Hi, I'm Katy B and I love music. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
And I'm taking a group of Londonderry kids | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
who all love music too and giving them an opportunity | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
to perform on the biggest stages I can find. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
We take talented young musicians, more used to performing | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
in their bedrooms, and put them in front of an audience of thousands. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
and plenty of passion - | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
this is Music City. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
I'm in Derry, which this year is UK City of Culture. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
This means its calendar is packed with world-class events. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
The city is determined that Derry's young people | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
get a chance to be involved, and have created an initiative | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
called the Music Promise. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
As part of that, we scoured Derry's schools | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
to find 13 keen young musicians to give them the chance | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
to up their game, work with some of the artists visiting this year... | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
I'm already liking your hand position, that's very good. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
How are you? I'm Amelia. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
..and perform on the biggest stages... | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
I love music myself, and as a recording artist, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
I've been lucky enough to be able to make a life out of it. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
# So come on, play me just one more song... # | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
I can't wait to be involved. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
I'd love to be here all year, but I've got gigs and commitments | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
all over the world, so Derry musicians | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Glenn Rosborough and Jenny Grant are here to help me out. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Glenn plays in Wyldling, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
one of Northern Ireland's most promising bands. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
The spark of creativity they have really reignites the spark | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
that you have, so I'm really looking forward to the eight months, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
and seeing where this is going to go. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
And Jenny is a leading Derry harpist and music teacher. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
It's really inspiring to think that these kids | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
really have so much potential. So I'm really, really excited | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
to see what they're going to come up with. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Time to get out there and meet them. First up is Hannah. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
# I don't care! | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
# I love it! | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
# I don't care! # | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
When it comes to music, this 15-year-old really gives it some. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
She's got a big personality, with a big talent to match. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
I'm loving life! | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
# California girls We're unforgettable | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
# Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top... # | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
She lives for music. Up until now, she's been playing and performing | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
cover versions. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
But recently, she's started writing her own material. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
# I love it! # | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
But while Hannah looks to have all the confidence in the world, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
there is one thing she just can't face... | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
I always think to play me own song, you know, it's a bit of a risk. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
It's always a bit of a risk, like, are they going to like it? | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Are they going to, you know, are they going to hate it? | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
I'm really excited to meet Hannah because, apparently, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
she's a brilliant songwriter and I love lyrics. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
I love story-telling, so I'm hoping that she sings them for me. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
Hello! How are you doing? How's it going? Welcome to Derry! | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Oh, thank you very much! I'm Hannah's mammy. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
Hi, hello. And this is Hannah. Hello! You're really welcome. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
I've heard so much about you! So it's just in here. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
Oh, wow! Cool! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
Who's this guy with the guitar? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
That's my boyfriend. But it's, like, been scrunched up! | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
Every time we fight, I scrunch it up and throw it under my bed! | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
And then when we make up, I stick it back up again! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
So I heard that you only started showing people your songs | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
not too long ago? Is that right? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
Yep? Would I be able to hear one of your songs? | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
Um... Please?! | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
Go on, why don't you go up and show Katy some of your stuff? | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
Oh, yeah. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah! | 0:04:12 | 0:04:17
OK, all right. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
Up until now, the only people who've heard Hannah's songs | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
have been the pop stars on her walls. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
But I think that if she can find the courage to start performing | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
her own work in public, it could be brilliant for her confidence. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
So, it's so mad to have you, like, in my room. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
Because, like, I've all your songs on my phone. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
And, like, it's just mad that you're, like, sitting here. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
Well, hopefully, I'll have some of your songs on my phone soon! | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
Oh, this is just really crazy, like! So what's this song called, then? | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
My Musical Autobiography. So... | 0:04:51 | 0:04:58
# Hi, I'm Hannah | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
# I can't sing that well | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
# If you told me a secret I'd never tell | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
# Unless it was to one of my best friends | 0:05:10 | 0:05:15
# Let's get off the subject | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
# Hi, when I'm all grown-up I want to rock the stage | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
# I want to get older but never age | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
# And I've a slight obsession | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
# With a lazy-eyed man called Russell Howard | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
# Oh-oh-oh-oh | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
# I'ma put on a show | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
# To show you me | 0:05:37 | 0:05:42
# Let you hear my musical autobiography | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
# Oh-oh-oh... # | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Her songwriting is great and I love her lyrics, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
she's really funny, she's got a lot to say. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
And you can really see her identity through her lyrics, you know. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
That song couldn't be about anyone else, it was about Hannah. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
And I'm glad that she picked that one to play me, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
because it really kind of gave me a sense of who she is. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
# Oh-oh-oh. # | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
SHE CHEERS | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
That's amazing! Thank you. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
What an amazing song to just hear everything about you. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
That's, like, brilliant. When did you write that song? | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
A couple of months ago, but I never really played it anywhere. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
I was just kind of restricted... just playing in my room. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
Yeah. I always just kind of played it, like, in here. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
This girl could really go places | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
and we've got some exciting plans for her. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
Someone else with big music dreams is 15-year-old Micaela. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
She is a talented multi-instrumentalist. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
She also loves her regular opportunity to sing every Sunday in church. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:51
I'm quite strong in my faith, so it's wildly important. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
I mean, I know it's like a Sunday morning | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
and you've got to get up really early. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
And, like, the reality is you would love to sleep on! | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
But, like, I enjoy it, getting up and getting ready. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
There's loads of people there, tons of people. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
At the beginning, it can be really nerve-racking. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
If you made a mistake, you'd be like, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
"Oh, dear Lord, no! What have I done?!" | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
But now it's just, I really do take it in my stride. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
And if I make a mistake, well, sure you can't go back and fix it. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
I have dreams to be a singer, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:36
I mean, that's what I go to bed every night and dream about. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
I would love that. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
Well, I can help with this dream. Micaela has a fantastic voice, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
and needs an opportunity that will really test her. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
Before going to school, Glenn is taking Micaela | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
to The Venue - the main stage for all this year's events. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
Oh, look at this! Are you having a laugh?! | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
In just three weeks' time, it will host the Grand Vintage Ball, | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
one of the premier nights on the City of Culture calendar. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
I've organised for Micaela to sing a solo spot, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
in a line-up of stars from the Vintage Scene. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
The event is sold out and 2,000 people are expected. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
That is insane! Oh, my God! | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
I seriously can't get over how massive this place is. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
Like, I was scared before, but now I am definitely petrified, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
because I really don't want to mess up. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
So Micaela's been given this fantastic opportunity, | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
but it's not as easy as just walking out on stage and just singing. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
She's going to have to pick a song, rehearse it, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
and find something to wear in just three weeks. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
So there's lots of hard work ahead. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
Micaela and Hannah are just two of the 13 young people | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
I'm going to be working with throughout the year. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
So I'm here at The Playhouse this morning to meet the kids | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
for the first time as a group, | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
and I can't wait to hear them play their instruments. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
SINGING | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
# You shoot me down, but I won't fall | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
# I am titanium... # | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
Hi, guys, it's lovely to meet you! | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
We've got pianists, singers, DJs and drummers. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
Glenn and Jenny have already got the ball rolling. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
Not bad! Yeah. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
Aw-w! | 0:09:50 | 0:09:51 | |
So this is like the DJ section - you're all together. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
Just talking about different set-ups we're using | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
and stuff like that there, equipment. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
Are you all into quite similar music, or is it quite different? | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
Oh, OK. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:07
It's so exciting to see all these different skills and abilities. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:13
# My time on the outside is over! # | 0:10:13 | 0:10:18
APPLAUSE | 0:10:20 | 0:10:21
But getting to know each other is a two-way street. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
Lovely, that's lovely. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Will you sing now, Katy? | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
Ah! What do you want me to sing? | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
Keep on moving when the lights is on. Yeah? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
You know what, earlier I heard the girls figure out some chords, | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
so will you go and ask them if they'll play for me? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
I've sung his song probably about 3,000 times in my life, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
so hopefully, I won't forget the words! | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
# Cos I will keep on going until they say so | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
# And even when they do it's so hard for me to go | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
# While them others at the cloak room | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01
# And some others out the door | 0:11:01 | 0:11:07
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
# So come and play me just one more song | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
# So you can't scare me with the lights on | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
# Hey, yeah, yea-a-ah | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
# I keep on moving with the lights o-o-on! # | 0:11:28 | 0:11:34
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
So I've met DJs, singer-songwriters, a harp player, a fiddle player. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:45
The spectrum is so wide, which is brilliant, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
because everyone's got their own identity. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
So that's really great and everyone can kind of cheer each other on. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
So I've just heard you all playing and some of you have just started | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
learning and some of you have been playing for years. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
But I just want to let you know that none of that matters, | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
because these next couple of months are all about giving you | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
opportunities that are going to blow your mind, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
inspire you and we're just going to have some fun through music. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
I'm going to get them to work on a song together, | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
which they'll perform later in the year. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
One member of this talented group is 15-year-old singer Eibhin. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
He hasn't always been one ready to thrust himself into the limelight. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
He's always sang away in the background, | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
he wouldn't have been a big, up-the-front-singing type person, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
you know, he would sing about the house and if you asked him | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
to sing stuff again, he always got a wee bit embarrassed about it, | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
like he's doing now cos I'm talking! | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
THEY LAUGH | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
Look, there's Eibhin embarrassed! Who is? Eibhin by chance! | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
But the turning point was winning a school talent competition last year. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
We were sitting in the audience and I was warned not to shout, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
or scream or make an exhibition of him! He did all three! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
THEY LAUGH | 0:12:58 | 0:12:59
He did do all three! | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
And the music started, and he hit the first note, | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
and we couldn't speak. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
And since then, he hasn't looked back. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
The music's sort of my main focus. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
Everything else I just sort of tolerate! | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
His school have recognised this focus and now any time | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
there's a school show or event, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
Eibhin is the man they ask to take the mic. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
But for this performance, he doesn't seem to have done his homework... | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
Writing out my words, because I forgot them. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
More nervous! Just a bit, though. Not so grand now! | 0:13:33 | 0:13:37
It will be fine, anyway, as soon as I go on stage, it will go, | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
won't be as jittery or as jumpy or as pacey. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
# Holding down his job... # | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
Sketchy preparation isn't the surest foundation for performance success. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:51
# Oh, it takes every kind of people | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
# Life's about, yeah... # | 0:13:58 | 0:14:00
I've got plans for Eibhin. But he'll need to focus | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
if he wants to make the most of the opportunity I've got in mind. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
Someone else trying to get to grips with her words is Micaela. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
# I say a little prayer for you! | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
# While combing my hair now... # | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
Micaela is a week into her three week schedule to get ready to sing | 0:14:30 | 0:14:37
I Say A Little Prayer. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
# You-ou-ou... | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
# Please... # | 0:14:41 | 0:14:42
Ah, blah-blah-blah! I hate that bit! | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
What happened? | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
I held the note too long and it's, like, really difficult | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
to come down from. Maybe if you don't put that middle note in? | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
You go... # Ooooh... # | 0:14:52 | 0:14:54
And then go... # Oh-oh-oh-oh! # | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
..instead? OK, yeah. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
It's up to you. Anyway, if you find it easier to have that kind of... | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
I can't do wee triplet notes like that! | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
It's kind of difficult. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:05
# Say I'm in love with you-ou-ou | 0:15:05 | 0:15:10
# Answer my prayer now, baby! # | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
You know at the end of each line in the verse? Uh-huh. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
You do like a natural kind of smile anyway. Uh-huh. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
I'd just extend it that tiny bit, because the more people see | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
that you're having a good time, the more likely they're going to accept... | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
OK. It was great. Thank you. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:25
But I want to see you do it again with a slightly bigger audience. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
Slightly?. Yeah, so I'm going to get your mum and your sister... | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
OK! ..to sit in. Ah, that's grand. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
KNOCKS ON DOOR | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
Come in. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:37
Hello. Sorry to interrupt your TV, but could I borrow you | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
for a few seconds? Yeah, come on in. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
We need an audience, so we do. You're my audience! | 0:15:42 | 0:15:46
Going to be entertained. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:50
Right, OK. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:51
By me! | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53 | |
We're in and I heard Micaela performing... Yeah. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
And I want to see how she does it live in front of a few more people. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
Right. So, are you ready? Yes. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
Grand. I'm ready. Take it away, Michaela! | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
SHE GIGGLES | 0:16:08 | 0:16:09
# Say a little prayer for you | 0:16:12 | 0:16:16
# The moment I wake up... # | 0:16:16 | 0:16:17
She took everything that I said on board, and with the performance | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
then in front of her mum and her sister, you could see | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
she was moving more, she was smiling more, and it was just... | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
straightaway, she took it up. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:27
# We never will part | 0:16:27 | 0:16:28
# Oh, how I love you | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
# Together, together, that's how it must be | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
# To live without you will only mean heart break for me! # | 0:16:33 | 0:16:41
APPLAUSE | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
What do you think? That's excellent! You think? | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
Fair going, I got a shock! | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
Singing a '60s classic is just up Micaela's street. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
She loves vintage style. What she needs next | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
is the perfect outfit for her big night. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
Time to go dress shopping! | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
Hello, how are you? Your poster's up. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
I know, it's really nice. Are you nervous yet? Yes. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
Really? Very. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:13
It will be grand! You'll be fine, you'll be fine. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
# My life was cold... # | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
I'm just in heaven right now. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
# You put the flame on it... # | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
This is definitely a Motown number. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
# This heart of mine... # | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
Yeah, I think we'll do this one. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
# You wrote your name on it... | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
# You wrote your name on it... # | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
What do you think? Stunning. Absolutely stunning. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:42
# I could look away from it... # | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
No, it's not Pretty In Pink! | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
No. No, it's... No, it's far from it! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
It's uncomfortable in pink. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:51
I look like a Vegas Show Girl! | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
A Vegas Show Girl! This is just not happening. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
It's not you. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:57
Micaela, just as an afterthought, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:06
Hello! Give me that! That's pretty. It's gorgeous, isn't it? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:11
And it's got a little bit of bling. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:12
Oooh, this is just the perfect wee combination! | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
Hold on till I get this on. Are you ready? | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
# Cos you make me feel | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
# You make me feel | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
# You make me feel like a natural woman... # | 0:18:24 | 0:18:30
Is that the one you feel? Mm-hm. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
Let's see. Cos we are... the hair is going up. Uh-huh. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
Oh, that's it, that's the one there. Love my dress! | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
Big time, that is the one. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
It is stunning on her. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
Perfect. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
Hi, how's it going? | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
I love Eibhin's voice. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
I think the time is right for him to step up to the next level. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
I've sent Jenny around with the news of a great opportunity. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
I've arranged for him to meet music legend Phil Coulter, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
who will be playing a major City of Culture concert | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
with guests including Glee star Damien McGinity. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
Ah, the proud daddy! | 0:19:19 | 0:19:20
As you might have heard, Phil expects pretty high standards. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
That's why he's getting Damien McGinity to do it. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
So, along with yourself. LAUGHTER | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
No pressure! | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
But because he has such high standards, he has | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
requested that he has a rehearsal with you - how do you feel about it? | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
Aggh! | 0:19:39 | 0:19:40 | |
Derry's answer to Simon Cowell | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
Yes, he's bigger than Simon Cowell. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
Dear God. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
Right, this might be hard for you but I want you to just, off the bat, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:02
without any piano, I want you to sing me something right now. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
Um...OK, any requests? | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
Whatever you're comfortable with, whatever you think you can... | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
you sing with fluidity and in tune, preferably. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
Preferably! Yeah, OK. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
# I set out on a narrow way | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
# Many years ago | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
# Hoping I would find true love | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
# Along the broken road | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
# But I got lost a time or two | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
# Wiped my brow and kept pushing through | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
# I couldn't see how every sign | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
# Pointed straight to you. # | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
OK, you probably pitched that a bit high. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
It was all right. Huh? It was OK. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
No, it wasn't OK, cos you were a bit flat on the top | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
because you pitched it too high Yeah, OK. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
Um, and that's something which you'll have to learn, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
not only about like pitching the right key but when it's not right... | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
Mm-hm. ..it's not right. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
Did I hear that on a previous airing that you forgot your words? | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
I forget, yeah. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:13
You see that, at the level we're talking about, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
the level that you want to aspire to... Mm-hm. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
..that is unforgivable. Yeah. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
I'm going to give you a chance. Yeah. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
I'm going to give you a chance to be part of these concerts | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
that we're doing with the Ulster Orchestra, on the day, or the day | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
before, when we're doing rehearsals and we're doing sound checks, etc, | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
I'll decide how much preparation you've done, how hard you've worked | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
and I'll decide if you're good enough to carry that shot through | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
and how much I'm going to give you to sing, | 0:21:44 | 0:21:46
so the ball's in your court. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:47
I'm giving you the opportunity but it's not a free ride. Yeah. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
OK, the song that I want you to be part of is the new song | 0:21:50 | 0:21:55
that I've written, A Bright Brand New Day. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
# There's a fresh breeze blowing through the city tonight | 0:21:57 | 0:22:03
# As the sun sets over Sheriff's Mountain | 0:22:03 | 0:22:09
# Could it be that we might be winning? | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
# There's a sense of a new beginning | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
# From Creggan to the Waterside | 0:22:15 | 0:22:19
# There's a bright brand new day that's coming | 0:22:21 | 0:22:26
# May all of our dreams take flight | 0:22:26 | 0:22:31
# Sing it out, sing it clear | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
# Sing it so the world can hear | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
# It's a bright brand new day! # | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44
How much of that tune do you remember? | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
Hoo-hoo-hoo! | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
That's your homework, kiddo. OK. Learn that inside out. OK. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
Eibhin would be typical of a 14-year-old | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
who has discovered that he's got a voice and that he can sing. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
Nice man, wasn't he? | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
The ball's in his court. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:09
After just three short weeks, Micaela's big day has dawned. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
Tonight she performs in the Venue to a crowd of 2,000 | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
at the Grand Vintage Ball | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
Micaela, are you nervous? For the night? | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
It's just really scary. There's going to be loads of people. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
But you'll be there so I'll be grand. You'll be like a diva on the stage. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
Micaela, over all the people, will I be able to see? | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
Of course you will! | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
'The only fear is I've never done anything | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
'on this kind of a platform before,' | 0:23:40 | 0:23:42
and I honestly think, when I do realise, like, what's ahead of me, | 0:23:42 | 0:23:47
I'll, like, I don't know what way I'm going to take it! | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
So it can either go really well or really badly, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
so, hopefully it goes well and I don't freak out and just be like, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:58
"No, I can't do this any more!" | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
Micaela devotes the rest of the day to doing everything | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
she can to make sure the big night will go well. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
CAR HORN BEEPS | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
Oh, my God! Is that a limo? | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
Micaela looks the part and is going to travel to her show in style. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:20
We weren't expecting this! | 0:24:20 | 0:24:21
We were going to get a taxi but got a limo instead. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
Now, that's it in there now, Mummy, that big tent. It's huge. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
Before long, the Grand Vintage Ball dance floor starts to fill with | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
the 2,000 sell-out crowd expected for the night. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
Soon the party is swinging with everyone in the vintage spirit... | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
..including Micaela's Music Promise friend Hannah, | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
who has come along to support her. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
It's show time! | 0:25:16 | 0:25:17
Good luck, good luck, good luck. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
# Say a little prayer for you | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
# The moment I wake up | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
# Before I put on my make-up | 0:25:55 | 0:26:03
# While combing my hair now | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
# And wondering what dress to wear now | 0:26:07 | 0:26:11
# I say a little prayer for you | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
# Forever, forever | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
# You'll stay in my heart and I will love you | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
# Forever and ever | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
# We never will part Oh, how I love you | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
# Together, together That's how it must be | 0:26:24 | 0:26:27
# To live without you would only mean heartbreak for me | 0:26:27 | 0:26:32
# Nobody but me | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
# Forever and ever You'll stay in my heart and I | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
# Will love you | 0:26:38 | 0:26:39
# Forever and ever We never will part | 0:26:39 | 0:26:43
# Oh, how I love you | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
# Together, together That is how it must be | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
# To live without you would only mean heartbreak for me, yeah | 0:26:48 | 0:26:56
# My darling, believe me | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
# For me there is no-one else but you | 0:26:59 | 0:27:06
# So please love me too | 0:27:06 | 0:27:10
# Said I'm in love with you | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
# So answer my prayer now, darling | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
# And answer my prayer now, darling, yeah. # | 0:27:17 | 0:27:25
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
Thank you very much. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
Thank you. Thank you so much. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
Yes! | 0:27:40 | 0:27:41 | |
It didn't even seem like it was me. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:47
It just felt like it was like I just walked on | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
and everyone just looked up at me and I looked down at everybody | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
and I just felt like a completely different person. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
Some of your adoring fans. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:56
THEY CHATTER | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
You were absolutely terrific. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
Come here. Good girl. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:03
It was brilliant, like, everything what you done, perfect, | 0:28:03 | 0:28:06
all the movement, the whole mood. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:08
Can I do it again? | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
Go on, please, for the craic! | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
Next time, I'm with Derry's next superstar DJ... | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
In the future I would like to do something really big like a festival. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
..Hannah gets a big gig but will she see it through? | 0:28:20 | 0:28:23
Everything bad that can happen I feel is going to happen. | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
And has Eibhin done enough to make it on stage? | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
The... I'm so sorry. I'm really terrified. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:33
