Whether it's because it's slightly hotter

Whether it's because it's slightly all day. Encouraging for the

McLaren. It's all day. Encouraging for the

medium tyre. Clearly Red Bull feel there's

medium tyre. Clearly Red Bull feel behind the two Mercedes cars. As we

:00:58.:00:58.

suspected, it's Hamilton and Rosberg at

here at Silverstone. The crowd here would love it if

:00:59.:00:58.

here at Silverstone. The crowd here the time sheets despite the fact

:00:59.:01:18.

the British Grand Prix. Not long until free practice three and not

:01:19.:01:27.

long until qualifying. Yesterday morning in the dry it was Nico

:01:28.:01:31.

Rosberg who was fastest and in the afternoon it was Lewis Hamilton,

:01:32.:01:34.

despite the fact that his Mercedes had an oil pressure problem and

:01:35.:01:38.

stopped out on track on the losing invaluable track time and data. He

:01:39.:01:43.

missed about a third of the session which is crucial at this stage of

:01:44.:01:47.

the weekend. Lewis Hamilton got pole position last year, Nico Rosberg won

:01:48.:01:49.

the race. In the pit lane we have Tom

:01:50.:02:26.

Clarkson, what is the weather looking like? We haven't had any

:02:27.:02:32.

rain in the pit lane for about an hour, there is a nice strong wind of

:02:33.:02:39.

four metres per second drying big -- the track. The teams will have to be

:02:40.:02:43.

very careful how they use the intermediate tyres because they only

:02:44.:02:47.

have four for the whole weekend. The weather being so unpredictable, they

:02:48.:02:51.

might need some of those during qualifying. There is a 60% chance of

:02:52.:02:57.

rain during this session. The clouds look pretty dark. One of us two will

:02:58.:03:04.

get caught out, I have gone for the dry spec I hope it will stay dry but

:03:05.:03:10.

it looks unlikely. You have to feel sorry for the thousands of people

:03:11.:03:17.

whose -- who spent the night camping. Jenson Button is just

:03:18.:03:22.

getting in his car, McLaren have gone from being number one in the

:03:23.:03:25.

constructors after the first race to being in sixth place now. They will

:03:26.:03:31.

be hoping for better this weekend. You can probably make out Jenson

:03:32.:03:33.

Button's helmet which he will be wearing as a mark of respect to his

:03:34.:03:37.

father who passed away will stop they are hoping to turn the

:03:38.:03:48.

grandstands think. -- pink. I have gone for the pessimistic wet weather

:03:49.:03:54.

setup. You can get involved in this session through social media come on

:03:55.:03:57.

the details are below. The commentators will try to read

:03:58.:04:06.

out as many comments as they can. It could be quite a busy session. Let's

:04:07.:04:12.

hope so. We're looking forward to some action, it is only a 60 minute

:04:13.:04:17.

session. This rebuilds us towards qualifying. It is important, as much

:04:18.:04:24.

as they have to think about their tyre allocation, they have to get

:04:25.:04:29.

used to be circuit. It is wet, yesterday was completely dry,

:04:30.:04:32.

suggestions are it will be at least for qualifying. Predictions for

:04:33.:04:36.

tomorrow are a bit sketchy. Lewis Hamilton has been enjoying looking

:04:37.:04:41.

around this Mercedes car in the Mercedes garage this week and,

:04:42.:04:44.

somewhat ever on to be Formula One car he will be competing in this

:04:45.:04:49.

weekend. Mercedes had a notable victory in the British Grand Prix in

:04:50.:04:53.

1955 when it was at Aintree, although they missed out in 1954.

:04:54.:04:59.

They had a win here last year thanks to Nico Rosberg. It was a victory

:05:00.:05:05.

that Rosberg rather inherited. Not only did Lewis Hamilton have a tyre

:05:06.:05:08.

failure, Sebastian Vettel was leading the Grand Prix and he

:05:09.:05:13.

suffered a rare gearbox failure. This year, Sebastian Vettel has been

:05:14.:05:21.

less lucky with his reliability. Generally he has not had perfect

:05:22.:05:26.

reliability. It has hit him in races this year. The car has not had the

:05:27.:05:32.

pure speed to win races when it has been clean for him. It has been a

:05:33.:05:36.

tough time. Daniel Ricciardo, his new team-mates, seems to be

:05:37.:05:42.

revelling in the setup at Red Bull but also in the way the cars are

:05:43.:05:46.

running behind Brit systems. He has put the pressure on Sebastian Vettel

:05:47.:05:54.

-- running the hybrid systems. It will be interesting to see this

:05:55.:05:58.

weekend, Vettel has had a couple of pole positions in the past, he has

:05:59.:06:02.

been outqualified by Daniel Ricciardo on a number of occasions

:06:03.:06:05.

this year. We will wait to find out what happens.

:06:06.:06:10.

Quite a lot of damp areas around the circuit. We had AGP qualifying

:06:11.:06:17.

session this morning and they took the worst of the puddles of the

:06:18.:06:22.

track -- we had a GP3 qualifying session. There is a bit of work on

:06:23.:06:31.

the right-hand front brake area. He had a huge shunt yesterday in

:06:32.:06:36.

practice, took all four corners of the car, right at the beginning of

:06:37.:06:40.

the session. They are a bit late in getting the break shrouding --

:06:41.:06:46.

brake. There are not so many puddles any longer, it is purely

:06:47.:06:50.

intermediate weather. This circuit is quite greasy, you can see the

:06:51.:06:59.

lighter sections. Until the cask go with a bit of speed and the down

:07:00.:07:06.

first -- the cars go with them speed and

:07:07.:07:14.

there are some dry patches, says Jenson Button. He is feeding that

:07:15.:07:19.

back to be team because they don't want to tear up these intermediate

:07:20.:07:26.

tyres too much. The green indicates it is the intermediate tyre. If he

:07:27.:07:29.

stays out there it will do a bit more. In a few places there is some

:07:30.:07:35.

spray being picked up. You can see how slippery and sliding it is as he

:07:36.:07:39.

tries to get on the power out of club corner. It is normally a

:07:40.:07:47.

flat-out right-hander but it is in fifth year as he accelerates and

:07:48.:07:51.

gently comes through, raking in to turn three. This is the slowest

:07:52.:07:56.

corner of the circuit. In the dry you would want to hit the apex but

:07:57.:08:00.

he hasn't got the front group to get near it on this lap. One of the

:08:01.:08:05.

problems McLaren have had is generating the tyre temperature.

:08:06.:08:11.

Jenson is very smooth, it has its benefits but in these intermediate

:08:12.:08:14.

and greasy conditions, it is probably not his ideal scenario. In

:08:15.:08:19.

the dry this weekend we have the harder compounds of tyre that

:08:20.:08:24.

Pirelli bring. McLaren was saying yesterday that their challenge is

:08:25.:08:29.

indeed getting those hard temperatures in the heart tyre. That

:08:30.:08:34.

has been their problem so far. Let's quickly remind you of the fastest

:08:35.:08:40.

times from yesterday. Lewis Hamilton set the pace, despite the problem

:08:41.:08:50.

that denied him a full race run. Nico Rosberg was second fastest,

:08:51.:08:57.

Alonso for Ferrari was third. Always difficult to know if the Friday pace

:08:58.:09:00.

will be converted into qualifying pace. Then the Red Bulls were next

:09:01.:09:09.

up. This track perhaps isn't quite as beneficial as it was in Austria

:09:10.:09:15.

because Bottas was sixth fastest. Massa was 11th fastest. They had a

:09:16.:09:21.

very difficult day as Jenson Button is trying to get off the drying

:09:22.:09:26.

racing line to cool his intermediate tyres. I presume he will head back

:09:27.:09:35.

towards the pits and sit and wait. Williams have lifted their game,

:09:36.:09:43.

they will be better but they will not be as good as in Austria. Just

:09:44.:09:50.

watching the Ferrari come out of the pits? Alonso, Raikkonen and Rosberg

:09:51.:09:55.

are heading out on to track and they have gone with the full wet tyres. A

:09:56.:10:05.

real mixture down here. They have an extra allocation of three full wet

:10:06.:10:09.

tyres and four of the intermediates. The intermediate is the tyre they

:10:10.:10:14.

would most likely use this afternoon if it is damp and wet for

:10:15.:10:19.

qualifying, and also for tomorrow. It is better to burn up a full wet,

:10:20.:10:24.

extreme wet, than an intermediate, that is probably the reason. We are

:10:25.:10:31.

seeing the likes of Sutil out on the full wet, Bianchi, Chilton and hot

:10:32.:10:37.

as as well. Vettel has gone on the intermediate -- Chilton and Bottas.

:10:38.:10:45.

Williams had a reasonable run yesterday apart from their problems.

:10:46.:10:50.

The first session denied them very many laps at all, a decent pace in

:10:51.:10:55.

the afternoon. McLaren were next up, seventh and eighth fastest. Kimi

:10:56.:11:00.

Raikkonen was a little way off his team-mate comedy was ninth fastest.

:11:01.:11:18.

--, team-mate, he was ninth fastest. Toro Rosso could be a team to keep

:11:19.:11:23.

an eye on this weekend to get into the points, they look pretty good.

:11:24.:11:28.

They were good last year as well. That was the point when a Red Bull

:11:29.:11:40.

engineer said one of the Toro Rosso drivers would step into the vacant

:11:41.:11:49.

Red Bull seed. The gaggle in the middle of the top ten will be hotly

:11:50.:11:54.

contested. Kimi Raikkonen had a tough time trying to get the car

:11:55.:11:58.

balance to his liking. He was happy in the morning but not in the

:11:59.:12:03.

afternoon. Much more tread visible on the full wet tyre. Trying to pick

:12:04.:12:09.

up some water to cool those wet tyres as he goes down the start

:12:10.:12:12.

finish straight and through Copse Corner. And into Becketts. This is

:12:13.:12:19.

where you lose edge and is amount of speed in comparison to the drive.

:12:20.:12:23.

This is normally one of the fastest and best sections of circuit in the

:12:24.:12:28.

world, I think. As you flick it right, left, Right and left and down

:12:29.:12:34.

towards Hangar Straight, now down towards Stowe and the last couple of

:12:35.:12:39.

corners. It is the corner where Felipe Massa had his accident

:12:40.:12:43.

yesterday and Daniil Kvyat nearly repeated it. He stays off the kerb,

:12:44.:12:50.

headed into the pits. Add a quick conversation with Kimi Raikkonen

:12:51.:12:56.

manager this morning, talking about his time at Ferrari. He was saying,

:12:57.:13:01.

that team is very much centred around Fernando Alonso. They have

:13:02.:13:06.

very different driving styles, Fernando Alonso likes the rear of

:13:07.:13:09.

the car to be planted and he works with the front end. Kimi Raikkonen

:13:10.:13:14.

likes a responsive front end. It is a missed a polar opposite in terms

:13:15.:13:18.

of what they are looking for from the car -- almost a polar opposite.

:13:19.:13:23.

Kimi Raikkonen came into Ferrari, Fernando Alonso's team, he has

:13:24.:13:28.

moulded the development for such a long period of time. Felipe Massa's

:13:29.:13:34.

driving style was similar. He has a unique situation where he will throw

:13:35.:13:38.

the front of the car in, really throw it in, and then come back on

:13:39.:13:44.

the steering to find the grip angle. Kimi Raikkonen has certainly

:13:45.:13:48.

struggled and not produced the performances I expected from him or

:13:49.:13:54.

Ferrari. It has been disappointing so far, we will see how he gets on.

:13:55.:13:59.

Will he be able to produce anything like that? A great run of podium

:14:00.:14:06.

finishes in the mid-2000s. We will have to see what happens. Ferrari

:14:07.:14:10.

did find a problem with Raikkonen's cap, that is interesting. He was

:14:11.:14:15.

complaining that it something is not quite right -- Raikkonen's car. We

:14:16.:14:21.

have had confirmation they found something specific, they are not

:14:22.:14:28.

telling us exactly what. If you want to keep in touch with the

:14:29.:14:31.

behind-the-scenes stories, you can go to the BBC F1 website, there is a

:14:32.:14:37.

live text service as well. Thank you for your comments. This one says,

:14:38.:14:43.

good morning, what effect would Lewis Hamilton's failure yesterday

:14:44.:14:48.

have on his race? He missed out on his similar to race run. --

:14:49.:14:56.

simulated. It will have an effect because it is laps he missed in

:14:57.:15:01.

comparison to Nico Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton did 14, Rosberg did 35. It

:15:02.:15:07.

was the long run laps, he had Audie done his short performance run and

:15:08.:15:10.

they were just arty -- he had already done. And they were just

:15:11.:15:17.

starting. The team will understand it but Lewis Hamilton will miss a

:15:18.:15:22.

bit of a field. The fact that the conditions are completely different,

:15:23.:15:25.

and possibly tomorrow, brings it back onto a level keel again.

:15:26.:15:29.

However, you want to be out on the circuit and doing the laps. You

:15:30.:15:33.

don't want your team-mate necessarily to lose it but you would

:15:34.:15:38.

want your car to be the reliable one. The wind has dropped in

:15:39.:15:45.

strength considerably. It was gusty yesterday. We saw a lot of drivers

:15:46.:15:48.

talked about it after the session, about how it was blowing the car,

:15:49.:15:52.

some corners it made the car grip too quickly into turns and other

:15:53.:15:55.

corners it was making it understeer or run wide. It's a big factor here,

:15:56.:16:01.

it's an airfield circuit. Lewis Hamilton comes out of the pit lane.

:16:02.:16:10.

You have got such an open airfield, big grandstands now, also two pit

:16:11.:16:13.

buildings, one here where we are sitting right now and one, the old

:16:14.:16:16.

one on the other side of the circuit, and when you pop out behind

:16:17.:16:19.

those buildings suddenly this gust of wind hits you and if it hits the

:16:20.:16:24.

front or rear of the car first it affects the balance aspect. It's

:16:25.:16:29.

inconsistent. Yesterday it was -- yesterday it was gusting and it was

:16:30.:16:33.

difficult to predict what was a track condition and car balance and

:16:34.:16:37.

what was just wind. Daniel Ricciardo looking very chilled at the moment

:16:38.:16:40.

as he prepares to come out on circuit. The winner of the Canadian

:16:41.:16:44.

Grand Prix, the only man to have won a race apart from the two Mercedes

:16:45.:16:49.

drivers so far this year. That was quite a surprise to everybody

:16:50.:16:52.

concerned but of course Mercedes had their problems there. Ericsson going

:16:53.:16:57.

out on circuit for Caterham. Nobody's established a lap time as

:16:58.:16:59.

such. They had a good run here last year.

:17:00.:17:09.

Daniel Ricciardo got their best ever results at Silverstone

:17:10.:17:12.

place finish last year and qualified in 5th. Fernando Alonso looking

:17:13.:17:16.

somewhat thoughtful at this stage of proceedings. Still under 50 minutes

:17:17.:17:21.

to go in this final practice session leading to qualifying. Three times a

:17:22.:17:27.

pole-sitter himself at this circuit, and has had a couple of wins go his

:17:28.:17:32.

way, as well. We will get more data on this.

:17:33.:17:37.

Cancel the magic, that's a setting presumably on the steering wheel,

:17:38.:17:41.

but it sounds quite fun! Sounds excellent, if you ask me. They

:17:42.:17:48.

should all have settings, instead of L3, Hammer Time is what they said to

:17:49.:17:55.

him in Austrian. There is no question they understand and ne that

:17:56.:17:59.

we are listening and working out what's going on and they also the

:18:00.:18:04.

other teams, as well, they don't want to show their hand too much.

:18:05.:18:08.

Lewis Hamilton doing another standing start, using the

:18:09.:18:11.

opportunity when track conditions aren't in perfect place to do some

:18:12.:18:15.

running, just to get some of this basic work done to ensure, as he is

:18:16.:18:20.

sitting there, the clutch is doing a biting point, his hands aren't even

:18:21.:18:24.

on the wheel, he will pull the two paddals on the bottom, activate the

:18:25.:18:28.

procedure and then accelerate out, give more data to the team so that

:18:29.:18:32.

they understand what he needs and what the clutch needs for the start.

:18:33.:18:38.

The only two cars on track are the two Caterhams, I think. Tom, I think

:18:39.:18:43.

you are at McLaren. I am and I am outside McLaren. Bad news for me and

:18:44.:18:47.

my shirt, it's starting to rain again. The track conditions are

:18:48.:18:51.

going to get worse. Jenson Button is now out of his car. He has been

:18:52.:18:56.

having a chat with his race engineer. The word from McLaren is

:18:57.:19:00.

that they think there is no point wasting the tyres, both Jenson

:19:01.:19:11.

Button and Kevin Magnussen have... If you look at the front brake

:19:12.:19:14.

ducts, it gives you a glue on the conditions. You see that McLaren

:19:15.:19:19.

have taped over those front ducts to try and help retain some temperature

:19:20.:19:23.

in the front brakes. There's little braking here, particularly in the

:19:24.:19:29.

middle sector from Copse through to Stowe. Interesting how they're

:19:30.:19:35.

having to go to slightly basic measures of taping up the front

:19:36.:19:39.

brake ducts. It's a quick and easy way of adjustment. They had those on

:19:40.:19:46.

yesterday even in the dry. Once the brakes are hot, that also feeds back

:19:47.:19:51.

to the tyre and works the front tyre a little better. So it's not just

:19:52.:19:55.

necessarily just working the brake, it's also working the tyre. A bit of

:19:56.:20:01.

rain might not necessarily be good for you, Tom, but it's going to be

:20:02.:20:05.

good for us, it will give hopefully a clear indication that the circuit

:20:06.:20:08.

is going to be wet and we will get more cars out on track. A few

:20:09.:20:12.

comments coming in about the change in weather conditions here today.

:20:13.:20:16.

Nathan asking, if the rain falls for the race and the forecast for

:20:17.:20:20.

tomorrow might be the odd shower around, so it isn't impossible, if

:20:21.:20:23.

the rain falls for the race who might perform the best in your

:20:24.:20:27.

opinion? This is a change of circuit anyway in comparison to what we have

:20:28.:20:32.

had in the last two in Canada and Austria which were very much slow

:20:33.:20:36.

corners, big long straits. Around here it's all very high speed

:20:37.:20:40.

corners. The average corner speed is significantly higher than it was in

:20:41.:20:44.

Austria. I would expect that Red Bull will be strong around here

:20:45.:20:47.

anyway. In the dry I think Ferrari will be good. Maybe a little bit

:20:48.:20:54.

less so in the wet. Alonso will probably... Toro Rosso you can never

:20:55.:20:58.

discount. But ultimately, you are going to see it's Mercedes at the

:20:59.:21:01.

front. In the pit lane, Jenny, you are at

:21:02.:21:11.

Force India, they had a tough day yesterday. 16th and 17th. What are

:21:12.:21:16.

they telling you today? They did have a tough day. Hulkenberg was

:21:17.:21:21.

adamant at the end of the session they need to do better. He is in his

:21:22.:21:25.

car waiting to go out. Like Tom said, the brake ducts are taped up

:21:26.:21:30.

almost. A tiny slot on those. Just at the back of the garage you can

:21:31.:21:34.

see Sergio Perez stood there meeting some of the guests, partners of

:21:35.:21:39.

Force India. But he had a tough day, as well. He was asked comments and

:21:40.:21:43.

thoughts about maybe being a team-mate of Susie Wolff and he sort

:21:44.:21:49.

of said something along the lines of, it would be terrible to be

:21:50.:21:53.

beaten by a girl. Then very flippantly said, well, you know,

:21:54.:21:57.

they're best in the kippen anyway. -- kitchen. The media in Mexico

:21:58.:22:04.

picked up on this and went crazy. He has received a lot of flak and the

:22:05.:22:09.

team are trying to manage it. Susie came out in support and has taken to

:22:10.:22:13.

Twitter saying his comments were taken out of context. As my family

:22:14.:22:17.

will tell you, I drive better than I cook. She's obviously in the taking

:22:18.:22:21.

it to heart too much. But it has kicked up a little bit of fuss.

:22:22.:22:26.

Sergio Perez seems to be putting his small racing boot into his mouth a

:22:27.:22:29.

couple of times too many this season. Right, hopefully he can

:22:30.:22:33.

focus on the driving here today. Seeing some of the cars getting a

:22:34.:22:36.

little bit out of shape. It looks as though there is a touch more rain in

:22:37.:22:40.

the air now than at the very beginning of this session. It's

:22:41.:22:43.

going to be a tough one to learn much. What it also means is that

:22:44.:22:47.

Lewis Hamilton isn't going to get that kind of race run that he hoped

:22:48.:22:52.

to plan for this morning. They had talked about changing their run plan

:22:53.:22:55.

in order to make up for that time he lost yesterday. Clearly he is not

:22:56.:22:58.

going to be able to do that and he has done three lapse but they've all

:22:59.:23:03.

been installation laps so far and hasn't completed a flying lap. The

:23:04.:23:19.

two cars that have done that are Ericsson and Kobay -- Kobayashi.

:23:20.:23:28.

A big slide there for Kvyat a second ago. He looks impressive in these

:23:29.:23:31.

conditions. He was in Brazil in the first practice at the end of last

:23:32.:23:35.

year when he got one of his first opportunities to drive in Formula

:23:36.:23:38.

One and he was breathtaking even then. Clearly he enjoys driving in

:23:39.:23:43.

these conditions. Toro Rosso regularly send their drivers out

:23:44.:23:46.

when conditions are tricky. Good experience, of course, for Daniel

:23:47.:23:51.

Kvyat. Let's look at that again and see how well he corrected it. It's a

:23:52.:23:56.

very tricky corner. It's adverse and you have to get the front of the car

:23:57.:24:01.

and throw the front in otherwise you understeer when you come through it

:24:02.:24:06.

and he obviously threw the front in and kept the power in. The rear came

:24:07.:24:10.

around. Interestingly there is a clarification last night because

:24:11.:24:13.

yesterday a lot of drivers were driving completely off the circuit

:24:14.:24:18.

there. Charlie Whiting, the race director, said from qualifying

:24:19.:24:21.

onwards anybody that does that will have time taken away from them as

:24:22.:24:24.

they did in Austria when they ran wide at turn eight. That's one to

:24:25.:24:32.

watch. That's his team-mate Jean-skaep Eric Vergne. --

:24:33.:24:42.

Jean-Eric. Copse and the last corner, where you can do it and gain

:24:43.:24:47.

time. Most corners if you run wide you lose time, but not at those two.

:24:48.:24:51.

You can see the extra rain on the camera showing how much wetter it

:24:52.:24:55.

is. Jean-Eric is fastest in this session in the Toro Rosso at the

:24:56.:25:00.

moment. Toro Rosso's only ever Grand Prix victory came in the wet

:25:01.:25:04.

conditions when Sebastian Vettel took that first and only win for the

:25:05.:25:08.

team. I don't think they're going to be in the same position here.

:25:09.:25:12.

Nonetheless, they've been showing well and potential points scorers

:25:13.:25:16.

this weekend. A yellow fromming out there somewhere in sector seven --

:25:17.:25:23.

yellow flag out there. Jean-Eric was 10th fastest yesterday. He is 19

:25:24.:25:29.

seconds off the pace. What about the tyres? Car balance, it's really hard

:25:30.:25:37.

to drive. We saw that on the last corner there, that was clear to see.

:25:38.:25:44.

He had a big oversteer on the - it's turning and reactive, the rear can't

:25:45.:25:47.

keep up and especially around here, because you are trying to accelerate

:25:48.:25:50.

and come through the last and it drops away and it's fish-tailing.

:25:51.:25:54.

You have to squeeze on the throttle so gently or you get a massive

:25:55.:26:00.

build-up and snap oversteer. He is still fastest, that was a better lap

:26:01.:26:05.

for Jean-Eric. He goes up to the arena section. Another question from

:26:06.:26:08.

Paul saying how much slower are the cars lapping Silverstone this year

:26:09.:26:12.

with the hybrid units compared to the V8 era? I can tell you that last

:26:13.:26:16.

year in this third practice session in the dry they were looking at

:26:17.:26:23.

times of one minute 31, we are not dry in this session obviously.

:26:24.:26:27.

Yesterday they were about two seconds, just over two seconds

:26:28.:26:31.

slower, than last year with the V8. I don't think it's necessarily the

:26:32.:26:34.

engine side of things. The top speeds were quick, it was over

:26:35.:26:39.

200mph yesterday. But it's more the lack of downforce and also they've a

:26:40.:26:44.

much harder tyre than last year. Last year at Silverstone is where

:26:45.:26:47.

there was a tremendous amount of tyre failures and since then Pirelli

:26:48.:26:51.

have had to make the tyres significantly more robust and this

:26:52.:26:55.

year they've made the compounds a little bit harder. Whereas with the

:26:56.:26:59.

medium last year I would say it was a bit faster than in 2014. Pirelli

:27:00.:27:04.

announced they're going to be testing an 18-inch tyre when testing

:27:05.:27:07.

takes place here later this week, which is a new introduction and

:27:08.:27:12.

13-inch tyre is used in Formula One at the moment. Big profile tyre. You

:27:13.:27:17.

don't have the low profile tyre that you use in sports car racing, for

:27:18.:27:21.

example. It would be a major shift for Formula One if they went down

:27:22.:27:25.

this route. It's more relevant to what they use in everything else in

:27:26.:27:29.

cars and other forms of motor sport. Therefore, they're being tested next

:27:30.:27:34.

week as a little bit of a sort of toe in the water to see if that's

:27:35.:27:38.

the way they want to go. When Michelin were talking about coming

:27:39.:27:40.

into Formula One they stipulated that only if they went to that size

:27:41.:27:45.

of tyre would they look at it. Magnussen's radio. How is the track,

:27:46.:27:55.

would you like to continue? There is a lot less... Kevin Magnussen has

:27:56.:28:02.

not done a full time lap yet. Has done several installation laps to

:28:03.:28:06.

get a feel. Rosberg comes back to the pits. Same for him, he done two

:28:07.:28:10.

very quick sector times there, Ross ber. We have been fastest --

:28:11.:28:17.

Rosberg. He would have been fastest. Looking after the tyres making sure

:28:18.:28:21.

they don't use too many sets before they wet into qualifying. Some more

:28:22.:28:28.

of your comments coming in, thank you very much for those. Hannah

:28:29.:28:32.

saying, do we think Susie can get a race seat in the coming seasons? She

:28:33.:28:37.

missed out on much opportunity to drive yesterday with the problems

:28:38.:28:42.

she had. She will be out in Germany next time. A race seat is another

:28:43.:28:46.

matter, we will have to wait and find out. Joining us now is team

:28:47.:28:50.

principal of Red Bull racing Christian Horner. Morning, it's a

:28:51.:28:53.

little bit more slippery than yesterday. Absolutely. Just

:28:54.:28:57.

listening to the comments about Susie, she is having a word with her

:28:58.:29:01.

husband really, surely he can influence a bit of a race seat. You

:29:02.:29:07.

are not offering a seat at Red Bull? Unfortunately not, she did a great

:29:08.:29:10.

job yesterday in the small amount of time she had. It would be great to

:29:11.:29:15.

have a woman in Formula One, Toto should definitely make that happen.

:29:16.:29:20.

Another driver is a test driver for Sauber, the Red Bull junior

:29:21.:29:23.

programmes, we see a lot of drivers coming through, are there any female

:29:24.:29:28.

drivers on the books? We had one. She's not on the books any more.

:29:29.:29:31.

Yeah, we are always looking at talent. If you go to the grass roots

:29:32.:29:35.

and look at carting now there is a lot of young girls that are doing a

:29:36.:29:40.

great job there. It's a matter of time before we find a quick one.

:29:41.:29:45.

Let's get to matters of the moment. What's going on this weekend, what

:29:46.:29:49.

about the weather forecast, what's the latest in terms of what we will

:29:50.:29:55.

see for qualifying and for the race? Well, it's a bit more of this for

:29:56.:29:59.

this morning and it's supposed to be getting brighter this afternoon.

:30:00.:30:02.

Could well be one of those really sort of, you know, wet and dry

:30:03.:30:09.

qualifyings, at 1.00pm, so everyone is watching the radar like a hawk.

:30:10.:30:12.

Presumably that suits you, a little change in the air and the

:30:13.:30:16.

opportunity perhaps to put one over Mercedes, because often it's about

:30:17.:30:19.

how operationally you handle a session like that being out on the

:30:20.:30:23.

right tyre at the right time? It's always an opportunity to shine. It's

:30:24.:30:26.

always an opportunity to look stupid, as well. So, I mean it's a

:30:27.:30:32.

level of conditions like -- it's a leveller, conditions like this. From

:30:33.:30:36.

an operational peck perspective you want it to be fully wet or dry. When

:30:37.:30:40.

it's like it is at the moment, you are in the lap of the gods a bit.

:30:41.:30:48.

Yesterday it appeared you were competitive on the harder tyre. On

:30:49.:30:52.

the medium tyre you didn't seem to get the performance you expect it.

:30:53.:30:59.

Did you find a solution? We had a good look. Daniel managed to split

:31:00.:31:02.

the Mercedes yesterday which was an impressive lap time but didn't go

:31:03.:31:06.

quicker on the softer tyre and I think we were out of balance on that

:31:07.:31:10.

softer tyre. Having had a chance to look at the numbers, Sebastien's run

:31:11.:31:19.

was actually competitive. How competitive do you feel you would be

:31:20.:31:24.

in a straight fight with Mercedes? I think we would probably get within

:31:25.:31:30.

three tenths. The gap was a second at the beginning of the year and if

:31:31.:31:34.

we get everything right, we can be within two or three tenths and we

:31:35.:31:40.

are noting ever closer. It looks as though Toro Rosso were fairly strong

:31:41.:31:43.

yesterday, presumably you were keeping an eye on that? They are

:31:44.:31:47.

doing a great job, we are impressed with Kvyat and Jean-Eric is doing a

:31:48.:31:54.

great job. A few reliability issues that they are focused on. But to

:31:55.:32:03.

their place looks encouraging. -- their place looks.

:32:04.:32:09.

On the electoral gremlins behind you? -- are the electrical gremlins?

:32:10.:32:18.

I hope so, you would have to ask Renault people. He has the same

:32:19.:32:22.

mechanics and the same people working on his car over the last 48

:32:23.:32:29.

Grand Prix is but unfortunately things have not gone his way. Thank

:32:30.:32:33.

you for joining us, best of luck with the rest of today.

:32:34.:32:38.

We are riding with Daniel Ricciardo as we head down the straight. We can

:32:39.:32:44.

see what gears he is using, whether he is on the throttle or breaks, how

:32:45.:32:50.

are things looking? He is using a wide line to try to cut back, maybe

:32:51.:32:56.

not idea to use the kerb. So he gets a straight acceleration and equal

:32:57.:32:59.

loading as he accelerates down across the start finish line. Up to

:33:00.:33:06.

Copse, adverse camber, you wait until the understeer sorts itself

:33:07.:33:09.

out and then start to squeeze on the throttle. Now up through Becketts.

:33:10.:33:14.

Normally this first part is flat and you line it up, using more road on

:33:15.:33:19.

the left than normally in the dry conditions. The grip just isn't

:33:20.:33:23.

there and you have got to let the cargo to wear the grip is and

:33:24.:33:28.

accelerates to Hangar Straight. We have seen a lot of cars go into the

:33:29.:33:32.

right-hand side wall by accelerating, but not today. We are

:33:33.:33:38.

seeing a lot more break action. A wide line, staying off the slippery

:33:39.:33:43.

bit. The guide sort of goes to where the grip is. There are certain

:33:44.:33:50.

corners -- the car sort of goes to. There are certain corners where you

:33:51.:33:53.

have to square it off and keep to the apex but there are faster ones

:33:54.:33:57.

where you let it run out and you find the line. Daniel Ricciardo's

:33:58.:34:05.

time, I think it is repetitive for these conditions. It is the fastest

:34:06.:34:17.

one so far -- representative for these conditions. He was struggling

:34:18.:34:23.

with the balance of his car yesterday although the team felt

:34:24.:34:27.

they made a few improvements. That was the on-board view, which looked

:34:28.:34:31.

fairly heroic. Speeds, just building up and not really getting the grip

:34:32.:34:40.

he needs. Ricciardo is fastest, Magnus is third, Maldonado is

:34:41.:34:49.

fourth. -- Magnussen is third. Just ten drivers have established a lap

:34:50.:34:52.

time in this session so far. Just over half an hour to go. On track

:34:53.:34:59.

these Kimi Raikkonen, Alonso is not on track. He is sitting in the pits

:35:00.:35:07.

at this stage. Ferrari wanted to get more of an idea with Raikkonen's

:35:08.:35:12.

car, having found a problem after yesterday. They want to get laps

:35:13.:35:16.

under his belt and make sure things are ready for qualifying. He locks

:35:17.:35:23.

up the right front as he comes into the left-hander and that puts him

:35:24.:35:26.

out of line. Oversteer as he tries to put the power down, old-fashioned

:35:27.:35:33.

oversteer. He is fifth fastest. Let's get back to the pits. I am at

:35:34.:35:39.

the Morrissey garage and problems for you already -- Marussia garage.

:35:40.:35:46.

We have had a bit of a gearbox issue which has made us have to abort the

:35:47.:35:51.

session early. It is a proper failure we have to change the box.

:35:52.:35:56.

It is annoying, we have a five place grid penalty for the race. I was

:35:57.:36:01.

quite quickly last year in the rain. It is frustrating I am missing out

:36:02.:36:05.

on this running. How hard is it to sit in your garage and watch the

:36:06.:36:11.

cars streamed past? It is frustrating but the best thing you

:36:12.:36:15.

can do is take in as much as you can and learn from it, so you are fully

:36:16.:36:20.

prepared for qualifying. It still might be dry for qualifying. We will

:36:21.:36:24.

wait and see and try our best later on. Five place grid penalty not what

:36:25.:36:29.

you wanted, can you challenge this weekend? Can you beat those within

:36:30.:36:40.

touching distance? We have the advantage over the Caterhams, Sauber

:36:41.:36:45.

is a bit out of reach at the moment. But if it stays wet and they don't

:36:46.:36:53.

get things right, we might be there. Right in the background, someone has

:36:54.:36:56.

gone skidding past the grandstand, who is doing doughnuts?

:36:57.:37:07.

He gave the crowd something to cheer about, we might get another look at

:37:08.:37:12.

it. Second fastest, Romain Grosjean, that was the lap when he spun across

:37:13.:37:16.

the line. He gave it a bit too much through the last corner that he

:37:17.:37:20.

hasn't hit anything. A chance to see what he did. Coming through the last

:37:21.:37:27.

part comedy loses it, a bit wide, as soon as he gets onto the rear wheels

:37:28.:37:33.

and the kerb, it spins three quarters. He is lucky that he did

:37:34.:37:39.

not knows into the wall but recovered reasonably well. How hard

:37:40.:37:48.

is it, when you lose control around the corner? What do you have to do

:37:49.:37:53.

to keep control and not lose the entire car? You have to react as

:37:54.:37:59.

fast as you can. Sometimes it is so quick that you can't catch it. Think

:38:00.:38:03.

that was Grosjean, you know it is not going to be a big one but it

:38:04.:38:08.

could be frustrating when you take the nose. You have to time it well

:38:09.:38:11.

and get front end grip to turn it around, and he did that perfectly. A

:38:12.:38:20.

final work for the British fans, give them a bit of a wave. -- final

:38:21.:38:26.

word. They are waving back. Is it lovely to have the British fans

:38:27.:38:30.

supporting you? It is awesome foot of it was like this in free practice

:38:31.:38:36.

one last year. They were there in high spirits, doing the Mexican

:38:37.:38:39.

waves and flying the union Jacks. It is brilliant to be back every year.

:38:40.:38:47.

I think I spotted his brother, Tom Chilton, in the back of the garage.

:38:48.:38:51.

Both brothers racing effectively around the world in their different

:38:52.:38:56.

categories. Sebastian Vettel showing us how slippery it is as he comes

:38:57.:39:00.

down the Wellington Straight, that was out of Aintree and now into

:39:01.:39:06.

Brooklands. He may be using a different line to the conventional

:39:07.:39:10.

line. He stays out wide for a bit longer. He comes back with straight

:39:11.:39:17.

acceleration to try to maximise the straight lengths. He is an wide open

:39:18.:39:23.

throttle. With the snap oversteer, I am sure he is happy that he has got

:39:24.:39:28.

very fast hands to react to it. It was a quick snap. He came off the

:39:29.:39:38.

throttle to get back into line. His team-mate is fastest in this

:39:39.:39:41.

session, I wonder it Sebastian Vettel will be in the ballpark as

:39:42.:39:43.

well. The pressure coming from the other side of the garage this year

:39:44.:39:49.

consistently. He is fractionally up on the split times. As we look

:39:50.:39:54.

through the gloom towards Stowe corner. Coming in wide there. That

:39:55.:40:02.

was the kerb and the green on the other side is Astroturf. When Felipe

:40:03.:40:07.

Massa put two wheels onto that, he turned right into the wall. It is

:40:08.:40:15.

very tricky out of the last section. We saw Grosjean half spin. Vettel

:40:16.:40:26.

goes a tenth quicker than Ricciardo. Very evenly matched as ever. That

:40:27.:40:35.

duel will continue. RADIO: Just exercise caution, the

:40:36.:40:42.

painted green surface is slipping. With Grosjean having found that out,

:40:43.:40:46.

the message is being passed to the other teams. Six cars are out on

:40:47.:40:53.

circuit. That message to Lewis Hamilton, as he comes out of the

:40:54.:40:58.

track and into The Loop. Alonso is coming back. A lot of teams have

:40:59.:41:06.

been doing practice starts. Some of the background work is not the

:41:07.:41:09.

sister making the car go faster but making the race go quicker -- not

:41:10.:41:13.

necessarily making the race go quicker. It is hard for the teams to

:41:14.:41:22.

plan anything with the change in conditions. They can't really change

:41:23.:41:31.

it, once it starts qualifying. There is not much difference between a wet

:41:32.:41:35.

and dry set up in reality. You go with a dry set up unless you have a

:41:36.:41:41.

major problem. I would say 99% of the cars will be the same for wet

:41:42.:41:46.

and dry. It will be the systems, the way the hybrid recuperates energy.

:41:47.:41:52.

You have significantly less lateral grip in the wet compare to the

:41:53.:41:58.

drive. It is more a case of the tuning aspect -- compared to the

:41:59.:42:05.

dry. Lewis Hamilton is quick on the sector times, up half a second on

:42:06.:42:08.

what we have seen so far from Vettel and Ricciardo. He has just gone off,

:42:09.:42:15.

actually. That wasn't in the plan! He was trying to go for the wide

:42:16.:42:19.

line into Stowe but he ran out of space. Nico Rosberg learning from

:42:20.:42:24.

that, I am sure. Tom, you are at Mercedes? I am, looking at Ross

:42:25.:42:30.

Perot, wondering what he was saying their foot appears been out of the

:42:31.:42:36.

car for a while -- looking at Rosberg. They have

:42:37.:42:42.

car for a while -- looking at more padding, probably to help

:42:43.:42:54.

protect him through the lateral G affected on him. He did only 14 laps

:42:55.:43:02.

yesterday afternoon, Lewis Hamilton, to Nico Rosberg's 35. It is a case

:43:03.:43:08.

of trying to catch up as much as possible and that sums up the

:43:09.:43:13.

championship. Rosberg is now walking over to Lewis's side of the garage

:43:14.:43:17.

and looking at the front left wheel, saying nothing to his

:43:18.:43:20.

team-mate, not even looking at his team-mate. Looking at the front left

:43:21.:43:26.

tyre. A raise of the eyebrows to one of the mechanics. And Rosberg is

:43:27.:43:29.

heading back to his car. Trying to learn everything the whole time.

:43:30.:43:36.

Part of that is psychological in terms of not looking at his

:43:37.:43:39.

team-mate, a big part of it is just looking at the left front, it is a

:43:40.:43:43.

right-handed dominated circuit, there are a lot of long

:43:44.:43:47.

right-handers. The left front tyre gets a hard time in the wet. He will

:43:48.:43:54.

be able to see if it has got where, -- wear and tear. Then he will be

:43:55.:44:02.

able to understand if it is the right tyre, a little bit more, and

:44:03.:44:07.

what it might be like in the race or even qualifying. 16 cars have set a

:44:08.:44:13.

time, several have yet to do a flying lap. We are yet to see

:44:14.:44:20.

Bottas, sat patiently in the pits. Massa has not completed a flying

:44:21.:44:24.

lap. We have seen Alonso a couple of times. Rosberg and Hamilton, neither

:44:25.:44:32.

have completed a flying lap. They are at the bottom of the charts,

:44:33.:44:36.

Hamilton having done five laps like that. Now we are getting into the

:44:37.:44:42.

meat of the season, the teams and drivers have only got a limited

:44:43.:44:47.

number of gearboxes and parts of hybrid system, a limited number of

:44:48.:44:52.

internal combustion engines. They don't want to be running for the

:44:53.:44:54.

sake of it, they haven't got capability. With Susie Wolff having

:44:55.:45:00.

an engine failure, because they were stretching the mileage a little bit

:45:01.:45:05.

longer to try to make sure they have mileage in hand, I can see them

:45:06.:45:10.

sitting back and watching as things progress, unless the time is perfect

:45:11.:45:17.

for them to do some running. Just under 20 minutes to go of this

:45:18.:45:28.

session. The cameras seem to have got steamed up, as well. The track

:45:29.:45:37.

is getting more slippery. You can see the rain hitting the camera.

:45:38.:45:40.

Times will be slower than we have seen so far. Gutierrez is on the

:45:41.:45:50.

interimmediate ate. You go for that until there is spray and puddles.

:45:51.:46:05.

The intermediate... Here is the radio. We are missing a lot of time

:46:06.:46:11.

on braking and entry almost everywhere. Definitely later braking

:46:12.:46:17.

everywhere. That's purely confidence of getting the temperature into the

:46:18.:46:21.

brake, into the front tyre to be able to hit the brakes, like into

:46:22.:46:25.

turn three as he was going to that particular corner. You lose a lot of

:46:26.:46:29.

time around here. I am glad to say join us now is Toto Wolff. It's a

:46:30.:46:37.

strange session this morning, a bit flating -- a bit frustrating for

:46:38.:46:41.

Lewis, he is not getting the laps that he missed out on yesterday.

:46:42.:46:45.

It's not perfect with these conditions. But probably does make a

:46:46.:46:52.

lot of sense to run at the moment, you need to save tyres. It's the

:46:53.:46:56.

same for everybody. Obviously Lewis missed out on those crucial laps

:46:57.:47:00.

yesterday. The guys must have sat down with engineers last night and

:47:01.:47:04.

looked through the data that Nico Rosberg was able to give, is Lewis

:47:05.:47:10.

in a reasonable shape going into the weekend based on that knowledge Yes,

:47:11.:47:18.

of course. First of all, I guess he felt confident in the car before and

:47:19.:47:22.

we shared data. So he should be all right. It's Allan here, what do you

:47:23.:47:28.

think your advantage is in comparison to say Red Bull and

:47:29.:47:31.

Ferrari around here, because they look to be closer yesterday than

:47:32.:47:38.

maybe previous races? You can't really judge, Alan. It's early days.

:47:39.:47:44.

Yesterday you don't know what fuel loads cars were running... Sorry to

:47:45.:47:52.

interrupt, Bianchi going through the gravel track. You have your guys not

:47:53.:47:55.

doing many laps and presumably this is one of the reasons because it's

:47:56.:48:00.

easy to get some damage done. Yeah, of course. This can always happen,

:48:01.:48:04.

not a lot of time between session and qualifying. Yeah, this is one of

:48:05.:48:08.

the reasons you are not running a lot. We will look at the replay of

:48:09.:48:12.

what happened. He came in a bit too hot. He hasn't been able to get the

:48:13.:48:16.

car slowed down enough to use the run-off area that Lewis Hamilton did

:48:17.:48:22.

a couple of laps ago. And then slid across the gravel track and tapped

:48:23.:48:26.

into the wall. Locked up the right front. That means he can't turn. Has

:48:27.:48:29.

to go straight. Both of them are locked up. At this moment you are

:48:30.:48:34.

hoping you stop before the tyres and he doesn't. Toto, your thoughts

:48:35.:48:41.

going into qualifying, all your teams tend to get the same weather

:48:42.:48:44.

information. I don't know whether you have your own Mercedes scouts to

:48:45.:48:48.

keep an eye on what's going to happen for later today? Well, it

:48:49.:48:51.

would be good to have scouts around the race track but unfortunately we

:48:52.:48:56.

don't. We have all the same weather radar, that was good the past, of -

:48:57.:49:03.

past couple of races, no scouts around us. Best of luck with

:49:04.:49:11.

qualifying. We have seen a replay of Adrian Sutil. That was a fraction

:49:12.:49:17.

before Bianchi. Got the car turned enough through the gravel and was

:49:18.:49:22.

able to escape in front of hardy fans there with their umbrellas up

:49:23.:49:30.

now. Two cars on circuit. Gutierrez and Ricciardo. At this moment as a

:49:31.:49:41.

driver your stomach is - oh, my goodness, I have made a mistake and

:49:42.:49:45.

there's 15 minutes to go before and leading up to qualifying. He missed

:49:46.:49:51.

out on laps yesterday. They had several technical problems on the

:49:52.:49:53.

car yesterday. He was short of laps anyway. That hasn't really

:49:54.:49:57.

benefitted him at all. He is having a tough weekend so far and indeed

:49:58.:50:00.

the team appear to be having a bit of a nightmare with the problems for

:50:01.:50:05.

Max Chiltern, he hasn't been out either. At least he managed to do a

:50:06.:50:10.

decent number of laps, 28 laps in session two yesterday. They got some

:50:11.:50:15.

decent knowledge out of that. The Marshalls are in place quickly

:50:16.:50:18.

trying to get that car out of the way, but Bianchi not looking pleased

:50:19.:50:23.

with himself. A few cars haven't set a lap time, the likes of Massa,

:50:24.:50:28.

Alonso and Hamilton, but Vettel coming back out on track now. Just

:50:29.:50:33.

seeing Toto, there he is at the Mercedes pit wall. He and Paddy, of

:50:34.:50:39.

course, in charge at that team and keeping an eye on the progress and

:50:40.:50:44.

their lead in the constructors' table. We are on board with

:50:45.:50:48.

Ricciardo. Both the Red Bulls on circuit now. They're not too worried

:50:49.:50:52.

about the tyres getting a few more laps on them. They probably stayed

:50:53.:50:58.

on the same set of intermediates. It's wet enough now they'll be able

:50:59.:51:03.

to cool them, control tech tures so the blocks -- temperatures so the

:51:04.:51:08.

blocks won't get too hot and start moving around which gives grip away.

:51:09.:51:12.

For me, coming through turn one, he looked as if he had a tremendous

:51:13.:51:17.

amount of confidence. It wasn't understeering too much. It wasn't

:51:18.:51:21.

oversteering too much. It looked nicely balanced in these tricky

:51:22.:51:26.

conditions. So the Red Bull with plenty of down force and Adrian knew

:51:27.:51:33.

his tricks of the trade in terms of getting as much down force. Talking

:51:34.:51:41.

of straight line speeds, it's the two McLarens at the top of the speed

:51:42.:51:48.

trap at the moment. Just under the 200mph mark, that's on the Hangar

:51:49.:51:53.

Straight, just before they get on the brakes for Stowe corner. The two

:51:54.:52:01.

McLarens well up. Hulkenberg, and of course, Hamilton, as well. This is

:52:02.:52:08.

Daniel Ricciardo now coming through the yellow flag area. Bianchi's car

:52:09.:52:17.

will be out of shot on the left. Look at the amount of spray the back

:52:18.:52:20.

of the car is kicking up now, different to the early part of the

:52:21.:52:25.

session. He brings the car back in. Vettel is still going, I think,

:52:26.:52:29.

despite the mistake he made. The yellow flags have been withdrawn

:52:30.:52:34.

from that sector. They've Bianchi's car out of the way. Alonso in the

:52:35.:52:38.

bothering to get into his Ferrari. Looks chilled at the moment. A long

:52:39.:52:42.

time since we have seen Alonso qualify on the front row of the

:52:43.:52:46.

grid, let alone a pole position. The wet conditions could help him. There

:52:47.:52:50.

is Kevin Magnussen. He had a good race last time in Austria. I think

:52:51.:52:55.

the team was pleased with him. Scored solid points. Button was just

:52:56.:52:59.

outside the points. A bit more of of a difficult weekend for him. This

:53:00.:53:04.

weekend so far McLaren have been showing more promising pace than

:53:05.:53:07.

perhaps we expected. There was the lady that caused such a stir

:53:08.:53:12.

yesterday, Susie Wolff getting an opportunity to go out in the first

:53:13.:53:15.

practice session, but of course it lasted four laps. One of those was a

:53:16.:53:20.

flying lap. So very disappointing but she will be back out in Germany

:53:21.:53:25.

in a couple of weeks' time. This is what I saw in the background when

:53:26.:53:29.

Ricciardo was coming down the strait. A little bit on to the

:53:30.:53:34.

wetter part, the rear snapped out, he straightened it up as opposed to

:53:35.:53:39.

spinning the car. Across and no harm done. Came straight back to the

:53:40.:53:42.

pits. We have got just over 11 minutes to go in this session.

:53:43.:53:47.

Nobody is sitting in that Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Both cars sitting

:53:48.:53:52.

quietly in the garages. It's a relatively quiet session. Normally

:53:53.:53:55.

we would be getting to the stage of practice where it goes frantic and

:53:56.:53:59.

they're putting in qualifying simulations. Of course, there's not

:54:00.:54:02.

a lot of point doing that because the track conditions are not helping

:54:03.:54:06.

them, they're probably going to be different to what they will be when

:54:07.:54:09.

they go out in qualifying. They might as well sit around and save

:54:10.:54:13.

the equipment at this stage. Yeah, if we look back at yesterday where

:54:14.:54:17.

they did a lot of the race runs, preparation for that, then certainly

:54:18.:54:21.

the two Mercedes were top dogs. Alonso, you mentioned him, not being

:54:22.:54:26.

on the front row, but he was quick again, he was there, third quickest.

:54:27.:54:29.

In the long run he was extremely consistent all the way through. But

:54:30.:54:32.

the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo, that could be the surprise package.

:54:33.:54:36.

That's the one that's got the potential, if it's dry, to be up

:54:37.:54:40.

there and nipping at the heels of the two Mercedes cars. We have seen

:54:41.:54:45.

that a few times. The only time we didn't see that solidly was last

:54:46.:54:51.

time in Austria, they had a disappointing race weekend Red Bull.

:54:52.:54:54.

The track layout perhaps was the least suited to their car. Not sure

:54:55.:54:58.

if they made the right decisions. They went home and had a long hard

:54:59.:55:05.

think about how that went. They probably had their worst race

:55:06.:55:08.

think about how that went. They weekend of the year in terms of

:55:09.:55:14.

performance so far. Kvyat locking again. Wide and on the full wet, as

:55:15.:55:19.

well. That's the one you would normally expect of that little bit

:55:20.:55:24.

more grip at this point. Another view from the onboard camera here.

:55:25.:55:28.

Nearly made it around and ran out of road. Dealt with it pretty well.

:55:29.:55:33.

It's so greasy around here. If you don't have maximum down force, as in

:55:34.:55:38.

a lot of down force, then you just don't generate the tyre temperatures

:55:39.:55:41.

as you would normally do. You just sort of slip and slide around.

:55:42.:55:44.

Remember, last year we had a lot more down force than this year.

:55:45.:55:48.

Therefore, they're already a little bit more on the back foot before

:55:49.:55:51.

they get out on to the track for that. He did race here last year in

:55:52.:56:01.

GP3. Good to see Force India coming out on track. Hulkenberg and Perez

:56:02.:56:06.

have established a lap time. They're almost identical. Actually a bit of

:56:07.:56:10.

a gap. In terms of lap time Hulkenberg was over a second quicker

:56:11.:56:16.

and Perez earlier in this session. With conditions changing it's hard

:56:17.:56:23.

to read. Going out Sergio Perez on the intermediate tyre. It's the one

:56:24.:56:29.

that's more likely to be used. Back with Kvyat. We have a Russian Grand

:56:30.:56:33.

Prix later this year, first time that Formula One will have gone to

:56:34.:56:38.

Russia. Looking forward to that around the Olympics Park at Sochi.

:56:39.:56:43.

That's going to be a new venue, of course, for Formula One and I am

:56:44.:56:47.

sure Kvyat is going to be very much the centre of attention when we get

:56:48.:56:50.

to that Grand Prix. He takes that big wide line through Stowe corner,

:56:51.:56:56.

keeping off the kerb. Does he stay out for another lap? Looks like he

:56:57.:56:59.

is going to finish the lap. Let's see what the lap time is like.

:57:00.:57:04.

It's going to be slower than when we saw Vettel and Ricciardo out at the

:57:05.:57:05.

best of the session. A nice bit of car control through.

:57:06.:57:19.

Nice progressive, smooth. In slow-motion that's going to be

:57:20.:57:22.

fantastic later on. Good lap time. He is two seconds off the best that

:57:23.:57:26.

we have seen when the track conditions were presumably a little

:57:27.:57:29.

better. Yes, presumably. It's difficult in these situations unless

:57:30.:57:33.

everyone is out at the same time to see what is a true lap time. The

:57:34.:57:37.

rain seems to have stopped a little bit. Certainly it's less than what

:57:38.:57:43.

it was earlier on. Bottas on track now. Likes slippery conditions. We

:57:44.:57:47.

saw that last year when he put in a great qualifying performance in

:57:48.:57:49.

Canada which was out of the blue. This year he is much more

:57:50.:57:53.

consistently qualifying well. He had a frnt row start last time in us a

:57:54.:57:57.

-- front row start last time in Austria. This is not the time to

:57:58.:58:01.

throw the car off the road, though. He comes up it towards the Beckets

:58:02.:58:06.

complex now. The Williams, which has been, if anything a little bit light

:58:07.:58:09.

on rear down force throughout the season, could be tricky in these

:58:10.:58:14.

conditions. I think generally around here they probably won't be as

:58:15.:58:21.

competitive, or not going to be, as in Austria and Canada. Expect their

:58:22.:58:24.

performances to be back up to their previous best when you get to

:58:25.:58:29.

Hockenheim. In these conditions it makes it doubly tricky. He is going

:58:30.:58:33.

to complete the lap. Let's get an idea of the lap time. He has gone

:58:34.:58:37.

wide there. Just hold it is in. This is the slippery last corner where we

:58:38.:58:43.

have seen so much action. He is changing up so early. There is

:58:44.:58:46.

a little piece of something in the middle of the circuit there. He is

:58:47.:58:50.

changing up early going up the gears, short shifting so he doesn't

:58:51.:58:58.

have that extreme power. That was a 10th quicker than Kvyat's lap a

:58:59.:59:05.

moment ago. Somebody's lost a wing flap or board, difficult to say what

:59:06.:59:09.

it is. Hopefully that's not going to cause problems. It's just offline.

:59:10.:59:16.

We have the two Force India cars out there at the minute. Let's see

:59:17.:59:25.

Hulkenberg. Now that was a bizarre twitch. There is little - the road

:59:26.:59:32.

flows away and the road's not porous so the water sits on top. Auz you

:59:33.:59:37.

can see it's wetter and -- as you can see it's wetter. It snapped

:59:38.:59:40.

left. I have seen that quite a few times in the wet where people

:59:41.:59:44.

actually end up in the barrier on the left side. That would increase

:59:45.:59:48.

his heart rate a few beats per minute. It was off the Sauber. It

:59:49.:59:55.

lost something. It was off the left side. Looked like the front of the

:59:56.:00:02.

floor area or something. A strange message on the timing screen,

:00:03.:00:12.

whether it's a warning about debris, I am not sure, a strange message

:00:13.:00:17.

from race control. Felipe Massa continuing around. About eight 10ths

:00:18.:00:24.

slower than his team tem-mate on that last tap -- team-mate on that

:00:25.:00:36.

last lap. Rosberg had to settle for third last

:00:37.:00:44.

time. Lewis Hamilton had the pace to be on pole position. His first run

:00:45.:00:48.

in qualifying he ran wide at turn eight, the downhill adverse, that

:00:49.:00:53.

took his time away. If he had just cruised around that corner he would

:00:54.:00:57.

have had pole position. As it was, he made a mistake there and on the

:00:58.:01:06.

next run and that was 9th. Perez having to lock the right front, ran

:01:07.:01:13.

out of road. The way that Silverstone is designed is you have

:01:14.:01:16.

a lot of these tarmac run-off areas before the gravel. In the old days,

:01:17.:01:23.

thinking back to the 1970s, he only needed to run out of road slightly

:01:24.:01:27.

and you were into all sorts of trouble. Here, he was able to get

:01:28.:01:34.

away with it. I wasn't around in the 70s, I don't remember catch fencing!

:01:35.:01:39.

It was gravel traps in my day. Now you have the get out of jail free

:01:40.:01:44.

cards. From a safety point of view, you don't have cars

:01:45.:01:45.

cards. From a safety point of view, over the place. Now the cars are

:01:46.:01:51.

significantly faster in the corners than 25 years ago. Straight line

:01:52.:01:54.

speeds haven't increased too much what the cornering has a significant

:01:55.:01:56.

amount. -- but the cornering has. He is talking about the gear shift,

:01:57.:02:15.

when he is changing up he feels a hit, there is a change in the

:02:16.:02:20.

acceleration, it is not smooth. When you are changing up while the car is

:02:21.:02:24.

laterally loaded, coming out of long corners, it was shifting up when it

:02:25.:02:29.

was loaded. If it has a change in feel, it can create snap oversteer.

:02:30.:02:38.

We have seen some wet races over the years. Lewis Hamilton's victory in

:02:39.:02:43.

2008 was a wet race and he was incredibly impressive. He was chased

:02:44.:02:48.

by Kimi Raikkonen for some of that race. I don't think Lewis Hamilton

:02:49.:02:54.

will worry too much about the rain. Still a couple of seconds slower

:02:55.:02:56.

than some of the others we have seen. Adrian Sutil was slow on his

:02:57.:03:05.

last lap. I think the wettest Grand Prix at Silverstone was 1975. Some

:03:06.:03:11.

seven leaders, a cloudburst on the 56th lap and cars going off

:03:12.:03:16.

everywhere. There was an eight car pile-up at Club Corner and there

:03:17.:03:19.

were only five cars at the finish. We don't want a repeat of that. That

:03:20.:03:26.

was a win for Emerson Fittipaldi. We see the slow motion of Sutil, it was

:03:27.:03:30.

the vertical plane of his barge board that came off.

:03:31.:03:42.

The Saubers doing a few lap, perhaps they think the conditions are going

:03:43.:03:47.

to be similar and they need to get their drivers dialled in more than

:03:48.:03:54.

the others. They also have the situation that they are fighting to

:03:55.:03:57.

get out of the first part of qualifying. So tyre allocation is

:03:58.:04:02.

not a major factor because they will not get into Q3. If they can get

:04:03.:04:07.

into Q2, it will be a bonus. They have had a tough time and I have

:04:08.:04:12.

been under threat from the likes of Marussia on a couple of occasions.

:04:13.:04:19.

Sauber probably have a bit in hand, as Max Chilton told us, but in these

:04:20.:04:23.

conditions you have to look for every bit of margin. Sutil runs very

:04:24.:04:29.

wide out of the last corner. He is promoted up to fifth place. If that

:04:30.:04:33.

had been qualifying, you would have lost the time. All four over the

:04:34.:04:39.

white line which would mean it would be taken away straight away. He

:04:40.:04:43.

wouldn't have been able to keep the fifth position. You push the

:04:44.:04:51.

boundaries in the last part of the free practice, you see what you can

:04:52.:04:55.

get away with in case it is your one lap and you know what you can or

:04:56.:05:00.

cannot do. The green section showing us how slippery it was. He went

:05:01.:05:05.

beyond it to get some traction. He was very wide in the corner, he

:05:06.:05:09.

missed apex completely. I am not sure if that was by design or if he

:05:10.:05:16.

did not turn in early enough. Here is a view of his team-mate,

:05:17.:05:19.

Gutierrez. That is what happens when you get on the kerb. The car just

:05:20.:05:25.

snaps and they were fortunate they didn't have a big snap and turn a

:05:26.:05:29.

hard left into the barrier. David Coulthard raised his eyes sat

:05:30.:05:35.

alongside me. Everybody who has been in that situation, you know you are

:05:36.:05:40.

starting to worry a bit. The chequered flag is out on this

:05:41.:05:44.

session, it has come to an end. Sutil still putting in the laps. He

:05:45.:05:49.

has improved on his first sector. Sauber have probably done more lap

:05:50.:05:54.

than anybody, Toro Rosso as well. Kvyat has done 15 in this session. I

:05:55.:05:58.

wonder if that will give them an opportunity, if the situations are

:05:59.:06:03.

similar in qualifying. For Daniil Kvyat, less experience than most,

:06:04.:06:10.

never driven a Formula One car at Silverstone, useful mileage for him.

:06:11.:06:16.

Let's see this last corner. We'll Sutil changes technique? -- will

:06:17.:06:27.

Sutil? He kept the two wheels on the circuit but it was a wider line, it

:06:28.:06:33.

seems to work more for him. Slightly slower on that lap, half a second

:06:34.:06:38.

slower than his previous lap. He was all four wheels off by about four

:06:39.:06:43.

metres on the previous laps so carried probably ten, it is per hour

:06:44.:06:48.

quicker through the corner. -- ten kilometres per hour through the

corner. Vettel, for the first time, I think, in 2014, he has headed a

:06:56.:07:02.

session. I don't think he has been fastest in any single session. It

:07:03.:07:05.

doesn't mean much because it has been a wet session, a lot of cars

:07:06.:07:10.

haven't even bothered to do a lap including Rosberg and Hamilton, the

:07:11.:07:14.

two favourites. It is nice for Vettel that he has topped the times

:07:15.:07:19.

at last. Better than Ricciardo being quicker than him. But it doesn't

:07:20.:07:24.

really mean anything. A lot of this is just getting a feel for what the

:07:25.:07:29.

circuit is like, what the tyres are like. Something that stood out for

:07:30.:07:33.

me is that the intermediate or the full wet didn't seem to have a lot

:07:34.:07:38.

of grip and the circuit is slippery and greasy and not giving feedback

:07:39.:07:46.

to the drivers. We are still 18 seconds away from a dry weather

:07:47.:07:49.

time, indicating how slippery it was. The Lotus cars of Maldonado and

:07:50.:07:57.

Grosjean did well, bearing in mind they lapped pretty quickly. Not far

:07:58.:08:02.

off the Red Bull pace. Maldonado a bit quicker than Grosjean. Sutil

:08:03.:08:06.

with a lap towards the end but it would have been a lap he would have

:08:07.:08:09.

lost because he was all four wheels over. Kvyat did more lap than

:08:10.:08:12.

anybody else. Bianchi went off in the Marussia,

:08:13.:08:51.

they have got to get the car back, didn't look like there was too much

:08:52.:08:54.

damage. Chilton had a gearbox problem, Alonso did not complete a

:08:55.:08:59.

lap, nor Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton. A shame for the local fans

:09:00.:09:03.

that they didn't get a chance to see more of Lewis Hamilton in action,

:09:04.:09:07.

but they will when it comes to qualifying. Looking back at some of

:09:08.:09:11.

the build-up towards that session, this was before the rain came down.

:09:12.:09:17.

Lewis Hamilton was getting ready and there were plenty of smiles in the

:09:18.:09:21.

Mercedes pit garage. Nico Rosberg thought he would be out more than he

:09:22.:09:26.

was. Jenson Button with his crash helmet, very distinctive, that is

:09:27.:09:30.

what he is using this weekend. Nico Hulkenberg also getting ready. The

:09:31.:09:35.

Red Bulls have ended up on top in this session. Let's get down to the

:09:36.:09:41.

pits and get some reaction from the Williams team. Good old English

:09:42.:09:48.

summer letting us down again. Yeah, really difficult this morning. The

:09:49.:09:54.

amount of rainfall was just about equal to the amount of water that

:09:55.:09:57.

the cars were clearing off the track. Lap times were sitting 117%

:09:58.:10:04.

of the dry time which is right on the point where you switch from a

:10:05.:10:10.

full wet tyre to an intermediate. It was really difficult to be able to

:10:11.:10:13.

learn anything. We did a couple of laps to check tyre pressures and

:10:14.:10:21.

break warming devices -- brake warming devices. Make sure the

:10:22.:10:26.

engine is giving what we want. Probably confuse ourselves a little

:10:27.:10:32.

bit. Continuing the rain and allergy, it was raining bad luck on

:10:33.:10:35.

you yesterday. A big shout to the mechanics had a very busy day. They

:10:36.:10:42.

did, they really performed well. There was a lot of damage on

:10:43.:10:47.

Felipe's cap and to get it out was a real credit. -- Felipe's car. How

:10:48.:10:57.

will the lack of running help you? I guess today, everyone is in the same

:10:58.:11:00.

boat, none of us have learned what we would like to learn on a Saturday

:11:01.:11:05.

morning, it is our final fine tuning for qualifying. Yesterday we lost

:11:06.:11:14.

most of our time in P1 which really doesn't affect us quite so much. It

:11:15.:11:18.

puts us a big back on the development for future races -- a

:11:19.:11:24.

bit back. We did get tyre work done in P2 and that is the important

:11:25.:11:31.

thing. Good luck this afternoon. Allan McNish has hotfooted it from

:11:32.:11:35.

the commentary box. Not the most exciting of sessions but the first

:11:36.:11:39.

time Sebastian Vettel has topped a time sheet. A lot of people in a lot

:11:40.:11:42.

of trouble, Romain Grosjean gave the crowd something to cheer about at

:11:43.:11:47.

least. He came into the last corner, it is very greasy, and adverse

:11:48.:11:51.

camber. As soon as he got one wheel on the kerb and one on the green it

:11:52.:11:55.

snapped sideways. He pulled the clutch and he was already going down

:11:56.:11:59.

the gears as soon as he was heading to the pit wall. No harm in reality

:12:00.:12:04.

but it was very close to tagging the pit wall with the right front of his

:12:05.:12:08.

wing. We are relieved he did not because there is not a lot of time

:12:09.:12:13.

between now and qualifying. You can see that it snapped and at this

:12:14.:12:17.

moment in time he has a ready gone from third to second and then into

:12:18.:12:24.

first. -- already gone. A lot of rain on the camera lens there.

:12:25.:12:32.

Hamilton runs wide, he is able to use his run-off area, comes back

:12:33.:12:35.

onto the circuit and go straight into the pit lane. Not a good day

:12:36.:12:41.

for Marussia, Jules Bianchi getting locked up and hitting the wall, Max

:12:42.:12:47.

Chilton with a gearbox problem. It will probably just be a front wing

:12:48.:12:52.

but they have to take the floor off and make sure the gravel hasn't gone

:12:53.:12:57.

anywhere else. Before qualifying that is the last thing you need.

:12:58.:13:02.

Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets but he also went off a

:13:03.:13:07.

bit. No damage done. On the intermediate tyre, he lost the rear

:13:08.:13:11.

and aborted the corner very early. He decided it was better and safer

:13:12.:13:15.

to go straight across the grass and try to save something and go into

:13:16.:13:20.

the gravel or the tyre wall. -- than try to save something. Any clues

:13:21.:13:27.

about who will be quicker? Not at all. The weather will determine a

:13:28.:13:30.

tremendous amount. The Red Bulls were fast, they will be in the mix,

:13:31.:13:35.

I would expect Mercedes to be fast as well because Rosberg was

:13:36.:13:38.

blindingly quick in his first sector and they will always be quick.

:13:39.:13:41.

Tricky conditions, there will be a lot of mistakes if it is like this

:13:42.:13:46.

in qualifying. Last year Lewis Hamilton was five tenths of a

:13:47.:13:51.

second, as he told me. You have about 45 minutes to do what you

:13:52.:13:57.

want. We are back at 11:55am on BBC Two. We have plenty to entertain you

:13:58.:13:59.

with. Goodbye for now.
