Highlights - Day 10 Australian Open Tennis

One is an established star. One is an emerging talent. One is at the

top of the game... One is aspiring to get there. One is in familiar

territory... Andy Murray is safely through to the quarterfinals. One is

breaking new ground. What a match to make the quarterfinal of a Grand

Slam. One is a Grand Slam champion, one is dreaming of being one. Andy

Murray and Johanna Konta, one to watch. What an exciting day in

Melbourne, both British number ones action, Andy Murray sharing the

spotlight in the last eight with Johanna Konta, who has had two

impressive wins over Venus Williams and Ekaterina Makarova. But the

story on the other side was even more amazing. Shuai Zino, lost all

14 of her Grand Slam matches. The huge opportunity for wannabes to go

through to the semifinal. -- Shahzad. Angelique Kerber is through

to the semifinal, but would she face Konta or Zhang?

Konta is going to be as attacking as she can be out here. She has got a

few more weapons with the serve. That was a great response. Shows

ability to absorb the power and change direction of the ball.

Good move from Shahzad. Wished it deep enough. Put some pressure on

her opponent to come up with the past.

Bit more on the ground strokes, Konta, as she delivers that winner.

First break opportunity in this match.

She has been as high as 30 in the world, Zhang, that was in 2013.

Another solid return from Konta. Has become her favourite shop, direct

did straight down the middle of the court. It takes away time and angle

from your opponent at the other end. Another opportunity here. Second

break point. Too much pace again on the second

serve. Konta leads 2-1. A look at the river as it winds back

around Melbourne Park. Not a good start after just getting

the break. But that makes up for it. Second ace

of the match. A lot of work to change her emotions on the court,

Johanna Konta. Was known for not being as strong mentally, in the

past. First the Jewish woman here to get

to the quarterfinal since Jo Durie. -- British woman.

Well played Axel she is a great move around the court, Konta. Incredibly

fit. Great work ethic. Manoeuvres the ball around, gets very well set

for the overhead. Nice preparation. Jo Durie reached the quarterfinal

stage in 1983. So it has been a dry spell.

Konta, is playing quite well within herself, especially on the forehand

side. Keeping the pressure on Zhang. Well done. Good tactical move from

Konta. Makes the break, 3-1. The British number one got another

break. So here she is serving for the first set at 5-2.

Extra firepower on her serve. 176, indicating the confidence she is

feeling. Average serve is around 170.

Just too good. Watch the way Johanna Konta prepares for her ground

strokes. Get set early, bends her knees and get down to it. That is

the winning forehand. Just too tough.

She was trying to make something happen on the return. Try and keep

going after things, otherwise she just will be outplayed by Konta.

The ball toss getting away from her a little in the last two serves.

Skidded off the line. It certainly looked like it shop through a little

bit on Konta. Not cleanly hit by Zhang. Drew the error.

Good, solid return. Double break point opportunity for Zhang.

Good second serve. That is when you have got to say, too good to come up

with something like that. Quickest second serve, a lot of movement on

it. No hope for Zhang. Great control again. The direction.

Set point. She got some good depth on that

return, Zhang. Really fighting hard here, to stay in this opening set.

We have seen her fighting qualities throughout the tournament.

Third ace. Nice slider. Not as quick as the others, but great curve on

it. Set point again. Swinging away and no chance to get her racket on

it. She was just about ready to walk,

she thought she had made it. Rock-solid from Konta. Wasn't a bad

move, was it? It was a good move, it didn't faze her at all. Really used

her legs well. Stay balanced, eyes on the ball. Set point number three.

Only the second double fault of the match. It just proves it is tough to

serve sets out. Big opportunity here. Just over seven minutes in

this game. As good as the one she played

crosscourt. Playing some winners now. She is fighting her way back

into this opening set and is rewarded with a set point. She had

saved three set points in this game. Nerves certainly playing the part.

Zhang held serve so he is Konta, once again, serving for the set.

Close one. First point, always a big one when you are trying to get back

into a set. Also when you are serving for it. Love 15.

Konta will want a few serves here. Serving at 47%. As only lost three

points when she does get the first delivery in.

Good depth again. And now be extra pace. It was Konta who have the pace

in the opening stages of this set. But Zhang has picked it up a little.

15-30. Opens at the fourth set point for

Johanna Konta. Rank number 47 in the world.

How about that? Courageous shop to come up with. Just a little bit

short from Konta's point oh view. Allowing Zhang to get a good strike

on it. She took an extra step so she could get right behind the flight of

the ball. Deuce. Great play from Zhang and with the

intensity of the situation, she raised the volume. She has picked it

up, all right. Both with the noise factor and strike production. Break

point now. Was down two service breaks in this set. 5-2.

What a way to save it. That was just great, the look on her face before

that serve. You just had the feeling she was ready to produce something

good. What a moment to come out with her fourth ace.

Two good serves takes her to set point number five.

Zhang, just refusing to go away here. One of those balls must have

been awfully close to the line, if not on it. Brings up deuce number

three and it has been set point number five. What a battle.

Set point number six now. The last service came through in a couple of

double faults. This time, to get herself out of trouble, she came up

with an ace and some terrific serving.

Well served! On the sixth set point, Johanna Konta from Great Britain

wins the opening set in 48 minutes, 6-4. STUDIO: Konta and the British

fans breathe a sigh of relief as she takes the opening set. There were

three breaks of serve in the first four games of the second set. Here

is Zhang serving, 3-1 down. Long Way home now but Zhang. She

must hold serve here. She did a super job to get back into it. It

took Konta six set points to win the first set.

Great angle on the serve. Anticipated the return down the line

from Konta. But it back in behind her.

Right on the line, that last return. It was too good. 30-15.

All over that second serve, Konta. Has done that so well throughout

this match. Has really returned well. Height of the bounce,

punishing it. 30-30, looking for the same type of start in this set as

she had in the opening set. The execution was spot on. It had to

be. Buried deep in the court, aware of where her opponent was. Drop

shot. Perfectly played. Break point. Two service breaks in this second

set. Went to put too much. Johanna Konta

rakes this second set and this much wide open. STUDIO: Konta, very much

in control. And here for the third time has match point to claim her

place in British tennis history. A bit of luck, but the victory was no

fluke. Well thought out and well deserved. This may have been billed

as the battle of the underdogs. Konta is through but Zhang provided

one of the most memorable stories of these championships. The British

number one's journey through the tournament has made a big names take

note. My new star and a new threat to the hierarchy of the game has

emerged. Johanna Konta becomes the first British player through to a

Grand Slam semifinal in 32 years. This is what she had to say after

the match. Many congratulations, you lost first

round in qualifying, this year you are a Grand Slam semifinalist, how

have you transformed your game? Well, to be honest I was really just

taking it a match at a time when I was here, even more simply, a point

at the time. She didn't make it easy, every time I got a little

ahead, she was constantly there. Unfortunately I did win it on the

let cord. I am not that proud of that, but I am happy I was able to

fight every single point. First Grand Slam quarterfinal today, how

did you manage the nerves out here? I really enjoyed it, I really played

well in front of you guys. You helped me play well. In terms of the

occasion of the match, I did not put anything on it. I just wanted to

make sure I came out here and played the best I could and gave you guys

hopefully good entertainment. I do not know how much you saw of the

first semifinal, but Angelique Kerber is your opponent tomorrow.

You have never played her before. It will be my first match against her.

She is top ten and an incredibly decorated and successful competitor

and player. I am really just going to go out there and bring to the

court what I can and try my best and hopefully give the crowd a great

match and we will see how it goes. Johanna, well done today. Keep doing

it for the Brits, see you tomorrow. SUE BARKER: This new-found

confidence has found the British fans cheering and they will be

hoping for more tomorrow as she takes on the seventh seed Angelique

Kerber. We well have highlights of that tomorrow at two o'clock. We

will also have Novak Djokovic against Roger Federer. They have

played 44 times and it is 22 matches for each one.

Andy Murray made his way onto the Rod labour arena. It has been an

emotional few days for him who consider drawing from the

championships because his father-in-law's condition could have

deteriorated. But his journey in this tournament continued. Today he

was up against a player he has a good record against, 12-6. He

started well in this one with a break of serve, serving for the

first set at 5-3. Mark Woodforde is one of the commentators.

Another flyer of the Murray backhand. I like the fact that the

second serve gets him asking a lot of himself. He was aggressive with

the return. The first ace. Not unusual, maybe,

but Ferrer has not sent down an ace. What running from both players. Both

are certainly taking some deep breaths. Not by much. It was just

down to the middle of the court. Just one volley put Ferrer back in

the frame, more up the court than pushing towards the line. It brought

Ferrer back into the picture. Now we will see the second serve. It

was an exhausting last point. He goes upstairs again. No, he is

thinking about it. He is definitely challenging. He has got his hand up.

He is really frustrated. He wants to challenge. Break that point.

And it is not just straight down the T either, it curves around.

So, set the point again for Andy Murray.

And he does get the opening set. 45 minutes on court. He takes it 6-3.

SUE BARKER: Murray battled through to take the first. The second set

was also hard-fought. He had saved the second set at 5-4. So we go into

the tie-break. To give you an idea of how Ferrer is

dominating the matches, he has been in the situation where he has not

had to play the tie-break in the tournament so far.

And it is just utter confusion on that court for Ferrer. He has been

beaten enough times with a slider down the T. He was heading in that

general direction. Again he set up the point

beautifully. He took a little bit of pace up the line. Ferrer was going

forward and scrambling. Again it is just the slight hesitation. Which

direction to hit that high backhand volley. The reaction afterwards did

not help at all. He has been talking himself into not venturing up there.

And he got there! The longest rally of the match. An incredible

performance from both players. Andy Murray should have got that one

over. It was a fantastic overhead from Ferrer in the end. The value of

the extended rally. They are covering some ground today.

Andy Murray was anticipating it into that corner. It is a mini break. Two

of the biggest point is happening right here for Andy Murray. Winning

them cleanly. If he drops one point, it could be set over for Ferrer.

This is what he was looking forward to, getting into an arm wrestle with

Andy Murray. David Ferrer has a lot of trust in his physical well-being.

Two very solid points for Murray. Ferrer still has the mini break.

He has missed it. That is unbelievable from both players. Now

we have had the longest rally. We are just waiting for someone to

blame. It was rock solid all the way through apart from that last shot.

Full-blooded drives, not always down the centre corridor either.

Well, he had to make absolutely sure of that volley, Andy Murray, and he

did. The previous point was almost a very similar point that he tried to

set up, but he did not take the volley, he elected to see if it was

going to go long. He ended up losing, so it is a nice response

from Andy Murray. To be able to put another volley away. Back on serve

in the tie-break. He almost got caught. If you are

Andy Murray, that could be worth a number of points in your favour. We

have got to assume that Ferrer is good at pushing the reset button.

He went for it. Ferrer again with set points. It began with the

return. Trust me, that is not an easy volley at that stage. The

scoreline, and he is not that comfortable with that.

He has missed it! He takes the second set 7-6. SUE BARKER: That is

what Ferrer is famous for, fighting hard and getting under Andy Murray's

skin once again. In the third set Murray is leading 2-1.

Nicely done. A beautiful angle. Did not need the pace of this one. That

was a savvy backhand from Ferrer. He had to bend down really low to it

and it saps the leg strength. A big opportunity now for Murray.

Just the second little fault in the match for Ferrer.

He has got there. It is a big advantage now for Murray in this

third set. SUE BARKER: At that point play was suspended and the roof was

closed, much to Ferrer's discussed. He wanted to continue for as long as

possible with out it, knowing how good Murray is indoors. But

following a storm it was closed and he did enjoy the good conditions. He

won the set 6-2. We are into the fourth set.

Never a good sign for Ferrer to make an error that quickly.

Murray almost making it crosscourt. Keeping it down the line would have

been the best option. That is a forceful attacking return.

He is inside the baseline looking very ominous, Murray. It just helps

moving forward into the direction where you want to send the return.

That is a handy serve from Ferrer at 0- 15.

It is rare today from Ferrer, but it is a nice change up.

That extra ball set up the point beautifully. It is another break

point. I am not sure what happened. He very rarely misses overheads. He

has been spot on all day today. We will replay the point. It was

overruled. That was in the furthest corner away from her, but it was a

good call. It will have to be replayed. Murray should be

congratulating her. She is the one who overruled, the linesman was the

one who made the outer call. He is a bit frustrated as he set up the

points so well. Another break of serve. Murray is

looking good now. SUE BARKER: Murray breaks and here he is at match point

to take his place in a grand slam semifinal once again.

And that will do it! For the sixth time in a row Andy Murray has seen

of the David Ferrer challenge. For the sixth time he is through to the

semifinals of the Australian open. That is why he is the number two

seed, the number two player in the world. You would not have expected

anything but a titanic tussle with David Ferrer who is warmly

applauded. Andy, you guys were locked into battle, and set apiece

and you had broken 3-1 in the third set and then the roof closed. How

did that change the match from your perspective? You'll I found it a bit

easier to return. It was windy at the beginning of the match and

returning was tricky. He was extremely accurate with his forehand

and that helped me a little bit on the return, but it was good for us

to have a break because we played some brutal rallies at the beginning

of that third set and we came back a bit more refreshed.

It has been a good tournament for Great Britain. History was made and

you made the semifinal today and your brother is in the doubles

semifinals and that has never been done in the open era, two brothers

in semifinals. Then Johanna Konta also went to the semifinals. You

have been doing a lot of work for Great Britain. You have great

company, what do you think of that? Johanna Konta is unbelievable and

she has had some great wins here and has beaten some great players. She

had an opportunity today and she was not favourite and she played great

and it is very exciting to have a British woman in the last stages of

a slam, it has not happened for a long time. Yes, I am very proud for

my brother because he made the final of Wimbledon and the US open and now

he is here. He has been very consistent in the last three

tournaments and hopefully he can get over the line in this one. Great

Raonic. He has been tipped for the top for so long and he is playing
