are so many qualities about Nicol, but one of those is that she is

:00:00.3:59:59

incredibly quick and so fit. The full gamut of Williams coming

:00:00.:00:29.

out now. -- the full gamut of brilliance. Absolutely, and always

:00:30.:00:37.

so calm. She just flows around, even when under pressure. She does not

:00:38.:00:43.

get het up about anything. She just says every point as it comes. --

:00:44.:00:48.

plays every point. Exquisite. At she is giving the

:00:49.:01:11.

world number two player a lesson. There is the attacking game that was

:01:12.:01:16.

missing in the first game. Now, every opportunity she is getting,

:01:17.:01:17.

she is going for a winning shot. played well all week, but that was

:01:18.:02:03.

probably the best game that she'd played in this tournament.

:02:04.:02:09.

We can pick up a little of what's being said here.

:02:10.:02:22.

((Inaudible) The Malaysian supporters are make soing much noise

:02:23.:02:27.

it's difficult to pick it up. Lizzie just accentuating what's been going

:02:28.:02:31.

on really. I think just slightly hearing there, saying to Nicol, keep

:02:32.:02:35.

the pressure on, don't let up now. Keep the pressure on. Don't take

:02:36.:02:41.

your foot off the pedal and just keep going as you have done in the

:02:42.:02:50.

second game. For Laura? The tactics seemed right in the first game. But

:02:51.:02:53.

the way that Nicol David was playing in the second game, no-one on earth

:02:54.:02:58.

could live with her. It's hard to find your feet when you're in the

:02:59.:03:01.

midst of that and it's coming as you thick and fast. It's hard to think

:03:02.:03:05.

that quickly. The way she played in the first was, again, we say the

:03:06.:03:10.

same thing, but she's got to get Nicol off the T. She's so dam Nantes

:03:11.:03:17.

from that position -- dominant from that position. You put her at the

:03:18.:03:21.

front of the court when it isn't the right time and you'll be punished.

:03:22.:03:25.

Again, she's just so dangerous from there. For me, Laura has to really

:03:26.:03:32.

focus on the depth of the ball and looking for the opportunity when

:03:33.:03:39.

she's got Nick in the back -- nicol in the back corners. She has to look

:03:40.:03:43.

for the opportunities that aren't so obvious in order to start mixing the

:03:44.:03:53.

game up. In all of women's sport no-one has been as dominant as Nicol

:03:54.:03:55.

David. Eight successive years no-one has been as dominant as Nicol

:03:56.:03:58.

David. Eight successive now as the number one player in the world.

:03:59.:04:03.

Well, it's quite remarkable, when you hear that. She is just

:04:04.:04:07.

incredible. The losses that she's had, she's the kind of player that

:04:08.:04:11.

goes away, sits down with her coach, decides why it went wrong and then

:04:12.:04:16.

she works really hard again to put it right, even though she is the

:04:17.:04:20.

world number one. That's what's special about Nicol. She feels that

:04:21.:04:25.

no matter how good she gets, there's room for improvement. Big roar as

:04:26.:04:38.

Laura Massaro came on court. You do wonder, even if she plays at her

:04:39.:04:44.

very best what she can do to upset this phenomenon that is Nicol David.

:04:45.:04:53.

It is a privilege to be oar and watch her play. -- to be here and

:04:54.:04:57.

watch her play. That's good, that's just the start

:04:58.:05:33.

she wanted. Good attacking squash from Laura.

:05:34.:05:52.

Perfect length. That's what Laura needs to be doing.

:05:53.:06:17.

A positive approach to the start of game number three from Massaro.

:06:18.:07:12.

Incredible defence. Credit to Massaro there. She kept on firing.

:07:13.:07:18.

Absolutely. That's exactly what she's got to do.

:07:19.:07:34.

The other thing about David is she's only 5 '6", but her stretch is a

:07:35.:07:44.

huge stride, she covers the court. She's a great athlete.

:07:45.:08:35.

Again, hugging that side wall. Very difficult for Massaro to get

:08:36.:08:40.

anything out of it. Stroke to David and a little contact

:08:41.:08:59.

there on the face of Laura Massaro. She was asked if she's OK.

:09:00.:09:24.

Involuntary contact. I don't think it was too hard, but

:09:25.:09:30.

definite contact there. David getting the stroke meanwhile.

:09:31.:09:37.

It's always harsh getting a stroke, but when you get caught at the same

:09:38.:09:41.

time, it's not very nice. An opportunity for a little bit more

:09:42.:10:00.

advice. I want to review that decision. She's going to review the

:10:01.:10:06.

decision. A stroke was given to David.

:10:07.:10:12.

APPLAUSE That's some advice that she got from

:10:13.:10:21.

the coach. It's taken a little while to get

:10:22.:10:59.

this under way. Yes, you can see Massaro going to

:11:00.:11:04.

the side, Nicol going backwards. I'm not sure how it can be anything

:11:05.:11:20.

but a stroke. That's for the fourth referee to decide.

:11:21.:11:31.

Showing what a good sportswoman she is, even though she was getting the

:11:32.:11:38.

stroke, she came straight across, did Nicol David, to make sure Laura

:11:39.:11:40.

Massaro was OK. I can't see any way this is going to

:11:41.:11:52.

be changed. No more reviews in this game for

:11:53.:12:08.

Laura Massaro. The lead stretches to two for Nicol David.

:12:09.:13:12.

Oh, yes Great shot. Lovely deception. Looked like she was going

:13:13.:13:18.

to go down the wall with it. Massaro totally wrong footed and the

:13:19.:13:25.

lead stretching to three. Again, immaculate length from Nicol

:13:26.:14:05.

David. That's a bad miss. I just think now

:14:06.:14:29.

the writing's on the wall for Laura Massaro. Really not able to get

:14:30.:14:33.

herself into this match at all now. Listen to the roar for Laura

:14:34.:14:46.

Massaro, her best shot of this particular game. That's what she

:14:47.:14:49.

needs to do. That's the shot she needs to look for.

:14:50.:14:56.

And again. You can probably hear her. Letting Nicol David know she's

:14:57.:15:03.

very much in this match. Too quick. She got it with relative

:15:04.:15:34.

ease. She's looking more and more comfortable now.

:15:35.:16:55.

She is saying the ball was down. But Nicol is adamant that it was up.

:16:56.:17:14.

It was up. Was not even close to being down. I think more desperation

:17:15.:17:27.

than the ball actually being down. Her squash playing it safe thing of

:17:28.:18:25.

absolute duty. -- her squash playing is a thing of absolute beauty.

:18:26.:18:30.

Incredible played by Nicol. That is what she is all about. Just great

:18:31.:18:32.

squash. She has got it. She is the champion

:18:33.:18:51.

again. And right now, she is the champion of champions. Her

:18:52.:18:59.

illustrious career just got that little bit better. What a phenomenon

:19:00.:19:17.

she is. She is remarkable. Not only is she a great player, but she is a

:19:18.:19:21.

bubbly the most wonderful ambassador for ace ward anyone could have. --

:19:22.:19:26.

the most wonderful ambassador for ace port. Great scenes.

:19:27.:19:35.

And you can't imagine how big she is back home in Malaysia. I guess in

:19:36.:19:44.

the UK, you would think David, and then you might be getting close to

:19:45.:19:49.

how big she is in her own country -- David Beckham, and yet how humble

:19:50.:19:54.

she is. When you talk to her and meet her, if you did not know she

:19:55.:19:58.

was as good at what she does as she is, she is just lovely. She is so

:19:59.:20:05.

lovely to speak to and talk to. And you are right, in Malaysia, she is

:20:06.:20:08.

like a rock star. She's incredibly famous. And after all

:20:09.:20:14.

like a rock star. She's incredibly famous. And after she has achieved,

:20:15.:20:19.

seven world titles, five British opens, she is over the moon.

:20:20.:20:28.

Defended her title. And Malaysian royalty are beaming. Massaro will

:20:29.:20:44.

feel disconsolate. She has not got too much to feel sorry for those of

:20:45.:20:48.

about, because it was the wrong opponent on the wrong day. She did

:20:49.:20:55.

nothing else wrong. Laura, a silver medal. How do you

:20:56.:21:00.

reflect on that performance? Disappointment. You go into these

:21:01.:21:05.

gold medal matches obviously knowing that the worst case is a silver, but

:21:06.:21:10.

you want to go for the gold. Nicol is a champion. She has been world

:21:11.:21:18.

number one for seven years. I feel like I have confidence when I play

:21:19.:21:22.

her, but when she brings out a game like that, it is very difficult to

:21:23.:21:27.

break down. I did not have enough to break her down on the volley. She

:21:28.:21:31.

was in front of me the entire time. The first game was very tight.

:21:32.:21:35.

Perhaps that was a crucial moment that might have gone differently.

:21:36.:21:40.

Absolutely. You can't give Leeds away like that.

:21:41.:21:43.

To their credit, she made me do a lot of work behind her, and that

:21:44.:21:54.

continued in the second game. It is difficult to just think about

:21:55.:21:58.

defending from behind and waiting for your opportunity when she is so

:21:59.:22:02.

quick. So you do something a bit rash. That is what she brings out in

:22:03.:22:08.

all her opponents. To add insult to injury, you got a racket in the face

:22:09.:22:13.

at one point. It just bruised the top of my teeth. It was more shock

:22:14.:22:18.

than anything. It is a noncontact sport, so when I get hit, I panicked

:22:19.:22:22.

a bit. It is fine, just a bit of bruising to the gums. Well done,

:22:23.:22:29.

silver medal. Onto the doubles. Hope early I can go one better in the

:22:30.:22:34.

doubles. HAZEL IRVINE: good afternoon. Laura

:22:35.:22:38.

beat Nicol David at the British Open in May, but could not do it today.

:22:39.:22:45.

As you have heard from the commentary team, she is a phenomenal

:22:46.:22:48.

athlete, Nicol David. The first athlete to defend a Commonwealth

:22:49.:22:52.

title. After tough times in Malaysia, it is a heartening moment

:22:53.:22:55.

for that nation. Well, hello to you. Jason has gone.

:22:56.:23:00.

I am in the chapter the next few hours. Lovely to be with you on

:23:01.:23:07.

another wonderful day in Glasgow. We start with a new word, meaning

:23:08.:23:14.

extremely busy. That has been the situation at all the venues around

:23:15.:23:18.

Glasgow. There was a record number of people at the rugby sevens in

:23:19.:23:24.

Hampden Park last night, when 40,000 people were belting out The

:23:25.:23:28.

Proclaimers' 500 miles and doing a Glaswegian wave, and offering up one

:23:29.:23:34.

support to all of the athletes yesterday and this morning. It

:23:35.:23:38.

really is the won in this part of the world, -- hoachim, in the best

:23:39.:23:44.

sense. And it will be very busy. Across the Clyde in the Hydro this

:23:45.:23:48.

afternoon, it is this art of the artistic gymnastics. And there it an

:23:49.:23:59.

old enemies clash bring. Team GB's men stepped onto the Olympic podium

:24:00.:24:03.

in London. Now team-mates and friends square up against each other

:24:04.:24:05.

in what could be one of the highlights of these games. For

:24:06.:24:10.

squash players, these games are there Olympic. This is the pinnacle

:24:11.:24:14.

of their sport and it is an all England contest in the men's singles

:24:15.:24:19.

for gold. Just as it was in Delhi. Malaysia won five out of six

:24:20.:24:22.

badminton gold in Delhi last time, but can England stop their march in

:24:23.:24:28.

the badminton final? We will head to the Emirates Arena to find out. And

:24:29.:24:38.

on BBC Three, women's hockey. Australia 3-0 up on England right

:24:39.:24:42.

now. Both sides have been unbeaten so far. England had yet to concede a

:24:43.:24:51.

goal until today. Something has got to give, and it is giving in that

:24:52.:24:55.

match so far. And there is more team action on the go. That is in the

:24:56.:25:02.

table tennis, the men's event, England against Singapore. And every

:25:03.:25:07.

moment of every sport is on BBC One, BBC Three or the BBC Sport

:25:08.:25:11.

website. You can also catch up with all of the sport on the iPlayer.

:25:12.:25:18.

We will be going to the start of the artistic gymnastics around five

:25:19.:25:23.

o'clock. We will share the opening exchanges in the company of a woman

:25:24.:25:28.

who is, in essence, the trailblazer for this sport for Team GB

:25:29.:25:33.

throughout the whole of the UK, Beth Tweddle.

:25:34.:25:46.

For me, gymnastics, from the word go, was the closest I was going to

:25:47.:25:55.

get to flying. I was very shy at school, but as soon as I stepped out

:25:56.:26:00.

onto the gymnastics floor, that shyness disappeared and I suddenly

:26:01.:26:09.

came into my own. As a kid, I was a nightmare. I had too much energy. I

:26:10.:26:14.

always wanted to be moving. I did not want to be still and watch TV. I

:26:15.:26:19.

think my mum thought, what are we going to do? We need to channel this

:26:20.:26:25.

energy. I would not say I was naturally talented. I was just

:26:26.:26:32.

willing to work and I loved a challenge. If someone said to me,

:26:33.:26:35.

you will never do that, it was a case of, I will show you I can. For

:26:36.:26:47.

the first year, I just did it for fun and went a couple of times a

:26:48.:26:52.

week. Then the coaches said, we like what we see. We would love her to go

:26:53.:26:56.

through to the elite side of the gym. That was then it became serious

:26:57.:27:01.

and I started doing it five days a week, 20 hours a week. If school was

:27:02.:27:06.

not in the way, I would have been their 24/7, to be honest for top do

:27:07.:27:13.

not miss the chalk. However much you had a shower, it was still in your

:27:14.:27:19.

hands. I was never a kid that dreamt of becoming this big gymnast that

:27:20.:27:24.

would achieve amazing results. I just kept coming through the doors

:27:25.:27:28.

because I kept loving the challenge. Then the result is kept getting

:27:29.:27:29.

better and better. I did the Europeans in April, and

:27:30.:27:45.

then there was the Commonwealth Games throughout the summer of 2002.

:27:46.:27:50.

Obviously, all eyes had been on this. It was in Manchester. It was

:27:51.:27:55.

the closest I would ever get to competing in my hometown. It was a

:27:56.:28:03.

special time. As soon as you walk towards the apparatus and started to

:28:04.:28:06.

go up the steps, the war was unbelievable. -- the raw. We were

:28:07.:28:12.

not used to being high profile. You were not used to people knowing who

:28:13.:28:18.

you were. After the qualification, we walked outside the stadium and

:28:19.:28:21.

there were people screaming your name, asking for autographs. It was

:28:22.:28:27.

a surreal moment. And obviously, that whole competition could not

:28:28.:28:32.

have gone any better for me. The European bronze medallist, Beth

:28:33.:28:35.

Tweddle of England. I remember doing the bare final and

:28:36.:28:53.

as soon as I landed, I had the biggest smile on my face. To come

:28:54.:29:02.

here with two silver medals and a gold medal, I was only 17 and I did

:29:03.:29:07.

not realise how much of an impact that would have. People always ask

:29:08.:29:14.

me to pick one moment from my career that I treasure, and you can't. For

:29:15.:29:21.

me, there are three moments. One was obviously London, because it took me

:29:22.:29:26.

20 years and it was the last moment of my career. It has been a long

:29:27.:29:31.

wait for an Olympic medal. The other was winning the first title in 2006.

:29:32.:29:36.

The third one is the Commonwealth Games. It was a special moment. She

:29:37.:29:41.

has produced many special moments for Great Britain and England. She

:29:42.:29:47.

is a multiple world champion, Olympic medallist and Commonwealth

:29:48.:29:50.

Games champion. So many of following in her footsteps in this sport. We

:29:51.:29:55.

will see her in the studio around five o'clock. Gymnastics has not

:29:56.:29:59.

featured in either of Scotland's previous two Commonwealth Games, so

:30:00.:30:06.

this is a first for the nation. I look forward to seeing the gymnasts

:30:07.:30:10.

later. Going for it at Scotstoun right now in the men's team event in

:30:11.:30:13.

the table tennis, we have England against Singapore. This is based on

:30:14.:30:19.

five matches. First nation to achieve three victories will win the

:30:20.:30:24.

gold medal. Singapore have become a real global force in this sport. Two

:30:25.:30:29.

Olympic medals proves that, and six of their last 11 medals at the

:30:30.:30:32.

Commonwealth Games have come in table tennis. They are not be taken

:30:33.:30:37.

lightly. The Mac is in the men's singles, -- the first match is the

:30:38.:30:46.

men's singles. Paul has achieved a two to one-game advantage. They are

:30:47.:30:48.

currently in Game four. Quite a clever manufacture there.

:30:49.:31:19.

-- move there. As hard as Zhan is trying he can't

:31:20.:31:22.

increase that league. Singaporean squeal from around the

:31:23.:31:42.

campus here at Scotstoun. So the match is tied then. We will

:31:43.:32:37.

be treated to a fifth game in this first and opening singles in this

:32:38.:32:43.

first men's team Gold Medal match. As always, it's going to be the

:32:44.:32:50.

first receive, first attack, which will decide this.

:32:51.:33:05.

He should play with topspin on the ball to stop Jian Zhan moving

:33:06.:33:14.

quickly. Then the backhand topspin and perhaps play the backhand

:33:15.:33:19.

topspin down the parallel to the centre in parts a lot of topspin on

:33:20.:33:25.

the backhand. That could release him to play on the Singapore asking

:33:26.:33:31.

forehand. For the medic then. They want to get some strapping on that

:33:32.:33:39.

powerful right quad. Or hamstring, I'm not sure. Something you're

:33:40.:33:48.

familiar with? I have not known Jian Zhan have any physical problems. On

:33:49.:33:54.

the World Tour, a couple of months ago, he was the runner up in the

:33:55.:33:58.

Philippines. I was with him, saw him play in Sydney Australia. He was

:33:59.:34:03.

runner up in the men's singles then. I saw no injury, the movement looks

:34:04.:34:10.

very good. Maybe that is more preventative than anything.

:34:11.:34:16.

Both men ready then. Terrific, aggressive start from

:34:17.:34:56.

Singapore there. Very good return. I know my opponent

:34:57.:35:21.

is going to be nervous. It's the fifth game, a crucial match. The

:35:22.:35:25.

serve might drift long. That applies to both players.

:35:26.:35:34.

He's just missed one or two forehands with his move around the

:35:35.:35:42.

backhand. Oh, full of intent and arm aloft for

:35:43.:35:52.

Zhan. What a start for him. There's a long way to go but if Paul

:35:53.:36:25.

Drinkhall loses the next point, he will be on his feet for a time now.

:36:26.:36:28.

-- time out. They've called the time out. He has

:36:29.:37:07.

no real choice, actually. He could definitely not leave it one more

:37:08.:37:10.

point. The gap would be just too great. OK, you do come back from

:37:11.:37:14.

these, but nine times out of ten, you don't. Now the job of Alan Cook

:37:15.:37:20.

is to settle his player down and to encourage Paul Drinkhall to attack

:37:21.:37:26.

very quickly on that first ball and give Jian Zhan the minimal time.

:37:27.:37:30.

Perhaps direct the first attack to the centre of the table to the right

:37:31.:37:34.

hip of his opponent and then maybe out to the forehand. As for Jian

:37:35.:37:39.

Zhan, keep that backhand working with the topspin.

:37:40.:38:47.

Backhand for effective. I'm perplexed why

:38:48.:38:55.

Drinkhall served there? I guess it's just important to vary the serve.

:38:56.:39:03.

Jian wise to it and getting round to it and taking the favoured backhand.

:39:04.:39:14.

Now Jian Zhan has got into a nice Litham to his play. -- rhythm to his

:39:15.:39:17.

play. Suddenly, then, a lot to think

:39:18.:39:27.

about. It's going from bad to worse. Singapore two points away from the

:39:28.:39:42.

match. You have to credit the nerves of

:39:43.:40:27.

Jian Zhan today. He's been under control, in the driving seat of this

:40:28.:40:31.

fifth game. Now it's brought up eight match points.

:40:32.:40:49.

Arms aloft from Jian as he converts their opening match into a W for

:40:50.:40:57.

Singapore. Yes advantage Singapore. They are on their way, though

:40:58.:41:01.

there's a long way to go in that contest. It's the best of five

:41:02.:41:04.

matches. Can you keep up to date with it, because it's live on the

:41:05.:41:07.

red button now. We will be keeping you up to date here on BBC One with

:41:08.:41:12.

it, as well. As you probably saw earlier on, there was a significant

:41:13.:41:15.

moment for the host nation Scotland earlier on in the pairs event at

:41:16.:41:23.

Kelvingrove. Paul Foster and Alex Marshall Gold Medallists. Alex

:41:24.:41:30.

claiming his third Commonwealth title and Paul his second. They are

:41:31.:41:33.

the dominant team in pairs bowls. They are the first two to hold the

:41:34.:41:38.

indoor and outdoor world titles concurrently. That is Scotland's

:41:39.:41:42.

12th Gold Medal of these Games. It beats a record golden haul from 2006

:41:43.:41:47.

in Melbourne. So for a record 12th time, the Flower of Scotland about

:41:48.:41:48.

to ring out in Glasgow. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:41:49.:43:25.

Everybody swaying down there. I don't think I've ever seen more

:43:26.:43:28.

people swaying to Flower of Scotland. They were doing it behind

:43:29.:43:34.

the camera as well. Great scenes there and record-breaking scenes

:43:35.:43:39.

created in the pairs bowls today. Doesn't Kelvingrove park look

:43:40.:43:42.

fantastic as well. We are heading soon back to Scotstoun show ground.

:43:43.:43:46.

There it is the men's squash final. We're looking forward to the number

:43:47.:43:51.

one and two in this contest, both Englishmen, but Peter Barker, a

:43:52.:43:54.

third Englishman has claimed the bronze there. I think he's probably

:43:55.:43:58.

cooled down after his efforts. He's with Sir Matt pin sent now.

:43:59.:44:06.

-- Sir Matt Pinsent now. We're at Scotstoun for the final of

:44:07.:44:10.

the men's singles squash. Peter Barker bronze medal from the singles

:44:11.:44:14.

40 minutes ago. What can we expect from this final? This is huge.

:44:15.:44:22.

Hopefully a very, very good match. They're long-time rivals. You can be

:44:23.:44:26.

assured that they're not going to give each other an inch. Nick is the

:44:27.:44:30.

favourite. I think he's won the last few meetings. Hopefully James can

:44:31.:44:36.

play with a free arm and play some of the shots that we know he can.

:44:37.:44:42.

Maybe cause an upset. I'm going to ask you an unfair question about

:44:43.:44:45.

whether they like each other. Because they've been quite public

:44:46.:44:49.

about the fact that there's genuine animosity here. It's difficult

:44:50.:44:52.

because they're team-mates of yours. I've given you some time to think

:44:53.:44:56.

about it now. They don't really like each other do No, I they? Appreciate

:44:57.:45:01.

that. They're both unbelievably professional. When they represent

:45:02.:45:07.

England, their performances speak for themselves. They're just chalk

:45:08.:45:14.

and cheese. Nick's a very outgoing person, likes to be amongst a lot of

:45:15.:45:21.

people. Whereas James is an ins lar person -- insular person, doesn't

:45:22.:45:24.

enjoy, certainly Nick's company, but would rather be on his There's an

:45:25.:45:29.

own. Anning toll squash which is getting in the -- getting -- there's

:45:30.:45:39.

an anning toll squash which is just part of the game. I'm known for it a

:45:40.:45:43.

little bit as well. Ultimately you're trying to get in front of

:45:44.:45:47.

your opponent. There's a lot of Jockying in the T, a few shoulders,

:45:48.:45:51.

elbows, using your racquet to create that space. That's just part of it.

:45:52.:45:59.

These guys will be professional. There wonts be any animosity on

:46:00.:46:03.

court, as such. Just what is usual, really. Is there an etiquette to the

:46:04.:46:09.

warm up. They're warm be up now. Is there a discipline to that? Or is

:46:10.:46:14.

that a chance to get one over your opponent there as well? Not

:46:15.:46:15.

necessarily. If you don't like your opponent, can

:46:16.:46:26.

you throw your ball up the front of the court, so might see a bit of

:46:27.:46:30.

that. You don't want your opponent getting in too much rhythm. Or they

:46:31.:46:34.

will start the match with that rhythm. You want to hit some rhythm

:46:35.:46:38.

yourself and then disrupt theirs a little bit. This venue is very warm

:46:39.:46:44.

inside, but deliberately so, explain why. Well, I think, for us older

:46:45.:46:50.

guys, that's good. The body stays warm and Supple. But the rallies

:46:51.:46:59.

have been fantastic. It's set a certain humidity and temperature for

:47:00.:47:03.

optimum play. I'm pleased to say often these big arenas don't quite

:47:04.:47:09.

get the balance right. The sweat on the court also, at a certain

:47:10.:47:13.

temperature will evaporate. If it's too cold, the court will become

:47:14.:47:24.

slippery. We have seen the effort from these guys. They are dripping

:47:25.:47:27.

after every game. It is quite humid anyway, but after the first few

:47:28.:47:33.

rallies, they will be ringing the sweat. We have to change our shirts

:47:34.:47:37.

after every game. Headbands, wristbands, everything. Finally,

:47:38.:47:43.

whatever happens in this match, an amazing performance from England in

:47:44.:47:46.

the men's singles, same as Delhi. They sweep at the podium. Thank you.

:47:47.:47:53.

We have worked very hard. The England squash team is an

:47:54.:47:58.

unbelievable team. We are proud to be part of that team. They put a lot

:47:59.:48:03.

of work into us, and hopefully we can repay the favour. Time for the

:48:04.:48:09.

biggest final that squash can offer, Matthew versus Willstrop.

:48:10.:48:16.

HAZEL IRVINE: this is a repeat of the final in Delhi four years ago.

:48:17.:48:26.

Top seed Nick Matthew, defending champion. And James Willstrop from

:48:27.:48:33.

Pontefract. Former world number-1 himself. As the guys have been

:48:34.:48:38.

saying, a bit of needle, but what I contest this should be. Let's enjoy

:48:39.:48:45.

it. These are the three biggest events

:48:46.:48:48.

in our games. All the players agree on that. This is the one they really

:48:49.:48:54.

want to win, but as you say, James Willstrop is so close to winning one

:48:55.:49:00.

of these majors. This is a great opportunity for him. He is obviously

:49:01.:49:03.

going to feel that. Nick Matthew, 34. James Willstrop, 30. You wonder

:49:04.:49:09.

how many more years either of these guys has at the top. Will they be

:49:10.:49:13.

here in four years' time, competing for that medal? There is Malcolm

:49:14.:49:22.

Willstrop, James' father and the man who coaches him. James was born in

:49:23.:49:33.

Norfolk, now lives in Leeds. Talking of great squash minds, Malcolm

:49:34.:49:36.

Willstrop probably has the greatest. Very savvy coach. Also knows how to

:49:37.:49:42.

motivate players. You often have a technical coach and a motivating

:49:43.:49:47.

guy, but to have these aspects in the same coach, very impressive. He

:49:48.:49:51.

has had great results with his players. This is a repeat of the

:49:52.:50:01.

final in Delhi four years ago. James Willstrop never got started then. It

:50:02.:50:06.

was over in three straight games. That's right, it was a 67 minute

:50:07.:50:11.

match. It took a long time for Nick to break James down. I think we will

:50:12.:50:15.

see that again. It is going to be a long match. There is not much to

:50:16.:50:20.

pick between these guys. They both volley unbelievably well. Maybe

:50:21.:50:23.

James has a slightly better touch on the volley. Nick Matthew's speed

:50:24.:50:32.

will tell in this game. He wants to get James Willstrop to the front,

:50:33.:50:36.

play with his footwork and his recovery. But it will take a long

:50:37.:50:44.

time to do that. Willstrop, doing what he did in the semifinal. He has

:50:45.:50:49.

come out on court, and then disappeared on the May for a toilet

:50:50.:50:55.

break. Another keyword is hydration. These guys drink a lot before they

:50:56.:51:00.

start. They are knowledgeable athletes, sensitive to their bodies.

:51:01.:51:03.

They also have a team of experts and nutritionists and psychologists and

:51:04.:51:08.

coaches and supporters around them that look after these players well.

:51:09.:51:13.

Hydration plays a massive part. You want your blood plasma to be at the

:51:14.:51:17.

right level so that when you go on court, your body is operating at

:51:18.:51:20.

maximum efficiency. Nick Matthew takes the support team

:51:21.:51:37.

to extremes. His wife is a psychologist. That would be an

:51:38.:51:42.

interesting dinner table conversation. So, as in the women's

:51:43.:51:55.

final MO the numbers one and two seeds have made it through to the

:51:56.:52:00.

final. Expect a long rallies, a war of attrition here. James Willstrop

:52:01.:52:02.

will begin. Oh, yes. Change of angles from Nick

:52:03.:53:29.

Matthew. Notice the recovery away from the ball. Nick Matthew almost

:53:30.:53:33.

accelerate away from each shot. Very elastic movement. James Willstrop is

:53:34.:53:36.

a bit smoother in his movement. A bit early in the match to go for

:53:37.:53:58.

that? I don't think so. He really wants to get James Willstrop into

:53:59.:54:02.

the front corners of the court. He is able to do that because of that

:54:03.:54:08.

elastic movement. He is so far forward in the middle of the court

:54:09.:54:09.

after every shot he plays. Well, get used to it. You will see

:54:10.:56:00.

with the both of these guys, they use the height of the court so well.

:56:01.:56:05.

They don't force the pace too much. I try to get the ball right in the

:56:06.:56:10.

back corners. You will see the foot speed, the racket speed, and then

:56:11.:56:11.

the attack. There is a threat there. We have not

:56:12.:57:34.

seen James missed many of those shots, but he knows he has to go so

:57:35.:57:40.

close to put the pressure on Nick Matthew.

:57:41.:57:59.

My contact lenses came out. Otherwise I will not be able to

:58:00.:58:14.

see! Brilliant! That would have given James Willstrop a bit of an

:58:15.:58:20.

advantage. The referee asked him to use the force.

:58:21.:58:28.

It was worth a try! Get him back on court with just one contact lens.

:58:29.:58:38.

Well, he has lost to him so many times. That's right. The last time

:58:39.:58:55.

James beat Nick in the PSA, either in the world ranking tournament for

:58:56.:58:57.

the Commonwealth Games, was in December 2007. That is quite a while

:58:58.:59:14.

away. If there is anyone who uses contact lenses, it is something you

:59:15.:59:21.

would rather do in private. It is pretty important that he gets it in

:59:22.:59:38.

without feeling any pain. So, we had the English flags up.

:59:39.:00:02.

Good friends, these two? I think there is a lot of respect. But it is

:00:03.:00:13.

tough to be close friends when you are both competing for the same big

:00:14.:00:19.

prize. You put so much work into it. There has been a little bit of

:00:20.:00:24.

history of tension between these guys. They are both from Yorkshire.

:00:25.:00:52.

Going just for a little bit too much. Trying to force it a bit.

:00:53.:00:58.

Obviously doesn't feel comfortable going long, trying to catch his

:00:59.:01:00.

Obviously doesn't feel comfortable going long, trying to catch owe

:01:01.:01:00.

pponent out. A few errors from both players at

:01:01.:01:53.

the start of this match, a little bit nervy.

:01:54.:02:56.

A wry smile. Very nice use of the lob, both as a

:02:57.:03:04.

defensive shot and an attacking shot.

:03:05.:03:27.

An unusual set of mistakes by James Wilstrop. It's taking a little time

:03:28.:03:38.

to settle into this match. We see Prince Imran from Malaysia.

:03:39.:04:33.

He's a big unit to get around, isn't he, Willstrop? He certainly controls

:04:34.:04:39.

the middle of the court very well. Another mistake in the front court

:04:40.:04:57.

from Willstrop. So this opening game moving quickly

:04:58.:05:24.

away from James Wilstrop. That's the best rally he's played so

:05:25.:06:17.

far James Wilstrop, totally in control. Yeah, absolutely. Just his

:06:18.:06:21.

hold and then that straight punch with his forehand. Then he takes his

:06:22.:06:26.

space, a couple of times here. One of his best shots. If he'd have

:06:27.:06:31.

lost that point, he might have let this game goment

:06:32.:07:07.

That was sporting. Immediately sthau he wasn't able to get it before the

:07:08.:07:15.

second bounce. Great position from James Wilstrop

:07:16.:07:16.

on the backhand side. Amazing reactions from both players.

:07:17.:08:39.

He says he couldn't help but hit him.

:08:40.:08:53.

The ball was going towards the front wall. He wasn't looking for him. The

:08:54.:09:00.

front wall is obviously how the referee's make the criteria. If it's

:09:01.:09:04.

going towards the front wall and you hit your opponent, it's a stroke.

:09:05.:09:08.

Unless you intentionally do it, and then it's dangerous play. That

:09:09.:09:12.

wasn't the case. Not the case in that.

:09:13.:09:16.

In that last rally James Wilstrop found himself in front of Nick

:09:17.:09:22.

Majkova quite a -- Nick Matthew. It's like possession in football,

:09:23.:09:26.

you increase your probability of controlling the game, getting more

:09:27.:09:30.

opportunities in the middle and just causing more frustration from your

:09:31.:09:34.

owe pontent by being -- opponent by being trapped behind.

:09:35.:09:41.

Only been going about 20 minutes but the court is pretty well soaked.

:09:42.:09:45.

Especially the backcourt. That time the drop was perfect.

:09:46.:10:45.

The position in the middle of the court, great position, we see it

:10:46.:10:49.

here. Slightly comes back. A perfect shot.

:10:50.:12:57.

Stroke to Matthew. He's going to appeal.

:12:58.:13:07.

It seemed to me that Matthew was looking for that. Well, I don't know

:13:08.:13:11.

if he was quite in possession of the play, it was a loose shot by James

:13:12.:13:16.

Wilstrop into the middle of the court caused by the tight shot of

:13:17.:13:20.

Nick Matthew. He could have taken it off the back wall, but we go to the

:13:21.:13:23.

appeal judge. Stroke it is. Willstrop not

:13:24.:13:42.

complaining, but it's an important point.

:13:43.:14:10.

It is stroke. Nick Matthew not being able to play the ball in the middle

:14:11.:14:18.

of the court. James Wilstrop tried to fire into the crosscourt with his

:14:19.:14:22.

forehand. It just didn't work. It wasn't far away. The ball was pretty

:14:23.:14:26.

bouncy and it sat up in the middle for Nick to get the stroke.

:14:27.:14:30.

A bit of house keeping. Now a chance for Matthew to take

:14:31.:14:37.

this opening game. He's not out of it. He's invested a

:14:38.:15:15.

lot in this game. He's become increasingly successful.

:15:16.:15:32.

Superb shot. Brave from James Wilstrop, the latter half of this

:15:33.:15:42.

game, since being 8-3 down. He's been the controlling player.

:15:43.:16:39.

Willstrop was plumbing and Matthew with all that he possessed but

:16:40.:16:48.

Matthew holds on. -- coming at Matthew. Matthew Leeds 1-0.

:16:49.:16:58.

That was closely fought and we will be going back very shortly but I

:16:59.:17:03.

bring you news from Carnoustie on the eastern side of Scotland and the

:17:04.:17:12.

shooting. There has been another medal for England. 34-year-old

:17:13.:17:19.

Caroline Pavey taking the bronze against Natalie Rooney of New

:17:20.:17:22.

Zealand. Caroline is a marketing manager and coached by her dad. They

:17:23.:17:23.

train in Derbyshire. She is bronze medallist. They are having a great

:17:24.:17:26.

time as well because they celebrated Adam Peaty's medal in the breast

:17:27.:17:34.

stroke, also from Derbyshire. Have you recovered from the high drama on

:17:35.:17:38.

the range? Yes, thrilled to win the medal. Absolutely thrilled to win a

:17:39.:17:47.

bronze medal. Did you want to win a medal to emulate your father? Is he

:17:48.:17:57.

here? Yes, my dad won gold and silver when the Games were last held

:17:58.:18:03.

here in Scotland. I couldn't be more chuffed. That was so thrilling,

:18:04.:18:12.

going to sudden death. After all of that, it came down to one target

:18:13.:18:23.

which shows how exciting shooting can be. Very tense but thankfully it

:18:24.:18:42.

went in my favour. Natalie shot fantastic. In that semifinal you

:18:43.:18:55.

just missed out for the shoot out to get into the gold medal by one shot,

:18:56.:19:07.

and that is how fine the margins are. Yes, definitely. Every shot

:19:08.:19:22.

counts. Still delighted to get a medal. Many congratulations. Thank

:19:23.:19:31.

you. Further good news for England because in the men's 50 metres

:19:32.:19:41.

rifle, Kemp are has won bronze, the 25-year-old from Croydon. -- Ken

:19:42.:19:49.

Parr. His father won two bronze medals in Kuala Lumpur so talent

:19:50.:19:56.

clearly runs in the family. Caroline Posey won that very tight match.

:19:57.:20:00.

Let's head back to this, where Matthew was not yet quite This is

:20:01.:20:13.

the case with the white ball, it doesn't retain as much heat as the

:20:14.:20:14.

black ball you might play with. Oh, well played. That was obvious

:20:15.:20:54.

strategy from both guys, get in front, hit the drop shot, keep it

:20:55.:20:56.

tight to the wall. No let that time. #12346789 That's

:20:57.:21:47.

James Wilstrop's bread and butter. Willstrop a lot more effective now

:21:48.:22:16.

at the front court than he was. Attack, counterattack and then great

:22:17.:22:25.

touch. He's starting to dominate again.

:22:26.:22:42.

Matthew guessing. Too good. James Wilstrop in that

:22:43.:23:47.

familiar position, where he gets slightly in front on the backhand

:23:48.:23:51.

side, giving himself some space. Shows the straight drive and plays

:23:52.:23:54.

around the angles. This could be a big turning point

:23:55.:24:01.

right here. this second game is really to do

:24:02.:25:02.

with the investment he made in the first game, where he really

:25:03.:25:04.

controlled the second part of that first game.

:25:05.:25:43.

That could be a stroke. Stroke to Matthew. Straight in front. So

:25:44.:25:59.

Matthew now at 3-5 and taking the opening game.

:26:00.:26:26.

It was a risky shot from James Willstrop but sometimes worth going

:26:27.:26:38.

for it to stem the comeback of the player.

:26:39.:26:57.

Stroke to Matthew. He didn't have room to play his shot so another

:26:58.:27:07.

stroke to Matthew. And from 2-5 he is 5-5.

:27:08.:27:48.

Now, there is a lead there. Matthew is appealing because he thinks it

:27:49.:28:01.

should be a stroke. -- let there. It would be unlikely he could even hit

:28:02.:28:03.

the ball with his racket that Pharoah. -- that far up. And he made

:28:04.:28:13.

sure there was contact as he came through just to take the pudding a

:28:14.:28:19.

bit further. The ball had a bit more than I thought. Interesting decision

:28:20.:28:20.

for the referee. Taking some time for the video

:28:21.:28:30.

review to help. It is a let and no stroke. So

:28:31.:28:54.

Matthew has no more video appeals in this game.

:28:55.:29:18.

Wow! Outrageous shot. To concede it, and yet to produce it something

:29:19.:29:29.

else. He kind of lifted his leg to give himself a bit more height on

:29:30.:29:30.

the ball. Great shot. Yes! Another rifle crack from

:29:31.:29:56.

Willstrop and he moves two points clear.

:29:57.:30:32.

Yes. And just as he was at this stage in the opening game, Willstrop

:30:33.:30:41.

in control at the moment. It can he finish it off? He is using angles

:30:42.:30:45.

and dissension here, changing the direction of the ball with his

:30:46.:31:04.

strong wrist. -- deception. Using his phenomenal reach. What a stretch

:31:05.:31:11.

that was from Willstrop. He used all of his six feet four to get there.

:31:12.:31:44.

He was there in position. He would have hoped to have made that shot.

:31:45.:31:48.

That is a tough one. Oh, yes. Would you say at this

:31:49.:32:29.

stage, after what we saw in the first one, that this is a must win

:32:30.:32:36.

game? Absolutely. He can't afford to go two down. He made the investment

:32:37.:32:41.

in the first game and controlled the latter half but then lost that

:32:42.:32:46.

investment. He really needs this. He would lose a lot of spirit if he

:32:47.:32:55.

ends up losing face but he is such a good hustler, Nick. He has got to

:32:56.:33:03.

finishing off. So good. That is going to help. Playing at his best

:33:04.:33:11.

level as he has in the match now. Four game balls.

:33:12.:33:36.

So good. Could be too little too late in this game. Still three game

:33:37.:33:46.

points for Willstrop. Yes. The first shot was not sure and

:33:47.:34:15.

couldn't make the move. Two saved and two more to save.

:34:16.:34:47.

Knowing look from Matthew as if to say,, only a let but just letting

:34:48.:34:58.

him know he was not particularly pleased with that.

:34:59.:35:16.

Matthew hustling but this time to no avail. Willstrop deserved the game

:35:17.:35:23.

and he has got it. It is one all in the men's final.

:35:24.:35:41.

You have got to stay aggressive through the middle. Whatever you do

:35:42.:35:47.

to get the ball past him, watch the wit to his right side. Whatever you

:35:48.:35:55.

do to get the ball around him. Fascinating match. We will get back

:35:56.:35:58.

to this shortly. If Badminton is your bag, then the team gold is up

:35:59.:36:05.

for grabs at the Emirates right now, England against the later. Chris and

:36:06.:36:12.

Gabby Adcock have won the mixed doubles, so 1-0 up. And the England

:36:13.:36:17.

captain is currently involved in singles action. All on BBC Three for

:36:18.:36:23.

you right now. If you preferred that, be our guest and we are going

:36:24.:36:31.

to stick exactly where we are at the squash.

:36:32.:36:44.

front, doing very well in the corners. As we heard from David

:36:45.:36:51.

Campion, the assistant English coach, really just his normal game,

:36:52.:36:56.

which is hold, punch, hold, punch to the back of the court, then have a

:36:57.:36:59.

lot of intent, when he's in the middle of the court to get most of

:37:00.:37:04.

his success going short. We saw that from Nick Matthew. That will down to

:37:05.:37:09.

whoever manages get in front first and have that first attack and the

:37:10.:37:16.

first attack into the p. We saw it from Nick Matthew the rallies of

:37:17.:37:22.

that game. That's going to be the battle here, who can get in front.

:37:23.:37:28.

Who can finish it off. You say hold punch, hold meaning

:37:29.:37:34.

your position? The hold the ball, hold the racquet, you can play the

:37:35.:37:40.

straight shot. Then punch it to the back. Let your guy come forward,

:37:41.:37:42.

make him stop and him go The other thing that is noticeable

:37:43.:38:01.

about Willstrop is he plays the ball very late. It's hard to see where

:38:02.:38:06.

the ball is going to go. Nick Matthew is a master of deception.

:38:07.:38:11.

Every single shot, he shows one shot, plays the other.

:38:12.:38:51.

One of the few unforced errors he's made.

:38:52.:39:12.

Perfect. Let given. Lovely delivery from Matthew.

:39:13.:39:56.

He wanted more. But then he always wants more. He's not going to argue

:39:57.:40:07.

the toss. It was a lovely counterdrop from

:40:08.:40:09.

James Wilstrop. Just above the ten. Those first two games were the first

:40:10.:40:27.

both players have dropped in the tournament so far. Blemish free

:40:28.:40:34.

until the final, but they didn't think this was going to be easy.

:40:35.:41:02.

Phenomenal play. A let given. It was a loose shot from James. The referee

:41:03.:41:21.

saying the ball was almost past him. The straight drive little bit loose.

:41:22.:41:26.

Nick not quite ready to play that He's working shot. The officialers

:41:27.:41:29.

p, isn't he? Wizardry again from James Wilstrop.

:41:30.:42:15.

Great anticipation. He played that backhand drop shot from the back of

:42:16.:42:20.

the court. He knew the counterdrop was going to come. From there, it

:42:21.:42:25.

was over Nick's head. Just great anticipation.

:42:26.:42:45.

No let. Certainly a lot of hugging going on, but it's not out of

:42:46.:42:54.

friendship at the moment. It's always expected when you get two

:42:55.:42:58.

guys that want to control the middle of the court, especially when they

:42:59.:43:02.

play the straight drop shot or volley drop, you are nationally

:43:03.:43:05.

going to be in the way. The player wants to get through to it. The

:43:06.:43:10.

referee plays a big part, as we see here again.

:43:11.:43:18.

Willstrop a huge unit and Matthew not that much smaller.

:43:19.:44:00.

The right shot. Yes, it was. It was nice width from both players. Nick

:44:01.:44:11.

Matthew starting to hit the floor before hitting the side wall.

:44:12.:44:41.

We see the last few rallies, Nick Matthew really controlling the

:44:42.:44:49.

middle. This time, deciding to change the angles. Simple traffic

:44:50.:44:57.

problem, this time with the racquet, play it again.

:44:58.:45:45.

The final shot not good enough, I'm afraid from Willstrop. Matthew

:45:46.:45:58.

really showing us why he's got as high as he is. The number two player

:45:59.:45:59.

in the world. He's more in charge at the moment,

:46:00.:46:19.

than he has been in the match. Better length. Really penning James

:46:20.:46:23.

in at the back corners. So much control with the volley.

:46:24.:46:53.

That is where I get a little confused. He was in position to play

:46:54.:46:58.

a shot. Whether he had enough position to play the right shot, not

:46:59.:47:03.

sure, that he could have played a shot. The basic rule is that you

:47:04.:47:07.

have to give your player space to play the ball, access to the ball

:47:08.:47:11.

and space to play it. If the other player had the ability to play a

:47:12.:47:16.

winning shot, then it is a stroke. The emphasis in this situation is on

:47:17.:47:21.

whether James Willstrop cleared the path enough for Nick Matthew to play

:47:22.:47:23.

the ball. As the game moves on, we are going

:47:24.:47:49.

to see more of that from James Willstrop. He is a very heavy guy,

:47:50.:47:55.

over 90 kilos, six feet four. He can still get to the ball but whether he

:47:56.:47:59.

can recover well enough to clear the ball from his opponent, that is a

:48:00.:48:05.

different matter. Absolutely. That was clear for me but the one before

:48:06.:48:11.

I was not sure about. I am taking your point now.

:48:12.:48:50.

Well played. We are hitting the hour mark now. Do you sense that

:48:51.:49:02.

Willstrop is losing a little bit of sharpness? I think so. He is still

:49:03.:49:07.

getting to the ball but his recovery is not quite as good, as we have

:49:08.:49:12.

seen. That was a very good shot, cleared the space and got into it.

:49:13.:49:18.

But more than that, Nick Matthew is taking advantage of James's is

:49:19.:49:26.

likely -- slight slowness. Well, Willstrop is coming at him

:49:27.:49:48.

now, three points in a row. But is it too late to rescue this third

:49:49.:49:49.

game? Silky smooth. And here are six

:49:50.:50:56.

points for Nick Matthew. -- six game points.

:50:57.:51:05.

Yes, came out too wide. Nick trying to catch out James Down the wall.

:51:06.:51:15.

Normally under pressure when you go crosscourt. Layers tend to read

:51:16.:51:17.

that. -- players. Lovely finish. It needed a response

:51:18.:51:35.

from Nick Matthew after what happened in the second game and he

:51:36.:51:42.

supplied it. And the number one seed is a game away from this

:51:43.:51:52.

Commonwealth Games title. It was pretty emphatic. We saw James

:51:53.:51:58.

slowing down a bit, as we said. His recovery was not as good as it has

:51:59.:52:04.

been. Maybe that is the matchup between these two. Nick Matthew

:52:05.:52:10.

might just be better over Willstrop. hold on the end. That is where you

:52:11.:52:36.

need to go. When he gets in that quick position, off-balance, you

:52:37.:52:40.

push up again. There is no space on the court. Really deep. Absolutely.

:52:41.:52:44.

You know. It is all about the finer details.

:52:45.:52:58.

You can't afford to drop off your length.

:52:59.:53:09.

Not sure how much you picked up of that but it seems to me that he was

:53:10.:53:16.

saying the length is vital. Length is vital and to string together the

:53:17.:53:20.

pressure shots. When he sees that James is struggling a little bit,

:53:21.:53:25.

don't let him back into the rally. Just try to take the next ball

:53:26.:53:30.

early. That will be key to create the space in the court. And what you

:53:31.:53:35.

were talking about them, holding as long as possible. Yes. The longer

:53:36.:53:41.

the match goes on, the more physical it becomes will James Willstrop. It

:53:42.:53:44.

will be hard for him to come forward, then go back and then go

:53:45.:53:51.

back. This is the story of the match a lot of times between these two.

:53:52.:53:56.

That is James Willstrop just slowing down as the match progresses. Nick

:53:57.:54:00.

Matthew still bouncing away. He hasn't controlled much of this

:54:01.:54:05.

match, to be fair, but he is a great hustler and now he has his reward.

:54:06.:54:10.

Willstrop is on the ropes, a bit tired, but can you take advantage?

:54:11.:54:20.

65 minutes we have been going. Nick Matthew 2-1, one game away from

:54:21.:54:34.

defending his title. When of gold in singles and doubles in Delhi --

:54:35.:54:43.

winner. Is there going to be more frustration for James Willstrop?

:54:44.:55:08.

Yes. Razor sharp at the start of this fourth game, Willstrop.

:55:09.:55:48.

Yes, looks like Matthew has come out geared up for what he expects to be

:55:49.:55:57.

a severe test from Willstrop. Very sharp at the start of this fourth

:55:58.:55:59.

game. Tough because it was such a good

:56:00.:56:40.

shot from Willstrop. But he was impeding.

:56:41.:57:25.

sometimes one player prefers to keep the game very cold. If they keep

:57:26.:57:29.

hitting it, it gets warmer, but both guys seem to prefer a ball that is

:57:30.:57:35.

not too bouncy, not too cold. They want to use their movement but also

:57:36.:57:39.

they want to use their own shots, the broad shots in the front

:57:40.:57:40.

corners. So they would do a viewpoint is when

:57:41.:58:14.

the ball is cooler? Just a -- do a few points? Just want to warm the

:58:15.:58:25.

ball up a little bit. It tends to be chaotic if it is very cold, it just

:58:26.:58:28.

goes point-to-point, like that. The point is beginning to pile up

:58:29.:58:37.

for Matthew? Well played. Willstrop stopping the

:58:38.:58:59.

potential run. Three points in a row for Nick

:59:00.:59:13.

Matthew. Again Nick showing the referee that

:59:14.:59:41.

he wanted to get through and he wanted to hit it. James Willstrop is

:59:42.:59:45.

not quite clearing the ball yet again.

:59:46.:59:54.

Well, it wasn't the worst shot in its conception. Unforced error.

:59:55.:00:39.

Those half chances are going to be very important for James Willstrop.

:00:40.:00:42.

He can't afford to make an error at this stage.

:00:43.:01:10.

Interference, just a let. He gets the explanation. I would not

:01:11.:01:22.

say he is content, but he is accepting it.

:01:23.:01:57.

So good! Amazing defence. Showing that straight volley. The most

:01:58.:02:16.

beautiful shot. Again, under pressure early in the

:02:17.:03:48.

rally, amazing speed from Willstrop.

:03:49.:03:54.

He is in good position. When he could be under pressure he is

:03:55.:03:58.

getting up in front and has only got a step or two Mac to attack the next

:03:59.:04:01.

shot. He thought about stopping earlier

:04:02.:04:38.

on, but finally does so them. Nick Matthew, just a little bit off

:04:39.:04:46.

balance. Has not been as decisive as he usually is. It is possible he

:04:47.:04:50.

could be getting tired and frustrated. He had any operation a

:04:51.:05:08.

month ago. -- a knee operation. Just stretching the muscle around it.

:05:09.:05:21.

Very rapid across to that. Better play. Three great pressure shots in

:05:22.:05:32.

a row. Skintight. And now Willstrop with a

:05:33.:06:01.

two Mac point Superb. Great play. Not much pace in

:06:02.:06:37.

that rally, just very accurate. Punching the ball in for a winner.

:06:38.:06:57.

Now then. Is that given? Willstrop, not going to push it. Nicole David.

:06:58.:07:17.

A happy day for her. Gold-medallist in the women's event.

:07:18.:08:17.

Yes! Monster rally! What an incredible rally! Both

:08:18.:08:32.

players running on the diagonals, both sides, phenomenal play. So,

:08:33.:08:49.

Willstrop now, two points from taking us to a deciding game.

:08:50.:09:03.

Maybe that last rally was worth two points. He still has a cushion but

:09:04.:09:12.

does not want to make elementary mistakes like that. Has done a great

:09:13.:09:18.

job keeping the pressure on nick Matthew in this game.

:09:19.:09:46.

Again, perfect delivery from Willstrop who now has four Mac game

:09:47.:09:53.

points. He is just not clearing. He has done

:09:54.:10:31.

that the whole match. The referee saying, well, we know, but the shot

:10:32.:10:35.

was too good. Too good. Now it is a one-game shoot

:10:36.:11:16.

out. The crowd roaring for both players. What a match. He has done

:11:17.:11:34.

so much here that you have too worried it might end up the same

:11:35.:11:41.

way, with him as a runner-up. But he was at his very best then. I have

:11:42.:11:53.

got to say I thought that James Willstrop might have been dead and

:11:54.:11:57.

buried after the third game, he was looking very sluggish. But managed

:11:58.:12:03.

to get in front of Matthew and foremost of that game, Matthew had

:12:04.:12:08.

some opportunities, we saw a couple of chinks in the armour, not really

:12:09.:12:13.

getting his feet in position or his racquet ready, normally a great

:12:14.:12:19.

possible, but it is James Hook came through and sent it to a fifth.

:12:20.:12:25.

Matthew had a minor operation on his knee. How much do you imagine he has

:12:26.:12:32.

been able to train. And is seeking good enough shape to give everything

:12:33.:12:41.

you would want to in fifth game? Obviously after that procedure you

:12:42.:12:46.

need a certain amount of time off. But he only had about a week. He

:12:47.:12:52.

then had squash training and match practice. Will that play a part? It

:12:53.:12:59.

is possible. But both are such great competitors. The momentum is

:13:00.:13:06.

swinging one way then the other. Difficult to predict. James will

:13:07.:13:11.

want to take up but unity is quite as having missed so many in the

:13:12.:13:13.

past. -- opportunities like this. Do not worry about the flick too

:13:14.:13:38.

much. Just get it in. Hitting well. All that he has achieved in his

:13:39.:13:42.

career, it has been formidable, could it be building up to this one

:13:43.:13:49.

game? James Willstrop in this Commonwealth Games final.

:13:50.:14:06.

We just heard David has coach saying, stick it in when you have

:14:07.:14:13.

the opportunity, do not worry about flicking it crosscourt, changing

:14:14.:14:18.

direction, just do the simple things well. What he means by that is the

:14:19.:14:23.

straight drop and the straight volley drop, keep it tight to the

:14:24.:14:33.

wall. After an hour and 25 minutes, the deciding game in this gold medal

:14:34.:14:35.

match. A wonderful little drop shot from

:14:36.:14:49.

Matthew. Took his space. These two are very crisp still. Very

:14:50.:17:07.

impressive start to this game. The ball just a bit colder. Rallies very

:17:08.:17:17.

short right now. And we are seeing a straight volley drop winning most of

:17:18.:17:18.

these rallies. Oh, yes. Millimetre perfect from

:17:19.:17:48.

Matthew. I think all tactics are out the window now. This is just point

:17:49.:17:53.

by point right now. Who gets in front quickest and who manages to

:17:54.:17:55.

stick in the drop. Stroke to Matthew. When it came out

:17:56.:18:20.

awkwardly I think Willstrop must have feared it. We are seeing Nick

:18:21.:18:27.

Matthew's drive and determination. Getting his feet in position better

:18:28.:18:28.

than in the fourth game. An urgent look up from Willstrop. I

:18:29.:18:51.

think he thought it would not be called out but it was eventually.

:18:52.:19:08.

Surprised at that shot? Nick Matthew after he walked away from that

:19:09.:19:17.

position just pointed to the back corner, telling himself, why are you

:19:18.:19:22.

going for that? Just get it to the back corner, take your opportunity,

:19:23.:19:29.

wait for it. Pointing to the back corner.

:19:30.:20:56.

Perfect angle from Matthew. And a good response to this potential

:20:57.:21:09.

threat from Willstrop early on. Did well to manoeuvre himself away from

:21:10.:21:10.

that. He has made so many. You can't

:21:11.:21:58.

criticise him for going for it. It was a good choice of shot and the

:21:59.:22:04.

ball was quite high. Maybe you would have been better being a little bit

:22:05.:22:07.

more patient and waiting for an opportunity.

:22:08.:22:21.

Somebody was using their camera to the side of the court.

:22:22.:23:06.

Going the wrong way. Lucky in a way that it was a let that he was

:23:07.:23:16.

completely fooled. Matthew so far expecting the crosscourt.

:23:17.:23:43.

That is unexpected. Both guys, great opportunities in the last couple of

:23:44.:23:54.

rallies. Nick Matthew had James Willstrop behind him, had it on his

:23:55.:23:59.

racket. Normally a killer shot for Nick.

:24:00.:24:27.

Some interference there. No, there wasn't. No contact. We saw that

:24:28.:24:48.

there was. You are welcome to use the video. Willstrop saying there

:24:49.:24:54.

was no contact but he is not risking a review.

:24:55.:25:03.

Nick Matthew saying that he caught James Willstrop. He did stop before

:25:04.:25:09.

he played his shot. Very tense time for both players.

:25:10.:25:53.

Three errors in the last three rallies. Three points between

:25:54.:26:00.

Matthew and a second successive gold.

:26:01.:27:14.

No! After all that. You can see Matthew pumping his fist for winning

:27:15.:27:27.

that one. Great tussle from both players. These guys still able to

:27:28.:27:34.

run around the court after a very hard-fought match. Really it is just

:27:35.:27:37.

adrenaline and desire driving these guys on now. James Willstrop,

:27:38.:27:44.

normally his go to shots to get points.

:27:45.:28:00.

Yes, stroke, no doubt about it. Matthew has one looked up at the

:28:01.:28:10.

scoreboard to see that he is two points from victory.

:28:11.:28:52.

Stroke to Matthew. He is going to appeal but I wonder if it is because

:28:53.:29:03.

it is towards the end of the match. There is not a lot to lose. Giving

:29:04.:29:14.

the referee every possible chance to give a let. But could he have made

:29:15.:29:19.

Matthew play that ball? The last move towards the wall was very late.

:29:20.:29:26.

Maybe Matthew felt he couldn't play a shot.

:29:27.:29:38.

It is stroke and it is match point. The gold medal point.

:29:39.:30:36.

gold medal goes to the world number two Mac, Nick Matthew. He kisses the

:30:37.:30:47.

knee. Many people thought he would not be here. But what can you say to

:30:48.:30:57.

James Willstrop? It so often in critical matches. Again he is the

:30:58.:31:05.

nearly man. Nick Matthew has won two Mac successive single commonwealth

:31:06.:31:15.

gold medals. Incredible effort to comeback from injury after an

:31:16.:31:20.

operation. Once again, clinches commonwealth gold. The hustle, the

:31:21.:31:32.

desire, the drive, the determination of Nick Matthew, brought him through

:31:33.:31:39.

in the end. Just a couple of points in that fifth game, games

:31:40.:31:48.

Willstrop, his go to shots, they proved to be crucial. Nick Matthew

:31:49.:31:57.

comes away again, gold-medallist. There is his wife. A baby to be

:31:58.:32:11.

born. A very proud mum and dad. Boy, did he have to work for that.

:32:12.:32:17.

Mentally as well as physically, a gruelling match. Absolutely. One of

:32:18.:32:24.

the best performances from him that I have seen in a while. Again, James

:32:25.:32:33.

retaining his title as the nearly man. He needed to win to do justice

:32:34.:32:43.

to his talent, but was up against this man. An incredibly successful

:32:44.:32:49.

player. One of the top athletes in the world over the last ten years.

:32:50.:33:05.

Even time for a photo. But opportunistic young man will go far!

:33:06.:33:23.

A beaming smile. His list of achievements goes on and on. Three

:33:24.:33:29.

times the world open champion. Now a double Commonwealth Games

:33:30.:33:32.

medallist. He was the flag bearer for England

:33:33.:33:44.

and is now very much the standard there for squash. -- standard there.

:33:45.:33:57.

Nick, you have come through with a gold medal.

:33:58.:34:03.

Those who know me know that it is not often I am speechless. But I do

:34:04.:34:07.

not have much to say about that. What a battle. We have had some over

:34:08.:34:13.

the years but I just take my hat off to James. What he has been through

:34:14.:34:18.

in the last few weeks, to help put on a show like that, what a great

:34:19.:34:23.

advert for the teams that have got us here.

:34:24.:34:30.

The momentum was with him earlier. Yes, I was so edgy with my drop

:34:31.:34:35.

shots. It felt like I was playing with a different racquet. He was

:34:36.:34:40.

playing better, I thought, and I was just digging in. The Games that I

:34:41.:34:47.

won, that was a start. If it had stayed level pegging, he would have

:34:48.:34:54.

been favourite. And your coach, Chris, what did he say? Something

:34:55.:34:59.

about getting your opponent to the back of the court all the time?

:35:00.:35:05.

He basically just told me my drop shots were terrible! Told me to

:35:06.:35:11.

resort to old-fashioned, caveman squash. That is what I did.

:35:12.:35:20.

And you're injured knee, what about that support from the medics?

:35:21.:35:25.

Five weeks ago I was just waking up on a hospital bed. Throbbing pain in

:35:26.:35:33.

my body. Just five weeks ago today. How they have done that, Jade, Mark

:35:34.:35:40.

Campbell, Derek, the main people, and everyone who has worked with me,

:35:41.:35:46.

it is just incredible. They need to retire now. They cannot do any

:35:47.:35:50.

better than that. And your wife is expecting a baby,

:35:51.:35:56.

that will change things! Yes, this is the best moment of my

:35:57.:36:01.

life, but I am sure they will be an even better moment to come!

:36:02.:36:14.

Well said, good save! Jamie, flat out at the end.

:36:15.:36:24.

Yes, but seriously no complaints. I am still thrilled with what I have

:36:25.:36:29.

done. It was an awed 56 weeks for both of us. -- odd five or six

:36:30.:36:50.

weeks. I am disappointed, but I am almost not. To have got to where I

:36:51.:36:58.

am, six weeks ago, I was nearly not even playing, just thrilled to be

:36:59.:37:02.

here, and it has been a wonderful experience. You were back in

:37:03.:37:13.

contention by game four. Compare to him there has not been an awful lot

:37:14.:37:19.

of stuff going on, and OK few weeks. So I had stuff left in the tank. But

:37:20.:37:24.

in the fifth, he just one it with squash. I left it all out there. My

:37:25.:37:33.

physio told me to do that. Alison. A quick shout to her.

:37:34.:37:40.

Great stuff. Well done, from all of us.

:37:41.:37:47.

Squash is not in the Olympics, so that really is the sport at the

:37:48.:37:54.

highest possible level. We were thrilled by it in the studio. Time

:37:55.:38:00.

now to cross the River Clyde to the Hydro. We have seen her extra from

:38:01.:38:05.

Frankie Jones in the rhythmic gymnastics. -- heroics. Now the

:38:06.:38:14.

other home nations are itching to get in on the act.

:38:15.:39:30.

They made quite a team together in London but now they go their

:39:31.:39:39.

separate ways. England and Scotland, the fireworks could begin. We are in

:39:40.:39:57.

the company of Beth Tweddle. How is the Hydro suitable for gymnastics?

:39:58.:40:03.

It is incredible. The atmosphere is building. They are really geared up

:40:04.:40:13.

for this. This is the basis of a lot of qualification for the individual

:40:14.:40:18.

all-around, the apparatus, but it will be different this time around,

:40:19.:40:21.

over two Mac days. How will that work?

:40:22.:40:26.

They will do three pieces of apparatus for the men, two Mac for

:40:27.:40:30.

the woman, then come back tomorrow and finish the competition. Mentally

:40:31.:40:36.

it will be very difficult to get yourself prepared for two days of

:40:37.:40:41.

competition. It is like a heptathlon of

:40:42.:40:48.

gymnastics, very strange! Let's see how they get on. Straight into the

:40:49.:40:53.

men's competition. England, Scotland, Canada, in the first

:40:54.:40:59.

rotation. The three best scores will count. Let's get into it in the

:41:00.:41:08.

company of our commentary team. England start with Nile Wilson who

:41:09.:41:14.

has just come from the junior ranks. Here he is. His first senior

:41:15.:41:22.

competition and that is the way you do it. Such a well-controlled

:41:23.:41:30.

gymnast. Double twist, straight front with half term. -- turn.

:41:31.:41:44.

Double Arabian. You can see the landing, so precise. Although a

:41:45.:41:54.

junior, very experienced. But this is his first senior competition and

:41:55.:41:57.

he will want to show everybody he can handle it. A real responsibility

:41:58.:42:06.

on his shoulders to open the team competition for England. A little

:42:07.:42:11.

pause for thought, and that is how you land. He is not finished yet.

:42:12.:42:20.

Now, he knows he must concentrate. A final tumble. Triple twist, not a

:42:21.:42:29.

worry, what classy work. Smooth as you like from the

:42:30.:42:33.

18-year-old. Welcome to the world of senior competition. Just the

:42:34.:42:39.

performance you need, your first man up reducing VAT. That is the way to

:42:40.:42:54.

go, 14 Scotland. Very nicely done. Very good

:42:55.:43:00.

discipline. But he has lost the shape and the

:43:01.:43:11.

handstand. Now he is working. Some sort of control back now but

:43:12.:43:32.

still not as smooth as he would like all stop OK, one and a half twists.

:43:33.:43:44.

Coped well with the blind landing. Over two Zach Clay.

:43:45.:43:54.

What a routine for Nile Wilson. 14.458.

:43:55.:44:10.

Kristian Thomas, next up for England. The pressure is very

:44:11.:44:16.

different, competing against your British team-mates. Into a double

:44:17.:44:31.

Arabian. A tall, powerful gymnast. Has to work hard to stay inside the

:44:32.:44:37.

floor area. That was an uncharacteristic mistake. Kept his

:44:38.:44:42.

hands off the floor, but overcooked it. Read James his composure. And

:44:43.:44:56.

that is lovely. Missing the feet, rolling right out. Very smooth.

:44:57.:45:20.

Plenty of control. He will want to make absolutely sure of this

:45:21.:45:27.

landing. Double Arabian, he does. We have seen that so many times under

:45:28.:45:31.

pressure, but there was a definite mistake in the middle. Moves crept

:45:32.:45:42.

in. -- nerves. But he kept his focus and got through to the end.

:45:43.:45:48.

Daniel Purvis for Scotland. Stand-by a roar. What this stage this is for

:45:49.:46:25.

that medal winner from 2012. Opted to do the handstand in the middle of

:46:26.:46:34.

the routine and got his rhythm back. Lose legs. How did he rescue that

:46:35.:46:36.

swing? Back for the handstand. Some iffy

:46:37.:46:54.

moments there. Yes, but so far, jet for jitter, Kristian Thomas had one

:46:55.:47:02.

so Daniel can have one! -- jitter for jitter. They train together at

:47:03.:47:10.

the national centre most of the time. And there has been a lot of

:47:11.:47:15.

fun in the build-up for this battle. Who will prevail?

:47:16.:47:26.

Kristian Thomas will have that. That will do. Their next gymnast for

:47:27.:47:38.

England, Sam Oldham. He is looking sharp and he has got his eye on that

:47:39.:47:42.

all-around title. This is all about the team as well. A man with focus

:47:43.:47:52.

and a lovely start. Look at the acceleration here. Beautiful floor

:47:53.:47:56.

work. Little helicopter spin as well.

:47:57.:48:15.

Lovely link. Precision in the handstand. This is rhythm and I love

:48:16.:48:19.

that. Double twist and a little hop to the

:48:20.:48:29.

side. Sparkling. Triple twist. Two and seven eighths.

:48:30.:49:00.

But he did sparkle! World-class from the Sam Oldham! That is an

:49:01.:49:04.

invitation to the World Championship final. He would not look out of

:49:05.:49:11.

place on the podium. Daniel Purvis struggled through. 13.6. Another

:49:12.:49:22.

gymnast fresh out of the juniors, Frank Baines. His father is

:49:23.:49:28.

Scottish. Again from that pool of wonderful gymnasts.

:49:29.:49:36.

Reminiscent of the great Hungarian gymnast there. He has missed his

:49:37.:49:49.

grip. That is crucial. Junior and European champion on this piece of

:49:50.:49:57.

apparatus. There is not a lot of room on one handle and you need to

:49:58.:50:06.

be safely on. But it happens. Four up and three to count, so make the

:50:07.:50:08.

most of this experience. Precise hand placement. Technically

:50:09.:50:22.

excellent work. You would expect that from someone who has achieved

:50:23.:50:26.

what he has as a junior on this apparatus. The error was so

:50:27.:50:32.

unfortunate but look at the control in the dismount. This is a young man

:50:33.:50:40.

to watch. We talked earlier about the Commonwealth Games being a great

:50:41.:50:44.

platform for the juniors to come through to the seniors and

:50:45.:50:47.

experience competition with this kind of crowd. It does impact,

:50:48.:50:53.

doesn't it? Definitely. Frank has had some injury this year but he was

:50:54.:50:57.

a junior European champion two years previously, before Nile Watson. --

:50:58.:51:08.

Nile Wilson. A fantastic 15.3 to five, the highest floor score that

:51:09.:51:12.

we have seen today, vital for England and Sam Oldham.

:51:13.:51:16.

Well-deserved. Max Whitlock starts his first of six

:51:17.:51:31.

pieces of apparatus. Unbelievable skill at twisting. So fast and

:51:32.:51:43.

efficient. Three and a half into front somersault with half-turn.

:51:44.:51:51.

Floor and pommel his most impressive pieces. Very good work. Lovely body

:51:52.:52:00.

shape in the handstand as well. He makes twists look easy. He makes

:52:01.:52:29.

the floor look easy to land on. Big triple twist to finish with. Such

:52:30.:52:35.

classy work. England on target for gold. You have called it earlier but

:52:36.:52:46.

you are right, they are on target. This man works with such ease, a

:52:47.:52:53.

lovely laid-back style. Thinking of Nile and Frank. The Commonwealth

:52:54.:52:59.

Games was Max's senior debut. 13.64 Frank Baines. And this man here,

:53:00.:53:09.

Daniel Keatings, he will be making a bid for the pommel horse final

:53:10.:53:10.

here. It is all on this routine. There is nothing in between with

:53:11.:53:25.

him. If he goes through, it will be edge of your seat quality.

:53:26.:53:37.

Big routine. He has done it. But he did it just with a falter in the

:53:38.:54:08.

middle. Good work from Daniel Keatings. He has done enough to book

:54:09.:54:14.

himself a place in the final and Scotland have a chance of a pommel

:54:15.:54:20.

horse medal. You can see in his face that was what he wanted, to give

:54:21.:54:25.

himself the chance to fight for that medal by completing the routine.

:54:26.:54:29.

Yes, obvious loss of form here but it is all right. The judges will

:54:30.:54:36.

still deduct but the deductions against the very great difficulty

:54:37.:54:40.

will make sure he has got a good score. It is kind of forgiveable! He

:54:41.:54:50.

has a lovely style on the pommel horse. Well, that is it. First

:54:51.:54:57.

rotation over. Canada moved to the floor. England move to the pommel

:54:58.:55:02.

horse, where we will see the return of Louis Smith, and then Scotland on

:55:03.:55:07.

rings. Another chance to watch the magic of Max Whitlock. He is one

:55:08.:55:13.

that since 2012 has not rested on his laurels at all. A score of 15.6

:55:14.:55:20.

proves exactly that. Look at the execution, 8.9! He has added to his

:55:21.:55:25.

routines and straight back in the gym for that. Very much so. At South

:55:26.:55:37.

Essex club, coached by Scott. Daniel Keatings, 14.5, that will be enough

:55:38.:55:43.

to put him into the pommel horse final. Looking back, we wind back to

:55:44.:55:49.

the first rotation for all of the gymnasts to give you an idea of how

:55:50.:55:55.

they are doing. Scott Morgan of Canada currently in bronze medal

:55:56.:56:03.

position. Daniel Purvis joint 13th with Frank Baines. One piece of

:56:04.:56:15.

apparatus for everybody. Looking good for the home nations. Yes, and

:56:16.:56:21.

Max Whitlock, two bronze medals from 2012, he is the staff at the whole

:56:22.:56:26.

team, isn't he? He had a great couple of years. In London he won

:56:27.:56:30.

two bronze medals and he was not expecting that one on the pommel

:56:31.:56:36.

horse, but he did it at a world level. He made his senior debut at

:56:37.:56:40.

the Commonwealth Games four years ago, that it shows how the

:56:41.:56:45.

Commonwealth Games catapults them onto their senior career. Yes, and a

:56:46.:56:50.

great performance on the floor. 15.6 as a massive score for anyone to

:56:51.:56:57.

beat. Daniel Keatings, the man competing for Scotland, but he

:56:58.:57:01.

missed out on 2012 because of injury. How crucial could this be

:57:02.:57:06.

for him? Massive. He was devastated when he missed out in London but

:57:07.:57:11.

this is his home Games, representing Scotland, and he wants to do them

:57:12.:57:16.

proud. He will have been nervous because today is the all-important

:57:17.:57:18.

qualification. If he had made a mistake, he would not have got

:57:19.:57:23.

through to the final. He was a bit shaky but he can sort it out for the

:57:24.:57:28.

final. A bit of a wobble but he still has two of his greatest

:57:29.:57:31.

competitors in Max and Louis Smith to come. This will be the final that

:57:32.:57:48.

everybody wants to watch on the men's side. Louis, Max and Daniel

:57:49.:57:50.

Keatings, and they have never competed internationally against

:57:51.:57:52.

each other, so definitely the height of the gymnastics. 12 years ago when

:57:53.:58:01.

you were strutting yourself, at Manchester, success was the

:58:02.:58:04.

exception not the rule and now there is a lot of pressure. Yes, we go to

:58:05.:58:09.

come home with medals, in the Commonwealth Games and on the world

:58:10.:58:10.

stage. come home with medals, in the

:58:11.:58:12.

Commonwealth Games and on the When I was doing biographies of all of the

:58:13.:58:16.

gymnasts, there was world medal, European medal, and I thought, gosh,

:58:17.:58:23.

how many? We have got 27 world and European medals since 2007. That is

:58:24.:58:30.

hard to compute. Nile is making his debut here and he got an of medals

:58:31.:58:41.

at junior level. -- unheard-of number of medals. Stay with us. We

:58:42.:58:47.

are just about to switch channels. Day five has been exciting. Victory

:58:48.:58:56.

for Scotland in the lawn bowls, with another gold medal breaking their

:58:57.:59:00.

previous tally of six, and three short of the total Games record.

:59:01.:59:06.

Nick Matthew successfully defended his squash title after beating his

:59:07.:59:17.

fellow England rival Willstrop. Laura Massaro had to settle for

:59:18.:59:20.

silver in the women's final after losing to Malaysia's squash Queen

:59:21.:59:29.

and defending champion Nicol David. Jen Mackintosh has joined her mother

:59:30.:59:35.

surely as only one of three Scottish women to win four Commonwealth

:59:36.:59:39.

medals after taking bronze in the 50 metres rifle prone final, and that

:59:40.:59:45.

will be bragging rights for both mother and daughter today.

:59:46.:59:48.

Congratulations to them. We are hopping over to BBC Two now. I hope

:59:49.:59:52.

you will join us for much more from the Hydra and the gymnastics. In the

:59:53.:59:57.

meantime, from the rest of the team in Glasgow, catch you soon. Goodbye.

:59:58.:00:01.

We've got factory boys and butchers' apprentices and office clerks

:00:02.:00:04.

Don't stop moving! If you go back you'll die!
