CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
James Vincent McMorrow! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
With Rising Water, from We Move. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
Now, at the table here, welcoming for a nice chat, Tom Chaplin! | 0:17:54 | 0:17:59
Welcome to the show. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
Good to see you here. Lovely to be here. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
There's a bit of sparkly water, and some black fluid for me. Yes. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
Sharpen our senses. No expense spent. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:09
It's great to have you, because oft before when you've been on | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
it's been with Keane, and here you are on your own. Yes. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
I mean, is it easy being on your own, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
is it enjoyable being on your own? | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
It's very enjoyable. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
I've realised what a big task it is, actually. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
I think anyone who knows Keane will know | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
that obviously I was the singer in Keane, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
and Tim, who played the piano, he was the songwriter. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
So, you know, writing a record, this is the first time I've done it, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:35
I've discovered it's quite an undertaking. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
With Keane, you wrote a little bit...? Or was it really not you? | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
At the very beginning, in the early years of Keane, | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
both Tim and I wrote songs. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
And then in the two or three years leading up to our first record, | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
Hopes And Fears, suddenly all these songs, like... He started writing | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
all these songs like Everybody's Changing and Somewhere Only We Know. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
And I thought, "Do you know what, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
"I'm not sure I can keep up with this, you know? It's just too good." | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
And so I just... I sort of retreated really, and went to just singing. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:04
And what made you decide you wanted to do a record on your own? | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
Well, you know, I'm a creative soul. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
And I just, you know, have had this sort of burning desire | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
that's grown and grown and grown over the years, you know, | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
and I just felt it was time to give it a shot. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:20
It's quite an emotional sort of record, isn't it, would you say? | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
It's an incredibly personal record. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
You know, as you may remember, from about sort of ten years ago, | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
I had my kind of first problems with drug addiction. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
And that was a problem that never went away for me, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
it kept resurfacing again and again over the years. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
And of course the thing is | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
that each time comes back, it's worse. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
And 2014 | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44
when I'd sort of decided I was going to start making this solo album, | 0:19:44 | 0:19:49
and the same year my daughter was born, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:50
you know, should have been a great year. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
But unfortunately my problems kind of resurfaced in a major way. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
And, you know, I ended up nearly killing myself, basically. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
And I got to a point where I thought, "If I carry on, | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
"I will be dead or certainly will lose everything." | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
But you're on the right track now, thank God. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
Well, yeah, and the record | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
is the story of getting well from that position. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:11
Well, we've got a bit of footage. We're going to go down memory lane, | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
and here is This Is The Last Time, | 0:20:14 | 0:20:15
when you were on the show a few years ago. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
# The last time | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
# You fall on me for anything you like | 0:20:21 | 0:20:26
# Your one last line | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
# You fall on me for anything you like | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
# And years make everything all right | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
# You fall on me for anything you like | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
# And I No, I don't mind... # | 0:20:39 | 0:20:45
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:20:47 | 0:20:48
Aw...! | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
And that's... | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
That is a hard act to follow cos it's a great band, isn't it? | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Yes. But your new band sounds great. They're wonderful, yeah. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
You're going to be going on tour, doing lots of shows. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
Yes, we're going out this month in fact. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
Plenty of stuff basically for the next year, | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
we're going to be on the road. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:07
Now, last week, Wiley was on. Right. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
And I was asking him what he did to relax. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
And his chief source of relaxation | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
was eating fish and chips. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
Right. I don't know, is there something you like to do to relax? | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
Not eating fish - I GO fishing. Oh, really? | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
Yeah, I go on these week-long trips to France, with a bunch of mates | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
and sit on the bank, and I just find it a very kind of relaxing pursuit. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:30
It's like nothing else I do. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
Do you catch much, or is it about the time? | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
No, it's about the time, really. Yeah. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
I mean, you're trying to catch these specimen fish that are sort of | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
50 lbs or 60 lbs, you can barely pick them up. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
But I don't have much luck. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:43
And do you scoff the fish that you eat? | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
No. That would be bad form, I think. Would it? OK, just checking. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
It's just about catching specimens... | 0:21:48 | 0:21:49
I was thinking of putting you and Wiley together, | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
you know, you could catch the fish and relax together. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
Sounds like a plan. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
What are you going to play for us next? | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
We're going to do a song called Still Waiting. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
Well, thank you much for joining us, the new record sounds great. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
Thanks a lot, Tom Chaplin! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06

# Oh! Hard times | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
# Come again no more | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
# And that sigh that is wafted | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
# Across the troubled waves | 0:25:08 | 0:25:12
# It's a wail that is heard across the shores | 0:25:12 | 0:25:20
# It's a dirge that's murmured | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
# Around the lowly graves | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
# Oh! Hard times | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:38:30 | 0:38:34
# He was not the kind of man | 0:38:56 | 0:39:00
# That would walk you to school hand-in-hand | 0:39:01 | 0:39:06
# He was hard work, leather and tan | 0:39:07 | 0:39:11
# And he spoke with a throatful of sand | 0:39:13 | 0:39:17
# Me, I'd hang onto every word | 0:39:18 | 0:39:22
# You never know what you might learn | 0:39:24 | 0:39:28
# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down | 0:39:28 | 0:39:33
# Never put a blade in the ground | 0:39:34 | 0:39:38
# Always look a man right square in the eye | 0:39:40 | 0:39:45
# Don't let the good life pass you by | 0:39:47 | 0:39:53
# Any little problem of mine | 0:40:04 | 0:40:07
# He'd spit and say, "Boy, you'll be fine" | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
# He knew that there'd come a time | 0:40:14 | 0:40:18
# When I'd find real mountains to climb | 0:40:20 | 0:40:24
# Life can be cruel to us all | 0:40:25 | 0:40:29
# Sooner or later we fall | 0:40:31 | 0:40:35
# Son, don't let your horseshoes point down | 0:40:35 | 0:40:39
# Never put a blade in the ground | 0:40:41 | 0:40:45
# Always look a man right square in the eye | 0:40:47 | 0:40:51
# Don't let the good life pass you by | 0:40:54 | 0:40:59
# I only ever once saw him cry | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
# The day that his own mother died | 0:41:36 | 0:41:39
# Just one tear in the corner of his eye | 0:41:40 | 0:41:45
# And he smiled and said softly, "Goodbye" | 0:41:46 | 0:41:50
# Me, I've got two of my own | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55

Blackberry Smoke! | 0:42:47 | 0:42:48
The Good Life, from their album Like An Arrow. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:52
Now, at the piano, I meet, briefly, the wonderful Madeleine Peyroux! | 0:42:52 | 0:42:57
It's great to see you and have you back on the show | 0:42:58 | 0:43:01
after a short period of missing you. | 0:43:01 | 0:43:04
You've got this record out now, Secular Hymns, great record. | 0:43:04 | 0:43:08
Lots of great songs on it. Where did you record this record? | 0:43:08 | 0:43:12
Here in England, in a little church in Great Milton, Oxfordshire. | 0:43:12 | 0:43:16
Right. So recorded in a church, | 0:43:16 | 0:43:18
but is it next to a three-star Michelin restaurant? | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
Oh, yeah. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:21
JOOLS LAUGHS Oh, yeah. | 0:43:21 | 0:43:23
Cos it's very important, that - | 0:43:23 | 0:43:24
musicians like nice food, don't they? | 0:43:24 | 0:43:26
So it's very nice to sort of put the two together. Yeah. | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
Well, it actually worked the other way around, | 0:43:29 | 0:43:31
we were invited to play there because of the restaurant. | 0:43:31 | 0:43:33
Oh. | 0:43:33 | 0:43:34 | |
Which I... Maybe that's why it was so cool. | 0:43:34 | 0:43:37
And you've always found great songs, | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
and you've gone to the... to the song face | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
and found early wonderful songs. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:45
Where did you find some of the ones for this one? | 0:43:45 | 0:43:47
Where did you look for them? | 0:43:47 | 0:43:48
Oh, gosh. You know, that's a good question. | 0:43:48 | 0:43:50
I just know that they're... | 0:43:50 | 0:43:52
When I found out that they were out there, | 0:43:52 | 0:43:54
it was important to try and get something. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
Like, I discovered Linton Kwesi Johnson, | 0:43:57 | 0:43:58
who's not really well known in the States, | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
via a French guy. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
And then the Tom Waits tune, I've been trying to do for 20 years. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
So it's all mixed up. Yeah. | 0:44:07 | 0:44:09
And then there's really old things, there's a Lil Green song, | 0:44:09 | 0:44:11
some Lucky Millinder, and that Sister Rosetta Tharpe song, | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
and all of that, and Bill Doggett, all of these really early things... | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
Yes. ..from the sort of '30s and '40s. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:19
And it's all, but it all sounds like one... | 0:44:19 | 0:44:21
When did you first start to hear that old type of music? | 0:44:21 | 0:44:24
Well, my dad was born in New Orleans, | 0:44:24 | 0:44:26
and he used to sit around the house and play, you know, | 0:44:26 | 0:44:30
some early blues and jazz, | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
and kind of a mixture with Texarkana, too, | 0:44:33 | 0:44:35
cos he used to live down there. | 0:44:35 | 0:44:37
So it all kind of... | 0:44:37 | 0:44:38
Kind of mixed together, and then there was a little Ravel | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
every once in a while, and Tchaikovsky, or something like that. | 0:44:41 | 0:44:44
But it was all over the place, | 0:44:44 | 0:44:45
and he would listen to records over and over and over again. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:49
And he wasn't a musician, so go figure. Yeah. | 0:44:49 | 0:44:52
And is it true that early on, | 0:44:52 | 0:44:54
you played as a street musician in Paris? I did. How... | 0:44:54 | 0:44:57
What was... What was that about? What were you doing? | 0:44:57 | 0:44:59
Well, you know, I guess because American jazz isn't really as | 0:44:59 | 0:45:03
celebrated as it could be, that's my opinion, in the United States. | 0:45:03 | 0:45:07
So when I moved to Paris and I had heard this music at home, | 0:45:07 | 0:45:11
like Fats Waller songs, and then I saw Americans, | 0:45:11 | 0:45:14
and maybe some Europeans, also, playing them on the street. | 0:45:14 | 0:45:18
Probably because there's a tourist scene, | 0:45:18 | 0:45:20
but there was also already a tradition of just enjoying music, | 0:45:20 | 0:45:24
sort of like what you do, | 0:45:24 | 0:45:26
before you were doing it, probably. Yeah, exactly. | 0:45:26 | 0:45:28
Well, somebody was doing it before... Putting a show on. Yeah. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:31
Exactly. Putting a show on. Making... | 0:45:31 | 0:45:33
Connecting that music with people. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:34
And what are you going to play for us next? | 0:45:34 | 0:45:36
Well, we're going to do a song together, right? | 0:45:36 | 0:45:39
The Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune? Exactly. Shout Sister... | 0:45:39 | 0:45:42
Which is... Lucky Millinder, the big band did it, didn't they? Yeah. | 0:45:42 | 0:45:45
And it's really a great piece. | 0:45:45 | 0:45:47
And you know, how she sort of was one of the first... | 0:45:47 | 0:45:51
if not THE first woman to lead her own... Playing guitar and... | 0:45:51 | 0:45:57
Yeah. ..you know, make a name for herself. | 0:45:57 | 0:45:59
And now, it's finally going to be women's time soon, right? | 0:45:59 | 0:46:01
Yeah, that's right. At least, in America. She did... | 0:46:01 | 0:46:03
Yeah, she did invent all of that. Which, I mean, invent.... | 0:46:03 | 0:46:06
She was one of the, she was playing rock and roll | 0:46:06 | 0:46:07
before it was all called rock and roll and... | 0:46:07 | 0:46:09
I'm telling you, women are behind it, sometimes. That's right. | 0:46:09 | 0:46:12
They're going like this, now. | 0:46:12 | 0:46:14
I think it means that they all agree with us very much. OK. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:17
Thank you for joining us. Madeleine Peyroux! | 0:46:17 | 0:46:19
All right. | 0:46:19 | 0:46:20
We'll be seeing Madeleine in a moment. | 0:46:20 | 0:46:22
Now, I walk gracefully | 0:46:25 | 0:46:28
and carefully up to this corner, | 0:46:28 | 0:46:30
and welcome James Vincent McMorrow. | 0:46:30 | 0:46:32
