Hello, welcome to Silverstone, it is great to be here at the British

:01:03.:01:10.

Grand Prix. We cannot promise sunshine throughout the weekend, but

:01:11.:01:15.

we have every session live. The first free practice is about to get

:01:16.:01:20.

underway. This is a fantastic venue, the home of British

:01:21.:01:23.

motorsport. I started my career here. This weekend is the 50th

:01:24.:01:29.

anniversary of the running of this race.

:01:30.:01:30.

here. This weekend is the 50th anniversary of We have three British

:01:31.:01:35.

drivers on the grid, only one has a chance of winning, Lewis Hamilton.

:01:36.:01:39.

Jenson Button will be giving everything, as will Max Chilton, but

:01:40.:01:45.

Lewis Hamilton has got the car, and he seems to have the confidence to

:01:46.:01:50.

take the fight to Nico Rosberg. He is overdue a victory after last

:01:51.:01:55.

year. The corral spoke one, and he leads the drivers championship at

:01:56.:01:56.

the moment. Look at Jenson Button, languishing

:01:57.:02:15.

in eighth place. Mercedes have a huge lead. It is great to see Force

:02:16.:02:24.

India in fourth place. Marussia's two points from Jules Bianchi in

:02:25.:02:30.

Monaco. We also have the added excitement of another British driver

:02:31.:02:36.

in the first free practice the first female for over 20 years to be in a

:02:37.:02:42.

Formula One car. Fantastic, she has a very specific testing programme to

:02:43.:02:46.

do. It will not be very easy to look at her lap times in reference to her

:02:47.:02:53.

performance, but it is excellent, she has tested in Barcelona, she is

:02:54.:02:57.

running here and at the German Grand Prix, so we are hoping she has a

:02:58.:03:03.

good day. It is a big weekend, the grandstands are packed, which is

:03:04.:03:07.

great, but pressure on her shoulders. No question about it. But

:03:08.:03:14.

this is the first time, and when she releases the crutch -- clutch, the

:03:15.:03:21.

heart will be beating faster, but at the end of the first lap, it will be

:03:22.:03:25.

business as normal. In the commentary box, then Edwards and

:03:26.:03:33.

Tony. The drivers have got their programmes to go through. Yes, first

:03:34.:03:38.

practice is important for the drivers to get as much data as

:03:39.:03:47.

possible. Caterham will have a development driver, as well Sauber

:03:48.:03:55.

and Force India. You can also get involved through social media. You

:03:56.:04:00.

can tweak us. You can leave a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook

:04:01.:04:07.

page. We conceded campsites, it is always amazing to see how many fans

:04:08.:04:12.

cram in on a Friday. That does not happen at every race weekend! You

:04:13.:04:19.

feel it as a driver, the grandstands are raised up, you get a Mexican

:04:20.:04:23.

wave effect as you go around the circuit, it is a special sensation.

:04:24.:04:28.

The sun is shining, free practice about to start. We will be speaking

:04:29.:04:32.

to you from the pit lane, but let's leave you with them and Tony in the

:04:33.:04:38.

commentary box. About 30 seconds before the green

:04:39.:04:42.

light comes on to start this first practice session of the British

:04:43.:04:46.

Grand Prix weekend. It is great to have you with us. It is lovely to

:04:47.:04:51.

see a fantastic gathering of crowds already, the grandstand opposite

:04:52.:04:56.

looks full, people around every vantage point, a brilliant circuit.

:04:57.:05:02.

It is fantastic, it is one of the great historic venues, one of two

:05:03.:05:07.

ever present ones on the schedule. The other is the Italian Grand Prix.

:05:08.:05:13.

It has a special atmosphere. We are underway. 90 minutes, this session.

:05:14.:05:21.

The times do not apply to anything in terms of position or points or

:05:22.:05:25.

anything to do with the end of the race weekend. It is all about the

:05:26.:05:29.

initial planning, trying to get the cars and the drivers union, getting

:05:30.:05:35.

a feel for what they are going into four qualifying tomorrow afternoon,

:05:36.:05:40.

and the race on Sunday. Kevin Magnussen out in the McLaren. Jenson

:05:41.:05:49.

Button, a glimpse of pink, you will see, because he is wearing a pink

:05:50.:05:54.

helmet this weekend. It is in memory of his father, John, who died last

:05:55.:06:01.

winter. He is putting a lot into the event this weekend, inviting people

:06:02.:06:06.

to wear pink T-shirts in memory of his father, who was famous for

:06:07.:06:11.

wearing pink shirts. Pink shirts and a glass of red wine, he was a

:06:12.:06:14.

fantastic character, I remember him from many years ago, with his

:06:15.:06:20.

rallycross exploits, he loved it. He was a chew -- true enthusiasts, he

:06:21.:06:27.

took Jenson Button karting in his early days, he was an ace engine

:06:28.:06:34.

preparation man, he prepared the engines for Lewis Hamilton as well.

:06:35.:06:39.

You needed him if you are going to win kart races at one stage. Jenson

:06:40.:06:45.

Button's connection with his father was so strong, he said the world

:06:46.:06:51.

champ Richard Trophy should have had his father's name on it. They did

:06:52.:06:57.

everything together, John Wood come to all the races. He was not

:06:58.:07:02.

intrusive, he would not get in the way and try to make decisions. He

:07:03.:07:07.

knew what to do, he stood back and he let his son get on with it. Kevin

:07:08.:07:12.

Magnussen having a wobble, but nothing to worry him. It was quite a

:07:13.:07:16.

big snap! That what came up! Jenson Button is now on circuit, and

:07:17.:07:30.

he will be getting a huge amount of support as he takes to the track. It

:07:31.:07:35.

has not necessarily been coming from within the team. Within the last

:07:36.:07:42.

week or so, Ron Dennis giving him a GR, saying that he could give harder

:07:43.:07:50.

-- he could try harder. Jenson Button did not appreciate that. He

:07:51.:07:54.

said he always gives 100%, he said the whole team needs to be better.

:07:55.:07:59.

He said, I am doing my best, give me a better car. This is the lady we

:08:00.:08:11.

are keeping an eye on. Sebastian Vettel's car, the luminous green

:08:12.:08:19.

paint that the teams often apply in this session to get an idea of

:08:20.:08:23.

airflow over some revised aerodynamic parts. It is a

:08:24.:08:29.

high-speed track, it is a different circuit from the last few, Austria

:08:30.:08:36.

was point and squirt, Montr?al was slow corners, and now we have some

:08:37.:08:42.

of the fastest corners. Lots of high-speed changes of direction,

:08:43.:08:47.

very quick corners, and it is a different setup required. RADIO:

:08:48.:08:58.

Stay out. It is OK. A bit of communication with Kimi Raikkonen.

:08:59.:09:04.

Talking about Red Bull, they have got some paint on the car, because

:09:05.:09:09.

in Austria, one or two things were not working as they hoped. They want

:09:10.:09:14.

to check that out and make sure they have got it right.

:09:15.:09:18.

to check that out and make sure they have got it It is a different track,

:09:19.:09:21.

they will be trying different bits and pieces. The development driver

:09:22.:09:26.

therefore Red Bull, but he is not in the car today. We have the usual Red

:09:27.:09:33.

Bull drivers. Susie Wolff takes to the track. A bit of history, the

:09:34.:09:38.

first time in 22 years that a female racer has taken to the track at a

:09:39.:09:44.

Grand Prix event. She has driven the car in Barcelona, but it is a

:09:45.:09:47.

different story when the crowds are out and it is an official event. She

:09:48.:09:52.

will only do this session, but that is in common with what teams do with

:09:53.:09:56.

their third drivers. Several teams doing that, including Sauber,

:09:57.:10:05.

Caterham and Force India. I came down to the test she did a year

:10:06.:10:09.

ago, she did a really impressive job. She lapped within three tenths

:10:10.:10:18.

of the driver in the Force India. They were very impressed with the

:10:19.:10:23.

job she did, which is why she has gone through the programme, out of

:10:24.:10:28.

the simulator, and is in the car. It is great to see. Let's remind you

:10:29.:10:36.

who she is. She is 31, she comes from Scotland originally, now splits

:10:37.:10:39.

her time between Switzerland and Oxfordshire. She raced in carts as a

:10:40.:10:47.

youngster, she really got the flavour of it. Three times she was

:10:48.:10:51.

the female Carter of the year, the top female in the world in 2000, and

:10:52.:10:59.

raced against Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton spoke about that in the

:11:00.:11:05.

press conference. The event was won by another British driver, Colin

:11:06.:11:09.

Brown. She went into the single-seat cars, and Alan is where she will be

:11:10.:11:17.

coming into the pit. Yes, as you can imagine, there is a heck of a lot of

:11:18.:11:24.

cameras around. That is her first lap on the circuit. She is doing a

:11:25.:11:29.

development programme, so it will be difficult to look at her times and

:11:30.:11:33.

assess in terms of how she has got on. But if she gets within a second

:11:34.:11:39.

or Felipe Massa, she will have done a very good job, numbing a bit of

:11:40.:11:46.

the detail of what she is doing. This is standard, to see the car

:11:47.:11:49.

come straight back in, it is the installation lap. Kevin Magnussen

:11:50.:11:54.

has done his, and he has gone straight back out. McLaren getting

:11:55.:11:59.

on with it. We have seen Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa out as

:12:00.:12:04.

well. There is Lewis Hamilton, going out now. The man who carries the

:12:05.:12:10.

hopes of the nation this weekend. It has been a funny season, the

:12:11.:12:14.

forfeiture is that he had, it looked as though he was going to maintain

:12:15.:12:19.

the momentum, then we got to Monaco, qualifying did not go well, Nico

:12:20.:12:26.

Rosberg went off and then I'd him the chance, and ever since he has

:12:27.:12:32.

not looked as comfortable and imposing as he had been in the early

:12:33.:12:35.

part of the season. It is a close rivalry. People talk about the great

:12:36.:12:43.

rivalries of the past. This one is way closer than that, there are

:12:44.:12:49.

fractions between them. He did have the momentum, but he did not carry

:12:50.:12:55.

it on. He thought he was stitched up in Monaco, and he had another

:12:56.:13:00.

problem in Canada, whereas Nico Rosberg has finished all the races.

:13:01.:13:05.

But in his head, there is not a race where he has not been quicker. It is

:13:06.:13:12.

not a problem now, he does not have to win this race, he got double

:13:13.:13:16.

points in the last race, so within he is -- so as long as he is within

:13:17.:13:22.

14 points by the time we get to Abu Dhabi, he is fine, but questions are

:13:23.:13:27.

building up in his head. It is important for him that he gets a

:13:28.:13:31.

decent result this weekend. He has had one victory here, 2008, one of

:13:32.:13:38.

his best drives. We had wet conditions, and he won by a huge

:13:39.:13:43.

margin. It was fabulous, a fantastic day, we had that and the epic

:13:44.:13:48.

Wimbledon final on the same day. Both events of the same mould,

:13:49.:14:01.

fantastic. B: -- RADIO: Is it left or right hand down? The steering

:14:02.:14:06.

wheel is not quite straight. You can bet the suspension is straight, but

:14:07.:14:11.

the steering is slightly off centre. Lee, what kind of mood did you find

:14:12.:14:17.

when speaking to Lewis Hamilton yesterday? He was in a fantastic

:14:18.:14:24.

mood. You could not tell he was under pressure, it was the best I

:14:25.:14:28.

had seen him for a very long time. Yesterday, he just wanted to chat

:14:29.:14:33.

before and after the interview, he had a bit of hay fever, which

:14:34.:14:38.

affects people here, and there are very few things you are allowed to

:14:39.:14:43.

take, because of drugs testing. But he was not feeling the pressure. The

:14:44.:14:49.

other night, he decided to drive around Stevenage, where he grew up,

:14:50.:14:54.

he drove past houses that he used to go to school with, and he said how

:14:55.:14:58.

important it was to remember where he came from and his roots. That

:14:59.:15:04.

seems to be where he is at, not just about enjoying his life and the pop

:15:05.:15:09.

star girlfriend and the riches of being a Formula One driver, but

:15:10.:15:14.

remembering where he came from. When I asked how he thinks he can handle

:15:15.:15:19.

the pressure, he said, time will tell. That is one thing you can only

:15:20.:15:25.

find out as and when it is happening. At the moment, Nico

:15:26.:15:29.

Rosberg has momentum, Lewis Hamilton agreed, he says, this is the weekend

:15:30.:15:38.

to bring it back. Tom Clarkson also caught up with him briefly after the

:15:39.:15:41.

press conference. And put it to him about how special it is to race here

:15:42.:15:45.

at sill remember stone. -- Silverstone.

:15:46.:15:49.

What would victory this weekend mean to you? That's the question I am

:15:50.:15:54.

asked all the time, so, should have a good answer for you but I don't

:15:55.:16:00.

really. It's going to be, it's always, every year, and when you

:16:01.:16:03.

leave even if you don't - I can't wait until next year for the

:16:04.:16:06.

opportunity again. Last year we had a chance to win it and the tyre

:16:07.:16:11.

issue stopped us from doing that. This is a new year. We have a great

:16:12.:16:16.

car. Coming here with the confidence that we have, I have a chance this

:16:17.:16:20.

weekend, it's unlike any other Grand Prix weekend or any other year I

:16:21.:16:24.

have had since even 2008, I didn't realise I could have won it until

:16:25.:16:30.

the start, you know. This weekend we come into it knowing the opportunity

:16:31.:16:34.

is there, have to work towards it. That was Lewis speaking yesterday.

:16:35.:16:38.

The long interview that Lee carried out with him, you can see that on

:16:39.:16:44.

our qualifying programme. Qualifying starts at 11. 55 on BBC2. A long

:16:45.:16:52.

interview with Lewis Hamilton and if you want to hear the interview with

:16:53.:16:58.

Radio 5 that's on the podcast, talking about coming into this event

:16:59.:17:02.

and that can be downloaded, as well. The track looks spectacular. We are

:17:03.:17:05.

looking from the helicopter shots at the moment over the Silverstone

:17:06.:17:09.

circuit. It's such a popular venue. The drivers love the fast corners,

:17:10.:17:12.

we have been talking about them a little bit. Of course, it's an

:17:13.:17:16.

opportunity for them to really test themselves, if you like, the highest

:17:17.:17:21.

G-forces of the year will be exerted. Absolutely. We had 160mph

:17:22.:17:31.

lap here back in 1985. The point is whatever you get, they do love it as

:17:32.:17:34.

a challenge. They know it's a proper track. You can let the car go. You

:17:35.:17:39.

can get the best out of a Formula One car and that's what they all

:17:40.:17:42.

love. Alan, you have driven all sorts of cars here over the years.

:17:43.:17:46.

Give us some of your thoughts on driving Silverstone. Also driven it

:17:47.:17:51.

in all sorts of configurations. The old circuit when you think back to

:17:52.:17:57.

the Mansell battles was extremely fast. Five corners and you had to

:17:58.:18:02.

really hold on to the car as you were throwing it in and attacking

:18:03.:18:06.

the circuit. That's on a - that sort of general feeling has stayed the

:18:07.:18:14.

same. Still high-speed corners, and names that make you shiver a little

:18:15.:18:17.

bit when you think about it, but the thing about this track is it's one

:18:18.:18:28.

that's got all these little I had I - I think it suits a driver that

:18:29.:18:32.

will attack it. You don't sort of gently build up to this circuit. You

:18:33.:18:35.

have to grab hold of it and take it and then it will give you something

:18:36.:18:39.

back in a fast lap time. We are having a look inside the Mercedes

:18:40.:18:47.

pit. It's lovely to see they have the car that raced here in 1954, if

:18:48.:18:52.

it's the actual car. They didn't win on that occasion, they were beaten

:18:53.:18:59.

by Ferrari. They brought the streamliner car, but found it hard

:19:00.:19:03.

to position it and I think hit one or two bales of straw going around.

:19:04.:19:07.

It used to be different in those days. Just a bit! Lovely to see the

:19:08.:19:16.

car here. Yeah, that was the great thing in 55, did he or did he not

:19:17.:19:22.

win that race? That was Aintree. Mercedes winning a one-two, which is

:19:23.:19:26.

what they're looking at doing that here. They won last year thanks to

:19:27.:19:32.

Nico Rosberg but Hamilton was leading from pole position. He was

:19:33.:19:36.

unlucky. He had that tyre problem last year. Pole position is

:19:37.:19:39.

something he needs. He has messed up the last three qualifying sessions.

:19:40.:19:43.

Going back to talking about the rivalry, it's close enough to put

:19:44.:19:47.

him under pressure, obviously. If you go back... Stop the car, stop

:19:48.:19:54.

the car and switch off. Oh, that's a bit unfortunate. Alan,

:19:55.:20:00.

can you find out what's going on at all for Lotus? Yes, I was just

:20:01.:20:05.

walking down. Lined up at the end of the pit lane. There was McLaren and

:20:06.:20:12.

Williams behind him, they had to abort their practice start because

:20:13.:20:24.

Maldonado had technical problem. It certainly hasn't been a lucky year

:20:25.:20:27.

for that boy. He did choose number 13. It's his permanent race number.

:20:28.:20:30.

A few people have been saying since the beginning of the year, maybe

:20:31.:20:36.

that wasn't such a good idea. Susie has chosen number 41. Haven't the

:20:37.:20:42.

story on that. Wonder what the story is. A lot of drivers have gone for

:20:43.:20:46.

numbers that were successful for them in their carting days. Susie is

:20:47.:20:52.

now back out on track. No lap times have been set by anybody as yet. We

:20:53.:20:56.

are still waiting for anyone to do a flying lap.

:20:57.:21:00.

That's an interesting bit - they have all the names of the team on

:21:01.:21:05.

the side of the Marussia, by the look of it. That's a nice bit of

:21:06.:21:09.

support for the people that put in hard work. And they've been rewarded

:21:10.:21:13.

a bit this year because they've some points on the board. That was great

:21:14.:21:18.

to see in Monaco and so important for teams like that to get points on

:21:19.:21:24.

the board, it makes an opportunity of finishing in the top ten in the

:21:25.:21:29.

constructors' championship, get more money which is their lifeblood.

:21:30.:21:32.

They've a decent chance of holding on to that, it's Caterham and Sauber

:21:33.:21:39.

they're ahead of and you don't see those scoring a point. A few cars at

:21:40.:21:43.

the end of the pit lane. We are seeing practice starts here,

:21:44.:21:47.

presumably? We are, getting into the position to get a first feel of the

:21:48.:21:50.

starts. It's a difficult one here at Silverstone, if you are too far down

:21:51.:21:53.

the pit lane you actually have to then accelerate up through the

:21:54.:21:57.

right-hander and that's a low grip surface and the barriers are close

:21:58.:22:09.

to you. Sauber parked past the line. He has started his practice start

:22:10.:22:13.

after the line. Normally that isn't quite technically allowed.

:22:14.:22:21.

OK. We will watch that. DRS in operation for Susie Wolff. Two

:22:22.:22:30.

around this track. The other one is heading towards stow corner. A

:22:31.:22:36.

couple of opportunities to use that drag reduction system.

:22:37.:22:39.

Still yet to see anybody complete a full flying lap.

:22:40.:22:44.

But quite a few cars on track now. 15 cars on track, just seven

:22:45.:22:59.

still... The technical boss at Toro Rosso was having a conference with

:23:00.:23:03.

journalists yesterday and saying how impressed he is with Daniil Kvyat,

:23:04.:23:12.

he is fast and said he also listens. He has confidence but listens to

:23:13.:23:15.

what the team tell him and puts it into practice. So far, the Russian

:23:16.:23:20.

has driven well, hasn't he, Tony? He has. He has looked as if he was born

:23:21.:23:27.

to it the moment he got in the car. The car is driven with confidence.

:23:28.:23:31.

He looks like he has been doing it ten years. Susie Wolff sets the

:23:32.:23:35.

first time and fasters for the moment. Faster than Button and

:23:36.:23:41.

Ericsson. Top of He has been supportive of her the

:23:42.:24:10.

whole time. That's one for him to take on his phone. A little bit of

:24:11.:24:14.

lock-up. But again she managed to release the

:24:15.:24:20.

brake and keep the wheel turning which is important.

:24:21.:24:24.

Everybody on the hard tyre this morning.

:24:25.:24:33.

McLaren there didn't look particularly good. Looked like it

:24:34.:24:37.

had a lot of understeer there. Beginning to go quicker now, Button

:24:38.:24:46.

and Magnussen. The pink helmet shows up brilliantly well, we won't get it

:24:47.:24:50.

wrong between those two this weekend. Into the last couple of

:24:51.:24:59.

corners. This should be a fast time. Rosberg just seen go fastest.

:25:00.:25:05.

Good to see a dry first practice session. Looking back at the

:25:06.:25:08.

records, the only time that the session was dry for first practice

:25:09.:25:14.

on this revised circuit, which was introduced in 2010, was actually

:25:15.:25:18.

2010. Every year since then, 11, is it and 13, we have had either rain

:25:19.:25:22.

or dampness on circuit and haven't had particularly representative lap

:25:23.:25:25.

times. So great start to the Silverstone weekend. The sun is

:25:26.:25:29.

shining but Susie Wolff has stopped. She's come to a stop. Out on track.

:25:30.:25:35.

Now, it looks like she just pulled over. So, what is going on there I

:25:36.:25:41.

am not sure. Maybe they've had some sort of technical problem. That's

:25:42.:25:45.

des pointing. Let's -- disappointing. Let's hope they can

:25:46.:25:48.

get something reset and send her on the way.

:25:49.:25:57.

Sounded like something happened with oil pressure and everything stopped.

:25:58.:26:02.

It may be the system just shut down. If it was reading zero oil pressure

:26:03.:26:06.

I am sure the system would shut down. That's a very disappointing.

:26:07.:26:11.

Sir Frank Williams watching, everybody wondering what's going on

:26:12.:26:14.

at this stage. If they can't get the car back that will be the end of her

:26:15.:26:18.

session, which would be bitterly disappointing. But she's just got to

:26:19.:26:24.

cope with this and get the car out of the way. Already taken her gloves

:26:25.:26:28.

off, which indicates she's not confident she's going to be getting

:26:29.:26:32.

going once again. Oh, dear, what a disappointing way

:26:33.:26:37.

to perhaps end this session. Williams has been reliable this

:26:38.:26:40.

year. So, what a time for it to go wrong.

:26:41.:26:56.

Yeah, that's a real shame. It does happen with these cars. The last

:26:57.:27:03.

race Vettel, his car shut down. Obviously this is a different

:27:04.:27:08.

engine, but sometimes you make a demand and ask for an engine map and

:27:09.:27:13.

in Vettel's case it wasn't accepted and it shut down. The only way out

:27:14.:27:18.

was like a 60-second reset which is why he didn't go anywhere for a

:27:19.:27:22.

minute. This is on board Rosberg as sues - he ran wide. Wonder what we

:27:23.:27:27.

were looking at there. Made a mistake himself as he came through.

:27:28.:27:31.

But didn't cause him any problems. Just looking at slow-motion action

:27:32.:27:37.

of one or two drivers, getting used to the grip available this weekend.

:27:38.:27:44.

Susie Wolff in trouble. And Maldonado having problems, have you

:27:45.:27:47.

been able to find out more about that Yes, the team are quickly

:27:48.:27:55.

working on the car, it's the motor generator unit. It has failed and

:27:56.:28:02.

effectively that stopped the car. The trick, I think, or the

:28:03.:28:08.

difficulty is they get five of these units for the season and I reckon he

:28:09.:28:13.

must be close, if not at his 5th one for the year, so it's a bitter blow,

:28:14.:28:18.

not necessarily because he is losing this first practice while the team

:28:19.:28:21.

change that, also it might very soon incur a penalty if he goes over the

:28:22.:28:25.

five. I think you are right. We are going to see a few teams getting to

:28:26.:28:29.

the point of having grid penalty it's for using -- pen yaments for

:28:30.:28:33.

using more. -- penalties for using more. Each bit of that engine is

:28:34.:28:37.

allocated, if you have a 5th turbo, for example, that's your limit. One

:28:38.:28:40.

more after that and you are into the penalties for the next race. Next

:28:41.:28:43.

year it's going to be four. That's right. Even more limited. Let's ride

:28:44.:28:50.

with Lewis Hamilton here. A good lap here. Not as quick as Jess son

:28:51.:28:53.

button. -- Jess son button. He is being watched closely by the

:28:54.:29:03.

technical boss at Mercedes. For many of these teams it's not only a home

:29:04.:29:07.

nation race, it's also a race that's down the road. Mercedes, for

:29:08.:29:13.

example, very short trip. Something like eight of the 11 teams based

:29:14.:29:17.

within 125 kilometres of this circuit. So, that tells you how much

:29:18.:29:21.

of a British-based sport Formula One is and the history of the place and

:29:22.:29:26.

why they want to be here and want to see the cars performing and the

:29:27.:29:29.

people from the factory come. It's very much a family thing. They all

:29:30.:29:35.

love being here. On board the Force India. A little bit of a lock-up.

:29:36.:29:44.

Ofs able to bring the car back to the main track. Button is fastest.

:29:45.:29:55.

Susie Wolff's session seems to be over and that's disappointing. All

:29:56.:29:59.

she managed to do was four lapse. One of those was an installation

:30:00.:30:03.

lap. She hadn't really got going at all. Her sector times were beginning

:30:04.:30:07.

to improve but it looks as though it's all over and that's bitterly

:30:08.:30:11.

disappointing. That's the way moat are racing is sometimes. - motor

:30:12.:30:15.

racing is sometimes. You can get in touch with us using the hashtag BBC

:30:16.:30:46.

F1. We are riding with Nico Rosberg. Jenson Button says it seems like

:30:47.:30:49.

they are overheating the front. Really to go further in the year for

:30:50.:30:54.

we can think about whether Nico Rosberg has enough in hand. The

:30:55.:31:01.

margin sounds like a lot, but you get 25 points for a victory. After

:31:02.:31:07.

Canada, somebody asked, can Lewis Hamilton catch up? It was said,

:31:08.:31:16.

there are seeking races left -- there are 13 races left, including

:31:17.:31:22.

the double points in Abu Dhabi. It is controversial, the double

:31:23.:31:25.

points, and it could come down to that. You need to have such a

:31:26.:31:31.

margin, 50 points, more fun, over your team-mate, and that will not be

:31:32.:31:39.

easy. He is pushing the car quite hard now. This lap time is pretty

:31:40.:31:49.

rapid. And a hit for Felipe Massa! He has hit the wall very hard. A

:31:50.:31:54.

terrible start to the day for Williams, one car stopped, one car

:31:55.:31:58.

crashed. The red flag has been brought out. After a brilliant

:31:59.:32:05.

weekend in Austria, Pole position, a third place and a fourth place,

:32:06.:32:09.

their home Grand Prix has started off terribly. Felipe Massa has hit

:32:10.:32:16.

the wall pretty hard. That is the pit lane entry, he has lost it on

:32:17.:32:25.

the exit of the corner. EVERYTHING -- RADIO: Everything OK? He has put

:32:26.:32:31.

a wheel over the curb, by the looks of it. He is going into his 200th

:32:32.:32:39.

Grand Prix. You would not expect somebody of his experience and

:32:40.:32:46.

knowledge, he has never had tremendous results here, but what a

:32:47.:32:54.

way to start for Williams. That is awful, they scored 27 points at the

:32:55.:32:57.

last race, they thought they had moved on. We are expecting him to

:32:58.:33:05.

put a wheel over the edge on the left-hand side. Yes, he gets on the

:33:06.:33:11.

artificial grass and slams into the barrier. Hundreds of thousands of

:33:12.:33:17.

pounds worth of damage in just a moment, a fraction of a second. He

:33:18.:33:24.

hit the back hard. Look at the rear suspension. The gearbox has taken a

:33:25.:33:30.

pounding, the rear wing has been ripped off. Alan, what a terrible

:33:31.:33:40.

start. He was just getting the wheel over there, it is a very fast exit.

:33:41.:33:45.

If you have got any sort of steering angle, the front bites and the rear

:33:46.:33:52.

comes round. We saw it with Fernando Alonso in the damp conditions, going

:33:53.:33:57.

into the wall on the right-hand side. For the team coming off a

:33:58.:34:04.

fantastic result in Austria, they were getting more confident and

:34:05.:34:08.

aggressive, and with both cars being out at the moment, this will knock

:34:09.:34:14.

them back severely. Felipe Massa, after the joy of Austria, trudging

:34:15.:34:19.

back, he knows it was his error. It is difficult to admit to it, but

:34:20.:34:31.

that is all you can do. They might end up with just Valtteri Bottas'

:34:32.:34:36.

data from the next session. It was not likely to be quite as strong a

:34:37.:34:41.

circuit for them as Austria, but they were good in Spain, they would

:34:42.:34:49.

have been in the battle. We are expecting Red Bull to be stronger

:34:50.:34:53.

this weekend, it is difficult to say about the others. Ferrari might be

:34:54.:34:58.

there. But this will hurt Williams considerably. A very difficult

:34:59.:35:03.

start. Such a shame for Felipe Massa. At the last race, Rob Smedley

:35:04.:35:09.

said he seems to be in a better place, he feels comfortable, and he

:35:10.:35:17.

has come off the back of having to take on Fernando Alonso at Ferrari.

:35:18.:35:22.

Rob said, Fernando Alonso is a fantastic capacitor, it is every

:35:23.:35:31.

session. He has come away from that, he felt great at Williams, and he

:35:32.:35:36.

has had for non-finishes in the first eight races, sometimes not

:35:37.:35:42.

through his own fault. He looked to be getting there, and then we see

:35:43.:35:49.

this. You have got the grams meter, it will be interesting to see that.

:35:50.:35:56.

He just runs too wide. Off he goes. There is a sensor in the car, and if

:35:57.:36:11.

the reading is beyond a certain level, it lights the medical light

:36:12.:36:16.

in the car and back in race control, so it tells the medics he has had an

:36:17.:36:20.

impact beyond a certain level. I imagine that would have triggered

:36:21.:36:27.

it. They are discussing what has been a difficult start to the day.

:36:28.:36:33.

The only slight silver lining, we saw the recovery truck going to

:36:34.:36:38.

Susie Wolff's car, and I wonder if they can get that car back, and she

:36:39.:36:43.

might get some laps in. Somewhat ironic, her team-mate crashing out

:36:44.:36:49.

and causing this red flag, but let's hope they might be able to get the

:36:50.:36:55.

other car returned. That car will hopefully be lifted out of the way.

:36:56.:37:00.

We were talking about Williams' chances, what about Red Bull? They

:37:01.:37:05.

had a difficult time in Austria, with the retirement of Sebastian

:37:06.:37:10.

Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo was disappointed with himself, but there

:37:11.:37:15.

is more optimism, as we found when we spoke to Daniel Ricciardo

:37:16.:37:17.

yesterday. We can be more optimistic. Whether

:37:18.:37:23.

we can be crazily optimistic and expect to be up there with

:37:24.:37:27.

Mercedes, probably not, we will take baby steps for now. But on paper, it

:37:28.:37:34.

should suit us more. If we can get the car working with high-speed

:37:35.:37:39.

stuff, which it normally does, we should be more competitive, just

:37:40.:37:45.

behind Mercedes. But let's see how we go on Friday. It is a track I

:37:46.:37:51.

enjoyed a lot, whether that council anything, we will see.

:37:52.:37:56.

Felipe Massa, you have got to feel for him. He does not want to get

:37:57.:38:05.

back! You are on full view. He is getting a lovely reception, but it

:38:06.:38:09.

is not the way you want to be presenting yourself. It will not be

:38:10.:38:17.

so warm when he gets back! All of the big brass from Williams are here

:38:18.:38:21.

this weekend. Their new motorhome made its debut this weekend, they

:38:22.:38:24.

were kind enough to invite us in this morning. Claire was hanging

:38:25.:38:32.

pictures yesterday. Lee McKenzie is with Felipe Massa.

:38:33.:38:42.

Are you OK? Yes, I am fine. Are you OK? No issues whatsoever? Are you

:38:43.:38:48.

sure? 100%. Tell us about the accident. I went on the outside of

:38:49.:38:59.

the curb, it pushed the inside. It is a shame to start the day like

:39:00.:39:02.

this. How much damage was done? A lot.

:39:03.:39:08.

Well done for diving in and getting anything out of him. He has been in

:39:09.:39:17.

similar situations before, we have got a red flag, the session has been

:39:18.:39:22.

paused. Jenson Button waiting to come back out. His time of the

:39:23.:39:27.

fastest for a while, but he has been pushed down to eighth place. There

:39:28.:39:32.

is not a huge amount of optimism from McLaren. One person asks what

:39:33.:39:37.

upgrades McLaren have brought for this special weekend. It is a home

:39:38.:39:44.

race for them. I do not get the vibe is that they are expecting anything

:39:45.:39:48.

great. I do not think there is anything sensational. They are

:39:49.:39:53.

looking at a strategic introduction of updates of the season goes on.

:39:54.:40:02.

Alan, what have you got? On the back of McLaren, with the hard and medium

:40:03.:40:09.

tyres, generating temperature is important, and that is what they

:40:10.:40:13.

have struggled with on the front tyres, especially Jenson Button. A

:40:14.:40:18.

couple of years ago, they were very fast when it was hot, and they

:40:19.:40:23.

struggled when it got colder. If it is a hot weekend, they have got half

:40:24.:40:28.

a chance, but if not, it will be a tough weekend. This circuit is

:40:29.:40:35.

dependent on a red and, which is a point of weakness with McLaren. The

:40:36.:40:43.

last Grand Prix, in Austria, big, long straights and traction, but

:40:44.:40:45.

this is about a wry dynamic downforce. McLaren not expecting

:40:46.:40:52.

great things. Fernando Alonso having a tough year again. The car not

:40:53.:40:57.

proving to be as competitive as Ferrari would hope. Slightly more

:40:58.:41:03.

worrying for Italian fans generally, one of the bits of news was that

:41:04.:41:06.

Bernie Ecclestone was talking about there being no monster in the

:41:07.:41:18.

future. -- Monza I do not take it too seriously. We have seen him

:41:19.:41:26.

employ these tactics before. He has spoken about the commercial

:41:27.:41:31.

agreement being a disaster, it is just trying to get them to make a

:41:32.:41:41.

commitment to improving the track. Let's hear what Fernando Alonso

:41:42.:41:42.

said. We do not have a big part in these

:41:43.:41:57.

decisions, we just drive. We would prefer to drive with the spectators

:41:58.:42:05.

around, so I think Monza has been quite good for a lot of us. If you

:42:06.:42:12.

race for Ferrari or another team, it is a great atmosphere. It was the

:42:13.:42:17.

same in Austria, if you drive for Red Bull or another team, you feel

:42:18.:42:21.

the warm atmosphere and the passion for motor racing. Some circuits are

:42:22.:42:30.

nicer to race than others, where we race alone, with empty grandstands,

:42:31.:42:35.

but we do not have a big part in these decisions. We will try to put

:42:36.:42:41.

on a good show for whatever clap we have.

:42:42.:42:47.

There is Susie Wolff's car. The problems for her team-mate's car...

:42:48.:42:55.

Both of the cars are in the pit lane. One is complete, Susie

:42:56.:43:04.

Wolff's, it was an engine problem, so whether they can reset something

:43:05.:43:06.

or whether it is seriously mechanical, the team will be itching

:43:07.:43:13.

to get to grips with it. But Felipe Massa's car will take a bit longer.

:43:14.:43:19.

It is a shame for Susie Wolff, people underestimate the amount of

:43:20.:43:24.

effort she has put into it. You read stuff and they talk about it being a

:43:25.:43:35.

publicity stunt. She had a neck issue last year, she has taken it

:43:36.:43:41.

very seriously. She did 86 laps here last year, she was bruised and

:43:42.:43:49.

battered, a huge out of effort. Her husband said, what have you done to

:43:50.:43:53.

my wife, she has a neck like Mike Tyson? Ten years ago, she finished

:43:54.:44:05.

fifth in a championship in which the top three included Paul di Resta.

:44:06.:44:12.

She massacred one driver in that championship, and he drove for

:44:13.:44:17.

Marussia twice last year. She is no mean performer. She is used to

:44:18.:44:22.

driving in front of huge crowds, she is making her way back into the

:44:23.:44:30.

garage. She raced seven years for Mercedes in DTM, massive crowds.

:44:31.:44:38.

The engine has gone, terminal. The inside has gone. Unfortunately.

:44:39.:44:47.

Gutted. We just heard it is terminal, the

:44:48.:44:54.

engine has gone, and internal problem. It is all over, but she

:44:55.:45:06.

does have Germany lined up, she is due to drive the car again in this

:45:07.:45:13.

session in Germany. It's such a shame. A circuit she

:45:14.:45:17.

knew and prepared for. It's crushing really. So disappointing. She hasn't

:45:18.:45:21.

had a decent chance to get some lapse in. She did four lapse in

:45:22.:45:25.

total. One of those was an installation lap. She hadn't really

:45:26.:45:28.

started to put a lap together at that point. Her session is over. So,

:45:29.:45:38.

very, very sad. I was there the last time in 92, and she tried in Brazil

:45:39.:45:55.

in Mexico and South Africa. We are going for a package that gives us

:45:56.:46:04.

more to get the high speed. They have to do a front ride. We are

:46:05.:46:11.

happy to make the trade-off and go from there. We are still OK on plan.

:46:12.:46:15.

We are not meant to go out for another seven minutes. So got plenty

:46:16.:46:19.

of time. That message was delayed slightly, of course, the session

:46:20.:46:25.

will restart at 10. 43am. Thank you for your comments. Great to have

:46:26.:46:28.

those. Some of them referring to what we have seen. Simon saying,

:46:29.:46:34.

gutted for Susie Wolff. Still very inspiring. Nice of you guys to still

:46:35.:46:43.

be inspired by what she's done. The sheer amount of work she's done to

:46:44.:46:47.

get into position and the opportunities are infrequent. The

:46:48.:46:52.

opportunities, not just for Susie, but the likes for Danill. There's

:46:53.:47:02.

little opportunity to show what they can do. In Susie's case it was 22

:47:03.:47:07.

years since it last happened. She knows she's not going to win the

:47:08.:47:10.

World Championship, she was hoping to at least be an inspiration for

:47:11.:47:14.

women in motor sport and prove that they can do it. You can reach the

:47:15.:47:20.

top. It's just very sad. Well, Williams having a very poor start to

:47:21.:47:25.

their Silverstone weekend. Their home Grand Prix has not beone well.

:47:26.:47:31.

One car into the barrier and another broken down with engine failure. We

:47:32.:47:34.

will be seeing cars back on track in a moment. Some more of your

:47:35.:47:38.

comments. Dean saying, if Mercedes stopped being dominant which team

:47:39.:47:40.

would be most likely to take advantage? That's a good question,

:47:41.:47:45.

Dean. I think you have to say that Williams and Red Bull have been the

:47:46.:47:48.

nearest challengers to Mercedes and it does depend on the circuits. Red

:47:49.:47:57.

Bull like the faster circuits. We are expecting, as Ricardo was saying

:47:58.:48:04.

earlier. Can't discount Ferrari, they show flashes of pace, it

:48:05.:48:07.

doesn't seem to be all the time. It tends to be Friday pace. Although

:48:08.:48:11.

having said that, Fernando worked wonders to get to the finish

:48:12.:48:15.

somewhere near a Williams in Austria, that was a fabulous drive.

:48:16.:48:21.

You are right, Red Bull, you wonder how quick that Red Bull will go with

:48:22.:48:27.

a Mercedes engine. There is talk about engine changes. There is

:48:28.:48:30.

rumours that Lotus might have a Mercedes engine next year. These

:48:31.:48:33.

things will change. I am sure that Red Bull also are putting a huge

:48:34.:48:37.

amount of effort in to get Renault to up their game. There's been

:48:38.:48:42.

changes there. Caterham, a change of ownership has led to the man who was

:48:43.:48:46.

effectively managing the Caterham team, gone back to Renault now. He

:48:47.:48:51.

is an impressive man. Not sure there was a lot he could do at Caterham to

:48:52.:48:55.

make that team make progress. He is back in the Renault fold. You have

:48:56.:48:59.

to think that Renault are taking this challenge very seriously. They

:49:00.:49:02.

need to make some progress with that. In fairness to them, speaking

:49:03.:49:08.

to both Vettel yesterday and Ricardo, they say the drivability

:49:09.:49:13.

has improved significantly. It seems that the issue is not enough power

:49:14.:49:23.

from the internal combustion engine. They've been impressed by the

:49:24.:49:28.

drivability. That's what has allowed them to get amongst it at some

:49:29.:49:32.

circuits. We are going to have a long interview with Sebastian Vettel

:49:33.:49:35.

this weekend in our BBC coverage, that's something else to watch out

:49:36.:49:41.

for. We saw Max Chiltern a moment ago. He is the third British driver

:49:42.:49:45.

here this weekend. Whilst he might not be up there for a podium finish,

:49:46.:49:50.

he is still excited to be racing at his home Grand Prix. Not

:49:51.:49:55.

particularly, it's not a hard thing, obviously there is a lot of press

:49:56.:49:58.

and stuff to do on the week before. I have been absolutely manic this

:49:59.:50:02.

week. I wouldn't change it for the world. Racing on your home soil in a

:50:03.:50:07.

Formula One race is something which you never forget. I remember last

:50:08.:50:10.

year it was a race I will never forget. It wasn't a perfect race but

:50:11.:50:14.

we had a good battle and I came out on top fighting, you know, I want to

:50:15.:50:18.

have a good race again this year. And put on a good show for the fans.

:50:19.:50:23.

I am probably a bit biased, I would like to think it's one of the

:50:24.:50:26.

biggest races of the year on the calendar, if not the biggest.

:50:27.:50:31.

Testify tens of thousandsen -- we have tens of thousands of people

:50:32.:50:35.

camping, whatever the weather, hopefully we will have a good

:50:36.:50:38.

weekend. We ride on board with Daniil Kvyat.

:50:39.:50:56.

A big grandstand coming up on the exit.

:50:57.:51:01.

The old pits are on the right side, still used for many of the support

:51:02.:51:06.

races here at Silverstone. Flashes down towards the corner.

:51:07.:51:13.

Still a very quick corner. It's down a couple of gears now.

:51:14.:51:29.

The car is hitting the ground a little bit. It really looks pretty

:51:30.:51:35.

stiffly set up for these high-speed corners. There is going to be a

:51:36.:51:39.

change next year. We saw the experiment in Austria of using

:51:40.:51:45.

titanium as the plates as opposed to heavy metal. It doesn't spark in the

:51:46.:51:52.

same way. For next year it was confirmed yesterday that they will

:51:53.:52:01.

be using the titanium. He was saying it wasn't just a gimmick. There is

:52:02.:52:06.

two valid reasons. First of all, the metal being used at the moment it

:52:07.:52:15.

caused a couple of punctures. Also, the material they use at the moment

:52:16.:52:23.

wears - titanium will wear as quickly. They can't run the car and

:52:24.:52:28.

will have to think about that a bit more. Two realistic reasons apart

:52:29.:52:34.

from throughing up a few spectacular sparks for the fans. We will look

:52:35.:52:38.

forward to see how that is. Alan, you have a view of the cars on

:52:39.:52:42.

track. Tell us where you are. A stunning view. I am standing right

:52:43.:52:49.

at the apex of turn one. They fly through the right-hander, the wind

:52:50.:52:59.

is picking up a lot. A Ferrari comes through of Raikkonen. Force India,

:53:00.:53:03.

they'll be good around here because they always have been. There was a

:53:04.:53:06.

much neater line there from the Force India as it comes through. We

:53:07.:53:18.

are with Sebastian Vettel at the moment.

:53:19.:53:22.

I wonder if the four-time world champion is going to get his - pick

:53:23.:53:25.

up his season a little bit this weekend. He has been unlucky. A

:53:26.:53:30.

retirement last time out in Austria. They had that technical glitch.

:53:31.:53:34.

Managed to reset it but they decided to withdraw from the race. He was

:53:35.:53:37.

running right down at the back of the field. Watching him come down

:53:38.:53:48.

now, towards the corner. Where Massa had his accident earlier. Corners

:53:49.:53:52.

Red Bull is normally good on. Vettel has a good record here. Pole

:53:53.:53:56.

position in 2009 and 2010. Always had a race on his hands with his

:53:57.:54:02.

team-mate, though, Mark Webber who was always fast at Silverstone. He

:54:03.:54:12.

was great in the quick corners. Vettel admitted, he said, he is

:54:13.:54:20.

better than me in the quick. Yeah, now he has a fight on his hands with

:54:21.:54:24.

another Australian. That's right, yes not bad for a number two driver

:54:25.:54:30.

said Mark Webber. Mark is joining us on our coverage this weekend and

:54:31.:54:34.

will be giving us tips as to how he was fast here on Silverstone. That's

:54:35.:54:39.

a fun feature to watch out for, perhaps giving away some secrets.

:54:40.:54:46.

The programme starting 11. 55 on Saturday. We will learn his tricks

:54:47.:54:48.

before the qualifying session itself. Maldonado's car still being

:54:49.:54:58.

worked on. This track should suit Lotus better than Austria. They've

:54:59.:55:08.

had a poor run of tracks since - had a lot of problems, hopefully will go

:55:09.:55:13.

better. Lee has managed to catch up with Susie. Let's go to the pits.

:55:14.:55:19.

Thank you, Susie, such a disappointing end after the work you

:55:20.:55:23.

put in. What was the problem? Really tough day but that's Formula One

:55:24.:55:26.

sometimes. We had an oil pressure problem which cut the engine off.

:55:27.:55:32.

Car is back already and the guys are looking at it, hopefully they can

:55:33.:55:35.

find the problem and get it fixed. Describe the emotions of when you

:55:36.:55:40.

headed out of the garage and went out in front of the fans, we saw

:55:41.:55:44.

your names on banners, as well. First of all, a huge thank you for

:55:45.:55:47.

the support I have had. It really means a lot. It helped a lot. It was

:55:48.:55:52.

wonderful. Going out on to the track was the best feeling because

:55:53.:55:55.

although there's been a lot of media around my run actually when you put

:55:56.:55:59.

the helmet on and you are in the car that's when it's the best, just you

:56:00.:56:02.

in the car. As soon as I left the pit lane everything felt good. I

:56:03.:56:06.

knew what I had to to and had a good feeling in the car. I was looking

:56:07.:56:09.

forward to it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a short run. But

:56:10.:56:13.

that's life sometimes. Now I have to keep my head up and look forward to

:56:14.:56:20.

Hockenheim. This is the first of several days you are doing, as well.

:56:21.:56:24.

How much do you think you were able to put the nerves behind you and get

:56:25.:56:27.

out there, that you can take forward and go to Hockenheim and feel that

:56:28.:56:29.

it might only have been four lapse but it's four lapse more than before

:56:30.:56:35.

today -- laps? I felt ready for the day. The team had done a fantastic

:56:36.:56:38.

job of preparing me. I knew exactly what I had to do. For me it was good

:56:39.:56:45.

to get that first run on an actual race weekend in the bag. Now I can

:56:46.:56:51.

keep working towards Hockenheim with knowing what exactly what I have to

:56:52.:56:54.

do there and exactly thousand will feel. You were in the car -- exactly

:56:55.:57:01.

how it will feel. What does it mean for Marcus, the guys will be working

:57:02.:57:05.

hard on Philip's car, as well. Of course it's tough. It's not the

:57:06.:57:09.

great start to the weekend we hoped for. We will move on and pick

:57:10.:57:16.

ourselves up. My car came back quite quickly, they'll be able to get it

:57:17.:57:20.

ready in time and that's important he gets running today. Bad luck,

:57:21.:57:23.

thank you for talking to us. Thank you.

:57:24.:57:26.

Well, she's dealing with the PR side of it well. Some of your comments

:57:27.:57:32.

coming in, thank you for those. One saying, unlucky for Susie, she's

:57:33.:57:36.

done so much in the motor sport world. It's a shame to see her

:57:37.:57:41.

career start like this. Another saying I feel for Susie, when you

:57:42.:57:45.

get a chance you need to show what you can do quickly. She didn't get

:57:46.:57:50.

that chance at all. So, denied the opportunity. But motor racing, as we

:57:51.:57:54.

know, Tony, can be awfully cruel, sometimes. It's a cruel, cruel

:57:55.:57:58.

sport. Not all the time, but it can be. It can indeed. Sebastian Vettel

:57:59.:58:02.

is finding that out this year a little bit, as well, after having so

:58:03.:58:07.

much success the last four years. One asking do we think Red Bull

:58:08.:58:12.

could beat Mercedes this weekend? I think it's unlikely unless Mercedes

:58:13.:58:15.

really shoot themselves in the foot. Who knows, they've had mistakes,

:58:16.:58:21.

errors, things didn't go well in Canada. Now this isn't a heavy

:58:22.:58:29.

circuit on brakes. It's something like 8% of the lapse on brakes, one

:58:30.:58:34.

of the lower percentages. A bigger problem is getting enough energy

:58:35.:58:37.

recovery from that inspect of braking. I did speak quickly to

:58:38.:58:44.

Renault, I felt the same as you it might be difficult, they said

:58:45.:58:46.

although the amount of braking and level of brake something not as high

:58:47.:58:51.

you still have a lot of corners. Periods slowing down and that's all

:58:52.:58:55.

regeneration time. In fact, he said, the recoverable energy is not a big

:58:56.:59:04.

deal. He also said... A problem at the moment, will advise. He also

:59:05.:59:10.

said that fuel is not a major factor, in other words, this isn't

:59:11.:59:13.

one of the highest fuel consumption tracks. You are maintaining a

:59:14.:59:17.

minimum speed. Alan, I guess that makes sense in terms of this being a

:59:18.:59:21.

more fast and flowing track. Yes, it is. It's a much longer circuit than

:59:22.:59:26.

Austria. Therefore, they use double the fuel anyway. However, it is a

:59:27.:59:30.

fast and flowing circuit. With that you can recover quite a lot of fuel

:59:31.:59:36.

consumption just by doing lift-off. Here at turn one there is a few cars

:59:37.:59:39.

going through flat but that's mainly the Red Bull. Everybody else is

:59:40.:59:42.

having to lift off. That's not due to fuel, that's purely due to the

:59:43.:59:50.

wind blowing the cars around and rear instability. Did you happen to

:59:51.:00:02.

see Sauber? Yes, we both sort of took a sharp intake of breath. The

:00:03.:00:12.

rear was dancing around behind as he went through. That seems to be where

:00:13.:00:16.

the problem lies for most of the cars. The Red Bull just flashed

:00:17.:00:19.

through in front of me. I don't think there was a slightest hint of

:00:20.:00:27.

a lift there between the Red Bull. Nico Rosberg is currently the

:00:28.:00:34.

fastest, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who is faster than Fernando Alonso

:00:35.:00:40.

at the moment. RADIO: You can continue the run for the moment.

:00:41.:00:44.

They have recovered that problem for Nico Rosberg. The Toro Rosso cars

:00:45.:00:53.

showing a good turn of pace again, but they are desperate for

:00:54.:01:00.

reliability. Daniel Ricciardo has been pushed down by Kevin Magnussen.

:01:01.:01:08.

Lewis Hamilton down in 11th place, but he has just gone fastest in the

:01:09.:01:09.

first sector. Maldonado. The car is in trouble.

:01:10.:01:34.

The other Caterham has not set a time,

:01:35.:01:36.

Maldonado. The car is in trouble. The other Caterham has not set a but

:01:37.:01:39.

hopefully we will see him. Fernando Alonso improving a little bit. The

:01:40.:01:47.

fastest middle sector for Fernando Alonso.

:01:48.:01:57.

Daniel Ricciardo has moved up to second, and now Fernando Alonso

:01:58.:02:07.

moves to second. And now Lewis Hamilton go second. That is the

:02:08.:02:16.

point, it is the closeness, as we said earlier. The other rivalries,

:02:17.:02:23.

you knew that Ayrton Senna was quicker than Alain Prost, but it is

:02:24.:02:29.

not letting Lewis Hamilton relax. If you go back to Monaco, there might

:02:30.:02:36.

have been something iffy, but he did not get his first run, so that let

:02:37.:02:42.

Nico Rosberg get into that position. He is obviously under pressure. Nico

:02:43.:02:47.

Rosberg has gone even quicker. I wonder if Lewis Hamilton will do the

:02:48.:02:52.

same. Quite similar plans at the moment. This was a moment ago for

:02:53.:02:58.

Fernando Alonso. A bit of under steer. He just got it back. The

:02:59.:03:04.

front tyres scrubbing across the surface of the track. The car not

:03:05.:03:09.

responding quite as well as he would have liked. But he held it together,

:03:10.:03:15.

and he is third fastest, behind Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Just

:03:16.:03:22.

over half an hour to go. There is the boss of Mercedes and the triple

:03:23.:03:32.

world champion Nicky louder. He may be a bit more relaxed now that his

:03:33.:03:39.

wife is no longer on the track, but he will be disappointed for her.

:03:40.:03:53.

RADIO: 0.2 on the first sector, zero on the middle sector, and we need to

:03:54.:03:58.

find 0.3 on the final sector. A bit of work to be done. He backed off,

:03:59.:04:04.

so he has not gone for another really quick lap. I wonder if he

:04:05.:04:11.

will keep it quiet until we get into the main part of qualifying. Last

:04:12.:04:17.

year, he was on pole by over 0.4 seconds. Virtually 0.5 seconds.

:04:18.:04:26.

Joining us is Christian Horner. Good to have you with us, tell us how the

:04:27.:04:32.

plan is going at this stage, you are currently in fourth place and sixth

:04:33.:04:37.

place. We are working through a programme, settling in to the

:04:38.:04:42.

circuit, working on the setup, both guys are dialling themselves in.

:04:43.:04:51.

Both getting used to the conditions. It is Marcus Ericsson who spun,

:04:52.:04:55.

hopefully that will not cause any delays in the programme. This is

:04:56.:05:00.

more of a Red Bull circuit, Austria was not especially suited to the

:05:01.:05:06.

strengths and weaknesses, but this track is where downforce is king, so

:05:07.:05:11.

can you challenge Mercedes? I am not sure anybody can at the moment, they

:05:12.:05:16.

are looking pretty racy. But we should be better suited than we were

:05:17.:05:22.

in Austria. We are closer to the pace. But it is quite a gap to Nico

:05:23.:05:31.

Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. A bit of weather tomorrow, so we will see.

:05:32.:05:35.

What is the story in getting more horsepower or energy out of

:05:36.:05:41.

Renault? How hard you pushing? What are the plans? They have had a

:05:42.:05:47.

management shuffle, which is a positive sign. He is a good guy,

:05:48.:05:52.

somebody who have worked with before, and he will make the right

:05:53.:05:57.

changes and push in the right direction. But there is plenty of

:05:58.:06:03.

work to do. We have got to try to close the gap. We can see why Marcus

:06:04.:06:10.

Ericsson is on the inside of Becketts, but he did not let -- hit

:06:11.:06:16.

anything. Coming back to the weather forecast, you mean we are looking at

:06:17.:06:22.

rain over the weekend? When will we get it? Originally, they said it

:06:23.:06:28.

would be horrible on Sunday, but it has been brought forward to

:06:29.:06:33.

tomorrow. And again to Overton night, into tomorrow morning, and it

:06:34.:06:38.

should be better tomorrow afternoon. It seems to be changing all the

:06:39.:06:43.

time. We are in the British summer, of course! Thank you for joining us,

:06:44.:06:48.

Christian, it will be great to hear from you later over the weekend.

:06:49.:06:54.

Marcus Ericsson, that is a shame, it looked like the car was running, but

:06:55.:06:58.

he has been caught out by the two rain as he tried to get it back onto

:06:59.:07:02.

the track. He has had a tough baptism. He has joined the team, it

:07:03.:07:11.

is not a great car. Early on in the season, he had his first wet weather

:07:12.:07:16.

session and he went off. It has been such a tough learning process. They

:07:17.:07:22.

have gone through a change of ownership since we last saw them,

:07:23.:07:27.

Tony Fernandez no longer owns the team. He always threatened that he

:07:28.:07:36.

was losing interest, he wanted to see a more competitive performance,

:07:37.:07:42.

and now we have a new consortium of people involved. A couple of names

:07:43.:07:50.

involved, the adviser has been involved many times in the past.

:07:51.:07:55.

Yes, we will see how that goes. A former driver as well. You do not

:07:56.:08:03.

often see drivers coming back in a management role. We saw it with HRT

:08:04.:08:10.

a couple of years ago, but are you surprised? Yes. A consortium of

:08:11.:08:18.

investors investing in Caterham, we will see how that goes! You can only

:08:19.:08:27.

make a small fortune out of motor racing if you start with a big one.

:08:28.:08:32.

Bernie Ecclestone has done well for a lot of people, but that team does

:08:33.:08:36.

not look like it will finish in the top ten. It is interesting that

:08:37.:08:42.

somebody has chosen to buy them! We will see what happens. Another team

:08:43.:08:53.

based not too far away. They moved from Norfolk to oxygen a little

:08:54.:09:01.

while ago. -- to Oxfordshire. This session was interrupted by the

:09:02.:09:04.

accident for Felipe Massa earlier, he crashed on the exit to a corner,

:09:05.:09:09.

and we have also seen problems with the other Williams car, Susie Wolff,

:09:10.:09:14.

a major internal problem with her engine. But Mercedes are on top, no

:09:15.:09:21.

great surprise. Nico Rosberg first, Lewis Hamilton second, then Fernando

:09:22.:09:26.

Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo. They will get free medical care at

:09:27.:09:44.

Caterham now that Colin is back, he is a fully qualified dentist! That

:09:45.:09:50.

is a bonus! He has treated drivers in the paddock before! Felipe Massa

:09:51.:09:56.

might need him this morning! It is always good to have a sideline!

:09:57.:10:01.

Lewis Hamilton back on track again, such a crucial weekend for him,

:10:02.:10:06.

looking to win his home Grand Prix, for only the second time. I bet in

:10:07.:10:13.

2008, his second year in Formula One, he thought there would be

:10:14.:10:16.

plenty more, but we have not seen the kind of dominance we saw from

:10:17.:10:25.

Jim Clark in the 60s, across the three different tracks. Brands

:10:26.:10:36.

Hatch, entry and Silverstone. Nigel Mansell, of course. RADIO: The track

:10:37.:10:46.

is now clear. Yes, Nigel Mansell, one of the great heroes of British

:10:47.:10:51.

Formula One, he won five times on home soil, including the European

:10:52.:10:56.

Grand Prix, and he is the steward this weekend. He loves being here.

:10:57.:11:01.

There was something special about his victories here. He knew how to

:11:02.:11:10.

put on a show. I remember the race in 1987, that will never be

:11:11.:11:16.

bettered. Spellbinding stuff. He always had a massive amount of

:11:17.:11:22.

support. If Lewis Hamilton put that car on pole position, that will

:11:23.:11:26.

provide tremendous entertainment. Talking of British drivers, one who

:11:27.:11:31.

was on the grid last year but is not this year, Paul di Resta.

:11:32.:11:36.

Lovely to see you, different from last year, though. Is it tough,

:11:37.:11:43.

being a spectator? Yes. It is great to be here, it is special, but I am

:11:44.:11:49.

missing being involved. But being back in the paddock, seeing what

:11:50.:11:52.

opportunities are about, because once you have the taste, you never

:11:53.:11:57.

lose it, and I am even more dedicated to get back in. It is a

:11:58.:12:03.

challenge, but I will enjoy it and do my utmost. This is business as

:12:04.:12:09.

opposed to pleasure? Yes, you can enjoy what the Grand Prix is, but it

:12:10.:12:16.

is about seeing what opportunities are about, because you need to be in

:12:17.:12:21.

that position to jump in, should anything come up, and keeping your

:12:22.:12:24.

face in front of people who matter. Are there opportunities? It is hard

:12:25.:12:31.

to read. It is still quite early. From this race on to Monza is the

:12:32.:12:36.

key point in the year, it is the silly season. It is when speculation

:12:37.:12:42.

comes, but when you are determined to do something, you need to get

:12:43.:12:46.

yourself there. I can be quite relaxed, I am enjoying DTM, that is

:12:47.:12:51.

my number one think this year, because my services are there, but I

:12:52.:12:58.

am exploring opportunities in Formula One, and that is where your

:12:59.:13:06.

heart lies. But racing DTM is great, being involved with

:13:07.:13:09.

Mercedes-Benz, it is nice to be back in that family, and I will keep

:13:10.:13:15.

working. Dario, we have not seen you very often here, because you have

:13:16.:13:18.

been racing in America, are you enjoying it? Yes, I have never seen

:13:19.:13:24.

this before. I got lost this morning! It is fun to be here, it is

:13:25.:13:30.

good to catch up with Paul, I have not seen him for a couple of months.

:13:31.:13:38.

I would drive the Lotus everyday, so I am looking forward to that. I am

:13:39.:13:44.

here is a global ambassador, it is nice to give something back, it is

:13:45.:13:49.

an online resource for young drivers. I had Jackie Stewart

:13:50.:13:54.

helping me out, and putting people around me who could teach me stuff,

:13:55.:13:58.

but most people do not have those advantages. That is what that does.

:13:59.:14:06.

And having a good time. You are a huge historian when it comes to

:14:07.:14:09.

motorsport, what does it mean for you to be in Jimmy's car this

:14:10.:14:14.

weekend? The 50th anniversary of races here, to drive the Lotus 25 is

:14:15.:14:22.

incredibly special. I will have my replica Jim Clark helmet and a suit

:14:23.:14:29.

on and some bits of memorabilia. He fascinates me, he is my absolute

:14:30.:14:34.

hero. It is an absolute privilege to do that and to see some of the other

:14:35.:14:38.

guys driving these cars. It will be a nice, slow parade. It will have to

:14:39.:14:44.

be slow, because I do not know where this new track goes! If there is a

:14:45.:14:49.

good thing about retirement, it has allowed me to live in the UK again,

:14:50.:14:55.

and to spend time at events like this and catch up with old friends.

:14:56.:15:11.

Tremendous hero of many drivers. And a hero, no doubt, of our own Alan.

:15:12.:15:26.

Alan, you have moved around, a different corner you are watching.

:15:27.:15:29.

Yes. You see the wind has picked up a little bit. The flags are blowing

:15:30.:15:31.

and the cars are getting blown around a lot. The McLaren comes

:15:32.:15:35.

through now. Jenson Button accelerates.

:15:36.:15:45.

It intrigues me, in lighter lower category cars, you can understand

:15:46.:15:50.

them blown around, at this level with this horsepower, you are still

:15:51.:15:54.

obviously aware of that breeze picking up. The limits of physics

:15:55.:16:00.

are the limits of physics and on the edge of the grip level everything

:16:01.:16:06.

that upsets it, and it's gusty now, there is a big gust coming through.

:16:07.:16:10.

If that catches you, and this is an open air field, therefore, where the

:16:11.:16:14.

grandstand ends you get this funnel of air coming through, if it pushes

:16:15.:16:18.

the front of the car a little more, that might have been part of the

:16:19.:16:23.

reason that Massa ran wide because it's exposed out there at that

:16:24.:16:28.

corner. Now one of the Force India is coming through gentle in his

:16:29.:16:36.

approach but then behind him the Force India. Toro Rosso is

:16:37.:16:41.

struggling more with that wind effect. Alan, you are busy watching

:16:42.:16:45.

cars coming through. It's quiet on circuit at the moment. Four cars on

:16:46.:16:48.

track, I think. A couple of things that have come up this week, we are

:16:49.:16:52.

being asked by a few people getting in touch is what are our thoughts on

:16:53.:16:57.

the new idea of having standing restarts for next season, just

:16:58.:17:02.

explain this is the idea when we have a safety car period during the

:17:03.:17:06.

race, instead of the safety car peeling in and then there is a

:17:07.:17:10.

rolling restart in the order, single file, then the safety car will peel

:17:11.:17:14.

in but the cars will come around that last corner, stop on the grid,

:17:15.:17:20.

no mechanics will come out, like it's a formation lap, the lights

:17:21.:17:26.

will come on and off they go. What's your thinking, Alan? We were both in

:17:27.:17:30.

the press conference yesterday when the race director explained the

:17:31.:17:33.

reasons behind that and some of the other changes that were being

:17:34.:17:36.

proposed. Personally, I think if you are leading the race you have done

:17:37.:17:41.

the job to be leading the race and there is an incident outside of your

:17:42.:17:44.

control and it takes your advantage away, you still should have some

:17:45.:17:48.

advantage on the restart. I think that a rolling start is the better

:17:49.:17:53.

way to do it. That's sort of understood. However, this is deemed

:17:54.:17:57.

because the start of the race is probably one of the most exciting

:17:58.:18:00.

parts so there is an opportunity to have a second option of that run to

:18:01.:18:05.

the first turn, then you should have it. I think there will be some

:18:06.:18:11.

incidents. You go back to Monaco and it was a standard start, there was

:18:12.:18:16.

one in the wrong position and two penalties as the race went on and a

:18:17.:18:21.

couple of other drivers, as well. In a standard racing start sometimes

:18:22.:18:23.

they go in the wrong place. Where it's a start where they line up and

:18:24.:18:27.

then go in their racing order, I can see there being some problems as

:18:28.:18:30.

this one is rolled out. It's interesting. Tony, what feedback

:18:31.:18:34.

have you had from the drivers so far? I absolutely endorse everything

:18:35.:18:41.

Alan said. If you worked hard to get that advantage and it's blown away

:18:42.:18:45.

and you have another start and the rest of it, it's a bit harsh. I can

:18:46.:18:51.

jaeks see why it's happened, it's -- exactly see why it's happened, it's

:18:52.:18:55.

entertainment. One of the things I did think about is if you rubbish

:18:56.:19:00.

back to 2008 and Singapore -- remember if you remember back to

:19:01.:19:04.

2008 and Singapore and there was a crash tactically and Alonso won the

:19:05.:19:10.

race. The way these guys think it opens up Formula One to a more of

:19:11.:19:13.

that kind of stuff. Strategic spinning with five lapse to go and

:19:14.:19:17.

the other guy is in second place, that kind of thing. I asked Charlie

:19:18.:19:21.

that yesterday and he said, I don't think we will get more of that, but

:19:22.:19:26.

good question, he said, we might. I don't think that sort of situation

:19:27.:19:30.

is going to arise again. There will be a big hand coming down on top of

:19:31.:19:34.

that one. It's going to be harder for the cars. They're fragile, you

:19:35.:19:41.

have five engines. You have got five pieces of the hybrid systems. If you

:19:42.:19:50.

have a second or third restart then that could take a few cars over that

:19:51.:19:54.

threshold. There might have to be a redesign of the car just to

:19:55.:20:01.

accommodate the potential of one of those situations. Some of the

:20:02.:20:06.

engineers were talking about the clutch systems which are more robust

:20:07.:20:16.

but they're not designed for the possibility you might get three

:20:17.:20:21.

starts. You could consider that. There will be redesign work to do.

:20:22.:20:24.

Two or three drivers mentioned what about a restart with badly worn

:20:25.:20:26.

tyres. Charlie's response was I don't think that will happen,

:20:27.:20:29.

they'll take the opportunity to get a new set. We will see. We will see,

:20:30.:20:33.

yeah. It's definitely going to be in the rules for next year. We will all

:20:34.:20:37.

have to get used to that. There will be certain situations where they

:20:38.:20:41.

won't come back to a standing start, within the first two lapse of the

:20:42.:20:44.

original start and they won't have to line up again. It's something we

:20:45.:20:48.

will all have to get used to next year and see how it works out. On

:20:49.:20:59.

track at the moment, Ricciardo. He has only led three laps in his

:21:00.:21:03.

Formula One year but it doesn't matter, he has that victory to his

:21:04.:21:06.

name. Those last three laps of the Canadian Grand Prix are what

:21:07.:21:09.

mattered. He is having a stellar season, you have to say. There is

:21:10.:21:19.

the disappointed Marcus Ericsson. The end of his particular session.

:21:20.:21:25.

His team-mate has gone out again. There's obviously been trouble for

:21:26.:21:33.

the other car. I think we are going to hurt the

:21:34.:21:37.

gearbox, does that mean they're using a different engine map,

:21:38.:21:41.

different settings that's making a more aggressive gear change? It's

:21:42.:21:45.

hard to know from that comment. Or whether they're worried about the

:21:46.:21:49.

gearbox for another reason. The car is back in the pits now. Fourth

:21:50.:21:53.

fasters so far, the session still led by Mercedes. Rosberg's Mercedes

:21:54.:21:57.

with the fastest time. Hamilton second.

:21:58.:22:01.

We are seeing Red Bull looking more competitive here.

:22:02.:22:08.

Now they've all done a fairly rapid lap at some point during this

:22:09.:22:13.

session they've stayed on the same set of tyres, it's unlikely we will

:22:14.:22:19.

see many improvements. Just watching Max Chiltern here. The

:22:20.:22:35.

British driver has gone a good job in qualifying the last few events.

:22:36.:22:44.

He has evened up the balance a little. It's not a bad effort.

:22:45.:23:05.

He is working on the tyre temperatures, keeping them

:23:06.:23:10.

consistent and where they need to be to deliver the quick laps. They're

:23:11.:23:16.

having a series of battles with Caterham they're generally getting

:23:17.:23:21.

the better of. Haven't new bits or huge upgrades. It's a lack of money

:23:22.:23:29.

in the Kitty, I think. Yes, indeed. Chloe Roberts, Max's girlfriend here

:23:30.:23:32.

this weekend to keep an eye on what's going on. Ricciardo's car is

:23:33.:23:38.

back in the garage. 11-and-a-half minutes to go in this first practice

:23:39.:23:42.

session of the weekend at Silverstone, building up to the

:23:43.:23:45.

British Grand Prix this weekend. The 50th running of a Grand Prix at

:23:46.:23:52.

Silverstone. It started in 1958 on a very hastily cobbled together track

:23:53.:23:56.

which was more of a butterfly shape. Two straits that were heading

:23:57.:23:59.

towards each other on the original layout of the track. They quickly

:24:00.:24:03.

changed that for subsequent races, I am glad to say. Over the years it

:24:04.:24:09.

has evolved. There have been tremendous events here, tremendous

:24:10.:24:13.

races. That history is going to be celebrated this weekend with some of

:24:14.:24:16.

the parades, some classic cars being driven here this weekend. Of course

:24:17.:24:21.

a big classic event coming up here, the historic event in a few weeks,

:24:22.:24:27.

as well, to celebrate some of the older machinery.

:24:28.:24:41.

A reminder, at Williams there is work going on to repair Massa's car

:24:42.:24:48.

from damage when he crashed. Hoping to get him back out later. A lot of

:24:49.:24:59.

work on Bottas car. Pace-wise he is in front and 5-3 up

:25:00.:25:15.

in their personal qualifying battles. He is a bit heavier than

:25:16.:25:23.

Kvyat that you pay penalty for in qualifying. He's done a decent job.

:25:24.:25:27.

Some of his performances have been strong and he suffered reliability.

:25:28.:25:32.

Qualifying he has been Q3 a number of times this year. Talking to James

:25:33.:25:38.

yesterday they've managed to get both cars down to the weight limit

:25:39.:25:46.

now even for Jean-Eric Vergne. Both cars now have to run with a little

:25:47.:25:51.

bit of balance, I believe. There is the Dutchman driving for Caterham in

:25:52.:25:54.

this session. Caterham really haven't been able to

:25:55.:26:12.

put together many lapse. -- laps. Here is Robin crossing the line and

:26:13.:26:16.

going on to a lap. Let's watch imup through the first couple of corners.

:26:17.:26:20.

No way that he is flat through the first corner. We are coming in to

:26:21.:26:23.

this arena section. It's difficult to get the power

:26:24.:26:37.

down. Big chunk of wheel spin as he came

:26:38.:26:44.

through the left-hander. Now beneath the bridge.

:26:45.:26:51.

Watch how the car behaves on exit here.

:26:52.:27:01.

A little tweak as he gets on the throttle. Does a lot of work on the

:27:02.:27:06.

simulator for Caterham, of course, but this is his chance to get behind

:27:07.:27:08.

the wheel of the car in anger. You can see, especially with the

:27:09.:27:28.

Caterham, which is at the lower end of the grid, of course, compared to

:27:29.:27:32.

the high down force we have seen on cars in recent years, they've lost a

:27:33.:27:37.

lot of down force and it's not looking as dramatic, is it? That's

:27:38.:27:41.

one of the things I noticed when I went to that test last year that

:27:42.:27:47.

Susie did. I stood down there. Oh, nearly had a big slide. Locked up a

:27:48.:27:52.

bit. Williams didn't have a lot of down force, Caterham too. The car

:27:53.:27:55.

was noticeably slower through there. You can see it. Let's see the lap

:27:56.:28:02.

time, 1. 43. 3. That's a long way off everybody really. Two-and-a-half

:28:03.:28:05.

second off his team-mate at this stage. I would imagine they're run

:28:06.:28:10.

ago lot of fuel on board. -- running a lot of fuel on board. His tyres

:28:11.:28:14.

are fresh still. He wasn't out in the first part of the session.

:28:15.:28:17.

Proving a bit of a handful the Caterham at the moment. Putting the

:28:18.:28:21.

power down there. Let's look at this lock-up.

:28:22.:28:24.

Locked up the right front which is slightly unusual there. It's usually

:28:25.:28:28.

the inside front. He sorted that out and managed to complete the lap OK.

:28:29.:28:34.

So getting his experience in, but it's not proving to be a

:28:35.:28:36.

particularly straightforward day. We get to the closing moments now.

:28:37.:28:40.

Six-and-a-half minutes to go of this first practice session at

:28:41.:28:45.

Silverstone for the 65th British Grand Prix. 22 times the race has

:28:46.:28:54.

been won by a British driver. Three British drivers in the race

:28:55.:28:58.

this weekend. Lewis Hamilton is the one most people have their hopes

:28:59.:29:02.

pinned on in trying to make it a 23rd win for a British driver. It

:29:03.:29:07.

was him that did it last in 2008. He hasn't had that opportunity, last

:29:08.:29:11.

year he was in position but the tyre failure which caused his retirement

:29:12.:29:14.

also went on to affect a few other drivers. We did have a comment, a

:29:15.:29:21.

question coming in about the kerbs, whether that was contributory in the

:29:22.:29:24.

end to the tyre failures we saw last year. I did see the main man from

:29:25.:29:29.

the MSA who does the circuit inspections yesterday and I asked

:29:30.:29:32.

that question had there been any changes to the kerbs here at

:29:33.:29:36.

Silverstone? He said, no, there was no need to. It proved to be very

:29:37.:29:43.

much a tyre problem. We saw it and they changed things after last

:29:44.:29:45.

year's British Grand Prix. There were a number of issues. Things like

:29:46.:29:57.

casters, all sorts of things, and Derek was dismissive of the idea

:29:58.:30:00.

that it was Silverstone's kerbs to blame. Yes, that's right. There

:30:01.:30:05.

hasn't been too much change there. Everybody is expecting there to be

:30:06.:30:10.

no problem. We have seen few tyre problems this year. This track does

:30:11.:30:13.

generate more force than any other we are expecting it to be

:30:14.:30:16.

straightforward. The boss at Ferrari now.

:30:17.:30:20.

We will be hearing from him over the course of this weekend. Eddie Jordan

:30:21.:30:25.

has had a interview with him which I am looking forward to. We don't know

:30:26.:30:30.

much about him. He has kept private so far. They have brought in

:30:31.:30:52.

somebody from outside the Formula One environment to do a management

:30:53.:31:12.

job, to look at the strengths and weaknesses and rejuvenate the team.

:31:13.:31:19.

It is far too early to make any judgements. We will have to see what

:31:20.:31:23.

he comes up with. A bit of talk yesterday from Kimi Raikkonen. He

:31:24.:31:30.

made a comment that he may well not be around after the end of next

:31:31.:31:34.

year. What your thoughts on that? Will he still be there next year?

:31:35.:31:35.

They need more from him. Fernando Alonso gets everything out of the

:31:36.:31:36.

car, and Kimi Raikkonen has been some distance away from him. You

:31:37.:31:37.

wonder about his motivation. Romain Grosjean is looking to move on, you

:31:38.:31:39.

do wonder about Kimi Raikkonen's position. Romain Grosjean was asked,

:31:40.:31:41.

would you be happy to go with Fernando Alonso again? Romain

:31:42.:31:49.

Grosjean left Formula One, only to return, but he said he would have no

:31:50.:31:57.

problem. He said, the last time I was against Fernando, I was very

:31:58.:32:01.

young, and today would be different. He got on well with him. It was a

:32:02.:32:08.

fairly good sales pitch! Romain Grosjean very keen to try to move

:32:09.:32:12.

into a potential race winning car again. He scored very well in the

:32:13.:32:16.

latter part of last year. again. He scored very well in the

:32:17.:32:18.

latter part Look at Fernando Alonso! No change in that time, he

:32:19.:32:29.

remains in third place. Always on the limit, Fernando Alonso. Romain

:32:30.:32:35.

Grosjean looking to get into a car that can give him back some podium

:32:36.:32:40.

finishes, after being such a high scorer last season. We are not

:32:41.:32:46.

seeing any improvement, so the order is pretty much established. Mercedes

:32:47.:32:49.

first and second, Ferrari and Red is pretty much established. Mercedes

:32:50.:32:53.

first and second, Ferrari Bull next, with Fernando Alonso and Daniel

:32:54.:32:57.

Ricciardo. Not much to choose between them. Sergio Perez is just

:32:58.:33:04.

outside the top ten. Jules Bianchi is the fastest of the

:33:05.:33:27.

backmarkers. RADIO: Just get enough of a gap for your final lap. Susie

:33:28.:33:34.

Wolff bringing up the rear in terms of times, after the problems with

:33:35.:33:39.

her car, she could not put in a representative number of laps.

:33:40.:33:44.

It has been a difficult day for Williams, Felipe Massa hitting the

:33:45.:33:49.

wall and Susie Wolff having to stop on track after four laps. Nico

:33:50.:33:54.

Rosberg is at the top of the timesheets. We are coming off

:33:55.:33:57.

there, but we will be back for the second free press this on the red

:33:58.:34:01.

button at 1:55pm, see you then.
