royal Highland Show 2013. Most of us have been here for the full four | :00:16. | :00:21.
days. Sampling some of the wonderful atmosphere and amazing food of this | :00:21. | :00:31.
:00:31. | :00:31. | ||
Show. Over the next 25 minutes we will bring you some you some of top | :00:31. | :00:39.
life Stock Market exhibitors. And without further ado, let's get | :00:39. | :00:49.
:00:49. | :01:12. | ||
for grabs this week, but none are more press dingous than this, the | :01:12. | :01:19.
Queens Cup. -- press dingous. It rotates between beef cattle, sheep | :01:20. | :01:29.
and goats. This year it will be awarded to the dairy sector. | :01:29. | :01:38.
winners is the Holstein from Brian Yates. So the Queens Cup being | :01:38. | :01:44.
presented to the Holstein winner individual supreme animal of the | :01:44. | :01:52.
year to Brian Yates. Well now with two happy people. The judge, first, | :01:52. | :01:59.
why this animal? She has that over all balance that bit more bloom in | :01:59. | :02:05.
the udder than the one in second place. She has that advantage for me | :02:05. | :02:15.
:02:15. | :02:16. | ||
on the day. But two very good cows at the top. It was close between the | :02:16. | :02:23.
Jersey and Ayrshire. They were both similar cows. It is strange how | :02:23. | :02:27.
thing things change. The Jersey just sagged a bit and didn't quite keep | :02:27. | :02:31.
herself, didn't look as well in line as she did on the move that. Made | :02:31. | :02:37.
the difference. You a happy man Absolutely delighted. It is a dream | :02:37. | :02:44.
come true to win the Queens Cup is one thing that doesn't happen very | :02:44. | :02:52.
often. You're bottling it in.Yes it means so much. In a cold-blood | :02:52. | :02:57.
commercial sense does it mean a lot? Yes, because we do the job for the | :02:57. | :03:04.
joy of the animal. Do you -- did you expect her to win? No, because the | :03:04. | :03:09.
competition was so strong in the section. So delighted to win when | :03:09. | :03:18.
the competition was so strong is extra special. There you have it out | :03:18. | :03:24.
of 6,000 ouis ouises -- trophies this is the winner of Queens kuch. | :03:24. | :03:32.
Well done you too! Here at the show there are horses of all shapes and | :03:32. | :03:39.
sizes, from the tiniest Shetland ponies to these big Clydesdales. | :03:39. | :03:46.
are down here to enjoy the Highland Show, it is one of best driving | :03:46. | :03:52.
shows in Scotland. Are you hope fog Arwyn? We --Are you hoping for a | :03:52. | :03:58.
win. If we come up the line that is great. Do you think I could hitch a | :03:58. | :04:08.
lift. No bother, we can easy put you on board, like. The president of the | :04:08. | :04:12.
show is Jamie Williamson from Alvie estate in the Highlands. One of his | :04:12. | :04:18.
job is to use the sthoe promote the region and one -- show to promote | :04:18. | :04:24.
the region and they will use local chefs to create street food. It is a | :04:24. | :04:27.
tremendous opportunity to promote food from the Highlands, not only | :04:27. | :04:32.
the produce but the chefs and this is a great opportunity with so many | :04:32. | :04:42.
:04:42. | :04:48. | ||
people here to show just what the hall, the chefs are about in the | :04:48. | :04:53.
countryside area and just look at countryside area and just look at | :04:53. | :05:02.
the queue. Knock, knock, can I come in. Come on in.I know you're in the | :05:02. | :05:07.
middle of stuff. Can I help? We have some scallops there. You can do | :05:07. | :05:15.
that. No problem. A splash of that. Where have you come from? I've come | :05:15. | :05:25.
:05:25. | :05:26. | ||
from or the den -- Torriden. We have some smoked salmon and scallops and | :05:26. | :05:34.
some home madeburgers. We have got -- made made burgers. And how is | :05:34. | :05:40.
trade? It is going well. We have a sweat on today. Can I mop your brow? | :05:40. | :05:49.
I am not helping at all! Can I help in any way. We are taking orders and | :05:49. | :05:56.
then let me know, can you write this down. Two salmon.Have you been busy | :05:56. | :06:01.
today? Yes it has been really busy. There are so many more people than | :06:01. | :06:05.
yesterday. I think because everyone knows where we are. I don't want to | :06:05. | :06:15.
:06:15. | :06:16. | ||
slow things down. Are you waiting to order? Well it is a simple idea, | :06:16. | :06:20.
bring the best produce the Highlands and Islands have to offer, cook it | :06:20. | :06:30.
:06:30. | :06:31. | ||
in a portable stall and the crowds will come flocking. Sheep shearing | :06:31. | :06:36.
is one of the most intense competitions here, the guys work | :06:36. | :06:42.
very fast and I'm catching up with Colin McGregor, from the British | :06:42. | :06:47.
wool marketing board. Tell me how competitive is this sport? It is | :06:47. | :06:51.
immensely competitive. It is a sport. These guys are practicing for | :06:51. | :06:54.
weeks in advance of the competition herement every day it is perhaps | :06:54. | :06:59.
their work. But it is also their sport, their hobby, they want to | :06:59. | :07:05.
come here and do good. The current world champion is a Scotsman. Yes it | :07:05. | :07:11.
is the second Scots mavrn ever to win the world -- Scotsman ever to | :07:11. | :07:17.
win. I have been trying to pick up some hints, but they work so fast. | :07:17. | :07:23.
Can you give me some basic hints. won't be a problem. We will maybe | :07:23. | :07:28.
get you to put a few blows in on the last side. Here is a young farmers | :07:28. | :07:34.
champion, Stuart, he will give us a demonstration. This is a Scottish | :07:34. | :07:38.
black-faced sheep. They're a little bit lively. Stuart is coming down | :07:38. | :07:45.
the belly. It is always the belly we remove first. What are the judges | :07:45. | :07:50.
looking for? It is important to keep this stable as fast as possible | :07:50. | :08:00.
:08:00. | :08:00. | ||
zmrchlt what is the fastest -- as possible. What is the fastest?The | :08:00. | :08:05.
fastest is 16 seconds. That is insane. Will I have a goo with this | :08:05. | :08:11.
one. You can do a little on the side. You can fit in there and | :08:11. | :08:19.
another one in there. And put the head between your legs. Just hold is | :08:19. | :08:26.
there. I will start it. Lay it on the skin and just keep it on the | :08:26. | :08:33.
skin and go forward gently. You do the next one yourself. That is good. | :08:33. | :08:43.
:08:43. | :08:47. | ||
On you go. Out of the leg, right giving this poor animal a hair cut | :08:47. | :08:54.
and leave it to the pecks erpts. It's -- experts. It is incredibly | :08:54. | :09:01.
hard work. I can't believe they can do a sheep in under 40 seconds. | :09:01. | :09:07.
show is a paradise for horse lovers. Behind me riders are getting ready | :09:07. | :09:11.
for the Andrew Black Cup, where competitors get the chance to double | :09:12. | :09:21.
:09:22. | :09:23. | ||
their money. This is a speed class, a one round class. It is the second | :09:23. | :09:30.
highest prize fund. The winner is jumping for 1,300. The first three | :09:30. | :09:35.
come in again and jump the same round and it is a double your money | :09:35. | :09:39.
time. Which ever one wince out of the second round, they -- wins out | :09:39. | :09:46.
of second round, they double their money. So they will double the | :09:46. | :09:52.
1,300. So there is a lot at stake. You can go in and jump two rounds | :09:52. | :10:00.
and come back with 2,600. Not bad for half an hour's work. The winner | :10:00. | :10:08.
of first round is Jemma Kirke. The top three will now jump again to try | :10:08. | :10:14.
and double their money. What class of rider are you attracting? We have | :10:14. | :10:18.
the top Scottish riders. This is the biggest show in Scotland in terms of | :10:18. | :10:23.
height of jumps and money. We have all the top riders and a lot of top | :10:23. | :10:27.
English riders and some of them come up year on year here. So we are | :10:27. | :10:32.
grateful that they make the effort to come north. It seems to have | :10:32. | :10:41.
drawn a pig crowd. How popular -- big crowd, how popular is it? | :10:41. | :10:45.
people watch showjumping that wouldn't watch it any other time. | :10:45. | :10:55.
:10:55. | :10:55. | ||
Jemma is fastest again and takes home 2,600, the top prize. Jemma, | :10:56. | :11:01.
wow! How much did you enjoy that? was great, I have not had the | :11:02. | :11:06.
greatest of shows so far. So I'm glad to win and the horse jumped | :11:06. | :11:13.
super. I think you knocked the socks off the blokes? Well it paid off. | :11:13. | :11:19.
Was ate tough course? The ground was slippy, so it was, you had to be | :11:19. | :11:25.
cautious on the turns. But it was a good class. You go home a bit | :11:25. | :11:30.
richer? Yes, we cub doubled our money, he has earned his keep for a | :11:31. | :11:40.
:11:41. | :11:51. | ||
couple of days. Well done you two. the Highland Show and this tent is | :11:51. | :11:58.
home to the poultry section. Feeling plucky? There is 120 poultry classes | :11:58. | :12:03.
and about 25 classes for the produce, the eggs. Do you have a | :12:03. | :12:12.
favourite? Well the more attractive one is is like the white-crested | :12:12. | :12:19.
Polish. This year the Scottish soebgs of Scottish Association of | :12:19. | :12:26.
Young Farmers is celebrating it fifth anniversary. - fifth | :12:26. | :12:35.
anniversary. The most keenly anticipated competition is the | :12:35. | :12:45.
:12:45. | :12:55. | ||
This is one of the purest tests of strength. For the young farmers | :12:55. | :13:03.
here, it is very serious. Today we are competing for the national | :13:03. | :13:10.
finals of the tug-of-war. We came through the regional finals. We're | :13:10. | :13:15.
here for the male and female national final. How many teams are | :13:15. | :13:23.
competing? 10 male and 10 female teams. Howl much competition is | :13:24. | :13:32.
there? It is one of the spectacles of the show. There is a lot of | :13:32. | :13:36.
training that goes into it. We have trained Paul Winter for it. This is | :13:36. | :13:44.
the pinnacle of it. -- all winter. The rules are pretty strict. Each | :13:45. | :13:51.
team has pulling members. The boat must be no more than 12.5 | :13:51. | :13:58.
centimetres in circumference. The soles of your shoes must be flat. | :13:59. | :14:04.
The women's teams have battled through the heats. These are the | :14:04. | :14:14.
two teams in the final, at Ayr against Kinross. They have started | :14:14. | :14:23.
as they take the first one. Look at the concentration! Real technique | :14:23. | :14:32.
in the West had against East final. Will they hold it? -- in the West | :14:32. | :14:38.
against East final. You can see the pain on the faces. Is that enough? | :14:38. | :14:48.
:14:48. | :14:49. | ||
They have fallen with centimetres to go. It is! I think that says it | :14:49. | :14:58.
When it comes to beef cattle, the most prestigious competition is the | :14:58. | :15:03.
Beef interbreed. The winning beef cattle from all the breed societies | :15:03. | :15:06.
go head to head to find the supreme show champion. So, we thought we | :15:06. | :15:16.
:15:16. | :15:19. | ||
would see if we can second guess The judge. These cattle are some of | :15:19. | :15:28.
the best in the country and includes some iconic breeds. The | :15:28. | :15:38.
delight for Highlander is one. know deep down who will win. I get | :15:38. | :15:42.
there you are coming from. I have squeezed all the knowledge from the | :15:42. | :15:52.
:15:52. | :16:03. | ||
farmers and I will go for the Angus Whatever the breed, the judge has a | :16:03. | :16:10.
very difficult task. What is he looking for? It is very difficult. | :16:10. | :16:14.
Buchan up compared the breeds. You have to be looking for an | :16:14. | :16:19.
exceptional animal within the breeds. -- you cannot compare the | :16:19. | :16:27.
breeds. Each country has different characteristics. You are looking at | :16:27. | :16:34.
something that stands out. You have a big huge Aberdeen Angus. It | :16:34. | :16:40.
defies the mind you can come to a decision on that. It is like Miss | :16:40. | :16:44.
World. It is the same thing. That is what you really think is the | :16:44. | :16:50.
outstanding animal in the breed. Any chance you could give me a nod | :16:50. | :16:56.
or a wink when you are in there? The odds should be less than 12-1. | :16:56. | :17:02.
I am choosing the Angus bull. going for the Highlanders. Thank | :17:02. | :17:08.
you for the pair of you. I have learned a lot just listening to you. | :17:08. | :17:18.
:17:18. | :17:27. | ||
If we can help in any way... Do not Thank you. Very nice, thanks.The | :17:27. | :17:34.
judge has made his decision - a correct decision in my book. I lose | :17:34. | :17:43.
again. Well done. A fantastic weather. A lifetime achievement. -- | :17:43. | :17:53.
:17:53. | :17:55. | ||
a fantastic winner. You are a happy man and so am I. These are some of | :17:55. | :18:02.
my favourite animals - donkeys. They're great. There really | :18:02. | :18:07.
intelligent. The donkeys a more intelligent than the horses. They | :18:07. | :18:11.
are not the stubborn as people think they are. The more you do | :18:11. | :18:16.
with them the more you get out of them. The crowds love to see them | :18:16. | :18:22.
because you do not get to see them other than on the beach. On the | :18:22. | :18:29.
last series, we took a journey into woodland to living. He has been | :18:29. | :18:33.
looking into a new edition to the countryside area to find out how we | :18:33. | :18:38.
can bring nature into our own backyards. The countryside there is | :18:38. | :18:41.
my favourite part of the show. There are many traditional crafts | :18:42. | :18:46.
going on all weekend. I'm here to see a brand new hotel being built | :18:47. | :18:56.
:18:57. | :18:58. | ||
This is not your average hotel. It has been specially built to house | :18:58. | :19:03.
some of my favourite creatures - bugs. Let's find out some more. | :19:03. | :19:11.
What do we have here? I am making up a bug hotel. This is one I made | :19:11. | :19:19.
earlier. What are they made out of? Old pieces of plywood I had in the | :19:19. | :19:27.
garage. That is fantastic. You have a lot going on. Lots of tubes, Moss, | :19:27. | :19:34.
a leaf litter and pine cones. Are the special habitats for birds? | :19:34. | :19:40.
Most birds will sit in any of them. A leaf cutter would go in here. | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:51. | ||
Moss for the woodlice. Centipedes in the bark. Ladybirds are | :19:51. | :19:57.
fantastic for the garden. It makes a great home. I can see it being | :19:57. | :20:03.
used as a restaurant for predators - like a snack bar. That is the | :20:03. | :20:10.
general idea. It is a bug hotel for all sorts. It is a very organic and | :20:10. | :20:14.
textual sort of thing. I guess you could replace the bamboo with | :20:14. | :20:24.
straws, for example. Anything like that which has a tube. It is snug | :20:24. | :20:33.
as a bug in a rug. Yes, indeed.But hotels are a great idea. The best | :20:33. | :20:43.
:20:43. | :20:48. | ||
thing is, they're easy to make - educational and fun for all the | :20:48. | :20:51.
family. As Dougie mentioned earlier, this is the 75th anniversary of the | :20:51. | :20:53.
Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs. Chief executive | :20:53. | :20:56.
Penny Montgomery is organising the full year of activities and | :20:56. | :21:00.
fundraising. The young farmers are famed for staging outlandish events | :21:00. | :21:06.
at the Highland Show. The ship is a special year and there is more of a | :21:06. | :21:13.
focus on fund-raising. -- this year. We had 300 members participating in | :21:13. | :21:18.
a flash mob, which went to demonstrate different activities | :21:18. | :21:26.
Young Farmers' participate in. Over the next year, we want 100,000 for | :21:26. | :21:32.
the trust fund. We have the triathlon taking place with the RBS. | :21:32. | :21:41.
We aim to achieve 1000 miles. We are also plunging various | :21:41. | :21:51.
:21:51. | :21:51. | ||
agricultural celebrities. Each celebrity has had a 1,000 on his | :21:51. | :21:58.
head. What else to have planned for the year? The flash mob has been | :21:58. | :22:02.
excellent. We are putting on a concert in Glasgow. This is quite a | :22:02. | :22:09.
big deal to remember. We should have between 304 hundred past | :22:09. | :22:19.
:22:19. | :22:26. | ||
members taking part on the stage. - - 300and 400members. I am really | :22:26. | :22:31.
looking forward to that concert in November. The young farmers do not | :22:31. | :22:41.
do things by half. This is the premier event in the Scottish | :22:41. | :22:47.
countryside Callender but an important event for the show | :22:47. | :22:53.
manager. I have had a great three days. We have had good crowds. | :22:53. | :22:58.
Everyone has made me feel very welcome. Last year we had some | :22:58. | :23:02.
extreme weather at the show which caused some major problems. Has | :23:02. | :23:08.
that been addressed this year? have had really good weather. The | :23:08. | :23:13.
set-up was dry. The problem last year was mainly with the car parks. | :23:13. | :23:19.
The guys on site have been working hard with ground stabilisation work, | :23:19. | :23:24.
reinforcing all the roads in the park. We have some contingency car | :23:24. | :23:30.
parking in the locality. Today the weather was perfect. Last year, | :23:30. | :23:34.
perhaps, because of the extreme weather, the numbers were down. | :23:34. | :23:39.
Have they recovered? We have had three really good days. We are | :23:39. | :23:44.
optimistic we will beat last year's total quite comfortably. As a show | :23:44. | :23:51.
manager, what are the major challenges? We always need to keep | :23:51. | :23:56.
moving. We try to attract the top livestock in the country to exhibit. | :23:56. | :24:00.
We do good business to business, particularly in the agricultural | :24:00. | :24:05.
world. We need a good trading environment and the bike level of | :24:05. | :24:09.
customers for them. We need to attract people who are not so | :24:09. | :24:13.
familiar with the countryside and live in the town. You have always | :24:13. | :24:20.
got to keep moving and find new and innovative things for the customer. | :24:20. | :24:28.
It seems like a good start so far by you. Thank you very much. Once | :24:28. | :24:33.
the showing is done for the day, this is where many a young farmer | :24:33. | :24:40.
can be found - the infamous beer tent. It can get really busy. We | :24:40. | :24:48.
could do 7000 to aid 1000 pints on a hot weekend. It depends on the | :24:48. | :24:57.
NPower. How wild to the Young Farmers get? -- it depends on the | :24:57. | :25:04.
weather. They are a good crowd.On that note, it brings us to the end | :25:04. | :25:13.
of our time. Highlights? Mine was tasting some of the amazing street | :25:13. | :25:19.
food from the Highlands and Islands. For me, it was meeting Sarah. | :25:19. | :25:24.
has to be sheep-shearing for me. personal highlight for me as well. | :25:24. | :25:29. |
