The Austrian Grand Prix - Qualifying Highlights Formula 1

If anyone tells you that Formula 1 is boring, you may wish to remind

them of this nonstop drama a fortnight ago in Montreal.

He has the advantage of natural speed. Let them race, but be careful

with the brakes, let's see who does the better job. Lights out, away we

go, and it is a good start from Hamilton! Hamilton loses second

place! Did he touch his team-mate? This is his opportunity, and he

makes the most of it. Rosberg, huge moment. He was so close to putting

it into the wall. The pressure is relentless, he has got to keep

pushing. RADIO: I have lost power, guys. OK,

Nico, we are trying to solve it. COMMENTATOR: Incomes Ricciardo, and

he has gone out in front of his team-mate. It is a slowish start,

this could be a massive opportunity for Lewis Hamilton. And Massa goes

ahead! This has got to be a chance for Hamilton to take the lead! And

it looks as though the Canadian Grand Prix is all over for the

British driver! Massa is in the pit. Perez will take second place. He is

going to go down the inside. DAVID COULTHARD: It is not beyond

the realms of possibility that he could be challenging for the lead.

He has gone too wide, but he gets it back!

Ricciardo goes past Rosberg to take the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix

with just a couple of laps to go! And that is a chance for Vettel. And

Sebastian Vettel has snatched the position! Oh, my goodness! Daniel

Ricciardo takes his first ever Grand Prix win, he wins in Canada! Red

Bull are back! Despite those big accidents, happy

to say that no one was hurt in the making of the Canadian Grand Prix.

So, after 11 years, welcome back to Austria, to qualifying from the

beautiful mountains. And of course, David Coulthard raced here, and did

very well, more points and more podiums than anyone else, so why did

it suit you so much? I think the fact that it has got a lot of

elevation, 12% gradient coming up to turn two. We are above sea level, so

you have got less downforce available. It will not affect the

horsepower this year, because they have got the turbos, but it meant

the car, the challenge, the blind corners, one of that made it a

high-speed roller-coaster, and I quite like those! It is a fast lap

here, so will we see a really tight qualifying session, do you think?

Yes, the lap distance is the same as Canada, but because there are only

eight corners, the lap time is very short. So, expect to see several

cars within a 10th of a second. We saw Daniel Ricciardo winning in

Canada, that was a great weekend from him come so do you think he

will come here with momentum? Confidence, definitely. It is his

first win. He has got all the confidence. That will settle his

mind. It will all be down to the performance of the car, of course.

We know he has been doing a great job, relative to four times world

champion Sebastian Vettel, but it will all be about horsepower, which

will probably lend itself more to the Mercedes drivers. We have been

catching up with Daniel Ricciardo, as he was walking around the track.

Here he is. Formula 1's newest race winner. How are you?! Can you say

that again?! COMMENTATOR: Daniel Ricciardo takes

his first ever Grand Prix win! Tell us what was happening in the

cockpit. I do not know, I was a bit silent, actually. Don't get me

wrong, I was ecstatic, obviously, I know that the radio gets fed out, so

I was like, don't do anything which is going to be weird. Five times as

many people have been into space and have won Grand Prix. What?!

Really?! How has it changed your life, has it moved the goalposts for

you? It was probably the greatest day of my life, so now it is just

keep connecting the dots and building it towards a World

Championship one day. Was there a sense of relief for you in a way

that your mother was not in Montreal, because she had been to

all of your other podiums so far, and you were beginning to think it

was a jinx? I spoke to them at about 7.30 that evening after the race,

which was 7.30 in the morning for them, and I was still up drinking

champagne. -- they were still up. So I think they have a pretty good

party back in Australia. Any indications on how the team is

treating you, and Sebastian? They have been great from the first day.

Mosson was really good. He was gracious in defeat, if that is what

you call it, he gave me a lot of respect after the race. They could

see how much it meant to me. It was such an opportunistic win as well,

you just nailed it around the pit stops? That is what I was really

proud of. Yes, Mercedes were quickest, but they had some issues,

and who knows, it might be our only chance in a long time to get a win,

and it was good that we capitalised, made the move when we could and did

everything, we did not leave anything on the table. I hope you

maximise every have a good weekend. So, the 24-year-old Australian lies

in third, six D1 points behind Championship leader Nico Rosberg. --

61. Lewis Hamilton now trails Rosberg by 22 points. Mercedes still

command the Constructors' Championship with a large lead over

Red Bull. So, that is how your teams and

drivers stack up. Here is the latest Formula 1 news round-up, with Lee

McKenzie. It was announced this week that

Michael Schumacher is out of a coma, after his skiing accident in

December. He has been transferred to another hospital to continue his

rehabilitation. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's cars suffered the

same problem within 22 seconds of each other in Montreal. Hamilton's

could not continue, giving him a very costly not finish. They were

both at a critical stage in terms of heat, but Nico was getting clean air

into his brake ducts, and I was behind him, in dirty air. So

naturally, mine was a bit hotter. So much went wrong in that race, and to

bring it home second was really damage limitation day. It was good,

definitely. This huge accident at the end of the Grand Prix sent

Felipe Massa into the barriers, and Sergio Perez as well. He took a five

place penalty for causing the accident, that is adamant it was not

his fault. Massa disagrees. The rule says that when a car moves behind

you, you cannot move any more, so it is clear. But it happens with young

guys. This is a problem. I do not know what they learn in GP2. We are

risking our lives, it is not like I wanted to crash or something. I do

not see the point of those comments. We came in, we spoke about the

accident, I do not think there is much need to speak between us as we

will not agree on anything. Sergio seems adamant that it was not his

fault? So you see that he will never learn. What would we an appropriate

penalty? For me, minimum ten positions. And some points on the

driver license! Clearly, a big difference of opinion on that. Let's

have another look at the incident. When you first saw it it was

difficult to see whose fault it was. DAVID COULTHARD: If you follow the

green dotted line, Massa should have taken this as a hint. But you can

see Perez coming over to the left which is where the contact was made.

When the evidence was presented, it showed that he changed his position

slightly, and the rules are clear, you are not allowed to have a change

of position to defend your position in the braking zone. And the five

place grid penalty still stands, is that the right decision? With the

evidence, it is tight, but it is the right decision. Mark Webber is here

this weekend, chatting with some fans. Nice to see you. Good to be

here! Is this a world away from where you are right now in your

head? Pretty much, I have been parachuted in this weekend, but it

is good to be here. I am just so happy that Formula 1 is returning to

a traditional circuit, it is an original circuit, obviously it is

shorter than the previous version, but some of these new venues are

lacking a bit of character, and this is an all school circuit. Over this

weekend, 225,000 fans will be turning up, I think tickets were

sold out in 48 hours - how important is it that this stays on the

calendar? We are actually not far from Budapest, so a lot of people

from this region would go to the Budapest Grand Prix, but now that

this is back on the calendar, people will come here in Austria. It is a

tricky lap to put together. There is a bit of innovation and change, and

some bumps. The first sector, the exit is very important crummy as you

can see, they put this yellow kerb on to control them as they go

through the gradient. You are used to this recoverable energy in sports

cars, but what would you think if you were raising the Formula 1 cars,

what would be the big difference over what you have raised

previously? Yes, the amount of information the driver has got to

take on in the braking area, the electronic brake balance situation

as well, these are all facets which the driver has to balance on the way

into the corner. These double lefts are quite important for lap time as

well. You are using a bit of kerb on the Exeter. This long left-hander

goes on for ever. A little bit on the old neck muscles. And then both

of these corners are blind towards the end of the lap. You cannot see

the apex that well. It is a good little track, a lot of character. We

have seen a number of cars running wide here? Yes, the drivers would

probably like that except kerb to run a bit longer. But it is good,

they have got to concentrate. It sounds like it is going to be a

really good qualifying session. Just to get a word with you about Daniel

Ricciardo, he seems to have adapted so incredibly well to the new

technology and the new team? Star of the year so far for me, driver of

the year so far. He is certainly very, very confident, in any

conditions. The amount of errors he is making is minimal. he is

constantly putting in the lap times. He is brave as well. He has had a

crack at Monaco, and I am very happy to have the Australian national

anthem playing so quickly after I got a few lucky results! Thank you

very much. Let's get the latest from the pit lane, with Tom Clarkson. The

teams with the biggest headaches are McLaren and Force India. They have

replaced the rear right break caliper. Down at Force India, Sergio

Perez did a very spectacular wheelie after he ran wide of the X it at the

far corner. He came down very heavily on the front suspension.

Apart from that, everyone hours is looking good and all 22 cars should

be out at the start of the session. -- everyone else.

Qualifying begins in the heart of the Austrian countryside. Who will

conquer the demanding Red Bull Ring? Let's get an idea of what the

targets are in the first session. Down to our man in the pits, Tom

Clarkson. It will be very tight. In final practice, the top four cars

separated by .2 of a second. The time for us to look out for is

1:11.2. As we have been saying, that is a faster lap than many we go to.

They are getting around it in just over 70 seconds, maybe just under.

Two Austrian heroes of Grand Prix racing. Helmut Marko lost and I and

that prevented him carrying on and get hard burger. They will be out in

a Legends parade tonight. He hurt his arm in a skiing accident this

winter. He cannot lift his left arm. He said, three of the legends, one

has no eye, one cannot move his arm and the other is missing an year.

Three of the legends of the walking wounded right now. In that time,

they have been heroes here. How much Marko won the first ever race, a

saloon car race. -- Helmut. Let's focus now on the cars that are out

on the circuit. Immediately out on the track, Daniil Kvyat. He was

fourth fastest. We are going on board with him now. He is going for

another lap to prepare the rubber. They have been struggling to get the

temperature in the soft tyres. They are taking an extra lap to try to

generate the heat. I was in first gear when I was actually in neutral

so I went back to neutral and put it into first gear. ) the team has had

a tough morning so far. -- the team has had a tough morning. It did not

engage the gear so it has more than likely gone dock to dock. It will

give a half display on the dashboard. Clearly there are some

soft -- software issues. Just to confirm, it was Valterri Bottas

fastest this morning from Lewis Hamilton. Felipe Massa was third.

Daniil Kvyat was strong in the Tyrone Rosso. We will be keeping an

eye on Fernando Alonso. -- beat Tyrone Rosso. Most of these guys are

on the harder of the compound tyres. It does look like we will see the

Marussias and the catering is going out on the super-soft tyres. --

Caterhams. That was pretty good. They will get penalised if they are

too wide on Turn 8. An opening gambit therefore Daniil Kvyat. That

is the sort of closeness we are expecting to see between team-mates.

Daniel Gilliat gets the initial advantage. Q1 is all about getting

into the top 16. -- Daniel Kibby at. Holcombe Berg goes quickest. He is

marginally -- Nico Hulkenberg goes quickest. He is marginally faster

than Daniil Kvyat. The only exception to the super-soft users is

Emilio Gutierrez. I believe that was an image of the new partner of Kimi

Raikkonen. The Williams is going very slowly. Hopefully he is not in

trouble. I have just seen that Fernando Alonso has gone fastest. We

will see a rapid change. You need to keep your eyes peeled to see the

changes. What about the opening gambit by Hamilton? Not as quick as

that. It would be interesting to see where Valterri Bottas ends up. Let's

see what Nico Rosberg does as he puts in his first lap. Hamilton has

had the edge so far. He is three tenths slower than his team-mate.

Fernando Alonso is in third. You are outside the Ferrari garage. Mercedes

are one and two but they will be encouraged by the pace of Alonso.

They will be able to use the updates slated to Canada but could not use.

They have been able to run knows this weekend. Alonso was very

positive one I caught up with him this morning. That was Jenson Button

having a moment at the first corner. It looks like Jenson Button was

hoping to catch the caterer. He lost downforce and ran wide. Let's watch

Fernando Alonso as he comes through here. That was a big slide. He comes

out of the last corner. A big chunk of oversteer through the panel to a

corner. A slightly better lap. -- the penultimate corner. He had the

big slide at Turn 8. This will be a crucial corner. If you take all four

wheels over the line, immediately you have your turn disallowed. You

will get one or two warnings and then you will get a five second

penalty. Hamilton is still faster than Nico Rosberg. He is still just

a fraction behind. Sebastian Vettel has gone ninth fastest on the last

lap. Red Bull were struggling to get into the top ten this morning.

Sebastian Vettel achieved it. It will not be an easy day for Red Bull

despite this being at their home track, loaned by their boss, even if

the team is actually based in the UK. They have their other home track

coming up in a few weeks, at Silverstone. I think they will get

through to the next part of qualifying. I would be surprised to

see them run again. If they do it will be the fact that they want to

learn something from a new set of tyres. Fernando Alonso is fifth

fastest. He is on the harder of the compound tyres. This is Turn 8. A

big oversteer slide in the middle of the corner. He had to use the

run-off. That lap has to be disallowed. It has come up on our

screen. They'd turn in with such high speed. Minimum speed on the

apex is 130 miles an hour. Not a slow corner by any stretch of the

imagination. Normally you would expect the car to understeer

slightly through a corner like that. I suspect a lot of the drivers

have gone with more front wing angle which is putting a district portion

at amount of front load on the axle. For qualifying, they are trying to

get heat into the front tyres. Daniel Ricardo has done 1:10.3.

Felipe Massa is in third. Then we have 11 cars covered by a second

behind NAT. It'll be very tight. Williams next best the Mercedes.

Kimi Raikkonen is closer to Fernando Alonso. In terms of time he is three

tenths of a second. In the drop zone currently we have the Stauber of

Emilio Gutierrez, the Marussias. We have Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus

Ericsson. It looks unlikely we will need to go again but get the car

ready. It is an impressive time from Jules Bianchi. He is just over a

tenth behind Adrian Sutil. Exactly the same lap time as Esteban

Gutierrez. An improvement for Romain Grosjean. He has been struggling a

bit this weekend. The difficulty is getting the super-soft tired to

work. He was on the super-soft tired to do that. In some ways, he would

have to think he needs to do a little more. Hopefully that will be

enough to see him in the next part of qualifying. We reckon there is

anything from half a second plus on the super-soft higher. A sizeable

gain if you just apply the half second. That would put him in 13th

place. Jules Bianchi is the fastest of the young teams. The two patrons

are bringing up the rear. -- the two Caterhams are bringing up the rear.

Daniil Kvyat puts himself up into second. Certainly he has his eye

dialled in this afternoon. That was a very impressive lap by him. The

back end of the car has looked quite unstable. It has not been very happy

underbraking. Does he go wide? Not too wide. He gets away with that. A

nice turn on the inside. At the moment he is in 17th place. That is

a useful improvement. I think he will be relatively happy with the

time. It is difficult to see if they are running wide or not. There is a

huge advertising banner on the run-off area. Adrian Sutil is off

track. He has had time disallowed. It is just the pressure pads. A

light goes on and eight big arrow point at them to make it easier for

us to be able to tell what is going on. You can see that Jenson Button

was well within the restraints required. Let's see what they do

here. Jenson Button goes 12th. He is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. That was an

out lap. Let's see what the Dane can do. He raised here in the World

Series last year. Now he is getting to grips with a Formula One car. He

is up to fourth. That is very impressive from Kevin Magnussen. He

is keeping a watchful eye on that. This is where Adrian Sutil went

wide. He got greedy with the oversteer. The momentum just takes

you there. You know you are not supposed to. You have thrown it

through the apex and the track is dropping away. Not enough grip from

the tyres to be able to pull it back on the line -- online. You need to

get right up against the kerb at the apex of the corner to have a chance

of staying within the white lines. Jules Bianchi has a chance of

beating one macro Stauber, if not two. We are just watching Kimi

Raikkonen and he moves up to seventh. That puts him ahead of

Valterri Bottas at the moment. Felipe Massa about who got us have

not done a run on the super-soft. They may have done enough. Again a

slide from Adrian Sutil. He is up on what he needs to be in terms of

getting into the top 16. Currently he is in the drop zone with his

team-mate. Can they move up the order a bit? Pastor Maldonado is

putting on an impressive performance. Is this enough for

Adrian Sutil to move into the top 16? Not quite. He has missed out by

4000th of a second. A good lap by Adrian Sutil. He must have got

everything out of the Stauber. On our timing screens, we get

indications, and at no point was Sutil faster in any of the sectors,

so, just indications, and at no point was

Sutil faster in any of used up the life of the tyres. His team-mate,

very deliberate in not running wide through the apex of turn eight. And

it does look as though both Saubers are out of the qualifying battle.

And their difficult season continues. What about Bianchi? Can

he move ahead of at least one of the Saubers? That would be a big feather

in the of Marussia. No, he has missed out by just a few hundreds.

The caterer has been struggling here this weekend, and Max Chilton will

definitely start at the very back of the field. He will have been miffed

to have seen that Kobayashi was actually quicker than him in

qualifying. But to be fair to Chilton, he did not get a run on the

super softs in practice this morning.

DAVID COULTHARD: He has pulled the lap together. Well done to him. Yes,

I think that was a pretty impressive run. But really no surprises in that

what group. RADIO: Unfortunately, we are out by

nearly half a second. That is a big margin on a short

track like this. So, we confirm those which are now out...

So, no major shocks in Q1, I am now joined by ten time Grand Prix winner

Gerhardt Burger. Great experience here when it was the store) what

memories do you have? You're right, the circuit has had a lot of

different names! But yes, we Austrian drivers, we grew up on this

circuit, so for us it is very important to have a race back here.

Thanks to Red Bull, we have a great race back here. They have done a

great race on the facility. It is a great racing spirit here, and a lot

of fans. We can see from that session held tricky this track is,

there seems to be a few problems for some of the drivers, so who

impressed you during that session? Difficult to say. Yes, the circuit

is tricky, with the kerbs and the couple of difficult lines, but the

main issue here is the power, and the power is with the Mercedes. But

as we saw in the last race, you never know. Things can turn around.

Thank you very much here is Q2. The second part of qualifying gets

under way here in Austria. So, who is going to get into the top ten?

That is the next question. First car out on the circuit is Nico

Hulkenberg, in the Force India. Never raced here in the past, but

enjoying the look of the track when he took his walk around the circuit

here on Thursday morning. And there is a wonderful view over the trees

and the hillside. So, we have seen some impressive times from the CDs,

using the harder of the two compounds of tyres. One of the

Ferrari 's and the Williams or managed get through that first part

of qualifying, without resorting to the soft tyre. Tom, what are your

thoughts? For the top teams, the track temperature is now a good 5

degrees warmer than when they last around the super soft tyre this

morning. That is going to help give more grip. So, in terms of a cut-off

time, I think they will have to get well inside the one-minute nines.

Hulkenberg is on the super soft tyre, putting in a proper attempt

immediately at the start of this session. Coming in to the two

crucial right-handers to complete the lap.

DAVID COULTHARD: This is where he has got to be careful not to go over

the white line. It just looks like he might have taken all four wheels

over the line. Unfortunately they have got white paint beyond the

white line which meets its difficult for us to identify, so we will have

to wait and see what the stewards say. That is certainly the fastest

time we have seen from him so far today. Using the super-soft tyres

are reasonable effect. But wait until we see what some of the faster

teams can do. Hulkenberg the only one so far to have established a lap

time. Nothing yet from Mercedes. The other Force India has gone around in

an almost identical lap time, so nothing to choose between Hulkenberg

and Perez. Riding on board with Magnusson.

was going through that corner in fifth gear. Romain Grosjean and

Maldonado both in this second part of qualifying. Only the second time

this year that Maldonado has made it into Q2 just he has had so many

troubles with the car. That is a fair bit of the pace of the Force

Indias for Grosjean. But we did see some drivers putting in a quicker

lap on their second flying lap this morning in practice, so that could

happen again. Certainly that is the strategy of McLaren. As Raikkonen

goes very wide there. That will have cost him time. Kevin Magnussen was

fastest of all in the first sector, and that is his second lap on those

particular tyres. So, coming across the line, let's see what Kimi

Raikkonen has done. That puts him third. Again, behind the Force

Indias. I do not think Ferrari would expect to be behind them at this

stage. Down with Magnusson again, humming into this tricky turn eight.

Perfect. Touches the kerb on the inside, lovely line from Kevin

Magnussen. That puts him fastest for the moment. I think that was a

pretty good-looking lap. Still no reaction from Eric Boullier on the

pit wall. But for the moment, Magnusson is quickest. Still ten

minutes to go, though. And we are still waiting to see the fancied

cars, the Mercedes and the Williams. Riding with Alonso.

It is interesting that Magnusson has found more than half a second over

his Q1 time. That looked marginal to me. He is

off, here's on the grass! Alonso just gets it act on. That was where

Vettel did a complete double 360 yesterday. I think that that will be

taken off him. He was over the white line on the exit of turn nine. We

will have to see. But Massa goes fastest now. And

will have to see. But Massa goes fastest now. And we have got some

quick sector is getting set now. The FIA have been clear in stipulating

you cannot go beyond the white lines on the exit of turn eight but they

have not said anything about turn nine. Clearly you cannot gain

anything by being on the grass. So, Bottas rigour than his team-mate.

Yes, does he go over the white line on the first part? Yes, he does. So,

that counts. And you can gain an advantage there, whereas I suppose

on the exit of turn nine, you can't. It would have cost him, running on

the grass. The mechanic does not really appreciate that, looks as if

he has been sucking on a lemon! Watch out full was Hamilton, who is

currently lighting up the timing screens! That was the replay of

Alonso. He is on a great lap. Oh, he has backed off, has he? No, he

hasn't, he has gone fastest. But that last sector was not as quick as

his other sectors. Yes, visibly, it did not look as if he was committed

coming across the line. Whether he has had an issue. But not the

fastest man in that last sector. Was Berg has just beaten that in the

middle sector. So, a little bit down, just by about half a 10th. I

would expect, if Rosberg can nail this last couple of corners... Oh,

yes, he has gone fastest. So I think Hamilton has not been able to show

is exactly what he can do. Ricciardo is coming into the last corner... He

goes into ninth place. Let's get some news from Tom in the pit lane.

I am trying to cast my beady eye macro into the Ferrari pit to see

what they are doing to Fernando Alonso's car. The same thing

happened to a car on Friday, going wide at that corner, and the team

sought fit to replace part of the floor. But I do not think Ferrari

will have the time to do that now. Alonso is not as fast as the

Mercedes, but he might just go up a little bit from seventh place. He

gains a couple of tenths, moving up one place. As Hulkenberg comes

across the line, in seventh. Nothing to choose between them. This is

where we get to the heart of the business in qualifying, in Q2, it is

extremely tough to get into the top ten. At the moment both Red Bulls

are outside it. For those who like comparing

different eras, the fastest ever lap time at this track was set by

Michael Schumacher in 2003. We are only one second away from that, and

still some room for improvement as the track rubbers in. I think that

puts spotlight on how good the development of this hybrid

technology has been, because the cars have got much less downforce

available, in comparison to a decade ago for absolutely. And we are

already underneath the 2003 pole position time. Let's just watch

Sergio Perez. He had that little moment this morning out of that

corner. He did it twice, once when the car almost took off. He is in

10th spot, but that was no improvement in lap time. There is Dr

Helmut Marko, the man who masterminds the Red Bull driver

programme, and who has been so delighted to see that first victory

for Daniel Ricciardo. But can he see both cars in the top ten? There is a

real danger of losing one or both of the Red Bulls from the top ten,

which would be a huge shock. This next lap could be crucial. This is

it. Chequered flag will be out at the end of this lap. He has not

improved on his own personal best there. Vettel has not, either. This

is going to be difficult for him to find something in that middle

sector. And of course, if you do put a wheel over that white line, you

could lose your lap time. Raikkonen has squeezed in, and Ricciardo has

pushed in just ahead of him! But will Vettel be able to squeeze in,

ahead of his team-mate? He has been beaten in qualifying five times out

of the seven qualifying sessions so far this year. It has been a tough

competition with his team-mate. Has he got enough in hand? Well, that is

a personal best middle sector. A lot of commitment as he throws it into

the last corner... It is not enough! He is outqualify again by his

team-mate, Daniel Ricciardo! And Jenson Button has failed as well! He

has just pushed Vettel down, but he is not in the top ten, whereas

Magnusson is comfortable you there. So, Jenson Button outqualified by

Kevin Magnussen, I quite a few places.

the Force India, they managed to get the super-soft tyres to work. Kimi

Raikkonen has scraped into the top ten. Sebastian Vettel with the Red

Bull Racing team has failed to get through into the top ten on this

return to the track. A real disappointment. Coming in to Turn 5,

Pastor Maldonado comes in with the oversteer and takes a trip to the

beach. It is unusual to see graph or on the modern circuits. The penalty

you pay, it ups the stakes in the braking zone. Jenson Button is out.

Sebastian Vettel has also fallen. And the second Lotus of Romain

Grosjean. Sebastian Vettel is out. What is going on with Sebastian

Vettel? Yellow macadamia struggling to get the tyres on for one lap in

qualifying. -- they were struggling. They are struggling to get the

tyres. White Tiger he has been out-qualified by his team-mate six

times and he will not be happy. -- he has been out-qualified. You need

to be in the window with yourself and start the laps with confidence.

It is all measured in fine margins. He will be frustrated but the whole

team will be with the performance today. No Jenson Button and no

Sebastian Vettel through to Q3. Was there any one particular problem

this afternoon? Know, apart from the fact we were not quick enough.

Daniel was slightly quicker in Turn 5, quicker in turn to all weekend.

At his about it. Jenson Button, how hampered when you by events this

morning? You never know. I had to take a shot in the dark for today. I

do not know. It was looking OK. I was getting to grips with it

reasonably well in Q2. On my last run, I had a Lotus in front and he

kept running wide. It hurts a lot. He pulled over in the end and the

last sector was green for me. I do not know where we would have ended

up. We are now joined by the racing director at McLaren. It has been a

mixed session for you. Kevin Magnussen has done a great job

getting into the top ten. A bit of mixed feelings. Jenson Button missed

out on laps this morning. How crucial has that been this

afternoon? It is difficult to say how much. When you see the lap times

today, it is three tenths. You may expect the lack of driving may have

cost him a few tenths which was enough to break into the top ten.

Kevin is in the top ten shoot out. What do you think he is capable of

achieving? Where do you see him in the mix at the end of it? I do not

want to promise anything. I think we need to be realistic, top eight.

Thank you very much for joining us. The final part of qualifying in

Austria. Kimi Raikkonen is in the top ten but several drivers have

missed out. Sergio Perez does have a five place grid penalty so Jenson

Button will move up to 11th place, courtesy of that. It will move

Sebastian Vettel up a place as well. The other Force India is in the top

ten. We have both the Williams in the top ten and both Mercedes in the

top ten. It looks like it will be a jewel for pole position between

Lewis Hamilton and Nicola Rosberg. -- Nico Rosberg.

The drivers will be helped by the track temperature. A bit of cloud

cover. In the pit lane, a bit of shadow. Our slap on the track, it

will be sunshine. About three Bottas coming into the

last couple of corners. -- Valterri Bottas will stop lets just wait and

see. It is 1.8.8. That is a great birth lap by the flying Finn. 1.8.8

quicker than anybody we have seen so far. That is macro a great first

lap. What about Fernando Alonso? We are

not expecting him to be challenging for the first couple of rows. How

high can he get the Ferrari? He keeps it together unlike his

previous attempt at Q2. They had the last three pole positions. Four

tenths of a second of Valterri Bottas. Michael Schumacher had the

last pole position here for Ferrari in 2003 but it had been a hat-trick

of pole positions for himself and Rubens Borough cello in those years.

-- Barichello. A long time since Felipe Massa has had a pole

position. His team-mate has the slight edge by some three tenths of

a second. Here we go. Lewis Hamilton, we certainly are expecting

it to be between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. I think Hamilton got the

choice of who gets which run in the final part of qualifying. They

automated as to which driver gets the choice whether to go first or

second. It has been Nico Rosberg 's choice this time. Nico Rosberg not

quite as quick in the first sector as Hamilton. That is the end of that

lap, surely. He will have to give that lap time up. That is the key

issue around this track. You have to stay in the margins. He was only

forth and that time will be disallowed, I am sure. It is noted

he has gone wide already. Nico Rosberg, the same place. That was

very close as well. Did he get away with that one? A quick lap. It is

not quick enough to be Valterri Bottas. Just outside the lap time

set by the Williams driver. No sign coming up yet as to whether... We

are looking at the replay of Hamilton. He definitely went wide.

You can see a massive kick of oversteer. It was the change of

track surface. He has now been pushed down. He has not set a time

as yet. Valterri Bottas is on top. We would expect Hamilton to come and

rather than going for another lap on those tyres. That means the pressure

is on. He only has one run to try and get the pole position. The

pressure is slightly off Valterri Bottas and Nico Rosberg. Williams at

the moment are beating Mercedes, as we saw in Canada when Felipe Massa

became the first non-Mercedes driver to lead a Grand Prix. Now they find

themselves under some real pressure from the Williams team. There is

Valterri Bottas. Only his 27th Grand Prix. He is showing he has got great

form, great ability and trying to deliver on that today. It will come

down to the final run in the session. We are watching Kimi

Raikkonen. He has not set a lap time as yet. He has the one new set of

tyres and we are seeing him out of sequence. He is being chased by

Daniel Ricardo. He is on and out laps and he will not necessarily

want to be too close to the Ferrari. He is some eight tenths of a second

down. The second sector and he is slow there as well. It does not look

like this will be a quick lap. He is preparing his tyres or they are not

at all happy with the balance. Does he have a bit more to deliver? Can

he be the time set by Valterri Bottas? What about Lewis Hamilton?

He has to get a lap in. At the moment he is ninth. This is not what

Hamilton needs. If anyone can respond to the pressure, it is this

man, Lewis Hamilton. He is always one to watch in qualifying. He will

have the confidence to deliver. He will be thinking, I need to make

enough of a gap to the car in front will stop he knows what the balance

was on the previous set of new tyres. There is no such thing as

exactly the same when it comes to handmade tyres. There will be

something different in the way he prepares the lap or the response. He

will get the feedback. He will need to make a mental adjustment to the

way he prepares for the braking zone. There is a lot going on in his

mind. Can Valterri Bottas improve on what he has done already? He is

fastest in their session so far. With 1.5 minutes to go, Kimi

Raikkonen is still on his lap, trying to improve on the situation.

This is pretty close. He is half a tenth slower than Lewis Hamilton. He

gets away with it. He will get a good drive of that term. Kimi

personal best. He just keeps it in line. He is four tenths down on this

lap in these tyres so there is no point really finishing the lap. That

has not shown the loss of time. He goes to wide. At the end, his lap is

lower than the pole position lap. Problems for one of the Mercedes. It

is Hamilton, is it? He will run out of time. He is currently going to

start this race... Did he have a massive lock-up into turn to? He

will be in tenth place. This is crucial for his world champion

hopes. Let's keep an eye on Felipe Massa. He is currently third. He has

gone fastest. He has dragged the last sector together and he has gone

fastest of all. Has he taken pole position? What about Nico Rosberg?

He is down to third position. He is off the front row entirely. Daniil

Kvyat comes through in seventh. Williams are in pole position but

they have the entire front row. This is unbelievable. Nick Rosberg brings

it back into the pits. He takes his first pole position since the

Spanish Grand Prix where he inherited a pole position after

Hamilton got excluded. What a result for Williams! Felipe Massa ahead of

Valterri Bottas with their first pole position since 2008 and the

first time he has been in pole position since his accident in 2009.

What happened to Hamilton? There was an issue with the rear axle locking

up. You can see... Smoke is coming out of the rear. It did not look

like the left rear had started to under rotate. Was it another issue?

Something went wrong, surely, the way the car reacted. You have got to

feel for Valtteri Bottas. But what a fantastic performance that was from

Felipe Massa. A fantastic overall performance from the Williams team.

RADIO: Great lap, great lap! Great job, guys, great job!

What is it about this Austrian track?! Fastest in the last race at

the strike ring in 1987, Jack Villeneuve took whole position for

Williams in 1997, and now Williams have done it again, in its new guise

as the Red Bull Ring, there is something about Williams and Austria

which just goes together. It is the Brazilian who has taken pole

position, and listen to that response. It is Williams that has

dominated here at the Red Bull Ring. A real surprise. Massa taking his

first pole position in six years. Bottas will line up alongside him,

Fon Williams. Seventh for Kvyat, his best ever

qualifying performance. And we have got some penalties to be applied.

Perez has a five place penalty. Max Chilton also with a penalty.

Rosberg just trying to work out what happened, I think. Indeed! I did not

think anyone was going to challenge them. Susie Wolfe, she will be in

the Williams, in the first practice session at Silverstone, of course.

The Williams team really starting to come together, a team which has been

through some buried good times. But at that, a fantastic performance

from Felipe Massa. He has taken pole position for the Austrian Grand

Prix. Felipe, huge congratulations, it has

been a long time since your last pole position in 2008 - what were

you thinking when you went across the line? Well, I was sure that the

lap was good, but I was not sure it was pole position. You always have

these Mercedes in our mind, that maybe they will be in front, maybe a

lot in front. So when I crossed the line, my engineer was screaming,

saying, great lap, great lap! But then I was still waiting. I was

asking, where are the Mercedes?! And then there was no Mercedes, so I was

first. I was really emotional. I was missing it a lot, this position.

Something that I have been many times in my career, even in Formula

1 many times, so I was missing it, it was a long time. But it is great,

it is fantastic. There were some difficult moments in the lap, but

have a look at that, with David. It seems that you had a bit of a

lock-up at turn one? It is true, I lost a little bit of time there. I

even saw my lap time, I was half a 10th slower than my best. So then I

came into turn two, which was a good corner for me, actually. And then

from there to the end of the lap, I made just a perfect lap crumbled

that is interesting, because there was another lock-up at turn three,

but you were able to use that to your advantage. Yes, but I did not

lose anything. It looks like I did, but I didn't, because I was able to

go earlier on the throttle. This is a key part of the lap, we saw your

team-mate going ride here, Kimi Raikkonen. So, at this point you

knew you were on for something special? Yes, even at the end of the

lap, it was great, I did this corner here, and then, just going into the

last corner, I even went a little bit wide, I said, don't touch the

outside of the kerb! And then we finished, and it was great. We know

that your son gave you a good luck charm to put in your car to date. I

think you had better use it tomorrow for the race as well! Yes, it is

something that he was playing with in the motorhome beforehand, and he

said, take it with you. It is a little name are. It is always as it

is to have the family behind you! -- a little Neymar. Let's hear from his

team-mates now. Congratulations on that. You had to back out, you made

a slight mistake on that last one, how close were you to pole

position? Obviously, the first run was much better for me and even

before I went wide, I was quite a bit down on the lap time anyway. So,

it is a little bit unfortunate. I would have preferred to be P1, but

as a team, it is the maximum result we could have got today, so that is

very good. Tough day to day, tellers what happened at the end? Just Q3

was not a good one, I think I just locked up the rear and it spun me

around, those things happen. There was nothing which broke on the car?

I have no idea, I drove it back so I assume not. I know you like to

overtake, and you will have to do a bit of that tomorrow, but is it

possible around here? I think it will be hard around here. The last

sector is all downforce, so tomorrow is just down which damage

limitation. I have got to try and fix what I did today. Allen, Lewis

was talking about that spin and the fact that he did not think there was

a problem with the car, do you agree with that? Yes, Niki Lauda conquered

that there was no technical problem with the car. Lewis Hamilton is very

aggressive, immediately, the rear brakes locked up and immediately, he

was going backwards and off the circuit. You can see on this one, as

soon as he touches the brakes, he is putting on opposite lock, and from

this point, there was nothing he could do about it. But he did drive

back to the pits, and I think it was an opportunity missed. He did seem

to put himself under an enormous amount of pressure, though, having

to do that flying lap? In reality, he lost it on the first run. In the

first run, he was in a position, as we can see, against Felipe Massa's

pole position on the left-hand side, he is already ahead. He was three

tenths up at this point. And as we sit here, if we freeze it now, look

how far ahead Lewis Hamilton is, as he throws it into the corner at turn

eight, and then runs wide, which penalise is his lap and disallows

it. That puts the pressure on him for his next and only run in

qualifying. David, what about Nico Rosberg, who starts off the second

row, did he ever looked like he could get pole position? I do not

think so, he has been on the back foot relative to Lewis Hamilton,

which is why it is even more surprising that Lewis felt he had to

do so much in that first run. So it seems that it was a big missed

opportunity for Lewis Hamilton today. We can hear from Nico Rosberg

now. Nico, you had to back out on that

last lap, was pole position looking likely, do you think? Definitely,

the chance was there, but I had to back out of it, because I have two

left at least two tenths, and then to be safe, I need to lose three

tenths, and I cannot make up that much, so I backed out of. And the

first one that I had was really not good because I messed up my setup,

because I had too much understeer, so I tried something with the

switch, and these switches we have on the steering wheel, they can

really transform the car, and I put too much and break into the car, so

I was going into much sideways into the corners, and it did not work out

at all. But there we are, I have a good setup for the race, so the pace

should be good tomorrow. Not going to be easy to get by them, but I

going to try. Fernando, you must be pleased with fourth string is yes,

it was a nice surprise. Qualifying was not as clean as other times. In

my last lap in Q3 I was improving, and then I went long in corner five,

semi-feelings. But to get fourth, the best result of the year, that

compensates for everything. Yes, it is not typical qualifying, with

Williams in front, and we have Hamilton behind us, so I guess for

the race it is going to be tough. Forth today, David, best qualifying

for Ferrari this year, and it is a bit sad to hear Fernando Alonso

saying he is fighting for fourth place tomorrow? I think it is

realistic. saying he is fighting for fourth

place tomorrow? I think Williams have taken some time to develop

their package. What is disappointing is that Ferrari, with all of their

resources, they find themselves in a rebuilding phase of this year, not

looking like they will be challenging for a podium, unless

there is an accident ahead. But they are still continuing to restructure,

which takes time, so do you think they are heading in the right

direction? They have been stored in that position for some time now.

They had a couple of years where they were quite competitive, but at

the moment, it looks like they are going around in circles. Let's check

out the great, with Ben Edwards. -- the green.

Neither Hamilton nor Hulkenberg set a time, so they will start ninth and

10th. Maldonado drove a good lap to outqualify his team-mate, Grosjean,

for the first time. The five place penalty puts Perez in 16th.

So, that is how your grid lines up for tomorrow. We are joined now by

the deputy team principal at Williams, Claire Williams. What do

you think about tomorrow? That it is what it is all about, and Franck has

been saying, why are you celebrating, we have not won

anything?! And it is about tomorrow. We have got to get some big points

to put on the table tomorrow. We have not done as well as we could

have done in the past few races, to capitalise on the car that we have,

so I hope tomorrow that the guys can keep it on the black stuff and get

some good points for us. What do you think has turned the car around in

pace on this circuit and why would it not translate into race pace for

tomorrow? I hope it does translate into race pace. The guys back at

home have done a great job to deliver long run pace, so I hope we

can capitalise on that tomorrow. It is all about the race. I just hope

that into the first corner, we have a clean exits, and the guys can just

go away. But it is a long race, the Mercedes are so competitive, and the

Red Bulls are going to want to prove something at their home Grand Prix.

Very quickly, if Valtteri Bottas gets on the podium, I think there is

a bet? I had a bet with him that if he gets onto the podium, he has to

wear his lederhosen! We will have all the highlights for you tomorrow
