England v Montenegro Football: Women's World Cup Qualifiers

England fans arriving in Brighton for the latest match in their

campaign to reach the cup finals in Canada next year. They are hoping to

continue their winning ways against Montenegrin. For the first time in

16 years, England are playing a home game with a new permanent manager.

Mark Sampson, head coach, England women's football team. It was the

opportunity of a lifetime. I have to make sure I give the players

absolutely everything. I started coaching nearly 15 years ago now,

grassroots, women, girls, and more recently the super leeks. Champions

League qualification. Runners up. It has given me good ground. I want to

treat people the right way. Values and morals are really important to

me. Once you have a bike you can start educating people as

footballers. COMMENTATOR: Special goal. England

eight, Turkey zero. The challenge is not to rest on our laurels. It's to

see how far we can take it. I would be lying if I said our dream was not

to win a major Championship. I feel this team can win things. How we get

there and how long it will take we do not know. Or we can do is best.

It is about whether we can perform when it matters. And he takes over

18 in good health. We are at the a mixed stadium. We

have the team back together and the two of you aren't

colour-coordinated. It is a new experimental line-up for Mark

Sampson, his first home game in charge. What do you make of it? It

is a fresh start for him. He has been manager of pistol so he has

seen a lot of these players week in, week out. It is a new back four.

The team spirit and the work ethic are what he's working on and that is

His first one to engage the captain and he has brought in Steph Houghton

instead of the other option, Casey Stoney. Just a new approach, rather

than anything Casey Stoner has done. She made a transition from left-wing

to left back. I am looking forward to seeing both fullbacks this

afternoon. Hopefully providing the service that the shrike is need. The

teams are on their way. -- the strikers. Are commentators are Lucy

Ward and Jonathan Pearce. COMMENTATOR: : England have a new

coach and new captain but they will be expected to steer the same course

as before. They have hit 20 goals without reply in four matches,

against Belarus, Turkey and Wales so far. Mark Sampson should have a

winning start in his quest. He wants to inspire a nation. In his words,

he wants the country to fall in love with his team. He wants girls, in

ten years time, he says, to say they fell in love with football and

started to play because of this team he has out in front. There is the

player standing as captain for the first time on home soil.

that way, they were not snubbing England, it is their flag was on one

In the wide spaces, the young Sanderson there as well.

Mark Sampson's team has four significant changes to the autumn

matches. Demi Stokes is the new left back, to bring pace to that

position. Steph Houghton, we have heard, is the new captain. Sanderson

is back in the fold after refusing to play for former manager Hope

Powell. And Jill Scott gets a starting place. Nine of the

Montenegro players come from the current champions, Ekonomist. They

conceded just one game previously, appealing that it was offside. Seven

of those players are teenagers. The three West players, including the

one who scored six of their eight competitive goals, is injured. They

will probably be 4-1 - 4-1, as he saw. They should be totally

outclassed. Lucy. Yes, you would expect this to be easy for England

but they still have to be professional. They will be looking

to score goals and some of these girls will be looking to make their

mark in the World Cup qualifier. Sanderson is key. I have played

against her for many years and she is top quality. Since moving from

Arsenal to the States, she has improved. Her coming back, she is a

real top-quality centre forward. We will see some goals from her this

afternoon. Very experienced, the England group. The Montenegro

players, when they arrived yesterday, they were described by

some as a group of teenage girls on a school outing. They were taking

pictures readily. Their coach said, get the pictures out of the way, I

do not want to see cameras tomorrow. You are here to win a World Cup

qualifier. They only played their first international match a couple

of years ago, and under 17th match against the Netherlands and they

lost that match away 15-0. It will be a hard afternoon for them. They

are ranked 81st in the world. The referee is called Martinez Martinez,

so good they named her twice. Montenegro will kick us off, in the

red and yellow. Enthusiastic crowd, possibly not as big as the crowds at

Bournemouth or Millwall. That was for the opening games we saw in the

group. Armisa Kuc is one of the few women

who has scored in the team. She plays in Bosnia.

Across the goalkeeper, and England are in the lead after one minute! I

think they were unlucky not to score from the first cross from Stokes.

Sliding the ball through to Toni Duggan and exactly what England

wanted and Montenegro did not want. The keeper could do better. I think

that is just the script of the afternoon. One of the England

players who recently moved to Manchester City, Toni Duggan. That

is seven in her last nine internationals and ten in all for

the country. She has scored at this level in every other game. She has

been a major success for England over the last ten months.

Next season, when England are in Canada for the World Cup, they will

be against better teams than this. Infant's midfield described as a

three. It will be Fara Williams, just their in the centre of the

picture, who will be the holding midfielder.

A splendid save by Chamberlain. That is a wake-up call. It is. The

youngsters of Montenegro are not going to be nervous. A great ball,

caught a bit square. A bit of room on the inside. Siobhan Chamberlain

was Mark Sampson's keeper at Bristol Academy. No one qualifying in the

European section has had more shots on goal, any country, then Armisa

Kuc so far. Sanderson is back in the full and

playing for the 34th time for her country.

She finds players in deeper positions, with more space. Sensibly

done. Sanderson has gone in on the

goalkeeper fairly. It was a horrible moment for Zizic, but I think it has

been ruled out. It has been ruled out, initially, they pointed back to

the centre circle. The referee definitely indicated a goal first. I

can only think it was a foul on the goalkeeper, but I think that was a

little bit of a let off. That is never a foul. She did not really

touch her. However well Montenegrin defendant,

if the goalkeeper is going to do that, they've got no chance

whatsoever. She has played in all of the World Cup qualifiers and in

Champions League football. I knew it would not be long before

have a long-range shot from Williams. She has set her sights on

that goal and she has the quality to do it. Scored from the penalty spot

in Turkey in October in a 4-0 win. England have beaten Belarus at home,

6-0, Turkey, 8-0, wheels, 2-0. -- Wales. Whatever the quality of

opposition, the crowds have been enthusiastic. They beat Italy and

Finland and Canada, Olympic medallists, but were beaten by a

strong French side. The victory against Canada was a good marker. It

shows that they are getting closer. They are getting to be on the level

of the likes of France, competing at international competitions.

It should have been a second goal. In the end it was good defending.

Great movement. England are physically superior and technically

superior. They are fizzing the ball around for fun.

Aluko was simply too strong for her marker.

At times England have been defending with just the two centre have -- --

centre-halves. Alex Scott has always pushed forward for England.

They did have a shot a few minutes ago, but they will be camped in

their half, more often than not. Mark Sampson said he wants to

improve the team in certain ways. Playing higher up the pitch. The

goalkeeper looks very nervous. He has always played an offensive brand

of football, the New England head coach, high pressing game, read Jane

possession high up the field. It is just making sure they are

ready for the better teams who are tactically more aware and

technically better. At international level, you've got to be comfortable

receiving the ball anywhere on the pitch, and that is what he will try

to get to. There are better teams in this group

than Montenegrin, or Belarus. Turkey and Wales were sterner tests,

Ukraine is still to come. Wales have leapfrogged Ukraine in the table.

Bent it just over. If you give Toni Duggan that sort of room, she will

set her sights. She will be disappointed she did not get that on

target. Montenegrin have got to defend better.

They have already had five attempts on goal.

The manager described Houghton's qualities as a captain, he wanted

honesty, hard work, ambition. She inspired the nation in the Olympics,

2012. That is a great effort, deserved a second from Toni Duggan.

Better from the goalkeeper, Zizic. Down the right-hand side, Sanderson

with a really good assist. She connected with it really well. To be

fair two the goalkeeper, she kept hold of it.

I think it was said about the England team that the players have

got no fear and they go for it. The older you get, the more important

you realise how it is, you have young players coming in who plays

well, Toni Duggan, she came, Demi Stokes, Lucy Bronze, they look like

naturals at this level now. Mrkic played in the preliminary

group games. They defeated the Faroe Islands, they drew with Georgia and

they played Lithuania. England are fitter. Toni Duggan with

the deflection, and puts it in from the rebound. 2-0. We have been

playing 12 minutes. Similar build-up to all the other

attacks. England patient, trying to be as incisive as possible.

Unfortunate that it came back off the keeper but she is there to

finish it. Her good run continues. The keeper stuck out a leg and could

not keep it out. Only 18, in goal. She has conceded 19 goals in this

qualifying campaign. If she has played in the Champions League and

international is, she looks sometimes like she cannot catch it.

That is a prerequisite of any goalkeeper at any level. They have

48 registered adult players. The English FA has 31,000. OK, I take

the point. You cannot compare. But if you're going to play in goal... I

was not schooled in -- -- scolding you.

She has played in the Champions League as well. Played in a game in

August. It must take time at this point -- we must take time to

congratulate Birmingham, through to the semifinals for the first time.

Absolutely. Karen Carney, the captain of Birmingham, that is a

terrific result against Arsenal. They may have lost a few players but

they got players in. They had to beat them over two legs and they

did. It will be an interesting semifinal.

England players have made a hat-trick habit, Karen Carney got

one against Belarus. That is a foul. Very attacking. She

was a striker, early on in her career. The keeper saves with her

legs in the air. She looks very jittery. This is what Houghton likes

to do. Receive the ball at the edge of the area, she has a terrific

strike. Great technique. The goalkeeper does not want to use her

hands. Look at the space in there. We would

finish. -- bad finish. Disappointed with the finish but she got herself

in a fantastic position, completely unmarked. She steadied herself, and

just hit across the ball and it went wide. Great position. Which of those

midfield three in their, do you think Jill Scott is starting today

because of injuries? If you look at who started in these teams, I

suspect Jill Scott would have been the one. This is why she is going to

use today to show, you know, she is very experienced at this level, and

is moored athletic, taller, she does the rough stuff well. She is capable

of scoring goals as well. An embarrassment of riches. It is a

good period at the moment. Jill Scott has scored in two World Cup

campaigns, against Argentina in 2007, and New Zealand and France in

the 2011 quarterfinal. It is important to keep the experienced

players like Fara Williams in there. Montenegro sent out substitutes to

warm up, more experienced players, defenders.

Lucy Bronze played everywhere in the back four, now seems to be settling

down. I do like Lucy Bronze, she is athletic, technically good, she

could play any position. Well played, England. There was a decent

block in there. Eventually cleared away.

players missing. Especially the girl that tends to score all the goals.

A little word there with Jasna Djokovic who protested the decision

to give them this free kick. It will be the new captain who takes it.

Scored six goals for England. Again, the keeper saves with her

legs. Very unorthodox. Again, Steph didn't really get it

right in the corner. I think if she had got it in the corner it would

have gone straight in. England in the early campaigns were

playing centre halves in left back. Mark Sampson now has a player who

can become a leading left back. Right of each lost her bearings

there. A corner to England. Stokes has started this really well. She

can look at the next three, four, five years in this team if she gets

it right. A big Sunderland influence in the

England team these days, with Stokes now coming in. She had a spell at

Sunderland. I think there are three or four former Sunderland players in

there. They had a very good young team at one stage. Yes, we see the

fruits of it now at this level. Great to see a hotbed of talent in

the North East. The referee having a word.

Therefore the corner kick. -- England's fourth corner kick.

Blocked as she went into the penalty area. Might have run into mere

kitsch. The initial was a slip by Aluko. But it is important that

England do not start doing things that they wouldn't normally do

against a better team. A great run by Aluko. She was

blocked. Referees don't tend to give those. They don't even tend to give

a direct free kick. England are unbeaten in 38 qualifying matches

since they lost to France in the 2003 qualifying play-off. They have

scored 73 goals in their last two group World Cup qualifying stages.

It is key that they win the games like this but then make sure that

they are all tactically aware for the teams who are a little bit more

switched on. England unbeaten in their last 11

World Cup qualifying matches. They have won the last ten.

Should have finished better than that. These players are not used to

having such clear-cut chances all the time.

Look how much time she had to think about it and she ends up kicking it

straight at the goalkeeper. Used to playing under a lots more pressure

than that and producing shots on goal. She had an embarrassment of

time. 18 from UEFA will qualify for the

finals in Canada next year. This is group six. All group seven winners

won if I for the finals. -- qualify for the finals. Aluko starting to

pick up a bit of space to 20 lines, the 4-1-4 -1 of Montenegro.

A clever player. A clever lady, a first-class law degree from Brunel

University. England haven't made any use of the

corner. When it is quite easy, the players

have lots of time, Carney knew she could school goals from their, you

loose chances. Their finishing edge has been

blunted. It looks almost as if it is close season blunting. It still is,

club-wise. They come back April 16, the new format for the Super League.

Two divisions, now. Aluko hit the outside of the post.

Each time an England player has a shot from distance or from inside

the area, Aluko is now following up. Just unlucky there. Hit the

bar, really tight angle. You always presume the ball is going to come of

the keeper. You can always tell when she gets a centre half to take a

call kick. -- goalkick. It is interesting watching Lianne

Sanderson. She is a lot more selfless than the last time I saw

her. She is assisting, setting people up. She has played in the

States with top-class players. Mark Sampson comes from Cardiff. A

Cardiff farm as a boy. Five years in charge of Bristol

Academy. He did so well with them and was up in the Super League last

season and led us to Academy to two cup finals.

He made them into a very good team. He has done the same with England.

If you've got a manager, and players buy into his ethos, that is great.

He wants the team to be a team of good people who can set consistently

high standards. He wants them to lead by example in every area of

their lives. This game, hopefully it will be an example to the girls in

this particular part of the country to come into the woman's game.

There are 3019 is in Sussex. -- 39 teams. The Sussex FAA run festivals

14 is short of players. -- for the teams that are short.

England could have had six or seven in this first half.

That is three, and England get their just reward. Particularly pleased

with that, one of the smallest players in the squad scoring with

her head. In a good position. It drifted out, there is the run of

Jill Scott. Perfect cross and well guided by Aluko. Many good

goalkeepers could not have save that. Lovely goal, very well taken.

22 goals for England now. England are 3-0 up. I'm not sure

they will break the record today, which was 13-0 in Hungary.

I bet some of them here played in that.

I think Fara Williams is just getting a little bit of a taste for

it. She is drifting forward, she hit the post of the glancing header. She

wants a call as well. -- she wants to score as well. England have had a

team effort on goal already. 70% possession for England. I'm

surprised they have got that much. Montenegro will be glum when they

hear that England have kept 12 consecutive clean sheets. It is 11

years since they conceded a home qualifying Championship goal. It is

the standard of the opposition in the qualifiers, it lulls you into a

false sense of security in terms of what you are capable of, that is why

friendlies are important, so you can see where you actually are. Most of

these end up, except for playing against the tougher home nations, it

seems like Montenegro do not offer much. That is why the Olympics were

so important, the majority of players were from the English team.

Jill Scott with the drive. England have four. Good play from Sanderson,

good ball into Aluko. If you can just have an effort, the goalkeeper

is quite small, and Jill Scott worked that out. High enough to go

over so she cannot reach. That is a better finish. If you get it on

target you are more or less going to score today.

First goal of the qualifying campaign, her second start on the

road to Canada 2015. Jill Scott is a big character in the England

dressing room in every sense, really. Hollis girl in the -- the

tallest. It comes across in this group, very

approachable, good with supporters, they will sign things, have their

photos taken. The way these girls have grown up,

they understand their responsibilities as role models more

than probably any sports people I know, that is what they tried to get

across. Definitely what Sanderson is capable of, setting people up, but

that is her first real effort. Good technique, but just over the bar.

She has the technique to do that, score goals like that. Unlucky.

Stiff tasks lie ahead, Ukraine at home in Shrewsbury. They will travel

to Belarus in June. The game away in Wales will be

difficult. They have a very good player who

scored a hat-trick yesterday. She was at Bristol with Mark, she is

approaching world-class. Steph Houghton did not have a

world-class season last season. She had a couple of injuries after the

Olympics. She is the new captain, Steph

Houghton, has only played a minor role in the qualifying campaign so

far and was not guaranteed a start. She did not appear that much when

Brent Hills was in charge. If you choose a captain, you should...

That was simply swatted away by Demi Stokes. As I was saying, if you pick

a captain they need to be guaranteed to be playing, Steph Houghton will

play every game when she is fit. Mark obviously sees her as a

centre-half, somebody else will play with her. At the moment it is Lucy

Bronze. Interesting to see as we go forward.

It is interesting that Mark Sampson... We will talk about that

in a moment. That has got to be a penalty. The referee blew the

whistle to her lips and then said play on. Tourneur is given. --

corner is given. That was definitely a file.

It was Luke is wide -- put wide. They could have had seven or eight.

They have been profligate. Did not get enough power on it. Watch this

penalty again. Great feet.
