end of a very wet rainy season. Two

difficult to predict the seasons.

in recent years, and have lost

has been planting a type of runner

weeks to grow. In September to

information? That is incredible.

least, half a dozen, Vaas 15 weather
stations in that sort of area. So | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39 | |
you can see the problem. -- perhaps
15. The satellites can do some of | 0:04:39 | 0:04:46 | |
it. They can pick up some of the
clouds, but can only estimate the | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50 | |
rain how much each plant can
produce. You need those measurements | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54 | |
of the ground. Was the other
parameters, like temperature, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59 | |
humidity, and pressure... You know,
it is like any commuter programme. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03 | |
Garbage in, garbage out. Peter is
advising a start-up that wants to | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08 | |
pepper Africa with these. They are
fully automated self reporting | 0:05:08 | 0:05:14 | |
low-cost weather stations. They can
be monitored from anywhere, looking | 0:05:14 | 0:05:19 | |
up to Africa's extensive mobile cell
network. They place their first | 0:05:19 | 0:05:25 | |
station last year, and will have
more than 100 operating by | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28 | |
Christmas. So what do we get on our
fully automatic weather station? | 0:05:28 | 0:05:35 | |
Well, we have a bucket up here,
which measures rainfall. There is a | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39 | |
little seesaw device out there which
goes backwards and forwards for | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43 | |
every drip that comes through. That
tells us how quickly the rain is | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48 | |
falling, as well as how much rain is
falling. And an anemometer a bit of | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52 | |
giving us the wind speed and
direction by the then there at the | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56 | |
top. -- vane. This is the solar
panel which powers the whole thing | 0:05:56 | 0:06:03 | |
and is cleverly used to tell us how

behind this high kind of affair is

measures humidity and it is stuck in

by this housing. All of that data

round at the back, which is sent to
this communications unit. It has a | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30 | |
sink that works in every African
country. What some of us would do | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35 | |
for one of those... And then it uses
this transmitter to send it all back | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39 | |
to base. That goes back to Europe,
and then from the guys in Europe, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43 | |
they will produce a model, which
will give people back here a more | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47 | |
accurate weather forecast. It is
already making a difference. Farmers | 0:06:47 | 0:06:55 | |
like Peter Gant daily text alerts,
giving them a steer as to what to | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59 | |
expect. This farmer told us his
texts have helped him decide when to | 0:06:59 | 0:07:06 | |
add pesticides. -- Peter get. Up to
80% yield increases. That makes the | 0:07:06 | 0:07:16 | |
difference between eating to stay
alive and sending your children to | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19 | |
school. And it is not just the
personal impact. Health agencies can | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23 | |
use forecast to predict outbreaks of
malaria or cholera. And insurers | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28 | |
want to know they need to pay out on
policies. The Coco Belt in Africa is | 0:07:28 | 0:07:41 | |
shifting. Investors want to know

whole of Africa at the moment, there

reporting weather stations. To get

down to something closer. This is
fantastic to me that I feel I can | 0:08:01 | 0:08:10 | |
make use of that experience, to
