it's quite an undertaking.

With Keane, you wrote a little bit...? Or was it really not you?

At the very beginning, in the early years of Keane,

both Tim and I wrote songs.

And then in the two or three years leading up to our first record,

Hopes And Fears, suddenly all these songs, like... He started writing

all these songs like Everybody's Changing and Somewhere Only We Know.

And I thought, "Do you know what,

"I'm not sure I can keep up with this, you know? It's just too good."

And so I just... I sort of retreated really, and went to just singing.

And what made you decide you wanted to do a record on your own?

Well, you know, I'm a creative soul.

And I just, you know, have had this sort of burning desire

that's grown and grown and grown over the years, you know,

and I just felt it was time to give it a shot.

It's quite an emotional sort of record, isn't it, would you say?

It's an incredibly personal record.

You know, as you may remember, from about sort of ten years ago,

I had my kind of first problems with drug addiction.

And that was a problem that never went away for me,

it kept resurfacing again and again over the years.

And of course the thing is

that each time comes back, it's worse.

And 2014

when I'd sort of decided I was going to start making this solo album,

and the same year my daughter was born,

you know, should have been a great year.

But unfortunately my problems kind of resurfaced in a major way.

And, you know, I ended up nearly killing myself, basically.

And I got to a point where I thought, "If I carry on,

"I will be dead or certainly will lose everything."

But you're on the right track now, thank God.

Well, yeah, and the record

is the story of getting well from that position.

Well, we've got a bit of footage. We're going to go down memory lane,

and here is This Is The Last Time,

when you were on the show a few years ago.

That is a hard act to follow cos it's a great band, isn't it?

Yes. But your new band sounds great. They're wonderful, yeah.

You're going to be going on tour, doing lots of shows.

Yes, we're going out this month in fact.

Plenty of stuff basically for the next year,

we're going to be on the road.

Now, last week, Wiley was on. Right.

And I was asking him what he did to relax.

And his chief source of relaxation

was eating fish and chips.

Right. I don't know, is there something you like to do to relax?

Not eating fish - I GO fishing. Oh, really?

Yeah, I go on these week-long trips to France, with a bunch of mates

and sit on the bank, and I just find it a very kind of relaxing pursuit.

It's like nothing else I do.

Do you catch much, or is it about the time?

No, it's about the time, really. Yeah.

I mean, you're trying to catch these specimen fish that are sort of

50 lbs or 60 lbs, you can barely pick them up.

But I don't have much luck.

And do you scoff the fish that you eat?

No. That would be bad form, I think. Would it? OK, just checking.

It's just about catching specimens...

I was thinking of putting you and Wiley together,

you know, you could catch the fish and relax together.

Sounds like a plan.

What are you going to play for us next?

We're going to do a song called Still Waiting.

It's great to see you and have you back on the show

after a short period of missing you.

You've got this record out now, Secular Hymns, great record.

Lots of great songs on it. Where did you record this record?

Here in England, in a little church in Great Milton, Oxfordshire.

Right. So recorded in a church,

but is it next to a three-star Michelin restaurant?

Oh, yeah.

JOOLS LAUGHS Oh, yeah.

Cos it's very important, that -

musicians like nice food, don't they?

So it's very nice to sort of put the two together. Yeah.

Well, it actually worked the other way around,

we were invited to play there because of the restaurant.

Oh.

Which I... Maybe that's why it was so cool.

And you've always found great songs,

and you've gone to the... to the song face

and found early wonderful songs.

Where did you find some of the ones for this one?

Where did you look for them?

Oh, gosh. You know, that's a good question.

I just know that they're...

When I found out that they were out there,

it was important to try and get something.

Like, I discovered Linton Kwesi Johnson,

who's not really well known in the States,

via a French guy.

And then the Tom Waits tune, I've been trying to do for 20 years.

So it's all mixed up. Yeah.

And then there's really old things, there's a Lil Green song,

some Lucky Millinder, and that Sister Rosetta Tharpe song,

and all of that, and Bill Doggett, all of these really early things...

Yes. ..from the sort of '30s and '40s.

And it's all, but it all sounds like one...

When did you first start to hear that old type of music?

Well, my dad was born in New Orleans,

and he used to sit around the house and play, you know,

some early blues and jazz,

and kind of a mixture with Texarkana, too,

cos he used to live down there.

So it all kind of...

Kind of mixed together, and then there was a little Ravel

every once in a while, and Tchaikovsky, or something like that.

But it was all over the place,

and he would listen to records over and over and over again.

And he wasn't a musician, so go figure. Yeah.

And is it true that early on,

you played as a street musician in Paris? I did. How...

What was... What was that about? What were you doing?

Well, you know, I guess because American jazz isn't really as

celebrated as it could be, that's my opinion, in the United States.

So when I moved to Paris and I had heard this music at home,

like Fats Waller songs, and then I saw Americans,

and maybe some Europeans, also, playing them on the street.

Probably because there's a tourist scene,

but there was also already a tradition of just enjoying music,

sort of like what you do,

before you were doing it, probably. Yeah, exactly.

Well, somebody was doing it before... Putting a show on. Yeah.

Exactly. Putting a show on. Making...

Connecting that music with people.

And what are you going to play for us next?

Well, we're going to do a song together, right?

The Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune? Exactly. Shout Sister...

Which is... Lucky Millinder, the big band did it, didn't they? Yeah.

And it's really a great piece.

And you know, how she sort of was one of the first...

if not THE first woman to lead her own... Playing guitar and...

Yeah. ..you know, make a name for herself.

And now, it's finally going to be women's time soon, right?

Yeah, that's right. At least, in America. She did...

Yeah, she did invent all of that. Which, I mean, invent....

She was one of the, she was playing rock and roll

before it was all called rock and roll and...

I'm telling you, women are behind it, sometimes. That's right.

They're going like this, now.

I think it means that they all agree with us very much. OK.
