This week, a phone is born and we

are exclusively behind the scenes.

Can artificial intelligence block

the bullies? And driving monsters.

Just across the water from Hong

Kong, on the Chinese mainland, lies

a city at the heart of the country's

technological revolution. Welcome

back to where stuff gets made. When

you think of China's electronic

scene, this might be what you think

of. Thousands of factories and

millions of people mass-producing

billions of devices. More than 70%

of the world's mobile phones are

manufactured in China. Their

components, also made locally, as

Aust from the city's famous giant

electronics markets, where

everything is for sale. But all that

industry is taking its toll on the

city. As the buildings go up to

accommodate the influx of

businesses, this mob has come down

to remind everyone of the price you

pay for a rapidly expanding

industrial economy. The middle-class

here is also consuming more power.

As well as demanding something else,

good quality home-grown products.

And Chinese brands are rising to the

challenge, with names like ZTE and

Huawei breaking out of China and

becoming recognised and desired

worldwide. One such grand is One

Plsu it's already turned out a

number of phones that have been

compared favourably to Samsung

phones and this week it unveiled a

brand-new handset. With all the

fanfare of new phone gets these

days.

Are you all excited?

The

secrecy that surrounds these phones

prelaunch is intense and it's part

of the hype. Look, it's another

black rectangle! But as such it is

really rare to get a look behind the

scenes at the design, manufacture

and the launch of a new device. But

two weeks before the unveiling, we

were given exclusive access to the

inner workings of the production

line on the run-up to D-Day. Now I'm

qualified to serve you pastries.

They make loads of different types

of phones in this factory. To keep

the 5T as secret from the other

workers, every thing happens behind

the blue shroud of secrecy. Are you

ready? Thank you. Come on. Welcome

to production line 27. The phone

starts life as just a tiny camera

there and then it is gradually

assembled around this new shape the

production line, which means by the

time it gets to the end it's a fully

featured phone just about there.

This is the reason China has come to

dominate electronics manufacturing.

The supply of a disciplined,

low-cost workforce. Each person here

has one unique job which requires

concentration, speed and precision.

A single speck of dust in the camera

lens and the finish phone will be

reject it. What I found most

surprising about this is it's all

people. I would have thought with

this kind of high precision job

these phones would have been built

solely by machine, but it's pretty

much all humans. Each line can

produce more than 90 phones and our.

It's exhausting just watching this.

-- an hour. Fortunately the staff

get a two-hour lunch break and also

suddenly at 3pm...

BELL RINGS this might look weird,

but having seen how intense this job

is and how much concentration you

need, this ten minute break is

invaluable.

I think if I was doing this job I'd

just want ten minutes to get my head

down and close my eyes and reset my

brain too. Now, these people are

bringing together a design that has

been anguished over, squeezed for

efficiency and ultimately

compromised to keep costs down. My

meeting with one of the designers to

get the inside track on how he has

made this black rectangle ever so

slightly different from all the

others. For every new phone you come

up with lots of different designs,

like this.

But my word! Do you

think we've achieved peak design

now?

What doesn't interfere with the

final product is something that we

can't change. We are still making

some sacrifices in favour of the

exterior, still a little bit.

Actually the best place for this

would it directly on the corner. In

our design we have this hangover so

this doesn't allow us to put this

year.

If you could get rid of one

part of the phone, what would it be?

Maybe the shell.

LAUGHS That's the best answer!

Back at the factory, Simon would be

horrified by what happens to his

design. This is where an unlucky few

phones are pulled off the production

line to check extreme tolerance. It

is not being dropped flat, is it?

No. It is a more cool environment,

five degrees. The components will be

shaken little bit.

Elsewhere, other

test phones escape that big plunge,

but instead are dropped 5000 times

each. Others have their charge

imports wiggled and buttons pressed

10,000 times. And then there's the

tumble dryer. Only about 70% of the

sample phones start surviving this

rigourous testing would have been

deemed successful. For me this is a

fascinating book at how a phone is

born and now that it's being

launched this small preproduction

mine can expand once the company has

an indication of how many orders it

will get. And that's the secret. Not

to produce more than you can sell.

So when OnePlus decided to take on

the big brands, it decided to sell

its first phone by invitation only.

What was the thinking behind that? I

would have tried to make it as

available as possible.

Being a

brand-new company and not making

such a complicated product as a

smartphone and being based here, we

didn't really have the opportunity

to test the product in all the

countries where we sold it and

adding to that we didn't know how

many phones to make. If you end up

having to many phones in your

warehouse that you can't sell it so

far.

With the launch over, OnePlus

will nervously await the first

reviews and, more importantly, the

advance orders. And they will decide

whether these people will be joined

by hundreds more or not.

Hopefully it was better than last

time! Videogames publisher EA was in

hot water this week with its new

Star Wars title. Characters like

Luke Skywalker is and Darth Vader,

gamers had to pay large amounts of

credit. I do with real cash or by

spending tens of hours playing. Due

to complaints, EA originally reduce

the number needed by 79%, but now

needs to hold on all real-world

transactions. Finally, in

competition with Amazon and Google,

the Chinese search engine giant

revealed the voice controlled smart

speaker. It has a detachable remote

that comes with an LED display, see

you can see that wherever you are in

the room. There is also a robotic

arm

The UK's anti- bullying week is now

coming to an end, but behind closed

doors, computer screens and even

smart phones, the bullying that some

encounter in the school playground

still lives on after-hours.

After I

did come out I then received online

anonymous messages from an account

set up to message me, telling me I

should kill myself, because

obviously they didn't agree with my

sexuality. It destroyed me because

not only was the bullying happened

at school, it followed me to my home

and my room, MySpace where I feel

happy and I am myself -- my safe

space.

Thomas moved schools and went

on to become one of Facebook's anti-

bullying ambassadors, a scheme

funded by the social network to

train up pupils to provide

peer-to-peer support within

secondary schools.

It's really

important to have someone there

because it is someone they know who

they can come to. With the

ambassadors being their generation,

children are more likely to come to

us and know we are there for them,

because we are their rage and we

have similar.

But with so many

different places to communicate, the

problem is hard to police, monitor

and soul. As those at the frontline

of dealing cyber bullying attest.

Our concern is just how awful that

things are. It's very sad but we

regularly see those kinds of

comments. Go kill yourself. Those

sorts of things, which I can't

imagine would happen in a

face-to-face environment.

As the big

and small players try to overcome

the issue, one British company has

big ambitions. They want to get

their software on every single

child's device before they use it

for the first time. They don't like

to refer to their software as

parental control because they feel

that could put people off. Some of

the functions but could be

considered that. For example,

monitoring the amount of time your

children are online and limiting

that however you see fit. You can

block devices and websites, but it

is also planning on upping the game

of what these sorts of things can do

by adding artificial intelligence.

By later this year it will aim to

try to track the behavioural

changes, so that they can pre-empt

any bullying before it actually

happens. It aims to understand

context, dividing triggered alerts

for parents, rather than letting

them actually spy.

One of the ways

that we identify when children are

feeling sad and maybe even depressed

is they stop posting selfies of

themselves because they've lost the

self-confidence. So our software is

designed to pick up those trends and

recognised the changing behavioural

patterns. So we are identifying

cyber abuse, bullying, extortion,

grooming and other predatory risks.

Great if it works but of course it's

all really about human behaviour.

Culturally we obviously have an

issue that young people believe that

you can behave this way online. We

need to send a message, it takes all

of us to work together, educators,

parents and tech companies, to make

sure parents understand that.

So

while none of the solutions may be

foolproof, maybe these ideas

together could make cyber bullying

are less troubled in the future it

is now. -- vanities today.

Apple has been massively popular in

China, but that popularity has

started to go down, mostly because

of the increase in good-quality

Chinese smartphones. That has caused

a problem for small businesses

dependent on the obsession with

iPhones in China.

We have spent some

time with one of the country's

unofficial genius Bar workshops who

have become dependent on the success

of Apple.

No waiting for these

migrants from southern China. 10

years ago they moved to Beijing to

join the technology boom. For this

family run business, they are linked

to the rise and fall of the

popularity of the iPhone. They fix

more than 10,000 iPhones a year.

TRANSLATION:

We can basically fix

any problem, big or small. The main

business to upgrade iPhone storage.

We have seen many customers. Many do

not want to change their phone, but

want to update storage.

China and

Apple have had a up and down

relationship. This is the second

biggest market. But Apple has lost a

lot of its lustre in China to be

until recently, they faced

back-to-back declining sales. It is

losing ground to Chinese

competitors. TRANSLATION:

Other

brands have taken some of the market

share from Apple. That is why Apple

sales are not as good as they were.

One possibility is it is much more

expensive than Chinese brands. At

the same time, Chinese brands are

also made well and good quality, so

many people choose Chinese brands.

This means fewer customers for the

family. TRANSLATION:

It is just too

expensive. IPhone eight is the same

as iPhone 7. The only difference is

wireless charging.

Apple generates

35% of its profit in China. The

launch of the iPhone can marked a

return to growth in the country. --

10. Chinese made apps are dominating

the market. Many users are now

opting for cheaper Chinese brands

equipped with high-end features.

TRANSLATION:

People in cities with

low consumption, four tier cities or

below, choose cheap Chinese brands.

People tend to get lower ones.

It is

still the fifth selling phone in

China, but now Chinese phones are

moving into the international

market.

Some are selling overseas,

like Huawei. They are quite good.

Two years ago, China was expected to

overtake the US, becoming the

biggest market of Apple. Workers are

hedging their bets. TRANSLATION:

How

big a market share they will take in

China is difficult to predict. If

Apple can change to be more

attractive to customers, it will

still have quite a big market share.

No one can live without a phone. If

you work on the phone industry, you

will have a market.

Even back when

China was just 93 manufacturing the

devices for other countries, it was

still growing pretty strong

technology brands to serve its own

enormous population. Take WeChat, an

application used by nearly 900

million people in China. It is a bit

like WhatsApp, but you can do so

much more with it. You can order a

taxi, order food, and even get like

on Tinder. -- date. Is in the

smaller shops accept payment through

WeChat, even if they do not take

cash. -- even the. This is the

easiest peer to peer payment scheme

I have ever seen. The money is

transferred from your account to

that. Behind WeChat is one of the

biggest companies in China, Tencent,

possibly the biggest company you

have never heard of. And just a race

book and Google in the West, they

are trying to make sense and make

use of all of the interactions and

words and pictures shared on the

service every second. The brand-new

artificial intelligence lab in

Shenzhen is full of young minds

trying to apply machine learning to

understanding images. They are

coming up similar results we have

seen previously from companies in

the West. This application

identifies different objects in a

picture. At the moment, just

rectangular books. But here is one

that tries to work out what you are

wearing, presumably so it can sell

you more of the same. You see, as

soon as you can isolate objects

within the image, you can give them

special treatments. Now, that could

be for novelty reasons, a bit like

what we have seen Snapchat do, or

more useful things, like

intelligently applying different

effects to different parts of the

image, like lightening. Is a video

chat, the faces the most important

part. By isolating that, they can be

turned into three new models which

might form your avatar for times

when the video link will not work.

-- 3D. In fact, they are working on

the whole body here, identifying

limbs and joints also forming part

of the three Dee reconstruction. --

3D. Just don't ask to see the raw

data. And for times when the video

is not clear, or it is too

compressed, here is how they

increased the resolution, adding

back in missing detail by looking

for clues of what was lost over

several friends of video. But this

laboratory wants to go further. --

Before the plane was

invented, people could not imagine

flying. Only after that invention do

we understand it is possible. The

same thing has happened with AI to

be instead of just improving

efficiency, we need a big

breakthrough going beyond

imagination.

If nothing else has

Tesla. And I am not just talking

about semiautonomous cars, no, Tesla

now has a new truck. Here is Dave

Lee in Los Angeles.

You really have

to hand it to Elon Musk. When people

say he cannot do something, he is

doing too much, he goes and launches

an enormous electrical truck. And

here it is. The Tesla Semidays, it

will go 500 miles in a single

charge, carrying the heaviest loads

on the roads, doing 0- 60 miles per

hour in 20 seconds.

On the left, the

thing that looks like it is not

moving, that is a diesel truck.

As

you might expect, it comes filled

with a host of Tesla technology,

including autonomy. This thing will

change on its own.

Now, a diesel

truck is twice as expensive as a

Tesla Semi.

Moving from diesel to

electricity, it is more cheap, and

they could pay for themselves in

just a few years.

Other companies

are trying to pull off the electric

truck. This is one that has been

around for more than 100 years as a

truck firm, unveiling its own

recently. But that one has only 100

miles per charge, of no interest to

any serious trucker. In classic

Steve Jobs style, he had one more

thing for the Tesla faithful. The

Tesla fans who came here today

certainly expected to see a lorry,

but they were not expecting to see a

new roadster. That has got this

energetic crowd extremely excited.

The bad news for Tesla fans is it

will not be on the road until 2020.
