Right, let's get 2017 started in style, shall we? | :00:30. | :00:31.
Lots of people queuing for photos of a sign. | :00:32. | :00:41.
A motorcycle vest with built-in airbag? | :00:42. | :00:46.
Every January, Las Vegas hosts the massive Consumer Electronics | :00:47. | :00:56.
Show, and if you have a product to launch, | :00:57. | :00:59.
And that's why I am being followed by a drone, | :01:00. | :01:10.
specifically, the hover camera Passport drone. | :01:11. | :01:15.
First one I have seen which follows you not by tracking a signal | :01:16. | :01:18.
from your mobile phone, but instead by locking on to a face | :01:19. | :01:22.
You can tell it which face to follow by tapping on it in the accompanying | :01:23. | :01:28.
And the latest version will let you scan and upload your face | :01:29. | :01:32.
to the drone so it can find and recognise you automatically. | :01:33. | :01:37.
The theory is that you then don't need the phone at all. | :01:38. | :01:42.
The drone knows and loves your face, just like a loyal puppy. | :01:43. | :01:50.
And, with guarded blades and sensors underneath to help it steer clear | :01:51. | :01:53.
of obstacles, it certainly seems safe and light enough to fly | :01:54. | :01:58.
in amongst other people, or indeed to grab it out of the air | :01:59. | :02:02.
Unbelievably, CES is now in its 50th year, and in that time it's got | :02:03. | :02:12.
The show has spread beyond the walls of the Las Vegas Convention Centre | :02:13. | :02:21.
to the surrounding hotels, and we have seen all sorts of ideas | :02:22. | :02:24.
The event might have grown, but the technology, | :02:25. | :02:32.
The TV screens have got so thin that they blend into the walls, | :02:33. | :02:41.
so thin you can peel them on and off. | :02:42. | :02:56.
And in amongst the major companies are a number of tiny companies. Marc | :02:57. | :03:04.
has been checking some of them out. Most people understand that if I do | :03:05. | :03:10.
this with my fingers it means However, if I am wearing this strap | :03:11. | :03:14.
when I make that gesture my hand becomes part of the telephone itself | :03:15. | :03:20.
and can send and receive calls. The strap has a little body | :03:21. | :03:23.
conducting unit in here which sends vibrations down my hand | :03:24. | :03:26.
and when I stick my finger in my ear, they become | :03:27. | :03:29.
amplified sound. There is a microphone | :03:30. | :03:31.
just in the strap there, The finished thing looks | :03:32. | :03:33.
like a normal watch strap and can be Now, when you want to hang up, | :03:34. | :03:42.
that's simplicity itself. All you've got to do | :03:43. | :03:46.
is take your hand away Health is once again | :03:47. | :03:49.
a big theme here at CES. And, whilst more people than ever | :03:50. | :03:52.
are following gluten-free, dairy-free or other sorts | :03:53. | :03:55.
of specialist diets, they don't necessarily need | :03:56. | :03:57.
to be unless they've had And that's something that this | :03:58. | :03:59.
device aims to overcome by helping people create the perfect diet | :04:00. | :04:03.
for their own personal digestive Air connects via bluetooth, | :04:04. | :04:06.
and its mission is to miniaturise a breath test that | :04:07. | :04:13.
gastroenterologists have been It analyses reaction to various | :04:14. | :04:15.
forms of carbohydrate, This is based on the idea that, | :04:16. | :04:20.
if you consume a food that you can't break down, then it will ferment | :04:21. | :04:31.
in the gut, and from that point chemicals will disperse | :04:32. | :04:35.
into the bloodstream. That blood will be making its way | :04:36. | :04:40.
into the lungs, and then when you breathe | :04:41. | :04:43.
out you'll be able to analyse how So, once it learns what works | :04:44. | :04:46.
for you, it should be able to help | :04:47. | :04:50.
you customise your diet as the finished app's food database | :04:51. | :04:52.
indicates how likely So, if you find the answer, | :04:53. | :04:55.
all that's left to do is actually stick | :04:56. | :05:02.
to the lifestyle This year's big theme | :05:03. | :05:03.
at CES was cars. And, as always, it's often the most | :05:04. | :05:13.
outrageous concepts that grab Rinspeed has previously proposed | :05:14. | :05:16.
a car with its own deployable drone. Well, now it's got one that has | :05:17. | :05:26.
a space-age cockpit, with more glass | :05:27. | :05:29.
than a greenhouse, which is quite Yes, that's a garden | :05:30. | :05:31.
in the dashboard. Well, so you get a nice smell | :05:32. | :05:36.
when you're driving, of course, and you can | :05:37. | :05:39.
even take part of it Don't forget to switch the fan on, | :05:40. | :05:42.
so you get that lovely whiff. Actually, a lot of the more serious | :05:43. | :05:48.
car stuff is happening in small steps, incrementally, so it's harder | :05:49. | :05:51.
to grab the headlines. That said, Marc Cieslak has | :05:52. | :05:55.
just been for a couple There's a certain German car-maker | :05:56. | :05:57.
that boasts of building the ultimate But here at CES 2017, | :05:58. | :06:09.
most of the motor manufacturers seem intent on building the ultimate | :06:10. | :06:15.
self-driving machine. It isn't just motor manufacturers | :06:16. | :06:21.
that are showing off They're doing it with the help | :06:22. | :06:24.
of tech companies, as well. This vehicle is fitted | :06:25. | :06:31.
with a system called BB8, which has been created by NVIDIA, | :06:32. | :06:35.
a company most famous for manufacturing | :06:36. | :06:38.
high-end graphics chips. Artificial intelligence software | :06:39. | :06:46.
which learns helped by sensors have | :06:47. | :06:49.
trained BB8 to be able Here, an obstacle has just | :06:50. | :06:50.
appeared in the route that we were going to take to get | :06:51. | :06:54.
to the other end of this track. The car has decided that they'd | :06:55. | :07:01.
better not drive into that obstacle, so it's | :07:02. | :07:05.
driven around it. Driving around a car park is one | :07:06. | :07:14.
thing but how do these autonomous Electronic supplier Delphi has | :07:15. | :07:18.
partnered with driver assistance and sensor outfit Mobileye | :07:19. | :07:22.
and created a mini fleet of autonomous Audi SUVs | :07:23. | :07:24.
which are driving around There are 24 different sensors | :07:25. | :07:26.
spread out across the body of this car which allow it to drive | :07:27. | :07:30.
autonomously and what I am struck by is that you don't | :07:31. | :07:33.
notice any of them. You can't really see any | :07:34. | :07:36.
of those sensory devices. This car is an indicator, | :07:37. | :07:38.
if you like, of how autonomous vehicles will look in the future, | :07:39. | :07:42.
which is pretty much like any car Those sensors include lidar, radar, | :07:43. | :07:45.
and cameras all around the vehicle. Here, we can see what the car | :07:46. | :07:52.
sees through them. Identifying other vehicles | :07:53. | :07:57.
as well as pedestrians, and behaving accordingly, | :07:58. | :08:01.
as it weaves So, I'm a rear passenger in the back | :08:02. | :08:02.
of this self-driving car. And so far zero dramas, | :08:03. | :08:08.
apart from looking forward and noticing | :08:09. | :08:10.
that the driver doesn't have his hands | :08:11. | :08:12.
on the steering wheel. I could be forgiven for thinking | :08:13. | :08:14.
that I am actually being driven The thing is, we've been driving | :08:15. | :08:18.
around in prototype self-driving How long is it going to be before | :08:19. | :08:23.
cars like this are available There is quite a wide consensus | :08:24. | :08:28.
among the industry that 2021 is the time where the technology | :08:29. | :08:36.
will be ready, and after a number of years where society will start | :08:37. | :08:39.
gaining confidence in this kind of technology, then society would be | :08:40. | :08:42.
at the point where the driver can be With that 2021 goal in mind, | :08:43. | :08:46.
Mobileye announced that, in partnership with BMW and Intel, | :08:47. | :08:57.
it will be testing 40 and European roads in | :08:58. | :09:00.
the second half of this year. Autonomous automobiles are most | :09:01. | :09:04.
definitely on their way. Now, if you are someone who preferS | :09:05. | :09:15.
the wind to be rushing through your hair, CES also | :09:16. | :09:18.
offers plenty for riders This is surely the most fun | :09:19. | :09:21.
you can have on a beach The Super 73 is an electric bike | :09:22. | :09:33.
that can hold enough charge Its top speed is 27mph, | :09:34. | :09:38.
which on Newport Beach is certainly Don't press on it just yet | :09:39. | :09:43.
and you have the two The bike was funded via Kickstarter, | :09:44. | :09:50.
where it raised almost $500,000, and now each bike is | :09:51. | :10:09.
being carefully crafted We have every machine needed | :10:10. | :10:11.
to create an entire bike. There's some days where we have got, | :10:12. | :10:15.
you know, 30, 40 bikes being welded That's to ensure that | :10:16. | :10:19.
everything is done properly, safely, and will hold | :10:20. | :10:22.
up for a lifetime. The batteries in these things | :10:23. | :10:25.
are getting more affordable, they're getting lighter, | :10:26. | :10:27.
so it means at CES this year we're seeing a host of interesting | :10:28. | :10:30.
ways to help us get around. Chinese company LeEco | :10:31. | :10:35.
unveiled these bikes. They're powered by normal pedals, | :10:36. | :10:37.
but they have the android mobile operating system built in so you can | :10:38. | :10:40.
track your progress. And then there is things | :10:41. | :10:43.
like the Movpack. This is a regular backpack, | :10:44. | :10:48.
that with one movement you can turn it | :10:49. | :10:51.
into an electric skateboard, that's actually easier to ride | :10:52. | :10:52.
than a regular skateboard. But it's perhaps more futuristic | :10:53. | :10:56.
ideas like this one from Honda that This concept car is more | :10:57. | :10:59.
about having something that you don't necessarily own, | :11:00. | :11:05.
but you kind of just call it up whenever you need a vehicle to pop | :11:06. | :11:09.
to the shops or do some It will drive itself to you, | :11:10. | :11:12.
pick you up, and when you are done with it you can just | :11:13. | :11:18.
let it go itself. And we will have to stop Consumer | :11:19. | :11:29.
Electronics Show coverage right there because this is the shortcut | :11:30. | :11:34.
of Click. We are back in Vegas next week. In the meantime you can follow | :11:35. | :11:38.
us on Twitter. Thank you very much for watching and we will see you | :11:39. | :11:41.
soon. | :11:42. | :11:45. |
