Conference, as your business convener of five years, welcome to | :00:13. | :00:18.
the 82nd national conferencd of the Scottish National Party. And of | :00:19. | :00:30.
course, welcome to the wonddrful city of Glasgow. The first thing I | :00:31. | :00:35.
would like to do is for you to give a warm welcome to your fant`stic | :00:36. | :00:41.
candidates for the deputy ldadership of the party. Please welcomd your | :00:42. | :00:43.
candidates. I think we are all agreed that there | :00:44. | :01:10.
is a high calibre of candid`tes and the announcement will come shortly. | :01:11. | :01:16.
But let's just reflect on the fact that this is our first partx | :01:17. | :01:19.
conference since we won the Scottish Parliament elections in May 201 . Of | :01:20. | :01:33.
course, where our party leader, Nicola Sturgeon, secured her | :01:34. | :01:38.
personal mandate to become First Minister Scotland. The delegates, | :01:39. | :01:49.
let me tell you, as your business convener, that this is the biggest | :01:50. | :01:55.
ever conference in the history of the SNP. And it's not just the | :01:56. | :02:08.
biggest party political conference in Scotland. It is the biggdst party | :02:09. | :02:11.
political conference in the UK. 3000 delegates, 500 media, 020 | :02:12. | :02:32.
fringe events and 35 debates that we will hold over the next few days, | :02:33. | :02:38.
and still they come in. And of course, we have embarked on further | :02:39. | :02:46.
delegate empowerment with ED ballot -- de e-ballot, because that is the | :02:47. | :02:54.
SNP, a Democratic and inclusive party for Scotland, an incltsive and | :02:55. | :03:06.
democratic country. And as H look at all the delegates still comhng under | :03:07. | :03:11.
various tiers in this auditorium, the capacity of 3000, I think it | :03:12. | :03:21.
must have been designed espdcially. But as we fill this hole, I want you | :03:22. | :03:25.
to now welcome your national secretary, who will give yot the | :03:26. | :03:29.
announcement of the results for the deputy leadership of the party. | :03:30. | :03:43.
Please welcome Patrick Gradx, MP. Thank you, conference. I can | :03:44. | :03:47.
announce the results of the ballot for deputy leader of the Scottish | :03:48. | :03:52.
National Party. I will annotnce the results in percentage terms and then | :03:53. | :03:57.
a full breakdown of the votds were republished on the party website | :03:58. | :04:03.
later today. In the first round the percentage received by each | :04:04. | :04:06.
candidate was as follows. Chris Macca Laney, 3.38%. Alan Smhth, | :04:07. | :04:22.
18.6%. Tommy Sheppard, 25.53%. Angus Robertson, 52.5%. I therefore | :04:23. | :04:32.
declare that Angus Robertson, MP, has been elected as deputy leader of | :04:33. | :04:38.
the Scottish National Party. Well, how many of you turned up to | :04:39. | :05:03.
the hustings? Quite a lot of you. Well, thank you to all of you. On | :05:04. | :05:13.
the of us, we spent weeks and weeks travelling from tainted Peebles | :05:14. | :05:15.
from Aberdeenshire to the south west of the country. Around 30 htstings, | :05:16. | :05:27.
packed. Lots of ideas and qtestions. I have been absolutely bowldd over | :05:28. | :05:34.
to be elected as the deputy leader of the Scottish National Party, so | :05:35. | :05:37.
thank you to all of you who voted for me, and thank you to all of you | :05:38. | :05:41.
who voted for the other candidates. I think it is a model electhon | :05:42. | :05:47.
process and all of our membdrs should be proud about the | :05:48. | :05:50.
constructive way in which wd hold our internal debates. Thank you very | :05:51. | :06:01.
much. My campaign themes in this election were about leadership, | :06:02. | :06:09.
grassroots and independence. I think it makes perfect sense for the | :06:10. | :06:13.
leadership team of the SNP to be made up of our leader in thd | :06:14. | :06:17.
Scottish Government and Parliament, Nicola Sturgeon, how First Linister, | :06:18. | :06:20.
and the leader of the SNP at Westminster. It makes sense that our | :06:21. | :06:28.
leadership team reflects Scotland. Nicola is a fantastic representative | :06:29. | :06:33.
of this great city in centr`l Scotland, myself, a parliamdntarian | :06:34. | :06:37.
living and working in a part of rural Scotland. We are the Scottish | :06:38. | :06:41.
National Party. The clue is in the name. We represent the whold of the | :06:42. | :06:46.
country and everybody who lhves here, regardless of where wd come | :06:47. | :06:49.
from, and we should never forget that. We are the most effective | :06:50. | :07:00.
political party in this country Our strength comes from our members our | :07:01. | :07:06.
branches, our local grassroots campaigning and our partnership with | :07:07. | :07:09.
councillors and parliamentarians. We need to make sure our organhsation, | :07:10. | :07:14.
our policy-making and campahgn techniques keep pace with the rapid | :07:15. | :07:18.
growth in membership. We nedd to empower everybody, every ond of our | :07:19. | :07:25.
members who wants to play a part. We have big challenges ahead and big | :07:26. | :07:30.
opportunities. We are very close to independence, and we must start | :07:31. | :07:33.
campaigning right now to persuade people who didn't vote yes hn 2 14. | :07:34. | :07:45.
Securing 45% support in the independence referendum was a great | :07:46. | :07:47.
achievement, but we must re`ch out to the 55% who voted no in 2014 I | :07:48. | :07:54.
believe the SNP deputy leaddr has a big job to make this happen, and I | :07:55. | :07:59.
will work with Nicola Sturgdon to make this happen. I will also work | :08:00. | :08:03.
with my fellow candidates, who came up with some great ideas. All of us | :08:04. | :08:07.
stood on distinctive platforms. I undertook to help deliver on all of | :08:08. | :08:12.
the best proposals. To Tommx Sheppard, who focused on thd upgrade | :08:13. | :08:17.
that we all want, there is luch that can be delivered. To Alan Slith who | :08:18. | :08:21.
wants to protect our place hn Europe, we must work togethdr on | :08:22. | :08:25.
that. And to Chris, who highlighted the importance of our counchllors | :08:26. | :08:29.
and the forthcoming local government elections, we have to work together | :08:30. | :08:39.
to get that right. Last but not least, you cannot run for office | :08:40. | :08:44.
like this without the support of some key people, and I would like to | :08:45. | :08:48.
make special mention is to Nathan Sparling, Pete Dems and my wife | :08:49. | :08:52.
Jennifer, who put many hours, many miles and many social media updates | :08:53. | :08:56.
and many hustings behind thdm. Do you, the members of the SNP, thank | :08:57. | :09:03.
you for doing me a tremendots honour and electing as deputy leaddr. I | :09:04. | :09:09.
look forward to working for you with you and with Nicola Sttrgeon | :09:10. | :09:12.
for our country and everybody who lives here to deliver the | :09:13. | :09:15.
independence that we all sedk. Thank you very much. | :09:16. | :09:23.
Conference, welcome. Welcomd to the dear green place, the great city of | :09:24. | :10:08.
Glasgow, a city that said yds in 2014, a city where every single | :10:09. | :10:16.
citizen is now represented hn the Scottish parliament by an SNP | :10:17. | :10:18.
constituency MSP. Let me begin today by warmlx | :10:19. | :10:32.
congratulating our new deputy leader, Angus Robertson. Conference, | :10:33. | :10:43.
we had four first-class candidates to choose from. Indeed, we had more | :10:44. | :10:49.
quality in our race for deptty leader than Labour managed hn its | :10:50. | :10:58.
election for leader. So let me, on your behalf, thank Tommy, Alan and | :10:59. | :11:03.
Chris for bringing their talents, their energy and their ideas to the | :11:04. | :11:08.
contest. Each of you has a lassive contribution to make to the future | :11:09. | :11:19.
of our party. And Angus, yot will be an outstanding deputy leader. I am | :11:20. | :11:24.
delighted to have you by my side and I look forward to working whth you | :11:25. | :11:29.
as we lead our party and our country to even greater success. | :11:30. | :11:41. |
