Hi, I'm Katy B and I love music. And I'm taking | 3:20:33 | 3:20:37
a group of Londonderry kids who all love music too and giving them | 3:20:37 | 3:20:40
an opportunity to perform on the biggest stages I can find. | 3:20:40 | 3:20:43
We take talented young musicians more used to performing | 3:20:50 | 3:20:53
in their bedrooms and put them in front of an audience of thousands. | 3:20:53 | 3:20:57
Big names. | 3:20:59 | 3:21:01
Big performances. And plenty of passion. | 3:21:01 | 3:21:04
This is Music City. | 3:21:05 | 3:21:07
I'm in Derry, which this year is UK City of Culture. This means | 3:21:12 | 3:21:16
its calendar is packed with world class events. | 3:21:16 | 3:21:19
The city is determined that Derry's young people get a chance to | 3:21:21 | 3:21:25
be involved, and have created an initiative called | 3:21:25 | 3:21:27
The Music Promise. | 3:21:27 | 3:21:29
As part of that we scoured Derry's schools | 3:21:31 | 3:21:34
to find 13 keen young musicians to give them the chance to | 3:21:34 | 3:21:37
up their game. Work with some of the artists visiting this year... | 3:21:37 | 3:21:40
I'm already...I'm already liking your hand position, | 3:21:40 | 3:21:43
that's very good! | 3:21:43 | 3:21:44
How are you? I'm Amelia. | 3:21:44 | 3:21:45
..and perform on the biggest stages. | 3:21:45 | 3:21:47
MUSIC: "Lights On" by Katy B | 3:21:49 | 3:21:52
I love music myself. And as a recording artist, | 3:21:52 | 3:21:55
I've been lucky enough to be able to make a life out of it. | 3:21:55 | 3:21:59
# I keep on moving with the lights on | 3:21:59 | 3:22:02
# So come on play me just one more song... # | 3:22:02 | 3:22:06
I can't wait to be involved. | 3:22:06 | 3:22:07
I'd love to be here all year but I've got gigs | 3:22:13 | 3:22:15
and commitments all over the world - so Derry musicians | 3:22:15 | 3:22:18
Glenn Rosborough and Jenny Grant are here to help me out. | 3:22:18 | 3:22:21
SHE SINGS | 3:22:22 | 3:22:25
Glenn plays in Wyldling, | 3:22:27 | 3:22:29
one of northern Irelands most promising bands. | 3:22:29 | 3:22:31
The spark of creativity that they have really reignites | 3:22:31 | 3:22:34
the spark that you have so I'm really forward to the eight months, | 3:22:34 | 3:22:36
and seeing where this is going to go. | 3:22:36 | 3:22:39
And Jenny is a leading Derry harpist and music teacher. | 3:22:39 | 3:22:43
It's really inspiring to think that these kids really have | 3:22:43 | 3:22:46
so much potential. So I'm really, | 3:22:46 | 3:22:48
really excited to see what they're going to come up with. | 3:22:48 | 3:22:51
Last time I met 15-year-old singer/songwriter Hannah, | 3:22:55 | 3:22:59
a big personality with a big talent to match. | 3:22:59 | 3:23:02
She loves performing - but up until now | 3:23:03 | 3:23:05
it's largely been cover versions of other people's songs. | 3:23:05 | 3:23:09
MUSIC: "California Gurls" | 3:23:09 | 3:23:10
# California girls, we're unforgettable... # | 3:23:10 | 3:23:13
When she played me the song she had written herself, I was blown away. | 3:23:14 | 3:23:19
# Oh I'm going to put on a show | 3:23:19 | 3:23:22
# To show you me | 3:23:24 | 3:23:27
# Let you hear my musical autobiography... # | 3:23:29 | 3:23:32
Hannah is reluctant to play her songs in public but I think it would | 3:23:33 | 3:23:37
be great for her if she could get them out there to a big audience. | 3:23:37 | 3:23:40
As a starting point, I've organized for her to be a support act | 3:23:43 | 3:23:46
for Derry music maestro Paul Casey. | 3:23:46 | 3:23:49
If this goes well, there's no telling where she could play next. | 3:23:49 | 3:23:52
The gig is just two weeks away. | 3:23:52 | 3:23:55
And I've sent Glenn to break the news. | 3:23:55 | 3:23:56
So, how do you feel about that? | 3:23:56 | 3:23:58
Really excited but, like, nervous. I kind of feel like I'm going to melt! | 3:23:59 | 3:24:04
So, roughly how many songs are we talking about here? | 3:24:04 | 3:24:07
Phew. I'd say about three. | 3:24:07 | 3:24:09
Three and they are all originals or...? | 3:24:09 | 3:24:12
-All original. -Oh! | 3:24:12 | 3:24:13
I don't know why you're so afraid of playing your songs in front of people. | 3:24:13 | 3:24:17
It's my own original stuff and if, you know, if somebody was to | 3:24:17 | 3:24:20
turn round and be all, "Oh, that's not good," I'd be really, | 3:24:20 | 3:24:23
I'd be really hurt. | 3:24:23 | 3:24:24
In terms of what you'll learn | 3:24:24 | 3:24:26
and in terms of the opportunity it's pretty good, up for it? | 3:24:26 | 3:24:29
-Definitely. -Good. | 3:24:29 | 3:24:31
Last time I also met 15-year-old Eibhin | 3:24:35 | 3:24:39
who's one of Derry's most promising singers. | 3:24:39 | 3:24:42
# He wanted sunshine in his name... # | 3:24:42 | 3:24:44
He has been given the opportunity to perform with music legend | 3:24:45 | 3:24:49
Phil Coulter at a City of Culture Concert - | 3:24:49 | 3:24:52
but only if he can prove to Phil he's good enough to make the grade. | 3:24:52 | 3:24:56
Did I hear that on a - on a previous airing that you forgot your words? | 3:24:58 | 3:25:02
I forgot, yeah. | 3:25:02 | 3:25:04
Yeah, you see, that at the level we're talking about, the level that | 3:25:04 | 3:25:08
you want to aspire to, that... is unforgivable. | 3:25:08 | 3:25:12
Yeah. | 3:25:12 | 3:25:13 | |
In just three weeks, Phil will hear him sing again | 3:25:16 | 3:25:20
- before deciding whether to let him take the stage. | 3:25:20 | 3:25:23
# Tonight mmm... | 3:25:23 | 3:25:24
# Will history provide us... | 3:25:26 | 3:25:30
# That oh da da da... # | 3:25:31 | 3:25:32
But Eibhin is struggling to get to grips with the song that Phil | 3:25:35 | 3:25:38
has given him to learn - accompanied by his mum and Jenny - | 3:25:38 | 3:25:41
I've organised for him to see top theatre director - | 3:25:41 | 3:25:44
Caitriona McLaughlin - to see if she can help him with his performance. | 3:25:44 | 3:25:48
OK. Stop. Stop. | 3:25:48 | 3:25:50
I've worked with singers before and I've come up with this problem | 3:25:50 | 3:25:54
because what happens is you get so focused on trying to make a | 3:25:54 | 3:25:57
lovely sound, that you forget you're actually trying to tell a story. | 3:25:57 | 3:26:01
-Yeah. -And I don't think you, especially by the way you walk out | 3:26:01 | 3:26:05
and begin, I don't think you've really realised yet that | 3:26:05 | 3:26:08
you're actually telling us a story. | 3:26:08 | 3:26:10
You've come out there as if you were going to be shot, whereas | 3:26:10 | 3:26:15
you're coming out to tell us that there's a new future for all of us. | 3:26:15 | 3:26:18
Your voice is great, your voice will be brilliant, | 3:26:18 | 3:26:21
but you're...you're mixing up all the words as well. | 3:26:21 | 3:26:23
Like Phil Coulter will... not let you... | 3:26:23 | 3:26:26
-Rip me apart. -He won't let you on stage. | 3:26:26 | 3:26:28
-Do you want to do this? -Yeah. | 3:26:28 | 3:26:31
-Do you? -Yeah. | 3:26:31 | 3:26:32
I don't think you do. The way you're acting at the minute, | 3:26:32 | 3:26:36
I don't even know if you want to be a singer. No, seriously. | 3:26:36 | 3:26:39
I mean, it's like...it's like everything is so painful for you. | 3:26:39 | 3:26:42
-Everything is painful for me! -It shouldn't be. | 3:26:42 | 3:26:44
Do you think she's right or is she completely wrong? | 3:26:44 | 3:26:46
She is right, aye. | 3:26:46 | 3:26:48
Can you find a phrase, three words that you like the sound of? | 3:26:48 | 3:26:53
The chorus, the... | 3:26:53 | 3:26:55
Say the chorus to me. | 3:26:55 | 3:26:56
There's a bright, brand new day a-coming, | 3:26:58 | 3:27:00
step out of the darkness and into the light. | 3:27:00 | 3:27:03
Say that to me and mean it. | 3:27:03 | 3:27:05
Ahh la-la. | 3:27:05 | 3:27:06
If that's all we get out of today, you convince me | 3:27:07 | 3:27:11
that something is going to change. | 3:27:11 | 3:27:13
But I don't think anything's going to change. | 3:27:13 | 3:27:15
It's the same, it's not a new day, it's the same day! | 3:27:15 | 3:27:18
-Is tomorrow the same day? -Yes! | 3:27:18 | 3:27:21
-As today? -Basically. | 3:27:21 | 3:27:23
What makes it the same? | 3:27:23 | 3:27:25
Well, you wake up, go to school, go to bed that... | 3:27:25 | 3:27:28
-What have I got in my hands here? -Words to a song. | 3:27:28 | 3:27:31
A song that you're going to do what with...? | 3:27:31 | 3:27:33
-Perform. -Where? | 3:27:33 | 3:27:35
In...in venue. | 3:27:35 | 3:27:38
-With how many people watching you? -Quite a bit! | 3:27:38 | 3:27:41
-So is that the same as every day? -No. | 3:27:41 | 3:27:43
So, can you make that line about you singing this song? | 3:27:43 | 3:27:46
Right... now sing it. | 3:27:46 | 3:27:50
# There's a bright, brand new day that's coming # | 3:27:50 | 3:27:56
# May all of our dreams take flight # | 3:27:56 | 3:28:01
# Sing it out | 3:28:01 | 3:28:03
# Sing it clear sing it so the world can hear | 3:28:03 | 3:28:09
# It's a bright brand new day. # | 3:28:09 | 3:28:16
Beautiful. | 3:28:17 | 3:28:19
After two short weeks of practice, it's the day of Hannah's | 3:28:21 | 3:28:25
first ever gig, but even budding pop stars have to go to school. | 3:28:25 | 3:28:30
So, it's my first ever gig and I'm really nervous - | 3:28:30 | 3:28:33
haven't been able to concentrate at all today. | 3:28:33 | 3:28:36
I'm really scared in case I forget my words. Or I forget - | 3:28:36 | 3:28:41
if I like mess up the chords. | 3:28:41 | 3:28:43
When a girl is up against it, what she needs is her best friend. | 3:28:45 | 3:28:49
Catherine comes round to help with the preparations. | 3:28:49 | 3:28:51
-Are you excited? -A little bit. | 3:28:51 | 3:28:54
Top of the priority list is what to wear. | 3:28:54 | 3:28:57
-Hannah! -What? | 3:28:57 | 3:28:59
You have half an hour to get ready. | 3:28:59 | 3:29:02
If you want Catherine to do your make-up she has half | 3:29:02 | 3:29:04
an hour before she has to go - please just wash your face, | 3:29:04 | 3:29:08
put yourself into some pyjamas till you get your clothes on | 3:29:08 | 3:29:11
and do your make-up. | 3:29:11 | 3:29:12
Hannah is normally never, ever, ever, ever nervous, | 3:29:19 | 3:29:23
so it's kind of weird. | 3:29:23 | 3:29:25
I've looked in the spare room, I've looked in the drawers, | 3:29:25 | 3:29:28
I've looked in your wardrobe - now, have you any idea where it could be? | 3:29:28 | 3:29:31
Oh, look! | 3:29:31 | 3:29:33
You see, that skirt isn't suitable. | 3:29:33 | 3:29:37
-It is suitable. -No, it's too clingy. | 3:29:37 | 3:29:39
-It's not too clingy. -It is too clingy. | 3:29:39 | 3:29:41
-It's not too clingy. -It is too clingy. | 3:29:41 | 3:29:42
-Are you going to listen to her? -Listen to your mother. | 3:29:42 | 3:29:45
BOTH: Ooooooo. | 3:29:45 | 3:29:47
You are a pair of eejits. I'm going to kill the two of you. | 3:29:47 | 3:29:49
Go away! | 3:29:49 | 3:29:51
-Hannah! -What! | 3:29:51 | 3:29:53
Listen, it's time to go! Are you ready? | 3:29:53 | 3:29:56
No! | 3:29:56 | 3:29:57 | |
Someone just about to start their Music City journey is Shay. | 3:30:04 | 3:30:08
When this 13-year-old kick boxing fanatic is not | 3:30:08 | 3:30:11
perfecting his round-house kick, he's busy becoming | 3:30:11 | 3:30:14
the City of Derry's next superstar DJ. | 3:30:14 | 3:30:17
When you're playing dance music to other people and they're dancing, | 3:30:21 | 3:30:24
it kind of makes you happy because you know you're providing the music. | 3:30:24 | 3:30:27
And you're making them dance, and making them be happy. | 3:30:27 | 3:30:30
Two years ago | 3:30:31 | 3:30:33
he persuaded his mum to buy him all the latest DJ equipment | 3:30:33 | 3:30:36
so he could start mixing tunes and playing gigs. | 3:30:36 | 3:30:39
DANCE MUSIC | 3:30:39 | 3:30:41
But mum Sinead didn't realise just how loud DJs like to play. | 3:30:41 | 3:30:46
Shay! Can you turn that music down! | 3:30:46 | 3:30:49
I'm trying to have a cup of tea in peace! | 3:30:49 | 3:30:52
He's just raring to get out of the bedroom | 3:30:54 | 3:30:56
and get an audience up on its feet dancing. | 3:30:56 | 3:30:59
So far, he's played birthday parties, family events | 3:30:59 | 3:31:02
and his local community centre but this DJ has big dreams. | 3:31:02 | 3:31:07
In the future I would like to do, um, something really big | 3:31:07 | 3:31:10
like a festival, or just play in a really big club. | 3:31:10 | 3:31:14
Today he's gearing up for his biggest gig to date - | 3:31:14 | 3:31:17
supporting local dance music legends Japanese Popstars | 3:31:17 | 3:31:21
at one of Derry's best music venues, The Nerve Centre. | 3:31:21 | 3:31:25
I'm impressed that Shay is already playing the best local venues | 3:31:26 | 3:31:29
but I'm even more impressed that he got this gig by just | 3:31:29 | 3:31:32
going to the venue and asking. | 3:31:32 | 3:31:34
It's true what they say, if you don't ask, you don't get. | 3:31:34 | 3:31:38
I was explaining to the man on the counter that I'm a DJ | 3:31:38 | 3:31:41
and he said, "Would you like a gig?" | 3:31:41 | 3:31:43
I said aye, and then the rest is history | 3:31:43 | 3:31:46
And now Shay has got his big gig, it needs big planning. | 3:31:46 | 3:31:50
There could be up to 500 people at the event. | 3:31:50 | 3:31:53
Lap top. That's where all my songs are. | 3:31:53 | 3:31:55
When you're DJing, you have to take a lot of things. | 3:31:55 | 3:31:57
The few things that I like to do is, um, make sure | 3:31:57 | 3:31:59
I have everything, you know, a list, check it - put it in me back pocket, | 3:31:59 | 3:32:03
and when I'm leaving, check it off again, make sure I have everything. | 3:32:03 | 3:32:06
With everything listed and checked, it's showtime. | 3:32:06 | 3:32:09
DANCE MUSIC | 3:32:11 | 3:32:14
Shay is playing a blinding set, | 3:32:26 | 3:32:29
the beats are right, the lights are perfect and the graphics | 3:32:29 | 3:32:32
are stunning but there's just one thing missing... | 3:32:32 | 3:32:35
..a crowd to enjoy it. | 3:32:37 | 3:32:40
An empty room, it's like... | 3:32:42 | 3:32:44
just like looking into darkness, it puts you down a bit, kind of. | 3:32:44 | 3:32:47
You do feel a bit less excited when there's not of lot of people there. | 3:32:47 | 3:32:50
I'm so disappointed for Shay, | 3:32:50 | 3:32:52
it's such a shame that no-one was there to see him perform. | 3:32:52 | 3:32:56
But he should know that dealing with knockbacks like this is all | 3:32:56 | 3:32:59
part of learning how to succeed in music. | 3:32:59 | 3:33:02
I remember gigs where I would play | 3:33:02 | 3:33:04
and the only other people watching were the other bands that | 3:33:04 | 3:33:07
were playing on the same night! So, you have to think of it | 3:33:07 | 3:33:11
sometimes as like good practice, because you can think, | 3:33:11 | 3:33:14
actually, there's no pressure. But you're still in that environment | 3:33:14 | 3:33:17
so by the time that the people do get there, | 3:33:17 | 3:33:19
you're just, like, killing it. | 3:33:19 | 3:33:20
I'm going to make sure that next time Shay performs | 3:33:22 | 3:33:24
he'll have an audience to play to. | 3:33:24 | 3:33:27
For Hannah, her first time in front of an audience has come, | 3:33:36 | 3:33:39
the venue has sold out. | 3:33:39 | 3:33:41
SHE PLAYS GUITAR | 3:33:49 | 3:33:51
I'm really nervous. | 3:33:51 | 3:33:53
I haven't gotten through the whole set list yet | 3:33:53 | 3:33:58
without like making at least one mistake. | 3:33:58 | 3:34:01
I don't know what she'll be like when there's a room full | 3:34:01 | 3:34:03
and everybody's listening. I don't know. | 3:34:03 | 3:34:05
I just...I'm worried about her, but, sure, I'm always | 3:34:05 | 3:34:07
worried about her, spend my life worrying about her. | 3:34:07 | 3:34:10
300 people are taking their seats. | 3:34:10 | 3:34:12
Backstage, Hannah is waiting for her moment. | 3:34:12 | 3:34:15
There's nothing I love more than just playing music | 3:34:15 | 3:34:19
and making music - so I need to not let the nerves get to me, just... | 3:34:19 | 3:34:24
CLATTER | 3:34:25 | 3:34:27
Just everything...bad that can happen I feel is going to happen... | 3:34:27 | 3:34:34
now. | 3:34:34 | 3:34:36 | |
SHE SIGHS | 3:34:37 | 3:34:39
APPLAUSE | 3:34:39 | 3:34:41
Hello. | 3:34:47 | 3:34:48
# Hi, I'm Hannah | 3:34:56 | 3:34:59
# I can't sing that well | 3:34:59 | 3:35:01
# If you told me a secret I'd never tell | 3:35:01 | 3:35:05
# Unless it was to one of my best friends | 3:35:05 | 3:35:10
# Let's get off the subject | 3:35:10 | 3:35:12
# Hi, even I'm all grown-up | 3:35:12 | 3:35:14
# I want to rock the stage | 3:35:14 | 3:35:16
# I want to get older but never age | 3:35:16 | 3:35:20
# And I've slight obsession with a lazy eyed man named Russell Howard | 3:35:20 | 3:35:26
# Oh, I'm a put on a show | 3:35:26 | 3:35:31
# To show you me | 3:35:31 | 3:35:35
# Let you hear my musical autobiography | 3:35:35 | 3:35:42
# Oh... # | 3:35:42 | 3:35:43
I am so pleased. Hannah did so well. It was an amazing performance. | 3:35:43 | 3:35:47
The whole crowd just settled down straightaway | 3:35:47 | 3:35:49
when she sat down and there you could hear a pin drop, | 3:35:49 | 3:35:52
everyone was so intrigued with what she had to say through her songs. | 3:35:52 | 3:35:58
# Oh, whoa. # | 3:35:58 | 3:36:02
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 3:36:02 | 3:36:04
Class, wasn't it? | 3:36:26 | 3:36:28
I am on...what do you call it...cloud nine. | 3:36:28 | 3:36:31
I'm really pleased, Hannah. Well done. | 3:36:31 | 3:36:33
I'm so happy. | 3:36:33 | 3:36:35
For your first gig, now, it's pretty damn good. | 3:36:35 | 3:36:39
I'm so happy that's over. | 3:36:39 | 3:36:42
Well, I'm not really. I want to do it all again. I want to do it again. | 3:36:42 | 3:36:45
I knew she'd say that, | 3:36:45 | 3:36:46
because performing on stage is such a great experience. | 3:36:46 | 3:36:50
# And I still suck my thumb | 3:36:50 | 3:36:52
# I'm going to finish up around here | 3:36:52 | 3:36:53
# Cos my fingers are getting numb. # | 3:36:53 | 3:36:55
Music City isn't just about individual performances. | 3:36:59 | 3:37:02
Everyone will have to work together as a group | 3:37:02 | 3:37:05
and I have a definite plan about what we can all do. | 3:37:05 | 3:37:08
I hope they like it. | 3:37:08 | 3:37:10
'Hey, guys, it's Katy. | 3:37:10 | 3:37:11
'Sorry I can't I be there with you right now, I'm in the studio. | 3:37:11 | 3:37:14
'Now, I've been thinking long and hard about what we can do | 3:37:14 | 3:37:17
'to include everyone's talents and I've decided | 3:37:17 | 3:37:19
'we can make our own unique version of an iconic song by a local band. | 3:37:19 | 3:37:23
'The song is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol | 3:37:23 | 3:37:26
'and I really want you to put your own unique twist on it. | 3:37:26 | 3:37:29
'So I am super, super excited, and I hope you are too. | 3:37:29 | 3:37:33
'This is a big challenge, | 3:37:33 | 3:37:35
'so it's going to take such a lot of hard work, so get to it. | 3:37:35 | 3:37:38
'Good luck and I'll see you soon.' | 3:37:38 | 3:37:40
But I'm not sure my choice of song | 3:37:40 | 3:37:42
has gone down a storm with everyone. | 3:37:42 | 3:37:44
It's always playing when someone gets put out of X Factor. | 3:37:44 | 3:37:46
Everybody keeps saying that they hear it all the time, | 3:37:46 | 3:37:49
so it's played out. | 3:37:49 | 3:37:50
It's just a challenge like. Come on you, can yous not...? | 3:37:50 | 3:37:53
Do you not think you can do anything with it? | 3:37:53 | 3:37:55
Like, it has it has potential, like. Do you know what I mean? | 3:37:55 | 3:37:59
-Well, this is... -SHE LAUGHS | 3:37:59 | 3:38:00
Snow Patrol, has potential. | 3:38:00 | 3:38:05
The whole point of this is that we don't want it | 3:38:05 | 3:38:08
to sound like Snow Patrol, we want it to sound like you. | 3:38:08 | 3:38:11
# Would you lie with me and just forget the world? # | 3:38:11 | 3:38:14
Eibhin has just two weeks to go | 3:38:25 | 3:38:27
to make the song Phil Coulter gave him to learn his own, | 3:38:27 | 3:38:30
but he is still struggling with it... | 3:38:30 | 3:38:32
# Brand new day that's coming... # | 3:38:33 | 3:38:37
Blah! Nah-ha. | 3:38:37 | 3:38:39
..especially getting the words right. | 3:38:39 | 3:38:41
I'm here to help. | 3:38:43 | 3:38:45
How are you feeling? | 3:38:47 | 3:38:48
-Yeah, terrified completely, really. -Terrified? | 3:38:48 | 3:38:51
-It's going to be awful. -Oh, why are you saying that for? | 3:38:51 | 3:38:54
I'm going to mess up my lines or something and... Oh, God! | 3:38:54 | 3:38:57
No, you won't, you won't. | 3:38:57 | 3:39:00
-Oh, my gosh, this looks amazing! -There you are. | 3:39:01 | 3:39:04
-Ladies first. There you are, sir. -Cheers. -Enjoy. | 3:39:04 | 3:39:08
If I need to learn a song, I'll put the song on my phone | 3:39:08 | 3:39:11
or on my MP3, and I'll just keep playing it over and over again. | 3:39:11 | 3:39:15
Are you not sick of it by the end of it? | 3:39:15 | 3:39:17
The feeling of going on stage un-prepared is like torture. | 3:39:17 | 3:39:21
It's like the most horrible feeling, that you can give to yourself, | 3:39:21 | 3:39:25
so I just think, I don't want that feeling. | 3:39:25 | 3:39:28
I want to be able to go on stage, be confident, | 3:39:28 | 3:39:30
have fun, enjoy it, you know really think about like performing it, | 3:39:30 | 3:39:34
and think about the emotion rather | 3:39:34 | 3:39:36
-than thinking about the technical words and the notes, you know? -Yeah. | 3:39:36 | 3:39:39
'Eating ice cream with Eibhin is the cushy job.' | 3:39:40 | 3:39:43
I sent Glenn out on a wet and windy mission | 3:39:45 | 3:39:48
to reveal news of a big opportunity. | 3:39:48 | 3:39:50
I've been thinking about Shay's talents | 3:39:52 | 3:39:54
and I think the time has come for him to know | 3:39:54 | 3:39:56
what it feels like to play at a big event. | 3:39:56 | 3:39:59
-I told you you'd need wellies. -Yep. | 3:39:59 | 3:40:02
But if Shay wants to make the big time, | 3:40:02 | 3:40:04
he's going to have to climb a mountain...for real. | 3:40:04 | 3:40:08
Shay, we're up a mountain, it's freezing, it's windy | 3:40:08 | 3:40:12
and it's rainy and muddy. You're probably wondering why you're here. | 3:40:12 | 3:40:15
-I am. -Katy B's going to explain. | 3:40:15 | 3:40:18
'Hey, Shay, it's Katy. I'm stuck in the recording studio, | 3:40:20 | 3:40:23
'but I'm taking a little of the time out to tell you about your big gig. | 3:40:23 | 3:40:28
'It might not look like much now, | 3:40:28 | 3:40:30
'but in a few weeks, these muddy fields | 3:40:30 | 3:40:32
'will be transformed into Northern Ireland's biggest music festival. | 3:40:32 | 3:40:36
'All sorts of bands are going to be playing on massive stages | 3:40:36 | 3:40:39
'and you are going to be up there with them | 3:40:39 | 3:40:41
'playing some of the biggest tunes too. | 3:40:41 | 3:40:43
'I've managed to get you a slot | 3:40:43 | 3:40:45
'just before Radio 1 DJ Philly Taggart plays, | 3:40:45 | 3:40:48
'so there's going to be a really big crowd. | 3:40:48 | 3:40:50
'It's going to be absolutely amazing, | 3:40:50 | 3:40:53
'but you need to make sure you start practising right now.' | 3:40:53 | 3:40:56
So, what do you think? | 3:40:56 | 3:40:57
-Um...speechless. -Speechless? | 3:40:57 | 3:41:01
Looking out here, | 3:41:01 | 3:41:02
can you imagine that this is going to be a massive festival? | 3:41:02 | 3:41:05
No, I can just see a field. | 3:41:05 | 3:41:08
It means a lot that Katy B told me that I was going to be playing | 3:41:08 | 3:41:11
at a festival, because it's something I've always dreamed about | 3:41:11 | 3:41:14
and for the next four weeks, all I'll be doing is just making my set, | 3:41:14 | 3:41:17
getting ready, getting prepared for everything, | 3:41:17 | 3:41:20
and hopefully it goes well. | 3:41:20 | 3:41:21
For Eibhin, preparation time | 3:41:29 | 3:41:31
for working on Phil Coulter's song has run out. | 3:41:31 | 3:41:33
He's going to audition for Phil to see if he's done enough | 3:41:35 | 3:41:38
to earn his place in tonight's City of Culture concert. | 3:41:38 | 3:41:41
Ah! How you doing, Eibhin? | 3:41:42 | 3:41:44
Not so bad. How are you? | 3:41:44 | 3:41:46
Not so bad, kiddo. Have you been busy? You doing exams and stuff? | 3:41:46 | 3:41:50
No, I just finished. Yesterday, actually, I had my last one. | 3:41:50 | 3:41:54
In between your exam work and your revision and all of that, | 3:41:54 | 3:41:58
have you boned up on the song? | 3:41:58 | 3:41:59
-Dear God, aye. -Yeah? "Dear God, aye?" | 3:41:59 | 3:42:02
-I haven't worked for anything as hard in my life. -Yeah? | 3:42:02 | 3:42:05
-Yeah, ins and outs and all the words. -Good. | 3:42:05 | 3:42:07
-Do you want to try it then? -Sure. | 3:42:07 | 3:42:09
The... I'm so sorry - I'm really terrified. | 3:42:20 | 3:42:23
# And there's a new moon rising over Derry tonight | 3:42:26 | 3:42:33
# Like a sign Like a promise for tomorrow... # | 3:42:33 | 3:42:39
I think you've done enough work now to convince me | 3:42:39 | 3:42:41
that I should give you a shot. | 3:42:41 | 3:42:43
When you get that Ulster Orchestra and the Cordella Choir | 3:42:43 | 3:42:46
and everything else, it's going to be monstrous, all right? | 3:42:46 | 3:42:50
OK, good boy. | 3:42:50 | 3:42:51
-Well? -I'm doing it. | 3:42:55 | 3:42:57
-Well done. -Oh, that's brilliant. -You relieved? | 3:43:00 | 3:43:02
And monstrous it promises to be. | 3:43:06 | 3:43:08
He'll be on stage singing the biggest song of the night | 3:43:08 | 3:43:11
with not only Phil Coulter, but also Glee star Damien McGinty. | 3:43:11 | 3:43:15
It's all got very real all of a sudden. | 3:43:15 | 3:43:18
-Eibhin? -Yeah? | 3:43:18 | 3:43:19
-You're going to do the second half of the second chorus... -OK. | 3:43:22 | 3:43:26
..by yourself. Damien's going to do the first half | 3:43:26 | 3:43:28
-you're going to do the second half. -OK. | 3:43:28 | 3:43:30
Then stay where you are, and then the choir will be | 3:43:30 | 3:43:32
doing like the third - you sing along. | 3:43:32 | 3:43:35
Phil is trusting Eibhin with the two most important lines | 3:43:35 | 3:43:37
of the most important song of the night. | 3:43:37 | 3:43:39
-Sing it clear, sing it so the world can...? -Hear. -It's a...? | 3:43:39 | 3:43:43
-Bright. -Right, you got it? -Yep. -OK. | 3:43:43 | 3:43:46
Cheers. | 3:43:46 | 3:43:47
And during the sound check, | 3:43:48 | 3:43:50
someone is having trouble with their lines. And guess what? | 3:43:50 | 3:43:52
It's not Eibhin. | 3:43:52 | 3:43:54
# Step out of the darkness and into sun... # | 3:43:54 | 3:43:58
-Stand here in the light... -Stand here in the light. | 3:43:58 | 3:44:01
Next! | 3:44:01 | 3:44:03 | |
Want to try it again with the right words this time? | 3:44:03 | 3:44:05
Stand here in the light, it's a bright band new day. | 3:44:05 | 3:44:09
-Our voices will all unite... -May our voices all unite? | 3:44:09 | 3:44:12
No, not "may". Our voices will all unite. | 3:44:12 | 3:44:13
Our voices will all unite... May would not make any sense. | 3:44:13 | 3:44:16
-No, it wouldn't. -Our voices will all unite. | 3:44:16 | 3:44:18
-Listen, this is Derry, not LA. OK? -Yes. | 3:44:18 | 3:44:23
# There's a bright brand-new day that's coming... # | 3:44:23 | 3:44:26
It's show time. | 3:44:28 | 3:44:30
FANFARE | 3:44:38 | 3:44:40
MC: Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome home, Phil Coulter. | 3:44:40 | 3:44:43
APPLAUSE | 3:44:43 | 3:44:46
Enjoy it, because as Phil says to me when I was 14, it goes by in a heartbeat. | 3:44:47 | 3:44:50
You might not believe it now when you're sitting there very scared before you go on stage, | 3:44:50 | 3:44:54
but trust me, when you're finished and you're walking off and the people are going crazy, | 3:44:54 | 3:44:58
you'll wake up tomorrow morning, and you'll think to yourself, | 3:44:58 | 3:45:01
dang, did that really happen? | 3:45:01 | 3:45:03
Have a good time, man, you've worked for it. | 3:45:03 | 3:45:05
-PHIL COULTER: -'And singing this new song, | 3:45:05 | 3:45:07
'first of all I'm going to let Codetta back...' | 3:45:07 | 3:45:10
Eibhin's moment has come. | 3:45:10 | 3:45:13
And I'm one of the old brigade at this stage, | 3:45:13 | 3:45:16
but I think the future of Derry | 3:45:16 | 3:45:18
is in the hands of the hands of the young kids | 3:45:18 | 3:45:20
and so I'm going to invite first of all Damian McGinty... | 3:45:20 | 3:45:24
APPLAUSE | 3:45:24 | 3:45:26
..and a young 14-year-old kid. | 3:45:26 | 3:45:29
A young 14-year-old kid called Eibhin. | 3:45:29 | 3:45:31
I promised him that I'd give him a shot. | 3:45:31 | 3:45:33
APPLAUSE | 3:45:33 | 3:45:35
This is Bright Brand New Day. | 3:45:40 | 3:45:43
# There's a fresh breeze blowing through the city tonight | 3:45:45 | 3:45:51
# As the sun sets over Sheriff's Mountain | 3:45:51 | 3:45:57
# Could it be that we might be winning? | 3:45:57 | 3:45:59
# There's a sense of a new beginning | 3:45:59 | 3:46:03
# From Creggan to the Waterside | 3:46:03 | 3:46:06
# And there's a new dawn over Londonderry today | 3:46:09 | 3:46:15
# Nevermore can our history divide us | 3:46:15 | 3:46:21
# For the planets are all aligning | 3:46:21 | 3:46:24
# And the future is brightly shining | 3:46:24 | 3:46:27
# For Derry our time has come at last | 3:46:27 | 3:46:31
# There's a bright brand new day that's coming | 3:46:32 | 3:46:39
# Step out of the darkness and stand here in the light | 3:46:39 | 3:46:45
# There's a bright brand new day that's coming | 3:46:45 | 3:46:51
# Our voices will all unite | 3:46:51 | 3:46:56
# Sing it out, sing it clear | 3:46:56 | 3:47:00
# Sing it so the world can hear | 3:47:00 | 3:47:03
# It's a bright brand new day | 3:47:05 | 3:47:11
ALL: # Our voices will all unite | 3:47:18 | 3:47:23
# Sing it out, sing it clear | 3:47:23 | 3:47:26
# Sing it so the world can hear | 3:47:26 | 3:47:29
# It's a bright brand new day. # | 3:47:34 | 3:47:42
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 3:47:46 | 3:47:49
You were amazing. | 3:48:04 | 3:48:06
That was amazing. So emotional, seriously. | 3:48:08 | 3:48:11
I thought I was going to explode. It was brilliant. | 3:48:11 | 3:48:14
You could hear in his first two words, he was a wee bit nervous | 3:48:16 | 3:48:19
and then when the crowd started getting along, | 3:48:19 | 3:48:21
he was like "Oh, God what's going on here?" | 3:48:21 | 3:48:23
And then he blew everybody away. It's unbelievable. | 3:48:23 | 3:48:25
-Was it good? -Oh, you delivered, yeah. That's a good start. | 3:48:25 | 3:48:28
You are the age that Damian was when I heard him first, you know, | 3:48:28 | 3:48:32
that's the significance of that. And it's like, kind of, handing the | 3:48:32 | 3:48:34
torch to a new generation because I'll be long gone | 3:48:34 | 3:48:38
when you're up and doing...when you live up to your potential. | 3:48:38 | 3:48:41
-Anyway, well done. -Cheers for that. -God bless. Thanks a lot. Take care. | 3:48:41 | 3:48:44
'Next time, I get to get to grips with some traditional music...' | 3:48:44 | 3:48:49
A lot like the stuff you're doing (!) | 3:48:49 | 3:48:51
Yeah (!) | 3:48:51 | 3:48:53
'..I deliver surprise news to Hannah...' | 3:48:53 | 3:48:55
I'm here to tell you about your next gig. | 3:48:55 | 3:48:58
