The course is set - the sheep are ready and the handlers and their | :00:12. | :00:16.
dogs waiting. It can only mean one thing - welcome to One Man and His | :00:16. | :00:20.
Dog 2012 and this year we're challenging ourselves, because | :00:20. | :00:30.
:00:30. | :00:46. | ||
Well hello and welcome to Penrice Castle, on the beautiful Gower | :00:46. | :00:51.
peninsula. For the first time in its 36-year lis tri, One Man and | :00:51. | :00:57.
His Dog comes to you live. Yes, you did hear that right. We are light | :00:57. | :01:01.
and frankly anything could happen. But don't worry, all the normal | :01:01. | :01:06.
rules apply. We still have our four competing nation of England, | :01:06. | :01:12.
Ireland, Scotland and Wales and that he very challenging courses to | :01:12. | :01:18.
challenge the handlers and dog. you're new to the sport, don't | :01:18. | :01:24.
worry, we will explain Eigg. Our competitors have arrived, looking | :01:24. | :01:29.
very calm. But I reckon there is a bit of tension in the air as the | :01:29. | :01:34.
handlers and the dogs eye up the competition. Some have competed | :01:34. | :01:40.
against each other before, because these guys are the best in the | :01:40. | :01:44.
business. There is a lot of hand shaking going on, not sure how long | :01:44. | :01:50.
that will continue. First thing today the young handlers were out | :01:50. | :01:55.
and they didn't disappoint. You can see it all on the red button at the | :01:55. | :02:05.
:02:05. | :02:18. | ||
end of the programme. But here are That look like a beautiful lift. | :02:18. | :02:25.
What a recovery. He has, he has turned them. Oh dear is the dog | :02:25. | :02:35.
:02:35. | :02:36. | ||
going in? This is some run, this really is. Well she was asking for | :02:36. | :02:43.
that. They're very tricky sheep. Whoops! That is what you call line | :02:43. | :02:50.
jumping, not line dancing. A possyibt here. Oh I like this, come | :02:50. | :02:56.
in, turn on to the other two though, that is it. Oh the judges won't | :02:56. | :03:03.
lake that. Come on girls, just spin round and help out. It is really | :03:03. | :03:10.
tight point-wise. Surely that's got to be 10. What a pen that was, my | :03:10. | :03:17.
word it went right down to the wire. It is literally one man and his dog. | :03:17. | :03:22.
It was action packed and we did have a souper morning. You can see | :03:22. | :03:28.
all that in full on the red button after this show. Here are the | :03:28. | :03:38.
:03:38. | :03:42. | ||
scores after this morning's young As always on One Man and His Dog | :03:42. | :03:49.
the man with the inside knowledge, our expert Gus Dermody. It was a | :03:49. | :03:57.
good morning. Yes. How do you think they did? Ireland started off and | :03:57. | :04:02.
Sean McCorrigan put in a good run and I didn't think it could be | :04:02. | :04:07.
beaten until the Scottish competitor came in. Ireland are in | :04:07. | :04:11.
the lead, but everything to play for. It really is. It is still | :04:11. | :04:16.
close. There is a long way to go. If you have a burning question | :04:16. | :04:21.
about One Man and His Dog, we would love to hear from you. We will put | :04:21. | :04:27.
Gus on the spot. The hardest questions put them in. Our e-mail | :04:27. | :04:37.
:04:37. | :04:46. | ||
Matt and Gus is is time you went to the box. I have three thing to say | :04:46. | :04:55.
to you, - away, come by and lie down. Now we prepare for the next | :04:55. | :05:01.
stage of the competition. First let me introduce you to our judges, | :05:01. | :05:09.
they are Shirley co pep and Kenny Donald from Ayrshire. -- Shirley | :05:09. | :05:15.
Cropper. We have raised them up so nothing can escape their expert | :05:15. | :05:21.
eyes. On with the live action. Next brace round, that is one man with | :05:21. | :05:26.
two dogs. We will give you all the detail once the competition gets | :05:26. | :05:30.
under way. But here is the man the task of leading the way, finishing | :05:30. | :05:36.
in fourth after the young handlers's round was Stephen | :05:36. | :05:40.
Longton from England and so his second cousin is Michael Longton | :05:40. | :05:50.
:05:50. | :05:54. | ||
and he is first with his dogs, Todd and Don. I am running this year's | :05:54. | :05:58.
brace competition. The Longtons have farmed here since my great | :05:58. | :06:02.
grandfather and it's passed down the general raigs. Now I live here | :06:02. | :06:07.
with my wife and two children and my parents. I'm the fifth | :06:07. | :06:12.
generation of Longtons to run sheepdogs on trials. It is said | :06:12. | :06:18.
that a Longton baby is born with a whistle in its mouth and doesn't | :06:18. | :06:22.
need a dumby. I have my father to give me advice. Without him I don't | :06:22. | :06:27.
think I would have done half as well as I have done in my trialling | :06:28. | :06:35.
career. I hope my daughter, Eva, follows on in the family foot steps. | :06:35. | :06:40.
Todd is a great dog. He is unflappable. He is good at trials | :06:40. | :06:45.
and work. He is great to have around. Don's a little more | :06:45. | :06:50.
unpredictable at times. But he is a great partner to Todd in work and | :06:50. | :06:55.
they seem to complement each other. I have competed on One Man and His | :06:55. | :06:59.
Dog before against Kevin and John from the Wesh team. I hope this | :06:59. | :07:08.
time the rivalry will come out with England on top. Michael Longton | :07:08. | :07:14.
walks out and making a bit of history, Gus, as the first handler | :07:14. | :07:20.
on a live One Man and His Dog. His dogs Todd and Don. Todd with the | :07:20. | :07:29.
blaze on his face and the, there he goes to the left. He has got Don, | :07:29. | :07:36.
the darker heavier, with a bit of tan. He has gone very wide. Good to | :07:36. | :07:43.
see he has gone on the outside of room. Both dogs are doing well. | :07:43. | :07:47.
Let's hope they end up behind the sheep together. I can see Todd | :07:47. | :07:57.
coming around at the bottom. Perfect timing. Stopped up a bit | :07:57. | :08:03.
short. Yes, he did. But they both arrive now. They don't have to | :08:03. | :08:10.
cross at the bottom. Don is going to be working this right hand side | :08:10. | :08:16.
with Todd work out on the left. There's Todd. Yes it is a very | :08:16. | :08:22.
careful lift. He is trying to keep these sheep nice and calm. | :08:22. | :08:26.
whole idea of this lift is to Celt the tempo for the rest of the run. | :08:26. | :08:31.
At the moment, well the sheep certainly don't lack too bothered. | :08:32. | :08:36.
They're just having a little nibble. He is being that bit overcautious. | :08:36. | :08:46.
:08:46. | :09:08. | ||
Very good outruns to start, a 19 is a steady start. There is only 12 | :09:08. | :09:13.
and a half minutes to get through the whole thing. These are the | :09:13. | :09:16.
fetch gates you can see half way up the screen. The sheep want to come | :09:17. | :09:22.
on a nice central line, go through the gates and then come all the way | :09:22. | :09:27.
up to Michael at this post. He is probably taking it extra steady | :09:27. | :09:32.
until he gets the sheep through the fetch gates and then he will put | :09:32. | :09:37.
pressure on the keep the sheep moving faster. At the moment | :09:37. | :09:43.
they're nicely balanced. It is interesting you're using the term | :09:43. | :09:48.
balance, it is a phrase you will use quite a bit. Yes, I and balance | :09:48. | :09:54.
are two of the phrases we use. The balance is where the dog is keeping | :09:54. | :10:00.
the sheep in line towards the hander. The sheep are nicely | :10:00. | :10:09.
balanced on the corner. The shift - - lifts are when the sheep start | :10:09. | :10:13.
moving from the posts. That wasn't bad. The judges have knocked a | :10:13. | :10:21.
couple of points off for the dogs not coming on strong enough. But | :10:21. | :10:28.
Mike -- Michael didn't want them come on to fast. When they approach | :10:29. | :10:32.
Michael, we will get the third score for the fetch. The whole | :10:32. | :10:37.
distance as the sheep will turn around Michael and head off to the | :10:37. | :10:44.
gates on his left. This is where the sheep could slow down a bit, or | :10:44. | :10:48.
get stropy and they don't want to come around the post, because of | :10:48. | :10:53.
the pressures of us at the end of course. We are in a commentary box | :10:53. | :10:58.
just behind the sheep. It keeps them contained, but also slows them | :10:58. | :11:08.
:11:08. | :11:09. | ||
up a bit. They're now on to the drive. This is the idea of the | :11:09. | :11:14.
drive. To leave Michael to go up to the gates on the left. They will | :11:14. | :11:19.
then turn right and go across the field, all the way to the other | :11:19. | :11:23.
drive gate and then be pulled through those. Of course before you | :11:23. | :11:26.
get there, and it will prove difficult, because the woods up | :11:26. | :11:32.
there will be making it a tight squeeze, but first of all to | :11:32. | :11:40.
negotiate these. Well the line's very good. Wow look at that Gus, a | :11:40. | :11:46.
19 out of 20 for the fetch. This is a good start. As long as he doesn't | :11:46. | :11:52.
go too steady. The line is good, the sheep are right in the middle. | :11:52. | :11:58.
They're walking, they have not stopped. They're not strung out. | :11:58. | :12:07.
Both dog independence -- both dogs come out here. Michael is very | :12:07. | :12:13.
experienced. He was on One Man and His Dog in 1996 as a young handler. | :12:13. | :12:17.
But what a wealth of knowledge his family have got. As they go across | :12:17. | :12:23.
here, he has got to watch they don't go too close towards Michael. | :12:23. | :12:27.
In orders they -- in other words they stay behind the wood. Because | :12:27. | :12:32.
they have got to go behind the second drive gates. They're part | :12:32. | :12:42.
:12:42. | :12:43. | ||
way across, but they're all nicely bunched together. About seven | :12:43. | :12:47.
minutes to go and he is taking things very steady. But as we saw | :12:48. | :12:52.
with the young handlers, it just takes one moment to light a spark | :12:52. | :12:57.
and these sheep are off. They really are. That is what he will be | :12:57. | :13:04.
careful of. Now, you got to get those sheep around. Whoops! The dog | :13:04. | :13:12.
is making sure that the sheep stay behind that gate itself and it's | :13:12. | :13:18.
looking good. Oh that is perfection. Can the other dog come around? Oh | :13:18. | :13:25.
dear, Don just pushed a bit too hard then. That is a shame. | :13:25. | :13:31.
managed to get six through! Yes, he did. It only took one dog to make | :13:31. | :13:37.
one false move and this caused the problem. You can see Michael has | :13:37. | :13:41.
left his post and he is waiting for the sheep to arrive. This is what | :13:41. | :13:47.
you're aiming for with a shed. Having to split them in half. So | :13:47. | :13:51.
your looking for five and take them outside of the ring and leave the | :13:51. | :13:57.
remaining five in the ring. It sounds simple, Gus. It does, but | :13:57. | :14:00.
you know Michael is good at this close work. I think this is where | :14:00. | :14:10.
:14:10. | :14:15. | ||
he will make up a bit of time. It is not there yet. He is using Don. | :14:15. | :14:25.
:14:25. | :14:25. | ||
21 out of 30 scored for the cross drive. Here we go now, let's see | :14:25. | :14:29.
how his maths are going to make sure we have got two sets of five | :14:29. | :14:39.
:14:39. | :14:43. | ||
here. It is coming up. Does he get that? The other dog's coming in now. | :14:43. | :14:53.
:14:53. | :14:57. | ||
Has that been accepted? We think it Kenny and Shirley are looking down | :14:57. | :15:05.
over the action. They have confirmed that was good enough. | :15:05. | :15:15.
:15:15. | :15:16. | ||
Lie down. Lie down, Don. That was a successful shed. I don't | :15:16. | :15:22.
know how many points the judges are going to award. It is now to the | :15:22. | :15:32.
:15:32. | :15:34. | ||
ungated pen. So, the whole idea with this pen, | :15:34. | :15:39.
Gus, it is quite a large area, but there is no gate on it. | :15:39. | :15:45.
No, not at all. So Michael has to stand one side. The dogs get them | :15:45. | :15:55.
:15:55. | :15:58. | ||
in on the other. One almost down the side... This close work is good. | :15:58. | :16:02.
Well, he is not doing bad at all. Four minutes to go. | :16:02. | :16:07.
So, this is a real test of patience for Don now. | :16:07. | :16:11.
He is keeping the dog. He has to stay in the open pen to stop the | :16:11. | :16:17.
sheep from coming out. While he stays there at the open pen, which | :16:17. | :16:22.
he has maximum points for. That is brilliant. The dog is starting to | :16:22. | :16:30.
move away! Yes, you have to certainly keep an eye on Don. | :16:30. | :16:40.
So, maximum for the Open Pen, but if any sheep escape, points will be | :16:40. | :16:44.
deducted. Don is looking eager to get involved in the action that is | :16:44. | :16:48.
happening across the field. I like a lot of Michael's close | :16:49. | :16:54.
work. We will see if this second dog can get the sheep into the pen. | :16:54. | :17:00.
Three minutes left. A little flirty here. | :17:00. | :17:03.
Oh, that was the dog challenging the sheep. | :17:03. | :17:07.
Now, obviously, the natural instinct of the sheep is to stay | :17:08. | :17:12.
together. These are keen to get across to those waiting in the pen. | :17:12. | :17:19.
They certainly are. He has to keep them calm and settled. | :17:19. | :17:24.
The other sheep, hopefully they stay in the pen and the other dog | :17:24. | :17:28.
stays there. He has two-and-a-half minutes to go. He has the time to | :17:28. | :17:32.
do it. The hardest thing is that Michael | :17:32. | :17:37.
is unaware of the time. He knows he took his time earlier, but this | :17:37. | :17:42.
looks great. There we are! Time to spare! That | :17:42. | :17:47.
will do. Don, that will do. Well, England will be delighted | :17:47. | :17:52.
with that. Let's find out how things have gone | :17:52. | :17:58.
at the pen as far as the judges are concerned, but, I tell you what, | :17:58. | :18:03.
Gus, the patience paid off, didn't it? I am always impressed with | :18:03. | :18:07.
Michael's close work. This is where it has shown today. | :18:07. | :18:17.
:18:17. | :18:23. | ||
He lost three at the pen. Michael, you should be proud of | :18:23. | :18:27.
that. Your family has a long tradition of being on One Man and | :18:27. | :18:31.
His Dog. They will be applauding you. That was a good round. | :18:31. | :18:37.
Yes, I was really pleased. There was only one place where you | :18:37. | :18:40.
lost a few points at the second gate. | :18:40. | :18:45.
Yeah, trying to be too smart, like I do. Never mind. | :18:45. | :18:50.
It started off so well. The sheep were so calm. The dogs worked so | :18:50. | :18:53.
well together. Yeah, they worked as well as they | :18:53. | :18:58.
ever have done, I think. Are they used to working together? | :18:58. | :19:02.
At home, yes. It is own the second competition I have done this year | :19:02. | :19:05.
with them. Well, that was a very good start. | :19:05. | :19:15.
Any idea what you may have scored? I don't know what it is out of? | :19:15. | :19:19.
120. Well, 117. That was a great score. | :19:19. | :19:22.
Well done. Let's see what the guys thought about that. | :19:22. | :19:26.
That is a very, very good benchmark, but it can be Beatlen. | :19:26. | :19:31.
It can be, but he has set the standard now. | :19:31. | :19:36.
All of the other brace handlers will be watching how he managed to | :19:36. | :19:42.
tackle the cross-drive. Look at tackle the cross-drive. Look at | :19:42. | :19:44.
that, right down the middle. Yes, everything under control. That | :19:45. | :19:47.
was great. Really good. | :19:47. | :19:53.
We wandered if the drive would be too slow. He managed to curve them | :19:53. | :19:59.
around the face. Unfortunately, Don moved too soon. | :19:59. | :20:03.
That was a shame. He pushed them around the back side. | :20:03. | :20:10.
Well, 21 points for the cross-drive. Then we wandered -- wondered if he | :20:10. | :20:16.
would have the time, but he nailed would have the time, but he nailed | :20:16. | :20:20.
it into the pen! Good close work. Well, a very good start from | :20:20. | :20:24.
England and from Michael. Well done to him. Who is next? Well, it is | :20:24. | :20:32.
Wales and our eldest, or should I say most experienced competitor. | :20:32. | :20:37.
74-year-old John Griffith with his dogs, Roy and Fang. | :20:37. | :20:44.
My name is John, I come from North Wales. This year I am running Fang | :20:44. | :20:48.
and Roy on One Man and His Dog. I was born on a small holding up on | :20:48. | :20:53.
the hill. I've been walking up and down the hills ever since. There | :20:54. | :20:59.
has been slate in this valley for a long time. There used to be 3,000 | :20:59. | :21:03.
men working in the valleys. Not a single one anymore. | :21:03. | :21:10.
Such a big change in the valley. I bred Roy and Fang myself. Roy as | :21:10. | :21:17.
a young dog was very, very tough. Then all of a sudden he started | :21:17. | :21:22.
listening. He has never looked back since then, but Fran was so good | :21:22. | :21:27.
from day one. She is so good to handle. Now I'm training young | :21:28. | :21:32.
sheepdogs. When the sheep are in the middle of the field, nice and | :21:32. | :21:36.
quiet, I let the dog rules and I give them the lay down command. If | :21:36. | :21:40.
you have that little bit of control, you are on your way. | :21:40. | :21:45.
I have been around now for 51 years training dogs. I'm still looking | :21:45. | :21:51.
for the perfect dog. I think if I'm here another 51 years, I'll still | :21:51. | :22:00.
be looking for the perfect dog, but be looking for the perfect dog, but | :22:00. | :22:06.
it is fun trying! Well, to me, John is the perfect handler. He really | :22:06. | :22:12.
is vastly experienced as you heard from all of that. This is his | :22:12. | :22:16.
seventh time on One Man and His Dog, running Roy and Fan. | :22:16. | :22:24.
They are getting everything set up. He is so well known in Wales, they | :22:24. | :22:29.
just say JR. just say JR. | :22:29. | :22:32.
Away goes Fan. So this is the perfect timing. | :22:32. | :22:40.
Holding on to Roy and he sends them off now. Hopefully looking for the | :22:40. | :22:46.
dogs to arrive at a similar time. Fan going well. He is holding Roy | :22:46. | :22:51.
back. He has kicked him wide now. Let's hope that they arrive at the | :22:51. | :22:57.
bottom at the same time. Fan is coming around now nicely, behind | :22:57. | :23:03.
the sheep. She's there. There is Malcolm, our Head of Sheep. | :23:03. | :23:07.
He is holding the sheep at the post at the top there. | :23:07. | :23:12.
He is there to welcome the other dogs. There we are, and the trial | :23:12. | :23:15.
begins. Well, that is a good start. The | :23:15. | :23:19.
dogs have stepped to their own sides. They have not crossed to the | :23:19. | :23:23.
bottom. They are entitled to do that. Now that the dogs have set | :23:23. | :23:28.
off with Fan on the left and Roy on the right, that is the side that | :23:28. | :23:31.
they must stay throughout this particular trial. | :23:31. | :23:35.
The sheep are gently moving towards the line once again to go through | :23:36. | :23:42.
the middle of the fetch gates, but nothing too drastic at the moment. | :23:42. | :23:47.
At the moment John is giving all whistle commands. It is interesting | :23:47. | :23:53.
how they will talk to one in English when it comes to the word | :23:53. | :24:01.
commands and the other in Welsh. Look at that, the dogs for the | :24:01. | :24:11.
:24:11. | :24:16. | ||
outruns, perfection! An excellent start. | :24:16. | :24:22.
Easy as you like. Yes, he has won a couple of big | :24:22. | :24:26.
competitions recently. I think he would love to win this particular | :24:26. | :24:29.
brace competition. Fan is about to retire, but things are going well | :24:29. | :24:38.
at the moment. Yet to lose a point! This is text- | :24:38. | :24:48.
:24:48. | :24:50. | ||
book trialing. So, switching to voice commands. | :24:51. | :24:56.
They are very much within reach. It often gives the dog a little more | :24:56. | :24:59.
confidence to hear you. Yes. | :24:59. | :25:06.
And the fact that he does not need a separate set of words. He has won | :25:06. | :25:16.
:25:16. | :25:23. | ||
on English and one on Welsh. They are looking at Roy. Fan on the | :25:23. | :25:30.
left, Roy on the right. You have to keep them moving on to | :25:30. | :25:35.
the end of the fetch. You may notice that some of the | :25:35. | :25:44.
sheep are wearing colours. They have radio mics in there. | :25:44. | :25:52.
That's a good turn. He is not going to lose many points on that fetch, | :25:52. | :25:59.
that is for sure. No. It is good at the moment. | :25:59. | :26:01.
The maximum scores all the way along. | :26:01. | :26:07.
And look at the pace of it as well. Gently pushing them towards the | :26:07. | :26:12.
first of the cross-drive gates. Come on, let it be a 20. | :26:12. | :26:19.
Oh! It's a 19! Now, where did Kenny and Shirley take off from there, | :26:19. | :26:24.
Gus? I think that is when the dog blinked. | :26:24. | :26:34.
:26:34. | :26:37. | ||
Right! Now this is good. Just a reminder, 12-and-a-half | :26:37. | :26:42.
minutes to complete the course. He can't ease off too much, but he | :26:42. | :26:46.
has to line up all of the sheep properly. To get all ten through. | :26:46. | :26:56.
The gap between the two gates is about seven yards. | :26:56. | :27:01.
It's in a bad position to stop at the moment. He has them going again. | :27:01. | :27:07.
What a trial this is. I know you were saying earlier on that John is | :27:07. | :27:14.
due to -- that Fan is due to retire and Roy coming of age at seven-and- | :27:14. | :27:19.
a-half. He is the stronger of the two. That | :27:19. | :27:26.
is who John has to watch, but Fan has lots of experience. This is | :27:26. | :27:31.
where they can gain experience. This is where the wood can be | :27:31. | :27:35.
difficult as they get to the end of the cross-drive. | :27:35. | :27:40.
It will be interesting to see who comes into the brace team when Fan | :27:40. | :27:44.
retires. You are always looking for that perfect partnership. | :27:44. | :27:49.
They take some finding, but John loves to work brace. He does well | :27:49. | :27:52.
at it. Let's have a word on the woods here. | :27:52. | :27:56.
It has caused some of the sheep to come down. Obviously there is not a | :27:56. | :28:01.
lot of room for the dogs to get between the trees and the sheep? | :28:01. | :28:06.
It will be interesting to see if Roy goes through the wood or cuts | :28:06. | :28:12.
it fine and pushes the sheep high. He needs to go wide. He has gone | :28:12. | :28:20.
through the wood. He had come round there. What a great job he has | :28:20. | :28:30.
:28:30. | :28:33. | ||
done! John! I bet the other competitors are groaning now! | :28:33. | :28:38.
Coming up to the halfway mark as far as time is concerned. No | :28:38. | :28:42.
pressure there. It is a good return. John goes to | :28:42. | :28:52.
:28:52. | :28:54. | ||
the edge of the shedding ring. Now he can walk into the ring itself. | :28:54. | :28:59.
Will he let Fan do it as it is her last time, or will he save her | :28:59. | :29:09.
:29:09. | :29:22. | ||
moves that you see in the everyday life of a shepherd. Splitting the | :29:22. | :29:27.
flock. Getting the sheep into a pen you can split the flock and put one | :29:27. | :29:32.
in one field or one in another. If you have one with bad feet or | :29:32. | :29:37.
something like, that that is how you single one off. Here ewe are | :29:37. | :29:41.
looking for five and five. And they have to stay within the | :29:41. | :29:45.
sawdust ring. Although it seems big on the screen, when you are there, | :29:45. | :29:51.
out in the shedding ring, it is not very big at all. He must keep the | :29:51. | :29:54.
sheep within the ring until he does the shed. Then things should be | :29:54. | :30:04.
:30:04. | :30:14. | ||
get one to join them. Here it comes. Here is the gap coming. He wants to | :30:14. | :30:22.
bring Roy through, Roy comes in. Great stuff, come on Roy! Don't let | :30:22. | :30:27.
that you get back she is going to challenge! Well done! Roy just let | :30:27. | :30:33.
her know who is boss. The sheep are coming in behind him. She is | :30:33. | :30:38.
awkward. That is a shame he has got to regroup them all now and start | :30:38. | :30:41.
again. The reason they have to be regrouped and start again is | :30:41. | :30:45.
because five of them have to go into one pen and five go into | :30:45. | :30:53.
another. So it all starts again and he will laws points there. Yes, -- | :30:53. | :30:57.
he will lose points there. Yes. So there is some pressure now on the | :30:57. | :31:00.
time side of it. Because really I would have been liking something | :31:00. | :31:06.
like five minutes at this stage to get things done. So he is under | :31:06. | :31:16.
:31:16. | :31:18. | ||
pressure now. Let's hope that one is in the first group. Roy's come | :31:18. | :31:28.
:31:28. | :31:32. | ||
through well. Surely that's been accepted? He will work like steam | :31:32. | :31:40.
now. John behind you! He can't hear us, Gus, he can't hear us! They | :31:40. | :31:46.
certainly don't want to stay apart. John's got his work cut out here. | :31:46. | :31:51.
think he will take them way away and to stop any temptation of a | :31:51. | :32:01.
:32:01. | :32:01. | ||
return. Can he do this in three minutes? I don't think so no, I | :32:01. | :32:11.
would be wanting four now. There is some sheep actually in a holding | :32:11. | :32:17.
pen at the right hand side and that sheep has run off. She's gone right | :32:17. | :32:23.
up. Oh dear me look at that. She's jumped in. That will be the end of | :32:23. | :32:27.
the course. They say that the sheep was off the course. We will have to | :32:27. | :32:36.
see what the judges say. We cannot pre-empt anything, but we're to | :32:36. | :32:44.
wait and see if they wave their hands. Yes. John's not sure what | :32:44. | :32:54.
:32:54. | :32:58. | ||
should happen now, but I think he will carry on. He is going carry on. | :32:58. | :33:05.
Well I tell you what, you can't beat this live trialling. It never | :33:05. | :33:08.
goes smoothly! We just need confirmation from the judges that | :33:08. | :33:18.
:33:18. | :33:20. | ||
there has been a disqualification. Thank you! There is the call. | :33:20. | :33:26.
was a real shame. Really was a shame. Look at that, he was 20, | :33:26. | :33:33.
2010, 10, 19, 27 on the cross drive and suddenly straight into the | :33:33. | :33:39.
shedding ring and bang. Yes, he will have his points up to that | :33:39. | :33:44.
going wrong. So although he has been disqualified, he will keep his | :33:44. | :33:52.
points. Here is confirmation of a very good figures -- first half. He | :33:52. | :33:55.
picked up three points in the shedding ring, but after that it | :33:55. | :34:02.
was game over. 109 out of 140 for was game over. 109 out of 140 for | :34:02. | :34:10.
John Griffiths. John I just want to give you a hug. We were watching, | :34:10. | :34:16.
going that is a near perfect round. With the out run, the lift and the | :34:16. | :34:22.
fetch, you only lost four points then what happened? Disaster. One | :34:22. | :34:32.
:34:32. | :34:35. | ||
of them things. It is the sheep. My dog did their best. I think you had | :34:35. | :34:41.
a horrible rogue sheep that jumped the fence and that was disqualified. | :34:41. | :34:47.
The sheep in the shedding damaging the dog. I don't like my dogs | :34:47. | :34:52.
gripping sheep, it's not right. So I told them not the grip the sheep. | :34:52. | :34:57.
Because what do they do in that situation. Fan is 12, that is the | :34:57. | :35:04.
last time. Yes she is retired now. Well it was fantastic at the | :35:04. | :35:11.
beginning, wasn't it Gus and Matt. Of course and we wish Fan the best. | :35:11. | :35:15.
They did work their hearts out. That was a brilliant run-up to the | :35:15. | :35:18.
stage of the shedding ring when we stage of the shedding ring when we | :35:18. | :35:28.
:35:28. | :35:34. | ||
them through that had been a superb trial. Everyone was thinking how | :35:34. | :35:41.
can we beat this guy? But there was the key - she was the one. Yes. A | :35:41. | :35:46.
real rogue sheep. He was given three for that shed any way. So he | :35:46. | :35:51.
got points for all of the work before the break happened. Yes, he | :35:51. | :35:57.
would have lost some points, but there gos that same you again. This | :35:57. | :36:03.
time she's got round and once they jump into the pen like that, then | :36:03. | :36:07.
it is disqualification. It shows how athletic these sheep are and | :36:07. | :36:14.
how much they can change in the blink of an eye. So a disappointing | :36:14. | :36:19.
round for John. 117 is what we need to beat. That is the England score | :36:19. | :36:23.
for Michael. Who is up next is somebody representing Scotland and | :36:23. | :36:28.
who has won the brace in the nationals four years in a row. It | :36:29. | :36:34.
nationals four years in a row. It is Ewan McKinnon with Roy and Nan. | :36:34. | :36:43.
Ray I leave e live near Loch Carron and I'm running Nan and Roy. It is | :36:43. | :36:49.
a super area to enjoy the outdoors, wildlife and walking. There are | :36:49. | :36:55.
lots of B & B and holiday cottages to service the tourist industry and | :36:55. | :36:58.
craft shops. That is the main economy of the area. Especially in | :36:58. | :37:03.
a time like this, we're needing tourists to visit. We get weather | :37:03. | :37:10.
like this all of the time, honest. I'm encouraged to go to a local | :37:10. | :37:15.
trial about 40 year ago and really a year after that I started going | :37:15. | :37:21.
to open trial and snow balled from there. Roy is nine years old and he | :37:21. | :37:26.
is a brother of Nan. Roy is laid back type character. Nan on the | :37:26. | :37:34.
other hand is a more determined dog than Roy. All my dogs are on the | :37:34. | :37:38.
same whistle. That can pwh a problem. Specially in brace | :37:38. | :37:43.
competitions, but I use a slight variation and that usually works. | :37:43. | :37:47.
When it doesn't, I have to resort to shouting. I have been invited to | :37:47. | :37:51.
take part in the competition in previous years, but for one reason | :37:51. | :37:55.
and another I haven't been able to. The first year I was invite and I | :37:55. | :37:58.
had lost my dog just before the competition. Think year I'm hoping | :37:59. | :38:08.
:38:09. | :38:20. | ||
the post, Ewan with Roy and Nan. This is live and I was having a | :38:20. | :38:26.
word with Ewen, he said, I'm shaking in my boots. Roy to the | :38:26. | :38:36.
:38:36. | :38:37. | ||
right, Nan to the left. Hurtling down to the sheep that are waiting | :38:37. | :38:42.
at the post. You may catch a glimpse of Malcolm at the bottom | :38:42. | :38:46.
with his dog, Sam. They just bring the sheep on to the top of the | :38:46. | :38:52.
field. The two dogs that are rung down. There they go. And arriving | :38:52. | :38:57.
with perfect timing. They haven't crossed again. We still have Nan on | :38:57. | :39:03.
the left, Roy on right as they start at the end of the out run on | :39:03. | :39:13.
:39:13. | :39:17. | ||
to the lift. That seems quite a good lift. Phenomenal brace | :39:17. | :39:22.
competitor is Ewen. He has won the brace competition in the nationals | :39:22. | :39:28.
every year since 2008. And Nan, well they're both nine years old, | :39:28. | :39:33.
they're both from the same litter, which is quite something, Nan has | :39:33. | :39:43.
:39:43. | :39:44. | ||
been involved in every one of those wins. On a good line, Gus? Yes, | :39:45. | :39:50.
excellent. Nan even working on her own, she came fourth at the | :39:50. | :39:54.
international supreme last weekend. So she is a superb bitch. Here she | :39:54. | :40:01.
is working with her litter brother. Just two points lost from the two | :40:01. | :40:09.
dogs then. An 18 and a 20. They're looking at roifplt Roy's coming up | :40:09. | :40:16.
darefully. He has got to -- Roy's coming up carefully. One ewe has | :40:16. | :40:20.
turned, Nan is lying down on the left, but the sheep are starting to | :40:20. | :40:27.
move. Roy, don't push too hard! Oh! Six three and four missed. That was | :40:27. | :40:32.
Roy pushing too hard then. But as we saw with John Griffiths, all is | :40:32. | :40:40.
not over until the sheep are in the pen. 10 out of 10 both for the lift. | :40:40. | :40:44.
We are back to normal again. It shows you that bit too much | :40:44. | :40:49.
pressure from Roy, he got them moving, but pushed that bit too | :40:49. | :40:59.
:40:59. | :41:06. | ||
hard and it slipped. I do like Nan. I think she's got a lovely way | :41:06. | :41:16.
:41:16. | :41:17. | ||
about her. She does remind me of my old dog, Meg. Does she? Great! I | :41:17. | :41:21.
think if Ewen had a favourite it would probably be Nan. She has | :41:21. | :41:30.
certainly done him well over the years. She's a very careful sort of | :41:30. | :41:35.
bitch. She's got the power to do this. But she is so careful in | :41:35. | :41:42.
starting. She doesn't want them to burst. Roy watching it all, | :41:42. | :41:46.
intently, look at the intent. he is moving on again. Both dogs | :41:46. | :41:51.
lie down and the sheep are on the move again. Thank goodness. I one | :41:51. | :42:01.
:42:01. | :42:02. | ||
just thinking is it in with a chance. That is probably the end of | :42:02. | :42:12.
:42:12. | :42:14. | ||
the fetch. The points will come shortly. From Kenny and Shirley. | :42:14. | :42:24.
:42:24. | :42:26. | ||
Away they go. 13 out of 20, so seven lost on the fetch. It was | :42:26. | :42:30.
deductions with the six through and the four. He is just having a bit | :42:30. | :42:34.
of trouble trying to get the sheep to keep flowing. He is challenging | :42:34. | :42:42.
the dogs and bringing Roy around as well. We did ask the questions at | :42:42. | :42:47.
the start. One from Kevin, he said I have a six-year-old Colly cross, | :42:47. | :42:53.
do the dogs have to be full Collys to compete? They can use a cross | :42:53. | :42:57.
breed in ordinary trials. But they can't run it in the national | :42:57. | :43:02.
competition. They have got to be registered. So the Kennel Club | :43:02. | :43:06.
version of sleep dog world is the international sheepdog society and | :43:06. | :43:15.
they have got to be Reger theed -- registered with them. A bit of zig- | :43:15. | :43:23.
zagging, but oh! Only two! majority through. Yes the majority | :43:23. | :43:30.
through, now they're racing uphill. There is a battle on here. Roy | :43:30. | :43:40.
:43:40. | :43:41. | ||
lying down, Nan looks after her side. They're taking a wide fling. | :43:41. | :43:44.
So unfortunately Nan has crossed, the judges will be taking points | :43:44. | :43:49.
off here. Roy is coming around. They're stringing back towards the | :43:49. | :43:52.
pen. Again I think they have spotted the sheep in the holding | :43:52. | :44:01.
pen at the right of the course. Well they have been stopped now. | :44:01. | :44:11.
:44:11. | :44:11. | ||
Roy moving now. Coming back with their heads up and they have split. | :44:11. | :44:16.
Roy getting up. Roy on the left, Nan on the right. That is Nan now. | :44:16. | :44:22.
Both dogs coming on towards these sheep and the sheep determined to | :44:22. | :44:25.
push towards the end of the field. And now they know their friends are | :44:25. | :44:29.
in the corner. It will be hard to get them to spin around. I think | :44:29. | :44:34.
these dogs can do it. I think they will do it. But the time is tick by. | :44:34. | :44:42.
That is the worry. Both dogs working together. We're just coming | :44:42. | :44:47.
up to the half way stage, as far as time is concerned and Nan, just as | :44:48. | :44:57.
:44:58. | :45:04. | ||
she was earlier, edging sloely be losing valuable time. | :45:04. | :45:07.
Look at that for a shot. That is wonderful. | :45:07. | :45:14.
. Yes, brother and sister. Working together. | :45:14. | :45:20.
They are all staring! It's a stair- off. | :45:20. | :45:30.
:45:30. | :45:38. | ||
-- it's a stare-off. Now he's moved to the shedding ring. | :45:38. | :45:43.
He is waiting at the shedding ring for them to come there and do the | :45:43. | :45:52.
next stage. We're on the last part of the drive. | :45:52. | :46:01.
You just sense awkwardness from the sheep. When u you get that lift at | :46:01. | :46:07.
the top, you start assessing the sheep if you get one, your heart | :46:07. | :46:13.
sinks. It does. It really does. I bet Euan | :46:13. | :46:18.
has never worked so hard, getting these dogs together, but he is | :46:18. | :46:27.
winning. Coming past the ungated pen. | :46:27. | :46:31.
Their off-line, but they are coming into the shedding ring. So that now | :46:31. | :46:35.
is the end of the drive. It is fine for them to stop here. | :46:35. | :46:40.
The whole idea is that it is steady and then you can do this. You are | :46:40. | :46:45.
aiming to split them down the middle, five on one side and five | :46:45. | :46:54.
on the other. Take five out and leave five in the ring. | :46:54. | :47:01.
So, it is Nan to do the shedding. Only one dog can do it. | :47:01. | :47:07.
Four minutes left on this round. A drive score of five out of 30. | :47:08. | :47:14.
We were talking about heart sinking. If you saw the scoreboard. So, so | :47:14. | :47:24.
:47:24. | :47:31. | ||
disappointed. He is using Nan. Just the one dog | :47:31. | :47:34.
is allowed. Looking for that opportunity. | :47:34. | :47:39.
There is no deductions for how long it takes to do the shed, but there | :47:40. | :47:42.
are deductions if an opportunity passes by. | :47:42. | :47:46.
That's right. He is trying to get them to string out a little bit in | :47:46. | :47:51.
the ring. Here is the chance coming. Now he has to keep them separate. | :47:51. | :47:59.
Keep them separate but try to get them back together as well. | :47:59. | :48:06.
Oh, dear oh, dear. That's exactly what happened with | :48:06. | :48:11.
John. So they have to be re-grouped. Put back into the ring and split | :48:11. | :48:16.
again. So, more points will be lost in | :48:16. | :48:20.
that shedding ring. The clock keeps on ticking. It really does. | :48:20. | :48:28.
It is not looking good now. Oh, dear, Gus. Just two-and-a-half | :48:28. | :48:33.
minutes to go. The way that these sheep are, they | :48:33. | :48:39.
are not wanting to be split, even when the dog comes between them. He | :48:39. | :48:49.
:48:49. | :48:54. | ||
still has problems. So he has to start all over again. | :48:54. | :49:04.
There is a chance coming again now. Here we go again. I thought they | :49:04. | :49:13.
were going to hurtle straight in. And for the third time he has to do | :49:13. | :49:22.
the split. Well, what can you say about these | :49:23. | :49:29.
sheep, Gus? Well, John is watching. He is commiserating, no doubt with | :49:29. | :49:39.
:49:39. | :49:40. | ||
him. He knows what it is like. John scored 109. | :49:40. | :49:50.
:49:50. | :49:56. | ||
So far, 76 forb E uan. -- 76 for Eaan. | :49:56. | :50:06.
:50:06. | :50:06. | ||
He has one minute to try to get the rest of this trial in. | :50:06. | :50:16.
:50:16. | :50:17. | ||
There is another one trying. They really are testing sheep. | :50:17. | :50:23.
It looks like the other set are going back. They are. They are | :50:23. | :50:27.
trying for the back pen. There you can see from the clock | :50:27. | :50:32.
there is really not much time to recover this. Just half a minute is | :50:32. | :50:36.
left. The first sheep are going through | :50:37. | :50:42.
the cross-drive gates eat the top of the field. | :50:42. | :50:52.
:50:52. | :50:52. | ||
We are down to 12 seconds... Ten seconds. It is not looking good. | :50:53. | :50:58.
That is it. What a shame. | :50:58. | :51:07.
Indeed. Oh, my word! What can you? Well, Roy and Nan did their very, | :51:07. | :51:10.
very ebest. Everybody know it is is just the luck of the draw with the | :51:11. | :51:20.
:51:21. | :51:21. | ||
sheep. It certainly is. It certainly is. | :51:21. | :51:31.
:51:31. | :51:31. | ||
Nan sa is saying, "Look, though, Dad." Unfortunately, the clock was | :51:31. | :51:36.
the one that finished everything. And the other lot are in the woods. | :51:37. | :51:46.
:51:47. | :51:54. | ||
There is a similar tale for Ewan. That is it for Ewan, a score of 78 | :51:54. | :51:57.
That is it for Ewan, a score of 78 out of 140. | :51:57. | :52:02.
Ewan, you worked so hard in that round, but disappointing for you, I | :52:02. | :52:07.
bet? Yeah, it is. How do you feel? Disappointed, but | :52:07. | :52:13.
we tried our best. It went so wrong early on. | :52:13. | :52:18.
Yes. Just at my feet there. On the fetch, but around my feet both dogs | :52:19. | :52:22.
seemed to take the eye off the sheep. That was it. | :52:22. | :52:26.
Is that what happened? It was not a sheep being stroppy, because they | :52:26. | :52:32.
were strop I sn. They were stroppy, but the dogs just didn't like the | :52:32. | :52:37.
sheep. The way that the sheep were behaving. The dogs didn't like it. | :52:37. | :52:40.
When they get like that, they take the eye and it is very difficult to | :52:40. | :52:45.
get them to move. Well, I don't even want to tell you | :52:45. | :52:49.
your final score. It was 78, but thank you very much for competing. | :52:49. | :52:56.
I'm sure it's a disappointing round. With John it was a great first half. | :52:56. | :53:01.
It all happened at the shed. We have to do something with this | :53:01. | :53:05.
shedding ring. In order to get to the shedding ring you have to get | :53:05. | :53:08.
through the second drive gate. They were coming at some pace. | :53:08. | :53:15.
Yes. They tend to dash across this course and of course the dogs cross, | :53:15. | :53:21.
the sheep did not stop. They challenge the dogs. He had to get | :53:21. | :53:26.
both dogs to do their best to try to push them away. They had | :53:26. | :53:29.
problems. We have put sheeting up against the | :53:29. | :53:33.
sheep being held in the pen on the opposite side. Still they can | :53:33. | :53:37.
contact them. They can hear them. Maybe they are desperate to get | :53:37. | :53:42.
back to them. They have had to re- group. This is one of the many | :53:42. | :53:44.
group. This is one of the many attempts. | :53:44. | :53:49.
A lot of dogs would have gripped there. She didn't. It was a shame. | :53:49. | :53:54.
He couldn't keep them into the ring itself. | :53:55. | :54:02.
And as we saw, just out of time. Well, disappointing for Ewan. | :54:02. | :54:07.
Disappointing for John from Wales. 117 is the score to beat. That is | :54:07. | :54:11.
what Michael got. He was representing England. Let's see how | :54:11. | :54:16.
our final competitor does. He is representing Ireland. He first | :54:16. | :54:21.
appeared in One Man and His Dog in 2002. Let's meet him. | :54:21. | :54:31.
:54:31. | :54:31. | ||
It is Frank Cash tonne. I come from County Wexford. I am | :54:31. | :54:37.
running this competition with Jip and Claire. | :54:37. | :54:43.
I have had a family farm that's been in the family for three | :54:43. | :54:47.
generations. We have been getting a lot of rain | :54:47. | :54:51.
at the present, but on the bright side we have lots of grown grass | :54:51. | :54:53.
growing for all of our hungry growing for all of our hungry | :54:54. | :54:59.
animals. When I moved here in 1990, my wife did the herding on | :54:59. | :55:04.
horseback. I did not like to venture on horseback. I thought it | :55:04. | :55:09.
safer to stand on the ground. That is how I ended up with the | :55:09. | :55:12.
sheepdogs. Claire is eight years old. She is very keen to get on | :55:12. | :55:17.
with the job. Sometimes she can get a little exited. Jip is the | :55:17. | :55:22.
opposite. He is a cool customer. He is six years old. He is a nosey | :55:22. | :55:26.
type of dog, he loves to run down, jump in and have a good swim for | :55:27. | :55:32.
himself. I have a lot of help on the farm from my daughters to feed | :55:32. | :55:39.
the chickens, hens, ducks. We also have a pot-bellied pig, which is | :55:39. | :55:43.
quite hungry! I'm really looking forward to this year's competition. | :55:43. | :55:47.
There is some great competitors in it. I'm looking forward to the | :55:47. | :55:57.
:55:57. | :56:09. | ||
And Claire -- Clare is named after one of his daughters, Clare. | :56:09. | :56:15.
Great stuff. So, Clare e and Jip. | :56:15. | :56:25.
:56:25. | :56:28. | ||
Clare off the right and there goes Jip. Frank is a carpenter by trade. | :56:28. | :56:32.
Let's see eif he can work his magic here. | :56:32. | :56:36.
She is experienced at brace running. I've seen him have some brilliant | :56:36. | :56:40.
runs. At the moment things are going well. The dog is going down | :56:40. | :56:50.
nicely there. Clare on the left. He has three national Brace titles | :56:50. | :56:53.
to his name. Clare is over to the left. | :56:53. | :57:00.
Jip is on the right. Again, he is trying for a steady | :57:00. | :57:10.
:57:10. | :57:11. | ||
lift. Clare coming up nicely. Look at that. That was a good lift. | :57:11. | :57:16.
A nice start. Well the key here is literally to | :57:16. | :57:23.
get round, isn't it? Let's not get past the shedding ring, he'll be | :57:23. | :57:27.
doing incredibly well. He may well. He has the ability. He | :57:27. | :57:31.
has the dogs to do it, but will the sheep allow him. | :57:31. | :57:41.
:57:41. | :58:08. | ||
So, as Michaela said, a score of had seen what had happened to the | :58:08. | :58:11.
previous handlers would you push on if the first section to give you | :58:11. | :58:19.
more time in the end or try to keep it calm? I would do more or less | :58:19. | :58:27.
what Frank is doing now. He is not letting them stop, but there is a | :58:27. | :58:31.
yew on the right-hand, looking all the time to escape. Jip is keeping | :58:31. | :58:41.
the pressure on to her. So far, keeping them in check. I | :58:41. | :58:48.
would be worried about the two sheep on the right. | :58:48. | :58:53.
Those two sheep on the right now, those are the ones I would be | :58:53. | :58:59.
worried about. If you were not careful they could bolt off the | :58:59. | :59:03.
coursement, but they are being held. They are keen to go on the right of | :59:03. | :59:13.
:59:13. | :59:22. | ||
think Gyp's up to it. She is holding her ground. It's started. | :59:22. | :59:27.
This is the awkward sheep. Here is the battle on. Are the dogs going | :59:27. | :59:32.
to convince this sheep the best thing to do is turn around and join | :59:32. | :59:38.
the others. Should I? Yes I think I will. Get the two of them on board. | :59:38. | :59:44.
That is the way. A bit more pressure now. Claire just a bit | :59:44. | :59:50.
flirty. There is another one in there that is keen to have a go. | :59:50. | :59:58.
Gyp's coming on nice and steady. Well that is the first hurdle over. | :59:58. | :00:04.
Now on to the drive. All these handlers making it look so easy. | :00:04. | :00:08.
But there is a real knack to working a brace. There is, if | :00:08. | :00:14.
things are going right, you feel great. But two dogs, if things go | :00:14. | :00:23.
wrong then it is double trouble. is doing his best to keep them nice | :00:23. | :00:29.
and steady at this stage. The fetch score is 18 out of 20. So scoring | :00:29. | :00:37.
well. Very good. You have got to stop here and try and ease them | :00:37. | :00:46.
forward. They're not shy, are they? No. Oh Claire. Claire is the one | :00:46. | :00:52.
now, the smooth-coated dog lying down that he with can see. There is | :00:52. | :00:59.
Gyp coming saying, I'll give you a hand Claire! Frank won the | :00:59. | :01:05.
international in 1997 so there won't be any situations he has not | :01:06. | :01:14.
been in. But these sheep are wanting to challenge the dogs. | :01:14. | :01:21.
very good to just get them off and running again. She is going to have | :01:21. | :01:25.
to stop them coming on the right hand side of the gates. She is | :01:25. | :01:33.
lying down waiting for a command. That looks good to me. That is it. | :01:33. | :01:40.
Round comes Gyp. Now let' hope they don't go racing across and they are | :01:40. | :01:47.
again. He has got to really now get Claire to run fast up the inside 5 | :01:47. | :01:52.
keep them back. This is the tricky thing to stay in contact with them | :01:52. | :01:57.
and not push them and go. He is going right round the back of the | :01:57. | :02:01.
wood. So I think they're going to miss. It is a tremendous run. He | :02:01. | :02:05.
has come round. He has covered them. The sheep have gone past the | :02:05. | :02:10.
obstacle, so there will be points lost. Whether he can get them back. | :02:10. | :02:15.
But they have gone past it, but they haven't on the line gone | :02:15. | :02:19.
through the line as such. There is enough room to bring them back in. | :02:19. | :02:24.
He is still in with a chance. We will see whether he does try to get | :02:24. | :02:34.
:02:34. | :02:34. | ||
them through the second drive gate. He is getting them back. It's over! | :02:34. | :02:40.
Oh no they have come through. So unfortunately all the sheep then | :02:40. | :02:44.
have missed the second drive. As they come back down. But I think | :02:44. | :02:48.
there the rough coasted Gyp did a tremendous job. He has bossed those | :02:48. | :02:52.
sheep and in they come into the shedding ring. Let's hope we have | :02:52. | :02:58.
no breaks to the right. I wonder if Frank was thinking to himself, I'm | :02:58. | :03:02.
not going to push things and just bring them up to the shedding ring | :03:02. | :03:12.
:03:12. | :03:16. | ||
and crack on. I think he would have done. Cut his losses really. Well | :03:16. | :03:26.
:03:26. | :03:29. | ||
16 out of 30. Not too costly Cor -- considering. There are still three | :03:29. | :03:34.
stages to do yet. Let's see how he does. I'm very impressed with the | :03:34. | :03:40.
way the Gyp dog is working. That is the one he is using to split these | :03:40. | :03:43.
sheep now. There is a lot of people out there who are keen to give | :03:43. | :03:50.
their dogs a go. People are asking are any other breeds ever used in | :03:50. | :03:54.
sheepdog trialling. Maybe not on the field but in the yard at home. | :03:54. | :03:59.
Even in sheepdog trialling we get some bearded Collys that are still | :03:59. | :04:09.
:04:09. | :04:09. | ||
working. We were talking last night about Jack Russells being heel | :04:09. | :04:14.
Nippers. But yes from a trialling point of view I have never seen a | :04:14. | :04:21.
Jack Russell in the trial ring, apart from one that has escaped. We | :04:21. | :04:26.
have got kelpys that are used, but they often work too close to the | :04:26. | :04:36.
:04:36. | :04:40. | ||
sheep and are not strong enough really. Well Michael Longton from | :04:40. | :04:45.
England at this stage in the trial just one point ahead. But he did | :04:45. | :04:54.
very well. After this stage. So all is not lost yet. Four minutes to go. | :04:54. | :05:02.
It looks like he has been successful. Now, can he keep them | :05:02. | :05:06.
separate? Is the main thing. There is one wanting to come back and | :05:06. | :05:14.
join them. Split them and get them as far away from each other as | :05:14. | :05:23.
possible. We still haven't had confirmation from the judge that | :05:23. | :05:33.
:05:33. | :05:34. | ||
that shed had been accepted. Oh dear it's happened again! They're | :05:34. | :05:39.
break again. Are they going to get together. Oh my word. Now... And | :05:39. | :05:46.
she came the wrong side then. Claire came on the wrong side of | :05:46. | :05:55.
the sheep then. So we're back to now what happened to Ewen. Troubles. | :05:55. | :06:00.
Ewen and John. This is just incredible. Yes. Even if that shed | :06:00. | :06:07.
was accepted, it is irrelevant now, because Michael, he knows he's got | :06:07. | :06:17.
:06:17. | :06:19. | ||
it. Kevin from Wales. He knows. The brace is his. Well this is where | :06:19. | :06:24.
Gyp, after all this good work could well lose her temper and do a grip, | :06:24. | :06:31.
which we don't want. But he is working well. At least Gyp has that | :06:31. | :06:40.
bit more push than Claire. That is why he is using them. So back into | :06:40. | :06:50.
:06:50. | :06:51. | ||
the shedding ring they have got to come. Well we have only got two | :06:51. | :06:57.
minutes to go. It's not looking good. Absolutely no chance. You | :06:57. | :07:01.
would think it could happen once, but three times. Yes, very | :07:01. | :07:11.
:07:11. | :07:19. | ||
disappointing for all the handlers no doubt. Frank very patiently | :07:19. | :07:28.
starting all over again. Oh it is a hat off job! Trying Eigg now. | :07:28. | :07:33.
Encouraging the -- Trying everything now. Encouraging the | :07:33. | :07:40.
sheep to split. They're breaking like mad. But she will, Gyp will do | :07:40. | :07:45.
it and stop those sheep. Done a great job there. Oh back together | :07:45. | :07:49.
again! There is a minute to go and still it looks as if nothing's | :07:49. | :07:59.
:07:59. | :08:01. | ||
happened in the shedding ring. That is just extraordinary. What a shame. | :08:02. | :08:07.
There is nothing he can do with 45 seconds to do. But they will come | :08:07. | :08:11.
back into the shedding ring and no doubt Frank will do his best to | :08:11. | :08:18.
finish with his head held high. know one of the local handlers said | :08:18. | :08:21.
the biggest trouble with these sheep will be splitting they will | :08:21. | :08:25.
and he was right. They don't like being separated. They just want the | :08:25. | :08:31.
try and stick together. But it's not looking good now. Oh dear we | :08:31. | :08:36.
are down into the last quarter minute. 10 seconds now and below | :08:36. | :08:46.
:08:46. | :08:48. | ||
that. There will be nothing awarded here. Time! Unfortunately time up. | :08:48. | :08:54.
What a shame. What a shame indeed. But again it is the same story, | :08:54. | :09:01.
John knows exactly how he feels. As does Ewen. Well the international | :09:01. | :09:11.
:09:11. | :09:11. | ||
champion, the former international champion from 1997 runs out of time. | :09:11. | :09:16.
So confirmation then of the same story a brilliant start and then | :09:16. | :09:22.
come to the shedding, and it all goes drastically wrong. Finished | :09:22. | :09:28.
with three zeros, that is a score of 92 out of 140. So that is third | :09:28. | :09:35.
of 92 out of 140. So that is third out of four. Ray Oh Frank! You had | :09:35. | :09:39.
the same problem as John didn't you? Yes. It was all going | :09:39. | :09:43.
brilliantly until the drive and then what happened? It started when | :09:43. | :09:48.
I got through the gate here. They were testing the dogs. They got | :09:49. | :09:58.
through the gate and took off. And the dog went to side and they | :09:58. | :10:03.
couldn't catch him quick enough and the shedding ring is off. They went | :10:03. | :10:08.
whield the sheep. Ewen said the problem was the dogs took their | :10:08. | :10:13.
eyes off the sheep. But that is not what happened with your dogs. | :10:13. | :10:18.
the dog went wide and when they got to the shedding ring, then I took | :10:18. | :10:21.
the chance to maybe I would split off Faye and push them on. I | :10:21. | :10:26.
thought I had pulled the other dog in, the minute I went to call her, | :10:26. | :10:31.
everything went. It was a good start, disappointing finish. Let's | :10:32. | :10:40.
see what Gus and Matt have to say about that. Another disappointing | :10:40. | :10:44.
round. MATT BAKER: A great effort. None of them let anyone down it was | :10:44. | :10:51.
just the sheep. Bolshy is the word to describe them. Oh dear just... | :10:51. | :10:59.
There is two cogst -- dogs and that ewe was challenging from the word | :10:59. | :11:02.
go. There is not much you can do when they start stamping and | :11:02. | :11:07.
looking and saying, you don't bother me. But there is the first | :11:07. | :11:12.
bother me. But there is the first of the cross drive gates. And then | :11:12. | :11:17.
they tend to race and they race across here. They're probably | :11:17. | :11:21.
hurtling to the higher ground, because the right hand side of the | :11:21. | :11:26.
course is higher and sheep will naturally go uphill. Because they | :11:26. | :11:30.
can sense action with the sheep in the corner. And the trouble was the | :11:30. | :11:36.
dog went very wide, but did stop them get eight way and then we had | :11:36. | :11:45.
this problems in the shedding ring. Even they separated them, the best | :11:45. | :11:50.
that they could, city still got back together. -- they still got | :11:50. | :11:54.
back together. The sun came out for the finish, but unfortunately they | :11:54. | :11:59.
the finish, but unfortunately they didn't end up in the pen. Ray after | :11:59. | :12:02.
those incredible performances let's remind ourselves of the score tpwrs | :12:02. | :12:12.
:12:12. | :12:19. | ||
that round and see what happened to England are in the lead. A the | :12:19. | :12:24.
others had disappointing rounds. 78 was the lowest with Ewen. | :12:24. | :12:34.
:12:34. | :12:35. | ||
Everything went wrong for poor o' - - old Ewen. Look at the final | :12:35. | :12:40.
scores, Ireland at the top with 127 when we add the brace scores to the | :12:40. | :12:50.
young handlers. Actually remarkably close aren't they? Look at that, | :12:50. | :12:54.
there is just one point in pit. It is extraordinary. I can't believe | :12:54. | :12:59.
that happened three times. I can't believe the whole competition today, | :12:59. | :13:04.
pause so many people had rounds they just didn't expect at all. | :13:04. | :13:09.
It feels so calm now, but you have to mention the fact that this has | :13:09. | :13:13.
been live. And the composure for us to be out thr was something. But it | :13:13. | :13:17.
doesn't end. There is more excitement tomorrow when it is turn | :13:18. | :13:24.
of the singles competition thasm --. That is one man and one dog. There | :13:24. | :13:31. |
