Good afternoon, and welcome back to coverage of day

:00:43.:00:44.

The first gold medal of the games has been won.

:00:45.:00:59.

A fantastic performance from Jodie Stimpson. This is what is coming up.

:01:00.:01:07.

The swimming got underway this morning.

:01:08.:01:09.

No doubt a great welcome for Scotland's Hannah Miley

:01:10.:01:11.

The best of the action from the women's hockey, as England take on

:01:12.:01:17.

And we'll look ahead to the men's triathlon which starts

:01:18.:01:24.

at three o'clock, featuring the fabulous Brownlee brothers.

:01:25.:01:29.

And on day one, a feast of sport for you already.

:01:30.:01:32.

You can go live to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome for the track cycling.

:01:33.:01:46.

Online, we have rhythmic gymnastics, lawn bowls is well under way. Table

:01:47.:01:51.

tennis. Netball. And squash. But,

:01:52.:01:55.

before all that let's reflect on the Jodie Stimpson is the first winner

:01:56.:02:07.

of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a terrific performance. A

:02:08.:02:12.

wonderful scene, as she came around the final bend will stop she was

:02:13.:02:17.

pushed all the way by Kirsten Sweetland of Canada and Emma Jackson

:02:18.:02:22.

of Australia. A terrific reception for Jodie Stimpson. What an

:02:23.:02:26.

incredible performance from her this afternoon. She was pushed all the

:02:27.:02:31.

way. Wonderful moments for her, a terrific season she has had. All

:02:32.:02:37.

those months of hard work pay off. Terrific stuff from Jodie Stimpson.

:02:38.:02:42.

And very emotional when she caught up with Sonali Shah.

:02:43.:02:46.

Congratulations. You are Commonwealth champion!

:02:47.:02:54.

I don't know... This is all year. I have got to

:02:55.:02:59.

thank so many people who have got me through, it is awesome. To share a

:03:00.:03:10.

podium is so special with Vicky. The first goal medal of the games.

:03:11.:03:17.

Now, it is the boys's turn! I can't find enough people. It is not just

:03:18.:03:24.

by medal but for so many people. Darren Smith, to put up with me for

:03:25.:03:28.

so long. Thank you so much. I am sure England

:03:29.:03:34.

is sharing this middle with you all stop what was it like out there, did

:03:35.:03:43.

you feel like it was a home race? It didn't matter what catchy anyone

:03:44.:03:49.

was from, the crowd was fantastic. Running along this path, jam-packed

:03:50.:03:56.

with people, it was fantastic. We have got to talk about tactics.

:03:57.:04:02.

You had a breakaway, then let everyone back in on the bike.

:04:03.:04:13.

Pretty silly, to be honest. Lucy was there. We just needed a couple more

:04:14.:04:21.

to commit. We spoke briefly yesterday. We wanted a hard race. We

:04:22.:04:27.

tried, it didn't work. We tried breaking away. When Lucy went, I am

:04:28.:04:35.

not chasing an England girl. I knew I could run faster. To give Lucy the

:04:36.:04:40.

best shot she needed to break away and I wasn't chasing her down. It

:04:41.:04:46.

was up to the other athletes. You are Commonwealth champion, how

:04:47.:04:52.

proud with your family be? They are already crying! Everyone is

:04:53.:04:59.

here, so many of my family. After missing last time, they have got to

:05:00.:05:03.

see me in a Championship race. Great to see your tears of joy,

:05:04.:05:12.

congratulations again. Many congratulations to Jodie

:05:13.:05:18.

Stimpson. Just how emotional was she out there?

:05:19.:05:24.

What a result. Team Wales couldn't be here but this is the next best

:05:25.:05:31.

thing. Seeing two British girls on the podium is fantastic, I am

:05:32.:05:34.

delighted for both of them. Jodie really deserved that win, she

:05:35.:05:40.

fought all the way. And for Vicky to get onto the podium is a

:05:41.:05:45.

breakthrough. All the home Nations rivals but, at

:05:46.:05:49.

the end of the day, the home nations are also supporting each other and

:05:50.:05:54.

everyone suddenly becomes British. Jodie has won the very first medal

:05:55.:05:59.

of the games, especially after missing London 2012. We are still

:06:00.:06:23.

Team GB. Everyone is working as a team.

:06:24.:06:45.

Let us talk about the race. They had the medals handed to them on a

:06:46.:07:04.

plate, really. We saw Emma Jackson on the front, on the bike. Lucy

:07:05.:07:09.

tried to shake things up, but nobody followed her.

:07:10.:07:15.

Emma Jackson normally lives at the back of the bike pack. So it shows

:07:16.:07:20.

it wasn't fast. Great to see Lucy have a go. The

:07:21.:07:28.

best way for a performance is to create a break but it didn't pull

:07:29.:07:32.

off. Just to explain why no one followed, they did not want to use

:07:33.:07:36.

up their energy because they knew they could out one Lucy.

:07:37.:07:49.

Those girls are very fast. -- outrun Lucy.

:07:50.:07:57.

Flora Duffy has roots in Barrow, lots of support for her.

:07:58.:08:04.

Initially, there was a clip of Emma Jackson's ankle. Does that happen

:08:05.:08:09.

when you are racing tightly? It does, you are in such close

:08:10.:08:15.

proximity. It is annoying when it happens, it gets you out of your

:08:16.:08:20.

stride but it would not have affected the overall result.

:08:21.:08:24.

Let us talk about that finish. They dropped the New Zealander, Andrea

:08:25.:08:32.

Hewitt. Two goals on the podium. Vicky is

:08:33.:08:39.

more than delighted with that. -- girls.

:08:40.:08:47.

Your best friend, winning one of the medals, one of the first medals.

:08:48.:08:57.

I felt so emotional. It is weird when you are on the other side but I

:08:58.:09:02.

thoroughly enjoyed watching it. How do you think the British camp will

:09:03.:09:08.

be feeling about the race they saw out there today?

:09:09.:09:14.

Definitely very positive, it bodes well for the rest of the season, and

:09:15.:09:26.

in Edmonton. It is a busy day at Strathclyde

:09:27.:09:30.

Country Park. We still have the men's triathlon to come in a couple

:09:31.:09:34.

of hours. Like the women's race, England will

:09:35.:09:39.

probably dominate although we have 12 home Nations athletes on the

:09:40.:09:46.

start line. I think it will be the Brownlee brothers.

:09:47.:09:49.

They have to be clear favourites. They were dominant in hamburg ten

:09:50.:09:54.

days ago. I can't see anyone rivalling them for that gold and

:09:55.:09:58.

silver. Alistair, I think, followed by Jonny.

:09:59.:10:08.

The men's race starts at 3pm over on BBC One, do join us.

:10:09.:10:26.

Don't miss it. Great to see Non working for us on the BBC. Now,

:10:27.:10:29.

let's turn our attention to swimming. A great reception for

:10:30.:10:39.

Hannah Miley, as she began her quest to land gold in the 400m individual

:10:40.:10:45.

medley. This is the start list. Hannah Miley is the 2010

:10:46.:10:49.

Commonwealth champion, lining up against the Australian Jessica

:10:50.:10:50.

Pengelly. She actually competed for South

:10:51.:11:00.

Africa in the Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

:11:01.:11:30.

The commentator was just introducing the swimmers to the crowd, after

:11:31.:11:36.

about 25 metres, which was rather surreal! The 16-year-old going in

:11:37.:11:49.

first, ahead of Hannah Miley. The 16-year-old Canadian, trains in

:11:50.:11:57.

Vancouver, leading this first hit. Scots, do not worry just yet,

:11:58.:12:02.

because Hannah Miley should come back on the backstroke, and then,

:12:03.:12:08.

real strength in the breaststroke. Fascinating, she is not pushing this

:12:09.:12:11.

very hard. Let's see what she does, Hannah. I would imagine she will be

:12:12.:12:19.

a little bit faster than that in the final. But the backstroke and

:12:20.:12:23.

certainly the breaststroke is where Hannah will pick it up. But leading

:12:24.:12:29.

at the moment is 16-year-old Emily Overholt of Canada. Overholt going

:12:30.:12:40.

underneath a world-record split. She was world junior representative for

:12:41.:12:45.

Canada in the 200 fly. So, playing her strong suit in this heat. Now,

:12:46.:12:59.

trying to hold on. Hannah Miley coming back on her, this 16-year-old

:13:00.:13:11.

is having a great race. She is only actually two seconds outside of the

:13:12.:13:15.

British record pace, which is very fast indeed. So, this pace is hot.

:13:16.:13:25.

So, the halfway mark of this first hit of the women's 400m individual

:13:26.:13:31.

medley. Emily Overholt of Canada in first place, and there she is. But

:13:32.:13:42.

catching her is the 24-year-old Hannah Miley, and looking pretty

:13:43.:13:49.

good at the moment. Yes, we would expect this gap would be reduced,

:13:50.:13:55.

maybe even broken down. Also swimming well, the other Canadian.

:13:56.:14:01.

All three of these girls coming back into line now. Hannah Miley will

:14:02.:14:23.

want to win this, I think. Hannah Miley, starting to take over

:14:24.:14:38.

now. Leading by about a second, with the freestyle to come. So, Hannah

:14:39.:14:51.

Miley in the lead. Also swimming very well is the 16-year-old Emily

:14:52.:15:01.

Overholt, from Canada. Looking pretty comfortable now. She does not

:15:02.:15:04.

look like she is pushing it particularly hard. Coming up to the

:15:05.:15:13.

last 50 metres, just a body length ahead. Overholt having the race of

:15:14.:15:19.

her life, she came second in the Canadian trials. She is going to

:15:20.:15:21.

blitz her personal best. When you are a really great swimmer,

:15:22.:15:45.

it is quite difficult to swim it medium or slow. So, Hannah Miley

:15:46.:15:53.

winning Heat 1. A new Commonwealth Games record. A faster time than she

:15:54.:16:05.

posted to win the gold medal in Delhi. But that is only the heat,

:16:06.:16:18.

the final tonight will be a cracker. What sort of plan did you have

:16:19.:16:22.

coming into that? I thought 4.40 would have been good, and just for

:16:23.:16:28.

it to feel quite solid. It was great to have the girl from Canada going

:16:29.:16:33.

out, because it kept me on my toes. It was a lot faster than the time I

:16:34.:16:36.

was thinking of. It is all about the recovery now, trying to get rested

:16:37.:16:40.

and hopefully have a good race tonight. Did you enjoy last night,

:16:41.:16:49.

did you watch the opening ceremony on television? Only until the

:16:50.:16:55.

athletes came out, and then I had to get to sleep. Had one of the best

:16:56.:17:04.

nights sleep I have ever had. But it sounded amazing, and it is great to

:17:05.:17:06.

be part of it. In the second heat, Ellen Gandy, who

:17:07.:17:20.

won three medals in Delhi for England before switching allegiance

:17:21.:17:23.

to Australia in 2012, was lining up, but it was Aimee Willmott who won

:17:24.:17:28.

the heat, with Keryn McMaster coming in in second. So, let's take a look

:17:29.:17:33.

at this evening's final. There will be a terrific atmosphere

:17:34.:17:48.

in the Tollcross swimming pool this evening for that. Michael Jamieson

:17:49.:17:53.

also had a very warm home welcome in the men's 200m breaststroke, along

:17:54.:17:59.

with Ross Murdoch and Calum Tait, and also look out for the athlete

:18:00.:18:06.

from the Soto, whose qualifying time is more than a minute slower than

:18:07.:18:08.

everyone else. Murdoch is a great sprinter. He has

:18:09.:18:43.

got a good stroke. But we have all been waiting to see how Jamieson

:18:44.:18:47.

looks. It is one thing talking about somebody but you do not know their

:18:48.:18:51.

form. We cannot see inside their training pool. But a good, strong

:18:52.:19:01.

first 70 metres. And really, well, there is only these three in the

:19:02.:19:07.

race. They have just dropped everybody behind. Because the Aussie

:19:08.:19:14.

is out of it, really... They are doing some kind of synchronised

:19:15.:19:18.

things! Well, this is brilliant for Scotland. Jamieson, Murdoch and

:19:19.:19:24.

Tait, and don't they look good? Leading his Michael Jamieson, but he

:19:25.:19:31.

has not topped the other two. This could be wonderful for Scottish

:19:32.:19:43.

breaststroke swimming. That splits time was wrong, they are just about

:19:44.:19:48.

a second behind the world-record split time. But at the moment

:19:49.:19:52.

Jamieson does not look the best of these. Murdoch looks the best of

:19:53.:19:56.

these three swimmers. I think Jamieson probably knows he has done

:19:57.:19:59.

enough, but Murdoch is taking his opportunity. Five years the junior

:20:00.:20:05.

of Michael Jamieson, the 20-year-old, trains in Stirling,

:20:06.:20:09.

having his moments. He looks really good as well, Ross Murdoch. He won

:20:10.:20:15.

the Scottish Championships in the 50 and the 100, but look at this, he is

:20:16.:20:20.

swimming away from Michael Jamieson, and look at the time! My goodness

:20:21.:20:28.

me, that is a massive lifetime best! Look at his eyes! My goodness, he

:20:29.:20:33.

meant that! That is very, very impressive indeed. Ross Murdoch wins

:20:34.:20:40.

the final heat for the men's 200m breaststroke, and he looks super.

:20:41.:20:48.

So, look at that, a massive Games record for Ross Murdoch of Scotland.

:20:49.:21:07.

How did that feel? It was a strange year last year for you, just missed

:21:08.:21:16.

that record early on? I am in good shape. I got confidence from doing a

:21:17.:21:27.

good time after probably my worst training block I had ever done, so I

:21:28.:21:30.

am trying to use that as a positive, blowing the cobwebs out this morning

:21:31.:21:36.

and said Linda nerves. Tonight I will just try and... Hopefully the

:21:37.:21:39.

crowd will make as much noise as possible. -- settling the nerves.

:21:40.:21:49.

You have to take in every single moment, don't you? Yes, we had a

:21:50.:21:53.

team meeting, and that was what I said to the youngsters - do not be

:21:54.:21:57.

scared of racing anyone, take advantage of this crowd. After

:21:58.:22:03.

seeing the advantage it gave me in London, this is something you will

:22:04.:22:06.

remember for the rest of your swimming career, and after that as

:22:07.:22:09.

well. In the first of the three heats, it was all lies on Christian

:22:10.:22:15.

Sprenger, who is aiming for four gold medals here in Glasgow. But it

:22:16.:22:21.

was James Wilby of England who finished first, with Rob Holderness

:22:22.:22:26.

of Wales coming second. Andrew Willis was fourth.

:22:27.:22:38.

So, we have a terrific looking final ahead of us. Let's take a look at

:22:39.:22:46.

how Michael Jamieson will line up this evening.

:22:47.:23:00.

They are off at one minute past nine this evening, precisely.

:23:01.:23:10.

What a hit this is. Mack Horton, the fastest seed from Australia, goes in

:23:11.:23:22.

lane four. This is going to be fascinating.

:23:23.:23:29.

Let me just remind you how they are lining up here. Robbie Renwick was

:23:30.:23:37.

looking to seal a place in the final of the men's 400m freestyle. He went

:23:38.:23:41.

in the third of the heats that you were looking at.

:23:42.:23:57.

Two Scots leading the race. Nobody wants to be fifth in this one! You

:23:58.:24:10.

definitely do not want to be the Australian with the yellow hat. He

:24:11.:24:13.

has got to be massively careful. He should really win this. If here's

:24:14.:24:18.

not careful, he might miss out. Does not look good! This is very

:24:19.:24:24.

interesting indeed. My goodness me. Look at that. Milne WinZip. James

:24:25.:24:44.

Guy got fourth place. But Scotland, one, two, three. Obviously, the

:24:45.:24:58.

crowd is getting to you guys! Yes, people calling our names, it is

:24:59.:25:02.

really great. Were you inspired watching opening ceremony last

:25:03.:25:07.

night? Definitely. It really did help me a lot this morning. You are

:25:08.:25:14.

an old hand at this, we know you as a 200 champion, but that was a good

:25:15.:25:19.

400. Yes, still giving the 400 ago. I have had a good season of

:25:20.:25:28.

training. I am chuffed to get a one 23 with these guys. Do you think the

:25:29.:25:32.

passion makes the Scottish heart even bigger? Definitely, these

:25:33.:25:38.

youngsters, you watch them swim, it is fantastic. These guys will be

:25:39.:25:44.

around for the next four years. It is going to be a very exciting final

:25:45.:25:46.

- good luck to you. Ieuan Lloyd of Wales went

:25:47.:25:53.

in the final heat, heat four, alongside reigning Commonwealth

:25:54.:25:55.

champion, Canadian Ryan Cochrane. And the fastest man this year,

:25:56.:25:58.

Australian David McKeon. And it was the Australian who

:25:59.:26:00.

dominated this swim, Unfortunately, Lloyd was just out

:26:01.:26:02.

of qualification and will not In the second of this evening's

:26:03.:26:06.

finals, this is the line-up They're off

:26:07.:26:24.

at 16 minutes past seven. So this should be

:26:25.:26:27.

an amazing race for the home crowd England's 18-year-old Siobhan Marie

:26:28.:26:30.

O'Connor also got her Glasgow Games underway this morning at Tollcross,

:26:31.:26:39.

in the women's 200m freestyle. A natural racer, she is targeting an

:26:40.:26:42.

impressive five medals this week. Heat three, Sean McMahon is in lane

:26:43.:26:54.

one. There are no Australians or Scots in

:26:55.:27:13.

this second heat. They have gone off very quickly indeed. She has really

:27:14.:27:20.

gone for it. Hopefully, she can control it. It looks good. Spotting

:27:21.:27:27.

her turn. Looking forward, to make sure she was the right distance. It

:27:28.:27:32.

comes a bit more naturally as you get older. Boyle, a really good,

:27:33.:27:43.

strong, experienced summer, trained in the States. Now back in New

:27:44.:27:46.

Zealand with a former British swimming coach. The field is

:27:47.:27:56.

catching up a little bit more. A little bit quicker than the first

:27:57.:28:03.

heat. 1.5 lengths to go in the third heat.

:28:04.:28:12.

Siobhan Marie O'Connor had a quick start but the others are catching

:28:13.:28:20.

her up. Boyle, expect her to come back. This is good, solid swimming

:28:21.:28:27.

from O'Connor, still very young, just 18. She needs to hold on. First

:28:28.:28:33.

or second. It is a fast heat. There are no semifinals.

:28:34.:28:39.

A really good swim, Boyle is sticking with her. Look at that,

:28:40.:28:50.

just holding off, O'Connor from Boyle. A very good swim. Siobhan

:28:51.:28:57.

Marie O'Connor setting a new Commonwealth Games record, to win

:28:58.:29:04.

the third of four heats. On paper, the fastest heat is to come. This

:29:05.:29:09.

will put her in a decent lane for the final.

:29:10.:29:18.

A big cheer at the end. Fastest so far with a Games record.

:29:19.:29:24.

You look like you are informed. I was really happy with that. Always

:29:25.:29:33.

tough in the morning. I'm really happy with that. I want to push it

:29:34.:29:40.

on a bit more in the final. You are a busy person, have you got

:29:41.:29:45.

a priority? Every race is important to me, I

:29:46.:29:49.

want to do well in all of my races all stop fingers crossed. I have

:29:50.:29:57.

trained hard. I wanted a busy programme this time so I have given

:29:58.:30:01.

everything in training. Hopefully I am ready this week.

:30:02.:30:04.

Have a fantastic race later on. On the third of this evening's

:30:05.:30:12.

finals, this is how they line up Australia's Emma McKeon,

:30:13.:30:15.

who's the second fastest But a fantastic swim from Siobhan

:30:16.:30:19.

Marie O?Connor puts her right in contention, along with London 2012

:30:20.:30:24.

underachiever Wales' Jazz Carlin Another final this evening is

:30:25.:30:26.

the men's 100m free S9 category. Clare Balding will be bringing you

:30:27.:30:31.

all the final action this evening, To squash now, and England's world

:30:32.:30:44.

champion Nick Matthew has started the defence of his title against

:30:45.:31:05.

Xavier Koenig, a 29-year-old The middle of the game is very

:31:06.:31:31.

important. A beautiful fade from behind him on the back wall, an

:31:32.:31:36.

incredible shot from Nick Matthew. Dying on the side wall.

:31:37.:32:03.

Matthew, 7-3 up, leading by one game. Right now, looking very

:32:04.:32:14.

comfortable. Playing the ball around nicely. We have just seen Nick

:32:15.:32:22.

Matthew, in the last rallies, increasing the pace slightly,

:32:23.:32:27.

volleying the ball around the middle of the court. A nice hold. Yes, a

:32:28.:32:38.

lovely, structured rally from Nick. If anyone watching at home needs to

:32:39.:32:44.

see how to play a great rally in squash, that is the way to do it.

:32:45.:32:50.

He put pressure with the length deep into the court. He volleyed well,

:32:51.:32:54.

created the opportunity and put the ball away. A classic rally.

:32:55.:33:06.

A beautiful change of direction, using the side wall.

:33:07.:33:14.

Nick Clegg is in today, with Heather Deighton heavily involved with the

:33:15.:33:18.

Hong Kong Squash rackets Association, a wonderful input on

:33:19.:33:23.

the game of squash all around the world. Chatting in the front row.

:33:24.:33:32.

Heather, the lady on the right of Nick Clegg.

:33:33.:33:42.

There we go. Second game in the bag. Nick Matthew takes that 11-3.

:33:43.:33:52.

We are into this third game, Nick Matthew against Xavier Koenig of

:33:53.:34:03.

Mauritius. Koenig has put on a great performance so far, some great

:34:04.:34:09.

rallies, great shots. Nick Matthew in both the first and second games

:34:10.:34:14.

has tended to put more pressure on in the middle of the game. I think

:34:15.:34:23.

that is where Koenig has two focus. He had to concentrate, not let Nick

:34:24.:34:36.

Matthew increase the pace. Nick has come out here, really focused. Very

:34:37.:34:44.

quick. Nice change of direction. A super shot there. Well disguised,

:34:45.:34:50.

crosscourt, drop at the front of the court.

:34:51.:34:52.

Certainly starting to step the pace up now.

:34:53.:34:57.

A squash court you could argue is a relatively small area for two big

:34:58.:35:00.

athletes. When you go the wrong way, it seems like the biggest, like

:35:01.:35:07.

a soccer pitch. A great kill.

:35:08.:35:18.

I think we will see a different Nick Matthew in this third game. He will

:35:19.:35:25.

accelerate the racket threw the ball a little bit more quickly to take

:35:26.:35:29.

the ball very early. He's not letting up. He really wants to get a

:35:30.:35:35.

taste of what the later rounds will feel like. No mercy.

:35:36.:35:49.

A nice drop therefrom Koenig but the return by Nick, and some great play

:35:50.:35:57.

in the backhand corner. A practice money for a moment.

:35:58.:36:04.

A nice exchange. A change of direction. A tough rally for Xavier

:36:05.:36:07.

Koenig. Oh, and at the bottom. A lovely

:36:08.:36:15.

exchange in that front, backhand corner.

:36:16.:36:20.

We see the value of controlling the middle of the courts and getting in

:36:21.:36:27.

front of your opponent. As Nick Matthew did that and is doing again

:36:28.:36:35.

in this rally. -- did there. Again, with Nick, that

:36:36.:36:43.

early in susceptible -- imperceptible delays. Incredibly

:36:44.:36:47.

hard to read. Oh, great shot.

:36:48.:37:01.

A lovely crosscourt. The crowd cheering. Appreciating that shot.

:37:02.:37:09.

A wry smile on his face. A high-risk shot. Why not, at this stage?

:37:10.:37:12.

Nothing to lose. Matthew, taking a commanding lead in

:37:13.:37:36.

the third game. Certainly showing no mercy, he wanted to get this game in

:37:37.:37:38.

the bag. A great performance from Xavier

:37:39.:37:47.

Koenig. That was unlucky. A good effort and

:37:48.:38:02.

a nice smile on his face. He just slipped over there. But he managed

:38:03.:38:05.

to pick himself back up again. And another great length from Nick

:38:06.:38:24.

Matthew. He really has got the feel on that

:38:25.:38:29.

ball, getting it deep into the corner. That actually gives him

:38:30.:38:31.

match point. 10-1. And again. Another lovely drive to

:38:32.:38:49.

end the match. Nick Matthew. He takes that match three games to

:38:50.:38:58.

love, a great effort by Xavier Koenig. What a wonderful

:38:59.:39:04.

experience. Getting a lovely cheer from the crowd. He clapped his hand

:39:05.:39:08.

but Nick Matthew is the victor today. As I say, three games to love

:39:09.:39:28.

11-3, 11-3, 11-1. Congratulations to him but that

:39:29.:39:32.

victory. James will stop, silver medallist
