Nurburgring in Germany. It has been less than a week since we witnessed

0:00:590:01:09
0:01:090:01:26

that drama from Silverstone. There the rear tyres.

0:01:260:01:34

And it is Lewis Hamilton! The crowd watching cannot believe it. They

0:01:340:01:41

sent him on his way once again. Felipe Massa has gone off! Right in

0:01:410:01:47

front of Raikkonen. This is shocking. People have been having

0:01:470:01:54

punctures. We do not expect to see this in grand prix racing. Hamilton

0:01:540:02:04

goes for it. They will be side. Fantastic from Lewis Hamilton.

0:02:040:02:09

is a problem. He is in trouble. And Rosberg takes the lead at the

0:02:090:02:17

British Grand Prix! Look at Hamilton. He is going to take

0:02:170:02:25

advantage at the same time! The tyre has gone. They are side by side

0:02:250:02:33

through the corner. Wonderful. Mark Webber has done it. Hamilton down

0:02:330:02:39

the inside of Adrian Sutil. Hamilton takes it. Fernando Alonso sweeps

0:02:390:02:46

into third place. Hamilton takes fourth place. Coming from an

0:02:460:02:53

exploded tyre. This is tremendous from Lewis Hamilton. Nico Rosberg

0:02:530:03:03
0:03:030:03:07

has done it. Rosberg wins the British Grand Prix. Well done, mate.

0:03:070:03:13

So is strong when from Nico Rosberg, his second of the season. There were

0:03:130:03:18

top performances through the field but got overshadowed by that time a

0:03:180:03:23

story. Lewis Hamilton was leading when he had that tyre failure. He

0:03:230:03:29

made a great recovery. Mark Webber got pushed off. He was able to come

0:03:290:03:35

through. Paul di Resta got up into the points. So a lot of great

0:03:350:03:39

stories from the British Grand Prix which was overshadowed by those

0:03:390:03:44

difficulties with the tyres. But we do not expect that this weekend.

0:03:440:03:49

of course Sebastian Vettel, that failure, that has closed up the

0:03:490:03:54

championship at the top. There is not one driver or team combination

0:03:540:04:02

that is running away with it. So I think we're looking at a battle

0:04:020:04:07

between red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. Let us take a look at how

0:04:070:04:13

they stand going into the ninth round. Sebastian Vettel's lead

0:04:130:04:20

reduced by just 21 over Fernando Alonso. And just a couple separating

0:04:200:04:27

Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber in the red Bull. Mercedes made the news

0:04:270:04:31

in the battle for the constructors title. Overtaking Ferrari for second

0:04:310:04:40

place. Red Bull still at the top of the table. So let us take the walk

0:04:400:04:44

up the pit lane. Does that now put Mercedes in contention for the

0:04:440:04:50

title? Unquestionably. The drivers have a chance. For the constructors

0:04:500:04:58

it may be a long order. Sebastian Vettel had the gearbox issues. But

0:04:580:05:03

if the driver is can keep on top of the tyres then they can claw that

0:05:040:05:11

back. But for red Bull, with the constructors, they are running away

0:05:110:05:16

with it. At the start of the season it was all low-key with Mercedes.

0:05:160:05:20

And now the chance of getting the drivers title. They had the fastest

0:05:200:05:27

qualifying car. Any team would prefer to have a fast car. And then

0:05:270:05:33

work on controlling one element. You do not want a slow car and then

0:05:330:05:37

trying to make it fast. When we arrived here everyone was talking

0:05:370:05:47
0:05:470:05:48

about the tyres. Here is the story. We need to do something. Some day

0:05:480:05:57

there could be a really bad accident. It happened to me twice.

0:05:570:06:05

If they do not make the tyres savour, it is just unacceptable.

0:06:050:06:09

is only when someone gets hurt that someone will do something about it.

0:06:090:06:16

How close were we to getting the black flag with Mac I think very

0:06:160:06:20

close. It was a difficult decision. Difficult for everyone involved to

0:06:200:06:25

know what to do. We spent a lot of time analysing the tyres from

0:06:250:06:33

Silverstone. We allowed the teams to invert the rear tyres. When you

0:06:340:06:40

switch them around, Bayard directional. And those metallic band

0:06:400:06:48

inside them puts the stress on one point. We put another type of belt

0:06:480:06:55

in. And then we go back to the 2012 structure which gives you a bigger

0:06:550:07:01

margin. The FIA has imposed a ban on tyres swapping for the German Grand

0:07:010:07:05

Prix so the front and the rear tyres must be used on the site of the car

0:07:050:07:10

for which they were originally designed. Some teams had been

0:07:100:07:14

swapping them to gain a performance advantage. Teams have been messing

0:07:140:07:20

around with camber and pressure for years so it is nothing new. But

0:07:200:07:27

these tyres, they are too on edge. It is nothing to do with

0:07:270:07:31

competitiveness but all to do with the safety. Pirelli have a strong

0:07:310:07:35

technical department and they need to understand the issues quickly.

0:07:350:07:40

Teams will always push the boundaries. Some of the restrictions

0:07:400:07:45

are limiting performance so it is important to be there and for the

0:07:450:07:54

FAA to make sure everyone respects the limit. The car is where lapping

0:07:540:08:01

quicker in previous years. That is all about the tyres being loaded.

0:08:010:08:06

And that is a huge step forward. Do not underestimate the impact of

0:08:060:08:13

those loadings. Unfortunately, we had underestimated it. It was

0:08:140:08:19

controversial but the object of was to give them those loadings and

0:08:190:08:22

conditions. The Grand Prix Drivers' Association issued a statement

0:08:220:08:27

saying if there was a repeat of the tyre failure is then the drivers

0:08:270:08:34

would be willing to boycott the German Grand Prix. The bottom line,

0:08:340:08:40

you have new tyres ready for this event. And the circumstances that we

0:08:400:08:45

raced onto in Silverstone, they were not what we can accept. And should

0:08:450:08:53

they be repeated then we cannot race under those circumstances.

0:08:530:08:57

Motorsport is dangerous and we are the first to recognise that. Our job

0:08:580:09:03

is to make sure we do not have those issues. It is also the

0:09:030:09:05

responsibility of the team. So barely any time between races to

0:09:060:09:11

resolve these issues. Gary is at technical expert. Can you explain

0:09:110:09:16

the differences between the tyres? The front tyre is the same as at

0:09:160:09:22

Silverstone. The rear tyre, the material has changed. There was a

0:09:220:09:28

wire carcass beneath the tread to try to keep that flatter to get more

0:09:280:09:34

grip. They have now changed that to a different type of material. It is

0:09:340:09:38

tougher but not so stiff. It will change the shape of the tyres a

0:09:380:09:42

little bit. But it will be tougher. The teams have been operating

0:09:420:09:45

outside the preferences given to them by Pirelli. Also with

0:09:450:09:52

pressures. In my day we were tightly controlled by the tyre manufacturer.

0:09:520:09:57

Have Pirelli been a bit lax or have the teams taken it into their own

0:09:570:10:02

hands? The teams are going to push the limits obviously. Softer

0:10:020:10:09

pressure will give better traction on those slow corners. More camber,

0:10:090:10:16

again same reason. It gives you more bite. So the teams will push it but

0:10:160:10:19

Pirelli have always given recommendations. It is up to the

0:10:190:10:25

teams to apply that was step outside of it. I checked some tyre pressures

0:10:250:10:28

in Silverstone, watching the mechanics check them. One front

0:10:280:10:35

running team had different measurements in the front and the

0:10:350:10:43

rear tyres. Pirelli are saying that you need a minimum. It is a major

0:10:430:10:51

step but it will help. We mentioned running them on opposite sides but

0:10:510:10:56

with that wire when they run on the opposite sides it is just like

0:10:560:11:02

pushing on a piece of wire. It will just then. But if you push it it is

0:11:020:11:07

quite strong. So running on the opposite side contributes to that

0:11:070:11:12

problem as well. So this weekend they are not allowed to swap them.

0:11:120:11:15

What were the other factors did you feel at Silverstone contributed to

0:11:150:11:22

the situation? Well the curb has got a sharp edge at Silverstone.

0:11:220:11:27

that plus the tyres running the wrong way, the pressure of being a

0:11:270:11:32

bit low, it puts more load on the inside firewalls. And that is what

0:11:320:11:37

failed. When we look at the pic true is that with all, the inside

0:11:380:11:42

shoulder of Felipe Massa's car, Lewis Hamilton's car, both clear

0:11:430:11:47

failure is there. And we can actually see that failure. Doing

0:11:470:11:53

about 400 metres before the tyre actually failed. So the thing does

0:11:530:11:58

not always blow up. Everyone is contributing towards trying to

0:11:580:12:04

improve the problem. 19 of the left rear tyres did have cuts in them and

0:12:040:12:09

that is quite an extraordinary amount. It is and at the end of the

0:12:090:12:17

day, that could be two inches long, ten inches long. If you do get a cut

0:12:170:12:23

it still means that the tyre is flexing a lot and with low pressure

0:12:230:12:28

it flexes a lot more. If there is a cut that is where it is going to

0:12:280:12:32

fail. Pirelli have made a more durable tyre. Everyone else has to

0:12:320:12:37

make sure they abide by the recommendations that Pirelli have

0:12:370:12:41

set down. The FIA are going to impose strict controls this

0:12:410:12:48

weekend. Up until now Pirelli have given these recommendations to the

0:12:480:12:53

teams but have no way of policing that. But now the FIA have stepped

0:12:530:12:57

in saying that these are the minimum or maximum requirements. And they

0:12:570:13:01

have got the right to walk into the garage and check the pressures. So

0:13:020:13:07

it will be implemented throughout the grid. So David, moving forward

0:13:070:13:14

to this weekend. Who stood out in the practice sessions? Well red Bull

0:13:140:13:17

seemed to have been showing better pace in the practice session before

0:13:170:13:24

qualifying. That gives us an indication that it is suiting them

0:13:240:13:31

rather than others. Sebastian Vettel will be wanting to prove himself in

0:13:310:13:35

front of the fans. Every race is important. He would love to get a

0:13:350:13:42

home win. He is very popular in Germany and that would just put him

0:13:420:13:47

into the Michael Schumacher league. And a lot of pressure on Mercedes? A

0:13:470:13:52

lot of the board members historically come here. They have a

0:13:520:13:56

lot of employees and they expect to see the results. And now they're

0:13:560:14:06
0:14:060:14:15

used to winning. It is now time for The first segment of qualifying has

0:14:150:14:21

begun. No one in any rush to get out on track. We have the soft Pirelli

0:14:210:14:26

tyres being used and the medium compound tyre this weekend. Gary

0:14:260:14:32

Anderson joined us. Looking at what is going to happen in qualifying

0:14:320:14:38

today, some fast laps set by Sebastian Vettel. To use the red

0:14:380:14:42

Bull taking the edge? And also what the teams are being told in terms of

0:14:420:14:47

the tyres. The minimum stabilised running pressure is one of the

0:14:470:14:52

things and that is quite a high pressure. The more the pressure, the

0:14:520:15:00

more the tyre will slide around. And that will make some of them suffer.

0:15:000:15:05

Making sure that they comply with that regulation. The first step is

0:15:050:15:10

to get through Q1. What do you reckon you have got to do in terms

0:15:100:15:20
0:15:200:15:25

of the times? Well I think 31.5. go out for that quickly. Paul di

0:15:250:15:35
0:15:350:15:42

Resta, very familiar with the Number Theory. -- Nurburgring vment You can

0:15:420:15:49

see the elevation change there. is one of the DRS Jones come race

0:15:490:15:58

day tomorrow. They can use it in qualifying. Pastor Maldonado on

0:15:580:16:04

track now. Big 600 written on the side of course to celebrate 600

0:16:040:16:11

Grand Prix for Williams. We were talking earlier in free practice

0:16:110:16:15

that it may be a lesson to companies out there, can you read the 600

0:16:150:16:20

better than you can read any of the sponsors' logos. Maybe more

0:16:200:16:23

companies, well of course, then we get a close-up of the car. There you

0:16:230:16:27

go, from there, it stands out easily. It is distinctive. They are

0:16:270:16:34

struggling this year. It may be their # 00th Grand Prix - he's on

0:16:340:16:41

the -- 600th Grand Prix. He's on the soft tyre. Di Resta halls set the

0:16:410:16:46

pace on the medium compound tyre. That car twitching, turning in. He

0:16:460:16:52

was complaining on the radios this morning that it was virtually

0:16:520:17:02
0:17:020:17:03

undrivable. 3 1. 8, Garry reckoned mid-31 is where you need to be.

0:17:030:17:07

is a big drop into this corner. Not unusual to lock up the inside tyre

0:17:070:17:14

because of the way the irkit -- circuit cambers away from you. Wider

0:17:140:17:19

at the apex than he would have liked. Here. How will he compare

0:17:190:17:22

with the target time set by Maldonado. Bottas has done virtually

0:17:220:17:29

the same time. Sutcliffe is fourth. He's on the harder tyre. 32. 7 on

0:17:290:17:32

that tyre. They will have to go to the soft. They're just getting a run

0:17:320:17:35

in on the medium compound tyre. Williams one, two at the moment.

0:17:360:17:41

Buff they are in danger -- but they are in danger of not making it to

0:17:410:17:50

the second part of qualifying. There's no grip at all. Hamilton was

0:17:500:17:53

talking about that this morning. This is Rosberg. He's on the medium

0:17:530:17:58

compound tyre. Is the Mercedes quick enough to get through to the second

0:17:580:18:08
0:18:080:18:14

part of qualifying using the harder change here into this very long

0:18:140:18:18

hairpin. It's cambered in as well. You get a wonderful feel, not quite

0:18:180:18:26

like a carousel but it is nice feeling into the hairpin and into

0:18:270:18:33

what I consider to be the nice medium-speed chicane. Then it's

0:18:330:18:37

really great through this right-hander. Can you run up onto

0:18:370:18:41

the kerb and drop down the hill. the target time. No surprise there.

0:18:410:18:45

It might be enough for Mercedes to get through on the harder tyre

0:18:450:18:49

rather than having to use a set of the soft. Daniel Ricciardo has gone

0:18:490:18:58

quickest. He has used the soft tyre. This is a pretty good lap for

0:18:580:19:08
0:19:080:19:10

Rosberg on the harder tyre. He's second. 1. 31. 3. It may be Mercedes

0:19:100:19:14

can depend on the harder tyre here. That was a lock up from Sutcliffe.

0:19:140:19:24
0:19:240:19:31

He was talking about oversteer being wheel and probably lock the diff

0:19:310:19:35

slightly. That will enable the car to be more stable. Lewis Hamilton

0:19:360:19:42

out there now. We're looking at a replay of Rosberg. Hamilton set the

0:19:420:19:46

first -- fastest first sector of anybody. He's doing exactly what

0:19:460:19:50

Rosberg did, trying to do enough in the first part of the qualifying on

0:19:500:19:55

the harder tyre to go through to the second part of qualifying. That

0:19:550:19:59

saves tyres for later on. He's second. He's quicker than Rosberg.

0:19:590:20:02

That's interesting, because this morning, Rosberg definitely hot edge

0:20:030:20:12
0:20:130:20:17

between the two of them. -- had the Alonso goes fastest. It sounds as

0:20:170:20:27

though he might do a couple more laps. That's what his engineer said.

0:20:270:20:32

He's a tenth slower than this morning. Might have had a bit more

0:20:320:20:36

fuel on board. Though the tyre is slower, of course, with the track

0:20:360:20:41

being warmer. Lotus directly onto the soft tyre and a fastest first

0:20:410:20:46

sector of anybody for Kimi Raikkonen. Not running the passive

0:20:460:20:49

DRS system that they ran at Silverstone. They put it on

0:20:490:20:53

Grosjean's car on Friday morning, then they went for the slim line

0:20:530:20:57

bodywork at the back of the car. When you look at the back of the

0:20:570:21:01

Lotus, there's a lot of space around the rear wing. They want as much

0:21:010:21:08

airflow. This is a pretty good lap. It's a 27. 7 middle sector. -- 37. 7

0:21:080:21:12

middle sector. That's not the fastest. Plenty of support for Kimi

0:21:120:21:18

Raikkonen. He comes around to complete his first slap. He goes

0:21:180:21:22

fastest for the moment. We are in the final five minutes of the first

0:21:220:21:26

part of qualifying. You have to get into the top 16. Important laps

0:21:260:21:31

coming up here. Just one ran for the likes of Massa and Button trying to

0:21:310:21:38

save tyres. Kimi, 30. 7, so we think we're through. I would hope they

0:21:380:21:44

were through with that kind of lap time. Felipe Massa on the soft tyre.

0:21:440:21:49

Alonso is second quickest. It's about half a second slower than the

0:21:490:21:54

fastest at the moment. He's got Bottas just ahead of him. I wonder

0:21:550:22:00

if that will hinder him at all. Bottas is pushing fairly hard. Just

0:22:000:22:10
0:22:100:22:15

saw the Williams briefly flashing should be safely within range of the

0:22:150:22:21

next part of qualifying. Bottas has Grosjean in front of him. He was

0:22:210:22:26

backing off to try and get some space. We saw him locking up into

0:22:260:22:33

turn one. Gutierrez making a brake balance adjustment. Could be a

0:22:330:22:39

chance for Gutierrez to get out of Q1 and into Q 2. He hasn't done that

0:22:390:22:49
0:22:490:22:52

as many times as he would have liked going to be fair fairly marginal.

0:22:520:23:02
0:23:020:23:02

Five times this year he's failed to get out of Q1. Force India's are out

0:23:030:23:08

on track. They have gone for the option tyres. That first run on the

0:23:080:23:13

primes was to get them up to speed. Seen both Vettel and Webber do their

0:23:130:23:17

runs on the medium compound tyre just like Mercedes. The two fastest

0:23:170:23:21

teams from this morning have gone for the same strategy of running the

0:23:210:23:25

harder compound tyre. They've done enough to get through. Though

0:23:250:23:30

Webber, 31. 4, he's only just done enough. I wonder if they'll have to

0:23:310:23:40
0:23:410:23:41

send him back out. Di Resta, 31. 4 as well. Jenson Button does -- goes

0:23:410:23:46

6th fastest. His team-mate needs to do something. Sutil is in the drop

0:23:460:23:56
0:23:560:24:02

Sutil crosses the line and he's ninth. That should be enough. He's

0:24:020:24:08

safe. Rosberg won't be back out. He's done enough. Valtteri Bottas

0:24:080:24:12

improving his lap time, but is it enough? He should move into the top

0:24:120:24:16

16 briefly. But whether he can hang on in there when everyone else comes

0:24:160:24:21

out to do a lap, we'll have to wait and see. Perez seems to be

0:24:210:24:28

struggling here. He's 18th. That's not good enough. He has another lap.

0:24:280:24:33

If he can get another lap out of these tyres. Bottas has squeezed

0:24:330:24:40

into the top 16. Whether he can hold on. He's pushed his team-mate down,

0:24:400:24:45

they're evenly matched those two. This is Sergio Perez. How's this

0:24:450:24:54

looking? Short shifted to exit four. Great balance adjust. Again a

0:24:540:24:58

cambered corner into another downhill cambered corner. You can

0:24:580:25:04

hear the very late shift. That's the way they energise the exhausts and

0:25:040:25:07

blow the diffuser not as effective as in previous years, of course, but

0:25:070:25:16

it's still used. They rev these engines to get the perform

0:25:160:25:26
0:25:260:25:34

checkpoint. He's only just on target for 16th. He is on target to push

0:25:350:25:39

Bottas out of the top 16 here. It would be enough but he's not on the

0:25:390:25:44

same kind of lap pace that we saw from Jenson Button earlier on. We've

0:25:440:25:48

got the checkered flag out. This is going to be his last opportunity.

0:25:480:25:52

Perez, then, has he done enough to escape the clutches of the drop

0:25:520:25:57

zone? He crosses the line and he has. He's gone 14th. That pushes

0:25:570:26:01

both of the Williams out of the qualifying in the very first segment

0:26:010:26:05

here. Both Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado. Bottas has crossed

0:26:050:26:10

the line. Maldonado is still on a lap, but I'm not sure it's a quick

0:26:100:26:18

enough lap. Here comes Maldonado now. No, it's not enough. Bottas

0:26:180:26:23

outqualifies his team-mate yet again. Jules Bianchi, no, he hasn't,

0:26:230:26:28

Pic has gone ahead of Bianchi there right at the last moment. Great

0:26:280:26:32

battle between Charles Pic and Jules Bianchi. Pic just takes it on what

0:26:320:26:36

he calls his favourite circuit. Bianchi I think has finished his run

0:26:360:26:40

now. He's not going to do it. This is Valtteri Bottas down at the

0:26:400:26:45

hairpin. Just a little mistake. don't think that cost him too much

0:26:450:26:51

time. He hit the exit apex. Not good for the tyre if you systematically

0:26:510:27:00

keep locking up. Sadly, despite the celebrations of 600 Grand Prix for

0:27:000:27:04

Williams, has -- it has ended in qualifying early on. Both Williams

0:27:040:27:12

are out of qualifying. Let's confirm who's been knocked out. Pic 17,

0:27:130:27:22
0:27:230:27:29

to put it through to Q 2, what are the problems? No massive car balance

0:27:290:27:35

problems. The car was the whole week and it's been not that bad to drive,

0:27:350:27:40

just the main problem is lack of overall grip and lack of downforce.

0:27:400:27:46

So still the others are too quick for us and we couldn't get out of

0:27:460:27:50

Q1. Is there anywhere to make up time in the race tomorrow? I think

0:27:500:27:56

it's going to be difficult. Pure pace wise, we don't have the pace to

0:27:560:28:03

get it in the top ten. So, the best thing we can do is try to choose the

0:28:030:28:09

best strategy possible and keep pushing hard and race -- racing is

0:28:090:28:11

very long, you never know what's going to happen. We need to stay in

0:28:120:28:14

the race and hope that something special happens. Hope something

0:28:150:28:20

special happens too, thank you very much. Let's rejoin Ben and David now

0:28:200:28:25

for commentary. Here's Q2. The second part of qualifying gets

0:28:250:28:29

under way and there's a bit more hurry to get out there now.

0:28:290:28:34

Jean-Eric Vergne is the first to come out on circuit. Fastest time in

0:28:340:28:40

that first segment was for Felipe Massa in the Ferrari 1. 30. 5. That

0:28:400:28:43

was a second away from what Sebastien Vettel achieved this

0:28:430:28:48

morning in free practice. We'll have to see whether that's going to be

0:28:480:28:52

repeated because Massa hasn't reached Q3 in the last three races.

0:28:520:29:02
0:29:020:29:05

Operate qui good only a tenth out, 1. 3 1. 6, you said 1. 3. 1. 5.

0:29:050:29:10

Williams are struggling. They're the top teams that have dropped out in

0:29:100:29:14

Q1. I'm surprised by how people use the tyres there. We know the soft

0:29:150:29:19

tyre is a major step to the medium tyre and yet a lot of guys come out

0:29:200:29:26

to the medium tyres. Using two sets in Q1 is not the right thing to do.

0:29:260:29:32

Mercedes and Red Bull getting through on the medium tyre.

0:29:320:29:35

Silverstone Mercedes ran the soft tyre in the first qualifying and the

0:29:350:29:42

same tyre in Q2. They're probably trying to do is the same thing here.

0:29:420:29:47

The harder tyre is the most stable race tyre. You want two sets of them

0:29:470:29:52

at least. You were close on the first mark, what can we reckon in

0:29:520:29:58

the top ten? A tenth of a second out sorry. I think you're looking at 30.

0:29:580:30:03

8 to get into the top ten. There are a few guys there that ran are the

0:30:030:30:06

harder tyre and they're going to harder tyre and they're going to

0:30:060:30:07

harder tyre and they're going to harder tyre and they're going to

0:30:070:30:17
0:30:170:30:18

step up quite a lot. We were looking at forced and eight teams covered by

0:30:190:30:23

zero point ten of a second. So it will be close getting into the top

0:30:230:30:33
0:30:330:30:39

ten. That is what it is all about now. Daniel McArdle had that great

0:30:390:30:45

event at Silverstone, certainly worked for him. Toro Rosso not in

0:30:450:30:52

such good shape this time. conditions are a bit more tricky on

0:30:520:30:57

this type of circuit. I would be surprised if they can make it

0:30:570:31:03

through to the top ten shootout. But Jean-Eric Vergne has been pretty

0:31:030:31:13
0:31:130:31:19

good so far. He has raised here in the past. It is not as if he has had

0:31:190:31:29
0:31:290:31:33

to learn the track. We are on board with him now. You get into a hugely

0:31:330:31:38

high energy braking zone for the chicane. Then into the last ten.

0:31:380:31:45

Getting on the power as early as possible. He is fastest for the

0:31:450:31:53

moment. Is that going to be enough as we go through the rest of it? He

0:31:530:31:59

did 31.6 earlier on sell a definite improvement. The track temperature

0:31:590:32:06

now at 40 degrees. On board with Paul di Resta. No evidence of the

0:32:060:32:12

wheels locking. Then up to this final turn. Is he going to be faster

0:32:130:32:17

than the Toro Rosso? He looks marginally quicker at the moment.

0:32:170:32:27
0:32:270:32:28

is faster but it is marginal. wanted to come to you, Tom, in the

0:32:280:32:33

pit lane. This morning it was interesting the difference between

0:32:330:32:37

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton did not seem that

0:32:370:32:43

happy with his car. Absolutely. It was a bit of a repeat of

0:32:430:32:49

Silverstone. Lewis was not happy in the build-up to qualifying. But this

0:32:490:32:55

morning he was not .6 of a second behind his team-mate. I think he

0:32:550:32:59

will take confidence from that lap that he did in Q1. He had been

0:32:590:33:07

complaining yesterday of understeer. The car looked quite stable during

0:33:070:33:15

the Q1 session. So hopefully he is on to a good thing. Well Kimi

0:33:150:33:20

Raikkonen now, this is better from him. He took his first ever pole

0:33:200:33:29

position right here ten years ago. This was Nico Rosberg a moment ago.

0:33:290:33:38

Down into turn one. Locks out. He could have flat spotted that tyre

0:33:380:33:48

aiming for the Apec. His team-mate Lewis Hamilton is fastest of all in

0:33:480:33:53

the first sector. We will just follow him around the rest of the

0:33:530:33:58

lap. He is on the soft tyres, not the medium tyres that are used in

0:33:580:34:04

the first part of qualifying. Kimi Raikkonen fastest at the moment in

0:34:040:34:11

the Lotus. Hamilton is quicker than that. On target for a better lap.

0:34:110:34:17

Not necessarily pushing to the ultimate limit. The main task is to

0:34:170:34:21

get into the top ten and that is when they really go for it. Of

0:34:210:34:25

course he is trying to get back to back pole positions. He comes across

0:34:250:34:35
0:34:350:34:37

the line. 1.30.1. It looked like he opened the doctors quite late and

0:34:370:34:42

that could have cost him some time. The driver has to call for the

0:34:420:34:47

activation. We are seeing the same kind of time differences that we

0:34:470:34:53

have seen all day. Just not able to exploit the performance of the

0:34:530:35:01

Ferrari so far. The track temperature climbing all the time.

0:35:010:35:08

Alonso goes third with that. If fraction of the Lotus. Lotus and

0:35:080:35:15

Ferrari, very similar paces from the car this morning. But a little off

0:35:150:35:21

what Mercedes and Red Bull can do. We take another look at Nico

0:35:210:35:27

Rosberg. Is he faster than Hamilton? He is one tenth down on

0:35:270:35:32

Hamilton to that second checkpoint. Can you make that up in the final

0:35:320:35:37

sector was Mike you absolutely can. It is all about the change of

0:35:370:35:42

direction. On this last corner you are braking all the way in. And

0:35:420:35:47

immediately on the power. You have to be very comfortable putting on

0:35:470:35:51

the lateral load through the town. He does not quite make up the time.

0:35:510:35:57

He is second. These lap times are looking very strong for the moment.

0:35:580:36:04

He is safely through. He will not have worry about going back out.

0:36:040:36:11

Looking at a replay of Rosberg, Peres only made it into the top 16.

0:36:110:36:16

He is now out on track. Getting a little busier out there with just

0:36:160:36:22

over seven minutes to go. Kimi Raikkonen currently four tenths down

0:36:220:36:29

on Hamilton who is on a new set of tyres. That is interesting to hear

0:36:290:36:38

for Lotus. Grojean currently fastest. Both the Lotus cars going

0:36:380:36:48
0:36:480:36:49

well. There are two doctors zones. Red Bull get ready to send both cars

0:36:490:36:59
0:36:590:37:05

out. Jensen Button, that time only good enough for tenths. Peres spent

0:37:050:37:10

his early racing career in Germany after his initial first laps in

0:37:100:37:16

Mexico and the United states. But as he crosses the line he is in 14th.

0:37:160:37:23

So his circuit knowledge not helping him at all. Quite some way of what

0:37:230:37:30

Jensen Button did. Just a small lock-up into the hairpin. We will

0:37:300:37:39

see a lot of that. Both the McLaren cars slower at than they managed in

0:37:390:37:49
0:37:490:37:57

the first session. Mark Webber, almost the same gap. It is Hamilton

0:37:570:38:06

who has the fastest overall lap time. It is who is going to get into

0:38:060:38:11

the top ten that we are looking at. We would expect of battle and Webber

0:38:110:38:18

to be in there. He was early on the power. The contrast in performance

0:38:180:38:21

between the Red Bull and the McLaren, clearly struggling with

0:38:210:38:28

understeer. Virtually identical lap times for Mark Webber and Sebastian

0:38:280:38:34

Vettel. Very little to choose between them. Are they going to be

0:38:340:38:41

the Mercedes times? Vettel goes fastest. But Mark Webber has done

0:38:410:38:51
0:38:510:38:58

something very similar. It is 1.3 at the moment. His first sector was not

0:38:580:39:03

too bad but there is masses of oversteer. So a bit more performance

0:39:030:39:11

to come from the Red Bull. But is that that says it is that last

0:39:110:39:18

sector that is the problem. In the morning session he lost the time in

0:39:180:39:24

the middle. And now seems to be putting a lap together here which

0:39:240:39:28

will put Sebastian Vettel's time under threat. Lotus have been

0:39:280:39:34

confident all weekend. Grojean goes across the line, second fastest.

0:39:340:39:43

Again it is that last sector. not going to see Mark back out.

0:39:430:39:53
0:39:530:39:54

Hamilton fastest of all in that last sector. Grojean dropped a couple of

0:39:540:40:04
0:40:040:40:06

tenths. A lot of reaction to the curb through that she came. He

0:40:060:40:10

should be getting the car as straight as possible for the exit.

0:40:100:40:16

Showing some great pace for the Lotus. We are looking at Fernando

0:40:160:40:21

Alonso now as he comes up to that second check point. These higher

0:40:210:40:26

temperatures do seem to be switching things the way of Lotus and Ferrari.

0:40:260:40:31

And they are now right in the mix. Let us see how the end this lap.

0:40:310:40:39

There is not much to it. A slight hesitance there before opening the

0:40:390:40:49
0:40:490:40:50

power. He is fastest. 1.29.9. The battle is for the top ten at the

0:40:500:41:00
0:41:000:41:03

moment. At the moment there is is up on his lap to get into the top ten.

0:41:030:41:10

But Felipe Massa is fastest of anybody so far in this session to

0:41:100:41:20
0:41:200:41:21

the second checkpoint. Paul di Resta is in danger. I think he is going to

0:41:210:41:29

have to run again. Felipe Massa goes fastest, great lap from him. Ferrari

0:41:290:41:35

showing great pace. The chequered flag about to come out. We have

0:41:350:41:43

several cars on laps. And in the final stages. Including Daniel

0:41:430:41:48

Riccardo who may just get into the top ten. He pushes out his own

0:41:480:41:56

team-mate. That is so significant. Here comes Jensen Button. He goes

0:41:560:42:04

into a disposition. Kimi Raikkonen now in danger. But he has just gone

0:42:040:42:07

fastest of anyone in the first sector. Di Resta being pushed down

0:42:070:42:13

and it looks as if he is out of it. Hulkenberg has gone up to eight in

0:42:130:42:19

the cyber will stop that has rarely been in the top ten this year. That

0:42:190:42:26

is dangerous territory for Rosberg. Let us just see what happens. Adrian

0:42:260:42:35

Sutil is out. Rosberg could be out. Rosberg in danger. Raikkonen up to

0:42:350:42:41

second. And Rosberg has been squeezed out of the top ten. What

0:42:410:42:47

have Mercedes done here? The German driver in the German car, an

0:42:470:42:52

opportunity to be the first ever German driver in a German card to

0:42:520:42:58

get pole position in a German bomb pre-. The team have known it because

0:42:580:43:04

he was not out at the end to defend his own position. Mossberg is out.

0:43:040:43:10

The most dramatic knockout, Rosberg is out. So is Paul di Resta. Peres

0:43:100:43:18

is out. Gutierrez is out. Adrian Sutil is out and so is Jean-Eric

0:43:180:43:23

Vergne. Did you think you had a chance of

0:43:230:43:30

going through to Q3 today? Not really. This week I just cannot get

0:43:300:43:36

the card dial into how I like it. I have struggled. I think it was more

0:43:360:43:46

damage limitation. Why do you think you have problems here in

0:43:460:43:51

particular? I do not know. It is just getting the car balanced.

0:43:510:43:57

Everything seemed to be a compromise. The baseline seems to be

0:43:570:44:02

where we are. We need to work on it because some of our competitors have

0:44:020:44:09

got more of an advantage. So there is a lot of work to do tomorrow.

0:44:090:44:18

Fingers crossed. It is time for Q3.

0:44:180:44:24

Following free pack this this morning we thought it would be a

0:44:240:44:27

straight fight between Mercedes and Red Bull. But the increase in

0:44:270:44:33

temperature have brought Red Bull and Ferrari into the mix. I think

0:44:330:44:38

that is a fair conclusion. Nico Rosberg definitely suffered from the

0:44:380:44:48
0:44:480:44:52

track improving just that little bit. Some of those lap times, we

0:44:520:44:59

have never even seen anything like it over the weekend. He was saying

0:44:590:45:06

30.8 but in the end the cut-off was a lot quicker. Up until the last

0:45:060:45:12

minute of time I thought 30.8 was going to be it. But guys suddenly

0:45:120:45:16

who have never done anywhere near that lap time, the track suddenly

0:45:160:45:21

seemed to get better. The wind has changed direction and perhaps that

0:45:210:45:26

has made a difference. It makes a major contribution around here.

0:45:270:45:34

do not want to get a tailwind in the middle of a long corner.

0:45:340:45:44
0:45:440:45:44

predictions for pole position? They've used two new sets of tyres,

0:45:440:45:51

get the temperatures into the brakes. I'd be look at a 29. 1 for

0:45:510:45:55

pole. It's ambitious, but that's the area we're going into. We'll have to

0:45:550:46:00

see. He's got lots of supporters has Fernando Alonso. Twice a winner

0:46:000:46:06

here. He had that one pole position. In qualifying so far this year he

0:46:060:46:12

hasn't had a single fronted-row start. Hills best is a few third --

0:46:120:46:18

his best is a few third places. He hasn't been top five on the grid in

0:46:180:46:25

the last three Grand Prixes. Sebastien Vettel is on a new set of

0:46:250:46:31

tyres, so is Mark Webber. We are looking at Kimi Raikkonen now.

0:46:310:46:37

Through ten, uses the KER on exit. DRS wide-open along the back

0:46:370:46:42

straight. He'll be up to about 190mph by the time he buzzes into

0:46:420:46:46

the limiter before braking for the chicane. He's gone within in

0:46:460:46:49

qualifying here in the past. He should have won the race in several

0:46:490:46:57

occasions, 2003, 2005, he was in lead position and things -- 2005, he

0:46:570:47:02

was in lead position and things went wrong for him. That's 1. 29. 9. Not

0:47:020:47:07

as fast as Massa in the second part of qualifying. Quick reminder that

0:47:070:47:10

Felipe Massa has topped both qualifying segments so far. The

0:47:100:47:16

Brazilian driving really well. But Vettel now quicker with a 1. 29. 6.

0:47:160:47:20

Raikkonen pushed back to second. Grosjean is third. It's interesting,

0:47:200:47:24

Hamilton fastest of all in the first sector. He's a couple of tenths down

0:47:240:47:29

on Vettel's pace in the middle. That neutralises the gain he has over

0:47:290:47:32

Vettel in the first sector. Webber going third, but here comes

0:47:320:47:37

Hamilton. This could be close. Hamilton's lap is looking good. Yes,

0:47:370:47:45

it is! 1. 29. 5 for Lewis Hamilton, on a new set of soft tyres. He's

0:47:450:47:48

faster than Sebastien Vettel. Raikkonen's time a bit off that but

0:47:480:47:53

on a used set of tyres. Raikkonen may have performance in hand there.

0:47:530:47:58

He's in the hunt for pole position today. Mark Webber is fourth. Romain

0:47:580:48:02

Grosjean fifth. Which tyre is Jenson Button on? He's on the soft. Tom, I

0:48:020:48:06

know you were speaking to a few of the teams after free practice, from

0:48:060:48:10

what you were learning, we might not necessarily see everyone use the

0:48:100:48:14

soft tyre in this session. Absolutely right. It's going to be

0:48:140:48:19

fascinating to see what the Ferraris come back out on. Because the soft

0:48:190:48:25

is a much faster tyre if you can qualify in pole position, but you

0:48:250:48:30

risk, if you're only starting in the latter part of the top ten, you risk

0:48:300:48:40
0:48:400:48:41

coming out of the first pitstop in traffic. It will be interesting to

0:48:410:48:46

see what Ferrari and Lotus do. China Red Bull tried that. Sebastien

0:48:460:48:50

Vettel didn't do a lap on the faster tyre. He chose the medium tyre.

0:48:510:48:54

Didn't set a lap at all and did a long first stint. It didn't work for

0:48:550:48:58

him on that occasion. It was Fernando Alonso who won the Chinese

0:48:580:49:05

Grand Prix starting on the soft tyre. But we damageary Alonso -- we

0:49:050:49:13

damage damage -- gather Lanza is on that tyre. -- Alonso. Jenson Button

0:49:130:49:17

continues around the lap. We're not expecting him to leap to the top.

0:49:170:49:21

Solid top-ten start is what McLaren will be hoping for. They'll be

0:49:210:49:31
0:49:310:49:35

reasonably satisfied with the way on the medium compound tyre. I think

0:49:350:49:40

Jenson has given up on this lap. That's interesting. Is he going

0:49:400:49:45

again? No. He's coming back into the pits. Hasn't done a lap. If he came

0:49:450:49:49

out on the medium tyres and do a time, then he still would choose to

0:49:500:49:56

start on the medium Tour. He's not actually decided yet. Tom? Ben, I'm

0:49:560:50:02

just by the McLaren pit now. They're putting a set of medium tyres ready.

0:50:020:50:09

We're dropping the rear pressures a bit again. Lots of strategy here.

0:50:090:50:12

It's all about the race tomorrow. It's not necessarily about being the

0:50:120:50:16

king of qualifying today. There you are, the medium compound tyre on the

0:50:170:50:25

Ferrari. That's a good spot, Tom. A few people are following that

0:50:250:50:29

strategy, concentrating on where they can get the maximum points

0:50:290:50:34

tomorrow. Mark Webber is going with a set of the sosts. It's very

0:50:340:50:41

interesting -- softs. It's very interesting Ferrari deciding not to

0:50:410:50:46

go for the the ultimate lap time. They are totally focussed on the

0:50:460:50:50

race here. We know the medium compound tyre is probably a second a

0:50:500:50:55

lap slower than the yellow-walled soft tyre. I wonder if he'll put in

0:50:550:51:00

a really attacking lap or just do a gentle lap to set a time. Just put a

0:51:000:51:06

heat soak through the tyres. He does appear to be quite gentle. He's

0:51:060:51:11

doing exactly that. He's putting the tyres through that heat cycle which

0:51:110:51:16

will cure the rubber slightly when they sit in the blankets overnight.

0:51:160:51:20

They won't be switched on. They go cold and get switched on again

0:51:200:51:23

tomorrow morning, brought up to temperature, ready for the race.

0:51:230:51:28

Looks as though it's just the three of them, Alonso, Massa and Button,

0:51:280:51:32

using the medium compound tyre. Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg

0:51:320:51:39

are on the soft. I'd be surprise today we can beat the Ferraris guys.

0:51:390:51:45

The McLaren is unlikely to be quicker than the far oarery on the

0:51:450:51:50

medium compound tyre, so is it worth using the tyre? Jenson should know

0:51:500:51:55

what he should expect to do on that compound of tyre. He's just done a

0:51:550:51:58

very slow sector has Jenson. I wonder if he will just come back in.

0:51:580:52:03

He doesn't have to set a time. Sebastien Vettel wide at turn one.

0:52:030:52:10

He gets away with it, but it's a short run to two. Runs wide on the

0:52:100:52:20

exit to two. He uses more of the kerb at the apex. It's certainly not

0:52:200:52:27

been clean. 29. 4 it's two tenths slower than Hamilton in that sector.

0:52:270:52:32

No improvement in the first sector with the new tyres over last time

0:52:320:52:37

out. It will come down to sectors two and three if he gets pole this

0:52:370:52:42

afternoon. Will he outqualify web ebb here -- Webber here, which he

0:52:420:52:46

hasn't done in the past. He's yet to win his home Grand Prix. A bit of

0:52:460:52:49

pressure on Sebastien Vettel's shoulders. The first tarring set to

0:52:490:52:55

beat the ultimate -- target is to beat the ultimate time set by

0:52:550:53:05
0:53:050:53:07

fraction of a second. It's slightly slower than his best middle sector

0:53:070:53:17
0:53:170:53:22

slower than his best middle sector crosses the line and he goes

0:53:220:53:27

fastest! But we still have other cars. Hamilton is on a quick lap.

0:53:270:53:32

He's gone faster than anybody in the first sector. Mark Webber with a

0:53:320:53:36

good first sector. Romain Grosjean is one to keep an eye on. He's out

0:53:360:53:41

there. Kimi Raikkonen not going quickly at the moment. Webber is up.

0:53:410:53:46

Grosjean slow in the first sector, but fast in the middle sectors. I

0:53:460:53:50

don't think Grosjean is in it for the pole. Has crossed the line in

0:53:510:53:55

third. Grosjean is fourth. The two Lotus have done well. Who will take

0:53:550:54:00

pole position - Hamilton is on a great lap. Mark Webber trying to

0:54:000:54:03

beat the time set by Sebastien Vettel. He can't. He's third. He's

0:54:030:54:07

behind Hamilton. So it's all down to Hamilton now. Can he claim pole

0:54:070:54:12

position like he did a week ago at Silverstone? Can he take it back

0:54:120:54:19

from Sebastien Vettel? He's done it! Lewis Hamilton takes back-to-back

0:54:190:54:23

pole positions. The British Grand Prix and the German Grand Prix. He

0:54:230:54:31

has now earned his 29th career pole position. He has matched the great

0:54:310:54:37

Fangio with that. For Mercedes they have taken pole position here, first

0:54:370:54:42

time since 1954 that Mercedes have taken pole position on home turf.

0:54:420:54:47

He's the first British driver, well, let's listen. That's what I'm

0:54:470:54:55

talking about, Lewis. P 1, top job! A tenth faster than Vettel. You can

0:54:550:54:59

hear the delight in the background. He's the first British drier to do

0:54:590:55:05

it here since you did in 2000. used to hearing Lewis saying" That's

0:55:050:55:10

what I'm talking about". Not so much rolling off the tongue from his

0:55:100:55:15

engineer. But a pat on the back all round. Feeling for Lewis Hamilton.

0:55:150:55:21

Absolutely superb. He takes pole position here. After doing it at

0:55:210:55:25

Silverstone maybe he can do what Rosberg did to him and steal his

0:55:250:55:29

team-mate's home race, that will be his target. Let's look at the line

0:55:290:55:39
0:55:390:56:00

his target. Let's look at the line Perez didn't hake it into the top

0:56:000:56:10
0:56:100:56:25

congratulations. What a lap. You seem to have had a few problems this

0:56:250:56:28

weekend, but when it mattered you nailed it. Yeah, really so

0:56:280:56:32

surprised. It's been a disaster this weekend. P 1 the car felt great.

0:56:320:56:37

Then we made changes and it got worse and worse. P2 wasn't so good.

0:56:370:56:42

Made changes last night and the car felt even worse today. You know when

0:56:420:56:50

you get lost by #36r3 it's -- P3 it's almost impossible to recover

0:56:500:56:55

it. I really felt lost. I thought that we would struggle to get into

0:56:550:56:59

the top ten. We made the right changes and the car felt great on my

0:56:590:57:04

first lap. I was almost up there with Nico. I knew we had a chance to

0:57:040:57:07

compete at the front. It was a compete at the front. It was a

0:57:070:57:10

wonderful lap. Can you talk us round. It looks like it was first

0:57:100:57:16

sector where you really nailed it. Turn one, missed the apex a bit,

0:57:170:57:20

tried to avoid the different camber drop off. Got on the power quick

0:57:200:57:25

into turn two. Got on the power, touched the kerb a bit. Nice and

0:57:250:57:30

deep into turn three. Car started to turn, you get hard on the power, up

0:57:300:57:34

shift to third and get a good exit on the KERS all the way down to turn

0:57:340:57:40

five. You carry awes much speed as you can through -- as much speed as

0:57:400:57:46

you can through turn five. All the way down here you adjust the brake

0:57:460:57:51

bias to make sure you're reason for turn seven. Braking heavily trying

0:57:510:57:55

not to sacrifice too much on the entry but make sure you get the exit

0:57:550:57:59

because it's a long way up the hill. Making sure I'm shifting ought am

0:57:590:58:03

time here. This is such a cool part of the track. I can't see the track

0:58:030:58:08

in the car. Here I had a big oversteer moment on the exit here. I

0:58:080:58:12

had to lift. I lost a tenth there. Back on the power and managed to

0:58:120:58:17

recover a keep a part of. It down here with the DRS flat out, moving

0:58:170:58:22

the brake bias again into position trying to get back to the right

0:58:220:58:27

signed -- side, brake again. Then you nail it and hope you get a good

0:58:270:58:32

exit. I put as much speed as I could into the last corner. The car is a

0:58:320:58:37

bit nervous but use all the road on the exit and I am really happy. I

0:58:370:58:43

could see that I was 0. 14 up. Fortunately that was enough. You

0:58:430:58:47

knew you were on line for pole position. How much time when you had

0:58:470:58:54

the oversteer moment, how much time due leave on the table? I was. 22

0:58:540:59:00

Upstarts to that point. It went back down to a tenth. But I gained it

0:59:000:59:04

back. Pole position today, begs the question - tomorrow, race settings,

0:59:040:59:09

how are you you feeling? Again, because we changed the car I really

0:59:090:59:14

have no idea how the car will behave tomorrow. I hope that it debads like

0:59:140:59:19

it did today. The Red Bull has -- behaves like it did today. The Red

0:59:190:59:22

Bull has been good today. It will be difficult to beat them. We're in a

0:59:220:59:26

position to do that. Fingers crossed. I didn't get the home win

0:59:270:59:30

at Silverstone, which would have meant so much to me. This is the

0:59:300:59:33

home Grand Prix for the team so I hope that I can do it for them.

0:59:330:59:36

hope that I can do it for them. wish you all the best. Mixed

0:59:360:59:40

fortunes for the Mercedes boys. fortunes for the Mercedes boys.

0:59:400:59:45

Let's hear from Nico now. To go from second to 11th, must be

0:59:450:59:49

galling, what happened? I think the team underestimated how much the

0:59:490:59:53

other people were going quicker. That's it. A long day out there for

0:59:530:59:58

you tomorrow. What do you think is achievable? From 11th, it's really

0:59:581:00:03

going to be difficult. I will dot best I can and try to get up the

1:00:031:00:05

best I can and try to get up the best I can and try to get up the

1:00:051:00:14

grid. Cell and despondent Nico Rosberg quite understandably. How

1:00:141:00:21

did that happen? We made our best judgement at the time. We were

1:00:211:00:25

trying to conserve the tyre as per the final qualifying. Nicole

1:00:251:00:31

achieved the cut-off time. But the track picked up more towards the end

1:00:311:00:37

and we anticipated. It was incredibly close out there. How

1:00:371:00:42

confident where you that you had a shot for the pole position? The

1:00:421:00:49

first set Derek define the lap for Lewis Hamilton. Yet he seems to get

1:00:491:00:53

it quite determination one qualifying came. He had not been

1:00:531:00:57

happy with the balance of the car before then. But as soon as

1:00:571:01:00

qualifying started he seemed to be happy and just made some small

1:01:001:01:10

adjustments during qualifying. It will be interesting. When you talk

1:01:101:01:16

about small adjustments, the setup of the car is fixed. But what can

1:01:161:01:20

driver work with with his engineer? You can change the front wing, of

1:01:201:01:25

course. You can do some electronic changes. Though tiny changes but

1:01:251:01:32

they can be critical. In terms of the race pace tomorrow, what can

1:01:321:01:38

Nico Rosberg do? Well he has the free choice of the tyres. We will

1:01:381:01:44

look at a different strategy and see what we can do. We have struggled a

1:01:441:01:49

bit to understand the tyres that we have got. The balance yesterday was

1:01:491:01:53

not great. So I hope we have got a good balance and that will be the

1:01:531:01:57

challenge. Because Red Bull on Friday looked as if they were having

1:01:571:02:01

some tremendous race runs and we were struggling. Hopefully we will

1:02:011:02:07

were struggling. Hopefully we will find it tomorrow.

1:02:081:02:12

Tell us about your qualifying, Sebastian. Is the front row of the

1:02:121:02:18

great enough for you? To be honest not the spot I was hoping for. But I

1:02:181:02:23

could not get any closer. It was tough. Generally I was pretty happy

1:02:231:02:28

with the car. We had a good car this morning and I was feeling confident.

1:02:281:02:33

But that first sector did not come together. Despite the fact that the

1:02:331:02:40

car felt fine. Just the time did not come. I then tried to make it up and

1:02:401:02:45

we could not make up the loss. Lewis Hamilton was pretty quick this

1:02:451:02:51

afternoon so well done to him. We will see what happens tomorrow. At

1:02:511:02:58

least that keeps us sharp for tomorrow. So he seems like a man

1:02:581:03:02

with a plan. I think he wanted to be on pole position. But they were

1:03:021:03:09

lacking in the first sector which is quite a technical part of the lap. I

1:03:091:03:16

think Red Bull are the ones to watch. Well we can hear now from

1:03:161:03:23

Mark Webber who has got a great track record around here. How do you

1:03:231:03:27

feel about a third heading into tomorrow with Mac pretty happy.

1:03:281:03:32

was a tricky session. The track was the hottest it has been all weekend.

1:03:321:03:40

The team did a good job to pull back together. We got the most out of the

1:03:401:03:47

car, pretty much. We do have a strategy about how it is going to

1:03:471:03:52

work tomorrow and we will see if that is enough. We can push hard

1:03:521:03:56

from that position and get the most out of it. So what do you think that

1:03:561:04:02

that plan could possibly be? could be two stops, three stops. It

1:04:021:04:08

remains to be seen. They have gone for the options tire, contrary to

1:04:081:04:15

what we have seen from Ferrari. So the real question tonight is how far

1:04:151:04:21

can any of the top drivers and teams go on those options? From Friday

1:04:211:04:26

they are expecting it to fall to pieces after about five or six laps.

1:04:261:04:32

There was quite a game going on through qualifying. It was always

1:04:331:04:36

going to be interesting to see what the strategy would be with the

1:04:361:04:46

tyres. Nico Rosberg will almost certainly go off on the prime tyres.

1:04:461:04:51

The teams will be watching closely and try to update their strategy. It

1:04:511:04:59

has been a good day for Lotus, happy with that?

1:04:591:05:06

It was a good surprise. We have seen different performances, making the

1:05:061:05:13

tyres working or not. I think we improved through qualifying.

1:05:131:05:18

seems that you fastest of all in the middle sector but lost some time in

1:05:181:05:25

the first sector. Is there one area where you last time in particular?

1:05:251:05:31

think I had some oversteer and then I tried to recover some time in to.

1:05:311:05:36

But with the curb on the outside, then you lose something like three

1:05:361:05:43

tenths. So knowing you are down, how did you manage to keep it together

1:05:431:05:53

and claw-back time in the middle sector? It is hard. It was almost

1:05:531:05:59

three tenths. And I thought that was the end of my lap. Then I said no,

1:06:001:06:06

you have to finish and give something, get everything you have.

1:06:061:06:12

So I adjusted into the different corners. So you just experimented

1:06:121:06:16

and did an amazing sector. So the pay is looking good overall for

1:06:161:06:23

tomorrow? It is looking good. can think that by the favourite and

1:06:231:06:29

it can be a disaster. Sometimes it is the opposite. We do not fully

1:06:291:06:34

understand everything. Can I ask you about your season so far? This time

1:06:341:06:41

last year you had 61 points. You are sitting on 26. Do you think you can

1:06:411:06:46

start addressing that tomorrow? For sure I will try. In a few races we

1:06:461:06:52

should have got more points than we did. Sometimes it is bad luck. We

1:06:521:06:57

had a suspension in Barcelona when we were looking good. In Monaco we

1:06:571:07:04

were blocked in qualifying. And then in Silverstone the front wing just

1:07:041:07:09

broke through the race. We know it does happen. We lost a lot of

1:07:091:07:16

performance. So it was a difficult time. But as long as you believe you

1:07:161:07:22

can do it it is good to show that we are still here. Well we hope to push

1:07:221:07:26

a bit of good luck you away. Thank you very much.

1:07:261:07:31

Fernando Alonso looking at the long game for tomorrow, I imagine.

1:07:311:07:39

Starting on the medium tyres. think there is no clear strategy at

1:07:391:07:45

the moment. We did something different in bed to the normal Q3

1:07:451:07:55
1:07:551:07:55

start. We cannot be sure until tomorrow how the race develops. With

1:07:551:08:01

the positions of the grid in fifth and sixth with the soft tyre, six

1:08:011:08:07

and seven with the medium tyres, it is not that big a deal. And we have

1:08:071:08:12

a new window opening for strategy. We will see the result tomorrow. He

1:08:121:08:19

does not sound to convince about the strategy. There is no question he is

1:08:191:08:24

out of position from what they would normally expect. The first lap can

1:08:241:08:30

be quite messy. A lot of bunching of the cars. He is also behind his

1:08:301:08:33

team-mate. And if they applied the normal rules of qualifying position

1:08:331:08:39

gets the strategic choice, that gives the advantage to Felipe Massa.

1:08:391:08:44

But I think quite simply they do not know today because the tyres are

1:08:451:08:49

falling away based on Friday morning. It is expected to be even

1:08:501:08:54

hotter again tomorrow. Well we can find out more about their strategy

1:08:541:09:01

from the team bus. It looks like your car was quick enough for pole

1:09:011:09:04

position this afternoon but you went for a different strategy. We took

1:09:041:09:11

the approach of thinking forward to tomorrow. And of course tomorrow we

1:09:111:09:15

will see we were right. But I think we considered the elements that we

1:09:151:09:21

had and it was the right thing to do. Will you not tempted to split

1:09:211:09:28

the strategy? No, we believe by doing that we could could have

1:09:281:09:34

screwed up the other one. So I think we did the best we could today.

1:09:341:09:38

you explain your thinking? How do you think the decision will help you

1:09:381:09:46

tomorrow with Mac while the cost to pit at the end, there will be a lot

1:09:461:09:52

of traffic. Very simple. Making that sound quite simple but sometimes

1:09:521:09:58

they do go for a dual link strategy. What do you think about going for

1:09:581:10:02

exactly the same? I think they believe that that will be a better

1:10:021:10:07

strategy for them to get the maximum points. There is a big asset between

1:10:071:10:15

the prime tyres and the options. And there is the question of durability.

Durability is not the issue. They are worried about going off on the

1:10:201:10:25

same tyres and find themselves getting into a bunch of traffic.

1:10:251:10:31

Then they could find themselves in some whinny compromising positions.

1:10:311:10:36

There are a couple of doctors zones but the actual length are quite

1:10:361:10:43

short. Jenson Button, looking at the long

1:10:431:10:50

game for tomorrow? It is tricky for qualifying. It is a tricky balance

1:10:501:10:56

between the heart and the head. If we went on the option tyre, P six

1:10:561:11:00

would be where we had to get to make it worthwhile. I think we could have

1:11:001:11:09

done that but it is the role of the dice going into qualifying. So, not

1:11:091:11:16

too bad. Q2 was good, happy with that lap. I do not feel I did

1:11:161:11:25

anything wrong. It is just a pity it is to be nine. It has been a bit of

1:11:251:11:27

a lottery in this qualifying session. But he looks happier this

1:11:271:11:36

weekend. He was within half a second off the fast just time in the middle

1:11:361:11:42

part of qualifying. So that does show progress for McLaren. They are

1:11:421:11:46

having to play the long game and try to get the maximum result for the

1:11:461:11:53

team. So do you think that is the right thing to do? Absolutely.

1:11:531:11:57

Realistically they're not looking like a team that can win the Grand

1:11:571:12:02

Prix. So it is about damage limitation whilst they try to

1:12:021:12:06

develop the car. Well let's take a look at the great now. Lewis

1:12:061:12:16
1:12:161:12:26

Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel share Hulkenberg the second fastest

1:12:261:12:36
1:12:361:12:53

German. Perez and Gutierrez share an moment. If timely moment for him to

1:12:531:13:00

find his qualifying form. It is looking and shaping up to be a great

1:13:001:13:06

race tomorrow. I think so.Strategy always plays a part. They have
