in Birmingham. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
That's it from me. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
More at two o'clock. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
Now it's time for Click. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:18
I've had enough. Enough of old tech.
Going obsolete, or so it seems. Even | 0:00:47 | 0:01:00
the days of desktop computers are
numbered. Right. Let's see what | 0:01:00 | 0:01:06
they've got us this year. The
Consumer Electronics Show in Las | 0:01:06 | 0:01:13
Vegas is the place to find out. It's
where the new products and concepts | 0:01:13 | 0:01:19
launch for 2018 and some of them
might just change the world. One of | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
the highlights for me is always
finding out how Ben DLG is. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:30
Previously, they have been slightly
bandy and this year, I think they | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
have nailed it. It's a 65 inch
rollup display and the image quality | 0:01:34 | 0:01:42
is really very good. And it does
role completely up in two admittedly | 0:01:42 | 0:01:48
fairly chunky box. It's an blue LED
display, the only display tech that | 0:01:48 | 0:01:55
can be fully flexible. The circuitry
is built on a segmented back which | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
is a bit like a retractable garage
door. You can choose how far the | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
screen rolls out as well as a
widescreen TV which can be used as a | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
thin notification bar. A wider
format 21 ex nine cinema screen and | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
of course nothing at all. The
argument is that you can make use of | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
the space behind it when you're not
using it. And in South Korea, a lot | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
of people live in high-rise blocks.
Can you imagine lugging a TV like | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
that up the stairs? Much easier if
you can roll it down in a tube. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:34
Elsewhere, plenty of other things to
see and play with here. Here is a | 0:02:34 | 0:02:45
telephone from Vivo that does not
have a fingerprint scanner on the | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
back is because it has one built
into the screen. The display shines | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
light on to your bum and an optical
scanner registers what it sees. Here | 0:02:53 | 0:03:01
is the link below to let has dashed
the link below 360. You can see it | 0:03:01 | 0:03:11
through first person view so others
can feel like they were truly there | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
as well. Though it's important to
catch the eye at shows like these | 0:03:15 | 0:03:27
which is what this thing is doing.
This is the hyper vision display and | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
is capable of projecting life-size
images high above the show floor. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:37
All right, sexy, that's enough from
you. There is the science bit. We | 0:03:37 | 0:03:43
have 24 rapidly spinning LED strips.
It gives you the illusion of a | 0:03:43 | 0:03:49
persistent image. In the flesh, I
have to say, does really rather | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
good. Oh, good grief. Another flimsy
flimflam from me. Let's get Lara | 0:03:54 | 0:04:03
with some of the big announcement
from the show. And what a week it | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
has been with news from Tak's
biggest players. Including the likes | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
of Intel saying it will release
software fixes to repair security | 0:04:12 | 0:04:18
issues surrounding its chips. We've
had press events that have gone | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
wrong with disobedient robots from
LG. Col is not going to talk to me, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:27
she doesn't like me evidently. And
Sony's robot dog wasn't that | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
response of either. He is an
autonomous robot and will quickly | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
become a member of your family.
Right? He ignored me. Meanwhile, a | 0:04:37 | 0:04:43
lack of female keynote speakers has
caused controversy amongst | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
attendees. A situation which is less
-- which is meant to raise eyebrows | 0:04:46 | 0:04:53
compounded by the included in
robotic pole dancers at a strip club | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
near the event. And on the floor, as
usual, TVs were everywhere but this | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
one really stood out. The same sum
wall is 140 inches wide and can be | 0:05:03 | 0:05:10
made larger by adding modules. And
finally, Toyota has unveiled its new | 0:05:10 | 0:05:15
board economist Palette vehicle, to
be used ridesharing, deliveries or | 0:05:15 | 0:05:22
even a moving storefront which comes
directly to you. That was Lara. Now | 0:05:22 | 0:05:33
what are the big things at the
moment is wireless charging. That | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
normally means putting your phone on
a pad that is also is possible to | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
send power through the air. One of
the problems with wireless power is | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
the power is sent in every direction
at the same time so wherever your | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
device is, it only receives a tiny
fraction of that power. Well, here | 0:05:50 | 0:05:56
is a system that gets around that by
sending focused beams of power to | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
one particular point. The power
transmitter can be built into | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
ceiling tiles, walls, tables or
parts of the furniture. All it needs | 0:06:06 | 0:06:11
to know is which direction to point
the power ridden. Here is the | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
science bit. To work that out, the
device needing the power sends out | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
low-power signals in all directions,
most of which are blocked by nearby | 0:06:20 | 0:06:27
objects. But the signals that do
bounce around come from to give | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
tangles. By sending the power back
at exactly the same angles, that | 0:06:32 | 0:06:38
power bounces about and eventually
gets back to the device. The makers | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
to bash the makers told us they can
achieve two watts of power from a | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
distance of one metre which is about
half the power of the smartphone | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Charger. I'm using this light to
detect the power beams from the | 0:06:51 | 0:06:57
transmitter and the blackbox
transceiver. Think about carrying | 0:06:57 | 0:07:06
out remotely. He never had to charge
the battery again. But with high | 0:07:06 | 0:07:12
power beams bouncing around your
home, you have to wonder if it is | 0:07:12 | 0:07:18
safe. We look to get FCC approval
for safety. If you have accepted | 0:07:18 | 0:07:27
Wi-Fi into your home, excepting this
technology would be the same. In the | 0:07:27 | 0:07:34
future, the power receivers could be
made into any shape including that | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
of a double a battery and that means
ordinary devices could be converted | 0:07:38 | 0:07:44
to wireless power without any
modification at all. For a long | 0:07:44 | 0:07:50
time, bricks and mortar shops have
been trying to keep up with on line | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
retailers that the added benefits of
keeping track with customer habits | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
as well is providing very easy ways
of paying. Here is one way that we | 0:07:57 | 0:08:03
could see some of those features
brought into the real world by | 0:08:03 | 0:08:08
retrofitting existing stores. I Poly
uses off-the-shelf cameras, one | 0:08:08 | 0:08:15
appeared to track customers and one
to take a look at the products and | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
the customers interactions but the
real work is happening here in the | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
AI algorithms were it is advising
all the products off-the-shelf and | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
their customers interactions with
them. At the AI is using the main | 0:08:28 | 0:08:33
cannon camera. It can recognise
faces, identify close and follow | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
their movements. Through the
combination of the customers being | 0:08:38 | 0:08:43
recognised, when they get to the
checkout, they don't even need to | 0:08:43 | 0:08:48
scan the items. They just need to
pay. And if they agree to be | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
remembered, and all they need to do
is go and pick up their products and | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
take them away. One thing which
isn't making such a big noise this | 0:08:57 | 0:09:17
week is virtual reality. Is the our
in its last chance? Billions have | 0:09:17 | 0:09:29
been poured into BR but the headsets
are not selling the way companies | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
had hoped. There are multiple
problems. The set-up is too | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
difficult. The content is not
compelling enough. And a must is | 0:09:36 | 0:09:46
treated very carefully, the VR
experience can and has made me feel | 0:09:46 | 0:09:51
sick. The manufacturers are not
going to give up on this. The oculus | 0:09:51 | 0:10:01
go will be launched around March.
That's like Samsung's VR but you | 0:10:01 | 0:10:07
don't need a phone for it to work,
it is all built-in and around $200. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:13
HTC announced they are to release
the five pro later this year, at | 0:10:13 | 0:10:19
three K headset which will improve
resolution significantly and keep | 0:10:19 | 0:10:25
the Vive ahead of the curb. While
oculus allows three degrees of | 0:10:25 | 0:10:31
movement which is that way, that way
and that way, HTC has just launched | 0:10:31 | 0:10:40
its Vive focus in China which allows
six degrees which is that, bad and | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
that. And also three dimensions of
movement in space. And that is using | 0:10:45 | 0:10:53
inside out tracking which means
there are no sensors or lighthouses | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
telling you whether headset is. The
headset itself works out where it is | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
in the environment. This is the next
level four BR. Still, with Magic | 0:11:01 | 0:11:11
leap releasing its augmented reality
with tons of activity like this, a | 0:11:11 | 0:11:16
cheap flat wake --a cheap flat pack
way of building your own headset, BR | 0:11:16 | 0:11:22
continues to face a tough battle
with a R which just seems a bit more | 0:11:22 | 0:11:28
ready to make its mark, if you ask
me. I feel better than that. Anyway, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:34
time to move on. Here comes Lara
with some hi-tech ways to stop | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
thieves. At this you's show, few
antitheft devices have been | 0:11:38 | 0:11:48
launched. And this is a prototype
burglar prevention system. It aims | 0:11:48 | 0:11:58
to replicate what a burglar sounds
like in your home sea can preset it | 0:11:58 | 0:12:05
with the way you live your life,
whether you are watching a film, | 0:12:05 | 0:12:09
talking in the kitchen and when the
lights are going to be going on and | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
off. Or you could simply... Have you
got a permit to those guns? | 0:12:13 | 0:12:25
Eventually, the plan would be that a
group of synchronised devices could | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
work through the house to make it
look like natural movement from room | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
to room. Of course, that would add
to the cost. And this is a smart | 0:12:32 | 0:12:40
safe. Now I had to admit, when I
received it, I did think, this is | 0:12:40 | 0:12:45
very light, very flimsy and how
could it possibly be a safe because | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
you could just steal this. But it
seems that technology here could be | 0:12:49 | 0:12:55
used in bigger, stronger states and
this particular model is possibly | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
better for putting medicine in or
something you want to keep away from | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
the kids or other people visiting
your house. So how it works. It | 0:13:03 | 0:13:09
connects via smartphone at which
means you can Oatley open the safe | 0:13:09 | 0:13:14
should you wish to do that. And you
will also relieve -- receive alerts | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
if anybody tries to tamper with it.
Let's set it up somewhere where it | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
can remain in the steady place. This
particular model has wings which | 0:13:22 | 0:13:28
extend into place. Let me put
something in here. Let me timetable | 0:13:28 | 0:13:34
with it and see what happens. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
It is quite firmly attached. With a
little bit more foresight could | 0:13:40 | 0:13:47
probably pull it out. Yep, there we
go. Oh, it looks like it could be | 0:13:47 | 0:13:56
quite easy to open as well. Any
ideas? Oh, dear. Let me try and find | 0:13:56 | 0:14:08
something that might be a bit better
for security. It's not just about | 0:14:08 | 0:14:16
the home, though, this bag and is to
keep your belongings safe when you | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
are and about. Do if you are on a
train or plane and you have to leave | 0:14:20 | 0:14:25
your Bag some where else you might
want to activate this tamper alert | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
which uses this ID card to turn it
on and off. So if anybody tries to | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
open your bag... It sounds like
that! But if the issue is actually | 0:14:33 | 0:14:43
you forgetting, then this prevention
device aims to conquer the rescue. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
You can attach it any given item and
the company software will learn your | 0:14:46 | 0:14:51
habits. So what time and where you
take that item and if you do | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
something that seems out of the
ordinary they can send your mind up | 0:14:55 | 0:14:59
before you've even had a chance to
forget it. Eventually they are even | 0:14:59 | 0:15:03
hoping to be able to do things like
access travel details through your | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
e-mail, so you can get a reminder to
pick up your passport without | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
running the risk of leaving without
it. The device does still seem a | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
little bit big right now but they
are trying to get a smaller version | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
ready ahead of the launch. Great if
it works, which was generally be | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
seen with most of what I tested. --
generally the theme. That was Lara. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:31
This is a passenger drone made by a
German company and this one actually | 0:15:31 | 0:15:37
has flown. I am constantly reminded
that the future of transport will be | 0:15:37 | 0:15:43
amazingly here at CES, although
there is no guarantee that that is | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
true. Case in point. Remember the
electric car, the Faraday Future? | 0:15:47 | 0:15:55
Well, that's show business. Now,
this is a start-up started by some | 0:15:55 | 0:16:03
impressive people who came up with
basically a computer on wheels. Will | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
this car actually work? Dave Lee was
given exclusive access to it before | 0:16:07 | 0:16:17
and during. I'll be honest, this
wasn't the most thrilling test drive | 0:16:17 | 0:16:22
of my life. Worried about being
spotted before their big CES | 0:16:22 | 0:16:29
unveiling, I was only a large test
drive the car slowly around their | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
unmarked warehouse. But it was very
interesting. The company has created | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
what is essentially a mobile
supercomputer. They say it has more | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
in common with your smartphone than
it does the typical car and I agree. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
For the first time I've been
impressed by a car and not because | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
of its performance on the road but
because of its operating system. The | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
vision behind it is we want to be
the company bringing into the market | 0:16:54 | 0:16:59
the first real smart car. The
vehicle has been designed and | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
created by a suitably qualified
team, made up of former BMW and | 0:17:02 | 0:17:10
Apple enginners. Inside you will see
the dashboard has been completely | 0:17:10 | 0:17:15
reimagined. The gesture control
system does look a bit imprecise and | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
quite fiddly not ideal when you are
driving on a motorway at 70 mph. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:24
This looks like a really distracting
driving situation. Isn't this | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
actually quite dangerous? So the key
is about customisation. When you | 0:17:29 | 0:17:35
worry and drive mode, we will
actually disable certain features. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
You won't be able to get into watch
videos, for instance. We want to | 0:17:39 | 0:17:46
build a platform where when there is
someone driving all occupants in the | 0:17:46 | 0:17:51
car, including the driver, have the
ability to interact. Some of the | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
most exciting features will be
disabled until we live in a world of | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
fully autonomous driving. So perhaps
think of this vehicle as bridging | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
the gap between our dumb driving
past... And our smart driving | 0:18:03 | 0:18:10
future. Of course you can't reveal a
car at CES without an expensive, | 0:18:10 | 0:18:15
lavish launch event. This one went
by without a hitch and people seemed | 0:18:15 | 0:18:21
impressed. It's really interesting
idea but they are trying to target | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
it at as an affordable price point,
$40,000. -- target it out. And they | 0:18:24 | 0:18:31
are adding all of this cool
technology, so I think it got a | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
pretty good message. If you think
all this seems a little familiar you | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
are right. This was the scene at
last year's CES, when I covered a | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
new car company, Faraday Future.
Back then they said everything was | 0:18:43 | 0:18:49
going swimmingly and their big
factory would be built soon. But in | 0:18:49 | 0:18:53
less than a year the factory in
Nevada has been scrapped and while | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
the company insists it is still
pressing ahead, Faraday Future is in | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
serious danger of becoming a thing
of the past. So what will happen to | 0:19:00 | 0:19:05
Biton? The biggest challenge facing
them right now is to do with | 0:19:05 | 0:19:10
charging. Kessler has more than 8000
superchargers for their cars dotted | 0:19:10 | 0:19:15
all over the world and Biton has
none. When it comes to making the | 0:19:15 | 0:19:25
car, they are building bears in
Nanjing, China, and they promised | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
their car will be put into
production by the end of 2019 and | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
one-day cost $45,000. We will have
to see how that goes. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:42
There will be plenty more transport
on next week's Nick macro. In the | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
meantime I am having my nails done.
This is the O2 Nails printer. Choose | 0:19:46 | 0:19:53
any image and they will print it on
to your nail. Of course I chose a | 0:19:53 | 0:19:58
picture of myself. OK, Richard
Taylor, beat that! | 0:19:58 | 0:20:05
Refreshing! They are creating a
vacuum in my mouth and sucking at my | 0:20:05 | 0:20:12
gums and at the same time
circulating water around my teeth. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
It is intended for users with
reduced mobility or people who have | 0:20:16 | 0:20:20
difficulty brushing their teeth. It
replaces the need to brush and | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
floss. The guys are working on
integrating centres in the future | 0:20:23 | 0:20:28
devices so that oral hygienist or
dentists will be able to diagnose | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
and treat forgone disease. It's
quite tickly as well. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:38
This is being marketed as the
world's first smart baby feeding | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
monitor. You put your baby bottle,
any baby bottle, into the device, it | 0:20:42 | 0:20:47
has a temperature sensor to make
sure the milk is the right | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
temperature, it has a motion sensor
which flushes read if you are | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
holding the bottle at a particular
angle -- flashes red. And it is | 0:20:54 | 0:20:59
Wi-Fi enabled. If there is a nanny
feeding at home and the mummies at | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
work, the results of the feeding are
uploaded to the smartphone at work | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
so mum can tell exactly how much the
baby has drunk. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:13
What you are seeing here is a
magical chessboard. It allows | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
players to play with each other
regardless of where they are in the | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
world. Right now someone is playing
by their phone and an electric | 0:21:26 | 0:21:33
armies dragging the different pieces
to the rights. Pretty cool! | 0:21:33 | 0:21:39
CES can really take it out of you
and I for one am already pretty | 0:21:39 | 0:21:44
sleep deprived. What I have here is
a device that is packed with all | 0:21:44 | 0:21:50
sorts of technology and the claim is
it will provide within 20 minutes | 0:21:50 | 0:21:54
the equivalent of 2-5 hours sleep.
There will be a leap is put behind | 0:21:54 | 0:21:59
might use effectively through this
device that are transmitting signals | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
up to my brain. I'm going to try
this on and I'll see you in 20 | 0:22:02 | 0:22:07
minutes.
I'll tell you what, he has the right | 0:22:07 | 0:22:14
idea. Walking around here is
absolutely exhausting. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:21
I'm definitely feeling more relaxed
than I was like 26 minutes ago. Of | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
course I don't know how relaxed
would have felt with just a 26 | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
minute power nap, but I'm ready to
rock 'n' roll. Vegas. Home to | 0:22:36 | 0:22:44
world-class talent, and singing
superstars. And then there's Richard | 0:22:44 | 0:22:49
Taylor and me. This karaoke box uses
a professional altering technology | 0:22:49 | 0:22:56
on your voice. Next stop, Cesar's.
It's not just me on eliminating the | 0:22:56 | 0:23:13
strip this week, Intel has put on a
light show of its own using LED | 0:23:13 | 0:23:21
drawings, obviously... Flying above
the famous the large your fountains, | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
the unmanned aircraft down is in
sync with the water jets and music. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:31
We caught up with the boss behind
this madness on the eve of the | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
performance. There are few
challenges with this space. It's a | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
very tight space. We were only... We
are me about the fly to a certain | 0:23:38 | 0:23:46
height. If the drawings were to ever
go out the motor is dropped and the | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
drone falls into the water. -- the
drones. Well, that was a pretty | 0:23:50 | 0:23:59
spectacular way to end the show,
don't you agree? Don't forget we | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
live at BBC Click on Twitter. I hope
you enjoyed the show and see you | 0:24:02 | 0:24:08
soon. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11 |
