Hello and welcome to Silverstone, the sun is starting to break through

:01:03.:01:09.

and the fans are out in force ready for practice two. This morning it

:01:10.:01:14.

was Nico Rosberg who was fasters but the focus was on Williams. Susie

:01:15.:01:23.

Wolff was the first woman in 22 years to drive a Formula One car,

:01:24.:01:27.

but there was a problem after four laps. Disappointing for her. Felipe

:01:28.:01:34.

Massa was half on turf and the kerb and his car hit the kerb hard. A lot

:01:35.:01:38.

of damage. He wasn't sure if the car would be out in time for practice

:01:39.:01:44.

two. Tom, you are down at Williams, what's the latest? Bad news, the

:01:45.:01:49.

mechanics are still working to get the car ready. He damaged all four

:01:50.:01:54.

corners. When they got the car back to the pit garage they discovered it

:01:55.:01:57.

needed a new power unit, as well. They've been flat out. Better news

:01:58.:02:07.

on Valteri, he is ready to go. The first bit of data the team has

:02:08.:02:11.

managed to get all day. The other cars, the Caterham of Ericsson,

:02:12.:02:15.

didn't manage to get too many laps in, he had a bit of a spin. He is

:02:16.:02:21.

ready to go. And Maldonado, the unlucky 13 driver has already had

:02:22.:02:25.

four race retirements so far this season and couldn't get more than

:02:26.:02:29.

two laps this morning. Hoping to get more information this afternoon.

:02:30.:02:33.

Certainly. It's been disappointing for Williams after that fantastic

:02:34.:02:43.

qualifying last time out and Bottas getting a podium.

:02:44.:02:45.

It's Mercedes all the way. This afternoon will be about trig to

:02:46.:03:12.

get as much data for Williams. For all the team trying to work out long

:03:13.:03:16.

run pace it's going to be a busy afternoon. James and Alan are in the

:03:17.:03:23.

commentary box. A a British Grand Prix, sun shining, crowds are there.

:03:24.:03:26.

It's a fantastic atmosphere. A lot of inspection, as well. Lewis

:03:27.:03:30.

Hamilton comes in to this particular race with a lot to pre-to get back

:03:31.:03:35.

in the championship. He has a confidence about him. Wasn't

:03:36.:03:38.

quickest this morning but was held up on both laps he was going for,

:03:39.:03:43.

behind Nico Rosberg. The British crowd who are definitely packing the

:03:44.:03:47.

grandstands have a good expectation of a potential British victory.

:03:48.:03:52.

Certainly is. Looking back at what happened this morning. Nico Rosberg

:03:53.:04:02.

seven 10ths of a second faster than his team-mate. Jenson Button has

:04:03.:04:08.

that special pink crash helmet he is wearing this weekend, remembering

:04:09.:04:14.

his father. Jenson Button is still grieving very much. This weekend, as

:04:15.:04:17.

in Melbourne, a big focus on his father. Obviously, he is struggling

:04:18.:04:21.

to move on really from that. We will see how the weekend pans out. A lot

:04:22.:04:25.

of support, I think, for him over the course of the weekend, as there

:04:26.:04:30.

will be for Max Chiltern. Here is Max's radio. About the same as where

:04:31.:04:34.

it was in the morning. It is clear. The temp will probably come up

:04:35.:04:39.

during the session. Wind is still gusting, a head wind on 14-15 but

:04:40.:04:45.

it's guing and moving around. -- gusting and moving around. That's

:04:46.:04:49.

Max Chiltern there. The team being told the wind is quite strong. It's

:04:50.:04:55.

9. 7 metres per second. It's a tail wind as they go past us under our

:04:56.:05:00.

window. We are above the pit strait. We are looking down to the Caterham

:05:01.:05:04.

timing stand on the pit wall. You can see the flags celebrating,

:05:05.:05:11.

Brazilian flags and Scottish flags, they're blowing strongly in the

:05:12.:05:15.

breeze. It's gusty. This used to be a World War II airfield and they

:05:16.:05:19.

don't build airfield places where there isn't any wind. It's

:05:20.:05:23.

unstabilising, destabilising for a car. It certainly is. There is a lot

:05:24.:05:27.

of buildings now and in and around the area and with it pushing you

:05:28.:05:31.

down the start of the finish strait, when you turn in to turn one you

:05:32.:05:34.

have a change of balance in the middle of the corner where the wind

:05:35.:05:38.

is blocked by the new pit building. On the other side into Copse, which

:05:39.:05:43.

is extremely fast right-hander you suddenly get the wind hitting the

:05:44.:05:47.

front of the car as you come through the apex of the corner which sends

:05:48.:05:50.

the front into a push, an understeer and the rear can become destabilised

:05:51.:05:55.

afterwards. But that's one of the standard features of Silverstone,

:05:56.:05:58.

the drivers have to get used to it and look around, look for the flags,

:05:59.:06:03.

see which way the wind is blowing. Is it a car characteristic or the

:06:04.:06:09.

wind? Just get on with it. The pit lane is open for the 90 minutes of

:06:10.:06:16.

practice. Sun is shining, the track temperature is 38C. The tyres will

:06:17.:06:20.

be close to the ideal operating window. Down in the Red Bull garage

:06:21.:06:23.

is Tom Clarkson. Yeah, not good news for Sebastian

:06:24.:06:29.

Vettel. The mechanics were preparing his car and they've had a brake

:06:30.:06:37.

bleed problem. They're working away. Sebastian Vettel came in a moment

:06:38.:06:45.

ago, he talked to the mink. Christian said -- with the

:06:46.:06:58.

mechanics. Times like this, as down at the

:06:59.:07:01.

Williams garage at the moment working very hard to repair that car

:07:02.:07:06.

of Felipe Massa after that big accident he suffered. Yeah, the

:07:07.:07:11.

mechanics are artists in their own way. As a driver you feel the

:07:12.:07:17.

smallest details and differences between the car. We heard this

:07:18.:07:21.

morning with one or two drivers complaining about the steering, and

:07:22.:07:26.

tiny millimetre details. It all has to be perfect. When it's perfect you

:07:27.:07:32.

get a situation like Nico Rosberg and Mercedes. We saw Lewis Hamilton

:07:33.:07:37.

there in the background with the Mercedes, streamliner car as it was

:07:38.:07:41.

known because the wheels were covered up. Even back in the 1950s,

:07:42.:07:46.

that was a 1954 car, they were across the idea of aerodynamics even

:07:47.:07:50.

though down force hadn't been considered at that point. That car,

:07:51.:07:53.

I understand, is the car which exactly 40 years ago to the day won

:07:54.:07:59.

the French Grand Prix. So a real piece of history. Talking - 60

:08:00.:08:10.

years, I beg my pardon. I was saying you don't want to drop

:08:11.:08:16.

a spanner on that. It's a working environment in that garage. That car

:08:17.:08:22.

conservatively worth 20 million, maybe more. It's a bit of history.

:08:23.:08:27.

We are here at the present and the latest, greatest of the technologies

:08:28.:08:33.

as we see Bottas, now getting first laps on circuit. He gave his car to

:08:34.:08:40.

Susie Wolff this morning and obviously quite anxious when he saw

:08:41.:08:43.

it stopping at the side of the road. Now he is out on track getting a

:08:44.:08:47.

first feel for Silverstone and these conditions. Williams have had a good

:08:48.:08:52.

run of form recently with Felipe Massa being on pole in the last

:08:53.:09:00.

Grand Prix in Austria. Bottas with a podium finish. They're on good form.

:09:01.:09:04.

That's what makes Susie's run equally unusual, not just the first

:09:05.:09:08.

time a woman has driven a frm la one car in an official session for 22

:09:09.:09:16.

years -- Formula One car. To be given a chance to go out in a

:09:17.:09:20.

front-running car is unusual, it's a shame for Susie she managed to do

:09:21.:09:24.

four laps before there was an oil pressure problem. This is that same

:09:25.:09:33.

car. Now Bottas is driving for the Williams team. He was happy to give

:09:34.:09:38.

his car up this morning, relatively speak, I guess, but she will have

:09:39.:09:41.

another chance at the next Grand Prix in Germany in two weeks' time.

:09:42.:09:47.

First real experience of this Silverstone track this year for

:09:48.:09:52.

Bottas. The wind has dropped down a little bit. But still gusty by

:09:53.:09:56.

Formula One standards. That's a strong breeze. We don't normally go

:09:57.:09:59.

many places where the wind is stronger than that. It's the gusts

:10:00.:10:03.

that affect the car balance more than anything else. It's

:10:04.:10:06.

inconsistent, one lap it can be worse than the next and you are

:10:07.:10:09.

trying to predict it all the time. We are on board there with Bottas.

:10:10.:10:28.

He will build up to speed. Lap two and three will be the ones where he

:10:29.:10:32.

will start to feel it. A lot of work to do for the Williams team, they

:10:33.:10:38.

managed 11 laps in total of which meaningful laps were short. A lot of

:10:39.:10:43.

work to do if you compare it with Rosberg and Hamilton.

:10:44.:10:56.

Hot air comes through from the engine that comes to the cockpit and

:10:57.:11:03.

heats up the driver's side. If one of the seals is not exactly perfect

:11:04.:11:07.

then it can let that hot air bleed into the driver. Rosberg and

:11:08.:11:12.

Hamilton did combine 47 laps this morning. That's what you call

:11:13.:11:16.

gathering homework. Williams have a lot of catching up to do. Jenson

:11:17.:11:20.

Button in the McLaren crosses the line to go fastest for the moment

:11:21.:11:24.

with an hour and 23 minutes of this session remaining. It's Button.

:11:25.:11:33.

Fastest time this morning Rosberg. Hamilton didn't really get a clear

:11:34.:11:43.

run at it, so he was seven 10ths of a second behind.

:11:44.:11:56.

The problems don't seem to be going away for the Sauber team. It's not a

:11:57.:12:03.

vintage season for them. I spoke to Adrian this morning and standard

:12:04.:12:06.

practice, they're scrabbling for grip. The car's understeering, the

:12:07.:12:11.

front doesn't work and the rear on the throttle snaps. That corner

:12:12.:12:14.

where we saw, it's a standard situation around there where you are

:12:15.:12:17.

always fighting both ends of the car. The understeer in the middle

:12:18.:12:22.

and the rear end coming out. It just looks difficult and inconsistent and

:12:23.:12:24.

that's been from the first time we saw it in Australia to now. It's

:12:25.:12:28.

interesting, there in the -- they're in the same position after eight

:12:29.:12:32.

races that Williams were in last year, they got no points on the

:12:33.:12:35.

board. Then if you look at the turnaround this year for Williams,

:12:36.:12:39.

the Mercedes power unit is clearly a big part of the story, but Force

:12:40.:12:44.

India and McLaren have the same engine and McLaren are well behind

:12:45.:12:47.

Williams in the standings. Williams have 85 points. Compared to zero

:12:48.:12:52.

last year. It shows it can be done. If you look at just how motor racing

:12:53.:12:56.

is, two weeks ago Williams had their best weekend for a long time ap then

:12:57.:13:01.

suddenly we are looking at the end of practice and one car was in the

:13:02.:13:04.

wall and the other in the pits. When you think you are up, suddenly you

:13:05.:13:08.

get a wakening and you are back down again.

:13:09.:13:11.

So just up to speed on other talking points from the morning session,

:13:12.:13:15.

Maldonado didn't do very much mileage, no laps at all. He has work

:13:16.:13:20.

to do. Technical problems once again for the Venezuelan driver. We heard

:13:21.:13:24.

earlier that Vettel has a problem with the brake bleeds. He is having

:13:25.:13:29.

some work done on his car. His team-mate Ricciardo was fourth

:13:30.:13:32.

fastest this morning in the Red Bull but he had his run cut short by a

:13:33.:13:38.

gear box niggle. Red Bull obviously not having the clearest of runs

:13:39.:13:43.

reliability-wise. Vettel was unable to finish the last Grand Prix in

:13:44.:13:48.

Austria after a problem with the electronic control unit that

:13:49.:13:51.

required him to park the car by the side of the race track for 60

:13:52.:13:55.

seconds to reset. It's the only way that he could get the thing reset

:13:56.:13:58.

and eventually he was forced to retire the car anyway. Jenson Button

:13:59.:14:10.

is struggling a little bit for he accelerates down the hangar

:14:11.:14:15.

straight. It is just a wind affected situation. He got into the apex and

:14:16.:14:19.

suddenly front of the car washed out. Jenson Button getting up to

:14:20.:14:25.

speed with the car. It is quite warm today. The track temperature is 38

:14:26.:14:30.

degrees and that will help their car, they tend to struggle to get

:14:31.:14:35.

the front tyres up to temperature. It is looking as if it is working

:14:36.:14:40.

right now. It is two seconds away from Nico Rosberg.

:14:41.:14:45.

RADIO: We have too much traffic. We have an option to let all of these

:14:46.:14:53.

guys through. Sergio Perez of Force India, he is in a gaggle of cars

:14:54.:14:59.

with Maldonado, Chilton and Bianchi circulating together. They are

:15:00.:15:01.

asking them to let them through or find some clear space. We have quite

:15:02.:15:09.

a few cars on track at the moment, it is 16 of the total 22. Vettel and

:15:10.:15:16.

Ricciardo are in the pits. Rosberg and Hamilton have gone on track for

:15:17.:15:21.

the first time. Felipe Massa is having his car rebid. I am loving

:15:22.:15:29.

looking out of the commentary box window and I can see four

:15:30.:15:34.

grandstands from left to right. This is like race day at a lot of other

:15:35.:15:38.

venues and it is Friday for practice.

:15:39.:15:43.

RADIO: I think the wind is affecting a lot. If you have an understeering

:15:44.:15:53.

balance, the wind will push it in that direction. If it is an over

:15:54.:15:59.

steer, it makes it more so. Force India are a team that doesn't

:16:00.:16:03.

necessarily have a heck of a lot of downforce. They are bit on the edge

:16:04.:16:07.

down here in the high downforce setup. It makes it incredibly

:16:08.:16:13.

tricky. One team we have seen going better is Ferrari. This circuit will

:16:14.:16:18.

suit them. They should be quite strong around here. I would expect

:16:19.:16:22.

them and Red Bull to be not necessarily fighting for the

:16:23.:16:26.

ultimate victory, but to be somewhere near there. Valtteri

:16:27.:16:30.

Bottas goes quickest at this moment. Williams may be not able to repeat

:16:31.:16:37.

the performance they had in Austria. Everyone running the harder Pirelli

:16:38.:16:42.

compound, it is medium and hard, the hardest of the range that

:16:43.:16:44.
