straight to the event itself. It is the men's cross-country. This is

:00:00.:00:00.

what is happening. Over to the commentators.

:00:00.:00:22.

COMMENTATOR: The weather does not know what to do here in Glasgow,

:00:23.:00:28.

bright and sunny yesterday but today was the result to start then some

:00:29.:00:32.

sunshine and one thing that has remained consistent is the windy

:00:33.:00:40.

conditions. As you can see, significantly cooler than yesterday.

:00:41.:00:45.

When the riders were taking on this course in training. It is been

:00:46.:00:54.

fairly chilly as well. Some drizzle. Hopefully for this race the drizzle

:00:55.:00:59.

will stay away because the course could become a little bit

:01:00.:01:01.

treacherous given the amount of slate and rock on this very tricky

:01:02.:01:11.

but extremely quick course. The Commonwealth flags, you can see how

:01:12.:01:17.

wildly the wind is blowing. A number of horrible balls that could affect

:01:18.:01:20.

the riders as they make their way around the Cathkin Braes course. The

:01:21.:01:25.

stars lad has an extra 800 metres. In total it is 5.2 km after the

:01:26.:01:38.

first lap. Seven laps of this track, taking them up to just under 40 km.

:01:39.:01:43.

Broken Biscuits one of the significant segments, the Queen Mary

:01:44.:01:48.

's drop and Braveheart is where it starts to get technical. The

:01:49.:02:07.

majority of this course on a fairly slaty bed. Liam Killeen the only

:02:08.:02:10.

rider who has previously got a medal in this, he is the defending

:02:11.:02:15.

champion given this race did not happen in 2010. He took the gold

:02:16.:02:21.

medal in 2006. Killeen hopeful of retaining that Crown for England.

:02:22.:02:25.

medal in 2006. Killeen hopeful of retaining that Paul Oldham another

:02:26.:02:33.

English rider in there. Cameron Ivory and Andy Blair representing

:02:34.:02:36.

Australia. As we go further down the list. Kenta Gallagher one of the

:02:37.:02:42.

36 riders taking part in the men's cross-country mountain biking. We

:02:43.:03:24.

see the South African, the two Canadian riders, Grant Ferguson of

:03:25.:03:31.

Scotland on the second line, with Paul Oldham of England. The two

:03:32.:03:42.

Australian rioters, camera and cat Mac ivory and Andy Blair making up

:03:43.:03:45.

the second line. Mac ivory and Andy Blair making up

:03:46.:03:49.

the second Realistically it is likely to come from the first two

:03:50.:03:55.

lines, where you will find your winner. -- Cameron Ivory. There is

:03:56.:04:21.

the defending champion, Killeen. Remember, we have the 800 metres

:04:22.:04:25.

loop to try and spread the riders out before we set to only seven laps

:04:26.:04:37.

of the race. We kid really see a competitive race here. -- we could.

:04:38.:04:46.

I am very excited about the mountain bike race, I walked around the

:04:47.:04:50.

course yesterday, there are a lot of technical sections, they say it is

:04:51.:04:56.

not one the most difficult, but we found it technical. It was technical

:04:57.:05:02.

enough for us in our trainers, such is

:05:03.:05:03.

enough for us in our trainers, such the high level of these riders.

:05:04.:05:07.

Daniel McDonnell is ranked number four in the world rankings. The wind

:05:08.:05:16.

is whipping around our commentary position. I had to do a flying save

:05:17.:05:24.

just to keep my notes in place. After around half a lap, you tend to

:05:25.:05:31.

get, what we will see for the remainder of the race. That is the

:05:32.:05:36.

South African rider, number three, leading the way from the New

:05:37.:05:45.

Zealander, Cooper. Very important to get off the start line into

:05:46.:05:49.

position, they only had a short section before it goes into

:05:50.:06:06.

single-track. Byers, the South African, he is the African champion,

:06:07.:06:18.

very tall, six foot, two. We are on the big circuit now. The first big

:06:19.:06:27.

drops appear when we get towards Propeller Point, the feeding

:06:28.:06:32.

station. Not significant on the first lap, it will as time goes on.

:06:33.:06:39.

You can see how narrow the track is, not too many places to get past your

:06:40.:06:45.

competitors. Most of the overtaking happens on the climbs. The

:06:46.:06:49.

significance of the course, they have sections with two or three

:06:50.:06:54.

options, one being more technical than others. This is the first

:06:55.:07:00.

drop-down. The camera does not do it justice. It is quite steep. The

:07:01.:07:06.

first technical section we walked over, thinking it was speak. When we

:07:07.:07:17.

got round to Braveheart, we thought that was just a starting point. The

:07:18.:07:24.

South African, Byers leading the way from Cooper, the New Zealander, and

:07:25.:07:39.

Plaxton, the Canadian in third. The Canadians have a great record in

:07:40.:07:45.

cross-country mountain biking. They won the first-ever gold in

:07:46.:07:47.

Manchester at the Commonwealth Games. It was the English dominating

:07:48.:07:56.

four years later, with Killeen and Beckett. The wonderful views of the

:07:57.:08:05.

city of Glasgow, the riders not yet half way round, but the field

:08:06.:08:13.

beginning to spread out. McDonnell, one of the prerace favourites in

:08:14.:08:26.

fifth place. Killeen down in ninth. This is the leader, Buys, 53rd in

:08:27.:08:31.

the World Championships last September. Very much hoping to be in

:08:32.:08:36.

the mix-up when it comes to the medals here. Already they have made

:08:37.:08:50.

it down to your favourite section, Double Der. This is a thrilling

:08:51.:08:55.

section, I would love to ride this myself. They tend to crossover. One

:08:56.:09:02.

of the New Zealanders, the Australian. A popular place for

:09:03.:09:09.

crossing over. Still Buys leading the way, as we stand. Cooper taking

:09:10.:09:20.

some water on board already. Just sitting behind the leader. Plaxton

:09:21.:09:30.

in there. Those are your leaders. Five riders who seem to have broken

:09:31.:09:37.

away. Daniel McConnell, the Australian is one of them.

:09:38.:09:44.

28-year-old from Melbourne, competing at the 2008 Olympics in

:09:45.:09:51.

Beijing, the highest ranked rider in the field. Buys has made a good

:09:52.:10:02.

start, holding onto the lead. Seven riders staying in touch of the

:10:03.:10:07.

leading group. Coming into today, Daniel McConnell one of the

:10:08.:10:14.

favourites alongside Killeen, they should be some of the riders in

:10:15.:10:19.

their once they sort it all out. These riders have broken away from

:10:20.:10:23.

the rest of the pellets on. I am not sure I can see Killeen in there,

:10:24.:10:31.

that group of seven riders. We are led to believe he is in ninth place,

:10:32.:10:36.

the defending champion from eight years ago. Dominating the

:10:37.:10:44.

cross-country scene between 2008-2012 before losing to Grant

:10:45.:10:50.

Ferguson here in 2013. There has been a big question mark over the

:10:51.:10:58.

form of Liam Killeen. The two New Zealand riders going quite well.

:10:59.:11:04.

Cooper is up there, Buys, there is number nine, Liam Killeen. No, that

:11:05.:11:12.

is Paul Oldham. Killeen is wearing number one. Paul Oldham ranked 119,

:11:13.:11:24.

36 years of age. He was for one year ago at the British Championships.

:11:25.:11:30.

That is not necessarily a significant advantage for the

:11:31.:11:34.

British riders, this course is very different from one year ago.

:11:35.:11:39.

Australian riders going through hair. That was Andy Blair, and

:11:40.:11:46.

Cameron Ivory. That is interesting, this is the

:11:47.:11:59.

Queen Mary Drop, the majority taking the tough inside route. It is the

:12:00.:12:05.

top circular bit that is really difficult. That is the tricky part

:12:06.:12:12.

of the three options. If you start from the top, the middle looks too

:12:13.:12:17.

difficult to navigate. Once you get past the first section, the middle

:12:18.:12:23.

section is easier. We have seen riders taking the inside line, the

:12:24.:12:26.

shortest line, perhaps the most difficult. It has developed into a

:12:27.:12:35.

pretty tight race, plenty of riders in contention at the front from the

:12:36.:12:37.

first couple of lines. Buys getting off to a terrific

:12:38.:13:03.

start. This is Cooper and Gayes, now leading the way.

:13:04.:13:15.

start. This is Cooper and Gayes, now from New Zealand, Buys from South

:13:16.:13:18.

Africa slipping into third. A significant move from the Kiwis?

:13:19.:13:24.

They are sticking together riding quite comfortably, getting a lead.

:13:25.:13:28.

Applying pressure at the start of the race, interesting tactic, it is

:13:29.:13:38.

a long race. Going quite hard. Philip Buys made a fabulous start,

:13:39.:13:43.

the two New Zealanders can work together. There were seven riders in

:13:44.:13:51.

the leading group, the New Zealanders have accelerated away

:13:52.:13:57.

from nowhere. Opening up a significant gap between themselves

:13:58.:13:59.

and Philip Buys, leading the chasing pack. New Zealand and nation who

:14:00.:14:07.

have never medals before in the men's cross-country mountain

:14:08.:14:12.

biking, only Canada and England have won medals. This could be a

:14:13.:14:17.

significant move for the New Zealanders. This is the key moment,

:14:18.:14:23.

Philip Buys leading the way, this is where the New Zealand pair came

:14:24.:14:31.

through. Cooper and Gayes. He tried to respond, Buys. He gets taken by

:14:32.:14:39.

the second rider as well. I'm able to respond, Cooper coming through

:14:40.:14:49.

and taking advantage. The eight senior roles, Gayes, looking in

:14:50.:14:56.

control, setting the pace. New Zealand mean business here. It has

:14:57.:15:06.

been a really bright start from the New Zealanders, Cooper and Gayes.

:15:07.:15:14.

Two seconds between them and the second group,.

:15:15.:15:26.

Interesting to see if this is a tactic from the New Zealanders,

:15:27.:15:44.

Cooper ranked 28, and Gayes 31st. It was not a good start for the

:15:45.:15:47.

defending gold medal champion, Killeen. The set African, Buys

:15:48.:15:56.

getting off to a great start. The two New Zealanders have since gone

:15:57.:16:00.

past them. It is surprising how much ground you can lose getting a slow

:16:01.:16:06.

start. Killeen did not get going. It was a different start, interesting

:16:07.:16:13.

to see if he makes his way back up to the leaders. The New Zealanders

:16:14.:16:19.

are applying pressure. They are coming through to Brigadoon, over to

:16:20.:16:28.

Balderdash. It gets more technical to the Queen Mary Drop. For. This is

:16:29.:16:43.

the leader, the Kiwi rider, Samuel Gaze, just 18, ranked 78th. Does a

:16:44.:16:53.

lot of his trading on a road bike, that is interesting. First place at

:16:54.:17:02.

the World Cup in Cairns. Interesting how the cardio crossover can work

:17:03.:17:07.

between road and mountain bikes. We have seen a lot of good mountain

:17:08.:17:14.

bikers train on the road. Very hard. There is no time for rest on this

:17:15.:17:18.

course, it took us about three hours. I think the men will do it in

:17:19.:17:24.

about 40 minutes. We checked out all the technical parts of the course.

:17:25.:17:28.

Watching some of these athletes picking their lines, stopping to

:17:29.:17:34.

discuss the best lines to take. Their equipment and where they will

:17:35.:17:38.

apply the pressure. The New Zealanders have gone out hard,

:17:39.:17:43.

looking comfortable, in control. Two riders who made the switch from

:17:44.:17:49.

mountain and road biking, Cadel Evans and Chris Frome. He took part

:17:50.:17:57.

in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, finishing 26, representing Ken yet.

:17:58.:18:11.

Now a Tour de France winner. -- ten. He won five races at three levels in

:18:12.:18:18.

2014, the World Cup when, that I was talking about in Cairns, that was

:18:19.:18:23.

the highlight for him. He may be a teenager but he has shown

:18:24.:18:24.

significant teenager but he has shown

:18:25.:18:28.

World Cup and international level. Leading the way here. He has really

:18:29.:18:35.

run down the two New Zealanders and the Canadian has got himself right

:18:36.:18:38.

back into contention in the leading group of three. He looks comfortable

:18:39.:18:43.

sitting on the back of the New Zealanders, there. We saw him taking

:18:44.:18:48.

a drink, he is thinking about later in the race, it is important to get

:18:49.:18:54.

fluid on board early. Lots of people wait until they are thirsty but it

:18:55.:18:58.

is important to get in the fluid early in the race when you are

:18:59.:19:04.

thinking about the business end. Gaze and Cooper from New Zealand and

:19:05.:19:09.

the Canadian in there as well. He is ranked 51 in the world, 29 years of

:19:10.:19:15.

age. He Sykes himself up by listening to iron maiden before

:19:16.:19:21.

every race. He cites Wayne Gretzky as his sporting hero. He was third

:19:22.:19:26.

at the Canadian championships last year. He has taken the lead from the

:19:27.:19:29.

New Zealanders as we crossed the finish for the first time. He has a

:19:30.:19:34.

strong track record in the mountain bike events. The second group coming

:19:35.:19:46.

in behind. Montgomery and Ferguson getting a big cheer, the Scottish

:19:47.:19:50.

riders. Philip Buys has dropped into sixth place. Killeen knows that he

:19:51.:20:00.

has a lot of work to do to get himself onto the podium from third

:20:01.:20:06.

successive Commonwealth Games. -- for a third. So, the first lab has

:20:07.:20:16.

been completed, those are the top 12. Plaxton has ruined the party for

:20:17.:20:25.

the Kiwis. Their game plan was to get a significant gap. We can see

:20:26.:20:31.

the three behind the leading three, Scottish riders and the Australian,

:20:32.:20:35.

closing the gap. We may see a group of six coming together in a moment.

:20:36.:20:42.

Down towards Propeller Point, the first significant drop on the

:20:43.:20:49.

course. The wind is whipping up around the commentary position and I

:20:50.:20:53.

can feel some spots of rain again which could make it more interesting

:20:54.:21:02.

given the amount of slee the areas on the course, particularly on Queen

:21:03.:21:05.

Mary's Drop, dropping from cobbles onto cobbles. Plaxton Cooper and

:21:06.:21:15.

Gaze are the front three. The weather has taken a turn for the

:21:16.:21:20.

worse. The trees are nearly blowing over. The bad weather is rolling in

:21:21.:21:24.

with black clouds everywhere, we could see heavy rain on the way.

:21:25.:21:30.

Cooper in front from Plaxton and Gaze is in third. Liam Killeen at

:21:31.:21:42.

the moment is nowhere to be seen, the English rider who got a podium

:21:43.:21:52.

in 2002 and 2006. A bronze and gold. There is now a significant gap.

:21:53.:21:57.

Plaxton is fending off the challenge of the two New Zealanders, Cooper

:21:58.:22:01.

and Gaze, they are looking to get a medal for the first time in

:22:02.:22:04.

cross-country mountain biking for New Zealand at the Commonwealth

:22:05.:22:09.

Games. These three riders are taking turns to take on the head of the

:22:10.:22:14.

group. Anton Cooper out in front for New Zealand, setting the pace. He

:22:15.:22:18.

has had a disrupted year with illness. He rides for Cannondale

:22:19.:22:25.

factory racing. Only 19 years of age. This is my favourite section of

:22:26.:22:42.

the course. Plaxton edging off Gaze at the moment. Cooper is in the

:22:43.:22:48.

lead. If this weather continues it is going to get significantly slippy

:22:49.:22:56.

out there. You can see the aerial view of the Double Dare, hitting the

:22:57.:23:00.

flat section. You can get a beautiful view of the City from this

:23:01.:23:06.

section of the course. Glasgow City. Terrible news for the Northern Irish

:23:07.:23:13.

today, Aitken has picked up a puncture going down Braveheart.

:23:14.:23:18.

Roger Aitken as a puncture. And I can tell you that there is an awful

:23:19.:23:23.

long way to go to the maintenance area. It is a front flat tyre for

:23:24.:23:33.

Aitken. That is really bad luck for the rider from Northern Ireland. It

:23:34.:23:40.

is bad enough trying to drag a rear flat around but it is significantly

:23:41.:23:44.

harder to control the bike when the front is flat as a pancake which it

:23:45.:23:49.

is therefore Aitken. The first real mechanical problem we have seen for

:23:50.:23:51.

any of the riders on the mechanical problem we have seen for

:23:52.:23:54.

you can see that visibility is getting much less now as the weather

:23:55.:24:05.

draws in. -- for. The wind is certainly blowing, the tents are

:24:06.:24:08.

blowing over everywhere. It is getting more challenging to the

:24:09.:24:16.

competitors. -- for the competitors. Some of the spectators are

:24:17.:24:18.

desperately trying to use their umbrellas for shelter. Yesterday it

:24:19.:24:24.

was a glorious day in Glasgow, I am sure that one or two of the locals

:24:25.:24:28.

will agree that this is a return to the normal weather conditions. There

:24:29.:24:31.

is always a danger of course of this taking place. The riders will have

:24:32.:24:37.

to cope with it of course, the wind and rain, in those segments where

:24:38.:24:41.

the wind is a headwind, it will make it significantly tougher. This is

:24:42.:24:53.

Plaxton who is still leading the way, the Canadian. You can see from

:24:54.:24:58.

the camera, the way that the weather is really causing problems. The

:24:59.:25:03.

Australian Dan McConnell is making his way back to the leaders. Not a

:25:04.:25:11.

great start but he is still one of the favourites in this rates. He is

:25:12.:25:14.

still one of the favourites in this rates. He's working his way back

:25:15.:25:21.

into contention. The Scottish rider wearing 16, Gareth Montgomerie, he

:25:22.:25:25.

attempted to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in road cycling

:25:26.:25:29.

because mountain biking was not part of it. This is where it can get

:25:30.:25:33.

sketchy, the cobbles. The leaders are making short work of that. The

:25:34.:25:39.

three leaders took the inside, the most technical option on the Queen

:25:40.:25:45.

Mary's Drop. The Australian took the safest way around. If he is on

:25:46.:25:50.

format the Commonwealth Games he may be able to close the gap to get

:25:51.:25:58.

among the race. It is taking a gamble to drop down on the cobbles

:25:59.:26:02.

in these conditions but McConnell is now chasing down the group and the

:26:03.:26:06.

gap is getting smaller. It looks as though he will get onto the back of

:26:07.:26:10.

the group of three by the end of the lap. Yes, there is the gap that you

:26:11.:26:18.

can see, it still looks like a sizeable one but it is significantly

:26:19.:26:21.

smaller than it was a few moments ago. Plaxton the Canadian is

:26:22.:26:40.

leading. And the two New Zealanders. Plaxton is leading. The New

:26:41.:26:45.

Zealanders, though, are chasing him down. They can work together here

:26:46.:26:53.

just to try to beat Plaxton, they will be eyeing up a potential

:26:54.:27:02.

one-two. Plaxton will be looking to keep that tremendous Canadian record

:27:03.:27:11.

intact. Roman Green of Canada when the first ever mountain bike medal

:27:12.:27:15.

in 2002. The Canadian women have won the gold medal every time. When we

:27:16.:27:22.

were out on the course yesterday we thought that some of the technical

:27:23.:27:26.

parts were really nail-biting. And very difficult sections. But on the

:27:27.:27:33.

world mountain bike level, this is quite an easy course. I do not think

:27:34.:27:37.

easy is the word to describe it but it is more of a road riders type of

:27:38.:27:44.

course. The technical parts are not as challenging as some of them. The

:27:45.:27:50.

course of course was designed by one of the UCI's designers of courses.

:27:51.:27:56.

That is his full-time job. He travels around the world to design

:27:57.:28:00.

the courses. Lots of people are very happy with the circuit. It is up and

:28:01.:28:07.

down the whole time. A beautiful location on the side of a mountain

:28:08.:28:13.

which looks down on Glasgow City. Plaxton is leading the way. He is

:28:14.:28:17.

just ahead of the New Zealand Cooper and you can see he is riding on the

:28:18.:28:24.

lefty front fork. It always gets a few special locks. It is designed to

:28:25.:28:28.

keep the weight down. A single front fork. It has been described by some

:28:29.:28:36.

riders as the best suspension they have ever made. Speaking to some of

:28:37.:28:43.

the mechanics before the race, they were talking about Dan McConnell's

:28:44.:28:47.

bike, saying that he is one of the few using electronic gears. There

:28:48.:28:52.

may be more but we were told that he was one of the few that chooses to

:28:53.:28:55.

ride on the new electronic gears. By Shimano. It is amazing how the

:28:56.:29:02.

mechanics of bikes are beginning to change, disc brakes on road bikes

:29:03.:29:06.

:29:26.:29:29.

of the Canadian Plaxton and the two New Zealanders. That is William

:30:01.:30:09.

looks to be struggling. Absolutely, we saw a moment ago that the leading

:30:10.:30:13.

riders were coming through. Aitken had a front puncture but he is back

up and running. The rider from Northern Ireland. This is the

leading group, Max Plaxton is leading the way, looking to win the

:30:29.:30:32.

gold medal for Canada. The Englishman won eight years ago.

:30:33.:30:35.

Canada are returning with a vengeance, trying to get back the

:30:36.:30:41.

gold again. They feel as though they belong on top of the podium when it

:30:42.:30:45.

comes to mountain biking either in the men's or women's discipline. He

:30:46.:30:48.

is opening up a slight gap now from Cooper and Gaze. He is flying, they

:30:49.:30:55.

are definitely picking up the pace, trying to split it up and get away

:30:56.:31:01.

so they can beat Dan McConnell but he has made his way back to the

:31:02.:31:05.

three. After a slow start he is now back in the race for the gold medal.

:31:06.:31:10.

He has won three races this year in the Australian season. He has good

:31:11.:31:16.

form coming into this event. 42nd, disappointing finish in the World

he won the OCR near championships in March. -- OCR

:31:27.:31:34.

Plenty of time still to come. It looks as though McConnell is gaining

by the second. We are looking at the man in sixth position. One of the

local riders, Gareth Montgomerie. The 31-year-old. He began riding at

the age of ten after a family day out on a hired mountain bike. It is

:31:57.:32:00.

amazing how many stories are the same for the riders and how they

:32:01.:32:05.

took up the sport. There are the four leaders. Max Plaxton and the

New Zealanders, and McConnell. Four riders here of course.

Plaxton down and forth now, but very little gap. It cheers as the

:33:42.:33:47.

Scottish rider, Grant Ferguson comes through. 20 years of age, winning

:33:48.:33:53.

the British cross-country Championships in July last year,

:33:54.:34:01.

retaining the champion in Shropshire. He beat Liam Killeen,

:34:02.:34:13.

who hasn't really featured here. Down in seventh place, work to do.

:34:14.:34:19.

There are many question marks over his former, he has been at the top

:34:20.:34:25.

of the game in mountain biking, this year we have not seen much from

:34:26.:34:30.

him, a question mark over his form coming into the Commonwealth Games.

:34:31.:34:38.

The New Zealanders are in fine form, they have come here with a strong

:34:39.:34:44.

team. You saw him pretty close up, he almost clipped you out training.

:34:45.:34:50.

I was looking the wrong way, studying the course, and he was

:34:51.:34:59.

heading towards me at a real pace. I had to hug a tree, he just clipped

:35:00.:35:01.

my shoulder. This is a tricky little climb. Up

:35:02.:38:48.

towards the River Clyde Climb. Magnificent views over Glasgow,

thankfully with the rain easing we are able to see significantly more

of. Plaxton has to be careful he does not fall too far off the pace.

:39:02.:39:08.

We come to Queen Mary's Drop. McConnell taking the outside line,

:39:09.:39:13.

still keeping a significant lead from the two New Zealanders will

:39:14.:39:20.

stop they both take the inside line. That is interesting, how much

:39:21.:39:22.

quicker the inside line was. They were not able to pass Dan McConnell.

:39:23.:39:31.

That is one of the more technical sections in the whole course will --

:39:32.:39:38.

course. The slightly more safe option. Perhaps it does not take

:39:39.:39:44.

that much longer, and you can get more speed to keep your momentum.

:39:45.:39:50.

Again the camera does not really do it justice. When you look down from

:39:51.:39:57.

the top, you think, I really don't want to falloff on that surface, it

:39:58.:40:04.

will hurt. One athlete did come down yesterday, it did look difficult.

:40:05.:40:09.

They seem to be riding down with no troubles today though, looking like

it is quite easy for them. McConnell leading the way, the 28-year-old

climbs and technical parts have been a real struggle for some riders.

Very early to be having a bit of pain in the back. Could be causing a

lack of power output. Getting dropped off this bunch. Early in the

race to be having discomfort in your lower back. Coming to the halfway

mark, that back pain bad news for the Kiwi, could be good news for

Grant Ferguson, trying to chase down the leading pack. He was some 50

seconds at the last time check. These four sticking together. At the

moment it is Gaze leaving. Plaxton sitting in fourth place. McConnell

rest. Just taking a drink, I am quite amazed how much they drink in

they are going crazy Eddie goes past the start and finish line. Plenty of

:48:28.:48:38.

support for him and Montgomerie. In terms of time they are way off the

:48:39.:48:44.

leading group of the Australian, the Canadian and the two New Zealanders.

:48:45.:48:46.

They are looking to dominate the race. Three and a bit laps have been

:48:47.:48:53.

done so far. There is still an awful long way to go for these four

:48:54.:48:56.

riders. There is plenty that can happen. In cross-country mountain

:48:57.:49:02.

biking in terms of the variables, a mistake, concentration, and

mechanical issues. We were amazed to hear the rules of the mechanical

mishaps, when you pass the mechanical station, there is only

one on the course, if you have passed it you need to continue with

your problem around the course until you can get mechanical assistance

:49:28.:49:31.

but if you pass the tent, you cannot turn around and go back. A

:49:32.:49:38.

retirement for the Kenyan man. We have seen one or two of the lower

:49:39.:49:42.

ranked riders struggling. The race is over for Kabiro who has fallen

:49:43.:49:54.

foul of the 80% time rule. It is harsh on the lower ranked riders.

:49:55.:50:03.

They cannot afford to have a lapping situation which could cause problems

:50:04.:50:10.

for the leading riders. They are on Double Dare, the section of the

:50:11.:50:13.

course where the design of the circuit has designed this part of

:50:14.:50:17.

the course, so there are two lanes that you can take, both of equal

:50:18.:50:23.

speed. He has designed it to make them equal speed all the way to the

:50:24.:50:27.

bottom. They will have an opportunity to pass each other. We

:50:28.:50:30.

have not seen much passing on that particular. We have a significant

:50:31.:50:37.

gap between the leading two. Plaxton, the Canadian, was in fourth

:50:38.:50:41.

place for the majority of the previous lap and a half but he has

:50:42.:50:46.

certainly taken up the pace. Here is Ferguson of Scotland. A great

:50:47.:50:52.

incentive of him to keep going matter how tired he feels, the

:50:53.:50:55.

adrenaline will kick in when he hears the roar of the home support.

:50:56.:51:03.

He has had a good couple of years domestically in terms of the British

:51:04.:51:09.

cross-country Championships, Liam Carling who has been the dominant

:51:10.:51:13.

force in British cross-country. He is ahead of the British rider but

:51:14.:51:17.

still a long way off the leading four. The hopes for Scotland are

:51:18.:51:27.

fading, but if Ferguson and Montgomery can stay in there and

:51:28.:51:30.

there is a mishap among the leading group then you never know because

:51:31.:51:33.

there is a long way to go. Just over half way around the course. There is

:51:34.:51:39.

Gareth Montgomerie, the team-mate of Ferguson. 31 years of age. And there

:51:40.:51:55.

is Paul Oldham, the English rider, the 36-year-old from Burnley. He

:51:56.:51:59.

made the podium at the British cross-country Championships ten days

:52:00.:52:04.

ago, he rides for Hove factory racing. He has agonising memories of

:52:05.:52:12.

Cathkin Braes. Just missing out at the British championships before

:52:13.:52:14.

going one better and we can half ago. Plaxton is still on the front

:52:15.:52:20.

of the leading four, driving the pace. He raced into thousand ace --

:52:21.:52:30.

in 2008. He could not finish the race because of a knee injury. He

:52:31.:52:33.

looks quite comfortable the front today. He has completed the majority

:52:34.:52:40.

of this lap on the front. Plaxton from Cooper. Gaze very much attached

:52:41.:52:52.

to the leading four. It must be motivating to the New Zealanders do

:52:53.:52:57.

have two of them there, always do have a team-mate to communicate with

:52:58.:53:00.

and motivate each other. Obviously they have spent some time together

:53:01.:53:04.

so they know each other's capabilities. It must be quite

:53:05.:53:06.

comforting to have your team-mate there. McConnell does not fancy

:53:07.:53:13.

that, he has gone on the outside every time. He has edged into third

:53:14.:53:22.

ahead of the New Zealander Gaze. Now Plaxton. It is interesting, there is

:53:23.:53:31.

three choices but we rarely see anyone take the bigger one. When you

:53:32.:53:36.

come to the entry of the three options, it is very difficult and it

:53:37.:53:41.

gets easier after the first bit. In the middle one. But it is quite

:53:42.:53:44.

intimidating when you are approaching it. You can see how

:53:45.:53:48.

rough the middle option is and nobody likes to take it. It is just

:53:49.:53:52.

too dangerous. You lose your momentum at the start of the drop.

:53:53.:53:56.

On the inside you have the cobbles and on the cobbles it is the

:53:57.:54:02.

quickest, shortest route, but it is potentially more dangerous than

:54:03.:54:05.

going on the outside route which done McConnell has taken every lap.

:54:06.:54:15.

It has not done him any harm because he is right in there, McConnell.

:54:16.:54:20.

This is turning into an interesting race, if they can stay together for

:54:21.:54:24.

the final lap this could be one of the most memorable mountain bike

:54:25.:54:34.

races in the Commonwealth Games. The smallest winning margin in the

:54:35.:54:37.

Commonwealth Games mountain bike race is 15 seconds when Ollie

:54:38.:54:43.

Beckinsale was beaten into thousand six. -- in 2006. These riders will

:54:44.:54:54.

probably wait until towards the end of the final lap to make a

:54:55.:54:59.

significant move on the other three. Here is Plaxton putting in most of

:55:00.:55:02.

the work at the moment, leading them through with Cooper in second place,

:55:03.:55:06.

McConnell in third and Gaze in fourth. There could be a bit of

:55:07.:55:12.

bluffing with the facial expressions here as well, they

:55:13.:55:15.

bluffing with the facial expressions to think they are suffering or not

being so comfortable. to think they are suffering or not

:55:21.:55:23.

happen at any moment, these are the to think they are suffering or not

:55:24.:55:31.

four that are in with a chance. Plaxton is leading them through

:55:32.:55:32.

coming you can see how close they are in the wooded area. They are

:55:33.:55:41.

taking turns at the front of the group. Plaxton is getting out of the

:55:42.:55:45.

saddle for a second to increase the cadence as he went through. Of

:55:46.:55:51.

course a lot of mountain biking is to do with the significant cadence

:55:52.:56:00.

on those climbs to get the bike up there. This is Ferguson of

:56:01.:56:04.

Scotland, the best of the rest at the moment outside of the leading

:56:05.:56:09.

four. Scotland are one of the countries that have started this

:56:10.:56:13.

race with three men. That is the maximum capacity that you can have

:56:14.:56:19.

in a mountain bike race. Along with the countries Kenya, Jersey and

:56:20.:56:23.

Australia. Those are the four countries that have entered three

:56:24.:56:27.

and that is the maximum number. All of the other countries have two or

:56:28.:56:39.

one rider representing them. The gap between Samuel Gaze and Grant

:56:40.:56:42.

Ferguson is significant. Around one minute at the last time split. They

:56:43.:56:58.

have gone past the food section. Khumalo from Swaziland was

:56:59.:57:01.

struggling, we saw him being signalled off the track because he

:57:02.:57:07.

was below the 80% which is allowed. He is the rider that is off course.

:57:08.:57:12.

The problem here as well, is that the Kenyan rider came off the

:57:13.:57:20.

pedals. Causing a problem for the rider behind him and he clearly does

:57:21.:57:24.

seem to be struggling, the Kenyan rider. I am no doubt -- I have no

:57:25.:57:34.

doubt we will see him called off the race. That is what we have seen.

:57:35.:57:43.

Plaxton from Cooper and McConnell and Gaze. That is the leading group.

:57:44.:57:50.

They are cheering Ferguson, the Scottish rider in fifth place. One

:57:51.:57:58.

minute and 25 seconds off the pace from Plaxton. The gap is getting

:57:59.:58:02.

bigger between the leading four and the chasing Ferguson. These four are

:58:03.:58:08.

potentially in the medals, gold, silver and bronze. It is still a

:58:09.:58:14.

long way to the finish, but you suspect as we did before the race

:58:15.:58:18.

started that these four will be in contention. Plaxton has spent a lot

:58:19.:58:28.

of time out in front. Yes, back in fourth place for the large majority

:58:29.:58:33.

of the second and third laps but he is setting the pace here now. Really

:58:34.:58:39.

testing Gaze, McConnell and Cooper. The riders who are with him. Seeing

:58:40.:58:43.

what they have left in the tank. As they make a tight turn around the

:58:44.:58:53.

tree towards the Brig O'Doom. And of course there is Boulder Dash still

:58:54.:58:55.

to come. For riders course there is Boulder Dash still

it is a straightforward role through on those 29 inch tyres. -- roll

:58:59.:59:11.

through. Plaxton, then, from Cooper. Done McConnell just taking a drink

:59:12.:59:23.

there. -- Daniel McConnell. Paul Oldham, the English rider. Going

:59:24.:59:28.

through on Broken Biscuits. He has fallen off the course. He has to

:59:29.:59:33.

re-enter exactly where he fell out. Again, a flat section in terms of

:59:34.:59:37.

gradient but the Broken Biscuits can cause all kinds of problems.

:59:38.:59:43.

Thankfully no broken limbs so far. It is a difficult part of the

:59:44.:59:47.

circuit, lots of the riders are trying to pick their lines but it is

:59:48.:59:50.

one of those things where you have do hope that the best because there

:59:51.:59:54.

is no good line with rocks all over the place and there is no little

:59:55.:59:59.

break to find a smooth run through. And of course the pace of these

:00:00.:00:07.

riders, heading in around 23 K pH, and if you get anything wrong at

:00:08.:00:12.

that pace you are going to hit the deck. Thankfully the 26 old Paul

:00:13.:00:17.

Oldham was OK. The four leading riders are changing position,

:00:18.:00:20.

different riders having some time out in front. Plaxton just robbing

:00:21.:00:26.

back to fourth place now. No doubt there is a discussion going on as

:00:27.:00:32.

can happen on the road. Plaxton saying, somebody else give it a go.

:00:33.:00:37.

That is what Cooper has done. Anton Cooper from Christchurch in New

:00:38.:00:41.

Zealand. Taking the lead. The under-19s world champion in 2012 in

:00:42.:00:49.

Australia, the New Zealand mountain biker of the year in 2012. Still

:00:50.:00:53.

only 19. A great future ahead of him. A great future ahead of him to

:00:54.:00:58.

claim the gold medal in the cross-country mountain biking. Gaze

:00:59.:01:06.

taking them across the line with three laps to go. 23 kilometres per

:01:07.:01:11.

hour, the average speed of these riders as we approach the hour mark.

:01:12.:01:17.

As they came across the start finish line we saw Gaze pouring water down

:01:18.:01:22.

his back and front. It does not feel to world where we are sitting but

:01:23.:01:25.

perhaps he wants to keep his core temperature cooled to use less

:01:26.:01:33.

energy to go himself down. He has been feeling the heat out there. A

:01:34.:01:40.

bit of a battle going on with the elements, some of the sunshine is

:01:41.:01:43.

trying to break through the significant grey cloud up above,

:01:44.:01:46.

let's hope that the sunshine wins the day. At the moment this is the

:01:47.:01:51.

leading four. Certainly the rain has gone off now, the drizzle which was

:01:52.:01:54.

threatening to make it awfully difficult in those rocky segments

:01:55.:01:58.

for these riders. Given the wind conditions when we have a slight

:01:59.:02:02.

smattering of rain it dries out pretty quickly as you can see from

:02:03.:02:08.

the dust that is being thrown up. The leading four, this is developing

:02:09.:02:11.

into a terrific race. It is a long way back to fifth placed Grant

:02:12.:02:15.

Ferguson, the 20-year-old Scottish rider. Ranked 69 in the UCI world

:02:16.:02:22.

rankings, heading towards the start finish line. It is a terrific

:02:23.:02:32.

atmosphere, here, where the majority of the spectators are placed. Extra

:02:33.:02:42.

bit of gusto when they're wearing the blue and white of Scotland. It

:02:43.:02:52.

has been a day to forget for Liam Killeen, do take a miracle for the

:02:53.:02:58.

32-year-old English rider to get a medal this time. -- it will take. He

:02:59.:03:05.

was looking for his third successive medal. He was not on the original

:03:06.:03:12.

build-up start list, a rather late entry, we were surprised to see him

:03:13.:03:19.

on the list. A big-name, and very late entry. He has only raced three

:03:20.:03:28.

races since 2012, and the Olympics. He has not really got the racing in

:03:29.:03:32.

his legs. Perhaps this is the start of his preparation for Rio. There

:03:33.:03:40.

was talk about him claiming a third medal, but privately he must've

:03:41.:03:47.

realised he will not in contention. That often happens when athletes

:03:48.:03:52.

know what their body has been through, the general public are not

:03:53.:04:00.

aware of what they go through, so they don't have a realistic

:04:01.:04:04.

expectation. He may be happy with his performance, and the start of

:04:05.:04:09.

his comeback in preparation for the next Olympics. So very much a four

:04:10.:04:18.

man race for gold in the men's cross-country mountain biking.

:04:19.:04:25.

McConnell is back on the front. Had a forgettable World Championships,

:04:26.:04:34.

but his form in Australia has been good. In terms of rankings, he is

:04:35.:04:46.

fourth in the UCI rankings. Just a second between the front four.

:04:47.:04:51.

Ferguson is a minute and a half back. Killeen over two minutes back.

:04:52.:05:02.

Another retirement, Robert Barnes, who took a heavy fall. He was really

:05:03.:05:09.

struggling, mightily disappointed. He is out. The 48-year-old, born in

:05:10.:05:19.

Chelsea, England, competing in the men's's Road race. 48 years old,

:05:20.:05:27.

competing, that is worth a medal in itself. The Scottish rider getting

:05:28.:05:33.

unbelievable support from the local supporters, when he comes past the

:05:34.:05:38.

start line, we get a deafening roar from the crowd. He is sticking with

:05:39.:05:48.

it, he knows there is an almighty gap, and he knows that Killeen may

:05:49.:05:54.

gain from sixth, the experienced rider. As I said at the start, the

:05:55.:06:01.

only rider competing in the men or women's Gracie has previously won a

:06:02.:06:09.

medal, eight years ago. It looks like Plaxton could be in trouble,

:06:10.:06:14.

moving his body over like Plaxton could be in trouble,

:06:15.:06:17.

handlebars, losing a bit of contact from the front three. Perhaps

:06:18.:06:27.

McConnell is lifting the pace? The 20 H Road is the partner of Beth

:06:28.:06:32.

Henderson, one of the stronger riders in the women's event.

:06:33.:06:44.

Australia's mountain biking couple. McConnell has a much higher ranking

:06:45.:06:50.

than any of these riders, Samuel Gaze in 78 place, Plaxton is 51,

:06:51.:07:00.

Cooper is further down, and is an U19 champion. It depends on the

:07:01.:07:06.

number of races they have competed in. Which side will Plaxton take?

:07:07.:07:18.

The inside. He has been dropped, going to have to work hard to close

:07:19.:07:30.

the gap. A touch of hesitancy, a little bit of travel on the front

:07:31.:07:37.

wheel as he decided to go. That hesitancy has cost him a few

:07:38.:07:41.

seconds, work to do, which could beat the Vixens if he uses up excess

:07:42.:07:46.

energy trying to get back on the trail. Could have been a mental

:07:47.:07:51.

lapse of concentration, very difficult to get back. In a section

:07:52.:07:59.

like this, if he was strong enough, he should have been able to make it

:08:00.:08:05.

back. Building up a lot of speed, he may feel he does not get back now,

:08:06.:08:12.

he may not see those riders again. He has certainly upped his cadence

:08:13.:08:19.

levels. I think he is closing the gap. Looking like he has put in a

:08:20.:08:27.

lot of effort, back in the race for the medals. Four very nearly became

:08:28.:08:36.

three, Max Plaxton doing well to work himself back into contention.

:08:37.:08:42.

Looking like he was comfortable, may have been a lapse in concentration.

:08:43.:08:48.

We saw the hesitation at Queen Mary's Drop. Mountain biking unlike

:08:49.:08:58.

road racing, requires 100% concentration the whole time,

:08:59.:09:00.

pressure on the pedals the whole time. Not many very moments in the

:09:01.:09:09.

course to relax. He has just last contact again, physically he may be

:09:10.:09:15.

in trouble. It is OK working hard, but if it takes more out of you...

:09:16.:09:26.

Just out of his seat, stretching his back. Possible he's having back

:09:27.:09:35.

trouble. Still it remains a four horse race, a real danger of it

:09:36.:09:41.

becoming a three horse race, would be agonising for Max Plaxton. The

:09:42.:09:46.

two New Zealanders holding on, they have been there right from the

:09:47.:09:52.

start. McConnell making a significant move after a fairly

:09:53.:09:53.

conservative start. It looks to significant move after a fairly

:09:54.:10:02.

as if Max Plaxton is in trouble. Looking like he's struggling on the

:10:03.:10:09.

technical sections. Maybe he is having a relaxing period, trying to

:10:10.:10:10.

take a few deep breaths. Over the top of the tunnel section,

:10:11.:10:21.

this is where the figure of eight crosses over. McConnell is leading,

:10:22.:10:32.

one hour and six minutes, Cooper and Gaze behind, Max Plaxton further

:10:33.:10:41.

back. Grant Ferguson, the local Scottish rider still holding on to

:10:42.:10:50.

fifth place. Plenty of Saint Andrews flags around the course. When we see

:10:51.:10:58.

those Scottish riders, Ferguson and Montgomery. We saw Killeen trying to

:10:59.:11:09.

chase him down. He may have accepted the medals have gone, but nothing is

:11:10.:11:14.

more inspiring to find extra power in your legs than a rider in front

:11:15.:11:21.

of you. This was Oldham going off, sliding all over the place. He just

:11:22.:11:30.

lost control of his front wheel. This is the rider from jersey, the

:11:31.:11:38.

heaviest crash so far. The bike actually landing on him. The pedals

:11:39.:11:44.

can do some damage. This was Robert Barnes of Jamaica, coming off down

:11:45.:11:52.

Braveheart, he has since retired. He did not fall particularly hard. Do

:11:53.:11:57.

not touch his arms in, rolling onto his back. Barnes can concentrate

:11:58.:12:06.

not touch his arms in, rolling onto the road race on Sunday. We thought

:12:07.:12:09.

they would be a few sketchy moments, and that there has been. We're

:12:10.:12:13.

coming up to the time check. Ferguson is not giving up. Here it

:12:14.:12:25.

is. Taking some air on his back wheel. It is mountain bike can treat

:12:26.:12:33.

in Scotland, Fort William is a World Cup and World Championship downhill

:12:34.:12:43.

venue. This is Max Plaxton. We can see him still in contact with the

:12:44.:12:49.

front three. Seems to be in the most difficulty, but fighting hard to

:12:50.:12:57.

stay in contention for medals. McConnell would be the rider who

:12:58.:13:02.

will have the strength to finish this off, and claim the gold medal.

:13:03.:13:07.

It would be Australia's first in mountain biking at the Commonwealth

:13:08.:13:15.

Games. As we said, he is ranked fourth in the UCI rankings, also

:13:16.:13:21.

second in the World Cup rankings. A pretty decent 2014 so far, I'm sure

:13:22.:13:26.

he will be looking to top it off with a Commonwealth gold. Only

:13:27.:13:36.

Canada and England have won medals in the mountain biking cross-country

:13:37.:13:40.

event in the Commonwealth Games history. It was introduced in

:13:41.:13:48.

Manchester, 2002, repeated in Melbourne, unfortunately never bent

:13:49.:13:59.

in Delhi in 2010. Back here in 2014. This could develop into one of the

:14:00.:14:07.

most memorable races. Killeen saw his countrymen by 15 seconds eight

:14:08.:14:17.

years ago. Here is the Kenyan, his race is over, falling foul of the

:14:18.:14:30.

82nd rule. -- 80 seconds rule. For some it seems like they are just

:14:31.:14:35.

trying to get as far into the race as they could, just testing

:14:36.:14:40.

themselves, he looked like he knew he would be pulled. All the riders

:14:41.:14:49.

looking to take a drink. Some riders can go through ten bottles during a

:14:50.:14:57.

race. You can see Cooper taking on some gel, not always the nicest

:14:58.:15:03.

flavours. Very difficult to eat anything other than the gel. They

:15:04.:15:09.

need to get in the consumption of energy. We can see Plaxton, very

:15:10.:15:16.

often stretching his back out of the seat. They say the lower back in

:15:17.:15:23.

cycling is one of the first things that fatigue is, apart from the

:15:24.:15:34.

legs. -- that fatigues. He is certainly fidgeting around in his

:15:35.:15:40.

seat. Even taking the chance to miss the odd pedal stroke. That does not

:15:41.:15:45.

bode well for him. Still sticking in there. All cyclists have this

:15:46.:15:51.

mentality, persistence overrides resistance. He will be trying to put

:15:52.:15:59.

that pay into the back of his mind. He will be trying to block it out,

:16:00.:16:04.

not think about it. Forget about his back. If the pain becomes a bit too

:16:05.:16:14.

much, hard to forget about it. Seems like he is a bit reluctant on the

:16:15.:16:26.

technical parts, that could be due to the back. We can see the New

:16:27.:16:33.

Zealand rider, his number flapping around in the wind. They still pin

:16:34.:16:43.

these numbers on. It is easy for a couple to fall out. If you are going

:16:44.:16:48.

into your back pocket to get some food. It can be quite annoying to

:16:49.:16:56.

listen to that and feel it flapping around. Even the smallest thing can

:16:57.:17:02.

be really annoying. A lot of discussion about getting these

:17:03.:17:16.

attached. For a rider, if you calculate how much time they spend

:17:17.:17:21.

pinning numbers on, it can be significant. A lot of hours in the

:17:22.:17:33.

season. Killeen in sixth place. Significantly behind Ferguson. The

:17:34.:17:39.

Canadian just behind him in seventh. The story of the men's cross-country

:17:40.:17:47.

is the four lead riders. Quite often in cross-country mountain biking the

:17:48.:17:52.

field can get spread out significantly, they can be a big gap

:17:53.:17:59.

between the top three positions. These four sticking together, this

:18:00.:18:04.

could be one of the most memorable Commonwealth Games races of all

:18:05.:18:30.

time. Down through Double Dare. Almost a collision there between Max

:18:31.:18:38.

Plaxton and Gaze. I think Gaze took a bit of a liberty on Max Plaxton.

:18:39.:18:43.

Still Cooper leading the way for New Zealand. Here are the latest

:18:44.:18:57.

retirements. The race was over. He was another one of the riders who

:18:58.:19:02.

was competing on Sunday. He was fourth at the Lesotho Championships

:19:03.:19:06.

in July of last year and 15th in the African championships. He will be a

:19:07.:19:12.

DNF at the Commonwealth Games. Plaxton in fourth. He is still

:19:13.:19:18.

struggling a bit, on and off the back. Losing a few lengths. It is

:19:19.:19:24.

difficult to understand what is happening but he seems to be OK. He

:19:25.:19:33.

is fighting to keep in contact. It did not help that Gaze cut across

:19:34.:19:37.

him on Double Dare. There was nothing to choose between the riders

:19:38.:19:41.

but the smallest gaps. Plaxton is hanging there for all he's worth.

:19:42.:19:48.

You never know, if he can clear up the pain he seems to be suffering

:19:49.:19:52.

and get a second wind, maybe he can challenge again among the medal

:19:53.:19:56.

positions. The next lap is going to be significant for Plaxton who is

:19:57.:20:00.

using absolutely everything physically and mentally just to tag

:20:01.:20:06.

onto the front three. The Australian done McConnell is trying to get to

:20:07.:20:10.

the front, he wants to be in the lead. -- Daniel McConnell. He cannot

:20:11.:20:16.

get around the New Zealand rider. We got a bit of a close-up on his

:20:17.:20:22.

expression, Plaxton, and it looks as though he is in some sort of pain.

:20:23.:20:30.

Other than the obvious pain that I think is acid build-up in the legs.

:20:31.:20:41.

Cooper on the front. Plaxton is sitting back in fourth place. This

:20:42.:20:50.

will not help him, the only really flat section of the course. Very

:20:51.:20:55.

much at the top, the wonderful views over Glasgow. That gap looks to be

:20:56.:21:05.

getting bigger? He has fought back a gap like that before. There is only

:21:06.:21:09.

so many times you can do it. There we go. The Canadian, Plaxton, often

:21:10.:21:19.

takes the inside, so he is not worrying about the practicalities of

:21:20.:21:23.

that part of the course, taking the shorter most difficult route. He

:21:24.:21:30.

took it much better that time. He lost concentration previously and

:21:31.:21:32.

went down the middle section of that section which no one has taken

:21:33.:21:40.

today. Plaxton in fourth. The gap is growing to the medal positions. He

:21:41.:21:43.

will be aware of that and he is going to have to dig the peer. --

:21:44.:21:52.

dig deep, here. As we get to the business end of the bike race, he is

:21:53.:21:58.

going to have two get back, and he will have trouble, and this could be

:21:59.:22:02.

the end. There will be a point where he gives up because it is too

:22:03.:22:09.

difficult to keep closing the gap. Plaxton really is falling off the

:22:10.:22:12.

front three. It looks like the lead group are catching the tail-enders

:22:13.:22:17.

here which has sensibly pulled over to allow the leaders to go by.

:22:18.:22:22.

Plaxton has not got to the tail yet. This is going to be very hard for

:22:23.:22:27.

Plaxton to take. As he makes his way past James Patterson, the rider from

:22:28.:22:35.

Jersey. Very sensibly he has shifted to one side to allow the leaders

:22:36.:22:40.

through. It is getting tougher and tougher for Plaxton. We could have

:22:41.:22:44.

the rarity here are the Commonwealth Games cross-country mountain biking

:22:45.:22:48.

podium without a Canadian stood on it. That would be a first come

:22:49.:22:54.

podium without a Canadian stood on will definitely be feeling the

:22:55.:22:55.

pressure. He needs to close the gap will definitely be feeling the

:22:56.:22:59.

to get back into a medal position. It is fantastic to see two New

:23:00.:23:03.

Zealanders dominating the race with one Australian Daniel McConnell. He

:23:04.:23:06.

will have to be nervous, having to riders from the same country? -- two

:23:07.:23:14.

riders. A New Zealand sandwich for the Australian. New Zealand have

:23:15.:23:19.

only got two medals before in mountain biking but that was in the

:23:20.:23:24.

women's event in 2002, a silver for Suzy Bride. There has never been a

:23:25.:23:32.

men's medallist from New Zealand in the cross-country mountain biking

:23:33.:23:36.

but that will be about to change, but can McConnell spoil the party to

:23:37.:23:40.

claim top place on the podium? It looks as though Plaxton may have

:23:41.:23:45.

gained a bit of time back again on the front three. Those helicopter

:23:46.:23:49.

shots are significant in giving us a better judgement of how far behind

:23:50.:23:52.

years. He is not out of it completely yet, Plaxton. We saw the

:23:53.:24:02.

New Zealand Gaze looking behind him. It is quite surprising for those

:24:03.:24:06.

three. They are passing another rider over the Broken Biscuits, this

:24:07.:24:12.

is a dangerous section. He may get caught behind here, yes, he is

:24:13.:24:16.

struggling to get past. That is unfortunate for Plaxton. He does not

:24:17.:24:21.

need that additional challenge because he has been riding off the

:24:22.:24:26.

back of these three all day. It is going to cost him a couple of

:24:27.:24:29.

seconds, being caught behind the tail-ender. He is three seconds

:24:30.:24:36.

behind Cooper, the leader. He is splitting the Kiwis, McConnell, in

:24:37.:24:41.

second. I am sure that the tail-enders we have seen going round

:24:42.:24:45.

will probably be pulled off at the end of this lap. You can see the

:24:46.:24:50.

problem is that the lapping riders can cause for the lead group. --

:24:51.:24:59.

problems. Well, each of those three leaders took a drink them. -- then.

:25:00.:25:09.

I am trying to check out the facial expressions but they all have a

:25:10.:25:12.

poker face on, they are giving nothing away, the lead riders. Even

:25:13.:25:17.

Plaxton who we think is physically struggling by the way he has held

:25:18.:25:21.

himself on the bike and the shifting around of his seating position. It

:25:22.:25:27.

would be a surprise if he throughout a heart attack, it seems as though

:25:28.:25:33.

he has been struggling. You can see on the Double Dare that he may have

:25:34.:25:37.

got a bit of motivation and that can happen when you are close to the

:25:38.:25:41.

finish. Plaxton, that was on the previous lap. Close again. He really

:25:42.:25:47.

likes that section. He is back in contention now, he has made contact

:25:48.:25:52.

again, this is an exciting race, when you think he is out of the

:25:53.:25:58.

race, he is back again. He has done really well, Plaxton, after we wrote

:25:59.:26:04.

him off. He is right back in it. That is twice now that Gaze has come

:26:05.:26:08.

across Plaxton on the Double Dare section, the Kiwi likes to change

:26:09.:26:11.

his line whereas Plaxton stays to the outside. I am sure that will not

:26:12.:26:20.

go down well with Plaxton. Here we come up to the final section which

:26:21.:26:34.

was added to the course. Almost an endo. Still trying to stretch his

:26:35.:26:43.

back out. If you get your body position too far forward even on the

:26:44.:26:46.

slightest step down and you could be off your bike. Brig O'Doom, Plaxton

:26:47.:26:57.

is sticking in there. Magnificent work from the Canadian rider. Still

:26:58.:27:04.

it is Cooper from New Zealand who is leading from McConnell and Samuel

:27:05.:27:09.

Gaze. There is nothing in it. The slight gap opens up from Plaxton. He

:27:10.:27:15.

is teasing us! Getting himself back into contention, slipping off and

:27:16.:27:18.

then pulling back. He is still there. He is making it very exciting

:27:19.:27:24.

racing because it is pristine just to win a Commonwealth medal.

:27:25.:27:28.

Everybody is wondering whether the Canadian will be on the podium. My

:27:29.:27:32.

guess is that if he can hang on until he passes the start finish

:27:33.:27:36.

line then he will be able to work through the pain barrier. It is

:27:37.:27:39.

easier when you know you are close to the finish. You start to forget

:27:40.:27:47.

about the pain and you think, if I can do this I can bring home the

:27:48.:27:53.

gold medal for Canada. Once again. This really is developing into a

:27:54.:27:57.

memorable race with four riders in contention for three medals, four

:27:58.:28:01.

into three does not go, somebody is going to be mightily disappointed at

:28:02.:28:08.

the end of this race. You can see the Australian Daniel McConnell, he

:28:09.:28:13.

has a gel strapped to his drinks bottle, he wants to get that in. It

:28:14.:28:20.

is right there. Sometimes it is easier than reaching into your back

:28:21.:28:28.

pocket to get out a gel. McConnell, though, taking up the lead at the

:28:29.:28:35.

moment. Number two from Australia ahead of Cooper and Gaze of New

:28:36.:28:40.

Zealand and Plaxton. These are all riders from the first line at the

:28:41.:28:44.

start. They are in contention. Lapping Ian Crist from Cyprus, one

:28:45.:28:55.

of the tail-enders wearing 17. Another rider who is competing in

:28:56.:29:01.

the road race on Sunday. This is the lead group coming round towards the

:29:02.:29:08.

start finish line. One lap to go. 5.2 kilometres to decide gold,

:29:09.:29:12.

silver and bronze between these four riders. It might be a long time

:29:13.:29:18.

before we see a race this close again. In the cross-country mountain

:29:19.:29:22.

biking at the Commonwealth Games. This is absolutely fantastic stuff.

:29:23.:29:28.

After an hour and 25 minutes of racing, this is extremely close

:29:29.:29:31.

racing. You would have thought we would have seen more attacks, it

:29:32.:29:35.

seems as though the New Zealanders may be having a discussion there.

:29:36.:29:40.

Plaxton is just sitting behind in fourth place. Will they be waiting

:29:41.:29:45.

it out for the sprint, the long uphill sprint towards the finish? Or

:29:46.:29:49.

will somebody make a significant move? The New Zealanders will no

:29:50.:29:54.

doubt try to work together before going for it individually as we get

:29:55.:29:58.

towards the end but the Australian McConnell leads the way and you

:29:59.:30:02.

wonder if the higher ranked rider McConnell will perhaps try to break

:30:03.:30:07.

away at some point. Ahead of these three riders before the final

:30:08.:30:13.

sprint. We would have to expect from what we knew before the race that

:30:14.:30:16.

that would happen from McConnell, being the outstanding favourite. He

:30:17.:30:20.

goes to the front and maybe we will see him applying pressure. The first

:30:21.:30:27.

of the drops on the final lap, past Propeller Point and the final feed

:30:28.:30:32.

station. McConnell is leading from the two New Zealanders, Cooper and

:30:33.:30:39.

Gaze, and Plaxton. They have been shuffling around in terms of who is

:30:40.:30:43.

leading. Plaxton has been in fourth place for quite a while now. But he

:30:44.:30:50.

has closed the significant gap which developed in the previous lap.

:30:51.:30:55.

McConnell is the partner of Henderson, one of the Commonwealth

:30:56.:30:58.

Games contenders in the women's game. A world-class mountain biker.

:30:59.:31:06.

The men's and women's divisions, supporting each other in training,

:31:07.:31:09.

both Australian national champions at cross-country. At the moment we

:31:10.:31:16.

are heading towards a Commonwealth Games podium without the Canadian on

:31:17.:31:20.

it. Unless Plaxton can do something about this. The gap is beginning to

:31:21.:31:26.

build again from the front three to Plaxton. Perhaps he has eased off a

:31:27.:31:34.

bit and will then give it one final push towards the end. The gap

:31:35.:31:38.

between Plaxton and McConnell is significant, if he pulls it back it

:31:39.:31:42.

will be for a minor position and McConnell is opening the gap now

:31:43.:31:46.

between Gaze in second and Cooper in third. The Kiwi riders who are

:31:47.:31:51.

looking to make history to be the first New Zealander to get a medal

:31:52.:31:54.

at the Commonwealth Games mountain biking. All four riders now

:31:55.:32:02.

together. McConnell, though, is holding onto the lead as we come

:32:03.:32:05.

down Double Dare for the last time for these riders.

:32:06.:32:13.

McConnell is leading the way. Plaxton takes the inside route.

:32:14.:32:28.

McConnell goes down. He was not cut up by Samuel Gaze this time. Plaxton

:32:29.:32:32.

has made a move on Double Dare and he has come into second place behind

:32:33.:32:37.

McConnell. It was not long ago that we were writing him off but he is

:32:38.:32:40.

now in second visit in and on the wheel of McConnell. When you get

:32:41.:32:44.

that close to the finish you do not think about your back pain any more

:32:45.:32:47.

and you start thinking about standing on the podium, that will be

:32:48.:32:51.

going through the minds of the riders. Each of them once a gold

:32:52.:33:02.

medal. -- wants it. We expected down McConnell to be on his own, being

:33:03.:33:09.

the clear favourite. Plaxton slipping back down to third. A move

:33:10.:33:13.

on the outside by Gaze. McConnell slipping down into second

:33:14.:33:33.

place. New Zealand first and third, split by McConnell, the Australian.

:33:34.:33:40.

We saw Cooper applying some pressure, out of the seat,

:33:41.:33:46.

sprinting. Daniel McConnell trying to hold the wheel. He is going for

:33:47.:33:54.

it, Cooper, we thought McConnell may make the move, McConnell looking to

:33:55.:34:00.

stick with Cooper. Gaze going as well. It looks as if the pace has

:34:01.:34:06.

got a bit too much for the Canadian, Max Plaxton. The move has not worked

:34:07.:34:13.

for Cooper, McConnell has stuck with him. This could be a magnificent

:34:14.:34:21.

ending to the race. I wonder if that was a team tactic between the New

:34:22.:34:26.

Zealanders, applying pressure to down McConnell, letting him do the

:34:27.:34:34.

hard work. Cooper out of the seat, making it difficult for McConnell.

:34:35.:34:41.

McConnell in second place, Gaze is there. They are climbing up of the

:34:42.:34:54.

Clyde Climb. Going down to Queen Mary's Drop. They have made short

:34:55.:35:00.

work of it all. This is Cooper leading the whale. Claxton has

:35:01.:35:13.

gone, the race is over for him. -- Plaxton. Note -- McConnell still

:35:14.:35:24.

taking no chances, taking the outside line. Something tells me

:35:25.:35:31.

down McConnell is in control, he looked over his shoulder. They have

:35:32.:35:37.

made a move again, coming down Braveheart. Cooper applying the

:35:38.:35:43.

pressure, trying to make it hard for Daniel McConnell. He looks like he

:35:44.:35:49.

is happy in second position, you can keep tabs of both riders. -- he can

:35:50.:36:03.

keep tabs on both riders. These will be three riders on the podium,

:36:04.:36:10.

Cooper, McConnell, Gaze. Max Plaxton the unlucky rider, who has been

:36:11.:36:16.

significantly dropped. He will be heartbroken in fourth. Going to miss

:36:17.:36:22.

the podium. In which order will they finish? Given the rankings,

:36:23.:36:28.

McConnell would be the favourite. Cooper really putting pressure on

:36:29.:36:33.

the Australian. Really great to see, you can see Cooper is digging deep.

:36:34.:36:37.

Giving it everything he possibly can. It looks as if he's happy to

:36:38.:36:44.

fail, because he knows his team-mate is on the wheel of down McConnell.

:36:45.:36:50.

Gaze looks happy to follow down McConnell. Maybe they are putting

:36:51.:36:55.

pressure on him, making them work hard. Not too many places to try and

:36:56.:37:06.

pass, as they make that final lung busting climb, that is where it gets

:37:07.:37:11.

wider, and the fastest sprinter wins. Max Plaxton, he held on for a

:37:12.:37:18.

long while, the medals have slipped out of reach. He was fighting hard.

:37:19.:37:28.

You wonder how significant his back injury may have been.

:37:29.:37:32.

You wonder how significant his back performance from Max Plaxton, looks

:37:33.:37:35.

as if he's not going to be rewarded with a medal round his neck. What a

:37:36.:37:43.

fabulous day we have had. This is going to be a race that will

:37:44.:37:47.

fabulous day we have had. This is long in the memory. Three riders in

:37:48.:37:48.

contention as we come to long in the memory. Three riders in

:37:49.:37:52.

the final lap. Cooper of New Zealand in the White helmets leading from

:37:53.:37:59.

McConnell of Australia. Gaze in the black helmet from New Zealand in

:38:00.:38:03.

third. No mistakes now in this section. It looks like they may have

:38:04.:38:10.

taken the pressure off the pedals, looking around to see where everyone

:38:11.:38:16.

else was. As you say, not many places on the course... Just getting

:38:17.:38:24.

the time check. The mechanical support section. This is where they

:38:25.:38:30.

could stop for mechanical support. Once they are passed here, they will

:38:31.:38:34.

hope they have no mechanical problems. Just under two kilometres

:38:35.:38:42.

remaining to decide the medals, all three very much in the mix. The

:38:43.:38:46.

southern hemisphere dominating, Cooper from New Zealand, McConnell

:38:47.:38:54.

of Australia, Gaze of New Zealand in third. Cooper testing McConnell, so

:38:55.:39:03.

heartily at -- so far he has had the answers. They are just waiting for

:39:04.:39:08.

the part of the course where it is wide enough to get by. It is one of

:39:09.:39:13.

the rare markers we saw get tangled up with the frontrunners at one

:39:14.:39:20.

point. The rider from jersey to get pretty heavy fall, looks as if he

:39:21.:39:25.

had a wound on the outside of his right needle is up James Patterson

:39:26.:39:31.

being signalled in by the marshals. Shows how tough it is, this race.

:39:32.:39:35.

Just finishing it is some achievement. With the 80% rule, they

:39:36.:39:43.

have to finish each lap within 80% time of the lead rider. Very tough.

:39:44.:39:50.

Especially when the leaders are rising so fast. All the

:39:51.:39:54.

photographers are moving into position on the finish line as the

:39:55.:39:58.

three lead riders make their way around. Cooper, McConnell, Gaze is

:39:59.:40:06.

the order in the men's cross-country mountain bike race. This has been

:40:07.:40:12.

fantastic. Samuel Gaze looks quite comfortable. They are waiting for

:40:13.:40:17.

the course to open up after the last technical section. A sharp drop

:40:18.:40:24.

followed by another climb in the Brigadoon. We come past Balderdash,

:40:25.:40:36.

before the uphill finish. As soon as this opens up, we will see who has

:40:37.:40:40.

got the best legs, who is feeling the best. Amazing this race has been

:40:41.:40:50.

so close over one hour, 36 minutes. All still in contention. 15

:40:51.:40:55.

seconds, the closest mountain bike race ever. An English, one, two. We

:40:56.:41:06.

will probably have three riders in that time frame. The New Zealanders

:41:07.:41:13.

have been there right from the start, McConnell went

:41:14.:41:18.

conservatively, got himself involved after that. In what order they will

:41:19.:41:26.

finish, anyone's guess. It is going right to the line. Cooper has been

:41:27.:41:28.

at the front for the majority right to the line. Cooper has been

:41:29.:41:34.

last lap, it looks as if he may have done that to benefit his team-mate,

:41:35.:41:41.

Gaze. Just checking to see where they are. Perhaps they did not

:41:42.:41:49.

realise how far Max Plaxton had dropped off the pace. A little bit

:41:50.:41:56.

of cat and mouse going on. Looking behind to make sure there are no

:41:57.:42:02.

more riders, tightening their shoes. The sprint is coming up, doesn't

:42:03.:42:08.

often happen in cross-country mountain biking, but we will have a

:42:09.:42:13.

sprint for the finish. Looking to get a little bit this under his

:42:14.:42:20.

tongue, looks like Coca-Cola. Something very rare, you don't see

that often. tongue, looks like Coca-Cola.

accelerating away from McConnell. Gaze has gone past them. It will be

a New Zealand one, two. McConnell will have to settle for the bronze

:42:38.:42:44.

medal. Anton Cooper racing for gold. A sprint finish, hate magnificent

:42:45.:42:51.

race, a one, two for New Zealand. Look what it means for Anton Cooper

:42:52.:42:56.

as he crosses the line ahead of his team-mate, Samuel Gaze. Daniel

:42:57.:43:06.

McConnell settling for the bronze. The highest ranked rider in the

:43:07.:43:11.

race. Ten second separating them. Anton Cooper claims New Zealand's

:43:12.:43:18.

first ever Commonwealth gold medal in mountain biking. You can see what

:43:19.:43:22.

it means to him, fantastic performance. Didn't he have some

:43:23.:43:28.

power left at the finish? He was leaving for the majority, sprinting

:43:29.:43:35.

at some points around the back of the course. A phenomenal performance

:43:36.:43:39.

from the 19-year-old from New Zealand. A sporting tap from

:43:40.:43:46.

McConnell, you fancy his chances, but the realisation that that the

:43:47.:43:57.

youngster had on him, he realised the gold and the silver had gone.

:43:58.:44:03.

The realisation that the legs that the youngster. He has seen off the

:44:04.:44:12.

:44:13.:44:17.

potential to move into the top five in the world. That was a phenomenal

:44:18.:44:23.

performance. Didn't he have some power at the finish? He is so

:44:24.:44:27.

happy, and so he should be, well deserved. Its friends, family,

:44:37.:44:41.

career so far. To enjoy it with him, Samuel Gaze, his team-mate, A1, two

:44:42.:44:48.

for a team that had never medal before in cross-country mountain

:44:49.:44:52.

biking. They have smashed the podium with gold and silver. A bitter

:44:53.:44:56.

Commonwealth Games history, Canadians on the podium. A big day

:44:57.:45:05.

for New Zealand mountain biking. Two more medals for their tally in the

:45:06.:45:10.

Commonwealth Games. Whatever he goes on to achieve, Anton Cooper will

:45:11.:45:15.

remember this moment, the day he beat Daniel McConnell, claiming

:45:16.:45:23.

gold. They worked it well between them? Payday. They must be feeling

:45:24.:45:29.

very good, to have two New Zealanders there, working so hard.

:45:30.:45:37.

Especially Cooper on the last lap. Perhaps it was an off day for Dan

:45:38.:45:46.

McConnell. The roars are for Dan -- Grant Ferguson. He is milking this

:45:47.:45:56.

from the crowd! The 22-year-old who won the British Championships one

:45:57.:45:59.

year ago, unable to get amongst the medals, a creditable fifth place

:46:00.:46:09.

finish. Not a bad performance from Killeen, coming in in sixth. He came

:46:10.:46:16.

back strong, to bring back some of that time. Very possible he is

:46:17.:46:20.

starting his preparations for the next Olympics. He is 32, potentially

:46:21.:46:26.

could be his last Commonwealth Games. A medallist on his previous

:46:27.:46:34.

two appearances, bronze in 2002, gold in 2006. A top six finish. Does

:46:35.:46:43.

not podium this time. Let's take a look at that horrific finish, that

:46:44.:46:50.

was the moment where he won it. A magnificent piece of exhilaration,

:46:51.:46:55.

the other two could not respond. Gaze was behind McConnell, he was

:46:56.:47:00.

happy for himself and his team-mate when he crossed the line. A

:47:01.:47:03.

happy for himself and his team-mate when he crossed the line. A good day

:47:04.:47:06.

for the New Zealanders. A fabulous day. Confirmation of the lower

:47:07.:47:15.

places. Max Plaxton coming in fourth in the end. We think he was

:47:16.:47:24.

struggling a bit. This is another of the Canadian hopefuls, did not

:47:25.:47:30.

really get going today. As to be content with seventh position, he

:47:31.:47:35.

was third at the American Championships in March. Never really

:47:36.:47:40.

getting himself involved in the battle for the major positions.

of course. Let's head to the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre where the

:51:10.:51:12.

competitors are literally targeting a medal. In terms of the home

:51:13.:51:16.

nations in the men's trap, England are the main challengers, with

:51:17.:51:21.

strong contenders from India and Australia. Here is a quick guide as

:51:22.:51:24.

to what you need to know about the sport. Shotgun requires competitors

:51:25.:51:36.

to fire at moving targets, discs called Clays which are actually made

:51:37.:51:40.

of pitch and chalk. They are launched from the trap. Targets are

:51:41.:51:47.

released on or after the command from the shooter and a hit is

:51:48.:51:50.

declared when one visible piece of clay falls from the target. Targets

:51:51.:51:55.

are 11 centimetres in diameter and travel at 60 mph. In all events the

:51:56.:52:02.

shooter has to be standing with both hands supporting the gun. In Glasgow

:52:03.:52:05.

there are three separate shotgun events, Skeet, trap and double trap.

:52:06.:52:18.

In Skeet, one or two clays launched, and in the trap event shooters fire

:52:19.:52:27.

at single Clays. They get two shots per target in qualification but only

:52:28.:52:30.

one in the final. In double trap they stand 50 metres away while two

:52:31.:52:36.

are launched simultaneously and the shooters have one shot at each clay.

:52:37.:52:42.

In all events the top six and vans from qualification to the

:52:43.:52:47.

semifinals. -- ad farms. -- advance. Today it was England

:53:35.:53:36.

Commonwealth champion and Adam Vella having won a silver medal at the

:53:37.:53:41.

Commonwealth Games in Manchester, so both of them are top-level shooters.

:53:42.:53:51.

The Australian is underway and he takes the first target of the gold

:53:52.:53:57.

medal match. Now Aaron Heading. It is one apiece. 14 to go. This is the

:53:58.:54:02.

battle for the gold medal in the men's trap. The final event of the

:54:03.:54:12.

clay target competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Two

:54:13.:54:34.

from two. And Heading drops one. Already there is a gap. Now Vella is

:54:35.:54:43.

becoming very polished in the single barrel format as he demonstrated in

:54:44.:54:49.

the semifinal. Now he has been given the order to start, so he already

:54:50.:55:02.

holds a one target lead. Aaron Heading now is trying to put the

:55:03.:55:05.

miss out of his mind as he locks in. That was a good, long

:55:06.:55:14.

follow-through. Just a 1-shot lead at the moment for Adam Vella. A one

:55:15.:55:25.

target lead for Vella. He has been given the order to start. A set

:55:26.:55:34.

routine. Preparing for the target. And he takes it. Aaron Heading. He

:56:09.:56:16.

there was a piece from it. But... It has been given as indeed a missed

:56:17.:56:23.

target. So, the replay did not show anything obvious. It is indeed now a

:56:24.:56:35.

two target lead for Vella. And he charges on now to be five from five.

:56:36.:56:41.

So it is now difficult for Heading to get himself back in the groove.

:56:42.:56:47.

But still anything can happen with ten targets remaining. Just the

:56:48.:56:54.

slightest hiccup from Vella and it could be evened up again. So, the

:56:55.:57:12.

start time for Tamil' -- for Vella. Vella continuing, six from six.

:57:13.:57:20.

Heading is two down. And he drops another target, so his gold medal is

:57:21.:57:32.

living away from him. He is guaranteed a silver medal. Now three

:57:33.:57:46.

targets in arrears. Vella is a very smooth performer in the single

:57:47.:57:49.

barrel format. And he's showing it yet again. Seven from seven for

:57:50.:58:03.

Vella. Heading is now four from seven. Three targets behind. It

:58:04.:58:12.

would seem very difficult to claw that back, even if Vella misses a

:58:13.:58:22.

couple. Based on the form so far it is unlikely that Vella will miss

:58:23.:58:27.

three. Even less likely now with that confident shot. Great timing

:58:28.:58:38.

from Vella. He shot them all in the semifinal, 15 from 15, and he is set

:58:39.:58:40.

to repeat that in this gold medal match. Vella is waiting for the

:58:41.:58:56.

order to start. Adam Vella now, he is set. And another one to the

:58:57.:59:17.

tally. Heading still has a three shot deficit. Vella now needs four

:59:18.:59:35.

more to lock this up. Vella got a silver medal in Manchester. And this

:59:36.:59:41.

is the gold medal, individual gold, that he is wanting, as he misses his

:59:42.:59:48.

first target. Not happy. Now Aaron Heading may get a sniff of a chance

:59:49.:59:52.

but he, too, misses another so the margin remains unchanged. So Vella

:59:53.:00:05.

has won pairs gold but not individual gold in the Commonwealth

:00:06.:00:13.

Games. And another. That is what the pressure of this format does. So,

:00:14.:00:26.

Heading is still two down. But he is now in with a chance if Vella cannot

:00:27.:00:32.

compose himself. Two targets is the margin. Vella is giving away a

:00:33.:00:39.

substantial lead that he had by missing two in a row. He now has two

:00:40.:00:46.

compose himself. The anticipation of what lies at the end of this, he has

:00:47.:00:50.

two put that out of his mind. He drops three in a row. So, this is

:00:51.:01:00.

what this competition does. Heading now is just one behind but no, he

:01:01.:01:07.

drops another one. Both of them are buckling under the pressure. What an

:01:08.:01:12.

extraordinary end, just as it looked as though Vella was going to cruise

:01:13.:01:16.

to 15 out of 15, he misses three in a row. Two targets is the margin.

:01:17.:01:27.

Three targets remaining. Vella has two secure himself this time. And he

:01:28.:01:32.

takes it. He now needs just one more to lock it up. Two targets is the

:01:33.:01:47.

margin. Vella now needs one more. And he has the gold medal. One more

:01:48.:01:55.

target for Vella. I do not know whether he knows the maths. That is

:01:56.:02:00.

anyone's guess. He has got it. That is the gold medal for Adam Vella. As

:02:01.:02:08.

Aaron Heading prepares to shoot. To finish the gold medal match. Just

:02:09.:02:13.

one target remaining, but the result is already clear. The crowd just

:02:14.:02:21.

pausing now to let this match conclude. Adam Vella is ready to

:02:22.:02:31.

fire his last shot. The last target of the competition. And he misses it

:02:32.:02:38.

but it does not matter. We are now waiting for Aaron Heading to shoot

:02:39.:02:44.

his last target. And they both miss, so there it is, Adam Vella of

:02:45.:02:49.

Australia wins the gold medal in the men's trap. Celebrated their with

:02:50.:02:57.

his coach and team-mate Michael Diamond. It is silver for Aaron

:02:58.:03:08.

Heading of England, a topsy-turvy gold medal match. Targets dropped in

:03:09.:03:12.

allsorts of places, but in the end it was Adam Vella who followed it

:03:13.:03:17.

through with a remarkable single barrel form which he has developed

:03:18.:03:21.

in recent years. What a thrill that the crowd has been treated to. He

:03:22.:03:35.

did it the hard way. He was set to shoot a very clean and 15 from 15,

:03:36.:03:38.

but did it the hard way as the nerves got the better of him. He at

:03:39.:03:44.

last has that individual gold medal of the Commonwealth Games, something

:03:45.:03:45.

he has been pursuing for a long time. There is the national coach. A

:03:46.:03:54.

victory clinched to the camera. What a thrill it has been.

:03:55.:04:02.

ANNOUNCER: The winner of the bronze medal, representing India, Sandhu. A

:04:03.:04:27.

man who dominated the qualifying, faltered during the semifinal.

:04:28.:04:48.

The winner of the silver medal, representing England, Aaron

:04:49.:05:11.

Heading. APPLAUSE Aaron won the gold medal in Delhi.

:05:12.:05:21.

This time, the silver. Sir Jackie Stewart presenting the medal, he

:05:22.:05:28.

shot for his country on many occasions.

:05:29.:05:49.

The gold-medallist, and Commonwealth champion, representing Australia,

:05:50.:05:59.

Adam Vella. APPLAUSE Adam Vella has been pursuing that

:06:00.:06:02.

individual Commonwealth Games medal for many years. He got a silver in

:06:03.:06:09.

Manchester. This time, the gold. And what a thrill to have it presented

:06:10.:06:13.

by Sir Jackie Stewart. Ladies and gentlemen, the national

:06:14.:06:23.

anthem of Australia. And that concludes the higher target

:06:24.:07:54.

competition here. Staying at the Barry Buddon range, it is the last

:07:55.:07:58.

day of the shooting, plenty of medals up for grabs for the eventual

:07:59.:08:02.

winners. Next up, the 50-metre rifle, the small bore shooting. Here

:08:03.:08:05.

is a quick guide to help you out. In Glasgow, there are three rifle

:08:06.:08:15.

events each for men and women. Ten-metre, 50-metre prone and

:08:16.:08:24.

50-metre three positions. All events are held on a shooting range, and at

:08:25.:08:30.

each competitors have a set time to fire a set number of bullets at

:08:31.:08:35.

electronic targets. Each target features ten concentric circles with

:08:36.:08:38.

scores from one to ten. In the ten-metre event, the shooters remain

:08:39.:08:42.

standing at all times and use both arms to support the gun.

:08:43.:08:44.

50-metre prone, competitors have to lie on the fronts while shooting at

:08:45.:08:51.

the target. In the 50-metre three positions event, they have to fire

:08:52.:08:55.

at the target while standing, kneeling and lying prone. In all

:08:56.:08:59.

right for events, the top eight from the qualification round go through

:09:00.:09:05.

to the finals. Well, believe it or not the home nations are looking

:09:06.:09:08.

good for a medal here. Both England and Scotland are occupying the top

:09:09.:09:13.

four positions, which is a bit of a surprise. Let's find out how they

:09:14.:09:14.

got on. COMMENTATOR: Still 3.8 ahead, Daniel

:09:15.:09:24.

Rivers, a really decent cushion, as long as he keeps it steady.

:09:25.:09:35.

Some of them that we would have thought to be near the top, like

:09:36.:09:43.

Narang, not where they would want to be. But still time. No wonder the

:09:44.:09:50.

Scots are smiling. That was a really outstanding set of shots in that

:09:51.:09:54.

series from both Stourton and Hammond.

:09:55.:10:08.

Here we go again, the clock ticks down from two minutes 30 seconds.

:10:09.:10:18.

150 seconds. Rivers in the ten Moore. 10.6 from Hammond. 10.8. The

:10:19.:10:34.

Scots are on fire. Stourton with a 10.8. Absolutely fabulous. We have

:10:35.:10:48.

had another ten point nine. This time from Rajpu. -- Rajput. Hammond

:10:49.:11:01.

with some really good groupings. 10.1 from Stirton, not a disaster.

:11:02.:11:11.

Rivers with a 10.2, the best so far. That is OK, just looking for

:11:12.:11:17.

consistency here. He has made that bit of open water between him and

:11:18.:11:19.

the rest and just needs to be consistent, really, the youngster.

:11:20.:11:24.

He says he wants to challenge for a medal here. He has got a bronze, he

:11:25.:11:27.

could well have another here, sets itself up very nicely as he heads

:11:28.:11:32.

towards the Olympics. A couple of tens. 9.2, though. Look at the

:11:33.:11:41.

grouping here. A picture of concentration there. They shot

:11:42.:11:47.

three, less than a minute to go, in 9.9 from Hammond to stop here's

:11:48.:11:54.

Rajput. He shot his five and will be pretty happy with what he has got.

:11:55.:11:56.

10.9 and a 10.6. Excellent stuff. That was another encouraging series.

:11:57.:12:25.

Started macro with another shot, it was a 10.2, and that is a lovely

:12:26.:12:32.

finish. Yes, solid from the Scots. Rivers's lead at the top has been

:12:33.:12:36.

slightly reduced. Nothing other than a decent, solid and sometimes

:12:37.:12:41.

spectacular ten. Hammond into fourth place. -- Stam and -- Hammond into

:12:42.:12:56.

second place. Proving to be an exciting final. Think how slow and

:12:57.:13:01.

easy paced the qualification was. So, we have one more set in the

:13:02.:13:08.

prone before we had towards standing, and towards elimination.

:13:09.:13:14.

The Indian coach, always animated, always wearing those shades, as

:13:15.:13:22.

well. Yes, even indoors. It is still breezy. This will be tricky for

:13:23.:13:26.

these shooters, as we get ready to go again with another two minutes 30

:13:27.:13:32.

seconds. Close at the top, close at the bottom.

:13:33.:13:39.

Those big monitors in front of them, they can see how everyone else is

:13:40.:13:45.

doing, if they so desire. 10.84 Rajput. -- 10.8 four Rajput. Good

:13:46.:13:56.

first shot for all of the athletes, tends all around. Even if he was

:13:57.:14:00.

solidly shooting 10.3, it is better than going up and down. Rivers, the

:14:01.:14:06.

leader, all with a 10.1. Needs to start putting some big shots in,

:14:07.:14:14.

just to maintain that lead. 10.5 will do very nicely, thank you very

:14:15.:14:21.

much. Solid from Dan. Hammond, a silver-medallist in Delhi, second

:14:22.:14:24.

place, silver medal place here as well. Ten from stout and macro. A

:14:25.:14:31.

10.7 from Sampson, the Australian is shooting very well. -- from Stirton.

:14:32.:14:39.

That is a bit further away from grouping, Hammond. Kenneth Parr has

:14:40.:14:45.

had two excellent shops, and a real horror. What can he do next? Can he

:14:46.:14:52.

regroup a shack read either excellent shots. You can just see

:14:53.:14:57.

his eye moving. Watching these wind flags in front of him. These fans in

:14:58.:15:05.

front of us literally on the edge of their seats, leaning forward, all

:15:06.:15:09.

taking note of what is going on. 10.7. Good shot. You can kind of

:15:10.:15:17.

figured a 9.41 you have two 10.7s. All in the tens. Moving up in the

:15:18.:15:26.

sixth. As always, waiting for a couple. Rajput still has one to go.

:15:27.:15:35.

Hammond with a 10.1. Stirton's last shot was a 10.6. We have just over

:15:36.:15:47.

20 seconds. 10.3. Again, excellent shooting from a very high quality

:15:48.:15:52.

field. 1.2 is the difference between the two enlistment, Dan Rivers and

:15:53.:15:59.

Kenneth Parr. Sampson is the man who has to worry. Quite a bit behind

:16:00.:16:10.

Mohammad Qaddafi Jafar. Just waiting for the command to start from the

:16:11.:16:20.

He has a stopwatch. For the next competition series, load, start get

:16:21.:16:50.

yourself sixth or above and lived to start and fight another

:16:51.:16:56.

Hammond and Stirton started poorly. 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English

:16:57.:17:32.

dance like that. The Indian takes a while but gets a 9.2 away. The guys

:17:33.:17:41.

will be looking to keep it within the nine and then hitting the odd

:17:42.:17:42.

occasional ten as well. 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English

:17:43.:17:42.

dance like Anything less than that, 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English

:17:43.:17:43.

dance like that. The they will be disappointed. Quite a lot of time to

:17:44.:17:44.

get these five shots away. It will get tighter and tighter -- the

:17:45.:17:45.

English fans like that. Kenneth Parr has shot an 8.4. He will be

:17:46.:17:46.

disappointed with that on the far side. Still in second place at the

:17:47.:17:51.

moment, but it is all very, very tight. You can see how breezy it is

:17:52.:17:58.

in the finals all is well, the number on Kenneth Parr's back

:17:59.:18:02.

fluttering in the win there. It is not just the effect of the bullets

:18:03.:18:06.

downrange, also the effect of the wind on the shoot himself. It can

:18:07.:18:17.

actually bus at you and that will have a huge effect on your

:18:18.:18:21.

stability. -- it can buff at you. Niall Stourton not shooting well at

:18:22.:18:28.

the moment. Hammond has landed a ten. -- Neil Stirton.

:18:29.:18:40.

What can he do with his fourth shot? You can see has steadied that

:18:41.:18:51.

is. A small amount of sway and waiting for it to stabilise and then

:18:52.:18:58.

the shot goes. This is a man who always takes his time.

:18:59.:19:08.

That is better, keep it solid. He is up into bronze medal position.

:19:09.:19:17.

Rajput has gone into second place and Scotland fourth and sixth.

:19:18.:19:25.

Rivers is still top of the pile. That is OK. I think he is still safe

:19:26.:19:27.

at the moment. It is changing all the time. Still a

:19:28.:19:51.

couple to shoot, Hammond. And we are all done. I think Hammond still has

:19:52.:20:03.

one to shoot, I really do. He is doing the right thing. He knows he

:20:04.:20:12.

has time. Hammond, it looked like he was not happy with his 8.7 shot, he

:20:13.:20:17.

was just practising basically, getting himself centred again. That

:20:18.:20:26.

man will know what is going on, that he is ahead. At the bottom, Sampson

:20:27.:20:42.

and Jeff -- Jaafar. They need a couple of solid shots in the next

:20:43.:20:49.

series of five shots. They are in danger of being eliminated unless

:20:50.:20:50.

they do something special. Two people will leave after these

:20:51.:21:03.

five shots. Four minutes left on this. Sampson and Jaafar are in the

:21:04.:21:12.

drop zone. We will keep an eye on how they are doing.

:21:13.:21:20.

We do not want the Scots the first to be go out for the home crowd.

:21:21.:21:35.

Jaafar, he has dropped even further behind. It is close between seventh

:21:36.:21:48.

and eighth position. Rivers, so really going ahead. He is having a

:21:49.:21:56.

solid final. He seems calm and in control. That is what you want in

:21:57.:22:04.

high-pressure situations. 10.7. It is a dream final for the youngster

:22:05.:22:10.

so far. You can see the emotion on his face, he is so controlled. This

:22:11.:22:16.

man is always a picture of calmness, Narang. That is really good. 10.5,

:22:17.:22:31.

10.2. Rajput has a poor first shot but good recovery. Exhaling breath.

:22:32.:22:47.

9.3 is not his normal comfort zone. He will be looking for the ten. And

:22:48.:22:53.

a shake their head from Sampson, still in the drop zone. Still about

:22:54.:23:04.

1.4 behind Kenneth Parr. Stirton, of Scotland. 8.8, his last shot, all

:23:05.:23:18.

over the place. 9.8 is better. 10.6 from Daniel Rivers, that is

:23:19.:23:24.

excellent. The 8.6 is an aberration, which you can forgive when he is

:23:25.:23:33.

shooting so well. Yes, it evens out. Moran, a couple shockers towards the

:23:34.:23:40.

end. -- Narang. That will not help him. Sampson and Jaafar, they look

:23:41.:23:51.

like the most likely to take the walk early on.

:23:52.:24:00.

Narang, he has over a minute to get the last shot away.

:24:01.:24:12.

Sampson has not shot well enough to stay in. Bottom at the moment. 10.1

:24:13.:24:19.

is decent, but not good enough. Sampson and Jaafar, seventh and

:24:20.:24:31.

eighth, they will be eliminated. He was fourth yesterday in the prone

:24:32.:24:38.

and hoped for a medal today. Eighth in the air rifle and eighth here. He

:24:39.:24:44.

made the finals, but not a medal. It is a good effort, but he will be

:24:45.:24:49.

disappointed with low finishes in the finals.

:24:50.:24:58.

Again, just gave himself too much to do but he made the final, qualifying

:24:59.:25:11.

eighth and finishing seventh. The man from the Royal Malaysia police

:25:12.:25:15.

will have to leave his rifle fair, in a safe position. We head back to

:25:16.:25:27.

the final six. Rivers still ahead. He is stretching out a commanding

:25:28.:25:32.

lead. With five shots left, if he keeps it in control, it will be

:25:33.:25:38.

difficult to bring back that lead. Perhaps a new superstar on the

:25:39.:25:47.

shooting scene. One shocked. Kenneth Parr -- shot. Kenneth Parr. Stirton

:25:48.:26:05.

with a 10.3. That is a good shot. What can Kenneth Parr do?

:26:06.:26:12.

Rivers with a 9.7. Rajput with a Kenneth Parr, 8.3. He has dropped.

:26:13.:26:31.

Kenneth Parr is the man who has to go, that is how brutal this

:26:32.:26:38.

competition is. One shot and it can all change. Bronze in the 50 metre

:26:39.:26:46.

rifle prone yesterday and qualified third here, but he will not get a

:26:47.:26:50.

medal, he has to settle for sixth place. Once again, India's second

:26:51.:26:59.

and third. Scotland are now in the danger zone. Jonathan Hammond got

:27:00.:27:04.

silver in Delhi, but he could be the next to go. Hammond will have to

:27:05.:27:19.

shoot out of his skin and hope that Stirton stumbles. 50 seconds, one

:27:20.:27:31.

shot. And here comes the clapping. Stirton, 8.8. Hammond needs a big

:27:32.:27:43.

shot. 9.5. Is it enough? 10.0 from Dan Rivers, he is really taking

:27:44.:27:50.

control. Hammond, a 9.9 or above would have done it. It was a low

:27:51.:27:57.

shot from Stirton, which left the door open for Hammond, but he could

:27:58.:28:04.

not do it. APPLAUSE listen to the reception is the John Hammond.

:28:05.:28:09.

He has to settle for fifth place. Now we decide who will have a medal.

:28:10.:28:26.

You do not want fourth place. You do not, but it is looking clearer.

:28:27.:28:36.

Stirton, a tough ask. But at the top, quite a gap for Dan Rivers.

:28:37.:28:44.

Neil Stirton needs a huge shot. Rajput needs to have a meltdown if

:28:45.:28:53.

the Scot is to progress into the medal shoot out. 9.6, he knows that

:28:54.:29:02.

will not be enough. Ten from Rajput, more than enough. Rivers with a 9.9.

:29:03.:29:16.

In fourth, the Scot has to go. The home crowd will be disappointed

:29:17.:29:20.

because they were hoping for a medal, but it is not to be. The man

:29:21.:29:25.

eliminated in fourth place, so close, so far. Everyone applauding

:29:26.:29:34.

an excellent performance from Stirton. We know the medals, we now

:29:35.:29:42.

have to work out what colour it will be. It is a guaranteed medal for

:29:43.:30:02.

England. Rivers, he has been shooting well all the way through.

:30:03.:30:08.

He wobbled with a 9.7, ten, nine .9, but he has done enough work, early

:30:09.:30:16.

on. This last shot will be important for the silver medal. 0.8 between

:30:17.:30:19.

the two Indians. In effect, the two Indians will be

:30:20.:30:44.

looking for a shoot out, for the bronze and he stays on for the gold

:30:45.:30:46.

and silver shoot out. Narang, 9.1, dropping down into

:30:47.:31:01.

third place. There was a swing in fortune. A smile from the veteran.

:31:02.:31:13.

Silver yesterday in the 50 metres rifle prone. He looked on course for

:31:14.:31:18.

a silver, but that was a poor shot, just when he did not want it. This

:31:19.:31:24.

is looking very good for Daniel Rivers. The gap is 5.2. Barring any

:31:25.:31:36.

thing major, it is almost a dead cert.

:31:37.:31:42.

One shot between Dan Rivers, of England, and Rajput of India, really

:31:43.:31:58.

tense. Surely a formality. 10.4! What a way

:31:59.:32:19.

to finish! What a reaction from the English man. The English fans are

:32:20.:32:28.

absolutely delirious. Why not? What a vinyl. He was ahead all the way

:32:29.:32:34.

through. The 24-year-old takes the gold medal for England -- what a

:32:35.:32:41.

final. That was fantastic. What an achievement. That is his girlfriend.

:32:42.:32:54.

She will be so happy for him. Tears of joy for Dan Rivers. The Indians

:32:55.:33:00.

take silver and bronze, but England, with Daniel Rivers, a head from the

:33:01.:33:06.

start. He kept his composure. Kenneth Parr celebrates with him. He

:33:07.:33:13.

has the bronze medal himself -- a bronze medal himself. What a

:33:14.:33:16.

reception from the fans and from the shooters. 20th yesterday in the

:33:17.:33:26.

rifle prone in the 50 metres, but a second medal. It is gold.

:33:27.:33:35.

Dan Rivers, thirsty work, you have just had a slug of water. I don't

:33:36.:33:44.

know what to say. Earlier in the week, getting bronze in the air

:33:45.:33:49.

rifle. You know, it had come early, I didn't realise... I wasn't ready

:33:50.:33:53.

for that. Now I have had that feeling before, one into the final.

:33:54.:33:58.

I felt a lot steadier throughout the final there. More calm and just

:33:59.:34:05.

absolutely smashed it again. Get in! So the bronze medal earlier, that

:34:06.:34:08.

kind of calm Jew down and got you to a place where you knew what you had

:34:09.:34:18.

to do? Going -- calmed you down. Running through that in the air

:34:19.:34:22.

rifle, it just prepared me for coming out. I felt calm, I felt

:34:23.:34:30.

ready. Did my thing. Took me through all the way. This is a bit like the

:34:31.:34:33.

ready. Did my thing. Took me through all the way. This is a bit triathlon

:34:34.:34:36.

of rifle shooting. Three different disciplines. This is the marathon,

:34:37.:34:41.

we call it. It is a hard day. Two and a half hours of shooting in

:34:42.:34:45.

three different positions. So it does technically take the best guys

:34:46.:34:51.

to really get to the top. I qualified in first, I was really,

:34:52.:34:54.

really pleased with that, there is some solid standing. Now obviously

:34:55.:34:59.

to back it up in the final, that is always the pressure moment. You

:35:00.:35:02.

don't want to qualify first and go out last in the final, it is or is

:35:03.:35:06.

the worst way to do it. To come out first and then take gold, it is

:35:07.:35:11.

amazing. Dan Rivers, Commonwealth champion, and literally last man

:35:12.:35:13.

standing, great stuff. Very well to Daniel Rivers and his

:35:14.:35:21.

gold for England at the shooting. Maybe one day my face might be up

:35:22.:35:29.

there? Who knows. Let's get our first games of wrestling at the SECC

:35:30.:35:32.

just behind the armadillo over my shoulder. One of the more

:35:33.:35:36.

traditional sports on view here at the Commonwealth Games, started by

:35:37.:35:41.

that reckoning of Roman gods. Let's get a more up-to-date version is a

:35:42.:35:47.

guide of what you can expect in this sport.

:35:48.:35:51.

Wrestling was one of just four sports contested at the very first

:35:52.:36:01.

Commonwealth Games. It is a classic contest between two athletes seeking

:36:02.:36:04.

dominance through a range of grapples, holds, pins and throws.

:36:05.:36:10.

Men and women compete in all weight categories in freestyle events,

:36:11.:36:13.

whereas Lazar allowed to use their legs for gripping an opponent, and

:36:14.:36:19.

they can hold all parts of the body. A white circle in the middle of the

:36:20.:36:26.

mat measures three metres diameter. It is split into three zones. Points

:36:27.:36:34.

are awarded if you push your opponent into the red zone or for

:36:35.:36:38.

executing a wide variety of holds all blocks will stop it will be used

:36:39.:36:45.

to decide the two finalists in each weight division. They are grappling

:36:46.:36:50.

for medal matches this morning. The first match of this evening session

:36:51.:36:56.

was for a bronze medal. In the 57 kilograms division in freestyle.

:36:57.:36:59.

England against Wales. Commentary from Colin Bryce and non-Evans.

:37:00.:37:14.

Wales being led out here, the Welsh flag, the moment in the history of

:37:15.:37:23.

Welsh wrestling. Never before have they had a medal in freestyle

:37:24.:37:27.

wrestling. You came pretty close in Delhi. Can he do it? So excited to

:37:28.:37:35.

see Craig here. Up against this young man, Omar Tafail, who will be

:37:36.:37:41.

competing in the red singlet. Omar, in many ways, has had a lucky draw

:37:42.:37:46.

to get through against Craig. This is our referee, the Canadian. She

:37:47.:37:51.

will be overseeing the 23-minute rounds. Just checking them over,

:37:52.:37:57.

making sure they are not too sweaty, no foreign bodies on them. We are

:37:58.:38:04.

underway. Craig Pillings of Wales in the blue and Omar Tafail in the

:38:05.:38:16.

red. If Craig can win this and win Wales first ever wrestling medal, he

:38:17.:38:18.

will be a very proud man, and so will I. I was out in Delhi fighting

:38:19.:38:25.

with him. I am so excited to see him on the mat tonight. Craig Pilling

:38:26.:38:30.

managed fourth at the Commonwealth Games in the 55 kilo class in Delhi.

:38:31.:38:37.

A big chance for him here. He is a fast wrestler, very quick. There he

:38:38.:38:46.

goes with the leg. He has a very low lake when he goes for the lead. Very

:38:47.:38:55.

quick fighter. Omar Tafail lost to the wrestler from Nigeria. That is

:38:56.:39:00.

why Omar Tafail has come down to this as well. If you lose to one of

:39:01.:39:03.

the finalists, you get a second chance, as it were. Just a bit of

:39:04.:39:07.

hand control they are looking for here. Two three-minute periods. If

:39:08.:39:13.

you get a take-down, that is the most common way to school. -- to

:39:14.:39:24.

score. Once you are down there you have about ten seconds to work on

:39:25.:39:36.

your man. Craig is defending very, very well. He is a very fit the

:39:37.:39:41.

wrestler. He has got to be careful there on the ground. What he is

:39:42.:39:44.

trying to do is flipped his opponent over onto his back. He has got to be

:39:45.:39:52.

careful there. The Englishman is putting up quite a difference. Craig

:39:53.:39:57.

did well to get out of that. Pushing his head down, using his weight

:39:58.:40:01.

well. Still hasn't been given the two points. Nobody is in control.

:40:02.:40:06.

The referee is looking on. She brings them back to their feet. At

:40:07.:40:12.

the moment it is 0-0, or know, is it going to be a point? I think it was

:40:13.:40:19.

a warning may be, I'm not sure. No points have appeared just

:40:20.:40:20.

a warning may be, I'm not sure. No have been brought back to their

:40:21.:40:24.

feet. Basically they need to throw their opponent on the floor to get a

:40:25.:40:29.

point. If they pin them down on their back, shoulder blades on the

:40:30.:40:33.

ground, that will end the match. If somebody goes ten points clear, that

:40:34.:40:38.

is the end of the match. There are two periods of three minutes and

:40:39.:40:41.

your points from the first round will carry on into the second round,

:40:42.:40:48.

second period. Craig Pilling has had a warning. This makes sense here

:40:49.:40:52.

now. That warning from the referee was to bring up the 30 second clock.

:40:53.:41:08.

They go into this 30 second clock. He has to do something now, he has

:41:09.:41:12.

to score or the point will go against him. He has not done it yet

:41:13.:41:20.

but he is certainly being very busy. That is the 30 seconds up. The

:41:21.:41:25.

Englishman will get a point. That is the new reeling that has come in. If

:41:26.:41:28.

you are too passive you get that 30 seconds on the clock and you must

:41:29.:41:34.

score a point in those 30 seconds. There you go, England 1-0 up. This

:41:35.:41:41.

is a surprise, the Englishman, Tafail, expected to lose this

:41:42.:41:44.

contest. That is more like the Craig Pilling we have seen before. At the

:41:45.:41:54.

British championships he won 10-0. Another two points for that. He took

:41:55.:42:00.

down to the ground, got behind him, rolled him again for another two.

:42:01.:42:03.

Great work from Craig Wright at the end of the first period. 4-1 to

:42:04.:42:11.

Wales, just three points in it. -- from Craig, right at the end of it.

:42:12.:42:23.

It is up to 6-1, the score, five points in it. Let us look at the end

:42:24.:42:29.

where Pilling used his speed. He rode him on his side, he gets

:42:30.:42:34.

another two, and then he does it one more time and gets another two

:42:35.:42:39.

points. He finishes background six points, five clear. Look at the

:42:40.:42:49.

determination on his face. He is only 19 years old, the Englishman

:42:50.:42:56.

Omar Tafail, he is growing in stature here. He put up a good fight

:42:57.:43:02.

for the first two minutes or so. Can he come back on Craig Pilling of

:43:03.:43:03.

Wales, in blue, who leads this 6-1 at the moment? Were he to go up to

:43:04.:43:08.

11-1, filling with win by technical severity, as it is known -- Craig

:43:09.:43:14.

Pilling would win, going ten points clear. He has to be careful because

:43:15.:43:19.

the Englishman is very clear there are many and for the two legs. -- he

:43:20.:43:26.

is very clear there, coming in for the two legs. Craig has fought the

:43:27.:43:32.

Wales for years and years and he is very experienced. He lives and

:43:33.:43:39.

reigns in Bolton, as well. -- lives and trains. Very much a counter

:43:40.:43:44.

fighter. The new rules have changed the way he has to wrestle. Also it

:43:45.:43:53.

is energy sapping, you need speed, strength and stamina. He goes in for

:43:54.:44:00.

the double leg. Good defence from Craig. Still got the leg. Is he

:44:01.:44:02.

still? Yes, he has to get both knees onto

:44:03.:44:13.

the ground to get the two points, but Craig is doing really well. He

:44:14.:44:19.

will get the two points, surely? The referee raises a hand. Is he going

:44:20.:44:28.

to pin him? A reversal there. It was considered just on the mat. He will

:44:29.:44:34.

get a point as well. It should probably go Wales 7-3 England. Yes,

:44:35.:44:43.

that is what should happen. Craig did very well not to spread his legs

:44:44.:44:46.

and put his knees on the floor. England have got the two points. A

:44:47.:44:53.

reversal, so a full two points. You are awarded with more points now for

:44:54.:44:57.

the reversal. Still five points in this contest. One minute 15 seconds

:44:58.:45:06.

to go. They are both working so, so hard. They both want this medal. It

:45:07.:45:13.

means so much to both of them. These wrestlers are some of the fittest

:45:14.:45:18.

athletes around. Back to their feet, one minute to go in this final

:45:19.:45:24.

period of three minutes. I think a lot of people thought Pilling who

:45:25.:45:29.

just dominated at the British Championships up against being

:45:30.:45:34.

Lishman would dominate this too. The file in red, being Lishman, putting

:45:35.:45:37.

up a good fight. Pilling, another good turn. Being Lishman will take

:45:38.:45:44.

it up to 8-5. Can he spin him on his back to get another two points? --

:45:45.:45:47.

the Englishman 30 seconds for Craig Pilling to hold

:45:48.:46:03.

on to get his first ever medal in the wrestling. He has got control of

:46:04.:46:10.

the arm there. 20 seconds to go. The file has managed to pull this

:46:11.:46:14.

back-up. He could charge of the mat, that would only get him one point.

:46:15.:46:19.

He really needs a double leg and pop onto his back. A 4-point move is

:46:20.:46:22.

what the Englishman needs to this around. Craig is going to hold on,

:46:23.:46:30.

two seconds to go. The first ever Welsh medal in freestyle wrestling,

:46:31.:46:41.

in wrestling full stop. The bronze medal goes to Craig Pilling of Wales

:46:42.:46:47.

defeating Omar Tafail of England 8-5 over the two. Delighted for Craig

:46:48.:46:53.

Pilling. He worked so hard. It will probably be his last Commonwealth

:46:54.:46:58.

Games and he will go over to his corner, his coach and Alan Jones,

:46:59.:47:02.

who has been a servant of Welsh judo and Welsh wrestling for over 20

:47:03.:47:06.

years. Absolutely delighted for them. Here he goes. This is his

:47:07.:47:15.

first two points, he turns him over for another two. He gets the four

:47:16.:47:26.

points. He did well there. The Englishman, tar file, gave it his

:47:27.:47:33.

all for the -- Tafail, gave it his all. The Welshman walks off knowing

:47:34.:47:37.

he will get a bronze medal. He must be very happy with that.

of course making its debut. Let's go to the lightweight division.

:48:01.:48:05.

Wales's Charlene Jones against an seeker Ara Shackley -- an seeker Ara

:48:06.:48:35.

champions of the respective nations. Charlene Jones of Wales. Her

:48:36.:48:43.

opponent, wearing red, Arachchi of Sri Lanka. Both 23 years of age.

:48:44.:48:51.

Arachchi, she is the reigning national champion at 60 kilograms,

:48:52.:48:57.

having taken that title last year. Four two-minute rounds scheduled. A

:48:58.:49:14.

fast and furious start by both. Arachchi, making good use of her

:49:15.:49:20.

range and straight shots. She just allowed Jones to finish the exchange

:49:21.:49:25.

on the inside. Jones with her back to the rope momentarily. She moved

:49:26.:49:30.

to her left to come out of that confining corner. Losing her

:49:31.:49:40.

balance. But then fashioned a clinch at close quarters. The referee

:49:41.:49:49.

issuing no instructions. Jones needs to make the most of these clinchers.

:49:50.:49:59.

-- clinches. She will struggle at range with her opponent, who has

:50:00.:50:05.

longer arms. Making good use of the straight shots. Jones needs to work

:50:06.:50:11.

our way inside. When she is inside, throw the body shots and the head

:50:12.:50:16.

shots. Switching the attack. Good shot success from Arachchi. It will

:50:17.:50:26.

be interesting to see how the judges score it. The eye-catching shots

:50:27.:50:30.

came from the Sri Lankan. Jones leading off, but she just lost

:50:31.:50:45.

her balance. Catching a strong rear hand by her opponents. Both boxers

:50:46.:50:51.

exchanging. Quite difficult to decide between the two. The judges

:50:52.:50:58.

have found in favour of Jones. Charlene Jones is part of a nine

:50:59.:51:04.

strong contingent of two women and seven men.

:51:05.:51:12.

The instructions concluded with, come back with a left hook. Into the

:51:13.:51:25.

second round. A fast start. That is in an effort to lay claim to the

:51:26.:51:32.

pivotal place of centre ring, they strode out. A blistering start by

:51:33.:51:41.

both. Jones needs to apply pressure and push her opponent back onto the

:51:42.:51:46.

ropes. She is capable inside. She needs to work through the phases.

:51:47.:51:52.

When she gets inside, she needs to capitalise. Left right success from

:51:53.:52:02.

Arachchi, but a response from Jones. Arachchi, she will be where she

:52:03.:52:07.

conceded the opening round despite her success. She is being met by an

:52:08.:52:14.

equally determined Charlene Jones. Both having single shot and

:52:15.:52:25.

combination shot success. Jones is best when she is inside. She is a

:52:26.:52:32.

front foot pressure fighter. She needs to turn her opponent and put

:52:33.:52:46.

the pressure on herself. A right hook towards the back of the head

:52:47.:52:53.

from Jones. The double jab attack, the last did not get through. She

:52:54.:52:59.

needs to get behind the jab. She is happy, Arachchi and, to move back if

:53:00.:53:06.

you put the pressure on. Jones needs to continue pressure with her feet,

:53:07.:53:10.

shuffling forward behind to continue pressure with her feet,

:53:11.:53:18.

punches. That was a good round of boxing. The end of round number two,

:53:19.:53:27.

remember. Jones taking the opening round. We can listen in. Despite the

:53:28.:53:40.

presence of a head guard, Arachchi, she picked up the cuts. Probably a

:53:41.:53:53.

car finger rear hook from Jones. -- cuffing. All three judges seeing in

:53:54.:54:02.

favour of Jones after the second round.

:54:03.:54:16.

Two rounds to go. Charlene Jones is boxing beautifully. She is using

:54:17.:54:28.

speed and quickness and intelligence to counter the length and skill and

:54:29.:54:35.

thoughtfulness of her opponent throughout these two rounds. She

:54:36.:54:39.

took the opening rounds in unanimous fashion. She has presented an

:54:40.:54:45.

elusive target for the boxer from Sri Lanka. She came off the ropes

:54:46.:54:53.

and gave the opponent plenty of room. A good right hand over the

:54:54.:55:02.

top. Jones is using her feet to terrific effect to launch attacks,

:55:03.:55:12.

despite her height. Look at that for the snaking left hand. Great head

:55:13.:55:18.

movement. Slipping and punching at the same time and avoiding straight

:55:19.:55:25.

shots from Arachchi. Starting to command this bout. In Arachchi

:55:26.:55:39.

pursuit, -- in pursuit, Arachchi. A good right hand to the body.

:55:40.:55:47.

Arachchi, while she has been pose the puzzle she cannot figure out...

:55:48.:55:53.

Jones got herself onto the medal podium in the GB tournament. I say

:55:54.:56:12.

GB, I mean Gee Bee. Great movement by Jones. A confident display during

:56:13.:56:21.

the course of that round. The legs were used wonderfully. Keeping

:56:22.:56:27.

herself out of trouble, launching attacks and exhibiting the art of

:56:28.:56:33.

hitting without being hit. Exactly what Olympic boxing is about. You

:56:34.:56:37.

need to deploy good defences not to get hit. Excellent head movement to

:56:38.:56:45.

avoid shots coming back at her while she comes back with counterpunches

:56:46.:56:49.

to good effect. Again, all of the judges in favour of Charlene Jones

:56:50.:57:04.

in the blue corner. The despondent looking Arachchi. She has a cut and

:57:05.:57:14.

is trailing by 3-0 as we enter the final round. Charlene Jones

:57:15.:57:24.

representing Wales, two successive national titles. Just took a right

:57:25.:57:32.

hand from Arachchi. An aggressive fast start by boxer who is perhaps

:57:33.:57:37.

becoming increasingly desperate. Finding herself towards her own

:57:38.:57:41.

corner but then using good lateral movement to escape. This is where

:57:42.:57:48.

Jones needs to use her footwork. Keep the majority of the ring behind

:57:49.:57:52.

her so she can escape the inevitable attack by her opponent. Charlene

:57:53.:58:00.

Jones using every inch of the boxing ring. Look at that for invasive

:58:01.:58:06.

movement. Dipping at the knees, swaying, coming back with shots of

:58:07.:58:13.

her own. It was great trunk movement. The shots are starting to

:58:14.:58:20.

flow. She is relaxing, you can see that in her shoulders. Coming back

:58:21.:58:27.

with capable shots and combinations. That single, spearing left jab has

:58:28.:58:33.

been affected. Dipping Japanese. The right hand of her opponent sailing

:58:34.:58:40.

harmlessly over her head. And left right success from Jones. She is

:58:41.:58:46.

using the ring, single shots, catching her with that jab. That was

:58:47.:58:54.

a lovely rear hand, just doing that combo. It was a good right-hand lead

:58:55.:59:03.

out of the orthodox stance. Caught with a straight left, but it has

:59:04.:59:08.

been another commanding display in the final round. A confident

:59:09.:59:14.

performance from Charlene Jones. Excellent head movement once again.

:59:15.:59:23.

And a cheeky uppercut by Arachchi. A wonderful performance by Charlene

:59:24.:59:28.

Jones, in blue. She has produced a brilliant display. Surely it is just

:59:29.:59:36.

waiting the formality of the official announcement that will seal

:59:37.:59:39.

her place in the quarterfinals of the lightweight tournament.

:59:40.:59:46.

Arachchi, she started brightly, but as the contest group, Jones grew

:59:47.:59:52.

confident. She did and she was shining towards the end of this

:59:53.:59:58.

bout. Skipping away. Beating her opponent to the punch, despite her

:59:59.:00:01.

longer range. An excellent performance. ANNOUNCER: Ladies and

:00:02.:00:10.

gentlemen, we have the judges' score. In the blue corner...

:00:11.:00:27.

CHEERING. Charlene Jones! A dominant display over the Sri Lankan. Punch

:00:28.:00:33.

perfect and in rounds three and four, she went through the gears and

:00:34.:00:38.

produced a masterclass of boxing to get through to the last eight. Job

:00:39.:00:47.

done in the opening bout. That is how she did it. Unanimous fashion.

:00:48.:00:51.

Taking every round from every judge. Congratulations. Onto the

:00:52.:01:04.

next one now. Were you nervous? Very nervous. Did you sleep last night? I

:01:05.:01:14.

did not sleep too well. I was thinking in my head what I would do.

:01:15.:01:19.

If you are thinking about what you were going to do, did you do it? I

:01:20.:01:26.

It is amazing. The crowd are good. I really enjoyed it. Well done. It was

he won. His girlfriend, Vicky, was in floods of tears, and also hear

on top of the podium. Emotional scenes for Daniel Rivers

:10:07.:10:12.

at the Barry Buddon shooting centre. You expect there might be one or two

:10:13.:10:32.

bits of jostling for position for the next five days or so. The

:10:33.:10:44.

weightlifting for England's women, great scenes with a great backflip

:10:45.:10:48.

celebration at the end. Only a few days ago, what about Rebecca Tyler,

:10:49.:10:53.

the 15-year-old from Yorkshire. She finished fourth in which was a huge

:10:54.:10:58.

credit for her. She is a prospect. What about Mercy Brown? One of the

:10:59.:11:04.

team-mate in England. There are two disciplines in the wake lifting, the

:11:05.:11:10.

snatch and the clean and jerk. Mercy is lying fifth after the snatch.

:11:11.:11:13.

They are now into the second discipline.

:11:14.:11:20.

COMMENTATOR: Mercy Brown does not gain ground, just keeps herself

:11:21.:11:27.

where she gain ground, just keeps herself

:11:28.:11:31.

in relation to the lifter from Fiji. This is Mercy Brown from England.

:11:32.:11:42.

And that is a big setback. It is a setback. She looked like she rushed

:11:43.:11:49.

that a little bit. Now, what I would say is that the English camp now are

:11:50.:12:05.

going to have to hope the Fijian opponent runs into trouble. Apolonia

:12:06.:12:13.

Vaivai. She grabbed the bar, goes right into it and starts lifting

:12:14.:12:17.

before she was completely stationary. It through her momentum

:12:18.:12:22.

backwards. Apolonia Vaivai has put her next attempt up to 115. Mercy

:12:23.:12:31.

must come out here and try and make amends. She did it in the snatch, I

:12:32.:12:35.

am confident she can do it in the clean and jerk. Just getting rid of

:12:36.:12:41.

the nerves on that first lift. The only way this works for mercy, she

:12:42.:12:47.

has to make this, hope that Apollonia misses the next two and

:12:48.:12:50.

then she can load the weight on the bar and go for the big one on her

:12:51.:12:56.

final attempt. That is the equation for the English lifter.

:12:57.:13:19.

Not an easy clean but so gutsy. Oh! It looked horrible but it did not

:13:20.:13:38.

actually hit her. She was not patient enough. She went right into

:13:39.:13:42.

the jerk. So hard with these heavyweights coming don't want to

:13:43.:13:44.

spend a lot of time on your shoulder, thinking about it. She is

:13:45.:13:52.

so gutsy. Not exactly stable when she goes to drive. That caused it to

:13:53.:13:59.

go forward. Luckily she got away from it in time. This is a really

:14:00.:14:08.

hard job now for Keith. He has got to rebuild the confidence so that

:14:09.:14:18.

she can say, "yes, I can", and come out and deliver. This is the second

:14:19.:14:23.

athlete today we have seen change their game plan from going for

:14:24.:14:28.

bronze to going for a position on the scoreboard. So we can absolutely

:14:29.:14:37.

say that Apolonia has got the bronze medal, because there is not anybody

:14:38.:14:40.

out there who will take anything away, because the reality is that

:14:41.:14:46.

Mercy Brown is now really focused on getting that total. That's right.

:14:47.:14:49.

APPLAUSE This would be for 203, which at the

:14:50.:15:07.

moment would put her into second place, but remember the two big guns

:15:08.:15:14.

have yet to start. Just waiting in the wings the first course to finish

:15:15.:15:23.

and the main course to arrive. She needs to take her time between

:15:24.:15:27.

lifts. That is actually a better clean than the second one. She is

:15:28.:15:33.

getting stable. She saves the day. APPLAUSE

:15:34.:15:38.

You know what? We should not ignore the fact that those two big guns do

:15:39.:15:42.

need to make at least one clean and jerk each to keep her off the

:15:43.:15:46.

podium, so there is that possibility as well. That is what you learn

:15:47.:15:52.

during a career, you have to come back from adversity. Ritchie

:15:53.:15:59.

Paterson had to do it last night. He did not expect to be red lighted on

:16:00.:16:04.

his first two attempts. Mercy did not expect to fail her first two

:16:05.:16:09.

attempts. It was a great jerk, so solid overhead. That clean wasn't

:16:10.:16:14.

that easy, she really composed herself for the jerk. The other

:16:15.:16:17.

thing is, OK, the bronze medal she does not have, but making that lift

:16:18.:16:24.

is going to help her go home in a much more positive frame of mind.

:16:25.:16:29.

That's right, and it will help her in future competitions when she

:16:30.:16:33.

finds herself in hot water, she knows she can get herself out of it.

:16:34.:16:38.

Apolonia Vaivai, in a funny sort of sense, is in no man's land. She has

:16:39.:16:44.

209 kilos, she is in the lead but in a situation where she can't catch

:16:45.:16:48.

the first two. She has just got to lift out here on these first two

:16:49.:16:52.

attempts. You never know. Union do know, because I expected her to get

:16:53.:16:58.

that. Just a little far back on the heels. What I was going to say, you

:16:59.:17:03.

never know with either the Canadian or the Samoan if they ran into

:17:04.:17:13.

trouble. That is true. The weight was just back on the heels there. At

:17:14.:17:18.

the moment, Fiji in the lead with 209, Apolonia Vaivai just at this

:17:19.:17:24.

particular moment in time, it is England's Mercy Brown in second

:17:25.:17:30.

place on 203. In third place, Kylie Leuluai Beck Australia on 197.

:17:31.:17:40.

Apolonia Vaivai not wasting any time. This is a precious experience.

:17:41.:17:54.

This for a total of 214. Nice try. But not to be. She really fought it.

:17:55.:18:00.

Just not high enough on the collarbone.

:18:01.:18:00.

But not to be. She really fought it. Just not high enough on the Her

:18:01.:18:02.

consolation prize is the bronze medal.

:18:03.:18:10.

Apolonia Vaivai, second in the previous championships. Now at new

:18:11.:18:18.

Caledonia, and in these Commonwealth Games she will take home the bronze

:18:19.:18:23.

medal. Just slipped right off the shoulders there. So now, a we have

:18:24.:18:29.

the head-to-head jewel that will determine who is the champion and

:18:30.:18:32.

who is the runner-up. The Canadian is heavier than her

:18:33.:18:50.

Samoan opponent. This would take to 243. If I am not... A Commonwealth

:18:51.:18:57.

Games clean and jerk record and total record.

:18:58.:19:23.

That was a nice first clean. There is so much whip on the bar with the

:19:24.:19:31.

big weights because they move a lot. Does she master it? She does. That

:19:32.:19:40.

is the start we were looking for. Commonwealth Games clean and jerk

:19:41.:19:45.

and total are now hers. It was in 2010 that the record was set. Now

:19:46.:19:55.

the Canadian has both records. They may change again. Mary Opeloge, she

:19:56.:20:12.

has one kilogram more. That would make her level. It would not give

:20:13.:20:17.

her the overall record but it would give her the clean and jerk record.

:20:18.:20:23.

You have to break a record by one kilogram to take a record. That is

:20:24.:20:29.

where we can see interesting things happen, when one person has the

:20:30.:20:33.

total record and the other has the medal. They will not be

:20:34.:20:40.

concentrating on records, they will look for a weakness in each other.

:20:41.:20:46.

There was no weakness in the clean, I can tell you that. David, I am so

:20:47.:20:54.

excited. We have four more attempts like this ahead of us. Mary Opeloge

:20:55.:21:00.

And, when she competed in Delhi, she finished fifth. Marie-Eve

:21:01.:21:10.

Beauchemin-Nadeau, when she finished as runner-up, she totalled 225. Four

:21:11.:21:17.

years ago it was an 11 kilograms advantage to the Canadian, but times

:21:18.:21:23.

have changed. Four years of training can change a lot of things. Mary

:21:24.:21:31.

Opeloge, she comes from a family of five and two of them are already

:21:32.:21:34.

Commonwealth Games champions from Delhi. She wants to join the family

:21:35.:21:42.

roll of honour stop Mary is in a great position. She is assured the

:21:43.:21:49.

silver this could be a new clean and jerk

:21:50.:22:07.

and Commonwealth Games total record. What I like about her is she is

:22:08.:22:10.

coming out smiling and she is confident.

:22:11.:22:14.

She knows this will feel good. A personal best at 141. This is within

:22:15.:22:30.

her range. Such leg strength. It is not the coming from the bottom like

:22:31.:22:32.

that from a dead stop. And not the coming from the bottom like

:22:33.:22:39.

solid jerk in her pocket. And that was it. She stabilises and delivers.

:22:40.:22:46.

solid jerk in her pocket. And that So easy. That is putting a lot of

:22:47.:22:54.

pressure on Mary from Samoa. Her last lift was easy but between the

:22:55.:23:00.

clean and jerk, she did not adjust her foot width and that could go

:23:01.:23:03.

against her. She needs to correct that technical error. It seems that

:23:04.:23:10.

both coaching teams are determined this will be decided on the very

:23:11.:23:17.

last lift of each of their athletes. Mary Opeloge, 138, exactly the same,

:23:18.:23:29.

to go to 247 she will grab the clean and jerk record. But who cares about

:23:30.:23:32.

that at the moment? Completely irrelevant. She has the power for

:23:33.:23:38.

this. It is all about the transition from the clean to the jerk.

:23:39.:23:49.

Oh, no! As she started to walk forward, her hips got behind. She

:23:50.:23:59.

could not get back underneath the bar, advantage Canada.

:24:00.:24:06.

If you want to carry on watching the weightlifting, go to the BBC

:24:07.:24:11.

website. No medal for Mercy Brown, but there are medal prospects at the

:24:12.:24:15.

shooting range, which is where we are heading. We are hoping to see a

:24:16.:24:22.

little bit of history in the making. Jen McIntosh of Scotland will make

:24:23.:24:27.

history if she takes a medal in the 50 metres rifle. It would make her

:24:28.:24:31.

the most decorated Scottish athlete in the Commonwealth Games history.

:24:32.:24:36.

It is a record she would take away from her mother, a former shooter.

:24:37.:24:40.

We can join our commentator, Richard Drew.

:24:41.:24:49.

COMMENTATOR: At the moment, anything could change. Elimination does not

:24:50.:24:56.

come until we have a couple of shots in the standing series. Still one

:24:57.:25:00.

minute on the clock. We are waiting for the slower, more steady shooters

:25:01.:25:08.

to shoot. The Indian being one of those. 10.8, it was worth the wait.

:25:09.:25:40.

It takes her to fourth. Mohamed Taibi, she is so experience. The

:25:41.:25:46.

wind is blowing. Unlike qualification, way you choose when

:25:47.:25:49.

to shoot, here, there is the time pressure. And in qualification, the

:25:50.:25:59.

maximum is ten. Now we have up to 10.9. The pressure on Jen McIntosh.

:26:00.:26:15.

23 years of age, from Edinburgh. The leader is Ser, from Singapore.

:26:16.:26:32.

Wrigley with 9.2, she needs to pick up her game. She is a little behind.

:26:33.:26:40.

10.1 from Jen McIntosh. She is finding her range.

:26:41.:26:50.

Ser, she is inscrutable. Not shooting great at the moment. She

:26:51.:26:57.

needs a couple of tens to keep herself at the top of the

:26:58.:27:04.

leaderboard. The fractional scoring is designed to create extra

:27:05.:27:11.

volatility. The difference between 10.9 and ten is enough to change the

:27:12.:27:18.

rankings. We saw that in the men. We thought Rajput would get the silver.

:27:19.:27:23.

In the end, it was a ranking slipped down with poor last shot. That is

:27:24.:27:37.

solid shooting from the South African. Most eyes will be on the

:27:38.:27:49.

local girl, Jen McIntosh. She had a variable round. She is in fourth at

:27:50.:27:58.

the moment. It does not matter if you are in the high nines as long as

:27:59.:28:08.

you get some decent tens, as well. Jen McIntosh following the clan of

:28:09.:28:13.

shooters, with dad Donald and her younger sister, who we saw in the

:28:14.:28:22.

air rifle event. And surely, who presented the medal to her daughter

:28:23.:28:29.

yesterday, is a medallist herself. She is struggling at the moment.

:28:30.:28:31.

Almost two points behind Ridley. Kneeling is over. We have seven

:28:32.:29:00.

minutes to change over to be on your stomach, prone shooting.

:29:01.:29:15.

Those firearms are highly specialised and purpose-built for

:29:16.:29:22.

this discipline. And you have the heavy canvas clothing.

:29:23.:29:34.

While they take a break at the shooting, just to prepare for the

:29:35.:29:46.

next position, which is lying prone, we will go to the wrestling and a

:29:47.:29:48.

chance of a gold for England. Now for the gold medal match. This

:29:49.:30:18.

should be a cracker. I do not think Yana Rattigan will get it her own

:30:19.:30:29.

way. She was quoted an hour ago saying she was desperate to deal

:30:30.:30:32.

with the nerves. She wants to win, but she is trying to deal with the

:30:33.:30:41.

nerves. Vinesh, she looks cool calm and collected. She beat her opponent

:30:42.:30:54.

by a technical superiority, racking up ten clear points in double quick

:30:55.:31:01.

time, but I do not think Yana Rattigan will have that easy a

:31:02.:31:02.

fight. The gold medal contest about to

:31:03.:31:15.

begin. Rattigan of England in blue. In the red, Vinesh, of India.

:31:16.:31:27.

Straightaway, Vinesh. Rattigan looking cold at the start. She

:31:28.:31:35.

looked nervous walking out. She has got medals, she is the more

:31:36.:31:40.

experienced wrestler. She is married to Leon Rattigan, who is fighting

:31:41.:31:44.

for England at the Commonwealth Games.

:31:45.:31:52.

This is a great comeback from Rattigan.

:31:53.:31:59.

The wake-up call of being taken down almost straightaway has done its

:32:00.:32:03.

job. That was a great technique, picking

:32:04.:32:13.

up four points, the maximum you can get for a throw in wrestling. It

:32:14.:32:19.

used to be five. If you pin your opponent's shoulders on the ground

:32:20.:32:23.

for a few seconds, it is the end of the match. It only needs to be a

:32:24.:32:29.

momentary pause. Not like professional wrestling, when you

:32:30.:32:33.

have the three count. This is the real deal. The shoulder blades down

:32:34.:32:43.

for the momentary pause. You need ten clear points to win.

:32:44.:33:02.

the same move as earlier on. The Indian very low, coming in for that

:33:03.:33:03.

leg. It was a good defence. That was almost eight carbon copy of

:33:04.:33:19.

the first she gave away. She is so low, Vinesh. Rattigan has got the

:33:20.:33:30.

arm now. When you get your comfortable grip, your favourite

:33:31.:33:34.

grip, that is when you go in. The whistle had gone there. She is

:33:35.:33:35.

lucky. It is still four apiece in this

:33:36.:33:48.

first period. Three minutes of each period, two periods of course. Were

:33:49.:33:56.

it to be an absolute right at the end of the match, then the highest

:33:57.:34:00.

scoring move would be the one that decides it. At the moment, it is

:34:01.:34:04.

Yana Rattigan with a 4-point take-down she did that would get the

:34:05.:34:07.

nod. Though the way the wrestling has gone here at the Commonwealth

:34:08.:34:10.

Games with these new rule changes, I am very much doubtful this will be

:34:11.:34:16.

the final score. The whistle has gone there. That was a warning for

:34:17.:34:26.

the Indian early on for passivity. Now the clock has come up, it takes

:34:27.:34:31.

down to 30 seconds. If the Indian does not score a point now in the

:34:32.:34:35.

next 30 seconds, Rattigan will get a point. So she needs to defend now.

:34:36.:34:42.

This new rule change to encourage the athletes to be attacking. The

:34:43.:34:47.

Indian deemed to be too passive. She is running out of time here.

:34:48.:34:53.

Rattigan did not need to do that, she could have just offended there.

:34:54.:34:57.

The Indian scoring the points. 6-4 now. That is the end of round one.

:34:58.:35:08.

6-4. Vinesh at the halfway point leading by two. Yes, I cannot

:35:09.:35:13.

understand why Yana Rattigan came in for that throw their with so little

:35:14.:35:16.

time on the clock. She could have just stayed and offended, and she

:35:17.:35:20.

would have got the point and she would have been in the lead. Here is

:35:21.:35:25.

the 4-point throw. Excellent, drives ahead, nearly gets the pain. So

:35:26.:35:28.

close to getting her shoulder blades on the ground, which would have

:35:29.:35:32.

spelt the end of the match. The Indian girl does so well the bridge

:35:33.:35:39.

out of that. So strong. Back out for the second period, three minutes to

:35:40.:35:45.

decide that gold medal. In the women's 48 kilo class. Yana Rattigan

:35:46.:35:49.

of England, two points down at the moment on Vinesh, the Indian. She

:35:50.:35:55.

might not have a history of doing well at major championships, Vinesh,

:35:56.:36:00.

but both her sisters are World Championship bronze-medallists, and

:36:01.:36:03.

that says it all. It is in the family. 8-4 up at the moment and

:36:04.:36:14.

Rattigan is in some trouble here. Try to go for the late lace but

:36:15.:36:16.

Rattigan managed to defend it. She needs to score now, but there is

:36:17.:36:29.

plenty of time left on the clock. And we know she can pull these big

:36:30.:36:32.

throws it she gets the right grip. The Indian is defending, pushing

:36:33.:36:36.

Rattigan's head down with the right hand. She comes in for an attack but

:36:37.:36:46.

doesn't get a score. Now just under two minutes to go. In this gold

:36:47.:36:52.

medal match, Rattigan of England in blue, four points down. She looks so

:36:53.:36:59.

impressive, after an initially poor start and a take-down. She has just

:37:00.:37:04.

started to stall a little bit, Vinesh, the youngster, growing, in

:37:05.:37:09.

terms of confidence, against Rattigan, who comes to this with a

:37:10.:37:15.

very impressive list of medals, including two European champion ship

:37:16.:37:18.

Silver medals, and a fifth, even more impressively, at the World

:37:19.:37:22.

Championships. Yes, Vinesh looks strong. She looks in control, she

:37:23.:37:26.

just has to defend her lead. Doesn't matter if she gets penalised, she

:37:27.:37:36.

takes her down the four points. -- for four points. The referee seeing

:37:37.:37:40.

it both ways, Vinesh getting a take-down, but a reversal onto the

:37:41.:37:45.

back for the Englishwoman, so four points, she is going to get her onto

:37:46.:37:48.

her back, she gets another two points. It will go to 10-8. Was that

:37:49.:37:56.

another reversal? No, she has her legs tied in. It is OK. She does,

:37:57.:38:02.

she gets a reversal, Vinesh, 50 seconds to go in this gold-medal

:38:03.:38:06.

match. Can the Englishwoman pull out of this and score three more points

:38:07.:38:11.

that she needs? She is running out of time, the referee is going to

:38:12.:38:14.

bring them back to their feet, which is good news for Rattigan of

:38:15.:38:18.

England. She needs every second now to try and get something going here.

:38:19.:38:25.

They are giving it their all. They are so fit, these athletes. She has

:38:26.:38:37.

got 30 seconds. She needs to get out of there. She needs three points,

:38:38.:38:43.

she needs more than two. If she spins round for the take-down, she

:38:44.:38:46.

needs to get her onto her back, start scoring. The Indian hanging on

:38:47.:38:54.

for her life here. She is so strong in that defensive position, the

:38:55.:39:01.

Indian. Rattigan, five seconds to go, Vinesh will take the gold

:39:02.:39:07.

medal! The Indian has done it! And the hopes and dreams of Yana

:39:08.:39:12.

Rattigan, I'm afraid, have turned into silver.

:39:13.:39:24.

Disappointment for England's Yana Rattigan, back to the Barry Buddon

:39:25.:39:28.

range, where hopefully we see a bit of history with Scotland boss Mike

:39:29.:39:32.

Jen McIntosh going for a record-breaking fifth Commonwealth

:39:33.:39:35.

Games medal, the most by any Scottish woman at the Commonwealths,

:39:36.:39:39.

in the three position at 50-metre rifle. COMMENTATOR: Li with a 10.3.

:39:40.:39:53.

The wind has just started whistling around the commentary position. Just

:39:54.:39:55.

starting to do the same on the range as well. They are keeping going. I

:39:56.:40:07.

have always found that the wind is slightly less bad on the left-hand

:40:08.:40:11.

side, which is where van Reenen is, and that may help her. 10.64

:40:12.:40:16.

Macintosh. -- 10.64 Macintosh You want a good clean recoil that

:40:17.:40:40.

comes back to you. McIntosh, in fourth at the moment. That is a

:40:41.:40:51.

really good effort. Does not matter. Everyone's eyes on the

:40:52.:41:04.

scoreboard to see what is going on here as we get to the end of this

:41:05.:41:10.

series of five shots. Van Reenen, 9.6, she will be disappointed. You

:41:11.:41:21.

can't get better than a 10.9. That put some daylight between her and

:41:22.:41:32.

the shooter from Singapore. Two go in the first elimination so it is

:41:33.:41:35.

important to be right up the board if you can. I think it is pretty

:41:36.:41:39.

clear who is going to be eliminated at this stage. McKenzie is only 8.6

:41:40.:41:50.

-- she is only 0.6 behind Ridley. The Australian and New Zealand are

:41:51.:41:51.

struggling at the moment. Still there or thereabouts for Jen

:41:52.:42:14.

McIntosh, only 0.6 away from the Indian in first place. She only

:42:15.:42:20.

squeaked into the final, so she has had a bonus already really. She

:42:21.:42:23.

would love to stay, loved to climb up that board. McIntosh is certainly

:42:24.:42:32.

still in with a chance. Just imagine a hometown win for the final medal.

:42:33.:42:37.

This is a temporary stand, and I wonder whether it would stand up to

:42:38.:42:40.

the cheering and jumping up and down. We will see. 10.3 is a really

:42:41.:42:48.

good way to start. Remember, elimination stoned start until we

:42:49.:42:50.

get into the standing element of this, so there is time. Li with a

:42:51.:42:59.

10.5. Van Reenen solid as well. These are amazing scores with the

:43:00.:43:04.

wind. Van Reenen 10.2 is solid but she will want to do better here.

:43:05.:43:11.

Just slowing the breathing down. You will see her hold her breath and the

:43:12.:43:17.

right. The. And there goes the shot. And a 10.6, absolutely beautifully

:43:18.:43:24.

done. It is van Reenen ahead by quite some distance at the moment

:43:25.:43:34.

from Jasmine Ser. Gauswami A decent start from her. Nothing out of the

:43:35.:43:46.

tens for McIntosh. One more for her to go. About a minute and a quarter

:43:47.:43:48.

to go. Macintosh with another 10.4. Van Reenen, look at this. 210.6

:43:49.:44:10.

pleural and a 10.7. Extraordinary. Really good grouping. That is what

:44:11.:44:15.

you want, all of the shots close together. Can she finish this off?

:44:16.:44:24.

She needs a bit of a cushion really because, as you said, in

:44:25.:44:30.

She needs a bit of a cushion really she may drift down as we get towards

:44:31.:44:36.

the eliminated standing shots. But that is the end of the prone

:44:37.:44:40.

shooting. We now have nine minutes. This is the standings. We will go

:44:41.:44:44.

into what you have to do in the standings in just a minute, but look

:44:45.:44:50.

at that, 4.4 points ahead, Esmari van Reenen. Gauswami in the bronze

:44:51.:44:56.

medal position at the moment with Jen McIntosh just a point behind.

:44:57.:45:00.

All very tight for the medals apart from that cushion that van Reenen

:45:01.:45:04.

has built up, but that may be pushed away. She has built up a big lead.

:45:05.:45:09.

Hard to see her surrendering that but anything can happen in this

:45:10.:45:17.

pressure cooker. The seventh and eighth series, both of five shots,

:45:18.:45:23.

250 seconds you get. After the seventh and eighth series, the first

:45:24.:45:26.

to leave, and then we get a single shots. 50 seconds, and somebody

:45:27.:45:32.

leaves after each shot. It is a really exciting format. Indeed, this

:45:33.:45:37.

is the first real test this new final system for all disciplines

:45:38.:45:42.

which are shot at the liver games and the Commonwealth Games. These

:45:43.:45:47.

new rules came into play at the beginning of 2013 to current

:45:48.:45:51.

Olympiad. And so this is one of the first major trials for them, with

:45:52.:45:59.

ticket buying audience, and the full television coverage. World Cups and

:46:00.:46:02.

World Championships, the World Championships this year still to

:46:03.:46:07.

come, they don't quite have the same atmosphere of a Commonwealth Games,

:46:08.:46:10.

so this has been a vital test these new rules and the regulatory board

:46:11.:46:14.

has been watching closely. Let's go wrestling again, England's

:46:15.:46:31.

Mike from the is up in the 70 kilogram division.

:46:32.:46:46.

COMMENTATOR: Desperate to get out of the blocks here, Mike Grundy of

:46:47.:47:19.

England in blue, Galea of Malta in red. He will be looking to exert

:47:20.:47:25.

some authority in this match, get some control. There he is, he is

:47:26.:47:31.

lifting, he has to control the landing. Brilliant throw. Four

:47:32.:47:35.

points. Now he is looking for the four. I think David Galea has

:47:36.:47:41.

injured his head, he has landed badly. Now he does. Galea looks in

:47:42.:47:47.

some trouble here. Grundy has not noticed either. Trying to rack up

:47:48.:47:55.

points. Two more and technical superiority, this will be over very

:47:56.:48:00.

quickly. I am afraid David Galea, after being slammed to the mat, not

:48:01.:48:04.

just winded, but I think somewhat shaken as well. It looks like he has

:48:05.:48:10.

injured his leg actually on the landing. Fifth place for Galea, but

:48:11.:48:17.

a bronze for England, Mike Grundy did not waste any time. He took a

:48:18.:48:21.

long hard look in the mirror, having lost a semifinal, knowing he missed

:48:22.:48:25.

a really good chance of getting into the gold medal match, and he came

:48:26.:48:29.

after this with his third down, ready to go. Really clinical

:48:30.:48:34.

finisher, a well executed leg attack. We will watch it now. He

:48:35.:48:46.

lifts. A really controlled landing. It looks like he is in pain.

:48:47.:48:59.

For Michael Grundy, this will perhaps go some way towards making

:49:00.:49:07.

him feel better after losing the semifinal after losing the match to

:49:08.:49:14.

the Pakistani athlete. He had a massive lead and he managed to lose

:49:15.:49:20.

it, it went out of his grip somehow. He was thrown for a big throw in the

:49:21.:49:23.

second period. Grundy, of England, gets bronze.

:49:24.:49:31.

Welcome back to Pacific Quay. Everybody is chilling out. The

:49:32.:49:35.

weather is blustery in Glasgow today. Before we go back to the

:49:36.:49:41.

wrestling and the shooting, as far as the Royal family are concerned,

:49:42.:49:45.

they have been causing a stir in social media at the Commonwealth

:49:46.:49:51.

Games. Jane Taylor started the trend when she managed to capture a

:49:52.:49:58.

photograph of the Queen, photo bombing her picture. Prince Harry

:49:59.:50:04.

photo bombed the rugby sevens coach for New Zealand. And the royal visit

:50:05.:50:12.

to meet the athletes has caused a lot of attention. Usain Bolt posted

:50:13.:50:15.

a picture, writing, feeling like royalty. Lynsey Sharp tweeted this

:50:16.:50:22.

is how she felt right now with Kate Middleton in the background. Photo

:50:23.:50:28.

opportunities did not go as well for Tom Reid. Saying it was probably the

:50:29.:50:33.

worst time he could have had his eyes closed in a photograph. Before

:50:34.:50:38.

we get to the shooting, there is that break and we will go back to

:50:39.:50:39.

the wrestling. The next bronze medal match. Get

:50:40.:51:00.

ready for the cheers as Fiona Robertson comes out. She has the

:51:01.:51:06.

defeat of her sister to avenge. Muambo, she was incredibly

:51:07.:51:12.

impressive against her twin, Donna Robertson, who fought earlier on.

:51:13.:51:18.

CHEERING. This is the wrestler from camera

:51:19.:51:33.

room. -- Cameroon. Big cheering air. Getting behind the wrestler in red.

:51:34.:51:40.

Fiona Robertson. She and her twin have been inseparable for the past

:51:41.:51:45.

years, doing judo together and getting medals in 2002 at the

:51:46.:51:51.

Commonwealth Games in judo. A bronze medal, Fiona Robertson there, and

:51:52.:51:55.

she decided to come over to wrestling a number of years ago and

:51:56.:51:59.

now we are going for a bronze medal. This will be quite a story. 12 years

:52:00.:52:06.

apart, the bronze medals would be, if she were to pull it off. I must

:52:07.:52:12.

stress that Fiona Robertson of Scotland is up against a very tough

:52:13.:52:18.

fighter, a fighter inside the top 25 at the World Championships. Muambo,

:52:19.:52:29.

in blue, the African champion. Fiona Robertson will be carried by 3000

:52:30.:52:39.

plus people here. Muambo, she beat Robertson's twin sister by ten

:52:40.:52:44.

points earlier today. She has her work cut out, Fiona Robertson. If

:52:45.:52:49.

she wins a medal for Scotland, it would raise the roof. There is not a

:52:50.:52:56.

spare seat in the crowd tonight. A completely packed arena. Muambo, she

:52:57.:53:05.

got the take there. She got two points early on. Robertson needs to

:53:06.:53:06.

be careful. The sisters come from Hamilton in

:53:07.:53:19.

Scotland, not too far down the road. No doubt a lot of friends and family

:53:20.:53:25.

in the audience. But this is an uphill battle. She is up against a

:53:26.:53:29.

woman with huge form in Africa and out the World Championships. She has

:53:30.:53:34.

popped over. The referee not giving points, though. Yes, he has. Two

:53:35.:53:41.

popped over. The referee not giving points. Robertson has to be careful

:53:42.:53:43.

in case she is put onto her back again. She is defending well. That

:53:44.:53:55.

was a lovely technique by Muambo. Robertson did well not to land on

:53:56.:53:59.

her back and get pinned. She is so strong. Muambo. Totally dominating

:54:00.:54:05.

the Scotswoman. Muambo, in wrestling terms, is not a

:54:06.:54:20.

spring chicken. Just about to turn 30. Still over 15 years the junior

:54:21.:54:26.

of Robertson. Robertson, all those years of judo and wrestling, she

:54:27.:54:31.

will have to call on all of those to take on the sheer strength of

:54:32.:54:38.

Muambo. She looks dominant and in control. There she goes, takes her

:54:39.:54:43.

down. That was good defence by Robertson. She was almost a

:54:44.:54:51.

contortionist to get out of it. That must have been painful. She got

:54:52.:54:54.

control of the head and the shoulder. If it goes to term points,

:54:55.:55:03.

Muambo will have the bronze medal and Robertson's hopes of being a

:55:04.:55:06.

double bronze medallist will be over. She has clocked up the points

:55:07.:55:14.

easily. In for the double, can she get behind her for the two? That is

:55:15.:55:23.

it, ten points, all over. 2.27, the clock stops in the first period.

:55:24.:55:28.

Robertson looks dejected but she was up against a tough fighter. Muambo,

:55:29.:55:32.

she is so strong. Robertson, up against a tough fighter. Muambo,

:55:33.:55:37.

cannot use age as an excuse. I am sure she would not. She already has

:55:38.:55:43.

a Commonwealth bronze, won sure she would not. She already has

:55:44.:55:47.

It is quite magnificent she has managed to make it here.

:55:48.:55:51.

It is quite magnificent she has applauding the audience. She no

:55:52.:55:57.

doubt enjoyed the ride. She and her sister putting up a good fight. Both

:55:58.:56:05.

of them losing to Muambo. Look at that, straight onto her back. Again,

:56:06.:56:12.

she gets control of that head and drives through. It is great

:56:13.:56:18.

technique from Muambo. You can tell she is a class wrestler. These

:56:19.:56:25.

sisters have done Scotland so proud. Perhaps retirement is calling for

:56:26.:56:31.

the twins at 45 years old. You never know, it is only four years till the

:56:32.:56:36.

next Commonwealth Games. I am not sure what the record is for the

:56:37.:56:41.

oldest wrestler ever, but at 45, both twins, that is quite something.

:56:42.:56:46.

Sadly, the BBC at Pacific Quay has burst into life. Danny MacAskill.

:56:47.:57:00.

Look at this. There is no denying this man probably has record hits as

:57:01.:57:05.

far as YouTube is concerned. Give him a round of applause! APPLAUSE.

:57:06.:57:16.

While he is not doing too badly with record viewing is from people all

:57:17.:57:17.

over the world, what about somebody record viewing is from people all

:57:18.:57:22.

trying to create a record over at the Barry Bardon shooting range? Jen

:57:23.:57:25.

trying to create a record over at McIntosh from Scotland is in the 50

:57:26.:57:31.

metres rifle three positions. Could she be the most decorated Scottish

:57:32.:57:34.

woman in Commonwealth history? Let's find out.

:57:35.:57:52.

There is the leader at the moment. Van Reenen. McKenzie and Robyn

:57:53.:58:07.

Ridley with it all to do. ANNOUNCER: For the next competition series,

:58:08.:58:16.

load. Start. Expect variable scores. The wind, on cue, starting to get

:58:17.:58:24.

up. You can see the flags in the distance. Really starting to

:58:25.:58:30.

flutter. It is crunch time as we go into the standing shooting and a

:58:31.:58:40.

very solid 10.34 McIntosh. -- 10.3 four McIntosh. Van Reenen with an

:58:41.:58:48.

eight, goodness me, not a great start. She will need to get decent

:58:49.:58:53.

tens in here because she will be up and down in this. The difference

:58:54.:59:00.

will be chipped away if she keeps shooting eights. We talked about her

:59:01.:59:07.

weakness in the standings. -- standing. If people keep shooting

:59:08.:59:19.

10.5s, like Mohamed Taibi, McIntosh with 9.8 will. -- with 9.8, it will

:59:20.:59:31.

swap around. I am liking McIntosh in this. She likes the standing part of

:59:32.:59:39.

the competition. She finished quickly in qualification. Van Reenen

:59:40.:59:52.

is still struggling. She knows her strengths and weaknesses. She will

:59:53.:59:55.

not get carried away when she sees she is top. McIntosh, 10.3, keep

:59:56.:00:07.

doing that and you will be there or thereabouts.

:00:08.:00:18.

McIntosh, another good shot. 10.5. She cannot help but show emotion in

:00:19.:00:27.

that face whether she is happy or not. She is thriving on this crowd.

:00:28.:00:38.

There is pressure. She felt it in the air rifle, in tears when she was

:00:39.:00:47.

eliminated. A little look over to her fiancee. A little nod of the

:00:48.:00:59.

head. He was helping commentating with the men's final, but he said he

:01:00.:01:05.

was off to be nervous now! McKenzie put decent shots in, but 8.4 will

:01:06.:01:09.

not help. They are both looking vulnerable.

:01:10.:01:23.

7.9 four Robyn Ridley and she is eighth and last at the moment and

:01:24.:01:31.

almost two points away from seven place -- seven.

:01:32.:01:38.

Ser is top, so she needs a solid shot. 10.2 will do very nicely. The

:01:39.:01:54.

South African is feeling the heat. Two gold medals at the African

:01:55.:01:59.

Championships in 2007 and three years ago. But she has dropped down.

:02:00.:02:07.

Jen McIntosh. Right in striking distance. 2.4 behind. It sounds a

:02:08.:02:18.

lot. McKenzie in seventh. Six points away from Mohamed Taibi. Something

:02:19.:02:21.

would have to go horribly wrong for them not to be eliminated. Five

:02:22.:02:36.

shots to save yourself. Scotland! Bought the T-shirt and the

:02:37.:02:45.

sweatshirt. Can Jen McIntosh hold this together? It was a really good

:02:46.:02:50.

series last time. You need tens. That will do. Nothing

:02:51.:03:09.

wrong with that. McIntosh's rifle is showing less impact on recall than

:03:10.:03:13.

the others. It hardly moves. Must be something to do with the grip.

:03:14.:03:22.

McKenzie, if she goes out, she will go out fighting. Van Reenen is

:03:23.:03:31.

struggling at the moment. The woman in third. She is having a bit of a

:03:32.:03:43.

blow up here. That's right, she shakes her head. She cannot believe

:03:44.:03:48.

what is happening. Gauswami, in third, she was solid all the way

:03:49.:03:58.

through qualification as well. Ser, 9.9 and 10.4 for Macintosh.

:03:59.:04:02.

through qualification as well. Ser, 9.9 and 10.4 The crowd reacting.

:04:03.:04:08.

Ridley with a 10.4. She is going to go out with her head held high.

:04:09.:04:15.

Mohamed Taibi, she was in sixth, she has hauled herself up into fifth.

:04:16.:04:26.

10.2 will not harm her cause at all. Macintosh, 9.8 her last one. Not as

:04:27.:04:31.

good as the last series but she is still in second place. 9.8 was one

:04:32.:04:39.

of the exceptions, mostly in the tens. That's better, that will make

:04:40.:04:47.

her feel better, 10.3. Again, she shakes her head, thinking about what

:04:48.:04:52.

she has done before that shot. She is a bit far behind Gauswami now. It

:04:53.:04:57.

is really interesting this new format. Li with not a very good set

:04:58.:05:06.

of shots, there. Just a few more shots to get away. Gauswami has got

:05:07.:05:16.

a while to go. She has only got a few shots away. Gauswami in third

:05:17.:05:27.

place. The scoring system has caught up with us now. She is in third

:05:28.:05:40.

place. Mackenzie will have one more shot in this competition before she

:05:41.:05:43.

exits, and this has not been about last series. -- a bad last series.

:05:44.:05:53.

She is waiting for the wind to die down. She has over a minute to get

:05:54.:05:59.

this in. You can see her number flapping in the breeze on her back.

:06:00.:06:04.

A slight puff of smoke from the 22 round. 9.7, that is not outstanding

:06:05.:06:12.

from Mackenzie but she will not be dead last, she will take seventh

:06:13.:06:22.

place and Ridley is in eighth. Please give it up for Australia's

:06:23.:06:27.

Robyn Ridley! APPLAUSE Fourth in the rifle prone, and

:06:28.:06:34.

agonising position TBN, she is in eighth position here. She will be

:06:35.:06:36.

disappointed but at eighth position here. She will be

:06:37.:06:42.

two finals. Absolutely, it is no mean feat, making the final. She was

:06:43.:06:50.

delighted to get to the final and she left it to the last minute. She

:06:51.:06:58.

has two exit. She takes seventh place. -- has to. Now it gets

:06:59.:07:08.

interesting, after each shot we will have an elimination, and only 50

:07:09.:07:14.

seconds to get your shot away. This is the pointy end, the battle for

:07:15.:07:20.

the gold medal. Mohamed Taibi, 0.9 behind of Singapore. -- behind Li.

:07:21.:07:29.

She is still in the battle as well and the Scots will have all eyes on

:07:30.:07:38.

lane F, and that is Macintosh. You have to feel for her after all of

:07:39.:07:52.

this. So, six are left. Li and Mohamed Taibi are tied. Just one

:07:53.:08:01.

shot each. 9.6 from Macintosh, 10.1 from Li. That is better from the

:08:02.:08:10.

South African. 10.6 former Hammer tidy, catapulting her up to fourth.

:08:11.:08:15.

It will be van Reenen. She has been top all the way. But then a series

:08:16.:08:25.

of poor shots means that she has to go. The South African got silver in

:08:26.:08:29.

the rifle prone. She will be really disappointed. She knows that when it

:08:30.:08:35.

comes to the shooting in a standing position, then she has a weakness.

:08:36.:08:58.

Macintosh can still take the gold. She is within striking distance, she

:08:59.:09:02.

has two just maintain her composure and hold it together with this

:09:03.:09:08.

crowd, that is quite extraordinary. Li is in danger, half a point adrift

:09:09.:09:13.

of Mohamed Taibi, her neighbour, the Malaysian. 10.4 from Macintosh.

:09:14.:09:25.

Excellent effort from Li. Mohamed Taibi gets a 10.1. It has not been

:09:26.:09:37.

enough from the Singaporean. Li is in fifth place but a huge cheer

:09:38.:09:41.

because Jen McIntosh has moved into top place by just 0.1 of a point.

:09:42.:09:54.

Li, the Singaporean, the 20-year-old who was actually born in China, from

:09:55.:10:00.

the Singapore rifle Association, and she has 27 four fifths. -- she has

:10:01.:10:07.

disabled for fifth place. The majority of the cloud will like

:10:08.:10:12.

this, .1 ahead, Jen McIntosh ahead of Jasmine Ser. She has been

:10:13.:10:18.

shooting so assuredly. This will be one heck of a battle. You expect

:10:19.:10:29.

Mohamed Taibi to be eliminated next. Gauswami is also 3.5 points behind

:10:30.:10:33.

Jasmine Ser. This will decide who misses out on the medals. Let's see

:10:34.:10:42.

what Macintosh can do here. Another solid shot is what is needed, she

:10:43.:10:47.

shoots quickly but only gets 9.4. Let's see what Ser can do. We're

:10:48.:10:55.

just waiting to see what Ser does. 10.6 from Mohamed Taibi is excellent

:10:56.:11:01.

but it will not be enough. 10.5 from Ser. She jumps back into the lead.

:11:02.:11:06.

It is Mohamed Taibi who will miss out on the medals, she is in fourth

:11:07.:11:10.

place. She made headlines in the Olympic Games when she was heavily

:11:11.:11:16.

pregnant and got a bronze in the ten metre air rifle. She will have two

:11:17.:11:23.

exit, she will be disappointed but she has had a good games overall.

:11:24.:11:27.

Just one point separates first and second. We are now down to the last

:11:28.:11:37.

couple of shots, the last three shots, and the first will decide who

:11:38.:11:42.

takes the bronze medal. You would expected to be Gauswami, she is 3.7

:11:43.:11:48.

behind. Macintosh will not be looking over her shoulder, and she

:11:49.:12:01.

has to try to shut this out now. We are waiting for the chief range

:12:02.:12:08.

officer to get us underway with our next 50 seconds. Load. This is to

:12:09.:12:22.

determine the bronze medal. Start. 50 seconds, this is an important 50

:12:23.:12:25.

seconds if you are one of the three at this range. Macintosh will not be

:12:26.:12:30.

worried about third, she will be going for gold. At least keeping it

:12:31.:12:35.

down to the last shot. She did not like that one at all. Ser, can she

:12:36.:12:45.

respond? Gauswami with a 10.9. The perfect shot from the Indian to

:12:46.:12:51.

finish but we are waiting for Ser. So Macintosh will make up some

:12:52.:12:59.

ground. She is now .6 behind Ser, Gauswami Indian will take bronze.

:13:00.:13:09.

There is a big Indian delegation in front of us. A lot of Indians of

:13:10.:13:16.

course here, a big allegation. The bronze medal for the 25-year-old

:13:17.:13:27.

Indian. It is very tight, though. So, one shot now to work out who

:13:28.:13:31.

takes gold and to take silver. It has come down to this. 0.6 between

:13:32.:13:39.

Macintosh and her mother cannot bear to look. What a way to finish the

:13:40.:13:46.

shooting of the Commonwealth Games. What a way to finish, just one shot

:13:47.:13:51.

apiece to determine who will take the gold medal. The crowd waiting to

:13:52.:13:57.

see if Macintosh can manage it. She has been in this position before.

:13:58.:14:07.

Two medals in Delhi. She has been very composed, Ser. But Macintosh

:14:08.:14:13.

has been one shot better in the last three shots or so. It is a 7.9. Oh

:14:14.:14:24.

dear. Ser, keep your calm and you will get the gold. She is taking her

:14:25.:14:37.

time. It is 9.8, she will take gold. Jasmine Ser of Singapore takes the

:14:38.:14:42.

gold medal. Jen McIntosh of Scotland will have two settle for the silver.

:14:43.:14:48.

The second medal for her of course, it was a bronze yesterday in the 50

:14:49.:14:55.

metre rifle prone. Disappointment for the Scottish crowd here but she

:14:56.:15:00.

has done ever so well. What a magnificent performance by Ser, she

:15:01.:15:04.

kept going and stuck to her guns, if you will excuse the pun! 23 years of

:15:05.:15:10.

age, she had golds and silvers from Delhi. She is very good, but what a

:15:11.:15:21.

performance. From Jen McIntosh. Also 23. The Edinburgh girl. She has just

:15:22.:15:28.

come up the road to the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre. She had us on the

:15:29.:15:33.

end of our seats right to the last few seconds of these Commonwealth

:15:34.:15:41.

Games events. The sole tyre is now around Macintosh but let's not

:15:42.:15:46.

forget, long way from home, Jasmine Ser, brilliant shooting. What a

:15:47.:15:46.

final we have had. It is David herewith Jen McIntosh.

:15:47.:16:03.

You have just stop shaking. Just about. It was incredible. I messed

:16:04.:16:09.

up the last shot spectacularly but it was incredible. Fourth going into

:16:10.:16:15.

the final standing events, at one point you were first. And then as

:16:16.:16:20.

you say it came down to last shot. What was going through your mind?

:16:21.:16:24.

Not a lot I was just trying to keep my heart rate down because it

:16:25.:16:30.

pounding away. I did my best. It turns out my best was not good

:16:31.:16:34.

enough but I am thrilled. Certainly good enough to become the only Scots

:16:35.:16:39.

woman ever to have won five Commonwealth medals, how does it

:16:40.:16:41.

feel? It is incredible, I cannot believe that. Your mother 's record

:16:42.:16:47.

has gone, you have surpassed it! About time! Many congratulations.

:16:48.:16:54.

What a way to end the games and the shooting. Learn. Absolutely, I am so

:16:55.:17:00.

glad to be here. -- the shooting. And. -- the shooting for Scotland. I

:17:01.:17:12.

am just delighted. Congratulations. It may not be the gold medal but she

:17:13.:17:17.

takes home the silver. She is a record breaker, history in the

:17:18.:17:22.

making on BBC Three, the most decorated Scottish woman ever to

:17:23.:17:24.

participate in the Commonwealth Games with five medals to her name.

:17:25.:17:29.

Well done to Jen McIntosh. We will have live boxing on BBC Three in a

:17:30.:17:34.

while. Before that, let's talk more about the women's event because

:17:35.:17:39.

Natasha Jonas has been in action in the lightweight division. Let's see

:17:40.:17:40.

how she got on a bit earlier. COMMENTATOR: As we move into the

:17:41.:17:51.

second round, scheduled for four twos. Natasha Jonas is from England,

:17:52.:17:58.

in blue, a southpaw stance. She took the opening round in a unanimous

:17:59.:18:02.

fashion over Shelley Watts, the 26-year-old Australian. She took

:18:03.:18:11.

national titles in 2011 and 2014. Jonas is targeting the body

:18:12.:18:13.

effectively and using her legs wonderfully. Watts with a cooler

:18:14.:18:23.

thing right to win that exchange for the Australian. -- cuffing. Good

:18:24.:18:44.

play from Jonas once again. Ring on with the right hook. Enjoying

:18:45.:18:52.

success when Natasha Jonas holds her feet. Far too fleeting shots to the

:18:53.:19:06.

body. Jonas is a slippery customer. Her strength is her footwork, she

:19:07.:19:26.

needs to keep that going, Watts struggling to pin her down. The call

:19:27.:19:37.

of, straight coming from Jonas' corner, calling for her to fire

:19:38.:19:42.

straight shots. A good start at the SECC. Watts ending the round on the

:19:43.:19:54.

front search. -- front foot macro. Having more success in the closing

:19:55.:20:08.

30 seconds. -- front foot. She needs to shift her feet left or right,

:20:09.:20:14.

find the angles, she needs to come off with the rear and, making the

:20:15.:20:19.

second phase decisive for the judges. The judges have found it all

:20:20.:20:28.

in favour of Watts. She had a fair amount of success to the body,

:20:29.:20:33.

catching Jonas when she was operating off the ropes. Parity

:20:34.:20:38.

after two completed rounds. Two rounds to go. We are tired. -- tide.

:20:39.:20:50.

All tied up moving into this round. rounds to go. We are tired. -- tide.

:20:51.:20:55.

All tied up Natasha Jonas wearing blue, the Olympic quarterfinalist,

:20:56.:21:05.

when she lost to Katie Taylor. She gets a talking to from the referee

:21:06.:21:11.

there. Her opponent is a two time reigning champion of Australia. A

:21:12.:21:24.

beautiful right uppercut from Jonas. Just before that, she took a hard

:21:25.:21:30.

body shot. Jonas getting back to her range. Every time she holds her

:21:31.:21:40.

feet, Watts is capitalising. She is very capable on the inside, Jonas

:21:41.:21:46.

needs to get back to rangy boxing, getting back to her straight shots,

:21:47.:21:53.

coming back with that checked right hook, to capitalise on those

:21:54.:22:00.

exchanges. That is perfect. Far more competitive round and round number

:22:01.:22:05.

one. Watts beginning to find her range. A good right-hand response

:22:06.:22:13.

from Jonas. Jonas comes into the contest as the reigning European

:22:14.:22:22.

Championship silver medallist. Far less use of the legs from Jonas. All

:22:23.:22:28.

about the judges' perception, you have two convince them you are on

:22:29.:22:33.

top, if you stand and trade, it is 50-50. She needs to get back to

:22:34.:22:40.

range, to her strengths, and make Watts play. Very competitive round,

:22:41.:22:50.

both boxers having success. It's going to be very interesting to see

:22:51.:22:54.

how the judges scored that one, not a lot in it. Very, very close. They

:22:55.:23:02.

were both exchanging, no real clear, decisive winner. Jonas coming

:23:03.:23:10.

back with a straight left hand, straight vacuum, a three punch

:23:11.:23:20.

salvo. -- straight back in. It was touch and go, all three judges

:23:21.:23:28.

favouring Watts. After conceding the opening round in unanimous fashion,

:23:29.:23:34.

she has taken rounds two and three, Natasha Jonas has it all to do,

:23:35.:23:39.

Shelley Watts has it all in her favour. She has to do drag Jonas

:23:40.:23:49.

into a fight, that is getting the best of the exchanges. Natasha Jonas

:23:50.:23:55.

in the blue operating out of the southpaw stance, losing by two

:23:56.:24:02.

rounds to one to the boxer moving forward, Australia's Shelley Watts.

:24:03.:24:09.

She took the opening round in unanimous fashion, Jonas, by using

:24:10.:24:17.

her feet. 30 seconds gone, but the use of legs not in evidence as

:24:18.:24:22.

effectively as it was in the opening round. Watts has taken the two

:24:23.:24:29.

subsequent rounds. She has grown in confidence, starting off very

:24:30.:24:35.

strongly in the fourth round. Beautiful countered left-hand. That

:24:36.:24:43.

causes Watts to touch down, no knock-downs as the referee. Still

:24:44.:24:50.

the Australian on the front foot. Beautiful right hand from Jonas.

:24:51.:24:57.

Watts responding with a left hook. Crunching left hand. These tactics

:24:58.:25:05.

are spot by Watts, she had to take it to Jonas, she is trying to make

:25:06.:25:13.

use of the ring, to give her space. Watts not giving her time to set her

:25:14.:25:25.

feet, or throw shots. Watts keeping up her pursuit. Jonas tumbling to

:25:26.:25:30.

the ground. Inside the closing seconds. Again, the aggressor,

:25:31.:25:38.

caught with a beautiful right, left. Watts continues to take the bout.

:25:39.:25:45.

There has been some affective punch picking from Jonas. Effective

:25:46.:25:54.

aggression. Given that Shelley Watts took rounds two and three by boxing

:25:55.:25:59.

in that fashion, interesting to see how they score that round. Watts

:26:00.:26:06.

chose exactly the right tactics. I think she dominated the last round,

:26:07.:26:10.

not giving Jonas a moment's breathing space. She comes back with

:26:11.:26:16.

a straight left, did not get the count. It should have been account,

:26:17.:26:22.

she touched down. A straight left hand on the button. No count by the

:26:23.:26:34.

referee. Natasha Jonas, and Shelley Watts that -- receiving applause

:26:35.:26:43.

from the crowd. These will be nervous moments for the boxes in

:26:44.:26:46.

anticipation of the official verdict. -- for the boxers. Ladies

:26:47.:27:01.

and gentlemen, we have a split decision on the judges' score. Three

:27:02.:27:08.

to the quarterfinal, in the red corner, Shelley Watts. Shelley Watts

:27:09.:27:17.

through to the quarterfinals of the women's lightweight tournament

:27:18.:27:22.

having eliminated England's Natasha Jonas, the reigning European

:27:23.:27:25.

Championship silver medallist is Jonas, the reigning European

:27:26.:27:30.

after her first appearance at Glasgow 2014. Nice to see her

:27:31.:27:37.

receiving a rapturous applause as she exits the boxing ring. She has

:27:38.:27:43.

been a trailblazer, she is a trailblazer, an ambassador for

:27:44.:27:48.

women's boxing. It has gone in favour of the Australian, Natasha

:27:49.:27:53.

Jonas taking the opening round in unanimous fashion, but then beat in

:27:54.:27:59.

in rounds two and three. A split decision defeat, but Jonas has been

:28:00.:28:04.

eliminated from the Commonwealth Games tournament. The faces in the

:28:05.:28:11.

crowd say at all, real upset, a real disappointment for Teaming them. --

:28:12.:28:18.

for Team England. A shock defeat for England and

:28:19.:28:28.

Natasha Jonas. Tuesday evening, days six, but the atmosphere is building

:28:29.:28:36.

here even though it has got chilly. A busy evening of men's boxing for

:28:37.:28:41.

John in the Dell. I think it is the lightweights starting, plenty of

:28:42.:28:48.

home interest. We have a barrel load of boxes. Charlie Flynn, Joe

:28:49.:28:54.

Fitzpatrick, Josh Taylor, Sean Duffy. That is over the course of

:28:55.:29:00.

the first hour and a half of the evening. Very lively. As it has been

:29:01.:29:07.

every single session. The capacity is kind of four thousand. They make

:29:08.:29:17.

a lot of noise. Making a fair bit of racket behind me. When we have had

:29:18.:29:24.

home nation Jules, like a super heavyweight clash between England

:29:25.:29:28.

and Scotland, it really raised the roof. The great thing about amateur

:29:29.:29:32.

but, so much more than just punching, so much tactical

:29:33.:29:41.

awareness. So much emphasis on footwork, much more a tactical

:29:42.:29:48.

battle than sheer brutality. It is very loud already! For the people

:29:49.:29:55.

who are not boxing aficionados, a lot more to enjoy in the amateur

:29:56.:30:01.

ranks than the professional. What is interesting, unlike the women, there

:30:02.:30:13.

is no head guards in new men's bouts. The head guard debate is not

:30:14.:30:19.

about safety, it is about image. Going off at a tangent, a lot of

:30:20.:30:27.

people involved in golf would like golfers not to wear caps, because it

:30:28.:30:33.

is hard to see what people look like. From an awareness point of

:30:34.:30:40.

view, a lot of people in golf would love golfers, they would like to see

:30:41.:30:53.

their faces. That is why survey -- Seve Ballesteros was so

:30:54.:31:00.

recognisable. A lot of people in boxing don't want the protagonists

:31:01.:31:03.

hidden behind head guards, you cannot tell who they are, what they

:31:04.:31:09.

are like, what are their feelings and emotions, are they hurt? The

:31:10.:31:14.

counterbalance, a lot of surveys have been done by the governing body

:31:15.:31:20.

showing the likelihood of concussion, that is a big issue in

:31:21.:31:27.

sport in Rugby, American football, the likelihood of concussion is

:31:28.:31:30.

double if they boxer is wearing a head guard, as opposed to not being

:31:31.:31:36.

protected. Hence the fact they are not wearing them. The counterbalance

:31:37.:31:43.

is if they're not wearing a head guard, the likelihood of cuts are

:31:44.:31:51.

greater. It could impact on the boxer's prospects in the next round.

:31:52.:31:56.

Having said that, interesting how very few fights have been stopped

:31:57.:32:03.

because of cuts. The reason is, the standard of the competition has

:32:04.:32:09.

levelled out much more than in days gone by. People watching 10-20 years

:32:10.:32:15.

ago, they remember a lot of one-sided fight ending early, you do

:32:16.:32:21.

not get that these days, a much more equal playing field from the major

:32:22.:32:27.

boxing nations to the smaller ones. From an image point of view, good,

:32:28.:32:31.

from safety, it is good, but there is a lobby nonetheless to get head

:32:32.:32:38.

guards back in time for the Olympic Games in Rio. It is one of those

:32:39.:32:43.

debates where there is no right or wrong answer. The politicians are

:32:44.:32:49.

boxing will decide what to do with the sport going forward. As it is,

:32:50.:32:54.

we have the first boxes about to come into the ring. Time for some R

:32:55.:33:05.

and R, Ron and Ritchie. They will be commentating throughout the evening.

:33:06.:33:15.

The decibel level at the SECC, on the banks of the River Clyde,

:33:16.:33:21.

continuing to rise in anticipation of the opening contest. We start off

:33:22.:33:26.

in the men's 60 kilograms lightweight division. The man

:33:27.:33:37.

applauding, 22 years of age. He has grown in confidence in this contest.

:33:38.:33:45.

The man who has beaten him before, the contest was something to behold.

:33:46.:33:53.

Poise, considerable fire. Against Chad Mills, a hard punching compact

:33:54.:33:59.

boxer from New Zealand. 22 years old. Going to be a contrast of

:34:00.:34:13.

styles. Cordina has got the skills to win this contest. I want to see

:34:14.:34:21.

him using that tonight. It is a tough fight but it is one that he

:34:22.:34:26.

can win. These are the five judges presiding over the contest. Their

Milnes. The referee is from Belarus. Well, you just saw from the low

:35:13.:35:18.

camera angle as the boxers came together for the final instructions,

:35:19.:35:22.

the advantage in height and reach which is enjoyed by Joe Cordina. As

:35:23.:35:27.

we move into the opening round of this 60 kilograms lightweight

quarterfinal. Scheduled for 33-minute rounds. The boxer wearing

:35:32.:35:36.

red operates from the southpaw stance although he can switch hit

effectively. Joe Cordina, 23 from the boxing club which is operated by

Tony Borg. His opponent wearing blue from New Zealand is chair Milnes,

:35:52.:35:55.

also 22 years of age, a compact figure. Favouring short, arcing

:35:56.:36:01.

punches from short range, both of them are contesting their third bout

:36:02.:36:04.

of the tournament at the quarterfinal stage. Joe Cordina

coming out as a southpaw, that is tactical. Against and Orthodox

opponent who will struggle to land his right hand when Cortina is a

:36:19.:36:25.

southpaw. He then tends to bring his left leg around which then brings

:36:26.:36:29.

him onto the right hand, so he has to watch himself coming forward.

:36:30.:36:35.

Here now, switching back to Orthodox, getting a bit scrappy on

:36:36.:36:39.

the inside but I want to see Joe Cordina tonight boxing with a bit of

:36:40.:36:43.

skill and distance. He is very talented, Joe Cordina. He does not

:36:44.:36:46.

need to be mixing it up on the inside. Box at this terms and he

:36:47.:36:51.

will have the tools to win the contest. If he gets his tactics

:36:52.:36:59.

right. -- at distance. And arcing hook went in from Chad Milnes, it

:37:00.:37:03.

was wide of the mark. That is a good left hand out of the southpaw stance

:37:04.:37:10.

before moving away to his right. Continuing to operate as a southpaw

:37:11.:37:14.

for the moment. A good attack from the southpaw stance and then

:37:15.:37:20.

whipping into the body. The man from New Zealand is struggling to find

:37:21.:37:27.

his range at this point in the bout. At close quarters. He is trying to

:37:28.:37:31.

get his work into the body. The referee is not calling break, there

:37:32.:37:35.

is a new interpretation of the Olympic style boxing rules,

:37:36.:37:40.

remember. Now the referee gets some distance between them once again.

:37:41.:37:50.

With Joe Cordina boxing on the outside, he has two may be feint and

:37:51.:37:55.

draw his opponent to trigger him and make him come forward and then you

:37:56.:37:56.

can bring him onto the shots. make him come forward and then you

:37:57.:38:01.

is a good example, waiting, drawing him on and bringing him onto the

:38:02.:38:06.

shot. Good boxing from Cordina. As he

:38:07.:38:09.

shot. Good boxing from Cordina. As New Zealander will become frustrated

:38:10.:38:12.

and come over the front foot, he should do, and that will give

:38:13.:38:16.

Cordina more opportunities to land punches. This has been a rather

:38:17.:38:26.

circumspect first round but Joe Cordina has been boxing in great

:38:27.:38:32.

fashion. Colin Jones removes his mouthpiece and prepares to issue

:38:33.:38:34.

instructions. A very good opening round the Joe Cordina. -- for Joe

:38:35.:38:45.

Cordina. Yes, Colin Jones will be pleased with the work that Cordina

:38:46.:38:49.

has done in that round. Calling the shots there. He waited a little bit

:38:50.:38:55.

too long. That is where he needs to feint and draw his opponent. We are

:38:56.:38:59.

seeing that shot again. Cordina landed lovely punches in that round.

:39:00.:39:05.

I would imagine that Cordina has won the round. He has come an unanimous

:39:06.:39:16.

fashion. -- he has, in unanimous fashion. John Inverdale talked about

:39:17.:39:24.

the computer scoring system. As we move into the second round of the 60

podium. The man in blue occupying the centre of the ring, operating

with an orthodox stance. The man in red is Joe Cordina. That was a good

:39:42.:39:45.

uppercut and a left hook crashing home on the body and jaw of Joe

:39:46.:39:56.

Cordina from Chad Milnes. Sparring with the jab, getting through with a

:39:57.:40:00.

good straight left to the body. He will be aware of the fact he has

:40:01.:40:03.

conceded the opening round, his corner would have told him about

:40:04.:40:07.

that which is eliciting a more aggressive start to the second round

:40:08.:40:15.

for the man from New Zealand. It is crucial to hit and move and go after

:40:16.:40:18.

the side occasionally to push your man back and always keep on the back

:40:19.:40:23.

foot, the judges like to see foot punching as well. Some boxers prefer

:40:24.:40:30.

to work on the back foot but you have to keep the judges happy by

:40:31.:40:33.

counterattacking and pushing your opponent back and that is what Joe

:40:34.:40:37.

Cordina has to do. Movement is crucial, hold your feet and bring

:40:38.:40:43.

Chad Milnes into it. Cordina is getting onto the front foot.

:40:44.:40:47.

Left-hand whipped into the midsection. An effective response

:40:48.:40:50.

from what was a bright start from Chad Milnes. Now back as an orthodox

:40:51.:40:59.

boxer. Two shocks have been buffeted effectively. Keeping the onrushing

:41:00.:41:06.

Chad Milnes at bay. A left hook sailed harmlessly over head, over

:41:07.:41:12.

the head of Joe Cordina. He is currently Square. Now changing to

:41:13.:41:15.

the southpaw stance and they both exchange straight shots. His feet

:41:16.:41:22.

were a little bit too square, they just got caught, drawing his man in.

:41:23.:41:27.

He was caught in his own trap, he set the trap with his hands loaded

be in and out with his feet and then out again. Chad Milnes is continuing

:41:39.:41:46.

to hook away, left and right to the body, it is effective for the Kiwi.

:41:47.:41:51.

That right hand for Cordina was not far away. It elicited gasps from the

:41:52.:41:57.

crowd here. The final 30 seconds of what has been a competitive round,

:41:58.:42:01.

both boxers having their moments of success, can it produce a big finish

:42:02.:42:04.

in an effort to influence the judges? It is approaching the ten

:42:05.:42:13.

second mark of this second round. At close quarters but the referee

:42:14.:42:17.

allows the boxers to work away. Both of them take the opportunity to do

:42:18.:42:21.

so before retreating to distance once again. There is the bell to

:42:22.:42:26.

conclude round number two. Chad Milnes shakes his head, suggesting

:42:27.:42:30.

that he is frustrated after his bright start to the round but

:42:31.:42:35.

Cordina came back into it around a third of the way through. Cordina is

:42:36.:42:41.

still in second gear. A lovely right hook and he moves around. This is

:42:42.:42:45.

where he was caught. He went to square. As the round went on he

:42:46.:42:54.

started to find his rhythm, boxing in and out. Let's have a look here

:42:55.:43:01.

again. All of them going for Cordina, he is boxing well within

:43:02.:43:04.

himself, now he just has too see out the round. -- has to see it out. He

:43:05.:43:18.

boxed in Montr?al in 76 and was unlucky not to take the world title

wearing red. Joe Cordina switches his stance between orthodox

:43:42.:43:46.

southpaw. Left uppercut from the man in blue, Chad from New Zealand. In

:43:47.:43:52.

this round now, the Joe Cordina jab is the most important punch because

:43:53.:43:57.

you just have to keep him at bay, keep him off balance by using the

:43:58.:44:01.

jab, and set yourself up for the right hand to comb through the

:44:02.:44:04.

middle. The jab has today the work. -- come. He does not have to take

:44:05.:44:11.

shots like that, just hit and move, you know that he will come because

:44:12.:44:18.

he is behind. That work is being exhibited beautifully by Joe

:44:19.:44:21.

Cordina. They lock horns at the centre of the Ring and the referee

:44:22.:44:28.

issues the break command. In his opening bout Chad Milnes beat the

:44:29.:44:33.

man from Bangladesh by a unanimous decision. And he beat Lazarus

:44:34.:44:42.

showing the work -- Lazarus in unanimous fashion. Joe Cordina

:44:43.:44:48.

prevailed against his fellow home nation boxer with a split decision

:44:49.:44:55.

and then he faces a man with similar intent, Chad Milnes got in with a

:44:56.:45:04.

good right hand, Cordina is on the ropes. He comes back with a

:45:05.:45:12.

thrusting left which gets through. Cordina's second contest was a

:45:13.:45:14.

brilliant victory over David Gauthier, a man who had beaten him

:45:15.:45:22.

earlier this summer. That left hook was not far away. Cordina has to

:45:23.:45:26.

remain concentrated on the task at hand. A good shot from the man in

:45:27.:45:32.

blue. He is getting better but he is failing to take his opportunities on

:45:33.:45:36.

the inside, Chad Milnes. For a small guy, you would imagine he would

:45:37.:45:40.

fancy short-range work but he is tied up on the inside, he should be

:45:41.:45:44.

working better, the New Zealander. He is dangerous if you let him in on

:45:45.:45:49.

the inside. Cordina has a plan just to halt him. Cordina is winning this

:45:50.:46:03.

contest, remember. In the neutral corner, Cordina was caught with a

:46:04.:46:07.

couple of hard head shots from Chad Milnes. That was a beautiful views

:46:08.:46:13.

of the feet from Joe Cordina. Changing direction and hitting his

:46:14.:46:17.

opponent so often that he must think he is surrounded. Forcing his

:46:18.:46:23.

opponent backwards, he is on the ropes. A hard left. A sporting

:46:24.:46:30.

embrace between the two boxers. There is little doubt about the man

:46:31.:46:34.

who will progress to the semifinals, holding his arms aloft in

:46:35.:46:37.

acknowledgement of the plot that he receives from the SEC crowd. -- of

:46:38.:46:45.

the applause. Chad Milnes had his moments but they were fewer and

:46:46.:46:48.

further between the success enjoyed by the boxer in red. It was close in

:46:49.:46:54.

the final round but there was only one winner. Overall he was boxing

:46:55.:46:57.

better than his opponent, Joe Cordina. Better tactically. Caught

:46:58.:47:02.

on the ropes here and there. This was right at the very end but he has

:47:03.:47:06.

won the contest in the first two rounds. The judges have scored a win

:47:07.:47:17.

by unanimous decision, and through to the semifinal, in the red corner,

:47:18.:47:24.

representing Wales, Joe Cordina! Joe Cordina has got himself twice on the

:47:25.:47:30.

Commonwealth Games medal roster, unanimous points decision winner.

:47:31.:47:38.

Against New Zealand's Chad Milnes. The tune of Delilah is reverberating

:47:39.:47:44.

around the SECC. Chad Milnes exits the ropes, helped by Joe Cordina,

:47:45.:47:52.

but there is no mistaking the victor. Arms raised aloft by the

:47:53.:47:56.

referee. Joe Cordina from Saint Josephs boxing club, an enormous

:47:57.:48:01.

grin of delight. He got himself a Commonwealth Games piece of

:48:02.:48:06.

championship hardware. The only question that remains is what colour

:48:07.:48:10.

will it be, he is assured at least a bronze because both semifinalists if

:48:11.:48:15.

they lose in their final four contest will receive a Commonwealth

:48:16.:48:20.

Games boxing bronze medal. But Joe Cordina is applauding the crowd as

:48:21.:48:29.

he makes his way out of the SECC. Is I'm sure John will be keen to talk

:48:30.:48:33.

to the man who has just put his place in the final four. Good for

:48:34.:48:41.

Wales to beat New Zealand? Oh, yes, we play them in rugby all the time!

:48:42.:48:46.

You have a medal, how fantastic is that? Amazing, but the job is not

:48:47.:48:54.

finished. Until my flag is up, and the national anthem is playing, I

:48:55.:49:00.

will not be happy. I have two hard fights left. You are chefs, I have

:49:01.:49:06.

to ask you about the food in the village? I am not quite as chefs, I

:49:07.:49:13.

changed in college, I cannot eat most of it, I had to watch my

:49:14.:49:18.

weight. What is your favourite? I like to eat in Nandos, ie there are

couple of times a week. You have a semifinal ahead, well done tonight.

:49:31.:49:41.

stop immediately. Lucky not to have a knock-down called against him. He

:53:04.:53:13.

walked straight onto the shot. A relatively soft one can be more

powerful if you walk onto it. That was an example there. The 23rd

Resembling mixed martial arts there. A glancing left hand from Lartey.

:55:34.:55:39.

Lyn has to concentrate throwing this right and left hook as his opponent

is coming towards him. He will have a better chance of landing it. He

:55:46.:55:50.

has to try and trigger the attack from the opponent, bringing in onto

the left hook. When he's reaching, the legs are crossing. He is clever,

his man on the ropes. That makes his opponent's legs come square. Do not

:57:36.:57:42.

let him off there. Lartey skipping out of the corner, at close range

:59:36.:59:44.

their style on this bout? The scores are dictating the tactics. Flynn has

:59:45.:59:51.

to close that gap down. He has to get on the front foot, deny him the

room and the space. Sustain the attacks. But this man under the

Flynn, skilful little man with that right uppercut. He has to go

can get back to distance, we will see a firefight, five seconds to go.

As the bell sounds. Both boxes raising their arms. -- both boxers.
